Reviews (page 4 of 8)

Raw, weird, and good. Cool story about the recording too - they didn’t really let the band that recorded with him practice the songs too much, so none of them really knew them that well. Also didn’t know that the lyrics in Passenger Side from Wilco were making a reference to a song from this album.

This guy- no line towing in sight, always doing his own thing and not giving a shit. Very enjoyable

I do have a soft spot for Neil Young, although I imagine his cracked wobbly voice is an acquired taste. Fave track - "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" is a stormer, but also have a lot of love for "Roll Another Number (For The Road)", "Tired Eyes", and "Tonight's The Night"!

Good one

Way better than the other Neil Young Album.

I too love that econoline van

Rock, blues, sofrido e lindo

I do not know what it was but it was alright

Interesting folk/rock sound; was less familiar with his work

Yeah that was a quite good album Neil. I was Neil deep in work while listening to it

I like this a lot, I've never done a deep dive on Neil Young's back catalogue but love the simplicity, piano overlays, classic Neil voice and delivery. Let's see what repeat listens bring.

It's alright

A little boring to be honest

Folksy/country soft rock. It is fine enough, but what makes it so important? Is it that fusion of genres? Sometimes genre fusing leads to something new and fresh, sometimes it leads to something more middle-of-the-road than its components. World on a String takes a classic country motif and makes it a bit heavier. Grabbed my ear. Borrowed Tune is nice, piano and vocals only. Best track - World on a String, Borrowed Tune 3 stars - it's all fine, listenable. But not ground breaking or mind blowing

If this album ended after the first 5 songs I would have gave this album a 1. However it picked up significantly after that. Classic Neil young sound. First half was boring blues. Tired eyes was good.

Fairly run of the mill for a Neil Young album.

Beginning to agree with claims of Neil Young over-representation... Decent record though.

No songs that stand out massively but a good album

With seven albums by a single artist, it was clear that not all of them could be world-class. Neil Young has recorded some great music—but that’s not necessarily the case with this album, *Tonight’s The Night*. Instead, this is a good, but by no means outstanding, blues-rock album. Is it worth listening to? Definitely yes. Does it belong on a list of the 1001 best albums? Definitely not.

This wasn't too bad. Would probably need more of my time.

Like 'Rust Never Sleeps' he top and tails this album with a great track. But the sandwich filling is a mixed bag. The rocky tracks are great. The steel guitar country songs were boring. The quality control is also a bit variable. 'Mellow My Mind' is an awful mess. The harmonica playing is excrutiating and he can't seem to hit a note. Any note - not just the usual top end struggles. Was he drunk? I'd give this a 4 without the skips.

TITN TITN! This is def worse than Harvest unfortunately

Honestly, enough with the Neil. My comments to the 4 prior records stand. Neil is Canadian so he get’s some passes but the music is not that interesting and his vocals, like Dylan’s, try your patience. This record is no different. It doesn’t belong on this list or frankly any list of greatest records. It just doesn’t and you can’t convince me otherwise. So, let’s stop fucking around with this and it get’s a 3 and hopefully this is the last of the Neils, but I somehow doubt it. 3/5

Favorite songs: Borrowed Tune, Roll Another Number (For the Road), Albuquerque, Lookout Joe

I'm sometimes conflicted on how to judge a Neil Young album. This is a very good release which would probably be a career highlight for many, but I've always had a tendency to put it aside, especially because it's in the middle of the greatest album run of his career and it kind of pales in comparison to what comes directly before and after. It definitely does some things to make itself stand out, but it still feels like his other albums of the time, just slightly less impactful. Favourite track: Tonight's the Night

Just ok. I usually really like Neil Young but this did not inspire

I really thought that Neil Young would have been one of those artists I absolutely love, and for some of his stuff that's definitely the case. But his catalogue as a whole so far has been pretty hit or miss for me. This one was alright, I feel like it definitely had a lot of potential, but damn his voice is rough on this album. He's never been an artist whose voice is super amazing or anything, but on here it really drags the whole album down a lot. Shame too, I liked pretty much everything else about it, great songwriting, guitar playing, lyrics, but the vocals really do make it a lot harder to get through than it needs to be.

Bluesia. Melankolista. Nopeaa ja hidasta. Sopii sateiseen, hiljaiseen roadtrip hetkeen.

Alright. Look I don't hate Neil Young but man I just think he's kind of average. My parents love him but I struggle with anything above "ah yeah this is music that is as unoffensive as can be." I guess that's good for an artist? I have 3 of his albums left, and I am only 139 in. I had gotten the first 3 in the first 20. I think I'm just suffering from fatigue.

I had Stephen Stills yesterday, now Neil Young. Just need David Crosby and Graham Nash. This wasn't bad, but I preferred Stills' album yesterday. I'm sure there's better albums by Neil Young out there.

