Reviews (page 4 of 13)

I love The Zombies! Some people have compared them as a "lesser version of The Beatles" but I refuse to see them the same way; an alternative in the same scene. Song's I enjoyed from this were "Care of Cell 44", "Rose for Emily", "Beechwood Park", "Changes", "Friends of Mine" and "Time of the Season"; Time being a favourite track of mine for years. Despite earlier praise, I will readily admit that their music lacks more of the variation and lyrical hooks that are often present in The Beatles music. With that said, I still enjoyed my time with this album and would happily listen again in future; music of this time achieves exactly what it wants to in 3-4 minutes per track. A perfect amount of time for most songs.

A little too sugary flower-power in places, but still a rich and varied album with great melodies.

What a nice album for today. When Care of Cell 44 hits the chorus and goes from simple harmonies to the bombastic "feel so good" part it really catches you. A Rose for Emily is nice and has a warmth to it. This album is hitting me at the right time in this list. Time of the Season is such a good and balanced song for the time. Good album. Relevant to the time and sounds great. Keep it on the list.

Just a great vibe all around. Cohesive sound. Care of Cell 44 is so jaunty. For me it's This Will Be Our Year. Time of the Season is iconic of course.

Sounds like any other 60s animal named band but that sound is very good and is very good here Care of cell 44 has vocals very reminiscent of rod stewart 4/5 Whole album is really good so it’s hard to pick favorites Favorites: time of the season, maybe after he’s gone, hung up on a dream

Banger, great songs all the way

into it, cool vocal delivery

funky. Liked this more than I thought I would.

Classic psych rock album. Good stuff.

Me ha gustado en general y Time of the Season es rolón increíble

caught me by surprise.

Easy 4 stars. No bad songs. One big hit.

It's that time of the season

Really very beautiful. Some awesome song craft, surprisingly good 60s production sounds, some really interesting ideas. I'm not always totally into the psychedelic stuff but it mostly feels like it works well here. Some queen moments!

8.5/10

very beatles vibe! i like it.

One of those albums I always meant to take time to listen to because plenty of musicians reference it. It's great and fits perfectly with my belated love of 67/68 English psychedelia. It is a clever synthesis of Sgt Pepper and Pet Sounds to create their own thing.

Banging album

fav songs: care for cell 44 a rose for emily beechwood park i want her she wants me friends of mine time of the season warm, melodic, nostalgic 70/100

great 60s rock vibes like the kinks or beach boys, love this stuff

I'd heard of The Zombies before and knew that I'd heard one of their songs before, but couldn't remember what the song was called off the top of my head. I also knew that their band name doesn't really match with the type of music that they made, so I figured that I would at least like this, but I ended up loving it. However, I enjoyed some songs more than others.

Beechwood Park & Time of the Season are all time favourites for me bringing this up to 4 stars. Colin Blundstone has a beautiful voice but this is not an album I would listen to often.

At first this album felt like The Beatles, but not as good... By the end, I developed more of an appreciation of the song-writing. The arrangements are pretty interesting, going beyond standard pop of the time period and the singing style is pretty unique, with more of a spoken word feel than your typical pop singer.

I really enjoyed listening to this album. I nearly gave it 5 stars, but some of the tracks were weaker among really good songs. This is an album that had already been on my radar, but I hadn't taken the time to give a full listen yet. Will be buying on vinyl soon. Favorite Track - Time of The Season Least Favorite Track - A Rose For Emily ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Canción favorita "This Will Be Our Year"

Me encantó absolutamente.

Nothing more rock and roll than breaking up before releasing one of the all time great albums.

Electric Prunes but a bit better.

Excellent harmonies and lush story telling. The influence of the Beatles is evident in the horns sections of certain tracks of the album recorded in Abbey Road studios. The final track “Time of the Season” is the quintessential psychedelic groove. An album worthy of its place on this list.

Reminds me on The Beatles or the Kinks, and has always a melancholic vibe with it, which I dig. A shame they were not successful enough to go on. Fav: Time of the Season

Enjoyable

There was only one song that i did not like. The rest i found really nice and calming....vintage style

I'd never listened to this before, having only heard Time Of The Season. I loved it, will definitely listen again

Lovely album, which was new to me

Enjoyed this a lot - didn't know anything about the band before listening, but the harmonies were gorgeous and the whole vibe was very enjoyable for a spring day.

Solid album, didn't feel the urge to skip any songs Sound reminded me of Beatles, beach boys, syd barrett

Tosi hieno levy! Time of the Season olisi toki melkein yksistään kuuden tähden arvoinen styge.

This is the first band from this list that I've seen members of live. Catchy tunes. Extra star for 'Time of the Season'.

Has some interesting tunes. Nice atmosphere.

