Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Oh, good. The cover looks like heroin-chic, circa Y2K. I'm sure this won't be a crude Stroke-alike. This follows my general feelings about Y2K indie. It's not that the music is terrible; it's fine. The problem I have is that, far from an album I must listen to before I die, this sounds just like the bands I used to listen to locally in bars in my early college years, just slightly different (in the way that different regional scenes develop different accents, for lack of a better analogy). This isn't better or worse than the local bands of college kids here in those years (I'm being insincerely polite; it's much less interesting). The argument would then go that this is the essence -- Pete Doherty and Carl Barat are the wellspring from which my college bands flowed. But you can trace this back to Elvis Costello pretty easily and farther if you want. Which is all to say that this music is part of a tradition, which is great! I honour that, I just don't particularly care about listening to it. This reminds of me of the La's, which isn't a compliment (and something I didn't think was possible). Again, this isn't offensive but I can't fathom what could be essential listening about this. It's emblematic of an entirely forgettable moment in music. Strokes > Arctic Monkeys > The Libertines and I think the Strokes are overrated and boring. If you think the Strokes are amazing, learn an instrument and see how quickly you're playing through their work. Twenty minutes, tops. A band that sort of existed alongside and transcended that moment was Coldplay and look how that turned out (musical wallpaper paste with sugar added). What this really does is demonstrate to me how creative and interesting the White Stripes were. They were similarly stripped down (only moreso) but did a much more interesting, authentic and skillful job of replicating early American rock & roll. That was the fucking blues, man. The White Stripes felt like anything could happen and Jack and Meg could back that up. With Pete Doherty, anything *could* happen but that just meant some dude getting thrown out a second floor window. Standouts: 'Music When The Lights Go Out'. If you like this, try listening to Nick Cave or Tom Waits instead. Or Rage. Or Herbie Hancock or Miles Davis or ... honestly, this project is probably for you -- there's real music out there, this just ain't it. 2/5

Joy. More 00s Indie. This one challenged me. There were ideas splashed here and there that could have worked, but nothing ever felt fully executed - making the songs, and by extension this album, weak and forgettable. I even gave it a second and third playthrough later in the day to see if I'd have an "aha moment", but alas, it actually got worse the more I listened. Maybe if they had implemented more structure and chorus to capitalize on the promising parts, this would have landed better. But as it is, it feels rather sloppy and, ultimately, unremarkable. Still, this is one of a very few albums from the 00s that I didn't outright hate, and the fact that I even bothered to listen to it three times says something... though perhaps more about my effort to be open-minded than the quality of this album, itself.

I’m impressed how instantly forgettable this was. I have no idea what I just listened to. Since I can’t remember it probably wasn’t that bad.

Just an average version of punk and new wave.

Raw and unpolished music can be fine, but it needs some charm to it and this did not.

‘Can’t stand me now’ aside - underwhelming. The noise in the music press at the time was that the libertines had revitalised and revolutionised music in the same way as the sex pistols did. In reality I think they were little more than a UK inspired.

Not my taste, but they are obviously talented. I kinda liked the raw unpolished final product.

1) I am liking this song. I like that they are very openly British. I can't say it really builds and has a ton of emotional depth, but I really enjoy the harmonica at the end and it's a good background song for cleaning my room Lowkey I don't like this album But I'll try and tough it out

Not very familiar with The Libertines, I'm getting a the vibe that they were influenced by The Ramones, The Smiths and The Clash right up front. That's a pretty good place to start. Seeing them at a punk club seems like fun, but the lyrics, melodies and delivery don't make a huge impression on me. I keep hearing nods to different bands but I don't feel a strong impression of who the Libertines are. I think the phrase is, "no authentic voice", but maybe that's just 'cause I'm an old codger and everything old is new again.

Extremely shallow throwback British pop rock that never gets out of first gear. Most of the songs sound the same and never offer a second idea once they start. Too long. Feels like a British version of The Strokes, culturally, where a certain generation of snooty music journalists REALLY want you to believe this is the greatest music of all time.

Pretty meh. The vocals were the toughest part, but the rough around the edges garage esthetic is also not for me. 2/5

nicht mein Fall

Glam meets punk? These guys listen to showtunes backstage.

This author's UK bias is clearly showing on this one.

This band’s claim to fame was how hard they fucked their careers because of their drug addiction. Honestly baffled why this was chosen for the list. Not bad enough to be notable, but nit good enough either. Just bog standard.

Outside of a few songs, it's really not that notable. So much generic sounding, soft filler. I was never really into the Libertines at the time, but looking back I can confirm I really didn't miss out on much by avoiding the albums. There's precisely zero oomph to this. It seems to be going for a punk energy, so why does it sound so flat? The guitars are jangly but otherwise completely unremarkable. The vocals are really weak. Maybe it's the recording letting it down? I can't believe this is 42 minutes, I could have sworn it was well over an hour. Really boring.

Den her genre er bare ikke for mig. Jeg har allerede glemt samtlige numre igen

Not quite good enough to be as grubby as it is

This is a very confused album. One song will sound like an adolescent tantrum that would be right at home in the soundtrack for Skins. The next is a swingy jazz inspired call-and-reslonse number. If I were in a drunken stupor I may feel differently

Oh right. I did mean to listen to this more since people at uni were obsessed. I remember from the few listens I gave it that it's not my thing, but I'm really interested to listen with a different perspective now. Disappointed. Takes me back to a time where I felt like the people around me were obsessed with this luke warm pop indie stuff and I felt like I had to be into that too. A boy called Doris feelings though. I've never really been a lyrics guy so maybe I'm missing out on incredible Pete Doherty poetry.

This sounds like just about every other indie rock band that was recording music in 2004. Not sure why it's 15 minutes need to be any longer than that.

Landfill indie that manages to do the impossible and make me wish I was listening to the Strokes instead

When I heard this album years ago it sounded old fashioned. Listening again it sounds even more old fashioned.

Not for me Not a huge fan of his voice There’s some nice songs

It's ok. Not awful but also I don't understand the hype this album generated. There are so many filler songs on here that it could have been released as a 6 track EP easily. Disappointed.

This could have been any early 2000s Brit rock album. You could’ve told me it was Arctic Monkeys and I’d believe you. Not my vibe and a bit of a snooze fest.

Not for me.