I have conflicting feelings about this album, but I think overall it works for me more than it doesn't. It's speaking to an experience that I really don't share, but the blues-y instrumentation works for me well The vocals can sometimes lean a little too crooning for my tastes, but they fit the songs so I don't hold that against them My favourite song was probably "Albuquerque", it's mellow in a way that I enjoy. I tended to prefer songs of its ilk to the slightly harsher stuff, but not by much

I think some of these songs don't fit his voice. I like the album and the music but I'm not a huge fan of the sing-speaking he does sometimes. I'm biased bc I love Harvest Moon and that style of song. I like the passion in his voice but it just doesn't do it for me

Solid. Neil Young always seems to take me a moment to appreciate. There are a couple of really excellent songs in the middle that got me interested in particular. The heavier guitar stuff is very cool

Oof this is the weakest Neil Young album (so far?) Still somewhat good but expected more 3/5

Lo escuché mientras me levantaba

Neil Young is very hit or miss for me. When he hits, his songs are incredible. When he doesn't, it feels like I'm listening to the musical equivalent of lukewarm oatmeal. Most of this album is really strong. Any song with pedal steel on this album really floats my boat. Overall - it's a strong 70s rock record. THREE STARS

3 out of 5. So far my second favorite album of Neil Young's.

Enjoyed this. Playing was good and the energy was good as well. Like the bluesy, raw guitar tone. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again

Good may revisit

Listened to one song of this on 4/23, but listened to the rest on [[2 - Area/Daily Notes/2026/2026-04-28|2026-04-28]]. Not bad, kinda generic chill 70s rock.

I'm feeling a 3.5/5.

Tonight's the Night 4 Speakin' Out 3.3 World on a String 3.5 Borrowed Tune 3 Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown 3.6 Mellow My Mind 3.2 Roll Another Number (For the Road) 3.2 Albuquerque 3.4 New Mama 3.3 Lookout Joe 3.5 Tired Eyes 3.4 Tonight's the Night - Part II 3.4 Score: 3.4

Vibe 4…Lyrics 2. Is this a bit of dentist blues? Idk, it’s…fine.

It's a rough, messy record about grief, recorded in a drunken haze as a memorial for Danny Whitten and Bruce Berry. It's not the best or easiest Neil Young album, sometimes sounding like bad demos with off key vocals and sloppy arrangements, but there's this raw, authentic sound that's haunting. You either dig the total nihilistic grief and those first take jams as genius, or you think it's a drunken mess that should have stayed buried. Even with the intentional mess, the musicianship shines through. Gotta give major props to Nils Lofgren. His guitar solos, especially on "Speakin' Out", are a lifesaver for Neil's fragile state. Along with Ben Keith's heartbreaking pedal steel, Lofgren grounds the whole funeral party vibe, turning what could've been a disaster into a kind of cult classic.

me gusto 3/5, el de ayer era para 4/5

There are some lovely elements to this album and a few tracks that I really like. The folk rock style is easy to listen to and when he's at his best Neil Young tracks really do hit the spot. However I do feel this album to be slightly diluted with half the record feeling like filler material that I'm sure to forget as soon as I stop listening. I'd give this one a strong 5, low 6.

This album is fine, but I don't see it as sticking out from anything else made during that era in which this would be one of the 1,001. It's fine. Thoroughly average.

no notes really

Just Neil Young

Mellow Neil Young

Neil Young's sort of lo-fi country-flavored rock vibe appeals to me, and I listened to this one twice back to back, but I can't say many songs really jumped out to me. Just a pretty good album.

Pretty sad. Neil Young just laid bare emotionally. His mixed feelings about getting "wasted" are interesting. Songworthy though? I don't know. Neil remains very unconventional among the 70s' singer-songwriters. Intense.

Too country sounding to me, also I HATE harmonicas Stand-outs - Albuquerque

same rating i gave everybody knows this is nowhere, I like this album, but Neil still has better stuff

I mean, it’s Neil Young. He’s a legend for a reason. I like him best when his songs are slow and introspective, but there isn’t a bad song on the album. He’s not my favorite, but I can’t deny his talent.

6.5/10

Unerwartet gut!

Neil Young's "drunken hour" album. A couple of really nice singer-songwriter tunes and some tasty Nils Lofgren slide guitar, but not much to chew on overall.

6 / 10 - Bluesy Country Rock Favs: - Speakin' Out

I like NY but I struggle with his voice over longer periods. This album gets a bit tiresome for me, it just does not have any really great songs on it that said, Neil being average is still pretty good 3.4

I mean it’s alright, Neil Young still doesn’t do much for me

I have always struggled with Neil Young’s voice. It feels very whiny and shaking, so I don’t always enjoy his music. There are a few okay songs here, but it is still a medium album. Best song: Borrowed Time

I listened to this album about 4 times and still struggle to come up with a rating.

Good old classic Neil

Tonight's The Night is a decent, if forgettable album. When it comes to Neil Young, he either does hard rock or country and i prefer the former so it is a bit of a shame in my eyes that this album focuses on the latter. That being said there are some hard guitars on offer and even the general country elements aren't bad and were generally pleasant to listen to. My main issue with this album is just how forgettable it is. None of the songs here really do anything that unique or memorable and just tend to blend in with each other. I also found Neil Young's voice a bit weird in places but it was nothing all that bad. This album is not bad, just not very memorable or exciting. Best Song: Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown Worst Song: World on a String

My rating 3.3. Neil! Again?!?! Fourth album of his that I’ve reviewed. Nothings changed. Still don’t get the draw.

Lacks interest; “Albuquerque” was cool though

I love Neil Young but this is not one of my favorite albums.

honestly enjoyed this

Appreciate his ability as a singer-songwriter but this wasn't my favorite by him. A bit bland by his standards. None of the tracks but were bad, but none stood out in a significant way.

