Idk, I was around for Mudhoney, I was aware of them. They never peaked my interest. I was listening to Pixies, REM, Jane's Addiction at the time and this just doesn't hold up. It's like a shittier version of the Meat Puppets out something. I understand their influence, but I really never understood why anyone upholds the hype behind this band. Whatever. Noisy waste of time.

I understand it’s context in music, history and grunge and punk interplay, but I do not connect with this.
2 - There was nothing here to really grab me, so a lot of it ended up sounding like boring noise to me. There's not really a spark there, at least not that I could hear.

This album seems like something I would like but for some reason its just not doing it for me. Something about the heaviness of it just isn't quite clicking. The drumming and reverb guitar starting halfway through In n Out of Grace was pretty sweet though. Pretty much the only high point.
Utterly forgettable. More 60s inspired than a lot of the other grunge I’ve heard.
How nice that humanity's infinite creativity means there is music to precisely match whatever feeling, state or story you want. Playing this album by Mudhoney perfectly recreates and channels suffering, anguish, pain, chaos and some defiant anger. Some people may find this hits the sweet spot for them, for some catharsis. Probably best experienced LIVE in a dusty hot outdoor arena, but anywhere that smells of dirt, heat and sweat should do. No thanks
Another entry that shoes a certain preference of the 1990s and grunge, alternative and similar genres. Not a bad collection of songs per se but it's certainly no album I need to listen to before I die. Everything I heard here I heard in punk before.
I feel like punk and grunge are to genres that would always make sense together. Unfortunately not my taste. I prefer grunge that's slower and more plodding. But there are definitely parts in here that are good. Not AiC or Soundgarden good, but good. Top tracks: If I Think, In 'n' Out of Grace
reminded me of Nirvana's influences tm. crazy for a study day but also if it was one more day and i was done with exams, "twenty four" would be my anthem.

The only reason they didn’t get one star is because I listened to them in the 90s and know how influential they were. But the rawness has manifested itself into annoyance.
I get it, this is supposed to be a monumental landmark for the Seattle grunge scene but I can't even ironically try to tolerate this nauseating effigy of hard rock. More like a pile of grunt punk dog barf, and dogs do unironically love their own barf, so bon apetit.

I made sure I just listened to the 22 minute release of this album because I really don't like grunge. My prejudices remain intact. One or two tracks had me nodding along, the rest had me nodding off. 2/5. All grunge singers just remind me of the "Fight and win" guy, funnily enough he was from Seattle too... Is this just what they do up there?
I like big muff as much as the next guy, but when your big muff is coming in with some super fuzz, that’s just a step too far.

To the heroes who managed to listen to all 2+hours of this, I salute you. It is like all of grunge in one album, except grunge isn't my thing. 2/5.
I remember a lot of head shaking around Mudhoney as to why they didn't hit it big like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I think this album really captures for me why that was the case. It's not terrible, but it's also not particularly special either. The hooks are fine but simple and unremarkable, the musicianship is unremarkable, the vocals are unremarkable and a little whiny. It reminded me a bit of Riverbottom Nightmare Band without the charisma of Chuck Stoat and Stanley Weasel.

Solid proto grunge. A couple of tracks tip in to good, most are in the totally fine bracket.
Alice in Chains proved that the grunge-metal crossover can be brilliant. Mudhoney proved that the grunge-metal crossover can also be terrible. However, even at times during this mess, the crossover still works for me. The punk-esque singing does not work here even remotely though. All of the cornerstone grunge bands had great--iconic, even--singers, and the lack of one here severely draws back from the end product

Honestly, if Mark put as much effort and energy as he did in “In ‘N’ Out Of Grace” then this would’ve been a great EP, instead , his grating vocals in most of the songs ruin the band’s great instrumental backing, and I know that Mudhoney was one of the first bands to really embrace and popularise grunge as a genre, but it’s like listening to Slick Rick in 2023, you acknowledge how great, influential and innovative it must’ve been for the time, but the people that have come after have mastered the sound so much better. 2.5/5
I can see the genesis of grunge. I like the first song: Touch Me, I’m Sick. It’s fine for grunge but not 2 hours’ worth!
Started out liking it, but I soon caught on that this is nothing more than drunken horniness. Every song can be heard in the first 15-30 seconds. I don't recommend the deluxe edition. Then there was their cover of The Rose. That was pretty funny.

