Reviews (page 4 of 7)
It's impossible to be brazilian and dislike Sepultura. That being said... I really don't like death/thrash metal. I can appreciate aspects of the album and I'm genuinely happy I got to listen to it, considering I only knew "Roots".
9/11/25. Heavy! Drums and guitar solos are excellent. Thrash isn't my cup of tea, but this was a fun listen.
I enjoyed this and it was a good gateway to Sepultura, but it was kind of repetitive
I heard some Sepultura back in school and just remembered them as being loud. Nowadays, that loudness holds more nuance and appeal. This is also the first full album of theirs I've heard, and it's pretty consistent and energetic. There are some awesome instrumental moments here and there, but I can't say I got really involved into music at any point of "Arise". Looks like "awesome music, please delete vocals" is going to be my universal impression when it comes to thrash metal.
Was pretty decent for proper metal, need another listen when I'm in a ragey mood.
Quite cool, I can see it, but not for me.
A strange pick. The previous Sepultura we had is something unique and worth a listen by non fans. This one is perfectly adequate example of death metal but there is much more interesting ones out there.
This was great, genuinely enjoyable. Will relisten.
i feel like it's really good but just not for me sounds like it'd be really fun to play or to see live bailed after desperate cry because i needed to go to bed tho it was prolly my favorite of the three
Surprisingly good, a little long though
this is pret metal shit to be on this list. i have never been a fan of these guys, although any metal clique or group has someone that is a huge fan. but this is metal and their legacy is vast. theirs beginnings in the 80's was a time when punk and metal fusing was brand new and this album at the start of the 90's was the huge. its clear a shift is occurring on this record. being from Brazil was also a show of the genre traveling the world. the sound is so rounded and stylized that it stands out. the drumming to this day is phenomenal. title track as the opener is a good choice. obvs Subtraction is my preference, but there is a lot going on for the time. how fast and how heavy it gets, to see these shows would have been wild. the marathon musicianship is clear and unmistakable. Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Suicidal Tendencies, they are right there in that era of crossover thrash. is it punk or metal? who gaf. its almost 4/5 but not quite for my taste, (it would be if i grew up with it). special shout out to their early work and that this being their fourth album is incredible. and that cover is something out of a Dark Souls game, so that's great. most of it is fast, and after this the metal scene would move further away from punk into its own identity. Orgasmatron is fun and more like what i remember them as. its super political but that's fine, and that was the style of the time that the energy poured from.
i prefer this over the tribal one
It was fine. I dont really like metal, but I listened to the whole thing.
Decent enough but got a bit bored towards the halfway point. Don't think thrash metal is for me though. Can only handle so many palm muted notes before I tune out. Lacks the range I'd expect from a Metallica album to break up the thrash. Lyrics are a little bit shallow, very vague and tropey.
enjoyed this like i do most thrash metal: like a bout of diarrhea. it’s loud, propulsive, and a little cathartic. good in an intense way in the moment, but i’m never dying to do it again right after.
Matt’s metal enthusiasm inspired me to listen one more time. Definitely Doug it more the second time. There’s some pretty fun trashy moments in this album. One major issue is it’s super clean and sometimes that takes me out of it. I like my metal dirty.
Happy for the gen gracing us with some metal. Record rips, but nothin on here sinks into me. I prefer metal with some hooks, or a musical blueprint that fees like you were taken some where. Ebbs and flows. This one just grinds into your skull with repetition 3
Sounded like it looked, metal. Decent, nothing too special or catchy
Good thrash album, but I think it suffers from a lack of dynamics - changes in guitar tone, speed, vocal delivery and general songwriting would have made this album rate higher for me. I've heard Chaos AD is a better album, which I'll be sure to listen to.
This was kinda fun to have on while playing a dungeon crawler. I can appreciate it on the level that it's fun to be noisy, and there were some cool sound design moments, but I'm not sure I'd be able to recognize any tracks on this a week from now
rock on freaky bro
For a death metal album, there was a surprisingly amount of nuance, space and songwriting.
Had fun listening. Heard bloody roots before and enjoyed this about the same.
decent stuff
I love the sound of Metal in the morning! Sounds like victory!
Technical playing and makes sense to be on the list as an example of some thrash metal, but I'm too old for this now. Didn't regret hearing it once and no notes to make it better, I'm just not looking for this. Subtraction had some good moments.
Okay, interesting album cover. I've heard the name a lot through the years as a joke example of metal usually. Desperate cry is alright. Subtraction sounds pretty good. Yeah, this is fun and probably a great example for the spectrum of metal. Seems like a solid album of it's kind. I'd probably listen to this in the right road rage moment again sometime.
this is not my genre of music I like.
Really great metal! 3.5/5
Just sounds like slayer to me
It's just fine
An album caught between influence and identity Arise is a solid album—fast, heavy, and well-produced. On a surface level, it absolutely sounds good. But when you peel it back, I’m left wondering why this particular album deserves a spot on the “greatest” list. Let’s put aside the quality for a moment. Stylistically, the songs echo Slayer, Testament, and Venom to the point where I genuinely thought I was listening to one of them. That’s not necessarily a bad thing—it just means we’ve heard this kind of thrash before. It doesn’t break new ground. Where Arise does show glimpses of Sepultura’s own voice is in tracks like “Meaningless Movements” and the beginning of “Altered State”—moments where they step out of the shadow of their influences. Overall, Arise isn’t a bad album. But in my view, it borrows too heavily to be considered essential. Chaos A.D. and Roots are where Sepultura truly carved out their own identity—and those are the albums that deserve the spotlight.
