Pink Floyd at it's best....I'd give it a 5, but gotta make room for Dark Side of the Moon....

Today I got my third helping of Pink Floyd, this time with the album Wish You Were Here. This is Floyd's ninth studio album, and deals with themes of mental health, depression, and alienation, while also criticising the music industry (notably: Welcome to the Machine). Shine on You Crazy Diamond is based on former member Syd Barrett, who had to leave the band due to deteriorating mental health issues. Have a Cigar is a rockin' tune sung by Roy Harper which is located smack in the middle of this melancholic masterpiece. It provides the shot in the arm that this record needs at just the right moment! Wish You Were Here is an absolutely beautiful song! I believe this album gets some flak from critics, and listeners alike because it is compared to the stellar masterpiece that Pink Floyd released directly prior to this album, "Dark Side of the Moon". Anything would pale in comparison to that massive classic! Overall, because of the melancholic mood of this record, it is not my favourite of Pink Floyd's records, but it still deserves its time on the podium for all that it did for the prog rock genre as well as music as a whole. This things only 45 minutes and 5 songs, two of those being 15 minute guitar solos so there legit no room for error. I don’t usually like ridiculously long guitar solos but these ones are real emotional and the couple song they wedge between em are so solid so the structure of the album is the most standout thing but it’s really interesting and it works

What can you say, it's a classic. Floyd got the most out of 70's studio tech by far. They certainly had vision.

So uh. I am a little underwhelmed. It's not bad by any means, but I wasn't super emotionally affected by anything. Maybe I expect too much from certain groups after hearing all the hype. I hear "Wish You Were Here" a lot on classic rock radio so I'm a little sick of it - sorry! Still, I really dug the guitar work on Shine On You Crazy Diamonds (Pts. 1-5), and Have a Cigar was pretty neat as well! It wasn't super duper amazing to me, but maybe it just needs another listen. Definitely a solid album everyone indeed must hear at least once, though.

When I was younger I thought this was the best Floyd album, but now I think I can admit that Dark Side Of The Moon is better. Even so, it's about as good as Pink Floyd is ever going to get. Moody, maudlin, angry at the world, but still compelling.

Excellent, but short album.

A good album, but not great.

After more than 500 albums, many psychedelic and experimental music among them, and one early Pink Floyd album, I was expecting to enjoy it less, mainly because of possible repetitiveness. However, it's indeed a great album despite any previous concept.

I wish I could give this album 5 stars. "Wish You Were Here" & "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" are two of my all-time favorite Pink Floyd songs. However, "Have A Cigar" is one of my all-time least favorite Pink Floyd songs. I'm indifferent to "Welcome To The Machine." 4/5: A flawed masterpiece.

I really believe this is a work of art, or at least it sounds that way. Every single factor of the music feels like it was placed with intense care and thought. Maybe that’s not what was happening in the studio during the recording, but that’s what the end product was. However, I personally don’t think I can listen to this casually. I would need to be in a specific mood to listen to any of the songs, and nevertheless, I would need to have a full listen through of the album to satiate that mood. Still, this album is excellent and overall a great time. Favorite track: Wish You Were Here

Across the Universe movie vibes. Shine On's length was intimidating but masterfully executed to feel full and complete without dragging on or being repetitive. The lyrics also felt organic to the song and not like a tacked on after thought. Flutes and Saxophones always appreciated. Didn't realize I knew Wish You Were Here. The album feels like an ethereal LSD trip in Parts.

I truly think Pink Floyd get overhyped by people who make one band their whole personality (or was that just people I met? 🤔). But I still quite like them tbh, this album feels like rock at it's core, but done in a novel way. One of the top 5 Pink Floyd albums. Not a 5 for me in the end. Entertaining and interesting album that I'll revisit sometime though. Missing that true spark of connection for me though.

I give the album a high rating only because of the "Wish You Were Here" and @"Have a Cigar"

I was pretty sure I knew every song on this album – well, there are only five. I hadn’t ever listened to it start to finish though. I knew it was a concept album - partly un homage to Syd Barrett and was fully on board with it. I hadn’t ever realised ‘Shine on you crazy Diamond’ had 900 parts to it but I was fully committed and very into it until the last ‘song’ or the last 712 parts of Crazy Diamond. That’s when my interest began to wane, and even though I appreciate what a clever and well-crafted album it is, my concentration dipped. I could’ve done with track number five being a completely different song. I do think it was very poignant and clever without being smug. A solid experience and much as I might have tuned out towards the end I do appreciate PF a lot but in smaller doses.

