Reviews (page 5 of 7)
New age club music. A song or two are ok but an entire album is exhausting. Not as boring as some of the other electronic albums on this list.
Not sure if my memory serves me right, but I remember this cover being quite the ubiquitous sight in people's record crates back then and me expecting to hear some greatness on there, because of that. And how it fell flat? A safe, rather boring and just sufficiently pleasant version of *other* UK electronic music of that time. At least that's what I feel today.
I remembered liking it much more when it came out.
Well this album sure came out of the dugout…. Anyway this was one of those days where I had to crowbar in an hour of my day to listen to this when I wanted to do other things which made it difficult for me to fully enjoy it, especially after getting a similar ambient electronica album yesterday. Fortunately I found bright spots on tracks like the original but this prog house stuff doesn’t work for me the same way that electronica can.
I liked the general vibe, cohesivity was good but maybe a bit too much, couldn't really hear the difference between the sound of most songs. Gave me some much needed dance breaks during my deep flow work sesh this morning! Unremarkable in every other way but generally enjoyable, would potentially use Song of Life in an ecstatic dance set
wide mix of electronica tunes hard to summarise as one album; "Release the pressure" didn't enjoy at all "Afro left" was a banger "Melt" such a chill out "Song of life" some great vocal samples "Original" slow but great progression, very 90's speaking vocals "Black flute" Mostly house style - not a fan "Space Shanty" Nice Piano but core sample too repetitive "inspection" Had a chance to be a banger but again was too slow a beat "Storm 3000" The pattern of how songs are laid out is now very clear, still enjoying though "Open up" Hate John Lydon "21st Century Poem" Trying to be deep, offers nothing Overall it's a 3.1. Could have been 4 with more out and out bangers on the album, but too samey and loop based as the album progressed
enjoyable, albeit a bit repetitive in the second disc
Chill but dull, I owned this cd back in the day because you were supposed to, not enough piano happy house bangers for me. All a bit samey
Usually not my preferred genre(s), but Leftism still had a lot to offer. From deep progressive house to danceable jungle beats featuring none other than Johnny Rotten himself this a great ride. I think it easily too long and there are moments where I simply lose focus. Maybe I’m meant to? But when I notice that I’m losing focus it’s rarely a plus.
I liked this one more than I thought I would. I’ve never heard of Leftfield, but the music reminded me of a modernized version of the mid-90s group, Enigma. I actually found myself tapping my foot at times.
I enjoyed, like being in the club but the club is now my kitchen.
I was really hoping for something more inspired from an album called "leftism."
The 90's seems to be the decade for house, trance and tribal music, Leftfield was one of those band that seemed to pave the way for some of the bigger names like Prodigy, Underworld, Chemical Brothers, etc. There are a few songs on this album I remember mainly from the Hackers OST. This was never my style of music, but I loved Hackers so I played that OST all the time (that orbital song is my fav). This is classified as progressive house, I think because some of these songs are more tribal, trance and even dub. While I know this was influential in the electronic genres, I think I prefer some of the more innovative artists that came after Leftfield. Standouts: Song of Life, Original, Open Up
I liked some songs, so I’ll give it a 3.25. It’s a long album and not really my vibe as much, but it does have some cool stuff.
Definitely a genre-defining album. Probably won’t listen to it again but it was certainly the backdrop for a lot of late nights in the mid 1990s!
Pretty good actually even for the time, they laid down some good clubbin kinda dance music
My rule for electronic music is: was it pleasant enough to have on in the background? Yes? 3 stars. So… 2 stars.
62/100
As usual I found the drum and bass elements repetitive and the album as a whole overlong, but it was elevated by a greater variety and diversity of vocals.
AIGHT
The difference between listening on Tuesday to Wednesday was startling. Tuesdays are obviously the best day for this kind of music. Wednesday, not so much.
not bad, eventhough I listen few electronic musci.
Koronan tuoma horkka vei sopiviin tiloihin tämän musiikin tahdissa. Ei varmasti perusarjessa jaksaisi kuunnella, mutta voisi toimia esim. videopelin taustamusana.
Classic house, already had 3 tracks in rotation, however feel the three were definitely highlights, rest of the album acted as more filler. 3/5.
Decent club music
Cool album
Was goed voor op de achtergrond
I liked this more than I expected to. I really don’t have a lot more to say than that. I had it in the background while I was working from home and it was engaging enough without distracting me.
Eh?
Enjoyable. Sounds a bit generic in 2023 but obviously that isn't fair.
