Touch Me I'm Sick! This is right up my alley and is a huge influence on a lot of bands that were extremely important to me back in the day. That being said, I never really listened to Mudhoney all that much back at that time outside of their My Brother the Cow album that I owned. This album is pretty good, with 3 or 4 songs that really stand out as some of the best from that era. Touch Me..., If I Think, and In n Out of Grace are all great.

A super short EP (6 songs long). No idea why they went for something like this instead of an actual LP, but alright. It's pretty good. Obviously not a "full album experience" or anything - mostly just felt like listening to a super short grunge playlist. Not much substance or cohesion, but still packing some enjoyable tunes.
Superfuzz Bigmuff = When I haven't shaved for a few days, and your mom hasn't shaved for a month. The resulting friction is simply electric! 🧔🧔

Seattle grunge is interesting (and great) genre of music. But I don't fully hear it here. There are a few moments or tracks when you can start banging your head to, but the band is too embroiled in the act. 2.5/5.

some totally fine noisy grungey punk with this grainy fuzzy white noise static filter over everything. I guess it's nice. but it's even nicer that the original release of this was only 6 tracks
It was meh. It wasn't bad but wasn't good. It was a little screaming a points. Thankfully it was short so no songs were skipped. Probably better than a 2 but I will round down.
Was kind of excited for this one as, despite my distaste of grunge, I've heard some mudhoney before and liked it, but this just didn't work for me.
It would really fucking help if whoever decides what goes on Spotify other streaming services are available) could avoid only putting deluxe versions of albums on there. I'm usually downloading these at 5:30 in the morning and don't have time to curate a playlist and check what the fuck I'm actually supposed to be listening to. I listened to this ages ago and disliked it because it was just too much. The 22 minute actual album version is much more manageable for me - someone totally new to the band - rather than the two hour deluxe wankfest. So, in short doses I quite like it. The 22 minute version might get 3.5 stars or maybe 4 if I'm feeling particularly like loud music on that day. I might even listen to it again if it were easily available. The two hour version gets no more than 2. So, 3 stars overall and let that be a lesson to you mrs record company executive...

I've never given Mudhoney a proper listen before despite being in the orbit for many years. It's good, not great. They have the sound. They have the attitude. But they are missing the hooks and riffs. I still enjoyed this though. It's got a lot of heart.
Yesterday I listened to Soundgarden's multi-million-selling album which I found to be turgid. Meanwhile this pre-grunge EP is EP-IC! That guitar sounds is glorious, while the songs have so much life and power.

It was okay. The album is confusing as it repeats a load of the same songs which made it feel like it was going on for ages and I skipped the duplicates
Bad singer. Not a fan of grunge so not expecting much from one of its progenitors. HUGE influence on Nirvana, which shows. Even Kurt Cobain's singing style is similar to this. I REALLY wanted to switch this off after two songs, but I persevered because it's only just over twenty minutes long. For this reason more than anything else it gets 2/10. I truly detested this. I cannot understand the appeal of 'energy' etc. blah blah blah. One condition of good music is that it must be GOOD. I was going to give it two stars but halfway in my mood was too sour. This did not improve my opinion of grunge one bit.
How this band merits two selections is simply baffling. This is noisy and noisy and noxious and entirely imbecilic. If the intent is to drag listeners thru the mud, the record must be considered a success. A pale imitation of Dinosaur, Jr would be a charitable way of describing the sound but that dishonors Mascis.
Somewhere between punk, hardcore, '80s "hair" metal and lo-fi noise experimental styles of Sonic Youth. Easy to hear the connection and influence on grunge and Nirvana. Nonetheless, I don't like it much and thankful I only listened to the original 6 track LP plus The Rose to see how differently they interpreted it to Bette Midler's classic version (actually not too badly in their scuzzy rock style).