Let me get something off my chest. I see that one of the “highlights” of this album is that it’s on a BBC list for the most overrated albums or some shit. How pathetic do you have to be to use some bullshit media poll to form an opinion? Like seriously, form you own damn opinion. These fucking lists are meant to drive engagement for profit. Don’t listen to crap like that. I’m not even saying this to defend this album, because I think it sucks. It’s too poppy to sound punk, and it’s too indie to sound pop. Add some grating vocals to the mix and this was just bad to get through. Outside of a few moments, it’s hard for me to believe that was even popular enough to be considered overrated. It just feels like more British shit for the list. Maybe the BBC can recommend more “overrated” albums better than this. Favorite track: Music When the Lights Go Out Other hits: Campaign of Hate

Didn't really connect with this one. Felt at times like a cross between the worst parts of The Beatles and Arctic Monkeys. Some good moments highlighted by very crisp drumming, but not a lot else going on. Top tracks: What Katie Did, Road to Ruin

Always gonna be slightly biased against this album for childhood reasons. Thought I'd never have to listen to the libertines again. Have to say though, the music wasn't bad at all. Still can't bring myself to give it any more than 2 stars though

I know for a fact there are at least 10 other garage rock revival bands on this list, some with multiple albums. There is no reason for this to be here. Giving this a two only because the first song is good and they’re competent musicians.

Scrappy and lively, but (for me) somewhat forgettable.

# 488 : The Libertines : 26/05/2025 meh! Can listen to it, and it was better than I expected, given the track record of British indie records. But...nothing stood out and it ended up being quite forgettable.

It was alright indie pop, wasn't super memorable for me but some solid tunes in there

Music was ok. Vocals were hard to understand

Oh look, more Britpop and... oh look, it sounds just like the last two dozen examples. 4/10.

I thought I would like it but it just didn't grab me

zero reaction to this at all

Hatte noch nie von der Band gehört. Nicht schlecht aber irgendwie, langweilig?

A real nothing album, forgot almost all of it by the time I hit play on the next album. I wouldn't say it's bad, but in a sea of 2000's indie rock bands it really doesn't stand out. The singing is bland, songwriting is not too memorable and there weren't any songs here I would wanna come back to.

Never really got in to The Libertines, something about it just feels a bit dull. I did enjoy the punkier songs like "Arbeit Macht Frei" but other than that it just felt like a worse version of the Strokes or Arctic Monkeys.

Sound zwenig kohärent, oft lärmig uf e nervigi Art. Bi au ned so Fan vom Gsang. Generell hend d Lieder oft interessanti Idee, aber es chunt ned so zäme.

“What Katie did” is the standout track. Guitar rock with chatty, polite British lads who think they are edgy. Brit pop if it were supermarket Muzak. 2.4 stars rounded down.

boring

what the hell, sure.

I think of the Libertines the way I think of “The Fratellis”. Do I love “Chelsea Dagger”? Yes. Does that make me want to listen to the rest of their back catalogue? No.

Exhibit A in the case against bands whose reputation has been massively over inflated thanks to tabloid tales of drug addiction and interpersonal conflict. If smacked-out Pete Doherty didn't break into his bandmate's flat in the time between The Libertines' first album and this one, this could easily be considered just another album for the indie rock landfill. It's not bad at all, but it is just not as interesting as the stuff in the genre that came before and after. High 2*.

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed Can't Stand Me Now after all this time. That is all. 1.5 Me at HMV: Can I have Supergrass’ I Should Coco? Mom: No. We have I Should Coco at the crack den. I Should Coco at the crack den: 1.5/5

If The Clash were just himbo party bois, you'd get The Libertines. This is far from essential listening.

It’s 2000’s rock revival, it’s fine, I just didn’t really care about it.

Lukewarm on this. Didn't hate it but felt unmemorable

A few songs were almost catchy - but I felt it was pretty meh overall

Sounds a lot like The Fratellis. I mean, The Fratellis sound a lot like The Libertines. But i love The Fratellis and can't dig The Libertines.

If indie sleaze were an annoying white gay at VIA blocking the toilets for a hot 42 minutes and 14 seconds, it would be this album. I can't stand the drunk and hungover vocals. He sounded French a few times lol. I give it a 2.5 for the really good instrumentals on a FEW songs. FAVES The Man Who Would Be King The Ha Ha Wall Campaign of Hate

Not in my edition of the book! 2004. 2 stars. Massively hyped up but average Brit pub rock band with a couple of half decent songs. And Pete Doherty can't sing.

Don't love britpop or the early 2000s indie vibe personally

18/1001 I don't know if anyone else gets this, but here's my take on The Libertines' sound: I always felt like they went into the studio, put down a really tight version of a song - then went back in and added loads of off-the-cuff guitar overdubs, swapped lyric sheets, and then overdubbed each other's vocals - Carl singing Pete, Pete singing Carl - without really knowing the lines that well. THEN, and this is the key part, removed the original backing tracks and supporting structure of the song from the mix and left only the freeform stuff. If this sounds like a bit of a dig, it isn't, because when it works (and I don't know what their actual process was, of course) it sounds like pure genius. However, when it doesn't, the songs just sound unfinished and half-arsed. To be completely fair, I think the music press (in the UK, at least) were desperate to find something to fill the void when the Britpop bubble burst, and it never quite happened, despite NME's efforts to dig up the next big thing. Doherty and Barat were probably as deserving and as gifted as anyone from that period, but it never quite convinced me at the time. Doherty in particular conjures up flashes of Ray Davies brilliance in his melodies and imagery, but was equally prone to slipping into "Knees Up Mother Brown" mode. This album is every bit as urgent and exciting a listen as Up The Bracket, but there is a lot more style over substance at play here. It is an album of moments rather than great songs. Some people may lap up the "shoop shoop, shoop de-lang-a-lang" moments but it all just seems over-contrived. Thrilling in places, but veers towards the unfinished and half-arsed rather than the genius, I'm afraid.

This isn’t a terrible album for what it is. Extremely British pop-rock that is trying a little too hard, but it’s not totally horrible. “The Man Who Would Be King” has kind of a cool swingy Arctic monkeys sound to it. “Narcissist” almost has a sex pistols feeling throughout. The rest of the record is pretty forgettable to me though. Not an album I’ll listen to again. 2*.

From the album cover I was immediately reminded of Charlie's band from Lost, and upon listening I don't think that impression was that far off. This album wasn't quite that bad, but it also wasn't very good. I kinda liked "Music When the Lights Go Out" and "What Katie Did". The rest is largely forgettable.

nice ish

It was an okay listen but nothing really struck me, or stuck out

I recently heard actress Diane Morgan refer to herself as "British Famous." The term certainly applies to many artists on this list, including The Libertines. I recall The Libertines being covered extensively in U.K. music publications like NME and Q, while being virtually ignored here in the U.S.A. Singer Pete Doherty was almost exclusively talked about in the U.S. for his rocky relationships with superskinny supermodel Kate Moss and hard drugs. The music is nothing particularly special. There were plenty of bands in the burgeoning New Garage Rock genre making better and more unique songs. Producer Mick Jones, formerly of The Clash and Big Audio Dynamite, stamped a big ol' Union Jack on The Libertines sound. Maybe the Brits heard something great on this album, but this American didn't.

