Reviews (page 5 of 7)

I’m down with this but not overly so. I feel like the musicianship is sloppy, but maybe that’s the point

Music is alright but these guys are seriously unfunny with their live stuff

- nice Songs dabei

Sounds foundational. Cool sounds and can def see how this led to much more.

Got this after some pathos-heavy early 1970s Elton John. Couldn't have been more delighted.

This was alright, short and sweet since I just listened to the original release. Probably not something I'll be putting on much though.

reallllllllly long

Not too bad, kinda punk/rocky? An alternative album from 1988. Maybe a low 3 so far.

Remember my middle school boyfriend Sam Peters? His dad is the OG drummer. I liked this! Reminds me of Nirvana’s debut, which makes sense.

Just the other day saw a very special appearance by Mudhoney in the classic 1996 masterpiece "Black Sheep." Some fine acting there. Man, this one really does take me back; fresh outta high school & ready to slack. We coined the term "Unk Runk" right around this time, which I still think is more befitting than "Grunge." Will always like my Stooges-inspired rock with a little less metal, but I can still bug out to it.

I'm not the biggest fan of grunge, but I gotta admit it's pretty cool seeing a lesser known pioneer of the genre straight out of Seattle's underground scene on the list. Can be sonically interesting sometimes like during the guitar solos in Mudride.

That was fun

Never listened to this band, but not bad.

Listened to it. Won’t again, but I’ve endured worse. Got a bit repetitive but that’s grunge rock.

Faves: Touch Me I'm Sick, In 'n' Out of Grace

I get why this was influential but it just doesn’t really do it for me. I guess there is a reason Nirvana went stratospheric. And over 2 hours of this stuff? Absolutely no need. I gave up when I got to work about 100 mins in

really good grunge before it became a huge thing.

I wasn't super vibing with it but god damn was this short. That's always a nice relief.

I really wanted to love this, but I don't. Despite hearing their influence on some of my favorite artists, like Nirvana, Helmet, Gruntruck, Soundgarden, etc, I just could not get into it like I had hoped. I favorited the song "No One Has", but that was it.

not much punkish/grunge rock person but cool to see who paved way for bands like nirvana.

classic stuff

Energetic, and fun to listen to. Sounded like early grunge/90s rock.

Thought this was going to be a grind to listen to but there were several tracks that turned my head. Enjoyable dirty rock.

I love a bit of grunge rock and so it was pretty cool to hear this album by Mudhoney (a band I don’t think I’d heard of) The whole Seattle rock scene of the late 80s/ early 90s is pretty legendary! I think I could revisit it when I’m in the mood, but today it was just way too long and messy - I listened to about half the album while I was working and took note of the song title I was up to so I could come back and finish it later - only to discover ‘mudride’ seems like it’s on the album about 10 times! If I feel like listening to a less good version of Nirvana I know where to go

Some of these albums I wish had a little justification as to why Some of these albums I wish had a little justification as to why they're on the 1001 albums list. It's and ok album and may be significant to the formation of the grunge in the 90s, so that is pretty cool. Having the entire decade that followed in front of me doesn't help this album stand out to what came after, particularly if we're going off the EP and not counting the re-releases. Overall ok album, better as a history note than a frequent listen. Favorite track "If I think" 2.5/5 on the 1001 albums list. It's and ok album and may be significant to the formation of the grunge in the 90s, so that is pretty cool. Having the entire decade in front of me doesn't help this album stand out to what came after.

Not only is this very good, it came out in 1988? I'm impressed. I had heard of Mudhoney but never listened to them or looked at their timeline and history. The album leans hard toward the grunge sound before grunge had a name or a mainstream identity.

Almost a 4, vocals were off for me though

Will listen again

Mudhoney's 1988 EP might have loud and varied riffs for days but overall, I can't say I'm a fan of the vocals on this album. There is something muted about about the way they're delivered which doesn't blend well with the louder, distorted instrumentation. The song "No One Has" has an incredibly hypnotic loop, drenched in distortion which is enjoyable when it's at the forefront, but I can't get with Mark's vocals personally here. The exception to this is the song "If I Think" where he rides the slower and louder parts of the song very well and the song closes out with one of my favorite parts of the EP. I like the slower, trudging, hypnotic nature of the guitars in the opening part of "Mudride" with the almost tribal drum pattern that drives it forward. The guitar passage near the middle is cacophonous, and another one of the highlights of this EP. Probably my favorite song here. Overall, the instrumentation here is the highlight, the guitar riffs are generally hypnotic and paint a dreary atmosphere that's parts macabre but also stimulating. I also really like the drum work. Overall though, I can't say I found anything special in this EP but it's a solid piece of grunge rock nonetheless. *I haven't had my deep dive into grunge rock nor its history but assuming this record came out in '88, I can only imagine its fusions of punk ethos with slower, growly vocals influenced many of the 90s grunge bands that I am familiar with. Maybe I'll grow to appreciate this album more for what it is as I continue this journey. 6/10

long! but cool

Average grunge album.

