Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Jo, men det här val väl fullt godkänt.

Starts as a soft-punk or pop-punk album and delves into slightly heavier tracks. A nice album to introduce punk to the masses. Good sound. Mid 3

It was okay but the lead singer annoyed me a lot

Pretty good overall; I liked the music, definitely had an interesting mix of 70s and 80s sounds, but not the biggest fan of the singer’s nasally singing.

Nothing memorable, feels pretty boilerplate late 70s

Not a bad punk album. The vocalist was an acquired taste, but the band sounded great. Favorite Song(s): "Breaking Down", "Coty of Fun", "Creature of Doom"

Not bad. Some bangers and the instrumentals were cool.

Pretty enjoyable listen. The production feels almost like a live recording. Another Girl, Another Planet and City of Fun were my favorite songs here.

One of the great mysteries of life is how an artist can stumble upon three minutes of transcendent perfection and never be able to produce anything that even remotely reaches such glorious heights ever again. Another Girl, Another Planet is such a great song. I played it twice in a row while going through this album. The rest of the album is serviceable, workmanlike power pop, though none of it is especially catchy or memorable. Years ago I bought a two-disc set that contains the first three albums plus singles after reading about The Only Ones in one of my favorite music books, Kim Cooper and David Smay’s Lost In the Grooves. I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to the whole set. I usually get to Another Girl, Another Planet and listen to it on repeat.

Did not listen to the full album but did enjoy Another Girl Another Planet

I found this album frustrating. The 'punky' stuff is great, but the production and style seems to vary wildly from track to track and the cod-reggae riffing is not as enticing. It was hard to settle in and enjoy this all the way through. Language Problem was new and enjoyable and from this I can see what all the punk kids were making a fuss about in 1978. And I like that Perrett's voice is so distinctive. Some hit, some miss.

Always loved Another Girl, Another Planet, but disappointed by the rest of the album. Like the style, the voice, but just not the songs.

This sounds really fresh to my ears. Great production and some really energetic songs and performances. It's probably not the sort of stuff I'd have on regular repeat, but it's definitely cool. Favourite tracks: Another Girl, Another Planet, City Of Fun, Language Problems.

Had never heard of this band before. Pretty solid proto-punk stuff. More like proto pop punk in a way because those hooks can be pretty catchy. They aren't grimey or hyper political. The first few songs are the highlights though. The album kind of feels plainer as it goes along.

Yep yep British punk power pop etc got it decent

Another Girl Another Planet and then some other stuff. Sometimes it’s okay to let one hit wonders be one hit wonders

Never heard of them, kinda love it.

Album *The Only Ones* is not "the only one" I hesitate to include in my own ranking of 1001 essential LPs--there's not enough room for all sorts or good to great records in said ranking, unfortunately. But this album sure is at the top of my list of potential candidates. There are only a couple of tiny things that make me hesitate to directly include this debut in my own list, but at the end of the day, those small issues have their weight. First, there's nothing as catchy as wonderful single "Another Girl, Another Planet" in it. Which doesn't mean that the other tunes are fillers or duds--just that the album's dynamics somewhat suffers from that contrast between this legendary single and the rest. Secondly, Peter Perret is a great performer and vocalist, with an unmistakable style--a lazy drawl that certainly has its charms for many--yet maybe such a style is a little too one-note in the long run, which can be tiring for some listeners. Finally, had single "Lovers Of Today" been included in the original record, there would have been a way to create an overall stronger tracklisting for it. I'm probably splitting hairs here, but I have no choice. I'm in the middle of that run of 1001 albums, and I know I can't cram everything in my own ranking. In that realm of late-seventies, early-eighties rock bands using the lessons of punk and post-punk to rejuvenate older styles such as glam and pub-rock, I will always prefer the Soft Boys and their stellar songs to The Only Ones, as objectively great as they were. I need room for *Underwater Moonlight* in my personal ranking--a far more varied and dynamic LP compared to *The Only Ones*. And if taking that Soft Boys LP into account means I have to sacrifice The Only Ones' debut, so be it. Ain't life cruel? 3/5 for the purposes of this list, translating to a 8/5 grade for more general purposes (5+3). Number of albums left to review: 436 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 263 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 135 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 170

Another band I've never heard of. The vocals on the 1st were weird. It got slightly better after that. Doubt if I'll revisit this.

Big fan of the vocals, reminds me of Violent Femmes. Surprising at some of the instrumental choices that almost sound jazz-adjacent due to the Rhodes-like piano. Unfortunately beyond a couple songs it started to get a bit flat for me, so as an album it's only a 3.

At first I wasn't sure how to feel about this album, but doing more research helped assure me that this album should be on the list. It's an interesting bridge between the early stages of British punk mixed with 70's psychedelia and pop. Highlighted by mixing rhythms, tones, tempos, and sudden changes between those in the songs from all three different styles.

Decent without being spectacular

Ça chante mal, ça me plaît

I wonder what it's like to be 15 seconds into your first track, and you realize that you need to fire your singer. The good news is the singing gets better, sort of, after the first track. Musically, this is all pretty good stuff. "The Beast" is a good track. This is another album that if it's on, I'll listen to it, but I doubt I would add this my playlist.

I had never listened to this album before. I am glad I got to, though I don't think I will listen to it in its entirety again.

Clash/Sex Pistols esq.

