Reviews (page 7 of 13)
I will never like this album as much as seemingly everyone my age does. And that's okay. I never have understood why I don't seem to like Frank Ocean as much as everyone else. I mean... talk about iconic stuff. Hits packed with hits. Every song on this album is a soundtrack song for nearly everyone in my life, especially around college. And I appreciate the "album"-ness of it. It feels cohesive, directed, Frank's singing is iconic. Beyond that... yeah? I just don't find myself coming back to it. Nothing against the record at all, it's just not something I connect with. And it's not over-the-line enough for me to be stunned, track to track, like a good kid m.A.A.d city, which came out right around the same time and for whatever reason I unfairly compare against. Were my standards way too high for this era? I lived through it. This was a special time for music, and everywhere you looked there was a brilliant concept. At least, that's how it felt. This one feels like we're getting a taste of that, but it's maybe too sleepy for me. I dunno. Maybe I'm just standing outside the coronation, feeling a little disoriented or sour for no good reason. Still, great. 4/5
It has been [5] years since the last Frank Ocean album. On April 26th 2012, Frank Ocean tweeted "5 albums before 30". To date, he has released [3] albums and a mixtape. He is currently [35]. This is how Frank Ocean fans tend to talk about him, and for good reason. Ocean creates some of the most captivating R&B over the 2010's. Every song explores a new dimension of sound without feeling too disjointed or removed from R&B roots. The greatest aspect of Ocean's songwriting is, by far, his lyricism. While he certainly has a great ear for production and instrumentals, his lyrics reveal how much a wordsmith he truly is. Ocean is distinctly in touch with his feelings and the people around him, making for damn good songs. Combined with how the songs are structured, Channel Orange is an album that made a man into a legend.
Real good
Groovy and different, at once smooth and likably woozy. One digs deeply the interesting vibes and space-age feels of deconstructed R&B. "Crack Rock" and "Pyramids" and "Lost" are particularly good/dope. The vocals are terrific throughout – FO's got a great voice, straight up. One isn't exactly swept away by the narrative, likely because seems pretty far outside the target audience. Still, high quality is consistent, though one's not fully convinced that the synths and SFX will age all that well. A bit more conventional flow woulda added muchly in countering the willful obliqueness.
Yoooo det jo Frank :))
I really enjoyed the album. Chill and good vibes
Although not every single songs hits 100% for me, I still definitely love this album with my whole heart. Another one from my high school years that I remember bumping while driving around with my pals. Very fond memories of this and will consistently come back to Frank forever. 8/10
When I first read Frank Ocean this morning, my old ass associated it with Billy Ocean, the 80's pop singer. Once I realized that's not who it was, I realized I've never heard of Frank Ocean before. From my research, I learned that Pharell Williams helped produce this album, and there is a song on here that features Andre 3000. I'm a big fan of Pharell, and Outkast! Pharell has quite an ear for new music, so I figured this would be a good listen today. Frank Ocean is an R&B/hip hop/pop singer. The first few songs didn't really captivate me. They were heavier to the R&B side of the spectrum, and I am not a fan of "modern" R&B, so I didn't know what to think. But once the song Sweet Life came on, it was all uphill from there! Frank's sound reminds me of a cross between Childish Gambino, John Legend, and The Weeknd. It is obvious that Frank isn't one of these fly by night artists that are so commonplace these days. Frank has a good ear for what music should be, and is a real talent for sure!! The only downfall of this album is the fact that hip hop/R&B artists are obsessed with putting skits on their records. They do nothing except distract from the flow of the record. They are annoying as fuck. Overall, however, this was a phenomenal album! I was pleasantly surprised, and will 100% listen again. I actually listened to it twice today! Favorite songs: Pyramids, Super Rich Kids, Crack Rock, Sweet Life, Pilot Jones, Lost Least favorite songs: all of the stupid fucking skits (Start, Fertilizer, Not Just Money, End), Thinkin Bout You, Sierra Leone 4/5
Best lyric: “You don’t know how little you matter until you’re all alone". Loved Pyramid. My favorite was probably Bad Religion. I remember the first time I listened to this, I didn't understand the hype. I think its a good album but I don't really get the "one of the best albums ever created" thing.
This was pretty darn good. Not my normal thing to listen to but really enjoyed it. I only knew Super Rich Kids but it's a banger
One of my favorite Frank Ocean albums!’
Absolutely stellar album
4.0
Really good modern R&B/rap. My favorite songs are the ones with great lyrics, like ‘Super Rich Kids’ and ‘Crack Rock’.
Pleasant to listen to and suggesting great depths.
Good stuff.
Loved it. Whole album was great. Great for active listening or having on in the background. Frank Ocean is so talented.
A really good album with some instant classics. I'm a blond guy though.
I'm a little conflicted about the 4 stars but I also continue to be intrigued by this album after the first couple of listens and want to give it more time. In other words, only time will tell if I was too generous. I know it's not a five star record for me all things considered.
OFWGTTA
Some nice Frank Ocean. This and Blonde are both solid albums
I’ve never been fully able to understand the breathless acclaim this album and frank ocean in general got. People lost their minds over this and I think in a way it does it a disservice because it’s almost impossible to live up to that kind of hype. His voice is gorgeous and the production is unique and impeccable but a lot of the songs themselves miss the mark for me. This is a great album but falls just short of a 5. Wish I could’ve heard it before I heard about it.
I can't believe this record came out so long ago now, almost 11 years. It still sounds just as much like it's from the future as it did when it came out. Just a boundary pushing record.
I have been a fan of FO since Nostalgia, Ultra. I had not listen to this album in a long while. While not his best songwriting, it still brought so many memories. The music itself is just as good as I remember. The instrumentation is spectacular, specially Pyramids.
mmmmm yeah tasty
Way better than I expected. REALLY needs to be listened to on a decent sound system with proper subs though.
