Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Not a huge metal fan but this wasn’t too shabby

Ok listen

Typical of its genre. Great angsty lyrics

Sounds like my third grade best friends older stoner brothers room. Never been an Iron Maiden fan but didn’t hate this one. It’s actually a decent album.

Passabler Heavy Metal.

Not really my thing but I didn't hate it. I liked parts of it but I won't come back to this. Funny cover.

Decent classic metal.

Whenever I listen to run for the hills I’m somewhat bothered by the discrepancy between singing and drums, because they are not at the same time. Listening to the whole album I realised that the drummer is really bad. They don’t keep the same time as the rest of the instruments.

3, mostly for Number of the Beast and Run to the Hills. Maybe if had memories of the time when this music represented the darkest of evils, I'd have more appreciation.

a pretty good album, but vastly overrated on the strength of two songs. i've never been a huge maiden fan, they are fischer price baby's first metal to me. some of the best song writers ever in the genre, i just don't like their sound.

another metal band i expected to be less approachable based on it's cultural reputation. this feels like the musical equivalent of the satanic panic over d&d. maybe it would hit harder if i was a devout christian?? idk, i enjoyed it, 3.5

yeah sure. dad rock that mom says not to wear the t-shirt for out in public.

Iron Maiden sounds, those riffs, solos and Bruce’s vocals all at their peak here. Appreciated the story in each song for the first time too.

I actually saw Bruce Dickinson when he was the frontman of a long-forgotten band by the name of Samson (who were supporting Robin Trower, FFS!) and, to be honest, I / we thought he was a bit of a twat. But still, here he is doing his best Ronnie Dio impression and helping take Maiden from the vanguard of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal to new heights of success and fan loyalty. And the album? Well, the double-whammy of "The Number of the Beast" and "Run to the Hills" is huge fun but there is no escaping the silly lyrics and general campness of the whole enterprise. Ferocious riffing? Sure. Pounding rhythm section? Check. Radical departure into new musical territory? Not so much.

I am not a heavy metal fan. I see the logical progression from Led Zep. Soaring guitar, pounding drums, operatic vocals, replace Gandolf with horror, jettison the soft parts and the blues. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, fast, hard and complex. 3*

As much old school metal as I listen to, Iron Maiden has just never done it for me. Dickinson has a great voice. It's just a little too theatrical for my liking. It feels less like evil metal and more like Broadway. Album is full of bangers and overall a great listen.

I never really liked metal or hard rock so I’m biased in this but it just sounds like shit when the guitar and drums over take the singers voice and it’s all you can hear. None the less i can’t say it was bad, it was actually really good, singer is amazing makes me wonder why I don’t listen to Iron Maiden more often. Favorite song: The Prisoner Least favorite: the number of the beast 3.2/5

I liked this! Some good tracks and I can see myself checking out more albums by them in the future!

Kunetz said it all

better than I thought it would be. some good guitar.

I was expecting something completly different than what I got. This was much more hard rock than metal which was a nice surprise. I was a little hesitant based on the album name but I didnt really notice anything offensive. (I was listening to it pretty quietly. Pretty enjoyable. 3.5 stars

Warum haben Metal-Alben oft so infantile Cover? Weil die Musik genauso... oder die Hörer? (Musik)-Geschmack mit 16 stehengeblieben? Wäre mal ein Thema für eine Dissertation. Egal, Hallowed Be Thy Name ist stark.

Liked this more than I would have thought. Not as heavy as later music maybe? Favorite song: number of the beast, Least favorite: Invaders

I did not have much expectations from this album, as I have never been a metal fan. But it was pretty good.

First time listening to Iron Maiden. Don’t ask me what took so long. This is hit or miss for me. Great guitar work but don’t love the slash metal. “Children of the Damned” was my favorite

It my thing

Not my favorite genre of music but I actually liked it more than I thought I would. Chock full of riffs and sick solos which are pretty fun. I'm a fan when bands have 3 guitarists so that they have one rhythm guitarist and two guitars that can harmonize on the solos.

Way better than I expected. Didn’t realize Jack Black had a career before movies.

Classic rock!!!

I certainly dismissed these guys out of hand as a young adult. They weren’t my jam. Listening 40 years on, I have to give them their due. The playing is really good even if the songs don’t really transcend the genre. Certainly speed metal and Metallica probably don’t end up sounding like they do without these guys.

Album Nr. 46 Rockig.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. This genre is not my cup of tea and feels dated if you didn't grow up with it but it's pretty badass. The guitar work, drums, vocals, and storytelling all stand out and the energy doesn't let up. The title track is a banger.

This was Al Gore’s wives favorite album!!

For a metal album, it's actually solid

Iron Maiden is the only band that can pull off having 3 lead guitarists and a giant animatronic skeleton. Number of the beast & run to the hills are both incredible. Come see maiden at ball arena this October with me & Paul 🤘 Anyways, I’m just here so I won’t get fined.

Dramatic with screeching guitars and vocals. High energy and very fun, I might have underrated Iron Maiden without really giving them a chance 6.2/10 I liked it

Surprised again. I knew the number of the beast but liked Hallowed be thy name more. Enjoyed that it wasn’t heavy metal.

Clásicos

Still not a fan of Iron Maiden

It was pretty fun

It’s classic metal, you pretty much know what you’re in for

I enjoyed bits of this more than I expected.