Top Songs: Care of Cell 44 This Will Be Our Year Time of the Season

I really love the piano, orchestral, and backing vocals on these tracks. I also think the lead vocalist being british adds an interesting texture to it. But i’m mostly drawn to the backing vocals. My favorite track is Time of the Season which I knew beforehand. I like the rhythm on that one. 4/5

Time of the Season is definitely one of the best songs of the 60s. Maybe all time. It's fantastic.

Listening Notes They broke up after this one! One of those what-if groups Standout Tracks "Care of Cell 44", "A Rose for Emily", "Maybe After He's Gone", "I Want Her, She Wants Me", "This Will Be Our Year", "Time of the Season" First time? No Will it go into your rotation? Just a good fucking record

Solid. Really enjoyed Changes, and of course the singles/tracks people know are already classics. I liked the range of sounds The Zombies brought into this album.

cutieew!! very soft and dark at the same time

Zanger klinkt af en toe als Sting

Awesome early rock. Timeless, catchy, classic.

Just missing Eminem

How have I not listened to this album before now? Such a great album to listen to on a Monday morning. I first heard "This Will Be Our Year" when OK GO recorded it, and I didn't know it was a cover. Ending the album with "Time of the Season" is a great end. Listened in the original mono. I played the album 4 times in one day.

moy bueno

Fun record from a great pop band

Didn't zone out. Songs are interesting. A rose for Emily was freaking depressing.

Time of the Season was sampled by Black Hippy and it was cool for that to pop up and hear a familiar sound in a different way.... the original way I should say. The rest of the album was pretty good and I enjoyed listening to it

Did not know I liked the zombies as much as I do

I wanna know what they were feeding these British guys in the 60s this is a fantastic if not, one of the better psychedelic rock albums

Like most of us, I only knew the big song from this album, but was keen to hear more. None of the songs here are as good as that one, but a few come close and none are bad. It's a solid slice of 60s Rock. I'm not on board with the spelling of 'Odessey', but that's a minor complaint. It's a three star album, but I'm feeling positive today, so four it is.

Nice, was waiting for this one. A little bit underwhelming, however still strong 4 stars for sure. I should probably revisit this more often, was only aware of Time of the Season, but opening track is really good as well. I love album art

I absolutely loved this one!!! Psych rock is one of my favourite genres and this album didn't disappoint. I was grooving to it from start to finish, definitely one I'm going to pick up on vinyl.

In part, the music reminded me of the early songs by Genesis, and in part of a German band that I don't like. I was ambivalent about whether I wanted to listen to the whole album. It was interesting, but also boring at times. Then I pricked up my ears when I heard "Time of the Season." I'd known the song for a long time and always liked it. I didn't realize it was by The Zombies. I think I need to listen to the album again. 4/5

I take it back this is even more Beatles than skylarking. Enjoyed it more too so maybe there’s some correlation there

There’s some absolute belters on here, and the harpsichord goes hard

A fun poppy psychedelic album

This was a good album! I never expected to like this genre, but it there was a fun energy surrounding it. A pleasant surprise.

Some songs really stuck otherwise oldie goldie

Hippie goodness!

This was great!

Gee, they really dragged my ass with A Rose for Emily, on Valentine’s Day no less. Apart from that, I really liked this album! Could’ve blown me over with a feather when I got to Time of the Season - a song I’ve looooved for a long time but just never knew who sang it. Turns out I’ve been a fan of The Zombies without even knowing it (as evidenced by She’s Not There coming on shortly thereafter). I love the little bit of psychedelia that permeates this album and the swelling orchestrals/harmonies are very up my alley. I’ll be coming back to this one for sure.

A very solid album that sounds better to my ears than others of the same era. Just enough depth and dreaminess to keep it interesting.

High 4 off the bat. Some serious quality

Unbelievably timeless

Que tranquilidad

Call it 3.5 rounded up

Album No. 0143 on my list. I think I had known The Zombies before listening to this, but only in terms of their name. And even that may be incorrect, because "Zombie" is just a generic and common term. Anyway "Odessey and Oracle" was something completely new to me, and I had low expectations to be frank, because I thought it would just be another hippie-esque generic album from 1968. But I'm very glad to say I was wrong! This is a pretty solid album indeed - good pop-rock tunes, fun psycheldic hippie vibes. Reminded me a lot of the Beatles actually - similar to Sgt. Pepper, but more straigthforward and catchy and less experimental. Or similar to Abbey Road maybe (but slightly less good). I will add "Care Of Cell 44", "This Will Be Our Year", and "Time Of The Season" to my playlist. Good, catchy stuff, interesting band history, some good late 60s bangers - I enjoyed it! 4/5 stars!

Meget retro på den originale måde.

