Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Again, we fall into the problem where the "hit" overshadows everything else on the album. The other stuff is good, I like the opener along with "Brief Candles". But it just doesn't compare to "Time of the Season". Putting it at the end was probably a good idea, because putting it at the beginning would make everything else seem so much lesser. Still, the other stuff is decent and I liked it as much, but that last track is so good it takes away from the other songs a little bit. I know I would listen to some of those tracks again, so that's something. It's straddling the edge for me, around a 3.5. So rounding up it's a 4, I guess. Top tracks: "Time Of The Season", "Care Of Cell 44," "Maybe After He's Gone," "Brief Candles"
I knew this was a classic, but I never gave it a listen before now. My overall impression is that it's really dated. Everything on it screams 60s. That's not necessarily a bad thing - I like music from the 60s, but I suppose I prefer the stuff that's a little more timeless. A few songs caught my attention when I was only half listening, but just felt so dated when I listened closely (e.g., Hung Up On a Dream and Changes). The only ones that seemed to hold up on close listen were This Will Be Our Year (nice, clever pop) and the classic Time of the Season which is certainly VERY 60s, but a true classic track. In fact, I'd say Time of the Season and She's Not There (from their debut) are not just "quintessential Zombies" but also perfect representations of cool 60s music. I'm going with a 4 for cultural significance - it's good, but very much OF ITS TIME.
This was delightful. It was very clean and well produced with some lovely harmonies and decent tunes. Reading Wikipedia after made so much sense how it was recorded in Abbey road before the Beatles as it has a lot of the same charm.
They have some super old sounding poppy stuff and then some real great ones. Pretty good!
Decent
4 great album
Superior then a lot of the Beatles lame tunes, plus Time of the Season is an all-time song.
The Zombies? Nie gehört! Ist aber ganz nett. Viele Streicher.
Groovy background music while working
Good
A Swan Song for the band. It's wild that they split ways before the release of the album, but I respect the integrity of the move. What was left was a quirky, playful album reminiscent of the Beatles and other early English bands (used same studio and Mellotron as Sgt. Pepper) but also helped to gently shape the Laurel Canyon sound as it emerged halfway across the world
Just does enough to really stand the test of time. The first and last songs are spectacular and the rest aren't far behind.
Butchers tale and brief candles were AWESOME
Time of the Season is one of the best songs of the 60s. Rest of the album is super catchy too.
Really enjoyed this album. It's fun and danceable, while having a lot of music interest with the vocal harmonies. One of the things that impresses me most actually is the timing with which they give their instruments space. They know when to be more sparse and when to be more expensive. Bass-playing is insane and vibes are amazing. The best albums transport you to a new sound world and this one definitely does that
Dat eerste nummer is sick, heel lekker album verder
Forse una delle esperienze di musica anni '60 più compiute che abbia vissuto fino ad ora, dato che non mi sono immersa abbastanza. Psychedelic pop, rockettino, dolce e carino, con diverse parti memorabili, specie nella 2ª parte del disco, come con "This will be' our year", "Friends of mine" e la più popolare "Time of the season". Se i Beatles avessero fatto più psychedelic pop, se avessero avuto delle tinte di doors, e fossero stati leggermente più hippy, ma con meno identità individuale. Album comunque sempre piacevole.
Happy go lucky late 60s psychedelic pop rock
solid album. as some others pointed out, one can definitely see some similarities to the Beatles – interestingly, I think this album is significantly more beatle-esque than their debut album Begin Here, which makes one wonder to what extent the studio and the equipment might have contributed to shaping the sound. but of course the Zombies definitely do stand on their own, and this album has a ton of great songs. I find myself repeatedly drawn to the bridge of Beachwood Park, which to me somehow sounds very modern compared to the rest of the song and the album, providing an interesting contrast
I didn’t know the album but turns out this is iconic
Psych pop, baroque pop, or pure pop, this is a terrific record. Great harmonies, catchy songs (for the most part). I didn't really care for it when I first heard it at 14, but listening years later it felt like sunshine. Beach Boys and Beatles come shining through these songs. Love it.
Loved
bem interessante ainda mais q tem uma das músicas que mais gosto do mundo
Mooie sound, paar goede nummers, weinig slechte
7 / 10 Tiene el sonido de Abbey Road de los 60, donde se grabó. Muchas armonías vocales estilo primeros Beatles o Beach Boys. La última canción es una joya.
The album definitely has that golden oldies feel that makes me feel like I am riding around in the back of my parents car as a kid. But it also has some strange almost creepy touches to it as well. Butcher's Tale in particular stood out. I could see myself seeking out this one again.
8/10. Great vibes. Kind of Beatles / Beach Boys vibes. Creativity felt a little lower than the Beatles though. Put Brief Candles and Time of the Season on the 5⭐️ song list.
I came across this album a few years ago. I was familiar with Time of the Season, but the rest seems completely different to me. Seems like a Kinks album from the mid 60’s. Very mellow and relaxing. With cool stories.
Immer wieder mal etwas neues Unbekanntes was mir gefällt, danke.
This album is like if The Beatles were actually good.
This band is super underrated. An amazing British Invasion band that lived at the same era as the Beatles with a smaller life span. This is their best album and their phsychadelic pop rock with their Beatles influence makes this a really really good album with great fluidity. Band split up too soon and only did 2 albums I believe in their short lived span. Saw them in concert recently qnd they are still good. They recorded more albums but their 60s glory days they only did 2. These are one of what could have been bands that reached a peak in a short period and left a good dent on the history of music. Must listen to album.
3.75
A savior after some duds. Brilliant production, and underrated writing
Beautiful! I didn't expect the sixties album by somebody named Zombies to be so folksy, but wow, it was nice. Absolutely lovely crooning voice, gorgeous lyrics, and The Butcher's Tale gave me the chills.
Gem

Like a blend of Beach Boys and The Beatles. The album was not successful when released but it eventually achieved a cult following which is very interesting to me. "Time of the Season" is the best song on the album.
