Reviews (page 4 of 7)
This website has given me the impression that most Americans are obsessed with Weezer to the point they have convinced themselves that Weezer somehow invented the combination of loud guitars and sweet melodies. To me they are a one hit wonder given a leg up by Happy Days and a the numbers don't add up nostalgia for Buddy Holly and Mary Tyler Moore. Anyway, I daresay Ash do sound similar having similar reference points but I'm happy to prefer their genuinely youthful exuberance even if I forget there is a certain amount of written in the studio filler on this album that the big singles obscure in the memory.
I had never heard of this band. I felt like it sounded like mainstream rock from maybe a later time. I expected something more punk like given the time it was released. Lol the name of the album is 1977 but it came out in 96! Makes a lot more sense now. Anyway I enjoyed some songs. Wasn't bad but not that memorable either.
This is another of the albums where I just go 'Wait, this got on here over, say, more Warren Zevon?'. Is this that different in any meaningful way to whatever sort of scuzzy rock you vaguely prefer?
Meh
Okay, I know I've asked this question multiple times already, but I just cannot for the life of me understand why this is the case. Where the fuck is the Weezer Blue Album on this goddamn album list? How did they think to include fucking Ash but forget Weezer? I don't get it! There's genuinely only one answer that makes sense, and that's the presence of a UK bias on this thing. It just has to be there! The Blue Album is genuinely one of the greatest and most exciting debut albums of the 90s. Say what you will about their later years, but Weezer fucking killed it with their first 2 albums, Blue especially. This album? It's average! 1977 is a painfully average album. There is nothing special here. There's nothing bad, don't get me wrong, but to call this a must-listen is absurd! I don't even know what to say because the album just kinda happened. The singing is okay, but it's a bit too quiet in the mix for me to potentially appreciate it. The music work is decent, but that's about it. You could say that about this whole album, and I will. I don't even know what else to say. That's how average the album is. Again, 1977 isn't a bad album, but it's not interesting at all. It is the definition of a 3/5, unlike the Weezer Blue Album which I would give a 6/5 if I could. It's just okay. Light 3/5.
It was okay. Nothing special.
I only know Ash because of their track on the Life Less Ordinary Sdtk. They weren't really on my radar in 1996 but I think I would have enjoyed them if they had been. They have a trippy/rockin Weezer thing going on that's pretty enjoyable.
another grungy metallic '90s rock band? not keeping exact notes here. one of the early songs was more metal. oh yeah--this sounds like elliott smith. i guess either/or was released the following year. angel interceptor--nice little love song i dunno it's fine? 3/5?
90s/early 2000s esque indie rock. Couple interesting songs but not the most noteworthy album.
A decent garage rock album overall. I think it goes into the pop-oriented direction a bit more than I'd like as the best parts of this record are when they really lean into the guitars and fuzz.
likeeeee
Great album reminds me of back on the day
Whilst the singles really do roar with energy and have a massive singalong choruse s the other tracks sometimes lull in energy. That said whilst it’s not the deepest experience it’s good fun throughout
Really liked this back in high school, and it's still kinda fun but it hasn't aged that well (and I'm not just talking about "Kung Fu").
nice pop rock but doesn't stick - played it twice, nodded my head and stomped my feet, but haven't anything to my library (though "Darkside Lightside" almost made it)
favorites: goldfinger; innocent smile; angel interceptor
Positively surprised by this one - fresh sounding Irish rock that's 50 years old, does not sound like that at all!
Pirteää meininkiä, vähän alkaa loppua kohden puuduttamaan, olisi voinut levyä hieman lyhentää.
Nothing impressed me all that much. Perhaps I shouldn't listen to the album of the day while trying to work.
Pretty generic 90s music but not bad.
On Day 44, Ash’s 1977 serves as a decent reminder of youthful energy, but it lacks the vocal triumph needed to follow a five-star masterpiece. While it is amazing to hear teenagers deliver this level of tough 90s rockmanship, the album ultimately struggles with replay value outside of its two heavy hitters. Girl From Mars and Kung Fu hit the brain just fine with their triumphant momentum, but the rest of the LP feels like a pretty average collection that doesn't quite break into my personal rotation. It’s a solid 3/5—I respect the technical simplicity and the sci-fi ambition, but it doesn't have enough standout substance to keep the iron hot.
Börjar och slutar jävligt starkt. Däremellan är det ojämnt, ibland bra, ibland för tråkigt. Landar i ännu en 3a.
1977 was fine but I liked 1984, 1989, and 1999 a lot more.
Surprised to have never heard this one before. Sounds like a nice album of the era.
I'd Give You Anything guitar riff resembles heavily Black Sabbath Iron Man. Regardless of that point I l quite liked this. Easy listening middle road stuff in positive sense.
American pop punk, nor skate punk for that matter, has never been something I enjoy that much. I'm from the hardcore school of thought and most of the poppier styles feels very watered down. I mean, for the longest time punk equaled Exploited, Discharge and finnish Lama style music. I only later learned that the US style is another branch in the same tree. Still, I can't shake the feeling of "sell-out" and making the music easier for the masses. Anyway, this one is a bit different since they're mixing sounds of britrock, floaty pop music and said US style softer punk into a decent mixture. Around the halfway mark I started to feel fatigued and the last 3-4 songs were too much, this album is too long in my opinion. I wouldn't've thunk I'd like this. But I sorta did.
