Reviews (page 11 of 14)
Always found Velvet Underground interesting but nothing that really holds my attention
A bit dusty for my taste.
I want to return to this one. Didn’t have time during the new years shuffle.
Too trippy and droning for me
Schädelbrummer
Nico ruins everything.
Not as good as the other VU album.
It's definitely a lot noisy (initially I said a bit but I had to skip Heroin & now my tinnitus is going) & a lot arty. I bet this lot were insufferable. But I don't mind the more chilled melodic ones. I had to stop before the end because tinnitus was being induced again
Not really my thing, a bit slow and tiring
I have trouble getting through this album, but I can't deny its historical significance. I don't necessarily have a negative feeling about it, I just also don't have a positive feeling about it.
Is it influential? Sure. Is everything that it influenced way more interesting? Absolutely.
Liked some of this, the rest wasn’t great.
i feel like im just listening to a loop every 4 sec. not saying it's bad tho
Notable Songs: I'm waiting for the man, Venus in Furs
Iconic album cover. Great guitar. Some I love, some are too experimental for my taste, I can see why they could never hit mainstream.
I’ve always seen this album art but never listened. I was surprised this sound existed in ‘64. I really liked it.
Sunday morning og Venus in furs er jævlig bra. Ellers ok
Yeah the influence is undeniable, but musically this one’s pretty mid overall. There’s some good songs in here, but definitely far from their best work
Didn't love it didn't hate it. The album has some really good songs like Sunday Morning but I am not sure if what I liked outweighed the songs I didn't like on this album. There were some parts that were so noisy I got a headache especially the last song. So I really dont know about this album
Okay, track three. Nico SAVED this album bruh.. Run run run is buns buns buns. there have been a lot more lowlights in this than i expected, i see the influential nature of the record. But from a recreational enjoyment standpoint, yeah good luck. FUCK YOU ANDY WARHOL
Solide album all around 7.5/10
After Run Run Run, the album went downhill. It seems like they were just making noise for the sake of making noise. The Black Angel's Death Song features screeching violins and air compressor noises for some reason. Favourite songs: Run Run Run, I'm Waiting For The Man, Venus in Furs, There She Goes Again, Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale Least favourite songs: The Black Angel's Death Song, European Son, All Tomorrow's Parties 3/5
Obviously a heavy influence on so many musicians and trends and genres but just listening today I'm at about 50% on songs on this album and skipping the last couple feedback heavy minutes of several tracks based on my wife's reactions lol 4 tracks added to 1001 Experience Playlist
Not bad!
It didn't capture me as much as other albums do but I have to give it to Velvet they're influential as hell. And the album cover is pretty dope too.
I can leave without hearing Heroin again, but there are so many great songs on here
Oooooo.... Velvet Underground with Andy Warhol cover art! I'm already feeling the transforming waves of cool and hipness just at the prospect of listening to it. This critical darling didn't exactly win me over but I didn't dislike it either. I liked it more than I thought I would but I found it to be pretty uneven. At times I was digging it and at other times it was grating noise. Nico's off-tone singing didn't do much for me but I can kind of understand the appeal in this specific context. The highs and lows average out to a solid 3 for me.
It was okay I was mostly aware of the album cover more than the music. It was interesting, and I can see the influence they had but this isn’t my jam.
Fun and inspiring 3/5
Ok album with one good song
yllättävän mielenkiintone albumi! kuitekaa ei ehkä omaa mieleen the one mut kansikuva oli cool ja ilmeisesti banaanin sai auki which was very cool!
Good most of the way through, some really annoying squeaky bits though that bring it down a lot (tracks 7, 10, 11). Sounds like a 2010s alternative album at times, so I guess ahead of it's time. Favorite track: Sunday Morning
This is one of those weird albums. That sounds like a different member of the band did different songs... Definitely a huge 60s vibe. I recognized Lou Reed's voice. And Femme Fatale is the first track that I recognized.
It feels like a mix of The Doors and The Ramones. It is undoubtedly good, but it's a style I only want in small doses.
Previously rated: Nico - Chelsea Girl (1/5) ************************** I had heard this album once before. I remember kind of liking it, but not enjoying the Nico songs. I can get into the low production, garage rock sound on tracks like "I'm Waiting for the Man," "Run Run Run," and "Heroin," though the latter song does too long as does the final track "European Son," which is just noise for the last several minutes and leaves a bad taste. This may be an iconic album, but it's not a brilliant one. Nico sucks. Low 3/5 rating.
Not really my thing, but it's ok. Think the lady sounds like Phoebe Buffet.