Album reminded me of college - "Thinkin Bout You" was great and thought the whole album was great too. 8/10.
Admittedly have never been too big of a fan of Frank Ocean but this album grows on me every time I listen
Masterfull, for the biggest part
At the first tones I really though I would dislike this album. But I kept listening, putting the album on for a second time, a third. And it really kept growing. Some great lyrics, some outstanding song, but also some filler. I can understand why this became a big album and artist - and not just sales wise.
Ocean is funny soulful and a skilled rapper. I can’t believe I haven’t heard of him before.
Smooooooooooove. Fave track - "Super Rich Kids". That tune is a mooooood.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Thinkin Bout You (2) 2 - Lost (11) 3 - Pyramids (10) Super Rich Kids (7)
Ok didn't think I was gonna like this but its pretty fly as they say. I feel that is Marvin Gaye was reborn he would make an album like this. Inventive soul/funk with different turns for every track. Like it a lot and and its not a genre I really listen to. 4
If Frank Ocean never makes another album again, at least I will always have Channel Orange and Blond, and all the memories associated with them. 4.5/5
Frank Ocean is one of those players who changed the game of pop music, paving the direction mainstream artists like Drake and Post Malone will take. But they're missing what makes this album so special. Channel Orange follows from 2000s neo-soul but is uniquely characterized by electronic ambience with the use of jazz, funk, and psychedelia to create mild yet memorable and relaxing landscapes. When I first heard Frank Ocean, I shrugged him off as another pop artist who was just showing off his Prince-like vocals. The tight groovy instrumentation and unique production techniques were what initially pulled me in. But it was "Sweet Life" that showed me what his voice was capable of, incredibly smooth and dynamic, and his falsetto isn't just a gimmick. The album really does fly by. People might be pushed away due to the oversaturation of "Lost" and "Thinkin About You", but coming in with a fresh mindset made me see how each song is special. I was a huge fan of every song up until "Lost", with my favorite being the epic "Pyraminds." After that it started to get a bit tiresome, but the last 3 songs are good. I'm also a fan of the interludes, highlighting production tricks that add to the mood and tie the whole experience together.
Fantastic. I didn’t make a listening log of this one because I wanted to experience it without making notes
This album is so refreshing and a great piece of music. It's hip-hop, but also, it's something more that it's impossible to explain.
Pretty nice album! Quite enjoy the overall vibe and sounds, the inclusion of John Mayer is also quite nice
Wasn't a giant fan of this album when it came out...so I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it listening this time through. I think I am starting to understand/appreciate the hype. 4/5
Frank has a genuine angelic voice Pyramids is best track Brilliant songs THE ORANHE ALBUM
still like singles the best
Has the feel of a modern classic. You listen to it once and you're full. Best track: Pink Matter
As far as R&B and hip-hop goes this is right up my alley, and it's strange that I couldn’t get into it when it first came out. This is a natural evolution of ‘90s and ‘00s R&B, it sounds like a classic and a fresh record at the same time. The melodies are smooth, and Frank Ocean carries the music well with his emotion. Standout tracks are Super Rich Kids, Thinkin Bout You, and Lost. Only downside? Those transition tracks and some of those song introductions. Except for that PS1 start-up sound which gave me some delicious nostalgia, they added nothing to the album.
I had already heard a few songs before, but not the whole album. Pretty chill and easy to listen to. I think 5 is probably a bit too generous so 4 it is. Something I could come back to and cherry pick the songs I liked the most.
Frank Ocean.
I've heard people talk about this album constantly since it came out, but somehow never got around to a real listen...except I realized when listening how many songs I knew thru the aether came from this album. Killer 'modern' R&B and a standout album of the decade. 4.5
To say this isn't my genre is an understatement. So I approached this with some trepidation which was completely unfounded. This is a good album. It's never going to be my thing but it's melodic, interesting, has some good songs and doesn't default to the lazy end of the genre.
Great album with flawless productions and really tasteful vocals too. PS: Pyramids is definitely one of the best songs of the 2000s.
This falls under the admire more than love category. Some of that is genre related and some is age-related. I cannot relate to a lot of this in many ways. However, there is no question that Frank Ocean is a tremendous talent and for me, along with Kendrick Lamar, represent the best that I have heard of this genre. There is a boldness at work throughout his debut release, as compared with merely being boastful (a common complaint of mine). Solid throughout with no real weak tracks. I suspect that this has staying power and will be considered a classic down the road.
I liked this more than I had expected to. Very good album.
A good eclectic album
This is a groovy record with mostly singing and little rapping. Easy to get into, worth a listen.
Although it presents itself with a good mix and a set of lyrics that should hit clear and arouse excitement at the same time I feel like its trying to relay a message that I unfortunately do not understand, which is a shame, as music is to share that message, maybe. Definitely a 4 though, I had fun listening to it.
Already have listened to this album a billion times. Got me into actually listening to music and dissecting it. All around good album. Production and Frank's performance is amazing. Affects me all the time.
This is a very good album. It's also an album that I find difficult to contextualize. I don't know what to compare it to, which may reveal more about my ignorance of R&B than it does about Frank Ocean. I don't usually go in for the R&B genre, but this album is endeniable. Great production, compelling songwriting and lyrics, and Ocean's beautiful voice to bring it all home 4/5
4/5. I had heard this before as a longtime fan of Odd Future. Personally I prefer blond but I can easily listen to this. Favorite track is Pyramids, as popular as it is.
really enjoyed this!
2012 Hottest 100, I thought Lost would be number one. It was beaten out by Thrift Shop (and 6 other songs). What a year?!? Dear Science by Seth Sentry was robbed too. That hoverboard line... If we could just edit out all the interludes this would be a cracking album.
