Fine enough but not doin the deluxe

Flott tónlist en rúmir 2 tímar er fullmikið

Sterkari en ég bjóst við. Ágætis töffleiki í þessu.

Nice distortion sound, but the songs are so so.

Ist gar kein Album. War in Ordnung, Gitarrensound mochte ich.

This one feels a little ahead of its time, very 90s grunge. A lot of emotion in his voice

Early grunge goodness, but not something I'd likely revisit. 3.25/5.

Listened while playing with my daughter. Listened to the Deluxe version up to and including Halloween. I need to preface this by saying that Grunge is really not my thing. I get how this album paved the way for Nirvana and Pearl Jam to break out into the mainstream and I totally hear and understand the importance. I get it all, I just didn't particularly enjoy listening to it.

Good stuff. Not blown away by it, but enjoyed the listen.

Punk! Grunge! Seattle! Nirvana! Smashing Pumpkins! Metallica! Anarchy! Angst! A Seattle-centered collision of Hendrix's funky guitar sounds, at times (Mud live from Berlin), with echoes of Kurt Cobain's tired, frustrated voice. The album feels like it's about the slog that is life under a failing, capitalist government. I can't say this album is a cathartic experience, but I appreciate its honesty.

i'm not huge on grunge but i can't deny the energy here. facemelting in parts. stays close to the sludge metal, punk, and noise rock roots of the sound. album cover has incredible amounts of aura. deserves to be one of the 1001? i think so

I didn’t love this album but I understand how influential it was as it was part of the birth of the Seattle scene and ushered in a whole new sound and style. Without this, would Nirvana, among others, have reached the same heights? I also sense this influenced other bands with big breakouts in the 90s outside the grunge scene (one song made me think of Metallica’s black album recorded two years later).

Listening to grunge while i make my homemade granola

Hearing those messy and noisy guitars remind me of Nirvana. Goes to show how local scenes influence each other. This album has a pretty sick cover. (3.5)

Mudhoney's first single: August 1988. Nirvana's: November 1988. Seems like the two biggest differences were Kurt's love of the Beatles and the fact that they had Butch Vig producing.

it wasnt anything really special. Wasnt a fan of the vocal, where it was good it was very good, decent drummer, some great guitar. However where it was bad it was utter crap.

Great album. This is a 3,7

Superfuzz Bigmuff sounds like the Seattle grunge scene being born. I'd never actually listened to Mudhoney, but I knew them by reputation, mostly through being a big Nirvana fan. These songs don't have Nirvana's melodies, but the shared DNA is obvious: the irony, the humour, the rejection of 80s polish, and that anarchic punk attitude toward rawness over perfection. This is scrappy, distorted, and deliberately rough. At times it veers into The Stooges territory, but on tracks like "Need" you can hear that familiar grunge guitar tone taking shape: blown-out fuzz, half-committed vocals, sounding like they might trash the stage at any moment. The standout is "If I Think": quiet–loud–quiet dynamics, fragile, non-committal vocals giving way to guttural screams, and a guitar solo that sounds like it was played blindfolded. It's messy, uncomfortable, and brilliant. It's fitting that the record closes with the "we wanna be free..." sample from "The Wild Angels", the same one Andrew Weatherall famously used for Primal Scream's "Loaded". But where "Loaded" turns it into an optimistic call to action, Mudhoney use it more ironically, less a manifesto than a shrug - cynical, sarcastic and very Seattle. 3.5 stars

I've heard of these guys. This was actually Kurt Cobain's influence. And you can really hear it. Cool stuff. I can definitely hear the early grunge

I was aware of Mudhoney, having been a fan of Nirvana in my teens. Took a few songs for his vocals to hit, but once they did I could find myself listening to this again.

Punk will be punk but this one wasn’t too bad. Especially comparing to other punk albums from this list (looking at you The Witch Trials). Still, I wasn’t suffering while listening to this, and when I limited my listening to the original tracks, it was a good length.

Mudhoney: Superfuzz Bigmuff Superfuzz Bigmuff is a relentless exercise in raw, sonic aggression. While this specific brand of garage-grunge sits outside my personal rotation, there is no denying the technical power behind the production. The "abuse" of the drums and the thick, distorted guitar layers create a dense, high-energy atmosphere that defines the Seattle sound. While the lyrics are often buried beneath the sludge—making them difficult to connect with—tracks like "Mudride" showcase a slower, more deliberate musicianship that stands out. Ultimately, it is a sonically impressive document of its era, even if it lacks the lasting appeal to warrant a return listen.

Correcto

Was this the start of grunge? Maybe. Definitely had the makings at least. It's a little disorganized, but loud and brash. It's no surprise that the acts that arose from this scene afterwards became a tad more polished, so I guess some of these groups owe a little bit to Mudhoney.

Quit playing in the mud, honey. Listens to the 23 minute original version.

