This is one of the many albums that highlights the interest of Jazz musicians in South American music. It's lush, calming, not too crazy. You miss some highlights that other works with Jobim had. Still pretty cool, you can't do anything wrong with that one here!

Very good stuff. I'm quite familiar with all these pieces, given that I'm married to a Brazilian who plays these songs regularly. It's really nice to hear these jazz interpretations. O Pato is one of my favourites and I particularly loved this Stan Getz version. Next step is to check out its sequel, Jazz Samba Encore.

Oh my gosh I love this album. The blend of saxophone with samba rhythm is frankly genius since it pairs so well with the overall relaxed feel. The upbeat nature of the songs is infectious, making one feel uplifted and joyful. I love this album so so much and I will definitely listen again

Getz / Gilberto is a favorite of mine. Was excited to listen to another Stan Getz album that I had never heard before. Really like his work and enjoyed the more upbeat tracks on this album - in true bossa nova fashion, it had me nodding my head while listening during my commute. Especially love the inclusion of Charlie Byrd, as I’m a sucker for jazz guitarists. Only complaint, it didn’t quite grab me with memorable hooks as much as some other jazz albums. It’s very enjoyable, but can fall into “background music” territory at times. But overall, will definitely be listening to this again.

What a nice and relaxing joy this album is to listen to... and what great musicians. When it comes down to jazz, I've always had a slight soft spot for the "Brazilian" influenced versions, so this album was a lovely surprise!

A new jazz album to me, this was a very enjoyable listen. Great as background or careful listening, and danceable at times.

Desafinado was one of the most pleasant things I have ever listened to. The jazz sound with guitar picking mixed in really did something for me. I guess I didn't know I enjoyed bossa nova music like this, but I do.

Well, samba continues to not "wow" me too much, but just juding what's here: yeah, it's nice. Relaxing. Pretty in parts. I can see myself throwing it on again, and, I'unno, at this moment that's enough for me to score this thing a 4.

As I sort of thought going into this, it’s a very nice 4. Stan Getz is pretty damn good at this whole bossa nova thing, and this is a really fucking good bossa nova album. As I said about Getz/Gilberto, what’s here is incredibly relaxing, very enjoyable, and super easy to listen to. As I also said about Getz/Gilberto, the only reason I’m at a 4 is mainly just how rigid the album can feel; not in terms of the compositions themselves, but simply the instruments at hand. This album sticks deeply to its shaker percussion, its cowbell, its guitar, and its saxophone, and it never really strays from that. The compositions are great, but even at just 33 minutes, there’s eventually gonna be some fatigue from hearing the shaker percussion in every single track without ever really pausing that much – the same goes for the saxophone riffs, or the guitar melodies, and the cowbell especially sticks out on the last track. With all of that said, there’s not a single bad track here, and I really did enjoy the hell out of this – it really could go to a 5 on a subsequent listen or two, because the vibes are just immaculate throughout. It’s a great album, it’s a great listen, and it should be on the list – I wish there was a vocal track or two (or even just a track with a little more bite to it) for variety’s sake, but that’s just my wishful thinking. It’s a very deserved and very strong 4. Definitely deserves to be on the list.

Stan Getz has a solid catalog, and this is no exception. Put on "Samba Dees Days" while you're making dinner and dance around the kitchen. Sip on a glass of wine while enjoying Getz's signature breathy sax style on "Samba Triste" and "Samba De Uma Nota So" with perfectly paired runs with Charlie Byrd's guitar. Honestly, there's nothing about this album to dislike, it's just so pleasant and easy. This album screams dinner party or wine bar and tapas. Pair with a nice and light Pinot Noir or medium bodied Cabernet

Lovely album, feels right at home on a warm summer night. The band plays really soft and gentle. Shame this album isn’t any longer.

I hate Jazz. That being said this album is an exception, spreading a feeling like walking down the streets of Havanna , sitting in a cafe and watching people pass by.

Solid white guy jazz album. I enjoy Getz' sax playing, he was an inspiration for me when I was in high school. This album just doesn't have enough bite for me to love it.

I've always enjoyed Charlie Byrd. And I totally enjoyed this as well. A+

A gem – brightly polished and glimmering. Even discounting for the faddishness of the bossa nova craze at the time (not an exact comp to the Macarena, but probably closer than jazz people would like to admit), it holds up beautifully today, thanks to the restrained and elegant and fluid playing that delivers a languor at once sweet and savory. "Desafinado" and "Samba Triste" and "Bahia" are all first-rate – with lovely suppleness approaching a haunting voluptuousness, with Getz's somewhat austere tone playing against Byrd's whimsically-reflective picking (particularly on the closer). One doesn’t need a mojito to enjoy though it may help. Not sure why the editors credit only to Getz, when Byrd’s name is on the masthead, too. And it’s sad that the artists who collaborated on such a sweet and swinging and fully copacetic piece of music would break up (presumably over its commercial success – what is it about the music business that causes such acrimony? Or is it really just human nature? Depressing to consider when really one should be inspired by this music to think only about idealized Brazilian lovers (or just a long beach holiday) we might be rewarded in another life.

