This is my second Pink Floyd album ever and my second from 1001 Albums Generator. The first was Dark Side of the Moon and I did a lengthy write up. I'll keep this brief. It was ok. Very overhyped. 3 out of 5.

Enjoyed, a lot

As much as I appreciate that the album is an ode to Syd Barrett after his exit from the band, the whole concept strikes me as ponderous self-indulgence. From the schoolboy lyrics lamenting the band’s experience of their own success to the guitar licks that have inspired overbite-air-guitaring for generations, it’s insufficiently interesting and not especially engaging.

An iconic album cover. I've heard a hundred dudes play the guitar part to "Wish You Were Here" but I have never listened to this album all the way through. Today's the day. On first listen, I'm into it. Shine On pt 1-5 intro makes me want to listen to Maggot Brain at first, then 4 minutes in the groove starts and I wish I was able to smoke a joint at work. It's very moody bass and organ backing track with some bluesy licks over top that just grows and grows. At 6 minutes it cools off for a melancholy synth solo. Guitar solo kicks back in at 7:30. The vocals start at 8:30. Around 11 minutes the saxophone solo kicks off and launches a heavier bass riff at 12 minutes that ends and the saxophone tapers us out. It's crazy that this is one of the top selling albums of all time, people are wild. Industrial intro to Welcome to the Machine is very moody. The synth sounds a little dated now, but I think that's just because everyone copied these sounds after this came out. Strained vocals, acoustic strums, drones, and little stabbing synths pops and pierces and futuristic laser wobbles. The song drags a little bit but I think it's a good emotional intro to Have a Cigar. Have a Cigar is great. I love Roy Harper's album Stormcock and knew he sang this song for Pink Floyd but had never heard it before. Sleazy and menacing. Hearing so many amateur acoustic covers of Wish You Were Here over the years had erased how absolutely grand the song is - it really blows you away. It's crazy how with thorough and intentional all of the mastering is- you can hear this little cough, sniffle, sigh at the beginning that really sets it up. It's like the "holy shit" moment at the end of Oh Comely that grounds things for a second. Shine One You Crazy Diamond pts 6-9 are a continuation of the jams from the first and a reprise of some of the same musical themes. Overall it makes me want to lay on a pillow on the floor in a softly lit room with some good speakers and just vibe.

I really enjoyed this record. Something about it hit all the right notes for me.

A classic Pink Floyd album. While I do think it is very good I still find that it not their best work, at least in my opinion. You only have 5 tracks to appreciate here and while they are all good I only find myself coming back for the title track. When I want to listen to Pink Floyd I'm much more inclined to put on Dark Side of the Moon over this.

One of Pink Floyd's best. 1 or 2. This and Dark Side are top 2. Albums concept about former member Syd Barrett, very sad life story of him. Have a Cigar and Wish you Were Here are A tier.

Shine on you crazy diamond more like shine on you crazy long ass song, But still it's great, pink floyd has a great story telling feature with the instruments, sounds and delays for the actual lyrics and song to start Welcome to the machine and Have a cigar remind me of their more rock approach to music, the same as Money from Dark Side of the Moon Crazy diamond part 6 - 100000 is also great, good outro for the album, also calm but energetic in pink floyd style, This is a band that if I had the opportunity to watch them live I'd take without thinking twice. Been listening to them my whole life and this album is one of the few 5/5 that I have, together with the likes of Led Zeppelin and Metallica

1. Curto pra caralho essas coisas conceituais, por mais que seja longa essa primeira música, a vibe é muito massa, parece que é um negócio pensado, não é um monte de hippie fazendo qualquer merda. Incrível como os caras conseguem fazer a guitarra cantar na música... e ainda fazem 2 timbres para parecer 2 vocalistas. Foda demais, pqp. 2. Desespero massa na voz dele, ainda curtindo as músicas conceituais. 3. Baixo fudido, a música me dá um sentimento de estar andando pela cidade a noite, sozinho, jaqueta de couro, fumando, indo pro rolê. 4. Foda, essa música sempre dá um feels, muito boa, energia massa, vontade de cantar sempre. O violão deslizando no começo é muito bom de ouvir. Bem lembra tempos de belas artes com o Will... 5. Muito massa como eles experimentam sons, banda fudida mesmo, genial. Achei muito curioso como eles nomearam as músicas, tipo parte 1-5 na primeira e agora 6-9, se tem algum significado mais foda, se é só a junção de partes, fiquei curioso. A diferença que faz uma banda boa ter uma música de 10 minutos de uma ruim que 5 minutos já cansa... Eles sempre trazem algo de novo, te deixa curioso, não vão pelo caminho mais fácil da repetição genérica. Álbum me impressionou, eu curto Pink Floyd justamente por essas paradas conceituais, gosto de sentir a vibe. Achei que seria um álbum com 3 músicas boas e 9 coisas estranhas, mas esse aqui foi enxuto e curti a vibe toda. Sentimento massa, e minha música preferida deles no álbum. 5 estrelas pela vibe.