I knew every note of this album in high school. I never reach for it anymore. That's how I feel about most of Floyd's catalog, save for Piper. Not that I don't like them, but I just OD'd on it. I find it hard rating these classic rock albums. The intro to Shine On has always dragged on too long, IMO, and I say this as someone for whom Gilmour is his favorite guitarist. But there's too much keyboard noodling for my tastes. But when Roger starts singing, it's all good. The intro to Welcome to the Machine is great, though. Menacing. Such a weird song, too. Subtle time changes. The music sounds very Doctor Who. In a good way. Have a Cigar: Another killer into. I dig songs that are immediately recognizable. Title track: I mean, what can you say about it, other than it's great. The second helping of Shine On is great, too. I dig the See Emily Play quote at the end. Well, I enjoyed that. The musicianship and songwriting and production are all aces. Still, it feels very high school to me. I wonder how soon I'll feel like listening to it again. I know PF struggled creatively in the wake of Dark Side, having achieved everything they ever set out to do. There was a lot of "OK, now what?" But they pulled through with an album that's still speaking to millions of people all these years later. Impressive.

So I listened to Wish You Were Here twice, because it appeals more to me than most Pink Floyd stuff, but not throughout and I wanted to give it a chance to win me over. It pretty much did, mostly because of the bookend tracks which are stellar, the title track works well too though as a simple easy rock song. The Crazy Diamond journey is obviously proggy but not in a way I disliked for a change. This is really good 4/5 stuff.

Not quite as good as The Wall, or Dark Side of The Moon (certainly in terms of storytelling), but still very very good. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is the best bit of proper prog (i.e. long songs with lots of instrumental) that they've done (and possibly that anyone has done?), the title track is superb, and there's some really great caustic lyrics about the music industry in particular (by the way, which one's Pink?). It's an incredible soundscape with a few bits that make you really listen - DSOTM and The Wall don't really have those lulls, so that's why this only gets a 4 rather than a 5, but it's very very close.

I bought a bootleg tape of Pink Floyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder at a flea market in Myrtle Beach back in 1988. I didn't know a lot of Pink Floyd - mostly things from The Wall. But that first track, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, is pretty fucking amazing. And I gauge that mainly by two criteria- 1) I really love it and 2) it's almost 12 minutes long. This one opens with a lesser version of 'Shine' - it feels lethargic compared to the live version. That said, it's hard to deny the chops of these guys. They aren't playing in a standard songwriting sandbox and yet this is frequently engaging. Pretty good stuff.

I’ve yet to go through a Pink Floyd phase in my life and I’m guessing that at this point I never will. As such, I am not overly exposed to this album and really liked it. Definitely meanders a tad, but the middle is strong and the title track never fails to make me wish I could sing. Anybody remember when Limp Bizkit and the Goo Goo Dolls covered it for the televised concert after 9/11?? Never forget.

I had never heard this album front to back, and I found it to be incredibly experimental, even for Pink Floyd. "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" is a masterwork in synth, as is the chilling "Welcome to the Machine". "Wish You Were Here" strips things down a bit more and is almost a ballad. It's wild that these two iconic songs were never singles from this album. The songs both take on new life when heard in the context of the entire album, though. Honestly, the entire album evokes interesting vibes. It's haunting, surreal, melancholy, and strange. I'm not sure if I LOVED it, but it really intrigued me, and has stuck with me and I can't get it out of my head. To me, that's worth something.

It's pink flyod at their pinkiest floydiest. Lots of interesting ideas and songs, but stretched out too far. Brilliant, but also over indulgent.

Everyone knows who Pink Floyd is, but I never really listened to them prior to checking out this album. For some reason, the idea of their music (paradoxically ill-defined in my head) didn't appeal to me. How nice it was, then, to enjoy this collection. While I doubt I could do so directly and actively – the songs are somewhat slow-paced – the musicality is absolutely there. Great for indirect listening, I feel.