Writing this before I listen: these guys are some punk/alt-rock group from Northamptonshire or something like that. They are generally unhappy and the album is lauded for speaking to a disaffected British youth. Lead vocals will either sound like the singer is drunk or is Cockney personified. How'd I do? Update: I was completely wrong!! They're from South London not Northamptonshire. Perrett's vocals leave a lot to be desired and sour what are otherwise great tracks. Like a worse Lou Reed. If this album were released without vocals this would be a 4/5

Another Girl, Another Planet is a great, timeless power-pop masterpiece! I wouldn't have heard of The Only Ones if it wasn't for a superb live cover of the song by the Replacements. The Mats do the song justice, but do the Only Ones have any other decent songs? The rest of the album is okay, at times they sound a bit like the Buzzcocks, punky, power-poppy, while at times it's a little dull and uninspired. Not to say it isn't a good album, it's that maybe it's top heavy and it's hard to top a song like, Another Girl...

5/10. Was kinda meh, and then one of the songs that Spotify played after the album had run out had a sound in it a lot like a cell phone vibrating on a hard surface, which left a bad taste in my mouth at the end.

Pretty fucking lugubrious for a “power pop” album. 5/10

I think the voice was a little flat and unfortunate, but there was potential that I liked. The length was perfect, no complaints. If the voice was different it’d be much better.

An otherwise decent album overshadowed by some seriously questionable vocals. Best track: Another Girl, Another Planet

Not bad, decent tunes, oddly deadpan vocalist

Could be worse but a bit boring. "No Peace For The Wicked" could have been a Velvet Underground track

Not bad, not great either. Some really good and some not that great. Some bangers.

Felt very mediocre to me. Didn’t get on with it so well other than the song everyone knows.

First listen was rough. By the 3rd listen I was really coming around. I feel like this is the british version of the Northern Pikes or something. I can def understand why this is an important record to someone with the right cultural context/nostalgia. Also the guitar playing was excellent. 3 stars but close to a 4.

Didn’t really grab me.

Enjoyed this. Great songs. Impassioned playing. Shows promise.

I gave it a 2nd listen. It's an interesting garage band sound, at moments sounds like the Violent Femmes (ah, high school days!). And there is that punk sneer to the vocals ...Some good sounds but changes style constantly. (Another Girl and Breaking Down are very youth targeted, and I can imagine them doing well a tragically cool alternative live music scene in the 80s. Surprised it was the 70s.. .This sounds more like a well made demo tape than something ready for radio. It has signs of attitude, or of a potentially great guitar band strutting it's stuff. I hear some Doors and Stones and even Patti Smith sounds - but I find the vocals depressing. Pity that heroin stopped them in their tracks, no pun intended. Interesting historical stuff but not going to listen to it again ... not quite there for me

Another Girl, Another Planet is one of the great songs of the late 70’s. The rest of this album is more interesting than outstanding. I like the slower tunes, The Whole Of The Law & Breaking Down & I do like City Of Fun. With a few more listens, I may learn to love it.

Bit messy at time, especially the singer, but the music was good enough. Nothing great though.

Tuneful power pop. But they definitely weren’t the…only ones making it, and there are better options out there.

Cat: I kinda dig it! Great sound, great vibe, gotta be foundational punk here. (I looked it up. It is not. Still considered a great punk album) AJ: British Violent Femmes. Wonder if the Gizzard Lizzards love them. I think this album is pretty cool. Love when they space out some. Vox kinda wear on me after a bit, but pretty cool. Punk pop Brit pop dash of psych pop. Pop pop pop.

This album includes their classic new wave song, Another Girl, Another Planet. Unfortunately, the songs alternate between frothy late 70s new waves and late 60s/early 70s underground psychedelia. Songs such as Breaking Down, are like Zombies outtakes. It produces this slow-fast-slow tempo to the album. Ultimately, it sounds like two good albums, smashed together into one odd (and not in a good way) album. As singles, it's great. As an album, it's like sonic whiplash.

Hard to pin down how I felt about this one. Kinda Clash-y at times, maybe some The Doors sound too at times. Overall, fine but nothing great to me.

Goede melodieen, maar is technisch gezien klinkt het wat amateuristisch. Prima album! ***

A strange opening followed by an extremely strong second track. This is the kind of weaselly power pop I can get behind. The rest is honestly a mixed bag. Some songs slap, some songs are stinkers. Hard to assess the overall quality of an album when you only want to listen to half of the songs. Given it's incredibly strong single and the chaotically fun closer, I'd give it a soft recommendation.

It’s meh to be honest

The first two tracks of this album are wonderful songs. The rest…. are just fine. Generally a decent album, but it starts so strong that the rest of the album feels quite underwhelming. Fav tracks: The Whole Of The Law, Another Girl, Another Planet, Language Problem Least fav tracks: City of Fun, As My Wife Says

Well I know where the Libertines got their shtick from now. Interesting power pop (proto punk?) that contains another Girl Another Planet. Languid vocals with strong backing.

Never heard of them before but I can imagine them growing on me

Pretty good album and one incredible single.

Another Girl, Another Planet is great. Everything else is meh. A reluctant 3 because it could've easily been a 2. I'll keep listening to that one track and forget the rest.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, tremendous guitar work present throughout all of this Favourite song: Track 2 - Another Girl, Another Planet

An interesting one. Singer Peter Perrett's lackadaisical drawl occasionally works in the favor of this record, and occasionally against. There are some cool musical ideas here, especially the jazzy breakdown of "Breaking Down", but sometimes the songs get so close to something great and stop short, causing almost something akin to blue balls. I'm going to assume some members of The Strokes had this one on their record shelves. Favorite tracks: "The Beast", "City of Fun", "Breaking Down", "Another Girl, Another Planet"

Nikad nisam slušao van Another girl Another planet i simpica je new wave ali isto mi je jasno zašto su mahom zaboravljeni

typical brit rock

Few decent songs, voice kinda grating at times

Ah yes. Some more late 70s British punk from a band only the writers of this book and like three construction workers from London are really passionate about. Despite having the worst album cover I've ever seen in my entire life it's not that bad. It's completely unremarkable in the grand scheme of things, but then again, so am I. Glad to have some company. Plus I'm a sucker for this kind of music vaguely stuck between real punk and post-punk (RIP Tom Verlaine). Genuinely though - do the writers of this book believe this album is more influential than "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" or "The Black Parade"? Revise your god damn list, Robert Dimery. It's 2023 my guy! The kids want to listen to more albums of German guys smashing metal plates together.

