Another album ruined by the singer. Takes herself too serious, German accent unbearable. The fact that it’s only on YouTube and I can’t read up on the backstory kills the last possibility to give it another chance. First album I stopped 10 minutes in because of my lack masochistic energy.

This album was almost fascinatingly bad, it really does sound like rejected songs that Lily von Schtupp was supposed to sing in Blazing Saddles, as another 1001 Albums Generator user pointed out. Maybe I just don't get it, but all I know is I listened to the first 10 minutes with what must've been a hell of a "What in god's name am I listening to?" look on my face before having to change it over to something else.

While listening to this album, I wish I wasn't. Truthfully it's not that bad, but a shocking pick for one of the 1001 best albums of all time.

I feel like I am watching a cold war era musical in the worst way possible. I am unsure of why this is the way it is.

Awkward English lyrics combined with borderline atonal music is not a pleasant listen, though it certainly stands out.

Mostly a waste of time and a waste of a spot on this list -- just too obscure, too theatrical and Brechtian or Zweigian (one's guessing here) to really suit this list. "The Perhaps Songs" is a plus title. At any rate, maybe some people need to hear this before they die (the composer's family most likely); one certainly does not. Listening just once, whilst still happily alive is more than enough.

Something about this album is putting me in a worse mood, and I don't know what it is. It's just uncomfortable. And I gave it two listens. I think this is the first album I'm giving a one and can't tell you why I hate it.

Unfortunately I am going to join the many haters of this album. Not that it is entirely bad or pointless, but that I don't enjoy it. I would much rather listen to classical German music which this is based on. I understand that genre is influential but is this album? Maybe to Ute Lemper Punishing Kiss, but I also don't like that album. Pretty sure Nick Cave and Tom Waits and others were making music like this before, so I just don't get it. I did go down an interesting rabbit hole of classical German from this though. I'm interested, but not in this. Sorry but some albums have to get a 1 to make the 2s count for something. At least you made the book.

This is not the kind of jazz that woke muisc heads (including myslef) will beg you to listen to and will tell you is "life-changing". That designation goes to the greats like Davis, Coltrane, Mingus, and others. This is the type that you imagine would play in a tourture chamber on repeat for someone that commited war crimes against humanity as punishment. 1/10

Don’t bother trying to locate this album. Listened to a few bits of the songs on YouTube. It's among the worst music I’ve ever heard.

Why??? I never heard about Dagmar Krause before and I would prefer remain in this ignorance. There are many much better singers of the genre... For example, the same year, Patricia Kaas issued her debute album "Mademoiselle chante...". Why isn´t she on the list? Or someone else?

Maybe I could rate this higher but how does a recording that is not available end up on a list of recordings I must listen to before I die? This "project" is nearly over for me I think...

I got no enjoyment out of this. All I could really get was the WW2 theme. Maybe if they were playing this in musical theater as part of a larger performance, but this with no context, songs ending abruptly, going from hard to understand English to another language, and it's too long. No thank you.

Ok, this is from left field, and that should be a good thing, but I have a limited tolerance for German theatre, even though I know it's an influence on guys like Zorn and Waits, whom I love. This however, can't get into the vocals, and have no mood to hear her plow through 26 very theatrical war time drama songs. three tunes was enough to render the verdict. I'm starting to think that the author of the 1001 albums book has taken his desire to be ecumenical to a sinful extreme

you know it's a bad album when you had enough after a couple of minutes... seems like most albums that aren't on spotify have one thing in common. they are all pretty bad. This is another one of those albums that sounds like some amateur scraped together money to make an album. Like an over acting aunt who think she is a misunderstood star of Broadway I really felt I get nothing more out of listening through the whole album. She got her point across pretty fast what the rest would sound like.

Some things don’t need to be remade or adapted to another language. This is one of them. It’s the same reason I watch subs instead of dubs

I can appreciate the artistry involved in making something like today’s album, but it doesn’t make it any more pleasing to the ears. Unfortunately, this didn’t do much for me today. It certainly sounded complex in parts, but I couldn’t get past it sounding bizarrely musical-theatre, and it ended up with me losing attention and placing it elsewhere. It is well written, in the same way that quantum mechanics can be expressed in nicer ways than others - it still doesn’t really make me want to read it though.

I've really tried to enjoy this album, but it has become grating for my ears. The versions of the songs aren't even decent, and I'm not a big fan of the songs to begin with. While I don't mind the style, the execution feels borderline kitschy for me. I listened to both the English and German versions, but it still didn't work. Overall, this album just isn't for me, and I’m glad I won't have to listen to it again.

