I'd enjoy this like 50% more if the lead singers voice were less annoying and whiny
Pretty anonymous New Wave. Not idea why it's here. I'm sure the members of the band themselves don't know either. Key tracks: Another Girl, Another Planet
It was marginal.
The singing is sooo bad
Can't cope with the singer's voice
2/5
Лайк за шубу и свежий звук для тех лет
Good
Didn’t care for it
This album starts off okay, but it gets rougher the longer it goes. The singer’s voice is downright brutal to sit through, and by the end I couldn’t imagine voluntarily listening to him again. The songs themselves aren't bad, but that voice makes the whole thing a slog.
Not punk or new wave. A middling English rock album from 1978. Engineering, production, and most of the performances are good to great, but the vocalist is quite dreadful. I never did acclimate to his special kind of auditory hell. Song structures are acceptable. I'm not convinced this is an all timer that anyone needs to hear.
Kemur mér ekki á óvart að ég hafi aldrei heyrt um þessa hljómsveit fyrr. Hljómar samt eins og miðlungs 90s/00s hljómsveit.
Not terrible. Not good.
Meh
Average album, but gets an extra star for Another Girl, Another Planet.
Never heard of these guys. Can't stand the vocalist, and it brings down some otherwise pretty decent rock. Almost like a polished garage rock sound, kinda reminds me of Think Lizzy a bit, but ultimately pretty forgettable.
i genuinely can't wrap my head around how boring this is
Vaikea nähdä muuta mitään syytä albumin listaukselle kuin brittibias. Unohtui heti loputtuaan. 2/5
ok but i just dont care 2/5
Wasn't a fan of his voice. Found most of the record boring.
There's been like 50 albums on this list that sound exactly like this I think
Average.
It’s good. No reason to go back but glad I heard it.
There was nothing special about this. 2/5
Badbadnotgood id rather be listening to
Painfully British Best Song: Another Girl, Another Planet Rating: 4/10 Stars: 2
hm i get what they’re doing very early alternative vibes kinda giving the talking heads but def not my fav or go to. just okay i guess but i appreciate the value in this early stuff - 4/10
This was a very boring, bordering at times annoying, punk album, a genre I will rarely enjoy. Some of the lead guitar was cool I guess, and I like Peter and the Pets. Next
An album that doesn't quite know where it sits. Its like a proto-punk, pre-brit-pop, pop-rock album that sounds like something your mate recorded in his garage. There is one good track "Another girl, Another planet" which stands out as a diamond in the rough. The majority of the album is fairly weak lyrically. I guess you could argue that it is impressively prescient, but it doesn't convincingly excel in any of the sounds that it foreshadows and I didn't particularly enjoy listening to it.
Why did he sound like a corpse 2 ⭐️

Something very charming about these guys. I’d like to think this album is a bit ahead of its time, it’s got a 90’s rock pulse to it! …is what I thought for the first two songs. Everything after that devolved and nose-dived into protopunk nothingness that all blurred together.
Good thing the band name is misleading.
How was this the best option for lead singer? The music is mostly fine, but kindda generic. The vocals strip this album of any other merits. Is this a joke inclusion on the list?
I would have liked this album more if the singing was better. Look, it doesn't have to be a virtuoso, but he sounded WAY too much like Lou Reed to me, although at least he was in tune. Somewhat. The music was good, punky, and even had some brighter moments with the horn in it. But the singing just... brought me out of it. NEXT.
Okay.
Yeah this guy couldn't sing, pretty average
The Only Ones are often mentioned alongside the Sex Pistols and the Clash, except, the Only Ones are feel mediocre by comparison.
I echo the sentiment of the current top review. I was SO excited hearing the first few chords of this album. And theeeenn, the singing started. The music all across this album is excellent. Just ruined by some shitty British vocals.
Nothing too great, nothing too special. Fairly good rock 🤷🏽♂️
Had a nasally Violent Femmes vocal. Not awful. But not great.
This is bad singing done right, I guess. His voice is awful, but the song structures (and a pleasant surprise of a saxophone) and general upbeat-ness help a bit. I listened twice. Not good but not bad.
When you want to hear the band but the singer keeps getting in the way.
Remember liking big single from this album Another Girl, Another Planet. As a result looked at buying this album but as everything else on the album was rubbish never bothered. 47 years (how can that be?) later it hasn’t improved. It’s the vocals which spoil it. Trying to hard to achieve that mean Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks sound. Still one good single drags the album up a bit. 2/5 27/8/25
Short lived, definitely got the same vocal style as the clash and the sex pistols - you can hear the drawl of the London accent, but more melodic in some ways! Definitely transports you to this era.
would be cool if i liked the guys voice
Kinda liked the music but the voice isn't tickling me in a right way
Maybe in 1978 this was something special, but it just doesn't hold up.