5/10 - 3 Popular Songs(Front Loaded) - Less than 5 great songs Starts strong with good melody and catchy songs, but trends towards more obscure later. Some decent hippie rock songs on it -- Ends on a jam sess (6/10)
Some crazy songs on this one, like heroin. I don't know what I was expecting but that was definitely different
Totoally not my style. Loud and annoying
Pretty good? Definitely some catchy stuff here, but not something I’d go out of my way to listen to.
I don't need to say anything about this album that hasn't been already said. (I don't like numeric ratings, I just give 3 to anyone)
Some good songs, some ok songs, some quirky songs, some wack songs.
Good album but not their best. That title goes to white light/white heat. The Velvets didn’t need Nico and her crazy German accented singing nor Andy Warhol. Let Lou be Lou. Case and point: I’m waiting for the man.
The album is 3/5, because it didn't peak my interest nor fit my music taste.
I’m not sure where to go with this one. I know it has its fans. I know it has significance. It’s quite interesting in that it’s more of an art project than a bunch of people getting together and being a proper band. It’s easy to see why it didn’t sell many copies, it’s a perfectly acceptable album of its time. But not amazing. But I get why over time it’s become more than the sum of its parts to inspire other people.
This was fine. Seems like one of those influential building blocks that is really tough to see in retrospect was such a big deal, because everything that built off of it was so much more interesting.
Nice mix of soothing vocals, classic rock and roll sound, pretty sounds and jingle jangle noise. i approve
Rock & Roll is one of the greatest tracks of all time but none of this gets near to that level. Alternates between quite good, unlistenably crap and just a bit dull. Not bad but not exactly good either
1. Sunday Morning - i liked this one it had a nice mellow sound 2. I’m Waiting for the Man - this one was ok, nothing extra memorable for me 3. Femme Fatale - I did not like this one, the lyrics were odd and the sound was not that great for me. 4. Venus in Furs - I kinda liked this one, it had more my kind of lyrics. 5. Run Run Run - this one was ok...i did not like the guitar solo in the airpods it sounded static-like or distorted, I think it's a sound quality issue. 6. All Tomorrow’s Parties - this one was also not my type of sound. 7. Heroin - i actually like the sound of this one, but again I really don't like the lyrics, i don't want to hear about heroin so i knew i'd hate this one from the title. 8. There She Goes Again - again not loving the lyrics...the music is catchy. I'd like to note this song goes for 2:41 so what's all this about short songs being a new thing for the tiktok generation. 9. I’ll Be Your Mirror - 2:14!!!! also another nico feature, i just don't like the way she sounds. 10. The Black Angel’s Death Song - this one has quite an interesting sound, it's eerie which fits the theme 11. European Son - weird sound effect of crashing, it kinda worked. now the tempo's faster so that's kinda cool. the rest of the song is instrumental and it's seven minutes long... overall, i appreciate parts of this album, some parts are ok and the overall sound is nice for me. I don't like the lyrics of many of the songs and I think it is the feature of nico where I do not like the vocals.
I think at a different point in my life I would have really enjoyed this one, but it just didn't excite me this go around
Venus in furs is a 10
ok.
Great album, some of the tracks are a bit too high pitched for my ears though
For an album as famous as it is, it's not as exciting as I had expected
Classic sound
um.... ok. i think if you were there it might have been super.
It may sound harsh, but I was slightly dreading the day I would have to review this. The last thing I really want to do is piss someone off over a music review. But saying what I'm about to say might be one of the ways of doing it. First, let me start with one thing. I am very aware of how widely influential this album is. Across many different genres and spaces of music, and through many different songwriting styles. Many of which I love deeply. And I am not going to try and take that away from this album. This is an important piece in the history of modern rock music. But I'm also not going to sit here and pretend like I enjoy this anymore than those bands this album had so much influence on. This, to me, gets far outclassed in many ways by the other albums that exist because of it. I will say, because this is such a landmark album, it feels like an actual experimental rock album compared to some that are given that tag that are considerably more tame. But the record is almost experimental to its own detriment. Songs like The Black Angel's Death Song and European Son are cool sounding, but slightly novel and not that enjoyable. The lyrics are also dark, sexually charged, and borderline macabre. On the surface, you might not really notice it, but if you dig deeper, you can see why this album's content upset so many at a time where people weren't supposed to write about things like that. Of the two singers featured on this, I find that Lou Reed's voice fits this sound far better than Nico's. Coincidentally, the songs featuring Nico as the lead vocalist are the ones I don't really enjoy all that much. I fully understand why so many people hold this album to a level many artists dream of reaching. Some audiences prefer this gloomy, stripped back, and more lo-fi sound, and that's totally fine. But is this objectively #15 of all time material? I'm not so sure. I just don't think it is fair to judge and review an album so positively purely based on the merit that it inspired so much amazing music, when the actual musical foundation the album is built on isn't all that strong to begin with. Rating: 6/10
Is it cool? Yes Is it interesting? Can I see why it’s held up as an all time classic? Yes Am I ever likely to listen again? Probably not Definition of a 3/5
It was ok
Sunday Morning - 9/10 I'm Waiting or The Man - 8/10 Femme Fatale - 9/10 Venus in Furs - 7.5/10 Run Run Run - 7.5/10 All Tomorrow's Parties - 7.5/10 Heroin - 7/10 There She Goes Again - 7.5/10 I'll Be Your Mirror - 8/10 The Black Angel's Death Song - 7.5/10 European Son - 7/10 TOTAL - 85.5/110
Sunday Morning Femme Fatale I'm Waiting For The Man Heroin European Son I'll Be Your Mirror There She Goes Again The Black Angel's Death Song All Tomorrow's Parties Venus In Furs Run Run Run
p114. 1967. 3 stars. The perfect response to the Summer of Love, and very much a mixed bag. There are some stone cold classics on this (Venus In Furs, I'm Waiting For The Man) and it was hugely influential on late 70s punk/new wave. Set against that is a lot of filler - European Son is just noise - and Nico can't sing. Still worth a listen after 50+ years/
Interesting, almost pre-punk. But dated.