#114. It was fuzzy. It was muffled. They delivered on all promises. What more can you want? 3/5: good job.

Quick and energetic. Not sure why the deluxe adds a movie’s length of tracks

basically grunge before grunge was a thing. pretty cool to listen to an album that had obvious influence on a major musical movement. highlights: “chain that door”, “no one has”, “in ‘n’ out of grace”.

Not bad, just not my style

Absolutely fine grunge. I enjoyed it, but not vastly. On my own in the kitchen whilst doing some work was not the correct listening environment.

My final rating will take into account the little 6-song EP only, but I think today’s going to be Mudhoney day, as I try to figure out why this band from Seattle has as many albums on this list as Elton John. Hence I’ll check out some bonus tracks, and also revisit EBGDF (1991), album #39 on my journey. I’m glad I listened to it more than once, as I started to hear the honey through the mud. Not really my idea of fun, but there’s enough energy & crunchy riffs to make it worthwhile, as well as the clear influence on 90’s alt-rock. HL: “Need”, “No One Has”, “If I Think”, “Touch Me I’m Sick” (bonus), "Halloween" (bonus, a Sonic Youth cover :0) January 17, 2024 P.S. A relisten of EGBDF, their 1991 full-length, was a relief in a way. I thought it was gone from my memory because it was mediocre, but turns out it's because I heard it 3 years ago & it's part of a genre I had very little interest in at the time. I'd say it's even more enjoyable than Superfuzz Bigmuff. (s/o to "Fuzzgun '91", "Pokin' Around" and "Good Enough")

I mean, if you like mudhoney’s approach to the wall of sound. Personally could never get past the vocals

Not bad not great, kind of repetitive - 2,5 if I could

I've heard worse. No idea how this band got 2 albums on the list. Looking at the entry in the book, this album is only 21 minutes and six songs long. Don't make the same mistake as me and listen to the 2 hour deluxe edition.

Hyvää grungea, tätä olisi voinut LP:nkin kuunnella.

Ihan kelpo grungelevy, mut genre ei koskaan puhutellut yhtä paljon kuin menevämmät punk- ym. rallit. 3/5

Pleasantly surprised by this album. It's like a more evolved punk.

Actually enjoyed this more than I thought it would. I prefer this kind of sound over Nirvana to be honest.

I'm not averse to this at all, some songwriting beneath the slackerdom and noise.

Superfuzz Bigmuff by Mudhoney was a cool listen to some early style grunge/garage punk, I would describe as a mix between Nirvana and Green Day in terms of energy and overall sound as it sits nicely in the middle genre-wise between the two bands. Best: Touch Me I'm Sick Worst: Need Note: Spotify had the deluxe album, I only listened to the 12 tracks as outlined in "Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles (1990)" on the Wikipedia page.

On a music festival with the sun out and 5 beers down this could be great. Sitting behind my desk with a cup of tea not so much.

A lot of it sounds similar but it is decent

My impression from the first bars left me at a *hard no*. Once my ears adjusted, my impression was that it could have been worse.

I liked it fine. Listenable and interesting that it came out earlier than I might have expected. Not terrible (except for The Rose remake), but no great revelations to me here.

Schönes Garage-Punk-Geschrabbel mit ordentlich Energie.

Proto-grunge and obviously a huge influence on the Seattle bands that would soon follow. In your face distortion is the order of the day here, and if you don't like that then your in for a fairly miserable ride here.

Rating: 7/10 Very good EP (only reviewed from Need to In n Out of Grace on the deluxe album on Spotify). I really like the energy and the guitar tones, the raw production really fits the music. Definitely an influential album, I hear the influences on grunge and alternative rock of the 90s here. I think a lot of the groups that came after them did their sound a bit better, still an enjoyable listen. Favorite songs: Need, Mudride, In n Out of Grace. Worst song: Chain that Door.

For me this feels like a tad louder Nirvana, although Nirvana was catchier. Still they're very energetic songs and pretty great at that! 7,5 out of 10

It has the grunge elements that make an othwerwise exceptional band. However, it does not have a Layne, Kurt, or Eddie. And that, my friend, it what separates the monsters from the men.

Good grunge. Bit too grungy in places

Grunge is my favourite genre, I've been listening to every grunge band I've been able to find, ever since I was a kid. But Mudhoney has always been the one that I've never really been able to sink my teeth into. There's an artistry in pure noise and emotion, and I respect it, but I just can't listen to a dozen straight tracks of the same noise over and over. The only song of theirs I have saved on Spotify is a cover of Fang's "The Money Will Roll Right In." I like a few Green River songs, but that's where my connection to these guys ends. Wish I liked them more, but it's not for me.

ooh already a great garage rock album. super fuzzy and touch me i'm sick i'm sure will set the tone for the whole album. immediate vibes of coachwhips and what would later inspire ty segall and oh sees (thee oh sees). Good predecessor to the 90’s Alt/grunge era

fine album, a few bangers actually, a few duds. ~3

Obviously influential on all the grunge artists I love, but I’ve never explored them or felt compelled to. This was alright. I should like it more than I do on paper, but maybe I’m just too old now to discover new grunge.