Grungey grunge grunge First song is good, the rest is alright

Litt for raspete, kanskje

It's a little too rough for me to really get into it. I love the bands that played alongside these guys and the bands inspired by them but this doesn't quite do it for me.

Good pre grunge

Not my favorite but certainly the Mud Honey album that everyone should hear.

Solid, fuzzy, loud. It’s loose and unhinged grunge all the way down. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Touch Me I'm Sick - Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More - Hate the Police

Really sick guitar sounds and some tunes that really rip. I had to read up on the album — apparently it was originally a 6-song EP (tracks 7-12). I liked those songs the best. The other ones sounded mostly like you’d expect leftovers or B-sides to sound. Anyway, great sound, but simply too uneven in quality.

Some days feel chaotic and you want someone somewhere to be in control, and some days are chaotic and you want someone to get it and not be overwhelmed by it, maybe even find a way to laugh at it even if they're not able to totally rise above it. This album fit in that spot for me yesterday, feeling like a proper soundtrack to a world where the president flaunts his cruelty and corruption and tells us the economy is just fine as we're hustling every day to be able to afford fewer and fewer groceries. It feels like the screaming heart of grunge that more mainstream bands were able to smooth out enough to find a larger audience.

I get it. I obviously hear the reason why this album is here. I hear the Nirvana. I even hear Hole. We know who they inspired. My issue is that every Nirvana song I don’t like sounds like the songs on this album. It’s noise and it makes sense but it’s not jaw dropping to me and that’s what I need. Choice cut: Mudride

Really wanted to like this one more, but honestly rather forgettable.

Good fun grunge

I appreciate their influence, but Mudhoney has never been for me.

I feel like given this was a major influence to the grunge scene, even predating Nirvana’s Bleach, I would have liked this more. I do love how harsh the guitar sounds, which gives the album that raw edge only a studio can hate. But this never really clicked with me. It doesn’t really have any of the hooks or charm grunge would eventually have; a factor probably given by its age. It feels like an album I only appreciate due to its influence. I think it does deserve a spot here, but can’t say I was crazy for this. Favorite track: In ‘n’ Out of Grace Other hits: Chain That Door, Need, No One Has

I can see how this inspired the greats. But this is not great. There’s a reason Mudhoney never hit it big while the bands that followed them did. They just weren’t quite there.

Yup this is Grunge...

I had never heard this one before. Raw and jagged, it had some solid cuts. Not sure it's going to go in rotation any time soon, but glad you served it up.

not for me, but if you like this probs cool

Can hear how they influenced 90s grunge and alt rock bands that I love, and enjoyed the mixture of punk-grunge. But also, a lot of screaming

I like grunge but eh

Great guitar sounds but not really something I liked enough to listen to again.

Nirvana similarities. Like Nirvana, The Stooges and early californian punk all rolled into one.

3.5 nice guitar tone

Originally thought it was pretty mediocre, but ended up really liking it for background music while running

A bit more screaming than I’d like but the songs had a nice arc and displayed some pleasant harmonies and chord progressions. More musical than most screams-adjacent music I’ve heard.

Pretty good early grunge paving the way for the rest, didn't hear any hits, but enjoyed it

I think I really wanted NOT to like this because the selections I've been getting from the 1001 list lately have leaned toward late-80s/early-90s groups that never quite seemed to live up to their promise but were obviously obsessions for the compiler of this list in his younger years. But man, with every new song I kept getting a little more hooked. Nirvana may have become the worldwide phenomenon, and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden may have maintained a higher quality of music over a longer span of time, but it's not too big a stretch to say that none of those groups might have existed as they did without this group and this album paving the way. If this is not quite as defining of Grunge as NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS was of Punk, it's only about half a step below that. Their cover of "The Rose" here is SIMPLY amazing. Yeah, this is definitely an album I'm glad I heard before I died.

Some fine music

There’s a big punk spirit and energy on this distortion-heavy, grungy collection of songs. I really liked another Mudhoney album on this list, “Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge.” This one proves they had talent from the very start. The songs feel messier than they actually are. There’s depth and complexity in the chaos. It’s definitely richer and more sophisticated than your standard punk album.

Pretty cool punk rock album. Some of the songs are catchy, some of them are a little grating, but that's not surprising for a band that's all about fuzz. Definitely raw and edgy in a good way. I didn't love the album but I didn't dislike it either, just kind of down the middle for me.

noisey but not in a super satisfying way for me. it's not bad, but not really an album i can see myself coming back to. i have liked other mudhoney releases, so i'm thinking this one may just not be for me.

I listened to the original track list only. It was okay

It took me a while to find the actual EP, hidden amongst the massive reissue. I can see why it's on this list. It's aggressive. Probably a big deal in the 80s on Sub Pop, it also probably sits highly in many influences of those who came after it. I own a Brubeck punk album that I really like. I think it makes a really bold statement. But, I'm not sure I'd flaunt it for everyone. It's a little piece of punk rock that was a big deal to me in 2002. I think that's what this is. At least from the one listen I had. 3 stars.

