Genius performer! Not the best collection of songs Imo...

Who the hell thinks this is a rock album? Robert Dimery? The same person who calls the Specials debut a reggae album? (that's probably more overtly reprehensible) Just stick with pop, or chanson if you want to be really accurate, but this is French pop, definitely not rock. I wish I knew French, I'm sure Google translate would not do the job here. I liked this, I bet it's clever and powerful.

A great vocal talent

hij mag me altijd brellen

frnech slay what can i say. this is female empowerment

Baguette

This is certainly not the kind of thing I'd usually listen to, but I found myself quite enjoying this! I honestly wish I had a better understanding of French, but the lyrical prowess of Brel is very evident even without really understanding the lyrics. If anything it's a motivation for me to learn the language, because Chanson seems quite interesting! Favourite: "Les Toros"

I really don’t know how to rate this album. I had no idea what he was saying, and I know nothing about the genre to compare it to. So it gets two stars for the amazing voice and two stars for making me feel like I was on vacation while listening.

Well well. I want expecting much but I found this enjoyable. So I did some research which led to Bowie singing Amsterdam (good, but not at Brel's level) and live clips of Brel. So much emotion. And sweat.

Nice flowing, autumny vibes. I'm not the biggest fan of chanson, but this is quite good. Best track is Amsterdam. 3.5/5

4.0 - Recordings of live performances work best when they convey the electricity of the moment, and in that regard this record succeeds marvelously. Brel's voice is a triumph - you can hear his lungs, throat, mouth and tongue flexing to project and articulate every line with the muscular proficiency of a bodybuilder. The audience's ovations are deafening, most notably after the first and most striking track "Amsterdam."

From what I gather Mr. Brel was quite the lyricist, but since I don't speak any French I cannot confirm or deny. I do know that he had a very nice singing voice and that transcends language. This was a rather pleasurable listen with no fat to be found. Good music that doesn't over stay its welcome. I'll take it.

Reminds of a French Leonard Cohen. Thanks to French class, I was able to follow along pretty decently. There's a lot of passion, pain, art, and angst in this album - not sure what it is about Western Europeans, but they seem to delve right into the feelings of things & let it flow out of them like poetry. I've just added this to my Edith Piaf playlist. P.S. While listening on YouTube, I found a 1001 Albums Journey YT channel

Great crooner. I enjoyed listening to this very much.

Zut alors.

Great Jacques Brel live album of course, these chansons are obviously all of 5-star quality, and their live versions are often better than the studio ones.. But not sure if live albums should be included in this list, even though some are quite legendary and some of them have several tracks that do not appear on any studio album. Tough choice, as Olympia 64 satisfies both criteria.. so 4 stars then in the end.

My album #301, and it's a lovely one. Several of Brel's chansons are of course classics. His performance is compelling, the band does a good job too. I don't understand most of the French lyrics but the language sounds nice. (Brel also recorded some of his songs in Dutch but I prefer the French. Noteworthy by the way is a recording of Brel's work in Frisian by Douwe Heeringa in a 'lighter' style.) I listened to Enregistrement Public à l'Olympia 1964, containing 15 songs. Personal highlight is Le Plat Pays, while Amsterdam and Les Bourgeois stand out as well. One can argue about live albums in the list. Let's say that in this case the live aspect doesn't add much compared to studio versions.

I never heard this one before but it was rather disappointing

I don’t know what I was expecting here, but I kind of loved it? My experience with French music is pretty damn limited- mainly just the Neigeverse and Charlotte Gainsbourg- but this is right up my alley. It’s basically a Parisian Sinatra backed by Duke Ellington, which yes please. Will come back to. B

Not my taste, but this guy is talented.

Enjoyable. I've heard of Jacques Brel but never really listened to him before. I was well aware of his influence and now have a better understanding of why he is praised. Performance wise, I don't need to understand French to get the story telling involved in his songs.

Doesn't really sound like a live album until the audience claps at the end of each track - great mixing! Very fun French music of the era. Not my thing, but can't argue it's not great. Probably would've gotten more sick of it if it was longer than 30minutes hahah.

This is great! Love it!

Chanson francesa.

Easy listening if you want. Passionate, exciting, inspired performances.

Goed begin, zeikerig eind

It's a strange decision to include a live album of Jacques Brel on this list. I would rather put "Jacques Brel 5" on it as his best studio album. That one does not contain that many famous songs, but this live album also has only two ("Amsterdam" and "Mathilde").

It's Jacques Brel, what's not to like?

Didn't look up the lyrics, just feelin the vibes

Wow this takes me back to sitting in the back of my parent's car and being really grumpy at the flipping French Chansons being on again, with my dad singing along loudly to drown out my screams to PLEASE TURN IT OFF. 10/10 would listen to again.

No fucking clue what he's singing about, which is a good thing as I didn't get distracted by the lyrics. Technically impressive for a live album too.

Quite a nice, fun album, but slightly disappointing. After the first song Amsterdam, I was hoping most of the songs would share this same energy, but many ended up being piano ballads instead. I still enjoyed these songs, but they didn't quite have the same punch of Amsterdam. Overall, it's definitely worth a listen, though. 7/10

I really liked the vocals and overall atmosphere this album creates. It’s very impressive

Not bad

A live French singer-songwriter album. Interesting. Jacques Brel has a wonderful, passionate voice, and it’s fairly short, thankfully. I do not understand anything he is saying, but that is fine, because his fantastic voice travels through the language barrier, especially on the dramatic, incredible opener “Amsterdam.” Following that, it sinks to a spot just above mediocrity, which it hovers at for the albums’s remaining time. There are no highlights other than that song. It’s pretty good though, and that song is fucking insane. 7.2/10

Very powerful voice, though I miss a lot in translation with music this lyrical. Highlights: "Amsterdam", "Les Toros Avec Final"

Rate: 7/10.

