Reviews (page 5 of 7)

This album was okay for most of the listening, but I feel really ended on a high note. Not enough to make it a 4, but definitely enough to make it a solid 3 that I may return to.

Liked this one more than other Britpop I've heard so far.

I'm glad I read the wiki on this one. Silly me, I thought 1977 was the release year and I was so impressed at how much this sounded like mid-90s indie pop. I was amazed at how far ahead of their time they were. Nope, released in 1996, right in the middle of their time, if not late to the game. A good album but I was looking for something to set it apart and wasn't able to find anything. Just let down by their lack of time-travel prowess, I suppose.

OK, bit samey. britpop rock, very 90s 3/5

Is it 1977 from 1996 or 1996 from 1977? Either way, it’s crunchy guitar-heavy Britpop goodness that I’ve never heard of before. Will I listen again? I think so - I found some bits especially crunchy.

decent enough album but nothing in the realm of greatness. solid rock numbers and some decent, but kind of shaky vocals at times. some of these tracks are really loud and a romp ('i'd give you anything,' 'darkside lightside') and some i felt were a bit unremarkable ('gone the dream,' 'angel interceptor'). at the end of the day, I felt like it could have been so much more and didn't really blow me away. it's not bad, but ultimately a bit unremarkable.

High points paired with low points, last song sucks

A bit borin

I did not a private session on Spotify. I knew of Ash from the delightful song "Burn, Baby Burn". There were a couple of songs on this album that had the same rocking intensity which I throughly enjoyed; however I did find some of the tracks really lacking and didn't play well with singer's strengths. Some of these songs might make it on a playlist, but I won't listen to the album again, twice was enough.

This was some solid-to-good indie/alternative punk-rock. Very 90s in tone, but not in a bad way. I'd say I enjoyed more than I didn't here. A lot of it just washed over me, but there were a few standouts. Before the vocals started on I'd Give You Anything, I thought it was an N.I.B cover. The guitar riff is lifted almost verbatim from the original Sabbath song. I also really liked Innocent Smile -- contrast between the distortion and the plucked harmonics is nice. Album closer Darkside Lightside was a fun ripper -- energetic with some nice breakdown in the middle. I'd say this straddles the 3/4 border for me. Erring to the low-end because I don't really expect to listen to this again.

First song absolutely rocked, kinda made me disappointed the rest of the album until the last song. Would have liked more shredding and less singing. Felt very average besides that first song.

Not terribly offensive but also just power punk pop. Actually really liking Girl From Mars. Reminds me of early Blink 182. Let It Flow sounds like early Weezer too but a bit more fuzzy. This albums kinda all over the place but not mad about it. Lows were certainly low but really loved the highs. Middling 3.

It was really refreshing. And, in some ways, pioneering, because it sounded like a lot of what you hear nowadays... Anyway, good songs to spend some time with A solid 3 <3

So I've just had Frankie goes to Hollywood wttpd. Which the singles are good, but the rest of the album is a bit crap. Girl from mars and oh yeah aren't great singles in my humble opinion. But the rest of this album is much more creative/enjoyable.

I fell in love with this one a little by the end. A really hard working rock album that reminded me a little of Weezer. Pretty good in every respect from guitars to drums to vocals.

I thought I didn’t know Ash until we got to “Kung Fu.” While the first several songs were kind of forgettable, uninspired Nirvana-lite, “Kung Fu” isn’t much like those, and not in a good way. Bubblegum junk. The rest was decent, but ultimately it's a skippable album that I wouldn’t return to.

seemingly generic garage rock from the era, probably won't listen again.

Reminds me a bit of Sonic Youth, with a bit of Foo Fighters. Nothing really stands out, but it's good overall.

Started off strong with a few good tracks but got boring by the end. There's some elements of punk, grunge and pop rock, which are all genres that I like, but it just didn't quite click.

Pleasant enough.

Started out sounding a bit like Green Day, then the rest of the album headed towards some originality. Obviously never heard of this band before. I’m a sucker for anything Irish, still…

Kyllähän minulle ysäri-alt-indie maistuu. Mutta kivasti rokimpia biisejä myös! Ja pidän lauluäänestä, jonka on ihan vähän epävireessä. Kaipaisin vain vähän mieleenpainuvampia kappaleita. Death Cab For Cutie tekee tän ehkä vähän paremmin hetken päästä (tai oon vaan ehtinyt syventyä siihen enemmän).

Vähän liian "kekseliästä", mutta Lost in You voitti minut lopullisesti bändin puolelle. Antaa tulla uudestaan!

Recorded by a giddy group of teenagers, right as the post-“Morning Glory” bubble was about to burst, “1977” is a solid if bloated addition to the Britpop canon. It’s mostly heavy, thrashy and maximised, with often speak-sung, slack, lacklustre vocals (think Stephen Malkmus without the wit). We kick things off with an emphatic but arguably non-descript opening, with the sound-and-fury-signifying-nothing of “Lose Control” and then fairly unpromising single “Goldfinger”, which gets caught up somewhere between its indeterminate melody and cloying guitar figure. However, some of the other songs clicked into place when I read that Ash admitted to being indebted to Teenage Fanclub, which can’t be a problem in my book. “Girl From Mars”, “Angel Interceptor” and the Ramones-style “Kung Fu” are the most winning examples of this, going relentlessly uptempo and adding impeccable choruses to the walls of guitars and thrashing drums. These songs are Ash embracing their off-kilter, scrappy and hearty side: they come across much more youthful, earnest and likeable as a result. What holds “1977” back, though, is a nagging po-faced approach to many of the other songs here. Unlike Teenage Fanclub, and other youthful Britpoppers like Supergrass, Ash don’t seem to be so concerned with catchy hooks or playful songwriting… or perhaps they used all their energy on the songs listed above. Other cuts here, like “Lose Control”, “I’d Give You Anything” or “Innocent Smile”, feel more like exercises in trying to chase a heavy, riffed out sound than craft any songs with real heart or emotion to them. I can appreciate the band prove they can rock out song after song, but it’s such a limited scope of sound and ends collapsing under its own weight in the second half of the album. There are some diversions: “Gone the Dream” and “Oh Yeah” crowbar a string orchestra into the mix, and “Lost In You” has a nice clean opening guitar figure and solo, but ultimately, “1977” winds up feeling stuck in a storm of noise.

