Well done but a bit fatiguing. Cool to hear the roots of a what is a very familiar sound
Arise by Sepultura (1991) Wow. Brazilian death/thrash metal with virtuoso performances by drummer Igor Cavalera and lead guitarist Andreas Kisser, and solidly paired overlay by bassist Paulo Jr. and rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera, this driving, pounding descent into nihilistic rampage is breathtaking. Blinding tempos and growly, yelling lead vocals by Max Cavalera lack variety, but hey, that’s thrash. If the first few tracks become boring, hang in there. The sixth track, “Altered State” and seventh track “Under Siege (Regnum Irae)” are nice compositions, the latter including some modest theological reflection on the hypostatic union, but with predictable results. Lyrics consist mostly of litanies nasty noun phrases, ill-connected, but all equally harrowing. One must include the ‘bonus’ closing track, a cover of Motörhead’s “Orgasmatron”, because it was included on the Brazilian release, even if not in the UK or US. It’s anti-religious kerygma that seems unaware of its internal contradictions, but it’s the only track on the album that actually has a message. Cool, but don’t let your mother catch you listening. 3/5
I listened all the way through and enjoyed what I heard, but all the songs blended into one enormous song for me.
Wasn’t as bad as I feared, quite enjoyable really but I wouldn’t usually go for this genre. Nevertheless, it helped me clean the floor so 3*
There are some good songs but I wasn't that in to it as a whole.
Better than Roots for sure. Not very memorable but I enjoyed it while listenig.
Very very solid. Arise goes straight ahead from beginning to end, with a few interesting twists and turns. The album is a bit flat to the stylistically uninitiated, but I would gladly pick it from a thrash lineup.
Quite enjoyed this one, and they are an interesting band to read about. Orgasmatron and Dead Embryonic Cells stood out to me. 3 stars as I would be happy to listen to them again but realistically won't make any effort to do so
There's a lot of communication going on between band members that keeps the tracks constantly evolving with sicks riffs and rapid drumming. In the midst of it all lies serene melodies as in "Desperate Cry". We got a mix of mostly thrash metal with some fast-paced death metal that serves as a good introduction to metal of the era, during a time of dramatic transition between 80s predominantly thrash and the style splits of the 90s. It's still true to form, which is both a blessing and a curse. There are lots of good songs, with others having their impressive moments, but they're not putting anything new or interesting to the table. There's no reason for me to replay this album over other thrash or death metal albums unless I suddenly remember a tune I want to revisit. Also, following the first few songs felt pretty weak, although I'm quite partial toward "Altered State," and the bonus track "Orgasmatron" was actually a decent cover. Favorites: Arise, Dead Embryonic Cells, Desperate Cry, Altered State
I like metal. I don't really love metal, but you can play me a metal song and I'll probably enjoy it. Thrash is probably my favorite genre, but I don't love metal so I don't listen to it much. Arise is a thrash album, it's a good one. Nine songs, all of them good songs. If you're thinking in terms of the big four, Sepultura is definitely the closest to Slayer in terms of their style of thrash. However, I think something Slayer did that was important was actually make each song stand on its own. Every song on Reign In Blood, for example, is definitively its own track that also stands well in context of a full album. Arise kind of felt like nine solid songs that blended together, with nothing standing out or being notable in almost any of them. By the end of the album I was almost forgetting I was listening to an album, and when the deluxe tracks from Spotify started I just didn't notice because the end of the album had no indicators of being such. It's a very middle of the road album because of this, and picking a best and worst song is a pain in the ass because of it.
Ok, but doesn't add anything to what Metallica achieved 8 years earlier.
It is good, but it didn't particularly grab me. Wore it's influences a bit too much on its sleeve. Not enough to make me want to leave and go and listen to Metallica, but it was still there.
meh
Of all the 'metal' bands in the 90ies Sepultura was the only one I kind of liked (I'm putting 'metal' in quotes because I don't know enough about the genre to be able to specifyy the correct (sub)genre). To be more exact I thought Roots Bloody Roots, which played on MTV a lot, was a bit of a banger. I'm usually not really looking for aggression in my music consumption but that song seemed to be able to channel aggression into a monster of a hooks and the addition of the Brazilian percussion elements made it musically more interesting (to me) than its peers. This sounds like the band that made Roots Bloody Roots but with a dozen or so songs that are not as interesting as Roots Bloody Roots. 5/10
Not as in my wheelhouse as Roots, just seemed a little more basic and thrash. Not bad, definitely enjoyable, but I've heard better.
This kind of grew on me, like a mediocre Ministry album. A couple of the tracks are great, but not enough to push this into four stars for me.
Spotless metal riffs and drum sequences, palatable vocals Arise, under siege
Rating: 6/10
Album art is a really good representation of what you'll get with this album. All the songs seem to blend together and I think that's the point. Solid metal, but not entirely for me
Thrash metal. Assume Power Trip had Sepultura as a major influence as there are major similarities. May just be the nature of thrash. Im sure it was a game changer back when it was released but didn't do much for me, felt a bit samey
Mad vibes
Mal was anderes. Nie wirklich gehört davor.
