The Libertines

Some decent instrumentals ruined by Wish.com Morrissey vocals. Some truly awful musical choices by the frontman on delivery, timing, and overall musicianship, so I hope the band found someone better to lead their relatively catchy early-aughts indie pop down the road.

The NME rates this bog standard indie rock album as the 99th greatest album of all time. No wonder the weekly music press died out. There is little here to distinguish this from any local band you'd see down the Dog & Partridge on a Wednesday night. Also, the vocals are bad and annoying. #451 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ Shitty brit rock with a lazy pop edge, like second rate Suede. It feels like UK poops out one of these every year and for some explicable reason they end up at the top of the charts. I'm utterly fed up with these kinds of bands, whether they come from UK of US. I tried looking for something redeeming positives, but I find this record revolting in every sense. Even the fucking production values give me the creeps. Because of the shitty fucking falsetto I heard just before stopping 0.5/5

This is a boring and overrated album for me. While listening I mostly felt underwhelmed and a bit restless. It has that messy, chaotic indie rock energy the band is known for, but after a while it just becomes tiring and samey. Mick Jones’ production is actually really good. It captures that raw, live, slightly dirty sound very well. And “Can’t Stand Me Now” is a decent song that stands out from the rest. But overall, the album doesn’t have enough strong moments to justify the hype it gets. It’s fine if you already love the band, but for me it didn’t leave much of an impression. One of those records that people call a classic but I just can’t get into.

Hells bells, there truly is no end to the mediocre britpop, is there? God-awful. It's equal parts poser-punk, indie rock, and off-key glam. Maybe what strikes me most is the perceived volume of the bed tracks makes the singer sound flaccid. Like, really. He's singing far too softly to ever make this sound like an integrated experience. Complete and utter mess, this one. Tally another delusion for Dimery and his glue-sniffing peers.

Life is too short

Track 1 started things off with promise, and track 2 wasn't bad. But then ... oh, my. Did I listen to the non-engineered version? Was there a producer? Aside from amateurish songs, the recording was, well, not great at all. This absolutely does not deserve to be on this list. Pass.

Just feels like a paint-by-numbers version of bands before them. I don't hear anything here that's really original, just echoes of past bands mixed together.

Ho hum. Another album I can live without. 1 star.