A 22 minute EP is about how much grunge I can tolerate in one go. Overall, this isn't bad and rocks quite hard. Coming out in 1988, this probably influenced the genre rather than following it, so I guess I can blame Mudhoney for inventing 'that' grunge vocal. I probably could have been into this in my teen years, but at my current age, it’s just not hitting.
I don't hate superfuzz or bigmuff pedals, but when you try to make your album sound like those effects it is going to be a noisy mess. Mudhoney succeeded in that part.
Luckily the actual album is only track 4 to 9

Well, what do you know? A second Mudhoney album. I didn't exactly rave about the first one we listened to, but this one seemed even less compelling. Not bad, mind you, but just not something that stands out for me. The best part was that it was 22 minutes long! And I was not tempted to listen to the extra 2 hours of the deluxe version, except for their version of "The Rose," which I thought might be fun. It wasn't.

Seattle grunge is interesting (and great) genre of music. But I don't fully hear it here. There are a few moments or tracks when you can start banging your head to, but the band is too embroiled in the act. 2.5/5.
It was meh. It wasn't bad but wasn't good. It was a little screaming a points. Thankfully it was short so no songs were skipped. Probably better than a 2 but I will round down.

Somewhere between punk, hardcore, '80s "hair" metal and lo-fi noise experimental styles of Sonic Youth. Easy to hear the connection and influence on grunge and Nirvana. Nonetheless, I don't like it much and thankful I only listened to the original 6 track LP plus The Rose to see how differently they interpreted it to Bette Midler's classic version (actually not too badly in their scuzzy rock style).

Punk, leuk. Ik ben niet vies van een beetje scheurende gitaren, en dit klinkt prima. Ik begin een patroon te vinden waarin teksten waarschijnlijk een zeer belangrijke rol spelen in muziek, en ik ben helaas iets meer sonisch ingesteld. Ik mis ongetwijfeld een hoop, het is wat het is. I’ve had to give this a few attempts to get into it. Much as I really like grunge, my head is not in this today, nor was it yesterday. The album title makes me laugh, and this is seminal material with good energy. But I think I like later grunge with a bit more refinement.
I have never been a fan of Mudhoney. To scream-y. The cover of The Rose was disappointing.
I saw these guys once in '92. I'd heard of Mudhoney, but didn't know their music. (On the plus side, a then-unknown band called The Flaming Lips opened up for them, and they were amazing.) The music was completely unmemorable. What was getting swallowed up by a mosh pit, getting kicked in the head by a flying mosher, and barely making it out of the pit with my glasses intact. Anyway, I've avoided Mudhoney's music ever since. So I was a little surprised that I found any enjoyment from this album (or EP) today. The songs for the most part lack any good hooks, but I did enjoy some of the guitar work and the energy was cool. Mark Arm, though, is completely lacking in charisma, nor does he really have the vocal chops to keep me interested. All of these songs would have been better if you simply you swapped him out in favor of Courtney Love. These guys really want to be The Stooges, which I can appreciate. But I don't know that they bring enough originality for that pursuit to be worthwhile. This is more of a 2.5 but I'm rounding down because I'm still annoyed by those moshers. Which isn't Mudhoney's fault, but fuck 'em.
Well I got through this multi-hour Mudhoney deluxe edition only because I was cooking late-night lasagna. By hour 2, I was like “do I like Mudhoney?” No. I don’t like their music. I do like the band name and appreciate grunge more than heavy metal. These are my only observations.
I’m not really buying what Mudhoney is selling.
This just didn't do it for me at all, which I'm surprised by, cos by all rights I should love it. Very grungy, very shouty, lo fi recording, and a big muff. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for it, but it just seemed to be basically the same thing over and over for a very long time.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say there were some superfuzzes and bigmuffs on this album! Mudhoney was always one of those bands to me that had a fan base I just knew were way too cool to talk to me. I guess that’s why I mostly stayed away from them. But that’s all different now. I’m a big boy, with a job! Didn’t care for this one too much. The mixing on these late 80s heavy albums just doesn’t resonate with me.

I like Nirvana, they had a spark (something special). These guys no doubt influenced them but I just can't find anything to really get into here. Middle of the road I'm afraid.