There's so much time and space on this album. Nothing is rushed. The songs and instruments are given room to breathe. It takes nine minutes before the first vocals drop. Yet you don't feel that you are left hanging around waiting for them. When they finally do arrive, "Remember when you were young?" is a great album opener. The saxophone break on Shine On achieves almost the impossible of adding some soul to Pink Floyd. Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar lag slightly. A four star album for three outstanding tracks.

pink floyd - wish you were here (1975) notes - pink floyd is another band who will have multiple spots on this list - an iconic album - the songs on here really take their time to build and make sure that they hit extra hard fav song - wish you were here - this song is up there with roundabout in the 10/10 songs category - really the only song here that i think works just as well without the context of the album lest fav - shine on you crazy diamond pt 1-5 - felt like it went on too long, not as interesting as pt 6-9 - but it works as the opener for this album, sets the tone not my favourite album from pink floyd but still very good 4/5

It's a great listen, absorbing and intriguing with real moments where the soundscape soars and carries you along with it. Occasionally there is a sense with Pink Floyd's other, let's say 'busier' albums, that the music is overshadowed by the production but with this they complement the other perfectly. There are flashes here and there of haunting solos and melancholy melodies and this helps the album's cohesion. You feel they have something to say and an idea of how to say it. I suspect this one may grow even more on me with repeated listens. Really very good.

Pink Floyd stands by themselves with nearly every album they have. Their take on experimentalism in music as well as their epic-saga style of writing and composition is a major point of their success where for others that tried this, failed to really stick the landing. The band manages to tell a complete story but keep the music interesting without the overbearing repetitiveness that experimentalists tried to do. Where "The Wall" has a prolonged theme with political commentaries, or where "Dark Side of the Moon" has a spatial element, this album tends to feel a bit more personal as each song title is a platitude to the listener. In a way, we are being sung either to or towards. The slow disco-esque "Have a Cigar" starts with a familiarizing hook and melody, and then takes a major turn into something else. The band is satirizing their success, grappling with whether or not they are the makers of their own success, or if they are just a product of The Machine. As mentioned, the album feels personal and it is good for doing so.

I used to listen to Pink Floyd a lot as an angsty teen. This is a good album.

This album really brings into conflict all of the things that I like and hate about Pink Floyd. There are some great songs on here, especially Have a Cigar and Wish You Were Here. The songs are musically creative, well-executed, and have interesting lyrics. That's what I like about Pink Floyd. Then there's the bad Pink Floyd. The one that disappears into interminable jams for half of the goddamn album. Shine on You Crazy Diamond could be a good song if it wasn't so unstructured for most of it. Pink Floyd has made several long songs that I like (like anything off of Animals), but on this album it just feels like filler. This album is great when it's good and deeply frustrating when it's not. I think overall the good outweighs the bad on this one, but it's close, and that's why I don't listen to this one often 4/5

J'ai d'ailleurs grâce à cet album pu élaborer la théorie suivante: tout groupe légendaire a une part de génie, seulement une fois cette dernière démontrée, la masse générateurienne prend cela pour acquis, et qualifie tout album du groupe en question de génial. Cette théorie a néammoins un caillou dans son soulier, puisque David Bowie n'a lui aucune once de génie.

Forced to listen to this, I really liked it more than I thought I would. Been an ardent opponent of any Pink Floyd, but really connected with that album artwork. Would listen to this again for sure. Wish you were here...

The middle of this album is so terrific, but it just takes too long to get there, and equally too long to get out of it. "Have a Cigar" and "Wish You Were Here" deserve a tighter album. Even "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" has a fantastic core, but it gets lost in the additional meandering parts that don't even come across as a long evolving jam, but rather separate pieces that start and stop, fade in and out. But when Pink Floyd is good, they're really great.

Never have given this one a full listen in one sitting. Flows really nicely as almost a continuous single song. Definitely feels like a tribute album to Syd. More of the mid 70s sounds creeping in that I don’t like as much as the earlier albums but that gets forgotten as you immerse into the songs.

"Have A Cigar" prevents me from giving this 5 stars.

Definitely creative and sounded good, but it was a little too hippie for me. You can tell they were on LSD when they made it, or made it for people on LSD.

this is the only pink floyd album i like. shiny on you crazy diamond uh, is a bit excessive at times. but wish you were here is just such a great fucking song.