I can see why white kids in 1991 thought this was pretty cool but not my thing
Hard one to review, because I don't have much to compare it to. It felt a little repetitive at time, but that might be because my ears aren't tuned to death metal. I liked the drumming in parts though. Rating: 2.5/5
Some great riffs and lead guitar work in parts but the constant blast beats and wanky solos get a bit much after a while. The growling vocals is what really holds it back for me though, that style of vocals is just beyond the cusp of what I can tolerate when it comes to metal. Best track: Desperate Cry
Thrash metal, kinda stuff that used to be on Tony Hawks back in the day. Actually don't mind it but not sure how it made it to the album generator lol. Actually really enjoying this further through haha, it's like the stuff that has influenced Terror. Easy a 3/5, more like a 3.5 tbf
Septallica 👍🏽
its pretty intense. made it most of the way there. i dont get angry enough for this music, but its almost a 4.
Pretty good. Too much metal recently though
Dubon metal, ca brasse pas mal. Desesperate cry est ma prefere. 3.20
Another genre I never really came around to. I respect the speed and precision of the instrumentation, and there's clearly more than average going on musically here. Typical of the genre I found the lyrics ho hum, and the vocalization does nothing for me.
I believe the actual musical ability of the band members is really good. The guitar riffs and the rhythm are great, but the lyrics and the singing leave much to be desired. Solid, but not for me.
I love the sound of heavy metal in the morning
Not my style, but done well? I like Altered State the best, I think.
Ok
2.5 - decent
I've heard of this band before, but don't recall ever hearing anything by them including anything on this album. While I like some heavy metal, death metal is really not my thing. I think a lot of it tends to sound the same. There was some amazing drums on this album and some really great guitar riffs, which I would expect from a death metal album. The vocals are tough though. They sound a little bit like if Cookie Monster screamed at you for 45 minutes (I'm hoping for no Cookie Monster nightmares tonight). This is another genre that I really just don't know anything about, so it's hard for me to say whether this album is worthy of being on the list or not, but it's definitely not my thing.
I’m particular about heavy metal so this isn’t hitting for me
Just not a fan.
I just don't really like growlmetal with superfast metronome drumming. Very boring.
Eh. You could tell me this was one long song and I’d believe you.
90’s Death Metal ⭐️Substraction
Hard pass. Not for me.
Decent metal rock, a little heavy for me
Bad timing for Sepultura. On a normal day their eat the microphone, pounding version of metal would be a turn off after two songs. On the day Arise popped up on the list, my soul needed something far more tender, mindlessly fun or blissful. Sepultura did not fit the bill. Out of fairness, I will offer no rating, and try to head back for a listen at a better time.
Hard listen… not for me. 1. Arise 2. Dead Embryonic Cells 3. Orgasmatron
Nope
Didn’t listen to all of it
Hated it less than the other thrash/death metal we rolled. However, my headphone volume was VERY low.
Not really my thing. I didn't realize these guys were from Brazil though. That's pretty interesting.
I can totally appreciate what’s going on here. But it’s not for me.
Uhh, not the worst. Good melody. The singing is too abrasive amd aggressive for me, but i get thats the idea. One song at a time is fine. A whole album was a lot
I am not edgy enough for this...
i mean fair enough most metal albums sounds too similar to others to me embryonic cells & desperate cry absolute bangers nonetheless
Music is good, I don't like the vocals only being in one style throughout.
Genre mismatch for me
I can say it's well produced, but I just don't really enjoy it. The songwriting is fine, the tones are nothing special. It's just another metal album. 2.3/5
Nope
Alright not too bad. Was expecting worse
I do not understand how anyone over the age of 15 can think this is a good thing to listen to. I couldn't make it through a single track. I guess they pass the "sing from the heart test" but it just doesn't hold any enjoyment for me.
Not my favorite album but I have respect for it. Cats love toys set to these beats. Cats might be more metal than we think.
Not as bad as I was expecting.
1.5/5 I don't mind some thrash metal every now and then but a whole album is a bit too much for me. I'm probably a bit harsh with my rating but it's not an album I'll revisit. Maybe a couple of songs.
Ugh. Would the "singer" just stop already?! The percussion was good. Man, that was a long hour but I persevered. 💪🤕
It's like a parody of itself. I have no wish to suffer this album again.
It’s very cool that my brother knows the current singer of this band- Derrick Green- but speed/death metal is not my thing. I love punk and screamo and post-hardcore stuff but I just can’t access heavy metal. So I can’t really review this fairly…
It's thrash metal.... I can't tell if it's good or not but it's interesting.
Do we really need two Sepultura albums on this list.
Liked this more than I thought I would. Appreciated the low end vocals and guitar and relative tightness/discipline of the songwriting.
Just not for me
let's give heavy metal another shot. hope it's better than slayer. and it better be in portuguese so much for heavy metal in portuguese. it's fine? i dunno. not my jam not my peanut butter not my sandwich i'll give it a 2/5 because i care not to think about further and will not listen again.
Absolutely not for me. It escapes me why anyone would gain enjoyment from something that sounds like ‘an angry man throwing tools at a urinal while reading the book of revelations’. It escapes a one by virtue of some good musicianship, the drumming stands out. And I actually The highlight for me was Orgasmatron which had a bit of melody to it and then I realised it’s a Motörhead cover. I liked Roots when it came up too. Oh well
While technically good, with it's frenetic guitar and drums, the vocals are not my taste
1.5
2,5
Nootttt for me. I’d call this horse shit, but I’d hate to offend horse shit.
Would be great if they had a singer.
