This album rips so hard
Oh what a joy ... some good music again, the third album in a row which I like after having had to fight through the last 10 albums (of which 9 were really boring)
A fine change of pace with these daily albums!
This list has been pretty light on metal; perhaps that's intentional... And looking back through the genre filters, it's hard to justify the likes of Rush, ZZ Top, and Hendrix in "metal" of any categorization. Out of the gate, this is obviously borrowing from a thrash/groove playbook. But seems to have more alignment with Pantera than early Metallica in the use of heavy riffs, tempo play, and aggression. Desperate Cry is among my favorites of the first half. Some back and forth tempo play, and a section towards the 5:00 mark where there is a sludgy rhythmic guitar riff with this contrasting dissonant reverberation in the background that is just fantastic. IMO metal and certain strains of electronica make for the best background music when coding. Perfect slurry of propulsive tempos with heavily rhythmic composition that keep you moving and stimulated from start to finish. This was a fine thrash album and I'm glad for it this Monday morning. High 4.
Nothing wrong with a little 9:30am Tuesday morning death metal. This is exactly what I expected this to sound like in terms of death/thrash metal. Nothing wrong with that at all cause I am a pretty big fan. There were some really cool speed metal parts in a few songs too which I am always down with. Not my favorite type of metal but it was definitely good. Pretty low 4 because I liked this much more than a 3.
This album rips! I'd take it over any Pantera album.
One of the better metal albums on this list. Some of these tracks sound like they were lifted off Ministry’s The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste. Pretty solid.
I will say that I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would. Heavy metal is generally not my favorite genre, and it normally has to do with the vocals or the guitar. I thought the guitar was solid and not overly distorted, which is normally where my problem comes from. The vocals were definitely my least favorite part of the album, but they weren't the worst metal vocals, so they didn't bother me that much. The drums were on point, and I do love hard hitting drums. Overall I enjoyed the album, not sure how often I'll come back to it, but always nice to be proven wrong based on initial thoughts.
So glad there were two Sepultura albums on here. Heavier than I usually listen to but great to get more than one exposure to them.
I remember having another album by them that I thought was so lame, I gave it a 2. Somehow though, I enjoyed this one a fair amount!
Actually enjoyed this. Repetitive and heavy but still interesting. Not sure I will revisit and I do feel quite tired as it ends, but I definitely enjoyed it more than I expected. 4 for quality
nothing like some good ol’ thrash to get the heart pumping. highlights: “arise” “dead embryonic cells” “meaningless movements”
Rips
This kinda eats Metallica’s awful music for breakfast. Not my type of thing at all but it’s just really well made and hard and makes me wanna smash stuff and mosh, which are not my usual vibes. It’s just a big “hell yeah” from me. Great week of albums, can’t wait to get an awful album immediately after I rate this.
All of my friends were metal heads but I never really felt the need to dig too deep. All that to say I know of this band but have not spent any time with them. It's a great album that hooks you in from the start. Arise is a great opener and Dead Embryonic Cells just takes the cake. Anyway, I'll put this band on my listen to again one day list.
Handful of good tracks
I'm not sure what it is about thrash metal that I appreciate so much more than ever other type of metal, but every time I find a metal band that I like, they are almost inevitably a thrash metal band. Sepultura is one of the metal bands that I've been introduced to on this list that I've really enjoyed. I liked Roots better than this album, but I can also see how this album led to that one. They are definitely starting to incorporate influences from other genres here 4/5
More of a standard thrash metal album than their other on this list and frankly, I much prefer it. Pummeling drums, shredded guitars, growling vocals - and it all has just a dash of experimentalism going on behind the scenes. Best Tracks: Arise; Dead Embryonic Cells; Desperate Cry
Great Brazilian thrash metal band.
One of the few metal albums I still play all the time. Is it perfect? No, not at all. But it's so energetic. I was very disappointed when Chaos A.D. came out after this one. Favorite song: desperate cry.
Thrash metal \../
It's no wonder these guys are considered Metal gods. This record rocks. I'm new to metal Fandom and two thing I look for. Vocal tone, and tempo variation. These guys get an A and A+ respectively. Did they invent the 'hard snare on the downbeat' style or just perfect it?
Thrash isn't my area of expertise; but I liked this a lot. The drumming is phenomenal. The guitar tone is pretty dated, but the playing is great. The music makes me want to move my body. Win.
Solid thrash metal
This is my first time listening to Sepultura, but I've heard only good things about them. The entire album is structured and presented in this very monochromatic and skeletal way where it wasn't any particular riff that hooked me, but rather the general harsh, distorted, and fuzzy blend of sounds. As a result, I found the sonic palette to be very reserved and restrictive here but luckily, the motif followed is still largely enjoyable. The variance on this album comes from the occasional interjections that stray from this album's locked-in course. This is seen in the second half of 'Desperate Cry', the spikes of noise on 'Subtraction', and the ethereal and almost tribal opening to 'Altered State'. Variation also comes in terms of the lyrical themes tackled here. While the general theme of human suffering, nature, and greed (with a religious focus) are persistent, 'Altered State' has Max tackling the theme of hallucinogenics, again showing some interesting variance. I particularly love the way these general themes are tackled in songs like 'Dead Embryonic Cells' and especially the closer 'Infected Voice'. They present a very bleak outlook for humanity that perfectly complements this album's dismal vibe. Overall, I enjoyed this album and I think it really benefits from its very consistent and restrictive approach. It makes it all feel very organized, calculated, and raw, all without sacrificing its troubled presentation and skull-crushing thrash metal sound.