Classic alternative album although not my favorite from this era

A super short EP (6 songs long). No idea why they went for something like this instead of an actual LP, but alright. It's pretty good. Obviously not a "full album experience" or anything - mostly just felt like listening to a super short grunge playlist. Not much substance or cohesion, but still packing some enjoyable tunes.

suprisingly cohesive

Mudride // If I Think //

It would really fucking help if whoever decides what goes on Spotify other streaming services are available) could avoid only putting deluxe versions of albums on there. I'm usually downloading these at 5:30 in the morning and don't have time to curate a playlist and check what the fuck I'm actually supposed to be listening to. I listened to this ages ago and disliked it because it was just too much. The 22 minute actual album version is much more manageable for me - someone totally new to the band - rather than the two hour deluxe wankfest. So, in short doses I quite like it. The 22 minute version might get 3.5 stars or maybe 4 if I'm feeling particularly like loud music on that day. I might even listen to it again if it were easily available. The two hour version gets no more than 2. So, 3 stars overall and let that be a lesson to you mrs record company executive...

I've never given Mudhoney a proper listen before despite being in the orbit for many years. It's good, not great. They have the sound. They have the attitude. But they are missing the hooks and riffs. I still enjoyed this though. It's got a lot of heart.

I enjoyed it more than the other Mudhoney we had, but nothing that stand-out

Fuzzy. This racket must have given birth to nirvana.

Some pretty good early grunge. Most of the songs have a really good groove and the performances are quality. 6/10

It was okay. The album is confusing as it repeats a load of the same songs which made it feel like it was going on for ages and I skipped the duplicates

punkzin

Just on the heels of Blue Cheer, my first inclination was to classify this as another band that hides their limitations behind a whole lot of noise and give myself a pass on getting through the entire album. But as it played, I found I was starting to appreciate the songs and the style and what these guys were up to. Now, it's a stretch to say I liked the album, it's noisy for noisy's sake and abrasive on purpose, but I could glean a sense of purpose and integrity, and that was something to hang onto. As I got deeper into the album, it struck me that this is more akin to Hole than Nirvana ever was, and the Seattle connection makes me wonder if there's an actual connection. But not enough to look it up or anything. Anyway, now I've listened to a Mudhoney album. One step closer to fulfillment. P.S. The cover of "The Rose" was terrible.

Not bad.

Not my kind of music

Syns da va streit. Litt for raspete, kanskje

It was fine

Went in with a shitty attitude expecting to hate this record, and still wound up kind of liking it.

Whilst I like it, it's a very short album and can't be rated higher than a 3 👍🏼

First time listening to this album. I will check it out again.

3.5/5. A pretty enjoyable grunge/punk record, but I didn’t love any particular songs from this.

I like a lot of grunge, but I'm not sure if this one was necessarily for me? It's very loud and fuzzy, definitely not short on energy. Maybe I just wasn't angry enough today to listen to this. Or maybe I just prefer the bands that Mudhoney inspired.

Started out as a rollicking mosh pit of fun but quickly started to wear on me. More suited for live club experience than a listening session .

i like it, but it's not terribly exciting to me. the songs kind of blurred together and there were only a few that i really liked. not bad though. i think i could find a band of this genre that i like though... not quite this one.

Pretty decent, but didn’t really grab me.

Standard-issue grunge

As a huge fan of grunge, listening this was very surprisely. This was one of the first records from the grunge scene on Seattle, so it has it's historical importance. "Touche me I'm sick" is raw, and I liked it. And that's actually the best way I can define this thing, raw and powerful. I personally enjoy this music. Fav Tracks: Sweet young thing ain't sweet no more, Twenty four, Need, No one has 3.5/5

3.5/5 Some great sounds!

Disappointed. Was aware of the legend. Felt like more noise than innovation, insight or emotion. Very little dynamics. 3 stars for influencing countless, better others.

I like these guys. I've of those "bands that the other big name bands listened to" kinda things. Kinda can't have Pearl Jam and Soundgarden without Mudhoney.

This is full of energy and zing. While I enjoyed listening to it, I don't think I would go out of my way to listen to it again. It did start music in a direction though.

This really helped me find the energy to tidy my room. I found sweet young thing kinda tragic and moving, although it made me sort of uncomfortable. I really liked 'the rose', wondered if it's a cover because its lyrics were more sentimental than I would expect from this sort of music -or maybe it's ironic. In general I enjoyed listening

I wanted to like it more than I did. At first it sounded great and up my street but it fell apart quite a bit. Sounded like AI had written a US punk rock album

It was good. I would have liked just the original EP rather than the huge reissue

Decent

Mudhoney were the most disappointing band of this era. Not my bag at all, and this was my kinda band at the time.