Music isn't bad, even though I don't like speed metal. Voice is awful.
No thank you. It's actually well produced and seems good bybthe standards of its genre, but there's no freakin way. Uh uh. Yuck.
It's just unfair, man. You have these guys honing their craft for years, getting their double bass kicks straight as a line, their screeches pitch perfect to a pterodactyl and their songs full of odd twists and turns... and still, upon hearing all that, my auditory system will simply filter all of it into a single blob of noise - 'metal noise', even. I love punk, I love noise rock, yet when I hear this style of metal, I am instantly transformed into some poor old-timer, waving his stick and screaming "it's all just noise!". These guys deserve a better audience than me, and as such I'll do them the honour of never listening to this again.
fav songs: arise riff-driven, punchy, intense 40/100
don't like this style of yell singing, but music is alright. super cringey edgelord lyrical stuff
Standard thrash metal. Kind of Metallica adjacent but I didnt really enjoy the vocals. Instrumentation was fine though.
2/3. Not my thing, but it was good gym music I guess. Drummer is off the charts though.
Oh I forgot to rate this after listening to it. Well, nothing much to say here. It was definetly an album I have ever listened. I think it was somewhere around the third song I started looking around if anything was going to change but the album sounded the same all the way through, not my cup of tea.
I'm listening via YouTube music and the first 2 tracks played with music videos, and I honestly just found the combination of music and video comedic. "Arise" featured a guy being crucified, while wearing a gas mask, overlaid in various ways with flames. It just tried so hard to be edgy that it gave me the opposite impression. "Dead Embryonic Cells" had basically the same vibe, but when the singer yelled "NO HOPE FOR CURE" I got this image in my head of a caveman, and then I kept giggling throughout the song at the angry caveman. The fact the whole band have really long hair and stand there whipping it about or having it dangling over their faces while they lean over their guitars... I don't know... how do you take this seriously. Anyway, moving on from the videos... I can't stop being amused by angry caveman. I misheard the lyrics of "Murder" as "same hand that feeds birds" and I was really confused why he was so angry about someone feeding birds. Had to look up the actual lyrics. As for actual critique, every track sounds the same; it's just fast-paced drums, repetitive guitar powerchords, and angry caveman shouting nonsense over the top - there's not enough difference between the tracks. I don't hate it, but I also really don't see the appeal. I find the lyrics pretty cringe, which is also why I can't stand a lot of the classic metal bands that people rave about, despite actually quite enjoying metal in general.
I think album does a great job of demonstrating why I dislike thrash metal. It's incredibly monotonous. I think some of the riffs are cool I just wish they weren't the same chord over and over. Vocals are samey throughout even if I quite like his style. I've never got on with *just* harsh vocals. Some wanky guitar solos here and there Despite all this I think they have a certain groove which I fundamentally vibe with. Very high 2
I enjoyed this at the beginning, the problem is that most of the album stayed inside that one sound.
Woah. And not in a good way.
Yeah, I don't think death metal is my thing. This is not demonic shit like Slayer, but it's a Brazilian dude yelling over hard beats and frequent switch-ups. I can understand that appeal a bit more, but the structure and execution of death metal is just too much for me to process. I can only do 30 seconds of it before I find myself lost on another planet with a tempo change and atonal guitar solo. Hey, I mean these guys are putting little tribal elements into the mix, but it's not enough for me to want to listen to this again (4/10, 2/5 on this scale)
A find it hard to be subjective and difficult to judge some of these albums. Do I hate all heavy metal, no. Did I enjoy this album, no.
People actually listen to this for enjoyment?
The drums sound like garbage and the vocals are too similar.
Not for me thanks!!!
Shit mix A little creative at times Mostly not that creative Repetitive In my opinion Feel like the band could be pretty good with proper execution and a mix that doesn't sound like cardboard
Thrash metal is angry. Groundbreaking as florals for spring.
Is this good? Maybe for this style of music. Not for general listening.
Blind album and artist. Brazilian Death Metal? I guess I won't be listening to this very much in the future.
Absolutely not my scene, but I got almost half way through without having the urge to switch to something else, so that's a good sign, I guess?
Could enjoy the music itself but death metal vocals are too abrasive for me
Disclaimer: this is not at all in my genre wheelhouse so I have no thrash metal listening experience to compare this to. While I do find some of the instrumentals to have a really satisfying groove to them, especially in good headphones, but the vocals are just unbearable. I appreciate something this new to me though and found myself often head-nodding to it, oddly decent work music.
I just really can't do it with these metal vocalists I'm sorry
Ahh, okay. Some serious grooves here, but it's just so relentless that for me, it wears out its welcome quickly, and the vocals are definitely not my style. I like my metal more melodic. Still, this is solid, even if I'll probably never listen to it again. Like the intro to Altered States was bad-ass, but then . . . oh well.
Good riffs, but an overall boring listening experience. I'm aware that Sepultura has better records, though I do not consider myself a fan.
I have nothing against this kind of music. I just can’t tell when it’s supposed to be good.
Not for the early morning I had
Not my fave but interesting
morose
While I'm really glad there are people out there exploring these areas of music, its not a genre that I can listen to for more than a few minutes at a time!