Oh my god what in gods name is this. This fucks so hard. I love this dumb edgy album cover. I love metal when it knows how stupid it is. Nothing is being innovated really, but god is it fun. Christ, I can’t believe I’m going to praise a song called Dead Embryonic Cells, I figured it would be a typical edgy thing meant to shock, but to call like people who have grown disenchanted and disenfranchised by the system they live in that…is actually kinda smarter than I expect from this genre? Desperate Cry has some amazing guitar work. I will say the drums sound a little off in the album as a whole. But honestly it’s not TOO bad, they might actually add some charm.
A kick in the ass
This sounds dated and formulaic, but it certainly wasn't back when it was released. Not the album from Sepultura that I expected on this list as they have better, but I like the fact that there is some classic thrash on here.
Heard this and another album of their's not too long ago and didn't think much of it, just that it was alright, i'm not too much of a thrash metal listener anymore. Giving it another listen though I must've just not been in the metal mood at the time, as this actually shreds pretty hard. Didn't feel like there was a weak song, some wild riffs and solos going on, exactly what you want from the genre. Might need to give them another chance.
I didn’t expect to get much out of this one because I don’t love a lot of classic thrash, but this was actually very good. Cool riffs, cool solos, what’s not to like?
Good album, enjoyed the energy.
A decent metal album. Not far enough into the roots of the genre to really feel or see its impact. Not overly special to me as an outsider to this era.
Excellent
Riffs
Pretty good overall, not my favorite style of metal but definitely worth a listen
Didn't expect to like this much but really enjoyed it. Driving, complex music. Can't fully get on board with the death metal vocals yet but the rest is awesome.
Another fire Sepultura album. The production was a bit rough at times (the snare in particular sounded pretty bad on a few tracks) but the riffs and the overall energy were great
I don"t like metal. That said, if you do, this album has everything you need. Strong musicianship. Frenetic drumming. Quintessential metal vocals. Head thumping bass. But wasted on me.
Quality metal.
This album is good, but is it really that special? I feel like just having Roots on this list would be enough. Or maybe I'm just spoiled for choice when it comes to death metal and failing to appreciate some of the classics as a result.
1991 was a good year
Sorry Os Mutantes, but I think I've found my new favorite Brazilian album. What can I say? I like me some good thrash metal, and Arise by Sepultura delivers just that. This is a pretty good thrash metal album, which is just what I need to thoroughly enjoy it. The sound is great. The riffs and solos are pretty good. The vocals are definitely growly, which fits the nature of thrash metal like this, but they are still intelligible, which is always a good thing. The lyrics are a bit nihilistic for my taste at times, but are still well-written and have some good points at others. This album's not perfect or anything. It does get a bit repetitive by the end, but I don't really care that much. I really enjoyed listening to this album, and that's good enough for me. 4/5.
6.5/10 - 4/5 Pretty good thrash. I really enjoyed the variation inside of each song. Long, sprawling, different sounding sections. Despite that, some themes were more questionable, and the vocals didn't do anything for me.
Good album
Thrash metal at it's best. I have not listened to Sepultura in the past. I found my self hyped and moving during this, taping my feet to the blast beats. Very cool album, very rowdy, not for everyone. Love the dynamics as well.
An absolute shredder. Does what it does very, very well. Never let's up but also includes enough of a range of dynamics to leave the ears fresh. Much prefer the vocals here to someone like Kirk Hammet in the thrash game - really gets my snarl going. Fave track: Desperate Cry
Ahhh, just what the doctor ordered! An hour-long, metal-fuelled existential crisis to start my Thursday. They were really going through it for this one. I actually quite like it, the music is relentless and punishing, complimented perfectly by the guttural growling vocals. It's exactly what I want when I want to head bang my blues away.
Metal bias incoming - this album fucks. Sepultura have been on my periphery for a while but I've only ever heard them on shuffle. Arise proves demonstrably that they are a tight-knight unit that know what they're doing. I had no idea they were Brazilian too, so I've learned something today too.
oscar the grouch metal
I quite enjoyed this. There were some really wicked guitar solos.
Cover nice.

Deserves to be in the classic thrash conversation with the big four. The death metal style vocals aren't my thing, but looking past that there's some excellent thrash here.
I'll probably listen again - a few groovy songs, but otherwise nothing special imo
Arise ist geil
As a massive metal head, I was really looking forward to doing a metal album and after listening to Arise, I sure was quite satisfied. Unlike most albums, the longer songs on this album are the best ones since that's when they get really experimental and interesting to listen to. This album was really what I hoped for when doing a metal album. Best Song: Desperate Cry Worst Song: Infected Voice
OK... another step forward? Where other aggressive metal often sounds to me like no one in the band is listening to the other members, there was a musicality here that I genuinely enjoyed. Avoiding a "spigot on full blast" approach, even the gruff vocals had a cadence and phrasing that complemented the compositions — which I also thought were well-crafted — and understanding what was being sung (said? barked?) was another point in the band's favor. So, a 4-star doesn't mean I'll be dropping the needle on this album again in the near future, it's still a bit too much for my personal taste, but I'm scoring high because I thought this was a class above the other material I've checked out in this genre.
I'm not a Metal connoisseur, but I do appreciate it every once in a while. While I've never heard of Sepultura, I do have a new favourite metal band. Their lyrics are a little cheesy and uninspired, but I'm going to chalk that up to a band whose first language isn't English writing lyrics in English.