Other bands have created a similar sound much better than this.
It wasn't terrible ...
This is just mediocre and boring when the "singer" keeps his gob shut. Unfortunately he doesn't so then it becomes annoying.
Decent instrumentals; terrible lead singer
A little bit new wave, a little bit punk. Not a bad mix. But I found the singer's vocals to be a bit...droney and draggy, for a lack of a better way to put it. I had a hard time moving past that. It was okay, but nothing to write home about.
Okay album. Band is better than the singer.
I feel like giving this a 1 star, but Another Girl, Another Planet is such a good song that I think I have to bump it to 2. The rest of it is nothing worth remembering though: bad singing, uninteresting lyrics, ordinary music.
The tunes were ok. The singing was annoying, kind of reminded me of the Velvet Underground but not as good.
It's a pretty average record, a light punk-ish vibe, very UK. It left a pretty fleeting memory for me though, I forgot it very quickly as I didn't find it quite remarkable. Not bad, not great. I liked the record the most when they find a pocket that lives in a sort of moody rock/blues space. But several times in the album they land in a sort of generic pop/rock sound that could've been made by 100 other UK bands. My favourite track was "Breaking Down", I liked the blues-y middle part, the vocals weren't that good but it worked pretty good. Everything else was pretty average.
Track one is just awful. His vocals don't work for these slower tracks. The album does get better, but there isn't much here to recommend overall. Just because it's a British punk album from 1978 means it's worthy of inclusion on the list.
Before I die?! Naaaahhhhh. This is one that shows the UK lean this list has. A bit of British waffle.
This had all the trappings of something I would like--British band I never heard of from he late 70s/80s, punk, new wave, indie-ish... but it missed the mark for me.
This was ok. Whatever.
Easy listen but not for me.
Cool instrumentals! But annoying, whiny vocals that I can’t get past lol.
This album actually bummed me out because it'd be an easy 4/5 if it wasn't for the fact the singer's voice is absolutely god awful, he sounds like if Mandark from Dexter's Laboratory joined a band.
I would do a better job than the vocalist and I do not know how to sing. At least the other instruments were good.
Couldn’t really make this one work….!
Cool until he starts singing and he sings a lot.
Another album which isn’t inherently bad, but shouldn’t be anywhere near this list because it is neither great nor influential, but is included solely because they are from the UK. If you listen to this album, it sounds like something straight from the late 60s with some later punk elements. Unfortunately, it’s the late 70s by the time they released it. Yes, an album that came a decade too late and the results, or lack thereof, shows. Sure, there are some highlights, such as the guitar work in the middle of Another Girl Another Planet, the construction of City of Fun (very interesting throughout). Sadly, the singer’s voice is very below average, like one of those 80s new wave bands, but without the interesting moments. And the lyrics are substandard too, eg the beginning of The Beast, which ruins what could have been an excellent song. It just isn’t, because everything about the signing is bad. When this happens, I openly wonder if this band knew that they were being held back by their front man? Then it occurs to me obviously not, as otherwise some of us might have heard of these guys before.
..
not bad… the lead singer’s voice took some getting used to but there was a save!
2.5 stars. I was impressed by their sound at first, but then the vocals kicked in and they just don't work for me. Lots of singers can get away with a whiny, nasally voice that is clearly untrained - sometimes that's half the charm of a band (Felt, for example). Here, however, the instrumentation is tight and carefully arranged, making Perrett's voice sound jarring and out of place in comparison. Many songs started with great sounds that made me excited to listen until the vocals inevitably kicked back in - pretty disappointing. The album as a whole was listenable but probably isn't one I'll go back to.
Didn’t connect with Peter Perrett’s voice. It made the songs feel a bit dull to me. Some nice guitar work in places, but overall the album didn’t land.
The vocals on this are truly obnoxious. Musically tolerable though.
Certainly not a terrible record, but often invokes the ghosts of other, better albums. The vocalist in particular sounds like he's aping Tom Verlaine on some songs and Howard Devoto on others. The tracks have lots o' rock & roll swagger but aren't particularly groundbreaking.
