Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Tokyo is a phenomenal track.
Hadn't heard of this album or this artist. Seeing the cover gave me no clue as to what to expect. I'm about halfway through the fourth track and I do not quite know how to process what I'm hearing. As the sixth track starts I notice the album was released in 2017, and I'm starting to feel like maybe I overestimated the project and the reveal that would make sense of all this just isn't going to happen. Track ten has me wondering if that's Kendrick Lamar lending his words to the groove and a little research verifies it, along with contributions from Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, and Pharrell. Very jazzy, funky, smooth yet trippy.
Well, this is a new one for me (band/person and album). It's hard to imagine that this is the third album by Thundercat (why would there be two other albums like this?), but also a bit confusing about why this album and/or Thundercat got included in the 1001 album collection? Many of the songs feel like some sort of pseudo-jazz inside joke among a close group of friends, of which we aren't part, although I guess there's a bit of a heavily ironic social-commentary aspect to some of them (like on "Bus in the streets"), or else kind of vanilla soul-like songs with a lot of 80s-sounding instrumentation. There's also some impressive, and impressively fast, ensemble playing in some of the songs (like "Uh uh"), and I'm impressed at how he got so many well-known names to contribute to the album (and I enjoyed "Show you the way" as well as "Drink Dat"), but I'm left wondering why? That said, "Tokyo" is a fun song all in its own right, but overall it's not all that interesting, at least to me. Sadly, the Wikipedia entry for the album is bizarrely vapid (and a bit confusing, especially with the references to discs 1-4). However, the entry on Thundercat himself is a bit more revealing, and I have to say I'm blown away to know that he was a member of Suicidal Tendencies, as this is about as far as you get from Suicidal Tendencies, so kudos to him. (Sadly, he wasn't part of Suicidal Tendencies' side project Infectious Grooves.) Mainly, though, I just can't imagine listening to this again.
Enjoyed the smooth stylings though the lyrics generally weren't quite up to the music. Not something I'll listen to again though, just not my thing.
Ok
I really like the concept and I really want to like the music. I wish I was smarter in bass
I love wat Thundercat does and how he expresses himself. A full album of the guy is just beyond what I can handle.
Great production quality, and some rhythms were catchy, but some songs were not good in the slightest
Not a big fan of synthesized music but I did enjoy listening to this album.
Not really for me but it's not bad background music
Pretty easy to listen too and makes for good causal background music but not my choice for focused listening.
Не ужасно, но скучновато
Them changes Walk on by Lava lamp
I liked this music but will be happier to hear more new albums.
3.5/5
listened to this album through before doing the 1001 albums, and it is a staple of this generation however there is great and there is shit amongst them
Unfortunately for Thundercat I have heard George Duke, The Isley Brothers and Frank Zappa before. But I quite liked this, and might even return to it. At least it is a proper album, it's good to hear people will still go into the studio and put a whole collection of songs together on purpose, this feels crafted. The rapping on a couple of tracks actually breaks the mood for me and seems spurious. A rare thing, a fairly recent album that should be on this list.
'Drunk' sounds like 70s Adult Contemporary, mixed with old school funk and modern hip hop, with lots of references to alcohol and old video games. I appreciate that it really doesn't take itself very seriously at all, but I'm not sure the novelty really merits an entire album. It does have some fun tracks though, including 'Uh Uh', 'Friendzone', and especially 'Them Changes'. For my taste, the album suffers from a lot of filler. It's definitely unique though.
A Fan's Mail Lava Lamp Show You The Way Them Changes 3AM
Aika kiva, kesäiseen säähän cool. Mutta Blood orange tekee tämän genren mielenkiintoisemmin. Ovat aika samanlaisia. Ehkä pituutta olisi voinut napsaista yhden biisin verran - hassun pitkän tuntuinen, kun biisit olivat lyhyitä vaikkeivät siltä vaikuttaneet kuunnellessa. Se oli vähän latistavaa. Vahva kolmonen.
Too light for me
Weird but good
Like the vibes but a lot of the songs sound a bit too similar
This isn't my favorite style of musical mashup, but I appreciate the musicianship and vibe.
This was strange. I didn’t mind it but I don’t know that I’ll return to it. I’ve been aware of Thundercat for a while now, he seemed to blow up out of nowhere a few years ago. I know he is an accomplished musician, but the songs on here just didn’t really excite me. It would almost make good background music but it’s just a little too weird for that. I mean that in a good way. I like that he’s making the music he wants to make and is not compromising to get a hit.
- Possibly the most recent album I have had on this list so far? I was somewhat surprised that I knew nothing about it. - A totally pleasant listen; in fact, it is all incredibly relaxing. But it also never seemed to deviate from the first 5 minutes of material.
Intriguing. I grew a bit tired towards the end, but “Them Changes” is great and I enjoyed the sound and unique vibe.
Really eclectic soundscape. Not unpleasant, but very random.
Not bad.
Funnier than I was expecting, real wit in the songwriting.
Bonne vibe, assez inclassable au passage.
I listened to this at least 5 times because I just can't work out if it's good or not. The instrumentation on it is fab, and clearly these musicians are far more talented than I could ever be. But it's not particularly cohesive, sometimes it feels like it's being weird for weirdos sake and Im just not convinced that it's /actually/ good. I'm bumping it up to 3 because it's trying something new, and I imagine Thundercat is leaning into his (their?) strengths, but I just don't know...
first listen. pretty cool but i doubt ill ever come back to it
I had no idea what to expect, and was completely surprised. Jazz? Club? R&B? Uhhh.
This was deeply weird but also kind of compelling? Some tracks were stuck in my head, like "DUI," "Captain Stupido," and "Them Changes," but others were forgettable. I was new to Thundercat and would give other albums a chance.
Good, maybe it's a 4 star?