Wow, this takes me back to being a teenager. Singles are great but maybe there is a bit of filler. They should have put Petrol and Jack Names the Planets on this album.
Not bad but nothing too memorable either. Sounds like a LOT of other bands from the same era. The guitar stands out as being a bit more inventive than many Brit-pop bands but not enough to stick with me.
kind of fun, sounds familiar - some enjoyable tracks but is it essential listening? not for me
like the demos for other 90s rock i really like
Listening session: january 24th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: no Thoughts: I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the opening to this album Favourite tracks: Lose Control, Goldfinger & Gone The Dream
very okay
Defo a few 0.1 points added here for 90s teen nostalgia, although they were one of some of my friends' favs rather than mine.
Groupe inconnu.
guitar solos were soooo good and the lead singer has a good voice but maybe for some more extreme music. get him yellin 🗣
I didn't mind this album - it has some fun moments, a good feel and energy... and it's certainly well made. On the other hand, it doesn't feel like anything noteworthy, you know? It's perfectly good, but does it really deserve to be on this list? (It's far from the worst thing on the list, but sometimes bad is at least interesting or noteworthy.) Still, I liked it well enough, and would listen to it again happily. I probably won't, but I would.
Not a bad bit of pop punk but not truly outstanding either
Listenable alt rock from an Irish garage
It was okay, but I didn't really notice it. Faded into the background.
Yesterday I listened to the album. Today I don't remember what I heard. It can't have been very impressive to me. 3/5
Good
I like the harder instrumentals, usually the intros, but I don't like the pop punk sound of it, also, not a fan of the ballads
This took me back some great songs in it which were realised not quite a 4 star but close
Pseudo grunge? (Genre is dumb) from some british kids. It's ok, not essential.
Ok
decent, pretty forgettable, but enjoyed the last track, good note to end on
Can hear the influence for other bands such as Nada Surf. Liked the song Oh Yea. Others just ok.
Good album.
Pretty fun, I liked this! I even listened to some of the special edition bonus content. It wasn't like, mindblowing, but pretty good.
Decent album that is a creature of its era.
ok nice
Decent 90s hard grung
Cracking start, tails off towards the end…. Shame.
Simple rock, nothing special. Moving along…
Melodic garage pop sounding band I never heard of. Dug 'em.
have not listened before i liked this! sounded very familiar like something that my family would have listened to fav: girl from mars
I pioneer to the legendary late 90s punk era. I think the high pitched screamy lyrics matched with its energy unlike a lot of the albums in this era. Because of that I will give it a high 3.
Okay, this album is aggresivly mid. There like one good song and its the first one. Makes you hyped and then just a kinda wet towl that isnt horrificly bad, but just kinda meh. Its so nothing. Weird listen that the album got weaker and weaker as it went on.
Sweet & crunchy guitar work. Opens strong. Fades a bit after that. Lots of promise but a little short. Still a very good record.
Pretty good stuff. Nothing outstanding. I put Kung Fu on the playlist.
A nice change of pace, and not terrible, but also, not that great.
Alright but not great. I wasn't familiar with the band, although I think I've *maybe* heard "Kung Fu" before. The highlight is probably "Girl from Mars."
Standard
I don’t mind the album … but I can’t see why this makes the list. Mid tier Brit pop rock
I find this record very sweet. I adore the bright and jubilant chainsaw power chords, pop punk sensibilities and open, pleasant vocals. Its kinda grungy, but in the cutest way possible. While the vibe is there and it passes by like a dream I can't say there are any individual compositions which stand out to me greatly. It wouldn't stop me putting it on again though.
Ash gets a solid 3 from me, some of it really appeals to me but a lot of it is just decent to good
A surprisingly fun album. Nothing particularly stood out song wise to me, but I can't deny that there's some fantastic guitar playing and riffage throughout
Sounds like a 90's alt-rock band. Some Nirvana, Pixies, maybe a little Green Day and proto-emo sound thrown in. Fine musicianship. Nothing particularly earth-shattering, but a decent listen.
I’ve always liked Girl From Mars, but could take or leave Ash.
It's ok, nothing special. Too much distortion.
Kan me niet me herinneren
Decent album by a band I think I may have heard a few songs by previously. Ash is interesting in that the feeling I kept getting was: this is good but it can't be anyone's favorite band right?
Classic 3 star
I really liked the tie fighter sound at the beginning.
It didn’t hit as hard as it should. Some moments where awesome but in total I am not convinced.
All the ingredients are there, but somehow it just doesn’t hit like other jangly guitar based indie bands of the time. Nice little stroll down memory lane though.
I bought this for 'Oh Yeah' as I liked it a lot, as for the rest, I'm fairly sure this is the first time I've listened to it all the way through since I bought it. It's ok, a fair bit of filler, but some banging tracks nonetheless. They are a band I'll go and see if they are playing on my doorstep for £20.
it was okay, just hasn’t done anything for me, wasn’t special like
3.5
It was fine. Was hoping for more from a power pop trio. But it was fine.
This was like pizza from Pizza Hut. Not the best, but I’ll take it. 3.5 stars.
I was momentarily impressed at the start, but ultimately let down.
this is a really fun britpop album that at the high points sounds like the soundtrack to the most fun and nostalgic 90s movie you can think of. a really quick listen because i was enjoying it, goldfinger was the standout track for me!
