What a delight
Great voice
My French listening is not as good as I’d like it to be, so I listened to Olympia 64 mostly as music rather than trying to focus on the lyrics, which I then read later. I’m almost in awe of how good Chanson is as an art form, and am kicking myself that I’d not got round to Jacques Brel before yesterday. His gift for melody and performance is impeccable, bringing a real sense of drama to the performances, and his voice is just beautiful. The arrangements also have drama when needed, but also a playfulness which certainly makes up for my not catching all of the lyrics. Having read the lyrics, I’m even more in awe. Full of simple yet devastating observations but also wordplay, you can see how some of the wordier songwriters working in English were attracted to Brel’s work. Having got this album at around the same time I discovered how much I liked Charles Aznavour, I’m pretty sure the universe is telling me to work on my French listening, so if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to do that now. Au revoir
Master of rhytmn, this goes so hard. My only complaint is that it makes me want to learn french.
A really good album and I enjoyed listening to some songs in French.
5/5 - Grand
Loved it. A voz e interpretação!!!!
Five stars for the power this recording of Amsterdam has over me alone.
9/10 absolutely beautiful I love quirky french shit
banger after banger, love this guy
Nice. Always loved Amsterdam (and Ne me quitte pas), goosebump stuff, and I quite enjoyed the vibe of all of this. And as the 1001AYMHBYD list is so hilariously shit at acknowledging the existence of the non-English-speaking 95 percent of the world and its music, this is an automatic +1, makes 𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘲 é𝘵𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴. And no, I do not understand what Brel is singing. You don't have to, you know?
Incredible! This is the type of album I hoped to be introduced to through this. I don’t know what he’s saying and I don’t want to. It’s beautiful, exotic, interesting. Loved it. Saved it to my library.
Great chansons sung with much vigor.
😵
Zichzelf kapotgeleefd.
One of the main reasons I want to learn French is Jacques Brel. How he minds each phoneme, the passion for each phrase, and the charisma spilled all over each song testifies to his authenticity. It is contagious and charming. Jacques is one of those big European icons from the twentieth century that were poorly known in America. Victims of the self-absorption happening in the USA during the Cold War. Lucky us that we have ways to dig into the past and get to know those left at the margin. Great album, unmatched artist.
Has to be a five. Brel is a top ten artist for me, love him :)
A correspondent on these pages described Brel as a French Leonard Cohen which is wrong on two accounts - first of all, Brel is Belgian; and, if anything, Cohen is the Canadian Jacques Brel! Brel had an unmatched song writing skill, able to not only write acerbic songs satirising society but also tender, romantic and moving songs about lost loves and lost friends; haunting songs about death and funerals; and, of course, songs about soldiers losing their virginity in a mobile army whore house. In rating this album, I admit that I am swayed by Brel's entire catalogue. Olympia 64 does a good job of capturing a moment in time (and you can hear the crowd go wild for the music) but it is an unsatisfying album as so many tracks were recorded but not cut (restored on later versions) and some of his greatest songs aren't here. A fine artist whose works will endure and continue to inspire future songwriters, just as he inspired Scott Walker and David Bowie.
The divine Monsiuer Brel!
5 for cultural diversity on the list.
Beautiful, don't understand a word, and could only find half the album, but it's beautiful
9/10. I've never heard a French person get so excited.
Jacques Brel- Olympia 64 Jacque Brel is cool. he’s got so much drama and passion in his voice. My favorite song of his is Ne me quitte pa. After listening to Kid A and Amnesiac recently I feel like it had a similar emotional effect as I get from a Radiohead ballad. The last song “Les Toros Avec Final “was awesome. 4?5?
Really dug this! So dramatic. He’s got an awesome voice and the songwriting is really cool.
More of this please!! Perfection!
Tres bien! Je peut entendre cette disque longtemps
very cool
oui oui ah ah ah ah, ah aha ah
Jacques mon copain, mon Belge. Viva belgica 🇧🇪
Very chill, feels like im on a terrace in Paris
(rip les amerloques qui comprennent rien dans l'onglet reviews) Prefs: Amsterdam, Le Dernier Repas, Les Toros, Tango Funèbre, Le Plat Pays, Les Bonbons, Mathilde, Les Bourgeois, Jef, Au Suivant, Madeleine Moins pref: Les Timides
Actually quite enjoyable. Have to say I wasn't looking forward to some French crooner but the style is so different to what you'd get in English that it's refreshing. Probably benefits for being a live album too.
Dont forget it's french
Ziek album
What a story teller :D
First French album listened to. Was very surprised by the showmanship and general music
I like this I no know why But I like it
This made for a nice change today. I don't often listen to this kind of music but I guess I should more. I speak a little French but really just enough to pick out a word or phrase here and there so the meaning is pretty still all lost on me. But sometimes that's ok and I feel like this is an album that you don't have to understand to appreciate. It's hard to categorize - is it showtunes? Crooning? Singer songwriter? Vocal jazz? Maybe a mix of all of that. Although I may not listen to this style often, I really enjoyed this one today and could see it being in a regular rotation when I'm in the mood. 4/5
I know many singers were influenced by Brel and recorded their interpretations of his songs. I especially enjoyed Judy Collin's recording of Marieke. I love his music, but this recording is, unfortunately, so bad that it doesn't represent a very true representation of his talent. Never mind. His fans and the critics must have loved it and that's why it appears here. I'll give it four stars for his musical genius and knock off a star for the less than stellar recording.
A nice surprise!