I don’t like house, but I liked this. I’m a fan.
good but I don’t love house music
A disabled dog limping into the sea to drown. It's okay Little Jake, it's okay. You don't have to be afraid anymore. Lick your bum bum one last time and say goodbye.
didn't listen to it all. sort of jumbles the brain 2.8
I know very little about house music, but this album does bump. Space Shanty really got me grooving, and the singles spread throughout were also solid. The bass is really heavy on most songs, and I love that. I don’t think I have the context to truly appreciate this one, but I can see how this would have influenced Disclosure or the EDM crowd. Would plan to come back to this one.
Test
Really love the sped-up reggae groove on the first track. Overall vibe of the album is very euphoric, with some high-energy parts and some much mellower.
House music. Well, not the "pure" kind of it that can be found in LFO's "Frequencies" or some of theose earlier Detroit acts. More like a "big beat" version of it. The Prodigy specialized in "punk" aggro energy, while The Chemical Brothers favored pyrotechnic psychedelics (or psychedelic pyrotechnics, I don't know...). Leftism's own trick was to sprinkle a lot of dub or reggae influences here and there. And it works out. Mostly. Even if that fomula didn't yield tracks that were as successful or memorable as the hits released by the two aforementioned acts. This album is what it is, I guess. Some of it aged surprisingly well, some of it didn't. I'm rather indifferent to the whole thing, to be honest. It's hard to invest emotions into a style originally meant to point towards the future (see the name of the cut closing the proceedings), which, ironically, sounds so dated now. Yet I can still sense that a lot of imagination has been put into most of those compositions, and that its tracklisting is pretty dynamic, building up to an interesting John Lydon featuring on the penultimate song. 3/5 for the purposes of this list, translating to a 8/10 grade for more general purpose (5+3). Number of albums left to review: 426 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 264 Albums from the list might* include in mine later on: 141 (including this one, waiting to see of it grows on me later on). Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 174
Started well, but went a bit too leftfield after that
Hacienda
de quoi rythmer une aprem de crochet dans le train
it’s ok u can dance to it i guess
Archetypal 90's trance. I kinda like this sort of vibe- easy to chill to.
Nice sounding record and pleasing background music. I don't listen to much British electronic music and I can't stand most club music. This one is listenable, so this one gets a pass. Essential? Definitely not from me.
I liked the electronic house sounds, but overall it felt bloated and unstructured. There were not any moments where I went "Hm, interesting". I was even stoned while listening to it but even that didn't help apparently. i'm giving it a three only because I'm a simp for electronic music.
Kinda vibey, but also not my favorite. It reminds of techno music, but also music that you see in movies when someone is hallucinating.
This was fine in the background.
Decent, especially the John Lydon song, but dance music albums often drag a bit. I prefer their later stuff, ii think, but didn't hate this.
Very different to anything else I have listened to so far. I liked the vocals on the first fee tracks and the varied choices of drums were good. It felt like the songs went on for a long time but I still thought it wasn't a bad album
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would since I’m not really into House.
Another 90s album recommended to me that is again very much of its time. Fits right in with Prodigy, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, and so on. Made for the clubs so a little harder to appreciate while working on the couch, but it is good for focus. The production is flawless, and it's a trip to listen to with headphones or a multi-speaker system. I'm between a 3 and 4 on it. If it had my favorite Leftfield track ("A final hit") on it, easily 4.
Leftism is the debut album by English electronic music duo Leftfield. This progressive house album was mostly critically acclaimed at release and was praised for being one of the first album-length works of dance music - especially from Britain. The labeled genre of progressive house doesn't quite cover the wide range of EDM influences like tribal, trance, and more. This album is a classic in the EDM - more specifically house - genre. I loved Leftfield's sound that can be enjoyed just by relaxing or dancing. It was such a great piece of EDM history from the 90's, that I thought was weird I had never heard of this album or duo before. This was a wonderful album!
3/5
Interesting mix of early EDM
Not bad. Dance music isn’t my genre though.
Pretty cool
Chugs along, has some flashy, inspirational moments; occasionally drags and feels repetitious; but when it is in the zone, it is in the zone. Good for focus work and other stuff I'm sure.
Meh
Intéressant! Electro. Faut être dans le mood
Definitely not bad but nothing I could tell that distinguishes it from any other electronic music. 3.5 stars
Would eat a fistful of ecstasy and listen again British electronic music singers are funny sounding Melt lived up to its name it certainly melted my brain
3.5
Ok electronica, was relaxing to listen to, but couldn’t find it engaging
This is an clever assortment of house and techno sounds. Some classic trippy club fare mixed with dub, trip hop and tribal/World Beat sounds. I appreciated the unexpected presence of John Lydon on "Open Up." This is quite good, if overly long. Fave Songs: Melt, Storm 3000, Open Up, Song of Life, Space Shanty
3.5
This was definitely not my type of music, but I enjoyed it more than I thought. There were even some vocals to mix things up.
