Reviews (page 8 of 13)
Includes the hit "Time of the Season" which is one of the best songs in the album.
3.5 rounded down but had a really good time
Very 60s vibe. Similar to the Kinks or Simon and Garfunkel but not as good in my opinion.
Fav song: Time of the Season
This is a really solid album with a crazy story. Produced on the back end of a bad deal with a band on the ropes, the unthinkable happened. The throw away album turned into a runaway hit after the band had already dissolved. Released in the states in 1968, the album really shines as a produce of 1967, and would have been an excellent edition to the summer of love lineup of great albums (and it should have been there). As it turns out, it still delivers, but the rest of their career is overshadowed by this misstep. It is the Sliding Doors of albums, and I am just glad that we get to enjoy the music even if the band didn't fully ride the wave of their work.
60's Baroque Pop; heavy Beatles-influence. Not bad, but somewhat forgettable.
Pretty cool 60s rock
Not a genre that I personally like but I would say the songs are pretty OK in general. Could listen to them in the background.
I love Time Of The Season. I’ve never listened to this though. It’s pretty good. There are other flowery hippy bands that I like better. I’ll put it as the same as The Black Album.
Nice enough, I thought I would enjoy it more though. It’s between a 2 and a 3 for me
One of the all time great Hertfordshire albums❤️❤️❤️, perhaps the only one? Three stars.
A little better than I thought it would be. Still very sixties.
Started off amazingly Very peaceful and relaxing vibes but kind of got boring towards the end
Oh wow, some psychadelic rock that's actually kinda good? That's rare! I have complained time and time again about the overrepresentation of this era of music, but very rarely you do get an album that does stand out. I still think this is far from the likes of Hendrix or Pink Floyd, but there's still just about enough on this album for me to have come away from it feeling like I actually enjoyed it. In fact, I can easily see myself returning to this and it growing on me, and while one listen didn't make me fall in love with it, it piqued my interest enough to make me think it was worth my time.
Not bad.
Ei taaskaan se oma pala kakkua, mutta eipä tästä nyt hirveesti pahaakaan sanottavaa ol. mennään sillä keskikastin numerolla
aika piitles-vibat
Juu.
It’s a solid, good album overall. The whole record has a very bright, happy atmosphere, almost like a warm and colorful little world of its own. The melodies are pleasant and the songs flow nicely, which makes it an enjoyable listen. For me it wasn’t something extraordinary, but it’s definitely a good and charming album. Some tracks stood out more than the others though. My favorites were Butcher’s Tale (Western Front 1914), A Rose for Emily, and of course Time of the Season, which is easily the most iconic moment on the record.
A pleasant listen without ever really drawing me all the way in. The album sounds really nice though.
Besides Time of the Season, which is a total standout and a classic, the album is just the usual '60s sound, a mix of The Beatles, The Kinks, The Beach Boys, and others.
Most of this LP sounds like Kirkland brand Beatles. You can tell the era this was made in. Hints of the Monkees and the Beach Boys and Doors. I am sure there is some great cultural significance to this LP, but it sounds very basic for the era in retrospect.
A neat sound, but Time of the Season is the best part of the album. 3/5
Album jak smaczna kanapka. Bardzo przyjemny i odżywczy. Szkoda ze tak go malo (czasowo)
The Beatles lite, nice
Other than this album sounding like a blend of sgt peppers, early Pink Floyd, and the beach boys, I couldn’t put my finger on why it sounded familiar. The I heard Time of the Season.
Pleasant
Care of Cell 44 I Want Her She Wants Me This Will Be Our Year Time of the Season
favorite song: butcher's tale (western front 1914) + time of the season vibe: just off center of beatles mania with a little funk added rating: 60/100
Makes me think of early Beatles and Weezer (especially OK Human). Palatable but not something memorable.
This is #day574 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… "Time of the Season" rang a bell immediately. The rest? Late '60s psychedelic pop I wouldn't turn off if it came up on the radio. It was fun to learn that most of these songs were recorded in the same studio where The Piper at the Gates of Dawn had just wrapped, and that the same four-track machine was used for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day575.
2 X massive banger. 1 good surprise song. Kinda meh otherwise.
Psychedelic music has been so thoroughly engrained in our collective perception of 60s culture that it almost sounds like a parody of itself when done well - and this is The Zombies territory! It's well performed and written but it is almost such a perfect example of the genre it feels a bit stale. Time of the Season is a classic and so is A Rose for Emily, but it's not got much staying power for me. A product of its time and it is okay to stay there, if you ask me. I found the story about the "tour" for this album to be much more interesting than the music or band - check this out: https://www.buzzfeed.com/danielralston/the-true-story-of-the-fake-zombies-the-strangest-con-in-rock The kind of thing that could only happen in a pre-internet era - what a wild time to be alive!
2.9 stars. Only one notable track.
Don’t have much to say on this, it’s very 60’s and it’s pretty solid altogether.