Heavy Metal
Later stuff is what I dig more
Fav: Desperate Cry Least Fav: Arise Yeah I think death metal just isn’t for me. I can tell they’re talented tho so it’s not them it’s me
Tja, dat is metal
instrumentally good monotonous can't stand the vocals
I had another album from these guys about their Brazilian roots, and I said the metal was the worst part. This was all metal. 3/10
2.5/5 - I think this is probably good for what it, but just doesn't work for me
23/12/2025 1. arise - dramatic start..... more visceral scott giger vibes from art and continuing with fleshy electronic sounds. liking so far. guitar just started and i do not like metal i am not in for a good hour. this is what i feared when i had to listen to iron maiden. the lyrics are nice ig but the music is not my thing at all, can appreciate the guitar at times though :) 2. dead embryonic cells - the intros are great, even if i don't like the rest lol. even though the music isn't my thing, it still sounds good. will never like metal vocals though. lyrics kind of emo..... 3. desperate cry - loving the intro again. doesn't immediately start with banging guitar!!! just started now. drums are great at the start, as well as the guitar. literally cannot hear the bass though :( this is probably really great for people who like metal, but i don't know how i'm going to get through an hour of this. 4. murder - all of these songs sound basically the same to me. to me, this is just angrier emo music, which i also don't like..... 5. subtraction - found out about halfway through this song that it's 40 mins without bonus tracks, cannot wait for it to end sooner. oh my god i can hear the bass. guitar just started again halfway through typing that. 6. altered state - wind at the start reminds me of threads or eraserhead. again, cannot fault the intros, but don't like the majority of the song. liking the echoing on the vocals. ending was nice :) 7. under siege (regnim irae) - quieter start, liking it so far. drums kicked in, bit loud but better than the rest of the album. guitar just got loud again, but slower than all of the other songs. lyrics are nicer. loving the effect on the vocals again. still not my thing, but enjoying it (more than i can say for the other songs). liking the slower, more distorted verses, like a more energetic swans, but the rest of it sounds the same. 8. meaningless movements - liking the screeching guitar parts. nothing else to say. cannot wait for this album to be over. 9. infected voice - thank god i'm onto the last song. this is probably a really great album if you like metal but i just don't. some of the intros were nice before it started with the constant noise. all of the songs just blended into one another. even though i haven't enjoyed it at all, i can understand why people who are into metal would like it, which is why it's getting two stars and not one lol. if i had to pick a favourite, it would be under seige, but i did not enjoy listening to it. will be immediately clearing my brain with 60s pop.
I hate giving these metal albums low ratings. They are probably really good metal albums. I just don't like most metal.
Give how much classic Metal albums were being released at the time, the inclusion of this one in particular seem a bit random. It's not like the book ever strays from the more mainstream accepted (and anglocentric) metal. Not really my thing, but a welcome inclusion. Key tracks: Arise
I have been known to like metal but I find this sort of thrash quite unengaging to listen to. Very technically proficient but not doing much for me.
I always like these albums for the first couple songs, then I just get so bored of it and my head starts to hurt. Little something called variety never hurt anyone but I guess that’s besides the point for artists like this
I feel like thrash metal is a genre that is only meant to be enjoyed in person in the middle of a massive mosh pit. In album form it really just all starts to sound the same and drag after the third song. While I haven't been to a thrash concert before, I've been in a lot of pits at hardcore shows and I love the vibe. Just not an album I must hear.
This thing has some of the nastiest riffs I've ever heard in metal, but the album tries to make the riffs the main part of the song rather than a building block of the song, and the rest of the song feel a bit half-assed and in some cases unengaging.
Some Ok songs, can get a bit repetitive at times.
I enjoy the occasional metal like megadeath or Metallica, but this just kinda sucks. Guitar seems a bit amateurish, drum is just double bass to death, and every song just sounds the same. Could not listen through full album.
Nothing I would ever want to hear again. The second and last Sepultura album. I can't relate to this kind of music; it's just fast kick drums, fast riffs, and screaming. And all sounds the same at some point.
i had a preconceived notion about this album because of my experience with the other sepultura album on this list, but to my surprise, i actually didn't mind this one. definitely more of a straight forward thrash album, which i have the tendency to like more than death metal stuff. the instrumentals are pretty energetic and sufficiently thrashy. the vocals are still not quite my thing, but are not as over the top growly as a lot of metal tends to be, which i am not a fan of - but here it's not egregious and works fairly well. it's not quite my cup of tea, but it wasn't the worst way to spend 45 minutes.
My experience with metal began in the late 1970s, giving me a view of the genre's evolution, notably the emergence of Thrash and Death Metal, styles that I've witnessed live but am not a dedicated enthusiast of. What I primarily look for in Metal are hooks, a touch of melody and groove, along with compelling dynamics (light and shade). Speed can be fun when used right. A crucial dealbreaker for me is the presence of highly distorted or growling vocals, which I find off-putting. Despite acknowledging some good guitar work and riffs, my overall experience with Sepultura's "Arise" was one of quick indifference, and I won't be returning to it. For me, the main flaws were the monotonous, unimaginative drumming and the constant onslaught of noise and power, which collectively robbed the sound of any desired groove. The vocals were also unengaging. As a whole, the album felt tediously long; a low point was realizing I was only three tracks in, at "Desperate Cry", just before "Murder" began. While I can respect the album's merits, and why some folks would enjoy this album, it was ultimately not for my taste (2/5 stars). 1 "Arise" (2/5) 2 "Dead Embryonic Cells" (2/5) 3 "Desperate Cry" (2/5) 4 "Murder" (2/5) 5 "Subtraction" (1/5) 6 "Altered State" (2/5) 7 "Under Siege (Regnum Irae)" (2/5) 8 "Meaningless Movements" (2/5) 9 "Infected Voice" (1/5) Total - 16 Average - 1.78 159/1001 88/159 albums reviewed were new to me.