Hero
Technically advanced, just not very fun to listen to
Highlights: Them Changes, Lava Lamp, Day and Night, Show You The Way, Tokyo. In a nutshell: 3, 2, 1 let’s jam Smashing electro-jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, yacht rock and pop into bite sized songs. It's tasty. The flavour doesn't last til the very end (once I reached Drink Dat I found my low point). Definitely read the 'Songs' section of the album's Wikipedia entry as you go to get an idea of what you're in for. Overall: 6/10
Jaco but more listenable. Solid album but it could’ve been ep length.
Favourite song - Jethro
Interesting, but not my jam.
Well it's smooth, and the bass playing is immaculate. Some fun nerdcentric lyrics. But, overall, I'd classify it as low effort soul/rb. Not a lot of dynamic change, nor the tortured luv singing that algreen or Mr. Gaye, or David Ruffin would bring. Just kinda amelodic high pitched lines that seem like they could interchange songs without much trouble. Modern (in my adult life) R and B feels like it hasn't been exciting since the heyday of he who shall not be named. I would love to be proven wrong.
every song sounded exactly the same except them changes, songs weren’t bad tho, 6/10
What is going on. Kitty cat song. Then we got Steve Winwood. This almost feels like a hip hop project by Tim and Eric. There's some nice bass work going on in some of this. Nice funk. I have whiplash from this album.
When this popped up I was excited for the listen because I had heard one song by him I enjoyed. Great album cover. I'm sick and staying home today. So I'm feeling kind of anxious. There are some alright tracks, but there is too much. Feels like a listen and get work done album. Oh here's the song, Them Changes, cool track. The Turn Down had a nice vibe. DUI sounds like a brodway musical. I wouldn't mind Thundercat doing a musical. In the end it feels like a big Halloween candy bowl of tracks. Just too much, I can't keep track of it in one days worth of listening time. In the future I'll come back.
Some interesting songs, some meh. Standout songs: Friend zone Walk on by Drink dat
vibey, he's better live (more jazzy), but I'm feelin this
Very interesting. Different in a good way.
Odd? Experimental? Soothing? Smooth beats? All over the place but they seem to be having a good time.
3.4 stars rounded down. "Them changes" and "Lava lamp" are the stand out tracks.
Ok
HMMM THIS ALBUM IS WEIRDLY SOOTHING! BUT NOT MY CUP OF TEA 2? WELL ITS LISTENABLE! 3?
kinda funky, but also kinda weird; not really my taste of music
TIL that weird TikTok sped up song is actually Them Changes by Thundercat. "Nobody move there's blood on the floor, and I can't find my heart." I was surprised to see a collab with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins (???) I don't really know what to make of this album. It's got a really chill feel to it but I don't know if I like it or not?
Kind of a pretentious album in the first half. 1970s high pitch lofty sound. The back half is where it's at. Same sound, but the lyrics are about being friend-zoned or going to Tokyo. I swear he mention Dragonball Z and Mortal Kombat, which makes the very serious music really funny and interesting.
Not horrible, not particularly memorable either.
Rating: 6/10 Pretty good album overall. Really enjoyed the mix of soul, funk, and R&B with some hip-hop elements thrown in. Very smooth sound and great production, this is a nice album to chill out to. It started to lose its charm towards the end, the songs throughout sounded pretty similar but the last few songs seemed redundant, wish there was more variety here. Favorite songs: Captain Stupido, Uh Uh, Bus In The Streets, A Fan's Mail, Lava Lamp, Day & Night, Show You The Way, Walk On By, Blackkk, Them Changes. Worst songs: Drink Dat, The Turn Down, DUI.
A bit long. Loved the soundscapes on a number of tracks but the lyrical content was mostly mundane. “Guko fucking destroyed me” made me chuckle, reminding me of my trip to Japan. Will be nice to visit now and again for the rhythms but came across as a number of demo tracks that could’ve been condensed down to a tighter album.
Pleasantly surprising
Haven't really revisited this since it came out and found myself enjoying it far less than I remembered. The very online lyrics don't hold up and many of the shorter tracks feel half baked. I like Thundercat's style but only when all of the pieces come together. 2.5/5
2-3

Eddies guitar work is absolutely unique. And his brothers drumming is sharp and driven. But the lyrics are something only a 14 year old boy could love.
Cool! Not super my vibe, but I dig it a little.
It's too long and inconsistent but the bangers are bangers.
Not really my thing but it was listenable
Friend zone, them changes are my favourites.
them changes the obv highlight. really enjoyed the weirdness of a fan’s mail.
Love that he’s doing himself so completely. Bass is obviously next level. Lyrics feel really sincere in a way I don’t think many other artists have matched. Maybe it’s because they are so stream of conscious. It’s an interesting musical experience but I wasn’t grabbed by anything emotionally and it’s not something I’d necessarily throw on again.
This was a big surprise for me. I had never heard of this artist or album before and it was a great album to listen to while relaxing and doing chores. Would listen to again
Good stuff.
Begon heel kut, werd een stuk beter
I laughed audibly in places.
The basslines on this album are so good, it's outrageous (I mean, it's Thundercat; what did you expect?) Not every track on here is a winner; some feel like they're trying too hard to be out there or weird, and I wish some of them were a bit longer since some are just over 2 minutes. But when a song here hits , it *really* hits.