Yesterday I got Megadeth, who are better at every aspect of heavy metal. The singing on this record is very flat a lot of the time. The songs are OK. They stood the test of time. They're a spectacular live band. Favorite song: Hallowed be thy name

This albums project is a trip because you’ll be listening to a record you enjoyed in your youth and then BAM the most misogynistic lyrics you’ve ever heard in your life. Steve Harris is a GOAT bassist, most of this album is really fun musically and the lyrics are about half good.

Meh, metal

better than I thought it would be. some good guitar playing

Run to the hills is pretty good

Classic British Heavy Metal, great, but in small doses.

Well, in the history of the time when I explored and delved into the world of heavy metal, this is a band that did not entice me to listen to them. I went more for obscure and more death metallic sounding bands. Hearing this now I hear a lot of anthem rock band sounds filled up with lyrics attempting to sound wicked. I can see how this could be entertaining to young rebels. Not particularly enjoying it ...

Not a metal fan

Hat Riffs, Melodien, Harmonien. Fein gemacht. Für mich etwas zu unruhig. Aber drei Sterne sollen es schon sein.

I can't help but love Maiden. The music is just fun to listen to and everyone in the band is so talented. But in the spirit of fairness, I do have to admit how repetitive the sound can be. I've never listened to this album end-to-end but the majority of the songs do just sound identical if you're not paying close attention to it. I'd never listened to "Children of the Damned" which I really liked because it was a ballad and different than most of the other songs. The title track is the best of the bunch for me, though. Overall, fun listen, but not one I'll listen to end-to-end again.

This was a fun album. I kinda hated the last Iron Maiden album, but this one was alright. Much less excessively long songs. A lot more melodic, and of course some killer guitar solos. When I did pay attention to the lyrics I found they were okay, but still not bad. 3.5

Not terrible, but not great. A few of the songs were hype.

Last 4 songs were good - first 4 were kinda forgettable. I would listen again but Iron Maiden definitely not my go-to band.

not an electronic fan but did find this entertaining and somewhat captivating

I thought it was good. Not amazing, just good. Metal has never really been my thing, and this didn’t change that.

Solid metal. Not my thing, but I respect their place. The music is outstanding for metal. The voice is ok.

Listen, I didn't dislike it. In fact I really enjoyed a lot of the riffs and solos on the guitars. Nothing really.... caught me though. Its like, if this band played live and my friend wanted to go, I'd go. It'd probably be stellar live. But I won't go out of my way to listen to this album again.

I listened to this album a lot growing up. My best friend even had a poster in his room (it was retro at the time; this was the early aughts). While I realize that metal as a genre had been forming for close to a decade at this point, I consider Iron Maiden to be the first true metal band. This record is full of genre-defining techniques you'll still find today. Nowadays it kinda all sounds the same and doesn't grab me the way it used to, but it's still a landmark of a record. Also the riff from Hallowed Be Thy Name is an all-time favorite of mine

Solid instrumentals, especially guitar riffs, and vocals throughout. Wish I could get more into 80’s rock.

Some cool guitar but kind of exhausting to listen through. Vocals were a bit much for me

Nice to listen to the classics again during a traffic jam in my mini. I had a training day in the BMW group revealing the new Countryman and Three doors. I liked The Prisoner and The Number of the Beast.

Day3 - loud and fast. i’ve never been a huge metal guy but if you’re gong to listen to this kind of music it should be good and this is good ps. Iron Maiden should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Liked more than I thought

Not my cup of tea

An album of endless guitar solos. Many songs felt the same / very formulaic. Didn't hate it tho.

Good rock music. A couple of the songs were stand out, most of them seemed to blend together.

Ihan jees, vaikkei tyyliäni olekaan. Run to the Hills tuo mukavasti muistoja lapsuudesta.

Juvenile but emotive and considerate. More of the lyrical maturity could've been translated into the instrumental choices however

Gangland is an awful song. Luckily Hallowed By Thy Name is on this project and evens it out.

The main hits are great and the riffs on every track are amazing but I'm not a fan of the singer. 4 songs added to playlist, no favorites.

I think if I'm rating this based on what I currently think of this album it's a 2. I enjoyed this album years ago, the second half is much stronger than the first, at one point maybe I would have scored it as high as a 4. Today though I struggle to get through it. I'll give this an average score between the two extremes. 3.

I liked the backing music. It was somewhere between Van Halen and Metallica. I didn't like the vocals too much, it felt too operatic, too much vibrato. My friend Dhanu, who is a huge Iron Maiden fan, says that this is a good intro album to the band.

I'm just not a fan of his vocals

More enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Fun album art cover and the instrumentals sound great for the most part but I can't stand the vocals. This album feels like it had some "edge" for the time but now it's just corny and lame. Overall a fine album that clearly influenced generations to come but aged a bit more poorly than some would probably care to admit.

This album gets me FIRED UP. Love the combination of some great and energetic guitar riffs with Bruce Dickinsons crystal clean voice. Favorite songs being children of the damned, hallowed be thy name, and obviously run to the hills. This would probably piss a lot of people off, but my biggest knock on the album is that to me, a lot of the songs sound the same. I felt that a lot of the songs almost had such a loose structure that it made it difficult to pickup on any consistent melodies. I think that’s why I like run to the hills so much, because there’s a a clear chorus, easy to pickup melody and it’s catchy as hell. I felt like that couldn’t be said for a lot of the other songs. I had to temper my rating just because I needed to keep in mind to rate the entire album, not just inflate the score because run to the hills is an absolute banger. I enjoy this genre of music a lot, wish I could give it a 3.5/4.