Punk, leuk. Ik ben niet vies van een beetje scheurende gitaren, en dit klinkt prima. Ik begin een patroon te vinden waarin teksten waarschijnlijk een zeer belangrijke rol spelen in muziek, en ik ben helaas iets meer sonisch ingesteld. Ik mis ongetwijfeld een hoop, het is wat het is. I like noise and screaming. But I couldn’t get around this. Maybe if I was in a grungier or punkier mood but I just didn’t enjoy this.
I’ve had to give this a few attempts to get into it. Much as I really like grunge, my head is not in this today, nor was it yesterday. The album title makes me laugh, and this is seminal material with good energy. But I think I like later grunge with a bit more refinement.
I have never been a fan of Mudhoney. To scream-y. The cover of The Rose was disappointing.
Just on the heels of Blue Cheer, my first inclination was to classify this as another band that hides their limitations behind a whole lot of noise and give myself a pass on getting through the entire album. But as it played, I found I was starting to appreciate the songs and the style and what these guys were up to. Now, it's a stretch to say I liked the album, it's noisy for noisy's sake and abrasive on purpose, but I could glean a sense of purpose and integrity, and that was something to hang onto. As I got deeper into the album, it struck me that this is more akin to Hole than Nirvana ever was, and the Seattle connection makes me wonder if there's an actual connection. But not enough to look it up or anything. Anyway, now I've listened to a Mudhoney album. One step closer to fulfillment. P.S. The cover of "The Rose" was terrible.
I saw these guys once in '92. I'd heard of Mudhoney, but didn't know their music. (On the plus side, a then-unknown band called The Flaming Lips opened up for them, and they were amazing.) The music was completely unmemorable. What was getting swallowed up by a mosh pit, getting kicked in the head by a flying mosher, and barely making it out of the pit with my glasses intact. Anyway, I've avoided Mudhoney's music ever since. So I was a little surprised that I found any enjoyment from this album (or EP) today. The songs for the most part lack any good hooks, but I did enjoy some of the guitar work and the energy was cool. Mark Arm, though, is completely lacking in charisma, nor does he really have the vocal chops to keep me interested. All of these songs would have been better if you simply you swapped him out in favor of Courtney Love. These guys really want to be The Stooges, which I can appreciate. But I don't know that they bring enough originality for that pursuit to be worthwhile. This is more of a 2.5 but I'm rounding down because I'm still annoyed by those moshers. Which isn't Mudhoney's fault, but fuck 'em.
Well I got through this multi-hour Mudhoney deluxe edition only because I was cooking late-night lasagna. By hour 2, I was like “do I like Mudhoney?” No. I don’t like their music. I do like the band name and appreciate grunge more than heavy metal. These are my only observations.
I never quite got this band. There's some pretty good songs but also a healthy dose of "Yeah, that's okay I guess." I always suspected that they got the attention they did was because Cobain was a big fan. Not bad but there's a ton of other albums that I'd rather listen to.
Wow, did I need this today. "Superfuzz Bigmuff" is the debut EP and first major release by Seattle grunge band Mudhoney. The album was recorded in Seattle on the Subpop label with producer Jack Endino. The album title was named after the band's two favorite guitar effects: the Univox Super-fuzz and Electro-Harmonix Bigmuff. It initially sold poorly but was later acknowledged as a seminal record in the Seattle grunge scene. Guitar strumming as band kicks in opening "Need." Mark Arm's throttled vocals. A dirty sound with the guitar and music sounding very Stooges' like. Nirvana was in the room. There's so much he needs, he bleeds. The band goes punk on "Chain That Door." Fast-paced thrashy drums. A churning guitar. "Mudride" is slower, grungier. Steve Turner stretches those guitar strings. Here's the grunge and heavy feel. A wah-wah and distorted guitar layering: still my beating heart. There's no place to hide as he takes you on a mudride, baby. "No One Has" is back to fast paced. Great drumming and off-key guitar chord notes. "If I Think" starts off slow. It takes off and we got that soft-loud-soft thang goin.' It ends in Southern rock fashion. Why not? The last song "In 'n' Out of Grace" is just straight thrash metal basically. A Peter Fonda eulogy open from "The Wild Angels." More wah-wah and distorted guitar layering. This a pounding, great album. No halfway on this. They fuse the Stooges, Jimi Hendrix, punk and early-to-mid eighties thrash metal into something their own. Great guitar. Arm's lyrics and vocals are edgy (hell, the whole band is edgy), chaotic and strained. He's lived a rugged life and his plans are not to change. Put this record on now and wake your neighbors the fuck up. Tremendous album cover too.