Hmm. Hurmmmmmm. Yeah, I kind of have absolutely no idea as to what this album could be. Jacques is a French name if I'm not mistaken, so that alleviates a bit of the mystique. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea as to what the Frenchies were doing in the 60s. The dress code and artwork of this album invokes the image of an 80s new wave/punk band, so I'm double fucked there. My one and only guess as to what the genre of this album could be is pop rock, so I'll hedge my bets on that. Here goes. This album is a "chanson" release, which is a wonderfully nonspecific genre of French music that has more to do with vocal melodies over established styles of music. I'll take that as a victory on the prediction front. I should have known that this would be a live album, though I'm surprised nonetheless. For full disclosure, I listened to the 28-minute track list that appears on the original release of this album over the expanded 48-minute runtime that appears on its reissues. I find that necessary to disclose as the 1001 Albums book includes the expanded track list over the original. Anyways, the album. It's solid! I can appreciate the operatic style. Jacques is a very skilled performer - you can hear the passion coming through in his vocal delivery. It also helps that the songwriting is deliberate, purposeful and appealing in how distinctly French it is. The pianos are the obvious highlight as far as the instrumentals are concerned, being the central focus on many of the songs. The plucky, lightweight feel is well-matched with Jacques' frolicking vocal style and sounds pleasing on its own. Other instruments like the triangle, brass instruments and incredibly French accordion elevate the opulent feel of the music. Overall, this album was quite solid! I think I should I have gone the full 48 minutes as I was left wanting a little more by the end. Still, as far as the version I listened to is concerned, this album is varied, concise and satisfying with the note that it ends on, which are all things that I greatly value in an album. Book time. This album was performed in Olympia Hall, which is apparently one of the big league concert halls in Europe. Released when chanson was beginning to build an audience in The UK and US. Most of the setlist is from "Les Bonbons", which was his most recent album at the time of release. These live performances have a dramatic flair that isn't present in their studio counterparts. Wikipedia has fuck all on this album, though it was the last live album Jacques Brel released in his lifetime. Chanson isn't a widely influential genre of music, though it is distinctive and I have heard its influence at points, so I'm content with letting this one through. I cosign this inclusion.

This is so French and old. Delightful.

That was good for whatever it was.

even though i didnt understand a single word, he sang with heart and passion. i can see why he was HUGE. i am sure i will not listen to it again.

He had a super amazing voice and it was very enjoyable to listen to. But it was hard to compare it to anything else I ever listened to!

Clearly a good album, but just didn't do anything for me. Interesting though.

I really only know the album "Jacques Brel Is Alive and well in Paris". Looking forward to this one. I recognize a lot of these songs even though they're in French. The sometimes bawdy English versions make me laugh out loud, these still bring a smile to my face.

rotte med tull i

pretty alright live album i guess

Highlights: Tango funèbre, Les Toros. In a nutshell: poetry in motion. Chanson (noun) 1. (French) Song. Specifically: music-hall or cabaret song. (Source: Merriam-Webster) 2. French-language singers/songwriters for whom the quality of the text is essential and where the rhythm of the music follows that of the text. (Source: RateYourMusic) For this album, having the translated lyrics certainly helped me understand Brel's appeal. Chanson seems to have a unique brevity to it and the music style can be traced back to the Renaissance era. Pop music and folk music would be very different without the influence of chanson. It may not be for everyone, but it's historically important. Overall: 5/10

Never heard of this before, but it does nothing for me, just generic soundtrack music to me.

This guy has a powerful voice. Sadly my French is tres mouvais; and that makes it hard to appreciate or enjoy. Still I can feel talent in his voice and band, and therefore shall give this 3 stars.

Not something I would put on very often, but an enjoyable listen.

It’s French it’s music

The audience was going crazy Didn’t hate it though

Most french thing I've ever heard in my life. Wish I could understand any of it!

An interesting bit of variety given recent offerings. Enjoyed the ambience it gave and found the sound evocative and entertaining. Unsure how that would stand up to a second listen once the novelty has worn off…

Went into this having no idea what to expect. Ended p really enjoying it. No idea what he's saying, but that ended up not matering.

Can only imagine that. PSG and Wemby winning tonight had something to do with getting this today

Kinda cool

Not a fan of lyrically driven music, and as someone who does not speak French, the lyrics didn't distract from enjoying the actual music this time around. While I could not understand the lyrics, I could not help but imagine a dark smoky room filled with people sipping pastis. As a fan of Lawrence Welk, I can get behind some polka and champagne music. It was a fun listen, even if it is likely something I will never revisit.

Interesting, and a great change from the rock standards. I knew Brel from covers by Alex Harvey and Bowie - I enjoy the melodrama of chanson, although my french isn't good enough to get all the lyrics. That said, I didnt find the songs quite as attention grabbing as i'd hoped. Perhaps there may be other Brel albums that would better represent his style? A strong 3.

Interesante. Corto. No me he guardado ninguna canción.

Even though I couldn’t understand the lyrics, for some reason I really enjoyed this one. Probably won’t give it another listen, so it settles in at three stars.

It is very, very, very french and a bit weird. And it's... not bad?

01) Amsterdam - 8,0 02) Les Vieux - 8,0 03) Tango funèbre - 7,5 04) Le Plat Pays - 8,0 05) Les Timides - 7,5 06) Les Jardins du casino - 7,0 07) Dernier Repas - 7,0 08) Les Toros - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,50 (75/100)

This is really not my interpretation of chansons !