Succeeds at being both chilled out and, at times, heartbreaking. Nothing bad to say about it.
listened to before an R&B classic
rimelig svedigt
Channel pogange
Please… drop a new album…
Very interest album. Does a lot of unique and found myself saving a lot of songs. No individual songs really jump out as greats upon the first listen, so curious what I’ll go back too
Really good mix of styles. Excellent production.
The opening listen is quite alarming as you fear this project will just be babble over a sub par neo Soul soundtrack and yet as the album progresses the appeal of Ocean is that stream of consciousness approach and an insight (or an authentic sounding facsimile) into a man’s inner musings. There are few standout tracks but as a music project it intrigues throughout and consistently engages as you try to understand what the author is about and what he is saying. Perhaps some will feel this is self obsessed but in many ways it is the perfect record for the social media generation.
Very smooth
Excellent
Ne mos pogrijesit s ovim albumom
A to je Frank. Jebiga, kvalitetno je.
8/10 Pyramids, damn
Very smooth and even in Super Rich Kids has a nod to Bennie and The Jets that I praised a few reviews ago. I'm 10 years behind, but this Ocean guy has a glowing future!!
i love his vibe and i love his songs. lost is unbeatable. a strong 7/10. i wasn’t a huge fan of the intertwined talking but i did love the album.
several really good songs with the random bleh mixed in 4.5
En jävligt stark fyra
Easy listening
It’s a cool album but I didn’t feel it leaving a lingering impact
i’d heard a bunch of the songs before, but this was my first time listening to the album as a whole. despite some awkwardness, this is brilliant and you can see how it influenced hip hop in the 2010s so well.
Really enjoyable modern r and b album by frank ocean. The beats and synths are unique. The lyrics are pretty good showing relationship issues and that of being a younger person. Several of the songs on this are great and some will be classics. This album really put him on the map as an artist that makes special music. 7.9/10
sweet
Smoother and more multi-layered than I would ever have expected.
I'm not sure if I'll come back to it, but I super enjoyed it while listening! The album had great flow and good variety
Delves into a rank genre of nonchalance, very smooth and easy to listen to. Well produced
Soul progresivo. Un 4.
I was surprised to like this. Again, hip hop is a blind spot and listening closely has been somewhat of a cultural awareness experience for a middle aged guy with relatively narrow social exposure.
Frank Ocean has the voice of an angel and he’s great at writing one-liners. There’s a lot of different sounds and styles on this album (funk, soul, hip-hop, electronic) and it can almost be too much - it’s overwhelming to listen to straight through. But it’s ambitious and the highlights are incredible. Highlights: “Thinkin Bout You,” “Sweet Life,” Earl Sweatshirt’s verse on “Super Rich Kids,” “Lost,” “Bad Religion”
I’m not a big R&B aficionado so I wasn’t sure how almost an hour long album might be. I put this on and was really surprised at the variety Frank Ocean incorporates into his grooves. Some really unusual drum parts, interesting orchestral backgrounds, psychedelic sounds and other interesting musical constructions and styles throughout. This kept my interest level high. The lyrics are interesting, often seeming almost conversational, and often dealing with some of the darker topics of life. This was all a lot more appealing than I had expected.
As brilliant as what Kanye and his fans think Kanye is.
This is a great example of an album that is meant to be listened as a whole and not just individual tracks.
When this album was first announced almost ten years ago, I took notice but a very, very long time to listen. The open letter, I'm ashamed to admit, drove me away. I wasn't prepared to face the fact that there were changes in the way musicians openly detailed relationships with the same sex and that it would inevitably, eventually, change the way we view ourselves. Channel Orange is the nucleus of which the way music (and Frank Ocean) is viewed upon as a beyond comprehensible experience. It's near hour odyssey is worthy of being considered the abundance of accolades it's been given. An essential listen. Favorites: Thinkin Bout You, Sierra Leone, Sweet Life, Super Rich Kids, Pilot Jones, Crack Rock, Pyramids, Bad Religion, Forrest Gump.
One of the best from the 2010s
Liked this more than I expected. Bonus points for the PlayStation noise in the intro!
Listened to Ocean off and on. Strong album, with some great tracks. Not my usual style/genre
His voice is beautiful but it just doesn't quite do it for me like it does for others.
Slick, soulful rnb. I can appreciate how every element is polished and well done, but still not really my thing.
Soul progresivo. Un 4.
Chill vibes
Modern classic

I like frank. voice is smooth
Enjoyed it.
4.5
Started out indifferent, but as the guest musicians joined I found it much more enjoyable
liked this a lot
Fortfarande, pyramids. ryser
Would be 5 if it wasn’t so long.
Again not my usual genre but it's pretty great. Some fine hooks.
Somehow I had never sat and listened to this album. Really stands out from most R&B for me.
Not as annoying as traditional R&B. Nice work Frank!
I rarely seek out or choose R&B, though I don't really know why. R&B can be so smooth, so filled with groove, and Frank Ocean is certainly no exception. I don't listen to enough R&B to understand what makes Frank Ocean stand out and deserve the accolades he has earned over the last decade. And this is my first exposure to his music, despite having been aware of his impact. But regardless, I really enjoyed this, and maybe should seek out Frank Ocean and other similar R&B more often.
I might need to listen to this album a few more times before I can figure out how I really feel about it. My first impression is that the back half (from Pyramid on) is really in the groove but now I need to go back and listen to the first half. The fact that I WANT to listen to this album a few more times to figure out how I feel about it speaks volumes when compared to so many other albums on this list.
Frank Ocean has a unique style that’s for sure. The consensus seems to be that there is no consensus to describe him. I’d go with lounge-y, amorphous hip hop. It’s no surprise that Pyramids is my favorite track as it is upbeat with electronic elements. Overall, the vibe is a tad too laid back for me. I’d like more of the Pyramids energy. However in the end, this is better than The Bends.