Can't help but think that at least one of these stars is due to where my Spotify playlist took me afterwards. This is the beauty of listening to these albums every day, as it opens up my mind to other genre of music, that otherwise I might not hear and enjoy Who knew that Chanson (French cabaret) was my thing?! Certainly not me
Big fan of Charles Aznavour - but won’t complain about Jacques. Love it
The ratings of this album got me expecting this to be bland or boring. Turns out that it is a fantastic performance full of charisma and passion. I absolutely loved the enthusiasm and theatricality of the singer. He is so expressive that In my mind I imagine him constantly shaking his hands (or one of them if he had to hold a microphone with the other) to match the strong intonation of his voice and making his performances feel more convincing. The best example of how much energy he has is the opener "Amsterdam", which gets bigger and bigger as it goes, with the instruments and the vocals getting louder, reaching and epic conclusion. Truly spectacular. Besides, power is not only thing he has, as in songs like "Les vieux" and "Le plat pays" he shows a more delicate and tranquil side. When it comes to the instrumentation, even though it gets overshadowed by the voice, it is an orchestra that accompanies really nice. Apart from the already given example of "Amsterdam", where it elevates the energy, the instruments usually play some really cute and tranquil melodies on the more serene tracks. Another point worth talking about is the lyrics. Thanks to internet translators, I found out that he narrates some interesting histories and scenes, adding even more to the theatricality aspect of the record. For example, "Le dernier repas" talks about the great party he would have in in his last meal, and "Les vieux" reflects about the life of the elderly. Overall, I am very impressed with this album and the singer. Not one of my favourites albums at the moment, but maybe time can change this opinion.
Chanson king, bow down.
So dramatic, so good one of the few good things to come out of france, in addition to Gojira 4/5
I didn’t understand a single word of it but I kinda didn’t feel like I needed to. This very compact album basically swept me off my feet purely with its passion and Brel’s charisma. It wasn’t an album that goes straight to my playlist but it definitely was one I was listening with a lot of enjoyment and enthusiasm. I did save Amsterdam though, because it nearly made me shed a tear somehow. And I respect music that can do that to me.
this frog can sing!
Favorite Song: Amsterdam
Very classy sounding album, felt as though I was sat in some atmospheric French cafe
Fancy
French people be like
As a fellow Belgian, this is a nice surprise. His most famous song wasn’t even on here but that just shows just what a versatile artist he was. One of a kind voice and musician. I probably would have given 5 stars if it wasn’t a live album.
Love french
Short and sweet! I love a live album. I did have another french artist yesterday which is funny to me. But this is good, very much my preference of easy listening with a lovely voice. Makes me want to walk around a gas lamp lit city late at night. In general, I will always prefer the ambiance of a live recording.
Listened in the car. Really cool album. Took me back in time; felt like I should have a cigarette in my hand! Good stuff.
Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris was something of a mythical joke with my friends in high school. It was the 90s so we had no real way of just finding and listening to Brel, so it was just some in-joke reference with no context. But if we’d gotten our hands on this then I bet we would’ve annoyed everyone with it constantly.
Labai malonus pasiklausymas.
Loved hearing ridiculously rolled Rs again. Really enjoyed it
Jacques Brel!!
Listening session: april 1st, while commuting to internship Listened to before: no Thoughts: so I learned a new instrument today: the Ondes Martenot (which I thought was a theremin based on sound). This album is a nice change from the other genres on here and I really appreciate the amount of passion that Jacques Brel sings with Favourite tracks: Amsterdam, Les vieux & Le plat pays
Good album from a time when men were men...
Despite not speaking the language or knowing anything about the lyrical content, I quite enjoyed this. Brel sings with such passion and conviction. Amsterdam in particular got me hyped.
I know of Jacques Brel through Scott Walker associations. I love this style of music, and Brel's voice is great too. Classic example of why there needs to be more international representation on this list. Just delightful.
This was a surprise. His vocals are so passionate, and the music is lovely. I want to wander a French street with this playing in my ears.
The passion and emotion came through clearly despite a strong language barrier! Nothing exceptional individually on a first pass, but all very nice and a genre of music I would love to hear more of. Very nice!
You don't need to understand French to appreciate the sweeping musicality of this album. Brel's powerful, passionate voice is accompanied by a backing orchestra in a live setting, and it made me feel like I was actually there listening to the show (it's that big-sounding). The music is so beautiful. Highlights for me included "Amsterdam" and "Le pat pays".
Gets a bit too French at points, but very good and makes me want to listen to more of his stuff and more in this vein.
An unrecognized influence on David Bowie (who covered “Amsterdam” in English.) A uniquely grizzled and charismatic voice in chanson.
Charismatic and French. Cheered up my morning quite nicely.
French Vysotski goes hard.
I came here for the music and I'm staying for the music. However I am also staying for the reviews. Currently, the top review for this album states simply, "What I listen to while my rat cooks me dinner." Thank you user 62c77de5c8f97a728892e47c. Your comment brought great joy to my life and you will never know it. To all the comical geniuses out there providing such brilliant commentary, thank you. I don't always like the music, but I always like the reviews. I have nothing insightful or funny to say about this album. Jacques Brel reminds me of a male Carla Bruni and as such, I enjoyed this album quite a bit.
can't put Jacques down!
Dense and bombastic. Although I feel a bit handicapped from not knowing the words (sorry France) the feeling of these songs came across well. This seems more like a poet/songwriter where the words are a key part of the experience. Nevertheless, I liked his delivery and effort going in to every song, the way he delivered his verses and the way the music swelled and faded. Very dramatic. Very European. Nice Highlights: I don't know any of the titles or words except Amsterdam
No idea what he was singing about, but thoroughly enjoyed it. I wouldn't mind owning a copy.
Nice
Härligt franskt
Very passionate french music. Too bad I cant speak french. 3.8/5
College me getting really into Jacques Brel has aged quite nicely. Amsterdam still an all timer.