I’ve heard of Sepultura many times before, but never really gave them a good listen. I always assumed they were a little too heavy for my tastes, but I made that judgment without actually listening which is pretty silly really. Let’s have a good listen today! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Dead Embryonic Cells, Altered State I expected this to be a lot heavier than it was. To my ears, this is thrash metal. I expected death/black metal and I don’t know why. I’m not usually a fan of thrash, but this definitely had me tapping away a lot. Specifically, I love how the drums sound on this. They’re very punchy and clear, being loud but while still letting the guitar be clearly heard. This was tight, nice, and a lot more enjoyable than I expected.
This album fucks. I see the most common complaint about this album and Sepultura in general are the corny lyrics. I can't understand a single word that Max Cavalera is singing, so I can't relate. The songs simply go insanely hard. That's my deep analysis. Follow for more Simpsons trivia.
Never heard of them before but it was surprisingly good!
the band look like they're in the matrix
Cool.
I have always appreciated Sepultura's ability to build on their sound through their career rather than constantly attempt to catch the same bolt of lightning in a bottle. I would also consider Igor Cavalera one of the most interesting metal drummers, while ARISE has tracks with bland speed/death drum blasts, Igor still sprinkles some Latin flairs that will turn your head.
Quite good. More metallica-esque than I thought it would be, cover art is very death metal. One of the songs made me think I was listening to Power Trip
Damn, been a while since i last listened to this, but it still rocks as hard as ever. The death metal edge to this really adds a lot to what would otherwise be an already quite good thrash record.
It's fine if you like death metal. I'd have to be in the mood for it to listen for more than one or two tracks. Would've been something I'd have listened to a lot in college.
Nasty heavy metal. Great gym music. I really enjoyed a majority of the breakdowns. The guys have some disgusting drops, the kind that give me a lemon face and cause my head to start nodding. Would absolutely listen again.
\m/ \m/
An unexpectedly kickass blend of thrash metal and groove metal.
Very intense. Great for before a metal gig, not so great when in work!
What more can I say other than it is a consistently great, headbanging metal classic? It just is and nothing more. Favorites: Dead Embryonic Cells, Desperate Cry, Subtraction, Altered State, Under Siege (Regnum Irae), Orgasmatron, C.I.U. (Criminals in Uniform).
I don’t know how to start this album off so I’ll just say this: it’s good. Arise is very much a thrash metal album with some hints of experimentation. The drums and bass on a number of tracks have a death metal quality to them and the vocals and themes do feel akin to death metal. The guitars are most definitely thrash metal though. And they are pretty good. Admittedly, some of the death metal feeling drums are lost by the middle of the record, occasionally making a few appearances but it is mostly thrash. Now that experimentation comes in a few different ways. Some of the tracks have industrial sounding intros (the only ones I remember are the first two tracks) which kind of don’t fit as they’re just thrown in but it’s not that bad I suppose. Also the Latin drums in the intro of “Altered State” is pretty good and helps add more tension to the upcoming track which is nice. Lastly, the song desperate cry has a mix of hardcore punk, thrash, and death metal which is pretty cool and it all mixes together seamlessly. That is probably why it is my personal favorite track on the album. Overall though, it was an enjoyable thrash metal album with some death metal influences that tried a little bit to experiment but didn’t do too much and is just really thrash and death metal. I’d say a 6/10, maybe 7/10 is warranted.
Pretty solid metal album, great riffs
This album is a great thrash and death metal album. It also contains alternative, hardcore, and Latin influences. Metal is not a genre I’m very familiar with, but I did enjoy this album quite a bit though it doesn’t rise to the level of Master of Puppets for example.
4.0 - Another killer entry from Sepultura - these guys are the real deal. Nine songs, nine scintillating guitar solos. Add onto that political angst, consummate heavy metal drumming and nasty riffs.
THRASH THRASH THRASH THRASH THRASH THRASH THRASH
i almost feel bad rating this, because i’m just not a metalhead and feel like i can’t appreciate it fully. with that being said, there were some really cool moments here
Oh man! How have I missed this band?! I’ve seen the name multiple times, but never took the time to check them out, and I think I would have been drawn to metal sooner if I had! Great album that grabs you from the first song and gets you pumped up throughout the whole album. Listen again: totally Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: first one (Arise) as it drew me in instantly! Worst Song
Really surprised I liked thrash so much. The breakdowns were the most interesting part to me. It's a shame the bass is mixed so low
It's a real decent thrash metal album. According to a lot of people their best, but I have a bit of a different opinion. In contrast to the great, hard and atmospheric Beneath the Remains that preceded Arise, I find quite a few songs on Arise unimaginative and log. Chaos AD after this one went in a different direction and for me, that's where they re-found a sense of experimentation, sounds and songwriting. This one falls in-between. Still good. Not great.
I’ve always found death metal to be a pretty difficult genre to get into, but these guys seem like they’re really going to be my intro. Instrumentation fucking slaps, so do the structure and chords. My problem bas always been associated with the degree of difficulty in understanding what the singer is saying, but Derrick Green floats that line between intelligible and death metal singer very well. Definitely one of, if not, my favorite death metal album. 4/5
Never listened to Sepultura or any thrash metal for that matter. Better than I assumed it would be. Not the first album I'm going to reach for, but I liked it and the shredding kept everything interesting without getting into guitar virtuoso wankfest territory.