Best Song: Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Doesn't matter how long it is, this track feels absolutely ethereal. Completely in outer space. Worst Song: Isn't really a worst song here. Everything flows into everything else, and it all works. Overall: This album just feels so expansive. Every note has so much space. I think part of it is the patience with which everything is delivered, but part also comes from the way its mixed, as though the band is actually far away from the microphone, floating in space, and the microphone is just drifting around them.

Was prepared to dislike it, ended up enjoying it. I liked the use of synths and thought I could hear a number of sounds that probably ended up influencing a lot of bands I like.

3/3/22 Once again I am impressed with Pink Floyd for this composition. The album as a whole is beautiful and expressive. The guitar is amazing as usual. Each song flows and even without a ton of lyrics, a story is told. I really enjoyed the album, but I was slightly less captivated by this than I was The Wall. Would give a 4.5 if I could! I loved this album when I was younger - Shine on You Crazy Diamond is one of those rare epics that actually evolves and keeps your interest. Have a Cigar is that Roger Waters bitterness that I was there for and Wish You Were Here is gorgeous. In hindsight, the album feels slight compared to the Waters and Barrett peaks, but better than any of the Gilmour era!!! Great, not perfect.

Textural and spacious. A slow build at points but the full body of the guitars, drums and vocal harmonies is a tasty combination. Surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

It was a good album and I think listen to the whole thing instead of just standalone songs really helps the enjoyment.

It’d be better if every single song on here wasn’t overplayed by every classic rock radio station everywhere.

I like Pink Floyd but my exposure has actually been very shallow. Dark Side, Meddle, The Wall and Piper in decreasing order of frequency, and I only generally listened to the first two in recent decades. Long ago I had a cheap compilation cassette that include what I learned yesterday was a criminally edited version of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and Wish You Were Here, both of which I liked a lot. This is a worthy successor of Dark Side, I think, and on a similar level.

I got pretty lucky for album #1. I'm quite familiar with this album but in all honesty I probably haven't played it in full for a couple of years now. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is still a great song. Few bands could play ten minute plus songs that actually hold my attention like Pink Floyd. The title track is a bona-fide classic rock staple for a reason. It's hard not to find yourself singing along. The only problem I have with this album is Welcome To The Machine. It's not terrible, but it's easily my least favorite on the album. I know a lot of other Floyd fans like it but it remains just "okay" in my book. Overall it's a very solid album. It's probably in my top 5 of the band, and I love me some Pink Floyd.

If I had to describe this album in one word, I'd say STUNNING. I'm not terribly well experienced in Pink Floyd or prog rock generally, but I was floored at how these songs patiently and steadily develop into such striking climaxes. It's definitely not an album of instant gratification, but if you're willing to be patient, the gradual builds of tension and anticipation are so worth it. I love the concept of the album, being largely dedicated to the band's troubled former member Syd Barrett. Shine on You Crazy diamond and Wish You Were Here are touching tributes to their friend that also happen to be the most gorgeous songs on the album. This album is so incredibly deliberate. Nothing sounds easy. Unknown sounds that don't come from any identifiable instrument mix perfectly with a wide variety of instruments, from organ to saxophone to David Gilmour's masterful guitar work. All in all, this album was a pleasure to listen to and I'll surely revisit it often. My only complaint is that due to my somewhat ADHD nature, I know there will be many times I'm too impatient to sit through the entirety of some of these tracks. 8/10 subjective enjoyment rating for me.

The build up on this album (especially in SOYCD) is absolutely insane. Feels like a I'm entering another dimension. But it's a Pink Floyd album so I couldn't have expected anything less. The abrasive sounds on this record really pull you in and define the world that this record lives in. The transitions between songs are also excellent. As far as the concept goes, I had to do a bit of research to understand it. I appreciate the album more now than before I knew it was about one of the band members. I love how the album tells a story as well as you go deeper and deeper into the record. While the album is sonically cohesive and interesting during the instrumental breakdowns, at times it does feel rudimentary especially during the vocal sections. Exceptions however are found in SOYCD and "Welcome to the Machine". I am mixed on the conclusion to this record. I really love how it finishes off where it started, but the second part of SOYCD is not as memorable as the first. I am not a fan of "Have a Cigar". This is the most repetitive song on the record for me. The sound is uninteresting to me as well. Favorite track on the album is "Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pts 1-5". The build up on this track is really the selling point. I especially love the rhythm change on the backend of this record, and this record overall sets the tone for the rest of the album.