Not a dance music fan particularly, but I don't mind this one bit. It certainly fills the space with sound, features some very satisfying beats and drops, and the electronica of 'Melt' was pleasingly redolent of Kraftwerk. Aye, alright.
I kept waiting for a drop of something, bass or otherwise.
This album was decent, but I wouldn't say great. A couple of tracks stood out for me more but not necessarily the ones that are (apparently) more known.
Background music, but OK in that role. Seemed like a strong 90s Bristol sound to me.
Not a huge EDM listener, but the afro influence on this record made it much more interesting to me. Fun record to have on in the background. Will very likely listen again.
That was the macarena right
Yeah I really like this, it has so many sounds that came along years later in the late 90s trance anthems era, dunno how influential it would've been but hard to deny it must've had an impact. Stuff I can just stick on and chill to but also I've always found it really helps me focus.
Did not enjoy this for the first five minutes, then got way more into it as I listened. Does the album get better as it goes on or did I just get into the groove better? I'm not a massive fan of dance music, but this is way more listenable than a lot of it - still suffers from a lot of the songs being overly repetitive, but it's good. Open Up is wonderful - I definitely prefer their music with lyrics over the top of it rather than the purist dance music. 3/5, verging on a 4 but a bit too repetitive a bit too often to get there.
3 Looking at the album description and seeing “electronic” and “dance” really had me prepared to dislike this one, and I even had a joke set up where I was going to say it’s called Leftism because it never sounds right, but I ended up enjoying this more than I thought I would. A lot of the album is actually more ambient sounding than dance, another genre I’m not a fan of, but compared to Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno, I actually thought a lot of the soundscapes were really cool. In some ways, they reminded me of the scores to video games I used to play as a kid. Release the Pressure is a solid opener and dance number, but I realized about halfway through it kind of sounded just like Macerena, which is honestly a better, catchier song… and it has its own dance! It was also pretty cool hearing Johnny Rotten on Open Up - like him or not you have to admit his voice is iconic. A lot of beep boop, but cooler beep boop than I’ve heard before. Favorite songs: Melt, Release the Pressure, Open Up
I was locked in a crisis mode at work and this played throughout in the background so I made it through. If it wasn’t for that I would’ve been very upset with the two hours
Innovators of the Chillwave genre that shows not only an influence from world music, but also the lengths any track and groove can go. These extended jams and tones can oscillate from soundscapes, relaxation, and larger peppy tunes. It is easy to see why this group had been approached for Soundtrack work.
Some very good tracks but not sure if enough to warrant a double album.
Not bad. It comes with the usual pitfalls of electronic music (namely lengthy and repetitive tracks), so it's something I'd need to be in the mood for, but given the right circumstances this is a solid album.
EDM/House is best enjoyed live or in a club. Listening to this as part of this challenge was not great, bur still decent music all in all.
Great mix of ambient electronica, house, dub step, for your 90’s rave party. Would have liked more vocals though.
It feels wrong to be listening to this album through headphones, it feels like it should be playing in the background as I walk through seedy alleyways and through grimy underground clubs in a neo-noir film or Matrix ripoff. Some cool stuff happening on here, but some of the production choices are hugely dated (the fake record scratches on Original are strangely endearing though). Also, most of the songs are a minute or two too long. I don't see myself revisiting the album, and even for the songs I really liked, I preferred parts of them over the whole. Still, enjoyed the listen well enough. 3 stars feels about right. standout tracks: the run from Inspection -> Open Up
It sounded like lofi study music meets The Matrix. Not bad, but not memorable.
The singing on this album brought this from a 4 to a 3 for me. Without the singing, this album has held up surprisingly well. While I can tell it’s mid-90s electronica (a pretty defined sound), I thought it only barely sounded dated. I wouldn’t listen to this again but not bad. Not bad at all.
Dark, brooding electronica... felt like it was bubbling and simmering but then never quite came fully to the boil.
Solid cohesive trance album. Impressive that this was released in 1995. Ahead of its time I’d say.
Enjoyed it a lot! X
Honestly not a bad electronic album. I'm usually pretty harsh with these because there a high bar to cross for me to enjoy listening to one of these outside of the context of being inebriated and in a large crowd of people dancing. But I enjoyed this one at work and could see myself listening to it in other contexts
franchement bien, plein de styles techno différents, vachement en avance sur son temps on dirait. ptit côté infected mushroom ?
Probably revolutionary at its time; an enjoyable, but somewhat pedestrian sounding electronic record today.