CO is one of the best 2010s R&B records. I don’t come back to this one as often as I do Nostalgia Ultra or Blonde but it still has some solid tracks. This rating definitely gets a boost for how much I used to listen to this record.
I hear a lot of Gambino in Frank Ocean. Anyone who can do some genre bending and mix soulful lyrics with some silky smooth flow gets a pass from me. It gets some dings for being too long, and sounding a bit “more of the same” after the first half hour or so, but I had a great time listening to this. Super rich kids and crack rock are my faves.
Why are all these RnB albums so long? Well, there's a clear reason: Songs in the Key of Life. But why that album? Well, it's really good. Yet a further question: why draw from the same well constantly? Now that I have a harder time explaining. Admittedly, RnB has never really been my jam. I really don't feel myself prudish, but I have never considered that that what soul music needed was a dosage of crassness. Now, I recognise that as just a lazy prejudice, so I welcomed the opportunity to have my options guided by this challenge. Frank Ocean has been the best so far, but I still have a few qualms. Firstly, why the length? Remember the mantra: long and thin goes too far in; short and thick does the trick. Sweet Life and Super Rich Kids are essentially the same song, so why have both? Theere's no bad track, but the length diminishes more than it expands. Secondly, some of the lyrical conceits don't quite land. The centrepiece, Pyramids, has Cleopatra journeying to the present and becoming a stripper. I am struggling to grasp the point being made. Or take Forrest Gump, and wonder at how it casts Forrest Gump as well fuckable. One wishes for a shade more quality control. Do not misunderstand me, this is a good album (whereas Ceelo Green... Is The Soul Machine is diminishing with each new album). But the listener need not fret that much if they decide to skip it.
blonde better
Good! I liked it, I'm not the biggest R&B fan so it's not the kind of music I would choose to listen to if I had nothing else, but it's cool how Franko uses different mediums of sound on the album
Monks has a great bass line Lost is the catchiest shit ever
I love Frank Ocean, really good album.
Added. Good album but not consistent. Worth another listen or two.
pretty nice actually
Crazy debut album. Jams all the way through.
Rating: 7/10 Did not expect a PS1 intro sound on the first song. Strong beginning! I remember "Thinkin Bout You" being played constantly on the radio, overexposed me to it, so I might rate it lower based on that. "Fertilizer" is a great bridge-song. Really digging "Sweet Life", a super funky/groovy song. The bass lifts the entire song. Also really liked "Super Rich Kids". I'm a sucker for long songs, so "Pyramids" is totally my jam. That guitar at the end, and that keychange in the middle of the song. So good.
Great album, great vocals, catchy music
It’s a chill r&b album
Just pressed play. Don't know anything about this record. Not sure I've heard anything on it. I generally like hip-hop/rap when it feels chill. So, I dig this. He's got a great voice. That falsetto is really great. I love it. The production sounds like there is a blanket over the speakers (see the snare sound in "Sierra Leone") and I really like that. Feels like a warm summer night.
I remember everyone getting very excited by this at the time of release. I like it, the voice is great the production is great. That said, I still don't quite "get it" - the thing that elevates it from good to great.
First time listening to Frank Ocean. He’s been very famous for very long and every time I hear his name I think of it as a sign I’m getting more out of touch. This album seemed very post modern, pulling from a lot of places, video game, TV, radio interludes. Early on in the album is felt too soft, too Pop R&B and i wasn’t feeling it—the sentiments and vibes of modern R&B doesn’t speak to me. Then I’m the middle of the album he has a run of great songs: Rich Kids, Pilot Jones, Crack Rock and Pyramids is a run of fives. Pleasantly surprised, there’s a lot of depth there, but overall a bit long and everything wasn’t a banger.
Hadn't really listened to Frank Ocean before, I enjoyed this album. Delivered far above my expectations. There was subtly and nuance here that was entirely unexpected. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it is derivative.
Heard of Ocean before this but didn't know his stuff. R&B singing isn't my favorite, but he's talented. More interesting were the beats, synths, and layers. Interesting listen.
Might feel a little different about this if it wasn't for the nostalgia surrounding it - it's a little bloated - but the hits HIT. Pyramids is still insane, plus you haven't lived until you've played die outside on a nice spring day with Lost drifting from the speaker. I could cry Already Saved: Thinkin Bout You; Super Rich Kids; Pyramids; Lost Saved After Listening: Sweet Life, Pink Matter*
Very good modern R&B, but I don't hear the "absolute classic" in it that a lot of online reviewers seem to. Well worth a listen, but it's not a new favorite of mine or anything like it.
Im using 1001albumsgenerator, which gives you an album a day to listen to. I'm kind of on a hiphop streak so I thought i'd use the hiphop only option. Frank is one artist who I've barely listened to but got the hype. I thought Blonde was decent, and as I am liking it more, I still didn't really go beyond there. I wasn't hyped for this album, really. I just thought it would be a more earlier blonde, but seeing features like Earl or André, and production from Tyler kind of put my hopes up. And this hiphop + Alternative R&B does not dissappoint. I really do just adore Frank's singing in this record. Sweet Life, Thinking Bout You, & Monks are all great. In my opinion, I feel like these are more accesible songs and I think the the themes Frank pushes using them are more likeable. "Bad Religion" is very interesting to me, with its themes of unrequited love as a cult. Getting a spur of the moment therapy session from his muslim taxi cab driver. The specifics and just scenario of this song is great. And by god, "Pyramids" is one of the most recent songs to just, surprise me. Instant 10/10. Its first, almost lucid production blew my mind, and Frank'a vocals over this 2 part, 10 minute song is amazing. "Pink Matter" with 3 stacks is just beautiful too. Tackling more themes of love, and how "pink matter" is the substance that makes up our love & affection in our brains is great. The bass really compliments André's smooth raps. All I'm saying is that this is a great R&B album. I kept getting more surprised by each song. 8/10 (As of July 7th, 2021) Best Tracks: Start, Thinkin Bout You, Sweet Life, Super Rich Kids, Pyramids, Lost, Monks, Bad Religion, Pink Matter, Forest Gump, End Worst Track: None
ta golfo ahora a teñirse el pelo
Chill, relaxed hip hop.