A mix of lots of other bands I more prefer, one and done

Not too shabby.

An alright album.

I'd say 3.5!

Album started off strong and was right up my alley, but ended up sounding very samey as the album went on. 3/5

I enjoyed this. Nothing groundbreaking, but it was good for a spin on a rainy Thursday. 3/5

Not bad

Thought I hated it at first but it definitely got better as it went!

Not bad but all of the highlights were because they kind of sounded similar to something else that was out around this time. First song comes in hot though, I liked that.

Surprisingly approachable rock songs. Great riffing on opener Lose Control. Combination of noisy, crispy guitar and catchy hooks on Girl from Mars. I liked the instrumental bridge in Oh Yeah. Innocent Smile is another good one. They pull a lot from punk, but there's different influences in here. Goldfinger sounds britpop and Angel Interceptor could almost be new wave with its 80s sounding drums. My favourite song is still the first one but there's some pretty good moments here.

It sounds like Elliot Smith goes electric.

Ash Ketchum’s debut, not bad

I liked this piece of trash somehow

Very good. Super talented rock band

Ah, the "Girl From Mars' group! Outside of that, a pretty typical power pop/garage rock album from the mid 90's. It's fun and a lil goofy ("I can't live without my Kung Fu movies!") and I don't think it's trying to be more than that. After having a good listen, Ash honestly sounds like an Irish version of Weezer to me. Go figure that they toured with Weezer for a bit around this album's release.

Never heard of them before. Some indie/brit pop band. There've been worse on this list, but they're not bad, just a bit boring over time. + for the Tie-Fighter sound at the beginning.

Shines when it's more distorted guitar solos and less britpop nonsense. Still a good album, though.

Better than I remember. Faded in the second half. Seeing a lot of comparisons to Weezer’s Blue Album. This is far inferior.

p795. 1996. 3 stars. Lightweight Northern Irish Oasis wannabees with some decent tunes, let down by excessive guitar wankage, filler and limp vocals.

Not a bad album. Girl From Mars is a great song as it Let It Flow. Great 90's album.

fairly nice poppy noise rock that gets repetitive and indistinct too quickly . 2.7

This was not bad at all. Just really solid Brit pop with some punk to it.

Goldfinger // Girl From Mars //

There are some decent tunes on here. I can still remember all the words to Girl From Mars. Which is kind of what I thought about them back in the day. Tim has done well for himself though

Fede støjende guitarer på den her plade! 3+!

It’s fine to good, Girl From Mars is really nice but the sound is pretty flat throughout and it’s not super worth listening to it as an album vs select singles.

I always had somerhing against Ash and all these year later I couldn't tell you why, maybe the singer was just too good looking. Musically it has some grit which I like but the vocals are a bit light. Stand out tracks: - Lose Control - Goldfinger - Girl from Mars - I'd give you anything - Innocent smile

I vaguely remember listening to some of this a long time ago back in middle school. It's pretty standard mid 90s alt, but I dig it. I don't think it's world-changing at all but it's a solid album. A little generic sounding perhaps, but that may just be listening to it 30 year later. I liked a lot of the songs but there was nothing that was really memorable or that made me want to listen to other albums of theirs. Nothing else to say about this one. 3/5

Very mixed feelings here. I was never especially into Ash - they were just another one of that whole Britpop crowd, and I preferred others - but listening to this again, I realised there were a ton of songs I knew and liked. On the other hand, it doesn't hugely stand out for me from a bunch of other things of that era. So - 3/5 for some nostalgia-boosted banging tunes, hampered by Tim Wheeler's terrible singing.

Never really listened to Ash before despite being aware of them. Started as a very good album, but it's overly long and a lot of the songs sound very similar. I also have no idea how this counts as Britpop, sounds much more similar to bands like Weezer and Pavement to me. Fav tracks: Goldfinger, Girl from Mars, Innocent Smile

Rocks relatively effectively, crisply and intensely, but not especially memorably (as is the case with too much '90s alt rock). It's definitely polished and assured for a debut (especially one by teenagers), with some nice variation and a few solid+ cuts one could imagine enjoying on further listens. In the end, this is neither terrible nor terrific. But, yes, one prefers it to Blur, and yes of course the record goes on too long just like every other record from the '90s.

I'm digging this and surprised I'm not already familiar. 90's TV show / movie background music but with a bit of substance to it as well. Perfectly serviceable alt rock.

At first, I really liked 1977. But it was really long, and sort of stayed in one punky alt-rock lane. Why did albums in the 1990s all have to be an hour long? The exception that proves the rule is Weezer. Those first three albums are just a half-hour of power. All killer, no filler. Ash could have shaved a couple of redundant tracks off of this album and came away with better record, just by virtue of it not overstaying its welcome. I might listen to the first half of the album again someday.

Just imagine if you brought someone back to your room and said "hey you must hear this album before you die" and then you played this album. First, they would probably leave. Then, you would wonder why this album would ever have that status for you or for anyone else. I mean, really. Its not bad , but even if you were Gareth Hutchinson it would be a stretch to put this up against other more significant albums with that "before you die" being the basis for comparison. 3/5

A level above the usual Britpop dross of the time, hard rocking and produced by Oasis producer leant some credibility to these gangly teens (at the time). I enjoyed it at the time and I enjoyed it now, but it's not setting the world on fire at any time in its existence.

This album was fine, but all the songs sounded the same and blended together. It just isn’t interesting enough to return to.

The energy of the 1st song drew me in. Parts got less intense, but overall, I'm happy to have learned of this band.

