Chill
Why have I not heard of them before! Plenty of similarities to other EDM acts from the time (e.g. Faithless, Massive Attack, Chemical Brothers, FBS), but this still caught me - adding to my playlists 4/5
I’ve been aware of this record for most of my life, but I’m only just realising now that I’ve never actually heard any of it before. I assumed it was straight down the middle house music, but this has a lot of interesting layers and moods within it, and a real ebb and flow between the tracks. This is exactly my kind of jam as it turns out. I like the overall mood of the thing, but more importantly it still kicks some arse when the beat kicks in.
absolutely loved it. old school EDM never fails to deliver. New artist unlocked!
This was a lot of fun. I wish I had known of this when it came out. It’s very reminiscent of Massive Attack.
interesting album, enjoyed it quite a bit, good electronic sounds.
Some really good moments
Favourite tracks: melt; open up; release the pressure; black fruit
J’aime pas quand il chante, mais j’ai bien aimé ça en musique d’ambiance
Super fun electronic album. I am definitely adding it to my rotation for this sort of music.
One or two tracks detract from a potential 5 star rating but overall it's a banger
### In-Depth Review of "Leftism" by Leftfield **Album Overview:** "Leftism," released in 1995, is the debut studio album by British electronic duo Leftfield, consisting of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley. It is widely regarded as one of the seminal works in electronic music, blending elements of house, dub, reggae, and techno with intricate production techniques and diverse vocal contributions. #### Lyrics **Pros:** 1. **Variety and Depth:** The album features a range of lyrical styles, from the political and socially conscious to the personal and introspective. This diversity adds layers to the listening experience. 2. **Memorable Phrases:** Tracks like "Open Up" contain iconic lines such as “Burn Hollywood burn,” delivered by John Lydon, which became a rallying cry against the superficiality of the entertainment industry. 3. **Collaborative Strengths:** The contributions from vocalists such as Toni Halliday on "Original" and Djum Djum on "Afro-Left" bring distinct flavors and help convey different themes effectively. **Cons:** 1. **Fragmented Lyrical Cohesion:** While the variety is a strength, it also means that the album lacks a unified lyrical theme, making it feel disjointed at times. 2. **Secondary Role of Lyrics:** In many tracks, the lyrics are secondary to the music, functioning more as an additional instrument rather than a central element. This can make the lyrical content feel less impactful. #### Music **Pros:** 1. **Genre Fusion:** "Leftism" excels in blending various genres seamlessly. The infusion of house, dub, techno, and reggae creates a unique soundscape that was pioneering at the time. 2. **Innovative Rhythms and Melodies:** Tracks like "Song of Life" and "Release the Pressure" showcase complex rhythms and infectious melodies that captivate listeners and encourage repeat plays. 3. **Dynamic Range:** The album’s ability to shift from high-energy tracks to more subdued, atmospheric pieces keeps the listening experience engaging and varied. **Cons:** 1. **Overwhelming for Casual Listeners:** The intricate layers and genre-blending might be overwhelming for those not accustomed to electronic music, potentially alienating casual listeners. 2. **Inconsistent Pacing:** Some listeners might find the transitions between high-energy and slower tracks jarring, affecting the album’s flow. #### Production **Pros:** 1. **High Production Standards:** "Leftism" is renowned for its pristine production quality. The meticulous attention to detail in the mixing and mastering processes ensures a crisp, clear sound that stands the test of time. 2. **Innovative Use of Technology:** The duo’s innovative use of sampling, drum machines, and synthesizers set new standards in electronic music production. The album’s production techniques influenced many subsequent artists and producers. 3. **Spatial Soundscapes:** Tracks like "Melt" and "Space Shanty" create expansive, immersive soundscapes that draw listeners into a different world, showcasing the duo's mastery in creating depth and atmosphere. **Cons:** 1. **Complexity Over Accessibility:** The intricate production may be too complex for some listeners, making the music feel less accessible to a broader audience. 2. **Occasional Overproduction:** In some tracks, the dense layers of sound can feel cluttered, potentially overwhelming the core elements of the music. #### Themes **Pros:** 1. **Diverse Themes:** The album covers a wide range of themes, from political and social commentary in "Open Up" and "Inspection (Check One)" to personal and emotional introspection in "Original." 2. **Cultural Fusion:** The incorporation of diverse cultural elements, such as the African rhythms in "Afro-Left," broadens the thematic scope and adds a global perspective. 3. **Exploration of Identity:** Themes of identity and belonging are subtly woven throughout the album, providing a deeper layer of meaning for attentive listeners. **Cons:** 1. **Lack of Thematic Cohesion:** The diversity in themes, while a strength, also results in a lack of a cohesive narrative thread, which can make the album feel scattered. 2. **Subtlety in Themes:** Some thematic elements are subtle and may not be immediately apparent to all listeners, requiring multiple listens to fully appreciate. #### Influence **Pros:** 1. **Pioneering Work:** "Leftism" is considered a groundbreaking album in the electronic music scene, influencing numerous artists and producers in the years following its release. 2. **Genre-Defining:** The album helped define and popularize the electronic genre, particularly in the UK, and paved the way for future developments in electronic and dance music. 3. **Cultural Impact:** The album’s innovative approach to music production and genre fusion has left a lasting impact on the music industry, inspiring a new generation of musicians. **Cons:** 1. **Overshadowed by Successors:** While influential, the album’s impact is sometimes overshadowed by later works from other artists who took its innovations further. 2. **Niche Appeal:** The specific blend of genres and the album’s experimental nature mean that its influence is more pronounced within certain music circles, limiting its broader cultural impact. ### Track-by-Track Analysis 1. **"Release the Pressure"** - **Lyrics:** Socially conscious, focusing on themes of liberation and resistance. - **Music:** Combines dub and reggae influences with electronic beats. - **Production:** Crisp production with deep bass lines and layered rhythms. 2. **"Afro-Left"** - **Lyrics:** Afro-centric themes, performed by Djum Djum. - **Music:** African rhythms blended with techno elements. - **Production:** Complex layering and intricate percussion. 