This just didn't do it for me at all, which I'm surprised by, cos by all rights I should love it. Very grungy, very shouty, lo fi recording, and a big muff. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for it, but it just seemed to be basically the same thing over and over for a very long time.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say there were some superfuzzes and bigmuffs on this album! Mudhoney was always one of those bands to me that had a fan base I just knew were way too cool to talk to me. I guess that’s why I mostly stayed away from them. But that’s all different now. I’m a big boy, with a job! Didn’t care for this one too much. The mixing on these late 80s heavy albums just doesn’t resonate with me.
Went in with a shitty attitude expecting to hate this record, and still wound up kind of liking it.
Whilst I like it, it's a very short album and can't be rated higher than a 3 👍🏼

It sure is an influential record for the whole grunge wave, but *Superfuzz Bigmuff* is technically an EP (later expanded into a compilation). If Dimery betrayed his own rules for his list, I can't see why he didn't include other pivotal EPs (say, Beck's *Loser* or Godspeed You! Black Emperor's *Slow Riot For New Zero Canada*). And if you consider this record as a compilation instead, you must then include far more important ones (like The Buzzcocks' *Singles Going Steady*, The Beatles' red and blue albums, or even Bob Marley's *Legend*). I'm giving four stars to this EP, but it's the very rare case where I won't include it in my own list. Rules matter sometimes, don't they? Even for unruly bands such as Mudhoney. So next, please. Number of albums left to review: 486 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 243 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 115 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 153, including this one.

good god one second into this and I immediately put it on volume one and had no problem not being in the same room as the music. terrible.
In high school an equally-emotionally-stunted friend of mine and I wrote "songs" for a fake band we made up to amuse ourselves to no end. He had no musical talent but I taught him how to play bass enough to be able to record some of our absolutely gross-out, talentless, puerile, and frankly hilarious tunes on my c1982 Panasonic cassette recorder in my living room when the family was far far away. Worst-quality recordings imaginable. Our *big hit single* was called "Follow The Glowing Green Gonad." That song was infinitely better than anything on this donkeyshitparade. 0/10 1 star. are you kidding me with this trash. Figures that Cobain loved it of course he did.

I like a lot of grunge, but I'm not sure if this one was necessarily for me? It's very loud and fuzzy, definitely not short on energy. Maybe I just wasn't angry enough today to listen to this. Or maybe I just prefer the bands that Mudhoney inspired.

Started out as a rollicking mosh pit of fun but quickly started to wear on me. More suited for live club experience than a listening session .
I liked Mudhoney when i was in college, but haven't listened much since. To begin with, I felt this hadn't aged that well, but I admit it grew on me as I listened more. Decent proto-grunge. Cate will hate it! Note: listened to the 6 tracks on the original EP plus a few more. 2+ hours of this is too much in one session! Fave track probably "You Got It (Keep it Outta My Face)" This is a 3.5 for me but going to generously give it 4

Standard-issue grunge
As a huge fan of grunge, listening this was very surprisely. This was one of the first records from the grunge scene on Seattle, so it has it's historical importance. "Touche me I'm sick" is raw, and I liked it. And that's actually the best way I can define this thing, raw and powerful. I personally enjoy this music. Fav Tracks: Sweet young thing ain't sweet no more, Twenty four, Need, No one has 3.5/5
Slightly aggravating to figure out how to listen to this. Originally released as an EP in 1988, then re-released as an album length compilation including the songs on this EP (although in a different order) and early singles from the band. The only thing available on streaming services is a 2+ hour deluxe edition which has yet a different track listing order than either of the first two releases. Reading interviews and such, it seems like Mudhoney has been asked about it a bunch as they seem pretty adamant that they consider this their first album, and that they consider the designation between EP and LP to be pretty arbitrary. With that in mind I chose to listen to the 6 song 22 minute original "EP" release for this. This album definitely rules and rocks. Mudhoney were the best grunge band in that scene, and that should not come as shocking or surprising to anyone anymore. And like most bands from that scene, their first release was their best. It's the most urgent, raw and true to live representation for them. Just a great recording as well to capture that spirit.

