Reviews (page 7 of 7)

I've never heard of Ash or this album before, but I've enjoyed a lot of the albums from Europe that came out in the nineties, so I expect to enjoy this album. Overall, I found this album pretty bland and forgettable. The guitar playing is good, but for me, it wasn't enough to really garner my interest. The songwriting wasn't particularly interesting to me either. I felt that the album worked more as it branched out later on, from "Innocent Smile" to the final track. But by that time, I'd already listened to eight other songs that were fairly run of the mill as far as rock songs go. I felt like those last four songs worked because they kept the punk influences, but added some other sounds that added a lot of depth and uniqueness to things. This album wasn't bad, but I don't think it's necessarily worthy of being one of the 1001 albums I needed to listen to before I died. Also, I made it about two minutes into the hidden track "Sick Party" before I had to shut it off. I feel like I deserve a medal for that.

Not my cup of tea.

This is like a not as good dinosaur jr. This band would definitely be playing at the Bronze (I just started watching Buffy the vampire slayer so for those who know you know). Very 90's.

I want sure if this would get a pass. Reasonable chunky riffs but pretty weedy vocals. Then I reached Let It Flow. That's the most irritatingly nasal vocal I've heard in a long time.

Never heard of them. And then I knew the second song. Not offensive but nothing special

Nothing interesting here.

This is bullshit. At this point I think this list is just including first 1001 records they picked at random from a music store. Like this record is just... it's just... music? There isn't anything original on here that every human with ears hasn't heard before. Presently, or even back then. I see they are Irish. Is that why? We don't have enough Irish representation or something? I think I'd have more respect for this record if it wasn't musically WORSE. At least then it would stick out. Who the hell wants to hear this when they could listen to Weezer, Oasis, or any other 90s alt pop rock band. This list should include the best representation of every sound. Not the 99th "best record" of this sound. (I'm looking at you Beatles rip off bands too!)

Not for me, too noisy.

Not doing it for me at all

its so meh. it was such a boring listen because of how samey it sounded all throughout the album. i dont think any of the songs except some at the start brought anything to the table. lose control and girl from mars were both ok, but the rest were pretty abominable. even back half track run as just background noise became close to unbearable by angel interceptor. yeah, just not a fan of this one. 2 personal favs: lose control

Shoegaze going grunge? OR grunge going Shoegaze? Either way it is not very exciting retrospectively

This album likes to skirt the line between punk rock, cutesy pop, and metal/industrial music, and it’s to its detriment. If a song has cool instrumentals, it’ll be accompanied by cutesy “she likes me, she likes me not” type of lyrics. The good parts of the album were when it stayed in its lane and didn’t ruin it with lyrics. It felt mind numbing. Oh Yeah, Kung Fu, and Girl From Mars especially. Some bad songs had cool sounds, but it never redeemed them. Standouts: Goldfinger and Innocent Smile.

Ash have three good songs, and none of them are on this album. If this was a local band when I was a teenager, they’d probably have been one of the best on the scene, but this album cannot compete on any higher level than that. Thinking about it, loads of my friends’ bands were better than this. If we’re all honest with each other Tim Wheeler’s no singer is he. Ah well.

Mid and forgettable. Sounded generic and similar to the rest of the 90s alt rock whatever. Nothing to write home about. Was going to give a 3 for at least being on the list but the next to the last song killed it. Ballad-ish bullshit that doesn’t fit with the rest. Knocked you down to a 2, gents

Fairly generic, apart from one song I recognised the rest blended together into a bit of a blur

Not awful. But nothing special. Just another UK club band taking up space on this project.

I think there are some good songs on this album, but I really dislike the way the pop is melded in. Songs like "Girl from Mars" are just not something I appreciate or want to listen to. I do think the first couple songs have a great energy and vibe, and there are some good guitar sounds throughout, but even though I could imagine finding other albums by this band I might like, this album wouldn't be one.

Nope. I knew from the first refrain this album isn't for me. There's nothing here new or interesting or superlative; this album has no place on this list.