classic rock
Sunday morning e poco altro
not bad
3.2
2.5 good album. Can hear a lot of modern bands in some of their songs. Kasabian jumped out at me
Bought it as a student, because that's the law. Tried it, didn't really get on with it - Reed's voice in particular is too flat. But undeniably influential - classics everywhere and across pop culture

den är väl rätt så bra
Banana
I can see in 1967 this album would be radical but it doesnt quite hold up for me now.
banananananannaanannananannan/10
Not a big fan of Lou Reed or his sound, but this wasn't bad. Relatively mellow but I'm sure it was much more groundbreaking in 1967.
I enjoyed the first three songs. They're upbeat and catchy. The 60 was a great time.
While I can understand the significance this must have had on alternative rock - especially considering it came out at 67, which feels crazy I early - I’m finding it hard to name songs that are actually good. ‘Sunday Morning’ is a classic that I’ve heard many times, but it’s a song more fitting of a soundtrack or something, rather than something I want to listen to like this. Same goes for many other songs. It’s just not something I really want to listen to.
><><><><><><><><><><
Bits of it were interesting but in no way was this worthy of any critical acclaim
Albums ok. They are supposed to be one of the pioneers of punk but really it’s mellow music to drive to or cook dinner on a Sunday.
Þetta er rosa broody. Gott broody.
The brilliance of this album always seems to be lost in the chaos for me, but I'm always impressed that it's from 1967.
This made me relapse into my alter identity as an insufferable lesbian who ardently adheres to the cynicism and dissatisfaction Sylvia Plath imparts upon her readers in The Bell Jar. She is one crazy bitch, but I adore her to pieces.
So here's the thing: I like it. And I actually understand the influential nature of it, which is rare for this genre with me. It transcends musical eras and inspires creativity in the truest form. Still, maybe I'm not musically cultured enough to relate with that. I don't think I'm begging to come back to it from a listener's perspective, but from a student of music perspective I will definitely be returning. After enough studying this may become a 5 star for me but based purely on the first listen at this moment, I have to go with my heart.
C+ Sunday Morning - 4 I’m Waiting for the Man - 2 Femme Fatale - 4 Venus In Furs - 3 Run Run Run - 3 All Tomorrow’s Parties - 2 Heroin - 3 There She Goes Again - 3 I’ll Be Your Mirror - 3 The Black Angel’s Death Song - 3 European Son - 1 Self-Titled is better.
Liked the beginning, but the end of the album my ears hurt.
Ok
I'm familiar with some of the songs (Heroin and Sunday Morning) but I've never really gotten into the Velvet underground much. Just doesn't hit me right I guess.
Not bad
Good classic psych rock with the most chill I've damn ever seen. Some cuts such as the druggily brooding Venus in Furs persistently push the over-bearing boundaries both for the better and worse. The overstayed Heroin is an example of the worse. European Son is a psychedelic masterpiece though.
Heard it before: Yes Enjoy it?: Yeah, it has a very smooth feel and charm to it Favourite song: Track 2 - I’m Waiting For The Man
It has some moments of genius, but some of the record is just bad. Favorite song: there she goes again
The Velvet Underground seems to be a group that makes albums that I'm not crazy about, yet I still look back at listening to fondly. At least, that was my experience with this and White Light/White Heat. The songs that I like make me ignore the boring parts. But then, I remember the amount of time I spent during this album waiting for a boring song to end. I wouldn't say I'm super into either of the albums I've heard, but I do think they're cool and I understand why their albums are so acclaimed. I assume that I will grow to like the songs I do like more and this will become a 4 in my eyes, but only time will tell. My favourite songs were Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale, and Venus in Furs.
it was fine but whatevs
This is the second Velvet Underground album I've been served up. The first one was grungy. This one was folky and easy to listen to.