Day 95 What I love about first albums is that they usually capture the energy of a band in its purest, rawest form. In the case of a debut EP, you are not running short of pure energy, but you might run short of songs. That's my first complaint about this one. The second complaint is the lack of Touch Me I'm Sick on here. But in terms of an album intended as a document, this album delivers in spades: you can sense the vitality of the Seattle scene just before it exploded/imploded into the international market. And it's so imperfect that it is moving.
A solid record. One of the more approachable albums of the early grunge era.
Disappointed. Was aware of the legend. Felt like more noise than innovation, insight or emotion. Very little dynamics. 3 stars for influencing countless, better others.
I like these guys. I've of those "bands that the other big name bands listened to" kinda things. Kinda can't have Pearl Jam and Soundgarden without Mudhoney.

This is full of energy and zing. While I enjoyed listening to it, I don't think I would go out of my way to listen to it again. It did start music in a direction though.

This really helped me find the energy to tidy my room. I found sweet young thing kinda tragic and moving, although it made me sort of uncomfortable. I really liked 'the rose', wondered if it's a cover because its lyrics were more sentimental than I would expect from this sort of music -or maybe it's ironic. In general I enjoyed listening
I did not like this and thought it was very silly. Not my bag. Imagine its something fun to see live but kind of just ground my gears tbh
I wanted to like it more than I did. At first it sounded great and up my street but it fell apart quite a bit. Sounded like AI had written a US punk rock album

Grunge and Alternative music wouldn't be what it is/was without Mudhoney and SubPop records in the late 80s. As a matter of fact, Mudhoney is peak Grunge/Alternative. 4/5.

Decent
It took me awhile to get through this album, not because I didn't like it, but because I could never find a full 2+ hours to listen to this until I realized the second disc is the same as the first, just live. I was aware of their contribution to the foundations of the Seattle scene, but never dove into them until this. I was surprised and impressed. Far less polished than the bands that rose to fame a few years later which I appreciated. I think this album provides a little insight into what the Seattle scene was before everyone sold out, got rich, and killed themselves.
Another big muff! Who's muff is bigger, Mudhoney or John Martyn?? I wanted to learn more about Mudhoney's muff, and in doing so I fell down a Wikipedia rabbit hole. But it turns out, rather than beavers and pie, I learned a lot about distortion pedals. Because the Univox Super-Fuzz and the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi (π) were pedals that were instrumental (get it?) in shaping Mudhoney's sound. Ok, I guess I did learn about π. But not pie. It was pretty cool to learn about how the technology for distorting and dirtying a guitar's sound evolved over time, from deliberately misused and broken amps to fuzzboxes that do some kind of science-y stuff to sound waves that I don't fully understand. I may not understand just how the fuzzbox distorts those sound waves, but I do love the sound it creates. My formative music-appreciating years were in the early 90s, so grunge and its reliance on fuzzy, growling, and gritty guitars have a warm place in my heart. And grunge's early 90s boom is thanks to the groundwork laid by Mudhoney, Green River, and Soundgarden in the early days of Sub Pop Records. For as influential as early Sub Pop was in shaping that genre, it's surprising that the 1001 has only 2 Mudhoney albums and the only Soundgarden album is their most mainstream major record release. There would be no Nirvana without Green River and Mudhoney. There would be no Pearl Jam without Green River and Mudhoney. But beyond Nirvana, grunge doesn't get enough love on the 1001. Not British enough, I suppose. Mudhoney isn't my favorite grunge, but "Superfuzz Bigmuff" played a crucial role in launching Sub Pop and the genre to national attention.
The original 6 song album is much better than the deluxe version 1001 sent me to. I like the distortion. Good stuff.
why is this album like 1000 years long
The time of some of the albums that come on this list is just evil sometimes. Mudhoney are playing their First show in Sydney in 9 years tonight. I decided not to go months ago but bam, this comes up and I regretting the fact I'm not going. Seeing them at the Bondi Pavilion at the tail end of 1990 was one of the best thing to happen to me at stage of my life. Most of what they played is from this album which to me is still as blistering, and fresh as on that day standing just behind a sun burnt drunken mosh
Mudhoney were the most disappointing band of this era. Not my bag at all, and this was my kinda band at the time.
No just too much, I didn't enjoy this. Loud and out of tune. Plenty of energy though
I'm definitely going to give this one another listen, as grunge is one of my favorite genres of music and this album may a few listens to grow on me. A bit raw and unrefined was my initial opinion. But it was their debut album so maybe their other albums were better. I am unfamiliar with their work but I will definitely will be delving more into their discography.