"1977" is the debut studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. Brit pop, power pop and garage rock were the genres this album was categorized into drawing comparisons to the Buzzcocks, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. Yeah, they sound like some other bands as well. The album was produced By Owen Morris. The band members included TIm Wheeler (guitar, vocals, string arrangements), Mark Hamilton (bass) and Rick McMurray (drums). The album received generally positive reviews with critics liking the "catchy" nature of their songs. Commercially, the album debuted at #1 in the UK. "Lose Control" opens with the the sound of a Star Wars' TIE fighter. Hey, i is named "1977." An escalating guitar and punk driven rhythm section. I would call this music urgent. Soft vocals pleading for a girl to cheat on her boyfriend. The fourth single "Goldfinger" has a more melodic guitar. The music sounds very 1990's alt-indie music. Weezer came to mind. "Girl From Mars" starts with an acoustic guitar and then the band kicks in. A similar punk-pop song as he reminisces about a girl. The first single "Kung Fu" is a tribute to Jackie Chan. A punk-pop open. Has a fast-slow-slow thing goin' on. Very Green Day-ish. They slow it down a bit in "Oh Yeah." Strings are added making it one of two songs I would put in the Brit pop category. The song builds. Very good production. "Angel Interception" combines punk and doo-wop. A nice mesh up. This is a very enjoyable album. I wouldn't say it's totally derivative but you do hear influences of Green Day, Ride, Black Sabbath. Oasis, Sonic Youth and Weezer. It does sound of its 1990's time frame and more like the American alt-indie at the time than Brit pop. I did like the one part of "Innocent Smile" where they went Sonic Youth with guitar distortion. I would have liked to hear more of that. Overall, a decent album.

Neither very good nor bad

Meh. 90s whine-rock.

For me this has a Teenage Fanclub vibe at its best, but then also turns a corner quite a bit and goes quite a bit harder (though I'm not sure it serves them well). They don't quite make the heavy angst work for them (which does end up working for bands like the Smashing Pumpkins). Goldfinger and Oh Yeah are the standouts for me.

Pretty good.

I almost like Kung Fu, Oh Yeah

pretty decent generic late 90s rock...

Fairly generic - fine for what it is.

It was okay.

Good songwriting, catchy with great vocals. Talent here, but ultimately kind of forgettable as it's sounds like so many other 90s rock bands.

Sounds like some lost tracks from green album era Weezer, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Some neat songs, but otherwise, unremarkable.

Another alt-rock album. Not really bad, but utterly mediocre. Why is THIS on the list? 2.5/5

After knowing several bands from the nineties that sound similar to this one, it's difficult to find anything new or interesting. Maybe if you listen to it a few times. I think that at the time it was released it should have been a great revelation in the alternative scene but today the genre is very saturated. There are good moments like "Girl from Mars". All in all, it's an average album.

I had never heard of this band prior to listening. This album is pretty good. However, it succeeds in reminding me that Robert Dimery must have something against Weezer for this to be present within the list if the blue album or Pinkerton are not present. Favorite songs from here were Goldfinger, Girl From Mars, Kung Fu, and Darkside Lightside.

Some very excellent rock and roll here! It’s not an every day set of jams for me, but I’m glad to know it’s there and wouldn’t be upset at all about coming across these guys again in the future. Reminds me of an Irish version of Better Than Ezra, only better.

Kind of action filled listening. Not my type of music normally, but certain occasions may call for something like this.

I feel like this bridges a gap between grunge and pop punk in a lot of ways

Bland forgettable.

achei daora

Enjoyable but only one or two hits stuck with me

After the Star Wars Tie Fighter intro, which gives some extra credit in my books, this was immediately sounding like a hybrid of Muse and Arctic Monkeys instrumentally, so bizarre how it seemed to ebb and flow between the two sounds (whilst also coming before both). Definitely strongest at the beginning though, and steadily tails off after the first few songs. Some songs that have been firmly added to my rotation but definitely wont listen to the album itself over and over. Favourite track: the opener!!

I wanted to give this a 4 but it doesn't quite reach those heights for me.

It samples Star Wars and references Star Wars so this was always going to be positive. Favourite track: Goldfinger.

Sounds like Stephen Malkmus’s little brother fronting Generic 90s Band #3

decent 90s alt-rock. Some of the songs are really solid. First song has some echoes of Sonic Youth. I don't think these guys ever jumped the pond, though, I don't remember them at all.

Would listen again. I liked the radio station it generated after the album best.

I feel like if you looked for royalty free stock alt rock music to put in a movie this is what would come up. Seems pretty generic, doesnt really stand out.

BritPop origins can be traced back to this release. A blend of pop, punk with a strong focus on guitars. An enjoyable listen but overstays its welcome at 62 minutes.

Nada especial.

I believe I had a copy of this album in my music collection on my computer. It’s fine though not really standout. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Girl From Mars Rating: 3

Good solid fun, keeps a good amount of energy throughout which i like. 'Girl From Mars' gave me a big hit of nostalgia when it came on, but doubt i'll return to much else here.

Dug it. Can’t believe this was ‘77. Sounded like a 90s album

fun enough

It didn't live me anything... it's ok but not the greatest.... 3/5

Remembered something better

Do you reckon anyone ever told them to change it up a little? Same chords, same dynamics, same instrumentation for its whole 50 minutes.

This was good. It wasn’t great though. I think this showcases a band with a lot of promise that needs time to flourish.

Some great moments, but mostly okay. 3/5

Pretty decent 90s era alt/Brit/indie-rock with strong pop inclinations.

Top Three Songs: 1) Girl From Mars 2) Goldfinger 3) Oh Yeah Bottom Three Songs: 1) Innocent Smile 2) Lost in You 3) Angel Intercepter

For a band that hates being categorized with Britpop bands because they’re Irish, I ask this: “If not Britpop, why Britpop shaped?”

wow. very, very Replacements-y. Which i like - but nothing groundbreaking by 1996.

Not my jam.