The Velvet Underground & Nico is groovy enough and pretty ahead of its time. Doesn't entirely enthrall me but I respect it. 3.
The album that inspired countless musicians. Some tracks are a little bit too experimental for my taste, but there's a couple od stand-out tracks like "Venus In Furs".
I really like the opener Sunday Morning. it's so pretty and stoner-esque. I like a few of the songs but overall i'm having trouble getting into this album. it's my first time ever listening to it in full. I like a lot if the instrumentals but some of them hurt my ears.
Seems my review of this went missing, I basically said it was more interesting and psychedelic than Sgt pepper and I quite enjoyed it but on the whole it's not a genre for me.
Can hear the influence on loads of other music, and the lyrics are generally excellent throughout. Still couldn't get into it and wouldn't return though.
Had never listened to Velvet Underground before but thought this was pretty good. Apparently it was very influential in its day, I can see why. Highlights: All Tomorrow's Parties Heroin Venus In Furs
Too discordant and experimental for my tastes
it has a banana. I've heard very mixed opinions about this album personally. I find it kind of appealing sometimes, but overall it just gets me closer to a headache. The last track is nice though.
Very interesting stuff. It's kind of hard for me to pretend I like it though. 3.5 stars
A trippy album. Not sure I get it, but I'm glad I listened to it twice.
This album absolutely belongs on this list. There is a lot to listen to here; while not all enjoyable it is all interesting. It is like art I would go visit in a museum, and appreciate and talk about, but not buy to take home to hang over the couch.
So I’ve seen this album around quite a lot before and came to recognise how much of a classic this album is seen as, so really I had high expectations and I’ll be honest they weren’t met. I’ll start by saying that for the time this album was made I respect the sounds the band were going for as some of the harsher instrumentals seem even a bit alien to someone like me listening to them now but I’ll be honest, half of these songs gave me a headache and were genuinely not the nicest to listen to. The album opens up with ‘Sunday Morning’ which is a lovely almost lullaby-esque start to the record which genuinely feels like waking up on a peaceful Sunday morning. The chimes in the background really help to cement this feeling and the backing vocals on the latter half of this track are a great addition too. This goes well with the next 2 tracks, the first “I’m Waiting For The Man’ is a nice upbeat rock song which sounds really typical of the classic rock era and the second ‘Femme Fatale’ is a gorgeous track with a female vocalist taking over and a slightly stripped back instrumental which makes way for such a nice listen. I also have to mention ‘Run Run Run’ and ‘There She Goes Again’ which give some more of this classic rock sound that is so pleasing to hear, and ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ which follows the female vocalist again giving a very soft vocal performance which makes this another stand out track. For the other 5 tracks on this record I really don’t know what to say, I do kind of hope that just because this is my first listen they throw me off guard as I’m sure at another time they might click for me, but the instrumentals on some of these are honestly painful. It’s just hard to tell where the band were going with these as the vocals are completely overshadowed by these harrowing screeching tones as in the song ‘The Black Angel’s Death Song’ or in the last 2 minutes of ‘Heroin’. Then there are songs such as ‘Venus In Furs’ which is just covered in this horrific bagpipe-like sound screeching in the back which really takes away from the rest of the song. I have to say I don’t actually mind ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’ it just goes on a bit too long for me with that instrumental. Finally there’s the closer ‘European Son’ which starts off quite promising reaching for that classic rock sound again until it is overwhelmed by this screeching and unorthodox guitar fill which for the nearly 8 minutes this track runs for can get pretty tiring. Overall, this record left me with mixed emotions, I feel that over time I will probably come to love each of the tracks that I’ve criticised here as they’re just a bit harder to swallow initially but this is based on my first listen and right now I’m pretty divided on this album, so I’ll leave it at that. 3/5
it's good, I like it
bien joué Nico
Not quite my cup of tea but I can appreciate it.
I'm usually a sucker for rock, but nothing truly stood out to me on this one
Lou Reed > The Velvet Underground. That's just my opinion.
Kaksi persoonallisuutta: vaatimattomat parin minuutin rallatukset (Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale, There She Goes Again..) vastaan kunnianhimoiset kokeilut (Venus in Furs, Heroin..).
Got this back to back with 'Goo'. This one is a little bit better. I don't get most of the songs though.