Loved hearing an electronic dance music from the 90s. Cool to see how things have progressed.
Some good chunes on here yeah
first listen pretty sleepy
Reasonable mid 90s dubby electronic dance/trance music. I recognised a few of the singles and more famous tracks, but found it less interesting than Orbital or Chemical Brothers.
Okay
3.5/5
Rave album
I understand the appeal, but it didn’t grab me, and it was far too long to stick with
Hi: Storm 3000, Open Up Lo: Afro Left, Song of Life, Inspection This is a pretty influential dance/trance/industrial/jungle album, I've definitely heard many of these tracks and synth patches in passing and DJ sets, but never really know what I was hearing. Most of this is pretty good music for the code zone, or just for...relaxation. What sours it for me is something I dislike about a lot of this type of EDM: I call it "jungle jabber"...It just grates on me. The instrumental tracks are pretty good and feel pretty at home next to some Front Line Assembly, Prodigy, VNV Nation, KLF, or even the Matrix soundtrack.
Never heard of them before but I enjoyed it. While dance music you can still listen as background. I liked the ambient stuff a bit more.
Unless on a dance floor, this is good headphones music while doing work.
interesante electrónica noventosa. al menos entre un tema y el otro algo variaba. una linda propuesta.
I do a lot of house dancing so I'm very familiar with the genre. This is fine music but there is way better house stuff out there.
Enjoyed this album… get lots of work done in the office
very interesting album, electronic but older, with words. Some interesting beats, but nothing that wowed me. I'm sure someone would say these songs laid the groundwork for future electronic music but it felt a tad basic. I do like the album cover though!
I liked this. Another Euro house album, though I enjoyed it quite a bit more than the "jungle" ones we've had. A handful of infectious beats that I'll enjoy returning to. Nothing spectacular but I like this. Favorite tracks: Afro Left, Song of Life, Inspection, Release the Pressure. Album art: A shark's jaw over a camera lens? Not sure I understand this, but at least it's kinda cool to look at. 3.5/5
Atmospheric and electronic
I like the dance stuff more then the atmospheric stuff. Kind of a background record.
It’s fine. I don’t listen to a lot of electronic music but when I do this is the type I like, stuff I can bob my head to. May get played again when in the right mood.
In the middle.
Not my thing but a couple of great tunes elevates the score
Went in to this with super low expectations. EDM usually bores me (unless I’m plastered) but this was refreshingly interesting - most of the time. Pretty cool they got Johnny Rotten for “Open Up”. Fun beats - I might even listen to this again Fave tracks: “Release the Pressure” “Space Shanty” “Open Up”
De laatste dagen gaan we goed. Niet alleen maar ouwe rock of britpop. Leftfield kende ik alleen van naam. Ik ga dat verder onderzoeken.
It's a slower, softer and lighter electronic album. Compared with other album releases during that time. (6/10) FT: Original, Release The Pressure
Some good tracks but nothing stand out
Had no idea what to expect here. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Decent electronic album. Good background music. Not my favorite genre, but it was enjoyable, but not memorable at all.
3/5
Not bad, I enjoyed it playing in the background during work. But I also didn't enjoy it enough to think of it as more than background music.
3.3 - I worried initially that this would be another uniquely British album selection on this Euro- and British-centric list. And in this case, my suspicions turned out to be true. While there are some great moments that transcend 1995, especially in the beginning ("Afro Left"), it overall sounds like what you might hear at some tired airport bar.
Funky and cool beats, but too many tracks take too long to pick up steam
Interessante para conhecer mais de tecno.
Good beats for film
really really early dance/electro. Alright but it goes on forever (2 hours)!
Some variety of beats, good energy for puttering around the house doing chores. More to sink my teeth into than some of the other electronica I've heard recently, but still tough to just sit down and take in.
I get it. This is pretty chill. Still very weird to just like listen to casually
Always have time for this album
It's house music. Not too intense though. Could be good music to have while trying to concentrate on something.
Decent 90s electronic music album. Some tracks are very good, and the vibe is sustained all through the record. I fell however, that jams at the start of the record are better, I could remember Afro Left, Release the Pressure and Original songs very well. The rest, well, not that impressive.
I don't think I gave it a fair shake. I wasn't really in the mood for 90s rave music. Some songs hit harder than others. Space Shanty is def a bop
This is much better now than it was in 1995 when every DJ was obsessed with how cool Leftfield were. It's pretty pleasant background music, I quite enjoyed it going on around me but never really got involved.