Otro de los discos que más me han gustado de momento en su totalidad. Sonidos muy interesantes y avanzados para ser de los 60s. Mi canción favorita es I want her she wants me y es un trabajo que podría volver a escuchar perfectamente
I can’t believe I’ve never heard this whole album before. Nice!
I really liked one song and they had a sound similar to The Beatles and it was an enjoyable album. I would listen to it again.
3/4/26 - Listened during work. I enjoyed it and was surprised I didn't know more of the songs. An easy listen. Top Song - Care of Cell 44
One song was really replayable but the others were pretty dull
1960s brit rock with that happy and psychedelic feeling is something I have heard before and this band does it well. The mixing really shows how old it is though. Not music I like to listen to or seek out but not bad in and of itself.
The story about the recording of this album is more interesting than the album itself. "Time of the Season" is a classic, but the rest is pretty contrived psych-pop leaning heavily on style trends of the time - Donovan, The Beatles, Beach Boys... if I listened again I'm sure a Dylan tribute would rise from the swamp. It's not bad, though; not annoying or offensive or difficult to get through. It's nice, just not impressive.
Beatles and Beach Boys but make it boring
irgendwie anstrengend, aber auch irgendwie gut. aber wenn ich ehrlich bin, werde ich davon nichts regelmäßig hören, außer time of the season vielleicht ab und zu mal.
Time of the Season is a classic, the Zombies are an underrated band!
This is great. Very Beach Boys goes British
Ändå nice
I won't lie, with a name like The Zombies, I thought this was gonna be a punk album for sure. It turned out to be the exact opposite haha.
Didn’t fully click with me but I enjoyed the vibes
Didn't feel like listening to the whole thing. Has some songs that I liked but I didn't vibe much overall. Loving the album cover tho.
7/10
On first listen, the album presents a carefully controlled formula built around 60s baroque pop arrangements with subtle psychedelic touches. Most songs are anchored by prominent keyboard-led riffs, restrained bass and guitar, and vocal-forward mixes where the lead vocal takes precedence over instrumental flash. Tracks often begin sparsely before expanding in the chorus through layered, gospel-like backing vocals, a structure that recurs across much of the album. While this consistency creates a warm, nostalgic atmosphere and generally works on a song-by-song basis, it also becomes somewhat fatiguing over the course of a full listen. Lyrically, the album leans toward gentle optimism and romantic nostalgia, touching on love and loss without probing deeply, serving more to reinforce mood than to invite close interpretation. “Time of the Season” stands apart from the rest, largely due to its confident, groove-driven structure. The bass takes on a commanding role, carrying the song with a slick, almost hypnotic presence, while the warmer of the two lead vocal styles adds intimacy and personality largely absent elsewhere on the album. Here, the backing vocals function less as a surrounding cushion and more as a point of contrast, heightening the tension between lead and harmony. The track’s dynamic control, instrumental focus, and vocal balance elevate it far above the album’s more formulaic moments. Other songs occasionally introduce additional textures—organ flourishes, trumpet lines, and brief guitar solos—but few reach the same level of cohesion or impact.
care of cell 44: muy alegre, ns m dio vibes a los beatles pero ni idea realmente porque no escucho a los beatles JDJHKSJGH ironico yiaaa hasta ahora es cm super alegre, muy piolita
3/10 - pretty good
Strong beginning and end; meh middle section.
A pleasant late 60s album that doesn’t redefine anything but that doesn’t mean it’s not decent. It just lacks the cut and thrust of the rock-ier albums or the psychedelic elements that similar albums would incorporate. I had no issue listening despite a 60s heavy run.
Gave me a decent challenge this and maybe an example where first impressions can be misleading. The initial overly sentimental, soft, and floppy tone does take its toll. It has clear echoes of things yet to come musically in time, so a revolution of kinds, and therefore pretty impressive for the late 60's. It just reminds me of say the beach boys or that kind of thing where melody and careful harmonies are the star of the show. This seems more complex and interesting, however. It's an annoying conclusion as I don't hate it and have a reasonable respect for it but can't say I love it.
This is on the poppier side of sixties rock music. It sort of reminds me of an English version of west coast American bands like the Monkees or the Beach boys. It's that happy-clappy old school pop-rock sound with pleasant melodies and lots of singing in harmony... Not really my thing. The late sixties was obviously an amazing time for music, but this album lacks the prescience of other albums at that time, instead seeming to be very much stuck in its time. That isn't to say that this is bad, or devoid of good tracks. It's all pretty good and 'Time of the Season' is a indisputable classic. Just overall not edgy or experimental enough for me.
Whilst there’s nothing specifically wonderful about the songs Colin Blunstones voice brings something else to these baroque psych pop numbers. Real range and a massive sense of drama brings these to life
I really enjoyed this. Time of the Season is peak vibes
2,8 Highlights: Maybe After He's Gone, Time of the Season
This was fun but hasnt left enough of an impression for me to have either reviewed immediately after listening or have thought enough about it since to have really anything to say. The genre is intriguing it always sounds like a joke and maybe it is?