Solid album that got better as it went on. Quintessential 80's hair metal to the core, this is not an album I would seek out on my own. I wouldn't be upset if someone played this music but I would go for Rush if I was to listen to this Era of music. Run to the Hills was probably my favorite song

High energy and fun listen. Was already familiar with some of the bigger tracks. Would listen again.

meh 3*

Am a Rock/Metal fan, this one somehow didn't do it for me

It was ok

Not my thing but still kinda fun

Classic metal and it sounds so much prettier than the metal today. Interesting album.

i now understand road rage. i can imagine listening to this and getting mad at stupid pedestrians for walking so slowly. hurry up! me and my death trap machine need to power down the road at 100kmp/h while listening to iron maiden! a lot of focus on religion and christianity (and its antithesis hehe (satanism(666(the number of the beast's lyrics are so funny)))) in the lyrics generally speaking which is really fun. i actually couldn't tell the difference between a lot of these which is maybe quite bad but it did all sound quite similar sorrryyyy!! however there were two standouts, children of the damned was insanely good and i very much support the guitar solos in that song specifically. which isn't to say that others in the album are bad but that track in particular was fantastic. also the melodic/harmony motif in run to the hills was fun but as i type this i can't remember it that well, which potentially says something either about the quality of the hook or my propensity to forget things very fast. both valid.

This is more like it.

I actually really enjoyed this album as a full piece. I have listened to a little bit of Iron Maiden over my years, but once again I didn't really get into the hair metal kind of genre too much.. I liked bands like Def Leppard, Journey, AC/DC, Guns n Roses etc and obviously I'd heard songs like 'The Number Of The Beast' and 'Run To The Hills' before but I'd never really gave Iron Maiden a real chance and after this album.. yeah I'm a fan. Its not my favorite stuff ever, but its definitely got a place in my rotation. My favorite tracks on this thing were 'The Prisoner' and 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'.. Overall: 3.3/5

Accomplished, and Maiden are one of the best at what they do. But this isn't their best for me

Maidens epic cartoonish heavy metal can be fun in small doses. They sure made a lot of kids metal heads in the eighties (and nineties). It’s metal palatable for pop listeners. An entry point to the world of fast electric guitars and head banging.

Not my usual genre but I enjoyed it. High octane and some good riffs. Hallowed be thy Name is the best track.

Too much hair rock for me, but has some real shredders. Sounds classic

It was...fine? Very 80s hair metal, which isn't my thing. It is fun, however, to listen to these old metal/rock albums and really get to hear the influence they have on later music.

I feel like a traitor to my culture not knowing a damn thing about metal, but I have to say this album was surprisingly enjoyable. Love Jack Black’s vocals, album rips from beginning to end.

7/10 The themes of this album are like if a 13 year old norwegian teen only listened to the fantasy/nordic songs of Led Zepplin and cranked those up to 10. So, yes, a cartoon. A pulpy, garish cartoon of raiders and raided, vanquishers and vanquished. But so sincere in its love of such things, that this becomes something of a campy masterpiece. The musicianship is very good and has wonderful arpeggiated solo bits that stand on their own. This album ROCKS, but isn't terribly deep.

Good, surprised that I’d enjoy it as much as I did but still not terribly memorable

strong 3 for me despite some of that dad rock schmaltzyness that isn't really for me. the final track is a triumph, i really loved the prisoner as well. held my attention surprisingly well.

can i say something without anyone getting mad

not the usual style of metal i go for (i like more industrial stuff) also despite liking some metal bands ive never listened to iron maiden. this man has a crazy vibrato and a crazy falsetto rlly liked the vocals on run to the hills. group vocal is always cool. the heavy vibrato gives his performance on this song gives it almost an opera like feel. very fun 👍 gonna be honest did not have time to finish the album i had like 2 songs left. 3/5 faves: 22 acacia avenue, run to the hills,

more entertaining than i expected... the vocals are definitely a highlight

Heavy!

Invaders - 5/10 Children of the Dammed - 4/10 The Prisoner - 5/10 22 Acadia Avenue - 3/10 The Number of the Beast - 7/10 Run to the Hills - 4/10 Gangland - 4/10 Hallowed Be Thy Name - 5/10 Raw Score - 4.625/10 Adjusted Score- 5/10

Listened Before? No Throughout my life I have not had much love for Maiden. Mainly because I didn't care much for Dickinson's voice. That said, I think I have shed some of my early distaste and can respect what this band brought to metal. Trying to review completely unbiased. Love the album cover. Honestly as far as metal imagery goes it doesn't get much better. Album opens on a god damned tear with Invaders. Interesting this one has elements to it that actually remind me of Zappa's St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast. Instrumental work on display is fucking nuts from all involved. The fury of Invaders gives way to a power-ballad that is Children of the Damned. Fine song, but really not what I go in for with Maiden; this puts the group's weakest point (Dickinson's voice) in main focus. The Prisoner opens with a sample and is lead by a tight guitar riff. Otherwise, I kind of lost focus. I enjoyed the virtuoso section within 22 Acacia Avenue; almost felt like this could be a jam band; pretty cool song. Number of the Beast and Run to the Hills are two of the biggest songs from this metal juggernaut. The progression within Number of the Beast kind of reminds me of "When the Saints Go Marching Down" and I can't unhear it. Not my favorite of their songs... Run to the Hills on the other hand is straight jet fuel. Just sounds like a workout on the drums. Back to a workout on Gangland; no rest for the weary. All in, I can certainly see the appeal for this album as an entry into the metal cannon. The instrumentals rip; there is a lot of range to the track listing; awesome imagery and Satanic references; and as far as hair metal goes, Dickinson has the quintessential voice. That said, I didn't feel particularly elevated by this one. I'm a 3.5 / 5 and am going to round down. Added to Library? Yes Songs Added To Playlists: - Run to the Hills