Nothing really stood out

3 decent album but not a huge fan of the vocals

Pretty mediocre but overall listenable. Millenial white men would enjoy this (Kyle, host of WUSA trivia). Favourites: girl from mars, let it flow, and innocent smile instrumental solo. 3/5

The opening was p good I liked the guitar except then he started singing and i almost shit myself. honestly not bad overall, not my type of rock tho. i think the instrumentals were pretty sex, some of the songs dragged on a little but still good. didn't really like the singing tho. no favourites, nothing really stood out to me. 3/5

This was so aggressively average to be honest. Like it's normal rock music, nothing super amazing and groundbreaking, but also nothing super abhorrent or unlistenable. Lots of the songs sound like something Kyle the WUSA trivia host would put in his "Guess the Song" questions because they're so white and generic sounding. That being said I rock with it heavy on some occasions - Girl From Mars, Oh Yeah, and Let It Flow are certified bangers. High 3, I'm cool with it

of its time

Fine Britpop. Nothing exceptional.

I would term this as radio music. I knew most of the words and recognised most of the tunes but never owning an Ash album or ever seeking them out. Girl from Mars is a radio staple. They’re not spectacular, or innovative or groundbreaking in any way. But easy to listen to, and if I heard them on the radio It would be pleasant enough.

They remind me a bit of The Lemonheads. Garage rock with catchy tunes, it was an easy listen, but nothing really stuck in my mind at the end.

A whole lotta meh. I'd never heard this—or even heard of it—before, which is surprising because this is exactly the kind of music I was listening to back in the 90s. And listening to it today, I dug the sound, but it failed to really move me beyond just a general sort of nostalgic appreciation. The songwriting is kind of lacking and the vocals were kinda mid. This is really more of a 2.5, but I'll round up just 'cause.

Completely fine and completely unremarkable.

Good in places, not good enough throughout to really resonate, but I like the heavier stuff in the first half of the album; Lose Control, Goldfinger, I'd Give You Anything (my favourite track) are all right up my street. Girl From Mars is memorable as their big hit off the record, but I don't think the last 3-4 songs are very good and that leaves you ending on a disappointing note. Probably a high 2 or a low 3.

I undoubtedly would have loved this album if I’d heard it when it came out. Kind of death knell 90s alt-rock, kind of pop-punk… but nearly 30 years later I’ve heard a million things like it and at least half of them did some of it better. It’s fine.

Gott, fíla þetta.

This rating is brought to you by me not remembering the album I listened to two week ago. What does it say about it?

I think that there is not much to talk about when it comes to that album. It isn't one of the 1001 best albums ever for sure. It wouldn't also be one of the 1001 worst albums ever.

Some tracks reminded me of Nirvana, and "I'd Give You Anything" has what sounds like a classic Black Sabbath riff. Musical styles are all over the place, but not bad for a debut album.

Vocals are too low in the mix. Other than that this is a solid if unremarkable version of this style of music. Other bands did it better.

It's pretty good, but it sounds like everything in the 90s combined into one album.

Don't you think your guitars are a bit much?

Everything about this album is so 90s haha. The cover art, the guitar, the lyrics. Also it's 50 minutes long so clearly from the CD era. It's fun though and captures a lot of what I enjoy about that era, but doesn't really seem push it in any new or original directions either.

good stuff albeit i'll probably never listen to this again

Not bad, some good songs Standout songs: Id give you anything Innocent Smile Darkside lightside

Almost had a pop punk feel, but also kinda garage rocky? Like weezer or oasis kinda. Fun listen

1977 my ass! This is pure 90s! You just know these guys love the blue album.

It was okay

Not bad but not great and no 👍 but would listen to. Rounding up.

Blast from the past! I owned this album and listened to it a fair amount when I was young. Still, I don’t see why it’s on the list. 3 stars, and that’s with a bit of a nostalgia bump.

What did I just listen to? 90s takes on 70s I guess. Having trouble believing this actually existed. Going to have to read about why this was on the list of good records.

Just fine

Kannte ich nicht. Keine Überraschungen, nichts super Innovatives, aber solider 90s Rock. Kann man mal anhören. Wird gegen Ende des Albums leider schwächer. 2,6.

lose control- music make me lose control. um i dont know really. like a 5??? i dont know i kinda like it ummm meow. sorry. i think its a good opener goldfinger- not my favorite. 4. its not bad though its like ummmm.... it would play at the bronx in buffy do you get me. girl from mars- its nice its kinda cute and i can see it playing in a movie. not my thing though? i feel like an element was missing. i think this track soulda been sung by a girl i hate this mans voice. 5 id give you anything- i like the driving guitars. 6. gone the dream- um its kinda boring. 4 kung fu- i think its kinda fun. 6 oh yeah- kinda boring too just sounds like every other song. 5 let it flow- let it grow let it grow. boring. 3 innocent smile- this ones kinda nice um 6 ig. angel inceptor- car ride song. 6. lost in you- huh. whatever. 3 darkside light side- it reminds me of sonic. 5 or 6. its ok. i um ,.... ?????

Never really goes beyond it's influences but the nosier stuff here rules, some echoes of early Nirvana/grungy Sonic Youth at times. Boo to Britpop but this is better than I anticipated

Better than the first ten seconds suggested. We enjoyed this.

Full of great tunes. Really like Ash

I enjoyed this one. Reminds me a lot of a less polished Weezer without the radio hits. Didn't come away after a listen with any particular song stuck in my head. Would definitely listen to more of this one in the future of I ever remember to think about it

Started strong, first song kinda sounded like machine head but felt like it lost steam. 2.5 but rounding up to 3 because I am a benevolent reviewer

Decent grungy rock album. Great fuzz sounds. Just started same-y after the first couple songs. Still good, though, after 9 songs.

Catchy!

Album 249 of 1001 ash - 1977 Rating : 3 / 5 Nice listen. Nothing too remarkable but some decent tunes. Think Buzzcocks, Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth.. ---------------------------------- 1977 is the debut studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 6 May 1996

I flip back and forth between liking the energetic riffs and harder rock, and disliking the vocals. First track drops like a bomb but as soon as the lyrics come in the energy disappears it seems, and I find myself disinterested. That continues throughout most of the album. Girl From Mars is kind of nice Kung Fu is fun, and I'm pretty sure it was used in a Jackie Chan movie during the credits/bloopers, so it gets a bonus nostalgia bump. Overall not a terrible album, but not sure I'd put it on my 1001 must listens.