Solos épicos de guitarra, solo de sax me conquista demais Esse álbum foi mais complexo que o normal pra mim. Ele não é um álbum "versátil". Eu comecei ouvindo ele enquanto trabalhava e percebi que ouvindo ele de fundo, ele acabava se tornando meio genérico. Aí eu parei na metade e recomecei realmente prestando atenção só nele. Aí ao longo da primeira música eu fui percebendo que ele precisava ser ouvido num volume alto, se não ele perdia o peso e impacto necessário. E também um som bom faz uma baita diferença, dado o número de detalhes e nuances. Resolvendo esses 3 pontos, aí sim o álbum brilha e vira outra parada. Aí sim ele começa a "fazer sentido". Tu vai entendendo o esmero do álbum e da experiência que ele tenta passar. Parece que acaba se assemelhando mais a assistir um filme, do que a só ouvir música despretensiosamente. Destaques para os solos de guitarra do álbum inteiro. Os solos do David Gilmour são fudidos demais. O cara coloca o coração em cada nota. Sabe exatamente o que tá fazendo. Destaque também pro solo de sax do final da primeira música. Solos de sax sempre me conquistam, E, é claro, pra Wish You Were Here, baita música foda, e foi interessante ver que o timbre diferenciado do começo dela, meio de rádio, tá diretamente ligado ao final da música anterior. Não tem como negar que é um álbum bem fora da curva, desde que consumido da "maneira correta". Ainda estou no processo de gostar de Pink Floyd além das músicas clássicas, nessa experiência de ouvir os álbuns deles dessa maneira aqui descrita. Talvez num futuro, a medida que eu me acostume e entenda melhor, se torne até um 5*, mas por enquanto acho um 4* bem sólido.

what a time. when i was 8 i had a really big The Wall phase and i was told that was music for drug addicts. i can tell you i enjoyed this completely sober

Today we have yet another Pink Floyd album. I’ve quite enjoyed most albums of their’s so far (Dark Side Of The Moon was fantastic, the other albums have been fine) so I’m curious to hear this one. I’ve heard that this album was made for their previous member Syd Barrett after his death, so I’m sure a lot of heart went into it. Songs I already knew: Wish You Were Here Favourites: Wish You Were Here This was an ok album. There are only 5 tracks yet sits at around 45 minutes, and I found this to be due to a lot of ambient sound that didn’t really contribute to the album as a whole. There were parts I really enjoyed, but also parts where my brain stopped paying attention as it just stopped being very interesting. the concept of this album is lovely, but from an entirely sonic point of view it didn’t really blow me away. It was nice, but nothing more.

Great album, already one of my favorites. The atmosphere of this album is out of this world.

One of the greatest classic rock albums of all time, but that's standard for Pink Floyd

I can write up this review before even listening. Love this album and listened to it plenty of times. Shine on you crazy diamond is beautiful and wish you were here has some of the simplest beautiful guitar work in a song. Overall the album showcases a lot of the instrumental work and balance they were famous for.

It's Pink Floyd, doing what they do. Will spend more time with it in the future.

This is THE desert island album. YT has 2 videos with the entirety of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, one is footage of Scotland and one is an artist painting a portrait of Syd. Both are excellent in my opinion. Easily in the top 10 of all albums in this project.

Really psychedelic and calming. I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

Bit lengthy

I know that it is considered a masterpiece and I can enjoy how well-made and complex it is. But it's just not my specific vibe right now.

Just sublime. Perfectly crafted with the all time classic Wish You Were Here. All knitted together with the beats from Mason, and the sublime tone from Gilmour. A well crafted album telling the greed of the music industry.

Having never actually listened to Pink Floyd before. Clearly I have heard much of their music over the years.... But never in the album unit. And it is rather wonderful. I understand why people enjoy it so. The instrumental parts are very good.

Every time I listen to this album is the best time I’ve ever listened to this album. Road tripping, coffee sipping, cold morning or hot night music. So thoroughly enjoyable. 5 songs, 44 minutes long. A small gem where nothing is too much or too little. I love it I love it I love it. My favorite Pink Floyd album.

I am sure I listened to this album in real time and thought it very edgy and avant garde. But today the Pink Floyd sound seems like the musical equivalent of shag carpet and bell-bottoms pants. That said … it was still fun to listen again. And I do think that title track ‘Wish You Were Here’ is a very good song.

5 songs. 44 min. One song says (parts 1-5) and the other says (parts 6-9). What else am I to expect from Pink Floyd honestly. Shine On You Crazy Diamond: I am a 50 year old man drinking my fifth glass of whiskey at a bar in a grimy part of town. I had a hard day at work and find my life unfulfilling. I refrain from looking my family in the eyes, especially my wife, who I know is having an affair behind my back. Likely with the neighbor while I try my best to stay away from home as much as possible. My children hardly call me their father anymore, already accepting the fact that I am dead to them. I smoke a cigar before downing the rest of my whiskey. The bartender, who I see as my only true friend, raises their eyebrows, asking if I want another one. I nod, and inside I regret it. I could be a better man, a better father, a better husband. Sadly, all I hear is the wailing of an electric guitar with slow tempo percussion accompanying, remembering a life I never had and always yearned for. (This is all in the first eight and a half minutes of instrumental.... RIP) Too long obviously. Once the vocals arrived I kind of got into it then it was another minute of instrumentals. Haha jojo reference. Welcome to the Machine: 7 min song. Great. You know that sound when you shake a laminated piece of paper. Yeah that. Over and over again. Have a Cigar: Smoking is bad. Wish You Were Here: I had half my headset off and legit thought the first minute was just straight silence. Shine on Crazy Diamond again: Vocals start at minute 5 I actually would've really enjoyed this album if the songs were so long. I know that's Pink Floyd's thing and kinda common around this time in this genre but still. Kinda wack.

this has two songs on it. its a jojo reference. you have to share the same time for vocals and instruments so you can really see everybody shine. everybody gets a gold star. it’s a filler to me. not bad but not great either. classic floyd sound 3/5

Very good. Another band that was omnipresent when I was younger, but didn’t charm me enough to seek out any of their stuff to buy. Although in high school some friends of mine who were into Pink Floyd had me tag along with them to a concert during their tour for The Division Bell. That was a great show.