Liked a fair bit on this album, but also there was a lot that I didn't like, finding Young's voice whiny and the music too disjointed at times, but did like a lot on this. Speakin' Out was my fav song of the album and fav first listen with Lookout Joe and Tired Eyes being my other highlights

not cool enough to like this.

This falls into a similar trap I've had before, in that it's so closely aligned with my own music taste that it comes off as a bit generic. Definitely a 3 star, probably close to a 4 star, it's just missing a big hit or two for me.

I dont get him

Bit of a grim listen. There isn’t anything bad here, but the highs of other albums are largely missing too

Borrowed Tune is an outstanding song and the rest is the generic Neil Young we've all been told is some of the best music of all times.

It's an album about drugs, musicians on the road, and death, subjects never discussed in music. Stripped of that, it's a perfectly mediocre Neil Young album

I'm so tired of Neil Young on this list. I just don't really get it. His voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Yea, the songs aren't actually bad. I just don't really like Neil. Is this a bad album? No. It's actually far from it. It's just not for me. And for that, I'll be generous and give it a 3.

Dissonant to the point where it feels so original it might pass off as a classic?

I’ve found a few albums through this process that I can’t bring myself to rate straight away. And 9 times out of 12, I end up listening multiple times and giving them three stars anyway. There’s no real theme - the cure, killing joke, dusty springfield, this one. The closest common denominator is some kind of subconscious nudge that if I was exposed to this album at an earlier stage of life, I would fckn love it.

the album was inspired by the death of crazy horse guitarist danny whitten and roadie bruce berry (both from heroin). the songs are often loose and the playing is sloppy, but man the vibe of the album is just one of a kind.

This has a sad vibe to it which makes sense given the band was gutted after the overdose death of 2 dear friends. Not their best work but the title track carries the album.

A muppets sad lament presented as warts and all demos. Still better than most.

I like Neil Young, but this album is not his best. There are some good songs in here however.

Not his best

I now wonder the phenomena that occurred to skyrocket Bob Dylan and Neil young to fame despite not being able to hold any kind of musical note. I enjoyed the lyricism and funky soul rock vibe Neil gave on this album. Would not listen on my own.

A pretty good album, I liked World On A String and Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown the most.

I much prefer rocks and folk Neil Young to blues and western Neil Young. He's a great artist, but this album didn't pull me in like some of his other more popular records. An interesting listen nonetheless.

Second Neil Young album here on this list for me. Another new listen, not really familiar with this. Neil Young has that weird voice that you hate at first and then stats to grow on you. I would never say it’s good, but it conveys the right kind of emotion a lot of the time. This is all pretty solid. Very bluesy rock. Really liking a lot of it as I listen. A tone of real sadness behind every song. Some steel guitar giving a hint of country on some of it. This is a good listen. The parts I’m really liking make me think may be the version of Neil Young I like the best. Nothing groundbreaking or monumental here but just some good music. Not sure if it’s interesting enough to be a solid 4, but it’s close. Think I’ll settle on a 3.

15/02/2026 A solid 3 stars. Really nothing special but not bad at least. Spotify listeners: 9.9 million

mja it's fine i guess. Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown wel erg leuk. tegen t eind begon t me echt tegen te staan (waarom had tonight's the night een deel 2 nodig exact?)

Only listening to Neil Young because of this app and he's still not my favourite. However, I'm thinking I should give him a chance to delight me. Not quite there yet but perhaps his various albums would appeal to varying degrees. If I end up liking this kind of music..... Well, you could knock me down with a feather if it ever happens. Meantime, I'll give some credit for this being quality enough of it (not my favourite) type.

Nice songwriting and a consistent feel without getting dull.

This one’s a bit too whiney for me.

This sure is an album by Neil Young. It has a harmonica and most of the songs sound pretty much the same, even more than on other albums. Has a pretty good start with Tonight's The Night but falls flat on subsequent entries. Best songs are Borrowed Tunes and Roll Another Number (For The Road). 6/10, the embodiment of Wild West nostalgia.

some great songs but it's not all great

After Harvest, this was next. Roll another...

Great music but I've never been a fan of his vocals.

Not as good as the other Neil Young one.

As a music nerd, it hurts me to say this as I think I should appreciate him more, but I just don't like Neil Young. He's preachy and his voice is incredibly whiny. I just do not like him. But he's a better songwriter than most so I can't say he makes bad records.

Must say this was quite a boring album for being Neil Young. Neil sounded more whiny and nasal than usual as well, which got old by the end of the album. Didn't find stronger songs you expect to find on a Neil Young album either. 'Albuquerque' was the best song of the album, but the rest was not very interesting to me. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this today, not sure. Weak 3.

Decent, laid-back blues album, but I felt it lacked any real standout hits. This is the most Neil Young has sounded like Bob Dylan, apart from “Heart of Gold.” My favourite song was probably “Albuquerque” or “New Mama,” the latter sounding like it could easily fit on a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album. Sidenote: how many state-name songs has Neil Young been part of? Mid 3.

Not as good as the other Neil Young albums on this list. Pretty average. 3/5

Not bad, enjoyable enough, but nothing stood out. I prefer CSNY together.

Apparently gets better on each re-listen. I'm currently on number 2 and it's just okay for now. 6/10

Like every Neil Young album, there's a fair mix of great ballads and generic country rock that doesn't do much for me. This was is just okay.

Very hard not to compare this to Neil Young’s other works (solo and CSNY). It’s a decent record, definitely has some highlights, particularly in the songwriting. But as a whole, this record just does not quite hold up to his other works. If you’re going to listen to Neil Young there are plenty of other records I would put over this.