Music and lyrics are poetry, and Chanson is a perfect example of this. While there’s not a lot on the album Wikipedia, I got a lot out of being exposed to this artist and exploring his influence and other works. I’d highly encourage others to do the same. Notable details to me were obviously the French language and renown, Belgian origins (like several of my favorite Francophone artists) the artistry of the lyrics in both languages (some lost or changed in translation), and the inspiration provided to and covers done by so many other notable artists (including my fav, David Bowie). My bias is very present here, but this album exemplifies what I love about the 1001 Albums journey.
Beautiful album love his voice
Kind of life-changing. Why am I even listening to other kinds of music
i don't know what the fuck he is saying, but i really enjoyed this. Liked songs: - Amsterdam - Le dernier repas
In a hilarious coincidence, when I first started listening to this album, I was sure Brel was the same performer from the basement club in the old Jimmy Stuart/Kim Novak movie "Bell, Book, and Candle" which is one of my (and my mom's) favorite movies. It actually wasn't Brel, but it was one of his contemporaries, Philippe Clay, who actually opened for Brel at one point. But that association, and the overall mood and Brel's amazing voice, made this a very enjoyable album for me. I also spent a little time reflecting about how to evaluate music sung in a language you can't (or in my care, barely) understand. You can't use the lyrics to inform or augment your connection with the songs, you have to rely just on the singer's voice and the instrumentation (which was pretty sparse here). Fortunately, Brel is a vocal master, and his voice and delivery provides plenty of emotion and interest. - Heard before? No. - Will I listen again? Definitely. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? Yes. And Philippe Clay.
Good 8/10
Spanish - sounds really good. Difficult to get into.
This album is actually beautiful. It's so soft and at the same time pretty interesting at some parts. It's not that I've loved it but I have really appreciated Brel's music and the way he delivers it live. This album sounds really good and with so much taste.
Stunning. I was listening off my phone speakers in a McDonalds with ny head down, eyes closed, hands cupped over the speakers, soaking it in. It commands your attention that way. I was expecting vibrato and ‘technical prowess’ but what I got was so expressive and adventurous. The harmony and accompaniment parts on this were really sensational too. I felt like I was being transported to a different world, where this ancient song form has adapted to the complexity of the modern world. It’s like a sentient robot running through a field
Listening to this had me feeling like a dog when its owners are having a conversation. I understand next to nothing but when I hear one of the few French words I know my ears twitch and my head tilts.
Not being able to understand the lyrics, and chansons are lyric-driven, gives this music a unique feel. It drives your attention away from the lyrics and more towards the sound of the voice and what choices are made in the music. I have been learning French for a while, but can only pick out a few words here and there. Despite being mostly unable to understand, the voice of Jacques Brel is beautiful and very expressive. 4/5
Great way to practice french!
It's great to hear the first interesting live performance in awhile! He seems super charismatic and entertaining. Great to see the origin of a lot of Scott Walkers songs. Some songs got my attention less but Tango Funebre was awesome. 3.5/5 -> 4/5
This is really fine and peaceful "crooner." Yup, it is, he is, French. Not understanding a word really, but that is part of the charm here. It is not quite jazzy and not not jazzy, it is just simple and nice. It is the kind of music one might put on to reduce stress and relax. And who doesn't want that?!
It was okay! Interesting to study the cultural fenomena.
I could listen to Jacques Brel all day. I don’t know his work that well but I love the cabaret style and staccato yet expressive singing. There’s nobody like him. Even so, I doubt this is his best album so 4 stars
Very French. Not sure if all french singers were this dramatic, but boy does this guy take his performance seriously. It's really hard for me to judge the importance and influence of something like this, but I loved getting something different from the british and american albums.
Honestly I didn’t have high hopes going into this one but I actually really enjoyed it. Loved the vocals throughout. I might be nitpicking but what’s probably gonna stop it from getting top marks is it’s a bit too short. I was proper into it and then before it even hit the half hour mark it was done. Top Track - Amaterdam
Love it
Erittäin väkevä laulumusiikkilevy. Brel antaa tunteiden värittää ääntään jopa särkymisen rajalle. 4/5
I wish I knew French and it was solid all around
Sure, why not
I love this one. He has an incredible voice and there is so much emotion in his delivery- you don’t need to understand the language to hear the passion, humor, anger, etc (though I’m sure it would only help). A nice change of pace from a lot of the other albums on this list, I’m a fan 82/100
I'm not best placed to really judge this album as a rather monoglot anglophone, but I enjoyed the atmosphere conveyed by this live album, and what I could discern about the songs from my (very) limited french language skills. Brel obviously wielded great influence on later artists, and was massively popular in his lifetime and beyond.
This guy sure can roll his "r"s. The song Amsterdam has such passion- even though I can't understand French, I can feel the emotion. Very well done!
Excellent!
MORE CHANSON
4/5
Passionate and talented singing, he’s got a quirkiness to his delivery and totally has th audience eating out of his palm. I find the music similar to American music from the period but with that nice French twist. Refreshing an eye opening.
J'ai un tour d'eiffel pantalons!
I played a lot of video games when I was a kid and subscribed to Nintendo Power Magazine, but I never remember seeing anything about a game called Olympia 64. Good soundtrack, though.
Didn’t understand a word but this guy had some serious heart in his voice, I quite enjoyed this.