Eh. Wasn't bad just a tad boring.

One or two good hits. The rest passable.

Listened Before? N Never heard of these guys.. which kind of makes sense as the seem to sort of be British one hit wonders. It was okay. The vocals are super sloppy and the music is trite... But I think it may have been one of those albums where you had to be there in the moment and location in order to really appreciate it. I enjoyed the big hit "Another Girl, Another Planet" but I enjoyed "Breaking Down" more. It's 70s pop, nothing more to say... a decent alternative to american disco of the time. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Breaking Down

Surprised! Definitely some derivative stuff but also some really fun Brit pop rock.

Wasn't bad but its a one and done for me.

I’m incredibly confused right now. I actually have no complaints about this album or any songs. Instrumentals are good, it fits the punk genre well, and I actually think the lead singer’s voice connects well with my earballs. Yet, much like a book without pictures, I began to lose interest after 15 minutes and my mind drifted off. There was nothing that made this bad, but also it was nothing special at all. Just a bunch of old guys who groomed a teenager and made him the lead singer of their midlife crisis dad band. 2.75 so we’ll say a 3 but that feels a tad generous

Halfway through and I f***ing love it. Breakin downnnnnnn is a keeper. The lead singer is not very good, but the music is great. Wanted to give it 3.5 if I could.

It's ok

Better than i expected it to be.

Totally didn’t realise that this is the band that wrote Another Girl Another Planet!

Not unlistenable, but not quite my cup of tea as far as power pop/punk goes.

So it's not just a song by UFO Well I knew that as I remember 'Another Girl Another Planet'; let's see what the rest is like. It was more melodic and slower in tempo in general than I expected. I would describe it as soft punk.

чё-то не вдохновило

Denise described it as very much an album she would have discovered from 90a TV show Gilmore Girls. Lane played in a band that played 70s bands.

Not earth shattering, but just alright.

Good but the singers voice was kind of annoying to me Album Cover: Don’t get it 2/5

Pretty groovy tunes eh Nolan? Nolan: Yuh

Can’t believe blink covers these guys. p good

Qué raro disco, como adelantado a su tiempo de alguna manera. Tiene un sonido que se me hizo noventero, pero es un disco de 1978. Algunas buenas cosas de rockcito pero nada sobresaliente.

Standard brit rock. Not bad at all but nothing too special

I didn't care for this album much. It's an OK listen, British pop/rock band. Maybe a bit ahead of it's time when it came out, but I don't think there's much that keeps it relevant today.

An act I was aware of the music of, but not in a way so as to have actually known who they are. The first track on this album seems like a bit of a whiney white boy lamentation. Lovely sax though. The second track is great, and probably (I don't know yet) the only track from the album I knew previously. The intro strongly reminds me of The Cars, which can never be a bad thing. When it gets going, it's a much more upbeat white boy feeling, pop-punk, being poppier than punk. I like this track a lot, including the showboat guitar piece. Third track is a different vibe entirely. That bass sounds like it could be an organ at times. But then so does the lead guitar. Breaking down is the name of the track, and the drums are great. The vocalist is fits in nicely around a varied, but thematically cohesive tour of pace, tempo and rhythms... And that actually is an organ, isn't it? Fourth track - City of fun - picks up the pace wonderfully. Lots of reverb on the vocals. Showboaty guitars again. Tight bassline. The Beast is another irksome white boy lamentation. Although the bassline is pretty neat. Unfortunately, the rest of the album becomes quite fatiguing quite quickly. There's nothing, per se, wrong with it, it just feels like it doesn't add anything extra.

Tja wat was dit nou eigenlijk? Niet vervelend verder maar kan ook niet zeggen dat ik het opzienbarend vond.

Pretty good. Kinda reminds me of Television and Modern Lovers a bit, but in a more new wave way.

An okay album, nothing out of the ordinary and nothing memorable.

I wont remember it in a couple days, but still enjoyable

The vibe on this album is really good, everything fits from start to finish. However, it's not enough catchy or engaging... or it do not contains anything special to makes it a stand-out album. I had a nice moment listening to it, tho. 3 stars for me!

I really rushed through this album/didn’t pay attention, but from what I did hear it was pretty boring. Nothing really caught my ear.

The only ones of The Only Ones I knew was Another Girl Another Planet, which is one of the greatest pop songs of all time, so a good basis. You do fear though what you're going to get when bands are only famous for one song. But what a song. The Libertines owe these guys their entire career, and did the heroin to boot. A lot of Violent Femmes here, but less angsty. It's good, nothing stands up to the obvious highlight, but it does feel like a record that will grow on you with repeated listens, fair few tracks with a lot going on. The final track, Immortal Story, is a banger.

I’ve always meant to check out The Only Ones more in depth since hearing and loving “another girl, another planet” years ago. But to be honest, that’s the best and only worthwhile song on this album.

Pleasingly sneery. Liked the punk and noise elements. Hear a lot of the vines in it.

Pretty good

Classic punk, pretty good.

Some songs were good but it lacked consistency.

It was fine.

Punk, 1978. Of course not one of the greatest punk rock record of that period but a really enjoyable and funny one. Also the song "Another Girl, Another Planet" is an incredibile banger. Maybe too many fillers, but still a very solid project.

Very nice

Nice opening with saxophone and shimmering guitar...not a fan of this singer at first. As the album goes on, the rest of the band makes up for the singing, and I got accustomed to it. Overall not bad. Worth additional spins.