I like the tone and sound of the album but the vocalist gets really annoying after over half an hour.The songs are all layered in distortion and fuzz with giant sounding Choruses.It gets exhausting after a while.Even the slow songs sound gigantic.Really liked some of the songs though
The original album is 22:25 min long, then why the hell we point to a 2h15 min extended crap album that ruins the experience. The original album is a punk album, is supposed to be simple, short and dirty. We turn it into a bad experience, specially for people that are not fans. I can appreciate the influence it had on other grunge artists but the lyrics are terrible. I like grunge and punk but this is a sophomoric effort. Disappointing.

It was cool. I can see how it paved the way for other garage punk and grunge bands at the time, but the deluxe edition that was on spotify was 2 hours long and really couldn't hold my attention. The original ~22 minute release probably would have been a 4.
Noisy and energetic. I only listened to the original 22 minutes version, but I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I liked it much better than their later album I've listened to. I usually find this kind of rock too simplistic but in small 22 minute doses I can dig it. This dude can totally scream better than Kurt Cobain

I don't really have feelings about this one! I think it's great early grunge but I also felt a lot of the songs sounded the same and it just didn't hit for me.
Grunge sounds more like Mudhoney than Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Pretty important record/EP and it holds up pretty well today. The deluxe version runs a little long in the tooth, especially since I can't tell much difference between the final versions and the alternative recordings.
Spotify only has the Deluxe Edition so I'm listening to that release. Nailing down what grunge bands sound like isn't easy but this album sounds more grunge than most. The guitars sound so good!

I understand why this was there, as it is very influential for the grunge movement. This was pretty good, but less good than some other similar things in that genre. 7,4/10

No bad as background music, but honestly I get annoyed when albums are 2 hours long. A concert recording. Sure. But stuff from the studio? Trim the fat and just give me the bangers.
This is an important release in the early days of grunge. But, it is only an EP and I would not include on the list for that reason. It is solid, however.
I feel like this is a bridge from ‘80s hair metal to grunge. Opened the door for Nirvana and Soundgarden to change the direction of rock music.
I like what this album likely did for music more than the album itself. Pre-grunge seems like an accurate description. Maybe this would have been fun to see live? But I likely would be too scared to be smacked around. There is definitely sincerity here though.

Mudhoney is a band I'm pretty torn on - Seattle grunge is one of my all-time favourite genres, and albums like Dirt/Badmotorfinger/Ten/Sweet Oblivion are those sorts of albums I would want with me on a desert island etc. And without bands like Mudhoney (and Green River), it's very possible none of those bands/albums would exist. On the other hand, the noisy/amateur/garage end of grunge borders on complete and utter shit, and the first Mudhoney album is pretty much the blueprint for that. There are a few moments that give us a bit of a glimpse into what the genre as a whole would be capable of later on, but this is really only a few shades of shit above something like Sonic Youth. And no fucking way am I doing another 2 hour album - that's three in the last week! Thankfully it looks like most of it is bonus tracks anyway, but still... 3/5, mostly for influence.

Sub par Nirvana
I’ve never heard of Mudhoney before today. However, I don’t know if “Superfuzz Bigmuff” has the same connotations in the USA as it does in the UK, but I personally found that hilarious. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Mudride This was only the second album of all my days of reviewing that I couldn’t make it all the way through. The deluxe edition was over 2 hours so I didn’t even consider that, but the standard edition with 12 songs at 44 minutes still felt too long. Grunge misses more than it hits with me in general anyway, and this felt like a caricature of grunge. Mudride’s lyrics actually made me laugh, so is the only track that I found worth noting: “I got a mouth full of dirt, a hand full of charms. Got a rusty old spade, don’t care who I harm.” Those lyrics are genuinely ridiculous. I got 8 songs in out of 12 before I gave up.
It's big, it's load, it has a great title, I was bored most of the way through.
Bleh and the deluxe is super long