This is a soul album. But this is also a bass album. Thundercat makes bass music. Thundercat is a bassist. One of the most talented and impressive bassists of our generation. This has other instruments in it, but it is very much centered around his bass playing. This album has a beefy set of songs. It’s only a little over 50 minutes long, but it has 23 songs. This really strange length is due to the songs being very short on average. Like 1 to 2 minutes short. To me, it comes off as bloat. Because some of these are quick, that they make little to no impact on the overall album. They could have been left out, and it would be the same. They are basically interludes. Like does the 25 second long track I Am Crazy really need to be here? I was slightly disappointed at the number of songs that just don’t do anything. None of the features were all that exciting either. Show You The Way is fine, but Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams and Wiz Khalifa don’t necessarily add anything to the songs they are in. Don’t get me wrong though, there are definitely some great songs. When the production is at its best, it has smooth and fast programmed drum beats, combined with one of the best bass tones I’ve ever heard. Thundercat also has a great voice. Them Changes is obviously a huge song at this point, but I still think it’s a classic, and it has one of the best uses of that iconic drum beat from The Isley Brothers. Parts of this album were underwhelming and a bit of a letdown, but I still found enjoyment in it. Rating: 6/10
Decent listen. Talented guy.
Very funky, but not my style.
Nice album, artist felt like they were being pretty genuine and exploring their own experience. I ended up getting kind of tired of the "falsetto with a slow jam" format by the end of the album. It's not like it was too long, the vocals just kind of lost my attention over time. Favorite songs: Rabbot Ho, Them Changes, maybe Drink Dat.
More mellow than I expected. Some great collabs
Wow, totally unexpected. Extremely unique with some amazing bass playing. Some lyrics were just fun others insightful - never knew what to expect from one song to the next, which made it hard not to keep listening.
Some great songs, others not for me!
Quite mellow. The Changes and the Kendrick Lamarr presence on Walk On By are the stand out moments.
3/5. What a trippy, mushy, drippy dream-treat. Some out-there features. Thundercat contains multitudes. I remember well when this came out. A little surprised to see it here honestly, but pleasantly so.
Overall a pleasant album, and I liked some of the jazzy backtracks. But ultimately there wasn't anything that stuck out or was memorable to me.
Honnêtement ça aurait été mieux si il chantait pas avec son si fin filet de voix, le groove était pas dégueu par lui même
A concept album, a stylistic choice, a slow moving train wreck. In the beginning I enjoyed the bass sound and airy vocals. In the middle I became distracted. In the end I just have up.
A strange album, very technically proficient but it left me feeling a little empty and unenthused. I think I could enjoy it more in a different frame of mind. Echoes of Silksonic but not as fun.
I'm glad this exists and I'm really impressed. But for some reason the way it sounds makes me nauseous? I can't explain.
3.5
More cool than interesting. (I don't like numeric ratings, I just give 3 to anyone)
Without context I found this on my list and expected from the album cover it was some kind of 70's schlockfest. Imagine my surprise with the first track suggesting one "beat your meat, go to sleep." Probably not 70's schlock. Then I continued with intrepid funky, yet jazzy fugues, unable to further label what genre to assign. Was this some kind of interpolation of Level 42 + Jamiroquai + De La Soul + ... ? At first I imagined hip hop, with such a groovy bass, but then after a little wikipedia I ascertained that the bass was the main character. Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, etc... What an amusing anomalation.
Super cool. I’ve tried a few times though and always said “yes. This is cool” but never gone any further than that. It doesn’t excite me.
not my style, a bit experimental, but not bad
I was honestly hoping for a little more energy out of this album. Thundercat is a great musician, and he did significant work on To Pimp a Butterfly, which is one of my favorite albums of the 2010s. This music was all good, but it was also mostly really slow and mellow. Not necessarily bad, but generally when I listen to an album by a bassist, I expect more upbeat numbers. 3/5
Weird album but in a good way
Solid funk alt/r&b album
already heard this one
About 15 minutes too long, Snarf!
The fusion style is cool, but the tracks are just too random.
A lot of great stuff on here but quite a bit of it is more mid than I remembered as well. Uh Uh, Them Changes and Friend Zone are incredible but there’s not actually too much more of note here
interesting twist on R&B
Listened to this too many times to enjoy, I think..
This album sounds like the musings of the YouTuber Bill Wurtz, but with more star power. It has an electro/autotune like quality that is very reminicent of Bill's songs. I don't mind it, it's pretty chill and cruisy, perfect for a lazy weekend morning around the house drinking coffee. Best: Walk On By Worst: Jameel's Space Ride
I'm a fan of Thundercat and his style of bass playing and funk/rnb sensibility, but this isn't as good as I remember it. However Louis Cole is on this, and he is good and I love him to bits. He wrote (co-wrote?) and played on two of the tracks on this record, ‘Bus In These Streets’ and ‘Jameel's Space Ride’. Check out his own stuff, you won’t be disappointed.
buena sorpresa
I don’t deny the talent here, but I was bored by the end of it. I wished it was a Kendrick album.
I think this is a solid release. The Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald cameos are a cute nod to the past. I would be happy to listen to it, but it does not make my list.
I think this is fine but not special. I did like the variety of guest artists -- it's a long way from Jim Messina to Kendrick Lamar!
Very good, but not my thing- sonically gorgeous and consistent, but I think Id prefer 10 5 min songs over 20 odd really short songs, as I can only now remember 2-3 tracks specifically
I don't know whether this is genius or madness. It's one of those albums that I think needs a bit more time than the one a day listen. I like that it's playing with chords and structure, but it might just be a mess.
Best thing about it is the cover artwork. The rest is ok if you like that kinda thing.
It was super chill and enjoyable, I just wish it was a bit more fun and danceable. Just Friends was my favourite track, there were clever quips throughput I just wanted it to take off a bit more. Good background tunes for sure. 3.5 stars
I was instantly charmed by the album art, name of the artist, and names of the tracks. The all star lineup of cameos also seemed promising. But no matter how much I wanted to like this, and I did want to like this, I just didn't. It has lots of what I like but it never comes together into a lovable whole, whimsical or otherwise. It's interesting, lots of things going on, so many ideas, the genius is all right there; I'm not sorry to have listened. A disappointing miss.
First time actually listening to this album, a lot of tame impla vibes from this, enjoyed it, I’d say it deserves its place on the list. But not one I’ll rush back too.
This is not my sound, but it is interesting.