I think this was pretty much what I would have expected this to sound like, but I didn’t mind it. I did start to find the cheeriness a little bit overwhelming as we continued through
This is fine. They’re good at what they do but others have been better. I don’t think it’s particularly aged well, frankly.
Good
Puur vuur. Denk dat dat nummer alleen het omhoog haalt naar 3 sterren, verder ben ik geen heel groot fan en denk ik dat ik niet snel muziek van dit album weer zal aanzetten. FAVO: This will be our year, Time of the season
Pretty boring. Stand-outs - Time of the Season
Good album. Easy to listen to with good vocals.
In your heaaad in your heaaad
Coldplay left me well, cold
Rating purely based on Time of the Season
There were parts of this album where I feel like I wanna roll my eyes, but ultimately it's not bad music. I feel like I might end up really liking it if I had a better understanding of the lyrics.
Pretty standard 60s psychedelic pop with an absolute all timer of a final track
Good fun album! 6.4/10
Surprised I'd never heard this one before, although recognised the final track. Quite rare to have an album with it's notable banger as the closer. Maybe the most '60s' album I've ever heard - reminded me of about every classic rock album from the decade melded together. Angelic voices and some lovely melodies and harmonies, but only a few truly memorable tracks. Enjoyable listen with a few wonderful tunes but something I liked more than loved.
Esta bien.
I liked the English folky vibes to it and it was nice to discover the source of a couple of classic tracks. I'm not sure how soon i would revisit it however
An album for its time. Great at that time, but a little dated.
Too pop for me
okayyy another 60s rock album, I've never heard of The Zombies before. My take so far is that overall it is better than the previous beatles album i listened to, and that maybe because seems more cohesive? I think that an album can be diverse and want to mix genres but personally the beatles was too all over the place for my liking. BACK TO THIS ALBUM, i liked Care of Cell 44 and Time of the Season on first listen, which seems to be the top songs for this album. I listened to this album twice, and I think i saw the appeal of A Rose for Emily and Friends of Mine. in terms of album, more cohesive but still not passing mid range.
for such an interesting name, it's kind of similar to the Beach Boys. Not bad, i guess
A nice '60's period listen, started out strong and definitely hit a lull in the middle with sparse instrumentation and monotone vocals. Sidebar, I love the album title and artwork! 3/5 stars.
Fun with a beautiful airy quality. Nice melodies. Fantastic bass sound. Interesting lyrics. Vocals should be more front and centre.
It sounds like the Beatles got together with the Beach Boys to make a psych rock album. I enjoyed it. I also have to give credit to the band for closing with the song that would become their biggest hit, at least in the US, don't see that too often. Also wild to throw in an anti war song in the middle when nothing else has been anywhere near touching that subject. 3.5 that I'd round down for the sake of this experience cause it wasn't good enough to get a 4.
57/1089 If you want some 60s psychedelic soft rock slash baroque pop and you're allergic to the beatles or the beach boys, this is completely fine. I can see it being amazing if you like that kind of thing, or boring if you don't. Oddly the best 2 songs are the first and the last. I do wish I could give it 3.5 because it's too forgettable/not my thing to be a 4, but it's definitely slightly more than a forgettable mediocre 3.
It's hard to judge music like this. I rarely find myself gravitating towards these late 60s joyous rock bands. There were a handful of interesting production decisions that give the album a lot of character, but I just don't think its for me.
60s rock à la Kinks
Pleasant memories of my parents. Love the hippie dippie acid rock of the 60s
Time of the Season famous song !!
Care of Cell 44, Maybe After He's Gone, Time of the Season
60s
I love This Will Be Our Year
‘Maybe after he’s gone’, ‘time of the season’, these are the tracks I think are the best from this album.
It blows listening to this, becuase I really want to love it more than I do. Not that it's bad, its proficient and I really like a couple of the tracks, but a lot of it isn't for me.
It's above average for an album from this time but I don’t think its anything crazy special. Enjoyable as background music? Yes. Really that good if you spend time analyzing it? No.
3+ Stars (9/15)
good!! not much options though
I had heard this will be our year ages ago and for some reason thoughts that they were like a 90s or 00s cutesy indie band. I had also heard Time of the Season and assumed they were a 70s folk rock band a la mamas and papas so a little surprised to hear them on the same album. I loved the story behind this especially the fake Zombies and I see why it has a cult folllwing I just didn’t love it that much and thought there was a lot of filler. Probably a 3.5 but meh
cool album cover
Kinda groovy, some were good some were Boring
Good album, glad I listened. I do have a soft spot for psychadelic rock.
kay
This is peak 60's psychedelic pop rock. That's not necessarily a good thing. I listened to this and while I didn't dislike it, I could barely be said to like it.
A few nice songs but wasn’t really my jam.