Good vibes classic rock. A disappointing lack on undead, but the vibes made up for it.
Solid 60s Album, Loved it.
reminded me a lot of the beetles, i really liked it
the beatles
This Will Be Our Year Time of the Season
Not the music I would expect from a group called the Zombies.
Classic for a reason
Really cute album
I love this type of music, & it’s got one of my favorite songs
Surprising little vibe
The zombies, I owe you an apology. I wasn’t really familiar with your game. Some heat fr
I liked this. Simpsons: No
Really enjoyed this album, it was just fun and nice. Highlights for me: A Rose for Emily, This Will be Our Year, and Time of The Season.
fun, great recording
Pioneers for the 60s psychadellic scene Exquisite record 4/5
Gave this 2 listens and enjoyed it, but didn’t really sit with me. After looking up online how much of a classic this was, I decided to go back and give it one more go with more attentive ears. I’m glad I did because it is fantastic. The songwriting is great and so is the singing. Lovely album and can see why its got such a good reputation. 1968?!?!
While this isn't a timeless classic, I dig it man! This is more of a time capsule that is fun to revisit. I enjoyed the other songs I didn't know ("Care of Cell 44" and "Beachwood Park") but still doesn't come close to the all-timer "Time of the Season". "What's your name? Who's your daddy?" Pure genius! Great trippy 60s psych vibes galore.
Really quite good. Besides the last track, which I bet a lot of people think actually is a Beatles song it sounds like a Beatles album you've never heard played much, that makes sense given it was recorded at Abbey road
a rose for emily hung up on a dream this will be our year friends of mine
Great album. Classic sound for the times
very goofy
I really enjoyed this! Great 60s acid rock
Great opener. I feel like the album was kinda back-loaded though? This Will Be Our Year and Time of the Season (my favorite) were all the the end of the album and they are certified bangers.
Highly anticipated especially since I enjoy She’s Not There and Time Of The Season. Good 60s pop with nice California-style vocal and content and sounds connected to post 1966 Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, Procul Harem, Small Faces, CS&N. Pleasant, but not up to the gushing reputation on first listen. Second listen and familiarity is making me thoroughly enjoy this! 3 stars just become 4. Excellent vocals.
Great 60's rock! 4/5
A classic!
This was pretty good! It sounded like the type of Beatles songs that I like.
I can imagine the guy from Belle and Sebastian listening to this album and thinking, "aw yeah, I'm having that" to almost every song
While the hits are definitely a step above the rest of the record, it is still very good overall. Love the singer’s voice and some of these songs just make me feel at ease.
It was fun, it was something my father would listen to
Groovy!
Kind of Beatles variant, but less obvious and/or pop. It still tastes strongly like the '60s. It's well and subtly orchestrated, with a little psychdelic twist. Pretty nice to listen to.
What I'd rather listen to than The Beatles, if wanting to listen to something Beatles-ish.
Greta album
Démarre tranquillement. Beaucoup de chansons très connues ensuite. Des classiques du rock des années 70
Cracker
This was pretty good. I would say their sound is a little ahead of their time even. Some hippy vibes with more rock and bluesy instrumentals. Time of the Season on here too.
I had previously only heard Time of the Seasons. This was great.
PERFECT POP
A classic! And timeless. Truly love.
The album artwork is giving Beatles...but with more drugs. Oh boy. Okay wait, I really like this. I mean it's track 1 so we'll see if this lasts. It's lasting. I'm on track 6 and still really digging the sound. I'm guessing track 10 is referring to WWI? Ohhhh I've heard track 12 before. 4/5 I was pleasantly surprised by this one.
Great sounds. Time of the Season is an all time classic.
The endless wars to determine who the best British Invasion band was is dominated by the conflict between The Beatles and The Stones. Fans of The Who and The Kinks continue their guerrilla war from the bushes. Yet the fear that unites us all is those fighting for The Zombies, and the small but real chance they might be right.
For a band called "The Zombies" I guess I expected it to be less flowery. But I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was actually kinda calming
bin irgendwenn iigschlafe, aber s het mer no gfalle 3.5/5
Such a great album, I can listen to this several times a year and love it every time.
I really enjoyed some of the songs, both their lyrics and the music. Nevertheless, I don't fully understand them assembled as an album, I don't see something in common, some kind of essence, appart from the lyrics evoking summer, friendship and love. I probably should try listening to it again in the summertime.
Really good. Never heard most of it and enjoyed almost all of it. Perfect background cleaning music
BL: The Zombies are a band I know a lot about but not much of the history. The only song of theirs I listen to is “She’s not there”, so it’ll be interesting to date back the knowledge I personally know about the band and then match it alongside the music AL: this album offered a much richer experience than I was expecting. Whilst not perfect. The uses of the Mellotron, alongside the vocals and psychedelic rooms crafted within this album are so much more textured and complex than their previous explorations which I know. Really enjoyed listening to this one. FT: “Care of Cell 44”, “Maybe After He’s Gone”, “Beechwood Park”, “Butchers Tale (Western Front 1914)” 4/5
Good, consistent, light psychedelic sound. Almost a Beach Boys vibe in some of the tracks. Standout is Time of the Season but I also enjoyed Beechwood Park and Care of Cell 44. Overall solid album, a quick, light listen.
Very cool, beach boy/Beatles vibes. A Rose for Emily was familiar. Also Time of the Season! Bangers. 7/10.
4.2
Can see how it influenced a lot of rock/indie since
A bona fide classic of psych pop that might get slept on more than it should. Yeah, Time of the Season is the home run track here, but the band brings a lot to the table in terms of song arrangements here. The tracks are tight, and contain compelling chord structures that keep you moving through a breezy 35 minutes. No, this wasn't one of the more experimental or groundbreaking records of the late 60s, but it's genuinely great.
Introspective, well-read lyricism is complemented by deceptively intricate baroque pop arrangements in this underappreciated-in-its-time, ahead-of-its-time vestige of psychedelia's golden age.