Pub music
Soothing vocals mixed with catchy, way-out bass lines. That said, I have to admit that it is quite hard to listen to "Drunk" from start to finish at one blow. Although I'm a fan of Thundercat music, I think this album could have been shorter because after 20-30 minutes it gets way too repetitious. Highlights: Jethro, Them Changes
I like the 70s funk/soul vibe of this, and how soft and calm it is. But I was glad when it was over, it became a total slog towards the end.
Such a strange album in a good way. As a wiseman once told me "Them Changes is a great song to eat potatoes to" Was not expecting a Wiz Khalifa apperance
I honestly don't even know what to say about this. Is it serious? I guess it doesn't matter, cause obviously music can be fun. I think it should be fun. But what even is this album? It's very weird.
This is really, really good. A little overlong and laboured in places, perhaps, but it is very good. Apocalypse is probably a more focused and realised album. 3.5/5 rounded down.
I rarely listen to my copy of this all the way through because of the packaging. 4 10" records at 45 means pretty much constantly flipping. Some killer singles, but it does get long. The percussion is amazing, as is the bass playing - just wish some of the more intricate parts were higher in the mix. 3/5
Not my cup of tea
Weird cool jazz/funk influenced tunes with lush harmonies. Interesting, but probably a one time listen for me.
From album cover to the last song, this is a weird record. Didn't mind it but i'm not listening to it again.
New to me! Will need the right mood for it.
I so badly wanted to love this. I just... really didn't. 2.5 rounded up
All I know about Thundercat is that he's a ridiculously good bassist, played on Kendrick's To Pimp a Butterfly, and played with Mac Miller on NPR. Going in with only that knowledge, this album has more in common with jazz fusion records than what I expected. It has a very clean sound, very smooth. The light, airy vocals also contribute to the very inoffensive easy listening sound. The fact that Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins feature on a track makes a ton of sense. I may have hated this when I was younger but it's really not that bad. I think it achieves the mood it sets out to create. It's just really nice and calming. And funny. There's a lot of silliness here. Good stuff. 6/10
I don’t love every song but I respect how unique it all is 2.75/5
Very fun, very groovy. 3.5/5
Thundercat is all over To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, didn't realize it. Thought that Kendrick was the originator of the sound of that album, but obviously I now know its Thundercat. All of that being said, I really didn't care for this stuff too much. I thought that it was musically creative, but its lack luster without k dot on top. Three star.
Ok, strange. Not unpleasant to listen to, but the album art provides a good first impression.
Weird album
Was close to clicking 4. Definitely unique. But I dunno how often I would throw it on
I am too stupid to enjoy some types of jazz-influenced music.
It's alright. I like what they were going for here, but the execution was a little subpar at times. Still, this was pleasant to listen to.
Conflicting. Half way through my first listen my interest was thoroughly piqued. Three full listens later and I'm torn between praising the ideas/potential, and lamenting the ramblingness of it. I feel like the last eight tracks could have been clipped and the album actually improved as a result. Feel like this was released six months too early.
Cool and new, pretty interesting
Liked this one - really chilled vibes
Ok Chill
Le style est très intéressant, le son a un certain aspect unique et la production est excellente. Mais beaucoup trop souvent l'aspect composition laisse à désirer. C'est prometteur mais il manque quelque chose pour garder l'intérêt.
quite disjointed, but decent "vibe"
Still don’t really get the hype about this. I remember 6music absolutely loved it when it came out, and I never really got why. Still don’t really. It’s quite good, and has some great production, but there’s a lot of filler. When it’s good, it’s great (Where I’m Going, Them Changes, Drink Dat) but when it’s not good it just sort of drifts by.
I didn't mind this at all. Some interesting ideas and concepts, not always well executed. Lyrics are insane. Not sure I'd listen again, but I am pleased I did.
Ethereal R&B, with some very fast guitar/bass/key parts
Is that supposed to be blood in the pool. Because it looks like blood.
Silly fun I thought
Songs too short, should have fewer but longer songs
funky nonsense
Thundercat is kinda like a modern George Clinton. Very experimental and funky and has his own style. This album is alright, I prefer his more recent one. Drunk is an album of shorter songs with plenty of features. It doesn’t really seem to make sense but maybe that’s the intention since it’s called drunk. Either way it’s good and I like it. 6.5/10
Wow I really wasn't expecting Thundercat on this list and this must be one of the more recent releases to appear on this list so far. I got into Thundercat after seeing him on Mac Miller's Tiny Desk concert a few years back- which I've recently been revisiting pretty frequently. Love the meter change in Captain Stupido around 1:00 minute in. There's a lot to digest on this record and I'm glad it's here I think? "Them Changes" is the big one and for good reason. It's a killer tune that uses what I think is 2 or 3 basses- one using a wah-wah pedal which is super weird for a bass guitar as the effect is essentially an EQ filter that rapidly opens and closes and that's a jarring sound for bass. With all of those positives listed, I still wouldn't necessarily say this album needs to be on this list. I think it gets a lot of credit for the flashes of virtuoso bass playing and the fun things like metric modulation and moments of funk-prog.