I felt zoned out and bored throughout the album. The music wasn't bad but it jsut wasn't for me or the current mood that made it just ok background music.
Bitlesi xd
One of the better albums in this genre I’ve heard so far, but still not really into it. 3 for Time of the Season
It’s sounds very similar to the Beatles in the same era. To the point that it might have been intentional. “Time of the Season” is a little bit of an exception and it acts as the prefect closer. 2.7/5.0
beatles but american (worse) with a sort of doors-y swagger, beach boys lite harmonies, and this sort of proto-echo-and-the-bunnymen fruity (non-derogatory) alt girl flavour profile thats very fun and weird and attractive. unfortunately i dont think the album ever measures up to the high of Time of the Season. good stuff tho 👍
Rating: 6/10 I think it’s decent. More like The Beach Boys than I was expecting and some good tunes. Mono remaster mix was nice and I’ll try to give this one another listen at some point
Brief Candles is an earworm. Album sounds cohesive and has great instrumentals.
The Beatles but not The Beatles? Pretty decent.
This album was way better than I was expecting! I thought it was going to be old hippie noise, but this was a really good group of songs! I was also surprised when I recognized This Will Be Our Year, a song I recognized now is a cover by OK Go.
care of cell 44 - 5/10 a rose for emily - 4/10 maybe after he’s gone - 6/10 beechwood park - 7/10 brief candles - 4/10 hung up on a dream - 7/10 changes - 5/10 i want her she wants me - 4/10 this will be our year - 6/10 Butchers tale (western front 1968) - 5/10 Friends of mine - 3/10 time of the season - 5/10 this album felt honestly pretty bland with overall basic production. nothing much to this album but very impressive style for a late 60s album. psychedelic pop was not widely known and i applaud them for that. this music doesn’t necessarily resonate with my taste but overall bland as i said. overall album rating: 4.9/10
I thought I would enjoy this a lot more than I did...
Meh it was okay. Probably wouldn’t listen to it again tho
Pretty boring for a band called The Zombies. British bands from the 60s are vastly overrated.
Very (British) 60s. Very harmonised, clean vocals. Lots of piano... the better songs also add guitar and drums. "Changes" reminds me vaguely of highschool choirs. Not my favourite, just nothing really going on in it. Highlights: "This Will Be Our Year" - I know this one! Didn't know this was one of theirs. It's a nice little upbeat bit of cheese. "Butcher's Tale" - not my favourite song but I liked the fact that the instrumentation differed... I think it had an organ which is pretty novel! Overall I thought it was easy to listen to, if a little samey. Didn't blow my mind, didn't hurt my ears. Low 3.
Pretty good.
I do not forsee enjoying this as much as I did.
Pleasant.
Gives Beatles vibes lowkey a banger
Beetles esc type thing pretty good overall
ENJOYABLE
Very 1960's but still OK. I heard elements of The Beatles and Pink Floyd, and there were other tracks that I seemed to recognise the style but couldn't figure out exactly who I was thinking of. Interesting to listen to but not one to add to my play lists.
Finally all caught up. Nothing stuck out really, but it was a nice easy listen, and obviously time of the season is a psychedelic classic. I love "she's not there" from their previous album too
3.5
Good album with one. killer tune.
It wasn't bad but not my mood maybe. I need something newer
Rose for Emily and This Will Be Our Year stick out because they’re so much more interesting than most of the other tracks on this album. Makes it classic but crazy how different they are and the rest seems like filler. Time of the Season somehow became the song of an era. Or at least of the era as presented in movies. How is this the last track?
- Time of the season
A fun album start to finish. Each track compliments the previous. Nothing bored or annoyed me on this album. I will revisit this album on the porch on a summer evening. I think that's where I will really connect with it. Favorite Tracks: Friends of Mine Time of the Season Maybe After He's Gone Care of Cell 44
It's fine. Again, a little boomer-ish for my tastes. Not bad, just sounds a little anemic to me
Lots of Beatles/beach boy vibes Time of the season sounds like stand by me 3.5
Bubble gum pop from British Invasion. Lacks the weight or grit of other bands from the time. Not a bad listen, good background music. Time of the Season still sounds fantastic. The rest varies.
First of all, the remaster here is doing a lot of amazing work. That said, there’s a lot of psych-pop perfection, but it only holds attention for about half the songs. It’s a masterpiece of its time, but its not a masterpiece overall.
Timeless sound
Ah, another of those 'misunderstood classics' so beloved of the critics! It's not a bad album, but I'm not sure it's indispensable. Nice baroque pop with a dollop of psych whimsy.
1. Care of cell 44 - interesting start to an album 2. A rose for Emily - this is the theme song for a show I’ve watched? I think? Also an interesting song… 5. Brief candles - Ok we’re picking up ok! 9. This will be our year - I love this song 10. Butchers tale - wow this song sucks ass. Way to ruin the momentum. 12. Time of the season - a great song. They are very inconsistent Wow this album is not great. This song was not popular when it came out and it gain popularity later. They got it right the first time. ⭐️⭐️💫 2.5 stars Would have been 2. But track 9 and 12 gave it some points.
it's a 3 right now but idk if any higher.