You’ve just been out skateboarding with some friends and now you’re home to put on your tightest black jeans and your cut-off denim vest which has spikes around the shoulders. A couple of quick jack-and-cokes before putting on your black high top Chuck Taylor’s and heading to a gig to call the band posers and intimidate some preppy pop fans.

rock and roll. enjoyed the first listen but then started paying attention to the lyrics the next go around

An interesting artifact from grunge’s primordial state.

It was okay, not really my vibe

Not in my top 5 Seattle grunge bands, but I respect that they were in the mix early.

this is the new meaning of grunge to me, get outta here soundgarden and nirvana. i feel like the genre kinda needed more energy and more intensity so it's crazy that it's gone the OTHER way. i do prefer soundgarden over this tho.

For an early, refined but raw grunge album, it is fairly good. I'm quite happy with the album length, being 21 minutes (I did listen to three songs that were included in other releases).

solid but nothing crazy

Cool to see the beginning of the grunge era. Not as catchy as some of the other albums in this genre, not that it needs to be. 7/10

I would have listened to this in the past. I like a few songs off it but overall it's a bit rough. Stand out songs - Touch me I'm sick, No one has

Thanks for Pearl Jam.

It's noisy. It sounds like a lot of other bands. I did not listen to all the demos and extra nonsense on the extended/deluxe edition, and it still almost outstayed it's welcome. I didn't hate it; I wouldn't rush back to hear it again. Best song: in 'n' out of grace

jag går ju alltid på om att albumen är för långa så nu kan jag ju inte annat än att ge plus för att det är typ 22 minuter, originalutgåvan iaf. en jävligt stark trea.

A solid grunge album. I found myself drumming along to a number of the tracks, so I must have found the music catchy. I can’t get in the head of people who do this project and manage to deeply analyze the lyrics for every song. Sometimes the music can just be catchy and not too memorable, that’s how I felt about Mudhoney.

3- Stars (7/15)

Kind of an interesting artifact for punk transitioning to grunge, but I can't say I particularly enjoyed listening to it. 2.6

Precursor to Nirvana but only half as good 3.1

Not bad

Long album inc live tracks. Good.

This was pretty rockin and props to its major influence in the Seattle grunge scene. Definitely has some Nirvana vibes. I also appreciate that I can mostly hear the lyrics. It was missing something for me to really connect to and want to keep listening, but still a solid album.

post-punk proto-Nirvana

Favorite Track: Touch Me I’m Sick

Loud and aggressive the beginnings of grunge are obvious here 3.5*

Some of the better early grunge I've heard. Maybe the earliest grunge I've heard now that I think of it. Raw and edgy but not grating.

Me gustó me gusta mucho este estilo de música seguramente se parece a Nirvana (una de mis bandas fav) me gustó

good distillation of grunge. similar to the other one, the allegiance to macho rock keeps it from being something I really enjoy

Mudhoney delivers a raw and gritty dose of grunge that oozes underground energy and distortion. The record thrives on its attitude and noise, and it’s that uncompromising approach that makes it both fascinating and difficult. The sound is consistently loud and fuzzy, and while that works well in short bursts, especially on tracks like “Touch Me I’m Sick”, it can be hard to stay engaged for the entire release. There’s not much variation, and it takes a certain love for noise rock to truly enjoy the whole thing. Still, there’s something charming about its imperfections. It’s an honest snapshot from a time before grunge went mainstream, and it deserves credit for that. 3/5

Definitely deserves a place on this list. Grunge before grunge existed.

Highlights: Chain That Door, In 'n' Out of Grace. In a nutshell: the EP that changed it all. Mudhoney guitarist Steve Turner considers this EP to be a studio album. Music writers and critics would argue that this is an early- not if THE FIRST- grunge album. So I'm still going to review it like an LP. I was anticipating Dinosaur Jr loud. Yep. Was expecting Sonic Youth distortion. Sometimes (Daydream Nation was recorded and released at the same time as SFBM). Loud-quiet-loud made famous by Pixies. Uh-huh. But it's different. This was a first time listen for me. SFBM has a unique intensity and a sound which was fine tuned and diluted after its release. If you love noise rock and grunge but haven't listened to a note of Mudhoney, stop and change that. For other listeners, go in with an open mind. SFBM is the roots of grunge and it showed the world a new way to use guitar effects pedals. Overall: 6/10

All I could find was the deluxe version, which had a few more interesting songs than what was on the original release. But rating it from the original release, my best description of the album is they sound like a really good opening act just aching to be the headliner. They're not too good, and not too bad. as such, I'm rating this one a 3

Wanted to like it but kinda could care less. Best song to be honest was the Dicks - Hate the police cover but other than that nothing stood out to me.

3.4 stars. Angry early-grunge garage punk. Dirty guitar effects, driving drumming, heavy bass, silly over the top lyrics sung with angry vocals. Standout "Touch Me I'm Sick"

Meh. Couple of fun tracks, but not worth a full album.