I rate Neil young, is it his best record/album, probably not, it’s a pretty raw version of him, but to say harvest album was out before this, pretty shocked that isn’t the album chose. He’s very marmite at the same time I can see why people don’t like him. Personally I like the mix of blues and country with the old school American rock he brings. Shame about the album choice. World on a string is probably the best track on here and maybe roll another number.

No he guardado ninguna canción, pero sonaba bastante bien.

This was what I've come to understand to be a pretty standard Neil Young album. If that's underselling it, apologies, but at over 500 albums in, it's inevitable that at times I end up rapidly categorising stuff in my head. In other circumstances, I'd probably give some of these songs several listens. Some lovely songs here, with his trademark harmonies, some of which moved me and some which washed over me a bit. I enjoyed it overall.

Idk is this any different than the 10 other Neil Young albums on this list?

Whole album is giving "Honky Tonk Blues" from Rolling Stones Let it Bleed. This might be a compliment from most, but from me it absolutely is not. I'm not saying the album would be better as an instrumental but.. like, are these the best takes???

I can understand this was popular and seen as an important album on Neil Young’s discography with the loss of friends and band mates to heroin, but it doesn’t make for a very compelling listen nowadays. Lots of misery and sadness, but not a lot going on musically beyond some lovely pedal steel to make sure you know these are sad songs. Nothing that would really make me come back for a 2nd listen.

Many personal stories woven into that unmistakable Neil Young folk rock sound. This maybe feels a little edgier, maybe even some bluesy moments. This album definitely stays in his stylistic lane.

always love neil young. didn’t recognize any songs but it was groovy anyway.

Yet more Neil Young!

This was a fairly shocking disappointment - I love a half-dozen Neil albums and like a lot more; I've always thought my ignorance of this key trilogy in his development was a bit of a cultural blind spot. But I just didn't dig this--meandering and often not that musical to me anyway.

Meh. I like Neil Young but I honestly hadn't listened to this one before and probably wouldn't again. Great musicians though and reading up about it I can better understand its appreciation for the emotional aspect.

Review - On first listen I thought this was pretty terrible, but on repeat listen it was much more tolerable. Not his greatest work - wish I liked it more having read about the production, but this is as high a rating as I can give. Rating - 7/10 Need to hear? NO

Me llamo dexter morgan

Love the guitar and funky vibes

I feel the exact same about this as harvest. The really high highs, and the rest is just solid. Considering how much Neil is on here this probably could have been left off the list

Nice, I'm not a fan of NY, specially is high peetch voice but there are some great ones,

I don’t know if it’s because I’m walking around rural Germany at Christmas time and haven’t been alone in about four or five days, but it’s nice. It is hitting. That being said, I don’t know if I’m the biggest Neil Young fan. I think there’s other things I would be more excited to listen to right now. I will call this decent… decently average.

It's a fine old Neil Young album, but it's just fine

Thought this was pretty okay. There are a lot of neil young songs that I do like, but not so much this album

His lyrics are great and the music is well done but for some reason I am just not a fan. I can totally see why people love his work due to the level of lyrical and vocal creativity but I think it's just not my thing. It might be the sort of western nature of the music that I can't get into.

Not one of my favourite albums to be honest. It can feel quite whiny at times with the way Neil sings. There were a few tracks I enjoyed but nothing really stood out to me overall. It’s very raw, bleak, and emotionally exposed. Production wise it doesn’t sound polished or “finished" at all with an intention. The aim I think is to have a performances that feels loose, fragile, sometimes even sloppy, a very humane production. Musically it sounds that it's rooted from folk, rock and blues, everything feels slowed and hazy. The piano is out of tune, the guitars are ragged, and the rhythms stagger forward. This isn’t an album you put on casually, had to be fully invested to enjoy it. It’s emotionally draining and bleak but can be rewarding if you let it sit with you. No grand songs, no polish, just emotions documented and expressed through music. My favourite songs were Tonight's the Night, Speakin' Out, World On A String, Borrowed Tune, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown, Mellow My Mind, Tired Eyes.

++: Speakin' Out, Mellow My Mind, Lookout Joe, Tonight's the Night – Part II +: Tonight's the Night, Roll Another Number (For the Road), Albuquerque, New Mama +-: World on a String, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown, Tired Eyes -: Borrowed Tune 7,0/10

first listen it's alright, i just don't like Neil's voice, it is aggravating to me

Love the use of harmonica and bust-down stringy guitar. A very authentic country rock album

Somewhere between 3 and 4 on this

I don't know guys I'm starting to feel like tonight might be the night or something

It's not one of his better ones. It's a bit generic and just not very engaging. His singing also seems a bit off. It's genuinely terrible at times. The music itself is accomplished enough. 2.5 rounded up.

Love his voice and the emotion although this isn’t up there with my faves.

some really earth shattering guitar riffs heard but i’m too sad to connect with this right now

He's the best at this but this is not my bag. Enough to earn a 3

Not too shabby but not something I would listen to again...

Not my favorite version of Young, kind of drones in places.