Some is good.

This album hits somewhere between punk and pop to me, but the music never comes together enough to be memorable, and the lyrics are fairly week.

One hit wonders that i never got into in the 90's

Generic britpop

Meh, again what is the relevance of this album

I can see why some people might like this, but I am not one of them. Whiny vocals with generic rock backing. 4/10 (2/5)

Nothing to grab onto here

I listened to this but am left with little to say about it. Even while I was playing it, I just wasn't moved in any direction. All this is to say that I don't think it's worthy of the list.

Day62 - this is the most 90’s generic rock. silverchair or the toadies would have been a better pick.

I remember Girl From Mars and Oh Yeah from this (but curiously have no recollection of the other singles, even though they were seemingly more popular than Oh Yeah at least). It's not brilliant really, it's a precursor to the load of bands that did this stuff better in the early 2000s. Was it influential? Not sure, but it's not really good enough in its own right to make the list. Also, the singer can't really sing outside a narrow range, which is fine when you've got the loud guitars driving the songs, but there are a couple of ballads on here which are a really tough listen. 2/5, singles aren't good enough to elevate it.

Some scratchy guitar noises and solos sounded good. The rest of the album is bad. Not one song is catchy enough to overcome the basic drumming. How do people think this is good?

Hard rock/ punk not really my style

I am missing the appeal …

This album is like if an AI were to analyse my music taste and create an album that is a textbook example of what I would listen to. And I must say, I don't like it. Like I said it is very typical of the sound I usually go out of my way to listen to, but it's just a very generic watered down version of that. There is very little that makes this album even remotely interesting. Just generic 90s rock that sounds good in the moment due to it being very typical of that sound, but when you analyse the music in this album to even the smallest level of depth, you start to realise how uninteresting it actually is.

Nothing special

This could have been a passable album.. if the vocalist was actually able to sing.

Not unique. All the songs sounded the same with vocals washed out by the instrumental. Some good songs, but not enough to make me a fan.

Fine. Completely inoffensive, really. Hard to get on board with the idea that this is one of the 1001 most important albums of all time. It’s like blander early Weezer. Thinking of some of the artists and albums I already know aren’t on this list, compared to…This? I listened to it once, I didn’t hate myself, I’ll probably never listen to it again.

Meh indie meh

5/10 - Decent workout album - Wouldnt pick it over something else Heavier Alternative rock album Some grunge influence Some grunge influence

Favorite Tracks: Girl From Mars Goldfinger Kung Fu

Loud. Boisterous. Says little.

Boring slice of late 90s alt-rock, not much to recommend a second listen here.

Some interesting ideas on this album, but I felt it never really came together. It seemed inspired to be more interesting than a melodic alt-pop record, but never seemed to achieve either. Girl from Mars is a bop, and I think the right mix of what they were going for between melody, pop, and more interesting instrumentality.

Odd that I have NEVER heard this before. . . It is mediocre Brit-pop and a little too dated. . . This is an odd inclusion in a finite list of albums. . .

Honestly, I can't believe Luke said they are one hit wonders, that guy is an IDIOT HOLE. Jokes aside, this was boring.

Sounds off key.

Not significant or important or even good enough for this list. Also, without Spotify, impossible to find online. Who cares, Ash?

Fairly underwhelming but not without its moments. Very of its era. Fav track: Let it flow 2.5/5

Mom can we stop on the way home for some Pinkerton? We have Pinkerton at home Pinkerton at home: Meandering and mostly unmemorable songs. late 90s dorm room rock without the hook that the genre is known for (not for lack of trying). The snare sound is an absolute gunshot and objectively well produced yet sticks out like a sore thumb in some songs and pulls me out of the music. Vocals are mixed generously underneath everything, which I understand is a stylistic choice but I believe to be the wrong one for this type of music. Decent enough vocals but just very plain and again, unmemorable. The lead guitarist sounds desperate to be in a hair metal band but is a prisoner of the decade he was born into. The lead guitar however is the saving grace for alot of these songs, great solos and added textures give bland song writing a dash of interesting. The album starts out promising with a promising Hot Snakes type of energy but devolves into a half attempt at the charming, artistic, frat boy style that Weezer has perfected. A couple songs capture this and breathe life into the album but they are too few to keep it from flatlining. A run of three songs near the end of the album are great but tough to get all the way through to. Starts to sound more like a flaming lips record near the end with more complex production elements that lend themselves greatly with the type of quick switch songwriting deployed Standout tracks: Innocent Smile Angel interceptor Lost in You

I dont know - 90's garage rock or something? It's fine. I dont like it.