Interesting heavy music.
good with a morning coffee
I needed that
That’s Heavy fucking metal! What a great album from A band I have never listened to. I can see 5 finger death punch getting inspiration from a band like this. Easy 4! T3B 1. Desperate Cry 2. Arise 3. Dead Embryonic Cells
I liked it a lot more than I expected, not being familiar with the death metal genre. Much more melodic than I expected, with nicely surprising rhythmic and compositional changes throughout that kept me engaged. I liked it! And can see listening to it again, for the strong songwriting and sounds.
I've heard of Sepultura before via a documentary I was watching one time called "Global Metal" but I've never delved into their stuff before. They are a thrash metal band from Brazil, very similar to Slayer. The name "Sepultura" means 'grave' in Portuguese. The title track from this album "Arise" was banned from MTV America due it its apocalyptic religious imagery. I enjoyed this album. The ferocity and speed with which the band approaches their instruments is phenomenal. The beat is complex and ever changing, and the lyrics are heavily influenced by religion, doom, darkness, and war. This isn't something I can listen to every day, and it takes some listening to warm up to (I listened to the album 3 times today) but it is phenomenal in its own right. Favourite songs: Dead Embryonic Cells, Under Seige (Regnum Irae), Orgasmatron, Arise, Murder, Desperate Cry, Subtraction Least favourite song: I really can't pick one... 4/5
quality headbanger metal, but with a darker, more simmery energy compared to the hype-thrash of other classic records. would do my taxes to this album.
Pretty darn good rawk. 4 stars.
Listened Before? N Wow, did I ever sleep on this album and this artist. This came out when I was a tween, and I should have gobbled it up during middle-high school. I didn't. I think I just may not have been ready for it. It seemed scary to a kid who the most intense thing they listened to was a bit of Slayer. The singer's voice is scary to a kid of the early 90's. Anyway, that being said, I'm now far beyond that and I have heard more extreme things on a Sunday morning. This album is a masterpiece of metal. I could tell from the first listen that I had been missing out. The musical talent and energy behind this recording is top-notch. Great stuff! Added to Library: N (but I would have in the past) Songs added to playlist: Desperate Cry
Ahh, good old fashioned thrash. A very fine soundtrack to the morning commute. Like a shot of caffeine right in the tearduct.
The album is OK. I like the hooks and riffs, very memorable thus far. I'm not super big on metal, truthfully. The most metal thing I listen to is Metallica. But I can definitely vibe with this, and I like the mood it creates.
What a ride. Great pace and intensity.
Sepultura ARISE!
Shit rips.
One of the albums that got me into metal. Still very good, but a little too much polka for my taste.
First; Igor is an absolute beast behind the kit. Few combines the incredible speed and sheer power that he puts behind every hit. Arise is where I really start paying attention to the Sepultura discography. Venturing further away from their death metal roots (get it? lol) and experimenting with latin instrumentation and industrial really suits their take on thrash metal. I say this with absolute no knowledge of the subject whatsoever, but this is one of the greatest records to come out of Brazil in the early 90’s.
Rightly brutal and helped me work off the bad mood I was in when I listened to it. Not as much of an impact for me as Roots is which came up for me to listen to a couple of weeks ago
I don't even like thrash metal that much, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. I'd definitely listen to it again and I plan on checking out their other records. Pretty good stuff!
4/5
A very dark album . They created an apocalyptic mood throughout the whole album . Particularly loved the title track and the Motörhead cover of Orgasmatron.
Shows no mercy
A solid thrash metal album that is quite similar to Slayer's 80s albums from Reign in Blood and onwards with some Megadeth thrown into the mix. It doesn't have the same uniqueness as Sepultura's later 90s album which has stronger influences from Latin rhythm and percussion (although I am not a massive fan of the groove metal approach they take, so I prefer this), but is however still a very good album.
Fucking awesome metal album! I would listen to this when I was young and forgot about it. I enjoyed to everloving shit out of this.... 5. I slept on it and will give it a 4.4
I don't know who thought this was death metal but sure Jan okay. Either way, a very solid album with some great riffs and strong vibes throughout.
I enjoyed the metal
7/10 solid metal album but didn't really stand out
Pretty samey but thrash metal is up there as one of my preferred metal subgenres. 7/10
Definitely some solid thrash here. It doesn't hit quite as high as Roots for me, but it proves that early Sepultura was no slouch at all.
The first few songs sound like a pretty basic hardcore/thrash record, but it does get a little more experimental as it progresses. It's enough to separate it from the big four. Favorite tracks: "Altered State", "Subtraction", "Under Seige"
I dig it!
16 year old Jon loved this
Not their BEST album but still one of their best. 🤘🤘
Great energy for an early shift.
Definitely a head banger. Surprised I've never listened to these guys, especially in my youth
'Dead Embryonic Cells' is a very strong track. Not a fan of the formulaic thrash metal sections, but the slower parts are more interesting and nuanced. 7/10, groovy
great band sound, singing can be a little grating but overall powers hard
Best thrash metal I've ever heard
Jope...
Sometimes a bit too unmeldodic/hard, overall quite nice.
Some great metal riffs!
Good workout music! I listened to this while on my bike ride today. Great music just didn't really care for the lyrics.
Sounds like metal from 1991
Played this after Megadeth to continue my attempt to blast the cobwebs out after an all nighter watching England win at the Azteca. Could be a grower.
“Hey, ChatGPT, knock me out a nine-track album of generic thrash metal. I require thumping bass, chugging guitar riffs, growling vocals and the occasional squealing solo.” I’m very late to the Sepultura party—I’ve only just arrived—and Arise certainly isn’t bad. But to my ears, it’s generic thrash with very little feeling or personality of its own. On the plus side, they beat AI to it by about 25 years.