Fine I guess
3 stars.
Solid 3.5, much prefer it to other albums of its time
meh, nothing special.
Not an easy listen in parts
While I enjoyed how raw this album felt at times, songs like Run Run Run actually hurt my ears. 3/5. Favorite Track: Heroin
Not my thing, but not a bad album
Not the type of music I thought they were. Heroin !
Easy, just easy. Bonus for Lou Reed's voice
idk why this exists
Cool album. Early Lou Reed.
It’s very decent. I can never work out whether I love or hate Nico’s voice.
Alright.
Feels a bit like a mixed bag, some great songs, some weird ones. Really enjoyed "All Tomorrow's Parties".
i dont know. 3.5/5
Ehhh. Not bad, but not very engaging.
Don't you just love Heroin (the song)? Nolan: Yuh
Any song with Nico is a big NO for me. I really dislike her boring, sleepy, unusually low and monotone voice. Not sure if the songs were good at all, because I just can’t stand her voice that much. Immediately skipped. That said, I was surprised that I kinda dug the deconstructed vibe of the rest of the album. ‘European Son,’’ ‘I’m waiting for the man’ and ‘Venus in Furs’ were the songs I most liked.
It started well, but ended up being a little too experimental from time to time.
Same old sound of that time.
cool album. I was introduced to this from Heroin being on The Doors movie soundtrack. Can definitely see how ahead of the times they were.
sunday morning has been a fave since i was in high school, it has a certain vibe that’s just pristine.
A really fascinating album, that never drags. I loved some tracks on this and strongly disliked others. ‘Heroin’ is revolutionary but I’m not a big fan of the screeching viola towards the end of the track. Overall, a really interesting experience of an album. I’m sure my rating of this will change over time.
Im ok with Velvet underground when its 1 song. A whole album I dont enjoy
Pretty mid
somehow heroin is simultaneously the low and the high point of this album. it's an enjoyable listen, but i'm not sure what's so groundbreaking about it. still enjoyed it either way, tho european son is evil
Influential. But overrated.
A crazy mix of styles of music that is sort of confusing when put together. It would be interesting to have heard this when it came out. Overall, I think it's better in retrospect considering the time it came out.
A little strange but not bad.
Never really listened to this before but have heard of The Velvet Underground. This albums got an interesting mix of different songs. Femme Fatales great, Venus In Furs is fantastic. I can see the albums influence on what came after. But by no means is this a perfect album how I've judged my other 5s. The recording is super poor it Just sounds rough and not in a good way.
Meanders a bit for my taste. Haha. But I get why it's a classic.
Me gusta Sunday Morning.
Sunday Morning is a good song. Even though there is a despressing feel to this music, I can't help but like it. Lou Reed had something that was attractive even though he seemed to be chasing everyone away. That attractiveness somehow comes through the music. The album is different from others of the era, though I could swear I heard some Dylan influence at times. Not into the disorganized chaotic free falls but some of it is very nice.
Very interesting album, can see some how it influenced future rock music. Not a fan of avant garde so some songs were not very appealing but still provided a great listening experience. Will have to listen to multiple times to appreciate some more.
One of those albums that when it is on it's fantastic and when it is not it's cacophonous nonsense.
A wonderfully lo-fi, more coherent VU effort that expertly straddles the line between chaotic freeform and musical excellence. The more improvisational nature means some tracks do come across as rambling (and the LP nearly falls apart in the back half), but those that stick to the message while living it up a little are a joy to listen to.
Not a big fan of the experimental sound. I'm Waiting for the man is the best one though.
It's an interesting listen like many mid 1960's albums. Cool sounds and grooves. I suppose the lyrical content is a bit more unusual than similar era fare, buying drugs, sadomasochism, etc. I do prefer Lou over Nico though. Rolling Stones fans should enjoy it.
Really good album although I was over it by the last track.
Not bad
Due to the time it was recorded in, the quality of the recording can be a little hard on the ears. However, this does not reduce the quality of the album based on liking. I think it's a nice album. However, I don't find myself listening to this again.
It was ok. Didn't do much for me. Didn't hate it. Would be 2.5 starts if available.
Some of it's very fun and interesting, while the rest is just psychedelic tinged trite that needed a stern trimming. 3
Apart from Venus is furs, I don't really see what the fuss was about
this one is hard for me to finish. The last track is a real nerve wracking son of a bitch. But I love the way the album starts so its hard to rate. Solid in the middle album.
2.8 - didn’t enjoy this much as I anticipated I would.
3.5/5 Interesting rock album. Has interesting song concepts/sounds, but several sections were just unpleasant to listen to. Sunday Morning and Venus in Furs were the ones I liked best.