Fun. Groovy. Had some cool moments. Talented vocalist.
Smooth than mfer
Surprisingly good, very soulful.
Pretty relaxing, just some weird beats occasionally
👌🏽
AAAA MOTHERFUCKING FRANKIE OCEAN
Frankie mega fajny
Cool album!
Surprised by this. Not typically something I would listen to but so liked it
Already heard, really like this album. Favourite tracks include Crack Rock, Sweet Life, Pyramids and Super Rich Kids. Probably an 8/10
I have to stop thinking of this guy as the love child of Frank Black and Billy Ocean. He's not. And his music is nothing like those guys. This is a surprisingly good album. I don't know why I was reluctant to believe the hype.
Missed this album on Monday, and I know I love it.
I really tried to like this album. I've listened to it a couple times, and most of the time I just find everything about it so boring. Some of the tracks are so iconic and holds a special place in my heart, but other than the nostalgia I just really don't think it's that good of an album. Great lyrics and some good messages but they are almost always accompanied by repetetive beats and at times horrible vocals. It's definitely worth a listen though. Ok it has to be a 4 I just haven't listened enough:))
1. Start- intro track, very short. Loving the Playstation start up sound- very nostalgic. 2. Thinkin Bout You- the Frank Ocean song I am already the most familiar with. This is a nice slow jam that really shows off his voice. I love the lyrics in the chorus- "Do you not think so far ahead cause I've been thinking bout forever". These do such a good job at summing up unrequited love or just a personality that is constantly thinking about how things could be and how frustrating it can be to be with someone or pine for someone that doesn't think like that. 3. Fertilizer- another interlude. It sounds like a jingle for a commercial. Not much else to say! 4. Sierra Leone- Interesting lyrics about an accidental pregnancy? Some really pretty string instrumentation in the background and of course his voice sounds great. I do think I'll need more time with this song but I don't hate it. 5. Sweet Life- Obviously about wealth and privilege- "Why see the world when you got the beach?" kind of sums it up! I like the chorus of this song a lot. Interesting that "sweet life" kind of subtly sounds like "sweet lie". Obviously satirical and critical of this kind of lifestyle and how it's not all it's chalked up to be. I like Pharrell's production on this a lot. 6. Not Just Money- yet another interlude with a voiceover this time. Good commentary on how money actually can buy happiness and stability. 7. Super Rich Kids- love this one. Starts out kind of like "Bennie and the Jets". I love the blinker sound in the background- ties into the previous interlude. Wealth seems a little darker but still fun in this song. Basically these kids can do whatever they want but they're lacking love and care in their lives. 8. Pilot Jones- About getting high for sure. Appreciate it but it's not my fav track on the album right now. I definitely like the simplicity and airiness of it. 9. Crack Rock- Definitely a song about drugs, but not in a positive light. Also a little bit about police brutality. Not my favorite on the album sonically but the lyrics are very important. 10. Pyramids- This is a LONG song. I like the electronic sounds in this song. I love this song. Even though it's long, it's captivating the whole way through. I can vibe to this all day. Nice guitar from John Mayer at the end, too. 11. Lost- love everything about this song. One of the poppier, catchier songs on the album for sure. I get this stuck in my head a lot. So smooth. 12. White- All instrumental but I like it. It's soft and jazzy. 13. Monks- I think this song is about a groupie. It's going to take a little bit more time to grow on me. 14. Bad Religion- Ooh this one is a bit more dramatic- his voice sounds great here. I love the lyric "If it brings me to my knees it's a bad religion". That sentence is worth a thousand words! I also love that you could interpret this song to be about literal religion or about unrequited devotion to a person. 15. Pink Matter- Definitely a slow jam. I love the guitar in the background- very subtle but adds so much to the song. I love Andre 3000's rap, too. It ends very abruptly. 16. Forrest Gump- Clever metaphor here- "Forrest Gump, you run my mind boy". Musically not my favorite on the album- it's pretty simple. 17. End- Slower jam. Definitely just an outro. I feel like it kind of ends the album on an add, abrupt note. A lot to process but for the most part I enjoy this album a lot!
This album hits on so many notes, and serves as a great solo effort from Ocean. He finds his voice and leaves us with multiple ear worms and a well-crafted album of lyrics.
Was a favourite of mine anyway. Pyramids is a stand out track.
3/5 nice chilled album 😎
Very good and enjoyable album
Absolutely cracking stuff - only knew one or two tracks and will be back to this
Some juicy tracks that get under your skin 🍊
Is this one of the best 4s so far? Probably yes. I am really surprised how well the album sounded. The melody with a differnt genres, including rap. There are some flaws, which tear it a bit down to make it a 5. But maybe one day...
Not what a normally listen to but I enjoyed it!
Omg JAAAA TACK. Lost, Forrest Gump, White, Thinkin bout you
One of milestones of new hip hop, with beautiful r&b, soul pieces. First half of the record is just perfect
Honestly nothing special but overall good. 4.2/5
Pretty good, very strong overall. Blonde beats this as an album, but both are well matched track-for-track. 7/10
Liked the second half more than the first, good vocals and some interesting production throughout
Nice, modern, timeless classic. This will be an album to remember the 2010's in the upcoming decades.
Great listen! Loved Pyramids.
5/5 for groundbreaking and timelessness, good to listen to on a rainy day
Haven’t listened to this album in a while. It was nice to come back to it.
Great
Took me back, still love this album and gave me some nostalgia.