Would not buy
Not my type of music
Musically, a lot closer to a lot of stuff I like, but just a bit too heavy for me
The heaviest of metal 🤘 Nothing overly exciting for me.
Another pretty solid metal album to back up Ministry last week
I know these guys just never listened to them. and the original lineup with the Cavalera brothers, I do love some Soulfly but never got into these guys.
More standard metal than their future Roots, so I liked it a bit less. Still very powerful shit.
Thrash just ain’t really my thing so i won’t rate it high, but that said, it is really good for Thrash, very much alike a Metallica album. No standouts because it really blended to me.
I’m not big on metal but I surprised myself by liking Roots by Sepultura, mainly because I thought the addition of latin rhythms was really interesting. This one doesn't really have the rhythms, but I still quite enjoyed it, so maybe I just kind of like Sepultura?
Noice. Pretty cool guitar playing. Not my typical thing.
I'm not really into metal but this is really good. It's almost like prog-metal to me. Every time that double bass drum kicked in it stepped up the intensity of the song to a new level. So much energy here.
Not for me but I trust the metal fellas
#957. Not their best album, it seems, but decent enough. 3/5: acceptable
Sepultura lijkt me keihard bij een show maar voor thuis moet ik echt in een stemming zijn van fuck alles.
Not usually my bag. But I kinda dig this one. Sharp, concise rhythm. Not a fan of the vocals, but musically listenable. And the cat likes it when I keep time on her butt. So a solid 3.
It doesn't necessarily feel like something incredibly fresh or new outside of some extra punch, but it's solid enough of a metal listen to enjoy
I don’t have the most discerning ear when it comes to metal. This wasn’t bad - not too cheesy, not unlistenably intense, not too long. Pretty fun, honestly. 3?
I’m not gonna mention my hatred for this type type of music speed metal I suppose. But I do hate it.
Decent metal/thrash album. The chunky guitar notes were good. 3/5 Might listen again
Some decent thrash-ish metal, but a) I don’t feel like there’s anything super unique here, which means b) I don’t feel like we needed more than one Sepultura album. Especially when Iron Maiden is underrepresented.
This is really not my thing, but I mopped the floors and washed the windows while I listened to this and it made me feel like a teenager who's mad about doing chores. I appreciate it.
Another Sepultura album from the generator. I remember with the other one my complaint was that it was too long but this one is just perfect in length. And the songs are bangers 3/5
Lagom tufft!
3.4 3x great album
You can hear why this is such an influential album and why it holds up 35 years later. The album still sounds fresh and vibrant today. But the downside to Max has always been that his songs get real same-y real fast.
A metal album to end the week! I got some enjoyment out of the title track. I’m not a huge metal person, I prefer lighter rock, but I can definitely hear this absolutely slaps. That guitar solo was lovely. The name “Dead embryonic cells” made me cringe slightly, but the actual track was quite good. The guitar solo in murder really got me! I thought it was pretty great, basic but I enjoyed it. Subtraction was great! I felt I could really rock out to it and Altered state which followed. I enjoyed under siege less. It had some cool effects, but I felt that they didn’t fully work. Meaningless movements had such great drum work. I loved the solo again in infected voice. Apart from the name, orgasmatron was decent and CIU was aight too. 3.5/5 136/1089
Cool metal album. Felt a bit repetitive tho
bacano, me pareció un flow cool pero un poco too much
Goes hard. I bet the drummer’s got legs like tree trunks. It’s not really my thing but it’s definitely a great example of the technical skill that goes into good metal. Listening through a full album starts to reveal a lot of the pattern though, so it gets a bit repetitive.
This is everything you can expect from a great metal album. Lead Singer sounds like metal. Guitars shredded metal style. Drum skins beaten mercilessly. Just metal.3
I mean this is very formate heavy metal this is what I’d properly define as “heavy metal” as stuff pre 1990’s isn’t really what is commonly defined as heavy metal TODAY lmao. It’s not anything too flashy but it’s cool
My opinion on this artist may have improved since I got them over 400 days ago, but this is actually pretty good metal. It’s loud, it’s fun and it’s Brazilian and it does a good job with what it has. Props to the drummer.
incredible shredding for background music
is ok
Energy goes hard but for sure not an everyday listen
a bit hard but also not very creative.
First time listening to Sepultura. I am biased toward this genre owing to a love of Metallica in my youth. In this regard the album feels comfortable - every song sounds like it came from Master of Puppets or And Justice. From a sequel perspective (i.e. “I wish I had more Shortest Straw”) I enjoyed this, but over long haul it comes off Kenny Bania. Points for sounding exactly like Metallica. On next day, second listen I couldn’t get over the hacky copying. I suppose a 5 for sounding like Metallica; a 1 for doing it so silly. 3/5
As someone who is really only just starting listen to and explroe Metal, I found myself thoroughly enjoying this album for the most part. Whilst I'm giving this 3 stars now, I think in the future this will likely rise to a 4 star rating, great stuff.
6/10
Perfect mowing the lawn super fast music.
I listen to metal quite a bit but Sepultura never really hit it for me. I can see where newer bands took inspiration and I don't think the songs are bad. Mostly I just feel like I have head it done better by other bands.