The Libertines - The Libertines (2004) 6.13.26 Variety: 1 Adequacy: 1 Listenability: 1 Uniqueness: 1 Emotionality: 1 = 1.0 "Shoop shoop, shoop de-lang-a-lang/ Shoop shoop, shoop de-lang-a-lang" All I know about this band is that I've actively managed to avoid it for 20 or so years. I got real tired real fast of reading about Doherty's shenanigans and so quickly wrote them off. Sure, plenty of great music has been created by degenerate weirdos, but those stories almost always come after the music. Wow I like such and such an album, let's read up about - - - oh. Oh no. Stories of recklessness and scumbaggery do not endear me to anyone, especially if that's the first thing I know about them. I've known plenty of people who struggle with addiction issues, and the vast lot of them still have regard for their fellow human beings and don't become living, breathing collateral damage. There are plenty of musicians with boring lives that still make good music. So, with that said maybe the other band members at least deserve the benefit of the doubt. And maybe Doherty will prove to be some once in a generation voice sent down from the rock gods, whose very public self destruction will prove entirely worth it, and I'll have egg all over my face. THE TRACKS "Can't Stand Me Now" - Pretty on the nose title here. Sounds like the guys are sharing vocal duties here, and also sounds like neither can be bothered to commit to actually singing. Unless the stumbly, whiny phrasing is a put on. In which it becomes doubly annoying. What's even more frustrating is there are the bones of a possibly interesting kind of throwback 60s pop thing, but no one cared to put any effort into making it sound in any way good. This is a mush of an effort, and the very poor harmonica playing is the icing on the cake. Not off to a great start. "Last Post on the Bugle" - This sounded like your drunk friend doing karaoke to some obscure song from the That Thing You Do soundtrack that didn't make it into the movie. This was garbage. This is going to be a chore, I can tell. "Don't Be Shy" - Several cats were strangled to produce the vocals for this track. True story. Then an engineer got distracted during the mix and didn't notice they were mistimed over top of the drum track. You can skip the last full minute of this one. I did the hard work for you. You're welcome. R.I.P. cats. "The Man Who Would Be King" - This one starts off with a bit of energy and then very rapidly descends into a week two beginner's guitar tuning session. Dear lord. This feels like trolling. That was a thing 22 years ago, right? 3:59 never felt so long. "Music When the Lights Go Out" - Ok. Something different. This sounds like an actual song. There is a bit of effort being made in both the vocals and instrumentation. Then at 1:26 it gets sloppy for a bit, and then returns to the kind of shambolic not terrible little ditty. I begrudgingly admit this is not half bad. Can we het more effort like this? "Narcissist" - A fun bit of cowpunk is marred by some underwhelming vocals and a lack of commitment to the ideal. Still, a swing in the right direction. "The Ha Ha Wall" - The tuning up opening does not inspire confidence, but we again have the outline of a real song here. Just the fenty nod energy level of the vocals don't do anything to help. And the atonal detuned guitar parts are far less charming than when a band like Pavement does, it because Pavement knows how to craft a melody around that stuff. Formless nonsense with a rudimentary backbeat does not a good song make. "Arbeit Macht Frei" - I think this is meant to be a bit of social commentary about racist hypocrites, and is using the form of an old school punk song so do so? "California Über Alles" could have been a template, but it's over before it even begins and you're left with the feeling that these guys maybe didn't want to step in anything, so they just might stop for a small bit of lip service instead. "Campaign of Hate" - Oof. This one is somewhat interesting and then goes off the rails and becomes boring and repetitious very quickly. "What Katie Did" - Finally a catchy guitar line! And only 10 songs in! Frankly I would like to have a whole album of this kind of 60s pop shuffle. It's actually a bit hummable, and I think they can pull this off. Guys I think they might do it! They just have to not fall apart 3/4 of the way through and... Well they gave it a good try I guess. Still points for effort. Turn this off at the 2:21 mark and we could have gotten these guys into the highlights finally. You know what, I'm feeling charitable. "Tomblands" - This was just sloppy and felt like a practice session where the band was actively just trying out ideas. "The Saga" - While not my cup of tea, this at least had some good playing on in. In between the parts where it felt like the singer lost his lyric sheet and the band had to vamp for good long portions. I liked the little bits of surf guitar. "Road to Ruin" - This intermittently had some nice 60s inspired guitar on it, and can imagine an underserved band like Johnny Kidd and the Pirates being an inspiration, but its reach is well beyond its grasp, and ultimately feels overstuffed with half developed ideas. "What Became of the Likely Lads" - The sloppy out of time vocals in the verse destroy any goodwill the energetic playing has earned on this one. Imagine this song with professional, tight harmonies. So much of this albums could have been an ok sort of throwback record in more capable hands. "France" - This hidden track scotch taped onto the end of the previous one was rescued form the bin why? Is the also terrible acoustic noodling supposed to show us some hidden sensitive depths? If so, mission unaccomplished. Highlights - MIDLIGHTS - "Music When the Lights Go Out" - "Narcissist" - "What Katie Did" - "The Saga" LOWLIGHTS - "Can't Stand Me Now" - "Last Post on the Bugle" - "Don't Be Shy" - "The Man Who Would Be King" - "The Ha Ha Wall" - "Arbeit Macht Frei" - "Campaign of Hate" - "Tomblands" - "Road to Ruin" FINAL THOUGHTS Early 2000s garage revival felt fresh at the time, but VERY quickly lost its luster. Even the Strokes, whose first album I liked plenty I could not be bothered with after that. It's a very limited palette to begin with and all the best to do it were very melody forward underneath all that fuzz, and usually quickly evolved or became relics. Nuggets of a bygone era if you will. These guys are most definitely bringing up the very rear of that revival. The White Stripes, and the Hives were the best of that wave in my opinion, and both started strong and evolved ( The Hives less so). I don't care much for the Black Keys either, but at least those guys sounded like ace performers. I can't stress enough how unimpressed I was with the playing, the vocals, the songwriting on this. The only highlight for me overall was the production, which flattered these doofuses as much as was possible with a decent live-ish sound. Glad I was able to finally confirm my suspicions though. Go listen to any of the below recommendations before you throw another one any of these guys. Especially Guitar Romantic by the Exploding Hearts. Those guys dropped one excellent album and had their career cut short due to tragedy, but were light years ahead of anything I heard on this. That the Libertines album was so chock-full of wasted potential, makes the Exploding Hearts obscurity all the more infuriating. While there were glimmers of hope throughout ( brief as the were) they almost all turned out to be fool's gold, and I was glad when I was able to thrown down my pan and abandon this shitty bust of a claim. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Not sure I'll ever re-listen to this FURTHER LISTENING - Guitar Romantic by the Exploding Hearts - Is This It by the Strokes - White Blood Cells by the White Stripes - Veni Vidi Vicious by the Hives

Thin, ratty guitar rock with painfully dry production. Songwise, this record owes a massive debt to The Kinks though it can't match Ray Davies' melodic sense. Singer Carl Barât also borrows some of Davies' vocal mannerisms but without doing anything revolutionary or transformative.