This is totally the sound of 1962. It sounds super dated now, but also effortlessly cool at the same time. I can just see Audrey Hepburn walking into a Rio café to this...

It his best album, but solid none the less.

Good listen through, it sat comfortably in the background, calmed me and stayed varied instead of monotonous. I feel like this would be best listened to live, but as a recording it held much of its charm.

Light and breezy! I feel like I should be enjoying the night sipping a cocktail in a cigar bar in Rio. The upbeat tempos keep you interested and it’s not the double album length, so that’s a huge plus. Overall very enjoyable.

Another awesome jazz album, with a samba flair per the title and its a perfect blend. Felt like I was at the Rivera on a balcony in the summer looking out at the ocean, a drink in my hand and a cool breeze at my back.

Unobtrusive coffee house jazz can be very relaxing.

Can't go the full 5 b/c at times it's just a weeee bit vanilla compared to other bossa nova recordings of the time. It's hard not to envision the opening to a game show in those moments. But that's through no fault of the artists, more their influence on popular music to come. Really liked the versions of 1 Note Samba & Bahia.

The word Jazz in the title nearly doomed this but it was surprisingly decent. Generally enjoyed it.

It’s not often that the album is well advertised in the title. In this case, Jazz Samba is a subgenre in of itself, combining Brazilian samba with American jazz, particularly the bebop style, to create a sound that taps into both rhythm and improvisation. This album fits that description to a T. I appreciated the technical craftsmanship that saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd accomplished with their respective solos. The manner in which they play comes off as very free flowing, near effortless. Pair that with the especially good rhythm section, where the tempo and structure evokes a range of emotions throughout this album, from danceable like with “Samba de Uma Nota Só” to somber and reflective with “Samba Triste.” I’m not sure how well this album can be retained in memory, given the improvisation side of jazz that doesn’t follow closely to set patterns. But for what it’s worth, I had a fun time with this album as it gets a solid recommendation.

Classic Stan Getz. And one thing I love about this album over Getz/Gilberto is the guitar playing - I think Charlie Byrd was a much better guitar player. This album kicks off with Desafinado which is fantastic and would fit right in on the Getz/Gilberto album but I really like the guitar part better here. The rest of the album is good but not great. I would listen to this every now and then but it's not something I could listen to all the time like Getz/Gilberto. Solid 3.75/5.

Great, smooth jazz

It's a real smooth, chill time, sitting nicely in the background. The sax is soft as butter, and I like the nuanced guitar in there. It is what it is. 3.5 rounded up.

Favorite: Samba Dee's Days In spite of my History of Jazz class in college, I can't say I know how to appreciate the nuances of jazz. I know I liked this, though, and will come back for more.

Extremely influential music stylings import for the USA. Really enjoyed listening to this, perfect for a hot weekend afternoon, but I will say I mostly really dislike what Americans went on to do with Bossa Nova. That Sinatra album was a chore.

In my youth I wouldn't have appreciated this like I do now. Well produced, well executed, not my preferred listening routine, but I still enjoyed it.

This is white people jazz, there's no getting around that. But it's recorded really well and it's smooth and it's great to cook to. I enjoyed this album quite a bit. Listening to this while driving is not the best way to hear it but I still enjoyed it. When I got home and started making dinner with my wife, I turned it on again. I would like to see this album not make someone dance. So don't drive to this, dance to this! I know it's not your kind of music but just try letting go for a second and let this album sweep you off your feet.

The album is short, but each song feels a little too long.

On one hand, this seems like a very safe record. On the other, I was struck by how clean and flawless every performance is on this album. I really enjoyed the interplay of the guitar and sax — it was just so pro from the first to the final note. Also, recognizing that this is something of a first — the first samba album recorded by American jazz musicians — I guess it's wasn't so safe in 1962.

OK, let me get the review this album out of the way. It's great, no doubt. It's chill; the performances are nuanced and tasty; and it was enormously influential. So yeah, it's at least 4 stars. But boy these guys have a hard-on for jazz samba. This is the 3rd such album we've heard, and who knows how many others there are. I like jazz samba, too, but two Stan Getz albums is a bit much. And meanwhile, there's no Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Louis Armstrong, or Charlie Parker? I get that jazz isn't the most popular genre for the people doing this project, but let's at least represent the breadth of what the genre has to offer. I would easily swap out that Asturd Gilberto solo album for Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come and this one for Rollins' Saxophone Colossus. And let's get rid of Kid Rock in favor of some Louis Armstrong and Limp Bizkit in favor of Charlie Parker.