So this is another in the solid classic rock albums that’s admittedly very good but that I don’t really need to hear again. Of the six songs, four are on heavy rock radio rotation, and at least one of the others sneaks on frequently, the last being a reprise. Not bad at all, not necessarily something I feel the need to revisit though.

I’ve always liked Pink Floyd, but they’ve never been one of my favorites. And I’ve always been very impressed by David Gilmour. Boy is it fun to get blazed and watch lasers shoot at you while their music plays. Dark Side or The Wall might get 4s out of me, but this one has always been a little lackluster. Coincidentally, on Sunday evening an 85 year old family friend brought a box of old records of his to family dinner for me to look at. It was mostly Dean Martin, Barbara Streisand, and Andy Williams. But a first pressing of this album was in there and made me go “Whoa!” as I pulled it out. As soon as I can figure out a fair price to give him for it (It’s looking like upwards of $80), I will be adding it to my collection.

Absolute masterpiece. The production and instrumentation were awesome and provided listeners with a very mesmerizing and relaxing experience. "Wish You Were Here" is an all-time classic and "Welcome to the Machine" and "Have a Cigar" were perfect as well. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" parts 1-9 were great, but just a little too long and slow for my liking.

A favorite

A classic album by a classic band, and the musical equivalent of a Salvador Dali or a Giorgio De Chirico painting. Oneiric sonic landscapes, plus the anthemic folk ballad that the title-track is. The four guitar notes of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" are of course iconic, and they lead to a world that's part-wonderful-dream, part-anxious-nightmare. I remember discovering this album in my uncle's record collection thirty years ago. I was not the same kid after that. At the time, I didn't understand that this album had a very precise--if slightly obfuscated--thematic / autobiographical intent. I had not heard of Syd Barrett yet, you see. But I could sense that a ghost was looming over those songs all the same. Little did I know that some ghosts could still roam this earth as officially 'alive' human beings, and that the one haunting this LP even had a name. Yet this didn't matter, because the music had already whispered said name into my ears. It sounded like gushes of wintery wind blowing over the plains of madness, both desolate and breathtaking in their surreal beauty. It sounded like watches melting on the branches of forlorn trees, or like a radio station picking up AM waves from the last radio station on Earth after the apocalypse--whether a personal or a global one. In other words, it sounded like Pink Floyd writing their prog-rock legend inside their listeners' mind, once again. 5/5, what else? Jeg hørte det her album imens jeg læste. Det er nok det første fulde pink Floyd album, jeg lytter til. Ud over titelnummeret kendte jeg ikke så mange af de andre sange. Også et lidt sjovt album, da der kun var 5 sange, hvor det første og sidste nummer begge var +10 minutter og ret instrumentale. Men godt nok album alligevel.

This was a time machine. 15 years old, bang into Pink Floyd and playing WYWH (the song) on guitar. I expected it to be worse in retrospect than it actually was. Shine on was really emotional, which is something The Floyd often lack, especially when you know that it's for Syd, and hear the (presumably apocryphal) story of him turning up during recording. And the title track remains an unqualified masterpiece. The emotion in the lyrics, the simplicity of the guitar, the very un-Floyd like lack of a seventeen minute outro, it's all there. It loses a bit for Have a Cigar and Welcome to the Machines being a little too proggy for my tastes, but overall, a very enjoyable listen.

This album goes from atmospheric to semi-theatrical in the longest, but hard-hitting way I've ever heard. I just listened to this album for the umpteenth time, but this hits different. After hearing the lyrics during what seems to be a scary burnout, it didn't cure me, but it's like talking to someone that understands you; nearly brought me to tears. Anyway, driving more towards modern synthesizers rather than pure rock like in their other albums, still in that experimental phase, though in here, it's more realized, as it's less a synth demo and more of an example of what happens when you combine soft rock/folk/easy listening with otherworldly sounds that come with the synths.

Pretty good. Nothing jaw dropping, but I will listen again at some point.

Great listen! Best with no distractions, taking in the music. Focusing on all the dynamic sound changes, volume changes, dynamic structure changes of the song. Masterpiece!

Cool instrumentals and overall sound building

Easily some of my favorite type of beats to zone out too and just feel the every instrument. I know it’s the obvious choice but the dark side of the moon beats this album. My favorite songs on this album is have a cigar and wish you were here

Overrated

Long Time Favorite.

Absolutely amazing. Classic. Emotion throughout every song. Stories are written through the music itself, the lyrics are just another layer to form perfection. Production is out of this world. One of the craziest deliveries from an artist/band of all time. Transports you to another realm of music in your mind. Truly outstanding. One of my personal favorite musical creations ever.

Yes. What can i say, if 1 song is 50% of the album, and that one song is top tier, the album oughta be top tier. Shine on and wish you were here are fantastic Welcome to the machine and have a cigar are a bit on the lower end, but would be top tier for any other band.

Going into this I only knew the title track, which I've loved for a while. I'm not crazy about Welcome to the Machine, but I enjoyed everything else (to my surprise tbh). The first chunk of Shine On You Crazy Diamond was stronger than the 2nd part in my opinion.