Easy listen when you're all up in your head. Amazing album that is close to five stars, but Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall cast a great shadow.

I remembered Shine on you Crazy diamond had a long intro and was worried it might sound a little dated these days. Sort of like the long intro to Station to Station (made around the same time) kind of does sound dated. But the Shine on intro really didn’t sound dated and in fact sounds great. This is a testament to David Gilmour’s guitar playing. The first words in that tune are great with the vocal effects on the laughing at the end of the first phrase. I realize vocal effects are a lot better these days but it’s still good. I remember Dick Parry hitting it out of the park w his sax solo on Money but forgot that he also kicked it on Shine on you Crazy Diamond. Wish you Were Here is a classic. I particularly like it since it’s a great song for a hack guitar player since the opening riffs are easy to figure out and everyone will recognize them and know the song before the words start. Have a Cigar is another classic. I never realized that an outsider sang it and the story behind that. Who knew ?

Full of classic songs, but the really long Shine On you Crazy Diamond is just too much for me.

Awesome album. Love the blues inspired guitar and the themes within the songs. An album steeped in ideas and creativity.

Probably not the #2 best album of all time (according to RYM, anyway) but it's still pretty good. I've kind of avoided listening to much Pink Floyd because they kind of seem overrated, and well, I think they still might be but, it's still good music.

Vangelis vibes were the last thing I expected going into a Pink Floyd album, but here we are. I'm not sure what exactly the band is trying to say, or if they succeed, but they keep their words short and that helps a lot. The length makes it feel like a prog EP, which is perfect. The bookending with the two halves of Shine On... is particularly nice.

Solid album

Not my favorite of Pink Floyd's 70s output - though this run of Pink Floyd records we've seen gives me renewed appreciation for their creative energy with regard to their songwriting. The thematic, emotional content of these albums are universally interesting and Wish You Were Here is particularly affecting since so much of it is about Syd Barrett no longer being in the band and the delayed response/recognition of that. But what they do on Dark Side & The Wall & Animals impresses me a lot more.

Nothing bad here, but it is a bit exhausting. A soundtrack for a day which is not today, I think.

A slow start, peaking in the middle and slowing down towards the end of the last track. Was aware of one track on the album, and enjoyed majority of it. Start felt mystical before lyrics kicked in.

“Wish You Were Here” feels like one of those albums that’s really deep without trying too hard to prove it. The music is dreamy and a little melancholy, and you can definitely feel the themes of missing people, losing connection. I may not understand every layer of what Pink Floyd is trying to say, but I know this album has a mood—and somehow it gets better every time I listen to it

The opening minutes are amazing. I was absolutely loving the sort of cosmic, spacey ambience. Then the “rock” started and that’s always where Pink Floyd kind of loses me. Still on the whole a mostly enjoyable listen.

If nothing else, this project is teaching me that I don't like Prog Rock. Really believe Pink Floyd are at their best with a traditional song structure such as 'Wish You Were Here.' Which is a great song and the album cover is a classic. But the 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond' split into 2 songs for some pretentious proggy reason named Parts 1-V and parts VI-IX can fuck right off. 3 stars.

oooo i feel like im gonna get a ton of flack for this. i think that dark side is better. i know this is their kinda more commercially successful one, but i think as an album you gotta listen to it in one shot. i think that ultimately detracts from it sadly, that you can't just jump on it i guess overall, its beautiful, but i also think the mixing was so weird on wish you were here.

This album is kind of crazy for the instrumental to vocal ratio (much higher than I expected). I knew excerpts of these but not the full 12-14 minute tracks. Maybe my attention span has been ruined by radio cuts but I think I prefer them shorter. Love the effects & the classic guitar lines are definitely ear worms.

Als dummer Hörer habe ich mit dem ganzen Midtempo Rockgehabe und den ständigen Space Synths aber meine Probleme. Und das schleppende Drumspiel, das standig dum dum dedum etwas neues, heftiges ankündigt, aber stattdessen kommt nur noch mal ne Variation majestätischer Herrenrock. Lyrisch viel Empörung, aber mir fehlt die Wucht.

better than expected

The technical mastery here is just insane, the music is transfixing and cinematic. Pink Floyd is at their best when they’re getting kind of evil with it, like in Welcome to the Machine. However, I have this problem with them which is that I don’t find the ideas they speak to directly relatable or even all that interesting. There is something so British and Baby Boomer about their engagement with a resentment of conformity and desire for independence so great it nearly defines their body of work. It’s good stuff, but I feel at a distance from it.