Bueno
Turn it off! Not a metal fan here 🤭
I like metal. Sepultura is just okay for me.
Seems like pretty standard thrash even for 1991.
This is a style of metal that I neither love nor hate, but I have a hard time paying attention to it. The constantcy maybe?
Hearing the bass in metal hadn’t been invented yet in 1991, but this is otherwise one of sepultura’s best
Pretty damn boring, but thats just my taste talking. It wasn't bad at all. It's just not an exciting sound for me. There are absolutely amazing metal records, but this one just doesn't do anything special for me. Low 3
I'd argue that Chaos AD is better but that's just me.
This is a great trash metal album. Really well made. Just one star off (could have been 2 on a different day) because most songs follow the same recipe. It's a good recipe but sometimes you want a change of flavours. And it's just not as good as Roots, a unique album.
I think this was better than the previous Sepultura album we had, Roots. Even though this was made earlier than that it felt more modern, and overall better sounding. I thought there were some decent riffs in there, but since this really isn’t my genre I feel I have a very hard time judging this in a fair way. Just going to put a 3 on this since it feels most right.
It’s pretty clear that metal wasn’t the author’s favorite genre when compiling this list. A lot of great metal albums were left out, and some odd choices made it in. This is one of those odd choices. While the other Sepultura album on the list, Roots, was very good and interesting, this one felt like a fairly generic thrash metal album. I understand that Sepultura is highly regarded, but I don’t think it’s because of this album. As a thrash metal album, it’s good, but nothing particularly special. There aren’t many memorable songs or riffs. Personally, I enjoyed Roots a lot more.
Pleasantly surprised by the instrument play. Was not a fan of the singing style. If this was an instrumental album it would be better. I wish I could give a 3.5 stars. I feel bad giving a 3, considering -1 for the singing, but giving it a 4 would mean it is a 5 start album without the singing.
This isn't in my comfort zone of genres, so it's hard to evaluate. It was hard to listen all the way through as much of it felt like a very similar tempo with drum and guitar banging on in my skull. Maybe that's how most thrash metal heads want it. In the transition between "Subtraction" (track 5) and "Altered State" it was quiet for a moment and I literally had a sigh of relief. However some parts were interesting and I found my foot tapping along to some songs so it's not as if I hated it. Just not my taste.
Better than Roots Bloody Roots
It was a good album. Thrash and Death Metal is not really my go to but I listened to the whole thing and never once wished it was over (something I cannot say about every album on the list) but I really don't think I will play it again. I appreciate the musicianship if not the vocals.
Not really much of a metal fan but found this to be ok. Enjoyed the thrash nature of it and had some catchy grooves and hooks . Liked it more than I thought but definitely need to be in the right mood for it.
When I think of a heavy metal album, this is what I think of. The speed and technicality with which this album is played is amazing. The vocals are pretty much in line with you standard metal growl. This will not be for everyone and is not generally what I listen to, but the tightness of the sound is definitely something I can appreciate.
Surprisingly middle-of-the-road.
Favorite track: Arise. Overall score: 6.9/10
I prefer my metal to have some more melody than this
I would call this album pretty kickass, but not great.
No need for two Sepultura albums on this list.
La verdad es que me gusta más Roots, pero este no estuvo mal.
I liked Roots better, but this was still good.
I have never listened to this before. The cover art on this album is a little off-putting. I like some heavy metal but am not really into thrash or death metal. That being said, there are some bright spots here. "Altered State" and "Substraction" are favorites. Some of the others, not so much.
A bit too angry for my taste, but the playing is good.
Sadly I'm too much of a weenie to really enjoy heavy metal. The instrumentals were good I think? Vocalist guy please drink some water that growling can't be good for your throat.
Meta
Really liked this. C.I.U stood out to me.
Brazilian heavy metal, didn't not enjoy
I liked this more than I thought I would, the music had good flow and was catchy and dare I say.... boppy? I just can't get behind the death growl vocals.
I'm not the biggest thrash fan. There are a few bangers here, but the mid-tempo tracks were a real bore.
I like metal, but I have always steered away from Sepultura as I thought they were too heavy but I was wrong. I enjoyed it, the music was great but the voice was a bit grating but on the whole I am now not scared of the band… Win!
I put this on with dread, their reputation precedes them. But although this is a sub-genre of rock of which I most certainly not a fan. I was actually quite impressed by it. The only band I have heard do it better is Evil Scarecrow. I was also quite surprised by the cover of Orgasmatron, which in fairness I took a while to recognise it. Really liked this version. As I said this isn't my type of rock, but it was done really well. If it was my type it'd be getting a 4 definitely but I can't really justify more than a 3.
Kind of all the same thing, but very consistent and heavy with some great guitar. Best song: Desperate Cry
HVORFOR RÅBER DE SÅDAN??!!
yeah, I remember them back in the day. Kinda nostalgic, but not something I'd put on now.
Would like to have been able to see the band's faces when someone showed them this Michael Whelan cover art for the first time. I bet they were grinning all afternoon. The album is okay as far as death metal goes.
eh? so after Black Sabbath's namesake album, here's some newer metal coming from... Brazil? but ohhhhhhh, this is pretty decent. although at many times, it just feels... flat. 3/5 anyway.