Jacques Brel is a name I hadn't heard of before. From what I gather, he was a Belgian singer and actor, often considered a master of the chanson, which is a form of lyric-driven French song. Apparently, he had a profound influence on several big-name artists, including David Bowie, Scott Walker and Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy. I was curious what his music was like. I will say for this live compilation of his 1964 performances at the Olympia Hall in Paris, I can hear the genuine bravado in Jacques's charismatic performance amidst the orchestral ensemble. The manner in which he belted and elevated his voice with such poise and eloquence in his dialect is quite impressive. Not to mention the humorous lyrics, which after translating come off as cheeky and mildly crass, certainly made me chuckle. Yet, I'll admit I wasn't particularly blown away from these live performances. It's clear that Jacques was the focal point, as François Rauber's orchestral arrangements don't offer much in the way of intriguing passages or distinct melodies outside of a few exceptions such as "Amsterdam" and "Les jardins du casino". A case could be made that those later artists who were influenced by Brel were able to expand and improve upon what he started as a performer, while offering more memorable compositions. In a way, Jacques Brel was a trailblazer, and this Olympia 64 live compilation serves as a testament to his genius.
Whether or not it is condensed, Jacques Brel always elicited genuine passion from the songs crafted for him and this live performance from the Olympia in 1964 is a perfect example of such brilliance. As designed, this snippet of a full night leaves you wanting more, an imagined moment in time of ravenous, often humorous revelry. Favorites: Amsterdam, Les vieux, Le plat pays, Les timides, Le dernier repas, Les Toros Avec Final.
Different language, but good vibe. I liked the live aspect
listened while crafting a pierrot clown costume :0)
i have thoughts on this but can’t word them rn idk why
Just purely epic and awesome bro literally sounds like he is in the studio while performing live its amazing Fav song: Les jardins du casino
This was pretty cool, he's a super emotive vocalist. I haven't heard much by this guy, but he seems he has a lot of projects more beloved than this one. I'll have to listen to some of his other stuff. 3.5/5
Banger
3.5 for the French Dean Martin.
What a wonderful album. If I would understand it better this probably would've been even better.
Never heard of this genre before. Don't think I'll listen to it again but I kinda liked it
Jacques Brel, _Olympia '64_ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I thought _Good God, more jazz??_ But no, definitely more along the lines of French folk balladeer. What would this sound like if he wasn't speaking incomprehensible gibberish? Well, Leonard Cohen obviously. Man, this is great cigarettes and coffee music. This would be the soundtrack to my life as I cross bridges with _mon petit ami_ on chilly morning walks. Even the opener, Port d'Amsterdam (though to Anglais-speaking ears, words that sound like a pet rodent) conjures images of sailing and coastlines full of mystique and bustling Euro towns and music and art that are simultaneously evolving independent of/ influencing/ being influenced by American folk and bohemian culture. I'm honestly shocked I never heard of the man before. Recommended.
Good 4.1
Very compelling and fun Belgian music (sung in French) - I thoroughly enjoyed!
French tops Portuguese in our non-English count once again! What a thrilling competition. Désolée, I've never heard of this man. However, he'd fit right in to the ancient Eurovisions I'm watching! The sound quality is not great -- what is this, a live album recorded in a can???! -- but it makes me a little emotional anyway (because I love Eurovision! And 'Amsterdam' sounds like Greensleeves, which is a very sad song. OK, turns out it's literally Greensleeves. Well, good.) 'Les Vieux' is surely copying 'Grandfather's Clock' (the saddest Children's Favorites song of all time). Also as a proud Delawarean I appreciate that 'Le Plat Pays' is about liking your stupid, flat country. Highlights: 'Amsterdam', the triple rhyme time line "l'ombre sombre de leur ombre", when he said "À mon de[rnier repas]" I thought he said "Amande" 🥺
7/10
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. It's still in French and I don't know that I'll return to it probably for that reason. But a lot of the emotion really came through anyway which surprised me. Standouts Amsterdam Les Toros Avec Final 4/5
I may not speak French but I can feel the passion in his voice. Beautiful recording.
Not my favourite genre, but undeniably a classic. I prefer the crispness and clarity of his voice in the studio recordings to the raspiness of the live performance, but that's to be expected.
Hard to rate this one… I really enjoy world- and foreign music, and often (across the board) treat the vocal performance instrumentally. For albums with little instrumentation, the vocals would need to pick up the slack both with quality but also lyrically. But with a sparse backing and a foreign language, there is almost an absence of lyrical weight, and solely phonetic and tonal/pitch to be judged. Brel is a fantastic singer and holds his own, I only wish I understood the translation. 3.5/5
cool album. jacques brel has an iconic voice and this is a pretty decent performance of his classic chanson style. the album is tres francais, so if you're not into classic french music, you're probably in for a bad time. i still think it's a nice album, even if you consider it background music. but to me, it's more than background music. it's a classic example of what french music can be.
Didnt understand, did feel
I headd someone here call him a French Leonard Cohen, and I totally hear that, but I also hear a lot more in his voice. It's compelling and I wish I could understand French because I've also heard he has outstanding word play. Eitherway, this album is great and I liked it a bunch. Amsterdam is my favorite.
Interesting for sure
Didn't expect to like it, loved it. 4.5 stars.
I don't normally listen to this sort of thing but I really enjoyed it.
5/28/25. Wish I understood French but enjoyable songs. You can tell a colorful story is being told through his voice in front of nice insturmentation and compositions.