Not bad. (Note: Listened to the OG 1988 6-track EP, not the rerelease)

Grungy but not great grunge

only listening to the original release which were 6 songs. that’s the one that’s submitted in the book. “mudride” was a genuinely great song that i really enjoyed! “no one has” is actually good! “if i think” i kind of half enjoyed? the non noisy parts anyways xD mudride honestly reminds me a bit of my bloody valentine. loved it. second listen in the evening on headphones: first song kind of half slaps. mudrain still great. no on has, really didn’t enjoy tonight. if i think, enjoyed this one! 😆 very difficult EP to rate. 2.7/5

In generale non mi ha lanciato troppo, stile Nirvana ma peggio.

Expected to like it more than I actually did.

Big Muff is my favorite fuzz pedal. Nice early grunge, just not all the songs were that great. Loved the energy & sound tho.

Keep seeing grunge references but I feel like this is more of a punk album than anything. Raw sound with tons of overdrive. Something about the singer just annoyed me and brought this down from a 4 star. They covered the Dicks which is awesome.

I don’t know about this one

Album 816 of 1089 Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff (1988) Rating : 2.75 / 5 A raw, grimy blast of fuzzed-out energy that clearly set the stage for what came next. There’s something exciting about how unpolished and chaotic it is, but it feels more like a rough sketch than a fully realized sound. I respect the influence, but bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden took this foundation and built something much more powerful and refined.

Classic Uk punk in the non punk era of the late eighties. Some interesting songs, but starts to sound like one big song after a while.

Was expecting worse, but some decent tracks here — 2.5 rounded up.

this is going to be a short one. obviously I know touch me I’m sick. I’m a big ‘This Band Could Be Your Life’ fan as an authoritative tome. I only like about half the bands in it and Mudhoney sit on the border, I understand their importance to the Canon but they do not charm me like Dinosaur Jr or the Pixies do. This is fine, but lack a certain spark for me.

Their sound definitely could be a 4, but in practice I only particularly liked one song.

There was some good stuff in here and you can definitely see where it influenced others. But overall it was a little all over the place so I’ll label it just decent.

The energy was on point from track 1, but it was only until No One Has that I really started ROCKIN. There's some very good stuff on here, but there's also a lot of ehhh which holds it back from a 4. Standouts: No One Has, If I Think, In 'n' Out Of Grace

This album intrigued me and I think deserves more consideration. I wasn't into it at first, but the farther I got the more interesting ideas they had, especially the last song. I might like more of their music better in the future.

Im only listening to the first release of this album. The ep version Decent

From the album cover I thought this band would be women and I was a bit disappointed. I listened to all 2 hours of the album which is honestly impressive but I think it was fine

I liked this album and then it felt repetitive

Cool sound, fuzzy, grungy, but a little boring. This must have gone hard in 88 though.

Respect for pushing punk and rock to new heights but not something I want to listen to often.

Obviously you can hear the seeds of Nirvana. If Kurt Cobain was singing I would've like this quite a bit more into it. Still some good stuff. The guitar and drums on In N Out of grace is excellent

Some interesting stuff but overall very angsty. Ideal for a teenager in turmoil

It was alright but probably too long as it was hard to keep the enthusiasm going that far.

Raw and heavy proto-grunge stuff. 3.5/5

dit begon als zeer goede grunge en strandde in de gelijkvormige brij die grunge is... 3.5 sterren

Crazy to finally listen to a full album by the band I primarily know for making a cameo in Black Sheep. Good fun. Favorite: “You Got It (Keep It Outta My Face)”

C'était ben correct mais juste une toune ç'aurait été assez. Je comprends le côté pionniers mais est-ce que c'est vraiment bon? J'entends plus de Super Fuzz que de Big Muff.

Grungy as hell and I'm here for it. There's a bit of filler but for the most part it's just some good grunge. A little simple but does well for what it is. 7/10

Seminal. Garagem. Big muff. 3 estrelas

I like this. One of the few 80s albums I've heard that doesn't sound dated.

Pretty good

i didn't know about this band, it is nice to know them.

Dingy, noises and punk. It has its moments, but not my favorite thing to listen to. Think I’ll give it another spin sometime, but it’s okay overall.

Pretty fun grungy music.

I love the crunchy guitar. This was a good album. 1001 album worthy: yes - 86/157

05.22.2025 3☆/5

Gen X was onto something. The cover of this album rules.

I think style doesn't mean repetition even on context of one album. After 10 songs I thought these songs starts to be rather repetitive. Good album though

Start was fresh and fast and then it got slower. Too long album, otherwise ok.

Noisy punk music that later evolved into "grunge" elsewhere, it's not as fuzzy as the title suggests, but it has it's moments. Not a huge fan of Mudhoney, but I've yet to check out their whole catalog. There is something intriguing about their music, but not enough to grab me with the on the spot, so it takes a while. Maybe.

Frum grunge. Upprunalega platan bara 23 mín. sem hentaði grungeþoli mínu vel. Allt umfram það veruleg skerðing á lífsgæðum.