Time of the Season - classic. The album is of its time. Uni-sound '68
Some great songwriting and beautiful tunes. Unfortunately the remaster (2008?) m sounded terrible and sucked the joy out of listening. I’d love to hear the original mono vinyl
Knew some songs
The Beatles but not The Beatles? Pretty decent.
Very cool record. The big hit “Time of the Season” is mesmeric and timeless. “Beechwood Park” also a really good one. The entire record has a cool, haunting but jolly mood to it. Engaging vocals over gentle instrumentation, with some psych influences. Will revisit this one in the future.
★★★½
I can hear the chamber pop sound that inspired a generation of indie artists years later, and you can hear the influence of Pet Sounds and maybe Sgt. Pepper’s, but overall the album doesn’t really hit me, especially in the first half. This Will Be Our Year and Time of the Season saves this album for me.
to be honest...wasnt a big fan. i think that im not huge on 60s music, i find that its slightly too soft for me. i did enjoy a few songs on this album
Time of the Season is a remarkable standout track for what otherwise feels like a less adventurous album when reviewing in 2025.
Seemed Beatles adjacent, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many songs I actually knew. Impressive album in terms of how many hits are still played today.
This is my 500th album(it seems like I've been on this journey forever, and I'm not even halfway through it yet). This is a psychedelic rip off of The Beatles. Favorite Track: "Beechwood Park".
Overall, not a bad album, it has somewhat of a Beatles vibe, and it's alright having it in the background while doing other stuff.
This was fine. It didn't blow my mind, but was good. A solid 3. It got stagnant imo Liked Songs: "Care of Cell 44" , "Maybe After He's Gone" , "Beechwood Park" , "Hung Up on a Dream" , "I Want Her She Wants Me" , "This Will Be Our Year" , "Friends of Mine" , "Time of the Season"
Nice vibes, again. Time of the season works as always.
I'd hoped for more "Time of the Season"-type stuff on this, but it's still enjoyable. "Maybe After He's Gone" and "Brief Candles" stuck out for me, and the rest is solid ("This Will Be Our Year") when it doesn't veer into cutesy ("Friends of Mine"). FUN FACT: I saw the Zombies at SXSW on a bill with punishingly loud noise-rock band A Place to Bury Strangers. Those were the best kind of SXSW shows.
At The Villages Florida they have outdoor speakers in all the public squares piping this type of music in constantly, relentlessly, and perpetually. Not the worst music and I’m sure I would have been into it at the time but then I would have heard zeppelin and Hendrix and would have been like f this.
It was cool to listen to some mostly new songs!! Could definitely hear the similarities between them and the Beatles.
A Rose for Emily felt just a little toooooooo personal. The piano throughout the album reminded me of a lot of hits in the 2000s like bad day and nine in the afternoon. Time of the season remains one of the sexiest goatiest songs ever.
I'm having a hard time deciding which score this should be. It's "eh" so 3/5.
Beatles esque
I would just much rather listen to a Beatles record
Not bad
Decent
I thought this was going to be heavy metal and not beach boys. Alright though
Daecent, like if The Doors and The Beach Boys had a lil baby and he cute
s'alright
Cool sounds
big 3
Very Beatlesesque album by 60-70s English rock band. Really good harmonies that add depth to their music. Fav: Time of the Seasons
I like this better than I had anticipated. It was a fun album
What a cheery album. It's all very upbeat and smiley and almost impossible to not smile along with. I like it
Great example of the rating deflation as we get deeper in this list. If this was in the first 10 albums I listened to, it absolutely would have been a 4. But while I enjoyed it, the middle got bland and the good songs just aren't great enough to warrant a 4. Strong 23.5 that just missed out - 60s! Strong start! - Very 60s but kinda hard to place - The harmonies! - Some bland Beach Boys / Beatles songs in the middle - On 2nd listen, the lyrics just don't hit. This one just missed being a 4
This will be our year is a classic, cool vibes
classic 60's pop. haven't really explored their dark side yet.
Typiskt 60talsmusik för mig, det är bra. Time of the season har man ju hört massa gånger men hade inte kunnat säga vem som gjort den.
Time of the season is such a great song. The rest of the album was good, I kind of got a beach boys vibe a few times in the melodies
Groovy Kinks soundalike
Amazing combination of musical styles from baroque to jazz. Some of the lyrics seem a little dated but the melodies are mostly stunning. Time of the Season is well worth waiting for, but doesn't overshadow it's album-mates.
okey
It was pretty good. Seems perfect for a certain vibe.
This is a classic 1960s album, with pop and psychedelic elements. It's an enjoyable listen, and was a bit advanced for the time, but feels somewhat dated now.