First time listening to Neil Young. Wasn't a fan of CSN and the album I listened to didn't have Young yet....but how much could he really add? So this is my introduction to him.....and it's a concept album. So this album was done a couple of month after two of his really good friends both died from heroin OD's and most of the songs reflect this, or similar sad themes. You can really hear the hurt in his voice on this album as it's very raw and full of pain and emotion, which might come across as poor singing, but tough to sound pure when you're hurting. It's a good album and it sounds/feels like a personal album more than one made for the public (but why publish it?), which is probably why it was so well received. It's refreshing to see an album that's so emotionally raw and powerful.........but it's not one I can really listen to over and over again.

Feels like a standard Young album (guess that's what you get when there are 7 of his albums on a list). Enjoyed it though, but it didnt give anything else.

Low 3, similar to other albums for me where it's solid rock with some country in there but his voice doesn't always work for me.

I think this is one of Neil Youngs weaker albums to be honest - it’s still not bad mind

Not his greatest but very listenable

I’m used to more introspective, dour songs from Neil Young, so it’s interesting to hear him in more of an impish, chipper mood on Tonight’s the Night. The singles are not as iconic as you can get elsewhere but this only underlines how strong his base-level sound is. It’s amazing what a difference playing music with a smile on your face makes.

Not a Young album I know but it seems to be the usual mix of country, folk and rock n' roll tunes. I liked the melancholy of Borrowed Tune and Lookout Joe rocks nicely. Never really understood the mega status of Young but he is a good songwriter and this album was worth a listen.

Tonight`s the Night

This is ok. I'm not super impressed though.

Enjoyed less than Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After the gold rush

Not my sort of music, but definitely up there in quality for the genre to me

Was his voice the not best but something kept it at a 3

He has more enjoyable albums imo (On the Beach being one of them) and better albums from an artistic standpoint (if that can even really be argued for After the Gold Rush would be it). This isn't bad, his vocals are pretty all over the place but I think that's kind of the point, I mean it's really raw and two of his friends had overdosed on heroin not too long previously so I think it at least fits the album. This is something we've lost in modern music, it's all too polished, too perfect, too put together. Nobody makes anything raw and bloody anymore. Kids these days got no heart and no stomach.

This felt more bluesy than folk, I quite liked it - apart from those harmonica parts!

I like rock heavy Neil Young more than country Neil Young, and there’s more of the former than the latter in this

It’s ok

Always heard great things about this album, and it was decent but not as good as I was expecting. Enjoyed Albuquerque. Not as good as On the Beach.

Grim enough but good

Decent, I don't normally care all that much for Neil Young but I enjoyed the bluesyness of this.

Its ok. Just ok.

Neil Young has stronger albums in his catalog. This one’s fine. It's raw and emotional, but it never really rises above fine.

Cover 5 His voice used to be too grating for me. But, I put that side and kinda for used to it. This actually isn't too bad. Still, I don't think I will listen to this again. It's just ok.

Solid work, nothing really special.

I think almost every Neil Young album from this has been 5 stars. This isn’t a bad album at all but it tends to be slightly too mellow for me.

This is fine. Kinda surprised I didn't enjoy it more since it's his album right after on the beach which I love. Lookout Joe was a high light but in general I'm not sure why I'm reaching for this over after the goldrush or on the beach. It's kinda nice to just hang out with this album for 45 minutes and if I listened to it a few more times I think I'd get more attached. But bit of a miss for me from Neil.

Not as engaging as On The Beach, but still interesting

Okay this Neil Young album I like more than the other one I heard (On The Beach). Admittedly disregarding albums where he's otherwise involved, as I forget. There's just a little bit more personally interesting stuff in this album, although overall it's still not really my thing.

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: None This album didn't really impress me as much as Harvest or On The beach, or his work with Crazy Horse (Rust Never Sleeps, Ragged Glory). Could just be Neil Young fatigue at this point. All of the above-mentioned albums are on the List and I've been listening to him a fair amount, because its been quite enjoyable to listen so far. There wasn't anything wrong with the album, it just didn't pop the same way as the others.

There's some highs, but boy are there some lows. I know Neil's someone whose voice is controversial on its own, but he really highlights how rough that voice can get with Mellow My Mind. Other songs like Speakin Out and Borrowed Tune are quite nice though.

Enjoyable listen. Again, comparable to Bob Dylan, but with a better voice and a bit more self-awareness. I thought it was a fine album, but there were no songs that came to get me - they were all just passably fine to listen to.

FAVO: Come on baby lets go downtown, Tired Eyes

If you play your cards right.

Solid Neil solo album. Neil sounds a lot the same to me but this had some gems in it. Top tracks: "World on a String," "Lookout Joe"

--Title track...a little odd. might be my flavor of odd --Speakin' Out...something bluesy. I really like the piano. --World on a String...nice guitar tone but the song is a little basic. some strange vocal choices at the end --Borrowed Tune...this is very nice. Young's voice has limits but I feel like he knows exactly how to use it --Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown...nice groove and I like that it's more of a duet. Gives this solo album a band feel --Mellow My Mind...okay, maybe he didn't know how to use his voice here (heh). It's a nice melody outside of the voice cracking. Probably a joke about the "school boy" lyrics --Roll Another Number (For the Road)...bar music --Albuquerque...I feel like Young's doing a Lou Reed impersonation here --New Mama...here we go. lonely piano, soft harmonies, isolated guitar. this is the stuff --Lookout Joe...solid rocker --Tired Eyes...Neil Young does recitation. Not sure I want that from him but he's trying so good for him --Tonight's the Night - Part II...another basic rocker

If you look pass the poor signing and some repetitiveness, it is not that bad. 6/10

It took me a second listen before acclimating to it. It's so "off" on the first listen-- you notice all the mistakes, off-key singing, things that wouldn't normally be there in a professional recording. But this off-kilter approach lends a certain edge, darkness, intimacy, grief, unsettling feeling. Something's wrong. And this darkness pervades the entire album.