It’s pretty ragged sounding. Sometimes this can be endearing. This is right on the edge and alternates between “unrefined but energetic” and “these guys are just bad at singing and playing instruments”. The Man Who Would be King is decent. Road to Ruin is ok. I just don’t enjoy any of their musical ideas. This is not for me. 2 ⭐️

Not a fan. The lyrics felt disconnected from the music, like the instrumental was written completely separately from the lyrics and then the singer just tried to make it fit. Just unpleasant to listen to all-around. Favourite Track: What became of the likely lads

Not bad but I just didn't really like it.

I didn't really care for this. It sorta sounds like a mix of Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, which I would like, but I don't like this. There's one punky song near the end and I did like that one, however. Wish they brought more of that and less of the rest. 2/5

This album was not good.

Was expecting to like it but something about it didn't work for me

“what katie did” saved this entire albums review for me. it was still straight ass but not all unlistenable 1.5/5

A bit of a cacophony, didn't like it, even though I like a lot of the elements that went into it (some punk, Indie, rock, but I like the "choo-la-la" less). A bit like a meal made with a random selection of fine ingredients that ends up tasting of nothing.

Well... they're better than Arctic Monkeys. Then again, a 3 a.m. vomit is better than Arctic Monkeys. This went from ok to annoying to unlistenable shit in a short space of time.

edgy, raw, rebellious are a few words I can think of when I listened to this album. It was cool at times and just noise at other times. Considering this came out in 2004, I feel like there were other punk bands that were just better (at least in my opinion) so it's not like they were "ahead of their time" and I can't give them that benefit. I did however, like the vocal exchanges between the two singers. I think they play well off each other. 2/5

Not very interesting. Nothing truly bad, but nothing of note either. 2/5 Won’t listen again

Historically speaking, I've had a lot of time for bands of this ilk, and my allegiances still lean Anglophilic, but this band was never part of my rotation and that fact will not change.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Can't Stand Me Now, Music When The Lights Go Out, The Ha Ha Wall, What Katie Did Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Not the worst but also not surprised this didn't cross the pond. If these guys had come out today the data center usage increase caused by their fans creating AI videos of them making out would've raised the aggregate global temperature by .2 degrees Celsius. 2.5 rounded down.

Moderately unenjoyable background music which surprises me since I like many of their contemporaries

Trotos

Me: <reads notes about this album/band> \"...I'm gonna hate this.\" ... ...and ya know, it wasn't the worst (that bar is extraordinarily low). See? Set expectations at the bottom and you can't go down. Positive: surprisingly better-than-average songwriting. Negative: the band are legitimately awful at their instruments/vocals. Sum: not nearly as bad as the bands they're compared to (Strokes/Vines) but it's still shit because *they can't play* - give these songs to a better band and it might have been something special. 4/10 2 stars.

Did all these British men get together and be like, “We know we can’t sing but if we all do it, maybe no one will notice?” There were some cool parts in this but can’t get past his voice

You know when you can tell what it's going to sound like by the cover? Yeah, this.

Just liked a couple of tracks. Didn't find the whole album better.

Realmente muy poquito. Muy básico y pobre. Es una onda guasones o algo así pero un poco más tranqui capaz y más virtuoso.

A bit boring, isn't it? I couldn't finish this. 2/5

Landfill indie, AKA dad rock for gen x'ers and millenials

Some good guitar parts. Really didn’t like any of the songs

“My favorite genre of music is when it sounds like no one cares about what they’re playing,” said no one, ever.

The Libertines were right - I can’t stand them now and I never really could. That opening track is pretty great, and some of the quieter moments on the record like Music When the Lights Go Out and Tomblands are really nice, but they spend far too much of it posturing as a punk band and incomprehensibly slurring their way through inconsequential songs

Forgettable UK indie sleeze

Didn‘t like it then. Do not like it now. Overrated.

It was OK, nothing special

2 reminds me of early arctic monkeys/fratellis but way worse

Britpop, dertiende in een dozijn.

Sloppy Indie Rock. Sometimes being repetetive.

Indie.exe The bad points are way more than the cool ones

Appealing musically, and anything Mick Jones is associated with can't be all bad. Props to the rhythm section. I'm looking for evidence of the Jam and I'm not really finding it, lads. I'll coin the term "Post-Brit-Pop." Smells like music industry chicanery, what with the pretty boys and all. "What Became of the Likely Lads is aight, innit?

Eugh, boring and sad. I really struggled to get through this. I didn't hate it enough to give it a 1. Genuinely I think if I listened to this again a month from now I wouldn't realise that I'd already heard it before.

Three songs in and I’m not seeing the quality here. This kinda insufferable. Just average, nothing. Okay, five songs and I really don’t like this. Pure wanker trash. There is nothing here. 2/5

Over-hyped UK album from 20 years ago. Nothing wrong with the sound but just generally weak song-writing except for a few songs here and there, and I liked these songs less than in the past. score in 2004: 3 stars (6/10) score in 2024: 2 stars (4/10)

Mostly crap. Sounds like they are still out of it from the night before.

Forgettable

Passable indie fare with a couple of highlights: Can't Stand Me Now (the strongest track on the album by a stretch) and What Katie Did. A lot of forgettable stuff in between though. Definitely not as cool as they thought they were, they sound a lot better when they put together a proper song rather than the slurred ramblings. 2/5.

Feels like the kind of thing I should love, but not really.

Tricky one. Little bits are very very good and lots is not very good at all.

Do you want to hear what two drunken english lads sounds like while palying okay music? Then this is the album for you.

straight in the middle

Don’t be Shy one of the worst things I’ve ever heard

Aika geneeriseksi jäävä indie-rock-levy. Alkoi paremmin mut loppupuolella jo kyllästyttää. 2/5

starts well but gets tiring

Sounds like a bunch of people intentionally decided to make the most average album possible

el tiene esa voz medio arrastrada de depresivo q no mg mucho. Igual banco. para ciertos días. tiene su groove, es bien yanki pero para okasiones va. Muy vaquero igual

Didn’t hate this quite as much as I remembered. And I hated this a lot. Always had a bit respect for Libertines even though I never liked their music. They certainly didn’t just capture a time and movement, but launched it for a good 4 years or so. This sound was the sound of my college years, and everything they influenced after. Which as good as having positive influence is, the absolute garbage that followed after them is a stain (imo!). Anyway, this record itself does still have that annoying sound for me that really grates me. I cant put my finger on it, but 80% of it comes from the vocals. Hate his voice. Irritating. That said, when he aint singing, I quite liked Last Post on the Bugle, and Campaign of Hate. Although short, Arbeit Macht Frei is probably the best song on this, despite the name. Can hear little hints of Strokes throughout, as well as seeing where Alex Turner got a lot of earlier ideas from. Definitely not for me, but can totally understand why people love this. It’s iconic to say the least.