Largely forgettable, largely mid.
another girl another planet is a fun tune. otherwise, could do without.
aye abbroche ih de hälfti sorry lads, de bachelor macht chli stress und die mukke hilft nöd trotzdem tueni bewerte und gib 2 gstressti viertel woni gloset han da
Man, what is this singer trying to do with his voice? Otherwise, a pretty average effort. Not sure why this album is included on this list.
why am i listening to this fucking shit album fuck my life
ehhh i had a pretty hard time getting into this one
this was so blah to me. ‘the whole of the law’ is such an incredible song—i dearly love [yo la tengo’s cover](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5GtdQEWdYY) of it—so i guess my expectations were too high for the rest of the songs on the record, especially with that as the first track. it can only be downhill from there…his voice was just annoying. like gordon gano but british and without any personal sentimentality and therefore almost impossible to tolerate. fav tracks: the whole of the law
When Television toured the UK in 77, only 4 people heard them, but they all started a band... Okay, I made that up, but still.
cool guitar, shockingly annoying vocals
Please god, don't let this be another completely forgettable 80's British pop band.... Oh and the vocals on this one are terrible? Awesome, thanks.
As it has happened often with albums on this list, a perfectly good record was ruined by a guy that can’t sing. Two stars.
Pretty boring proto new wave album. I haven't come back to this album at all. I will give it extra points because it's a genre I like but definitely not a staple of it. 4/10 Favourite: Another Girl, Another Planet Least Favourite: The Whole of the Law
Mediocre
I guess they're a one hit wonder for a reason.
Another album that benefits from the British bias of the author. Wasn't that good and didn't seem special in unique in any way. Not sure why it needed to be included on this list.
Mediocrity Minus. Boring songs, vocal and music. Not on par woth some average albums on this list, it stands out with its universe of dullness. Soon to be forgotten (at least by me).
Those vocals brought this down to 2/5
soft Pop, alter. Rock, 1978 -> 2
I always get excited when my album of the day is from a band I’ve never heard of; a true mystery. Will it be a hidden gem that slipped my radar? More often than not, however, there are one or two good songs that were super popular in their day but are now forgotten. Today’s is not even that - a fairly talented group of musicians that are let down by very off-putting vocals. Unfortunate. 2⭐️
His voice grated on me a tad too much. Music was pretty good though.
One day fly Oh why oh why Are you on this list Standing betwixt All the greats And their mates Maybe I can't relate To a simple twist of fate A mediocre find But I can leave it behind
Exactly what you will expect. Not terrible and the sound grew on me a bit the longer I listened. Still, not for me.
Das war seltsam und irgendwie hat es mich genervt, aber nicht so schlimm dass es nur einen Stern kriegen würde.
Fnope
Not really my type...
Voegt niet zoveel toe. Beetje nietszeggend, en er staan betere bands in deze stijl in de lijst. Af en toe leuk.
Don’t know how some of these albums are cracking the all timers list, but it’s getting pretty disappointing.
Kind of bland and samey
nah 2/5
1.8
Fun music but vocals by someone who can at least sing would be highly welcome.
Some good moments, but mostly boring.
Had some horns every now and then but no track or anything really grabbed my attention. 2.5 but gotta go one way or the other.
According to my lastfm stats I've heard one song from this album before but I genuinely don't remember it and was dead sure I don't know them. Well, after listening to the album I can say I didn't miss out on much. Not awful but also there was nothing truly interesting on the album either. 2/5
I'm getting sick of British rock.
What a voice! Very British. If this is "power pop" I'll eat my hat. (Update: The wiki list of power pop artists is making me have to eat a lot of hats...) At first I thought I might like this, but it turns out I really don't. Too muddled. Highlights: 'Creature of Doom', the absurd line "I love my mother but I wouldn't want to have sex with her", 'No Peace for the Wicked', rhyming "calm" with "harm"
It's okay. Some decent songs but not my thing.
I'm in love with extreme mental torture.
Apart from their hit single "Another Girl, Another Planet", I wasn't really familiar with this band. Musically the album is all over the place: Power Pop, New Wave, and Punk Rock. The depressing whining nasal vocals, particularly on "The Beast", make me want to shake the lead singer and tell him that life's not that bad.
Didn’t really care for this and would not listen again - city of fun was kind of ok? Rounding up from a 1.5 here.
I don't understand how this might be labeled Punk. Musically, it was mediocre British (Power?) Pop, but the voice was the showstopper.
Whiny English drek
This has got to be one of the most uninteresting albums I've ever listened to. It is yet another late 70s British rock album. HOW MANY OF THESE FUCKING THINGS ARE THERE ON THIS LIST?? I genuinely don't know what to say here because nothing about it is special to me, yet it also doesn't really piss me off. The sound is decent. The singing is kind of annoying for some songs but not that bad for others. The writing exists. Even this album's one decently popular song "Another Girl, Another Planet" doesn't really interest me that much. Despite the band name, these guys are certainly not the only ones to make an album with this style. This album doesn't need to be here. Objectively speaking, I know that this album isn't bad. I just couldn't give a crap about it myself. High 2/5.