I'm definitely going to give this one another listen, as grunge is one of my favorite genres of music and this album may a few listens to grow on me. A bit raw and unrefined was my initial opinion. But it was their debut album so maybe their other albums were better. I am unfamiliar with their work but I will definitely will be delving more into their discography.

Great grunge album. Feels a lot like Soundgarden and Silverchair.

It was cool. I can see how it paved the way for other garage punk and grunge bands at the time, but the deluxe edition that was on spotify was 2 hours long and really couldn't hold my attention. The original ~22 minute release probably would have been a 4.

Noisy and energetic. I only listened to the original 22 minutes version, but I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I liked it much better than their later album I've listened to. I usually find this kind of rock too simplistic but in small 22 minute doses I can dig it. This dude can totally scream better than Kurt Cobain

Best: Touch Me I'm Sick Worst: Mudride

I don't really have feelings about this one! I think it's great early grunge but I also felt a lot of the songs sounded the same and it just didn't hit for me.

i should have loved this but it was a whole lot of the same noise with little variation.

Your typical loud, 80s grunge

I’m sure that Nirvana is on this list, so I don’t know why I would also need to listen to this before I die. As an album though it’s decent. Mudride, If I Think were good.

No bad as background music, but honestly I get annoyed when albums are 2 hours long. A concert recording. Sure. But stuff from the studio? Trim the fat and just give me the bangers.

I feel like this is a bridge from ‘80s hair metal to grunge. Opened the door for Nirvana and Soundgarden to change the direction of rock music.

I like what this album likely did for music more than the album itself. Pre-grunge seems like an accurate description. Maybe this would have been fun to see live? But I likely would be too scared to be smacked around. There is definitely sincerity here though.

Mudhoney is a band I'm pretty torn on - Seattle grunge is one of my all-time favourite genres, and albums like Dirt/Badmotorfinger/Ten/Sweet Oblivion are those sorts of albums I would want with me on a desert island etc. And without bands like Mudhoney (and Green River), it's very possible none of those bands/albums would exist. On the other hand, the noisy/amateur/garage end of grunge borders on complete and utter shit, and the first Mudhoney album is pretty much the blueprint for that. There are a few moments that give us a bit of a glimpse into what the genre as a whole would be capable of later on, but this is really only a few shades of shit above something like Sonic Youth. And no fucking way am I doing another 2 hour album - that's three in the last week! Thankfully it looks like most of it is bonus tracks anyway, but still... 3/5, mostly for influence.

Sub par Nirvana

This one is kind of hard to rate because it’s just an EP. “Touch Me I’m Sick” isn’t even really on this.

Tricky one, could honestly be 1 star or 5 stars. It ugly, aggressive protogrunge. Pioneering, interesting muddy and messy. To the point - yet protracted, fun yet stressful. Dunno man, 3 I guess?

la me gusta! pero todas mucha demasiada

It's origins clearly show through in the seattle/grunge sound. Very Nirvana/Soundgarden... though the vocalist doesn't seem to have the passion/voice of Kurt or Chris. Nothing is immediately catchy, but the raw energy of the tracks are pretty good. If I Think stands out for me.

I thought this was kinda solid

Not exactly nirvana

Interesting album. The most popular song is comfortably the worst one on it, some of the songs feel more punk than grunge to me, several highlights I enjoyed, but it feels like it drags on as well. Favorite track: In 'n' Out of Grace

Like the first Black Sabbath album was to metal, this provides all the building blocks for the grunge era.

It's got historical value, and I really appreciate the 25 minute runtime. Wasn't totally into it but I enjoyed it raw loud attitude. 3.5/5

Grungiger Rock. Gefällt mal mehr, mal weniger.

Wock! If I think: screams without being unbearable I think it rides the line well Hate the police: MUMMY MUMMY MUMMY Halloween: guitar go bow wow Holy shit what a long album it’s over 2 hours Got bored and just forgot to write abt the rest

Wanted to like it but it goes on forever and blends together

First time hearing Mudhoney. Very grungy. Deep riffs like the Melvins. A poor man's Nirvana.

At this point, grunge seems to be a U-turn from punk in a sense that they are bringing back the thick riffs and guitar noodling from rock that they despised and avoided. For starters, proto-grunge album "Superfuzz Bigmuff" is barely 23 minutes long, but with tracks being as long as 5 and a half minutes (Why can't you just show the original, non-deluxe album, Spotify?). But if one thinks about it, it might just be a perfectly logical evolution of punk. As some pointed out, they derived the muscular sound from metal, particularly Sabbath metal. Noting that metal and punk are born out of the rejection of the bright and noodly psych rock, it's logical that they may be mixed and work together. As an album, "Superfuzz Bigmuff" did show the formation of the Seattle sound from punk. I like the energy and the guitar sounds. Hints of Nirvana-ish sounds are already present. Overall, it's decent. But perhaps it's only an enjoyable listen if one is interested with its background and influence. We already have Nirvana ffs. But of course, while Nirvana raised grunge, bands like Mudhoney conceived it.