I believe this album was my profile pic on MySpace in 8th grade. I don’t particularly care for it today? I guess it’s a step between like long bloated suites and the pop songs they started doing on The Wall. But it’s kinda caught in the middle. I mostly enjoyed crazy diamond this time around though it’s so much shorter and more structured than I’d remembered. Also really responding to the guitar solos I feel like in the past I basically thought of Pink Floyd as like clock sounds and wooshes but they’re also a rock band. Excited for all their other better albums.

'Wish You Were Here' is one of the great songs. And some parts of this are terrific. But mostly it's just a lot of drifting around on somebody else's acid trip, which isn't nearly as fun as going on your own.

I really don’t get the hype of this band. The songs are fine but why do people act like they are one of the inventors of music itself? Maybe I’m not on enough drugs during this listening experience but it’s just… not doing it for me. It’s not bad but there’s no reason for every song to be 7+ minutes

First Listen Review – Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" has a very slow build-up that reminded me of an old cop show soundtrack. It's incredibly melodic and almost puts you in a trance-like state. It's the kind of music I'd pair with a cigarette and a beer while just sitting and thinking. By the end, it gets surprisingly jazzy and takes you through a lot of emotions. "Welcome to the Machine" feels like walking into a spaceship where robot aliens are greeting you. It's haunting, but also inviting as if you're stepping into something completely new and exciting. It's not something I'd listen to every day, but it's definitely the kind of song that scratches my brain in a way I really enjoy. I immediately liked "Have a Cigar." It has a funky, soulful intro with a great groove that makes you want to dance. The lyrics almost sound like the singer is rapping at times. I'm still a little on the fence about the song overall, but I really enjoy the instrumentation. The repeated "gravy train" lyric is a little annoying to me right now, not gonna lie, but maybe that'll grow on me. This is only my first listen. I love the acoustic guitar on "Wish You Were Here." It feels warm, comforting, and intimate. It almost has the feeling of a campfire "Kumbaya" song...simple in the best way, something you could easily sing along with. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," there are moments that sound almost Western, like the music for a tense standoff, while other sections feel completely cosmic and spacey. I especially loved the synthesizers throughout the album. Overall, this album feels like a series of journeys. Every track transports you somewhere different, whether it's a lonely highway, deep space, or a quiet moment of reflection. I could definitely see myself listening to it again on a long road trip or while working.

I hate to do this as I really wanted to enjoy this album a bit more but it just wasn't for me. I resonate and love their other projects but I couldn't feel the same way for this unfortunately. One thing I will say though is that the quality is music quality is as fantastic as always.

I already gave Dark Side 5 stars a couple of weeks ago, I can't turn around and do it again for this one. I just have trouble resonating with an album with 5 songs and barely any lyrics, but that's not to say it's bad.

I really enjoyed the first song, long but special all the way through. then throughout the album I started losing interest because i heard almost a country influence or tone to it in some parts which doesn't appeal to me personally.

i think i need to want to like this in order to buy into it. I'm hesitant because this is pretentious and indulgent boomer music. However, it could be a work of genius. The guitar sound is incredible, the confidence to let tracks breathe and become their fullest versions of themselves is welcome and the tracks are very good. maybe when this project is done, i'll spend a few weeks with their discography and some good headphones.

I always had trouble getting into Pink Floyd. I should like it. It's prog, melodic guitar solos and concept albums. I think there is something about the vocals I can't quite place. But it irks me. Prefer this album over Moon/Wall tho.

I didn't hate it but it doesn't stand out to me. I even gave it a few listens to try and understand the hype (top 10 rated albums on this site, really??) but I just can't really imagine myself putting it on for anything other then background music at work. Good instrumentals, but the tracks are way too long for me. Maybe I needed to have grown up in this era to understand it. Never really “got” Pink Floyd, and a few spins of this didn’t clarify much. It’s solid, well-performed, well-recorded 70s rock. Nothing more, nothing less.

Quite beautiful, awfully short. Reminds me of my father. I think I would appreciate this more if I was a boy in his mid-20s, just like how old my father was when this album came out. How I wish I could tailor my body to fit into the target audience for each of these albums.