I don't know what else I expected after choosing to listen to over an hour of German war folk.

Its not on streaming and its not good. Sure its "in the book" but perhaps we could burn that page and pretend it never happened.

Honestly, putting an album like this on a list of 1,000 albums you must hear, is it joke. I don't know what the author of the book was thinking when he put some of his picks in this book, but this is not it. It's not good, and it's not noteworthy. It's fine if you like it, but why should it be included on a list like this? I mean, hell, you can't even find it on streaming services. What does that tell you? It's forgotten for a reason. Good riddance.

damn this is some hot garbage jk i appreciate what it is but I'm definitely not understanding it fully, just not for me i think. I would prefer to hear the original compositions. I think because I enjoyed it much less than the only album I've given 2 stars so far, I gotta put it at 1 star. I definitely dont feel like this was an albim I needed to hear before I die. I’m sure that this type of music has its place among aficionados of the obscure. However, this obscure album probably never should have been included in the 1001 Albums book. I feel like I’ve just spent time in an East German prison.

Pros: I laughed out loud within 10 seconds. Cons: Once you get over giggling at how stupid this album is, you realise you've still got 58 minutes of this dreadful person singing legitimately insane songs.

Dramatic soundtrack-like music about economy, struggle, and nationality sung by a mediocre German lady. This is a weird one. It might be okay paired with movie scenes but as a standalone is not enjoyable. Ballade von der belebenden Wirkung des Geldes is pretty at least. Und Endlich Stibt is also pretty good. This album was a bit over an hour of the same thing over and over, dragging. I couldn't wait for it to end.

The album name and artist sounded promising but WOW was I in for a twist. This felt like a blind person at a really hokey German play (I hate theater, I would have rather been deaf). Parts of it sounded like bad polka, most of it was really annoying, I just wanted it to end. "Mother Beimleim" successfully freaked me out, it was like the witch from Hansel & Gretel got drunk. I also hated the one where she sang about "Too Much Coffee" and "Sackslingers." Nothing redeemed this, I don't know why it's on the list. Please don't even explain it to me, sling this sack right off a bridge. 0.60

Another odd one from the list. Sounds like a German stage play from post WWI and the rise of Hitler. Not something I would ever intentionally seek out so I thank the list for providing me the obscurity. I will not be playing this again or delving further into other works however...0.78.

What did I just listen to? I thought this might be a joke or an incorrect posting on YouTube when I first turned Tank Battles on. Nope. It was in fact nearly an hour of a German woman singing/speaking translated lullabies or fight songs or tall tales from post-war battles or something? There were occasional chuckles at some of the ridiculousness of the whole thing but overall this was rough to get through. I feel I had no reason I had to hear this before I died but maybe there is some other external reason the editors felt this belonged on the list. 1.03 stars

Reminds me of the Ute Lemper record this site also recommended. A lot weirder/more dramatic. This feels like the soundtrack to a really underground off broadway musical. Super theatrical but really odd arrangements and tones. Not bad but I'd never choose to listen to it.

This is so far outside my wheelhouse I don't know where to start. I gave it a chance, but it does nothing for me. Good for you if you enjoy it, I just can't fathom how it made the list

This was weird and not in a way I enjoyed.

Another one that can't be found on Spotify. The cover gave me a bit of Ute Lemper vibes, so was a bit sceptical coming in. This hit all the wrong spots for me unfortunately. A german composer (Hanns Eisler) writing an album about tank battles in the late 80s, it just feels so... dated and prehistoric? Granted, it was during the cold war, but still... felt like something that may have been fresh during the 30s, but late 80s? Come on. Not my thing at all, stopped half-way through.

This sounded like something from a musical. A disjointed collections of songs that were like off-brand Sondheim, Cabaret or the three penny opera. Maybe I would have like it more if there was some sort of red thread running through but it really just felt like a disjointed mess. The singer is clearly talented and the orchestra too but I just found it annoying. I was thinking it wasn't to bad after I thought I finished only to come to the dreaded realisation that there was another half to go. That amount off disinterest of having to listen more to it firmly places it in the one star category,

Take Cabaret but make it oppressing as fuck. 1* Sometimes you wish you could time travel to see what life was like (in this case to 1920s Germany), but this wasn't it. Did I need to listen to it before dying? No, but it is definitely unique.

This was hard to track down, and when I did I am not even sure it was the right album or playlist. Also, this was bonkers. I'll almost consider it a day off from the list. No idea why it's there to begin with.

In my mind there would be long costume changes where her microphone was left on and you could hear her cussing and doing herself up. Works better as an A Level history assignment than an album.