Enjoyed most of this, gets a bit too long for me to listen to this style but I still enjoyed plenty of it
fairly dated + simplistic 90s dance pop with some world music vibes. It's what I imagine the Blade movie soundtrack to be. At >1hr in length it's a bit of a marathon listen
6
3.5 pretty good
Fine electronic album. My listening experience was decent because I was doing something while this album was on but even still it got somewhat annoying at times, especially with how long it is. 5
Different but chill
Solid
I honestly don’t really see how this one is so much different/better than the typical 90s electronica. I mean, it wasn’t bad, but I didn’t find it to be anything special.
swear I’ve seen this album cover in my dreams. best songs are the 7 min ones. any longer + I woulda given it a 2.
Used to be great, but hasn’t aged that well.
Not bad, I was coding and this was perfect for in the background. I'm sure there's some history here that's important but I typically don't get much out of typical house/techno unless it's live. I suppose 2.5 up to 3.
Not bad. Had some really cool techno songs in this album
Cool ambient music. A little like Mickey Hart meets Rusted Root meets Daft Punk.
This is much better now than it was in 1995 when every DJ was obsessed with how cool Leftfield were. It's pretty pleasant background music, I quite enjoyed it going on around me but never really got involved.
Alright for what it was.
not sure this ages well. Didn't hate it. Didn't get a chance to listen to all of it.
Ihan ok! Aika hidastemponen ja maalaileva mulle. Oisin kuvauksen perusteella kaivannu tanssittavampaa. Tää on semmonen huojuttava minkä päälle koitaa huutaa baarissa. Mutta ihan menevä ja kilistelevä!
Alright I guess, just don’t want to sit through an hour of it.
These are the type of songs that are fun for like 90 seconds. Somehow these songs go on for 4x that length. Gets so old, so fast. The review citing this as background video game music was spot on. This is rocket league music.
Less ‘banging’ than I expected.
The Matrix Reloaded ass beats
better than expected
Really frustrating that like 2 or 3 of these songs were legit good and the rest of this over an hour album was just like the other electronic music we’ve had.
Pretty middle of the road techno, especially for the year it was made. Nothing really stuck with me from this.
This is not going to make the restive Commonwealth nations happy. Yet another mystery UK inclusion. And a reminder that it's utterly random as to which electronic albums are commercially successful. It's ok. This is a style of music that's easy to make by the yard if your want to churn out competent filler. Challenging to make a killer track, though. You need an idea. You need to do some real writing. A solid album of this kind -- whether it's Something Or Other House or Some Version of Electronica-Dub (they're all swimming around in the same pond) generally has 1-3 really, really good tracks and a bunch of ok ones. This album is all ok filler, no killers. From Wikipedia: "The album was described as progressive house, although some journalists found that label too limiting, suggesting the album incorporated many genres." The fact that one could go track by track and find another artist working at the same time making tracks rather like this one, but better ... the variety just is not the strength someone thinks it is. Rootsman's International Language of Dub; the Guerilla In Dub compilation; No Smoke, International Smoke Signal; many albums from Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound System (Dub Syndicate, Echomania; the first Audio Active album -- the debut of the Tokyo Space Cowboys -- as two examples); most Thievery Corporation albums; the best Badawi or Dr. Israel albums; the Crooklyn Dub Consortium compilations; many acid jazz compilations .... there are So Many more interesting albums released around the same time working the same general aesthetic. What are we doing here? Docked one star for failing to successfully realize a single idea. Even the best track, Inspection (Check One) ... much more dynamic, much livelier, and yet -- at several points, when you want it to go -- There; instead, it goes .... over Here, for some reason ... ? Whaaa--?? Are you sure you guys know what you're doing? Also from Wikipedia: "After completing the album, the duo initially were not pleased with it."
If we were applying some version of "The Rule" right now, I would probably use it for this album. I'm trying to be respectful and give each record a chance. Trying to learn something and be open-minded. But whatever this is, it's not for me. Some of the more positive reviews online are about how fantastic this album was for the reviewers while they were tripping their heads off in the late 90s. Sounds great, but it didn't do much for me in my current non-tripping, non-90s situation. If more of the songs sounded like Inspection, I would have liked it a lot more. As it went, I just could not listen to the whole thing, or even close to it. Sorry Leftfield.
It’s fine for some atmospheric background music, but it’s too long to make a good active listen. 2.5/5
Interesting album, but i dont think i would give it another listen
2, because the last track has nice melodies. For the rest of the thing, I guess I had to do drugs to enjoy that kind of music and I don't want to do drugs
Guess it would be OK if I was in a club or wanted some background music.
Probably the best electronic album so far. But they’ve all been mid.
I’d say that for its time, that sound was quite fresh. But today, to me, it sounds very dated.