Never have gotten into Iron Maiden besides whatever songs were probably on guitar hero. Songs start to blend into each other for me kinda all sounding the same. Don’t really dig the voice but instrumentals are cool. The number of the beast and run to the hills fuckin rip. Pretty sure number of the beast was in a Tony Hawk game. Those two songs were the only ones I knew going in and I liked them the most. Gonna go with a solid 3 here but ultimately feeling like a 3.5

I find Iron Maiden to be more enjoyable than most of the bands of their era/genre, although I wouldn’t say overall I’m that big of a fan. This album caused a lot of controversy cause of the whole Satan thing, and it does have a nice edge to it. Prisoner and Number of the Beast are highlights.

Hot take: This album is pure, molten metal, to be sure, but it is theatrical! As in Broadway! Bruce Dickinson sounds like he could be singing Andrew Lloyd Weber. It's technical, it's precise, it has no groove or pocket of any kind -- Broadway! This is not a criticism, it's an epiphany.

Not at all the kind of music I normally go towards, but it was honestly a really enjoyable listen. I love the instrumentation and the energy that carries throughout the entire record is a lot of fun. Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills, and the closing track are standouts. Only gave it one listen. Might try to revisit again.

pretty good metal album. Seemed a bit samey at times.

The shredding and vocals are very “of its time.” I loved looking at it through the lens of where the sound started and where it’s made it’s mark today. Not my genre but it’s classic

Not a huge metal fan but I can see the appeal. Something about the sound is defiantly British but the clarity of of the guitar work and precise bass were worth a listen.

Me gustó más el otro.

Album 188 of 1001 Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast Rating : 3.5 / 5 Favorite Track : Run to the Hills Never was really my go to genre, so I'm a bit picky on these. This doesn't compare to their 1st album, in my opinion. There is much better out there than this. Still, if you're an Iron Maiden fan, it will be loved.

Not a huge Metal fan but I liked lots of the riffs in some of the songs!

Solid album. All of the songs kinda blend together aside from Run to the Hills. Run to the Hills kicks so much ass. Title track was in Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4.

Great album

Better than I was expecting, guitars were cool, vocals were meh

Enjoyed listening. Nothing too exciting.

This was fine! A bunch of dudes rocking out and yelling about how badass it is to be from hell where the devil roams. Decently fun, very silly.

decent, always liked them musically but personally can't take a whole album of that vocal

Reminiscent of Aerosmith. The song 22 Acacia Avenue had terrible lyrics. Otherwise a very enjoyable album.

This might be controversial, but this kind of just makes me wanna listen to DragonForce.

Not my style...

My level of Iron Maiden is greatest hits level. It’s all the same for me..

i've listened to this album before and liked it more than i thought i would. only downloaded a few songs

Classic Iron Maiden and their first album with Bruce Dickinson. All the hallmarks you'd expect from 80s Iron Maiden. I didn't detect any occult themes. Instead there seemed to be a few recurring references to invasion and colonisation, which is one of the plants evils and (unlike Satan) is real. Perhaps that's why the record was on the brunt of a conservative backlash? Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Run to the Hills Date listened: 09/09/23

I've never really cared much for Iron Maiden. This album was alright, but nothing special to me.

Solid Metal album.

AJ: Iron Maiden is a good time. Run to the Hills might be my favorite.

- Never heard an Iron Maiden album before - Not usually my thing but still enjoyed it in places - Fav songs: Run to the Hills, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Children of the Damned

I remember this album well when it came out, my eldest brother used to play it full blast and thrash about in a violent sweat like he was the most awesome heavy metaller ever bouncing to (at that time) awesome risque lyrics... me.... I thought... meh.... As for the album, it's not that I hate it, i just think it's over rated for what it is. If it was on I'd listen to it, probably still be able to sing it word for word I'd heard it that many times as a kid... but feck me no, I'd never.choose to listen to it.

The title of this review is somewhat of a double entendre. Because on one hand, yeah obviously metal music is hard, that is the whole point of the genre. But on the other hand, metal is a complicated genre for me personally. I have a lot of love for lots of metal music. But I'm also not a huge fan of some of it. Particularly the more melodic stuff in the 80's. Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast falls somewhat in the middle of the spectrum. For me, there are three things I look for that help a metal album stand out more. The riffs need to be heavy, which seems redundant to say considering I am talking about metal music here. The vocals need to be strong and powerful. And probably the most important one, the mix needs to make everything hit really hard. This is metal music. I want it to blow my eardrums out. Too often do I find that certain metal music just sounds flat and doesn't have any real impact to it. It could just be my ears, but I don't think it is. I think this album pretty much meets all of those criteria, but maybe not as well as it could. It isn't exceeding any expectations I had, or blowing my mind in any way. I think Bruce is a very strong vocalist. I can see why people like him. His type of operatic singing isn't really my thing, but it sounds cool. I think the riffs and guitar work on this also sound decent. The drumming is okay, but doesn't hit very hard. Like something about the intro on Gangland sounds off to me. I just don't think this kind of metal music has ever clicked in my brain. It doesn't make me want to get up and move around or head bang or really anything. It just falls somewhat flat for me.