Okay so this is French but he's very pretty NOTICE: I am rating things out of 5 now bc thats how much you can rate in the app. - Amsterdam: It's nice- he has a powerful voice but kinda sounds like he has phlegm in his throat. Oooh it starts picking up at 1:20. It feels like a street performance- I would throw a dollar in lowkey. Omg the orchestra. This is wonderful. OH woooow. 4/5 It was boring at first but when it picked up I ascended into heaven. He's so beautiful as well. I need him to serenade me. - Les Vieux: I hate all the clapping at the start but once the song starts it's quite sweet. Slow dance-y. It's pretty much the same tempo the whole song- no high, no low. 3/5 bc it's sweet but anticlimatic - Tango funebre: He's so silly in this one haha. Very tango lol. Ooh it's kind of building up now. Wow I really like this one- it's quietly powerful. I love the piano for this one. 3.5/5 I love the music but not his voice in this one - Le plat pays: This is very sorrowful and melancholy. I can hear the emotion in his voice. It's so so beautiful. This might be my favorite so far. Oh my goodness the voice combined with the violin and the guitar. I'm genuinely in heaven holyyyyyy 6/5 - Les timides: The piano is soo cute here. His voice is so so powerful in this one wowwww. It's still a little boring though. 2.5/5 - Les jardins du casino: Ooh very waltz-y. I love the music with his voice it's very pretty. Awww I love this. Not my favorite 2.5/5 - Le dernier repas: Didn't really catch my attention. 2/5 - Les Toros Avec Final: Nice but did not catch my attention. 2.5/5 Overall rating: 3.2/5 :) I like this guy

I know almost nothing about French music from this era, so I feel very unqualified to evaluate this, other than to say that Brel's voice is pleasant and expressive and the instrumentation is correctly unobtrusive to avoid taking the focus away from him. The opener "Amsterdam" is a highlight but the entire package was enjoyable.

Why does this guy kinda look like Mr. Bean? Am I the only one who sees that or am I on to something here? Maybe it's just the hair and the suit. Anyway, this album's okay. It might be the most aggressively French album on this whole list, and that's saying something. Fortunately, that's not a bad thing in this scenario, as the album is actually good. This is a live performance showcasing a genre known as chanson, which is basically just a fancy term for French singer-songwriter music. Is said singing and songwriting good? It sure seems good to me. Jacques Brel's singing is quite operatic. It's not my favorite, but he puts his heart into it. The songwriting actually seems pretty good from what I can tell. As I often do with albums not in English, I checked the translations of these songs and found that the writing is rather mature and thought-provoking, with things like death being common themes. That's neat. I respect that. The music itself is on the more orchestral side and it's not bad at all. The cheering is a little loud in the mixing, but that's to be expected for a 60s live album. Overall, Olympia 64 is a good listen. I might not have been able to get as much out of it as others could personally, but I have respect for this recording. Strong 3/5.

french voice, passionate and interesting, but the quality of the recording is mediocre. eeh

Very lovely but not that interesting for me personally.

Not one I expected to be on the list. French ballads are fine but Jacques Brel is not a contender for the greatest 1,000 list.

Not really my bag but I can see the appeal with this one. I do like the opener Amsterdam. And everything is good and listenable. Its just a bit too big and theatrical for me. I get thays the poipoint and it gets a better grade for it but still not super into that whole deal. I also knoknow basiclly zero French. Oui. And im out. Maybe if I knew what he was on about id get more into it but probably not knowing me. But the music and the sonics of it is nice. Everything sounds good. Can't fault it a lick on that front. Just not my favorite. Still good though

He’s acting aa much as he is singing, it sounds like. And he’s selling out for the performance. A whole lot of bravado and gusto behind the voice. I don’t know a word he’s saying but it seems dramatic and often tense based on his delivery and the music. Can’t offer much critical analysis, my favorite parts are when he changes his delivery from loud to quiet or quiet to loud very quickly. A fun inclusion, 3/5

I don't really know how to judge this. Seemed alright.

Highlights: Amsterdam, Les Timides, Le dernier repas Surprisingly enough I came into this knowing what to expect and I was satisfied. Nice chanson record, but I don't know why out of all of his records they picked a live record. Even though I enjoyed his typical playful expression, not a lot of songs stood out.

It was okay.

Hooray for an album that’s not sung in English! I enjoyed the dramatic, cabaret style music and singing. It’s not an album I would necessarily revisit with the exception of “Amsterdam” which is a fantastic song, but I’m glad it’s on the list. Anything out of the US/UK canon is appreciated.

Okay album. I find live albums quite challenging sometimes but it sounded great and emotional.

My wife listened to this with me and now she's left with a smarmy Frenchman. I'm all alone and destitute. Thanks Jaques!

Amsterdam 3 Les Timides 3.1 Le Dernier Repas 3.2 Les Jardins du casino 3.2 Les Vieux 3 Les Toros 3.3 Tango funèbre 2.8 Le Plat Pays 3 Score: 3.075

not bad for a live album

I was excited when I saw that this was Chanson, although the only experience I've had with Chanson is Serge Gainsbourg. Since that is the only experience I have with Chanson and I don't know how good or bad of an example it is, I'm going to have to say that I like Serge Gainsbourg better. That's not to say that this is bad, don't know if it's good or not in terms of the genre. It's just not Serge. Still a good album.

cute! french operatic music. has a very grandiose feel to it and while I don't think I will EVER return to this as a full album, I can see old french grannies absolutely slobbering over this shit. Fav Song: Amsterdam Least Fav: Le plat pays

Powerful voice for this famous French crooner, but it’s not a style of music that appeals to me.

Turns out French pop sounds exactly what you would think.

Euro fresh euro chic euro cool

French showmanship at its zenith.