3. **"Melt"** - **Lyrics:** Instrumental track. - **Music:** Atmospheric and ambient, showcasing a more subdued side of Leftfield. - **Production:** Emphasis on creating an expansive, immersive soundscape. 4. **"Song of Life"** - **Lyrics:** Minimal lyrics, focusing more on the music. - **Music:** Uplifting melodies and infectious rhythms. - **Production:** High energy with a polished, vibrant sound. 5. **"Original"** - **Lyrics:** Personal and introspective, performed by Toni Halliday. - **Music:** Melodic and emotional, with a strong vocal presence. - **Production:** Balanced and refined, highlighting the vocals. 6. **"Black Flute"** - **Lyrics:** Instrumental track. - **Music:** Darker, more experimental sounds. - **Production:** Intricate and atmospheric, with a focus on mood and texture. 7. **"Space Shanty"** - **Lyrics:** Minimal, repetitive phrases. - **Music:** Psychedelic and spacey, with a driving beat. - **Production:** Rich in texture, with a layered, expansive feel. 8. **"Inspection (Check One)"** - **Lyrics:** Political and social commentary. - **Music:** Combines reggae and techno elements. - **Production:** Sharp and clear, with a strong rhythmic foundation. 9. **"Storm 3000"** - **Lyrics:** Instrumental track. - **Music:** Intense and energetic, with a driving techno beat. - **Production:** High energy, with precise and powerful production. 10. **"Open Up"** - **Lyrics:** Iconic and politically charged, performed by John Lydon. - **Music:** Aggressive and intense, with a punk influence. - **Production:** Powerful and confrontational, with a raw edge. 11. **"21st Century Poem"** - **Lyrics:** Reflective and futuristic. - **Music:** Ambient and experimental, closing the album on a contemplative note. - **Production:** Subtle and layered, creating a reflective atmosphere. ### Pros and Cons Summary **Pros:** 1. **Innovative Genre Fusion:** Seamless blending of house, dub, reggae, and techno. 2. **High Production Quality:** Meticulous attention to detail in mixing and mastering. 3. **Diverse Themes and Styles:** Wide range of lyrical and musical styles. **Cons:** 1. **Lack of Cohesion:** The diversity in styles and themes can feel scattered. 2. **Complexity Over Accessibility:** Dense production and genre-blending may be overwhelming for some listeners. 3. **Secondary Role of Lyrics:** Lyrics often take a backseat to the music, reducing their impact. ### Conclusion "Leftism" by Leftfield is a landmark album in the electronic music genre, celebrated for its innovative production, genre-blending, and diverse themes. While its complexity and lack of cohesion may present challenges, its influence and high production standards make it a timeless piece of music history.
Enjoyable. This list has been my main exposure to English electronic artists of the 90s who primarily put out singles but then eventually thought, why not do a full length? This is probably the most successful one of these so far in terms of structure and scope.
Yep, sounds like 90's electronica. But I do love some 90's electronica. I don't know that this fully wowed me and I found it hard to dance to maybe because the beat was often subtle, but I generally enjoyed this and it was not something that I'd ever heard of. For some reason the cover seems familiar. Maybe I've seen it on vinyl at a record shop and had no idea what it was. Glad to have checked it out.
-first time getting an electronic album on this website -I enjoy this one -it's cohesive -its a BIIIT longer than I would take it, but I will go with it -I also like the album cover -it aged quite well -favorite songs: Afro Left, Song Of Life (<3), Original, Space Shanty, Open Up (<3) -least favorite song: 21st Century Poem
Somehow both retro and futuristic at the same time
Really enjoyed this one, it’s right up my alley.
1st couple tracks were great
Progressive house with subtle hints of Faith No More-esque samples. Very vibrant.
Great
I don’t typically listen to this type of music but this one really is an awesome album!
Leftism is the debut album from the English duo Leftfield. Their work has been described as progressive house, but that label doesn't seem to be broad enough to describe what Leftfield is doing. It is very danceable house music, but they have expanded the range of the melodies, samples, and supporting elements that can be included in danceable house music. This is a great album of very danceable tracks, and a timelessness that comes from inventive electronic music.
I already loved "Original* but didn't knew the album. I love esp. the 2nd half.
Excellent. Best tracks are still Release The Pressure and Song Of Life 4/5
Never heard of this band, but I actually like them!!
Song of life absolute banger Overall pretty good some not as good as others 1995 electronic
This is the soundtrack the next time I play Clank! In Space!
Enveloping
Paar gute Banger dabei. 3-4
Good but I didn't give it a thouough listen. Will give it another shot.
Fun electronic music with lots of cool influences. Very much so the kind of music I like to listen to while focusing on work.
First time listen and I love it. So many good tracks, doesn’t get repetitive, Lots of changes to the sound as you go through the album. Favourite song: The Pressure and Inspection Least favourite: All good Album artwork: No idea what that is suppossed to be.
dark atmospheric
I rather like this album. I don't think I had ever heard of it before, but I really dig it. The more I listen to it, the more I like it! Solid.
A very good electronic record - albeit a bit long. Yes fine there is a lot of hippie cliche from the era this album was released- but to be honest it’s quite in earnest and hopeful - so it’s forgiveable.
Genuinely surprised by this one. I was able to put it on in the background and it never demanded too much of my attention. Less dance album and more ambient, but that's not a bad thing in this case.
I felt swaddled in the bosom of this droney electronica ❤️
1995, Progressive house Debut album by Leftism (England) Singles: --------------------------- Song of Life (#59 UK, #1 Dance) Open Up (#13 UK, #1 Dance) Original (#18 UK, #11 Dance) Afro-Left (#22 UK ) Release the Pressure (#13 UK) Standouts: Release the Pressure, Afro-Left, Song of Life, Open Up, Others: Melt, Original, Black Flute, 4/5
Initially liked the 2nd half more than the first half. Listened to the first two songs in the car and liked them on the second play more I think. There's also a Leftism 22 album with remixes that I want to listen to. overall this was fun to learn about.
now THIS is my type of house music
Techno pop dance music with heavy percussion. I’m surprised I liked it generally but can’t listen to a whole album of it.
creepy fish eye camera cover but music is like a new age bob marley so far which is nice. Actually a good mix of pop, new age, electronic, wordless etc. Almost a 5! but today is a sad day personally.