Soulful mellow album.
not exactly blonde but it will do you know
Reallllly good - I should listen to more FO
I like this album a lot. Super Rich Kids
hmm chill vibes and good for bgm
Solid
That's some good shit
Something nice and slightly more modern.
Found the potato meme. Aaron Burr bedroom pop. Cool and spacey, will have to listen to more and remember to not act like Frank Ocean is underground.
This was chill and moody and perfectly alternative RnB. I really liked it.
solid RnB record
Everyone on my colleges "class of 2025" insta page lists Frank Ocean as one of their favorite artists, so when this was generated, I checked it out just to know what all the fuss was about. And yeah, this album is excellent. Great mood, interesting songs, chill vibe. Great album.
Good album, liked it but for me it just doesn’t come close to blonde, that’s why this is a 3/5 for me. There are quite a few tracks i found boring or I would skip. Highlights: crack rock, pyramids, lost, pink matter
Enjoyed listening to it. Won't listen to it again.
alright
3/5 Favorite Song: Forrest Gump
A strange album, I can't decide what I think of it. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it, but it was much better than I anticipated but only in parts. Odd.
Production is great and this album is more funky than I would have thought, albeit through my rather snobbish lens of pre-implied hate towards anything released after 2005, i still thought it was okay. Nevertheless, I found frank ocean to sing in a sort of mumble rap/whine and I find it deeply unsettling; softness as a singer is a virtue when the lyrics pertain to the same ideals, these two stars do not align when I’m listening to Frankie boi, for whatever reason that may be
Alright
Pretty far outside my usual music tastes, but I am a fan of The Weeknd, so it didn’t feel too jarring. I bet after a few relistens, I would love this album. But as a first-time listener, it’s a 3/5 for me.
The song Lost suits his style. I would've put it in as a single. I wonder if they did? This almost feels like yacht rock of R&B and rap coming together. Like it's easy to listen to and has moments but doesn't feel it's doing anything beyond that.
normally i like little bits in between songs in an album but i feel like this actually pulls down my rating a bit for this one.
Not my bag, but certainly not bad.
20260627 1. mal gehört. chillig
Pretty and there’s some decent songs but I would need a bit more energy to properly enjoy this, Pyramids is a real stand out because of its change of pace.
Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album I don’t know any songs but I remember when this came out How do I feel about this artist? Neutral Pre-Listen Thoughts: We’ll see of this lives up to the hype Favorite track(s): Bad Religion Post-Listen Thoughts: The lyrics were great, the instruments were great, this isn’t my usual genre but I enjoyed it enough.
I get why people probably like this so much. It is just just so different and unique to what was coming out at the time. For me, not enough of it hits for me. A few of the tracks I absolutely love, Lost in particular is a top tier track for me. But overall the album just doesn't flow track to track in away that brings me back for a full listen often.
There’s some good songs on here but I’ve never quite got the frank ocean hype
It was definatly influential, but not my vibe.
Wasn't what I was expecting, still not really my thing but was alright to listen to whilst working
Quite interesting but it seems quite long. Sometimes when an album seems longer than it is it is because it drags a bit. A little to much autotune type vocals for me
I had never heard of Frank Ocean before. Not familiar with his music He has a good voice especially his high fasotto. Rap Style songs: rapping, synths, drum machines. No song stands out. Not bad. An average album. Three stars.
Crack Roooook, how ya feelin? Definitely an interesting album, and I don't hate it. Don't think i'd revisit it. but if I had to, I could listen to it again. I like his voice and the chill vibe.
Mad album this. The tunes are good, wasn't completely keen on the story telling style of vocal. Interesting though and would listen again
Already listened to this album before so this is My 2nd listen, I liked moments of it the first time round Pyramids is one of my fav songs of all time and still is from this album, Both parts are so good. Thinking bout you such a good opener and I like that some of these songs go into more personal things about Franks life, the vocals are top tier aswel. But This album is a tough one for me though because I think it’s overall really solid but It still just doesn't connect to me all that much and I only really go back and listen to pyramids, thinking bout you and maybe lost. I feel like it has everything I should love as RnB album but at the same time I just doesn’t grab me enough to love it as its full package which is ashame because I can see the depth that this album has, On one hand I think the album is amazingly produced and Franks Vocals are top tier but on the other hand I think the songs can be quite bland and stale. Maybe it will grow on me as time goes on.
Overhyped and overrated album. Interesting things happening instrumentally but the lyrics are terrible, full of juvenile wannabe playboy pimp wordplay via trite rhythmic delivery. Highlights like Thinking About You and Pyramids hold their own, but the rest is lukewarm at best.
So this is what has become of soul music. Franks voice is great, warm and smooth as silk. The beats have a touch of funk and music has all the groove you can handle. What looses me is the auto tune, needless rap verses, and electric element. I feel like an old man shaking my fist at the clouds on this one. It's a good album, but not so good that I don't miss old school R&B.
Notable Textzeile: Whatever feels good, whatever takes your mountain high Keepin' it surreal, not sugar-free My TV ain't HD, that's too real Grape vine, mango, peaches, and lime Kids these days don’t even know that there was a decision about something not being HD.
Felt like this was crazy popular when it came out so maybe I’m a hater, but I thought it was just ok. Overall average but the highs were super high the lows were just boring
Modern sound and a quality of production consistent through the whole project. I liked the vibe, even if i wish it had a bit more of a personality. The style felt too bland and generic to me.
I enjoyed it, kinda weird but gave me like MF DOOM/Kendrick vibes.
Not my type of music but a decent album nonetheless
This is not a style of music I listen to much, but I thought it was good. Not really for me, but good. I should give it another listen and pay closer attention to the lyrics.