Never been really into the libertines, I think theyve got a few decent songs here and there but by and large their whole schtick gets on my nerves. I like up the bracket/don't look back into the sun, but these are both on previous albums, the singles on this one are alright but a step down. Almost admire libertines' commitment to in no way changing their sound, either between albums or even songs really. They were definitely influential on a whole host of far worse crap indie bands but I'm not sure that's a positive. This album is fine but wouldn't listen again.

Nog zo'n zeroes album Werd wel iets beter halverwege maar vond t over algemeen niet echt nice

Yet another album that is fine while it's on, but get nothing lasting out of the experience and would be fine never listening to it again. A bland light punk record you've heard a billion other times on this list

Feels like yet another indie album from the 2000s

Nowhere near as good as I remembered it to be.

Instantly forgettable.

Favorite track: The man who would be king other picks: Can't stand me now, music when the light comes on

The record that spawned a hundred indie landfill imitations. This band is pretty iconic if you’re a British millennial, though more for legal misadventures and tabloid fodder than quality music. The US had the effortless cool of The Strokes, and we were lumbered with The Liabilities, sorry, Libertines. Still, they were marginally better than the deluge of dross that followed.

What the artic monkeys would sound like if they sucked

It’s well produced and better than what I expected from something described as indie/garage. There are some nice musical turns and poppy melodies, but the vocals sound like shit – karaoke night at the pub after last call. Sounds like the acclaim isn't universal and I'm inclined to think it sucks. Has a lot of potential though. 2.9

Can barely even remember anything about this, just a few hours later. Decent instrumentals I guess but weak vocals and empty lyrics* and an overall sound that resembles that of teenage rock aspirations (I guess you have to pad this 1001 albums list with some of these, every now and again, though surely not if you expanded beyond a very basic UK-US and Rock demographics). *What I assumed to be an exception: the phrase "A Web of Sound", only to discover that it is the name of a 60s Psychedelic Rock album by the Seeds. So much for good writing!

Boringggg

I'm writing this while about half way through as I'm afraid I'll forget about this as soon as it's done. It's okay. But really super extra forgettable.

If you want to embrace the sloppiness this is for you. The songs are likely there, but the execution, not so much.

Don’t like this anymore. Don’t like the thin repetitive little guitar lines tinkling in the right channel.

I didn’t expect this would be much good and I didn’t listen to the whole album, however it was listenable, a bit childish in parts, overall 2*

Deliberately sloppy and loose which makes it somewhat more interesting, but ultimately just another tedious visit to Indie/Alt Rock land with ‘Don’t Be Shy’ and ‘Tomblands’ the only saving graces here.

Love this era of British alternative, but The Libertines do nothing for me. 2/5

Interesting post British punk rock. Good but as someone else wrote, forgettable xxx

Can't stand indie, but this wasn't absolutely terrible. Just mostly terrible. Opening track the only one I recognised, wasn't as bad as I remember. Most of the rest was tosh. Man who would be king was alright tbf. But my god what a bland souless genre of music.

In spite of my much professed love of aughts indie rock, somehow The Libertines never did much for me. They just feel like a lesser imitation of bands like The White Stripes and Arctic Monkeys. This album isn't bad by any stretch but I would rather listen to others most of the time.

I don’t like British indie rock. I just can’t find my way with it. 2

Tää tais olla ihan jees. Reilut kaksi tähteä vaan kuitenkin, ku ei erityisesti jääny mieleen

Langweilig

3/20/24. Eh, sounded pretty generic garage rock from the 2000s, didn't move the needle for me.

Ну не, меня бесит этот грязный звук. Хотя есть приятные мотивы, все равно альбом -- гадость. Даже лучшие треки. Ну, кроме What Katie Did

Redundant. Sounds like a hundred albums that came before.

Huh? This one, not Up the Bracket?? Look I like the Libertines, at one point I liked them a LOT. But there is just no justification for including this mainly lacklustre and patchy, disappointing follow up to an excellent debut in this list. Things were already going very wrong for the band and on the verge of splitting up by this point and a couple of the songs are interesting for exploring the dynamic between Carl and Pete, but besides that, pass. Basically, 1st track, last track both excellent. Filler almost consistently average in between. Music When the Lights Go Out the notable exception. So much B-side quality shoved on the record. Particularly b-side vibes: tracks 2-4, 7, 9, 11-13. So that's 8 out of 14 tracks. Re listening to this today was reliving my huge disappointment with it on release. I kept listening then, but it didn't get better. I see there's a brand new record out next month, which I will probably listen to and the new songs sound ok, but I'm not that excited about it, sadly. Anyone who remotely enjoyed this and didn't know the band, MUST listen to the debut, and non-album singles Don't Look Back Into the Sun and What a Waster. Far more representative of their talents.

I'm not familiar with this band or this album, and the review for this album seem to be a pretty mixed bag, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Things started off on the right foot; I really loved the guitar playing on "Can't Stand Me Now. But from there, the album didn't really go anywhere interesting, and all of the songs were pretty bland. I really don't see the appeal of this album at all. At a time when bands like Interpol, The Strokes, and Arctic Monkeys were putting out some great work, why would anyone opt for this album?

Passive music that doesn't excel... I have spent a lot of time in Excel today. Favourite track: The Man Who Would Be King

If the Clash a dog a ran into a wall that was The Arctic Monkeys you’d have this pug-like abomination that really wouldn’t really survive on its own.

Its fine. Definitely not a 1001 album I need to hear before I die 2

so not for me. I'm glad someone likes it.

Sloppy and not very interesting.

kind of meh

I appreciated the attempt and what it was in-tribute to, just isn’t my style

No doubt they rock out, but not really my jam. I imagine they tear up some garages

It's ok. I don't see what's so innovative about thos

I've never been too hot on The Libertines. I think there's a lot of very reductive things you could say about the band (most of which I find generally true anyway), but like, the amount of critical hype they received in the early 2000s just never really lined up with their legacy or uh the quality of their music. It's The Strokes but drunker and more British. Doesn't suck entirely though. 5/10

Britpunk. OK, but not sure why this is here over something by The Clash or Sex Pistols. Bristled at the title \"Arbeit Macht Frei\" & had to look up the lyrics as they were completely unintelligible -- at least it wasn't a pro-N@zi song.