Tricky one, could honestly be 1 star or 5 stars. It ugly, aggressive protogrunge. Pioneering, interesting muddy and messy. To the point - yet protracted, fun yet stressful. Dunno man, 3 I guess?
Regardless of the mutations that the structure of Superfuzz Bigmuff has gone through (six track EP to 14 track full length to two disc deluxe edition with live shows and radio sessions), one thing remains consistent: this fucking rips. With this release, Mudhoney set off something massive and ultimately set that stone for what the next several years were going to be for not just their label but for their hometown and the genre they've birthed. Without this, it is quite impossible to fathom what the landscape would be like and it looks very bleak indeed. Probably bad, perhaps worse. Thankfully, it's not the case. In any way, whether an EP or an LP or a 2 CD set, Superfuzz Bigmuff is required listening for the starting point for grunge.

Sludgy, thick, heavy guitar coupled with frenetic vocals and energy is a perfect combination in my book. Any album named after a fuzz pedal (much less two!) probably rocks, and this LP does so in spades. Things are fairly homogenous in the track length/tempo department, but when the sound is this good you gotta let the little things slide and let it wash over you.

When I first saw this album was over two hours long I thought fucking hell these guys have some ego on them then I started listening and saw it was Punkrock and then I loved every moment of it

It's origins clearly show through in the seattle/grunge sound. Very Nirvana/Soundgarden... though the vocalist doesn't seem to have the passion/voice of Kurt or Chris. Nothing is immediately catchy, but the raw energy of the tracks are pretty good. If I Think stands out for me.

Interesting album. The most popular song is comfortably the worst one on it, some of the songs feel more punk than grunge to me, several highlights I enjoyed, but it feels like it drags on as well. Favorite track: In 'n' Out of Grace
Dramatic and fun, though not always pleasant to listen to. Most notably influenced by the Ramones, with notes of stadium rock and and metal. Clearly an originator of Seattle Grunge as described in reviews, you can really hear the two pedals the album is named for
Gripping, grungey, engaging, gets in, gets out, leaves you breathless and wanting for more.
Like the first Black Sabbath album was to metal, this provides all the building blocks for the grunge era.
Superfuzz Bigmuff isn't good. Think it staves off a 1/5 because it doesn't annoy me but I don't like it much. It's prosaic, inauthentic and not very fun.
This is... really, really bad. One of those albums which inspired other people to make much better music. The Spotify link takes you to the 2 hour megadeluxe version, the actual one is only 6 tracks and 22 minutes long. It's loud, thrashy, guy with a rubbish voice oscillates between singing and screaming, the odd song with religious influences, a lot of anger. 1/5, will actively avoid in future rather than merely not seeking it out.

Best Song: Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More. Had a decent groove to it, even if the lyrics were a bit suspect. Worst Song: Halloween. Somehow the most amateurish of the whole lot. Overall: Massively overlong. Feels like a garage band saved up for some studio time and decided that if they paid to record something then it was going on the record.

FALLACIES, FALLACIES, FALLACI-HES
The album that defined early grunge. It's hardcore punk with a strong emphasis on a dirty, heavily distorted (often doom-like) guitar and slowed-down, almost evil sounding vocals. It's loud and energetic, and some songs have a surf rock influence that aligns with contemporaries like the Pixies and Sonic Youth. I know this isn't the original album, but I loved almost all the songs, especially the collaboration with Sonic Youth on "Halloween." Grunge before they even had a word for it. This EP is a mind blowing revelation that will pave the road for the next big rock and cultural movement of the 90's. It will inspire some really great bands for sure.

First time hearing Mudhoney. Very grungy. Deep riffs like the Melvins. A poor man's Nirvana.
At this point, grunge seems to be a U-turn from punk in a sense that they are bringing back the thick riffs and guitar noodling from rock that they despised and avoided. For starters, proto-grunge album "Superfuzz Bigmuff" is barely 23 minutes long, but with tracks being as long as 5 and a half minutes (Why can't you just show the original, non-deluxe album, Spotify?). But if one thinks about it, it might just be a perfectly logical evolution of punk. As some pointed out, they derived the muscular sound from metal, particularly Sabbath metal. Noting that metal and punk are born out of the rejection of the bright and noodly psych rock, it's logical that they may be mixed and work together. As an album, "Superfuzz Bigmuff" did show the formation of the Seattle sound from punk. I like the energy and the guitar sounds. Hints of Nirvana-ish sounds are already present. Overall, it's decent. But perhaps it's only an enjoyable listen if one is interested with its background and influence. We already have Nirvana ffs. But of course, while Nirvana raised grunge, bands like Mudhoney conceived it.