Not a fan

They had their heart in the right place, and they were in the right place, but luck sometimes is the only way to survive. Nowadays, it is only an outdated 90s band.

DIdn't get the Full album, got a collectors edition with 40 odd tracks, couldn't stand it mostly had to cut it. Few nicer tracks.

Another okay, probably would’ve liked it in 2017-type of pop punk album. It was a decent listen and I like the instrumentals but overall not the most interesting. No song really stuck out as a favourite.

This album reminded me of a soggy dish rag. A little edgy, but ultimately pretty mundane. Somehow I did own an Ash album in my teens, although not this one. Their brand of Britpop/pop-punk is a little less clever, a little less hooky than some of their peers. What is the single here? There was no standout, I almost fell asleep despite the crunchy guitars. I assume that once again the author has favored a nostalgic album from his youth.

just why. dull et monotone. Specially les sujets de chanson. 4/10

Trur kje detta va for meg. Girl From Mars va litt jævlig

I'm sure I listened to this then forgot. I'll take that as a clue.

Power pop. Rollo. Un 2.

Very bleh 90s rock

Didn't hate this, but I forget what it even sounded like after two days, so that probably says it all.

Man, this was boring. Interesting things here and there, but the album is overall not notable. I remembered the singer's voice being more annoying, but I guess I misremembered the one song I knew on here. My favourite songs were Lose Control and Goldfinger, but nothing was very appealing to me.

Lose Control, Goldfinger, Angel Interceptor and Lost in You. Generic British indie pop rock. Guitar is good in parts. Kind of annoying and didn’t like most of this but it does what it’s supposed to and is catchy.

not as good as the first song promises. a lot of the songs sound the same. i liked it less as it went on. the singer is cheeks. disappointing. 2.5 lose control

Bland boring garage noise rock. FS: Lost in You

There are some good tunes here, but the album is messy, too long and from one of the 90s B tier bands

Power pop. Rollo. Un 2.

its alright kinda repetitive

Not very memorable for me. Didn't hate it, but it did not make a lasting impression

This just feels like another mid-late-90s band riding the coattails of grunge’s surge earlier in the decade. Not bringing much new and sounding very derivative.

Never heard of this band before. Was drawn in my the heavy guitars, but the singer whining about his failed love life or whatever was a real turn off. Two broken hearts out of five 💔💔

Nah, ik vind de stem maar niets

Never heard of them before. Doesn't seem like anything special. The lyrics seemed pretty silly at times.

Who gave this man a microphone and told him to sing into it? It’s a worse Nirvana (who I don’t even like that much) with unintelligible lyrics, atrocious vocals, more noise, and worse melodies. 3/10

90s cookie cutter grunge pop. Completely forgettable.

Maybe the best album open sound ever. Past that. It was ok-ish.

A very standard 90s rock album. Not sure how these make it onto the 1001 list, but I guess you gotta fill it somehow!

The Girl from Mars ....sounds familiar. and yet not enough. Oh Yeah, its just that it reminds me of average. (I figured it out) Its distinctive for its lack of distinctively-ness-ness. Its like demin, or noodles, it needs something to go with it, so its not boring...

There are a couple of bangers in here (the opener kicks things off with a whole load of energy) and Lost In You is a genuinely sweet song, but otherwise it's quite middle of the road, forgettable indie rock

First songs sound nice, a bit like nirvana. But either this album gets more boring the more you listen to it, or it gets worse towards the end.