Kul! Aldrig fel med lite 60-talspop, har nog inte hört hela albumet från start till mål innan heller. Ingen låt är dålig, men lite mellanmjölk är det ibland. Topparna tho, Time of the Season tex, en jävla låt asså. Stark trea.
Litt rart å høyre rett etter Beach Boys, men Time of the seasons er jo kul!
Not bad overall. 3/5
Really like this style of music, for me though it's a once and I while type of album. 3/5
Odessey and Oracle – Review There’s no denying the charm baked into Odessey and Oracle. The Zombies were clearly reaching for the same kaleidoscopic universe their peers were exploring in the late sixties, and you can hear the ambition in the harmonies, the baroque touches, and the whole pastel-psychedelic glow of the record. But for all its color, it never hits that upper stratosphere of songwriting or invention that the era’s greats managed to bottle. Most of the album drifts by as pleasant, slightly blurry sunshine pop. It’s enjoyable, sometimes even lovely, but rarely gripping. The melodies are nice; the ideas are there; the execution just doesn’t quite push hard enough to make the songs stick in the long run. Then comes “Time of the Season,” which frankly operates on a different level. That hypnotic bass line, the air and space in the production, the call-and-response—it’s a moment of pure lightning. The problem is that the rest of the album never gets within shouting distance of that magic. In the end, I respect the record more than I love it. It’s a fascinating artifact from the psychedelic era, and it has its charms, but outside of its one undeniable classic, it doesn’t leave a deep imprint. A solid, perfectly fine listen… just not a life-changer. Rating: 3
Enjoyable album but really only one song on here that is unique enough to warrant a second listen, that song being Time of the Season.
Would not buy
60's as hell. didn't appreciate this as much as I did in my teens when I was very into organ-heavy rock to smoke weed to. That said, the live version of this album is really cool to listen to as the band broke up before they could ever polay it in its entirety. Time of the Season is a legendary song that will find itself relevant amid a number of generations of Americans.
Very 60's lol! Enjoyed it quite a lot, wish i was at the beach somking a blunt.
Quite a pleasing listening experience. Nice psychedelic touches and I could hear where influences on UK indie bands has come from
Tunes are very whimsical but the album overall just doesn't grab me all that much. It's quite fun sounding though.
Like a preview what is coming in the 80s and 90s with Brit pop.
good
It's a good album. It's very much Pet Sounds and Pepper influenced, mostly Beach Boys. It's 1968 and the Beatles are releasing the white album, every one pretty much going back to a raw style of rocknroll, so I guess this might be the reason this wasn't much of a hit. 3 for me.
Starts strong “Care of Cell 44” & ends even stronger with “Tine of the Season”. The middle however left a lot to be desired.
Pleasantly suprised by this album. Poppy , happy ‘60s type melodies but sound quality was much better than other releases around its time
Lots of objectively good stuff here, I suspect, but I wasn't in the best mood for it, unfortunately. Instead of appreciating the understated production and the harmonies and stories, I felt a bit impatient for something to really sock me between the eyes. Time of the Season is definitely the stand-out but still didn't "sock". My favourite Zombies song remains She's Not There. Which is... Not Here.

Enjoyable listen, quite upbeat and happy. Reminiscent of beach boys, easy to listen to.
A lot to unfold with beach boys ripoff, church instruments turning mid track into a daft punk precursor, experimental stuff and an unmatched diversity. Listen when chaos is needed
Better than 99.9% of all the other psychedelic rock that came out around this time, but this genre doesn't do it for me. 3 stars for fantastic recording quality and sound engineering.
Inoffensive and easy to listen to. Perfect background music when guests are around.
Classic 60’s vibe
I know the Zombies by reputation as one of the great bands who never really were, and the story of the 2 fake The Zombies (see top review) is mad, but after listening to this I am underwhelmed. There's some nice stuff in here, and an odd preoccupation with death (maybe appropriate given their name), but the presentation, with the soft vocals and kitsch organ backing, doesn't really do it for me. It was the last song on the album but I recognised Time Of The Season and nothing else. (A bit sad not to hear their best song, She's Not There, but if it's not on this album, it's not on this album).
Alright just some basic 60s music
Delightful classic beach boy esque 60s music
This has always been their best album, and I loved it much more in my youth than I do now. These days, it feels surprisingly dated—more so than many of its contemporaries. Still, it’s a great record that carries a lot of nostalgia for me. Three stars for its quality and the memories, though I doubt I’ll put it on again unless someone else does.
Easy listening, very few skips, however, very few standouts. Time of the Season makes me feel like i am walking through the sixties and for that, it is my favorite track of the record.
Beatles-style band, also has a bit of indie feel
Pleasant listen that has quite sophisticated production. Always perceived and enjoyed the haunting tone to many of their songs, including 'A Rose for Emily' and of course 'Butchers Tale'. The Zombies offer a distinct sound that allowed them to standout even during the height of thr Beatles. Top Tracks = A Rose for Emily & Time of the Season
Nothing that happens on the first 11 tracks lead you to think this is the same band that made "Time of the Season," which is an absolute monster of a song. The rest of the album is more Brian Wilson-adjacent, which means it was never going to be totally for me, but I ended up enjoying my time with it, though I doubt I'll return. Several songs feel overwritten and overproduced. But there's a spark of something I'm responding to; those parts that probably influenced elements Bowie and Queen.