One of the best 60s psych rock albums of all time. 4⭐️

A great 60s album because it represents the era very well without sounding dated at all. Care of Cell 44 is just a pure dopamine rush and has some of the best chord progressions of that era, very ahead of its time. A Rose for Emily is a bit less exciting but the highlights keep coming after that. The next couple songs are more about the atmosphere and production, but still dash out some incredible writing. I especially like Brief Candles and Hung Up on a Dream which create pure bliss with these amazing guitar passages. It's of course impossible to talk about this album without mentioning the amazing closer with its amazing bassline and truly addictive melodies. It's a great and very consistent album that has grown on me over the years.

I really enjoyed this album. Although some of the songs are seemingly “filler” songs there are quite a few great tunes on this record.

Oooh, I like this! I'm not sure why I always expected these chaps to be heavier in sound, but they're lighter and I like that I was pleasantly surprised. Melodic loveliness.

Very Beach Boys at times, very Beatles at times. What makes this unique is the use of keyboard arrangements which forms the definition of baroque pop. There's a lot of great songs such as Care Of Cell 44, Beechwood Park, Hung Up On A Dream and Time Of The Season. This all forms a good not great album. I can say that it's grown on me ever since I first came across it years ago. It's in that status where it's a good time, but nothing incredible at least for me. Lowkey impressive (8/10, 4/5 on this scale).

Great album that fits pretty much exactly into the time period that it was released. I was very surprised to find out that this album didn't do well commercially when it released. The story of the fake Zombies touring America when it got popular is hilarious.

Its a nice listen

woooow so many classic bands out there that I had no idea of! Liked it very much.

Margot Tenenbaum type shit

prolly crazy when it came out

I quite enjoyed this and at just 34 mins I’m rounding up to a 4.

really good background noise, it's chill but still a bit upbeat, i like it!

Those are some THICK vocal arrangements. Very fun album, never really got boring for me. I've heard Time of the Season at least 100 times and never thought about it as a piece of music. Pretty cool stuff.

Never heard the album before. Actually, stands up quite well today.

Relatively modern sounding, kinda nice.

Love this album. It doesn’t have any hits that I knew of going in but this album feels underrated. I love the psychedelic, ambient music and up beat catchy, story weaving lyrics.

super guay paraguay

The Zombies! Yeah! When you are a Beatles devotee, like I’m sure many of us are, it can be a relief to encounter other British Invasion bands, like picking up a novel after studying scripture. You see other possibilities, even if some of them seem incomplete. In this album you’ve got the psychedelia and the organ and the haunting harmonies — all stuff I expected from what I already knew. But there’s also a songwriting style that’s surprisingly contemporary on the tracks I hadn’t heard before. There were times when I thought I was hearing a group that grew up listening to Belle and Sebastian playing in a throwback style. Exactly what I wanted but also different from what I expected. Also I’ve been listening to “Time of the Season” my whole life and I still can’t decide if it’s more sexy or spooky, and I’m just fine with that.

decent. I enjoyed some of the tunes on this, especially 'Brief Candles'... What unbelievable lyricisim! 7.5/10

Definitely like this more than I expected to! I'd heard "Time of the Season" before, but knew it was different than much of what The Zombies did. Had had the opp to hear a couple of their other songs somewhere before and wasn't impressed. First listen had me thinking that it's typical of the time, maybe a little smoother than some, but nothing super grabby. Upon second listen, I heard a little more depth. These are pretty good musicians. Singer is fine and the songs are pretty well constructed. While I don't love the chamber pop, mellow psychedelia aspects, this is altogether listenable. Weakest would be "Changes" and "Butcher's Tale" (Sing, don't talk!) Obvs, the best is the single. The production on this whole things is quite immaculate. "This Will Be Our Year" sounds like it was recorded this year. Don't know if I'll come back to listen to the whole thing again, but I do think it stands as a good example of it's day. I'm going with a 4 today!

Super crisp british 60s rock from Abbey Road. The lyrics aren't exactly memorable but the harmonies are truly amazing. And don't get me started on Time Of The Season. The music part does feel lackluster at times, this might be the only criticism I have.

Maybe after he’s gone , brief candles would listen to Nearly favourite album so far, preferred Otis blue vocally, this has less covers and is more appealing to me musically Butchers tale sounds a bit wank though

Very good, some insane bangers. Gives very beatles music and i can see some of these songs being on the guardians of the galaxy.

I am a bit tired of the numerous late 60's one album one hit psychedelic wonders on this list - but actually I was surprised to discover how much I enjoyed this album. Some great tunes with nice pop hooks - dare I say it better than than Kinks album we had recently. A nice short running time also.

This was lovely! Feels the platonic ideal of the psychedelic pop/rock sound from this era. Flows by like a breeze!

I love this record. Some brilliant songwriting, beautiful 60s psychedelia that feels akin to the Beatles but living in its own world. Harmonies are gorgeous.

good! didnt listen super hard to have specific favorites but i know i already like them so 😝 4.3 stars 8/10

Few belters. Can see why their names continues through time. What are we now? 60 yrs on? [2026]

Both of their albums from the 60s are absolute bangers. Truly seminal psychedelic rock that inspired a ridiculous number of bands. There is a reason that they were admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the strength of only 2 albums and a breakup before the 70s even began. When people say some bands are underrated and underpaid, this is definitely one of those bands. "She's Not There" (from their first album BEGIN HERE) and "Time of the Season" from this one have stood the test of time.