Would be a great album...if he didn't sing Some really good rock riffs Some real dirgy songs

Blah, blah, blah...yawn...guitars, guitars, guitars...yawn. This did not hit the right spot for me today. Just a droning noise for the most part.

A mix of some of the more unpleasant sides of rock. Not sure why this band ever made out of the garage or out of the local opening act league. The album is versatile, I'll give it that. And nothing is reeeeally bad as in painful to listen to. But none of it is good in any way either. I'd Give You Anything in particular made me sort of sad. Ripping off riffs from Black Sabbath (MIB) is one thing thing, but how can you then proceed to make it sound that bad?

Boring, forgettable 90s rock.

Pretty much one in a sea of a thousand bands that sounded just like this in the 90's. If it had been made in 1977, that at least would be noteworthy. I really don't understand how this album represents anything that I haven't heard already.

I did not enjoy the lyrics or the vocals of this. Instrumentally it was fine but it’s forgettable

I remember some of these songs from the time. I avoided Ash then and nothing much has changed. It’s pleasant-enough indie rock, and I get the Dinosaur Jr. / Teenage Fan Club comparisons, but Buzzcocks and Sonic Youth? Although I can hear a smattering of the latter in their flirtation-with-corporate-grunge-rock Goo / Dirty phase, I guess. I am sure they had fun doing this stuff, but it washed over me as nostalgia for a 90s I managed to swerve.

Forgettable.

Very mid

Teen indie pop. Decent enough for what it is, but not something I’d really listen to.

Bit of nostalgia for me, not stupendous though.

What is it about '90s Britpop that bores me so much? Maybe it's just its utter mediocrity? I can't say for sure, but every time I hear it my mind immediately shuts off. Maybe it's a defense mechanism. Maybe I should harness this phenomenon for good. When my anger or anxiety starts to get the better of me, I can just throw on some Ash or Suede and let the banality wash it all away. It's worth a shot.

Nothing special 2.5

I listened to it. I don't remember much.....

ah, not a terrible album but not a terribly interesting one. i gave this album a few listens yet it just came across as boring. unfortunately, i don't even have much to comment on. to end positively, i certainly appreciate how the album title came about! i think it's a fitting and unique title.

I was totally unfamiliar with this album. Ash were obviously a tight outfit. It seemed to be all about the guitars. I really liked I’d Give You Anything - the guitars on this track were outstanding. But I found the rest of it samey & it really didn’t hold my interest.

So generic and bland

This is a very 90's album cover, it hinted to me that this was maybe a grunge or post-grunge album. But okay, we got some power Britpop, sure. I don't understand the rationale or connection to 1977? The title doesn't fit what the album actually is. There are some catchy rock/pop tunes here. It's a bit like Belle and Sebastian with some nerve, but not a lot of nerve. The vocals are too soft and wispy for my liking, they are often overwhelmed by the music and hard to hear. As a lyrics first listener that's just not going to work for me.

Didn't resonate me. Sounds like any generic alternative or pop-punk sad boy music from the 90s. It had some moments but overall quite boring.

Not the worst album this list forced me to endure (sadly, there’s an ever growing list of such abominations), but: Despite my undeniable affection to the sound of distorted guitars, I have to file this one under “nothing special”.

Yet more bland UK alt-rock, sounds exactly like the most generic parts of every 90s music scene rolled into one - and I LIKE the 90s, so this really doesn't have much going for it. Unremarkable in every way. Thankyou Robert Dimery, your dedication to subjecting anyone who buys this book to countless shitty UK bands is commendable. 2/5.

Sounds like generic mid 90s rock. Cross between Oasis and Lit? A few ok songs, but nothing special.

Crazy distorted instrumentals and a singer sounding like off brand rivers cuomo

I did not like this. Very repetitive, and difficult to listen to,

Never heard of Ash. For the first time listening it was very enjoyable. 2.5/5 for now.

2.3 - Reasonably catchy music, but still too noisy for my wheelhouse. No individual songs really stand out, and the album ends on a lower note than it begins.