Interesting album, largely enjoyable but nothing incredibly interesting. Muffled production and unremarkable vocals, yet no real bad songs per se. Girl from mars got saved, kung fu will hopefully be forgotten.

Ça casse pas 10 briques à un canard

#41. I'd never heard the name of this band or any of their songs before. When I saw it was more britpop I thought "Ah shit, here we go again." I think a lot of these British guitar pop bands are so highly rated on here because of the nostalgia factor more so than actual quality because some dj forced them upon you dozens of times a day, but it's hard to be nostalgic for something you don't know. Anyway let's give it a listen anyway. Aaaaaaand... I was wrong. Immediately I already know the first song. I definitely did listen to this dozens of times a day, but not because of some radio asshole, no- but because of an even bigger asshole: me. Even though I was technically correct in saying that I didn't know the name of this band or any of their songs, Lose Control was on the first Gran Turismo, and I've surely heard this song thousands of times because of it. [Which reminds me, I was supposed to acquire a 618 hp mid engined Del Sol once I became an adult, let me go put that on the checklist] While I'm not entirely sure I would call this britpop (when I think britpop, I think Oasis. And no offense or whatever, but Oasis is bad, and you should feel bad for liking it), I'm not entirely sure what I would call it. I'm not sure they'd know either though to be honest. Every song on this album sounds quite a bit different, like they were trying to emulate other bands almost. Like Black Sabbath for example with the song I'd Give You Anything. Guy heard N.I.B. and was like "Yoink- that's OUR riff now, comerade." Dude must have went to the Dave Grohl School of Blatant Riff Thiefage or something. Anyway, despite the all-over-the-placeness of this album, I'd definitely say it's pretty decent. 3/5: acceptable

Fun, energetic album that's a little ramshackle in execution, but it rocks harder than expected. The album also has some great melodic moments that are reminiscent of Big Star or Teenage Fanclub. More than a little rough around the edges, but there's a lot to like here. Fave Songs: Angel Interceptor, Gone the Dream, I'd Give You Anything, Girl from Mars, Oh Yeah, Let It Flow

3/5 It's alright. Best track: Lost In You

Hadn't heard of this band or heard any of their music before. It's fine, just doesn't really stand out for me because it's so similar to my ears to so many bands from that era.

Pop punky, alt/indie 90s rock Good vibes. It wasn’t super remarkable but I liked it. Sounds like music my mom would like. Some of these songs remind of a little of music she played when I was young 3 or 3.5

I'm familiar with all the singles off this album but I never listened to the whole album before. "Girl From Mars" is the obvious standout - a great track full of youthful exuberance. The rest of the album is not so exciting though, at least to my 2023 ears; I think I would have liked it more in 1996. It's also let down a bit by Tim Wheeler's weak vocals.

Eh, no thanks. Seemed a bit samey. Also wasn't my vibe entirely. Do impressive that it was made by 17yrs.

This is definitely an alt pop album from the 90s. The songs about random pop culture, songs about women, fast songs with catchy lyrics. This is what made the 90s so easy to like. Times were good and people just listened to whatever. This album is pretty decent and also dated in some parts. But it was different from some other 90s bands so it was new to me and I liked a good bit of it. 6.3/10

Luke told me they were the biggest one hit wonders ever and I get it. Girl from Mars is a top banger and the rest of the album felt confused... I felt like they were trying to be Nirvana at times and then so twee and brit pop and a bit cringe at others. But overall was a fun listen

I'm just not that into hard rock these days, but I appreciated some of the songs a few were interesting to listen to. will have to try again in the right mood

Good Alt band

Kinda same same

Weird mix of butt rock, brit-pop and grunge... didn't hate it? Some songs had a sorta rudimentary charm that I was quite into. Others were bad! Two and a half. Fave track: I'd Give You Anything

Kind of expected to hate this, ready to write up a scathing review, but there are a couple songs that for sure got a couple repeat listens. Starts off pretty strong, then there are some stragglers in there too, and honestly not a lot of depth all round with this record. But I gotta say, there are some tracks that are pretty damn fun, and it certainly fits in well with the punk-pop resurgence that really is the flavour going round lately with contemporary music, and I'm enjoying quite a lot. Yeah, it's generic and mostly forgettable, but I can't write this one off. I might have on another day reduced this to a record that I didn't need to hear before I died, but I'm actually glad I have. It's just like Bandwangonesque, only not as good. Fave track: Goldfinger

Britisk, poppunk, rocket, lidt grunge, melodisk

Kicking off an album with TIE fighter sounds is a sure way to get me to like an album. Especially that song. A punk album that almost felt alternative which is good since we haven't gotten a lot of those, especially from an album in the 90's

A punk-ish act I've never heard of, what a surprise? Apple Music actually says "pop," which I don't quite agree with, but these guys veer into different corners of pop-punk/rock styles so I'll allow it. I was expecting this to be one that just wafted by me with little impact but, hey, they got quite a few tracks on here that caught my ear. Truly, don't know anything about this artist but I enjoyed this one. Favorite tracks: Girl from Mars, I'd Give You Anything, Let It Flow, Angel Interceptor. Album art: Some strange mirrored image of a street, and the curb dividing the image gives it a quadrant effect, kind of cool. Other than that, a little boring. Years as album titles is always a bit confusing to me, especially when they don't match. 1977 (1996), 1999 (1982) 2001 (1999), 1989 (2015), see what I'm getting at? 3.5/5

A Britpop band that I hadn't heard much of before...definitely on the harder side of britpop. Decent enough overall.