3.5 really. Some really good songs that are well known for a reason but others that just get a bit lost
Enjoyed this a lot. Varied and well crafted
Smooth vocals, fun beats, easygoing
Didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, probably warrants a revisit at some point 3/5
his other album is better because of elliott smith
Frank Ocean is pretty good. The interludes are useless and some of the more experimental songs are so so but the more straightforward songs are good. Sounds like Stevie Wonder. Sweet Life, Super Rich Kids, Lost.
This is okay. The vocals are mostly boring, with a few fun narratives in there (Super Rich Kids, Pyramids), and there's no reason to continue Forrest Gump's cultural influence. Bad Religion is the most interesting song, and after the necessary deciphering, seem to imply an okay progressive message (in 2012 everyone still felt the need to equivocate on LGBTQ stuff, shrug emoji). But the background soundscape has some nice weird touches. It's an inviting musical world, though not a real exciting one.
7/10 Buen album, divertido. Algunos temas no me coparon mucho pero ninguno malo
Pink matter banger resten meh
There are undoubtedly some excellent tracks on this album, interesting textures, smooth production, lovely vocals but ultimately it's all just a little...boring...
Not quite sure how to rate this. Some of it I liked. Feel it's a 2 and half but I'll be generous and give it 3 as he's got a good voice
It was ok but lacked the energy I expect from R&B.
A bit of a toughie: there are some great tracks here and there that do not add up to much.
No clue what to make of this album. Was he was Islamaphobic for a song? The music was interesting.
high school throwback
Enjoyed this too…some tracks better than others, but overall good.
I was expecting better tbh. 3.5
I wonder what happened to Frank Ocean? When this album came out, there was so much buzz about it. Now having listened to it I do understand why. If Wilco ever wrote Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as an R&B album, it would be Orange. I don’t believe that I have heard anything like this album in R&B world. It feels like a flow of emotions being broadcast across the radio. Key songs for me were Pyramids, which was the most traditional of the R&B sounds, and Pilot Jones, which was bare-bones raw emotion and vocal talent. I do have to give out a shout out to Super Rich Kids because it’s kind of a cool song too with a pretty pointed opinion I think anyone outside the World of Afluent-enza has witnessed. Overall, after all these years, I get the hype.
Random thoughts: * I know the kids like this one. I've seen Frank Ocean on Ellesse's playlists. * I think I finally got it on listening this time. I liked "Super Rich Kids" and "Pyramids" specifically. * This is a Venn diagram of hip hop, rap, and indie. Pretty cool crossroads. * I'd definitely put this one on again.
some pretty good songs that i would love to listen, but overall not the type of alum that i would play anytime
3.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/frank-ocean/channel-orange/ Okaaaaayyy I admit, it’s good. Really don’t think it’s the masterpiece some make it out to be, but I’ve been too harsh about it. The beat drop in Pyramids is still one of the stupidest things in music history tho.
This album was big when I was in high school. I do really enjoy the neo soul sound. Medium rating is just a reflection of the fact that I don’t really connect with it.
Smoove R&B. Sounds like music I could comfortably fall asleep to, and it's well-executed, but not really my jam.
I don't know about most of this, but when it hits it hits hard. I'll admit everything from Thinkin Bout You to Pilot Jones I wasn't vibing with this at all, but Crack Rock was solid and I really liked Pyramid. After that, Monks, Bad Religion, and Forrest Gump were all songs I really enjoyed. Don't know if this is one I'd listen to again, but it was at least worth listening to once.
Production is great and Frank has a fantastic voice. I couldn’t connect with some of the material. Some of it’s simple and some of it has depth, but it’s like a light switch how it changes. Not sure if that makes sense. 3.0/6.0
10’s Hip Hop ⭐️Pyramids
Good
Good album, not as good as I remember when I first heard it
Yeah!
Primera escuchada: Medio aburridon.
6/10 - A good debut album that shows Frank’s skills and gives a great hint of what’s to come!
Very chill album to listen to for tonight. I was a bit confused by the short 'interludes' between songs. I guess they are supposed to make the album sound like a radio station/tv channel, hence i am not ranking them. Still, I found it enjoyable and easy to listen to the album. But, it hasn't stood out for me, much of the music i feel like i have already forgotten and it hasn't stuck in my head. 3/5 Start - Thinkin Bout You 7 Fertilizer - Sierra Leone 5 Sweet Life 6 Not Just Money - Super Rich Kids 5 Pilot Jones 4 Crack Rock 4 Pyramids 3 Lost 5 White - Monks 6 Bad Religion 5 Pink Matter 5 Forrest Gump 5 End -
Gay but okay
Apparently this one seems polarising here looking at reviews and for some reason most of positive ones are just scoffing at some perceived racism from more negative reviews? WTF indeed. Now onto main review: I was expecting not to like too much or even hate modern soul artist. But honestly so far I am quite enjoying this, some really memorable highs, production not surprisingly is great as is usually the case with this kind of super popular music. Maybe my only gripe is the rhytmic ideas are just not that interesting to me in most modern music, they sound too simplistic. However, still, I am quite enjoying this and will be looking forward to hear his biggest album. This is for sure one to REVISIT like with Ms. Badu which I enjoyed even more, but I will still at least give it 3, shit, maybe even 4 stars?
A good album, not quite my style, s product of it's time
I quite enjoyed listening to this. Nice music with thoughtful lyrics.