Classic metal sound
++: Dead Embryonic Cells, Murder, Altered State, Meaningless Movements +: Arise, Desperate Cry, Under Siege (Regnum Irae) +-: Subtraction, Infected Voice 7,3/10
An early mix of Metallica and Slipknot. I liked this album, but nothing really shocked me about it. 5/10
Actually pretty good
An album with a real clarity of purpose, this is a pretty perfect realization of the thrash model, it's full of rage and resentment, furious, aggressive and explosive. Relentless drums blast away like machine guns. Thunderous bass and tight dialed in guitars tear through riffs like tornados before unleashing some gnarly shreding solos and lead harmonies. The chug becomes a groove when they let it sprawl a bit. The vocals are a growling barked sub-scream, a bit one note though.
I have come to realize that with these heavy metal bands it comes down to the vocals for me. I will pretty much always be banging my head when the instruments kick in but the vocals can make or break the album. This one the vocals were not groundbreaking but they were not detrimental to either. A cross between Metallica and unintelligible yelling. Overall solid metal album. 6/10
thrash This is just mostly not for me. There are some things that are interesting and surprising, things that catch me off guard. But I'm pretty checked out for the most part. It's a fine album. But for me personally, it's not a style I like, and it doesn't do anything interesting or extra to really rope me in. I'm sure for someone out there this is a great (maybe even an elite???) album, but I just don't see/hear it. Favorite Song(s): Desperate Cry
Metal! 3 stars
Had I heard this back when it came out, I would have liked it more. Now that I’m older, I just can’t get into stuff this heavy as much. I still liked it, mostly, but it just isn’t my thing anymore. The double bass was pretty awesome though. I didn’t become aware of Sepultura until later in the 90s because earlier I didn’t have friends that listened to this type of metal and my CD budget didn’t allow for as much buying out of curiosity as I would have liked. As this received zero air play and Spotify didn’t exist yet, it never hit my radar. However, I didn’t become aware happen upon Roots Bloody Roots in the late 90s and I would very much recommend that album over this one. Arise is much more straight forward thrashing, as opposed to the intentional tribal influence of Roots. It’s still heavy, but definitely the better of the two. If this is their most acclaimed album, I can imagine what that would make me think of the rest of their work.
When I started playing the first song, I almost immediately turned it off and gave it a 2, but I decided to let it play. While this isn't my favorite genre by a long shot, I did enjoy some of this album. It reminded me of Metallica at times and the drumming kept me interested.
It was ok. Metal bands really know how to shred a guitar, and this band was good at that too. It didn't really hold my attention beyond that.
Not a genre of music I would usually listen to. More enjoyable than I was expecting, really great musicianship. Only downside was the vocals.
Not the biggest Metal fan, songs hit hard enough, may come back to it
b tier thrash. good headbanging stuff but not transcendental
Favorite Track: Altered State
Love me some Metal but they’ve never been one of my favourites. Still some good stuff on here
I guess this is fine thrash/death metal. It's just not for me by any means.
Better than the last Sepultura album. These guys can bring it.
Lot of great guitar riffs throughout the album, but can only manage to listen to this in small doses at a time.
Rough hardcore metal stuff. Not my jam at all.
Questionable choice of an album from Sepultura. I guess this is the record where the band started showing flashes of their new style, which was groundbreaking for metal music at the time, although it's definitely not their best achievement in the discography. I think that Sepultura peaked with Roots, had some really high standard with albums right before and after, and the rest is pretty standard or forgettable, like Arise. I like this titled song from the record, but the thing is, the rest of the album is quite monotone and similar. Plus for metal representation, minus on the choice.
Difficult. I scored Roots a 3 which was an objectively worse album than this. I preferred the thrash/industrial theme much more than the tribal/nu-metal one Roots represented, but still... There was nothing really drawing me back in after the third full run through. It just feels a bit empty, which is such a shame given the multitude of vastly superior metal albums out there as I went into detail with on my Roots review. If that was a 2.5*, this was a 3.5*, but still not good enough for a 4.
I like some of their other albums better. This is ok.
Not a big fan of whatever this is.... death metal? Speed metal? It does have a few moments that I did enjoy especially in the songs Desperate Cries and Altered State. And I was able to make it through the whole album, thankfully it's not an overly ong album. I'll bite my lip and give it 3 stars
I'm not really into metal, so this was new to me. This isn't something I would listen to again, but for what it was, it was alright. Sounds like any other metal album to me.
Actually quite enjoyed this. Not my usual thing (at all) but for some reason I found this quite entertaining. Quite probably the industrial influences piqued my interest more than standard heavy rock fare does. Some interesting sounds in there and at least it had some musical variation. Not likely to ever play it again, but not the worst album on this list by any stretch.
Don’t know what has the largest calluses, the guitarists’ fingers or the vocalist’s vocal cords. Still, strangely listenable.
Reading the wiki about this album really helped me appreciate what I was hearing. Dudes rock
👍
Not a genre that I ever really explored. And probably won’t after this listen. Incredible to read that these guys have sold 20 million records worldwide. But, admittedly, even though every song pretty much sounded alike, this was a decent listen due to some nice tempo shifts and slow downs and some occasional face-melting guitar work. The drumming deserves its own call out as it is pretty sick. I also recorded my fastest average pace bike ride after listening. Not coincidental. Arise indeed.
Man, you know I’m down with some metal riffs, double bass, yell singing and melodic breakdowns. Gets me right in that 3 zone easy…but this just doesn’t have that extra je ne sais quoi to get me to that 4. Let’s go 3.25
I listened to this album on my way to work. I drove 100mph the whole way, jumped out of the moving vehicle when I got to the office, and punched the first person I saw. 3.25/5
Not a big fan of thrash, but I can hear that the album is good. Just not for me
Pretty rad, very Metallica esque
God what a noise. Good noise at first, but it also gets old quick.
Yes!
Enjoyed
I don’t know metal well enough to rate
Intense. Preferred the second half of the album to the first.