Incredible this made it through the front door of a label. Non-descript “music”, bubble-gum lyrics, and, well, the vocal is truly forgettable; it brings to mind a trained dingo I saw performing in Australia. Listen to “Don’t Be Shy” and imagine having that as your only music on a deserted island. Truly frightening.

Jangley naughties indie. They weren’t my favourite at the time and now I remember why. Messy and a bit lacking.

Meh, didn't hate this album but no tracks stood out to me. Got through it without getting too bored.. probably wouldn't listen again. 3/10

Poseurs, and not really competent. I know what they are going for, but it doesn't come across as genuine to me.

Kind of liked it but wasn't blown away!

Not my favorite.

insuportavelmente chato

Because British punk is the greatest genre of all, right? This list thinks so.

Osaavat muodostaa yhden kielen kitarakuvioita, eivät melodioita. Osaavat rämistä, eivät rokata.

low 2, bordering a 1 because i listened to this whilst angry and I already hate music like this

Point off for being British

Big hit or miss energy on this one. One song I’d be really uninterested and the next I would be thinking “oh now this one is potentially good.” What’s truly interesting is that for such a wishy-washy album, somehow all the tracks still managed to sound the same - honestly it’s impressive 🤔

Songs are either mediocre or aweful.

This is ok. Shades of early aughts music. Just ok, 2*, don't hate it. Can't tell why this is on this list. Some reviewer compared them to Arctic Monkeys, which is what this reminded me of.

Pretty decent advert for not being a junkie dickhead. Mumble indie.

There's certainly a lot of drama behind this album. But unlike some other bands who can turn drama and internal tension into great music, this is just ok. I can see how they might have seemed exciting at the time though, touring with legendary acts and also performing underground gigs in their flats. The excitement doesn't really hold up unfortunately and it mostly sounds like just another punk band.

Typical English indie whatever.

This was not really that good.

Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex It's great until it's not... sadly relegated to the "landfill indie" wasteland. 2.5

I’m still a bit stunned this was made 20 years ago and not 40 years. The Britishness definitely shines through. Not a good thing though. The vocals on Don’t Be Shy are beyond awful. Shy-y-y. Please. I’m with the BBC poll-ees ranking this as the third most overrated album of all time. Cheers. What Katie Did is actually a decent song. Refreshing, but not enough.

soso 2.5

Pretty average radio rock

2.5 meh

the album cover was misleading - this is not against the grain whatsoever

A few of the songs on here really bring it down. The band has some pretty decent songs bit some of these were straight trash.

Meh. sounds like all the rest

Something about the sleazyness of it all annoys me to hell.

Nope. nothing interesting.

Think this might have been a little overrated at the time.

Can’t stand them now

Started so strong! Can’t stand me now - classic. Really good example of a polished indie rock band from the early 00’s. Album became a bit repetitive. Downhill after song 1

Suspect that this would come across well live as their concerts tend to be fairly chaotic; but on album it just sounds amateurish, Sub par indie landfill

I’m not a huge fan of indie music and this just falls into that category. I didn’t enjoy this one all that much. Not my thing

Bit of a mish-mash

Listened Before? N Ummmmm.... I think I'm not British enough for this album? Critical acclaim? hm. I'm kinda speechless. I didn't HATE it, but I can't say I liked it much either. I think I'll just try to forget this frenetic mess. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: What Katie Did

I remember going to one of the last Libertines gig in Camden in 2004. It was in a tent out the back of an art gallery. They were jeered by some of the crowd as they shambled through their set. "Once a Libertine, always a Libertine!" shouted one of their hangers-on. The band split up about a week later. As I walked home in the rain there was a junkie screaming for his mother in a phone box outside the tube station. The Libertines is like skipping the all-night bender and just going straight to waking up in a puddle of your own vomit.

Absolutely baffling the this one is on the list and the debut isn’t. This is just tabloid fodder for the 2000s. I love the Libertines, their debut is actually timeless. This hasn’t held up

This is so drab Hard to see why there was so much press surrounding them when they were popular The lead “singer” sounds like he’s having a drunken ramble over some basic run-of-the-mill indie rock instrumentals Luckily, bands like Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand would come along and make garage rock more interesting and FUN Favourite tracks: Can’t Stand Me Now, Don’t Be Shy, What Became of the Likely Lads

Not really for me

Not sure why this is on this list. It's fine, but it's just generic rock.

I don't really remember much about it? There must be better indie/garage rock albums out there to pick from

Can't stand you now? Couldn't stand them then, either. Post-Britpop bilge that's almost indistinguishable from Arcade Fire, Razorlight et al. There is nothing outstanding to redeem this that wasn't available in spades at the time, with Pete Doherty taking the "bad boy britpop wanker" thing into overdrive. Less enfant terrible, more outstanding fuckup.

*Shrug* 2.5 stars.

Why do I not like these guys? This cover puts me on the defensive from the get go. And nothing on here proved me wrong. It's all fine playing and everything. I like me some jangly guitars. But none of these tunes were worth the listen. I don't need any of this.

A part of me understands this album's ramshackle, shambolic charm - and every now and again it threatens to work its magic on me - but far too much of the material sounds underpowered and under-baked. On purpose? It has all the punch of a demo recorded through a mobile phone. Still, some of these lads are QPR fans, so I can't be too harsh. They've suffered enough already. Believe me, I know!

I may be behind you guys, but I'm with you. Nothing here moved me.

Interesting sound. But, couldn't find enough snap.

Not my thing

The Libertines were one of the perpetrators of the garage rock revival, though from the UK side. The energetic indie rock is dragged down by Peter Doherty's unfortunate voice. Many of the songs meander and feel like a waste of space. It is the opposite of purposeful songwriting. It's trashy, boring, safe music that probably seemed cool at the time but has aged terribly. The legacy of the Libertines is weak and their influence is nil. Better rock music has been made by better bands that same year. Go listen to Modest Mouse or Interpol instead.

This sounds very run-of-the-mill to me. "The Libertines was voted the third-most overrated album ever made in a 2005 BBC public poll." Seems about right.

I'll guarantee this is UK indie rock. That cover speaks for itself. The one on the right looks like classic chav bullshit. Bet this sucks. Yeah, standard issue UK indie rock. Just like the thousand other tiny variations on it I've already heard here. Surely they know this shit is only ever very mildly popular outside the UK? 2/5.