Very stylistic of the time period. Melodic songs that are piano led with a steady drum beat. Reminiscent of the Beatles without the drugs. Middle of the road for me but these songs would never last in today’s music scene. Time of the Season was a nice surprise at the end of the album.
I really liked this album. LIght and fun, very enjoyable listen. Feels like this was the bubble gum pop of the hippie era.
Just beatles
Cool album. Sounded oddly both current & vintage. One generational banger and it's the sound of the late 60's. You can tell they did more psychedelic sounds and possibly even loosened their ties & undid a button (not 2). These guys would have made great monks. Cool nerds honing their craft.
Honestly not sure why this album is so critically acclaimed. The only stand out song for me is Time of the Season. The rest is pretty bland, late 60s British rock. Not bad but not special either.
This is fine. 3 stars, nothing too special here.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Enjoyed this but expected more, found myself losing interest. Finishes on a high
Just very 60s. I get the impression these were the indie softbois of their day.
On kivaa beatlesmaista meininkiä. Näistä tykkään
Good album!! There were several great songs!
OK
Time of The Season is a 10/10, rest of it is like solid 6/10.
If every song had been like Time of the Season this would have been an easy 5, but honestly most of the majority of this album was too hippy-psychedelic concepty for me. Like a low rent Sgt. Pepper's album which I'm sure heavily influenced this. It's a shame because a lot of the Zombie's other hits are really good.
6.8/10
Love Time of the Season. The rest of the album is OK. Not jazzed.
I am skeptic to the beatles and all the other modern heavy rock sponsors like yes, genesis, hendrix. In 2025 the seed means nothing, so I only appreciate the hit - Time of the Season, Who's your daddy?
lush instrumentals and bright harmonies. delightful and whimsical 60s british psychedelic pop. despite moments of repetition, with several tracks seeming to blend into one, the distinctive sound is nostalgic and evocative of the era; go-go boots, mod dresses and the zebra crossing on abbey road came to mind. 3/5
day 2: i’ve never listened to a beach boys album but this is what i imagine it would sound like. some nice harmonies and some interesting musical sections (trumpet in there somewhere?), but overall does nothing ambitious or outside of the box. not bad not amazing
eh bacaninha, bem feito e menos psicodélico do que eu esperava mas nada demais não. divertidim!!
Mycket trevligt men helheten nådde inte hela vägen till en fyra. Time of the Season är en toppenlåt
Ganska behagligt sound!
Pretty interesting uses of stereo - a relic of the time, I suppose. Some nice guitar on some songs, but the piano and vocals are obviously at the forefront. Was “Time of the Season” a single? If so, it seems like a weird choice!
I've always found Time of the Season to be a decent song, but an entire album in that vein is a little much to take. However ... I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I was driving through rural Oregon while listening, and it was a nice soundtrack for that. And I'll give them an extra star for their crazy story.
This sounds very modern, very indie, very not my jam in larger than one song doses. So, historically interesting and no doubt meritorious, but only getting 3 stars from me because I'll never listen to it again.
Fluffy and light. 60's / early 70's soft, almost psychedelic rock. Okay to have in the background.
The Zombies’ sound blends elements of The Beatles, The Monkees, The Beach Boys, and at times, early pieces of Queen. The harmonies are impeccable and they cover a wide range on this album - from classic barbershop-style pop to ominous psychedelic rock. Not really ‘fuzzy guitar’ psychedelic rock, it’s more the organs, glockenspiels, and woodwinds kind. I had high hopes for this album after the Young Rascals album I reviewed a few weeks ago. This album is a perfectly cliche late 60s pop/rock album, but it leans more pop and that's not what I wanted. “Time Of The Season” is a classic, and there’s a reason it’s used so often in tv/movies to quickly establish a scene in the late 60s, but beyond that, there's not much here for me.
Better hippie stuff than normal!
Was really vibing with it until Butcher's tale. Def was not a fan of that song
For reasons I can’t put my finger on, this agreed with me more than other late 60s music that is stylistically similar.
An album of songs that are in the album.
An uneven ride with a few gems. From the plink plonk to the WAHHHHHH, it’s not bad, not great, but I do love the softness in his voice.
A standard rock record with some high moments
An important record to be sure.
Time of the Season is a good song and this is a good recording. The rest of the record is fairly middle-of-the-road 1960s psychedelic. Lots of tiny cymbals and isolated vocals. Doesn't do it for me.
Pretty cool album! Nothing to write home about imo but well worth a listen
At its best when it's talking about a dude being eaten by flies and writing jail letters, at its worst when it is trying to be a rip off of The Beatles. But still, it was better than I thought it would be, especially since this isn't my type of music typically.