What a nice surprise
This is art class music. Probably nothing that I would listen to intently, but great background music for a creative activity
Is this... EDM? Right off the bat, I have no idea what to make of this. Good as background music, but I have a hard time with EDM as something I'd listen to with the same intentional ear that I do other stuff. I'm not against it, though. The more I listen, the more I think of 90s EDM in general, I'm getting Darude - Sandstorm vibes, which apparently came out well after this album. I really dig the track "Original". Space Shanty is also incredible. Okay, this album grew on me a lot as it went on.
Enjoying this a lot. The Wikipedia articles may be my favorite feature of this site. They inevitably make me appreciate an album even more. 4
An album that was always on my radar but that I never actually bought or heard all of; now I have and it's great!
Goes hard. It's very rare to find IDM where the tracks are not carried by a couple hits. It's mostly house, followed by techno and ambient, then jungle in tracks like "Storm 3000". The first half is very strong. Only part I didn't like was the first half of "Afroleaf", but it picked up. "Melt" is an ambient track almost as good as Aphex Twin. "Song of Life" and "Original" are my favorite tracks on the record. The 2nd half is still great, all the tracks stand out and feel complete yet are tied together. "Open Up" is the only song on the second half that can compete, and that's mostly because of Johnny Rotten's vocals, but I also really love that second half finish. The record should have ended there to be honest, or at least cut "21st Century Poem" by half cause it's not very entertaining even as an ambient piece.
Not the kind of album you put on after a long stressful day with a smooth barrel-aged imperial stout in hand. Luckily for me, I had to code for a few hours at work, and this was the near perfect record for that.
Progressive house.
great
You know what? That didn't suck. And, to be clear, I fully expected it to suck. House is not my jam. But the energy here is good and the music is more nuanced and layered than most house joints. Don't get me wrong, an hour of house is just... well, that's a lot of work to get through no matter how "good" it is. But, if you gotta listen to an hour of house, this isn't a bad way to spend the time. In fact, it gained a star for me simply because, even though I found the repetition somewhat numbing, it kept catching my attention and drawing me back in. There's a lot going on here and it's definitely worthy of inclusion on the list. That was VERY close to a surprise 5-star album for me. If I hadn't been so worn out by the constant boots-and-cats, it would have been. Cut 15 minutes off of this, though? Full marks easy. Gonna need to revisit this one later.
Having only recently come to electronica, I had no clue what an influential album this was. I’d never heard of Leftfield. But reading up on them and how this album was made, and jamming out to it four times over the course of the last 20 hours, I gotta say I really get it. It’s wild! Earl Sixteen, Toni Halliday, Johnny Rotten, Danny Red. Very listenable. Can’t go five stars just because I got a little lost in the back third every time I listened to it and I don’t know that I’ll keep listening to it multiple times a day, but job well done lads.
Didn’t expect this kind album here, but I definitely like it
I have a bit of a problem with dance music/electronica particularly pure instrumental but this is a decent album. One I owned so I know reasonably well. So it cuts a bit above the crowd.
At first it sounded like another one of those background music albums, but it actually slaps. Hard.
One of the heroes of electronic music, grooving melodies, funky toe-tapping rhythms, and timely vocal interludes.
Estoy casi seguro que nunca lo había escuchado pero me dio mucha nostalgia. Chingón.
Good Electronic music, especially for the 90's. Serious rave/German/Dutch vibes in later tracks. It's fun, but I wouldn't own it on vinyl. I'd want a constant play through without having to flip the record.
Kinda cool livin life in the matrix
Fantastic and stands up well despite being almost 30 years old
do i buy country life butter.... open up is a pretty epic track but it's a stand alone belter on this album the rest is nicely produced but fairly forgettable. Rhythm and stealth is a far superior album. that said it's better than 70% of the shite on this list.
Wow, amazing early stuff!
I went forcthe originsl version not the remastered as the remastered one was double the length. Although I recognised the album cover I don't think I'd heard of the band before so I was expecting to hate it. I loved it!
As we get ointo the last couple of months of our 1001 journey I wonder how long it will be until we start to react to another electronic album the way one of our group members reacts to another acoustic folk album. This electronic album didn't cause that reaction with me anyway. I quite liked it especially the way African / Jamaican sounds were fused in. Johnny Rotten was also a nice touch
Brilliant dancefloor that (unlike many others) works well at home. Inventive and excellent production.
A very good collection of tunes. Chilled at times, but also energetic sometimes.
What the heck? I guess I like house music. I came here to be surprised by music and that's what this album did. Big fan of the African style rhythm mixed into the dance-y house music. Solid 4.1
If I were to rate this as house music, it rates very highly. It's far less tedious than most, incorporates some other interesting elements, and made for a background that caused the people in the room to start moving unconsciously to the beat. But being house music, it is still a bit tedious.
I was unfamiliar with this one. Glad I discovered it. Great '90s electronica sound.
So close to 5 stars. Just such an excellent Dance album with so much variety.
really great, would be great to smoke to
House progresivo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Progressive house.
Th is was unexpected and enjoyable
This is a really solid progressive house record. The pace starts slow and then picks up as it goes on. Very listenable beats and the sampling fits in well. Standout is "Afro Left."
Up there with the best house albums Iv heard loved the mix on music on this added to my rotation
Progressive house.
This is one of those albums that stops my progress on daily albums for a week or so because I keep putting this on. The first 5 tracks are awesome.