Listened Before? N A grunge band I never really listened to, in their debut album. Pretty cool musical snapshot. I liked some of the songs a decent amount, but a lot of it is similar to Nirvana's Bleach. Simple and repetitive, with short songs. What this band lacks compared to Nirvana is Kurt Cobain's blistering guitars and primal screams. It normally wouldn't be fair to compare anyone to Nirvana, but these dudes were literally musical and time contemporaries. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: In 'n' Out of Grace

The deluxe version was the only version on Spotify and the 2:15 hour runtime definitely scared me so I only listened to the original 22 minutes at first. It was an interesting mix of post punk and pre grunge that definitely captures a weird grey area of rock like this in the late 80s. Regardless, this was a 3/5 but once the original tracks ended I wanted to keep listening to the whole deluxe thing so I suppose that bumps it up to a 4

Nice album. Sad and depressing grunge. What else you want? Unique and interesting ways to setup the progression of their songs. Wasn’t the typical verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus. It had good switch ups. Whiny like all other punk. Could tell nirvana banked off this as inspiration very much so. Sick as bass lines in some songs. Good quality. Just too one dimensional for me. Same effects every song. Same bland and drab feel. Same whine. Couldn’t really tell where some songs began and others ended

I don't think I've ever heard anything from Mudhoney before. All of the tracks were new to me. Before listening to this album, I knew that Curt Cobain listed them as a band that he admired, and I can hear how "Superfuzz Bigmuff" fits into the landscape of early grunge. Listening to the first two tracks ("Need", "Chain That Door") I was reminded of Hole (who's lead was Courtney Love, Cobain's wife / partner). I wonder if Hole was chasing some of the sound that they heard from Mudhoney. My highest rated track "Mudride" its energy. I did a second listen, to see what I missed, but the album still gets a 3 from me ("just okay"). I don't think I would think of a reason to come back after these to listens.
Actually enjoyed the overall sound of this a lot more than I thought I would, but at the same time didn't really love many individual tracks
After listening to Cat Stevens, I felt like I was participating in the ice bucket challenge again - someone pouring ice water over my head with Mudhoney. While I can appreciate the band's use of Super-Fuzz and Big Muff pedals, listening to the same dirty guitars on every song was a little much for me on this particular album. I was not crazy about the lyrics either.

Sounds unfinished
Godfathers of grunge so I wanted to like this more. It was too much for me in youth. Too much for me as an elder millennial. Still not uncool enough in that cool way--even as I continually go back to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc. Maybe it was more a GenX thing--rebellion of the lumberjack and Microsoft kids before it was labelled.
While the band name looked familiar, I wasn't at all familiar with their music. Overall this was a rocking album and I will be going back and checking out more of their catalog. Also sweet album title!

Should the listener find themselves on the Deluxe Edition of this album, the option to stop listening to the main tracks do exist about halfway through, unless of course Mudhoney is just so much the jam that a two-hour+ session of Mudhoney is appropriate. Alas, it was not. Mudhoney certainly possessed a progressive sound for an album produced in the late 80s. In a time where glam metal, and synth-pop-rock were the chosen poisons, this album was none of that and for that reason alone, the credit afforded this album as a prerequisite to death is earned. The album is a glimpse into the future, and such things are the real gems in this 1001 project. Mudhoney is a bit of a grinding listen, they really do not have a particularly spectacular quality that stands out thirty years later, but if the listener was alive in 1988, and listened through the evolution of that decade through the 90s when everything shifted back to humans making music, the appreciation for what Mudhoney did decidedly grows. If anything, enjoy this album as a positive testament to the future and a forgivable element of music's most asinine decade.
this album wasn't terrible. it was okay but it was on the meh side. i liked how prominent the guitar sound was; it made the grunge and punk stand out. i don't know much nirvana but i can definitely see an early influence happening on this album as well. as a side note, i can see how this album wouldn't come to very much commercial success, but the critical acclaim this album received later was remarkable!