Thundercat always delivers, solid record
The first thing I saw was 23 songs in 52 minutes and my immediate thought was the R&B version of Ramones? First couple songs in, I thought it was Jazz on speed. But this album's songs and music seemed to continually change as it went along. First time I listened, I wasn't impressed. Then I listened after taking a few tokes and playing Mario and thought it was OK. I mean, I have to be honest. Even listening to a couple times, I'm not really sure how I feel about this album. Nothing stood out that made me think I really need to save that song, but many songs I thought were good. Not great, but good. Good time to mention, I love Michael McDonalds voice and this guys voice/singing was pretty good too. Enjoyed the changing styles. Felt like I heard some Commodores music in there. Grooves were solid in many songs. 2nd song, Captain Stupido - Jesus take the wheel along with beat my meat and go to sleep? Well, OK!! The following songs stood out to me, Show you the Way, Jameels Space Ride, Them Changes and Drink Dat. Best line, I'm just chilling, high as fuck. Friend Zone = The truth! I wrote a lot, so I'll give a 3. I'm still a little undecided, but I've got to move on....... 3
Fffffffffffffffunkyyyyyy and nerdy. 3
3.5 What a ride of rapid-fire electronic jazz this was. For an album entitled “Drunk”, I feel like alcohol is probably not the most ideal drug for listening. In particular, it reminded me of that LSD-inspired Todd Rundgren album we had, being that it feels more like a journey through music than it does a collection of songs. Between references to anime and video games, maybe this is a Millennial/Gen Z take on what Rundgren was going for 50 years ago. The sound and style are also notable considering Thundercat was the bassist for Suicidal Tendencies before this. Clearly the guy is talented though, and I’m glad he had a much more successful and frankly well-done transition out of punk bass playing than Dee Dee Ramone (if you’ve never heard Dee Dee King, prepare yourself before listening). The features on this album are great (and a tad surprising in the case of Mr. Footloose himself), but Kendrick is by far the standout, and a gentle reminder that I need to listen to more of his stuff - maybe I will with this list? Anyway, much like A Wizard/A True Star, while there aren’t a ton of individual songs that stood out to me, I definitely see myself listening to the full thing again. I’m still not entirely sure of my opinion tbh, but I can confidently say this is one of the most unique listening experiences I’ve had, and it will definitely stick with me.
This is a good album, but I found that it's mostly just good while it's on and that it does drag a little bit. The singles here pop and are memorable but overall as an album this is just fine. 7,3/10
Not my style
What a trip, some was great, some was just kind of meh.
background music
A lot of repetitive songs, the riffs, the singing is the same in most of the songs. Though I like the funky influence
Interesting. Kind of all over the place.
This album doesn't quite live up to its cover in terms of where it can take me, but there's enough inventiveness and fun and energy here to keep me listening. Some of it gets a little samesy, but when it's the same as something that's already pretty good, that's fine. This is fine.
Promising start, with shades of Zappa mingled in with the jazzy melodic sensibility of Donald Fagen. At first I liked Thundercat's voice, nice and light, but after a while it the multitracked vocals start to wear. It's weird - there's a bunch of stuff like glitch and dream pop that I should dig here - but it never quite coalesced. The lyrics to 'Tokyo' and 'Friend Zone' irritate. He had two titans of yacht rock in Loggins and Macdonald on deck and gave them the most underpowered cameos imaginable. Feels like one big wasted opportunity.
I think you all covered all the bases with this one. It starts really well, then sort of hits the "rinse and repeat" cycle for a bit too long. I love the freaky-funky-jazzy more instrumental stuff and think those tracks work quite well to break up the other tunes. There just ain't enough of 'em. And yeah, I was like, "Wait, did he just say 'Ladies and gentlemen, Michael McDonald?'" That cameo went buy with a big shoulder shrug. (To be fair: that's my reaction to most of McDonald's music.) This is an odd bird. But I'm intrigued to see where else this cat could take these sounds. I'd be real, real interested to hear his take on a Stevie Wonder record.
I honestly thought I was going to hate this album. But it kept catching my interest. Sounded very 70s to me at times. This was enjoyable, though I don't see myself ever reaching for this one to give a listen to again.
Some of it had me really vibing with it, some of it was just noise, and some of it sounded like boss music from an old video game. The Kendrick Lamar had me scratching my head a bit. It’s like they gave Kendrick lyrics to rap in the studio, without telling what album he’s actually on.
Guess I expected this to be more hip hop and less kind of avant-jazz electronica chorale... I didn't dislike it but it struck me as a little low on variety of sound.
What did I just listen to? HAHA In all seriousness, some of the tracks were actually pretty good!
Thundercat has done very well for himself in a professional capacity. After a stint in famed punk band Suicidal Tendencies, he would go on to feature on a number of fantastic albums including To Pimp A Butterfly, You're Dead!, and Swimming. Working with other people's creative projects, Thundercat is a force to be reckoned with. His bass guitar chops are unlike anyone else in the business, and he's able to inject a neo-soul groove into any track he's on. It's unparalleled. His solo work is, perhaps, underwhelming. Coming from a guy who loves Thundercat, this album feels more like a series of short vignettes stemming from half-complete song ideas. That's why this album is 23 tracks long and only 52 minutes. Drunk has a certain levity and humor about it, making this more of a fun release for Thundercat's goofy musical ideas rather than a serious effort. I'll say now that there's nothing wrong with that, it just kneecaps how good the album can be artistically. The most fruitful song on the album is easily Them Changes, which Thundercat gave more room to breathe. I love Them Changes, and sometimes I wish this album had more songs like it. Thundercat would go on to win a Grammy for his subsequent album It Is What It Is. That album is more or less the same as Drunk, with one supremely good song (Dragonball Durag) and a bunch of half-baked ideas. I hate to say these things because I really do like Thundercat and his musical abilities, I just don't find myself listening to his solo stuff much at all.
Not my cup of tea, really slow and not a lot of cadence
Wicked bass tone and cool beats, but thr song craft is a little out there for me.
i like the beat but i think the cover art is creepy as hell. Still undecided.
Only knew the album from its glowing reviews a few years ago. Listened to it 4-5 times, but could not get into it. Mostly ok, but just a little boring, even though the more accessible songs (Show You The Way, Walk On By, Them Changes) are very smooth (4-5 star for sure).
I was only familiar with some of the contributors on this album, drummer Louis Cole in particular, but not with Thundercat himself. Very interesting jazzy R&B melodies. Still a little bit on the fence with this one, though.
Not bad. Great background
Pretty good. Love the vibe.