Going into this, I was expecting it to be like all of the other 90's electronic albums on here: bloated, boring, and making me wish it was over. Well, this one was still bloated lol. But unlike the others, it was fun and interesting at almost every turn. I liked it more and more with every song. This is the album all those others wished they were.
this is probably too high but i like the way the bass goes womp womp womp and the matrix soundtrack hasnt happened yet and no one is smacking any b***** up and that it aint no trance and that these dudes must have liked daft punk and kraftwerk probably and that it seems like the 90s cause womp womp laser beam.
frekar gott bara. heimstónlistar söngur. ber upptökutíma sínum vitni en er skemmtileg. hlusta sjálfsagt á þetta aftur samt.
A really good listen. I was too young to get it at the time. I didn’t think electronica was for me. Certainly not the case now. This is an amazing piece of work.
Better than a lot of the other electronic albums on this list. Doesn't get too repetitive and songs don't overstay their welcome. I think Original is my favorite track, although I was enjoying it more before the vocals kicked in.
Had no clue what this album was going to be like, wasn't expecting eletronic. Melt is great - reminds me of playing Terraria. A lot of these songs are good, although a bit repetitive. These songs would make very memorable songs for games on AddictingGames.com There is a lot of influence from this album I can hear in some electronic songs today; especially in Inspection (Check One). Overall I like the sounds of this album a lot, it is a bit repetitive like most early electronic. I think that if you compare it to most early electronic, though, it has a lot of fresh sounds. This is a 3.5 stars at face value, but I'm giving it a nudge because it feels so original.
Had no clue what to expect going into this one wowza. Blew my mind this came out in 95. Reminds me a bit of a more electronic Thievery Corporation. World musack with some crazy good guest appearances (Johnny Rotten????). Some absolute jams and I have no doubt some early-mid Daft Punk was getting stuff from them.
Raw. Eclectic. A spiritual journey ahead of its time. Bonus star for sampling the Beastie Boys
Very chill inducing electronic tracks. Rarely repetitive long enough to become stale. I like the addition of mellow vocals on many of thr tracks.
Super cool 90s electronica. When I was listening to it I kept thinking it would have gone well in the Hackers soundtrack. After I looked at the track listing for Hackers and saw them prominently featured.
Pretty decent electronic. Definitely sounds like the 90s now though. 3.5/5
Interesting re-hearing it after plenty of years, it didn’t disappoint.
traditionally not a huge fan of electronica but this one had me engaged and entranced.
Never heard of this album prior to this challenge, so once again, props to this challenge. Familiar with this era of electronic music (Bjork, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Tricky, Underworld, etc.) so this does sound familiar in context, sound, and vibes. My favorite tracks are "Release the Pressure," "Melt," and “Open Up.” With that being said, I don't necessarily think this is as strong of an album or one meant for listening to as a whole as contemporary albums like "Music for the Jilted Generation" or "Maxinquaye." So it’s not a 5 star album, but there’s enough bangers on here to qualify it as a healthy and hearty…
I had never heard of this band or album before today and techno/house is not usually my genre.... That being said I really enjoyed this and would listen to it again in the right circumstances. 4/5.
House music that works from home with an album that doesn’t just slog on. Solid stuff.
Never heard, idkh this one got past me? John Lydon track is a standout! 8!
Really enjoyed. Enigma, Ray of Light, dub Electronica. Gives me energy
The album cover makes me feel shivers down my spine. Am I supposed to be watching something or become the focus of something as I'm being swallowed whole by a set of teeth? Is that a camera or a portal into something otherworldly soundtracked by this Leftfield tapestry marauding my ears? Too many questions that don't have many answers but, quite frankly, this album is really good. Favorites: Release the Pressure, Afro Left, Melt, Song of Life, Original, Black Flute, Space Shanty, Open Up.
Love me some house music. This album has a really great flow from beginning to end and some great guest features. Pretty sick.
I was super worried this would be annoying as fuck like a lot of electronica music can be, but this was delightful. Each song has a unique identity that had me wondering what they were going to throw into the mix next. Also not to get political but speaking as a lefty, I experience leftism every day and I'm glad it's getting recognition. I mean the scissors, bro. and the notebooks, too! Whiteboards? Literally unusable. Thank you Leftfield. I finally feel seen. Jokes aside, this was surprisingly listenable and varied. I can absolutely seeing myself listening again. 4
Thievery Corporation upside. A pretty good time! Happy new year
En del interessant... Fire stjerner?
never heard of this band before but you could have told me this album came out in 2022 and I would believe you. I really enjoyed it and as an electronic music listener I'll be on the lookout for more Leftfield music
Overall I thought it was pretty cool. Songs incorporate a lot of different sounds or vocal samples that keep them fresh, and just in general they are pretty interesting h instrumentals. 7/10
Nice
Eh. It sounded like every 90s house record so I don't know why they thought they were left-field. Also, as someone else pointed out, it felt like most of the album tested on the brilliance of a couple songs, which is a shame, because the first song in particular has me ready for something fantastic. I will admit it had the ideal sound for a house album, however. Feels pretty great with headphones. A decent record.
Fun techno, EDM album
It took a bit for me to get into this album, but I really enjoyed it once I did. The music is best categorized as progressive house but frequently incorporates techno elements such as the four on the floor bass drum. There are some dub influences in here as well. The result is a great dance music that has a great sense of tension building and knowing when to drop the beat.
House progresivo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
I had no idea how well I would know this album. I’m not an aficionado when it comes to dance music so it must have just been via osmosis over the years. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected, in particular the slower tracks, but overall it was great. Will listen again for definite.
Alright, it's a bop. I was nodding my head.
Decent tunes, enjoyed the vocals too!
This grew on me. Some bangers on here even though it’s not my favourite genre.
Coole sounds. Zeer tof voor op de achtergrond. Begin van storm 3000 laat me wat aan een oscar and the wolf liedje denken.
Well, this is a pleasant surprise.