Neil Young is one of those artists who is always solid. He may not be my favorite musician of all time but I'll usually listen to him whenever he comes on. And be happy about it. I'm not so much a CST&Y fan (or any of his other bands, really), but his solo work is all great. This album is no exception. It's kind of a vibe album for me, not something I would want to throw on all the time but one that I would want to play every now and then when I was in a certain mood. I think that's how all his music is. I typically don't like the harmonica, at least this kind of harmonica, so I suppose it loses a little for that. But it's not like fucking Bob Dylan where every available breath is used on harmonica. Anyway, I enjoyed this album a lot, I don't think it's his best but even a second tier album from Neil Young is still pretty good. 3.5/5 but rounding down because it's just not quite good enough for a 4 and that damn harmonica.

My fourth offering from Neil Young on the list. My opinion of him has varied quite a bit. This is on the lower end, though the compositions and instrumentations are undeniably strong. Good country feel, kind of sounds like it was recorded live in some rural saloon. Soft, nice guitar and drumming, very feel-good. I commented this on another Young record, but he can absolutely nail the singer-songwriter blues ideal if he tries to. In tracks like Speakin' Out and Lookout Joe, this is definitely the case. The backing vocalists are also generally strong, though they're far from perfect (mostly because of their mics) Young's vocal is a bit sketchy in general, but it's positively horrific in Mellow My Mind. Holy smokes, that timbre is almost unlistenable. The rest of the track can be played off as an innocent Bob Dylan cover, but the singing is unavoidable croaky, wavery, and very clearly out of tune. I'm not giving him experimentation points, either, because a) it still sounds bad regardless and b) Young isn't an experimental artist. The vocal mixing is also pretty bad here, especially with the backing vocals, which tend to change volume haphazardly as if the singers are leaning away from a microphone. The problem is most noticeable on Roll Another Number, but also shows up on both title tracks. It all feels quite low-budget and unprofessional. And for Neil freaking Young, of all people! Do better, man! 3/5 Key tracks: Speakin' Out, Borrowed Tune, Lookout Joe

Wow, this is bleak. I mean, it’s not a terrible album, but some of the subject matter is rough. I don’t really know what to make of it though. I appreciated that he deployed the harmonica without doing any Bob Dylan esque painful riffing and there was a general rawness that I somewhat appreciated but for the most part I didn’t get much from it. Sort of at a loss at how to review it, a bit confounded, but can recognise it has merit. 3 it is.

This album started strong, though I knew it was only a matter of time before the usual harmonica assault and overly drab, folky-wokey material arrived. He thankfully held back the strained "Mickey Mouse" vocal quality that often soured his other work. It’s truly amazing how only Neil Young can take such a foundation of excellence and sabotage it so effortlessly. I was dreading this, but was genuinely pleasantly surprised by the prominent rock and roll/blues vibe. The backing band is great, which helped me buzz along nicely until the slight dive-bomb at the end. Despite the final moments of excess "floppiness and sheep baaaaaah," it was a decent listen.

Oh wow another Neil Young album! I can see that this is going to become a bit of a trope within this project, but did we seriously need quite so much Neil Young on here? As with all of his albums, this is quite good. The writing and music is very nicely put together and the recording and production is top notch. I find his voice quite annoying... Copy and paste that for the next seven Neil Young albums.

For whatever reason, I'm not as high on Neil's ditch trilogy as everyone else seems to be. I just don't find the songs as consistently strong as his run up through *Harvest*. This is still a good album, it's just not a great one for me. I prefer the more rocking stuff here like "World on a String", "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown", and "Lookout Joe". 3.5 Stars.

An above average Neil Young album. I don't think I'll return to it often, but I enjoyed myself.

Parhaat: Albuquerque, Lookout Joe

Albuquerque was so good 3.5

Bluesy

It was ok

Decent nice sounding but not too much to it

For me this was fine but not amazing. There was one fast song towards the beginning and that started to draw me in, but then it just went back to mellow rock. I like mellow rock, but in this case one song really felt the same as the next and didn't showcase range to me.

Title track was my favorite. Pretty inoffensive album.

Not Old Neil's best work but still pretty good 👌

When I got this, my first thought was "Fuck sake, not another 45 minutes of country rock", but it actually turned out quite enjoyable. Highlights of Borrowed Time, Come on Baby, and New Mama.

I shoulda known we flew too close to the sun with an excellent David Bowie album yesterday. In the context of this list, Young is the Wario to Bowie’s Mario. And specifically, Bowie always has the ability to shine and surprise me, while Young is just kinda one-note. That being said, this is about as inspired and directed as i've heard Neil (or at least the first half of the album is). "Speaking Out" might be veering into blue-eyed soul along with its downtempo rock aesthetics, and it actually sounded pretty good. Good piaano section, good guitar solo, & Neil doesnt ruin it with his singing. "Borrowed Tune" is a pretty soul-bearing cut, with brutal honesty about the state Young was in for moments of this albums creation, his hopes for his future. Solid stuff. Being as how Mr. Young just isnt for me, I definitely grew tired of things towards the end of the album. There are certainly moments where I rolled my eyes at the singing. But hey, that's better than feeling totally irate this time around. A 3/5 for Neil Young is about the biggest praise I can give

Like a talk show in music form. Sounds a little like Bob Dylan at times. It's nice in the background.