Better than I anticipated (far superior to EGBDF). Still not nearly my fav grudge type album. 3/5

Some punk

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: If I Think, Halloween It took me a few listens - actually actively listening helped too - to warm up to Mudhoney. Their sound is raw and bordering on scream-o music which I am not super keen on, but the songs that have actual singing and melodies and good guitar riffs were decent. Halloween was a great track - a good way to close out the album. This is now my 3rd or 4th Grunge album. There are miles between this album and for example, Garbage's self-titled album. Its interesting how both can be classified as Grunge.

TWO HOURS AND FIFTEEN MINUTES?!?!?!?

Wasn’t bad. Prolly won’t go looking for it tho.

Touch Me I'm Sick is a great song but the rest of the album is a little "meh"

Rather solid.

Sikkk. Giving yung bjordal. Seattle punk excuse you why am I hearing this for the first time

This is grunge before grunge was cool. I can hear the precursors to the bigger bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden but it still has a rough, punk-like quality in many of the songs that isn't heard in those larger, more polished bands. It's pretty interesting stuff.

Not the worst but I wouldn't revisit it. But I think its absolutely critical to appreciate where and when this came out and the seismic musical and cultural shift it helped to usher in. In that context its maybe one of the most important albums ever.

ok. anyway

this was somewhat interesting as a precursor to and influence on nirvana, but it basically just sounds like bleach without that same focus and oomph. i did like the callback to "sweet young thing ain't sweet no more," which i hadn't realized was a reference when nirvana did it. anyway, some good tracks and messages here, but the 2h15m version of the album on spotify is just too much and it all runs together into a punky, grungy mess. favorites: touch me i'm sick, sweet young thing ain't sweet no more, in 'n' out of grace, hate the police

The guitars are sick as hell, and they would sound even better with proper songwriting

You can totally hear how they influenced bands that followed them, there's even once or twice I heard riffs Nirvana lifted. Unfortunately for Mudhoney the world never found them as interesting as the so-called grunge bands they helped spawn. And sadly I'm in the same camp. I like their music fine, but prefer the same style as done by other artists. That's at least partly due to Mark Arm's vocals, which I only appreciate intermittently. If all I cared about was the music, I'd rate this one higher. P.S. I didn't listen to the full deluxe version, so this review is for the main album only.

Probably a blast live

Nothing special

Pretty good punk rock! I don't hate it!

Unnecessary long.

Ehhhhh, glad I realized there was an EP from 1988 hiding inside the deluxe edition from 2008 available on my streaming app. I get this is formative, and it had some moments, but I just did not click with it.

Guy's like, really into mud, huh? 2.5 rounded up, at least it was kind of strange and interesting

Came off as hangry. Not as much fun to list to for whatever reason

A good album but pretty long!

the middest of grunge

not for me

Not unlistenable but sure as hell way too long. I’m gonna give it a three but only because the original release is 23 minutes. Whoever made this album 135 minutes should be sent to the guillotines.

I thought they were funny and chaotic

Damn, really long album

Good stuff

Lite väl stökigt stundvis, men otroligt i små doser

They basically take Stooges punk rock and cross it with Sonic Youth to make something sounding rocky but also hazily disaffected. And there you have grunge. I am not sure whether I am looking out for the Nirvana link, but I don't think you have to look very hard at all. It smacks you directly in the face on the opening track 'Need'. So you have an important album which birthed an important rock scene at a particular place and time. That scene would itself be highly influential. But as an album, although I admire its punchiness, it's a collection of quite bog-standard indie rock songs with a couple of standouts. It's solid. But guess you needed to be there. Fantastic album cover though.

3 stars

Great pedal, ok album.

Superfuzz buzzmuff painting a picture for the upcoming grunge revolution.

good but forgettable except that one song

I only knew this band by name...actually thought they were from the 70s, so I had no idea what I was in for. Pretty satisfying loud grungy rock with some sick guitars and drumming.

Solid grunge, a bit forgettable though.

Kinda funny. Not a huge punk fan though. I'll listen again to it sometime, but it's not gonna be high in my playlists

Typical second tier grunge

Kind of cool. Maybe a precursor to nirvana. Some nice beats but mostly fuzz.

135 minutes jumping. Really not my jam, but by all means I enjoyed a bit. Not sure I will be listening to it again though. 7/10

Decent rock album 6/10

there was a time when i would have been all over this but that time is long gone and i have unfortunately grown old and up

There's a frustrating number of different versions and track listings, I did Deluxe Edition (the one shown here) that had 14 songs? Anyways it generally sounded good, like a more punk version of Nirvana. Fav track: 'Need'.

Bedrock for grunge times to come Seattle is where they came from Taking the members to other places they remained firmly underground So many familiar faces New bands they have gone and found

This is so raw it's almost bleeding. Proto-grunge. A little too proto for my tastes, but given it's importance/influence, it's evident why this is on the list.