I like a lot of Pink Floyd records. This is one of the better ones, but in the interest of not ranking several of them with five stars, I'll give it four.

So that's the secret. Instead of putting filler songs on your album, just make 4 or 5 gems and stretch them out. Then release shorter versions on singles and boom - perfect album.

Decent album, DSotR is better, but this is still Pink Floyd. Welcome to the Machine was great, I hated the intro to Wish You Were Here. Have to give credit to Pink Floyd for their influence on other musicians.

The music is good, pleasant to listen to, but probably not in heavy rotation.

It was fantastic. Made me go on a pink floyd binge for the next two hours. One of those albums that just feels refreshing every single time its played. Great tribute to Syd Barrett and a incredible journey that the band takes you on through their thought process of leaving their former frontman and friend behind (Syd didn't die btw he just lost his mind from too much acid)

This album art looks AI generated. sounds good but I am usually not a fan of long tracks, specifically jam tracks. That being said, it was still a well made album.

5/5. Scary, beautiful, personal, ethereal. This is a perfect album. The instrumentation is the best Pink Floyd has ever sounded and the collaboration was strongest here. The guitar and keyboard/synthesizer really shine (get it?) here. This is one of the rare occurrences that if this album was 10-15 minutes longer, it would be better. Hard to not feel enraptured by the music and lyrics, many different themes but all feel connected and flow so well. This is an album ahead of its time and holds up even today as a new experience for anybody listening to Pink Floyd for the first time. Might be my favorite of theirs, still up in the air.

Moody journey with minimal lyrics. Good use of a variety of instruments that made the album interesting.

slow paced, but it's so pretty that it doesn't feel boring somber vibes but still easy listening guitar solos are so good but when he does sing he goes crazy! welcome to the machine is objectively good, but I don't really vibe w it, the lasers are kinda grating I like when there's smooth transitions between songs I have loved wish you were here for forever it's such a pretty song, my fav on this album overall: very good album, it makes perfect sense why it's so popular. the band was obviously going through a rough time when they made this lol

Road trip camping music. Long buildup that pays off. Key changes midway through songs are wonderful too.

All time great. I like the studio noises, chatter, laughter in Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Also the whole song. Noise intro to Welcome to the Machine is so good. Have a Cigar is my least favorite musically but makes up for it with story. Wish You Were Here is is legendary.

I really love Pink Floyd's instrumentals, so I really enjoy Shine On You Crazy Diamond, all parts of it. There's nothing that really stands out for me in the album, but it's so good from top to bottom. Really good listening.

100/5, best album ever dedicated to one of my favourite tragic ex-musicians.

Have a Cigar has such a nice beat, and I really like the vocals. Welcome to the Machine felt a little slow and boring to me, and the synths were a bit annoying. Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) didn't really grab me the first couple of listens, but I'll give it a few more tries. Wish You Were Here is absolutely beautiful. On third listen, the intro to Shine On is really vibey and kinda epic, reminds me a little bit of that Flume song.

Definitely had friends with this poster in their bedroom. I do like Pink Floyd but a lot of their songs were... not ruined, exactly, but "compromised" by being overplayed to death on classic rock radio for the past 40 years. The title track here being one of the very worst offenders. It's like sonic wallpaper now. As far as Pink Floyd's long form stuff, Animals was way better. Have a Cigar is great though. 2 stars.

I love this album, I don’t even really need to listen to this one. wish you were here was one of the first songs I learned on guitar as a teenager and even in my 30s it’s probably one of my favorite tunes to belt on an acoustic given the right opportunity. SYCD is fantastic. This thing probably blew the socks off people when it was released.

Nothing says "Pink Floyd" like a 5-song album with 45 minutes of music. Oh, and two of those "songs" are actually one song in 9 parts and it's really important that the first 5 parts be in one "song" at the beginning of the album, and the last 4 parts be in another "song" at the end of the album. I have no idea WHY that was so important but I totally, completely, 100% understand THAT it was so important. :D

A surprisingly enchanting nine-part epic cushions everything I fucking hate about Pink Floyd. Holds its own. But don't expect any PF scores higher than this.

Great sound and atmosphere. Probably need more knowledge of the band to be moved by the Syd Barrett tribute element of it but I was still kinda moved. Good album. Best song: Wish You Were Here

This is a singular masterpiece by one of the best and most unique musical acts in the last 50 years. Can you think of any great musician/group that sounded like Pink Floyd? I can't either. They are their own genre.

One of the most badass album covers of all time. It's been awhile since I've listened to the whole album, or any Pink Floyd album, in full. The instrumentals on the first track are tight. Great guitar playing by Gilmore. The synth work is very moody and sets a somber tone for the rest of the album. Welcome to the Machine is not my favorite... Have a Cigar is definitely a Rogers Waters song. Motifs of corporate greed, I'm sure they heard a lot of the things he sings about after the success of Dark Side of the Moon. The guitar tone is insane. Wish You Were Here is one of the best Pink Floyd Songs. Just an overall great tune. After listening to the whole thing, it's probably my fourth favorite Pink Floyd album. It is important in their discography though. Marks a change into the concept albums that came after it. The run from Dark Side of the Moon to The Wall is probably the strongest run of albums ever.

Better than I thought it would be.