Dramatic and fun, though not always pleasant to listen to. Most notably influenced by the Ramones, with notes of stadium rock and and metal. Clearly an originator of Seattle Grunge as described in reviews, you can really hear the two pedals the album is named for
Superfuzz Bigmuff isn't good. Think it staves off a 1/5 because it doesn't annoy me but I don't like it much. It's prosaic, inauthentic and not very fun.
Best Song: Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More. Had a decent groove to it, even if the lyrics were a bit suspect. Worst Song: Halloween. Somehow the most amateurish of the whole lot. Overall: Massively overlong. Feels like a garage band saved up for some studio time and decided that if they paid to record something then it was going on the record.

Nice album. Sad and depressing grunge. What else you want? Unique and interesting ways to setup the progression of their songs. Wasn’t the typical verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus. It had good switch ups. Whiny like all other punk. Could tell nirvana banked off this as inspiration very much so. Sick as bass lines in some songs. Good quality. Just too one dimensional for me. Same effects every song. Same bland and drab feel. Same whine. Couldn’t really tell where some songs began and others ended

After listening to Cat Stevens, I felt like I was participating in the ice bucket challenge again - someone pouring ice water over my head with Mudhoney. While I can appreciate the band's use of Super-Fuzz and Big Muff pedals, listening to the same dirty guitars on every song was a little much for me on this particular album. I was not crazy about the lyrics either.
Sounds unfinished
Godfathers of grunge so I wanted to like this more. It was too much for me in youth. Too much for me as an elder millennial. Still not uncool enough in that cool way--even as I continually go back to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc. Maybe it was more a GenX thing--rebellion of the lumberjack and Microsoft kids before it was labelled.
I can see why people would like this but it's not exactly my cup of tea. No songs really jumped out at me. 5/10

this album wasn't terrible. it was okay but it was on the meh side. i liked how prominent the guitar sound was; it made the grunge and punk stand out. i don't know much nirvana but i can definitely see an early influence happening on this album as well. as a side note, i can see how this album wouldn't come to very much commercial success, but the critical acclaim this album received later was remarkable!

Well, they sure got the title correct. Sounds like a record that a few sixteen-year-olds made after they pooled their resources, headed down to Guitar Center, and bought a Big Muff pedal. I mean, I guess it's cool. But I also think it feels like "you had to be there." I wasn't. In 1988 I wasn't thinking about any music that wasn't on the radio or being played at home by my dad. Mudhoney didn't exist in either of those realms.

Wanted to like this more, but it was just a little too sloppy and noisy for me to enjoy for more than a few songs at a time.
People seem to over praise this album simply because Kurt Cobain wrote it down on a list of his all time favorite albums back in 1993. Some believe that list helps explain Cobain's troubled genius (He also listed REM's "Green", which is probably REM's 10th best album). There's a school of thought that marks this album as the birth of grunge. That's entirely possible, but that doesn't mean it's the best of the genre. If you listen on Spotify, your reward comes after the album, as the algorithm offers up far better grunge songs.
I think it's safe to say that if this album was actually as long as the remastered edition on Spotify I would have definitely been less in favor of this one. But in moderation, it wasn't too bad.
Cool riffs but not memorable otherwise

Favorites- track 4, track 6, track 8 Least favorites- track one ,track 5 pretty good. not something I would go out of my way to listen to but pretty interesting. lots of songs with minimal vocal. The ones that did were very good though. If I think, need and hate the police are my personal favorites. I would give it maybe a 2.2 it’s good but not for me.

This is a tolerable EP. I guess it's on the list because it was a big influence on Kurt Cobain and the whole grunge sound. From my hindsight perspective, it's pretty forgettable. In fact, I've listened to it 2.5 times and can't remember much about it. 2.5

These guys are like the precurser to Nirvana, and they were fine. Nirvana is a bit better in my opinion. The grunge sound is here, but none of the songs stand out with a memorable set of lyrics or melody line.

Sorry, I tried to find some redeeming qualities on this one but came up empty.
Disqualification. An EP isn't an album. But if we ARE going to start including non-albums on this list, then I have a list of my own of at least three dozen albums that we've been forced to listen to that should have been swapped out for their corresponding singles since those were the only "must-hear" parts of what were otherwise miserably unnecessary experiences. Oh, and all 6 of the tracks on this EP suck, so we can just outright remove this entry from the list while we're changing the rules and fixing things up.