It sounds like if David Bowie wrote and recorded an album while drunk.
Songs with such varying topics (like City of Fun, The Beast, Language Problems) shouldn't sound exactly the same.
I have never heard of this group before today. Some of the songs sound very contemporary, while others are very much of their time. I can also hear how this music showed up in the decade following its release. This album was a nice surprise!
More British punk from the 70s… it’s fine
I've heard better music come out of my asshole
Seems like Diet Britpunk. Bit monotonous, and didn't really pull me in, but certainly well-executed.
Almost turned this off during the first song due to the dreadful vocals. Can't really say it got better, but it was less cumbersome. Some of the songs would have really shined with better vocals. Also seemed like the recording and sound drifted vastly apart on different songs.
The band is great but the singer sounds like an extremely inebriated Bob Dylan. It’s too bad they didn’t kick ol’ slurry voice to the curb, this album could have been good.
Fing gut an und hat dann stark nachgelassen :-/ Werde mit diesem Brit-Pop/Punk nicht grün
Komische Stimme
not a fan of the vocals
Middling at best. Seemingly uncertain whether they are punk, pop, rock or emo (which hadn’t been invented yet), the sum of their uncertainty is blandness.
I agree with Mike- firmly in the not a fan camp. His voice grates on me.
it was fine
These guys sound like a mediocre high school band where no member is able to sing.
2.5
Another album, another random inconsequential British inclusion. Unsure why this album is here and who it's for. Another gloomy British vocalist mumbling through each song. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)
No... I don't get this ones inclusion in the list. Makes no sense to me.
Ehhhh
Hmm this ain't for me.
It's an alright new wave punk album that has a few standout tracks. C
I listened to today's album and yesterday's album back to back and didn't even notice when one ended and the other began. Too generic
Overall: 3/10 So uninteresting that it's already left my brain. I enjoyed only one song and it seems to be the band's biggest hit. Big pass on this one. Fav Song: Another Girl, Another Planet Least Fav Song: The Whole of the Law
Not for me
No, no their not!
Wow. Scraping the bottom of the barrel for essential albums again? Someone clearly likes, "Another Girl, Another Planet" enough to nominate the whole album Nothing offensively bad here, but really only that one track to revisit.
Another Girl, Another Planet... the "only one" we care about.
One hit wonder
Nothing overly bad, just not for me
This was bad. A couple of redeeming things I can say about this: they seemed ahead of their time - really sound like a generic 90s band in the 70s. And Lilywhite is one of the first producers I ever knew by name, cool to hear his early work, before he went on to make more listenable music. Some nice moments in the instrumentals. I have a very high tolerance for bad/unconventional vocals, if the melodies are there and the lyrics seem worthwhile - this misses the mark.
A bit whiny for me. It sounds much more modern than 1978, so the date was surprising. Some decent songs but it's not really doing it for me.
Solid less than spectacular background rock.
Was fine - nothing really stood out
Meh didn’t really like this.
Oh boy! More mid-quality UK music on this list! :|
Considering the line up of the band, this should be so much better.
This just isn't for me.
Never heard of this before. Eh.
Couldn’t get through it. The lead just hits bad. The “hit,” Another Girl, Another Planet has great music, but even that is wrecked by the lead.
The music is okay, lead singer is below average, so 2 stars or D+ seems fair.
I wondered why they didn't open the album with Another girl, another planet. It's because there's nothing else of note on here.
The lyrics on this thing feel like a run on sentence.
2 -just felt bland
The Only Ones’ self-titled album, presents a mixed bag of musical highs and lows. While the record features some compelling tracks, including the standout Another Girl, Another Planet, it ultimately struggles to maintain consistency throughout its duration. The band’s signature blend of punk and pop is evident, but many songs fail to match the energy and charm of their best work. The album’s overall cohesion suffers, as it feels uneven, with some tracks falling flat and lacking the impact of the standout hits. Although the standout song demonstrates the band’s talent and potential, it’s clear that one strong track alone doesn’t sustain the album’s momentum. The Only Ones has moments of brilliance but ultimately serves as a reminder that even great songs need a solid supporting cast to make a lasting impression. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 1 STAND OUT TRACK - Another Girl, Another Planet
could have been a nice forgettable 3 star album but the singer's voice is bad - it would fit better if they leaned more on the punkier sound
Punkig, poppig.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
The lead singer of this group sounds like a British version of Lou Reed while he's backed by Springsteen's E Street Band. The further into this album I listen, the less it sounds like the E Street Band, but this was just OK.