I listened to this album once as I was making pork bowls for dinner, then again while driving to work the next morning. The moment I started this album, I was punched in the gut by the heavy, pounding, propulsive beats and strong drum rhythms which sounded like a machine gun. This style of monotonous metal has never done much for me, even though I can acknowledge the sheer amount of skill required to play at this level. While there are some exceptions, I typically like metal more when it's slower and contains more clear orchestral influences; the rapid-fire sound typically just washes over me. In the case of Arise, I usually wound up losing interest when the vocals kicked in, because these moments typically ushered in change in instrumentals which took them closer to that aforementioned rapid sound. Again. none of these things are truly negatives, it just means the music here is not for me. I will say that I respect the way Sepultura implement occasional moments of more diverse influences before giving way back to thrashing metal, and more than many other albums I've heard, Arise sounds exactly like its cover art. Highlights: Dead Embryonic Cells, Under Siege (Regnum Irae)
I had a boyfriend when I was 15 who loved Sepultura while I loved the Lemonheads. I remember trying really hard to like this so I could fit into his world. It's really not bad and I can see myself listening to this if I need to hear something intense, but I don't think I'll be adding any songs to my personal playlists so it's a 3.
Solid. I love thrash and heavy music. The heavy rhythms in this album are outstanding and a great example of Brazilian influence on metal. Nonetheless, it is not my favorite example of heavy music.
Maybe I am starting to turn a corner on this genre because I was actually enjoying this. Wasn't particularly in love with it but definitely jammed to it a little more than I did their last album on here.
Great guitar music, but death metal screaming is not my thing.
I think I have to be in a very specific mood for this, and I was in it.
metal
As far as metal goes for me, pretty interesting. My problem with the genre at large is its lack of versatility - all sounds the same to me. But it still slapped during my morning workout Highlights: CIU
2.5 rounded up to 3. Good thrash. No memorable songs.
It was fine, but not for me
They now their instruments well, but it's basic thrash metal most of the time. That genre is for the most part just not my cup of tea.
Good
I didn’t know this band when it came out, about two years after my metal phase. It is good, old-fashioned speed metal. Well-played too, not just speed for the sake of it. Definitely a fan
I wasn’t expecting trash metal today but I’m not mad about it.
Arise is a well-structured and powerful metal album, however, I don’t find many emotional hooks. It feels more focused on precision and intensity than on atmosphere or emotion.
First couple songs hit pretty hard before it started sounding ‘samey’ to me (which I’m sure it isn’t, but I don’t have metal ears. I would give it another listen or cherry pick some songs.
Arise 3.4 Dead Embryonic Cells 3.5 Desperate Cry 3.3 Murder 3.5 Subtraction 3.3 Altered State 3.5 Under Siege (Regnum Irae) 3.6 Meaningless Movements 3.3 Infected Voice 3 Score: 3.377777778
Great early 90’s metal album
I just didn’t feel it. It’s OK? But Sepultura are supposed to be this genre-bending influential metal band, and I just didn’t ever feel like I was listening to something transcendent. It was fine, but forgettable.
This is a very good thrash metal record. A genre I'm not particularly into but know enough to appreciate. That said, it's really just a straight up tribute to early Metallica, Slayer and Maiden. So why did I need to hear this particular record on top of the ones from those seminal acts? Because these guys are Brazilian? Sadly, not one iota of Brazilian influence here. Solid record, though
Not sure I have much love for thrash, after having heard a few on this list. Fun fast metal with dumb lyrics. There is a lot of variety on these tracks. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? No Owned: No 59/236 (24%) Will I get: No
Nice to see some metal on here. it's been a while. Not a bad album at all, but not really a relaxing album that I'd put on regularly, however I did enjoy listening!
Early Metallica but a lot heavier and without the catchy tunes. Didn't love the singing style, liked a lot of the guitar tone. Just felt it could have done with some catchier tunes.
Spare a few unique time signatures and interesting riffs, most of this listened as pretty standard thrash metal. Interesting to hear some Brazilian metal, though. 3/5
Trash metal : )
decent metal album some really good songs
Primeira vez ouvindo Sepultura, curti bastante, vou voltar mais nesse album.
Yes, Brazilian heavy metal is a thing, but it’s not always my thing.
*1991. Brazilian heavy metal. *If you told me this was Metallica, I would believe you (up until the vocals - which are more Brazilian Rammstein). *This was pretty melodic and accessible for metal. *I actually like it. RATING - 7/10
Great metal, I just can’t stand the vocals in this stuff.
Like the drumming and the instrumentals. I can only consume metal in small doses, though.
I do like a bit of Brazilian death metal.
Relax, guy. It’s all a bit silly. And not Sepultura’s best.
I liek a lot
Wow! Not the music I would necessarily associate with Brazil, but that’s what makes this list enjoyable. I wasn’t particularly looking forward to listening to this when I read what sort of music it was but man these guys can play, singing leaves a bit to be desired but far more fun than ever imagined.
Good drum fills throughout (those are what make or break a metal album in my opinion) Vocals weren't totally inaudible. I didn't feel the urge to skip any track. 3/5 won't listen to again
Better then expected
Not my favourite genre, but this was very good
Sepultura- I like the crab monster on the cover art. I was more familiar with their album Roots that had more of a slower groove nu- metal style. This is way more thrash which is cool but not what the band does best I don’t think. Some cool riffs and some really cool drumming with all the double kick stuff and crazy fills. I don’t know if it’s the mix, but feels like it should be heavier/thicker sounding maybe more bass or it’s the snare sound. Wish they had a more versatile vocalist. I like these kind of grunty vocals every once in a while like in a bridge but I don’t think they give enough melody to the music.