I was living in Louisville. A whole thing happened but it vanished into the ether. Then this guy I knew from school came to me and said my mother sent him and she wanted me to come live with them. Them being my mom, dad, sister nice and nephew and a whole other cast of people from my past life. Steve brought me to this vast farm and when I say vast I mean big. So big that some areas were x9vered in snow while some where desert but mostly it was a wet, chilly wooded area. There were lots of shacks and train cars. Some abandoned same with a relative living there but the whole thing was ran by my mother. My dad was there and he was being his bossy angry self but my mother was in charge. They made money selling weed and implications of other things. Steve being my guide sand sometimes my sister. They morphed throughout. All their accents had changed too. They all talked like Boomhauer but in a human way. It was made clear to me it was very important to my mom that I come live there but I needed $560. I thought that was odd and infuriating plus I didn't have it. So I trekked across this wet cold forested area on dirt trails that were so wet my feet would sink. Sometimes I got lost. Once in the distance I saw a huge convenient store, the kind you only see when your on vacation in the middle of nowhere. I made it to my mom's shack. She was busy running something, things, kind of ignoring me my youngest nephew and dad was with her. Dad was being aggravating. I told her that I didn't have 560$ and the whole thing felt like a trap. I feel like some other lies were involved, like I was hiding something. She sat down in front of me and I started to talk to her but she kept nodding off like she was high on heroin. She was almost seemingly ignoring me finally she noded forward I told her I didn't have the money and she hugged me in the best hug. You could feel the love of mom and it lasted a long time. I looked around and we were on a blue sowing machine and the room itself was blue once but the paint chips were coming off. I just closed my eyes hugging my mom. I could feel how much we had missed each other. When I opened my eyes I was hugging myself on my couch.
I loved the feeling of listening to this. There's a charm in the performance I don't often find.
I enjoyed this listen. My French isn't great but it was nice catching some phrases. Musically, it was very comfortable. I'd like to put it on more in the future and see what else I can get from it.
Nice 👍
Une planche
3.5
Such an interesting pick for 1001 albums before I did but great music. But very niche. Cool to read about how huge he was in Belgium and France though. I’m rating it high because of the fact that I would have never heard it otherwise.
I really like this. my french is rusty but I dig the beauty and theatricality of it
This is the sort of album I crave from this experience. I had no idea what to expect, but damn this knocked my socks off! Brel has such an intense delivery of these songs, and I definitely think my first taste of him being a live album was beneficial; the man oozes a frantic charisma that I’ve never really experienced before. As this was only short, I listened to some of his studio stuff afterwards and it all delivers. I’ve no idea what this guy is saying, but I am 100% in on this.
magnifiqué !
Niiice.
So French, it had to be Belgian. Good fun
scott walker made his whole personality out of this? good enough for me
Honestly I was kind of dreading this, but I really enjoyed it. It was cool, French, and lots of great accordion.
I enjoyed the review that even mentioned Scott Walker 2 as comparison apparently without realising half of it is Brel covers, and wondered why this album is here. Listened to the 8 track album linked to in the app and then went and listened to the full 15 track performance which is also on Spotify. Jacques Brel is the anti-Dylan, even though he's been covered by some giants their versions are nearly always inferior. Only Nina holds a candle really, the Scott Walker ones are all fun but not quite as good (but plenty good enough to have a playlist of them all, particularly Mathilde), and then you've got shite like Seasons in the Sun (Le Moribund is unimaginably superior). I wish I spoke French so I could fully appreciate his visceral performance.
i am too tired and too About To Go To Work for me to rly give this record what its due even over the course of one cursory listen...IE actually look up a translation for the lyrics that are obviously central to the whole performance (and genre). that being said i still kinda loved listening to this LOL like the delivery is just far too vibrant to be ignored,,,not knowing what the words are doesnt stop me from having a variety of actual Reactions thruout that feel like they must be appropriate to the text. mostly humor....some lines are sung like the wittiest punchline in the world and that energy comes thru across language barriers. theres some energetic and moving moments too, and surprising deftness with the orchestrations. a v cool little slab of wax documenting what has to be one of the most memorable performers ive heard work in the medium of music
I liked this. Not sure if I would have liked it more or less if I knew the words. Strong voice.
Enjoyed this more than I expected. Not sure when I'd choose to listen to it again, but I'm going to be generous with my rating.
Oui oui monsieur 4 ⭐️
Cómo me gusta la chanson francaise
great author and performer
Did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did! Ratatouille vibes I’d put this on while cooking to romanticize my life
Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. Could grow on me with further listens. 3.5/4
Great listen. Romantic... I want to say.
Surprisingly really nice to listen to. Very emotional, powerful performances that resonate across language barriers. Perhaps it would be 5 stars if I spoke French and understood the lyrics.
All French, all live, all highlighting Brel's voice and musicality
I am familiar with Brel from having seen Tom Robinson a number of times. He has a version of Les Bourgeois in English that goes down well. And he’s done other Brel tunes as well iirc. Obviously this gets that +1 for not being anglophone, but I’m not entirely sure it’s quite a five. Close - I really enjoyed this - but I don’t know how frequently I’ll listen to this.
I couldn't understand a single word this guy was saying. Was this Spanish or something?? Honestly if it's 2025 and you don't know how to speak English, you shouldn't be making music Ok ok on a serious note, I love the emotion JACQUES sings with. Guy lets it fucking rip. Le Plat Pays was a favorite. Overall a really nice listen. Never would have listened to this otherwise. Redeemed this week after a couple duds in a row. His Wikipedia says he was quite influential on other singers after him, which is some I factor into my scoring when I like an artist's music and I completely ignore if I don't like their music (fuck you Fela Kuti)
Feel like I just smoked a thousand cigarettes.
I had no expectations for this album and it was surprisingly enjoyable.
I dont know what he’s singing about, but I FELT it maan. This was really a breath of fresh air event amongst the 60s albums
pretty nice, unfortunately belgian
4/5
Incredibly French, but not unenjoyable. I liked the song “Les Vieux” the most and was surprised that ultimately i quite liked this album.