The music was just fine. The vocals were hot garbage. I don't know where they found this Lou Reed wannabe, but they should have just left them there
Meh. The music was fine. Couldn’t really get on board with the lead singer’s voice. It was unique. But not a good unique. Like an “I’m surprised this guy got a record deal unique”
Why another album that sounds exactly like 20 other ones I've listened to on this list. Boring music that doesn't sound good shouldn't be on a list of 1,001 albums to listen to. Would not listen again, yuck.
The instruments were fine in this album, but this guy’s voice was rough. Another one of those albums of why is this on the list.
After two songs, it just became random noise that I just blocked out which was probably for the better
As soon as this fool started yodelling I knew it was gonna be a long 42 minutes. His voice is 🤮🤮🤮. I mean it’s not quite Bob Dylan bad but boy is it close. Everything else was great. The guitar, the bass, the drums, even the occasional horns were okay. But his voice was just awful. The lyrics were meh. The instruments saved this from being a 1 for me.
they're trying to play like the Clash, or Violent Femmes.....but the vocals are so out of tune. at least most of the tracks are pretty short so that is a positive.
eh
Not good. Especially do not like the vocals.
I rather like some of the music on here and the instrumentation is good, but the vocals are mostly awful.
Singing was awful, instrumentals were nice.
Definition of a one song album Another girl another planet is fantastic. The rest is filler
Another girl, another planet. The only good tune.
Meh didn’t hate but probably won’t revisit
Not very exciting or interesting
unmemorable. can't even remember where in sicily we listened to it
drums on this are pretty sick, but i hate the singer’s voice
Feels a bit ahead of it's time but still that mumble brit pop groove.
Not working for me.
Almost, but not quite, entirely dull
A couple pretty catchy songs, but overall felt this was just another relatively forgettable "new wave" album.
Was pretty meh about this - everything sounded same-y and just didn’t catch me.
Tediously obnoxious and obnoxiously tedious, along with some disenchantingly mediocre vocals that bring the already stumbling flow down several notches.
I don't know why but I really did not like this
So so. I do like the voices, tho.
This band does themselves no favors by kicking things off with The Whole of the Law which bears both of the serious marks against the songs on the album. Some songs are marred by annoyingly poor vocal delivery (think a more nasal, often flat, less pleasant Gordon Gano) and others lack anything significantly compelling in the music itself to be memorable. Thankfully it is a rare few that suffer from both, but the opener is certainly one of them — at least it is mercifully short. And yet the second song is a certifiable classic. Like many other listeners of a certain cultural niche I've heard and enjoyed: "Another Girl, Another Planet" before. It is a great song that has a bar band gone post-punk vibe going for it that elevates the music paired with a catchy and oft repeated lyric. The rest of the album oscillates between the good and the mediocre summing up to a just below average experience.
For the time this feels fairly unique but man do some of these choices not really mesh. Not a trainwreck and there's some talent but this doesn't do it for me.
Not really my thing
Favorite track: Breaking down other pick: Language problem, Creature of Doom
Some British pop. Not really my thing.
Not much for me to note on this album. Kind of boring. 2.5 stars
i thoroughly dislike "english experimental blah blah blah"
Sounds like generic 90s pop rock, so definitely ahead of its time for coming out in the late 70s.
kende enkel 'another girl another planet' vanop de STiFF compilatie... ik zette me al schrap voor een verwennerijtje... bleek het toch een sof te zijn... laatste nummers probeerden nog wat, maar het kalf was al verdronken, geslacht en opgegeten tegen dan
I've liked some punk-era music enough to look into more of it, esp. PIL and The Fall, but this isn't on par with them.
Lower than average....I don't mind the rock/punk taste.... so it's a 2.5/5
It was okay. I didn't really like the lead singer's voice...
Meh this had a lot of potential after hearing that first track. They came out with some serious jazz pop sounds and then abandoned it completely. It didn’t feel very 70s but it did feel pretty easy to listen to. I never felt like skipping a song but I also didn’t want to go back and hear another again. This is just another album. 5.6/10
kinda boring, I don't like the singer's voice but nice vibe
Why is this even a thing. I didn't hate all of the instrumentals, but could not stand the vocals. The instrumentals were still just a three maximum at rare times. The rhythm of the vocals was kinda cool at times, but not cool enough for me to enjoy listening to it.
Not all that thrilling.