I have never understood the appeal, and definitely not the success, of the Libertines. Sound shit.

Ive never heard of this band. But I understand why. The style isnt really appealing to me. Similar to what I said yesterday about The Stones this sound is a little too chaotic for my enjoyment. It felt a bit overwhelming for me. My favorite song was Music When The Lights Go Out

In the US this album wasn't on anyone's radar, so it couldn't possibly be overrated. But if I ever met someone who said they liked it, i'm sure I'd think differently of them now. I've heard of Pete Doherty but never knew why he had any notoriety (aside from his Aimee Winehouse connection). Of all the many, many bands from around the turn of the Century with the word "The" and then a single plural noun for a name, this is the worst I've one heard.

Whoever called this "landfill indie" was right. Produced with an apparent intention to be sloppy but actually just sloppy. Fuck it, it irritates me.

When they set out to make this album, did they have any idea how it was gonna sound? I hear Rockabilly in this on Narcissist, like this track feels less like a punk revival and more of a Kinks tribute. I hear so many disparate influences, and it feels like none of them have had any time to settle in, like a Meat Sauce that needs another 2 hours to simmer. First track has some genuinely pretty guitar work but the lyrics are not sticky enough for it to work, and why the fuck is there a harmonica solo??? You don’t fucking need it!!! The Ha Ha Wall has some genuinely good ideas that could’ve worked better if given the option to explore them more. I think they could’ve made a lot of these songs cooler if they weren’t comitted to this album being so explicitly commercial. As for a lot of the rest of the album, these guys don’t know when a phrase is good enough to be "the only phrase." Last Phrase on the Bungle riff is genuinely annoying. So is the acoustic fake out at the very end of the album. I was so ready for it to be over and then it’s so whatever acoustic jam. The vocalist is also just ripping off much better ones from this period, specifically Hamilton Liethauset of the Walkmen and Alex Turner (i suppose The Libertines predate Arctic Monkeys, but still AM improves on this p much every way) Also,,, MORRISSEY????? LIKE VERY OBVIOUSLY!! All of these English vocalists he’s taking heavy inspiration for, and it sounds so flat. And these girl group shoop shoop da da da’s, sang with such little affect, maybe the most egregious motifs on this album. The lyrics, too. God, so Nothing. Arbeit Macht Frei, how terrible. It’s not even saying anything interesting to say about it. This horrific concentration camp solo in a ooh rah singy song. Maybe they were going for a Victoria by the Kinks say, but it doesn’t work. It doesn’t work at all. I will say, the drummer has chops, I think, but if I could summate this album in one word, it would be "undistilled"

Ah yes, the poster boys for indie sleaze. This is more the pop version of garage rock revival. It has good riffs but it’s missing charisma. Hand claps? Subtle cowbell? Why? Listen to true purveyors of 2000’s garage rock revival on the list: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys. Maybe The Black Keys, Interpol and Bloc Party for cross reference. Never J**. We don’t talk about ***. Overall: 2/10

On the scale of bands being massively hyped in tabloids and music rags vs actual being good, The Libertines have to be on the podium. One or two songs are ok enough, but some are absolutely shockingly shite. So much of it is painfully annoying and at times just delivered completely half arsed. Probably the drugs but still. Having listened again 20 years older and wiser, I still cannot understand why this band were liked or got to anywhere near the heights they briefly ascended to.

As unoriginal and forgettable as it gets. There is no reason to listen to this over any Strokes, Arctic Monkeys or Franz Ferdinand record of the time, and I frankly wish I never bothered to put it on. The things I subject myself to for this generator…

Hints of punk but mostly pop-ish. Softie rock. Difficult to picture what their concert would even be like. Candles being passed around? What do these musicians actually have to say? This is as close to the definition of poser as you can get.

Musical genius or complete shite? I’m firmly in the latter camp. Nothing original going on. Sounds more like a demo than a finished album - and I get that’s probably the idea, but that only makes sense if the ‘live’ recording is capturing something spontaneously amazing in some way that can’t be captured in the studio. This is just rough and ready to the point of being a mess. And it’s considered their finest work! 1

I try to find something good in most albums, but I can't be bothered to try with this. This is terrible, and Doherty is an odious little smackhead whose vocal stylings are fucking insufferable. Not only should this not be on the list, its mere existence should be a criminal act. Awful people, awful band, awful album.

One of the most overblown, overhyped bands of the last 30 odd years. Remembered more for being drug buddies to the likes of Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse than any of their bland, posh boy slumming it less than average indie pap. Not one single redeeming feature. Would give 0 stars if I could.