Listened Before? N A grunge band I never really listened to, in their debut album. Pretty cool musical snapshot. I liked some of the songs a decent amount, but a lot of it is similar to Nirvana's Bleach. Simple and repetitive, with short songs. What this band lacks compared to Nirvana is Kurt Cobain's blistering guitars and primal screams. It normally wouldn't be fair to compare anyone to Nirvana, but these dudes were literally musical and time contemporaries. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: In 'n' Out of Grace

Ok. Decent album, but grunge never moved me. Its getting a bit boring after some songs

It wasn't anything spectacular but still a good listen

This was actually a pretty enjoyable album. Great guitar work!

Too juvenile for my liking. I can appreciate its contributions to the grunge genre, though

I always had this strange feeling that I should like this band more than I actually do? Having said that - it's OK

This is a nice change in music style compared the the previous albums I got. Some great songs to put the volume up and scream along. The whole album was decent, might have to listen to it again for a better opinion. Favourite songs: - Touch me I’m sick - Sweet young thing ain’t sweet no more

4/4 mud

sounded pretty ahead of its time. tapered off heavily after track 1. Not really my genre

Grinding

I know this is highly regarded. It's not bad. It's just more average-ish than I expected.

Much better than I anticipated. Not really my style though.

Actually enjoyed the overall sound of this a lot more than I thought I would, but at the same time didn't really love many individual tracks

Fuzzy and muffy as advertised.

The center of punk and rock fusing into grunge. Don't look too close or you'll go blind.

Should the listener find themselves on the Deluxe Edition of this album, the option to stop listening to the main tracks do exist about halfway through, unless of course Mudhoney is just so much the jam that a two-hour+ session of Mudhoney is appropriate. Alas, it was not. Mudhoney certainly possessed a progressive sound for an album produced in the late 80s. In a time where glam metal, and synth-pop-rock were the chosen poisons, this album was none of that and for that reason alone, the credit afforded this album as a prerequisite to death is earned. The album is a glimpse into the future, and such things are the real gems in this 1001 project. Mudhoney is a bit of a grinding listen, they really do not have a particularly spectacular quality that stands out thirty years later, but if the listener was alive in 1988, and listened through the evolution of that decade through the 90s when everything shifted back to humans making music, the appreciation for what Mudhoney did decidedly grows. If anything, enjoy this album as a positive testament to the future and a forgivable element of music's most asinine decade.

This is the debut album by the grunge band Mudhoney. It did not sell well at release, but it slowly gained traction in the underground music scene. 20 years later in 2008, the album peaked at 25 on the UK Indie Album chart. The music was good and hard - as grunge should be. I liked this album and I'm looking forward to listening to their second one when it's selected for me.

Better than I expected, but pretty full on - over 2 hours long!

Such a dirty album. And that's why I love it. Looking back, I'm surprised that the 18 year old me was into Mudhoney. This is the same year that I bought a Chris Rea CD. Something clearly wasn't right. I could jump around to Touch Me all night long.

I liked the first song the most but as it went on it got a bit worse for me. Solid grunge but not a huge fan of the vocals.

Raw dawg 3

Did not get a lot of it, but sounded good

It is really interesting to find this album with raw grunge sound, even before it was called in this way. I acknowledge the artistic value of having influenced a generation with this way of tuning guitars, singing, etc.

Áhugavert pre-grunge, ef svo má kalla. Platan nefnd eftir gítareffektunum sem voru notaðir. Gaman að þessu.

First of all, this is an EP, so write that down. Second, I would actually recommend the compilation Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles, which is pretty self-explanatory. Early singles such as Touch Me I'm Sick and Hate The Police are essentials, so you'd be missing out if you didn't give it a listen. Okay, onto Superfuzz Bigmuff proper. This is one of the original great grunge bands, along with the C/Z Records crowd at the time. They had an awesome vibe very similar to Sonic Youth, with loud guitars and in-your-face attitude that signaled the beginning of the 90's. I do think that the songwriting isn't quite as good as what they were making with the likes of Touch Me I'm Sick, but it's still an important source of inspiration with Kurt Cobain citing it on his 50 favorite albums.