Jacques Brel is awesome. His style of Chason singing is energetic he almost sounds like he's hooting and hollering with his whole chest in every song, but he's also good at conveying softer emotions while still being a very distinct singer. If there's one thing I don't enjoy about this recording is simply that its so short and live, it makes the production kinda weird in some songs but beyond that, awesome little album
Very jaunty! I can see the appeal. Reminds me of Edith
In my view, there are some genres of non-English vocal music that can be enjoyed to the full without any comprehension of the lyrics. This album does not fall into that spectrum. I really enjoyed listening to it, but can't help feeling that to appreciate it fully, it's necessary to understand the lyrics. Unfortunately, my French is not up to the job, and, while it seems a little unfair, for that reason I will go four stars rather than five. In reality, though, it's my loss, and I know I would love this album even more if I knew enough French to understand the lyrics.
Surprisingly very good. Amsterdam is a level above the rest of the tracks though. I do know some French so not too much of a language barrier, may not have liked it as much if I couldn't understand any of it.
I liked this more than expected. I can appreciate Brel’s role in French pop, and it was overall a great listen.
Much powerful. Will listen when I have an examination in 24 hours.
Jacques Brel, aka inventor of instant teleportation to Europe.
Nice nice
I really love Jacques Brel's music and this one was a pleasant listen as well. However, I miss some of the uptempo songs that Olympia 61 has. Also doesn't really have the hits I like from him on here and the runtime is very short. Nevertheless a beautiful album. If only my French was adequate enough to listen to the lyrics.
vibe
very much enjoyed this 3.5 stars but will give 4.
I'm very happy that Jacques Brel existed. Sidestepping the rise of blues and rock n roll, he charted a completely different route through into popular music. And as much as I love a bit of blues and noisy guitar, how much richer were the 60s and 70s for having had someone like Jacques to keep alive the theatrical passion of the old cabarets. Because of him, we got artists like Bowie, able to combine the best of all worlds. I knew some cover versions and Brel-style songs given to us by Scott Walker, Bowie and Marc Almond, but had never made time for Brel himself. There's something so enjoyably despairing about French, delivered in a minor key and (often) 3/4 time. Moi, je l' aime.
I wish I knew the language but that was a very enjoyable listen. Something about the pacing of the lyrics was just really outstanding. Unconventional voice that just seems to work for this as well. I see why he was so influential. 4/5
I don't know wtf he was saying, but he MEANT EVERY WORD! This sounded so crazy.
This is beautiful, this is the type of thing i was hoping to get out of this project
Really enjoyable
Good French pop
It's refreshing to listen to a non-English album - French chanson is always lovely, especially Jacques Brel who was a modern chanson singer in the mid 1960s, not more old-fashioned than before his era. It's a short and lovely album, a live album which sounds remarkably fresh, as fresh as a studio album. Great stuff.
It’s very French. I liked it more than I thought though. Dude has an interesting and powerful voice.
C’est formidable
3.8 - I did like the start of this, but then I felt like I really needed to understand the lyrics. Liked the voice though
"I yearn for Amsterdam, where killer robots hide in the canals🎶" I watch approvingly from under my berét, the grey curl of smoke from my Gitanes mingling with the surly waiter's insouciantly smoldering Galuoises, as I signal him over to bring me another Pernôd. The music brings back memories of ma chère douce Aurélie and a single tear trickles down my cheek. But no matter, who can mourn lost love while listening to such dramatic rolling of the r's! I call for another Côintrèaú and nibble on my bagûette and çamembért and larks' tongues. The song ends and the crowd roars its approval. I leap to my feet with the others and throw my petanqúe bôulès in the air. VIVE LA FRANCAIS! VIVE LA MUSIQUE! VIVE L'AMOUR!
7.5/10. I don't know why, but this album may just be the album that matched my expectations the best. I literally got chills because this album sounds EXACTLY like what I thought it would sound, from the vocals, to the instrumentation. Expectations aside, this is a solid album. The music is beautiful. :)
Enjoyed the first couple songs, but kinda lost my attention later on. But cool music to add into the mix and different than I am used to listening to.
Fun theatrical French pop. Not my usual first choice but I liked this a lot.
Good addition to the list.
I did not know that there was a live recording by Jacques Brel but this is a really good recording. I love the energy in his voice here.
This was a cool and unique listen, especially with the top comment on this site providing so much context! I liked listening to it, but I can't really see myself ever revisiting it.
i went from "this album title sounds like a video game console from 1996 that only a dozen people owned" to "damn I wish I knew how to speak french" in the three times I listened to this album. the top review on this site and the Wikipedia page really helped, because without them I understood maybe 10-20% of what was even going on in the lyrics. amsterdam is a great song and easily the standout hit here, but jacqkie b. goes so many interesting places in the rest of these chansons. the first few tracks are like, *stereotypically* french, but he starts to wander into some darker territory toward the end. i wish i were capable of picking up on the subtleties and nuances of his lyrics, but there's still a lot to enjoy here at face value. favorites: Amsterdam, les vieux, tango funebre, les jardins du casino, le dernier repas, les toros avec final
A great series of songs with really unique and interesting instrumentation, and Brel attacks everything with such passion and energy. The recording quality is pretty lacking at times (I mean sure it’s a live album from 1964, I wasn’t expecting it to sound meticulous, but they could have cut some of the constantly-peaking applause) and a slightly longer album may have been able to demonstrate a bit more diversity, but it’s really strong for what it is
I loved everything about this except the langauge. Excellent blues music but I didn't understand a single word
As always, would prefer the recorded versions to a live album. But Jacques Brel is really rather good either way.