Go hippies go
What a fun album. This is why I do this project. Never heard of the band nor album, but now I get to participate in listening to a historically notable band/album and I enjoyed it more than I expected to. I enjoyed this and may revisit a few songs even though it’s not what I usually listen to
Enjoyed the listen. Second time around the songs and vibe grew on me. 4/5!
Great album with a timeless sound. Some beautiful tracks that seamlessly transition between gloomy and lively. The first 5 songs really standout with A Rose for Emily being the highlight.
whats your naAame? (Who’s your) who's your daddy? is he rich (is he rich) like meEeEEe? has he takkken any tiiime to show (to show ) you what you neEeEd
Liked it, way better than The Beatles Already knew "Time of the Season" but not the band
This music really is in my wheelhouse so I believe I’ve rated It higher than some. Great melodies and interesting lyrics from the time period. I’d sit down and listen to this album again and really enjoy it
Fun trippy exceedingly drugged out late 60s band. Very enjoyable!
I had not explored the Zombies too much, but I really enjoyed what I heard. Psychedelic pop at its best, some similarities to the Beatles but distinct in its own right. Will listen to more Zombies in the future.
Not the GOAT but I do love the Zombies
Good!
Leichte gute Laune Musik.
I wonder if this album gets assigned on 1/1 like the Phil Spector Christmas album gets assigned on 12/25 because “This Will Be Our Year” is the perfect song to start a new year with. I think this would be a five star record if it weren’t for “Butcher’s Tale”. Even with that dud this is a 4-star record for me. I think the baroque pop sound is so unique and enjoyable to listen to. A great album.
Very lovely and wholesome album. I really liked the theme of love some songs handled magnificently
Like
This is a really cool album.
Good album, very "Beatlesk". Like the harmonies and the singing in general. Already knew Time of the Season without knowing.
Yes, I like this music.
Lots of their songs on this album talk of seasons. Funny that Time of the Season is one of their biggest hits. That just happened to be on this album as well and it’s such a great song so just for that I’ll give this 4 stars.
My right ear thoroughly enjoyed “Care of Cell 44”.
"Odessey and Oracle" by The Zombies, released in 1968, is a marvel of psychedelic pop brilliance. Despite its initially overlooked status, the album is a treasure trove of jangly guitars, lush harmonies, and clever songwriting. The Zombies, known for hits like "Time of the Season," showcase their versatility here, offering a pleasantly funky, lighthearted, and uplifting experience. The album's intricate arrangements and poetic lyrics contribute to its timeless charm. "Odessey and Oracle" is a testament to the band's musical prowess, blending sophistication with an infectious sense of joy, earning a well-deserved place in the pantheon of classic '60s albums. 4/5
This is a really great album. It's one I've spent time listening to in the past. I really like the Zombies vibes but they do feel very of a time to me, which is the only thing that keeps me from making this one a 5/5. I'm not as drawn to them as other 60s bands just because their sound lacks that timelessness. But this does have lots of solid tracks on it. Standout Tracks: Care of Cell 44, A Rose for Emily, Brief Candles, Hung Up on a Dream, I Want Her She Wants Me, This Will Be Our Year, Time of the Season
I liked the vocals.
This feels like the definition and the birth of psychedelic rock. You can hear the influence that the rest of psych rock got from bands of this caliber during this time frame. Not a bad track on the album and the harmonization is always satisfying. Some of the mixing could be better.
Amazingly fresh sounding, has aged very well, really enjoyable listen.
Cool album! I'm surprised I havent heard more from them, carries a great late 60's experimental rock vibe much like their contemporaries.
Really enjoyed this one. It’s like Pet Sounds had a little British baby
For starter psychedelic rock is one of my favorite rock style, from 1968, this album is their most famous so even tho i never listen to it, its my kind of musc The oppening track: Care of Cell 44 is a very good psycedelic pop song, remind me on the Beachs Boys in like pets sounds. A Rose for Emily is more of a baroque song, with the piano is very good. Time of the season is a song that i know for a very long time, without knwoing it was from them, its a classical psychedelic rock song, its the best and ost famous on the album. For the rest of the song i won't go track by trakc, but this album is very good an could be compare (a bit less good tho) to classic like pet sounds, disraeli gears and the kinks. Is used a variety of music style like pop, baroque, chamber and rock. The vocals harmonies are efficent and the voice of the singer Colin Blunstone as a beautiful voice and its very obious here. Its a lesser good version of pets sounds wich is one of the greatest albums of all times so its not that bad, they have their unique sounds and music.
Listened to this a couple times years ago but not since, and after a couple listens today i'm not sure why. This is a perfectly concise album of excellent psychedelic rock from the 60s. Songs like 'Care of Cell 44', 'Hung Up On a Dream', 'This Will Be Our Year', 'Time of the Season', all absolutely fantastic. That's a full third of the album being outstanding, and the rest doesn't fall too far behind it. Super solid songwriting and fun performances, will be listening back to it very soon.
Psychadelic rock, often reminds me of a darker Beach Boys or even Beatles to some extent (yes two very basic 60s picks) but they dark themes as well as strange tones make a very interesting album
Never heard of them before. They sound exactly like the Beatles (in a good way) to me. Good stuff.
Classic 60's rock, psychedelic's were definitely involved. Something dad has probably listened to before. Good album to put on in the background of a sesh, house cleaning, etc. Keywords- Gentle rock, easy listening, 60's, British Notable song(s)- Time of The Season
soothing.
I only knew the last song (Time of the Season), but I liked the album overall. I'm surprised to learn that it didn't do very well when it came out. Maybe the band name put people off? It's not the sound I expect from "The Zombies". The sound like Beatles / Beach Boys / Monkeys / etc.
A good psychedelic rock album. The Zombies are known for their famous song "Time of the Season". I never heard most of their other songs in the album until today, and honestly, they are pretty great. Definitely will listen to more of their stuff! Favorite Song(s): "Time of the Season" (duh!), "Changes", "Care of Cell 44", "Tomorrow"
p153. 1968. 4 stars Quality 60s Brit pop that hits the sweet spot between The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Gorgeous arrangements, quality songs, and Colin Blunstone has a wonderful voice. All that is missing is a sense of excitement.