Vocals are inane and absolutely unpleasant. Sadly the band sounds great, excellent guitar tones and playing. Unfortunately can't hide the incredibly drony and unlistenable vocals.
Kind of rough rock/punkish music that I have never heard before. It's alright but probably not really my thing, none of the songs really stood out.
Aika tylsää
I liked this at first but grew tired of it the longer it played.
Not for me
More punk crap.
Didn’t really vibe with these
This was better than I thought it was going to be, but this band really does need a new singer. Put us out of our misery. We also need a ten-point scale to rate these albums. It’s not a 3, but it’s not a 2 either. 2.5 or 5/10.
terrible singer but instrumentals are pretty cool on a couple songs
When I came across this in the morning, I was unfamiliar with the band. Having listened to the album, I now understand why their music had never caught my attention before. It's not that good
didn't even finish, made me uncomfortable, not my style of music, had to skip a lot of songs
Meh
Favourite songs: "Another Girl, Another Planet", No Peace For The Wicked Least favourite songs: Breaking Down, It's The Truth, The Immortal Story 2/5
Not very interesting. The singers voice is a little too annoying and unpleasant at times. 2/5 Won’t listen again
the whole of the law- 4 or 5 another girl, another planet- i hate his voice. 5 breaking down- i really really hate his voice stop whispering. 4 city of fun- 4 the beast- 4 creature of doom- 4 its the only truth- 3 or 4 language problem- 3 no peace for the wicked- 3 or 4 the immortal story- 3 no more boring british people are boring
1978. For some reason this time period in music history was amazing. Punk, rock, alternative... it was all changing, molding, becoming everything it is today. Now we have stuff like trip-hop jazz techno fusion and everything and anything musically one can imagine. All thanks to these daring musicians in the 70's willing to push the envelope. The problem with The Only Ones is that they were not the only ones, and they were not reallly groundbreaking or particular in the massive crowd of musicians breaking new ground at the time. Made worse, the lead singer, maybe a wonderful human being (IDK) sounds like he is on drugs most of the time and often the jazzy fusion bits sound like noise. Unfortunately there are so many bands on the essential listening list from this time period that this album winds up pretty far down the list...
I was really thinking this would be an excellent listen based on the instruments. Then he starts singing. It like he went to the Lou Reed school of vocals and got a D in every class.
Nett - aber spricht mich nicht besonders an.
I'm enjoying this quite a bit. The vibe of the music is really good but the singing is the "I don't care" style singing of a lot of punk which usually doesn't get me engaged.
I try not to diss bands I don't connect with. Creating music is an art and takes work and commitment, so I appreciate everything the band does to get their music out there. I didn't connect with this musically. It could be the day, my mood or whatever. A for effort. Don't let my missing the point dissuade you. That said, I did enjoy The Beast.
70's punk isn't my favorite. Appreciate the history and how they transitioned the sound toward my 80's "new music" genre.
I had to stop half way through. It just wasn't doing anything for me.
Funky guys, great power pop, but I didn't find anything interesting or tasty for me.
I was a little bit puzzled by this one. They are very much one hit wonders, with the excellent single Another Girl, Another Planet that I think was re-released in the 2010s. The rest of the songs on the album don’t really live up to that, with vaguely punkish guitars and nasal vocals but nothing that stands out.
The songs are okay, I like the guitars, drums, saxophone. But as soon as the voice appears, it becomes super-annoying.
This brand of proto-punk/pop kinda music is super hit and miss for me from band to band and even track to track, and that was my experience here. The Whole of the Law? Solid. Another Girl, Another Planet? Good. Breaking Down? Full dislike. And so it goes, on and on with tracks raging from 4/5 to 1/5 for me. Overall, the inconsistent experience made the whole less than the sum of the parts for me with slower pieces not working at all with his voice and faster pieces lacking a hard enough edge to get over the top for me. It would be a 2.5 but enough tracks didn't work for me I rounded to below average.
Another disappointment. I’d heard Another Girl, Another Planet, which is a great song, and was looking forward to becoming more familiar with this band. Then the first track started… His voice is great for punk, but that only applies to 3 of the songs here, and the rest is just forgettable.
Mid. Nothing special or eye opening.
What is up with the lead singer? Did the band begrudgingly let him sing lead because he owned a van and was the only one who could get them and their gear to their gigs? He sucks and I'm at a loss to think of a lead singer who sings worse than this guy. The album was pretty crappy from the start but it managed to work its way up to an unenthusiastic "OK" despite the singer.
Meh
I really like the playing, but I don’t particularly enjoy the singing or writing. It is whiny, which is fine, and repetitive, also fine, but to be both at the same time is obnoxious and one-note when each song feels like that.