Didn’t finish the Album, got bored. I enjoyed the guitar but could not entertain the rest. 6/10

I can never quite determine if I enjoy the rawness of Neil Young's vocals ... Not my favourite stuff to come out of the '70s. Regardless, I really appreciate the emotions and life experience that fuelled these songs. RIP to Mr. Young's buds. Heroin sucks.

Mixed bag with this one. I was hating it until Borrowed Tune. Picked up after that with the odd track I wasn’t fussed on Top Track - Borrowed Tune

This album was a mixed bag for me. Lots of good and lots of mid. While I do admire the rawness and sincerity being put on display here, I just can't let that production slide (sorta). I didn't care for the title track (even though it wasn't really bad per se) and there were lots of songs on here that just didn't do much for me. I like Neil Young but this album in particular just barely missed the mark for me. My level of engagement with this album was unfortunately something I couldn't anticipate. However, considering this is Neil Young I'll say it could've been way worse. Overall, twas' an ok to fine listen, nothing too crazy. Top 3: Borrowed Tune, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown, and Mellow My Mind No bad songs but there was plenty of mid 2.50-3.00/5

Still not super into Neil Young. Pleasant listen regardless. *Heard before

Thanks, Neil

Onhan se hauskaa miten huono laulu kuulostaa tosi hyvältä. Mukavia pikkukaupunkilauluja joissa on hyvä henki, kiinnostaa.

Not my usual listening but not bad. Some good songs in there.

liked songs: Albuquerque I really liked the vibe of this album, it felt very much like I was sitting in a basement listening to it being recorded. I didn't love all the songs, but very much decent overall. 3.5

Neil Young is a talented songwriter, but nothing about this really stands out. There’s a lot of Neil Young on this list, and this one probably could’ve been cut without losing anything. “Albuquerque” ranked: 1. Weird Al Yankovic 2. Neil Young

Probably my least favorite Neil Young album I've come across so far on this list. It's not bad, just very average. The song "Albuquerque" is lowkey brilliant and far and away the best song on the album. It's almost worth adding an entire star onto my rating of the album as a whole, but it doesn't quite push the album from a 3 to a 4. I wish I could give this a 3.5 because it's still a good album with a brilliant song, but it doesn't stand up to most of my other 4 star albums, nor does it stand up to the other Neil Young albums I've heard so far on this list.

I like that he dedicated an album and song to his decesased roadie, I just wish it was better. For me this album is missing both the guitar solos and tender melodies that define the two great sides of Neil Young's music. There was nothing on here to hate, but I'm not sure what there was to love either, if I was a bigger lyrics person maybe I would have liked it more? I wonder why he included the title track twice?

legenda saapuu taas heh hhymähtäää pikkasen hymähtää kun astuu lavalle tietää että maailman kuningas. hetken kuningas kaikki katsoo päin ja hehkuttaa.. umbelienevable. ja mahdottoman ruma lol ehkä rumin mies mitä maan päällä tallustaa!! tämä hyvä opetus.. silti voi olla legenda vaikka käsittämättömän hirviömäinen pelottavuus naamavärkki konsanaan. lisää vaa n neil young albumeja heittäkää heittäkää päälle ei koskaan paina liikaa!! woohoo rock an d roll win never dieeee... 1001 parasta neil young albumia mitä ei voi olla kuuntelematta ennen kuin kuolla kupsahtaa hehheh niin niin se on.. world on a string

Monotonous

Appreciate Neil and much of his music. The sentiment of this release is definitely felt, given that he spells it out quite literally in a couple different places. That said, there was nothing in particular that reached out the speakers and grabbed me here. It's fine.

This is my 3rd Neil Young record in 121 albums. Unlike "After the Gold Rush" and "On the Beach" I found this album interesting and not so repetitive. Young's voice is not my favorite but on this album it is so raw and even cracking at times that it got over the "muppet" quality that made "After the Gold Rush" nearly unlistenable for me. This album also has more variety in song than the other two albums so I am giving this a 3.

Although not a huge Neil fan, I liked the album, soothing songs in there...

Had another 1001 constant Elvis Costello yesterday and hoped I was getting to the end of his contributions. Same goes here for Mr Young who I don’t dislike but a lot of what he does sounds very repetitive to me. So this is staple Neil Young fayre. Not good and not bad but at least it ticks off another one towards getting to the end of this list. 2.5/5 17/7/25

Liked more than i thought i would!

Like it. Favourite track is Borrowed Tune 3/5

i wish i could fulfill my patriotic duty and find the neil young album that makes him the undisputed goat of canadian music

This is a weird album. At first I thought it was awful, but once your ears adjust and you get used to it, it actually becomes sort of pleasant. I wouldn’t ever seek it out, but I wouldn’t be mad if it came on. I could never recommend this album to anyone as I don’t really think it’s very good…but it’s also not that bad. 2.5 stars.

It’s fine but left no real impression on me.

Classic Neil young

Great album

I really think every Neil Young album sounds the same. It’s ok but I don’t get the hype.