Solid punk rock, though the singer is not my cup of tea.

Doesn't hold my attention enough to warrant a purchase, but still a good album. Reminds me of early YLT, Feelies, maybe like a Soft Boys. The Beast is good. Nothing turns me off. Some really cool guitar work. Maybe a little samey sounding song-to-song. Can't imagine I'll remember it enough to put it on unsolicited.

Sounds like this album heralded new wave and having heard and loving new wave this album fell flat for me.

Only Ok.

my god the Whole of the Law track was awful. SuuPpeEer wAAVvy sounding and not good. Another Girl Another Planet is a decent track. I like it. City of Fun has a great start to it.

kendte dem ik, men ok

Well it sounds interesting to me - the first two tracks are bangers but either this album is a grower or it’s bland - it felt a bit more like the latter but going to keep an open mind.

The Only Ones lay down some great bones on their self-titled. I was surprised by how slurred and dark the songs ended up being. Most are short, many are Shaggs-like, but there's plenty of instrumental skill under the surface. On the vocal side, I'm not sure whether to read the lyrics and delivery as laconic or simply underworked.

U nekim trenutcima mi je top u nekima stvarno nije pa pada trojka. "I used to have a notion I could swim the length of the ocean if I knew you were waiting for me" awwww 🥺

Pretty solid early punk - it’s got the sneer and the occasional disregard for melody, but is otherwise structured, in turn, and polished.

An alright introduction. They get better throughout their career this is just okay. I honestly was expecting more.

Standard pop punk here. No doubt the brilliance of another girl another planet. The rest of the album doesn’t quite live up!

Decent. Have heard 'Another Girl, Another Planet' and I think a couple other songs. This list seems biased towards British New Wave bands.

Seeing as how the album started with a saxophone solo, this was never going to be a 5-star review but I really thought it would get four stars. At least, I did at first. But the vocals and lyrics, man. They're so bad. And they don't have to be. Look, I love the Violent Femmes. I really do. And Gordon Gano's (Violent Femmes) vocals have a lot in common with Peter Perrett's (The Only Ones) vocals. But, where Gano's vocals are raw and natural, Perrett's are definitely put on. "How could you possibly know that," you ask? Because, suddenly, at track 6 ("Creature of Doom") Perrett can sing. I had to double check to make sure they hadn't switched vocalists, the difference was so stark. No, that's definitely still the same guy which leads me to the only logical conclusion: the vocals up to this point were bad on purpose. And I can't excuse that. All that said, the musicianship is really good. The MUSIC of the songs is all just great. Perrett is the problem. The vocals are bad and the lyrics are, more often than not, just stupid.

Another of the British list writers put bands only British people would know on list entry. I've never heard The Only Ones and after today I probably will never again. 1978 is an era during a time of great change in music, and the punk / post-punk sound is probably the most vibrant sound getting changed. The Only Ones sound like they're jumping on a popular bandwagon sound, and while there are many bands that are just as guilty (cough, Sex Pistols, cough) they don't excel at it. This freshman album is a good example of Neo-80s New-Wave-Post-Punk, but it's also forgettable and really makes me wonder what makes it's addition to a list of must listen albums. Overall it's okay. 3/5 for the album. 2/5 for its inclusion on the list.

Great tune, so-so album.

Not really into this one…kinda just boring for me. It didn’t hurt me to listen, but it just blended into the background.

Some pretty good 70s British shambly punkish poppy rock here. I liked it well enough and there are some good hooks. The deadpan vocal lead could have used a bit more variety for me to listen to a whole album. Maybe this is better enjoyed occasionally than in heaping portions.

Like every other Brit Rock album like this: good production, boring and shitty vocals. Overall a pretty boring album

Loud and echoey, youth but with a little bit of somber. Unfortunately for me it's not sinister enough, so I doubt I will keep them in my favorite list.

Having only heard Another Girl, Another Planet before, I was expecting a punkier album. There's actually a lot more variety on here than I'd expected - and on the strength of the first three tracks, they can actually pull it off too! City of Fun is just thrashy fun, but feels more earned after Breaking Down. It's a good album. Much more varied than I would have expected. Another Girl is the only truly essential song on it, but all in all, really good.

A great opening track left me gagging for more sax but alas it did not come. Enjoyable record nonetheless

Power pop. Fun.

The missing link between pubrock and post-punk. More about PP here... https://deserter.co.uk/2020/09/only-one-peter-perrett/

More of a 3.5 rounded down

Cest pas pire mais je ne reecouterai pas. Cependant ca secoute bien en travaillant et ce n’est pas trop 8mtrusif. Un peu fade pour d7 punk. Tres pop. 3

2021.12.16

It was alright mostly although didn’t think much of the singer’s voice in some of the tracks. 3*

Well there was one stand out song obviously. Otherwise it was fine without being great.

Liked the album, classic rock. Did feel a little repetitive.

This was fine. After Hunky Dory, I was honestly let down, unfortunately! However, this is perfectly okay background music and was pleasant enough for a single listen. I don't think any songs really stood out to me.

Interesting for the timeframe... Decent little rocker

Some very OK British new wave

70s punk rock. It’s fine.

It's fine, but it didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

Another introduction to a band I've never heard of, as well as a new genre of music identified in their Wikipedia (power pop!). Found two covers of songs off this album by Yo La Tengo and The Replacements, respectively, so clearly very influential - but other than the unique vocal style that we've heard a bunch of times over on this list, nothing super special. Still a fun ride, with some hits under 1 mil Saved: The Whole Of The Law, Another Girl, Another Planet*, The Beast, Peter And The Pets

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: The Whole Of The Law; Another Girl, Another Planet; No Peace For The Wicked; Peter And The Pets*; As My Wife Says* Cutting Edge: None *deluxe track Overall Notes: I fear The Only Ones did not remain the only ones doing this kind of nasally noodling. The Violent Femmes took this vibe, went acoustic and hooky with it, and kind of blow this out of the water. Not bad by any means if you have the stomach for this kind of vocal delivery but I can't help but think of this as a lesser version of the Femmes' debut (even if these guys did beat them to the punch by 5 years). Sorry England but chalk another one up for the good ol US of A.