If you lookup 'grunge' music you'll likely be presented with the usual suspects - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and so on, and in many cases struggle to hear what they meant by 'grunge' sounding - however, stick this on and Touch Me I'm Sick leaves you in no doubt what they meant. This is a great album that makes no apologies about being rough around the edges, gnarly sounding, and even the album artwork you can imagine being stuck together using glue sticks and Sharpie pens.
This is the debut album by the grunge band Mudhoney. It did not sell well at release, but it slowly gained traction in the underground music scene. 20 years later in 2008, the album peaked at 25 on the UK Indie Album chart. The music was good and hard - as grunge should be. I liked this album and I'm looking forward to listening to their second one when it's selected for me.
Better than I expected, but pretty full on - over 2 hours long!
Not normally a grunge fan but actually quite enjoyed this. Somehow it seemed a bit bouncier and playful than, say, Nirvana. I liked it in the same way that I like early Sabbath - the band revelling in the noise they can make. The lyrics weren’t terrible either, from what I could make out. I think the original 22 minute version of this is probably enough for one sitting, but I left the Deluxe edition running just to hear their version of Halloween. Good stuff.
Such a dirty album. And that's why I love it. Looking back, I'm surprised that the 18 year old me was into Mudhoney. This is the same year that I bought a Chris Rea CD. Something clearly wasn't right. I could jump around to Touch Me all night long.

Banging debut from one of the best bands to emerge from the Grunge period.
First of all, this is an EP, so write that down. Second, I would actually recommend the compilation Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles, which is pretty self-explanatory. Early singles such as Touch Me I'm Sick and Hate The Police are essentials, so you'd be missing out if you didn't give it a listen. Okay, onto Superfuzz Bigmuff proper. This is one of the original great grunge bands, along with the C/Z Records crowd at the time. They had an awesome vibe very similar to Sonic Youth, with loud guitars and in-your-face attitude that signaled the beginning of the 90's. I do think that the songwriting isn't quite as good as what they were making with the likes of Touch Me I'm Sick, but it's still an important source of inspiration with Kurt Cobain citing it on his 50 favorite albums.

It makes sense to me that this band did not get the fame like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc. It's fantastic that Mudhoney was able to come up with this newfangled grunge sound, but it is not as good as something like Nevermind or Ten. I thought this album had a strong start, and kind of plateaued/declined over the second half. A good album, but there are much better grunge records out there. First isn't always best. For an album named after two effects pedals, this does not disappoint. Super fuzzy sounding early grunge band. I had not heard of these guys before, but it seems like they were pretty well known to contemporaries. The album itself is a little unpolished, recording sounds a little rough (although probably somewhat intentional). The grunge sound is unmistakable though, and clearly had a big influence on Nirvana. Short but sweet, the songs are well written and the atmosphere is nicely curated. A good listen, but probably not one I will listen to regularly. Also special shout-out to the album art, this might be one of the coolest covers I've ever seen. The styling fits perfectly and the photo really feels like it's alive. Messy, doesn't develop
I tried getting into Mudhoney several years ago before seeing them open for Pearl Jam. It was a little too raw for me then. But now I have a better appreciation for heavier and rougher stuff, so this was good.
Spent a lot of this album trying decide if this was good and in my wheelhouse or just a little too shouty. In the end I leaned more to the latter.
The first song was okay, like I enjoyed the guitar, but the vocals were iffy. Then it slowly got more grating, to the point where I was glad the album was over.
It's okay, I guess....but feel like it's too easy to just zone out; the songs all kind of sound the same. I'm enjoying No One Has. In N' Out Of Grace is cool too. But overall, nothing too special

I’ve always been interested in Mudhoney, knowing that they influenced a lot of bands I love. This was about what I expected. Catchy in spots, pre-radio “friendly” grunge that really exceeded my expectations in some areas. Not 100% sure I’d listen again, but I enjoyed it.