Oof, thats a tough one. I listened to some thrash metal in my life, and i always wanted to listen and focus specifically to Sepultura, since i heard about it quite many times. I was quite disappointed by raw and primitive music compared to other genre representatives. Nothing caught my ear, or left a mark.
I don’t like metal and this isn’t nearly as groovy as roots. It’s a no from me
eh, not my thing
I was so glad when it was over.
No
brazilian metal punk, hmm, not my cup of tea picks: arise, dead embryonic cells
Not interesting to me. Sorry Sepultura.
Not my thing.
oooh big man with big voice yells about death there are multiple times throughout this where i wished i was listening to metallica instead. même en faisait les sudokus quotidiens dans l’autobus à 22:30 ce n’était pas plaisant comme musique. pas fini. ça dure 1h. je suis plus capable
Tiresome
Not my type of music
How much double bass pedal is too much double bass pedal. This album is the answer to the question. I don't mind metal, but it took the concept to the extreme. All songs blurred into one; a rapid, confusing blitz. Much preferred Megadeath - I had an idea what was going on.
3/10
sepultura is a pretty badass name for a metal band. that said, hardcore metal is not really my genre. it's fine from a musical perspective, better than a lot of metal on here, but not for me, 2*
I don't like Cavalera's vocals or lyrics. I like the idea of melding of hardcore punk, maybe a little bit of death metal and thrash; but I think a lot of the time it sounds a bit confused. I can see why people argue they would belong over Anthrax or Slayer in the thrash big four. The strongest parts of this album for me are the flourishes of world music and industrial embedded into songs like Desperate Cry and Subtraction - which are pretty fleeting. If this was a few years older, it would feel incredibly significant.
I assume this is a good example of this type of music. I will skip the rest much more quickly.
Idk what’s so special about this that’s it’s on this list
Not my vibe
I guess the album got "better" in its second half, but please don't make me listen to it again.
Are you mad? I feel like you're mad about something. Do you wanna talk?
I can appreciate the technical skill, but it's hard not to feel like all the songs sound alike. I guess it's not for me.
Not today, thanks.
Meh Not in the mood, ive liked a lot of the metal, this just felt meh.
Except for the slower down song “under siege” every song sounded the same to me. Loud, fast, irreverent. It could be cathartic if I was pissed I guess.
Another metal album that did not convert me to liking metal. There were snippets of instrumental stuff that I didn’t mind, but then the scream-singing would come back. I had to listen to this in two parts. I couldn’t do a straight through listen
The only way I could tell that the song was different was by the track listing changed on the display. Repetitive and mostly monotonous sound. It got saved from getting a one star was near the end of the record it actually had some beat changes.
Death metal not for me, solos altered state Criminals in uniform
The older I get the less thrash metal interests me. Never got into these guys back in the day and I'm not getting into them now.
I think this is as generic as industrial metal can get. crank up the distortion and start singing poorly, nothing here you havent seen before.
I did not dig this album. Plus it didn’t have the Braziallian influence of Roots so who cares. Why did we need 2 albums by these guys?
Not as bad as Roots but not good
You honestly can go read any of my other reviews of metal albums to know how I feel about this one. I just don't care, and I just can't get into it. It seems like demands these high stakes, and I just can't get there with it. I don't care, I don't believe anything about it is sincere and that it's all for show, and I just don't want to listen to it again. I didn't hate it enough to give it one star; I would if I genuinely understood it and still didn't like it. But I didn't, which leaves me thinking I must be missing something. And I probably am. Two stars. Standout Track: Subtraction
I can get down with the headbang. I didn't mind this, and it was actually a lot of fun to listen to -- but after a while it all starts to sound the same, and it can really wear you down. Pretty generic thrash metal album -- kind of wish there was something more distinctive about it if it's gonna be on this list. Side note: fucking A+ awesome album cover. Metal covers are always the bomb. Fave songs: - Desperate Cry - Subtraction - Altered State - Orgasmatron (lmfao) - Intro (Arise Sessions) - C.I.U. (Criminals in Uniform)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'd work out to it
I don’t have enough death/trash metal depth to distinguish this from other acts or say if this is particularly good, but I didn’t hate the experience.
I don’t at all like the metal growl-style vocals. Or the muted sound of the high-speed drums. The rest is decent though.
I went back and forth so many times on whether this was a 1 or 2 star album for me. Rationale for 1 star was that it was suuuuuuch a slog, and broken up into a few listens I kept not wanting to go back to finish. 2 stars because I can appreciate in parts that even though it’s absolutely not for me it’s technically a pretty good album. Parts of this were okay. Would never listen to this again.
Beste lied: murder, substraction en meaningless movements Veel hetzelfde

3/10
Not my style, but definitely unique in the genre of death metal.
They listened to And Justice For All. All treble. Would love to know how loud they recorded this. Doesn’t seem to have the same virtuosity as Metallica. Definitely not bad but this can be gotten in many places. And I think I like more melody in the vocals.