Really interesting beats

4.0 stars This one grew on me. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood, or whatever. You wouldn't think such a poppy sounding record (at least on the surface) would be a grower, but here we are. There are certain records you listen to and you just know they were massively influential on the artists that followed them. Favorite song: This Will Be Our Year

Classic 60s album, good classics and a bunch of excellent sleeper songs, Picture of Emily is a highlight

How did this group not get a third album? Better singers than the Beatles, lovely piano and organ and a banger like 'Time of the Season'. Why would critics of the time not like this? Madness. Felt somewhere between Beach Boys and Beatles and I was pretty well engrossed.

Spotify 40th anniversary release has previously unused horns and other bullshit that detracts from the original release.

not very varied

will listen again

I've got this album in my collection, and I don't listen to it enough.

time of the season is the main attraction but there are some serious bangers across this bad boy

It gave me very much beach boys vibes with all the Bryan Wilson type harmonies stacked. Great album for a fall weather

Very good album. Love the old school classic rock

4.25/5 Stars Top Songs: Changes, Beechwood Park, Time of the Season

Psychedelic pop funk for the late 60s vibes.

very good

Yes! I don't think that this album is perfect but never hearing any of the songs before my first listen I have to say this is one of my favorite albums of all time so beautiful.

Cell 44 is gas

Care of Cell 44 3.4 A Rose for Emily 3.4 Maybe After He's Gone 3.6 Beechwood Park 3.8 Brief Candles 3.7 Hung Up on a Dream 3.5 Changes 3.6 I Want Her, She Wants Me 3.4 This Will Be Our Year 3.4 Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914) 3.2 Friends of Mine 3.3 Time of the Season 4.3 Score: 3.55

Time of the season is such a classic

Very cool music. I know only their hit at the end of this album.

Pleasant listening, mainly upbeat vibes. Not enough highlights for full marks, but a well deserved 4/5

Fantastic album. I only know two Zombies songs and they’re great, so I was happy to dive into this one.

Very enjoyable, and This Will Be Our Year is great.

A great listen, fun lyrics. Fav: a Rose for Emily, Time of the season

What a terrific sounding recording. Care of Cell 44 could have been a Britpop chart topper if I didn't already know this album was 25 years before then. There's some Beach Boys-esque harmony (Maybe After He's Gone), Little bit of Psychedelia on Beechwood Park, but the best truly is last. cool, suave and timeless - Time of the season. very good listen and why I come back to be honest

I recognized most of the songs, but never knew the band name. This was a fun listen. Tunes fun and catchy, similar in sound to the beatles, but with interesting, less poppy lyrics that make me feel like these guys were more accessible to alt types. Cool record. I went and listened to their first album after this. And then checked out Rod Argent. Quite a few original classics came from this band and other bands that spawned here.

Listening, I can understand how groundbreaking this would have been. Not something to repeat regularly, but I did enjoy!

Loved it!!! Beatles, late 60’s vibes. Would listen again!

Fun happy upbeat

Its kinda ok, but its all just preamble to Time of the Season. 3.6/5

Great album that I'd never heard of. Each song sounds great and aged really well. Not a tedious album to listen to, but can feel a little draggy, like some other Psychedelic albums. Still worth a listen and possible a few re-listens.

Älskar omslaget. Det blir inte mer 60-talsgroove än så! Gillar soundet verkligen. Sista låten Time of The Season åkte in på en av mina spellistor också. Det höjer helhetsbetyget för min del.

The late 60s was an incredible time for music. I’d never heard this album and it was great. Kind of like the Beatles crossed with Jefferson Airplane/Yardbirds? I love the psychedelic sound with the pipe organs and univibes.

4/5 - cool album with an interesting sound, very Beatles-y

The Cranberries (Ive been doosed). Fick istället njuta i 34 min. Går rakt in i hjulhuset!

Very nice album, great vocals and nice instrumentals with a nice variety of instruments and sounds. I’m not usually one for lyrics but there were some very nice vocals and found Butchers Tale to be a very powerful song.

Solid album - nice tracks.