Somewhat interesting. Not what I'd expect for a group called The Zombies.
it wwas something. the big song at the end saved, i think. not super notable otherwise, but nice
The album became good with the last song. Everything else just sounds like a standard 60s band.
I thought this was going to be a straight up Beatles knockoff, but it has a pretty unique sound once you dig in. Things did feel repetitive towards the back end though. Over all I liked but didn’t love this one.
Inoffensive, slightly interesting. Very Beatles-esque but without the avant-garde-ness. Not bad, but not my cup of tea.
Time of the season was the only song I really loved but its ok
03
I don’t think it holds up
few really big, strong moments. Has aged better than a lot of records from this era
chill. 60s. psychedelic.
Of all the things I was expecting with that combination of band name, album name, and album cover, Beatles was not anywhere in my top 5. I was expecting something closer to Jimi Hendrix's flavor of psych rock. It's fine, but really nothing noteworthy, or notable for that matter. I've heard this sound before in like 5 different bands from the same year. Changes was a good standout, though.
There's some albums that have cover art that I just want to have in my home as decoration. This one is a strong candidate if I can find it. The album? It's got that classic late 60's sound. But with better production value. Do I like it? It's fine, but nothing I'd play on purpose. But I also wouldn't take it off the turntable early.
Time of the Season is an all-timer for me. The rest of the album was pretty good, but nothing to write home about.
not really for me
Fín, nokkur góð lög þarna en alls ekki það góð í heild sinni.
There are a lot of 1968 albums on this list. Not an album I know or have listened do but everyone know the giant hit single "Time Of The Season". Not sure how well it stands up today, it sounds dated. "Care of Cell 44" and "A Rose For Emily" are nice songs but forgettable. "Maybe After He's Gone" was solid. "Beechwood Park" feels like it would be a good candidate for a updated remake. "This Will Be Our Year" was a nice little ditty. I read all about the album but I wasn't as impressed as the writers were. It's good, has one all time great hit and some decent filler but not a T1001 album in my book. 3 stars
I think I want to give this a 3.5 just because I liked it more than pet sounds but not that much more? Idk I just wish there were some more options and this was out of 10
I liked this one! Super chill.
Enjoyed it.
It’s like The Beach Boys are trying to be psychedelic and British but only have half the talent. It’s not bad it’s just meh
Some classics, but some a little dated. Amazing for an album 58 years old!
good
This album was very light going, not aure it was my kinda vibe though.
The genre of the album is boring to me, but I appreciate the little stories the songs tell. The lyrics aren't your generic pop song.
Appreciated the different take on that classic 60s psychedelic pop sound. It just didn’t quite come together for me.
This happened and I was there and I would return to this again
Dear Diary, This album is a high three for sure. But then I ate a burrito bowl while listening and almost fell asleep in the middle of the work day. .
ok album. has a very recognizable song.
Nice album 7/10
Eh. Not sure what the big deal is just because there's a single iconic song.
This was disappointing for me. I had higher hopes. Still, it was good, I liked it more on second listen, and I have nothing bad to say about the songs.
It's an alright album, nice to listen to, time of the season really stands out as a single I didn't feel the other songs stood out as much.
I like Time of the Season, and the rest of it is on a par. Not a bad album.
😁
Classic rock goodness
Produit de qualité. Écoute un peu pénible. 3.49 étoiles.
Boring
Great
3,5
Too Beatles-esque for me but still some cool stuff here
Quite a pleasant album to listen through all the way. Nothing stood out as being stellar but it managed to keep fairly upbeat and enjoyable the whole way through.
me ha parecido bastante igual todo el album, aunque es chulo
solid, if generic british invasion fodder time of the season is a classic though
A couple solid songs but not exactly my taste
Is it gay to say Time of The Season is sexy? I don’t want to bang this dude, but someone surely does. Feels like an appropriate descriptor. All time song. Anyway, immediately regretting giving Billy 4 stars, because I gotta go 3 here and I’d rather listen to this I think. Main reason it falls flat is because when psychedelia misses the mark it misses big. Interesting that this sound/movement had already jumped the shark by ‘68. Some great songs in here for sure though.
I love Time of the Season so was excited for this. Other than that song, I liked but didn't love pretty much everything. Feels like a pretty generic 70s baroque-influenced pop/rock band. Some nice harmonies and fun instrumentals, but nothing special other than Time of the Season
Sweet little jangle psych album that feels incredibly dated. Beautiful harmonies, intricate phrasing, and a general ease to the album. But, it feels so simple. I think I'll listen to Pet Sounds instead.
Time of the Season and 11 other related tracks
Extremely 60s, but consistently good songs and interesting music make it a great listen today.
The three songs I already knew (A Rose for Emily, This Will Be Our Year and Time of the Season) are all great but the rest of the album is all a bit of a psychedelic mush to my ears.