The good news is this actually started reasonably decently. The intro of "The Whole of the Law" has this great jazzy trumpet intro (which does not happen again on the rest of the album), and then "Another Girl, Another Planet" (their biggest song by far) is pretty fun. The bad news is it just totally collapses after that, very little redeeming qualities, with two exceptions: "No Peace For The Wicked" was kind of interesting, and "Peter And The Pets" (which was not on the original release) has this quick guitar succession thing that's kind of cool. If you squint really hard the singer sounds just a bit like Lou Reed, but if Lou Reed was British and a bad singer. He has this very mopey British voice, I'm not really into it, "Breaking Down" is a pretty tough listen. Like three times they were jamming with no vocals and I was like "this is ok," then he started singing again and I was like "oh, right". I'm throwing this a 2 because it had a few songs worth listening to, but outside of them I could've been ok missing out on this one. Favorite song: Another Girl, Another Planet Other: The Whole Of The Law, No Peace For The Wicked, Peter And The Pets 1/2/24
Not a favourite.
Pretty obnoxious watered down punk but some of the guitar licks were fun
That wasnt very good
The first track started with some promise but then the singer had to open his mouth. I didn't enjoy most of the tracks because I found his singing to be pretty awful. Highlights: Another Girl, Another Planet City of Fun
Ok album but nothing special
I just couldn't get behind this singer's voice 😕 some of the instrumentals were pretty good
Hmm, never heard of these blokes. (I'm guessing they're Brittish) I was right. The voice sounds a bit like Violent Femmes.
It feels like a band that seems to be in between genres and probably brought about other bands. I think I respect the band, but I don't think I like to listen to it.
Never heard of this band before. Sounds pretty ahead of their time. They were mixing some early punk sounds with what would later become known as alternative rock. I can tell this influenced bands that would come later like Violent Femmes, and even influenced genres such as Britpop. That being said, I wasn't a huge fan of this record. The instrumentation is alright, but the singer's voice threw me off. Nonetheless, I understand why it is on this list.
Generic 2/5
Another girl, Another planet was a clear standout, the rest I wasn't really into.
It sounds good overall but just not for me I guess. The singers voice isn't the best but I usually like that out of tune voice to compliment the technical instruments. Here it just doesn't work that well.
Don't like his voice
Creature of the night...cool wah bass. Bass and guitar play together really well. The beast...awesome guitar solo but not worth sitting through the first 4 minutes Language Problem sounds exactly like every one else at that time. I really wanted to rate this 3 stars due to the awesome guitar and bass parts, but I could not give this a 2nd listen due to buddy's voice. Shame. There's potential there.
It's fine. It just doesn't deserve to be on a list like this. Also would benefit by replacing the lead singer.
Didn't like this singer's voice
This one was tough, I wanted to like it. It started out strong. I actually really enjoyed “Another Girl, Another Planet” and I thought the guitar was very impressive throughout. A few songs in, it began to feel very tedious to listen, I think the lead singers voice began to grate on my ears. However I’m glad I listened to the album.
Bad singing and not stunning enough musicality or lyrics to make up for it.
Mega not my jam; the guitar was sometimes cool but I had to suffer through those vocals 1.5/5
they rly started off on the wrong foot but kinda turned it around. still not my style but not awful
I find the lead singer's voice way too nasally and whiny, which is a shame because otherwise I think I would like this more. But at the same time I really don't think it's doing anything that exciting.... If I was hosting a kinda grunge house party these are the kind of songs I would use as filler in the playlist just because they fit the vibe. But I don't ever see myself seeking them out specifically.
There's not a lot here tbh apart from *that* single. It's... the only one.
Interesting proto-punk jazzy fusion album
Didn't do a lot for me. Pretty variable fayre. Sounds of its time.
Fine, couple good songs even, but I lost interest pretty quickly. Not sure even why tbh, but I'd really rather not revisit this one. 2.5 leaning 2 for me.
Meh…don’t know why I needed to hear this before I die
Pretty chill, good guitar lines. Vocals are not really my style.
Another Girl, Another Planet // 1.5/5
I flat out refuse to believe that this album is notable in any way at all. The jazzy, ska-esque opening to the album was a pretty horrible Trojan horse. The singer sounds like Johnny Rotten on downers--at times it feels like he's directly lampooning him. The instrumentals aren't half bad to be fair. Even accounting for Dimery's UK bias, this is a pretty puzzling inclusion for me.
Certainly aren't the only ones to make this kind of forgettable rock.