This album, for me, really captures the late sixties quite well. I was surprised to read that this was recorded in a huge rush while the band was on its last legs. For the most part, it sounds well-produced and put together. It’s a great album, there’s really only one song on here that I would say is subpar (Changes). As for the rest, I am actually baffled that these guys broke up due to financial difficulties before the album came out. Even reading the Wikipedia page seems to riff on how close these guys were to making it big. This was recorded in the same room right after Pink Floyd in Piper and the four track machine was later used by the Beatles. The last song on this album (the best one) was such a hit, that other musicians went around pretending to be the Zombies to bank on the success of the song. Two of the musicians who did that went on to form ZZ Top. Wild. The irony of a single making it big after a band called the Zombies is not lost on me. Highlights: Beechwood Park, Hung Up on a Dream, Time of the Season

What’s not to like? Fun psychedelic pop. This Will Be Our Year is a favorite of mine.

nostalgic, tasteful, incredible

Solid overall with one great song. Could have been a bigger band if they'd stuck together I think. Lots of creativity.

It was really 60s

Time of the season last song best song whose your daddy is he rich rich like me?

Listen to the live 40th anniversary version!

I really enjoyed this more than I expected - it was a fun listen. I think my wife put it best when she said “yeah it’s fun - but they aren’t as good as any of the bands they are trying to sound like.” A lot of reviews here are a bit over the top. This is NOT Pet Sounds or Let It Bleed or anything by the Beatles. But it is fun, committed psychedelic pop rock. I’d give it a 3.5 if I could but I’m in a good mood so I’ll go 4.

A big album from a classic rock powerhouse. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it- the songs are varied in tone and backed by strong instrumentals. I found myself grooving out a lot as I listened.

Really enjoyed this album and is very much what I think of when I think of the boy bands of the Beatles era. Good casual listening. I'd have it on in the background with guests over.

the kinks if they were awesome

It's some good 60s rock, and very atmospheric.

Excellent stuff. The Beach Boys meet the Beatles. You can’t go wrong with that.

Solid classic album. Fun fact, engineered by Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick. The sound is overall great

Time Of the season is an amazing psychedelic rock song.

3.5 stars if i could

Oddly appropriate random pick for Halloween, and also just a good album in general

Usually when I call something a knock off Beatles it's derogatory but here I kinda mean it as a compliment! 7/10

Liked it

Good 60s pop

I really enjoyed this album. At first I thought maybe they were trying to emulate and capitalize off a Beatles or Beach Boys sound but I realized pretty quickly they have a sound all their own. I really liked the use of vocal layering and harmonizing. They do the 60's psychedelic pop sound super well and without any cliche. I also thought for a pop band the lyrics were surprisingly deep and introspective but also not entirely abstract like some psychedelic bands of the era might lean into. Also bonus points for "Time of the Season" being one of the all time great jams.

No way. I was literally just talking to my girlfriend about how "Time of the Season" is the most soulful song ever produced by white people lol. Another one of those albums that gets better each time you listen to it. And yea, "Time of the Season" is one of the greatest songs of all time obviously. Favorite track: Time of the Season 4.5/5

Pretty cool, but some songs are a little repetitive. low 4/5

This was light but fun, four stars.

great songs

3.5 actually but yeah.

Limpo, agradável, muito bom. Inesperadamente, amei.

A collection of some of the best of 60s rock-- folk, harpsichord, all manner of harmonies. And it ends on their darkest sounding song with organ, kind of Doors-ish. Just a great album. 4/5

Got some like beach boys and early pink Floyd vibes from this, pretty cool, enjoyed it quite a bit. 4 stars

Enjoyed this much more than I expected and more than I felt I should. Somewhere between a weak 4 and a strong 3.

Entertainende sixtiespop, harmonietjes a la Beach Boys met semivergeten hitjes ‘a rose for Emily’, ‘this will be our year’ en ´The Time of the Season’

Ended up listening a few times, really grew on me.

If the beach boys were British and psychedelic. This is glowing warm with youth and life, has this vintage quality and medieval references that work. Soundtrack to youth, autumnal quality

Solid through and through.

Not my style but some great songs.

Good stuff. "This Will Be Our Year"

An under looked albums I’ve always thought

Thy Bombies.

Better than expected, especially the last couple. Butcher’s Tale was the right combo of weird and catchy for me. This felt a step above a lot of the 60s stuff we’ve gotten. Light 4.

This was a fun one to hear again. Like the Beatles and Kinks the Zombies are able to combine psychedelia with early 20th century British dancehall music seamlessly. "Time of the Season" is a classic that still sounds cool today. Also a great album cover.

One of my favourite bands from this era. Couple of outstanding tracks a a great listen overall

Really grew on me, thought it was 2 bound after the first two songs and when I stopped comparing it to the Beatles. Might be generous but really enjoyed by the end

Had never heard the Zombies before. Definitely gave me some Beatles binders. Nice melodies. Could use a few more uptempo tracks sprinkled in.

W its a dope album, and the lyrics really got me thinking what more can I ask for

?? ah doch "times of the season" toll. c

Good 60s vibe with Age of Aquarius too.

Very ‘60s/‘70s psychedelia in a rejuvenating kind of way. Enjoyed this one much more than I expect I would, too!