3 solid album, good rock background
More hits on this than I realisef
Solid album of 90s alt rock and glad to be exposed to something that was big in the UK but essentially unknown in the US. Music is good - I found the singers voice not very good however. Thin voice, limited range, and missed quite a few notes.
1977 is a fun power-pop-punk album with some catchy hooks and fast-paced riffs. An impressive debut from three 19-year-old Irish blokes. Sometimes living across the pond allows me to discover tunes that I really should have already been aware of. I like music like this and am looking forward to seeing where Ash took things from here.
Thought I might like this more now I'm older, as I always felt a little too young to get into Ash when they were a thing but this didn't really hit. It was all a bit samey and only one or two tracks stood out. Mid.
Middle of the road pop rock with a few bangers. Not as good as Free All Angels or Meltdown
I can see why this album has caused a lot of influence. I "like" it. I think. But after a while I became bored of it simply because all the songs sound so similar. Respect, but meh.
Wasn't familiar, but it's a decent listen. In a post-grunge 1996 you certainly could have done worse.
I like Ash, they’re a fun band to see live and this album is pretty good. Shouldn’t be anywhere near this list though. Maybe the author wanted to add an album to represent Northern Ireland but even then there’d be the undertones, stiff little fingers and them.
Hey. This was made in 1996. What a scam. At least it sounds straight out of late-70s sonic literature, but with a tangible grunge influence. From the opener, Lose Control, you can hear several differently-distorted guitars vying for control with several others layered underneath. So much effort is put into the stringed instruments that you almost forget that the vocal is meant to be good. (Almost.) At least having a lazily-enunciating vocalist is also on par with plenty of the "1977" punk output. (Lost in You has the same issue.) It gets a little better with Goldfinger, a song that reminded me of a slightly gazier 90s Green Day track. Wheeler is channelling that smooth young-man voice that was extremely prevalent in alt-rock of the era. That decent vocal continues for *most* of the rest of the album, but I really would prefer something more along the lines of Armstrong. I'd Give You Anything has an excellent riff, and I bet it'd be exhilarating to listen to live. Great solo, too. Is that a reversed guitar? I don't think so, but it's got an effect put on it to make it sound reversed. Pretty nifty. The guitars are generally great in this album, culminating in the centrepiece track Oh Yeah, whose second half absolutely soars with its instrumental. So many instruments coexisting and playing slightly different parts to one another. Very cinematic, and probably my favourite song. There are some violins, too, which certainly helps. (This cinematic texture is revisited in the album closer, Darkside Lightside, which is another really solid track.) The music also somewhat diverges from the canon with Innocent Smile, a hyper-distorted mess of experimentation with guitar noises that, while kind of cool, had definitely been done before. Not my favourite track. 3/5 Key tracks: Goldfinger, Girl from Mars, Oh Yeah
I actually quite liked this, but it's ANOTHER example of why this thing needs half stars. Yesterday I got a madonna album that I rated 3 stars because I didn't hate it, but would have rated 2.5 stars if I could have. Today I get this, and I'll probably rate it 3 stars but I would rate it 3.5 if I could. It's a whole star difference, but they're going to get the same rating. That's insane.
Girls from Mars have too many tits.
There’s a lot of Nirvana and Green Day vibes here. Overall the album has a good sound, but it’s not quite there compared to its genre contemporaries. I think the songs are decent, but mostly held back lyrically - pretty generic in that regard. Favorites include Lost in You, Goldfinger, Gone the Dream, Let It Flow, Angel Interceptor. If this was a Japanese band and I couldn’t understand the lyrics, I’d probably like it better.
Pleasantly surprised by this one. Maybe a bit too long but I enjoyed most of the tracks here. It made me think of power pop à la Teenage Fanclub mixed with britpop and straight indie rock.
Pretty standard 90s Alternative Rock, but with an enjoyable twist.
A great alternative rock album, nice songs and everything, but lacks something special... and a little too long winded. 3 stars!
Fun rock sound Kung fun is a product of it's time Album feels a little over-long
Don't have much to say here. I liked it :) Favorite track: Girl from Mars 3.5/5
Some catchy songs, fun if inessential
Pretty nice britpop/rock
I was back and forth on this album the whole time, first song I was out, then flipped back and forth probably 5 times. Ultimately it's a good barometer for late 90s alt rock and interesting enough to hold your attention. 2.5 rounded up bc it took me two months to get around to it and it didnt crumble under the manufactured pressure.
This is ok. It reminds of Radio in the 90s. This is the stuff that was background noise and didn’t catch my attention. This album gets better as it goes. Girl from Mars was good and I also like “Kung Fu”. And then “oh yeah” goes back to “meh”. And the songs after that are good. This album is hard to get a feel on. “Angel interceptor” is great!! The album starts rough and is so much better by the end. I’m torn between three stars and four stars.
Not bad. Goes into the background
Musicianship is good, but didn't love the songwriting. Drummer was really good and I really liked the opening track
A collection of great songs but way too fucking long. This is getting a three for that reason alone
Not bad. ★★★
this was aight. pretty decent rock record, but nothing really to write home about
This is good, but it's not remarkable. It doesn't offer anything I don't get from other bands. That Sugar album from a couple months ago was way better than this. I enjoy listening to it and I think they're a good band, but this certainly doesn't need to be listened to by everyone before they die.