Not my thing, but Kudos to the drummer. 5/10
Brazilian 90s metal. Death/trash metal. Their most popular album. Fast and aggressive to me. Not melodic, a bit monotonous for me.
Just not a metal guy. There were a couple moments that got my head nodding but mostly I was stressed out
Got to love metal to like this. Not my favourite album of theirs
Metallica if they weren't pop
I remembered them from last time and decided I would listen on YouTube music so I didn't add them to my Spotify algorithm. I hate metal, so this is bias against the genre in general. If you just read the lyrics they are good. Last time I mentioned they repeat themselves a lot and I didn't notice it this time. Lyrics felt deeper and more thought out. Some songs have solid guitar and some killer guitar riffs. But then there is just this one drum they keep beating over and over in Arise, Desperate Cry and Infected Voice. It is grating and just one sound over and over that gets to me. The voice is still graveling and screaming. It is just so loud all the time. As far as metal goes this is a 4 for me, it actually has some moments of decent sound but its still metal and I just can't with it.
It has some cool guitar moments but no thanks.
After catching up on an album of a completely different vibe that was hard to get through because of the vocals, my ears officially feel assaulted and I kind of want to cry. I don't mind the hard rock/heavy metal instrumentation, and the lyrics offer meaningful commentary on society and soul searching that’s as relevant today as ever, but the "I am singing heavy metal in a dark creepy voice" voice is super annoying and overshadows the positives of the album.
Seemed generic rather than stand-out to me; poor lyrics, too.
Not a big fan of the vocals or the Standard Classic Metal Drumming, did enjoy the aggressively anti government track, 2.5 rounded down
A Brazilian thrash barrage that does everything it's supposed to do, which is exactly the problem. Fifty-plus minutes of precision riff-bombardment and apocalyptic barking that make Slayer sound like a lounge act—admirable, exhausting, and (for some of us) utterly joyless. Igor Cavalera’s drums gallop like a mechanized army, Andreas Kisser’s guitar lashes out with militarized flair, and the whole thing never lets up long enough to let a little air—or personality—creep in. “Desperate Cry” dials back the bludgeon just enough to suggest what dynamics might sound like in their world, and “Under Siege (Regnum Irae)” flirts with groove before the wall of sound returns. Bonus points for titling a track “Dead Embryonic Cells,” which, much like the album, is as subtle as a tank through your living room. Not my scene, but I respect the artillery.
Liking it more than I'd expected! Still, will likely never listen to it again. Does make me want to see thrash metal live though
Not bad but a little too Metallica/Slayer for my taste.
Not my jam
Sometimes bands need 5 attempts to mould their sound and release a great album. Unfortunately this is Sepultura’s 4th.
For metal, maybe it’s good. I don’t know. Painful to listen to. 2 is generous.
Being thrash metal, the album is very high-tempo and intense. The performances are very technical, and the album feels relentless in its intensity. In terms of instrumentation, the drumming is very demanding technically, and it’s very well done. That being said, the constant double-bass drumming gets a bit old after a while. The guitar parts are great, pushing the intensity, while also sounding great. The vocals I didn’t like much; Max Calavera’s growl-ish harsh vocals can be a bit much. Lyrically, it doesn’t get too complex, but the topics are very grim. The “Subtraction” and “Altered State” combination back to back was for me the best moment of the album; I liked the bass solo in “Subtraction”, and the tribal drums in “Altered State” were interesting too. I felt like here they varied more their sound. While I can see its merits, particularly technically, I can’t say I liked it as an album. I might revisit a couple of songs if I’m really in the mood for some heavy thrash metal, but not much more. Nice having a Brazilian band here. And I hated the cover.
The economy, precision and race car gear shifts merit applause, yet no single riff called out past the tropes, which do not entice me, the monotonously clean distortion, the growls, the absurd theatrical seriousness, the made-mud-in-my-trousers rhythms. “Roots” maybe shows they were getting bored of this prescribed palette, thankfully. It is a genre that invites the listener to improvise lyrics - “stay off the llama farm!” - which is jolly.
Ok for metal I guess.
This feels like a well made version of something I really don’t like so I’ll be nice and give it a 2. This music does less than nothing for me.
I didn't hate it, but I find straight thrash/death type stuff kinda boring.
The incoherent roaring style of heavy metal and all the songs sound more or less the same.
Sepultura seemed to be greatly influenced by Master of Puppets, except Metallica and Master of Puppets write better songs. I found Desperate Cry and Orgasmatron to be the two most interesting songs on here and one of those songs wasn't written by the band. This can all sound very similar after a while and the songs can blend together. It definitely "rocks" but I don't know if I am able to notice the diversity of the sound this album is supposed to display.
Nice but too much adrenaline for Smoluchowski theory
Experimental Thrash Metal? I failed to hear anything experimental. Is sounded like Trash Metal. I wasn't aware the album had finished, as the song playing straight after sounded exactly like then, but is was by a band called Exodus. That's the problem with this genre, there is little room for experimentation when you are hammering your instruments as fast as you can. Maybe that's why I like the Wedding Present, they did fast better. It was ok, but it didn't make me want to delve deeper into the genre.
As with the other records of this genre, it's all about the drums and guitars. Not sure why, this felt more generic then some of the other metal records. The MotorHead cover was the best song of the album.
I liked this one a little bit more than the last Sepultura album we had. But I didn't like it.