Robert continue de mettre le doigt là où se situe précisément notre désintérêt.

Pretty blah. Didn't like the vocals. Nothing really did it for me.

Yeah I don't really know what to think about this. There is a certainly a rawness and a feeling of punk abandon here--I don't know for sure, but I would not be surprised if they came about as being popular after the success of The Strokes. Some of these songs are chaotic enough and fun enough to work, but I'm just not really feeling it. Kind of surprised this is on this list.

punk rock but none of the songs interested me 2.5

Meh. Its like Lacroix punk, there's just a smidgen of it there and it doesn't really satisfy. It's not even diet Coke level punk which would suffice.

Hard-pressed to see how this record is significant in any way at all. Like why before I die do I need to hear this? The answer is unclear. It's not weird enough. It's not good enough. It's not exciting enough. Heck, it's not even boring enough or terrible enough. It's middling indie rock with a slightly punky vibe. Okay. But why?

Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. Probably will not listen again.

big ole meh for me. sounded like the mid 2000s but not in any way that interests me

I can appreciate what they're going for here, but it just didn't do it for me. The vocals in particular I found to be quite abrasive.

You can take me anywhere!

Unfortunately, this album goes on the pile of "What am I doing on this list" records. I was struggling to find anything original or honest about this position. But here I am, with empty hands, after listening to this two times in a row, because maybe I missed something important? Maybe there was a moment, on one of the tracks, that would unlock the whole experience for me? Or maybe a thorough background check of the band and the album will make it clearer? Nope, nothing works. It's just another indie rock band with indie rock album and indie rock tracks, just with a small twist - it's not good.

Some decent instrumentals ruined by Wish.com Morrissey vocals. Some truly awful musical choices by the frontman on delivery, timing, and overall musicianship, so I hope the band found someone better to lead their relatively catchy early-aughts indie pop down the road.

The NME rates this bog standard indie rock album as the 99th greatest album of all time. No wonder the weekly music press died out. There is little here to distinguish this from any local band you'd see down the Dog & Partridge on a Wednesday night. Also, the vocals are bad and annoying. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Can't Stand Me Now Date listened: 30/03/23

A few folks have mentioned that the first few songs are ok, but then it gets a bit samey. I concur.

Edge :^)

It’s ok. Remember liking it a lot more at the time. Some decent tunes, but overall it’s fairly forgettable

Reminds me of those bands in early 00s teen drama films. it’s ok, might not listen to it again. For folks that looooove indie rock, you will most likely enjoy this album.

2/5 surprisingly boring. probably enjoyable as a live bar band with a few beers in me. what became… is a good closer but not enough.

Well, this is a blast from the past. What ever did become of the likely lads?

Life is too short

Track 1 started things off with promise, and track 2 wasn't bad. But then ... oh, my. Did I listen to the non-engineered version? Was there a producer? Aside from amateurish songs, the recording was, well, not great at all. This absolutely does not deserve to be on this list. Pass.

Just feels like a paint-by-numbers version of bands before them. I don't hear anything here that's really original, just echoes of past bands mixed together.

Ho hum. Another album I can live without. 1 star.

111. The Libertines - The Libertines (2004) 6.13.26 Variety: 1 Adequacy: 1 Listenability: 1 Uniqueness: 1 Emotionality: 1 = 1.0 "Shoop shoop, shoop de-lang-a-lang/ Shoop shoop, shoop de-lang-a-lang" All I know about this band is that I've actively managed to avoid it for 20 or so years. I got real tired real fast of reading about Doherty's shenanigans and so quickly wrote them off. Sure, plenty of great music has been created by degenerate weirdos, but those stories almost always come after the music. Wow I like such and such an album, let's read up about - - - oh. Oh no. Stories of recklessness and scumbaggery do not endear me to anyone, especially if that's the first thing I know about them. I've known plenty of people who struggle with addiction issues, and the vast lot of them still have regard for their fellow human beings and don't become living, breathing collateral damage. There are plenty of musicians with boring lives that still make good music. So, with that said maybe the other band members at least deserve the benefit of the doubt. And maybe Doherty will prove to be some once in a generation voice sent down from the rock gods, whose very public self destruction will prove entirely worth it, and I'll have egg all over my face. THE TRACKS "Can't Stand Me Now" - Pretty on the nose title here. Sounds like the guys are sharing vocal duties here, and also sounds like neither can be bothered to commit to actually singing. Unless the stumbly, whiny phrasing is a put on. In which it becomes doubly annoying. What's even more frustrating is there are the bones of a possibly interesting kind of throwback 60s pop thing, but no one cared to put any effort into making it sound in any way good. This is a mush of an effort, and the very poor harmonica playing is the icing on the cake. Not off to a great start. "Last Post on the Bugle" - This sounded like your drunk friend doing karaoke to some obscure song from the That Thing You Do soundtrack that didn't make it into the movie. This was garbage. This is going to be a chore, I can tell. "Don't Be Shy" - Several cats were strangled to produce the vocals for this track. True story. Then an engineer got distracted during the mix and didn't notice they were mistimed over top of the drum track. You can skip the last full minute of this one. I did the hard work for you. You're welcome. R.I.P. cats. "The Man Who Would Be King" - This one starts off with a bit of energy and then very rapidly descends into a week two beginner's guitar tuning session. Dear lord. This feels like trolling. That was a thing 22 years ago, right? 3:59 never felt so long. "Music When the Lights Go Out" - Ok. Something different. This sounds like an actual song. There is a bit of effort being made in both the vocals and instrumentation. Then at 1:26 it gets sloppy for a bit, and then returns to the kind of shambolic not terrible little ditty. I begrudgingly admit this is not half bad. Can we het more effort like this? "Narcissist" - A fun bit of cowpunk is marred by some underwhelming vocals and a lack of commitment to the ideal. Still, a swing in the right direction. "The Ha Ha Wall" - The tuning up opening does not inspire confidence, but we again have the outline of a real song here. Just the fenty nod energy level of the vocals don't do anything to help. And the atonal detuned guitar parts are far less charming than when a band like Pavement does, it because Pavement knows how to craft a melody around that stuff. Formless nonsense with a rudimentary backbeat does not a good song make. "Arbeit Macht Frei" - I think this is meant to be a bit of social commentary about racist hypocrites, and is using the form of an old school punk song so do so? "California Über Alles" could have been a template, but it's over before it even begins and you're left with the feeling that these guys maybe didn't want to step in anything, so they just might stop for a small bit of lip service instead. "Campaign of Hate" - Oof. This one is somewhat interesting and then goes off the rails and becomes boring and repetitious very quickly. "What Katie Did" - Finally a catchy guitar line! And only 10 songs in! Frankly I would like to have a whole album of this kind of 60s pop shuffle. It's actually a bit hummable, and I think they can pull this off. Guys I think they might do it! They just have to not fall apart 3/4 of the way through and... Well they gave it a good try I guess. Still points for effort. Turn this off at the 2:21 mark and we could have gotten these guys into the highlights finally. You know what, I'm feeling charitable. "Tomblands" - This was just sloppy and felt like a practice session where the band was actively just trying out ideas. "The Saga" - While not my cup of tea, this at least had some good playing on in. In between the parts where it felt like the singer lost his lyric sheet and the band had to vamp for good long portions. I liked the little bits of surf guitar. "Road to Ruin" - This intermittently had some nice 60s inspired guitar on it, and can imagine an underserved band like Johnny Kidd and the Pirates being an inspiration, but its reach is well beyond its grasp, and ultimately feels overstuffed with half developed ideas. "What Became of the Likely Lads" - The sloppy out of time vocals in the verse destroy any goodwill the energetic playing has earned on this one. Imagine this song with professional, tight harmonies. So much of this albums could have been an ok sort of throwback record in more capable hands. "France" - This hidden track scotch taped onto the end of the previous one was rescued form the bin why? Is the also terrible acoustic noodling supposed to show us some hidden sensitive depths? If so, mission unaccomplished. Highlights - MIDLIGHTS - "Music When the Lights Go Out" - "Narcissist" - "What Katie Did" - "The Saga" LOWLIGHTS - "Can't Stand Me Now" - "Last Post on the Bugle" - "Don't Be Shy" - "The Man Who Would Be King" - "The Ha Ha Wall" - "Arbeit Macht Frei" - "Campaign of Hate" - "Tomblands" - "Road to Ruin" FINAL THOUGHTS Early 2000s garage revival felt fresh at the time, but VERY quickly lost its luster. Even the Strokes, whose first album I liked plenty I could not be bothered with after that. It's a very limited palette to begin with and all the best to do it were very melody forward underneath all that fuzz, and usually quickly evolved or became relics. Nuggets of a bygone era if you will. These guys are most definitely bringing up the very rear of that revival. The White Stripes, and the Hives were the best of that wave in my opinion, and both started strong and evolved ( The Hives less so). I don't care much for the Black Keys either, but at least those guys sounded like ace performers. I can't stress enough how unimpressed I was with the playing, the vocals, the songwriting on this. The only highlight for me overall was the production, which flattered these doofuses as much as was possible with a decent live-ish sound. Glad I was able to finally confirm my suspicions though. Go listen to any of the below recommendations before you throw another one any of these guys. Especially Guitar Romantic by the Exploding Hearts. Those guys dropped one excellent album and had their career cut short due to tragedy, but were light years ahead of anything I heard on this. That the Libertines album was so chock-full of wasted potential, makes the Exploding Hearts obscurity all the more infuriating. While there were glimmers of hope throughout ( brief as the were) they almost all turned out to be fool's gold, and I was glad when I was able to thrown down my pan and abandon this shitty bust of a claim. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Not sure I'll ever re-listen to this FURTHER LISTENING - Guitar Romantic by the Exploding Hearts - Is This It by the Strokes - White Blood Cells by the White Stripes - Veni Vidi Vicious by the Hives