For me, samba in my jazz is like the lime in the coconut.

This is the definition of "easy listening", but I don't mean that as a slight in the least. This collection of tunes brings the sound of Brazil to our ears via a couple of white Americans. The sounds are cozy, sexy, and overall smoooooth. This was a peaceful listen, and I'm having a hard time justifying 4 stars when I just gave Dave Brubeck's Time Out a full 5 stars only a few days ago. They're both delightful, so average these scores out to a couple of 4.5s.

3.75 stars. A pleasant album to keep you company, especially if you're doing something like cooking or using public transit. It's a shame that this style of music sounds like royalty free music, or a backing track, just based on how it's been used in media over the past 30 years. It's a delightful array of sound, and the saxophone is captivating. Favorite song was "E Luxo So"

Ah Stan Getz. Man he played with almost everyone and bookended big band through smooth jazz. Not a huge smooth jazz fan and this bossa nova foreshadowed the smooth jazz movement but I sure can appreciate his sound. Check out some of his other stuff when you can. Has a real woodsy sound and always finds a way with his horn.

I have a very limited experience with jazz and even smaller experience with bossa nova. That said, it's an incredibly well recorded and played album. Effortless to listen to and enjoy with little to no knowledge of the style, which is always a fantastic marker to me.

First foray into samba/jazz, so it's virgin territory. The *ideal* album for carrying out kitchen/cooking/cleaning tasks - it's exciting and engaging enough to have you doing stuff without detracting from the quality of your physical work that needs doing.

This is obviously super nice, and hey, Stan Getz. I don't know what to do with it, though, in terms of rating it. Is it too easy on my, today's ears? Too much 'Elevator Muzak' for listening to it in 2024? How do I rate these albums, really? So I cheated, hah! I try not to look at the 1001, usually, but I had a peek and sure enough, the *other* one is yet to come, so I'm happily giving this a 4 without feeling bad about it. Still, sublime.

Wasn't sure what to expect but I enjoyed this. Nice collection of pretty tunes, made the room feel a bit warmer. Probably a good length though. Seemed to fade into the background and forgot it was on towards the end, not sure if that's a particularly good or bad thing though.

I've always wanted to simulate life in a 60s elevator for over 30 minutes. That being said, not an offensive listen. Very easy listening as background noise. Quite relaxing, nice instrumentals. Nice saxophone parts. Has a real "kellermans holiday estate" feel (Dirty dancing) Could nearly beat Opus 1 as hold music

Well, I wrote my thoughts about this on my phone earlier today when I was listening to the album, but somehow the comments did not save. Soooo, I like this album, and I LOVE JAZZ, possibly/probably as a result of listening to music like this when I was a young boy. My dad played music like this (even though his favorite musician was Herb Alpert, as well as loving Hank Williams)... around the house and I remember when my parents had cocktail parties for their friends they'd have this playing (in the early 60s)... so yeah, this is deeply rooted in my psyche as happy music. I grew up to appreciate much more complex stylings of jazz; fusion jazz, techno-jazz, Sun Ra, etc... Okay, I give this a strong 4 star rating!

I definitely wasn't expecting an instrumental album but I loved that it was as it really allowed the saxophone to be the main star of the album. The album is well paced and interesting enough that it doesn't feel like a slog to get through. I would definitely recommend this album for people wanting to start getting in to jazz. outside of some minor flaws I really enjoyed this album would strongly recommend to others looking to get into jazz/ bossa nova

Not a jazz expert by any stretch of the imagination, but this was great music to wake up and get into the groove of the day. Great to learn the history of it as well. Sent me down a rabbit hole to learn more!

Pretty decent jazz album. Very calm and relaxing. Nothing in particular stands out to me. I appreciate the technical skill level involved. However, most of the songs sound the same.

The album that got Americans into Bossa Nova. This album is pleasant enough to listen to but doesn't resonate with me as much as bebop, cool, and modal jazz. Perhaps it's because both Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd are both Americans interpreting a Brazilian style.

Stan Getz it right on this one. Paired with Byrd’s Brazilian style, this blend of sounds creates a unique and stylized bossa nova standard. Won’t be quick to put this on at my next BBQ, but as a regular fan of good jazz, I enjoyed this quite a bit.

The wistful interplay between Getz's jazz sensibilities and Charlie Byrd's bossa nova experiences make for a landmark fusion of styles at once both somber and serene.