Don't care for the vocals. Songs are pretty similar for the most part.
Went into this expecting metal and got metal. Felt like it got very repetitive by the end though.
Lekker tempootje hoor.
Thoughts before listening: Gotta say I'm surprised to see another Sepultura album on this list. For the first one, my favorite songs were the ones with tribal elements mixed with the heavy metal sound. If theres more of that on this album than I am excited to hear it, but if this leans more into the cookie monster growl metal side of Sepultura it's going to be a tough listen. Review: This is better than I was expecting. Its definitely growly death metal which is usually a turn off, but there is also undeniable songwriting here. As someone not overly versed in the different metal subgenres, the music here sounds like thrash to me. Similar to bands I enjoy like Metallica and Megadeth. Thats a good thing to me and I am giving this 3-stars.
Kinda heavy in the morning, but good metal
Like: the speed and energy Dislike: the vocalist, the fact that it all sounds the same. Enjoyable shallow listen, but that's about it.
La verdad pensé que lo iba a sufrir más, pero no está mal. Eso sí, no es mucho mi onda. Pero no aburre como el Justice de los metálica.
Long time since I listened to this
It would have been cool if I had known about this sooner
The natural comparison point is Slayer, but I hardly listen to Slayer and think "fuck! I wish there was less music like this" so how could I possibly be mad?
Can't say I know too many Brazilian metal groups, so this one caught me a tad by surprise. The lyrical content is usually the same throughout thrash/death metal (I feel) but it's generally overshadowed by the heavy guitar or, more notably here, the drum playing. The breakneck pace in which Igor Cavalera plays the drums throughout is almost mesmerizing. Rest of the album kind of blends together to me, though. Death metal has never really been my scene but I can appreciate the craft in moderation. I'm sure this album is more important in some music circles.
Felt good to expand my familiarity with Sepultura beyond Roots. This one’s less impactful, a bit more conventional, but still a very solid 90s metal album. It’s thrashy!
I really didn't expect Brazillian death metal to be my 500th album, but here we are. I've heard of Sepultura but never listened to them before. I know they're big in that scene. It's good for what it is, a shredding metal album. The noteworthy elements are meant to be that they started taking more influence from industrial bands (I don't really hear it to be honest) and was the first experiment in incorporating traditional tribal drumming to their music. I was interested in that but it's only really obvious on one song, 'Altered States', which was the highlight for me. The rest was fine, but was pretty standard metal without much that stands out to a non-metal head. They've got another album on this list and I'm curious to hear how they have evolved later in this career.
I'm just not a huge fan of this genre. I like heavy metal, and I like punk, and I even like thrashy sort of stuff, but this particular combination just doesn't do much for me. That said, there are technical chops for sure, and so I have a hard time giving it a poor rating.
Man that drummers calves have to be burning. That's some intense thousand mile an hour trash metal right there
the drummer on this thing deserves a medal. surprising amount of weird shit going on under the hood which makes this more interesting than the usual thrash/borderline death metal of this era - but also more annoying because it makes me wish they doubled down on it. never thought i'd hear latin-inspired drumming on a thrash metal album, but now I have.
Metallllll
Still not my genre, but a pleasant surprise/fun listen while doing computer work today
Still not fan of theirs.
Seems like pretty standard thrash to me, can get into it but I think I would always put thrash in the middle of the road. Cool that it was early 90s out of Brazil. Also the drums and guitars tempo seemed out of sync in the first song, probably intentional.
I don't listen to metal very often and am totally in the dark relative to where Sepultura falls within the pantheon of the genre's gods. I do know that I liked this album. Does the fact that I didn't get a headache listening to it give it a plus one star, or a minus one star?
3/5
Never was a fan of Sepultura. Their music is good, but it just doesn't resonate.
Pretty standard old school thrash. Much prefer newer stuff.
Blistering heavy/death metal with tasty drum grooves and double bass
Oof, so hard to listen to
My second Sepultura album on the list I enjoyed this one but definitely preferred Roots and also the follow up to this Chaos A.D. Which is not on the list. Good album but better out there.
It was cool but I probably won’t listen to it again.
This brought me back! I listened to a lot more heavy metal as a teenager into my early 20s and less as I got older. Sepultura is one of the best in their genre and although it’s not an album for every mood, I enjoyed the listen.
I had higher hopes because I like the genre and had heard a lot about Sepultura years ago, but I couldn't really get into the songs. They have a similar sound in some ways to other bands I like, but I didn't get the same sense of feeling.
Ah. Metal. Like Rap, you've really got to do something a bit different to stand out. Does do much for me. Tight though. Q mag said. Arise remains their thrash high water mark, sounding like an angry man throwing tools at a urinal while reading the Book of Revelations.
Totally fine as an example of the genre. Personally, didn’t spark an overwhelming reaction.
there used to be a time when i listened to a lot of metal and this would have been 5 stars. now, it is unlikely that i will listen to this or remember it after today.
Loud
Pretty bad ass. Not too in the mood for this music when I heard it, but I could tell it's top notch.
I liked this, although it got a little repetitive at times. Pretty classic thrash without sounding like trash. 3.5/5
I've not listened to this yet, but guessing it's A3 for me, hopefully I'm right :)
well-made but it's not for me
This wasn't bad. I hadn't listened to them before, but probably wouldn't again.
The vocals on this album were hit or miss for me. But the music and instrumentation was spot on, great stuff. Also, some of the topics on this album are lyrically outstanding. I think I like their other album on this project better ("Roots"), but that said, I think it's very apparent that whether tackling the genres of thrash metal or nu metal, Sepultura is excellent at encompassing a unique and often cultural sound into their music.