Not really an album that I would go back to listen to, but I will say that the second track is titled Sunday Morning and this album came up on a Sunday and it was a beautiful Sunday. I was out walking my dog so it was quite appropriate. The next few songs all followed the same vibe so it made the morning walk and start to my day uplifting.
Ne zashlo. Banan krasivyj. Endi Vorhal chtoly?
6/10. I liked it all right
good, think the album art is more iconic than the music though
Interesting, sounded like some more modern indie at points
band female male liminal mellow soft lonely sparkly
I didn't hate it but I wasn't blown away either. It has it place on the list but for me it was a one and done.
The first half is iconic, the second half hurt my ears, and I used to make noise for crying out loud.
Not as good as Loaded but still fun
3/5 nice, but not enough
Much better than expected above average art rock. Still - it’s art rock, and Lou Reed is overrated.
bonito album perono esmi tipo jjjajjfj
Íkonísk. Þægileg og skemmtileg.
Deserves another listen.
Ihan jeppis, ne pari klassikkobiisiä tältä levyltä on ne klassikot ihan syystä. Muu vähän helposti unohdettavaa.
banana
Really enjoyed Sunday Morning and Venus in Furs but this almost felt like Bob Dylan’s less wordy clone. Felt like a classic album which means some were great and some were just eh.
Some of it's very fun and interesting, while the rest is just psychedelic tinged trite that needed a stern trimming.
About this band Ive only had the warhol banana reference. Listened it and didnt like at all, but it is not bad.
Great album. Not a fan of nico
Definitely feels of its time. It can be a little to droning and sharp for me
Makes sense that this would be hugely influential, but I don’t know that I’d put it on to listen regularly.
I can understand their influence, but I continue to fail seeing why they are such a legendary band. Nothing stood out on this particular album.
Great atmosphere but hasn't necessarily aged well because what was maybe a first back then and very influential, has now, 55 years later, been done often and better
Not bad. Very avant garde for its time. And I can certainly see how it's loose, dgaf style was so influential on the New York CBGB types. Overall, it wasn't a bad listen. Some good tracks all produced by people who can't really sing.
3.5/5
Have you ever been in an elevator, being steadily and pleasantly elevated one floor after another, only to have the cables break and you suddenly plummet towards the bottom of the shaft? And then the cables are magically repaired and you go up a couple more floors before plunging down again? You've probably never been in that situation, but I have an idea of what it might feel like after having "The Velvet Underground & Nico" repeatedly cable-cut by the Nico songs. I was having a good time, and then Nico's voice intruded upon the flow. Nico is out-of-place here and I don't dig her voice. The rest of the album is good-to-great. Some songs feel like they imitate the Beatles or the Stones without enough to stand out or differentiate themselves, but in other places The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed unleash a punk aesthetic that would inspire the future as much as they were inspired by the past. -1 star for Nico though.
7,5
Interesting album, sounds like it was made in a weekend. Not my cup of tea, but it's influences are there.
Good
Cool 60s rock album with poetic lyrics about drugs, death and other stuff. I like it.
Klurigt!
I liked the sound, but I think I need to listen to this a few more times to better understand it. I think it was more important in its time.
Started out strong, it's long jams frustrated me
not really my thing
2021.11.22
a somewhat barren album with shades of art pop, folk punk, hippie rock, psychedelic screeching, and everything in between. not quite my cup of tea, but you have to respect how they packed so many foundational ideas into a single album
Is this on the list twice?
2.5
I feel like I was supposed to like this album more than I did. I can appreciate how revolutionary this was when it was recorded but I didn’t really enjoy listening to it.
This is the debut album of the band The Velvet Underground, recorded during an art tour with Andy Warhol. This album was ignored by consumers & critics when released and even banned from stores for its dark lyrics. But years later it's regarded as one of the most influential rock/alternative/pop albums, and described as the original art-rock record. This was a "prophetic" rock album released too early to be commercially successful, but was a sign of what was to come in rock music's future. A great album to listen to, with experimental sounds, dark lyrics, and a trip for the ears all the way through.
Fine
Better than the last but still washed over me
Good album
alcune belle, alcune pessime dai
Pretty okay. Slow, mellow songs all the way through. 0RS
Classic
I know this album too well
I like that the album art is a banana
Some songs were chaotic but others were had a solid melodic structure
Déjà écouté
Solid
Ah, this is your brain not on drugs (or on less hard drugs). A completely different album than their sophomore attempt. Very Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Frankie & Annette etc. in terms of its upbeat tempos and bubblegum rock feel. The lyrics are a bit edgier of course but it still feels like safe/G-rated 60s rock more than half the time. Even when it goes dark it doesn't really feel that way given the musical arrangements. A bit of a Bob Dylan feel. Sunday Morning is a very inviting opener - I'm sure the old folks and middle agers thought "oh now this is a nice band" hearing it. Femme Fatale has some awful distortion in it and is one of a few darker tracks with some unusual musical accompaniment (3,4,7,10). A bit schizophrenic in terms of whether they are happy rock (I'll be Your Mirror) or edgy rock (Heroin). A fine album but nothing truly remarkable about it.