Didn't really care for the singing but the back ing instrumentals were sick

What did you call me?? 3.

Not bad. 3.5

Enjoyable 3.5

If you’re going to name your EP after two guitar pedals, it better sound distorted as hell. I am pleased to report this sounds distorted as hell It’s fun, it’s loud, it’s rowdy. It’s definitely grunge but the more punk and garage rock side of grunge, without the massive hooks or filthy grooves that various bands added into the sound over the next few years - just that searing delinquent energy. I appreciate it and it is definitely fun but just doesn’t do a lot for me

Grunge-Rock, nett gemacht. Nichts störendes, aber auch keine Highlights, die heraus stechen. 3/5

263/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Hard and heavy late 80s fuzz rock. Touch Me I'm Sick is the opening track, and the highlight of the album; although it's pretty good.

Some early grunge... too raw, still listenable

A kind of Nirvana wannabe, Mudhoney brings in "Superfuzz Bigmuff" a good compilation of songs to pass the time but that eventually ends up getting boring because besides lacking originality, it lacks versatility and ends up becoming a one-note album. But if you don't mind that, then this won't be a problem.

Nice grunge, it started to grow on me after a few songs. I don't like it quite as much as Nirvana or Soundgarden, but Mudhoney was first and they deserve credit for that. The songs are nice and energetic with echoes of punk and Black Sabbath.

This was crazy ahead of its time. I was expecting it to be a crappy punk-purist style album, but it surprised me how much I ended up liking it. Very punchy. Favorites were Touch Me I'm Sick and Need

It’s very raw and rough around the edges but has plenty of energy to it. Touch Me I’m Sick is great. The rest if fine and a reasonable listen.

Not my thing, but very influential both in grunge and in the fact it signaled how long 90s albums would become :/

this is what they call "high tension" lol

3.5, cool influence on many bands I like, but probably won’t listen again

Grimy, rough around the edges and it kinda works.

The first grunge band? Noisy, grungey and still slightly melodic. I liked

Just good old grunge

Good thing to zone out to while driving for sure

Sounds like a superfuzz bigmuff, if it weren't for them I might not even know what that is. I was introduced to this sound by bands like Kyuss and The Melvins but they were probably introduced to it by Mudhoney. I have heard people exclaim that Mudhoney deserves the notoriety that Nirvana achieved, but its rarely the groundbreaker who makes the big bucks, its the first copycats. With that being said, after listening to the album it is a good album but when looking back through all of the giant albums by other bands that followed in the same vein, it doesn't stand out too much except for the fact that it was one of the first. I do like it though and am more impressed with it knowing that they were on the forefront of this sound a lot of us grew up with.

Pretty good, though a fair amount of 'noise'.

Proto-Grunge, def some Stooges influence here. 14 year old me would have loved this.

Early grunge, not bad

Interesting. It turns out I wasn't a grunge fan when I was a youth. I was a *Nirvana* fan. Good to know.

To start with, the tracklisting on Spotify is very confusing. 'Superfuzz Big Muff' started as an EP, turned into an album (with previously released singles rounding out the tracklisting, and later turned into a deluxe edition with 20 additional songs and the order completely changed. If you want the original version only, focus on tracks 4 to 9. These are (in my opinion) the highlights of the entire release. Maybe the early singles were Mudhoney trying to find their sound. But among the EP tracks, you really hear the beginnings of the murky grunge sound. Kurt Cobain would have surely taken notice.

Second album on the list by Mudhoney, this time not even the full LP, which is very surprising. I reckon that the appearance of this ep is purely historical - it's not a very good record, but it started a new genre and inspired sound of many new bands. So points for that, but otherwise very average album.

The opening lines of the Spotify version of this album are "I'm a Creep"

Grunge has never been my scene, the other album by them on this list i've had didn't do much for me either. Not noisy or interesting enough for my style of rock.

Clearly should have a spot on this list. I like the energy but the rough edges are little too rough for me. But I can certainly hear what people liked so much.

Why do I like this and not like, say, Hüsker Du? I have no idea. That’s the privilege of the listener :)

A 28 minute album that's only available on Spotify as a 'deluxe' edition that's over 2 hours long. Fuck off. As for the actual music, it's pretty bland, middle of the road grunge. Nothing particularly good or bad about it. I wouldn't cross the room to turn it off, that's about it. Also. Muffs.

Hidden review, hidden review 5/10 Fav tracks - Touch Me I'm Sick, Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More, Chain That Door, No One Has, Burn It Clean, Least Fav - idek, this album is 2hours 15 minutes and I liked 4 songs off it

didn't know there were EPs where on the 1001 albums list i mean its alright

Kinda cool but way too repetitive 6.6/10

Seattle Grunge. Pretty hard rock, punk rock, not massively melodic. Not my cup of tea, was not feeling it. Proto-Nirvana, roots obvious. But noisier and edgier. Great drummer.

I like the rawness. For a time, these guys were on top of the world. I miss those days when rock was still alive.