Fun
Cool
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Afro left, Space shanty
A pleasant surprise. The first few tracks I wasn't super into, but once the album really kicked in, I was totally into it. Very retro-futuristic. Not sure how much I enjoyed John Lydon's performance, but enjoyed the other performance. Favorite tracks: "Melt", "Song of Life", "Space Shanty", "Storm 3000"
This is really good
Great album of"Progressive House" (Prog House). Some great tracks I particularly liked Earl Daileys Vocals on "Release The Pressure" and Ol' Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) on "Open Up". Better side of Dance music here with some really creative tunes. Rightfully on the list in my opinion.
Bang chillin
Helt nätt
nice house album, the album starts slow with some tribal african influences then it picks up midway to become a more club like house album
Better than I though it would be and there were more singles that I knew than I though I would Certainly a trip down memory lane
Love it raggamuffin
Ibiza cream classic, this was pretty great and a change from what I've been getting recently
I enjoyed it more than most EDM and it made a great station.
Wow…
House isn't my favourite genre of EDM, but Leftism has sat amongst my other CDs since the early 2000s. A real yardstick for others to be measured. At 2 hours it is an epic to boot.
An album I wouldnt have given the time of day without this list. Glad I got to experience it
i was totally stoked to see this come up - i had this on cd way back in the day when cds were a thing, and while i've always liked it, i hadn't actually heard it in a buncha years. always nice to visit an old friend
Extremely influential and critically acclaimed album… easy to see why. I’m very familiar with this record and it’s aged brilliantly!
really laid back, cool record. One to listen to again
Yep, give me more!
A great but gentle slab of sound. It has a shape, isn't exactly ambient, even in the house way. But it works well as a soundtrack for life, biorhythmic.
Good grooves! Helps me focus on my work. Occasionally brought me to dancing without even trying.
pretty good beats
Solid House album, more upbeat but not as good as Dummy by portishead IMO. Really with I could give 3.5. 4
What a gorgeous album. Some of the best electronic music I've ever heard. The dance tracks are intoxicating and the slower tracks sumptuous and gorgeous. My only complaint...it's 15 minutes too long. 4.5 🌟
J’aime ce genre de musique pour travailler et cet album ne fait pasexception. Quoi que beaucoup techno, koins de symth. 4
Cool mix of house, techno, dub and triphop. Maybe too much techno for me to love though.
Dope. A few good songs for a party playlist
Quite fun electro, definitely enjoyed it.
7
pretty good 4/5
Erfrischender Genre-Wechsel, hätte nicht erwartet, dass mir das soo gut gefällt, bringt mich zum Tanzen.
Rather jolly!
After being real cool on much of the electronica served up to me so far, this one actually clicked. Seems like good study/coding music, but according to the reviews I'd be best off tripping face in a London warehouse.
Honestly I'm a sucker for anything edm
Not a top level belter for me but a belter nevertheless
This is ace.
a Groove Salad mainstay. good ambient beats.
8/10. Giving this the benefit of the doubt as I didn't get a very clear listen due to having my windows rolled down on the freeway to combat the lack of AC. What I could hear of it sounded pretty cool though, and I expect I'll come back to this later.
Voll verdiente 3,8!
Muy zapatilla pero mola
Nice rave. Brought me right back to club days.
Yeah, another good 90s 'classic' techno album. Pretty decent genre overall
Tried like hell to find the theme from "Shallow Grave" only to discover it not on this record. Still, I believe it was this album that led me to enjoy Aphex Twin and Autechre as opposed to radio stuff like Fatboy Slim.
cool album. never heard it before
I really liked this one! Electronic albums aren't always my thing, but I appreciated the musical influences here, specifically the rock sounds throughout the record. I think I was initially thrown off a bit by the vocals, but it grew on me.
I had fun
Aivan hyvää jyystöä! Joku toinen tilanne olis sopinu levylle ehkä vähä paremmin kuin yksin kotona aamupalan syöminen XD
2 tuntia?! Uuh - mut täähän potkii 🕺🏼 Luulen et Play oli paikallaan pehmentämää mua tällaseen house seikkailuun, mut täshän oli hiton kovii raitoja! 🤩 Keskivaiheessa oll jotain vähän puuduttavaa, mut kokonaisuutena ihan tosi hilkulla nelosta!!
Kannen, bändin nimen tai albumin nimen perusteella en kyllä osannu olettaa mitään tällasta. Olipahan matka. Hyviäkin biisejä mut myös täytematskua. Afro Left kovimmasta päästä. Paikoin ihan älytöntä paatosta: "Burn Hollywood (?) burn" :D
I would imagin thia muadic in john wick
Album was a fun listen. It's a type of music I actually do enjoy having on in the background quite a bit. Probably 3.5? Very surprised it came out in 1995, definitely feels ahead of its time. But I don't think I can give it a 4 or above just because it wasn't anything that blew me away or that I'd listen to actively.
Uncertain start but grew on us. Has a groove to it.
Reggae, dub, house, big beat, + afrocentrism to top it all off, so what's not to like, but then again, what's there to love? Probably a whole lot - if you were there & possessed the password - but for this generous listener, tho not a matter of cold admiration, the record isn't a breathtaking affair, i.e., there's no there there &, while we're at it, no here here. What I mean: it's impressively impressive, & not much else. That's too bad - I'd love for an album called Leftism to exceed the bill - but alas, it only fits it (sometimes). A good find then, just not good for long.
no bardzo dziwne wolalabym juz tego nie sluchac raczej chociaz wsm ledwo sie na tym skupialam
I bought this at the time but didn't listen to it anywhere as much as its successor, Rhythm & Stealth. It's dark and menacing but for me doesn't quite pick up the pace or drop a memorable bassline or hook often enough.
Fínasta sýra. Frekar töff beat og 90's stíllinn sem maður elskar.
Mjög kúl og flottir taktar.
calling this ps2 racing music like thats a bad thing bruh that being said it sorta unremarkable house. good but its doing a little too much for taste
I’ve said something similar before, but this sounds like background music in a racing video game whose graphics were good for its time but have aged poorly.