540 albums is a long time to wait for some Pink Floyd. Almost as long as the wait for the first track to get going… But to be fair, the emotional payoff when the vocals come in is worth it. I found Welcome To The Machine a bit heavy-handed in its message and it doesn’t really go anywhere, but Have a Cigar does a much better job at tackling a similar subject matter, and is relatively concise and accessible by Pink Floyd standards too. The title track is great, no complaints there. All in all I don’t agree that the album is GOAT material, but I do ‘get’ why it’s in that bracket for some people. The ambition/scope of it has a kind of goaty quality, I think.

Absolutely brilliant, a masterpiece. Especially as a follow-up to Dark Side of the Moon. Shine on you crazy diamond bookends the album, the long introduction until those haunting guitar notes come in is just so great to listen to. Welcome to the Machine follows this, a hopeless song about the drudgery of life. Have a Cigar sounds upbeat, but expresses the band's frustration with the record industry, also shown on the cover art where two people are making a deal, and one is clearly getting burned. The title track, Wish You were Here is another great song, this and Shine on you crazy diamond combine as a tribute to their former band member Syd Barrett. Overall, a great album, everything flows together, the gold standard of what a concept album should be.

I’ve listened to Wish You Were Here many times and I always forget just how great of an album it is. Welcome to the Machine in particular is such a hauntingly beautiful song. If the Wall didn’t exist, it’d be my favorite Pink Floyd album.

Probably my favorite Pink Floyd album with the title track and Shine on You Crazy Diamond being among their overall best songs. That leaves only Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar which I count among the band's top deep tracks as well. This will be the first album I've listened to where the entire album gets added to my playlist...some of the best guitar playing ever recorded.

Sublime, although I prefer the live versions of Wish You Were Here and Shine on you Crazy Diamond. Not really sure why they mixed it like they did, but I guess they know what they were doing.

Namely being sick in my mates toilet at his university accom whilst “Have a Cigar was playing”, funny with hindsight. Intangibly linked to my first year of university. AL: euphoric listening experience. In the dark with high quality headphones on. One of the best music listening experiences I’ve had, maybe ever. Truly everything on here is brilliant. No filler. Definitely a nice listen. The instrumentals are pretty awesome with tons of good solos from various instruments, including quite a bit of jazz influence which I enjoyed. I wasn’t mind blown like I wanted to be from this one though. 7/10

In March of this year, I lost my grandfather to cancer. I can't even begin to explain how I felt back then, because at that time I didn't know how to describe how I felt. The only time where I felt as if I had any clarity was when the song Wish You Were Here played. At the time, I wasn't a huge fan of the song, even though I regarded this album very highly, but I never put the song on by choice. Especially not at that point in my life. But then one day the song came on in my shuffle. And I really paid attention to what I was hearing. And I broke down and started crying. Between then, and the day my grandfather died, I only heard the song one more time, and nearly cried then as well, but forced myself not to because I was in school. And after his death, after I finally found that clarity I had been looking for back then, the song meant even more to me. If someone were to ask me for an album that I believe is about as close to perfect as you can get, I would probably point to this one. From the second the album starts, until the second it ends, and every moment of the 44 minutes and 10 seconds in between that, this album is using every tactic it has against you to draw you in. Each song is so layered and filled with deeply refined performances, it amazes me this actually exists. To be honest, it's a little hard to talk about this, because what more can I say about Wish You Were Here that someone hasn't said in the last 48 years. It's fucking Wish You Were Here. I really like it. It's a ten out of ten. As far as I know, it is the first album I can remember liking enough to give a score of 10. I urge anyone who hasn't already heard this to give it a chance. A single word isn't even spoken until 8 minutes into the first song. Some people might be put off by a 15 minute opening track that is nearly entirely instrumental. But trust me, when you hear those four notes for the first time, you will become a different person.

I can't get on board

This is one of the greatest albums of all time from one of the greatest bands of all time. I could spend hours gushing about Wish You Were Here and I'll TRY to keep this short but godamn do I love this album. Right off the bat Shine on you Crazy Diamond hits you with that bassy synth section accompanied by one of the most hauntingly beautiful solos ever written in the history of music. this shit just puts you in a mood and it never let's up for all 13 and a half minutes. Welcome to the Machine was an anthem for me as I'd ride the city bus to go clock in at a shitty dead end job. Musically this song is absolutely perfect and I wouldn't change a thing. Have a cigar is a hilariously sarcastic song about the music industry. You just have to nod your head to its funky groove. Roy Harpers delivery on lyrics such as "it can be made into a monster, if we all pull together as a team" is lyric that somehow finds a way to almost always be stuck in my head Wish you were here is an ode to Syd Barret their original singer/song writer (as is Shine On... I'm fairly positive) and its probably the "weakest" song on the album. I only say that because one song has to be worse than the others. The line "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl" has for whatever reason just never worked for me both lyrically and on delivery. yet it still somehow manages to be a masterpiece. The acoustic riff that drives the song is an absolute earworm Then you got the 2nd half of Shine on you Crazy Diamond which caps off what is potentially the greatest prog rock song of all time. While I prefer the first half over the 2nd the guitar work here is still top notch and it ends the album just as strong as it starts. This is one of the few "perfect" albums I've heard in my life. Even though it more than likely won't be the only album I give a 5 star rating to as I continue using this app I hold it in much higher regard than I do pretty much all the others (spoilers warning: I like Animals even more than I like this album).

Extremely instrumental heavy but it didn’t matter as much, the lyrical sections were so strong it made each song a great listen. Just a shame these weren’t a larger proportion of the album.