While listening to this album I had a strong desire to don a beret, smoke a cigarette and be condescending to an American. Jokes aside, it was a fun album that I never would have heard if not for this 1001 Albums thing. 1960's French pop. Who knew?

Quite interesting! Really enjoyed "Amsterdam", definitely out of my wheelhouse so glad to have gotten this

I feel like I am listening to a Wes Anderson soundtrack. And that is a good thing for me!

Nice background tunes

I don’t know what the hell I just listened too. It wasn’t bad… probably won’t hear it ever again though. Lots of accordion and French for first thing in the morning.

I know a few Jacques Brel songs that were remade in English, so, I have an idea of who he is and how important he is to music of the 70s. This album is nice, wish I spoke French….

Bara fínt sko

Virkar nettur gæji. Lögin bara allt í lagi.

Very fun, but I listened to the tracks out of order and I wish I hadn’t

Usually it's a bit hard for me to appreciate foreign language albums, but this one was fun. 3/5

Interesting music, but the ceiling for this one is pretty low considering I don't know any French.

I can’t help being seduced by something so swinging ‘60s French. Do I love the music or his singing? Non. But do I want to wear a pillbox hat, a minidress and shiny knee boots while whisking through the cobblestone streets of Le Marais on a Vespa? Oui!

Haven't heard of him before which tells you how much I know about chanson. Usually I'm rather indifferent to songs of that kind but honestly this album was rather fun 3/5

very interesting, enjoyed

i didn't think french music sounded like this unironically

Good singing, but very aggressive and non-stop. I wish I spoke French to know what he's singing about...

Obviously, something is lost if you don't know French, but it's still a swinging vibe especially with the live audience element.

Had never heard of this artist and had no idea what he was singing about, but he did it with such gusto and conviction, I couldn’t help but be into it.

At times I felt I was in a Disney movie with French language overdubbed. Lovely stuff.

A bit too French at times

Nothing bad to say about this. Enjoyed listening this. This isn't my go to music what I'd listen to but would happily listen this when I am chatting with friends or something similar.

Unexpectedly cool There’s some cool songs on here - tracks 6 and 8 I’m glad I got to learn more about this guy

He sounds very enthusiastic and the music seems pretty good for the chanson era. I don't understand a word, though, and it's just not for me, I guess.

Good but certainly not my thing.

I have no idea if this is good and I am not particularly interested in listening to enough similar things to figure it out.

A French guy speak heavily into a microphone while a light accordion plays in the background. Sometimes a crowd cheers for the Frenchman. 6/10

Listing to this album I'm thinking, "Shit, I don't live it or hate it. It is dissimilar enough to my experience that it is going to take several listens to understand. Plus, the only version I can find is a fucking double album." My wife says, "Ha, all I can think of is French class." Clearly a neutral reaction from someone who know the music more than me. I'm copping out, for now.

Really cute record. I bet this was a really nice live show. Not familiar with this cat before today, but I dig his style. The showmanship and music is a delight and vocals match impeccably. This was a pleasant one.

not my thing to be honestv

French Frank Sinatra

***a good, easy listening album

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS. AN ALBUM THAT'S NOT AMERICAN OR BRITISH??? NOT AN OUNCE OF ENGLISH?? GOD DO YOU TRULY EXIST?? DID YOU PITY ME? FOR HAVING TO LISTEN TO ALL THAT SAME BORING 60'S AND 70'S ROCK AND FOLK AND DAMN I'M ACTUALLY GONNA CRY. First of why is "chanson" a style? That just means song. What else can I expect from English speakers though? It's like saying Taylor Swift's style of music is song. French songs from that time are so interesting. My French teacher used to play this type of music for class all the time. How wasn't an Edith Piaf album included is beyond me, but hey there is at least a bit of French on here. I have to grab at any crumb of European diversity on here. A Romanian album is never gonna be on any list of this sort, so I have to celebrate what I can. I'm so fed up with that punk, punk rock, folk, grandpa rock. Why include an album that has two sentences on Wikipedia and the arist singing it has like 50k listeners. It's clear I'm not in need of listening to that before I die. Anyway great day, love this guy, though Stromae is my favourite Belgian singer by far. It's a live album as well?? I've just noticed that. It's the best one I'd heard on this list. It's incredible. This guy truly is talented. More stuff like this should have been on this list, but I know that tomorrow when I wake up, another Bob Dylan album will hit me.

Unfortunately I feel this album is somewhat impenetrable as someone that does not understand French. Reading further into the work of Jacques Brel, and even from just listening to this album, it is clear that his music is hugely lyrically driven. Without that insight into what is being said I feel I'm missing a major piece of the puzzle of what makes this work. Musically it isn't terrible by any means, but clearly isn't the central component of what makes these pieces great. It feels like it would be similar to asking a non-english speaker to listen to the music of Bob Dylan or Tom Waits and appreciate everything it brings to the table. It's unfortunate, but I can understand why this would have its place on the list.

Really nothing special, sounds like the soundtrack from an old french cartoon to be honest. Favorites: Amsterdam, Le Dernier Repas Least favorites: Le Plat Pays, Les Timides Rating (out of 10): 6/10

Tango Funebre and Les Timides are real solid songs. The former is funny with pretty opposing lyrics. The latter is solid and has nice tunes. Overall, would recommend for people to give the album a try. Le Dernier repas was really good. Just not lyrics I’d read when I’m feeling in the dumps. His gusto and oomph is a treat.

Pretty good stuff, if you are into it. I liked it about middlin'. Solid 3 for me.

It wasn't bad I'm just not sure why it was included.

Some songs on this album reminded me of Nick Cave, if he spoke French. Overall a really interesting album

I am learning French, so I appreciated this album. I wish I understood a bit more though!