It's always hard to rate electronic music on this list, because only the outdated ones are represented. I wish there were more Electronica...
Fun, weird house music. Enjoyable but it did not need to be that long
This list must be weird if you aren’t British, there’s things on here which are not only very British but also very 90’s. I’m British and in my 50’s so this album is very much fertile territory for me. I remember it being played in pubs and clubs and eventually it found its way on to TV and adverts. It’s the kind of visceral dance music that’s at home in a club, far more than on headphones. Pounding beats, reggae hooks and repetitive vocals. Not the soundtrack for putting your feet up but not an unpleasant experience either
Is this what everyone is listening to in that huge dance/orgy scene in the second Matrix? On paper, a techno album with all these dub influences should be great. And for some stretches, it’s pretty cool. The main issue, though, is that it’s not that interesting as a listening experience. It’s probably cool in the club, on drugs. I dunno. I could put it on in the background of something I guess. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either.
I was fully prepared to hate this record as electronic music is not my jam. But this was pretty good. The beats were interesting and the vocals were strong.
I wish I'd had both the intel and the courage to go to raves in Boston at the time. Or that I'd had the courage to go to England for junior year abroad, as did my courageous cosmopolitan friend Daniel. But nope. So I did all my exstasy, mushrooms and LSD with two little cabals of close friends. Definitely safer than the raves were. Still permanently mind-altering. Since that period I've had a long-term relationship with techno, house and in general club music rooted back then. I still love them. I use techno to blast my unfocused ADHD worrying to splinters, and then get a whole lot of admin tasks done. Some day I'll make it to a rave.
인트로 진짜 좋은데 목소리 너무 안 어울려서 놀람
Interesting.
What is it with techno artists and long songs/albums? Didn't really need 7+ minute songs and 2 discs but I will say that this record is pretty dope for a 1995 release. The 1st half of disc 1 is too repetitive and dragged but once we get to "Space Shanty," it picks it up. The beats get more versatile and I like the Rasta/Afro vocal additions. Disc 2 could be a separate album...has a more chill vibe. With my decent electronica exposure over the years, I'm surprised I never heard of this duo. I can sense the influence this may have had on future acts. 2.8 stars for coming out of Leftfield.
Leftism is an album I have been recommended by a plethora of Electronic music fans and now that I have finally heard it I can definitely understand the hype, but I don't feel as strongly about it all thanks to a very underwhelming ending. This project is not your typical Electronic album and instead takes on the task of trying to sound like a meticulously planned out Progressive House set. For the most part is succeeds in that concept and sounds really wonderful as the tracks all flow into one another and the hype remains constant for the majority of the album. It is an intense yet another very spacious project that doesn't need your fullest attention as the Ambient elements are able to suffice my listening, but if you do focus shows off a lot of really sweet transitions. As much as I would love to praise this album further I do have to mention the crashing and burning this album does with the final borderline Noise track with 21st Century Poem. I have no idea what Leftfield was thinking here but that was not the way to end this project and really ruined everything this project had going for it. As much as I tried to enjoy it, even after listening to this album in full twice, I still couldn't get over how much of a kick to the balls it is for the listener. Really bummed to be hating on what would have easily been a great Electronic album, but I gotta keep it real and admit the truth about this album. Oh well, onto the next one I guess...
not like. the worst thing on this list. so that's a plus Would I listen again? yeah maybe Deserves to be on this list? feels like it 3.4
A fun and eclectic suprise, a wild mix of what felt like a new kind of old school electronic afro music it was a good time
Another house music album - this has be the 8-10th out of 350 albums so far…more than are needed. Pro: this was more varied and therefore less annoying than others. Con: this album was over 2 hours. 3/5
Nostalgia took me through it:)
Enjoyed this far more than I was expecting to. I imagine that with the right level of pharmaceutical enhancement this would go like a frog in a sock. But even with nothing more in the system than a menthol cough drop it's still really engaging. Not as good as, say, Massive Attack, but definitely a step up from Goldie. Just wants to get you on your feet and dancing and none the worse for that.
"afro left" is a banger.
It was an okay album. It wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't necessarily bad. It was very electronic and techno-sounding. Not my cup of tea.
This is fun to listen to in the background while working. But not something very interesting in my opinion
The production is very crisp. There’s a cool range of sounds. Some of it is quite adjacent to Portishead, but it never manages to capture that same magic. The main issue I have is with how long this is. The more I listen to this list, the more I feel convinced that CDs ruined albums by allowing too much bloat.
Haven't heard of them. The cover art is ugly so I assumed the music might not be too good. Well I forgot that I quite enjoy 90s electronic music lol. It was good 3/5
Not bad for an electronic/house album. Doesn't drone on too much and has some variety. 3/5
Afro tecno house.....algunas estan bien. Otras son una mierda
It's fun, but it's basically a club music, for which I am not really into
It was great bacground muaic. I had to study while listening and it didn't bother me at all. But I probably couldn't listen to the whole album while not occupying my brain by other activities
Music that helps you think. I like it.
Та самая музыка которую слушал ваш знакомый "просветлённый" друг-укурыш в растянутом свитере с растрепанными волосами. 2 часа богом забытой британской электронной музыки, не, я все понимаю, но зачем это слушать я не совсем понимаю. Типа... i dont know man...
I’m not really a house music guy but I appreciate what this is. My favorite track is probably “Original”. Sitting down for the full 2 hour experience (I listened to the 2000 re-release) is a bit grueling- a lot of songs overstay their welcome but because it’s dance music that’s more of an issue of context than of quality. This isn’t for me but I wouldn’t object to hearing tracks off this album at a party or something.
Woo prog house
Lengthier electronic house- like tracks that also pull from dub and tribally music as much as acidy dance music. I found aspects of this pleasing, just a consistent thumping with strong beats and squelchy sounds. Still, I’d need a bit more time to dissect this to figure out how into it I really am, but had a decent first listening experience.