Pink Floyd is one of the greats. Wish you were here is one Pink Floyd's most popular songs, but I feel the rest of the album gets overshadows by other greats like Dark Side, Wall, Meddle, and Animals. Overall there is some solid Prog rock in this album with shine on you crazy diamond and some new territory for pink flyod making a simple acoustic song with with wish you were here, but tracks like Welcome to the Machine and Have a cigar were weak in my opinion. Best Pink Floyd album beside Animals for me, cant believe I havent listened to it considering the fact I already listened to DSOTM and Animals too being one of my fav albums of all time.

I first heard Shine on you Crazy Diamond as a thirteen year old. Away on a school organised adventure holiday it was the opening music to the safety induction. I was captivated by the music, absorbed nothing the instructor told. It’s a classic, essential, brilliant album.

One of the first albums that got me into classic rock as a kid. Relistening now while in the middle of a moderately predatory pyramid scheme (aka academia) brings new meaning to this album that feels dedicated to the pressures of selling out

Perfection

even though pink floyd is adjacent to a lot of the "classic rock" music i got into in middle school, they are one band that i really have somehow avoided until now. my parents just weren't really into them, so i never got exposed and i think a lot of what they play on the radio was just so overplayed that i never really gave them a fair shot. despite that, for years i told myself and others that i didn't like them at all. well here is a shot at it for real this time. i actually did enjoy this album. i can't say i like it as much on the first listen as people seem to rave about it, but i can see myself enjoying it more with repeated listens. i think the quality of songs here are better than the typical radio fare that gets played. just interesting, progressive stuff. it's cool. even the title track, which used to bug me for it's overplay on radio really works well in the sequence of the album and i was able to listen to it with new ears and appreciate the sentiment of it more than i ever have before. fun stuff. favorite song(s): Shine On You Crazy Diamond (both) Have a Cigar Wish You Were Here

Love this album. Huge fan of Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts 1-5 so it's a fantastic way to start an album. Wish You Were Here is a classic but overall, a great album that brings back some good memories

It's kind of a perfect little album, love the backstory about Syd Barrett and the way the opener and closer just bookend this record so well. The songs in-between are absolute bangers! Someone recently asked to define myself with 3 bands. I can't narrow myself to just three in total, but when it comes to classic 60s & 70s rock my top favorites are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. This album is gnarly, psychedelic, experimental, emotional prog rock at its absolute finest. I love this album so much (my 2nd favorite of the band) I played it in a loop today. I get lost in it every time, and Wish You Were Here is one of the greatest songs ever written. This band & album gives me goosebumps. Someone better play this at my funeral. 5 stars.

I remember having this on cassette tape around 1992. By then, Wish You Were Here had passed its seventeenth birthday, but I distinctly remember the classic Fire Handshake cover art (something I’d later have in poster form in my college dorm room) and the cassette itself was gray. It was hard for me to believe that a band could have songs that long. I’ve always loved Wish You Were Here, the song, and it’s still one of the only songs who’s opening chords I can play on my guitar. Need to practice more! On this re-listen, I was struck by the near perfection of Crazy Diamond as a “nighttime driving song” and also wowed by Have A Cigar. It’s gritty and out of place on this album, but it rips. David Gilmore has called WYWH his favorite album. The title track means a lot to me: “Did they get you to trade Your heroes for ghosts?, Hot ashes for trees?, Hot air for a cool breeze?, Cold comfort for change?, Did you exchange, A walk-on part in the war, For a lead role in a cage?, How I wish, how I wish you were here, We're just two lost souls, Swimming in a fish bowl, Year after year, Running over the same old ground, What have we found?, The same old fears, Wish you were here.” Beautiful. Five stars for this one.

Work trip

What can you say about Pink Floyd except, they know how to make a good musical experience. It's a bit of a lost art form which is a shame but it does make it harder to listen to individual songs from the album. "Ahh yes, I enjoyed 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Pts. 1-5' specifically around the 8 minute mark, absolute classic if you ask me." I might go against the grain here and say that the titular song was probably my least favourite on the album, but this is a album I 100% will be listening too again when I just have 45 minutes of spare time.

You just made the longest-charting album of all time, a stone classic . It’s okay to take a breather.

Confession part 2 Never listened to Pink Floyd First half gave, Nevada, New Mexico, desert 70s film with Orange hue editing. Second half gave a rich man’s house with shag carpet, wearing emerald colored suit. All That randomness to say, good composition to paint a good visual for me (which is what my brain goes for). Not what I would throw on to vibe personally, but it is a good vibe .

Pink Floyd may be best remembered for Dark Side of the Moon, but Wish You Were Here proved neither masterpiece was a fluke. The raw emotion can be felt throughout, almost like it’s an ode to a fallen soldier. To the band, that may as well have been the case, and their diamonds shine through from the very beginning. I acknowledge our societal overuse of “Orwellian” to describe any social structure our collective conscience disagrees with, but “Welcome to the Machine” sets the stage nicely for Animals (Animal Farm) and especially The Wall (1984). I hear “you know you’re nobody’s fool,” but over my shoulders I feel the late 20th century reincarnations of Henry Ford and Adam Smith. The funky synth of “Have a Cigar” can ride the gravy train all the way until it fades into a fog and turns over to the radio static intro of “Wish You Were Here,” the band’s most complete, heartfelt, and even thought-provoking work. If future civilizations wish for a peek into the maddening quandaries of the modern-day human, they should look no further than this gem. Would you rather have a walk-on part in a war, or a lead role in a cage? As long as we don’t know we’re in a cage to begin with, does it even matter? Dark Side of the Moon put Pink Floyd in the mainstream, but Wish You Were Here established their place on top of the world, or perhaps entirely separate from it. I don’t know. As long as I can believe we’re all lost souls swimming in a fish bowl and it’s not just me, I’m not too concerned about being found.