Metal is not my thing. I'm sure they're talented but not sure why anyone enjoys this.
This was alright, I got a few songs in, but really I know I have no ambition to listen to anymore…they are obviously very good at what they do, but I don’t think I will find the space and time where I can really listen to this album
Ehkä turhankin simppeliä heviä, mutta ei tätä paskaksi voi haukkua. Niukasti taipuu kolmosen puolelle.
What i realized going through this list is how much is based on Nostalgia to an album. Had i heard this album in high school i would probably give this a 4-5. But to me it mostly sound like Slayer with a different singer. It's not bad by any means i like Slayer but nothing really stood out to me. But as i said it's probably due to no prior listening of Sepultura more than 'Roots Bloody Roots'
Guitar Hero 3 except replace the “Guitar Hero” with “Generic classic rock which is an awesome genre but wish I had more so I’m giving it a”
too many parts
Not bad!
I enjoy a certain amount of thrash and this is almost too much thrash. I don't care for the vocals. Musically it's decent.
first listen classic 90s thrash metal
Setting: At home, painting for a community college painting class. Mood: Cloudy day caffeine crash I saw Sepultura in high school and they were insane. I'd been into metal for about 2 years, and it was the first time I'd seen a non Western take on metal, which was pretty eye/ear opening. The most memorable part was the drummer, who was doing jungle/tribal beats like on Altered State. I liked this album but didn't love it. In the years since seeing them live, I still rarely listen to their recordings and I feel the same about this one. I appreciate it and would listen again, but its not my favorite. Album cover: B+
didn't finish it, don't really care for it, cool metal stuff and all but I just don't really care haha. respectful 3
We've all been questioning the legitimacy of this list. Who put it together? What are their credentials? How will I know that I'm *really* listening to the 1001 greatest albums? When I cracked open todays album and saw 'Orgasmatron' queued up, I was filled with a sense of calm. The list-makers know what they're doing. I love the music. It's some sweet metal and I was soft-headbanging at my desk. I just can't make myself enjoy the gravely scream vocals. I was largely waiting for those to stop so I could enjoy musical interludes. Fortunately there were a lot of them, so I made it through the album. I probably wouldn't play this specific record again because of that gripe, but I can tell this album fucks. If I was more of a death-metal-vocals kind of guy I'd probably be giving it an 8, but it's got to be a 6/10 for me.
Too hard core for my taste, but sure good head-banging music if you’re in the mood
I'm way over Metal but this sounded good
Not my favourite genre, but had some good instrumental parts.
This is very good for quasi-death metal. But the key part of that sentence is "death metal". I have gone to see Opeth live, so I can appreciate the quality and talent regardless of the genre, but at the same time, genre does matter. Comparing the best kids album of all time to the best rock album of all time is not a fair contest. One genre is simply better than the other. So yes, this is good, and it expands on the genre by using Latin influences and such. But that's sort of like saying, "Look, I painted this Ford Pinto with a gorgeous cherry metallic paint, added pin stripes, and a spoiler!" Sure, but it's still a Pinto. This is still death metal.
Heavy metal. Average
I enjoyed this when it came out - I was a full on metalhead in the 90s, and Sepultura was about my limit. Listening today for the first time in probably 25-30 years, and it's OK. It's not as extreme as I remember, and it is a bit samey, but it's OK. I do prefer when they lay off the blast beats a bit and give the music some groove and space to breathe, but that's not really the nature of the genre here.
Heavy and serious, but somehow tuneful (even if not obviously so) and enjoyable. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Arise Date listened: 11/03/24
not something i’d typically go for but i was pleasantly surprised. the drumming is fucking insane and the guitar was really impressive also. a couple songs kinda blended together and sounded the same. 3.5
Huh. Neve knew Sepultura were Brazilian. Learn something new every day.
I liked this album, but I find myself drifting further away from metal.
Sounded like arguing monsters but I dug it.
Texterna är oerhört skämmiga och sången lite vad den är, men i övrigt tycker jag fan att det här var tight och bra.
This was actually good, only skipped a couple tracks.
Classic
Yeah I just can't fairly rate this album. It might be great but I can't get through a metal album. The vocals are so tough.
Its loud and obnoxious and extremely unapologetic for what it is, but its also not very good, its just kinda blends into one long track, there a few stand out songs, but I'd never choose to listen to this again and I much preferred roots.
I likes the earlier songs of the album better, cool songs but not into the metal vocals.
Just had to listen to Kiss (rated that nonsense with 1 star) and thought: O no, another one. But this one was better, real energy and singing is mean as hell. Still not my music but 3 stars.
7/10
There are some good songs but it winds up feeling a bit repetitive.
Thrash metal. Ni fu ni fa.
Not a heavy metal fan
Thrash is one of my favorite metal subgenres, and this is a killer example of it. They introduce just enough experimentation and genre crossover to keep it interesting throughout. Plus the cover is metal as hell.
I can recognize the talent, but not my kind of metal. Halfway through I was bored, but I did give the whole thing a shot.
Thrashy
I haven't listened to enough thrash metal to know if this is good or not. I think I enjoyed the listen, but I can't be sure if that's purely because this type of music was a new experience for me.