As a huge metal head I’m not much of a Maiden fan

Liked it more than I expected

i prefer metallica. fav songs: children of the damned, hallowed be thy name.

I liked the upbeat vibe, I kinda needed it today. Not a bad album.

pretty good

Clearly a classic - even though hard to take seriously after Spinal Tap. I used to love Run to the Hills when I was a kid

I’ve never listened to an Iron Maiden album before yet there were no surprises with this. Every song had the fast galloping guitars, wailing vocals and solos. It was interesting to hear how much this clearly influenced Metallica. Number of the Beast and Run to the Hills are good fun but the album wasn’t for me.

It was good, but also not my favorite kind of metal

Favourites: • Run to the Hills • Hallowed Be Thy Name

its like 3,7 out of 5 im sure iron maiden has better albums but this one had its moments

Not really my cup of tea but I did enjoy it more than I thought I would

Heavy, but far from unbearably so

One good song lots of shredding. Cheesy

First full Maiden album. Enjoyed more than I thought I enjoyed the band in general. Maybe I was just sick of the hits.

Yep. Good. This is what I thought it would be.

As I sit here starting the final track of Iron Maiden's third album, I'm wondering I can't help but feel like my own expectations led me astray as to what to expect from this album. Obviously tracks like "The Number of the Beast" and "Run to the Hills" are both fantastic tracks, as is the track that goes on as I type this "Hallowed Be Thy Name", but these are all on the back half of the album, making it, to me, very lop sided. That's not to say the other tracks at the front of this album are bad, there are things in each of the songs that I like as they came up, but I can't help but feel like this album delivers less than what it perceives to give. Make no mistake, Iron Maiden still blow you away at times on this album, but not as often as you might like or want. Personal highlights are pretty much the second half of this album, with particular props to "Hallowed Be Thy Name."

pov youre in the back seat of your dad’s infiniti while he’s getting divorced in 2008

Best song: Run to the Hills The rest...just sounds the same! Fortunately it's not too long.

I know this stuff’s controversial cause they talk about the debil but this sounds like phantom of the opera to me

Standouts: Run to the Hills, The Number of the Beast Others: Children of the Damned, Hallowed Be Thy Name Great sound! 3.5

I'm sure this was revolutionary at the time. Number of the Beast has an awesome guitar solo.

"I'm afraid you're just too darn loud." - Huey Lewis (Back to the Future) As a 15 year old in 1982, I would have really been into this. But, now I'm a 55 year old and this doesn't appeal to me the same as it would have back then. I do know Run to the Hills and The Number of the Beast. It is really a great early heavy metal sound and Iron Maiden is really unique. It was always just a little harder than I was really ever into. I can appreciate it for what it is and know that this album is really important to some people. Songs like, Children of the Damned, seem to be more my speed to rock. I enjoyed that one much more that some of the others. This is my first time hearing the album as a whole, it won't be the last, but I really need to be in the right mood to get into it. 3/5

Iron Maiden really comes across like a bunch of dudes who just really wanna shred and don't care much what the vocalist is doing. And, for that, it's a lot of fun. But this album would be so much better with different vocals or maybe even none at all. It's not that Bruce is a bad singer. He's alright. It's that the lyrics are so dumb. When it's not super cheesy or tryhard, it's horrendously cringe. But, if you can ignore the entire vocal element, the music is amazing. Just face-melting shred after face-melting shred. Really great. Too bad about those stupid lyrics, though.

Banger, just rips all the way through

Maybe heavy metal just isn't for me, because this also sounds pretty generic. It's all rah rah rah guitar solos, which needless to say requires skill & talent, but isn't particularly enjoyable to me. I'd rather have a catchy guitar riff complemented by a nice melody. That said, I did enjoy Children of the Damned and Run to the Hills.

I enjoy metal, but I like it the best when you can bob your head with a scowl on your face. A lot of this album is not that. I’ve always considered Iron Maiden “happy metal” The opening track is a bit jarring with a bizarre cringy key change at the chorus. Children of the Damned and Hallowed Be Thy Name are the standouts here. Can’t deny the vocals are excellent throughout the album. Run to the Hills is the worst song on the album. I thought Spotify had mistakenly switched to Van Halen’s Hot For Teacher when Gangland started. Exact same drum part. But this song came before VH and is better, so screw VH. But discovered some pretty cool songs as well that make this a decent listen.

Ehhhh. Not my thing. Can't fault the musical ability of anyone but it's just not something I enjoy listening to. Had hopes at the start of track 2 that there may be more levels but there kinda wasn't. Ah well.

Enjoyably rockin

Songs are fun metal romps, guitar passages end up sounding very same y and similar sounding towards the end of the album. Probably wouldn’t need to listen to the whole album again to get enjoyment, just one or two songs Also 22 acacia avenue got some sus lyrics. Number of the beast kinda goated tho

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: 22 acacia avenue

I’ve always enjoyed the devil imagery associated with heavy metal - it appears that this is where it was written in blood. Run to the Hills is an obvious stand-out, but it’s interesting in that it has nothing to do with devils in its sympathy for the plight of Native Americans. And there’s the song about the whorehouse, too. A real scattered mix of themes. A foundational heavy metal mish-mosh, pun intended.