It makes sense to me that this band did not get the fame like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc. It's fantastic that Mudhoney was able to come up with this newfangled grunge sound, but it is not as good as something like Nevermind or Ten. I thought this album had a strong start, and kind of plateaued/declined over the second half. A good album, but there are much better grunge records out there. First isn't always best. Fave tracks: Touch Me I'm Sick, Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More

For an album named after two effects pedals, this does not disappoint. Super fuzzy sounding early grunge band. I had not heard of these guys before, but it seems like they were pretty well known to contemporaries. The album itself is a little unpolished, recording sounds a little rough (although probably somewhat intentional). The grunge sound is unmistakable though, and clearly had a big influence on Nirvana. Short but sweet, the songs are well written and the atmosphere is nicely curated. A good listen, but probably not one I will listen to regularly. Also special shout-out to the album art, this might be one of the coolest covers I've ever seen. The styling fits perfectly and the photo really feels like it's alive. Fav Tracks: Chain that Door, Mudride, In 'n' Out of Grace

Spent a lot of this album trying decide if this was good and in my wheelhouse or just a little too shouty. In the end I leaned more to the latter.

It's okay, I guess....but feel like it's too easy to just zone out; the songs all kind of sound the same. I'm enjoying No One Has. In N' Out Of Grace is cool too. But overall, nothing too special

Loud and proud guitar, early grunge.

Incoherent crazy. Fantastic energy and surprisingly crisp production for a fuzz album. Very good indeed

Fun early grunge EP Favourites: "Need", "In 'n' Out of Grace"

Named after their favourite effects peddles, narrowly beating the Big Boobs 500X.

putting the lunge into grunge

Too long

Just because it inspired Kurt Cobain doesn’t make it a must hear.

Started out as decent alt rock before becoming a bit too aggressive and loud at the end. Great runtime though

6/10 Best song - Touch me I’m Sick

I’ve always been interested in Mudhoney, knowing that they influenced a lot of bands I love. This was about what I expected. Catchy in spots, pre-radio “friendly” grunge that really exceeded my expectations in some areas. Not 100% sure I’d listen again, but I enjoyed it.

Scuzzy rock, not particularly interesting musically or lyrically. Not for me.

Reminds me of Nirvana

It was good, but probably too long. It was enjoyable to listen to, but none of the songs really stood out to me. Favorite song: Dead Love

Based on the original 6 track album. I really enjoyed this very raw lots of energy, can see the influence it had on nirvana and the grunge scene. Just not one I’d rush back to due to my music tastes. Would have loved this as a teenager.

This is alright. Hasn’t got the melodic feel of nirvana or the interesting textures of sonic youth… falls between the two!

i should like this but i don't

Yeah kind of cool but it washed over me a little. Will give it another listen possibly, wish that there was a non deluxe edition tho

2nd listen in the past week. Enjoyable.

Mudhoney (and a few others) don't get enough credit for really "inventing" grunge music. Everyone thinks of Nirvana - but this is clearly one of that bands that influenced them. Nirvana's popularity always kinda pissed me off because of that. But - is Nirvana better than Mudhoney? For sure. Is Modhoney "good"? Not really. Still, credit where credit is due.

Energtic, sloppy fuzz punk. Would be 4/5 star if it were just the EP, but the deluxe edition has a load of extra songs, which just don't do anything for me, and I guess this is 1001 albums, not EPs.

It was OK. Didn't do enough to make me that interested in hearing more but I enjoyed it whilst it was on.

I know it's class, but it doesn't absolutely grab me. Probably better after multiple listens.

5/10. Meh, not terrible as grunge, and the original version of the album at least is nice and short.

The suggested album goes on far too long, it's pretty good to start then drags quiet badly

Good punk album top to bottom

Pretty good. I appreciate them getting right to the point and doing a tight 6 song album.

This is early and a huge part of making grunge a thing and I respect that innovation, but it still does not rise above the mediocrity that plagues most (not all!) grunge music.

not bad

Immature and lacking any sort of polish but I guess that’s the point. I mildly enjoyed it.

this album was released on my bday. Will have to say - not my favorite, not a huge early grunge fan. Although I haven't listened to it much to begin with...

Big influence on grunge

Sound innovative guitar effects and great punky bass and drums, but not much really stands out. The breakdown In and Out of Grace is cool and they definitely bring the out the grunge. Would have been into this in the 90s had I known about it, but they've been eclipsed by everything that came out of Seattle subsequently.

I really liked it, but as an album is a 3

A cool kinda grunge detour 🤷‍♂️. I think when grunge died it kinda discounted this sorta stuff. The Spotify link sends you to an expanded cash grab deluxe edition shit fest but the ep alone is solid when you’re in the right mood. ‘Chain that door’ and ‘if I think’ were my favourites.

The style isn’t what I usually like so I don’t know if this is considered good or bad punk but I listened a few times and it’s was fun.

violent punk and grunge.