Goodness gracious. Liked the atmosphere. Heavy metal lyrics are always a bit cringe to me. And some of the solos were just a bit limp for my liking.
I feel like I have already heard this album just by looking at the album cover.
Explosive metal sounds and hatred based lyrics are not my cup of tea. I can see the calling though and how influential this could be.
I didn't hate it, but definitely a little too thrash metal for my tastes. Excited to get Roots though!
Perhaps if I was an angsty 14-year-old boy in the nineties, I would be able to listen to this all the way through. But I'm not, so I just can't.
Not my cup of tea.
I could not make it through 45 minutes of this, but it's nice to see that Cookie Monster has found a healthy way of working out his frustrations. We could all take a lesson from him.
Metal album from I group I don’t know. I often need to spend time with albums of this gendre so I’ll revisit and re review
Instruments get a 4* but vocals are a 1*.
Rhythmically interesting, but everything else is just a bit bland, which I definitely didn't expect from a metal album.
Emo Metal
No. 309/1001 Arise 2/5 Dead Embryoinc Cells 2/5 Desperate Cry 2/5 Murder 2/5 Subtraction 2/5 Altered State 2/5 Under Siege 2/5 Meaningless Movements 2/5 Infected Voice 2/5 Average: 2,0 Just not my kind of music.
Not really for me I’ll say. I liked Desperate Cry in points when it was running at half speed. I can’t stand incessant double bass drum kicking. 2.2/5
Good album. I particularly enjoyed Me And Julio By The Schoolyard, and Run That Body Down.
Not going to get an obligatory love ballad in the middle of this, am I?
Not doing this a second time.
Thought every metal album would be a 1 as I can’t stand the genres, but giving this a 2 as I actually didn’t hate it!
I hate to sound too uptight but the album is too anti religious for my taste. I prefer Chaos AD as that album is much more of an attack on human institutions and corruption rather than divinity itself.
Thing about some types of metal is ... the songs sound so much alike, I can hardly tell when one ends and the other begins.
A ton of great riffs, but maybe a little light on song structure.
Guys why are we yelling
Angry driving music.
Very samey album, and a couple of odd tracks such as Orgasmatron which sound so odd.
Maybe there will be days that I'm in the mood for a thrash metal-a-thon but today was not one and honestly, they aren't a regular occurrence. Rapid bastard drums and growly vocals just can't make up for what I will admit is some cool guitar riffery in a few places. And it's too. Damn. Long.
Album 628 of 1001 Sepultura - Arise (1991) Rating : 2.5 / 5 Almost as much of a mess as the last one I did from them but a tad better. I like a bit of metal but this is just too much for my liking. A lot of noise with a few nice guitar riffs and some decent drums.
enjoyed the hard edge of the music, but man, those lyrics...

#Daily1001Albums The shouty, gravelly vocals really aren't my thing. There’s lots of gnarly guitar mixed in with extreme guitar wankery. I enjoyed parts of it and in its context I can see why it’s seen as a classic. Ultimately, just not my thing
Not into the metal guitar and screaming.
Not my preferred style of music.
Lie down, more like. Actually, it wasn't that bad. Some of the more melodic moments gave me pause for thought. The tribal drumming has a certain appeal. But it's still metal shit, right?
4/10…trash metal
I struggled a bit with this one. It has a few moments. Mostly I thought it sounded like they were going for that early Metallica sound and style, just not as good. 2.5/5
As someone who doesn’t like metal music, this did very little to change my mind. The drums were cool though.
best metal album ive heard so far. but not for me
I'll say the same for Arise that I did for the last Sepultura album we had over two years ago, it's okay but it's a little one-speed for me and there's a lot of metal around this time and especially since that's more nuanced and interesting than most of this delivers. Orgasmatron is easily the best song on here because it does something different and interesting, on its own not enough to lift it above a 2 though.
Good metal, but the production is a bit muddy, and I prefer more melody in the vocals.
Probably would have liked it when I was fourteen but I just can't stand the drumming. And why are the lyrics on metal albums so shit? Get a little joy in your life, fuck me dead they're from Brazil, how can you be so depressed and nihilistic in Brazil? Scandinavia I could understand.
A genre typical album in a genre I don't typically like. Not for me and I don't feel I can properly judge it. The tracks all sound distinct from one another, which is a good sign I guess when thrash metal often blends into one to my ears.
I like some of the driving guitar riffs and more melodic bits that they sprinkle in there, but it's not really my bag in general. If the vocals weren't so harsh I would probably like it more. 2.5 rounded down.
Not sure how this demon squad got 2 albums on the list. More of the same from Sepultura...heavy death metal with some good guitar/drum work and semi-incoherent lyrics. Not as good as Roots but earlier in their development. I need a metal-buff to give me the significance of this band in music history. I'm not really getting it although still not as bad as Beyonce...2.