Decent post punk that is a bit quiet. However no son really sticks out, the music turns into background music rather quickly

Different & interesting

Haven't listened to this album in an age. "Another Girl, Another Planet" is one of the all time great punk songs. Nothing else hits that high, but still a great album.

Grupo de una rola, la netflix.

Sadly confirms my suspicion that Another Girl, Another Planet is their only great song. Average indie rock album, enjoyable.

10/5 Fun punk songs, interesting voice but got a little grating as the album went on. Standout Tracks: The Whole Of The Law, Breaking Dowm, Language Problem, The Immortal Story

I liked the song I knew, the rest could take or leave. Feels like one of those bands you had to be there to appreciate

Anyone notice how this album flips between power pop and punk with literally every song (up until the 3 three tracks which are all punk)? What's up with that? Album is coherent, with decent tracks, especially in the beginning or near the end. Middle tracks aren't very good. Nothing I'm particularly crazy about, but those first few songs are catchy, and the last few have that strong punk energy.

not bad

Pretty impressive for its time. It walked some fine line between punk, the doors, pop, surf music....with really good instrumentation throughout and some interesting songs. Very organ heavy. Not necessarily something i would listen to much, but noteworthy nonetheless.

they must be pleased with the later life royalties coming form that big hit from these days. none of the rest of the album really grabbed me but it wasn't terrible.

Never heard of these guys. A 1978 title album. The whole vibe is Bowie/Lou Reed for sure: vocals, saxophone and the like. The Whole of the Law - Slow love song, but, "whole of the law," makes me curious. He's in love. He had to contact this person, and that's the whole of the law? Another Girl Another Planet - I get a Cars vibe from these guys as well. A little reminiscent of the punk genre as well, but not fully in the punk vibe. I'm guessing the Cure was influenced by them too. This is their most Pop-accessible song for sure. Breaking Down - They bring a lot of music between the four guys. Speaking of "breaking down," I love that little Doors-esque breakdown in the middle. Good stuff. City of Fun - Good song. No real feeling about overall. The Beast - Feels like Donovan. Definitely about drugs. Some Beatles influence and Oasis definitely knew who these guys were. Creature of Doom and It's the Truth are kind of nothing songs. The music continues to be strong, but the songs don't really go anywhere at this point in the album. Language Problem - There's a theme of the line "talk to you," all over this album. Language and talking. Must be deliberate. No Peace for the Wicked - Complicated love song. Immortal Story - Oooh - got a Led Zepplin vibe in the opening. But the lyrics and vocals take away from it. These guys have a real musical talent no doubt. I definitely see these guys as very, very influential overall, and yet completely unknown to me. And what a finish!

Some great guitar and arrangements, occasionally cresting into jazz, ska, and other genres. Songwriting and lyrics are good, but the nasally drawl is more annoying and distracting than edgy and ironic. Seems like they would be a great live band where they could jam out at more length.

This was no too bad. Got a bit sick of the lead singers voice, but would listen to again.

that was interesting, for sure. i'd never heard of them, and my immediate reaction was to think the violent femmes had released a VERY early album. i liked it overall, although it kind of wore on as it went.

very reminiscent of that friendly voice punk sound. easy to listen to, but maybe not as interesting for me.

ja ik kan het weer appreciëren maar weer goed voor achtergrond en niet iets waar ik terug naar ga luisteren, hier en daar kwam er toch een lekker gitaartje tussen - zoals peter and the pets

I knew one of their songs, who knew?? It was ok but not amazeballs

Just okay

Don’t like the vocals

I'm not sure how I feel about this album.

Its quite good, but I think I'd only listen to it again for "Another Girl, Another Planet"

I recognised one song and the others were nicely rocky

Surprisingly melodic guitar rock album often tinged with jazzy influences. There's some quite sophisticated musicianship here that help to elevate this above standard punk-rock fare.

Good stuff but very samey

Uplifting but not sappy, thoughtful but not melancholy.

will listen soon too

Cool, vous avez rien inventé

The English Television? Would've been funny if they called themselves the BBC. This album was pretty great, and it's too bad I kept thinking I should be listening to Marquee Moon instead. I wish I could temporarily erase all context and just enjoy this record in pure blank space. They're not that similar to TV anyways. The guitars are more classic rock here. The singer is more punk here. The songs are more straightforward. If Television didn't exist we'd all spend more time outside and this band would be The Only Ones doing this cool post-punk-alt-pop thing. B+

This was good. Enjoyable, some really good songs in there.

Ahh I remember I had another girl another planet saved on my ‘creative zen MP3 player’ it was 4GB and it broke in the first six months of ownership so you could only skip forwards and not back. So if you wanted to listen to a song you had to scroll all the way forwards until you finally reached the track. Sometimes you’d over shoot and have to start the whole process again. Luckily ‘another girl, another planet’ was at the start of the list because it begins with A

Didn’t like their voices but enjoyed the music

I had in my mind that these guys were a one hit wonder.... after listening to the album my opinion hasn't changed

"I used to have the notion I could swim the length of the ocean If I knew you were waiting for me" (The whole of the law)