I don’t hate it, but it is certainly not for me. 2/5
DJ beats or video game background tracks
I guess if I was doing X in London in the mid 90’s this would have been awesome. In the garage working in’s the truck, not so much.
I feel like a bit of an arrogant American when I bump up against really mediocre British albums on this list, feeling like the book author is biased and not objective at all. I probably would do the same having limited exposure to music from outside the US… but I digress. This was one of those really mediocre British albums that don’t deserve to be on this list. Nothing special electronica. (2)
I feel like I'm in a world music rave while listening to this.
# Album Name: Leftism # Artist: Leftfield # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: I enjoy electronic / dance music but i found this very bland to be honest. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No
Eh
Eh, not my type
I was digging the afro-electronic vibe it gave me, but like a lot of electronic albums, the music drags longer than it needs to and it more repetitive that makes for a comfortable listen. This type if music fits better in the background of a dance club. Not for me.
Pretty cool, Tulum beach club music type of vibe. Nice to listen to and zone out
meh
Not my speed
Wasn’t expecting house when i saw that cover, but it’s groovy enough. Not usually much of a house guy, but this was ok.
Decidedly inessential.
esto q es
Some good moments on this. Overall though, it descended into background music for me. I think I attributed that down to the music not really taking any risks. Very doubtful I’ll revisit it.
I mostly felt like I was just waiting for this album to be over. I didn't feel a connection to it and heard a lot of "waa, waa, waa, waap." I understand that it's a genre and maybe on a different day I would have enjoyed it more, but it mostly felt like meh. If it had been on the radio or a playlist, I would have skipped pretty much, if not all, of the songs on this album. It feels unfair to give this album a two, but I'm not sure it deserves a solid three. So the question is--which number does it get?
C'est rough. Beaucoup de musique électronique toutes un peu de la même époque au UK on dirait. C'était probablement un époque foisonnante qui s'adressait à quelqu'un d'autre que moi. Ça m'épuise.
Don't have too much to say about this one. It's boring. Kinda annoying. Nothing sticks and I don't want to listen to it anymore. Wouldn't recommend. Sorry yawl. 4.0/10
Every song goes on way longer than it needs to, would probably be better live
Someone on here called this "Background music from a PS2 racing game" and that made me realise what it reminded of. It's PS1/2 demo disc menu music.
Yeah, I guess I would recommend this if my doctors office wanted much cooler hold music. That’s about it. Was this cooler in 1995? Unknown, I was not alive then. Season: Early Summer Favorite Song: Black Flute
Et par interessante og fengende ting, men stort sett ufattelig kjedelig og/eller irriterende. Klassisk "på tide å gå et annet sted"-musikk de fyrer opp på VT altfor ofte.
music my microwave would like
Dance album
This wasn't my thing at all. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
Man, it’s really gonna be a tough cell for me to get into EDM. I mean I’m not gonna give it a one. This is a 2.5 album as it gets. I just like having words with songs and not just beats man, but it was a solid output if you are into EDM or a history, I would definitely recommend this album but for me in my rankings, gonna have to give it a two nothing really drove me to be like it needs to be a three or higher
Fine, I guess. Background music that doesn't bother me.
Nah.
Long and mostly boring. 2 stars
I didn't enjoy this. Even the songs that have some good bones end up being way too long and repetitive. The song with John Lydon was alright. Generous 2 stars.
2.5
Not my favorite
eh
Deze generator draagt niet bij aan meer waarderen van de dancemuziek en triphop uit de 90's. Net als de recensies die ik erover schrijf: saai en repetitief. 5/10
Kind of good, but also doesn’t quite work as an album - a lot of this is really just a space journey soundtrack. Also, like many electronic albums on this list, it’s So. Fucking. Long.
I'm not sure I really needed to hwar this before I die.
Música electrónica que no volveré a escuchar.
More dance music, though this was more spacy dub stuff. This was even less my thing really, feels like this is meant to be background music for a party I wouldn't want to be at. Not unlistenable, not good. 1.5.
I reckon this is a very good example of an electronica album, but it just isn't my thing really. Don't hate it, but never going to listen to it. It sounds clean and well produced, just not for me 2.5
ehhh not into, couldn’t finish it, better music to listen to at this time
There are a couple of build-ups if you squint hard enough, but maybe this only truly works at 3 a.m. in Ibiza when the lasers are doing most of the heavy lifting.
I remember back in the day, a coworker who was hugely into chicago house, got so overwhelmed by this album that he wouldn't shut up about it. I was much more interested in Portishead and the likes of Gravediggaz, Biohazard and the first Korn album. House music in general has never been of much interest to me, this album still feels all over the place to me and quite a bit boring to be honest.