Competent, but not distinctive and I can't see any reason I would go back to it. A name I remember from back in the day, but didn't pay attention to them then.
This was quite good
Never heard of these guys. Sooooo 90s. Garage rock that sounds more California than County Down. Quality varied with some of the b sides being a bit meh
Good, energetic power pop/alternative rock album from the mid-90s. One of the few albums from Northern Ireland on this list.
Enjoyed some of this
Completely and utterly pretty okay
Pretty inoffensive grunge-lite. Some of the tracks have a pretty decent crunchy groove.
Rätt bra, men lite lika när man lyssnar på hela. Tror bara albumet är i genomsnitt "bra" men inte så mycket sticker ut, men man hör hur andra band har inspirerats
Empezó medio paja y rectificó. 3.5
One of the rare albums were I like the later tracks more than the beginning.
Nada que me impresione.
unpretentious 90s rock
Super fun 90's rock album. Definitely a relic of the time, but that's not a drawback.
Kinda gay
I'm surprised I've never heard of this band. Very 90s for sure. It's decent. 3/5 #194
The album is okay but the live show of this band would probably be a better way to evaluate them. 3 stars or C.
First half of the album is a 4/5. Good lyrics throughout.
The first three songs were superb
I liked this
= the Beatles
I don't know how to rate this one. When the opening guitar track hit, I was positive this was going to be a 5 star listen for me. Then the vocals arrived. It's not so much that he's a bad singer, as it is that his voice doesn't really match the band's energy. Overall, I added Kung Fu and Darkside Lightside to Liked Songs, but probably only because they had more band and less singer.
I really liked the variation of guitar sounds and the musical progression from major to minor keys. It was an interesting sounding rock album. Another late 90s rock winner.
Punky, poppy rock music that so many were doing in the early 90s. Good, but maybe not essential
I love Ash and was stoked to see them on this list. It was like walking into a fine-dining restaurant and seeing a dirty ol’ hotdog on the menu.
I vaguely recognised the song "Girl from Mars" from Gilmore Girls. I knew it was a Jess & Rory scene but I had the context wrong... apparently it's from the end of his first episode according to the interweb. I thought it was from a later episode in the scene where Jess is smoking at the petrol station (so dangerous!) Jess's first episode is a great episode of Gilmore Girls. I'd likely give it 5 stars. Time to review the album... this was fine to good. I could see why some people would really enjoy this. 3 stars feels apt.
They really play to their influences. It's alright
High school indie eitthvað. Aðeins of mörg skrítin álegg þótt grunnurinn sé góður.
It’s an Irish alternative rock band who are basically doing Oasis but with a faster tempo. ‘Lose Control’ was a great opening track, it was tuned down and had a more punk edge than the rest of the songs, and I wish they did more like that. ‘Kung Fu’ and ‘Let It Flow’ were good, but the bulk of the album was kinda bland. 3/5, it was good in spots, but mainly just OK.
I had never listened to this album and really enjoyed some of the guitar sounds they were experimenting with. But this got a little old as the tracks continued. It felt like a new guitar effects peddle had been purchased for each track and its settings all turned up to 12. Interesting.
Such a blast from the past! I remember they played ‘Oh yeah’ and ‘girl from mars’ a fair bit on Triple J back in the day! I’m pretty sure one of these songs was on a hottest 100! I haven’t listened to the band since, and hearing this album made me think of all the band that nearly reached fame, but disappeared - I wonder what happen to Ash?
Perfectly fine middle of the road modern rock.
Another one of the those millions of those mid1990s bands that I deftly swerved, never listening to them on the radio or buying an album. In this club would be Mansun, Ocean Colour Scene, Dodgy, Cast, Shed Seven, Charlatans ad nauseum. Within that context I didn't think this album was too bad. It was rockier than I expected, harder guitars which I liked, but didn't go anywhere interesting enough for a higher score.
Pretty good. Bunch of songs had a familiar beat. Almost felt like an homage band. 6.0
Not much here of interest. Most of the tracks sound like generic mid-90s alt-rock.
Goldfinger is so peak
Indie Thursday down the city centre. Sticky dancefloor and that really cute DJ who never made eye contact with anyone. A brief fling smoking cigarettes. 1970s polyester shirts matched with corduroy miniskirts. That's this album. Except it's the b-tier version. Still some great songs: Goldfinger, especially.
Is it incredibly generic? Yes. But is it enjoyable mid-90’s radio rock? Also yes. There’s nothing spectacular here, no real edge, but it’s a solid band and a real departure from the other Britpop of the time.
Some nice sounds - very diverse. Wah peddle and orchestra is a weird mix. Sounds overproduced. Overall a decent listen but nothing I would repeat. Definitely a product of its time.
I think that if i would have encountered this album in 2001 when I was 17, it would have checked all my boxes of distortion, guitars, and crash cymbals. As it was, it didn't hit as hard. Fine overall.