Huh! I, of course, have heard a few of these songs never knowing the band The Zombies, however I now see that they are not a one hit wonder band at all, and worthy of a listen. In fact the only real thing I will say here is they fall under a sort of 60's pop psychedelic genre with clear, somewhat meaningful lyrics and are truly WORTH A LISTEN! Made me happy!

The first album on this list where I let it play a second time through straight. I knew Time of the Season but couldn’t have told you who sang it before today. Really enjoyed the album 8/10

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. This list’s psychedelic recommendations have mostly left me feeling frustrated and disoriented. But the Zombies have an immediately arresting sound. I was engaged all the way through to the clear highlight Time of the Season. Solid 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gammal hederlig musik! Inga konstigheter, bara bra melodier och vibe.

Fav Song: Time of the Season

Not not Beatles

Strong 3,5

This was so pretty. Dreamy harmonies and just the right touch of sadness. It’s melodic the whole way through, never boring, and a couple tracks really stuck with me. Loved this one. The most liked review was also awesome to read.

Good, varied stuff. Btw OK Go recorded an excellent (albeit not especially innovative) cover of This Will Be Our Year.

3.5/5 - You need to hear this because it has a couple solid hits, and so you know the music behind the insane back story of the "Fake Zombies." Go look it up on Wikipedia. The album cover and misspelling of Odessey are pretty classic as well. I'd probably have to spend more time with this to really get into the album cuts, but I like it overall. Rounding up to 4 for the Fake Zombies story.

Favourite Track: beechwood park, time of the season

A better Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

Less high profile than Beach Boys but a very similar sound. Very catchy in places

Hung up on a Dream is perfect. Dang I really like this album.

banger

Really enjoyed this. Brief candles especially.

This was a really good and fun album. I've only ever heard the last track.

Really enjoyed most of this

Great melodies and performances. Very good players and the production is perfect. It sounds like when it was recorded but in the way that you want - like a document not something that got stranded there. Nothing typical about it but you also feel like it is familiar.

Fun, a little whiny, but I think that's kind of the genre. Easy listening

kan vokse på en

One of my favorite of the era.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this one but it was a pleasant surprise. A decent listen.

Damn, the beatles really overshadowed other bands in the 60s.Honestly prefer some of this psych to em.Also,GOKU?? 8.7

Great album, first time listening in a couple years and its more of a banger than I remembered

What a wild story this band has, good album

A lovely album—reminds me of The Beatles, mixed with a little bit of Chicago! I wasn’t familiar with the Zombies’s discography but I really enjoyed this album’s songs! Great harmonies and mixing!!

I enjoyed the sound of this. Sort of early Beatles meets Beach Boys with a touch of psychedelica and Dusty Springfield. I particularly liked the last track, “Time of the Season” which I seem to have “liked” on Spotify previously. It sounds like the sort of thing that might be on movie soundtracks. Other than that one, I don’t think there’s a lot of catchy tunes. But I might return to it.

Classic from its time, really enjoyed.

Tis a bop

"released to critical and commercial indifference" - Yeah, I can see that. This is what "twee" and "quaint" were invented for. I do notice how this can be experienced as a noteworthy shuffle of 60s sounds, ... [...] ... but later, revisting it right now, I am thinking about highlighting the Britishness of it, maybe mention an LSD infused cup of tea as a likely good companion to the album, back then, in a Bridport/Dorsey cottage... which has me thinking... I don't love this, but it's got a thing going for it. "This Will Be Our Year" is playing right now, I would be lying if this wasn't a 4.

Really enjoyed this. It felt like a combination of what I enjoyed of the Beatles and the Beach Boys.

groovy with good melodies, heavy two channel action

Enjoyed this album. Very good sound and production, some lovely songs, Beatles-esque vibes

Mixing sounds quite modern for 1968 Very good mood

Way more fun and engaging than I originally expected. Listened twice. Care of cell 44, rose for Emily, this will be our year, dreaming of you, and butchers tale, were personal favs among others.

cool, but something is missing for a 4th star. nice psych rock. ok i changed my mind, i dont know whats missing for the 4th one

Maybe After He’s Gone // Brief Candles // I Want Her She Wants Me // Butcher’s Tale // Time of the Season 3.5/5

What a little gem. Owes a heavy debt to Pet Sounds and all the other usual suspects, but it's pretty distinctive melodically, with some poignant lyrics, some brilliant vocal harmonies and arrangements, and some groovy rhythms. It has an autumnal, melancholy vibe. May have sounded a bit dated by mid-1968 when it came out, which might account for its relative obscurity. Nevertheless it's a great album.

A cute album and I love the fake zombies story I read here in the comments

Quintessential 60s. Baroque Pop. Funny origin story. Can't go wrong.

Nice fun music, but not really what I'm digging at the minute. I can see why it's on the list though.