Didn't finish this one, boring proto-grunge.

I get its importance, and it's enjoyable, but does an EP really belong on this list?

Noisy, raw, distorted; brilliant. Overwhelming to listen to regularly but I love blasting "Touch Me, I'm Sick" to piss people off.

2.5 - Struggled with this. It just creeps up into the 3's but barely

Terrible album name, bad band name, but decent sound. Half punk, half grunge, this album feels like it was on the brink of some musical revolution. It doesnt quite tip the scales though, and never reaches the heights that are required to be considered great. I liked No One Has the most here.

Totally grungified!

Interesting album to see that very early start to shift from hard rock to grunge. That said, I like EGBDF a lot more

A strong start, and then it became passable background music. Nothing stood out and nothing offended.

Kaks hymy ukkoa ja hujapäettäen lihhoo... Albumin suurudesta vain orginal 28 min.. Niinkuin objektivisti.. 28 min Noista 28 minuuutista tuli mieleen perusjauhannan ongelmat... Hankala tykätä kun kuullostaa niin perus perus lässätätytykseltä...

It's a fine grungey-sounding album. That's it. That's all I have to say.

Another hard rock record that I wish I had listened to in my teens. Cool!

Solid grunge fare.

I like this album better than Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, but it’s still not incredibly interesting.

Proto Grunge with some of the sounds of 80s hair metal. It’s apparent that this is a bridge record to the emergence of flannels, thermals, long greasy hair and jeans.

Listening to the Deluxe Edition. I’ve always wanted to listen to more Mudhoney. This band are known to me for 2 reasons ONE They influenced Nirvana & TWO and This is most important thing they Appeared in the Chris Farley/David Spade movie “Black Sheep” Even though I’m listening to Deluxe version. I will judge this mainly on its Original release and comment on other tracks later Song wise there isn’t much to say. It’s really good garage rock, grunge, alt rock. Whatever you want to call it. I like the sound but nothing is jumping at me song wise 3/5

I have never listened to Mudhoney I don't think, it's not great but it's ok. The opening for 'Need' reminds me a lot of the opening to Nirvana's "Rape me". Other than that I'd describe the album as "pretty generic grunge" Standouts Need 3/5

I really liked the beginning. was too long and I got sick of it

Still finding their way, but Mudhoney have the heart and volume to leave an impression. That cover of Bette Midler’s “The Rose” is absolutely wild.

Alright

Ебать, просто стена звука пронеслась и пробила мое ебало

It's hard for me to rate something as short as this, I feel like I just didn't get the chance to really see what this band was capable of. This reminds me a lot of Nirvana's debut album (which is sadly absent from this list), both being of the late 80s proto grunge era before it really got started in the early 90s. It's a solid listen, I just really wish that it were longer.

First time hearing this, very interesting, if mainly for the fact that Nirvana's Bleach now seems like a complete rip-off of this (albeit quite a bit better), even including the album cover. Interesting to hear the formations of grunge, plenty of Stooges in here alongside a lot of other 70s/80s alt rock. Could see me getting into this if I were a bit younger.

Oh wow, real live Seattle grunge. Cool. Not something I'd listen to again, but I'm happy to add another album into my knowledge and familiarization of grunge. Punchy, energetic, and unrefined. An interesting sound.

Mudhoney has always been one of those bands that I feel like I should enjoy more than I generally do. This album is a good example of that phenomenon. I think, though, that the more I listen to this band, the more I can hear their influence on other bands. Frankly, I think I would be way more into this band if they had a better lead singer 3/5

One of those albums that’s difficult to judge as it seems to have multiple different track listings. Should it even be classed as an album at all? And if not, should it be disqualified from this list...?? Well, whatever, I liked it. It’s at the opposite end (the more grungy end, I’d say) of the Seattle grunge scene spectrum from, say, Pearl Jam, but the influence on Nirvana is clear to hear. 3.5

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I'd never heard of it, had no expectations walking in, and found it a pretty good listen. It's got this nice hard rock feel that borders on grunge before grunge was a thing that just kind of works.

I think I had heard of Mudhoney before, but not familiar with anything here. Screamy noise rock that has some moments. A bit too sleazy for my taste nowadays. The closest in sound/style I can think of is Jane's Addiction, but there's probably a better comparison I'll find out when I read others' comments. Listened to the original 6 songs on the EP plus 3 more from the deluxe edition. Best track: Touch Me I'm Sick

It was alright I only half paid attention to it honestly I might revisit a couple songs but grunge isn't really my genre

Solid proto grunge

I really, really disagree with Admin's policy of deliberately linking to deluxe/extended/remaster versions when available. Because this one's fun enough at 20 minutes, and would have been intolerable at the 2 hours that the spotify version had in store for me

don't know grunge at all but that was fun

Good not great

it's grunge, it's before the likes of nirvana & soundgarden and from what I have read about them, they laid the foundation for the Seattle punk rock scene which says a lot! This album is a bit too long and lacks in areas but the deep cuts are wild and loud which I enjoyed. It's not great imo but it's an important listen

The guitar work on this EP is fantastic! If there was one thing that kept me excited about the next song, then the next song, and so on and so forth, it was the instrumentation, as it is pure, raw energy, but still has enough melodically to be praised as something that walks the line between alternative rock and punk. I think the EP is just held back a bit by Steve Turner's vocals, as they can be rough, and not in a hardcore, "fuck the man!" sort of way, but rather in a chain-smoked two packs before rehearsal way. It can be adjusted to, but it is absolutely rough, and the release's short runtime don't give a lot of wiggle room. However, this is still a rocking release, and if you enjoy your noise rock and grunge overlords, make sure to pay due respect here.