This album confirmed for me that my favorite place to listen to music is in my car. Shine On You Crazy Diamond threw me into a soundscape as I drove down 288 to the psych clinic. On my way home, Wish You Were Here and the second Shine On track made me wish the traffic was a little bit worse so my drive would take a little bit longer. The first part of the second Shine On track gave me some serious Electric Light Orchestra vibes. Given the timeline of both bands and their status as prog rock legends, I guess that tracks. I do wonder what kind of contact, if any, the bands had with each other. My one critique of the record is that Welcome to the Machine feels dated. It felt like more of a standard prog rock number than a track on one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Overall, incredible album and it may get another listen this very week.

3 stars immediately for Wish you were here alone. It gets 4 stars as I don't mind the instrumental sound and welcome to the machine. I probably won't ever play it through again in it's entirety though so not a 5.

Really fantastic album and I know Pink Floyd isn't for everyone. Though it is a short album (in terms of number of songs), it feels like the 26 minute long "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" is many songs in one, which it is. "Wish You Were Here" is where Pink Floyd works effectively to combine their ability to write a hit (which they very much have) with their need to prog-rock their way through a song.

I don't think this recorded adds much to the list. It's a lot like Dark Side Of The Moon. While DSOTM was not as boring as I remembered, this record was more boring than I remembered. Over 2 minutes to the first chord change, for god's sake.

This is a 5 song album, but two songs are over 10 minutes long! I hate the mere notion that I have to listen to songs that long. The first 4 and a half minutes of the first song is just ambiance, and it doesn't start having multiple voices in the music until later (voices being other instruments) Actual voices come in at the fucking 8-minute mark! This sucks! The music itself is passable but does not warrant the songs being as long as they are. The title track is good, but I'm not a big fan of it. It doesn't elevate the score for this album 1 bit either. This is a 2

In my opinion top three album by Pink Floyd, on par with Dark Side of the Moon and Meddle. Beautiful, long passages of instrumentation, great guitar work by Gilmour, amazing bass lines by Waters, even though I still dont like him, and top notch complimentary work by Mason and Wright. One of those albums that can't be overplayed, maybe except to another hiking trip, when someone takes the guitar out and plays Wish You Were Here for the hundredth time. But other than that, I love every second of it.

Overall this album feels coherent and well-rounded in terms of the whole concept album thing (at least I'm pretty sure it is), but the particular genre of 70s-psychedelic-prog-rock they had going on back in the doesn't appeal to me. I'm also a tiny bit biased because when I hear Pink Floyd all I can think about is all the boomer dads in their 50s thinking this is the best music ever bestowed onto mankind. Mid band IMO

This very well may be the greatest album ever written. It's difficult to narrow it down, especially when there are two other albums by the same band in the top five or ten of the greatest albums of all time.

An epic album that feels like the realization of an idea from front to back. One of the 1001 albums on this list that truly deserves to be on it.

Loved this album. It was mixed beautifully and full of synthesizers and sounds that were intriguing and enchanting. Will definitely add this to my collection of albums to play and zone out to.

Funny that Pink Floyd is a UK band, I honestly didn't realize that. It should have been apparent on some of the way they said certain lyrics, but reading this today kind of shocked me. I'm happy anytime we get a Floyd album on here because I never listened to them growing up but knew of their power. This was another really great album. Some long tracks, seemed like they were having fun jamming out. I wouldn't call it my favorite Floyd album but it's a great one.

Really, really dig this one. In the same vein as Dark Side of the Moon, at least sonically. Doesn't seem as concept-heavy perhaps, but still very strong. Love the long, meandering prog tracks. Out of five, I'm saving four: the one not making the cut is "Have a Cigar," which is the shortest track but still pretty enjoyable. It feels weird to have only really listened to Pink Floyd now through this project, because I really dig their style. Bravo, gentlemen. This is one I could definitely see growing to a five star with more time and listens. Favorite tracks: Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here, Welcome to the Machine. Album art: A classic, maybe not as iconic as DSOTM, but deserves a place in the pantheon. Man shaking hands with a man on fire, on a studio backlot. The framing looks strikingly modern, and I just love the little portion of the border that's burned away for asymmetry. Amazing. Metro Boomin essentially remixed this cover for "Heroes & Villains," I don't blame him. This one's a doozy. 4.5/5

First time listening to Pink Floyd and it was very relaxing, the album is a good listen, Have a Cigar and Wish You Were Here were my favourite songs.