Great vibey album. Not generally a dance music fan but loved how different each track was without losing the theme.
Electronica / House music. Early impression was poor but I became more interested as the album progressed. Reminiscent of Ambassadors Of Funk, The Prodigy, etc throughout. I can understand how this album could have made a big impression at the time. Generally the album was good and held my attention. Top tracks: Song Of Life, Storm 3000.
It was pretty good. The Wiki makes some comparisons to Dummy by Portishead. I don't think this album was as good, but not bad by any means.
Unfortunately the genre isn't for me but I can appreciate it for what it is. Decent music to work to but I wouldn't listen to this again.
This one surpassed my expectations, especially given that it is ANOTHER English electronic album on this list
Don't know what to think about it
Very dance oriented and rhythmic which I like. One of the more enjoyable electronica albums that I’ve listened to
3.5
Ambient. Nice enough, bit slow in places.
This was fine, just not my preferred genre so I don't have much to say about it.
Afro left is causing pants shaking I declare. Liking it a lot more than I expected. Weakness for dancy things.
Quite a pleasant listen, I am enjoying the progressive house sequences, but not so much that I want to hear it again. The John Lydon track was good
Not terrible as far as electronic albums go. But not my type of thing.
Hørt på spasertur på søndag. Litt varierende nivå.
Long but pretty fun. Makes you wanna dance.
Not a great cover art for this one but I actually enjoyed it more than I expected to. Feels primitive to the electronic sounds we have today but not in a bad way.
Little slow to start off, the songs take a while to get into But what good edm doesn’t
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to listen more than once the whole way through (for it being two hours long!!!!), but I loved this. The progressions, mix of rhythms languages moods. Disc 1 was stronger than disc 2 in my opinion
I enjoyed this debut album from Leftfield. I thought it was a decent electronic album, but felt repetitive and lack luster at times. Overall, I liked this album but there are other electronic artists I would listen to over this.
Not bad. Bit trendy and in love with itself. But there are much worse on this list.
Not sure why but I was expecting more of a sparse Orbital-style electronica, so the vocals on this were quite a surprise. Pretty good but just not something I’d listen to that often.
Burning down the Hollywood
Fav: Open up
It's techno so it's kinda boring, but they did create a lot of trippy and spacey type of beats that I actually thought were pretty unique
I'm not much of a techno/electronica guy, but I appreciate that all these songs were distinct. Sometimes techno albums bore the hell out of me as they're repetitive by nature and all the songs end up blending together. This one at least has some variety (even if it's not my cup of tea). I was ready for it to be over, but it worked fine as background music. 3.2
One of the finest albums ever made
Weird, disturbing and mesmerising ! The three feelings I got while playing this. Felt like psytrance got it's inspiration from them. Might have been something to hear that for the first time back in the days 3.5
Will need to come back to it from time to time to build some familiarity. Did enjoy it while working
I usually hate this stuff, but this wasn't bad.
Spacey, dense, trippy electronic with a nicely varied sonic palette. Some chilled out stuff, some high intensity stuff, some dancey stuff, some bangers, lots of cool sounds, classic diva vocal samples, dank dub atmospheres, house beats, and a dark moody ambience to it all. It's so funny how this genre is great for both drug fueled rave partying and plowing through boring office work.
This album grew on me. It's kind of edgy electronic music, which is not my favourite, but I found my head subconsciously bobbing up and down to the beat a few times, so I guess I liked it! Liked Songs Added: Song Of Life Inspection (Check One)
3.1 Hmm, on paper I should like this, but it's fairly mid. More radio friendly version of early Autechre, more upbeat, but a bit like early Autechre the songs go on too long, are too repetitive, but unlike Autechre dont contain any great hooks or breakdowns. However, I do enjoy the genre, and I do find it pleasant to work to. Not rating it too badly, but don't think I'll be listening again.
Escuchando esto para desayunar e irse al trabajo es el peor contexto para ponérselo y aún así lo he disfrutado bastante. Buen descubrimiento
Pretty mid-tier 90's techno. It’s not bad, but there’s nothing here that really stands out or makes it memorable.
Normally when the word “electronic” comes up on this list I groan and prepare for two hours of weird sci-fi movie soundtracks. At least this had SOME melody!
I would rather listen to daft punk but it was ok
I found this album monotonous and dull, made worse by the fact it's two hours long. It's possible it's a good record from a genre I just don't like
3.5/5 White men? Huh. If you say so. I guess the British can be okay sometimes! I would've described this as ambient afro-inspired dance music, but those are two pasty British men soooooooo. To be so honest I'm not sure why it's on this list, it doesn't feel particularly inspired, but maybe I'm missing some context. Some of these songs are SO long, by the time I thought I might be over half done with the album I'd only gotten 4 songs in. Phew. Probably not going on the playlists.
I haven’t listened to this album since I was a baby raver and considering how long ago that was, this album absolutely holds up. Lots of genres going on here, but I can’t resist the acid house and dub vibes. It’s a great mix of bangers and more ambient, trip-hop tracks. I was not expecting to rave my face off in the kitchen while making coffee and breakfast but it put me in a great mood and was a lovely surprise for this geriatric raver.
Fun dance music, and with a lil more pizzazz than the other recent 90s electronic albums I've gotten. How many more can there be on this list?
Faded into the background.
It was not bad, but it was overlong, and the songs sounded very similar to my untrained ears.
Oh, hey look, it's another electronic album that no one outside of England has ever heard! This one is slightly better than the last because it has some life. A decent listen for a dance record
Favorite track: Open Up Pretty decent record, though it's nothing I haven't heard before. The John Lydon feature on Open Up worked really well, however.
Familiars sounds from the noughties. Would work better in a smoky club with strobes, but there are enough hooks to keep my feet tapping while working.
What in the Johnny Rotten electronica
Yet another middling example of this 90s British electronic music.