Mukavaa ranskalaista teatraalista musiikkia.

French live album, pleasant Les timides

It's well performed for sure, and it's better than most live albums from the time. However, to me it's not much different. It's a live album from the 60s. It doesn't really compare to the best studio albums of all time. I'm trying not to weigh too heavily that I don't speak French, but it really doesn't help. I am glad I heard it because there is passion and intent behind this performance, but it isn't timeless, and it has been surpassed many times. 3.0/5

My judgement on chanson music is "How much do I want to smoke a cigarette during?" I would've maybe had two to this? But slowly and maybe with a French 75 cocktail. Enjoyed!

5/10 Literally the definition of French chanson. Live album (ugh) but it does work better here than on some of the other albums on this list. It feels like the kind of music you'd hear in the background of some movie where they're trying to be all sophisticated and shit. Good but just not my kind of music.

The first album I’ve gotten that is in French. Also probably the most stereotypically French “chanson” album I’ve ever heard. I like Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour better. This guy was good but his lyrics were a little manipulatively depressing.

3/5. I think there's a decent amount of things to recommend this album. There's some lovely melodies and arrangements here, and the singing is this great opera-tinged pop style. That said, the genre is best known for it's lyricism, which will be lost on non-francophones (I am one). The one other pleasant side to this music is it's not like listening to early Bob Dylan as a non-anglophone — in that case, some of the music would not be good enough to justify the rough singing. The music stands on its own.

I will always love a french jazz moment!

The most French thing I've ever heard. I imagined myself floating down a river with a baguette and it wasn't so bad

One of those live albums that almost don't sound like a live album until the clapping. The guy is an amazing singer, and his band is great too But.... as good as the guy is, French is such a hard language to make sound good when you sing it, and it's quite harsh on the ears when the rest of the music is so je ne sais quoi. The only song that really works effectively with the bite of the French language in song is Les Toros Avec Final, which is one of the most pleasantly dramatic songs I've ever heard But other than that, the principle of the album is spectacular, it's just how coarse and harsh French sounds in song that are supposed to be romantic or whatever. So all in all, it's about as close as a 4 you can get without rating it a 4 in my opinion. I don't really want to take off 2 whole stars just for that one issue I found, but it's consistent enough throughout the album that it just bothers me

Album 1036 of 1089 Olympia 64 - Jacques Brel (1964) Rating : 3 / 5 There’s an obvious language barrier here, so I can really only comment on the performance rather than the lyrics themselves. That said, it doesn’t take long to recognize that Jacques Brel was a seasoned, deeply expressive artist. The passion in his delivery comes through loud and clear, even if you don’t understand every word. Throughout the listen, I kept thinking that this felt like hearing a French Leonard Cohen - intense, theatrical, emotionally committed, and fully present in every moment. This is clearly an album where the performance is the point. You can almost picture him on stage, pouring everything into the room, and I have no doubt that seeing this live would have added another layer entirely. What surprised me most is how listenable it turned out to be. I went in expecting this to feel distant or inaccessible, but instead it held my attention and even won me over at times. Not something I’d reach for often, but absolutely worth the experience.

I really like how the tracks in this *drive* forward, matching with Brel's sharp plosives and the natural sound of the french language. It fails in the way many (most?) live albums do, its production quality is poor, it was clearly not recorded in a studio and it doesn't do anything interesting by virtue of being recorded live. I also feel like this would hit way harder if I knew what he was saying. Overall, Im pleasantly surprised, when I saw it was french-pop this morning i audibly groaned. Happy to be mostly proven wrong (and a little pig-headed)!

I get it. There’s super passion here.

Never heard before. Felt nice and energetic, I wish I knew more french to follow the lyrics properly as it quite a focus in the record. Happy to see some music from outside the US or the UK in here.

Not necessarily bad, yet also not really enjoyable or seemingly worthy of inclusion on this list.

"I am French le hon le hon" shut the fuck up dude

This album has Screamin' Jay Hawkins Energy, mixed with Leonard Cohen. I don't think I'd listen to it again, but I enjoyed it for the novelness of it.

Interessante, gostei. A primeira música me lembra Greensleeves. Muito massa a língua francesa pra música. Muito bonitas as músicas, gostei. 3*

I was explaining the project to a friend today, before I'd revealed my album, explaining how there is always a chance I get an album in French, or Portuguese, or... Did you wake up craving dramatic French show tunes? Well buddy, do I have just the album for you! The delivery is unhinged and full of character, but I'm not sure I'm rushing to see a Frenchman shouting poetry at me for half an hour. I’m not entirely sure what I’m supposed to say about this album. It’s Jacques Brel, armed with a perfectly average voice, singing songs that feel like they were written for Frank Sinatra on his day off with the exception of the added French accordion. It’s… fine. I’m aware this record carries enormous cultural weight, though that significance is mostly lost on me—possibly because I’m not French and wasn’t born in the emotional afterglow of D-Day. Am I happy this made the list? Maybe? Hard to say. What I do know is that I feel a profound indifference toward Olympia 64, and I’d lose absolutely no sleep if I never heard it again.

5/10 Wow, about as French as a thing could be. Culturally I can't hook onto this, so I can only judge it musically, which is fairly forgettable light jazz, delivered very passionately

Oui Oui am I right fellas??

I'm not sure I'll ever listen to it again unless someone needs a rec for a student film score but it was a nice break from well-known artists

This has Mike C written all over it

I wish I spoke French, alas I do not. I can't accurately judge the songwriting therefore, only the performance. It's nice! ...And that's about it. I hear Brel's brilliance is in his wit and lyricism, which makes it a shame that I can't judge it based on that. On the sound of it alone, this is worth a 3. I suspect if I spoke French this would rank higher for me. (and no, I'm not going to look up translations or find English language covers. That, I feel, wouldn't be in the spirit of the original work.) So there it is: a 3/5, with my apologies to Jacques Brel, and indeed the entire nation of France. I'll pass the apology on in person to my French friend next time I see her.