I hated White Light/White Heat but I went into this ready to give it a chance. I'd call Side 1 (the first six tracks) a 4, maybe even a 5. Great song-writing. Venus in Furs is probably the nicest sounding song ever written about BDSM. I really liked the droning viola in this. All Tomorrow's Parties is an excellent song - I knew the cover version by Japan, but never heard the original. Good stuff. Side 2 has way too much annoying feedback and sloppy guitar, similar to White Light/White Heat, which makes me want to give Side 2 a 2 at best. In fact, after listening to these two albums, I think Lou Reed was just a lousy guitarist who covered it up by playing noise solos. Ever time Lou Reed plays a sloppy solo filled with feedback I want to punch him, which would be rude since he's dead. I'll give the whole thing a 3. I understand its influence, but I can't take the noise.
This is like my 4th VU or Nico album so far, and I really just... don't get it. It's all very dreary. I can appreciate the historical significance, but it's really just not for me.
Actually not as bad as I was expecting! Good 60s pop and garage rock. I can understand why it is so influential. Terrible noisiness in European Son, which is quite a good song for the first 2 minutes.
3.5
A slower softer listen than I was expecting with some very experimental sections. Favorite song was probably Sunday Morning.
It’s velvet underground. It’s good if you’re in the mood
Meh
Read up on the history of the album, will probably have to listen to it again, but for sure certain songs and lyrics in this album sure hit in a way. Uh, that last song though. Was never a fan of long af instrumentals to end off with, this ones just a shit ton of noise that vaguely sounds like music.
There’s a lot of music we wouldn’t have without this album.
I liked it more than I thought. The slightly out of tune guitars and the chaos throughout really made it something that lingered in my brain.
May 6, 2021. Not what I expected, but pretty cool
Fine, but not particularly interesting.
Leuk vibennn
3,2 Hey, i like this, dit is best oké. Andy warhol cover also goat
Great at the beginning, too noisy by the end
Expected I was going to like this more than I did. Love Nico’s voice. The tracks didn’t ‘go anywhere’ enough for me.
it's decent! yea not as brutal as the Nico solo album. She's used sparingly here and somehow her voice sounds alright. The rest is fine, though I still stand by the fact most of the popularity is due to the Warhol clique connection.
Listening to this album all the way through has been fun and entertaining. A lot of Bob Dylan vibes further into the album, but I guess that's just the product of its time.
I had a great time listening to this, I thought the voice in 'I'll be you're mirror' was interesting to listen to, and I liked the different themes I found them kind of captivating
Wouldnt buy
Too much for office tunes
Not bad.
I love the album cover, but most of the songs are unlistenable to modern ears. Nico is really bad.
Being important does not make an album good.
Heroin mola European Son
I guess this is ok... Never been a huge fan. Heroin and Sunday Mornings are good. Mostly art songs that don't do it for me. As a whole I'll give it a 3.
some fragments sound good, but in general it is too bland for me, though it does sound that guitarists know what they are doing.
Good album up to the last noisy song, otherwise would have given higher marks
not my style, but not bad.
Very Wes Anderson esque
6/10
Should listen again.
Half good songs, half bad
2.5 rounded up. Started strong, hated Heroin, really hated the last song.
I'll need more listens because I think I get the hype but I'm not too sure... It sounds fairly timeless, though
Acho que sempre me canso rápido desse álbum
Good old classics, enjoyed a few songs, others I did not particularly enjoy
Production was a little tingy and ran alittle too long
Another iconic album with very controversial lyrics for that period of time. I imagine how shocked my grandparents must have been when listening to this kind of music and how revolutionary it must have been. Aaaand yes, there were drugs involved...for sure.
Lou Reed is a great musician but not really a big fan of this sound.
I know this is legendary, but I think I need to give it a few more runs to get it.