Can definitely see how they influenced a lot of the bands that came after them such as Nirvana. Touch Me I'm sick was my favorite

Average album, not one I’ll return to I don’t think. Very punky sort of stuff without really doing anything for me!

listened to it before and it's not my taste

I hadn't heard of this band before, so when I started playing it I could hear how grounded in the early day of Seattle grunge this album and band are. It has that mix of punk, early garage band metal, and the usual grunge elements. On the surface, they might sound rough and dissonant, but they are tighter than that. They are really good musicians. Much as I applaud what the grunge bands were doing -- a good turning point or shake-up in any art form is how things evolve -- it's not really my favorite sound. Just personal preference.

Hate the police sehr punkig sogar. Nirvana.

Stooges were radderer

really like the sound, but the songs themselves aren't really doing much for me. Might be better after more listens, but for now, just a 3/5. Excited to have something on this list that isn't boring crap from the 60's, though!

Yeah

Had grunge down before Nirvana

Competently made but stirred nothing in me

At first glance I groaned thinking I would have to listen to another UK grunge band but turns out these boys are from Seattle! And they aren't half bad! It feels like they are approaching something special with this album but don't quite reach it. The music is very interesting but borders on overplayed and the lyrics are exciting at times but mostly lost in the music. There is even one very interesting track called Hate the Police where this lead singer says it. I really enjoyed Need, Mudride, and No One Has.. Album cover is really cool, too. Feels very grungy in a great way.

a solid album by an underappreciated band. Not one I have in my collection and not my favorite. I wouldn't classify it as essential, bit glad I got to give it a listen.

Grunge

Not much to say here. Liked a few songs, didn't enjoy it that much. They've got a cool sound but it's not something I'd return to very often. I am surprised at the date though, these guys put out an album in 2018 that I liked. Favorite tracks: Mudride, If I Think, Burn It Clean. Album art: Not a fan of the black and white here, but this is a cool picture and the band name/logo is nice. 3/5

I enjoyed the noise. Only a couple tracks stuck with me.

Great rock I love it. I didn’t realize grunge started so early.

Fav Song: Touch Me I'm Sick

The only specific song I think that deserves highlight here is "The Rose", though apparently both "Mudride" and "In 'n' Out of Grace" did well as singles It is essentially an early grunge album Unless you're a fan of the genre, I see no reason to listen to this over Nirvana, soundgarden or Alice in Chains, all of whom have much better music than this It is, however, relevant due to the time of release, as it was recorded quite early into the grunge movement and it does definitely fit a lot of what the movement solidified itself around.

Drones a bit but ok

Rock excelente que eu não conhecia! Guitarras e bateria muito boas

Screamy 80s kind of grunge rock...some of it was okay but I much prefer singing to talk shouting

A bit drone-ey, a bit whine-y

Too shouty

Quite liked the first track. Then realised the album is basically that track on repeat. A somewhat bored 2*

Not much musical content here. More noise without lyrical meaning.

Fuck that was boring

Why does he sound exactly like Weird Al?

Whatever. I didn't hate their sound, but there wasn't a single song that actually stood out

The forgotten first kid of a one night stand for Grunge 2.5

Solid sound but probably wouldn't revisit.

Super raw album, perhaps a bit too raw for my taste. The drums are the real saving grace, in my opinion. In all, it sounds like an early version of Nirvana. And maybe Cobain took some of these elements. I don’t know. 2.8/5.0

I liked this one a bit more than Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge which is also on this list and I got recommended before. I still don't love it as much as a I maybe should overall, but it is what it is. *A petty complaint but I resent that Spotify only has the deluxe version of the album.

I only listened to the 6 songs released in 1988 (fyi) - which I think/guess is what is intended (?). Between a 2 and a 3, and I'm leaning to a (high) 2. I didn't hate it, but didn't find it very interesting, either. (Yeah, I listened through a 2nd time, and it's still a high 2.) It's a little interesting, at first, I guess, but doesn't have much to keep my attention, or make me want to come back to it. It's like a slightly more musical/melodic cousin of metal, but of course that's damning with faint praise. Possibly their biggest role in music history is as precursor (John the Baptist) to, and influence on, Nirvana (messiah) -- both part of Seattle scene, both on the Subpop label. But Nirvana went way beyond Mudhoney, musically.

I'm feeling a strong 2 to light 3. It's more style than substance. The style is pretty cool; cathartic noise and texture. The substance is lacking; there's not much going on harmonically, melodically It would be fun to hear loud on a good sound system I like the album art I like the straightforward drumming I could only find the Deluxe Edition so I can't speak to the original track list

Influential, but underwhelming; original release is not even an album, it's an EP

wsm to niezbyt

An EP technically so shouldn’t be on the list?

That was quite painful. Happy to be done and forget about them. Some songs are fine but its quite abrasive and boring.

Similar to the other album of theirs. Not a big fan, with just a few decent moments

Ok, first off it’s an EP not an album. Secondly, this one’s definitely here for its influence rather than due to its outstanding quality. I do like it, and it’s good to hear something other than Touch Me I’m Sick, but it hasn’t blown me away

Not a fan of this band. Didn't hear much I liked.