The only ones, wiec po tylu dniach wreszcie powrot na wyspy, tym razem cos nieznanego, bo nazwa bandy nie mowi mi nic, guglowanie wikipediowe wskazuje na bande ktora dosc szybko sie skonczyla, bo w ciagu 2 lat wydali 3 albumy, a potem malo o nich bylo slychac, material jest krotki, bo zaledwie 33 minuty, 41 w edycji deluxowej spotifaja, gdybym mial klasyfikowac gatunkowo, to strzelalbym w jakis luzny punk, ale discog podpowiada zeby nakierowac sie bardziej na power pop i ma to sens, bo material brzmi jak cos co juz sie slyszalo, nie jest to ciezki odsluch, a raczej przyjemnie dla ucha granie, gitarki daja rade, tak samo drumersy, pojawiaja sie takze wstawki klawiszowe, a nawet trabki, jak na the immortal story, wszystko brzmi tak jak brzmiec powinno, ale jednak nie czuc czegos co wyroznialoby ten material od X wyspiarskich punkowo popowych plyt, no moze wokal perretta, ktory gra takze na gitarce i klawiszach, te wokale wydaja sie byc rozciagane, wyrzucane z jakims brakiem entuzjazmu, a moze raczej rozmarzone, ale jednak jest to chyba rzecz ktora najbardziej zapamietam, bo niestety nie moge napisac tego samego na temat liryki, bo ciezko doszukac sie czegos glebokiego, o ile brzmieniowo ta plyta przypomina mi marquee moon, to lirycznie nie ma do niej startu, najlepszymi momentami na plycie jak dla mnie sa instrumentalne przerywniki, nawet nie koniecznie solowki, ale takie momenty jak koncowka wspominanego the immortal story, ktora pokazuje kunszt skillsowy calej grupy, kawalkami ktore wrzuce na plejke bedzie w pierwszej kolejnosci najbardziej popularny trak bandy, to jest another girl, another planet, ktory zdecydowanie wyroznia sie na plycie, a kawalek zyskal drugie zycie w 2k07 w takim stopniu, ze nawet banda sie reaktywowala i nastepne 10 lat koncerowala, kolejnym pickiem bedzie creature of doom, dziwny material z jednej strony dobrze sie go slucha, ale czuje ze szybko wyleci mi on z pamieci

Track 2 great, the rest pretty good

3.8 - a solid entry in the androgynous David Bowie-inspired post punk catalog. Slinky and muscular guitar work, sneering vocals.

Favourite Track nach zweimaligem Durchhören: The Beast. Fast schon The-Who-mäßig bombastig in manchen Passagen auch, hätte ich nicht erwartet. 3,5 gibts dafür gern!

Semibängeri Emt.

Well the hit is a hit for a reason right?

Just because one song is well known and popular, doesn't make the album good. It was just okay.

Another Girl, Another Planet is a killer track.

Nice old-school rock

Good melodies. I feel like they influenced future bands

I liked this. The guys voice is a bit annoying though

I didn't realise that planet one was these guys

I liked this

Bit boring, Another Girl, Another Planet added a star though

There are just enough songs on here that are just a bit meh for me to give it 4 stars, but it's damn close. This is fun.

Really cool shame I couldn’t find the whole album.

The Immortal Story was pretty good, though it sounds like they are super bored singing it. Overall, very meh. The feeling is given by the singer appearing not to care about the music either.

Nothing memorable about this at all

Give some energy to the singer, he sounded depressed. Pretty lame, pretty boring. I think the only thing that saved this was the drummer. He wasn't bad.

I don't have much to say on this one. Fairly forgettable. Of course by now I'm tired of same samey Brit rock.

The voice is a huge turn off. Not feeling anything on here.

This Album could've been a 4 star rating if only the singer could sing.

Nah you're alright

Instrumentals sind größtenteils ok aber der sänger ist absolut unterirdisch

So, I like the music on this album, but damn, the vocals are tough to listen to. But not on every track, though. "Another Girl, Another Planet", they sound fine. The opening track, "The Whole of the Law", they sound atrocious. I'm not someone that needs the singer to be great, but they just happen to be in the small range that just annoys me. Music is a 3.5, vocals are a 1. Overall, album is a 2.

It’s sometimes endearing seeing what the indie rock heroes of the 90s looked back on as hidden gems, maybe even pivotal in inspiring them to start making music. I know about this album entirely because Yo La Tengo covered The Whole of the Law on Painful. They are a much better band. It’s all fine and Perrett’s vocals in particular stand out - little bit from Verlaine, a whole lot Reed, and various late 70s punk vocalists - just, like a lot of new wave, the songs themselves are so indebted to Rock n Roll it often feels like a rote nostalgia exercise.

Another Girl Another Planet is good but the rest isn't

how drunk was he on the first track I didn't really care for this, it was a bit of a slog

Cool band with pretty terrible singer

Loved the songs and music but hated the singer.

Warbly voice from the get go, some songs were OKish. I liked a lot of the English pop albums on the list but this one missed for me.

how is this essential

Medio lope

weird unsupported half-speaking vocals. some of the solo playing is pretty good but the basic instrumentals are mostly nothing.

Did not finish because I didn't really enjoy it for the first 5 songs

made my ears bleed why would u do my blink 182 like that possibly worst cover in the world

Power Pop: the genre recreates that labelesque hit-chasing nihilism ethos of the 50s and 60s from first principles. Power Pop: the genre that foregos artistic transcendence for the sake of pursuing something equally abstract and meaningless. Catchiness at the cost of unbroken confines. WRT The Genre of Discussion, this typically worthy trade-off oftentimes tends to sacrifice _content_ instead of structural creativity. Power Pop: the genre that 70% of the time does fuck all to earn two thirds of its name’s syllabic composition Power Pop: perpetually winking at the listener with the subtlety of the singer’s cragley british accent drawling "and yooaaaarrr gahnnna get the jooooaaake evenchallleeeeyy" Power Pop: I Love You But You’Re Bringing Me Down. Power Pop, I Love You But You’re BriNging Me Down Power Pop: pretention wrapped in a ruffled pink bow + Chris Bell’s obituary with his dashing little face on the flimsy page and underneath a block quote saying "we just want to write hits, maaaaaaan" ad finito blowjob stereophonic Power Pop: like Icarus 150 times over the span of an entire career, but in the one two twenty times they actually touch tips with that bright perpetual kablooey, they’re horrified as they find the end product’s basically the same as the traditional asphalt-birdshit-style consummation. Whether pecker-scorched or pigeon-splattered, the work is spiritually dead. Power Pop: best enjoyed when the blokes writing the songs have SOMETHING TO FUCKING SAY 2.4