Thin, ratty guitar rock with painfully dry production. Songwise, this record owes a massive debt to The Kinks though it can't match Ray Davies' melodic sense. Singer Carl Barât also borrows some of Davies' vocal mannerisms but without doing anything revolutionary or transformative.

I have never understood the appeal, and definitely not the success, of the Libertines. Sound shit.

Ive never heard of this band. But I understand why. The style isnt really appealing to me. Similar to what I said yesterday about The Stones this sound is a little too chaotic for my enjoyment. It felt a bit overwhelming for me. My favorite song was Music When The Lights Go Out

Couldn't stand the vocals. 0/5

What is this doing on a list of just 1001 albums, utter tripe, plus we need the facility to give zero or minus stars as a rating in case an unsuspecting listener might think with 1 star it might be worth checking out

In the US this album wasn't on anyone's radar, so it couldn't possibly be overrated. But if I ever met someone who said they liked it, i'm sure I'd think differently of them now. I've heard of Pete Doherty but never knew why he had any notoriety (aside from his Aimee Winehouse connection). Of all the many, many bands from around the turn of the Century with the word "The" and then a single plural noun for a name, this is the worst I've one heard.

Whoever called this "landfill indie" was right. Produced with an apparent intention to be sloppy but actually just sloppy. Fuck it, it irritates me.

Generic Garage. Unsure why its here.

When they set out to make this album, did they have any idea how it was gonna sound? I hear Rockabilly in this on Narcissist, like this track feels less like a punk revival and more of a Kinks tribute. I hear so many disparate influences, and it feels like none of them have had any time to settle in, like a Meat Sauce that needs another 2 hours to simmer. First track has some genuinely pretty guitar work but the lyrics are not sticky enough for it to work, and why the fuck is there a harmonica solo??? You don’t fucking need it!!! The Ha Ha Wall has some genuinely good ideas that could’ve worked better if given the option to explore them more. I think they could’ve made a lot of these songs cooler if they weren’t comitted to this album being so explicitly commercial. As for a lot of the rest of the album, these guys don’t know when a phrase is good enough to be "the only phrase." Last Phrase on the Bungle riff is genuinely annoying. So is the acoustic fake out at the very end of the album. I was so ready for it to be over and then it’s so whatever acoustic jam. The vocalist is also just ripping off much better ones from this period, specifically Hamilton Liethauset of the Walkmen and Alex Turner (i suppose The Libertines predate Arctic Monkeys, but still AM improves on this p much every way) Also,,, MORRISSEY????? LIKE VERY OBVIOUSLY!! All of these English vocalists he’s taking heavy inspiration for, and it sounds so flat. And these girl group shoop shoop da da da’s, sang with such little affect, maybe the most egregious motifs on this album. The lyrics, too. God, so Nothing. Arbeit Macht Frei, how terrible. It’s not even saying anything interesting to say about it. This horrific concentration camp solo in a ooh rah singy song. Maybe they were going for a Victoria by the Kinks say, but it doesn’t work. It doesn’t work at all. I will say, the drummer has chops, I think, but if I could summate this album in one word, it would be "undistilled"

Ah yes, the poster boys for indie sleaze. This is more the pop version of garage rock revival. It has good riffs but it’s missing charisma. Hand claps? Subtle cowbell? Why? Listen to true purveyors of 2000’s garage rock revival on the list: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys. Maybe The Black Keys, Interpol and Bloc Party for cross reference. Never J**. We don’t talk about ***. Overall: 2/10

On the scale of bands being massively hyped in tabloids and music rags vs actual being good, The Libertines have to be on the podium. One or two songs are ok enough, but some are absolutely shockingly shite. So much of it is painfully annoying and at times just delivered completely half arsed. Probably the drugs but still. Having listened again 20 years older and wiser, I still cannot understand why this band were liked or got to anywhere near the heights they briefly ascended to.