Not the greatest NY. 2.5/5

I am a bad Canadian because I kinda can't stand Neil Young's voice... and it gets real ugly on some of these tunes. There are a few exceptions where it works for me, and on this album those were Borrowed Tune, Come on Baby..., and New Mama. But yeah, this was not my fave. 2.5 generously rounded up because I don't want my Canadian passport revoked.

Good Sunday morning listen

Can’t sing very well on this album 2.8

4/5. First time hearing most of this and though I love listening to Neil Young, this album isn’t really a favorite. Some nice lyrics and harmonies here, though.

Had some really great parts, but think it needs to grow on me after a few listens. Loved Alburquerque a lot.

Pretty mediocre Neil album

One of Neil’s albums I don’t revisit to often. Love the title track and the rest of the album has that rough sounds I like. Might grow on me but right now thinks it’s fine. Some of the tracks don’t grab me.

three stars... actually a pretty weak effort from Neil... i'm surprised it's on this list at all.. "Harvest", "After The Gold Rush" and "Comes A Time" are all WAY better... and deservedly on this list...

Compared to "On The Beach", this record have the same impact, and it didn't feel as polished. I felt it didn't stand out as much, although there are some good songs. My favourites were "Mellow My Mind" and "New Mama". While it was an easy listen and it's very on par for Young's work at the time, I wouldn't call it his best work.

Die frühen Jahre von N.J. Die späteren Lieder gefallen mir besser...

I heard someone describe this as no second takes allowed and that seems to track. He sounds like he’s on the verge of tears the whole time and I do f with that.

I was ready to absolutely hate this album and describe it as 'dad music'. I was right about the dad music part, but the album honestly wasnt bad at all. There were multiple great parts, even though it doesn't have my preference

Not my favorite Neil album

It was nice background music for me

Classic folk/southern rock, not a huge fan of his voice

Not my favorite NY album but I love the guy. Always sharing his soul.

Having heard this album as many times as I have, I am always shocked at how shot Neil Young's voice sounds. It's scratchy and like he's straining in so many ways. Interestingly, when he does that then I can hear some of the vocal tics that Kurt Cobain would also have in his voice. Probably not a coincidence. Mellow My Mind is a great example of this. I think this is the first album with Nils Lofgren as Young's permanent guitarist and I always find it remarkable how fully formed Lofgren was at such a young age. Overall, this is a depressing album and it's a result of all the turmoil that was going on with Neil Young and his friends during this time in his life. He had friends dying, etc. This is a difficult album to grade, because there is no way I would recommend this album to someone who hasn't heard any of Young's other music. It's not accessible and does not reflect a good picture of who he is as an artist. Saying that, there are still a lot of good songs on here. Tonight's the Night World on a String Borrowed Tune Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown Roll Another Number Albuquerque Lookout Joe Tired Eyes

Not my favorite Neil Young album, but still pretty good.

Great songs. I cannot state how much I hate Neil Young's voice and I feel like I'm being gaslit by the rest of the world about him being great.

tonights the night- 5 speakin out- 4 or 5 world on a string- 4 borrowed tune- 4 come on baby lets go down town- 5 mellow my mind- i like the harmonica. 5 or 6 roll another number- 5 or 6 albuquerque- 5 new mama- 5 lookout joe- 5 tired eyes- 4 tonights the night prt ii- 4 please stop making me listen to neil young. hes not terrible but theres only so much of him that i can stand

So, this is the first Neil Young that I question it's addition to the list. It's fine, but not super memorable and a bit boring. Maybe it'll take another listen, but it's a 2.5 for me--bumping as maybe I need more time with it.

woah, wild swings between groovy, cool and nice to cheesy and country creep...

I like Neil Young. I think he's a very talented musician and writes some great songs...but was there nobody in the studio that said "hey maybe don't try and hit those high notes" ? Not his best work imo but still a fine album.

Not his best

I wanted to like this more than I actually enjoyed listening to it

Not neil's best.

it is what is it 8 out of 10

I'm not the biggest Neil Young fan, but he still has better music than this. It is fine, but it seems a little lacking. Mid 3.

Haven't heard this album by Neil before. I was pleasantly surprised, I didn't expect to like the album as much as I did 3/5

meh, 3 stars

Neil Young being Neil Young. His voice can be a bit difficult to endure at times, but the music isn’t bad overall. Decent harmonies and instrumentation. Not something I’d willingly seek out though.

I think I respect Neil Young more than I actually like his music, but this album is a good example of why he deserves any music-lover's respect. Keep on rockin in the free world, Neil.

Alright. A few decent tracks on here. My favourite was Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is the song with the least amount of Neil Young singing

The music's ok, but the production is a bit flat. I still don't like his voice.

The whole recording sounded a bit amateurish to me. I really disliked the title track, but most of the rest of it was okay. I am giving it three stars, but on the low end…I won’t bother to listen to it again.

Interesting reinvention of his persona. It might take a number if listens to fully appreciate it.

Neil isn’t my favorite. It was ok.

I just had an earlier Neil young and this current one had me a bit worried to be honest. The first half is very stripped back. And i wasn't down for this direction. It's fine. Not bad but also not what I was looking for either. The second half picks up what I want from a Noel young project. I like the multi track vocals and a little bit more rocking oomph. But I did enjoy my time with this once it got rolling

decent album, probably 3.5. Very bluesy.

Very laid back, cool guitar riffs and very bluesy. Has a live raw energy, even though it's pretty soothing.