Legit sounds like a battle of the bands generic type band, even including the bad singing. Completely forgettable and average. 5/10.

The first fifteen minutes of 1977 had me thinking Ash were nought but a Nirvana rip-off. I'm still not certain: Don't exactly love the record. But that assessment was unfair, the sequencing is exceptionally smooth, and the stolen melodic techniques are the good kind. It's a bit long and the musical range is made to make sense but not to mean. Strongish but inessential.

Girl from Mars is great, the rest forgettable. If back ground music is your thing then dive on in. Not something I'd listen to again.

Straightforwardmiddleoftheroadunabashepunkrockinwhingyangst. Not for me, but also not sure who for. Critics say it was 'catchy' but beg to differ. No real highlights, no real shining moments, no real anything really.

A lot like the Bangles except not as charming

Mushy mix, alternative/punk sound.

A few good songs but no masterpiece

There were some aspects I enjoyed and I felt that the album had potential, but for the most part it was quite bad.

What a relief. I thought my sense of taste was going after I enjoyed Travis, but thankfully I found this to be fairly drab middle of the road rock. The lyrics were indecipherable amongst all the guitar noodling.

It was ok, but not a repeat listen for me

Nothing special at all

Nice to listen to, but everything is a bit of same.

Ken betere in dit genre. Waarom staat dit album in deze lijst?

not bad, definately not good either.

2.6 - The sort of anonymous 90s rock that would've appeared on the soundtrack for a high school coming-of-age comedy. Very thin on vocals with flabby shoegaze-type guitars. A couple of pretty tracks ("Oh Yeah", "Gone the Dream") but overall forgettable and inessential.

Definitely feels like a record from 96. A pop band trying to ape the sounds of great underground bands but in a much more commercial style. It's like another version of Creed or something. Girl from Mars is straight-up sugar pop with a layer of distortion added on top. Some tracks (Lost in You) are just straight up bad. They occasionally sound a lot like bands that I love and some of the guitar work is enjoyable but the whole thing is just kind of offensive and feels very calculated / inauthentic. Would never put this on a list of albums you have to hear before you die. Nothing here should be a requirement for anyone - go listen to the bands this group is imitating.

Interesting but too hard for my liking.

Nah. More punk-ness and I just am learning I do not care for that style. I love the energy of it, but the vocals and freneticism just don't work for me.

not a huge punk fan

Not my cup of tea

Bubble gum rock?

Not my style

When all bands had to play in a run down industrial state warehouse and puddles lots and lots of puddles

meh, not my go to grunge band

2/5 better stick to pokemon

Niets buitengewoons

odd mix of britpop and grunge that manages to be less interesting than the sum of its parts. as if the gallagher were less talented and listened to too much nirvana but didn't understand it. a product of its time i guess. and if it were 1996 i'd probably have liked it. as it is, i didn't hate it but can't imagine ever wanting to revisit.

Not really my thing but not bad. It sounds like if Elliot Smith was in a rock band

this was not for me

more whiny than nirvana

Hence 1.996 points

I am feeling generous 2/5

Meh. Standard 90s bland rock

Read up a bit on this before listening as I hadn't heard of this one. Expected to hate it but on first listen it's alright. Definitely has some catchy pop hooks. Hearing all the influences listed in the descriptions. About 1/3 of the way through it's starting to wear thin for me though. Don't like the songs with string arrangements at all - seems unnecessary. "Kung Fu" is plain dumb. Can't believe it was a hit. Their music is kinda like junk food. It tastes good at first but if you try to make a meal out of it, it'll make you sick.

Meh. Below-average punk-rock. A bit cheesy for me. I've heard "Girl From Mars", which is ok. It's fine but does not a whole lot.

I didn't quite like it even thought it's 90s garage rock / grunge which I should at least enjoy a little. But something was off and I didn't.

Nothing memorable at all

Standard 90's pop rock, gets pretty grating about 4 songs in.