PSA: This album is not 2 hours long, it's 20 minutes. For some bloody reason they've put the actual album hidden like 4 songs into the only version on Spotify. I was smart enough to look up in the book how much I had to listen to, but just letting anyone else know x I'll dock it a point for that, but it's so sonically displeasing. Seeing 1988 I’m scared. Buuuut idk it’s ok so far from listening to the first 30 seconds. We shall see. Idk it’s kinda shit tbh. Recording quality and mix is hard to listen to. Honestly, fuck this website’s album suggestions. Majority of this music is shit. Cmon guys.
This is just very run of the mill barebones grunge for the most part, the final two tracks are pretty decent but those are all that’s keeping it from a 1 star cause i got almost nothing from this. At least the EP was short so that’s something. Side note: this was annoying to listen to in its original EP form on Tidal, cause theres only a deluxe edition on there and the original 6 tracks arent the first 6, they like tracks 4-10 for some bizarre reason. Changed my mind, first 1 star rating, congrats.
man grunge mostly sucks. I cant imagine how insufferable these bands and fanbases must have been in their heyday. Tons of distortion, raw vocals, some pretty drums here and there, actually. But sometimes its like they just want to be loud and obnoxious because "fuck you" or whatever. Like they say in Chain That Door, "you made me feel like a big time loser" and boy howdy do I ever after listening to this.

Not a genre I enjoy and nothing seems to be changing that yet. Very bored of it by the end and found it hard to engage with fully. I obviously didn’t listen to the full deluxe edition, there was no way.

Good lord. I understand why stuff like this makes the list (and that some people really like it) – because I’d never be exposed to it otherwise, and my goal is to broaden my musical awareness. And now that I’m aware of this, I’m pretty confident I don’t need to hear it again. First 3 mins of In N Out of Grace were good, then it went right back into nope mode.

I went into this album knowing very little about Mudhoney, but judging by the cover I was expecting some grungy, indie chaos—and Superfuzz Bigmuff certainly brings the grunge. My first impression was how much they sound like a rough mix between Nirvana and The Stooges. They’re not on the same level musically, but it’s easy to hear how they influenced the grunge scene that came after, especially Nirvana. That said, grunge really isn’t for me. There’s a lot of noise, shouting, and distortion, but not much melody or storytelling to hold onto. I can see why fans of heavier rock would enjoy it, but I found it one-dimensional and, honestly, a bit dull. I won’t be listening to this one again. Favourite track: I honestly couldn’t pick one. Least favourite track: Pretty much the whole album. Album artwork: A cool, gritty cover that fits the sound perfectly.
Didn't really give it a chance. Got four songs in and thought if i wanted this sort of thing I would just listen to Nirvana Could see myself giving it a go again in future.

Verstimmte Gitarren und gröhlende Jungs. Ich verstehe, dass man als Mitt-zwanziger gerne mal im Rock'n Roll Zirkus dabei sein möchte. Aber da finde ich die Attitüde des Punk ehrlicher. Grunge bleibt weiter ein Rätsel für mich.

This kind of scream-y vocal style just doesn't do it for me, and while the drums are impressive, they ultimately just gave me a headache. Really not for me.

1/10 Feel harsh giving out my first 1/10 especially when I haven't listened to the full album but this just does absolutely nothing for me. Sounds a lot like what an album named after fuzz pedals might be expected to I suppose. When the first two songs are the two most played and I hate both of them it feels like a waste of time to try and listen to the whole thing. So far this project seems to be teaching me that the only genre I really dislike is grunge which is a bit of a surprise. Listens: 0.3

This whole album was such a tediously mediocre experience that I barely managed to get to the end. It was two hours of, possibly, live music during a concert, for some reason, and pretty much all of the songs were very much meh. There was basically no difference between the songs, there were a couple of alright ones but if you just had this playing in the background, it was just noise and it was also very stressful when trying to do work and focus properly, as this was just stress-inducing noise in the background, so I had to lower it a little bit. Overall, I wouldn't say that it was decent but there were some alright songs, so my rating was originally not going to be one star but holy moly, the last song was so painfully long that I got so annoyed that the album was still going. It was great when I saw that I was on the last song but then it went for a bit too long and turns out it's 14 minutes. The end of the album made me feel great - I was so happy that it was finally over.

There is nothing worse than not really liking an album and then finding out the majority of the album is those same songs over and over just sounding slightly different but still the same. And the whole thing is over 2 hours long. Brutal. This was not my thing.
I tried, but this isn’t for me. I just couldn’t find any angle to connect with the album. Coming from that context there’s not much to say. Out of the original and deluxe editions the only song I like is “No One Has”. It’s probably no surprise; it’s a one out of five stars for me.