Pretty great pop songs tbh. Just charming yknow. No pretension about it. Nice vocals with some variation. Boppier ones haven't aged quite as well but overall I thought it was a really nice time. Three and a half. Fave track: Rose for Emily
Now this is more the 60s psych pop I can meet and be content with. Different and unusual vocals, baroque songwriting elements, and a few beats that remain with you far more than a lot of other British pop acts in the late 60s. Some obvious tracks stronger than others (namely the bookend tracks being the standouts), but overall this is is a solid record from beginning to end. Somewhere between a strong three-and-a-half to a light four. Fave tracks: Care of Cell 44 and Time of the Season
I liked this a lot, really interesting psychedelic pop rock thing going on here. I do think I liked this a bit more on the strength of the singles than I did as a cohesive album, but the highs were really great. In particular, "A Rose for Emily", "This Will Be Our Year", and "Time of the Season" all stand out as timeless hits that still work great today. I listened to this a second time as I cooked dinner, and I think I liked it even more. A couple other songs that didn't stand out as much stood out this time, really strong album top to bottom. This is a fascinating band too. They had a few songs on their previous (first) album that got them a bit of a following in the UK mostly. Then they recorded this album but barely had enough money to even finish it, and immediately disbanded. One US musician convinced a label to market it in the US and then they kind of blew up. They decided not to regroup to play it live though, so the band never really got back together again except for a few random live shows and recordings many years later. Fake bands tried to capitalize on the hype for a tour, and there were multiple "The Zombies" touring that were not the real band. Also when they picked their name some of band members didn't know what a zombie was, it's funny how that just wasn't a thing in pop culture at the time. And "Odyssey" is spelled wrong on the album cover. Their friend made it and just spelled it wrong, but they tried to play it off as intentional for awhile before admitting it. With all this, this album feels like it really had no business making a lasting impression, but it did and I'm glad for that. This was a fun listen. Favorite song: This Will Be Our Year Other: Care Of Cell 44, A Rose for Emily, Beechwood Park, Hung Up On A Dream, I Want Her She Wants Me, Time of the Season 11/20/23
Relaxed, but does become somewhat monotonous.
Dope dope dope
Em recorda moltíssim als Beatles l'estil d'aquesta gent. Molt content d'haver-los descobert.
A love song to his girlfriend in prison A song about Emily, who no one will ever love, and ever her flower garden will fade so it can't even be used on her grave A song about how maybe his girl will love him again after the new guy is gone A song about PTSD during WWI. Truly, this album has everything.
Even though some songs were a bit too slow and campy, overall this was a good psychadelic album. It was pretty well paced and most of the tracks were either kinda catchy or good for a slow listen.
Listened to this while playing Aeon's End solo against the Carapace Queen. I lost by a lot. Another album that I am totally familiar with. I remember downloading this around the time Scissor Sisters released their debut album. I was very much into this big baroque pop music fest. I think I was also listening to a lot of Presidents of the United States of America and Elephant 6 bands. Listening to this again, over 17 years later (or more...the memory is foggy)...I was amazed by how much I still thorough enjoyed the album. From the opening moments through the jam session at the end of the final track (which I'm sure when performed live, went on for like 10 minutes)...this album is full of great orchestration and arrangements, and unexpected chord changes. Not a perfect album, but pretty freaking great.
Real fun listen. I totally forgot about this band... And I forgot that they were the band who sang Time Of the Season. Music form the era is just great. A lot of ambition and ideas floating around. This isn't cookie cutter music and besides some aspects of the more popular or accessible songs that can sound like other bands of the era; organ solos, vocal harmonies, some compositional parts, they really give it their own flavour. Of course the influences are there and in no way am I saying their music is 100% original. But they definitely have their own identity, and they are good at their craft. Would listen to again.
Solid short little album. Was a cool surprise when the "classic song that everyone knows" showed up as the last track.
Loved the writing on this album as well as the sound. There were quite a few standout songs for me, and even the ones that weren't were still really good. I'm rather delighted by this album.
Indeed incredible harmonies and writing. Will listen again
Very deeeecent. Not an album or artist I'd jump to but quite a few cool songs here. I've recognised at like 3 or 4 of the songs, might be worth checking out more of their music. Very useful for my Film playlist. I really wanna give it 3.5 stars, but we'll round up
a really fun, Beatle-esque album full of that 60's style. a lot of great songs on here although they do feel very similar to each other. finished with a banger
60s music with great vibe
Blind artist and album. The bookending 4 or 5 tracks were really great! Definitely a popular style for its decade, but they really shined emphasizing their instrumentals but also their vocal harmonies. The closing track was pretty interesting for its use if clapping and vocal breathing for a creative effect. Catchy as well. Mid tracks kinda eh but still match the vibe of the album.