No, others have done it better

Wow this was really mediocre - label scrapping the bottom of the barrel for anything that vaguely sounded pop punk

No me gusta este estilo de rock

Not good

I tried. This is one of those bands with a mediocre “band”, and a tone deaf singer. How they for a record deal and ended up in this list, nobody knows. I gave it a solid shot. Can’t stand the voice! It’s like the band your friends in grade 9 made. Listen again: nope Purchase for my collection: never Favourite Song: none

intense irritation

Not for me

Temu-Weezer.

Only 50 albums in or so, but I feel at this point I already know every crappy "alternative" rock album from the 90s

Not the biggest fan of this one. Was hard to pick a favourite song as didn’t particularly enjoy any of them. Added dark side light side to my playlist for this one

I like the music way more than the vocals. Lead singers voice is a bit weak and doesn’t always measure the intensity of the guitars and drums. His voice on Oh Yeah, when he attempts to sing higher than his voice can manage, is cringe-worthy.

90's rock in general is pretty dire. This specifically is dire.

Pretty ordinary. Just noise

Didn’t like the music. It’s a no dog

can't say i enjoyed any of this.

Gone the dream var rätt okej. Ligger o väger mellan 1-2.

Not a great album. Sounds like the precursor to the pop punk wave that came after. Or maybe it was happening all at once. I don’t know. It captures that vibe but also has early 90s guitar and drum tones. 1.6/5.0

Bright, adrenaline-fueled songs built from Crunchy, overdriven guitars with simple power-chord riffs, melodic forward-pushed bass lines, driving drums, and exuberant, youthful vocals move this pop-punk album like tearing down a suburban street on a skateboard that’s a little too fast—thrilling and catchy for a moment, and waiting for it to be over.

First song is good enough to make you think the album will be good, but not good enough to save the rest of this clusterfuck. Painfully boring slop. Genuinely the worst listening experience so far. Why is this in this list??

My day was going pretty well until I listened to this album. Another droning British alt 90s grinding guitar album. I read in the notes that this album is similar to Weezer but I detest Weezer. I don’t understand why these bands can’t put just a bit of melody in their songs.

i give it points for trying but this was so boring LMFAO

Was making good music illegal in the 90s? The vocals are impossible to hear and the music itself is less remarkable than a cube of ice. How is this on the list and not Oingo Boingo?

couldn't find it

Not for me first one I had to turn off and not listen to fully

Sounds like bad weezer

Absolute mediocrity

Whatever this 'wall of electric guitar noise' genre is is very much not for me. There is nothing in the melody I can grasp on to and enjoy. The lyrics are also extremely unimaginative. This is also one of those albums that make me so glad I can avoid the radio now.

Every song sounds the same.

Too many affectations and weird guitar effects to make this a serious effort. They distract from the overall feel and stall the sound in the 90's pigeonhole. Also, it chugs along too much for my personal tastes.

Not for me

Got to track 4 before I quit because it became headache-inducing noise

I don’t like the cover. Looks like a shittie 90s band. Sounds like a shittie 90s band I don’t like the guitar sound The voice is ok.

Didn’t like it

A pastiche of 90s sounds here. Some moments are clearly Sonic Youth, or Nirvana, or Pixies, sometimes in quick succession. But the core sound is a low-talent college band. The singer is especially under-accomplished. Not impressed at all by this album. Why wasn't a better band given this opportunity?

First- this was a 65 track album. Not no hell no. Especially 65 songs of Ash

Not for me

Just a lame 90s alt album, surprised it made this list. Not really anything to write home about.

This album is completely forgettable; the band name, album name, cover art, and music do nothing to distinguish themselves in any way. Super generic with lame attempts at sounding like a a bunch of different bands that do it better. It was like a watered-down version of Weezer meets The Offspring. I emptied the ashtray into the trash(tray). 1.5 for punch sound effects on "Kung Fu" but minus .5 for saying Jackie Chan's name with tacky "uh uh uh uh oh" after it brings 1977 in at 1.45.