Singer can’t sing, and the songs are no fun
Дефолтный рок
Generic rock by numbers again. How the fuck did this get in as something I have to listen to? Not unlistenable, but hugely unmoving.

1.5
One hit and some others. Hate the vocal style.
Acharia facilmente que era algum disco do Strokes ou similar, ou seja, o pop com alguma energia ou punk feliz vem de muito antes.
First song impressions: this singer sounds like my grandmother would sound today trying to sing through constipation. And she's dead. The music is... interesting?? Kinda surprising to be honest. But as ever: singers wreck everything. This could and should have been alright. But isn't. 4/10 2 stars.
Enn ein nýbylgjuplatan. Þetta er... allt í lagi. Vantar eitthvað upp á neistann þarna fyrir mig.
At times, very nice playing; but almost always god-awful singing. 1.5/5
Band is super tight, but the singer is just rough. This band would have been bigger if they would have had someone who didn't sound like David Spade. The further I get into this album the more I wish this guy didn't sing. I am glad it is over.
Rough around the edges punk sound, with lyrics sung in a drawly way that's almost irritating on some tracks (Breaking Down). Album would function well as background noise but not something I want to spend time listening to. Highlight would be Another Girl, Another Planet.
Ehh a pretty weak album. Some songs were good but there wasn't enough to really satisfy me.
Ouf, mes pets sonnent mieux que le chanteur. Au moins ils ont essayé
Good idea, bad execution
They’re trying very hard to do something, but I’m not quite sure what it is.
I think there were one or two songs I liked and that's it. That's a pretty meager score for an album.
A lot of songs on this album sounds like they started out with a good idea, but could only finish it in the most boring way possible.
I did indeed listen to this about a week ago and don't remember a single thing about it so I think that gives a good synopsis of my feelings on it. 3/10
This is only on there because of Another Girl, Another Planet, let's be honest. A fine track but there's only one other song worth listening to on the album, this isn't a must-listen just because of a good song. 2.
I like the single, and the track after it is kind of cool, but it's not much beyond that really. Lead singer's voice isn't great, which works okay in the more punky stuff but suffers when they try to be tuneful. 2/5.
So, would you accept one Test for Australia knowing that you'd take no wickets and score no runs? One Grand Final for Easts playing alongside Arthur knowing you only get to run on with a minute to go? Only having enough time to give Claudia Karvan a party pash before you leave the party? Of course it is a resounding yes to all those things (well..maybe not the one with Claudia..) and its the same with the one hit wonder. For all your artistic angst, passion and desires, if you were told by a time travelling Claudia Karvan that you'd only have one hit would you say yes before you tried to do more than party pash her? I think Nietzsche best summed up this dilemma when he stated "shit yeah"! Poor Pete Perrett. What makes Another Planet so good is completely missing from the rest of this record. My mind turned to Lee Mavers and The La's, another amazing one hit wonder with an absolute cracker of a one hit. It's not all shit, City of Fun swings and his voice works well where in other places it is terrible. The playing is uninspired, pedestrian, forgettable. This sounds a little like a garage band's demos where no one is brave enough to tell the songwriter he can't sing. And so George Saunders fans I really can't recommend this album as good listening while you chase the dragon to your death, though you might want to slip the one hit onto a last songs to hear before you die playlist. 2 for Another Planet.
The Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music named The Only Ones one of the 50 best punk albums of all-time, claiming that the Only Ones were "the closest thing the UK had to Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers, a laconic, shamble of a band who were, at moments, touched by a creative greatness that made you get out of the glare". By sheer coincidence, I just finished watching a documentary on Johnny Thunders literally an hour before this album popped up for me to review. And let me tell you, the Only Ones ain't no Johnny Thunders. I don't hear creative greatness, and there ain't no glare. "Another Girl, Another Planet" is a classic song, but the rest of this album I found forgettable and generally enervating.
Easily forgotten.
Icepick-in-the-ear kind of singing on this album. Instrumentals were pretty good but oof that lead singer kills everything else, and not in a good way. 5/10
Decent at times but not notable
Awful. Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Adam Sandler mash up with an upbeat rhythm guitar & horns. Not a fan but I appreciate what they were trying to do.
Hmm ihan jees! Poppia, aika basic aikansa sellaista punk(ish)-vivahteella, mutta jäi turhan himmailemaan
Another Girl, Another Planet kolahti ensimmäistä kertaa, kiva. Verta hyytävä biisi muuten. Loput levyn sisällöstä on VÄHÄN liian löysää ja epävireistä. Mikä ei sekään haittaisi, jos kappaleet olisivat... parempia.