Summary: A summery baroque-pop collection of songs with fantastic production, vocals, and instrumentation (for the most part). There was a lot of clear inspiration taken from other mid-/late-60s artists, and it's combined beautifully into this pretty paintbox of an album. Half a star docked for the songwriting being slightly weak at times, but luckily that still rounds up. Care Of Cell 44: A bright Summer-of-Love atmosphere. Some great singing and bass in particular, and one shouldn't shake a stick at the drummer either (pun intended). Some great, brash vocal harmonies that make for archetypal 60s rock-pop. The 2:55 drop into harmonisation is great. The only real issue here is the lack of a hook, apart from possibly the piano/harpsichord melody. A Rose For Emily: The kind of haphazard melody one might expect from a Pet Sounds deep cut. (Likely an inspiration.) Some strong back-and-forth singing with a simple piano backing. The ending is Beatlesque; actually, the Zombies' whole sound kind of is. Maybe After He's Gone: There's a lot of vocals trying to grab your attention in the first 60 seconds, and upon first listen it's a lot to take in. Still, brilliantly composed. Very high piano chords are very high. I've just noticed how clean the production's been so far. Another very typical 60s-pop imperfect-cadence ending. Beechwood Park: A laid-back feel with some cool vocal and guitar effects. The chorus is well-constructed, again with very strong vocals and harmonies, but the rest is a little repetitive. Brief Candles: Unusual vocal enunciation until the change in feel at 30 seconds, which is more Zombies-sounding. I have a huge soft spot for the chord progression used in the chorus (I-I7-IV-ivadd4-V). Great song. Hung Up On A Dream: Whoa. Now this chord progression is interesting, and quite unpredictable. The vocalist sounds like Nico (from the Velvet Underground) here. Fantastic drumming, and unintrusive, beautiful backing vocals in the left channel that sound like a children's choir. An unexpected ending. Changes: I was hoping this would be a Bowie cover until I remembered that wasn't really possible. The (unharmonised) singing here is a little unkempt, similar to Syd Barrett's. The flute keyboard thing (also used on Strawberry Fields Forever) is used to shadow the vocal melody, and it's fun. Unusual percussion too, but it's a great choice for the song. Solid ending with a fadeout. I Want Her She Wants Me: The two-part harmony breakdown is great, as is the transition back to the bass-led chorus(?). Beautiful outro, but the fadeout should've been slower and been started earlier. This Will Be Our Year: Great chord progression, and the guitar shines because of it. Earnest singing that might be the strongest it's been so far. A short, sweet track with a simple, pretty melody – but a darn good composition. Favourite track so far. Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914): Another Barrett-esque vocal. Very simple instrumentation; apart from the foreboding intro, it's just an organ (and a brief mellotron cameo) and some occasional drumstick tapping. Solid. My [insert body part here] won't stop shaking. Friends of Mine: Energetic guitar and drums back a vocal performance that goes all over the place texturally. These rapid changes took me most of the song to warm up to, but by the end I loved them. Silly ending. Time of the Season: A chill atmosphere, made especially so by the vocal and bass parts. The sudden, intense harmonies in the chorus are fabulous. And that organ/keyboard solo... Gosh. It's the first really strong improvisation we've had on the album, and it's so good. "Who's your daddy" is a strange line to hear in 2023. A second organ solo (this time containing two organs fighting for the spotlight) closes out the song. A groovy, tasteful way to end the album. Also, this song has singlehandedly moved the album from a 3.5 to a 4.
Nice discovery. Psycodelic Rock from late 60s. My cup of tea. 3,7. Up to 4.
Such a nice view to this type of older music. Very creative and not very repetitive unless it’s the main line. I really liked care of cell 44, first song told me I’d like this album. Also the burgers take is just so interesting to me for some reason. Part of me is wants to rate it high but I know it ain’t the perfect album.
Know a good bit of The Zombies, but have never actually listened to this album. For 1968 especially, it feels like an album that would do well in its time. Great Psych Rock for the 1960s. My only complaint is it almost sounds like they're trying to replicate The Beatles' sound at times, but honestly not bad either way. Pretty decent album in all, very listenable. Personal Favorites - Time of the season, Beechwood Park, This will be our year
great album
Very nice Beatles-esque psych pop album. Ive listened to this album before, but its a joy to revisit each time.
Very English classic album that not enough people know.
7/10 good album
Another great album, somewhat timeless, lyrics and sounds don’t ‘seem’ aged, besides some of the production value.
I actually really like this one great vibe, consistent, short, powerful, just a really really easy listen I think 4/5 is a fair score, i think it could possibly grow on me more, i would definitely revisit it at some point, good stuff all round
Really quite liked this, and would say there is not a bad track on the record. However, there is also little that is outstanding which keeps this from being a truly superb listen. Certainly one that I will put on again, however. A high 3/low 4 for me.
A bit raw, as expected from when it came out but it is groundbreaking. Great and innovative.
Pop com nuances psicodélicas com a duração certa, pouco mais de meia hora, e ainda fecha com o hit.
This is a wonderfully bright, colorful, and breezy album. It really just brings out the best in me and puts me in a good mood. I absolutely love that opening track. And some of the baroque experimentation on here is pretty cool. It adds a level of uniqueness that more commercial pop music didn't really have in this time period. My favorite example would probably be the organ on Butchers Tale. It makes the song sound somewhat ghastly and chilling. I think some songs do come off as a little plain comparatively, and don't try as many interesting ideas. Rating: 7/10
3.5/5
Pretty damn good with some classics
Pretty good
Falta un pelín por oír todavía, pero vi de donde salió el sample de "Angels" de los Sound Defects, que loco.
This was new to me, and I really liked it.
Zombies are pretty good, shockingly. 5 stars for this will be our year
A rare 60's album I had not listened to before. The mixing on this album is superb. The subject matter such a sign of the times. Love it.
Classic psychedelia
There’s no way you can’t be in a good mood while listening to this. So positive sounding. “Butchers Tale” had a different tone. Much weirder than the others, so of course it’s my favorite. Then we get the classic “Time of the Season” that was exploding with big daddy energy. 7/10
Peace, love and white boys singing in harmony. Each song has a different tone all while screaming this was made in the 60s. Not really too much to say about this one. A bunch of pleasant songs finished off with an absolute banger. 7/10
Okay 60s stuff. Didn't feel super swayed by any of it, but it was a pleasant listen for some semi-pscyh rock.
Very fun prog rock album. Didn’t know this is where Time of the Season was from. It started good and ended strong, kinda wish there was more songs like Time of the Season.
Það er eitthvað sakleysi í þessu sem ég fíla. Nokkur mjög góð lög.
Never heard the band before, but it's quite good. Also, Eminem sampled the last song of the album on his "Rhyme Or Reason" track. Listened to it on 15 Oct. 2023
Mixed bag of tunes. Admittedly, I wasn’t paying close attention throughout but when I did I didn’t feel a pull to continue doing so. I should give another listen sometime. UPDATE: I listened again, and appreciated the album more. There are some semi-dissonant, psychedelic tunes in here that don't really have the hooky melodies that I might need for a distracted listen. Note to self: be better.