I have previously heard much about Frank Ocean, and for whatever reason, just never made it to his music. Thus, I was quite looking forward to this album today. Immediate disappointment. I don't like autotuned mumble rapping, and certainly not in an A/A/A rhyme scheme. Fortunately, that didn't last too long. Though somewhere about track 3, I began to wonder what I was missing based on the hype surrounding the artist and this album. Disjointed samples that didn't fit with the song, weird soundscapes, and pretty middling music/lyrics left me sort angry about what I was listening to. By the middle-ish of the album I was ready to rate this 2 stars, skip through the tracks to confirm, and move on with my day. Starting with Pyramids, I think, the music began to coalesce and seemed to be much easier to listen to. Had the whole album been like the back half, it would have been a 3, but not for its excellence, necessarily. More because I just would have felt bad giving it less 2.75
It's alright... R&B isn't my style, but I liked some of this, it was enjoyable, and I wasn't just waiting for it to end. I was familiar with quite a few of the songs, and now that I've listened to the album in its entirety, it's just what I expected.
this was almost a 4, but it's not fully my vibe enough to hit a 4, a 4 needs more for me to go off of
Had high expectations for this, but it didn't do as much for me as I wanted
Quite enjoyed this with its Prince and Stevie Wonder influences. A bit too long though and probably won’t listen again.
This is a tough one. Obviously a master lyricist, but I think I am coming at this way too late to understand most of the appeal. Never dull, occasionally powerful, but ultimately held back by not understanding the context that provides a lot of its reputation.
I listened to Blonde once several years ago and was left moderately underwhelmed. That album is one of the biggest let-downs I've ever encountered in album listening; for an album that was so acclaimed, and to know so many people (I'm talking a dozen, at least) who had such an epiphany with it, where it became a deep comfort in their lives...and I thought it was mildly "okay". Naturally, getting this from the generator made me audibly groan, but the whole point of this challenge is to give everything a fair shake and understand why these records were chosen. I think it's worth mentioning that I think Frank Ocean possesses deep talent and knows exactly how to make impressive music. I won't deny that, and I won't deny that he has an ear for theatricality and production without being overindulgent. Does that make for music that resonates with me, however? Not really. There are songs on here that I really, deeply enjoyed (as with Blonde: I can't deny the power of "Nights" and THAT moment), but as a full album experience it still grated on me a bit. I will say I currently prefer it to Blonde though.
Not bad...nit cimpletely my thing but not bad
I enjoy a few of the songs on this album but it’s not as revolutionary as many make it out to be.
Nothing special
I'd rather just listen to a D'Angelo album.
Really good big band/ jazz production on the tracks that captures a chilled out California beach stoner vibes and builds on that landscape over consistently. Franks voice is also very warm and inviting just pulling you further into the album. I feel I never fully connected with the album though and I think it is due to franks meandering vocal lines that never settle in Melodie’s. That said in context this was far and above anything else in hip hop and r n b in 2012 apart from Kendrick Lamar and so should be hailed as a great show of what can be done when rnb is produced by a musical talent as big as franks. But for me it is not my favourite 6/10
Too bad his a big time lame-o in real life
So this is what the kids are into!!
This album had lots of hype when it came out. I tried several times and shrugged each listen. Why couldn’t I get the hype? It’s fine. Just not for me. I like Frank’s voice but this isn’t something I come back to ever. That’s said, his follow up album “Blonde” is an album I like a lot.
Expected more after reading the Wikipedia-article about the album. It's ok but not more.
Bit of a surprise, I liked this album, not heard any Frank Ocean before, but a nice soul voice, and some great lyrics
I love his smooth delivery, and I appreciated the guest spot from Andre 3000 on Pink Matter. Pyramids was a bit long, but overall, the songs were listenable and well produced.
Sounds like a summer album. I like it, lots of classics
Experimental R&B that I sometimes got into and other not. Have a better understanding of what Ocean does now so I may have to explore more
Going in, while I'd heard of Frank Ocean, I knew virtually nothing about him. Alternative R&B, huh? This is fine, and despite Andre 3000 being involved, it's not great. Just a solid 3 all over.
Its got a good flow on most tracks, focuses on his vocals mostly which are solid and have more of that modern style vs some of the same type of singing back in the 80's. Feels specifically velvety and silky smooth for most of it lift drifting through a candle lit bedroom. I like that the content has some interesting themes in it, from growing up with family money and addiction, unsure what Majin Buu is doing in here but it made me smile. Sweet Life and Lost were notable to me.
Nice. Nothing truly memorable, but good production, and nice flow.
Lowkey fluid.
I still don’t think I get why he’s heralded as an absolute genius, & I don’t have any soft spots for this sound/time. But Lyndsie played this a lot when we were first dating so the nostalgia is high. Even minus that, this not being my genre of choice, real god.
If q-tip was reincarnated as Frank Sinatra and was down to f***
The great example of a modern r&b, or “abstract” r&b, or “cloud” r&b, whatever you call it. Great in a sense of being representative of the genre, not being a great album. I’ll give credit where it’s due, for certain creativity and such, but this whole thing of “alternative” r&b (yeah, one more way it’s being called) should have existed for a year or maybe two at best (like some kind of a curious novelty, you know), and then should have been forgotten and left in the past. Cause there’s nothing in it to be praised.
Great album very nostalgic
Super Rich Kids, Monks, and Bad Religion stood out of the songs I haven't heard. Back and forth on this album. I would listen to certain songs again, but not the album all the way through. 3.5/5
A proper chill album so can have potential to seem boring if you're not in that sort of mood. Its a super clean sound with a good sense of emotion in the songs, and some songs being gems like 'Lost'. Known of Frank Ocean but had never listened to him apart from 'Pink + White', but liked it, again very chill sound but still some funky little parts to the beats. Overall a decent listen so 3 stars from me.
I need to listen to it a few more times.
surprising album. I went in to this one thinking that I would really not like it. I ended up liking this a lot. Possibly not an album that I would buy but I will certainly listen to this on a streaming service occasionally. My only negative with this album are the less than 1 minute tracks of noise(?). By and large I liked most of the regular songs though. I do have to comment on the "About the Artist" write up on Spotify. I will have to confess I have never heard of frank Ocean (I guess I live under a rock) but I was kind of surprised with the "Visionary artist...., celebrated and critically acclaimed" bit. I liked it, but perhaps not quite up to these standards
The one or two really good tracks help bring this up to par. Otherwise it’s not really there