This was cool, i enjoyed listening but didnt feel super memorable. I wish it felt heavier, riffs were good but not great. Felt kind of derivative and not sure why its on the list.
Maybe it was just the mood I was in, maybe this album is better than most other metal albums I’ve heard on this list so far, but really not that bad.
Thrash metal. Arise sounds like a Metallica/Slayer copycat. It's decent but not groundbreaking? There is a bit of the industrial in there too, but very little. Altered State has a nice atmospheric intro. Shame it just ends and isnt incorporated into the main track. Best track - Desperate Cry, Altered State 3 stars
Meh
I think I like metal now
I found 'Arise' far more enjoyable than Sepultura’s previous entry on this list. It leans into a more straightforward early ’90s thrash metal sound, which made it a much easier listen overall. I was still a bit worn out by the end, but nowhere near as drained as I was with 'Roots,' where the vocals really started to wear on me. The vocal approach here is slightly less guttural, and the classic metal guitar riffs are sharp, effective, and consistently on point. That said, there isn’t a ton of range across its 46-minute runtime, so it ultimately settles at a solid 3.5 out of 5. It teased the possibility of a full 4 early on, but just doesn’t quite get there.
This is right in the pocket for 16yo me. Though I was aware of Sepultura back then, I just never got into them. Listening to this now, I know I would have loved it. Now that 52yo me has listened to it, I still dig it. This is straightforward thrash metal and is fucking great. Having said that I really preferred the tribal rhythms that were interwoven throughout their Roots album more than this.
The playing is amazing(hence the 3 stars), but I just can't get past the lyrics and the vocals of this genre
too metallica
Really wanted to love this, because the music itself is perfectly fine. But I REALLY hate the singers voice. I saw another reviewer describe it as sounding like cookie monster and sadly that sums it up really well. Also some of the lyrics are kinda cringe. 3/5 I guess?
I don’t listen to this genera of music often, but I think what makes an album a classic is if it sounds like what I could hear today.
good, not my favorite, but good
It's a good album, but slightly too long and repetitive.
Totally get why it's here, just doesn't do anything for me.
Good album The band is really good but the singer/songwriting could be better 6.5/10 3.8/5 best: Altered State Worst: Under Siege
Totally not my thing. 3 stars because I can’t judge if it’s bad or good.
banger
Just alright. Leans into a level of incoherent that while high octane, wasn't engaging.
ultra ultra
There are some cool things here. People tend to go straight polarization with country and metal. They either make it their identity or thumb their nose completely and disengage. There is a place for both in the musical continuum but they do had more distinct times and places than some other more traditionally “mainstream” genres. I’ve gotten better at being open to listening and engaging lately. But I still have to do it on my own the wife and kids ain’t here for the Brazilian metal…
I had really low expectations for an album that contains songs called “Dead Embryonic Cells” and “Orgasmatron,” but this really wasn’t that bad.
Metal is such a rapidly changing genre from decade to decade, and sometimes even year to year. The artists who stick it out and evolve are keynote. As a youth I always enjoyed Sepultura as noted in my last review of Roots. But it is really engaging and exciting to listen to this album that predates the grunge nu metal sound and shines a light on the pure unadulterated Thrash metal sound. A tough listen for those with weak ears. As my buddy mike said "Turn the good shit up. Yerrr".
This album clearly was groundbreaking for its time, and it's pretty fun to listen to. But a bit repetitive. Some fun singing and little flourishes here and there.
It’s a little rough around the edges, but I really appreciated the rhythm, especially the double bass parts.
Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I do. Not totally for me, but I didn’t hate this and wouldn’t mind hearing this again! Don’t know much about the genre, but this sounds like pretty solid metal to me.
Seems ok for angry rage music.
511/1001
Drums: chopsticks played on a damp pizza box Vocals: recorded while straining on the toilet Bass: what bass? Guitar: pretty sick
Never been a fan. They were top quality at what they did, but just not my thing.
I'll echo what I said about the slayer album the other day: you know what you're getting into with this one and none of it is very surprising. That being said, I did enjoy this album more than the Slayer album, there were some pretty interesting tracks. Probably not quite enough to warrant an extra star, but close. The album art is cool. Favorite track: either "Murder" or the "Desperate Cry" alternate mix
Amazing musicianship to say the least. No song really made me take notice and headbang as I thought they might.
Some nice guitar rifts. Definitely a hard driving thumping energy. Songs sound too similar though.
I remember standing in the record store trying to decide between buying Arise or Roxette’s Joyride. I ended up buying Joyride but I have only vague memories of the tracks it contained (other than the title track). All of Arise’s tracks I still know by heart after all these years because luckily my friend Thomas dubbed me a tape and thanks to him I‘ve been revisiting one of the most formative records of my entire life today.
These dudes chug and doom.
Love the energetic, frenetic drumming often found in these metal albums, the almost overstimulating nature seems to calm me for some reason. Metal really feels like the most maximalist music, really cramming as much drum into every fill, as much guitar riff into every solo, and as much scream into every vocal. Musically, I really enjoy this. Lyrically, it’s alright, sometimes it’s a bit too much. Also, sometimes metal singers sound like Cookie Monster to me and that’s pretty funny. Anyways, I’m adding this to my workout repertoire.
I hadn't listened to metal, like real metal in a long time. This was fun to throw back to. I had never listened to this album or artist before.
Doesn't sound dated which was nice, but not a fan of the amount of screaming.
decisamente ghiozzo
Swap this one for Chaos A.D. and it's a win!