Ik snap dit album eigenlijk niet zo goed. Moeilijk te plaatsen. Maar heb toch best wel aardige dingen gehoord.
Verrassend! Ik had er een hard hoofd in, maar het pakte goed uit.
Easy on the ears, but don't see myself committed to musical relationship with Thundercat, as I don't feel a genuine connection. The songs are okay, though a little too bland for my taste, but maybe if I was drunk and desperate, this might be more interesting. Thanks, but no thanks.
Thundercat is an excellent instrumentalist and producer and it shows in basically every track of this album. Outside of that, I find his voice boring and his subject matter often not especially interesting outside of a few tracks. I liked it overall.
Super catchy and TC is a great talent, but I can't get into the style. In some ways the songs just seem so memey that they were meant for a platform like Vine or TikTok. I get pretty tired of it
Really good neo-soul album that has an excentric edge like Flying Lotus, but much more focused on the grooves. I really like this kind of deconstructed music where parts of many styles are glued together in a more or less chaotic way. This feels highly satisfying to me.
This is a great album, no doubt. But the fact that it's a good 50 minutes broken up into smaller chunks results in me having a hard time getting attached to this record. It's as if we had no landmarks or huge moments throughout. It's a long flow of little cool songs. It was all nice, tho.
Always found this album super sketchy, like you could drop ten tracks and expand five.

Listnened Before? N I really liked this. It was modern but funky at the same time. Not something you'd expect in 2017. Retro fun. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Them Changes
I think the first time I heard the album, I gave it a 1 star review. It has gotten better and now I think it is quite enjoyable. 3.5/5
3/5, I do love "them changes" alot. But the rest of the album was "okay".
Suosikkikappaleet Drink dat, Friend zone ja Bus in these streets. Ei niinkään sanoituksien takia vaan musiikin.
Aika erikoinen. Tuntui välillä vähän pitkästyttävältä, mutta parhaimmillaan tykkäsin tässä tosi paljon jazz- ja funkvaikutteista. Joidenkin lyriikoiden huumori ei ehkä ihan uponnut. Suosikit: Uh Uh, Them Changes
It's nice to see evidence that Wynton Marsalis did not, despite his considerable efforts, manage to kill jazz stone dead as a musically innovative genre. This album swings between funny and profound, socially-aware and absurd, light and dark in content, although musically consistent. Despite the 23 mostly short tracks, this is so consistent in overall tone and feel, that I found that, if I didn't really concentrate on what was being played and sung, it tended to all wash over me as a bit background. pretty, a bit funky, a bit of mid-tempo, funk-inflected afro-futurism. OK fun.
Dire que ce connard de Thundercat est présent dans les 1001 albums à écouter avant de mourir, pendant que The Weeknd subit la censure Robertienne.
un po ripetitivo, sembra history af all word su youtube
It's an ok record, just not one of my favourites of the 2010s.
Some interesting melodies and rhythms. Loved the contributions of Kendrick Lamar, Michael McDonald & Wiz.
entre 2.5 et 3 : je suis très neutre sympa en musique d'ambiance mais c'est tout
Good 😊 d this, better than the weeknd
Good and probably great back ground music for a party
I wanted to give this more but it had huge stretches that bored...which is tough considering how short most songs were. The talent and musicianship is there, and it belongs on the list. The guests were shocking and entertaining. Overall, this wasn't memorable though.
A bit odd but enjoyable
Steely Dan on acid
Very weird stuff. Bass player. A little like zappa at forst, then r and b.
this album was interesting to say the least. it had such a variety of featured singers and just overall songs. each song was so different from the last and it was very intriguing.
I listened to this one around the time it came out, and am pretty familiar with the singles. I tried to give it a fresh listen, but I still don't really get the hype! Thundercat is obviously a fantastic musician and I've really enjoyed most of his collaborations with other artists I've heard. But I just don't like his singing voice at all, and I find this album way too repetitive. At 50 mins, I also found that it dragged in places. I'll probably only revist the singles, if even!
This record is like going to Disneyland on drugs. You do it once and never again, very enjoyable tho. First Listen?: Y Fav. Tracks: Captain Stupido, Walk On By, Them Changes Rating: 3/5
Really was gonna give this a 2, some of this is just very challenging, though I’m not sure why. I think the jazziness. Not enjoying the jazziness. His voice I don’t enjoy either, but that “blood on the floor” song is awesome. Unthinking this was in the background at a coffee shop I wouldn’t mind it.
A decent album. Not really my thing, but it is a groovy album with a wide range of features. Thundercat is a god of a bass player and I aspire to be a 10th as good as he is. And his main bass is just insane and I can't imagine trying to stretch my hands around that thing.
First hip hop album I didn't actively hate. It was pleasnt and washed over me. Smooth and nice background - but no idea why it should be on this list. In the 70s this would be a below average soul album.
Very groovy beats in this album that’s what made me continue listening to the whole thing. His voice doesn’t do it for me, I believe it meshes with the beats and all but just not a fan of the voice.
Quite an interesting album, it was a bit quirky, a bit odd, a bit jazzy. The singing was falsetto style, so again quite unusual. It was pleasant to listen to, certainly a bit different but I dunno was missing something. It felt a bit like a curry without the garlic.
I feel like I should like this more; funky basslines and humorous lyrics. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but it's just not in my top albums.
A Throwback, but modern also. Nice voice, colossal playing, but not differential enough between tracks to make it great.
Yeah this was good. Never heard of him, will try other stuff
Interesting sound, that’s for sure. Had a bit of a Kendrick Lamar feel to it which makes sense now that I read up on him. He was also the bassist for Suicidal Tendencies 🤷🏼♂️ Don’t think I would listen again but kept me interested
Funky, but alright.