6/10 Favorite: Amsterdam

I pictured myself driving along the French Riviera with my wife by my side,

This was really fun to listen to, but I think I must be missing a lot by not understanding the lyrics. Would definitely explore more of Brel and this style.

Are songs in English the only ones that rhyme?

Einige sehr schöne, einige ziemlich miese chanson(g)s

Selten Fan von live Alben. Mag Chanson gerne.

Chanson Classics - wuchtig.

His voice ist powerful nice

Pleasant to listen to. Nice to hear the original of a song I only knew in my native tongue. The emotion in the voice is very audible and nice to hear. However it is a dated record which drags it down a bit. 3/5

A relaxing break today. I felt underdressed for listening to this music. I needed to be in a New York apartment in the early 60s.

You can practically hear Jacky sweating under the bright lights. Amazing really.

This album is theatrical, which I do appreciate listening to sometimes. Jacques Brel sings with emotion and passion. I think it would be interesting to see him perform in person than listen to a recording of a performance.

Favorite Track: Amsterdam

Good palate cleanser album, a solid 3

I don't speak French, but he has a pretty good singing voice.

It was fine. I'm sure great for the time, but not my cup of tea.

Having a grasp on the French language, I found it pretty entertaining.

Is this one of those video game mods?

I don’t know, Lloyd. The French are assholes.

A live non-English album by a "theatrical singer" - I'd practically written my 2 star review before listening to a second. That all changed with the first track, which touched parts of my brain that rarely get activated - it's stunning stuff. The rest of the album is a post coital comedown from that high, but what a high it was.

= The Beatles

Two things might immediately surprise the modern listener and both are about passion. The first is the passion in Jaques Brel, the sheer energy; it’s remarkable that he gave so much emotion in such range to all his songs across the performance and then again presumably night after night. The other passion is that of his audience. Clearly the Beatles version wasn’t the only mania on offer in 1964. Brel’s own compositions almost define the French chanson, stylistically and thematically. There’s lots of regret for love lost, remembering of live drunk to the lees. There’s also lots of humour. The clarity of the recordings is technically impressive for the period, though you will notice that Brel frequently drives the meters into the red till they clip, not an unpleasing effect given the emotional delivery style. His voice is very forward in the mix giving the whole a very immediate feel, along with the way tracks apparently run straight into each other without intervening silences. All in all, a record of a performer at the peak of his powers, Bravo, Jaques!

The music itself is actually quite good and the singing is soulful and powerful. My issue is, I don’t understand French so the lyricism and wit are fully lost on me.

Decent listen

i enjoyed it but it never really peeled my ears back if that makes sense. easy listening to listen to while cooking.

I don't understand it and sometimes it a little too much emotion and over the top, but it is also French so...

It’s very French and Live. I have no opinion on this. It is what it is. It exists completely in a musical purgatory. Not special, not horrible.

The only version I found on Spotify was the original 28 minute version so that's what I listened to. I'm sure I'd really enjoy it if I was into French operatic music.

Not sure what he’s singing about but he does it with so much enthusiasm that I can help but be partially entertained. 3/5

Good stuff. No idea what he is on about.

Kunnon ranskaosastoa hell yeah! 3/5

Kind of sneaks up on you.

hon hon hon (im too racist to french people i stg im joking love yall rt)

It was nice to get something that wasn't distinctly American or UK music though as non-French speaking American I couldn't understand any of the lyrics. I feel unqualified to speak to the significance of this. In my personal life I have connected more with Francoise Hardy and Edith Piaf which hopefully have some entries on this list.

Sounds like the French answer to Sinatra. Not bad at all, but not something I 'd listen to again. Probably worth a listen though.

Honestly the album is quite easy to listen to and nice with it being French but there’s little sustenance in it. The album is live, but it is spiced which is a weird combination and results in there being no flow between the songs and no story. What’s annoying is the next song on autoplay by Brel was significantly better. Not bad but disappointing.

While I could only understand about 10% of it. The passion with which he sang garners it a solid 3.

no clue what lyrics were about but he sounded like he had a lot of expression & feeling behind his lyrics.

Tres French, tres stars!

Felt I could only truly enjoy this album if I had my beret on whilst smoking a gauloises

there’s some pleasant stuff in there but i’m gonna put it second to last so far and still give it a 71/100 it’s old timey and not a familiar sound to me and the unfamiliarity is always a barrier to feeling the music so it’s hard to say

Really energetic!

Incredible voice, but hard to appreciate the nuance without knowing the language. Would give it a shot with subtitles I guess.

Hørte en sang🤭 god

Fint. Intet mere intet mindre, meget smuk vokal til tider tho. 2,5

Besides being sung in French. The songs were mostly dark when looking up the translation. Most were show/musical in style. 4.6/10.

Very passionate vocalist — the lead track is the standout. I also quite enjoyed the tango (#3).

Very French. Extremely French. Makes me want to learn French again - 3.5 stars because I can't really imagine reaching for this one but I'd listen to it again no problem.

I enjoyed this as an experience, but it’s hard to appreciate explicitly lyric-driven music in a language you don't speak. One extra star for the cultural significance in France. 3.5⭐️

Very French. Pleasant to listen to while working.

I don't speak French but dang... not too shabby

I want to like this more than I actually like this. I want to be known as the kind of person who is super into Jacques Brel. But sadly I am not that person.