This is very very good. A whole vibe. Not quite the status of Getz/Gilberto but I do Charlie's guitar work! Apparently this was the first of its kind and kicked off the Bossa Nova craze in the US. Easy 4/5

Smoother than the slithery smooth backbeat that runs through the first track "Desafinado", downright tropical vibes ooze out of every nook, close your eyes and just imagine you're walking down Copacabana Beach in the 50s, cocktail in hand. Jazz is a misnomer as this is Bonito Bossa Nova, and your hips will sway sitting in your chair.

There is a fair bit of jazz that seems to be considered essential listening. Honestly, I didn’t expect so much through this generator, yet here we are. I haven’t heard of Stan Getz or Charlie Byrd before, so I’m not sure what to expect. Fingers crossed it’s not naff! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Desafinado, Samba De Una Nota So I really quite enjoyed this. It’s the sort of jazz that makes for a nice background music. It sent me back to playing The Sims on the computer under the stairs, as it felt notably similar to this soundtrack. I find that some jazz goes too far into the land of bizarre (“it’s not about the notes they play, it’s about the notes they don’t”) whereas this stays very listenable. I can certainly appreciate that, and it enjoyed this a fair bit.

4/5. A well-rounded jazz album that doesn't overstay it's welcome and keeps the solos nice and sweet. It feels experimental but not amateurish. The players play off each other so well, and there is a genuine excitement among the playing, not sure how but it feels that way. I don't necessarily think it's perfect, but the songs do sound fresh and unique.

Pleasant, but uninspiring first listen, three stars. Then I listened again, in the evening after a drink.

3 Stan album I've listened to this month and they just seem to get better. 7 nice smooth tracks here with Charlie Bird. Bossa Nova at its best

I’m not really a jazz fan, but this was a good album.

Always nice to hear a good Samba album. A good half hour of it, light and breezy. Enjoyable and not too overwhelming. A nice change of pace and sounded really good. Will listen to over and over.

Felt like I was in a Tom & Jerry cartoon which is most of my exposure to jazz. I enjoyed it.

The sound of Club Blue without the modern electronics and sub bass. Smooth as the finest silk.

I get the feeling that jazz music is to be enjoyed secondarily whilst primarily partaking in a social activity. If you happen to listen to it alone, you wish you'd be sitting in a smokey cocktail bar, sipping on a good drink and talking the good talk. At least with this album.

I love a nice bit of jazz. Makes me feel like i'm in a coffee shop in paris in the 1920s. This album however brings the samba and jazz together so nicely that it brings a whole new life into the jazz. This is the kind of album that's nice to listen to no matter what time of day it is, but the upbeat tempo does make you ready to party. Sometimes the lack of vocals are a nice break and almost medative. Have to say I really enjoyed this album, a bonus is the length sometimes you don't want to spend over an hour listening to a single album. This album was jjust long enough that you felt like you experienced it as a whole but short enough where it didn't drag on.

Could fit in a japanese lounge.

Yet another jazz classic, and this time it’s a bossa nova record. And dare I say, it’s the first one that I like fully top to bottom. This album is more rhythmic and sorta dancey, reflecting the bossa nova style. And paired with Stan Getz’s fluent and elegant saxophone playing, this album gets its relaxing yet playful and energetic feel which I really like. The first three songs are my favorites on here: “Desafinado” which is apparently a standard of the genre and is incredibly groovy, “Samba Dees Days” featuring a fast, danceable rhythm and a funny title, and “O Pato” with its instantly memorable melody. “Samba De Uma Nota Só” and closer “Bahia” are also good. Overall, a really interesting and fun journey - definitely willing to relisten sometime soon.

This is what you think of when you hear the word "jazz". Just good, smooth listening. Something to lounge and smoke cigars and drink whiskey to.

Very enjoyable bossa nova - cool, relaxed, and pleasant collection of songs. It's difficult to rate jazz albums, because they are so different from the rest on this challenge - since it doesn't have the feel of the completeness of an 'album', it's more like great songs put together,, I'm giving it a 4, but otherwise, musically it is top-notch.

Not bad at all. I prefer some of Stan Getz's other stuff though (Vivo Sonhando) but there were some lovely tunes on this.

4 stars?! Listen, I'm as surprised as you are. This seemed like a quick and easy fail. Bossa nova? Saxophones? Lounge-lizard jazz? Straight to 1-star jail. But I'll be damned if it didn't grow on me. I can 100% see this being the perfect background music in the right situation. More surprisingly, it was INTERESTING. There was still an energy to it that was completely missing from Getz's other album on the list. Don't get me wrong, it's still almost impossibly chill. But it wasn't the utterly flaccid, wet noodle, deflated balloon animal of an album that the later "Getz/Gilberto" was. I don't know. I didn't hate it. And I really expected to.