For some reason listening to this the day after Motorhead was really funny to me. A lot of the music is fun and a bit grungy/heavy but then the vocals were like.....very Oasis but maybe...listen I wouldn't bet that the singer put a lot of money into lessons. It was Fine but also felt lackluster in the distinct sense of it sounding like Every 1990s Dude Band? Kind of curious about their earlier work more than this one based on the critic reviews/comparisons. 2.5
1977 – Ash (1996) | Britpop / Punk Pop / Alternative Rock | Avg: 6.36 | Favorite Song: “Girl from Mars” 1977 is scrappy, hooky, and packed with the kind of youthful urgency that defines a debut like this. “Girl from Mars” easily rose to the top for me. It’s got that perfect mix of melody and punch, and it captures everything Ash does well in under four minutes. There’s an infectious energy across the album, and when the band is locked in, they really hit a sweet spot between pop catchiness and garage-rock grit. That said, the consistency isn’t quite there. A handful of tracks in the middle and toward the end start to blur together, either losing steam or leaning too heavily on attitude without enough substance. It’s fun, but sometimes a little shallow. Still, even with its uneven pacing, 1977 has a charm that’s hard to deny. It doesn’t try to be deep. It's Ash wanting to be loud, fast, and fun. And when it sticks to that formula, it delivers.
Greet nostalgia for me - took me back to being 13 again! But... I never liked how Wheeler's vocals are buried in the mix. Maybe he just doesn't have a strong voice. Good but not great!
I quite liked this one. Felt like there was some decent variation between songs although some were definitely more my thing than others. Fav song: Girl from Mars Least fav: Darkside Lightside
I didn't not like it. But it didn't really excite me either. Pretty unremarkable. Favourite song: Girl From Mars Least: I'd Give You Anything
Average music.
Weezer ahh album. Guay, normalito pero guay. Canción favorita: Gone The Dream A destacar: Que en el inicio de la canción "Lose control" hayan sampleado el sonido de un Caza Tie de Star Wars 3/5
I liked this one. Not the vibe I was expecting
Pretty good sound.
6.5/10 Highlights: Lose Control Goldfinger Id Give You Anything Darkside Lightside Innocent Smile
Op momenten was het echt lachen maar net niet vaak genoeg.
eh
nah
Never heard of them before, came out strong out of the gate. First 3 tracks were great, after that the album kind of got a little boring and blurred together. Still solid 90s rock album.
Its not my favorite Ash album but is very solid and has a great energy to it still.
3/5.
I went away thinking this was released in 1977 and was thinking "wow, this is seriously ahead of its time". Now I'm forced to accept this is pretty passable even if it's just the same kind of sound all the alt rock had at the time.
Not bad - some good rock sounds and grooves, but not outstanding.
2.9 I'm not sure what this band are really adding. I'm not saying every band has to be unique, but it looks like they're leaning far too heavily into Sonic Youth/Dinosaur JR, with shades of Weezer/Nirvana. It just sounds like a cheap imitation. Only good track was the (practically Daydream Nation ripoff) Innocent Smile.
Good drums and some catchy guitar scattered across an alright album 2.75/5
mid-90’s rock, and while it sounds dated at times, if you’re in the mood for it, it just might scratch that itch.
Struggling to finish this list because of average albums like this one.
Слушал без раздражения. Но в конце последнего трека звуки рвоты изрядно испортили впечатление от альбома и команды в частности. 5,5 из 10.
Um bom álbum de rock alternativo. QoA Vesper.
It’s not outstanding in any way, but pretty good. I can hear some Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and perhaps even som Heatmiser on here
Found myself enjoying this far more than I thought I would. I wouldn’t say it gets to brings great. But it’s solid. 3/5
Cut the overall time on this by a third and it would be so much better. Not every song has to be over 4 minutes! Still, better than I expected considering I had never heard of these guys. I assume their inclusion boils down to "semi-popular, from Northern Ireland." Not exactly essential, though. Still, cool stuff.
Much heavier than I expected and the Black Sabbath rip off was a bit blatant but not a bad effort all in all.
- uuuhhhmmmm, ok. Sort of middling, somewhat competent. Not ground-breaking. Am I betraying my State-side bias? ..... 2.5 -
Utknęłam w jakimś piekle przeciętnych rockowych popłuczyn. Ta ma przynajmniej posmak dobrego britrocaka (chociaż zespół jest z Irlandii). Mimo to, kurcze no. Delikatny wokal, fajna gitarka i to by było na tyle. 6/10 i błagam o zmianę scenerii.
It was fine. Nothing spectacular. I forgot most of the songs once they were done but I wouldn’t mind hearing them again
solid rock
We're into Proustian territory for the singles here, especially Girl From Mars. It's just a smashing song with a huge hook in it. It's tempting to wonder what this is doing in this list really, as it is quite run of the mill indie, but I was pleased to hear it.
6.8/10
Some good singles and I'd like to like this more but apart from the hits it's a bit flat and samey.
90's Northern Irish alt rock band I'd never heard of? Feel I should've liked this more than I did, it was good but nothing really stood out about it. I guess they didn't have much staying power if I wasn't familiar with any of their songs. Probably won't keep listening.
Mid 90s rock album that had modest success in the uk and nowhere else. Apparently Ireland maybe. And I don’t think they are part of the uk. This was utterly average. Really didn’t want o finish it while on vacation but I did.
A good album, not great by any stretch. Ash are great songwriters but their style and production make some of songs a little dull. Love the heaviness of guitars with such a fragile voice!
It started off really interesting and a good mix of mainstream but guitar rock. As the album went on though, they sort of mellowed and it still was good but not the edge I felt they had in the beginning. Solid and enjoyable but nothing life changing.