A 90's irish pop punk rock album with a handful of singles? Seemed like something that I would enjoy so I went into this hoping I might be introduced to a new band. I was surprised how much of a miss this was for me. Maybe there is something more buried in this but I felt like I was hit with a bunch of generic rock songs that had too much reverb and distortion so it kinda drowned out any of the detail. I didn't dig the vocal style in any way and can't tell you anything about the supporting instrumentals. After 30 mins I was mostly tuned out just trying to get through it. I'd never heard of Ash before and there is no reason for me to revisit them after this. On paper I feel like I should have enjoyed this but after a listen this is a skippable album for me. 1.28 stars

This shit literally almost killed me, 'innocent smile' my ass

Not for me.

Money for nothing and chicks for free... wer wäre nicht gerne dabei gewesen.

I used to own this. And on re-listening to this after about 20 years I had the same feeling I had when I decided to sell my physical copy back then. This album starts with one or two songs that really kick you. And then the songs get gradually worse and boring and the singer's vocals really annoying and... Dare I say off-key?

The first song has a progression that sounds like it’s ripped straight from “Polly.” This sounds like if you asked AI for a song that meshes Nirvana with, I don’t know, Bush, you’d get this dreck.

D-tier 90s alt rock. Distorted hard rock guitars with wah-wah solos, pseudo-Oasis vocals heavy churning mid-tempo rhythm section pounding along. Not bad exactly, but at best a passable imitation of better bands from the era. Hard to imagine much less essential listening really. Favorite: Innocent Smile

I think it’s a first for me a couple of hundred albums in…I hated this! The singer’s voice was grating and whiny, and the music and arrangements just irritated me consistently across multiple tracks. Just not for me.

The best Jackie Chan themed song I have ever heard. The entire album sounds ad libbed. The singer uses the word “you” so much that you would die if you did a drinking game everytime he says it. Aggressively mediocre. Add this to the list of “albums not to listen to before you die”. 2/10

another really strong 1.

A few catchy riffs, but not very good or memorable otherwise. Unfortunately generic

Just no...

Here’s the thing. This sound was totally played out by the time this came out. It was tired already. The only people listening still were frat boys. It was top 40 junk. There’s no soul in this music. It’s empty. Sounds like Pavement and I wouldn’t put them on a list like this either.

This was the first album I fully did not like listening to. Bland and uninspired rock sound, terrible vocals, and annoyingly repetitive melodies. Walmart Weezer.

Poppy alternative rock. Oasis, Jesus and Mary Chain (90s), etc. I don't see anything essential here, nor would I revisit the album. This was probably dated when it came out.

Is this Jeff Tweedy singing on the first song? Sure sounds like him. The album is strongly rooted in 1996-era smooth grunge. Not doing anything for me. 1/5.

Oh yeah, Star Wars. I recognise quite a few of the song names on this record. Noisy mess, and not in the good way. I can 100% believe this was written and performed by teenagers. You don't need to hear this before you die, I don't think I will ever listen to this again. 1 / 5 stars.

these guys are on tour during march thank god I dont live in england 1.5/5

Pretty unlistenable. Songs are so weak and derivative that it is difficult to imagine why this album has such a good reputation.

Bland 90s sound with super weak vocals

Music for 12 year olds. Sadly I couldn't finish it.

Listens: 1 Enjoyed: No

I made it as far as "Oh Yeah" before deciding it just wasn't going to get better. C- or D+.

I hated this

05/10/2022 Another one that's just not for me. This project is really ruining my Spotify recommendations, lol.

This is what happens when parents stay together.

No wonder I had never heard of this band or album

It was about average, the only song I actually sort of liked was Girl from Mars. 1/5 stars from me.

This sounded like so many different artists. As each song came on, we looked at each other and said, “oh, this reminds me of a different song by a better band that I really like.” It might be more listenable with less whiney vocals. But unfortunately, those vocal choices were made and be taken back. We agreed that if it came onto the alt rock radio station, we would change the channel. Occasionally, we mistook it for the ads on YouTube.

No thanks, if they played in he garden I’d draw the curtains