Could say this one came out of leftfield. Just mid.
Wack. 2.5/5
Thoughts before listening: Uh techno I think? Probably European techno that used to play all the races and festivals back in the day. Review: So I definitely had the sound right. The songs with vocals remind me of the Prodigy a bit with the hard hitting beats and fast tempos. I am sure there is an official subgenre of techno that this falls into, but I have no idea what that would be. I don't hate this, but its also not something I would ever choose to listen to. To be fair, it also wasn't really for me 30 years ago when I was a teenager being told this was the future of popular music. I liked a few of the songs with vocals, including "Open Up" which includes Johnny Rotten....but then it just got so repetitive. I mean I'm sure this is great when you're in a field at Glastonbury at 2am raging on ecstasy, but its kind of annoying here at my desk this morning. I'm going 2-stars
The soundtrack to a dystopian movie that ever got made.
(35/100)
Album #61 Leftfield: Leftism With a name like Leftism by the Leftfield, I was expecting some sort of socialist punk; however, knowing the nature of this list, I really shouldn’t be surprised that it was another pointless, long, obscure, British electronic album from the nineties. Entirely forgettable, nothing really to say; however, this one didn’t annoy me as much as the previous five, so I guess it’s a two-star; maybe I’m just getting used to this scene, and after 100 more albums of this type, I’ll finally give in and give one a 5. Best Songs: Release the Pressure, Original, Open Up Worst Song: Afro Left Score out of 10: 4.5
Niet af.
these reviews about this album are beginning to worry me. here goes nothing Release the Pressure - 2/5 Afro-Left - 2/5 Melt - 3/5 Song of Life - 2/5 Original - 4/5 Black Flute - 3/5 Space Shanty - 2/5 Inspection (Check One) - 5/5 Storm 3000 - 2/5 Open Up - 1/5 21st Century Poem - 2/5 Average score: 2.5/5 ⭐️⭐️ i'll be honest. the author could've just had us listen to portishead, massive attack, prodigy and maybe fatboy slim to showcase *good* British electronic music. i know the purpose of his list is to show off some albums we might not have been exposed to otherwise, but the artists i mentioned have been the only ones in this genre (or close to it) that have been worth listening to in my experience that being said, while this isn't nearly remarkable enough to consider a must-listen album in my opinion, it wasn't bad enough to warrant 1 star. after the first few questionable tracks, the middle section was noticeably easier to listen to (and even enjoy!)
Eh, it was alright.
I had very low expectations going in. Varied electronic music tracks that are all over the place. Some of it comes off as background music, other times it's very vocal forward. Feels like an homage to different styles and artists. The Lydon track obvious comes off very PiL. There's a Kraftwerk type track (Melt) which was pretty enjoyable. A Massive Attack type track (Massive Attrack?) A dancehall influenced track. Even something I would classify as JOCK JAMS to be played in an arena. It's not bad, per se, but doesn't do any of these things better than their influences. Surprisingly did not drag despite album length. Would not revisit. 2.5⭐️
Well, it certainly was out of left field. The opening tracks were interesting, and had a unique feel to me. But as time wore on, it started to tire me out in the same way that other 90s electronica usually does. Maybe because that incessant beat is meant to be felt while getting bottle service at a club, while I’m more prone to my early nights and tranquil mornings. I enjoyed it most at the end, with the atmospheric afterglow of “20th Century Poem” that I would’ve much rather listened to the whole time.
I enjoyed the first two minutes of just about every track. Being more of an ambient enjoyer, the vocal tracks took away from my experience. I also think I heard a pig squeal sampled in track two which was a bit unsettling. Ultimately a “par for the course” 90s electronica album that was about 20 minutes too long.
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. When it first started I was pretty excited. I thought it was going to be an ambient album, but then the vocals started. As the album went on, I realized the beginning of that first track was a bit of an outlier. This is really more of a dance album than ambient. It is not really exciting me in any kind of way - the instrumentation is a bit basic and repetitive, and the vocals don't do anything for me. I would not come back to this one.
2 out of 5. I'll admit I got a little lost in its trance for a moment.
Not Much to write home about and not a fan.
Trope filled and highly repetitive. Feels uninspired to me. It would have been a crime if it had beat Portishead Dummy.

It took me a couple false starts to actually listen to this album, and then was kinda into it through the first three or four tracks. After that though, it kind of wore on me and by then end I couldn't wait for it to be over. 90s deep house is a genre I actually like, but this felt lacking substance.