I think it would have been much better if I had listened to it 50 years ago.
Mucho mejor de lo que recordaba. Desde el Care of Cell 44, A Rose for Emily, Brief candles, Friends of mine y para terminar su famosa Time of the season. Genial.
peak late 60s psychedelic. Lives in the shadows of pet sounds but not far off great songwriting, maybe an overuse of descending chord structures but it's so effective i don't mind it Standout songs: Beechwood Park I Want Her She Wants Me Time of the Season Whats your name? Whos your daddy? Is he rich like me? Come on.... soo cool
it's got Beatles vibes but a bit less produced/a lot more interesting. are the Beatles psychedelic rock, technically? not gonna be a frequent re-listen, as hearing Brief Candles two days in a row made me frown, but every track is really solid skip(s): none favorite track(s): A Rose for Emily, This Will Be Our Year
Strong hippy vibes. This album feels like the quintessential British invasion-hippie movement album. It's hard to discern the impact and influence of this album because there is so much sonic crossover with the beetles here. Final track mega iconic.
Heard this one, didn't remember loving it, so I don't want to relisten. A few good tracks if I recall.
Really liked the mellotron playing, and love the more lush arrangements with harmonies
New to me. Lovely. Grew over a few listens.
Had to listen to it twice to get in the mood for it but I liked it the second time!!
Not really the type of music I enjoy often, but a really interesting beat and musical approach.
I can hear how this album would greatly influence future psychedelic rock bands. A nice listen.
Fun, wouldn't mind listening again
Vrolijk, gezellig. Een bandje met aantal zangers. Wel erg onbekend maar leuk!
Really enjoyed this one. Classic 60s album. Lyrical content seemed more meaningful than others out at that time and the songs seem actually inspired by personal experiences. Butchers Tale was a theatrical joy to listen to.
Destined to be be further reappraised, and deservedly so. At the time of release, it was the victim of record company shenanigans (i.e. suits who didn't realize how good it was, if they even bothered to listen). Even over 50 years later, it still boggles the mind how so many people whiffed on realizing the hit potential of "Time Of The Season".
Great tunes, harrowing war song, lovely hooks, dreamy voice
Much better than I expected
I was pleasantly surprised with this album, balancing between Pet Sounds and Sgt Peppers, with an amazing singer, but a few mediocre songs unfortunately, in amongst the brilliants.
Pre-listening thoughts: Speedrunning this album before class because today is a really busy day!! But I've heard of the Zombies thru my friend who I studied abroad with, and I've heard She's Not There (not on this album). I feel like I'll enjoy this! Post/during listening thoughts: Ok so the Zombies are pretty similar sonically to the Beach Boys. Not shocking since my friend who recommended them is a HUGE Beach Boys stan. Care of Cell 44 sounds soooo much like a Beach Boys track with the layered harmonies and the little 60s beat. A Rose For Emily is a very toned down track with just a piano as the backing, but it's cute! Something about the verses of Maybe After He's Gone reminds me of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Beechwood Park is definitely 60s man like it SOUNDS like how the album cover looks. Brief Candles has something odd going on with the rhythm, would def be a grower. Hung Up On a Dream has that Beatles shit going on where vocals are only in one earbud. BOOO. I don't love the echo on Changes, but the simple instrumentation is charming. I Want Her She Wants Me is a great song title lollll. That song reminds me a little of God Only Knows rhythm wise and with the bababas. Butcher's Tale sounds like a They Might Be Giants song lol. Love the overlapping vocal lines on Friends of Mine but the drums are a little intense, but the piano is lovely. I do see why Time of the Season is one of their most popular songs bc it's a great album closer with a unique beat creation and it's just really rich sonically. This was a great album! When I'm in the mood for this kind of music I will definitely turn to this again. 7.5/10. Fav Tracks: Care of Cell 44, Maybe After He's Gone, This Will Be Our Year, Time of the Season
Good pop, fun harmonies. I can see the influence they've had on current artists. I didn't know that This Will Be Our Year was a cover when OKGO did it. Overall I enjoyed it!
I can see why this record is on the list, and I enjoyed listening, but not entirely my thing. So from a “my opinion” perspective it’s a 3, but from a “I can understand the importance” perspective…
I liked this quite a bit. Really good pop/psychadelic stuff here. I'll listen to it again, sometime, but probably not anytime real soon.
Delightful throughout, a chamber pop gem, and perhaps the birth of that gloried sub-genre. "Changes" and "I Want Her She Wants Me" are both charming, calling to mind the Beach Boys and, thus laterally, Bach, transcending the strictures of simplistic psychedelic pop of the '60s.
Bittersweet, nuanced and elegant baroque pop that's ahead of its time in a lot of ways. A really lovely listen. Some of the baroque elements are a bit quaint, but many of these songs are still surprisingly fresh sounding now. Time of the Season is obviously the star track of the album, one of the great songs of its time. Fave Songs: Time of the Season; This Will Be Our Year; A Rose for Emily; Beechwood Park; Care of Cell 44; I Want Her, She Wants Me; Maybe After He's Gone
Very good, love music from the sixties. Really nice and satisfying to listen too
Alfa instruments and vocals ez 4.5
If was a really fun album! Loved it!!
Pretty good👌

Time of the Season❤
Great psych album. Imaginative and accomplished, great singing and harmonies, really enjoyable
Mehr als solides Psychadelic Album, super abwechslungsreich und natürlich Klassiker wie „this will be our year“ und „time of the season“ Produktion so Mittel, was der größte Schwachpunkt ist. Auch keine wirklich bahnbrechend neue Sachen für Psychadelic Rock, aber dafür ein paar schöne ruhige Songs. Macht Spaß Starke 8/10
One way to measure harmonic music is through its ability to pull your voice into it, somewhere under the melody line and always weaving through. If Odessey doesn't start that way, there's no way to avoid it by the end. Butcher's Tale feels like Scott Walker in more than one facet; Time of the Season is a magnificent closer. Another measure of psych is through the slipshod. And you wouldn't know it listening to Odessey and Oracle now. Make a mockery of intent - and that's the joy.