This is some scorching guitar work. I liked Lose Control and I'd Give You Anything. The rest was mostly blistering guitar with sing-songy vocal melodies that weren't that catchy. I don't feel like the violins on Gone The Dream really meshed that well with the crunchy guitar. Is Kung Fu a racist song? I don't know. We have to have songs about something other than falling in and out of love (which is at least 85% of all modern popular music). Pretty good but didn't really win me over enough to give it foursies.
I really enjoyed how rockin' this was. Overall, it was a bit muffled though, and it left me craving a crisper sound and crisper vocals. Loved jamming out to it despite that!
One I had never heard of and really didn’t do much for me.
Das esch halt so es typisches Rockalbom us dere Uswahl. Onder Rock verstohd i dem Fall Ash vorallem Rockgitarre. Die stellt sie nähmlech vel z luut i was dezue füehrt, dass de räschtlech Song undergod. Klar, t Rockgitarre esch scho s stärchste, das heisst aber ned dass es nome Rockgitarre darf ha. Abgseh vo dem esches eigentlech no relativ guet. Jetzt ned bsonders abwächsligsriich oder so aber emmerhen geds einigi doch no relativ cooli lieder met guet Riffs ond spannende Ufbaute. Mer esches au no eifach gfalle s Albom dörezlose, allerdengs hani au öppis näbebi gmacht.
Kind of liked it. Heavier than I thought it would be. But I wonder if this band wasn't British, would they be in the book. Still, might revisit in the future.
Better than I was expecting. Pretty Rockin album from start to finish. Lots of big riffs, I can appreciate that.
Un très bon disque, mais un autre cas de pas pour moi. Un peu trop punk pop rock à mon goût.
I want to like this more than I do. It has so many elements that should add up to an album I really enjoy. But something in the production really saps all the energy that should be present. It comes off sounding really flat. That this made it on the list and Weezer's Blue Album didn't is maybe a war crime?
Dumb band name but surprisingly not that bad
The vocal is flat and this hasn't aged well. Why is this on the list? It would easily be replaced with Weezer - Pinkerton also released in 1996 and miles ahead of this. 2.5/5. Raising to a 3.
Heavier than expected. Started out pretty strong, but by the end of the album found it a little boring. Not bad, but not great
Contains 90s anthems
Very 90s, lots of noise - I enjoyed it but don’t think it will really stick with me.
Nice
I listened to this album almost four times to figure out what I thought about it - Its OK. I hear a lot of promise when the group is really playing hard rock on... Lose Control and Darkside Light side, but everything in the middle is generally pretty toothless pop/alt rock with a noise lean. There are a couple standout moments in the middle: I'd Give You Anything is nice and loud, the strings on Oh Yeah are pleasant though the song is repetitive. All around not bad but really wished the band just went for it. 3/5
Heard of the band before. I had no idea what to expect but I just like 90s alternative rock music so I enjoyed this quite a bit. Altho it lacked stronger songs towards the end 3/5
When this one started, I was all in. A hard, fast, driving guitar sound with plenty of distortion and awesome solo work? Something that sounds like there's stakes, that something is imminent? Sign. Me. Up. Then it kinda slowed down a bit, but the intensity kept up, and I was cool with that because there was immediately some variety. Then it even got a little lighter with "Girl From Mars." Then it just kind of wavered between the vibe of the second, third and fourth tracks the rest of the album. Less distortion, less urgency, lighter vocals, and much less at stake. It got a little too samey as it went on. What really summarizes my opinion of this album though, is this: I thought it was good, I just didn't think it was super interesting. Like it had all the pieces of an album I should love, and that made it kind of uninteresting to me. Which is a bummer because there's a lot of potential here for something really cool hear. There were flashes of Oasis, The Beatles, Nirvana, Pixies and plenty of other influences from across decades. It just came together as something that I didn't quite love. But still, solid. Three stars. I just see some lost potential here and that bums me out. Standout Tracks: Lose Control, Girl From Mars, Gone the Dream, Innocent Smile
I knew all of the hits off this album from when it was first released. The rest was new to me, and surprised me a bit as it matched the quality of the releases rather than just being filler. It's not a great piece of music, but it would feel churlish to give it less than 3 stars.
Note to self: 1 star = Rated, but shouldn’t exist, a waste of studio time, imo 2 star = Not good 3 star = Ok/Good 4 star = Great 5 star = Desert island disc, there shouldn’t be too many of these! Perfect album length for me around 40mins, if over an hour long it has to be a truly awesome album for me not to subtract a star.
idk i was exxpecting better
Meh, fine. Made me want to listen to the band Hum who I really like.
I liked it. Never hear of them. It was a little long and I was ready for it to be over by the end. Chop 20 minutes off of this, and it would’ve gotten a 4.
Aight
Couple of fun ones. Doesn’t dip too low in quality.
Pretty solid indie rock album, hadn’t heard of it before!
uhm .. yeah i guess this was fine idek
Not sure how to feel about them. Overall, I liked it. Good listen and a bit more punk on the pop-punk scale.
I dont think I heard of them. But they were pretty good
Vocals were not the greatest but I thought this was a solid 90s album for its type, more singles that I recognised than I expected to.
This jams. Never heard this when it came out (except for Girls From Mars) but I would have liked it.
This is where it becomes obvious that this book was written by British music critics, because this is essentially a UK version of Weezer, but with worse songs, singing, and guitar playing. There are at least three Weezer albums that should have made the list ahead of this. All that said, this is fuzzed-out Power Pop with a Britpop flair, so what’s not to like?