80s German music hall is a narrow genre but in the spirit of generator listening I was happy to explore it for the first time. In for a penny, in for a Deutsche Mark. Not on Spotify so I went hunting and found every track on YouTube. It was an interesting listening experience. YouTube adverts between tracks would usually be annoying but here they were light relief and the most enjoyable aspect of the overall listening experience. Thankfully some of the songs were shorter than the ads! 1001 is an odd number for the books and the generator. If they choose to round down this is a strong contender for exclusion :)

I’ve never liked musicals.. and this feels like musical music. Almost sounds like a parallel universe where Lady Gaga travelled backward in time, lost her vocal skills, and became German - which if you hadn’t guessed, doesn’t sound great. I also highly recommend looking for the 1001 albums related comments below the youtube upload - well worth the read 😆

There are any number of musical cast recordings to which I would rather be listening, The Threepenny Opera for example. One seedy jazz hand.

What the actual fuck is this shit? This has to be the single worst album inclusion on any iteration of this list, I cannot believe that anyone could consider this to be “essential”. This record is indulgent, cloying, self-satisfied, frivolous, ENDLESS, and utterly impenetrable. With all the wacky instruments employed on this album, would it have killed her to at least hire a drummer? Looking at this site’s lowest rated albums, I’ve long since laughed off those who can’t get into albums by Lightning Bolt, Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubauten, etc. but THIS really should be the lowest rated album. When Frank Zappa was singing about “Dagmar, without a doubt the ugliest son of a bitch I’ve ever seen in my life” in his song “Broken Hearts Are For Assholes”, I have to wonder if he was referring to the music of Dagmar Krause. Fuck this.

In a nutshell: melodramatic Avant-garde albums are not my thing. I don't mind cabaret. This felt like a loose concept album, one that would have worked much better on stage, not in a studio. It wouldn't surprise me if Björk and Dresden Dolls were inspired by Krause. Overall: 2/10

Blah. Sorry - Dagmar seems to be a real talent, but I can't get into this.

I'm not really sure if I have listened to the right album, but somehow Dagmar Krause and Hanns Eisler made me hate tanks. The music feels very experimental and innovative, but it went completely off the scale. Dagmar sings okayish, but that doesn't even matter, when the songs are incomprehensible for most of the time. I don't know what is this album doing on the list honestly. Waste of time.

Here it is…. My first 0/5! Really didn’t enjoy listening to this, so that’s a 1/5. Adding in the -1 for not being on Spotify, that’s a 0/5 folks. That being said, it was a unique album. The fact that it was recorded in English and in German by the singer is wild. It’s just so far removed from my style of music that I could barely stand it.

This is a big moment for me. I've had a handful of one-star albums across this journey, even some that I'd give a 1 out of 10. But not until today have I heard an album on this list without even one redeeming track, not a single song worth saving. This one's not on Apple Music anyway, and I will NOT be going out of my way to download any of this. What the hell are we doing here??? This is an album from the '80s, a German singer doing showtune renditions of old German war-time folk songs. That description reads like the worst idea for an album Tom Waits could ever have. Yeah of course, I recognize the talent and effort that goes into this and its value as a preservation of old music. But good lord, this is a nightmare to me. Listed as "cabaret" on wikipedia, remind me to avoid that genre tag like the plague. Just a culmination of things that I can't stand here. I'm all for variety on this list, and just this week we got another German album with Kollaps, but that was a lot less painful than this. Get this out of my face and out of my ears. Favorite tracks: Album art: Kind of a cool design, just Ms. Krause's face obscured by shadow, the framing and splashes of red are nice. 0.5/5

Dagmar has a very unique voice, and the instrumental orchestration was quite good in many spots...but I have no idea why this is on this list. I'm not anti-composer music either, but this doesn't strike me as an album that I must hear before I die. I was just assigned a Bjork album the other day (Vulnicura), and this is not as bad as that, but it's not far behind for me. Only one favorite track because there was some great guitar work on it: The Song of the Invigorating Impact of Cash.

This was terrible. I couldn't figure out the point the entire time I was listening. I didn't like the music, I didn't particularly care for her voice, and I thought the translations seemed to be clunky. I even tried a few of the songs in German to see if they were better, and I didn't think they were. Just not for me at any level.

Half a star for the diversity it represents. Another half a star because it's aptly named. It's the best I can do.

You know what you are getting right form the start - performance art, not music. It's aimed at a certain type of person to nod along knowingly and point out the strands of the metaphors, how the music brings out the timbre of the artists mood. That sort of rubbish. Basically it's for people that hate it to pretend they love it to other people who also hate it and are pretending they love it so they all seem "cultured" and smart in loving something they know everyone hates. Well done.