I'm completely unfamiliar with Jacques Brel, but I've seen the album cover for this on one of the list websites for this challenge, and I've always wondered what kind of music it was. Now, I shall wonder no more! I thought this album was really great. I don't speak French, so I had to look up English translations of the lyrics, and I thought these songs were really well written. Obviously, some context is going to be missing due to running the lyrics through some janky-ass AI, but I still enjoyed the themes Brel sung about. The one thing that was not lost across a language barrier was Brel's emotion. I was really blown away by how passionately he sings, and how he manages to convey a wide variety of emotions just with the tone of his voice. The musical arrangements were nice, but they weren't really the focal point of this album. I don't know that I'd rush to listen to this again, but I found it enriching to listen to an album from another country in a different language to experience something that I know nothing about. This is the type of album I will be tempted to play for my kids some day, and tell them that I'm making them 'cultured.'
Enjoyable music, even if at times he sang a bit aggressively. Always nice to listen something other than English
Thoroughly enjoyed this album while working, even smoked a bowl to these sweet melodies. 10/10 would recommend
good music to make a brunch with
I understand a little French, but I think I'm pretty out of my depth here. The performance on here is crazy, even if I'm a little uncomfortable in spots (specifically "Les bonbons", but is that by design? No idea). It does occasionally fade into the background, but it's a jaunty listen all the way through. It's always interesting learning about other country's national stars. Favorite tracks: "Amsterdam", "Au suivant"
I’m a sucker for this vintage French stuff. The accordion speaks to my heart. So much energy in this, I just wish I knew what he was saying.
I don’t think I’ve ever come across the name Jacques Brel before. He looks like an absolute chad on this album cover. I get the impression that he could be a serial impregnator. Anyway,I’ve tended to really enjoy older music, and today is no exception. Jacques sings with such passion that I can love his music without needing to understand French. I really enjoyed this today. It reminds me of very early Eurovision.
I don't like live albums, but this one is actually pretty good. It's not my style of music, but the power that Jacques delivers is impressive. A very emotive singer, that's for sure.
I'm somehow used to French music and this was totally unexpected. Very strong presentation, and "Amsterdam" really touched me deeply. Exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for on the 1001 list. Happily surprised
Whoa. Ok hold up. The passion with which this man sings is absolutely unmatched. What it must’ve been like to see him in person my goodness. You can hear his energy and passion in just the music. You can feel it. This man believes with every fiber of his being what he’s singing on this album. The audience at this show must’ve gotten a hell of a show holy shit. Regardless of your opinion of the music we can at least acknowledge what must’ve been this man’s incredible showman. Ok. Just needed to get that out of the way. This was such an interesting listen. I had no idea what he was saying for about 99% of the songs. But it didn’t matter. The music itself conveyed the tone and emotion of each song just fine. Also let’s acknowledge that this man was up there singing these songs by himself. No backup singers. Just a band (an immaculate band, mind you) and him. I got the feeling that this music was very French. Like this is what the people of France were listening to obsessively during its time. Like these songs, at times, sound stereotypically French. But I don’t care. This was a fun listen and I can’t say enough about the performance. Standout tracks: Amsterdam, Tango Funebre, Les Jardins du Casino, Les Toros Avec Final
Sehr dramatischer Brel. J'aime.
This was a fun half hour. Brel’s singing was smooth as butter. I have no idea what he was saying but it didn’t matter. The album exudes charm and sophistication - probably because it’s all in French.
Pleasant. I notice I get more drawn to 'pleasant' the past month or so. So tis was an album perfectly generated.
Surprisingly easy to listen to. The vocals were great with the melodies
This was fun. Would probably be more fun to watch. He sounded like he was a good watch.
8/10, banger
4/5. Pretty passionate singing and powerful vocals. Soothing at times as well. I do not understand the language but I do believe it can surpass the understanding and strive on feeling only. I like how the instruments put themselves in the background for most of the songs, allowing the vocals to shine. Also, the happy go lucky songs still contain so much passion that it feels like these lyrics mean so much to the singer. Much better than I was expecting. Best Song: Amsterdam, Tango funebre
cute. relaxing kinda. i liked many of the songs. Le Plat Pays one of them. listen to it again
I knew absolutely nothing about this artist or album going in and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. It's very theatrical but in an intimate and personal way rather than a grand, showtune-y kind of way. You can definitely hear the influence this had on singers such as Leonard Cohen which makes me see why Jacques Brel's would be included on this list. The instrumental work is also quite nice considering this performance is heavily focused on vocals. It's clear, punchy, and supports the singing perfectly.
Probably good songwriting, but France so I don’t know. Still good though.
Couldn’t understand a word, but loved the sound and passion he sings with.
I liked this album a lot. Very unique and theatrical singing style. I speak French so I am able to understand a lot of the lyrics which added to m appreciation. But even without that I found the melodies and the arrangements for the songs very agreeable. I'm going to give it 4 stars
Couldn't understand it but loved his passion
Dude was good. Fun passionate songs
Zaskakująco dobre. Miejscami brzmiał podobnie do Kaczmarskiego. Solidne 4/5.
Amsterdam was my favorite track!
Very French, it's definitely a vibe but I personally like the vibe. Someone else said he's like a French Leonard Cohen and I agree, very story driven music but fun and enjoyable to listen to even with my very very limited French. Favorite song Le Plat Plays (mostly because I understand the most of that one)
First "French Crooner" (I guess "chanson" is the proper term) album I've come across. I can imagine this as musical theater. The klezmer and big band sound is good fun. I can see why folks went a little crazy for him. Thumbs up. Unexpected banger: Les Timides
Imagine how much cigarette smoke was in that room. With that said, cool live album with great energy! I’m afraid I’m missing some of the cultural significance not being a Francophone, but it’s still good taken out of context and listened to as is.
Great orchestra, well sung but don't care for the vocal style
Fun cabaret album by a powerful performer - I don’t speak French but I can get the context - so I know I’m losing out - yet it’s still a good listen I’d like to revisit.