Into this! If anything a little underwhelming
It is perhaps an unfair, backward-looking assessment, but now that these kinds of techno beats have been so established and used over and over and over again, this album feels fairly cliché. A bit like how DaRude's Sandstorm gets rolled out at every hockey game. So credit where credit is due. Leftfield is one of the progenitors of this type of progressive house production. From my current vantage point, however, there is a definite cheese factor that is hard to get over. Contemporaries like The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim have aged better.
2,6/5
Not my thing. Well produced but just not my type of music for the most part
Well engineered. Otherwise a little light.
Decent, somewhat spacey EDM. Never quite crosses the threshold into annoying (though the last track, 21st Century Poem, comes close). There’s a time when I would’ve been into this.
Not usually a fan of house or electronic but I didn't mind this at all!
Not really very interesting to me, but I get why people would like it
04/02/2026 I didn't hate it, but it wasn't for me. Spotify listeners: 396.5k
Liked some but would have been better to be in a club dancing to the beat
I liked bits of this, particularly when things got a bit dubby or there were these more breakbeat-y sections. A lot of it washed over me and was background noise. Fave Tracks; Melt, Inspection (Check One) 3.1/5
This felt like a dance album from the early 00s. I'm just sure I'd come back to it often
Not my style but some good music.
Not something I’ll revisit in full again, but I did enjoy having this on at the office while I banged out an hour or so of work. Kept me awake which is all I can ask.
I don’t mind Downtempo electronic sounds, but this just hit me kind of boring
Listened while snowplowing in a nor’easter, not bad
Pretty interesting techno album but not my favourite genre so didn’t finish the album.
This was poolside listening, and I think it was aided by that. It's very cool, albeit highly repetitive (as the genre should be I guess). Also, obviously, far too long. A fun listen while I drown in Saigon lager, but not something I'll reach for in the future.
iskreno, za elektroniku dosta dobro, bilo je fora. glas džona lajdona ugodno me iznenadio, pa evo jedna lijepa trojka
Fine EDM. Maybe good for background music.
It's house. "Progressive" house in fact. I like a lot of the tunes individually, but as a whole they become a bit monotonous.
90s Techno. Auch mit goa-artigem und Afro-style-vocals
Not listened to much of their stuff but ready for it. Can already see what the reviewer who said it’s like a 2000 PlayStation racing soundtrack meant 👏🏻 but kind never gets past third gear. And being 25% through this list, feels SO heavily UK weighted and 80-00’s. Okay, getting a little bit of fourth gear. And again, these albums are odd to listen to in the day and would probably have a totally different view in a club with it for an hour. Was very much background music and didn’t even realise it had finished and restarted. Better than “meh” but nothing that’ll make me go back (3.5)
While I love most electronica, I found this sort of meh. Most of the instrumentals work better ("Melt") than the tracks with vocals. The exceptions for me were only the hits "Inspection (Check One)" and "Open Up". There were much better and more interesting releases that year that are not on this list: David Bowie's OUTSIDE (my favorite Bowie album of all time), Sister Machine Gun's BURN and Tears for Fears RAOUL AND THE KINGS OF SPAIN, just to name a few.
if I've said it once on this 1001 Albums journey, I've said it more than a few times: while I can see how this was game-changing for the time, it leaves me a bit cold. (naming your forward-thinking house project Leftfield also strikes me as just a bit on the nose, but I'm not gonna dock points for that.) this is the album that the term "progressive house" was coined to describe, and "progressive" doesn't quite mean the same thing in house as it does in rock or soul or what have you. Leftfield's left-field qualities don't manifest as a proclivity for odd time signatures or non-functional harmony; instead, they come from the group's lengthy, minimalist approach to songwriting, informed largely by dub and reggae music. alongside the use of plenty of guest singers from the reggae world (a common trait for British electronic albums of this era), we've also got Toni Halliday and John Lydon, inclusions which undoubtedly drew the rock audience into the fold. I can appreciate all of this, but at the end of the day, I just find most of these songs overly long, with some particularly dated percussion and synthesizer sounds at times. plus, at 70 minutes, you can tell they really wanted to fill that CD out. maybe I'd warm up to this a bit if I could hear it in a club or a concert hall, where they probably meant for me to hear this.
I mean it’s cool dance music but how do I differentiate it? I guess it’s same as someone not into metal and them saying it all sounds the same. My ear is just not tuned to be able to differentiate it from anything else.
Not the most exciting of '90s electronica on the list, can get stale but still more interesting than a lot of other albums
First listen was a 1 star, but listening more I got more into it than I originally expected. Actually started to enjoy it.
House music isn't a genre I really know anything about, but I enjoyed listening to this. The album blends techno with an interesting mix of genres in a way that sounds intriguing and fresh even now, thirty years after its release. I'm not sure if I'll be listening to this again any time soon as it's just not my usual genre, but I definitely really liked this. Edit: While I still like this album and appreciate it for its impact and artistic credit, I wound up changing my initial 4/5 to a 3/5, simply because to me, it just doesn't hold up in the way many other classic albums from even this era do. If I could give this 3.5 stars, I would. Unfortunately that isn't possible, and rounding this up to a 4 would put it among albums that it simply doesn't compare to in my opinion. 3.5/5 but closer to 3/5 than a 4/5
Good housey dance
Interesting album, fun twists and turns. A great vibe for getting on your feet and doing stuff (e.g. cooking).
First song I listened to was good but need to listen more to give a better opinion ! Will listen more :) my dad thought the singer sounded like massive attack singer
Decent.
An interesting album, I liked Original the most.
Not at all when I was expecting but it was okay. Some forgettable tracks and some really cool ones
A proper electo album. The length at 2 hours and spoken word elements only drawbacks. High 3
Some great tracks such as Song of Life and Open up, but a lot of ordinary material sonic the way.
Do I like techno now? Or house or whatever this is called?
Interesting to say the least. Reminded me of like a ps1 game soundtrack
More entertaining and powerful than expected - would accompany Sterner Regnix to a concert night.
Had a good sound to it, not quite my genre but enjoyed it.
very decent and nice listen