It's a nice album :) I want to listen to it again, and then I might think it is a 5.
Fun album with two big fat juicy hits
Buen beatles-esque, super happy y hippie
Classic sounding 60s album. The last song I knew and loved. Great album
Pretty good 60's psychedelic rock! I don't know if I'd listen again, but I enjoyed this.
Highlights: Beechwood Park, A Rose For Emily, This Will Be Our Year Leave Em's: I Want Her She Wants Me, Butcher's Tale Overall Thoughts: A British rock group from the 60's that is not the Beatles? Yes please! This album was very enjoyable for me. Ranging between slower and more up-beat songs but maintaining a strong independent sound made it a fun listen. They do sound a lot like the Beatles to me but there are worse things in the world of music. There are hardly any songs that I would prefer to be left off the album, despite the wide variety of sounds provided. I was surprised that I had never heard of these guys but I am impressed with this record and am excited to hear more like it. Score Breakdown: 3.817 & 4 -> 3.909
Wonderfully catchy and heartfelt classic 60s pop rock. Harmonically ambitious, not one song passing without multiple modulations. Both engaged and detracted at points. A Rose for Emily, Hung Up on a Dream and Maybe After He’s Gone are each the emotional highlights of the album. Changes and Butcher’s Tale were weird and Friends of Mine is annoying and dumb. Closes strongly with the groovy, seductive and soul-filled reprise Time of the Season to cap a well-rounded experience.
-Starts off happy and upbeat with Care Of Cell 22 -A Rose For Emily is a slower sadder love song(?) and may possibly be about losing people or loneliness
While I feel like this list has an over abundance of 60s psychedelic pop, this album definitely slaps. Solid front to back, a bit tired of the genre but this was a great one.
I always enjoy this album. It was fresh and original while still being fun to listen to. Good writing, chords, production, instrumentation, and singing. Structure’s alright. I would’ve played “Time of the Season” first and “This Will Be Out Year” last. Good opener and closer. 4/5
It was nice listening to something beyond Time of the Season
12 songs clocking in at a total of 35 minutes, ending on 'Time of the Season'. What's not to love?
Considering the band name, this album is very much alive.
As a big fan of psych rock I thought I’d like this more. Time of the Season remains the best song from this album. Also different from everything else on this record in every way Saved tracks: Beechwood Park, Changes, Friend of Mine, Time of the Season
Wonderful vocals, amazing harmonies, but the songs still kind of fall flat. This Will Be Our Year shines through and Time of the Season will be hoisted to the rafters for generations to come.
Great hippie vibes
Я хочу и дальше получать альбомы
Some top tier songs (Care of Cell 44, This Will Be Our Year, obviously Time of the Season) but a fair amount of middling ones too.
A really strong album and I just love their overall sound. Not quite 5-star level but it’s close.
Like the style of this. Easy listening and kind of like the doors
Pretty good
Very enjoyable! Love Time of the Season! It's a GOAT. This album is full of fun little songs that I can't help but like. 4/5
Hmm
This has like Beatles and Chicago vibes. Also, the foresight to close with Time of the Season - brilliant. They must have known that was an instant classic.
Very Beatles-esque.
What a pleasant surprise, fresh and bright and charming. "Changes" and "I Want Her She Wants Me" are just lovely – Bach-y and Beach Boys-esque. But the whole disc is classy and lush chamber pop. And it's a clear indictment of the music business that artists such as the Z's here only feel free to do their best work having decided to quit the industry. The hit may be the weakest, least interesting (if only because the most familiar) song of the bunch.
Very solid record
Cover 6/10 Care Of Cell 44 - 7/10 A Rose For Emily - 3/10 Maybe After He`s Gone - 8/10 Beechwood Park - 8/10 Brief Candles - 5/10 Hung Up On A Dream - 4/10 Changes - 7,5/10 I Want Her She Wants Me - 8/10 This Will Be Our Year - 5/10 Butcher`s Tale - 6/10 Friends of Mine - 5/10 Time of the Season - 6,5/10 Insgesamt: 4 Sterne
still sound fresh. Reminds me of Pet Sound
Kinda meh in many places, although enjoyable enough with a shock at the end (Time of the Season) that brings it up a notch!
Showing that the Zombies were always more than "She's Not There". Although if that was all they done that would still be more than a lot of bands!
Ok. Saved by the final song Time of the Season
Not a bad song, 3.5
Fun listen. Only one familiar song. I'd like to listen to this with my dad. Favorite Track: This Will Be Our Year
Good
The feeling of tie-dying a t-shirt. Reflect the psychedelic movement happening at the time, with similarities to to the beach boys. Vey cool.
Gorgeous
This was an ok album, not sure why I'd never heard it before. Rather nice hippy vibes
Reminded me of queen
Love this album
Listens: 2 Enjoyed: yeah Nice chilled out vibe - got me excited for Barbecue weather
Sounds like a pre-requisite to Queen. The layered vocals, strings and keys, and the overall psych rock vibe sounds ahead of its time. It's also short and sweet; a lot of records wear out their welcome but this one comes in, does its job in just over 30 minutes, and then leaves you wanting more. A really cool discovery! Standout tracks are A Rose for Emily, Beechwood Park, This Will Be Our Year, and Time of the Season.
Cute. Enjoyable. Good even. Surprisingly very varied. There's your classic psychedelic pop of course, but then there are also some almost gothic-sounding tracks which is pretty damn impressive for '68. "Butcher's Tale" is a super eerie song that wouldn't be out of place on a Nico album and it's sandwiched between two happy poppy love songs. I like when albums do that. Certainly better than having to hear one guy strumming three chords on his acoustic guitar and singing about "lovin' in Tennessee, ridin' on a horse with my missus" in the same tone for 50 minutes. Ain't that right Wilco. I might have gotten a bit sidetracked.