I would like to give this 3.5 stars. Great sound and energy, but I have to be in the mood to listen.

3.0/5 listened 1x to deluxe edition (2h15m)

High ratings for the origins of grunge, and from a historical perspective, this is an important album that lots of other Seattle bands grew from/drew on. But I'm not sure that it's something that everyone needs to hear before they die. The six songs from the original EP are quite good - the others are fine.

“The Rose” was a highlight. I consistently liked this album and it’s grit and energy.

90s rock before the 90s... for 22 brief minutes. enjoyable

You can definitely hear how Nirvana gets influenced by these guys

I enjoyed this album more knowing it was released on SubPop. Didn't listen to the full Deluxe edition (stopped short realizing I had already heard some tracks). Solid grunge fare. Requires a glum mood.

first listen it's fuzzy all right, and its fun. but the recording quality is toughhhhh

Pretty good songs but way too long - Also one song they say they're from Seattle so that was poggers

I get the influence, but clearly the students have surpassed the teachers on this one. Can we give half stars?

Mediocre grunge. These guys are actually partly responsible for starting the genre. Favourite songs: In 'N' Out of Grace, You Got It (Keep It Outta My Face), Touch Me I'm Sick, Need, No One Has Least favourite songs: Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More, Halloween, Mudride 3/5

I get why this one is on the list, but honestly Mudhoney have never done much for me. I'd say they would have been great to see live at the time, but I don't feel like that energy translated too well to their records. However, they definitely deserve credit for paving the way for grunge in Seattle, even if they weren't technically the first. There are some good songs on here, but most are pretty forgettable.

Nawet ok

Generic grunge to me, but not the boring kind. 3.5 rounded down. Stand-out: If I think

It's alright, nothing amazing

Decent album and a nice introduction to a band I didn't know yet. The music makes me think about at least a dozen other bands. It doesn't give off an 80's vibe, which is kinda special. It just doesn't click for me enough though.

On the one hand, this totally brought me back to my college band days, and so much fun to play. On the other hand, I never liked to listen to the music I used to play. Great to play, cathartic, and awesome to join live on stage or in the pit, but never as much fun recorded. Belongs on the 1001 shows to see before you die, but not the 1001 albums to listen to.

This is duuuurty. The fuzz is real. Big muffs all over the place. In reality I really do love the sounds coming out of this one. That fuzzy bass is one of my favorites. The singing could definitely be better and I'm extremely confused by the track list. Original was only 22 minutes? Idk I listened to enough to declare a 3.

I was excited to listen to this one because Mudhoney is one of those names I heard mentioned a lot as part of the grunge movement, but it's a band I don't really know (unlike Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc). This album was super long: 32 tracks and more than 2 hours. Apparently it includes both the original album and a bunch of extras. The band has the same hard-rock energy that comes up for the other grunge bands, but none of the songs really hooked me.

As a Seattle-area kid who went to High School in the 90s, I like the *idea* of Mudhoney (a scrapy indie Grunge band who never quiet went big, but have been a local institution for 20+ years) more than I actually like their music.

Listening to this side by side with contemporaries of that time, the more punk, gritty sound is obvious - and you maybe get why Kurt was so embarrassed of how post-Bleach Nirvana sounded so polished. But Mudhoney suffers from 1) not having a great lead vocalist, and 2) a lack of hooks that meant they never broke through the way other Seattle bands did. Would love to rate this higher for nostalgia alone, but the music doesn't justify it.

I only listened to the original 6-track version. Worth it for the drumming on In ‘N’Out Of Grace, & the crazy wah-wah on that track but especially on Mudride. A good listen.

3.5 - Grunge's ground zero -- I enjoyed hearing the foundations for a brief musical flashpoint that dominated my early teen years. While I didn't connect with any one particular song on here, I admire the guitar and vocal sounds that bands like Nirvana would cop and refine on blockbuster records released a mere four years after this record dropped.

Pretty good while listening, but ultimately largely unforgettable shortly after and no part of it do I want to go back and hear again

Good to know about these people but too much for me

Zoals verwacht fuzzy. Rauw

This was different and cool, kind of punk bridging to thrash bridging to grunge. Solid drums throughout, especially on “In N Out of Grace”. 3.25/5