I knew a few songs going into this and wasn't totally up for it but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. This style of metal gets a bit too cheesy for me at times and the guitar shredding is technically impressive but at times loses it's sense of melody.

Run To The Hill - прям даже немного подпевать меня тянуло. Deep Purple.

666 minus 663 stars

The Number Of The Beast, Run to the Hills and Hallowed Be Thy Name were all great. The rest weren't quite as good but still enjoyable.

Nice riffs, generally find Bruce's cod operatic notes unpleasant. Doubt I'll be returning to this any time soon.

Decent album, overrated as far as metal goes.

Guitars, energy, darkness, exhausting. Fun.

Some bangers but overall not as engaging as when I was I first heard thus around age 19 or 20. Always thought the last track was too long and it feels even longer than I remember

Very Rainbow like. Nice hard rock!

I sure do remember some of their wild album covers which I've never revisited-- though this was the first time I've seen or heard this one. Still such a totally wild and gnarly band doing the things that they do, accented with the spoken word. Found it to be innovative, fairly cool, and a lot less intimidating as I did as a small child listening to Iron Maiden in my older brother's room.

Better than turd soup.

Is Jack Black consciously trying to sound like Iron Maiden? Should they be flattered or offended?

Tenacious D might have done this better. Also I’m easily suggestible, so I stopped this halfway through to listen to Teenage Dirtbag on repeat for a bit and I did not regret it. That is a damn delightful song.

oooOOOOoooooOOOOOoooooOOOOooooo AHHHhHHhhhHhHHHhHhHHHhHhHhHHHH Whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh This album sounds like the soundtrack to a great rollercoaster. It hits hard and fast. It would have to be one of those electromagnetically launched from the start house rides. I went down the rabbit hole of Iron Maiden theme park fantasies, and MrKnickerbocker proposed (https://forum.maidenfans.com/threads/iron-maiden-theme-park.27627/): “Aces High - A roller coaster with two opposing cars, painted for Britain and Germany. The tracks weave around each other like an airfight and each rider gets a water gun they can fire at their opponent. The best seat is for the Tailgunner, who gets a double-barreled gun and rides backwards!” Sounds like a blast! I understand why the band considers Hallowed Be Thy Name to be their best song. It’s a good one. Too bad rollercoasters give me headaches. 🎢 🎢🎢

Classic British metal id say... I saw them tour this album back in 82. Its tight and well composed. Distinctive twin guitars and Bruce's vocals. It owes a big debt to Sabbath. Not really my thing but I admire its craft.

Spent the whole album waiting for Number of the Beast and specifically Run to the Hills, just hoping something, anything would stack up to those two absolute classics. Sadly nothing really did. Also one too many 6+ minute tracks that don't do enough to justify the length. I suppose the 2nd half of Acacia Avenue was decent. But I was really trying to like something by that stage so who knows. My feelings confirmed when the 2 aforementioned finally come on and absolutely blow everything else away. Well RTTH does, NOTB is merely great. Maybe its unfair, how can anything compare to Run to the Hills, one of if not the greatest metal song ever written? Fact is they are on the same album as it, and that's that. It towers above everything else though, what a song. Muscular closer Hallowed be Thy Name is an exception to all my comments above, but just reading this being referenced as one of the greatest metal albums ever, I can't have that. 3 fantastic songs, the rest isn't meh, but it's nowhere near good enough for that accolade.

Raw, powerful. One of the pioneers.

I'm not a big metal fan, but wow, "Invaders" kicks off this album in style. "The Prisoner" would not been out of place at hardcore show in the early 80s. "Number of the Beast," the title track, is pretty epic. The rest of the album wears on me a bit, mostly because of the receptive nature of the "first I'm growling, now I'm operatic" vocals. He is a very talented singer, but it starts to sound pretty repetitive by the end of side two.

A great metal LP that couples strong, narrative songwriting with fun, blazing licks. Does get a bit monotonous production and tone-wise towards the end in the context of a full-album listen, but the stand-alone tracks respectively rock hard enough to warrant relistening.

I may never be a fan of metal. I don't like the style of singing. And overall, it's just very loud. I don't hate it, but I find it pretty boring. I was hopeful because I heard The Trooper at some point in the past and I liked it. What I did especially enjoy was the solo on 22 Acacia Avenue and the catchy hook on Run to the Hills- however I don't like the verses in either songs. While it has redeeming values, an entire album worth of metal isn't designed for me. But I’m still open for more metal and hoping that it resonates more with me in the future! Highlights: Children of the Damned, Run to the Hills, Hallowed Be Thy Name

not bad

its a decent album but i think its a bit soft compared to my expectation of iron maiden. Some songs are on the hardrock level of Boston. Nonetheless a decent album i think a live perforance will do it more justice

secretly big nerds first vinyl record I bought now a sometimes food

Good fun, but, like a lot of 80s metal, it's a bit quaint now. "Run To The Hills" was the soundtrack to many drunken nights in rock bars in my early 20s.

Throughout the album I kept thinking to myself: "are there really living musicians just repeating the same guitar riff for couple minutes long?". Apart from that the music is not bad by any means, but lyrics are awkward and vocals average. I think the composition of the album is missing some powerful ballads.

Iron maiden helped me get in to metal but this album was more of a caricature than it was engaging. But that's a hard critique to back up. Generally i appreciate metal for not taking itself too seriously. And this album doesn't. Which i love.