Since I'm not going to have a lot to say here, I'll use the space to make a note to myself about how I'm choosing to rate these, for future reference: 5-I love it and I'm gonna listen to it a lot 4-its very good and I'll listen again 3-its decent/average. I'll listen if it's on 2-I don't like it, but I get why people do 1-terrible music. Indefensible. That out of the way, this is a fun record. I'd never heard of the band before, but once I got to Kung Fu, I realized I'd heard it before from the credits of Rumble In The Bronx. They're Irish Weezer with a bit more of a pop-punk element. I like it, but it's not groundbreaking. This is better than Teenage Fanclub, but not by a lot, so it's gonna get the same rating.

Ash reminds me a little of Weezer. They write tight, punchy songs that put the melody and lyrical hooks front and center ("Goldfinger," "Girl From Mars"). And like early Weezer, they're able to take that bright pop songwriting and play it in a much harder style. "I'd Give You Anything" starts with an awesome heavy metal riff and features a sick, messy guitar solo. Overall this is a pretty good album. The vocals were lacking though. Not enough oomph or personality. And they’re often buried in the mix. I guess that’s fair since the rest of the band is rocking out pretty hard but it feels a little unbalanced. Oof some of these vocals actually aren’t good (“Lost In You”) but I still find the songwriting and music just charming enough to rate it a 3, meaning “I like it.” But a 2.5 is more what I’m feeling. Not a band I’ll listen to again.

Thought this was another pick from the depths of hell that nobody has ever heard before, but I actually recognized like 3 songs on here. British Weezer. Pretty fun.

Grunge/garage band-ish. It was pretty good.

Strong 3-light 4

It's pleasant enough but had already been done 20 years before by the Unde rtone or perhaps the Buzzcocks. Having said that I like the sentiment and the one big hit packs a punch. Genuine, raw and energetic.

Perus 3*

Aika jees. Hyviä riffejä, hyviä biisejä. Viihdytti läpi albumin.

I am getting big Foo Fighters vibes from this. The back end of I'd Give You Anything just seems to descend into guitar noodling for a little too long. Angel Interceptor is probably my favorite on the album.

Yep, this was every bit of a 90s album

It was good, was like a grungier Weezer. The kind of 90’s music that aged quite well. 3.5 stars

Not bad, but nothing special

Better than it deserves to be, and as much as I enjoyed it, I doubt I'll ever seek it out again.

Felt like I've heard this album 5 times on this list. Doesn't make it bad, but just more of the same.

Sounds like the soundtrack for a late-90s movie where the popular guy helps the geeky girl see how beautiful she actually is. Best track: Let It Flow

it has its moments of brilliance. shame those are not that frequent. fav songs: goldfinger, gone the dream, oh yeah, lost in you.

It's a little bit all over the place in terms of genre and style. A little bit of grunge, garage rock and alt-rock. Impressive and unexpected album. I liked the first half better than the second one.

This is a decent enough listen. The problem with it is that it became briefly massive because some A&R man thought "Hey, it's called 1977. Let's price it what it would have cost in 1977" and thus, this full album hit the scene costing £4, when most other CDs were on the shelves for £12 or £13. Kids with pocket money would see it there and look at the £10 note in their hand (if they were lucky... It was probably saved £1 coins in their pockets... The £2 coin wasn't going to be released for another two years) and what would you know - they bought the album, because they could also buy a magazine, go to the cinema and still have enough left for the bus home. To call it a "number one" album from 1996 is a bit of a stretch. It was a gimmick of release, not because they were stupendously popular, ground-breaking or all that great. It was significantly cheaper than anything else you could buy at the time. And a lot of people took a punt on it simply because it was that cheap. The single tracks are entertaining enough, in a Britpop-kind of way. The story of its dirt-cheap pricing seems almost (but not entirely!) impossible to corroborate, and modern listeners will probably have no idea how relatively expensive music was in the 90s so perhaps this album does deserve a place in the list, for the sake of its history. I don't think it does for its music, though.

Decent, actually quite catchy album, just shy of 4 stars though

Average.

It was ok. The album started off promising, with a lot of strong rock vibes, but the slower songs towards the middle were a little boring and I couldn't shake that feeling for the rest of the album

the 90s rock that you would see in flcl 3.5

if you were 14 and you’d never heard the buzzcocks you’d probably love this as much as i loved the buzzcocks but i don’t know if you’d still want to listen to this when you were 50 the way i still like to listen to the buzzcocks every now and then

-this music feels very early 2000’s -i dig it tho!!!! -goldfinger is a solid song, only two songs in!!!!! -girl from mars kind of average but not bad! -favorites: goldfinger, -THE TRANSITION TO i’d give you anything!!!!!!!! -gone the dream is slower and sweeter -i like angel interceptor the lyrics are cute -really like darkside lightside

Fuuuuuuuuuun!

A heck of a lot of fun. Derivative but fresh. Will revisit.

Some kinda familiar songs by a kinda familiar band. Summary must be almost memorable.

This is good! If I had heard it 20 years ago I think it would have been a fave.

Several songs that I really responded to, but also quite a bit of filler. Loved all of the instrumental breaks/solos.

I vibed with this, though I didn't love it. Some good hooks, some dumb lyrics. Definitely see the Britpop + pop punk meld of influences. Best song: Lost in You

I always forget which one Goldfinger is, then I hear it and realise it's my favourite Ash song (either that or Shining Light, anyway). This is an album made by teenagers, for teenagers, about being a teenager, which means that when it's good it buzzes with raw, youthful energy. But the songwriting is pretty inconsistent & lacks a bit of focus. I didn't actually listen to a full Ash album when I was a teenager so I can be fairly objective - no nostalgia boost from me.

Ooh leuk achtergrond album

Good album this. I love my indie and this was more grungy than a lot of the britpop around at that time. It's got that Owen Wilson loudness to it which at times is a bit ott. More rock than britpop 3.5/5

This is fine, but damn, do we really need more Britpop on here? C-

I’d say it’s a mid tier to decent emo rock sound tbh. I do like it, I’d probably give it a solid 6/10

Wish the vocals were louder in the mix. Enjoyed this record though. Nice mellow pop.