I don't personally enjoy this style of music, but I can appreciate the talent required to make it. The insane speed of the drummer almost sounding like machine gun fire is difficult and requires talent to stay in time. The sweeping guitar solos require thousands of hours of practice to master, and the bassist follows along to the guitar notes so smoothly you're barely aware that the instrument is there at all, other than the extra depth added to the solos. The one thing I truly dislike about this style of music is the vocals. The guttural growls of the singing make the lyrics incomprehensible. I understand this is the style, I just don't enjoy it. From a technical aspect, these musicians are very talented
So this slams. But an hour of it is pretty exhausting. Not my genre, though I can appreciate the intensity, power and accuracy. Weird take: some of this is actually quite melodic, and the vocals are super clear (English as a second language effect?), so it comes on at times like a thrash ABBA 😅
Arise is a solid thrash metal album that showcases Sepultura's evolution from their death metal roots. It features influences from hardcore punk, industrial metal, and tribal drumming, creating a diverse and powerful sound. However, compared to their later masterpiece Roots, Arise falls a bit short in terms of originality and variety. Some of the songs sound too similar and lack the memorable hooks and riffs that make Roots stand out. Arise is still a great album that deserves a listen from any metal fan and to be within the book, but it is not the best representation of Sepultura's creativity and innovation.
Giving this the benefit of the doubt, because listening on phone speakers in the bath is probably not what they intended. Could imagine vibing to this live with a crowd.
Enjoyed it but not a big Sepultura fan.
Really like the album, some great guitar work.
This was pretty good. The harsh vocals weren't constant. Reminded me of metallica.
Thrashy
I liked it better then i thought i was gonna. Kinda in the thrash metal, slayer mold in my mind. Not a bad one to have on while working out.
Not great not horrible. Pretty standard metal.
1991, Thrash metal, death metal If you like this kind of music, it has a really great sound. There is only so much of this I can handle anymore. Very Metallica-like. It does rock though! Standout: Arise 3/5
Thrash metal is not my usual jam, I did find this A LOT to get through, and had to do it in a few sittings- but I did actually enjoying the album musically! Not every track but I’d listen to some of this again if I was in a particular mood. Some of its a bit silly including the cover art, but also kind of rad at the same time Not sure if a fave track for this one - they blended together a bit after a while!

Classy and elegant
Svaka metall
Despite there are some great guitar riffs and beautiful rhythms, I certainly hate drum lines of this kind. It reminds me the worst impression of Slayer. It’s not beauty of music, it’s just rough sound for rough sound. One songs was added to my list, anyway.
One thing this project has made clear to me is that, Black Sabbath notwithstanding, I'm just not into metal. There have been a few albums here and there that I've liked OK, but overall, my problem with the genre is that every song on any particular album just sounds the same to me, and overall, I just can't take the lyrics seriously. And those complaints were mostly true for this album, too, so I found myself struggling to focus. Except that as the album went on, I kept noticing things that kept pulling me back into the music. I kept saying, "Oh that part's cool. Nice guitar tone there. Oh, that was a cool rhythmic bit. Nice change-up," etc. etc. Enough so that I'm sure if I gave this album a few more spins it would win me over. Except of course that I really don't love the overall sound or ethos. All those double-kick drums pummeled me into submission. Frankly—and maybe this is heresy—but I find that this kind of metal just doesn't rock the way that, say, Heart's "Barracuda" does. It's just a lot of noise with a few very cool moments. But although this album didn't totally work for me, it did pique my interest enough to do a little research into the band, and then I wound up checking out a few songs from some of their other albums. Roots—an album that I now know is also on this list—is a way more interesting album, filled with Brazilian rhythms and instruments and that album grabbed me immediately. So anyway, this album is OK—possibly even great if you're into this kind of music. I'm glad I heard it, and Sepultura is now on my list of bands to watch.
Thought it was interesting that these guys were from Brazil. They sound like they are similar to Metallica but with more obscene lyrics. Overall it was decently enjoyable and my metal head friends like this album. Guessing that means it’s pretty solid as far as metal goes. I enjoyed it enough. 5.9/10
Genre defining. Not my favorite style of music, but I appreciate it. 3/5
I’m not big into metal, but I quite enjoyed this album. The talent is evident, and it’s a very worthy addition to this list.
Not bad instrumentally just don’t really like dudes voice
Nicely done for what it is
Death metal absolutely isn’t for everyone. But this album is satisfyingly brutal.
Disco total de thrash metal en toda regla. Muy intenso y sin bajar el pistón. Para muy incondicionales. No es mi género predilecto, pero podría llegar a escucharlo
Brutal
First time hearing Sepultura. I'm generally not a fan of growling vocals, so that is going to bring my rating down automatically. Otherwise, this album has its moments. The lead guitar riff in the first track, Arise, was great. As were some of the solos. I didn't understand many of the lyrics, but I'm pretty sure they would be depressing if I looked them up so I won't.
Hard as fuck. Brazils premier metal act have never been a band that decides to go easy on us. Here they drop into our cerebrum and decide to stay for the duration of these 9 tracks. Blasting right through them viciously.
Not really my cup of tea, but I could see myself being in the right mood for this. The lyrics are stupid. Production value is excellent. Technically pretty impressive.
Not my style, but better than I thought.
Not quite my everyday listen, but definitely better suited for a high intensity bike ride than the last two. I enjoyed this one more than I was expecting.
For what it is it's good but it's not what I prefer. I'd be lying if I said I listened to the whole thing but I'm still giving it 3*. It's good for what it is, I'm not going to over penalize for personal preference.
Skilled artists, cool music, nothing particular stands out to me except some neat, ambient intros that sound almost like background music in an arcade fighter game. Listening to this made me want to go listen to the Batmetal trilogy. Favorite tracks: Altered State, Desperate Cry.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Desperate Cry (3) 2 - Arise (1) 3 - Dead Embryonic Cells (2)
Brazil you say? Vocals are a bit one note, but otherwise kinda rips.