The hype surrounding the drug-infused band "The Libertines" never interested me. I've also never consciously listened to any of their songs. As it turns out, that was a good thing. I find the album "The Libertines" awful. The band takes the liberty of singing terribly, and their guitars sound just as shitty. It's all really borderline. For me, the album, and probably the band, belong in the category of "The most successful shitty albums/bands."

There is nothing special about this music that makes it deserving to be on this list. And if I can clearly detect a strong accent of the singer, is it really singing? Don’t get me wrong, the music isn’t horrible, it’s jut forgettable.

Sorry but “Heroin: The Album” is so shambolic and useless to be even briefly entertaining. These guys definitely think they’re rock stars, but they’re mostly just shit.

This is a good example of where sometimes I judge the lifestyle of a musician over the actual music they make. I realise of course that in all its history, music has hundreds of examples where drugs have played a significant part in how the music was produced either good or bad and that in a lot of cases some of the masterpieces we now enjoy would not have come about if not for the part drugs played in the creation of the music. I also accept that drug addiction can be construed as an illness. But in the case of this album I was aware of the exploits of Pete Doherty before I’d heard even a note of his music. In fact his lifestyle put me off this album despite the musical press praising it. Pete Doherty is no role model and I cannot condone his behaviour and certainly not buy or listen to his music. 1/5 21/3/25

The kind of scruffy, clownish, pork-pie-hat-wearing shambolic music that's exceptionally cringeworthy and dated, and ultimately led to the nauseous, insincere folk-indie so horrifically embodied by Mumford and Sons. At least their Britpop predecessors knew how to rock, how to add a good riff, no matter how shit their songs were, but this is so excessively in love with its own chintzy decadence that it instantly becomes a self-destructive parody without merit or value.

Imo nie na darmo ten album trafił na trzecie miejsce najbardziej overrated albumów w historii (z drugiej strony trafili tam też Beatlesi - Sgt. Peppers - i The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead, a to już jest kryminał). Nie mogłem się doczekać, aż się skończy, wynudziłem się koszmarnie. Gdyby tę listę układał ktokolwiek, kto nie urodził się w centrum Imperium Brytyjskiego, to ten album nie byłby nawet brany pod uwagę. Serio, nie jestem w stanie powiedzieć nic konstruktywnego, w zasadzie przestałem słuchać po kilku utworach. Jest tysiąc zespołów, które robiło podobne rzeczy, tylko wiele lat wcześniej i lepiej.

Bwleh, dit vind ik dus helemaal niks. Alles dreint, mauwt en rammelt, als een viering van het vijfentwintigjarigjubileum van de pruttelgaragepunk. Regelmatig zit het 'ertegenaan' (artiestenjargon voor 'vals') en nog vaker er ver overheen. Het cirkelt om de Frans Bauer-grens heen. Omdat sommige stukken écht niet zijn aan te horen, en vanwege de algehele overschatting van dit flutalbum, duiken ze eronder.

The Libertines seem to have mastered mediocre recreation of a sound made by thousands of better bands 10 or 20 years earlier than them. If this album came out in the 70s, then it might actually be kind of good in comparison. As it stands, it is truly unimpressive and absolutely does not deserve a spot on this list.

Ahh was this unfortunate. Not only was it monotone and garage bandy but also consisted of horrible vocals and people who thought they were better than they really are. Couldn’t really tell you one good thing about this. Sick and tired of these albums!

Pete Doherty was (is?) a colossal dickhead, and I have enormous sympathy with addicts, but the man has always been a tosser of the highest order even when sober. The Libertines were shit when this came out and it hasn't aged any better, it's crap indie rock brought down to an even lower level by their inability to construct anything original, dynamic or refined. Fuck off with your 1/5 and don't bother me again.

Too British-poppy for me

This was not a good album. I do not need indie music let alone British Indie music.

Poor, nothing worth listening

I'm getting so bored with british music from this list. I cant find anything redeeming or interesting about this album. Its sooo boring. Its got like one halfway decent track that I probably wont listen to ever again. 1/5

Not hearing anything too compelling here. Feels apathetic all around. I remember a girl in my highschool being super into Pete Doherty. I have to wonder, if it wasn't for that demographic would this album be notable? No desire to listen to this again. 1

Ugh, Pete Doherty has got to be one of the all-time most revolting humans on the planet. I feel like I need 6 weeks in rehab just from looking at him. And he's a talentless hack to boot. I don't know much of his music, but I'm not hearing anything special here. I'm more well-acquainted with his train-wreck of a relationship with another disgusting human being, Kate Moss. They're both foul and they deserved each other. Weak sauce.