A lil bit too concept for me. I like Pink Floyd with more lyrics

track 1- one of the best intro’s ive ever heard, mind blowing song track 2- very interesting parts, song almost moves into different genre’s at times. so before its time track 3- some brilliant guitars and just all around good track 4- no words needed track 5- not actually heard this, v good. really fucking good. too high to write more

Shine on parts 1-5 - Those 4 notes hey, they just won't go away. welcome to the machine - not been focusing enough but everything I zoned into was greet. could be so many separate songs this. Have a cigar - geetus Wish you were here - proper that absolutely beautiful Parts 6-9 - love it all especially the funky bit

A testament to the great, expansive, pinnacle of Rock that occurred in the mid-70's. Wish You Were Here is an incredible album and should be appreciated. It is more operatic than Dark Side and showcases clever songwriting in the transitions

SHINE ON YOU CRA-ZY DIAMOND

This album is only 40 minutes long but it feels much longer.There are only five songs but like three of them are over 10 minutes long.I don’t understand how people can listen to shine of you crazy Diamond.It’s too long and most of it is kinda boring guitar noodling.BUT wish you were here is a great song with a top tier solo so I’m giving this album a 4.

Pink Floyd has great taste when it comes to crafting and pacing albums. They created some terrific album experiences designed to be listened to in one sitting. I think “Wish You Were Here” benefits from a front-to-back listen just as much as “Dark Side of the Moon.” The big achievement here is "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," split into two largely instrumental pieces that bookend the album. Both halves are stunning and show off Pink Floyd's range. And that saxophone that comes in around the 11-minute mark of the first half? It's one of those moments that stops you in your tracks. I don't often think of Pink Floyd as a jazz rock band but they have their moments. The section of the second "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" that goes from 6:20-9:00 is fantastic. Pink Floyd does psychedelic rock better than maybe anyone but they could switch into a cool, grooving fusion band too and sound totally natural. "Welcome to the Machine" is one of those songs I use to get annoyed at on classic rock radio because it got played so much. It's a stunning, haunting, dystopian nightmare of a song. In the context of this album, it's incredible. At a Fourth of July BBQ? Not so much. But this is a gripe with Q104.3 DJs, not Pink Floyd. I love the laser synths at 6:00. Great choice to bring in a guest vocalist to play the record executive on "Have a Cigar." He really hams it up and plays the part. Awesome song. And of course the title track -- another one that's overplayed but when you take some time away from it, you realize how sad and touching and beautiful it is. Great album cover. I grew up actually not really liking Pink Floyd and it took me a while to get into them. I think this is a byproduct of them only having a few songs that would fit classic rock radio time frames for car listens. I always just felt like they were "stoner worship" music and every stoner I knew had to incessantly bloviate about the genius of it and that turned me off for a few years until I actually sat and listened in my mid 20s. I love them now and I think that this might be my least-played album of theirs so I'm excited to jump into it. Great start. The intro of the first track sounds like an atmospheric track from Star Wars. "Wish You Were Here" is probably my favorite Pink Floyd song, and it's in the discussion of being in the upper echelon of best songs of all time. It's so, so beautiful. The guitar work is masterful, the lyrics are masterful, and my favorite- the emotive and dynamic vocal performance is masterful. Truly a song that makes me really feel things and I genuinely haven't gotten sick of it after hearing it thousands of times in my life. This is a 5. Such a strong release.

Shine on you crazy diamond part 1-5: Love the guitar going off, love its tone. The band compliments the guitar well accenting together. Large variety of louds and softs, shorts and longs. The tenor sax solo sold it completely me, the tangibility of the music is very present, this would be so exhilarating to play along with. I didnt even realize 13min had passed, very entertaining This is currently my music vibe these days so this first song was a good one Welcome the machine: The sinth was a great add, gave the song extra texture and world (went from western voyage guitar style to future exploritory and outerworldy) which is perfect considering the title is welcome the machine. This is how I would think the words welcome the machine should sound. Corolated with Mr.Roboto - Styx as well which compound how much I enjoy the idea of the song on top of simply enjoying the song. Very noice👌👌 Have a cigar I love how these songs that are so slow are so full and edging towards too busy. The first two song were better but this one is still solid. Keep with the same ideas as previous songs but doesn't hit me as hard. This one is my least favorite out of the 5 Wish you were here: The riff is classic, one of those you just expect people to know. Song is peaceful, a nice step back from the first few songs Shine on you crazy diamond part 6-9: The time change when the high hat comes in is such a good set up for when things star getting more intense. Very into the sneaky build from nothing to squealing guitars on top of each other going off but with respect. The slow time change! Again with the respect, this time for the singer. All the different parts flow together so well while simultaneously getting lost in the sauce. Im impressed by how exploritory this music is but how much it doesn't quite go out of bounds. Really stretching the creativity of the listener and the musician to connect the dots of what's happening. We've now hit a mental break at the 10nth minute to slowly bring us back down for the song to end and go into whatever song was next. Also side note from the album, but free bird was the next song that queued!! Which is crazy cause I could stop thinking about how much this last song was just a wacky free bird! The music gods understand what going in for sure😂 The third and fourth song had me questioning for a 4 star, but this is an easy 5 stars for this album. Very cool, very mentaly rewarding

I've listed to this album once before, and "have a cigar" is on my main Playlist. I love how little regard they showed for how an LP is "supposed to be". Over half of the album is a 26 minute song, and one that is largely instrumental. Gilmour is amazingly versatile, playing ethereal, psychadelic parts with the same ease as his crunchy blues riffs. Waters really brings the funk with his bass playing, particularly on "have a cigar" his interplay with Gilmour's guitar is often very interesting. I'm not a big fan of Gilmour's voice. It often sounds strained, in an unpleasant way to me. At times, the album seems experimental just for the sake of being experimental. Which isn't necessarily bad, but doesn't make for magnum opus material in my opinion. A good album, but not Pink Floyd's best work.