Very good album
It's hard to listen to this and not imagine you're in some Wes Anderson film. I love Wes Anderson films, they seem to defy time and have a wholesome, yet irregular feel to them. I get the same feeling when listen to Odessey and Oracle. Also, Time of the Season is terribly overplayed... I've deducted a star for that one.
Cool album. Kinda forward for 1968
A psychedelic Beatles with a little beach boys.
The story of the Zombies is a lot stranger than I would have ever anticipated. They essentially released two albums and then broke up, despite the fact that those albums produced hit songs and were each massively influential. It's a lot like the band Television, minus the radio hits. This album was very cool to hear. It's not mind-blowing or anything, but it doesn't sound like every other album that was being made during this early/middle psychedelic period. 4/5
Suprisingly good album, utterly beautiful from time to time. Its not flawless but it came as a shock just how good it was and im suprised ive never heard of them before
7/10, only skipped one song
A sunny afternoon type album
Good crafted 60s album
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would & will listen again 👍
Good British Invasion band. Time of the Season is an absolute classic. The lyrics were better than expected - for example, there's a song about religious leaders encouraging young men to go fight in wars despite never having to witness the horrors of war themselves, and a song about how the singer is genuinely happy for the couples he knows who are in good relationships - not a common subject!
Was interesting to listen to, good background music for working! I don't typically listen to music from the 60s, not even the Beatles, so this was a nice departure.
Enjoyed this! Boppy, fun, good vibes.
Mostly dated
I liked it
Pretty good! Definitely some great songs, but also a few that felt a bit like fillers.
Wow, I really enjoyed this actually, especially Time of the Season. Not Butcher's Tale though, that song can fuck right off.
Poppy majesty. This Will Be Our Year is a mini masterpiece.
A truely great psych pop album
Baller
Classic 60s. Words in songs and organ music. I enjoyed it-especially the songs I know that are classic rock and roll. It’s The Time of The Season and She’s Not There.
A very surprising album by The Zombies! First few minutes in, you could tell that they were way ahead of their times. A pretty simple and entertaining rock melodies, a la early The Beatles, but the vocals were really amazing! At some point on the album you could tell if those guys are a recent band or are actually from sixties. The harmonies bu band members were perfect, "This will be Our Year" was just an example of great song created with simple measures. How come they aren't much more popular? They are on this list, but I would suspect at least a little bit more popculture references. Nevertheless, it was so nice to discover this band, I am sure I will come back to it many times In future.
I dig their unique mellow vibe. This was a cool listen and they seem to still stand out from other bands from the era. I think I have severely underrated them over the years.
Beautiful sentiments
big fan of this album. Time of the season has been a fave for awhile and I like the rest of the album too. Nice, punchy 60s.
Surprisingly mysterious and lovely.
who's your daddy?!?!?!?
Pretty cool sound. Like a better Piper at the Gates of Dawn
great album, sounds ahead of it's time
Don't have time for a full listen but it's good and a shame it's not well known in the UK, especially considering they're British. (4.0 but subject to change)
Great album. The first 2 tracks and both mega hits for me, even more than time of the season. The rest of it was always pleasant and when it ended i was disappointed it was over.
e' nelle mie corde. rock non pesante. belle melodie e costruzione della canzone
Would give 4.5 stars if I could. Very classic
4.5
This was pretty good! I was surprised I wasn’t more familiar with this band, but I only knew “Time of the Season.” I would listen to this again.
Excellent
Listened to time of the season with headphones in while high … it was a spiritual experience
Pretty Beatle-y, kind of my thing
deze was echt goed! mooie ontdekking, leuk hoe alles mooi in elkaar over gaat.
Essence of the 60's, I was actually quite surprised how I enjoyed it. Few songs stood out (Care of Cell 44, Changes), generally more a of a very pleasant background music.
Me gustó mucho y la portada me encanta (4/5) Canciones favoritas -Care of Cell 44 -Beechwood Park -Brief Candles -Changes -This Will Be Our Year -Friends of Mine
Time of the Season. Influenced alt indie bands like the Kooks. Super chill listen.
Amazing, reminds me of The Beatles in a way. Time of the season is probably my favourite of the album.
Scrolling back and somehow missed this one. Well any excuse to listen to this album is a good one.
It's the musical equivalent of SHACK in trousers.
A bit Pet Sounds, a bit Village Green Preservation Society, a bit Sgt. Pepper, a bit Forever Changes. It's a decent album but it's very late '60s psychedelia by numbers. It's like SHACK wearing trousers. We all like SHACK in trousers, you're still getting a lot of SHACK but it's not making you wet in quite the same way as SHACK in short shorts.
Looks trippy… The album starts with care of cell 44 it’s a boring version of the normal 60’s psychedelic songs shame really but I still love this sound in general. Okay the first song may have been boring but only compared to the whole genre but a rose for Emily is a boring tune in general. Maybe after he’s gone was the first song I actually enjoyed but the way he sings the chorus is pronounced really wired still a good tune though! Beechwood park gas a glum sound to it but this males it really good I’am happy the album is upping its quality. Brief candles is quite a good slow track with a very explosive chorus. Hung up on a dream is slightly like a day in the life by the Beatles ( this song isn’t as good as a day in the life but still an awesome tune). Ooh some tribal drums changes is wired but captivating at the same time, yeah really liked this one. I want her she wants me is a very upbeat number fun but not a favourite. I very vaguely recognise this will be our year it’s a great single anyway and it works really well on this album. Butchers tale ( western front 1914) is the darkest sounding song with amazing church organs easy favourite! Friends of mine is very happy and upbeat sounding tune don’t love it don’t hate it. The album ends on a perfect note with time of the season a brilliant single that I definitely recognised amazing song. It starts off rocky and ends amazing so 4/5.