I found this one a hard listen mostly because I just couldn't follow the logic of it and also listening through Youtube is annoying AF. It felt very 'out-there' in terms of mixed styles and instruments - which isn't necessarily a bad thing? Kind of show tunes mixed with jazz and orchestral and operatic singing - lots of emotion - and a bit painful (both in terms of the subject matter and in making my ears bleed) I get the point of it - but to me its more art performance than music and Das ist nicht mein Fall.

Completely unnecessary

Spotify only lists two albums by Dagmar Krause, and this album isn't one of them. Wikipedia lists the genre as cabaret, jazz, avant-garde, so I doubt if I would I have liked this album anyway.

What the actual hell. It took forever to track this one down and, once I did, it became clear why it's not available anywhere. It's TERRIBLE. I wouldn't want this out in the world either! What the hell would possess the author to include this in the list?!

What the fuck is this

Quite simply, this is an extremely unpleasant album that proves that bizarre is not always noteworthy.

Sunday Funday this is not. Listening to this album is on par with being forced to spend a long weekend with white people grandparents and their butler on the upper west side, with a 'special outing' to see Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg opera. Get me outta here...

So bad it needs a replacement. Keeping it Kraussy, substitute Allison Krauss and Union Station. Weird German stuff is over represented, while bluegrass is underrepresented. In the 90s and early 00s, no one did it better than Alison Krauss and Union Station.

It doesn’t seem like this album can be worse than Napalm Death’s Scum from yesterday, but I liked more of ND than this. I hated ND’s bad parts much more, but this album has far less to like than ND’s killer guitar riffs. Therefore, this album dwells in the cellar with ND.

As musical I would listen for enjoyment...straight 1/5 and absolutely terrible. As a historic artifact that offers an interesting view into the mindset of a Soviet republic I found it fascinating.

This is weird as fuck. Its not on anything, as in you can't stream it from apple music or Spotify, there's even a disclaimer saying so, I found I think all of it on YouTube. It's mostly in German but its like soilder marching tunes and then slightly off lounge jazz then some women deep throating the mice its all a bit much for 6am

Got given this album in 2023, listening to it 2nd Jan 2025. This may be a lesson that you can avoid things but the worst will still come cause this was terrible. The woman has an orchestral voice but I think just applied in one of the worst possible ways. So much more potential that hasn't been reached here, the instrumental backing is unremarkable I think and doesn't accompany the voice too well. 1.5

This is the worst thing I've ever heard. I would rather take 1001 fiery shits back to back than relive those 12 seconds of my life that I had this album playing through the speakers.

A sort of German folk opera about war, sung mostly in English. The tension between the English words and the Germanic music and vocal accent somehow grates and sounds unpleasant. This may have been a deliberate artistic decision to create an uncomfortable listening experience to reflect the horrors of the subject matter. Mercifully, it wasn't long. Because I really didn't like this. Fake opera is what I would call it and I don't like real opera. I didn't need to hear this and I hope I never hear this again.

It's no secret that this album is fucking impossible to find anywhere. It's not even simply unavailable like other albums ("Ys" by Joanna Newsom or Neil Young's entire catalogue), there's literally no proof of this album's existence on any streaming service. How does that even happen? Sure as hell wouldn't happen if this were actually good. I sure listened to something. Found a weird Youtube playlist that was missing 14 of the 26 songs. Eh, I guess it was enough to form an opinion. Strange German circus music about war being bad. Truly a thinking man's album. There's some picks on this list that can only be explained by my theory that Robert Dimery consults a Magic 8-Ball. This is one of them. I can't even wrap my head around how this would be on anyone's "most essential albums of all time" list. 1/5 for shitty music and 1/5 for ruining my Spotify playlist where I put the best song from every album on this list. It sounds like it should be the soundtrack to an accordion-oriented play. It isn't particularly challenging sonically (single voice over an orchestral arrangement), it just isn't something that is particularly fun or enjoyable to listen to. Quite tiring.

Found a (likely incomplete) playlist on YouTube. Given what I heard, I don't think I need to hear the rest. I think I get what she was going for, but it's not my thing.

Just completely baffling. Not sure exactly why it's on this list at all; it's not really all that groundbreaking or well performed. I can't speak a second language, let along sing one, but her strong German accent was so distracting that I had a hard time even understanding what she was singing. I really don't want to give it 1 star as it's not nearly as bad as some albums on this list (I'm 1,053 in so far...there's more than 1,001 FYI), but I've given much better albums 2 stars, so I have no choice. 1.5/5