While I would gladly skip this entry I enjoyed it more than the prior Sepultura album. A little more grounded with seemingly less demon wretch (though still a healthy amount). I'm not really into thrash/death metal but I guess if I had to point to an album this is probably the best representation I can think of. It's got a lot of the standard earmarks I would associate with a down-the-middle death metal act as far as I can tell and was overall not the worst listen. While speed metal artists are admittedly very skilled, I find it hard to differentiate between the various songs. They all appear to follow a pretty similar structure with limited variance between the drums, riffs, and over the top lyrics. More power to you if this is what floats your boat. For me, it's fine in very small doses but I just don't feel like I'm missing anything by passing on this genre for the most part. Not sure why Sepultura gets more than 1 album on here but evidently I needed to hear them again before I die. 1.66 stars
I audibly sighed when I saw this was today's album. Yesterday I had Metallica's Master of Puppets, and after listening to that aural turd, I really didn't fancy more of the same. Fortunately, however, while this genre isn't my cup of tea at all, this was significantly better that Metallica's crappy offering. I didn't like the death metal vocals, there was too much growling and not enough singing, but the music had some variation and points of interest to accompany the chugging guitars. It's not something I'd listen to again, but I didn't hate it, like I hated Master of Puppets.
I appreciate the skill of the musicians and kind of actually dig the metal music, but I just can't with this type of singing.
I started it 5 times to be honest. So much noise and bam and bum. I mean, metallica has some slow songs in between, you get to hear Turn your page etc. These ones were drang a drang all the time
A one trick pony, if playing hard (to like) is a trick. It certainly was no treat.
Meh. Not my jam.
I can’t figure out what this has to say. The intros are the best part then it reliable turns into an exercise in how fast palm muted power chords can be played and some decent bedroom guitar antics. Sometimes I get into it in a similar way I like electronic music, the rhythms and repetition but can’t find a meaningful connection to it in the end.
Not my style
Heavy metal is not my kind of music. But I did listen to the whole thing and I could see the musical talent on the guitar. Most likely will never listen to it again but it could have been worse.
Not really my jam even though I got into the music parts, but the screaming is a lot. Def can appreciate some thrash metal. High 2.
Not my jam

This is the second Sepultura album I’ve come across on this list. Hoping it will be the last. Not my favorite genre to say the least. But they must be wearing me down because I didn’t hate this as much as I did their Roots album.
Metal must be so hard on the lead singer's throat. Honestly the way metal bands sing is one of the reasons I'm not really into it. The other is that all the songs sound too similar, I can't tell them apart and an album ends up feeling like one hour-long song that I got bored of back at the beginning.
Not sure when the best time to listen to this would be? Probably as you descend into the pits of hell!
I can't even drink caffeine after lunch, because it'll keep me up too late, and I'm just supposed to listen to an hour of this? In all seriousness, this isn't my cup of tea. I prefer actual singing, rather than scream yelling.
I like the musical sounds but not the vocals. The 'yelling brashly' vocal style just isn't for me. 2.5
This is more or less exactly what I thought all metal was when I was younger. There is a reason I spent a lot of years saying I don't like metal, and that is because I really am not a fan of this kind of sound. There are elements to the music which I do enjoy, which probably do get picked up in other metal subgenres. The vocal style though.... oh lord. That's the part I really can't get past. I did not enjoy this very much but at least there was a fun guitar solo on "Meaningless Movement" and I liked the drums in "Desperate Cry" so it still rates a 2 stars. Just not a sound for me.
good for them but I cannot listen to music like this!!
do not like, generously rounding up to a 'not for me' 2. music: hated. (⌐⛧_⛧)
3.89 rym so che questa musica dopo poco mi annoia molto noioso infatti 2/5
There are moments of intensity that impress me, but overall it just wasn't for me.
Would love to have been in the room when some of these songs were being written lol. 2 stars just for the guitarist who is shredding his life away back there.
Nope.
They want to be Metallica so bad
Despite loving metal as a whole, I just don't think I get on with a lot of thrash, especially from this time. There's something about the production which just sounds so flat to me, and it's not unique to this album. I want metal to be dynamic and powerful, but this comes across weak. I think it's a case of making everything 11/10 all the time meaning there's no real movement within the songs.
Tough album. This metal stuff is intense. I don't care for it. It's fun for a second though. **
Don't even get into metal and I know Roots is a better Sepultura album
Not for me
Singer really needs a throat lozenge
Not really my class of listening genre, but still a quality album for the type that it is. If it didn't have vocals, I'd like it.
Not gonna lie, was a bit of a slog to get through. i prefer more melodic heavy metal, I think..
p669. 1991. 2 stars. Well done of its type, but there is nothing here that hasn't been done before and better by Motorhead.
Uh
Still just not a big fan of this genre of music. This one was ok compared to most of these band types.
Thrash metal just really isn’t my style. I don’t like the guys voice, I hate how every thrash metal band has pretty much the same sound, it’s just some dude screaming into the mic while trying to make his voice sound deep and gravelly. They don’t do a very good job of it. The instruments all sound the same in thrash, you can barely tell what the guitars are playing, they’re basically just a rhythm section. The drums are the only bit that sound good. Overall this album was pretty meh, the lyrics were ok I guess, better than a lot of the other metal stuff we’ve had but still don’t love.
it's thrash metal & now I have a headache. not my thing at all. couldn't understand lot of the lyrics due to all the yelling
Better than Roots. I enjoyed it more by the halfway mark. Heard some echoes of Master of Puppets.
This did nothing for me whatsoever but it didn't annoy me, so 2 stars it is.
Only 1 listen, please
not for me
Play guitar and drums fast and throw in a bunch of lyrics invoking hate or sadness or the seven deadly sins and repeat nine times to make a classic metal record? 3/10
Awful angular sounds but somewhat compelling.