I knew exactly what this album was going to sound like from the cover art. Its rock with some tracks dabbling a bit on the jazzier side, and it's just kind of meh, I'd say. The lead vocalist bothered me, definitely not my favorite. The whole thing was just kinda boring, outside of a few guitar parts that has some flair. Standout track was "The Beast." There were probably one or two other decent ones but I don't know the titles and won't be going back in to figure it out. It's a 2 for me, The Only Ones were not the ones for me. Liars.

Ok 2/5

Bar background music

Good melodies, was so ready to give a 4, but the vocals brought it down dreadfully. Maybe they've got the name because they're the only ones who could have fumbled it like that.

I don't know about this one. Maybe it was my mood, but this didn't do it for me. I tried to listen but I got bored fast.

The wasn’t a good album. It wanted to be something it wasn’t.

Its okay. Can't rememeber anything about it but it was't bad.

I like the first song, but it went all downhill from there.

“Hmm, I’ve never heard of these guys, I wonder why? Oh, they’re not very good, that’s why””

Another Girl Another Planet is an absolute power pop gem. Unfortunately, I don't know if it was the vocals but the rest of the album didnt grab my attention like that song.

I can see some innovative things for that time but I don't think this ripened with age.

Good, not great. 2.5/5

Just an ok listen. There’s clearly some musical ability here, but outside of just occasional moments here and there where things align, the songs overall are pretty forgettable. Except for Another Girl, Another Planet which The Replacements covered nicely in the 80s.

Do you think they were as bored making this as I was listening? I don’t know what it was. Some decent solos and the horns were a nice touch. But it just felt very superficial. 2.25

It’s pretty meh album for me, nothing I would revisit. Two stars. I enjoyed another girl another planet though.

A disappointing listen, this one. There's some quality in here but the consistency of the songs isn't there. The band sounds fine, but I'm not really into the vocals. And maybe it's all because the terrible day I had Anyway... a 2

++: Another Girl, Another Planet, City of Fun, Language Problem, The Immortal Story +: The Whole of the Law, The Beast +-: Creature of Doom, It's the Truth, No Peace for the Wicked -: Breaking Down 5,2/10

I wanted to like this, i really did. AGAP is an absolutely classic in my eyes. Unfortunately maybe that was a fluke. The rest of it grates, his voice grates and i couldn't really indentify any song structure in most of the songs. Sounded a bit like Violent Femmes which isn't bad either. Will stick to the one song.

Other reviews mention how annoying the lead singers voice is. I really enjoyed the music but surprisingly I couldn't get over the voice. Makes Bob Dylan sound like Pavarotti. If the lyrics compared to Bob's I might be able to see past it but after listening to the whole album (and half way through again) I just can't get into it. It sounds like he's whinging the entire album. Pass sorry.

It’s OK but not one I’d listen to again

This left almost no impression on me, I forgot every song the instant it finished. The only thing I can say with any certainty was that I didn't like the flat singing.

I just feel like this list is a lot of the same stuff and it’s starting to feel uninspired

only liked one song

I wasn't a fan of this album. The vocals really caught me off guard and didn't really fit in well with the feel of the tracks; it took a while to get used to. There were one or two songs that stood out slightly more, but I genuinely cannot get over how much I didn't like 'No Peace For The Wicked'... It seemed like a jumbled mess, to be totally honest. I enjoyed the instrumentation, but that was about it. Stand-outs: Another Girl, Another Planet Breaking Down It's The Truth

A full album of this was just too much. Aside for the first track I didn’t mind a lot of the tracks here (especially ‘another girl, another planet). However, i’m not sure i would go as far as saying i enjoyed this, i just didn't hate it. It feels like potential unfulfilled.

I definitely thought I'd never heard of this band until track 2 started. This is another case of really quite liking the instrumental and backing vocals but despising the lead vocalist's voice. He sounds like he's trying to combine Mick Jagger and Lou Reed while sounding like he'd rather be doing literally anything other than singing these songs. 4/5 for the music. 0/5 for the lead vocals. 2/5 will have to do

Was reading the Spotify summary for this band and was enraptured by "raffish and slightly scuzzy romance-obsessed" as a collection of adjectives to describe someone. Scuzzy is such an evocative word! Said Spotify summary also refers to the Cure as "politically indulgent" and Peter Perrett's voice as a "semi-tuneful whine". I gotta say I'm obsessed with this writer. John Dougan, I hope your career is long and illustrious! Oh, the actual album? Uh--well--it's cute! I like "Another Girl, Another Planet" and "Breaking Down" is very chill. Like if punk was elevator music. "Creature of Doom" is also pretty good. I'm gonna say "unobtrusive". I could put this on in the background and forget to listen to it quite easily. Mr. Dougan says this is an influential punk influence but I dunno. It's just...kinda chill.

Mid tempo rock with low tempo vocals. This band sounds uninspired and aimless. The vocalist sounds like he was bored and is just blithering a stream of continuous. Not tge worst thing I have ever listened to, but I won't be listening again.

i just don’t wanna keep listening but i think it’s cute for the time. it feels like something i’d hear in an 80s movie.

not very likeable. vocals dont sound particularly great. it wasnt very boring but it isnt enough to leave me with a feeling. songwriting was that of a childrens book. thats all i have to say

Good music and nice guitar solos are getting ruined by shit singing and lyrics by an edgy kid.