That eye is freaking me out, subtitles needed, this guy needs therapy, out of this world drumming.
Nice example of the genre.
This is the moment Sepultura evolved from a straight forward death/thrash metal monster more akin to their Norwegian counterparts, incorporating more industrial sounds, particularly on tracks like Dead Embryonic Cells and Orgasmatron, where you can almost sing along. Definitely a groovier record than Beneath The Remains. As hardcore punk was likely making its way onto turntables in Brazil, you can see it starting to impact the band as it clearly present on Subtraction and to some extent on Desperate Cry with its tribal drumming pattern at the beginning leading into more blast beats. Subtraction is just a great track. Perhaps my favorite on this record as my listening taste is more punk rock than metal. Looking where metal is today, it’s pretty obvious that Sepultura had figured out that they would have to evolve or die. That choice in 1991 is probably the reason they still exist as a band and why this album is so popular today. Other highlights include Meaningless Movements, Orgasmatron, C.I.U. (Criminals in Uniform) and the opening track Arise. Honestly, listening to this record in its entirety for the first time was interestingly very enjoyable. I’d heard various tracks in mixtapes or in isolation, not as a whole meal. The meal was good. Is it a perfect record? No and given the evolution of my tastes some of the guitar work comes off as cheesy (see Infected Voice). There is also a mix issue with the record as the vocals are buried a bit on several tracks which makes this more sludgy than thrash.
This one sounds so different from Roots to me. Moreso straightforward metal without as much groove and syncopation. Max Cavalera still sounds like a madman. Pretty cool riffs.
Not a fan of the screaming metal much, but this was better than most. 3 stars or C+.
sick drumming, but can only take in doses
LOL metal is so corny. Fun enough, I wish they would do more of the brazilian/samba sorta shit, which I read was on here but couldn't really detect. Would help it stop sounding just like the slayer and iron maiden etc.
Heavy, very heavy. But no so absurdly metal that it's unenjoyable.
Better than another skinny british guy
thrash metal, all songs seemed similar
3/5
Not a thrash metal fan. So no opinion.
Neat to hear history in the making for this genre! However that said, this genre still doesn't really do it for me-- I like the instrumentation but can't get into the vocals.
Certainly not my favourite metal ever, but a damn sight better than Slipknot. Helps that this is more on the thrash side than the nu-metal side; the latter genre just has this stench about it for me that makes me not like it, whereas thrash metal I can headbang along to. Very solidly played stuff here!
I certainly did not expect something like this on here. Fun time though. Made excellent driving to work music.
I was dreading a death metal listen, and my first reaction WAS to hate it... But my constant headbanging proved otherwise. This is fuckin awesome actually, kickass drums and guitar shredding nonstop. It's just shy of a 4 because I don't think it's entering the rotation, but I'm certainly more open to this genre now. Slipknot could never. Standouts: Dead Embryonic Cells • Desperate Cry • Altered State
Is this one of the finest examples of death metal ever? I'm not sure. I can appreciate it, but an hour of this is a lot. Genuinely have no frame of reference for this album at all, but hopefully we get more metal in this challenge and I might adjust my rating later. 2.5 rounded down by the rules of our challenge. EDIT: I was informed it is not actually an hour long and I was fooled by bonus tracks so I upgraded my review to 3/5.
I kinda like metal
its alright. i like metal, but heavy metal vocals like this aren't for me
Hmmmm . Not my favourite sepultura
I remember when this came out. It's not a bad album but it's too much of a clone of Metallicas sound at the time.
It's a great example of what it is: heavy and loud.
This was interesting
2,5
I don't listen to enough metal to really know what's good and what's great but had a decent time with this one. Some real nice drumming. Would give 3.5 if that was an option
Pretty good, a bit heavier than my usual style but I probably wouldn't seek this again 3
A landmark in extreme Metal - pretty extreme.
Whenever people talk about the holy four of Thrash, this is the album that I reference in argument that Sepultura could easily swap out any of the bands on the list. 3.5/5
This metal album is pretty enjoyable and also driving. However as the song progresses (8-10) it started to become repetitive which made it dry for me to listen through the whole entire track. I think the instrumentals were great but the vocals isn't what I like. I don't know if it is because Im not a huge metal fan but the vocals in the album were weird and clunky.
Not exactly my cup of tea. But definitely technically proficient. My brother is a big fan of them and that has certainly rubbed off on me a smidge.
I liked this better than the previous album, I found there was less "growling". It was good, but it's just... so exhausting. The album needed some light with the shade. Top tracks: Title track, "Dead Embryonic Cells," "Desperate Cry"
I like it enough but I can't shake the feeling that it's just another heavy or thrash metal album, albeit from guys in Brazil. I think their other album on this list had a little more variety to it. Given that this album came out in early 1991 and by middle of 1991 Metallica changed the whole metal scene with their Black album, this album feels even more standard fare. Angry, frantic, heavy. Cool at times. But not overly noteworthy.
I liked the other Sepultura album on the list (Roots) except for the growling singing - it had a unique sound that warranted inclusion on the list, even if I didn't personally like the style. This one didn't really grab me, although I could handle the growl more for some reason. Every time I tried listening closely I found I wasn't all that interested. Except for a few interesting moments here and there, every song followed the same structure (with almost always the same thrash drum beat). Oddly, it worked as rocking background music for me, strange as that is to say. I'd say it's a 2.5, but I'll call it a 3 and move on. Tracks that caught my attention: Arise, Desperate Cry, Under Siege (Regnum Irae).
Fine