As unoriginal and forgettable as it gets. There is no reason to listen to this over any Strokes, Arctic Monkeys or Franz Ferdinand record of the time, and I frankly wish I never bothered to put it on. The things I subject myself to for this generator…

Vocals are absolutely atrocious while the melodies are fairly basic. Needs a negative rating.

This the indiest od indie records and that's great for people who like Indie but not so great for me.

Not Good.

não gostei não. não faz meu estilo.

Boring brit pop/indie

God awful whiny ass voices

Made it through "Don't Be Shy" and had to tap out

Hints of punk but mostly pop-ish. Softie rock. Difficult to picture what their concert would even be like. Candles being passed around? What do these musicians actually have to say? This is as close to the definition of poser as you can get.

Musical genius or complete shite? I’m firmly in the latter camp. Nothing original going on. Sounds more like a demo than a finished album - and I get that’s probably the idea, but that only makes sense if the ‘live’ recording is capturing something spontaneously amazing in some way that can’t be captured in the studio. This is just rough and ready to the point of being a mess. And it’s considered their finest work! 1

Did not like at all

Watch "Pete Doherty, Who Killed My Son?" R.I.P. Mark Blanco ❤️

I was on the fence with a 2. Stuck to my gut

Soft pop punky. 1/5

People are calling this punk? Are they listening to a different album to me? This is jangly indie pop shite, at best. I try to find something good in most albums, but I can't be bothered to try with this. This is terrible, and Doherty is an odious little smackhead whose vocal stylings are fucking insufferable. Not only should this not be on the list, its mere existence should be a criminal act. Awful people, awful band, awful album.

Aivan törkeen teennäistä paskaa. 0,75/5.

One of the most overblown, overhyped bands of the last 30 odd years. Remembered more for being drug buddies to the likes of Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse than any of their bland, posh boy slumming it less than average indie pap. Not one single redeeming feature. Would give 0 stars if I could.

This feels very uninteresting to me. Sort of completely blends in with literally everything else. Super simple, super homogenous, super British. Thought there would be something special here due to their troubled relationship. Nope. It's completely vanilla. Jesus. Fave tracks: - Don't Be Shy - The Man Who Would Be King - Narcissist - The Saga - What Became of the Likely Lads Edit: Dropping to one, fuck it. The songwriting is just so unmemorable and the vocals are actually bad.

Страшная вода. Лучшая песня - Don't Be Shy.

Hard to believe these guys were ever it.

First song and i already want to turn it off. I hate the British dirtbag vibe. Remindes me of Lovejoy, just less missable

Same old same old. Same guitar tones and riffs. Same lyrics. This list could be broken down to about 20 albums. Also the pathetic attempt at heroin chic on the cover. I wish I could give less than one. Pfui.

Pedestrian Lad Rock dressed up as poetic rebellion. Narcissists indeed. One star for the sentiment of 'Arbeit...'.

If you enjoy the british Post-Punk sound this album might be something to check out but I am not really a fan of the genre so I cant say much

Another generic indie album from the early 2000's. Another one that doesn't deserve the hype around it

Off-brand early AM. Worst Song: The Ha Ha Wall Best Song: Road to Ruin Added to Liked Songs: Road to Ruin

This is awful. Half of the songs do have good melodies but half of them are all over the place and they're all mostly ruined by the vocalist. Awful. Can't stand me now is the stand out song

Jeg har sikkert likt dette en gang, og det skremmer meg. :( Musikken er tålelig til tider, men fy faen for en vokal!

I still don't understand how this band ever became successful - the vocals are truly awful at times. I didn't like The Libertines back then, and I still don't like them.

Don't quite like it, for me personally is kinda mediocre 1/5

The hype surrounding the drug-infused band "The Libertines" never interested me. I've also never consciously listened to any of their songs. As it turns out, that was a good thing. I find the album "The Libertines" awful. The band takes the liberty of singing terribly, and their guitars sound just as shitty. It's all really borderline. For me, the album, and probably the band, belong in the category of "The most successful shitty albums/bands."

Horribly mid brit pop.

Geez! What's with all the British Indie lately!? One star for the douchey album cover alone. Upon listening, though? Yeah. This is trash.

There is nothing special about this music that makes it deserving to be on this list. And if I can clearly detect a strong accent of the singer, is it really singing? Don’t get me wrong, the music isn’t horrible, it’s jut forgettable.

Sorry but “Heroin: The Album” is so shambolic and useless to be even briefly entertaining. These guys definitely think they’re rock stars, but they’re mostly just shit.

Bland, boring and forgettable! The last couple of songs were kind of alright though! Album rating: ⭐ 1/2

Hateful. Some of the most unbearable music of all time. Would give a 0 if I could.

This is a good example of where sometimes I judge the lifestyle of a musician over the actual music they make. I realise of course that in all its history, music has hundreds of examples where drugs have played a significant part in how the music was produced either good or bad and that in a lot of cases some of the masterpieces we now enjoy would not have come about if not for the part drugs played in the creation of the music. I also accept that drug addiction can be construed as an illness. But in the case of this album I was aware of the exploits of Pete Doherty before I’d heard even a note of his music. In fact his lifestyle put me off this album despite the musical press praising it. Pete Doherty is no role model and I cannot condone his behaviour and certainly not buy or listen to his music. 1/5 21/3/25

phoney

The kind of scruffy, clownish, pork-pie-hat-wearing shambolic music that's exceptionally cringeworthy and dated, and ultimately led to the nauseous, insincere folk-indie so horrifically embodied by Mumford and Sons. At least their Britpop predecessors knew how to rock, how to add a good riff, no matter how shit their songs were, but this is so excessively in love with its own chintzy decadence that it instantly becomes a self-destructive parody without merit or value.

Wow, this sucks.

Imo nie na darmo ten album trafił na trzecie miejsce najbardziej overrated albumów w historii (z drugiej strony trafili tam też Beatlesi - Sgt. Peppers - i The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead, a to już jest kryminał).

The more I think about it the more angry I get. It is disgrace to British Rock Music and first album that made me think I wasted my time.