Father John Misty think he Scott Walker. Scott Walker think he Jacques Brel. Jacques Brel think he the Hamburglar.
Certainly a committed and convincing singer. One only wishes one knew what he was singing.
At first I didn't even want to listen to the album, because it felt like from the album cover it's just gonna be another swingy, jazzy, sinatraesque old record which I wasn't really in the mood for at the moment. But I'm really glad I did listen. They are great french chansonos with so much artistry and energy packed into them. Amsterdam, for example, is just amazing in how much of a sense of fierceness, life, but at the same time composure it conveys. With this record you often don't need to even understand the language for its strong emotion to get conveyed either way. Really liked it 8/10
28 minutes, half of them applause. Seems fitting for a guy whose impact on European music (and soundtracks!) can hardly be overstated. A nice little taste of how French the 60s could sound like.
In 2019 I visited the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Every morning I went for a shower in the marina and every morning in the stall next to mine a French gentleman loudly sang what I only now realize was a rendition of “Amsterdam”. What a dramatic way to start the day.
An interesting and engaging, almost conversational feeling classical performance
Seasons in the sun líka eftir hann. Frábær plata, þ.e. lengri útgáfan ekki þessi stutta sem forritið vísar inn á. Fullkomin tónlist við vinnuna.
Well this was a real treat. I think this might be the only chanson artist I have ever properly listened to. I know about 5 total French words, so the language barrier is obviously strong in something as wordy and passionate as chanson, but I mean… just listen to this guy sing. “Amsderdam” needs no subtitles, his passion, anger, intensity is brimming. And listen to that band! Reminds me a little of Bernstein’s Candide score, that’s my only touchstone to this, I have none other, I’m so uncultured! I thought this was so passionate and surprisingly feel a bit in love with it. And I love that it’s so live. Good moment in time, captured on a record. A post-listen-high, maybe too generous, 4/5. It did enough to convince me that I should be simply ignoring chanson just because I don’t speak French.
This is a really solid album. I had never really heard of Jacques Brel before and was excited to hear something new. I find the chanson style of song really interesting and I can definitely see how it was an influence on other artists like Scott Walker. I have no idea what he's singing about in these songs but the music and his vocals are great. I don't think it will be a regular in my rotation, which is keeping it from a 5/5 but it's a strong album and a cool artist. Standout Tracks: Amsterdam, Le Dernier Repas, Les Vieux, Les Bonbons, Mathilde, Les Bigotes, Les Bourgeois, Madeleine
The Jimi Hendrix of the chanson
Highlights - Les jardins du casino
first listen really lovely
Best Song: Amsterdam. I love a song where the singer has so much energy they're almost shouting, and it feels like he's musically shouting here. Worst Song: Le tango funèbre. It felt like some of his energy was wasted in this tango, which never matched him for intensity. Overall: Goddamn if he doesn't sing with conviction. I like the passion with which he sings, even if sometimes the arrangements show their age in their theatricality.
I know no French but I somehow understood the meaning. Lot of passion behind this live album. Loved it!
Chanson francesa.
Heel typische 'verhalende' zangstijl. Een Belg om trots over te zijn
And Dimery pleasantly surprises. This is a fine album, from the legend Brel, and from a country that influences anglophone pop in weird yet important ways. This is probably close enough to must listen to justify its presence, though Brel's studio stuff is better, I think. 3.5 rounded up.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Amsterdam, Les jardins du casino
Ah Jacques Brel. My familiarity with him begins and ends with Amsterdam, and only because Bowie did a (Superior, I think, although it's close) cover. This album is fun and zippy and what's not to love about a French crooner?
French pop from the 60s. Wild and very welcome. This was a very enjoyable listen on a lazy early Sunday morning.
Brel yeah
Not bad! Its a fun, old French album recorded live and keeps my interest throughout. 4/5
Stórfenglegir tónleikar! Amsterdam er rosalegt! Hlustaði á lengri útgáfu plötunnar á https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_md8CgECWzLA6WbE8tQIjKQzfXXeyEw19M&si=3_SKV3sdxKGsEKLK
4/5
Kova
didn't understand 99% of it, loved it
BEST SONGS: -Le plat pays -Les jardins du casino
Pretty fun, pretty French. 7/10
Exactly what you want from a French pop crooner.
it's nice?
I'm up for some french accordian music this morning. This is very forceful, french is being sung in such a muscular way. It's both refreshing and surprising. Tango Funèbre is a standout track.
If one record was to ever sum up how I feel about the decay of the modern world, it's this. An assured display of charisma and charm that makes me want to fuck a dolphin dry. I can't help but feel like a new born baby shitting in my nappy. Well done.
Despite having no idea what he was saying, I really liked this album. You can feel his emotion and I could just picture being there watching this performance.
Way better than I was expecting.

My favourite singer is Scott Walker and my favourite band is The Divine Comedy so Jacques Brel is patient zero for all the music I love. my French isn’t up to following the lyrics but what is undeniable is that these are extraordinary songs performed with fantastic intensity
If you're looking for melodramatic ditties belted out in French, there is no better option. Such a great voice and incredible theatrical delivery! Knew a few of these from much inferior cover versions in English. Excellent in small doses, great recommendation. Like a number of Gallic cultural high points he was, of course, actually Belgian.
I was genuinely quite impressed by what is, unfortunately, a live album. He sings well. It is recorded as well as a live performance could be.
4.25
Ok
Nice feeling, but must admit: completely new to me!
I really liked the vibe, I wish I knew what he was saying, but I really enjoyed this!
silly french man got me jiving
Fancy!
Pretty good, like something out of a movie