Not really a big fan of the genre

I enjoyed it, very 60s

I knew "Time of the Season" like probably everyone does, even if they don't know who sings it. Didn't realize the entire album was that same level. Really solid.

very funky and fun, probably not something that I would listen to regularly

i heart this album

I enjoyed this. A couple of tracks were very evocative of good times. Lyrics on some tracks were very Ray Davies meets Syd Barrett. Liked it a lot.

Catchy hooks, jangly guitars, lovely vocals and harmonies, poetic lyrics. What's not to like. Couple of overly cheesy parts in my opinion preventing the full 5.

Extremely pleasant listen. Total Beatles vibes, but still unique and lovely. Maybe not the most standout album, but this was really wonderful to listen to. Fave songs: The whole album, perhaps maybe not "Butcher's Tale"

QoA Vesper.

Psychedelic rock tends to blend together for me, but this is a standout. The harmonies were reminiscent of The Beach Boys, but less cheesy. I’ve only heard Time of the Season prior to this, but I’d definitely listen to this again! Also the lore to this one is crazy

Care of Cell 44 and Time Of The Season are huge hits that deserve their incessant radio presence. The rest of the album is entertaining, but doesnt reach those heights. Love the instrumentation- lots of piano, great harmonies, Blunstons vocals are solid Also wasn't surprised to read that this was recorded at Abbey Road. The weird flute was definitely calling on some Beatles stuff. Some of the songs even resemble Beatles hits - A Rose For Emily sounds just like For No One off of Revolver. Crazy to read how bootstrapped this project was and how they disbanded after. The talent and sound is so clear to me? Ill definitely be returning to this again to get the middle of this album another run

Really dig it, probably a 3.5, but not a common ‘go to’ genre so giving it a 3 for now. Needs more relistens.

Nice one, very psychadelic, 4

I quite liked this, and that story in the top review is crazy and hilarious. Might give this another listen, but for now it is a solid 4 stars.

Not bad for psychedelic stuff - fun to listen to

Nice one, very psychadelic, 4

8.5/10 Wow, huge surprise and I’m surprised this isn’t more well known. Psychedelic, baroque pop rock from the top drawer. Very much its own thing, but clearly influenced by Pet Sounds. Very British sensibility. The keyboards and organs in particular are excellent. Best: Care of Cell 44

Four stars for Time of the Season and Care of Cell 44

Really enjoyed this one. Of course "Time of the Season" is a pure classic.

This album feels more modern than 60s/70s. The album, and especially the "I Want Her She Wants Me" song makes me think of Belle and Sebastian.

Honestly kind of a banger album

This album puts a smile on my face every time I listen to it. Some fun and explorative psychedelic pop that obviously influenced a lot of my favorite artists since. Artists like The Shins, Ben Folds and Animal Collective come to mind while I listen to this classic.

I those these folks would sound like The Cranberries for some reason...This has a very Beach Boys vibe. I'm not mad. This is actually a cool album. I love the music and vocals. I'll give this sucker a 4, and I'll listen to their other albums.

This was a fun surprise. I really dug it. Except for the last track which I’ve heard too many times. Plus it has the best Beach Boys song about your love getting out of prison that Brian Wilson never wrote.

very jolly

I want to extend an apology to the Zombies. I initially saw this album and thought it was just going to be another forgettable psychedelic album. What I instead got what a very nice collection of baroque pop. It didn’t sound super dated, like only those who were stoned at the time would enjoy it. The harmonies were great and the production was great. How the fuck was this reviewed indifferently back then? While I don’t see this sitting among my top-rated albums, I appreciate the talent on display here and I apologize for assuming this would be more 60’s psych crap. Sincerely, this dumbass. Favorite track: Time Of The Season Other hits: A Rose for Emily, Brief Candles, Butcher’s Tale (Western Front 1914), This Will Be Our Year, Care of Cell 44, Friends of Mine

Re la onda "The beach boys". Canción favorita: Time of the season/ Brief Candles/ Care of Cell of 44

Very much of its time. Very easy and enjoyable. Nice way to start a week.

liked most songs except the butcher one. really liked the first three tracks and tracks 8 and 11

Hadn't head of The Zombies before, but I am on board for this! It was a really nice album. Very chill, great vibes. Not a single dud on this album, with Maybe After He's Gone and Beechwood Park really standing out. Then we hit the last track, Time Of The Season. I had no idea that this song was on this album. Always a great song. Hard to pick a best song. Obviously, Time Of The Season is a solid pick, but Maybe After He's Gone and Beechwood Park are also good candidates. I think I'll go with one of the lesser known tracks. Best song: Beechwood Park

Good 60s album, felt like all of their hits were on here and the other stuff was still enjoyable.

Ha! I was listening to this but thinking it was an band from the early 2000s. I was thinking "this is decent but they are just copping on 60's rock. how come they can't bring anything new to the table." And was quite ready to give them a crappy review. Only when almost done and I head the last song which was the first I recognized, I looked up and saw this was in fact the 1968 band and they were authentic of their period. So much better.