Sunday recovery, amazing run in the rain, books but no IKEA, hang with Bryce and Kari decent but long

Not my type of music

Not bad. Technically solid work - just did not find it all that compelling.

Never been a huge fan but like the guitar parts

Ok, Iron Maiden, how do I rate this? I feel like I should like metal music, since I like rock. However, I just can’t ever get over the high pitched scream singing that gets held for a super long time. I tend to like my rock music heavier and lower in tone. Metal always all just seems so high pitched. In any case, it’s high energy and the drums are always fast and in your face, so that part rocks. I just wish the vocals were done differently.

most of all I liked not the hits

6/10 - painfully mid I feel like Iron Maiden has a lot of the same pompous, show-off charisma that Jethro Tull has but whereas Jethro Tull is an incredibly talented prog-rock band that actually has something to show with the way they act, Iron Maiden doesn’t they act all loud and engaging and yet have nothing to show for it I don’t know, maybe I’m being too judgy, I enjoyed their first album, but this one is a bit of an eye-roll for me

I appreciate it, just never been my bag

Less awful than I thought.

I really preferred Paul Di Anno, but also, I never got into the Iron Maiden thing, even if I like quite some metal bands. Not for me really, but still entertaining

I like my heavy metal to be operatic, to tell a good story or two, and have a healthy dose of hellfire. This fit the bill.

Now this is the Iron Maiden I know and love. Great sounding album though I don't think I would want to revisit a lot of these songs individually. Favorite Tracks: Run to the Hills, Number of the Beast

Yeaaaah👻

An important classic for sure but not really my thing. In 1982 it could have been a 5 for me.

Not a big heavy metal fan Not bad though

Not quite my style but there’s some enjoyable tracks.

I liked parts of this. Overall not bad.

I enjoyed. A lot more musical than I remember it being.

I liked it! Never listened to them so great intro

Thought this was an ok album. Better than the other Iron Maiden album I had. The lead singer is more of the yelling metal which sometimes it’s not too bad. The instrumentals are pretty decent as the past album was too. Find it interesting their most popular song, number of the beast, was the least metal song on their album. 5.7/10

Pretty good

First off, I had a lot of fun listening to this album- it’s very “80s classic rock” and I understand it’s appeal and hear it’s influences elsewhere. I mean any song on this could be a Spinal Tap song, and the instrumentation by Iron Maiden is- excellent, as Bill & Ted would put it. But overall, it’s just not that interesting at least to me, someone born 18 years after this album was released. In it’s day, this would probably be my shit- but listening to it now, it just seems really dated and musty- and I really enjoy some music that could be considered “mustier” than this. Good tunes to blast down the highway while cruising with your buds, but something that’s essential listening? Ehhh. Sorry Iron Maiden fans, I’d rather just listen to Styx or Van Halen- cause at least they have some more interesting arrangements.

I get it's a metal classic, but I think this style of metal is my least favorite. Too "clean" in the mixing and just sort of meh lyrics, it's cliche at this point. But, it's still good I just don't jive with it.

Not my kind of rock

The Number of the Beast is the second Iron Maiden album that I have reviewed for this list, and essentially doubles the amount of music that I've heard from the band. The only track from this album that was all familiar to me was "Run to the Hills", but I may have only heard a couple lines from the song and never the entire track. From the start, the album felt like it would be at best a "one and done" recommendation. Iron Maiden is too bombastic and operatic for me. That approach actually works for me with "Run to the Hills", but the rest of the album didn't capture my attention. I didn't dislike the tracks, but one listen feels like enough.

Well, sometimes you need to give in. Most chord successions are lame and hackneyed, so are those 5th harmony guitar solos, and the aggressive factor have since been neutered by tons of better metal or hardcore metal releases since the early eighties. But I guess that, well, this album needs to be included in a list of 1001 essential albums to listen to, even once in your life, if only for its "cultural" importance. Legions of metalheads have banged their skulls to this. "Run To The Hill" is an instant hit, so is the title track, "Children Of The Damned" is not so bad, and "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is an epic closer. Sure, the whole thing sounds quite ridiculous. But sometimes, life is. You can't blame Iron Maiden fans for this. This album certainly had something idiosyncratic and new to deliver to that audience at the time. Guess that, for once, you gotta respect that sort of off-kilter commercial success. I've read here that there's another Iron Maiden album on the list. I'll listen to it too when the time comes. But unless it's *way* different (and I already know it won't be, given who we're talking about here), I probably won't add it to my list. Overlong jokes are rarely good, right? You won't find me including more albums Number of records left to review or just listen to: 934 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 32 (including this one, begrudgingly, I guess) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 18 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important to me): 17

Clean hard rock sound, but I’m not connecting with it very much

Decent metal album. I think it's slightly better than the self titled that is also on this list. "Run to the Hills" is another great Rock Band track.

I’ve always thought of the NWOBHM as an authentic precursor for Drum and Bass, Jungle and (for its sins) Gabber - in short, an aesthetic and musical precursor to some of the more interesting (and some of the more appalling) aspects of rave culture of the 90s. Anyway, never listened to anything by IM other than their ‘Straight in at No.1!’ strategically timed single releases. This is actually entertaining, in a slightly overwrought way. (Fun fact - Bruce Dickinson flies planes (commercial jets? I think, but not entirely certain) these days.)

I really like Run to the Hills and Number of the Beast. The rest I can appreciate but overall Iron Maiden is not my thing.