Super interesting new-jazz/funk sampling, etc. It's very modern, may not age super well, and I think I'd like individual songs better as part of a playlist instead of the whole album at once
Thundercat is a master bassist and this album definitely showcases that. I think Drunk is a little more scattered and less focused than his first two albums but it's still really good.
very chill jazzy modern album, somehow just keeps the thing going on without dropping a beat, might be a bit boring after a while
not my jam, though classy, but really really not my jam
This one was a surprise a fine amalgam of jazz, R&B, hip hop and rock. The playing is first rate especially the bass. The vocals are distinctive and excellent. A very nice discovery. 3.5 🌟
I remember checking this out a few years ago. I liked it, even though I'm not super into this style of music
Hard one to rate as it's just kinda there, although I like the short clip like tracks which keeps the vibe consistent. Nothing bad about it but nothing that truly captured or transported me. Good smoking music (I'm sure)
It was okay. Not a lot of it stood out to me at all. Most of the features were pretty good.
Had some cool vibes to it. I won’t be adding this to my regular listens by any means but it gave me some 70s funk sounds with the modern hip hop which was fun. Overall a bit monotonous and I don’t know that I’d want to listen to more than a song or 2 at a time.
One of the strangest albums I've listened to. 1/ Album cover looks like some 70's low-budget slasher movie soundtrack 2/ the sounds are 80's R&B elevator wallpaper muzak 3/ the lyrics are borderline dodgy explicit I'm thinking this would be a great gang from 'The Warriors' called 'The Thundercats'. They could suddenly ambush you from all sides carrying blades and nunchucks singing smooth R&B with dancemooves and singing "We're going to KIIIIIIIIIIIILL you!!!" Classic.........
Lovely mellow jazzy soul. Crisp beats, 70s style falsetto voice and Steely Dan/Doobies feel (and look, Ladies and Gentleman here’s Michael McDonald…). Bit of rap to show its 2017, although as a dark skinned Brit I still feel uncomfortable hearing the N word particularly in such pleasant context. Overall a breezy, well made, light-weight album.
I appreciate the production and general progressive R&B direction but there is a lot for me that it becomes exhausting after 10 tracks and I'm kind of over it unfortunately. Clearly a super talented guy.
Pleasant, funky, surprisingly gentle at times, would listen to again without consciously opting for it over other stuff.
Transitions were fun but a bit too long
I like the relaxed vibe. I think the album should be half as long as it is, though.
Qué coñazo. How much weird is too weird? This weird
Wanted to like it, just slow. Good background music.
This strikes me as one of those albums that will get dropped in a future edition. Enjoyable, but nothing I needed to hear before I die. Tracks that caught my attention: A Fan's Mail, Friend Zone, and Them Changes.
3.75
Funky
"Drunk" is a cosmic helping of scattered, schizophrenic funk and neo-soul from Thundercat. I remember it being all the rage at the time of its release, and at the time I tentatively dipped my toe in and then quickly got a bit lost. After giving it a few more listens, it's started to work its magic but still feels like it's lacking some focus. 23 tracks over 51 minutes is quite an undertaking, and many of them come across more like frenzied snapshots for the meme generation. In the first five minutes alone, there's a soulful harmonised intro, a disarming "beat yer meat, go to sleep" mantra, and then the bonkers fusion excursion with "Uh Uh." For every fully fledged song like "Show You The Way", "Friend Zone" or "Them Changes", there's an "I Am Crazy" which is over before you know it's begun, or "A Fan's Mail", about Thundercat's wish to become an actual cat. For all the inconsistencies, there's certainly a LOT of innovation going on here within each track. Soulful vocals and harmonies, interesting modulations, unusual time signatures (hello "Blackkk") and plenty of sonic gimmicks. The production is ear-grabbing, managing to be forward looking while also revelling in retro stylings. Listen to the drum machines and plasticky synths in "Tokyo" and "Jameel's Space Ride", sounding like they were made with Casio keyboards: a lot of fun. Drunk is a decent listen and will probably reward more goes, but I almost got whiplash from some of the tracks whizzing by so quickly and wished we could have stayed in some of the grooves for longer. The more wallowy slow jams (particularly in the back half) didn't do much for me either: much more a fan of the upbeat stuff.
If there was a three and a half, I'd give it three and a half.
Liked the jazzy bits more that the hippity hoppity bits. Sounds like 18 bass players on a late night out and too much cocaine.
Never gave this a real listen when it came out. Enjoyed it. Can see myself picking this up every now and then.
This was an interesting mix. Lots of funky beats and grooves but overall it didn't seem to be saying much. Also some occasional over-the-top silliness that took me out of the moment. At its best it felt like a cool 70s psychedelic funk album, but at its worst it gave off edgy memelord vibes.
Didn’t remember the first time, read reviews before second. Agree with the background muzak, then read the young creative jazz fusion which helped me enjoy better. Solid 3
cool chill not my type
Not enough bangers, maybe it will grow on me.
It's supposed to be fun music to chill to, don't take it so damn seriously people! 3.5/5
A lot of the songs were hit or miss for me, not really standing out in any special way. There was a lot of muddling together in the songs that appeared in this album. The songs with guests were the strongest. 'Tokyo' had some great instrumentals if not lyrics, which I feel like encapsulates most of the songs on the album. Overall, I'd describe this album as "bizarre but in a kind of good way?"
Didn't hate it, but didn't make much of an impression on me either
This album was only in the 2018 edition of the list, it is removed for the 2021 one.
The musical craftsmanship is superb, it’s an eccentric dreamscape with quirky melodies and driving groove keeping the album moving forward cohesively. It’s a confusing first listen though, it’s a fun sound but it perhaps gets a little samey throughout as the gimmick gets tiresome. The frantic baselines and odd vocal harmonies make the album hard to fully enjoy. It’s a lot to take in, and at some points I actually don’t want to take it in. It’s beating me over the head with its quirkiness and it gets irritating. Musically though it’s excellent and the production is fantastic. 3/5 - I can’t help but think of it as meme music. Sounds too much like Bill Wurtz.