Just felt like an average metal album. Not a lot of diversity in the tracks.
Good metal type album, hard for me to get into but it goes hard
It was alright thrash metal.Sounded a lot like slayer, a lot of the riffs sounded the same and the vocals weren’t anything special.Bit disappointed because I like a few sepulture songs.
I'm still a newcomer to the metal genre. I enjoyed this one. Mainly thrash, but they also incorporate some elements of death metal, heavy metal, and even hardcore and latin music. The instrumentation is great. Some of the lyrical content is interesting as well, sometimes discussing corruption and other political themes.
I specifically remember being afraid of Sepultura and this album cover in particular as a sheltered church kid. Seems silly in retrospect. Pretty good thrash metal. I don't LOVE it love it, but it's impressive.
Trash
made me branch out from my usual genre, has a few great songs. 7/10
Nice Riffs
This could have been a lot worse
I know that this is recognized as one of the best "Sepultura" albums, and I understand why. However, this album looks more like a path for what they achieve in "Roots" and sounds a bit repetitive—a solid 3-star, but still 3.
Overall there were some fun tracks, but a lot of it sounded 'samey' and like noise to me - it's hard to appreciate the artistry when the guitars all sound the same across the different tracks. That could be a reflection of my relationship with heavy metal (very hit or miss). It's definitely genre defining, and there were some fun bits (like the bass in Subtraction). I may continue to give this a try, but right now it doesn't feel like the right fit. Also that album art is freaky dude.
Some intros are better than the songs themselves. Expected to like it more, but it's still good
ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS… it’s alright… definitely epic if thrash is your bag.
This album made me want to run head-first through a brick wall at full speed. Not a fan of metal but thought this was pretty good. Metal artists (outside of probably the singers for the most part) never get a fair shake with their guitar and especially drumming skills. 6/10.
Thrash metal. Ni fu ni fa.
It's good for what it is- full on Metal. You can see what it sets out to do and it does it well and I enjoyed it. It irritates me how others dismiss it without really trying to embrace the genre.
Heavy brutal
Younger me would definitely have rated this album higher. Older me stills thinks this is a great thrash metal record, but also think it's "by the books", and doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from it's peers. Sepultura can do -and did- better.
I liked the instrumentation more than the clichè metal vocals.
I didn't know two things before I listened to this album. 1. Sepultura is Brazilian 2. I wanted to be angry today
the album felt long and was irritating with mostly no feeling. desperate cry solo.
The cover certainly set some negative expectations in my mind about this album. This music is not in my wheelhouse. Still, there were several moments when I really liked what was happening - the solo in “Dead Embryonic Cells”; the introduction and solos (one with an acoustic part!) in “Altered States”; the drums and fast guitar in “Under Seige (Regnum Irae)”. There was definitely more to like here than I expected. The vocal delivery seems like a caricature, but I’m guessing that caricature might have been the product of the 30+ years of albums that followed this. I can imagine more melodious lead vocals might have made this a love connection… Not my thing, but surprisingly I didn’t hate it.
Not sure what makes this part of the 1001, but certain seems like a consistent fast metal album. It certainly has a samey-ness that carries through track after track.... fast drums, fast guitar, and a pretty monotone shouting vocal delivery. I did get a kick out of Orgasmatron.
I never fail to be mindblown by Igor's drummer. What a beast, easily one of the best from the thrash era. While I really like Arise, I find it to be a bit less memorable than its counterpart, Beneath the Remains. Don't get me wrong, there are still riffs for days in there, but they don't stick with me in the same way Beneath does. First 3 tracks + Altered State are awesome though
Ah yes, trash metal.
Not really into trash metal, but it was fun overall
I'm glad that there is that kind of metal on the 1001. I do not consider "Arise" as a masterpiece of its kind, it sounds a little samey and lacks variety, but the vibe is overall violent and solid. More metal please!
OK
This is someone’s jam, but not really mine.
not my favourite kind of metal but still pretty cool
Not normally my style of metal but there's some great riffs on here. I'd like to give it another listen down the road. 3.5/5
Was not expecting to see this band on here, let alone realize that they are a much older band than I thought. I think I've seen a few Sepultura songs scattered on some movie soundtracks and MTV's Headbangers Ball cds, but didn't know they were from the 80's! Very impressive in that regard, even if I wasn't a fan of all the songs. Glad to see more metal on here!
The kind of metal album that rarely works for me, it's just a style that I don't have much need for in my life. I gave it a fighting chance by listening to it at the gym, and....honestly, it worked out pretty well. Quite a few jams that I saved, and I could feel the evil creeping in with every rep. Love that this is a Brazilian band! Very good job. Favorite tracks: Arise, Desperate Cry, Subtraction, Under Siege. Album art: What is this rotting creature? I love metal artists for the disgusting album art they select. The art style here is fantastic, I have no idea what I'm looking at but it's awful and I love it. 3.5/5
Didn’t finish the whole thing - but I think I kind of get it. I’m not sure there will be a five star album from me from this genre, it’s just not my thing. The thumping chugga chugga, I find a bit monotonous but I’m guessing metal fans find my music boring by comparison. I might try to listen to the whole thing - I just gotta pick my setting correctly.
it's good
хз я нич не понимаю в метале, ну сам звук мощный сочный хороший
It's that weird period between their Thrash metal/death metal style to their industrial style which I prefer,
Nice change of pace. 3/5 on the relisten scale, but 10/5 on the double bass kick drum scale.