Rating: 63% or C+ Overrated. This album has been touted as a heavy metal essential, I beg to differ. Besides few key standout tracks, this is a bland outing. Iron Maiden to me represents at best a purely singles band. Sad that a few killer classics are unfortunately undone in this album as a whole. Standout tracks: Hallowed be thy Name, Children of the Damned, 22 Acacia Avenue and the guitar solo of The Prisoner.

Classic metal album but I prefer other maiden albums over this one.

1st March 2022 Listened in the morning working from home. Chilled and watched mass in the evening. Classic heavy rock and roll!

Good metal album all the way through

Great Band of the '80, but like heavy metal at all.

I tried my best but couldn’t get into it. Always had an antipathy towards Dickinson. Something about they kind of vocal never really got me. Wonder what those songs would be like without him? Love the energy. Rhythm section is brilliant. The title track and Run For The Hills stand out.

I've never been a huge Iron Maiden fan. I've always liked their music, but haven't ever owned an album. They were just a hair before my time. No way in hell my parents would've let me listen to No. of the Beast. Powerslave and Piece of Mind were the albums my friends had. I def appreciate the synchronicity. Their ability to play that fast and in perfect time is pert near unmatched.

Solid early hell metal. Rock on.

Hallowed and Run to the hills best songs on this

I actually liked this better than I thought I would. It helps that there a bit of variety in tempo and mood or else it would be too much. 3.5/5 stars

Spured me on when I was cleaning, had a good time listening to this. Unlikely to think to listen to it again but it was good fun

Well I have to say perhaps this was the Monday hype we all needed! It was pretty fun in the end and didn't dislike it as much as the others. Run to the Hills is a classic, perhaps from the infamous AIr Guitar CD

It's a pretty run of the mill rock album. Some of the song topics are quite unique which is nice. 5/10

First Iron Maiden album I have ever listened to. I am 48. It wasn't terrible.

Two good tracks but then it starts to sound a bit the same.3*

Perhaps controversial but I was feeling awful after my booster and just wasn't in the mood.

I find this album both good and fun. At the same time I don't think I'm going to revisit it anytime soon. It just didn't really peak my interest as much as some other heavy metal albums.

not bad for metal

Pretty good. Seems like standard metal.

It was alright, some were pretty catchy. 1RS

Not one of my favourite genres, but this is one of the best that I've heard. "Run To The Hills" is a classic, of course.

Run to the Hills is a legit banger. The rest is decent enough.

Best tracks had to be: •Children of the dammed •The number of the beast •The Prisoner Defo best enjoyed while doing makeup session- results may vary

Very similar throughout bar one or two songs. If you wanna rock, this is where you would come, but minimal variation. Then again, it does exactly what you would think, very well.

Run To The Hills is an absolute tune

Hard rock is fun, if in small bits. This one seemed to all sound the same by the end of it

Solid 80s rock band. Reminds me slightly of Rush

Got this one twice. Review: Better than expected. The classic songs still hit hard.

Better than expected. The classic songs still hit hard.

I like it actually, and I didn't expect to. But man, did it hurt my ears! I wish I had loudspeakers to play it on instead of my headphones. It also offered a bit too stark a contrast to my unexciting surroundings at the time of listening, namely my study-from-home desk. As someone who is not very used to metal, it was a bit hard to keep the tracks apart to be honest, although I think that is the case with any unfamiliar genre. On the other hand, I hope fans of the band will forgive me for saying that the lead singer has a beautiful voice. The most popular track, Run to the Hills, I found a bit boring just. My favourite was probably 22 Acacia Avenue or the title track. I really didn't like Gangland. This made me feel a little bit bad for dismissing heavy metal for so long.

Decent but needs to be listened to loud. Not my taste, a bit bombastic

I don't get metal cool drums thou 4/10

I enjoyed it much more than I expected to. 7.7/10

Hits are always great, rest was meh

First time I ever listened to Iron Maiden. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Not bad, some nice drumming overall not my thing

Iron Maiden, a band I used to say I liked as a kid despite the fact that I had never heard them. They were just considered cool by everyone who was cool. Unfortunately they suffer from what I call "Rush syndrome". They are badass and supremely talented but I just can't stand the lead singers voice, even though its objectively good and powerful af. Power Metal vocals just sound annoying to my ears unless its female led (see Frozen Crown)

"The Saxons have been overpowered victims of the mighty Norsemen" (Invaders) "He's walking like a small child But watch his eyes burn you away Black holes in his golden stare God knows, he wants to go home" (Children of the damned) Menos divertido de lo que una esperaba, a veces la épica puede ser demasiada épica y me he tenido que poner la purpurina por el medio.

3.7 - All the good elements of 80s metal with almost none of the annoying ones. Terrific guitar work, interesting song themes (alien invasion, fighting against authoritarian govt of the future, etc).

"Invaders" y "22 Acacia Avenue" me gustaron. 7/10.

not typically my vibe, a little too screamy but i can understand why it’s good, got kind of tired of it after 2 songs

Good album, good memories. But too much of the same genre to listen in 1 sitting.

In the mood for something heavy and fast. Classic Metal/Rock Favorites: Number of the Beast Run to the Hills-“Heard this before” Hallowed be thy Name The Prisoner

Metal is still not for me apart from Mick Gordon, although Hallowed Be Thy Name in this album was interesting.

It was a decent album. Sounded very generic and similar to that style. Did not pick up on message too much other than satan.