Pretty classic alt 90s.
We are like 60% of the way there on this one. I grew up in the pop punk era. And this is the beginnings of it being dragged out of the muck. It has that punk DNA but it's completely in the 90s here. It feels like exactly like alot of other stuff of the time but also it's own. Im not sure but it's alright. Girl from mars is funny and silly. Like a thing that a 12 year old would write but I mean so was half that stuff I liked when I was also 12. I enjoyed this but not all the way
Grrëk grrëk
This was ok. Didn’t realize hit for me.
Ook zo'n easy listening album waar verder niet genoeg blijft hangen om het in de toekomst nog een keer op te zoeken.
Live stuff was better
Quite a few songs I remember from the 90’s. Not a huge fan but appreciate the memories
not really my cup of tea actually. it sounds too much like Nirvana but it's not bad i guess, just not for me and that's okay:)
Honestly? This is a decent album. Almost a perfect capsule of what early era pop/punk tended to sound like before all the gloss was applied in later years. This particular LP seems to lean towards the more awkward-on-purpose production that Weezer were famous for with The Blue Album and Pinkerton - just less refined. Messy riffs, imperfect vocals, catchy melodies, and lyricism that that was both impressive and spoke to teens in the 90’s. It somehow both feels like a piece of work from its time and one that stands the test of it. Particular standouts: Goldfinger, Girl From Mars, Kung Fu, Let it Flow, Innocent Smile, Angel Interceptor. It’s a strong pop punk album, no doubt. But its place on this list is very questionable. Especially when the band I mentioned before, Weezer, who clearly have a level of influence over Ash’s sound is a glaring omission. That’s not an attack on ‘1977’, but in the grand scheme of things - not many are listing Ash as a big player in shaping pop punk as we know it today. They’re simply a good band in a sea of great bands. Still, it’s worth a listen. It won’t waste your time if you’re a fan of the genre. 3/5
Big year 1977. Of course Elvis died. We had dinner with him the week before it all happened. He was supporting Houmous & Chutney on their UK tour as a surprise guest. Len made a particularly heavy and dense rice pudding. We aren’t sure if that is what actually set off the chain of events! He really did wolf it down. We had to tell him to slow down. Len never made another rice pudding - a blessing in disguise! 2.5
3.5
Never heard of them before! It’s good, it’s not memorable. To be fair I was listening at work and didn’t really give it my full attention. I liked the 90s sound and I’ll have to give it a full listen later.
Not bad but yeah there’s similar better bands doing the same thing at the same time. Maybe if the vocals were at all understandable…
Legal, ouvir mais
A bit messy at times, but mostly nice. The vocals are a bit low energy though.
Girl from Mars, Oh yeah… loved this when it came out, bought the single and played it all summer when it came out. I saw them live at the TW Forum when the album first came out in 97.
This album is okay, it just overstays its welcome a little too long. If it was 30-40 minute, it would be a 4. But 50 minutes is actually insane for anybody.
Girl from Mars. Tune. The rest were fine. Simpsons: No
Girl from Mars is probably the standout track on here, the rest aren't bad, solid mid table
It was fine
It was ok. Didn't really have any wow moments.
I'd never heard of this band nor this album prior. Yet, I've heard all of these songs. Absolutely nothing here that stuck out. The auditory equivalent of oatmeal with raisins. Inoffensive, but bland and uninteresting. Glad it's over.
Another one of these middle of the road albums that isn't exceptionally but provides a good listen. I felt like that when it was released and basically still do.
Started off kind of noisy then I didn't pay much attention
This one kind of surprised me. Loved Goldfinger and Girl from Mars. Lost interest by the second half but a part of me feels like the project will one day grow on me.
Some good rock songs
Once again, a 90s album I tried very much to like, but could not get into due to the overwhelming "90s sound" that I never can quite describe. Some singles here are effective, and even a bit catchy, but I'm certainly not in a hurry to get back to 1977.
3/5
Decent garage rock, high 3
Some OK tracks but generally a bit too noisy for me!
First listen
Brit pop album that sounds a bit like a twee Nirvana. Unremarkable but solid.
318/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Very easy to listen to the whole thing... but kind of all blended together.
okay i can admit there are some good songs in here. particularly the end of the album. but it’s not my cup of tea personally
i don’t love this type of music but i was pleasantly surprised throughout!!!
Calling this Brit Pop really feels wrong and not only because Ash are from Northern Ireland. But the music is so clearly in debt to American bands, past and present. Ok yes, there's a strong Buzzcocks vibe, but it's outweighed by the influence of the Beach Boys, Sonic Youth, Star Wars, and a slew of quirky early 90s indie bands from the states. The band were so young that they had to tour between studying for exams and needed permission from their parents and the school's headmaster. Which is both embarrassing and very cool.