Not my favorite Floyd, though it does have a few bangers for sure. Pretty subtle album.

The first song of the album "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" just reminds of a a story about an adventure into a vast unknown world. As I listen to it, it begins to develop more in a way I feel like I can't accurately describe. However there are for sure more layers to the music being added it progresses further towards the end. I feel as though the intent of this first is to tell a story primarily through the music itself instead of through lyricism which I find cool. Listening to the other songs I had to other stuff and put my phone down. Originally I planned to listen to intent with these 1001 albums. I found that I was able to appreciate the sound of this album a bit more when I wasn't so focused on listening well and instead just vibing with the sounds it was offering me. Sometimes you don't have to think to enjoy something you can just enjoy it for what it is. Overall I think its alright and for what it was considering the time this album came out this was most likely a lot of people's introduction to this type of sound. For me it's a 3 if I was old as hell a 4

Such a hard album to rate. I have no history or attachment to Pink Floyd, but somehow I "know" this is supposed to be - not only great - but an entire experience. Still, other than Wish you were here, which as a song get easy 5 stars, I had trouble connecting to the album. Will listen again.

Oh god, I struggle with Pink Floyd. So many people seem to love them, but it all sounds so flabby and trad to me. Parts of this were interesting (mostly the opening 5 and closing 5 minutes), but the rest was all standard-issue gruff blues-rock. Sorry Floyd fans, I just don’t get it.

I was a massive Floyd fan as a younger dude. They still hold up from time to time, but it doesn't hit like it used to.

I would imagine this was a very progressive sound for the time so I can appreciate why Pink Floyd became so popular. Not a huge fan of the fact that it's a 45 min album only broken up into 5 songs. However, I imagine it went craaazy listening to these tracks around their initial release in a softly-lit club in which the stale cigarette smoke lingers around the bulbs. Unfortunately the vibes I experienced this album with were much worse (my bedroom on a random weekday afternoon). Overall i would probably give it a 3(.2? idk how precise i want to go yet) out of 5.

core memory of seeing this tape in my dad's collection. next to his stereo setup in the living room that lived in the enormous media cabinet. Overall Wish you were here is the highlight, the rest of the album is less memorable. But Shine on you Crazy diamond is fun and expansive

Lots of great stuff here, I can see why it's such a well loved album. Love the thick guitar/bass stacking on Wish You Were Here. But since I'm rating these based purely on my enjoyment, it gets a 3.5 for the whole thing being very downtempo, and as one review I read said, "it's like they knew we'd be trippin'". So me not trippin' is not the target audience here. I imagine I'll like this more as I get to know it better.

Shine on you crazy diamond: I didn’t expect to liked it so much but I really loved the beat, rhythm and the variety of instruments, my only complaint is how long the song is and how little lyrics it has. 2. Welcome to the machine: did not like it at all, I mean it wasn’t awful but the beat was to much, kind of made me feel anxious. 3. Have a Cigar: kind of a love/hate relationship with this one, the rhythm was a vibe but I hated the way they sang the lyrics. 4. Wish you were here: not really enjoyed the beginning but after my initial hatred I actually enjoyed it, it reminded of the type of songs my dad listens to, overall just a chill/cool song 5. Shine on you crazy diamond (6-9): the windy noise from the beginning was super dreadful, after that the song was a complete vibe, loved the way the variety of instruments sounded together, there was a part in the beginning that felt similar to parts (1-5) but with an edge so absolutely lived that, only complaints would be a part were it felt like someone was high pitched screaming in my ear, the longevity of the song and that overall it sound similar to (1-5) but I guess it makes sense since it’s technically the same song. Loved it as the last song on the album. Overall review of album: 7.8/10 As someone who listens to the same 5 song on repeat I didn’t expect to like it at all but it truly surprised me, I don’t think it would be the type of album I would listen to all the time but I mean I’m also basic. Extras, I really loved how the album started and ended, it felt nice how the beat started to vanish at the end.

While I wouldn't put it past my more strident younger self to have hostility toward Pink Floyd, my memory is that I was more indifferent than anything else. Their looooong, proggy songs could sound like they were playing at the wrong speed on a turntable. Wish You Were Here still has elements of that, but I have generally positive feelings toward Pink Floyd these days. I'm not a fan and likely won't return to this, but I appreciate them and their artistry. 3.5 stars.