Much like the various Brazilian and West African albums in this collection, my lack of non-English-language comprehension really limits my appreciation of the clearly passionate musical stylings of Mr. Brel. (I'll also admit that French/Belgian chanson singing isn't really my thing, which doesn't help much.) The highlights for me were probably the ominous "Le dernier repas" presuambly somebody died by the end?), the combo "Les toros" and "Tango funebre", and his reprisal of "Les bourgeois"; it also helped to have videos of his live performances for most of the CD/reissue-only tracks (tracks #9-#15), so you could at least see his presence as a performer. I'm sure Brel afficionados would consider me blasphemous for saying this, but I have to say that Scott Walker's versions of Brel's songs are more entertaining, or maybe it's just that they're easier to hear when they're in English (even true of Brel's "Au suivant" vs Walker's "Next").

I'd have chosen the 1965 Reprise album "Jacques Brel" over this one but what you gonna do? Love Amsterdam, Les Vieux, and Les Timides especialment.

Doesn’t seem like an essential album to me. I don’t speak French so take that with a grain of salt. 3 stars.

At least it is short. Good for live French big band :). 3*

Honestly ends up in the same spot as a lot of the bossa nova, salsa, etc. music I've gotten on this list. It's soundtrack/envionment music, and not listening music to me. Still pretty cool French music I'd expect to hear in a restaurant/French film, but yeah.

This was fine. Better than Scott Walker. It sounds like it would be a lot more enjoyable if I spoke French.

In the mafia type of stuff

It’s all in French, which is great melody and a beautiful voice. Unfortunately the song writing is lost on me, but a great listen

Made me feel like I was in Ratatouille. Best song: Amsterdam

This was alright. Not the type of music I'm generally into, but it seemed okay for what it was. A little same-y, but I think the short length actually worked against it in this case. Probably won't listen to it again.

Sacred Blue, perinteistä ranskalaista musiikkia. Ihan kyllä siistiä ja monipuolista. Hyvin musikaalimaista ja välillä ihan sirkusmaista pelleilyä. Parhaat: Amsterdam

I was expecting French crooner in the mood of Dean Martin but am pleasantly mistaken. Without understanding the language I could still feel the emotion. I have always enjoyed French chanson as a genre so this is a pleasant addition to the list.

Makes me self-conscious about my understanding of French. I blame the YouTube 'polyglots' - if they're 'fluent' in 6 months why aren't I after 15 years?

#122 - Knew of Brel from a Sabina song ("cuando en un si bemol de Jacques Brel, conocí a Mademoiselle Amsterdam") but never listened to him. Clearly unique. Bit too dramatic for my taste.

It’s kind of hard to rank an album without being to understand one of the main aspects of the artists talent (being his lyricism) as it is in French. However, I can appreciate the passion he puts into the vocals and the theatrical instrumentation. I can also see how he influenced artists like Leonard Cohen (with the way he delivers the vocals in a poetry-like manner) and Bowie (with some of the way the songs sound. Because of this it is easy to say it is ahead of its time and influential but for personal enjoyment-wise it was decent at best. It was short though which I can appreciate as it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Favourites: none really. Overall, 5/10.

It was fine, but I am writing this review 12 hours later and don't remember the album. Low 3.

I cannot understand much of what he's singing but I enjoy the performance and his passion as he vocalizes

Competent

Closing your eyes and pretending you’re sat in a courtyard in south France drinking bottles of red on a warm clear night really adds to the experience

alright. french

The no-holds-barred intensity of Brel's performance on this live album shows his absolute commitment to his art. However, not having any familiarity with this particular genre, it all sounds overly theatrical to these ears, but griping about that might be akin to complaining that opera singers sing in high-pitched voices.

I’ve been learning French for months now so this was a treat, I’m still very new but I was able to pick up a few phrases. All that aside this was an enjoyable listen

A very dramatic sounding live album. Pretty good.

I have no idea what he’s saying but I feel like I am in a swank Parisian night club sipping absinthe by candlelight. The cigarette smoke twirls around my head like wisps of intrigue in the air. I know the first song is about finding romance in Paris. I am assuming everything he’s saying along the same vein since it was 1961. He was a French swagger of Sinatra or Martin during the same time period. Based on vibe, I like it. That’s about as far as I can go.

Random thoughts: * I actually have heard of Jaques Brel before thanks to our French exchange student, Rose. :) * I can't understand a word he is saying. lol * Susan listened and was translating some it for me. It was particularly interesting. * I enjoyed this but it will not be something I couldn't live without or will likely pick up again except when I want to feel French. Which will happen with a baguette, cheese, and a bottle of wine some night.

Culturally important etc. Glad Bowie & Walker did my listening for me though.

Fairly enjoyable

Interesting - enjoyed it - would never have found and listened to this without the 1001 album generator

I couldn't understand anything he was singing about here. It was almost like he was speaking some language entirely different from English!! :-)

It sounded like he was a good story-teller. I don't speak French so this obviously I only understood the musical parts. It sounded French. Whatever that accordion does is the most quintessential French sound. Anyway, it was an interesting listen.

Cool addition to the list, but it still didn’t grip me the way I hoped it would. Wanted to like it more than I did.

Well that's the most french thing ever commited to tape. Quite enjoyed it for what it is, very authentic, definitely seemed to use a key stage 3 vocabulary most of the time so I had some idea of what he was banging on about. Good for the list but obviously not converted to the classic french crooner genre.

3 - cool album

French Sinatra

Aged well

not bad for being french

Glad I got to listen to it, but I can’t say much about it. I enjoyed Brel’s voice and the backing was pretty sweet. It just didn’t stand out too much since most of it sounded all the same. I’ve only got high school French so I couldn’t make out most of it so just an alright listen.