This album felt like a wild ride through another dimension. I appreciate it. The funky, bass heavy sound is like nothing else I’ve heard. Right away the Track featuring Kendrick Lamar, Walk On By, stood out, which is no surprise. It’s not exactly my thing, but I certainly wouldn’t mind taking this trip again.
Very modern, very expensively produced, a bewildering array of guests. Sounds like flylo fm from gta v, which is not a bad thing.
Estilo variado musical con toques tranquilos a nivel instrumental y con voz elegante. Simplemente escuchable
An extremely interesting album filled with unique ideas, concepts and sounds. Not an album I would listen to everyday but a cool experience every once in a while.
Has a funky feel to it. Really a smooth jazz album more than anything else. I feel like I'd enjoy this is a dark martini bar.
I went backwards and forwards on whether to give this 3 stars or 4. On the one hand, it's quite a fun listen. On the other, would I really come back to it? I'll settle on 3. Fave track - "Tokyo" is the funnest!
Funky weird, liked it more the second listen
kind of weird. it's like end of the night party music
Almost a 4. I do really like some aspects of it, the best parts remind me of flying lotus which makes sense since they do seem to collaborate a lot. But its a little overly long and some of the tracks/lyrics are a bit ridiculous at times
The constant return to the sounds of the 70s is exhausting. At least this was R&B 70s. Still.
There were times this reminded me of the impromptu song Buddy the Elf sings to his dad in the movie "Elf." Now he's meowing. Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald reinforced the impression of dissonant soft rock...smooth jazz that puts your nerves on edge. Listening while making dinner, I was asked to turn it off halfway through, as it was neither energizing nor soothing. Definitely intriguing, though.
I am completely unfamiliar with this artist and album. The album cover didn't give the style away either. A smooth, funky jazz vibe revealed itself...a style that has appeal. I did not find it difficult to listen to, and there were often silly/peculiar lyrics. I am not sure that it is really for me though, because it seemed to just go and on and on...
cool i guess. like it’s cool yknow but like i guess. simultaneously a 1 and a 5.
Michael McDonald AND Kenny Loggins on ‘Show You The Way?!’ Sexy.
A very fun album, but just that. There is great artistry and skill, and an excellent project, but it isn't as engrossing as I like my albums to be. It lacks some production and some songs blend into each other with too-similar of textures and synths, but I did enjoy it.
good
Funky. Not bad sounding, I liked it. Just a bit repetitive and all the songs kinda blended together.
Good bass lines from a bassist, with mostly humorous lyrics, not serious. Just flows from one song to the next. Nothing overly grabbed me though, can't say I would ever listen to it again, but good background music for the day. 3.
Perfect Super Mario soundtrack. Adderall anime jazz. Many of the songs feel incomplete or unstable with all the constant modulation, like standing on a slippery surface, or like being really Drunk. B+
kúl
well, this was a pleasant surprise, but it's denied a higher mark by the fact that when it's bad, it's really bad. but when it's good, it's really good.
fun but a bit long. 3
Not bad had it on repeat the other day and I kind of just forgot it was on. I do know if that's good or bad.
Weeb
A lot of stream-of-consciousness nonsense peppered with some cool tunes. Best track: Friend Zone
14. Drunk - Thundercat. 23 Tracks. Had never heard of them before but they really remind me of an early Level 42 sound with high range male vocals similar to Mike Lindup and just missing some heavy Mark King base. I really enjoyed it. It's good, just missing some Mark King thumbage. 3/5
very top heavy album 3.5
Electro jazzihg
Bit jazz fiddly in parts and calm vocals
A very versatile album musically, branching into different genres while still maintain a signature sound. However, none of the songs stand out and the run time is far too long to make this more than just an average album.
Interesting album for sure, nice smooth r&b and electronic beats
Thrown to me immeidately after To Pimp a Butterfly, and it just feels weak in comparison. Some great grooves and track but overall lacks intensity and personality in comparison. Feels almost like he's trying to hard to be avant grade and quirky.
Give bassist Stephen Brunner aka Thundercat credit for being fearless: not everyone would have the guts to mix new soul with jazz fusion and lyrics about beating your meat, not to mention meow-ing choruses. But for now, let's ignore the silliness. Does Drunk work musically? I won't dispute that Brunner is a competent bassist. His songs twist and turn in unexpected directions harmonically. He has a fine falsetto. But some of his keyboard patches suck, as well as the drum machines. And as a personal matter, I loathe soul without grit, so this set is a hard sell for me. The sounds here are smooth, smooth, smooth. So, on an objective basis, Drunk isn't bad, but it rubs me the wrong way. As for the silliness, it's a nice distraction, as is the guest rapping. I actually enjoy Brunner's sense of humor. Thundercat does open up an intriguing possibility. What if someone created a deep soul style that incorporated jazz fusion, funk, and hip hop? Drunk isn't that album, but it's nice to dream.
Usually I think I’d be into this kinda weird music songs about cats. But for some reason this didnt sit right with me, i dunno how best to describe it. It’s like it’s too breathy… like you can smell faint halitosis on each lyric. And it’s a bit boring.
Not bad. Some nice bass. Looked him up and he plays a very nice looking 6 string bass. Some good tracks and sections but a bit all over the place. Not bad though, not bad.
Interesting and worth further listening. Feels a bit light at times, but probably because I wasn't listening in a focused way. Zappa sounds and an interesting concept.
A really relaxed album in terms of listening ability.
Good listen. Funk
Komisches Album
Zoals altijd bij thundercat, het is speciaal. Maar, ik voel hem niet
Okay, I’m liking this. This is a recent album, 2017, and it’s very zeitgeist. “Thank God for technology 'cause where would we be if we couldn't tweet our thoughts? Won't you leave some things to mystery?” Favourite track: “Walk on By”