I finally got a chance to listen to Arise. I like it more than I expected to. The guitars and drums are good but I am just not a big fan of this style of vocals. This one gets a 3/5 from me.
I never could get into Sepultura when I was younger, and a lot more into thrash metal. They definitely leaned hard into the hardcore punk roots of thrash, which I do like because as we all know, hardcore rules. Some good songs here, Arise, Dead Embryonic Cells, Desperate Cry and some forgettable ones too, but overall a decent album and despite what people say, a good follow up to Beneath The Remains. Chaos A.D. is better, though!
I'm a fan of metal, although I probably don't qualify as a metalhead. This album felt pretty same-y, although it did have some moments that felt more iconic or recognizable (start of Meaningless Movements, some phrases in Arise) that helped some of the songs stand out. It's in the right genre for my taste, but didn't inspire much feeling.
Paras trashmetallilevy heh, ihan nautintoa tuotti välillä.
3.75
Geeeeeetar
Every song kind of sounded the same
Good speedy aggressive thrash, a ton of cool riffs, and I can hear why a metalhead would love this, but generally the sonic assault is a bit much for me.
Thrash metal from Brazil! Inspired more by Slayer than Metallica, Sepultra intends to evoke evil, hellish imagery in their killer riffs and snarling vocals. And while the band's sound is firmly rooted in thrash metal, certain elements from other genres are incorporated for added variation, such as tribal drums and industrial ambience. Solid level of quality in terms of the album's output, consistent through and through. A common problem with a lot of albums like this is going to be pacing and lack of variation. I think Arise could've used more of the industrial parts to keep things fresh. Otherwise, great thrash metal is still appreciated.
helt lit, Desperate Cry och Altered State var bra
Not a big fan of metal, I prefer Metallica.
3.75
So tight, so precise, so intense. I love the drumming in particular - there’s a lot of power in the playing but it’s really focused and on point. I can’t imagine how in sync with your bandmates you have to be to pull off music like this. There are some very drastic time signature and tempo changes but every band member clicks into place like a machine. Sepultura has a brutal, punishing style but it’s carefully controlled. I admire the technical precision of the band but one thing holding me back from loving the music is that a lot of songs blur together for me. I’m sure the more I listen to the album, the more the different songs will stand out. But I could use a little more color or personality to distinguish the songs.
Not bad but gets repetitive fast
Very unique. I've known them from Ratamahatta, but their other songs are good as well. This album is personally just not my taste.
Jaksoin kuunnella alusta loppuun, vaikka en ookaan mikään metalhead, eli ei tää nyt ihan huono voinu olla!
Pretty standard '90s metal album, not a lot of these songs are going to stick with me but I did like it for what that's worth. 3.5/5
Arise definitely sits in an interesting zone between thrash and death metal. I think the two albums which came after with Max Cavalera really refined Sepultura into the recognisable sound I have of them in my head. Arise is a solid album with not a lot of filler. But it also doesn't standout to me in comparison to other albums at the time.
I think it was enjoyable but nothing special. Solid heavy metal. There was some filler.
Very accessible metal, not a punishment to listen to.
As a metal fan, I never really listened to Sepultura, but I’ve listened to a lot of the thrash that came out of the 80’s, and while this is one of the better ones, it doesn’t really differentiate itself that much in my view. It’s a solid thrash album, but having heard Roots, which in my view is where Sepultura solidly differentiated itself from other thrash bands and hit its creative apex, it’s hard to give this a high review.
Music of the devil
favorite: dead embryonic cells
Toit.
Thrash rock. Seemed ok
The tracks with the acoustic guitars provide this otherwise plain metal album some dynamics. The older I get, the more I feel this genre is not for me.
Classic Heavy Metal from the 90s, not my favourite genre at all but this album managed to just stay within the "hardness"-threshold I can tolerate
I enjoyed this. It takes a bit of stamina but there's some awesome riffs on this
Hoewel ik af en toe van iets stevig houd, vond ik dit nogal een homogeen album. zat weinig verrassend in
Having previously experienced the amazing "Roots" album, "Arise" is a near perfect example of looking back in time and seeing how a band can get better. The album is a bit rough with the band's maturity still growing, lacking the cohesively chaotic enjoyment of "Roots" but one can still hear the elements that would surely meld together years later. "Arise" is definitely the sound of a band that grew from the 80s and evolving with the 90s. The sound is the one of kids in a garage just letting it all go, except there is a noticeable discipline that can be heard and for that alone, this album is a testament to the metal genre. Overall, this is not "Roots" so there is missing a certain innovation and use of creative outlets that impacted this review's first impression, but "Arise" succeeds as a solid metal album. Guitars are full of sound rather than sounding hollow questioning whether or not a bass player exists, the percussion is disciplined, the vocals gritty yet musically sensical. This is metal as it should be, melodically intense promoting an aggressive sense of calm.
Just enough variation to keep me interested. Just too much repetition to keep me hooked.
Not in the Metallica/Slayer/Megadeath/Anthrax category for me, but pretty good. I found two songs that are quite runnable for me. Definitely not for everyone and I don't love it, but I can hear some influences on bands that I do love (mainly Bring Me the Horizon and Slipknot). I had no idea these guys were Brazillian.
Pretty good from what I heard of it, I’ll have to listen to it a few more times though. I’ve got a feeling it’ll grow on me.
Intricate metal that sounds like the start of later metal. A decent listen.
Much more interesting than I remembered. Thrash that's more leaning toward Pantera groove.
This is very good fun. Relentlessly fast metal that blasts you straight in the face. However, as it goes on, there is very little tonal variety - it is fun, but has the effect of eating 12 Easter eggs in a row.