Overrated, yes. But still a layered melodic gem. Odessey and Oracle is a classic for a reason, even if the praise sometimes drowns the music.

looooove his voice so bad man

Time of the Season is a spectacular song! Wasn't too crazy about the rest of the album.

Kind of a mix of the Beach Boys, the Monkees, and the Beatles.

Very strong album. Keyboards and vocals fantastic

Good stuff

Classic

Vad är detta? Beatles eller? Fast bättre? Wow.

Great psychedelic album. A blend of folk, doo-wop, and rock. Lots of highlights throughout the album. “This Will Be Our Year” is a personal favorite. It’s a wonderful little gem of a song. And I can’t think of another example of a band saving a song as great as “Time of the Season” for the final track of the album. It feels like a humblebrag, like they believed in the rest of the material enough to let it all play out and then say, “Oh yeah, ‘Time of the Season.’ Did you guys want to hear that one too?” It’s a fantastic song that’s become representative of a whole decade. But also it’s so cool. It’s impossible to not groove when you hear it. They tapped into something magic with that one.

"Time of the Season" is one of my favorite songs from this era. It's really remarkable and feels like a real piece of art- the song moves in a way that the band doesn't care about formula for what sounds right traditionally; it has weird stabbing snares, wonderful rubato, and a nice arrangement in the space (with the backing vocals as a highlight). It's really wild to me that this is the last song on the album. I will always smile when I hear this song. "A Rose for Emily" is a a wonderful short Eleanor Rigby-esque theme song for the fantastic podcast "S-Town" and hearing it for the first time in almost a decade was awesome. Those two tracks are great. The rest of the album isn't nearly as strong, and it makes me lean more towards a 3/5, but "Time of the Season" is just SO good that this has to be a 4. It's a true standout song in an era of standout songs.

That is distilled 60’s.

Another band I have never heard of before! The album art is so enticing and does a great job of encapsulating the journey the music takes you on. The first half of the album felt like it blended really well, I found myself getting carried away by the music and when I looked at my phone, I was on a different song than I was before. I don't know if this album has any songs that I would be dying to listen to again, but I did enjoy a couple of them. This is more of a listening experience that a song album, if that makes sense.

The Zombies are the forgotten psychedelic group of the 1960's. Lost in the fold of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, The Kinks, Velvet Underground, and more that have seen varying levels of commercial success, The Zombies have yet to become a true household name. That's a shame because their second studio album, Odyssey And Oracle, is a marvel of psychedelic production and songwriting. The first side of this album is particularly great. Care Of Cell 44 shows a higher energy version of The Zombies while still maintaining a Baroque sort of beauty and a super great bassline before A Rose For Emily slows it down to a more stripped back, piano led ballad. Brief Candles is one of my favorite songs here, with its high tempo, layered production. The way the bass and piano sound together, and especially when that organ comes in during the chorus, is fantastic. This song also shows off the wonderful vocal harmonies that The Zombies are capable of. The other song that really showcases the vocal chops on display is the ballad Changes. This is not one of my favorite songs here, but the vocals are inspired and in some ways this song has a bit of an African feel to it. At some points throughout Odyssey And Oracle, The Zombies' experiments don't work. From I Want Her She Wants Me to Butcher's Tale is not a very interesting stretch of songs, and Butcher's Tale in particular is quite boring. However, the last two songs are quite good. Friends Of Mine is a fun bit of piano-dominated pop rock and the closer is the finest and most popular song on the album. Time Of The Season does not necessarily sound like it would be a hit. The song ends on an organ jam and the chorus is pretty much just the title of the song sung in harmony. But man, this song is such a fucking classic. I had no idea The Zombies were responsible for this song. Odyssey And Oracle is a great psychedelic pop album that really should get more recognition and should be considered a part of the pantheon. The first seven songs are fantastic and it features one of the best songs of the era in Time Of The Season. Some experiments don't work, but overall, it's somewhere between a 4 and a 4.5. Favs: Care Of Cell 44 Brief Candles Time Of The Season Least Fav: Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914)

Love the cover and the album. Didn’t think I would know any of their songs but I sure did. Kind of had Beatles vibe, really enjoyed.

Lekkere jaren60 muziek

I mostly enjoyed this album. They have a great sound and some surprising and interesting choices in the instrumentation, especially on "Butcher's Tale". Favorite tracks: This Will Be Our Year, Time of the Season

unlike anything the beatles ever released, this is one of the high points of '60s psychedelic rock

27/06/2025 Of its time, it was a good album.

it’s giving seals and croft, love the vibes might go to their concert? care of cell 44, beechwood park, and a rose for emily are my favs. 3.7/5.

I really liked this album- I had already listened to and saved 3-4 songs so I had high expectations. I really like the songwriting, melodies, and backing vocals.