In today's edition of the UK Wish version of genre defining music we have Ash, a band that rides the grunge wave to D-level music celebrity-dom status that a casual music afficianado that was listening to this music during this time has never heard of but the authors of this list decide to let their UK favoritism take precedence rather than quality music. 2.5/5.

Not bad but not my favorite kind of music

It's alright, nothing too special though. Sort of Nirvana-lite. A lot of heavy, distorted guitar chords bunched up together tightly. It would be nice if they paid more attention to the space between the notes. 3 stars.

Several catchy songs, but nothing to suggest that this is one of the 1001 best albums of all time.

Very very good album. Have never heard of this band before or this album. Really enjoyed the whole thing! Very soft singing and really heavy riffs at some points to follow it up. Will be checking out more of this band for sure!

Pretty good. My only previous exposure to Ash was "back in the day" when MTV2 played the video for "Burn Baby Burn" which is not on this album, quite often. As a horny teenage boy I really dug those cheerleaders. I just wishbibdug this album as much. It's pretty good, but felt like it lost some appeal after a few songs.

Very 90s, loved it went first out. A few good tracks, but...I don't know, just not feeling it today

Alright

This is good garage pop. It's way better than the hives, but still not super memorable. I can easily listen to this in the background.

When I was a teenager an admirer made me a mix tape with songs to woo me with. They were songs that explained how they felt about me, about us, about the situation. Girl From Mars was on it, and to this day I’m not entirely sure it was flattering. Anyhoo, not really for me.

This got better as I listened to it. It fits very well into the punk sounds of the late '70s. Back in the 70’s and 80’s I would liked this more than I do now. But today they’re just ok. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to but I wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

Not that great

I remember getting a free tape with NME that have a version of Petrol on it and becoming a fan of Ash from that one song. Not sure if I had the EP: Trailer or not, but I know I was very excited to buy this album when it come out. And just like I felt 26 years ago when I listened then, I found this a disappointing experience. A couple of good singles and some punky energy mixed with the grungy sounds but I don’t recognise any of the album tracks at all. If think if they took a tip from some of the punk inspirations and kept the songs down to 3 mins I should maintain a 4 star rating but the noisy music and slightly out of tune vocals can’t keep me interested for more than 35mins.

rockig, grunge. Girl from Mars

Sympathetic record. I remember Goldfinger well, still a great song. Rest of the album is of variable quality.

Interesting 90s rock.

Some cool songs, but it does get repetitive in the second half.

"Girl from Mars" is Standard of indie radio for over 20 years now... it's not as bad as most indie and not as good as the height of britpop. Outside of that singles it does feel very landfill indie. "Kung Fu" just pushes it to a 3 due to nostalgia

It's standard alternative rock from the 90's. I found the album quite fine, but a bit too one dimensional. The guitars are absolutely shredding it during the whole thing and are very loud. To me this is nothing really special, not boring or anything, just a bit nondescript. It's ok 6,8/10

Kung Fu is such a great song, if this was an album of 15 Kung Fus it would be an easy 5. But it's not.

I liked it, although I’m not sure how good it actually was. Favorite song: “Goldfinger”.

Mostly underwhelming 90s indie rock. Makes me wonder if we all avoided feeling feelings in the 90s? Some of the more punk-sounding songs are fun.

Kinda fun britpoppy nonsense, although it doesn't have much lasting appeal

Back in the day i would have been all over this 3

Good energy and a lot of talent but came across to me as fairly unfocused.

Opens with a tie fighter flyby. Grungy/punky, but vocals are kinda relaxed

Very Rocky sound

The instrumentals were good but the vocals left a lot to be desired. It's like the wanted the 90s sound but as flat and unexciting as possible. I little disappointed in that since I feel like with better vocals this could have been a great album.

Album starts with a tie fighter and punk rock vibes, was super excited, then: enter the singer... Most songs on the album went that way. Music was solid, hence the 3 stars. Could have been a much better album with a stronger and more interesting lead vocalist performance.

3.5 I was shocked that is was from 1977. Seriously, I thought it was modern rock. NNED more of this!

Nice rock album, sounds a bit like green day from time to time but lacks the charm, not terrible but not crazy good 2.5/5

Nice aggressive rock, deep dive into it and you must embrace it. Great first songs but then it becomes a bit repetitive, sometimes the instrument mix dont blend well together. They try some artistic things that are sometime good sometimes not... Sot mixed about it. Very small 3.5/5

Somewhere between "Child Abuse" and "Corporate Record Company Bullshit Wank", "1977" brings a punk-pop sound that is so strikingly '90s that listening to it felt a bit nostalgic. Judging by their opener, "Lose Control", they could've made a good punk album.

I would never have thought that I will have any residual fondness for this album. Nostalgia is an odd thing. I remember reading a profile of them in Q that pretty much broke my heart. I can't remember why (hey, this was almost a quarter of a century ago!), but I'm pretty certain it was as much about what was not said as what was said in the piece. I'll look it up sometime. Remember thinking (from the grand old age of mid 20s) that they were impossibly young. The energy of the performance is what carried them through then, I think. Personally, I don't think it belongs on this list; personally, I'm sort of pleased that it is on this list.

Surely not bad, but it just doesn't really grasps me. Nothing really stands out as either outstanding or bad.

Te herbeluisteren

Sounds what a punk teenager would listen too. Sounds alright so far.

An enjoyable alt-rock LP that comes across as just a bit more radio-oriented but in the same vein as what Hum was doing around the same time. Does run a bit long for how many ideas it has to present, but a solid find from the project nonetheless.

Any album that starts with the sound of a TIE fighter is a winner in my book. Also, 1977 was the year Star Wars: A New Hope came out. This album has previously been compared to bands like Sonic Youth, which made sense to me. There's a lot of heavy guitars with catchy melodies and dirty distortion. Many of the songs balance quiet and loud, slow and fast, which was another thing that reminded me of Sonic Youth. This album felt a little generic and not particularly groundbreaking, but again, I am generally a sucker for 90s pop/rock/alt/grunge/etc., so this album finds a nice home with me. Average, but enjoyable enough.