2/5 The only saving grace of this album is that the music itself was nice, but god the singing is awful, the lyrics are corny and I couldn't listen to this again if I wanted to.

The vocals ruined it. Although, they got less annoying after the first few songs. Not great but less annoying.

Had potential, also a really bad singer.

There were a couple of catchy’ish song otherwise forgettable and I don’t care for the vocal style. 2.5

like i think that it couldnt be this bad but like its actually quite bad. go take my 2/5 and never come back to me.

The band is pretty good but the singer just seems like no one will tell him he doesn’t belong in a band

Bad brit pop, why is he trying to sound like bob dylan?

2nd day in a row of a band with a horrid singer. The first track of this album almost made me hit stop, the singer was that bad. He does get more palatable, which is just enough to keep listening. The rest of the band is actually really good, as if you removed the singer and just had the music, I could see myself rating this a 4 to 4.5. Sucks they allowed the singer to ruin it.

Seems like they had some decent ideas, but nowhere near enough talent to pull them off

The singer sounds like he's about to throw up and he desperately tries to stop himself. That was very off-putting. Aside from that, the instrumentals were just ok. Nothing special. But that singing made everything worse. There are songs that work with his voice though, but not all of them.

I can see this as a precursor to so much music from the ‘80s and ‘90s. But I wasn’t wowed by it.

Definitely one of the albums I've heard

Started strong then a dying cat in heat started to wail

I did not like most of these songs

Ni se mi dal poslušat do konca

Reminds me of 2021

I couldn't tell what fucking decade this was for the longest time. Also the dude's voice sucked. Not terrible but damn this project is starting to burn me out cause this was just so bleh. Like 3 in a row now. 4/10

Ordinary to the point of being unlikable.

Odd album. Like listening to the child of Lou Reed and Frank Spencer. The second song should be familiar to anyone in the UK as it’s been used in adverts and because of this the band and the vocalists voice seemed more familiar than they were. However, the album was mostly miss. Some higher tempo tracks, where the weakness in the vocalists voice could be hidden, and some low tempo tracks where it could not. Would I listen to it again? No.

I could have gone the rest of my life without hearing this album. In fairness, it wasn't "bad," just ho-hum and uninteresting. The guy's voice is pretty awful on top of that. I'm not even interested in finishing now that track 8 has started. ⭐⭐

Was a little go slow and somber for my liking, was not particularly unique in my eyes and thus deserves a 2 stars

Too much punk

#834. There was one song at the beginning that was pretty good (Another Girl, Another Planet) but the rest of the album did not seem to maintain that interest for me. 2/5: meh

Unimpressive, punky stuff. A 2.

List-padder that could barely grab my attention, sounds decent enough for what it is though

had a few great songs but overall didn’t win me over.

Man, what the hell is this. Another English wank band that I've rightfully never heard of, I presume. Anyways, enough with the cynicism. I really have no clue what to gleam from this album cover. Is it gonna be a psychedelic album? Dead wrong, as usual. These vocals are something else, huh? The instrumentation is solid across the board, but I just cannot get into the vocal delivery. It's simultaneously nasally and vocal fried to hell. There isn't much in the way of a charisma or presence on these tracks, which is disappointing. The runtime is pretty great, however. I salute you, thirty minute duration. Overall, I was pretty disengaged by this. Book time. Good songwriting. Well-regarded by influential artists. Wikipedia says that this album has somewhat of an enduring appeal with Britics and they also appear to have had an influence on a number of indie bands. Yeah, nah. We're snubbing this puppy. In place of this album, I humbly submit the Ridge Racer Type 4 soundtrack for inclusion on the list.

This is like the Violent Femmes but worse

Late 70s power indie pop in a nutshell, with a sprinkle of early punk. No more, no less. If you're into that, you'll enjoy this one. For me: Boring. Uninspiring. Forgettable.

Reminds me of the Jam's album "All Mod Cons". However I am not a fan of the whiny singing voice and the songs aren't that memorable. The exceptions are the first song "The Whole of the Law" a nice slower number that sounds like something off the self titled Velvet Underground album and last song "The Immortal Story" which has a great energetic jam at the end. 2.5/5

Previously unknown. I almost didn't stick with it after the first two songs, but it kinda grew on me.

5/10 - Favorite song: Language problem

failed to resonate with me - they sound mediocre at best

I enjoyed the instrumental parts: the guitar solos and the way the punk sound is shaped. But the vocals, the melodies… argh.

Never heard of this band, don’t understand how this album is on this list. Never even heard their hit song (Another Girl, Another Planet) before… maybe they were a one hit wonder before my time? At any rate, some of the songs were ok, kind of a punk rock vibe, but the vocals were a bit grating and so bad it made me skip several songs. (2)

A really strange blend of space rock, pop rock, and punk that didn't really work for me. A few decent bright spots, but the vocalsnin particular are some of the most grating I've ever heard. The album is at its strongest when the instrumentals take the foreground. Top tracks: Breaking Down, The Beast

Досить цікавий альбом, але мені дуже не сподобався вокал.

4.5/10

I think I would really like this album with a different singer. The guitarist is really good and there are some sick solos spread around. But the singer, oh man he is not good.

I don't like a whiney singing voice. Or really any whining voice.

Lovers of Today is a great track. Nothing on the album really stood out until that song came on. Not bad but nothing enticing to me for the most part.

Overall not terrible but there was something I didn't like that I can't quite put my finger on.

Sounded pretty cool aside from the vocalist’s voice. Honestly, this would be probably 4 stars if this band had a singer that could actually sing.