good debut
# Album Name: 1977 # Artist: Ash # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Couple of good songs on here like girl from mars and goldinger but overall its a very average britpop album. # Top Tunes: Goldfinger / from from mars / kung fu / oh yeah # Would I listen to it again? No
Pretty standard '90s alt rock album. The best way to describe it is 45 minutes of Weezer b-sides
Fun and grungy, but gets old quickly
This was alright. I’m only really familiar with their song Burn Baby Burn, the tunes on this record didn’t quite go as hard, but it was worth a spin
Not familiar with Ash, decent debut. Base line of all songs seemed similar, kinda liked the lead singer’s voice. Best song was Gone The Dream. Kung Fu sounds like some 70s punk rock (maybe that’s why they called the album 1977.) Not sure since it dropped in 1996. Oh well. Oh Yeah (2.6*s)
Kinda mid album 3/5
Canny this, heavier than I remembered albeit I reckon the last time I heard this would’ve been 2002. Imagine how class it would have been to be in this band at that time?! Has that exciting sound (for the time) between US grunge rock and Britpop. This is the band I would’ve wanted to be in as a teenager. Can’t say I’d ever really listen to this again, but enjoyed it anyway. Main criticism is it gets old, quite quick. They do have a formula that works and they stick to. Goldfinger / Let it Flow best tracks for me. A solid 3.5
Didn't like the intro at all, but Goldfinger is solid, as was Lost In You. Kung Fu had lots of boppy, poppy hints, probably my favourite song on the album. Decent enough. Passed me by when I was younger, but I dont think I missed out on too much.
Sounds good. Has elements of grunge, rock, melodic pop, I rather enjoyed this. But it's not ground breaking, and it can get a bit samey. Hence a bit harsh 3 stars.
ágætt popprokk frá unglingsárum mínum. smá fortíðarþrá og minningar um erfið ár. 3,5. gyllti fingurinn er smellur.
Enjoyable, admittedly nothing really stood out to me but I think I liked every song on this album just fine. I don't think there are any issues with the production and none of the songs stick around longer than is fun/enjoyable.
This is actually some really great, post-grunge alternative. Sure there are so.e radio friendly hit attempts in there, but a good amount of intricate guitar play and rockn riffs galore
Forgot to rate this when I listened to it and now I can't remember what it sounds like. 6?/10 Fave track: Girl from Mars? Only track whose melody I even vaguely recall.
It's good 90s alter rock, at least I know that. Energetic, jangle, just a bit midiocore, given Oasis, given The Smith, very britpop. I generally feel very indifferent towards it. Not outstanding. A mild 3 is probably the best description.
This was really something. Sometimes it was interesting and noisy and sometimes it was very annoying 90s power pop.
Some of the songs are fun, but the vocals aren't all there. I wouldn't consider it a "must listen"
Solid
It’s ok
liked songs: Lose Control, I'd Give You Anything, Oh Yeah, Lost In You Starting an album with the TIE fighter sound is such a power move. Overall, this was a fun 90s alternative sounding album. 3.5
Can't believe this was 1977. Way ahead of its time!
Dude can't really sing. Some of the songs are OK. 2.5 stars.
78% Best: Lose Control; Let It Flow; Innocent Smile; Angel Interceptor; Darkside Lightside Must-Hear? Not quite
Overall: 5/10 It's fine and innoffensive, I didn't get much out of it. Some of the fuzzy guitar work was really cool but this feels like something I'm gonna forget about tomorrow. Fav Song: Lost in You Least Fav Song: Kung Fu
I got excited when I first turned this on and heard the intro of a Star Wars tie fighter leading into some hard shredding. Goldfinger is a little more generic 90s rock, but I enjoyed it. Got some early Blink-182 vibes from that song. Girl From Mars started off cool with the fuzzy-ness of it, but then went back to the generic 90s well. The rest of this didn't really stand out to me. It's kind of disappointing because the start of this was good. Needed some more hard-jamming energy. Low 3.
A lovely slice of ‘90s-ness, certainly better on the tracks when they up the volume & energy.
bridging indie and nu-metal that can veer a bit 6th form
Definitely a quite 90s sounding record. When I was younger I listened to music like this quite a lot, but I must say this barely does anything for me now. I wonder if the situation would've been different if I had heard any of their songs before. While the sound of the band appeals to me to some degree, my main problem with this album is the lack of any type of interesting melody. I also felt that most songs were a bitt too busy. They mostly turned into a distorted mess. Weak 3.
3
Good album, worth another listen. Singing is a little weak but songs are catchy
Lots of fun with this one, I had it when it came out. Firmly an album of the 90s. Some pretty cool tunes, let down by a weak singing voice but for a bunch of scruffy Irish teens it's pretty good.
the songs i already knew were enjoyable but the rest weren’t very interesting. i can understand why people complain about there being too many britpop albums on this list.
I had heard of Ash before, but had only heard one or maybe two of their songs. I like their sound and this album started off good, with a cool sound and groove that I really enjoyed. By about the middle of the album, I was less impressed and by the end I was just sick of the sound. It started sounding very muddy and poorly recorded. Three stars.
Quite good musicianship. On first listen I didn't hear anything lyrically that made me think we'd get out of the shallow end, and that's why I'm not prone to go back to it. But if I do, maybe I'll reconsider and love it... Not sure. This one was a tough call.
Good solid healthy rock and roll, I dig it.
I'm sure I've heard the banks before, but they've got a pretty generic 90's rock sound. I like the album, but I don't think it was particularly good.
Seems fine. Very typical of the genre. Solid middle-of-the-road, trending to pretty good (Girl from Mars).
song is proper 90s british rock but the melody is a bit weird purest teen energy at it's finest i like those stuff even when it's not made by oasis or blur or pop punk era green day 3.5/5