Beautiful singing. Interesting songs. But unless I learned French and really soaked in this stuff for a long time, this just isn’t going to resonate with me.

I don't feel very strongly about most French chansons. I feel this would have been nostalgic for my grandparents, but I didn't grow up on it.

This feels like weird little guy territory knowing nothing except what i heard on this album. This very traditional style of singing and song writing does not hit for me but if someone was playing one of these songs on a boom box in a subway tunnel, I'd feel very french. 2.5

Interesting

No entendí nada pero estaba bonito

One of the more salient aspects of this live album is the prevalence of the vocals. I think they overshadow the actual instrumental by quite a bit. I also think the clapping by the audience is also perhaps a bit too loud and can be distracting. The songs themselves are alright, they do not standout too much but they aren't bad either.

Sounds like show tunes.

Great album and performance. Makes me wish I knew French though.

Another nice surprise and reason why I enjoy this exercise. Definitely a record that I would’ve not discovered otherwise, and an example of one that thrives due to the atmosphere being captured live. I just don’t think it would’ve translated as well in the studio. Makes me wanna open a bottle of wine and go listen to my Serge Gainsbourg records.

Enjoyable. Didn’t understand a damn word of it but it was a nice change of pace. Hearing French reminds me of a Damien Rice song called The Professor and la Fille Danse in which he starts singing in French towards the end. And it’s beautiful. For me Jacques is a little harsher to my American ears but I still thought it was quite pretty. I’ll finish it off with some French wine and cheese… 2.75

Def an album that benefits from being a live recording. I’d like to go to France now. Or maybe I shall just drink some wine and eat a baguette. 2.75/5

This is a great instance of why I'm this generator-- to find music I haven't heard and maybe wouldn't have found on my own. It was fun to learn more about this style of songs (chansons) and to read all about Jacques Brel's interesting life. The music itself, though not my style, was interesting and his performance breath-taking. It would be much different seeing the power of voice live. Very old-world and operatic, like a classically trained singer at the height of his craft. As pretentious as it sounds, I'd like to get his music on vinyl since I think it will sound good with the warmth and crackling.

I don't mind this, but it's not something I would ever just pop on, and there's nothing in here I'd ever re-visit. It's quite dramatic at times, which I kind of dig. But of course it's in French, I have no idea what he's singing about, and it's all a bit old-timey. This might be quite generous considering it's not my cup of tea, but I'm giving it a 3.

Dude can sing really well but the clapping after each song was too much.

You're watching a Romcom, and the scene when the two love birds hit it off begins. In the background, you hear this upbeat "fancy" music sung in a language you can't understand as they begin dancing, and flirting with each other. That background music is this album. Favorite Track: "Amsterdam".

I have no idea what he's saying, but this is good.

Charismatic and powerful voice makes for a cool listen. Something different from much of the rest of this list.

This style of music, the "chanson", supposed to tell a story and to be theatrically performed. Unfortunately, like I imagine many people on this site and reading this book, I don't speak French! I can only judge it on the bombastic nature of the performance and the musical quality. Thankfully, both of those are fairly good. His voice is powerful and you can hear how he enunciates every word and changes the force of his voice when things get more emotional. So from a purely technical standpoint, it's good, and it's a style which I know really nothing about. It's not as interesting to me as some of the other non-english language styles we've had on here, but it's exactly what I would imagine would be in the soundtrack to any film or tv show set in France during the 60's and 70's. Subconsciously it must have some sort of cultural staying power.

Nothing about this screams “you must hear this”. Maybe it’s the instrumentation, maybe it’s because the lyrics are in French, but it just all sounds expected and uninteresting.

It’s kinda whatever, I would have liked it a lot more if it was more jazzy, and I feel like you kind of need to understand the lyrics if they are so central to the songs and I can’t. The instrumentals are fine I guess, just everything else is so low down you can’t really hear it. It’s not bad really, and some of the parts are really good. Overall around 5/10

19/08/2025 I couldn't appreciate this as it was not a language i understand. Spotify listeners: 1.1 million.

Oh man, this is SUPER French, huh? At least it doesn't seem problematic like the last French-speaking album we had. I have no complaints here. I didn't understand much of anything, but you can't deny this guy Jacques can belt it. Solid 3.

This might be the most French sounding thing I have ever listened to in my life. The album cover did not inspire confidence, but honestly this wasn't a bad listen. Was it a great listen? No. But I can understand why someone's grandparents might have gone out of their way to hear him sing. He's got a deep power to his voice that comes through clearly on Amsterdam. He also sounds like he would be the snootiest of individuals -- something about the inflection of some of the delivery just makes me think he would be insufferable. In any case, I can't knock this, but I also wouldn't buy it. 3 / 5.

Oui Oui

This nerd on the cover kinda looks like James. Ooooo we're going super French here. Can't understand anything this dude is saying. It's pleasant enough but nothing that really bumps it up. Sounds like it should be in an old timey French film.

Fun! The album displays some of the flaws of any live album (e.g., audience noises), but Brel’s distinctive voice is the focus. I don’t have enough French to relate that well to the lyrics (my bad), leaving me to relate to the vibe and Brel’s energy. Within *those* strictures (again, my bad), the album isn’t quite essential.

Loved everything but the awful French sax

French but actually pretty good.

This is basically Ne me quitte pas 8 times in a row. It’s a fun musical style for a little bit, but you don’t really need this many songs for it

It's an albumful of French songs in a style Wikipedia describes as "lyric-driven" so it's pretty rough out here for me Good thing I can just listen to the album and hear the fun and the flair in it, it comes across as very... playful, maybe Decent variety and he's got a lot of character

Is this French or something?

quite a change of pace

Can fuck with some french music.