Not great. A little painful

As a teen I am sure this album would have spoken to me, but I my 40s this sounds lame. The lyrics are where this really falls apart.

While this is a better album that their other one in the list, it remains as a nice but not noteworthy listen. I fail to see the importance of such an album which of itself, does not need to be bad. 7/10 [KEEP]

Good production and song composition, but the vocals leave a lot to be desired (emphasis on a lot).

This went on entirely too long. No album should have 32 tracks, especially one as mediocre as this.

To quote Austin Powers, “It’s not my bag, baby!” Two stars.

I think I'm too old for grunge now.

Budget Ramones sound.

Boring

I actually owned this album as a teenager because at that moment I was looking for everything far away from metal. After years have gone and the internet made so much music more available and visible to me my reappraisal of this album is pretty negative. I just don't really enjoy any of the songs. I still like some of the guitar playing but it's just not enough to enjoy.

i hated this but then didnt but then did dont do this with ASFM pure can this fuckass website please update so i can do half stars 5.9/10

Some of the songs were fine but on the overall did not really enjoy. Any song that I didn’t mind was ruined by Mark Arms voice. It’s just not my cup of tea.

Punkkirokkia ei minun mieleen

I lived in Seattle in the early 90's and got to see Mudhoney, they were never all that entertaining or enjoyable to listen to or watch. I think this album gets the nod because it was the precursor to all the quality grunge music to follow, they're the Grunge OG's. "Touch Me I'm Sick" isn't good, but it's their biggest song. When you were 19 this made you get into the pit with the other 20-somethings and bang around until you were covered in other people's sweat & your shirt didn't fit right anymore. It had it's time, but that's long past and this does not hold up well. Vocals are weak, music is average and poorly recorded (listen to the drums!). Better live than on vinyl, that's for sure. You can hear the influence that would inspire Green River, Nirvana ("Need"), Soundgarden ("Twenty Four", "No One Has") and to some extent, Pearl Jam ("In n' Out Of Grace"). Just not good enough for the T1001, other than influence this album has very little to offer. 2.5 stars

2 - ok

Thought I liked this at first but alas!!! it got v repetitive and dull about halfway through, wont listen again

4 - BAD

Just not into this.

Once again I was hopeful I would get a interesting album. Once again I was disappointed. The albums on this list aren't bad, but they don't give me anything either. A cavalcade of 2s and 3s.

I thought I would enjoy this from the start, but it ended up being a slog. Way too long, a bit repetitive, and I kept thinking that I’d rather be listening to other groups from the same time period. 2.5/5 what a shame this wasn’t 1/3 the length

Not good for the morning too screamy 🤣 and a bit monotonous

Absolutely a record that defined a new generation of music. However, I wasn’t a fan of this record.

Mudhoney seemed quite nice in general but surprisingly I didnt take out much satisfaction from this listen, i dunno

A punk / proto alt rock mix. Some songs that were catchy for the genre but ultimately not really for me.

ılk sarkının basında osuruyo mu gegırıyo mu onu anlamadım gece 1de dınleneye calıstım ıcn basım agrıdı

Noise.

Listening to this irritated me. Why? The streaming version of the album is the 6-hour 25th anniversary re-release compared to the original sub-30 minute collection of songs. I liked Mudhoney back in the day as an original grungester but why the fuck is it on this list?

I was surprised this was 1988, has a sound that I associate with the 90's scene. It was an ok listen, not really my vibe and found it slightly boring, felt like a rebranding of the 70s punk scene

If i had connected with this at 20 it might mean something other than noise and negativity. Not my cup of tea.

Grunge is not really my jam. This album is sort of a mix of grunge, metal and punk, but not in a way that hits me in the feels at all. Imagine my relief when I found out that the original album Is only 23 minutes long, and not the over 2 hour long version that popped up on Spotify!

As a Gen Xer, I'm probably contractually obligated to rave about every Seattle band from the 80s and 90s, but I just can't with this one. I've never been a fan and am still not a fan. I don't understand the conventional wisdom that Mudhoney is somehow the best band of the era and was unfairly left for dead in Nirvana’s wake. Sorry, kids, but no one in Mudhoney could write a song a fraction as good as any Cobain original, and I'm hardly the world’s biggest fan of that band. Anyway, this isn't quite metal, isn't quite punk, isn't quite grunge, it's just kind of annoying music. Sorry not sorry

I can understand what they're trying to get at, they just never really quite get there

It's intense and angry and all that, but after a while quite exhausting. Probably hit different when it was new.

grunge rock

Not sure where to place this album because it was basically different versions of the same 6 songs…. The songs weren’t good enough to warrant that many different versions.

Not a big fan. Songs were OK, but the vocals were too much on the screamy side for me. A little screaming goes a long way in my opinion, and this was wearing me out.