More influential than good. Can't give an album with "Sunday Morning" and "I'm Waiting For The Man" one star, but having to listen to Nico makes me want to. 2/5 stars
It's absolutely roasting in the UK right now. This definitely has about as much energy as me. "I am tired, I am weary, I could sleep, for thousand years!" I've seen this album lots of places over the years, I am aware of it's status and the scenes it's reported to have influenced and created. I am reviewing this based on the album not the legacy. 1) *** [Sunday Morning] - Dreamy, hazy start. 2) ** [I'm waiting for the man] - Jazzy. Feels a bit one tone. Piano is rhythm instrument here. Bassline is tidy. 3) * [Femme Fatale] - No. These vocals ain't it - not sure if it's the recording quality or the voice cracking. Beach boys style backing vocals. 4) ***** [Venus in Furs] - Folky, tribal, drone, hypnotic - best so far. 5) ** [Run, Run, Run] - Bluesy rock, sounds of it's era. The guitar solo is - something?! The drums sound really hollow. The bassline carries this. 6) * [All Tomorrows Parties] - Fun piano lick, I can't get on with Nico at all. The lead guitar jangles about discordantly. Too monotone to be this long. 7) *** [Heroin] - The drums that slowly build like a racing heart is fantastic. Feels a bit like a drugged up U2. 8) *** [There she goes again] - This sounds a lot like Dylan. It's an inoffensive 60s rock track. A coherent guitar solo spotted in the wild. The tempo shift towards the end is fun. 9) * [I’ll Be Your Mirror] - Nothing going on here apart from Nico. I am sorry Nico. I won't let you be my eyes. I'd rather risk the bad luck and break this mirror. 10) *** [The Black Angel’s Death Song] - Yes! The discordant strings are back. Feels like a cowboy fighting a demon? 11) [European Son] Energetic bassline. They literally threw the kitchen sink at this. Guitar is rancid. It's all over the place. It's a trainwreck. Overall - 2.2 without Nico it would hit a 3. I can see how it was an influence for many, but I won't return again most likely. On the car playlist : [Venus in Furs] [The Black Angel's Death Song]
So I used to think of this as one of the great classic albums. In the context of 1000 greats, I think the generally misogynistic, talk pop noise rock record including lines like "you'd better hit her" doesn't belong. 3/10
↑: Heroin, The Black Angel's Death Song ↓: Femme Fatale, There She Goes Again, European Son
Need to listen again. I first heard this 20 something years ago. Back then I liked it but felt it tailed off towards the end. However, this time I thought it was shite. Maybe because I was on a long car journey with no air con. So I will revisit
The third Velvet Underground album I've had on this list, and it's 3/3 in terms if pretty rubbish albums. Some ok parts, some crap parts and some god-awful parts. The end of Heroin is like nails on a chalk board and the last track is just nonsense. Uninspiring, turgid and ultimately forgettable. I hope I don't hear any more Lou Reed.
Something to be studied, not necessarily enjoyed.
Influential <> a great listen. Veered between OK, through kind of annoying, to super annoying (European Son; shame to end that way).
Supongo que drogado te debe generar algo Velvet underground. Tal vez algún día lo descubra.
i liked like 50% of this. Just kinda loud honestly
I used to listen to this
Didn't add any but its quite nice
way too artsy for me
Never was a Lou Reed man. I'm still not. I don't really see the influential-ness of this album. It's not unlistenable, but I'm not seeing some sort of amazing epiphany of musical genius that was spewed about on this one.
This album is a really good example of the small-frame snapshot you get of the history and context of artists from a single work. Warhol had taken the velvet underground into his fold, married their sound with one of his models, and through them found a new way for his factory to get art into the mass market. Unfortunately the wider picture is completely lost when the only exposure to that world is this flop of an album, with its model who can't sing, and complete atonal dissonance.
I recently listened to an interview with a very serious music journalist who was trying to put forward the case that the velvet underground were better than the Beatles. Having had 2 albums previously, i could not agree but listened anyway. He (obviously its a he) said this album was that magnus opus and was the best album ever made. I just cant see it. Yes there are songs that are well written, but the drop off between hits and filler is sharp. Lou's voice is still poor and the addition of Nico adds nothing except she was pretty and the lads look like homunculae.
I have to give this album its due respect for inspiring so much other amazing work that I love. It also has moments where I hear the vision. As a whole I don’t really like it. Heroin is a highlight for sure.
Meh
This album was different, I wasn’t really a fan.
Meh
Trance-like full layers of sound with a variety of instruments, vocal colors, driving rhythms. Psychedelic. Not for me though, except maybe Sunday morning.
Love the album cover. This may be influential for a lot of genres and whatnot, but if I am to rate the actual music presented here (and that's what I want to do), then... 😮💨 In my ears it ranges from okay (like the opener "Sunday Morning" or "There She Goes Again") to boring (hello, "All Tomorrow's Parties") to annoying as hell (looking at you, "Black Angel's Death Song" and "European Son"). Both vocalists do a bad job and the guitar solos are embarrassing. All in all, I'm afraid there's barely anything that makes me want to revisit this influential classic. 2/5 below average