Some good rock bordering metal? Looking forward to actually listening to this

Liked the guitar sound on this album

This was like a heavier grunge album with a taste of industrial. Not bad.

Really good alternative rock alternative from the 90s.

Mildly entertaining, though I probably won't listen to it again.

Very mid

These teenagers join the early pop punk back when it was still very much tied to power pop, but it's intensely grungy, with heavy bass and high distortion, with the biggest influencer being Sonic Youth, most obviously evident by the opening track "Lose Control." It's my genre(s) of music, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, all the middle song were forgettable, and the performances (especially vocals) were lackluster. But they did incorporate Sonic Youth's tricks really well, employing engaging non-repetitive ambience in many songs. The closing songs were fantastic, saving this score from being a 2. Those last 2 songs are such a triumphant way to end. Favorites: Lose Control, Girl from Mars, Gone the Dream, Innocent Smile, Angel Introspector, Lost in You, Darkside Lightside

The album is just kinda of there. It didn't really move the dial one way or another. The genre of music is hard to describe but probably closest to alternative rock. It is not indie music. It is not punk. It is late 90s rock, if that is a genre. I didn't hate ir. Some songs were catchy while listening to it but mostly unmemorable.

Solid 80s power pop written in the 70s. Guess that makes them a bit ground breaking.

Neither terrible nor terribly interesting, this record’s inclusion smacks of rockism. Feels pretty indistinct in the post-grunge, high-alt category – in which there were many similar bands (say the non-included Foo Fighters) circa late-90s. Editors claim they’re more original than Britpoppers, who were surely cleverer by half and much less one-note, too. There are winning moments and effects, but they get a bit lost in the excessively rock-y din (see the fade-out of “Darkside Lightside”).. Best song: “Gone the Dream,” though the Jackie Chan and “Oh Yeah” and “Lost in You” are also strong. Grading up on the curve for they were only 19, and then down because of the (really shouldn’t have been mentioned) "unmentionable" hidden track, plus they don’t seem to have done much since this impressive-ish debut.

Ok album, not memorable

I'll tell you what, this album won me over. This album art did not give me high hopes - I was getting 311 vibes and that's not a scene I dig, man. And that tie fighter sound at the top was probably a lot cooler to hear in 1996 than it is now. There aren't huge standouts here for me, but especially like some of the bigger, buzzier moments. I probably would've gone for this in '96, if I'd heard it first.

This felt a bit poppier band than I was expecting. As such, the songs needed to be shorter. (Girl From Mars, for example. It seemed to go on a good 2 or 3 choruses too long.) So the juxtaposition of the band being a bit "noisy" (in a good way. Really.) as they were playing songs that were trying to be more pop sounded is fine. But I just felt that they went too long. The songs need to be briefer, like the Hives.

Good power pop with some songs I could do without. I enjoyed it overall but kind of got tired of it after a while. In particular, I disliked Kung Fu and Innocent Smile (way too much feedback!). I was going to give the album a 4 until I encountered those tracks and after realizing I was getting tired of the album after the third listen. So, it's a 3. Favorite tracks: Lose Control, I'd Give You Anything (this one caught my attention every time I listened - very cool track).

OY I'M BWIT ISSHHHHH

Another band that somehow escaped my notice from a time when I would have been really into them. Not really into it now but this kind of grungy stuff was really in my wheelhouse back when this album was released.

Fine but nothing really that interesting about it. Didn’t suck.

Eh, I wasn't to impressed with this. I was expecting to like it a lot more. Average pop/rock album.

It could have been a 1977 album but the production is better and there are plenty of twiddly bits thrown in.

It's fine? Like, it sounds like everything else of it's era so it doesn't stand out but it's not unlistenable.

Decent rock album, though a bit forgettable.

Who are these people and why have I never heard of them? Such a classic mid-nineties sound, and I’m in heaven. I almost wish this was a 2020s album doing a throwback sound. I assume they (he) was born in 1977 (as was I). A specific, happy, fuzzy “indie” sound that instantly evokes an overexposed music video of plaid-wearing skaters and blue skies. Errs just on the wrong side of non-descript.

Fun rock album, entirely non-essential though. No idea why it's on this list. 3.5

3.5. A little harder alternative then I normally like

This album is a mix of everything happening in rock in the mid 90s. I hear aspects of grunge, pop, garage, and Britpop. It oscillates quite a bit. I hear shades of early Radiohead, some Nirvana like melodic lines, and the seeds of what sounds like pop punk. It’s perfectly fine, but I’ve heard these genres done better though the mixing is interesting.

Better than I remember!

Im familiar with Ash’s hits but first time listening to this album. A very 90’s teenage sounding album. Can see the teenage fan club influence along with the 1977 punk reference. Enjoyable and I would of loved this If I owned this as a teenager, but it does now sound like an album for teenagers made by teenagers. Good album but not as good as the bands that influenced them.

This was actually really good

Playful 90s rock. The way the guitar feedback just turns into a suspended drone in one of the songs was gnarly.

Good thing that I waited to hear this one once I was able to enjoy it, it was a nice surprise, very alternative and catchy.

Fairly solid hard rock with some punk influences. Interesting sound on some tracks but pretty paint by numbers overall.

I liked this a lot better than I thought I would, for an album I hadn't heard of and whose first note was a bit cacophonous :) The songs I liked best were Goldfinger, Girl From Mars, Let It Flow, and Angel Interceptor.

Genre: Power Pop 3/5 A fun little piece of pop punk/power pop/alt rock, whatever you want to call it. This feels like an incredibly random add, and I’m sure I can think of a few albums, even in this genre, that would’ve made more sense in this book, but it wasn’t a disappointing album, by any means. The peppiness of the whole record is quite infectious, but it never gets more than good. Goldfinger and Girl from Mars were pretty good, but that’s as far as it gets in terms of standouts.