I really dont get electronic/dance music....these guys are supposed to be influential geniuses and the first song sounds like the Macarena mixed with something that would play under a nature video. I dont hate it, but I feel almost nothing. Can they make their beats without appropriating weird African and/or cliche lyrics about "letting go" or whatever? It always sounds dated and uninteresting to my ear. The monologues and voices all sound self-important. I try not to be a hater because there are cool moments where you can get into it, but overall I just dont enjoy the vibe.
Nothing memorable but it’s an album that you can get into a flow with.
"Leftism" by Leftfield was completely new to me, as I had never heard of the artist or the album before listening to it. Overall, it felt like a fairly typical electronic album for its time. Some of it worked for me, some of it did not. I especially did not enjoy the tracks with vocals, which often pulled me out of the flow. On the other hand, I did like the more progressive house-oriented tracks, where the album felt more focused and immersive. There is not much more for me to say about this one. It was fine in parts, but nothing that really stuck with me or made me want to dig deeper.
I enjoy electronica but found this one lacking. The whole thing felt sterile. That vibe was a bit of a thing in the 90's. This album also felt punishing at two hours. The tracks meandered and felt needlessly long. I don't need radio edits but put out your extended mixes as a separate release FFS. Coming in hot on the heels of Dummy and with Aphex Twin and Chemical Brothers both releasing quality records in 95, this one does not make the cut.
I’m honestly not really feeling any of these electronic genre albums. And the songs that are just straight up music kinda pisses me off. I’m all for no lyrics, but for half of the album to be that is a bit annoying. Anyway, it was probably a new thing to hear when it came out so good for that.
4/10 I think you had to be there
Standouts Melt
Sometimes I caught myself dancing a little but overall this album is a bit dull
Y'a des p'tits bouttes pas pire. 2.49 étoiles
Got through this but not one I enjoyed or would seek out again.
Niet helemaal mijn ding
C’est loooong, 2-3 morceaux sympa.. sinon ça tire en longueur 2.5-/5
Made want to play WipEout
Not bad but also nothing to be excited by. Not top 1001 material.
Another house album I found fine to listen to but nothing that grabbed me
Not my thing
I find the flow and structures of the song enjoyable, even loving much of the percussive elements but the synths are hit and miss for me and the vocals are just miss. There was this idea in the 80s and 90s that inspirational, motivational, almost spoken word sounding, ethereal vocals would really make a house track pop, and for me it does just the opposite. It makes me feel hungover!
Very vibey but wouldn't be a usual listen for me. Kinda neither here nor there.
I don’t get the hype AT ALL. This album was uninteresting and not notable especially for 2 hours. I defiantly didn’t listen to the full 2 hours but once ur like 20 minutes in u get the idea Fav Song: 4.3/10 2.1/5
I don’t really know when is a good time for me to listen to this type of music…
This made me turn right
This made me sell my House.
Annoying, but tolerable
Meh? I love electronica and wouldnt be sad to hear some of this in the clerb, but a lot of this was so forgettable. Melt was great. TWO! I’d rather listen to most BOOK clerb radio mixes.
p768. 1995. 2.5 stars. Well produced mid-90s dance album, best listened to in a field whilst off your tits on E. Tends to drag on a bit though. 3 on a good day, 2 on a bad.
Zzzzzzz is what I felt. It became boring
Like most electronica, it is incredibly boring. This album was way too long for something this uninteresting. They don't really do anything with the album and it's all over the place. No cohesion.
if you're really, really into house style music....then this might appeal. otherwise it's a bit of a bore after the first 4 or 5 minutes.
Listened to half, not my style
Extra star for the Johnny Rotten cameo. Otherwise meh.
This does nothing for me. 2/5
Not for me
Hørte kun en sang😬 gang i den!!
I listen to electronic music like this very rarely and when I do its to the songs that really catch my attention straight away. None of the songs on this album did that. I really get that 1995 feeling from the music and it feels old and that something is missing. I get the feeling that they probably influenced a lot of later artist with how familiar a lot of it sounds.
Pulsating, pugnacious, pounding.
Not left overwhelmed
An album I'd love to love. But no tracks grab me. Perhaps next time.
I don’t have much of great worth to comment on this. If you sort of let it was over you while doing something else, the tempo and variations, it is possible to not be too unpleasant. It’s well put together and sure it’s a hoot to the right ears in the right place, but I’m not high off my tits and it’s not 4am in a basement club so cannot fully appreciate.
At first I was intrigued and thought I was on for a surprise banger. A few tracks in and I was blowing hot and cold with the album. I like the murkier electro and the dub and jungle elements, but I don't get on with the repetitive nature of house beats. It was a nice peak into the world of the 90's rave scene and I could see myself getting on with it a lot more in that context. This is more considered than the average dance album. It had elements of more recent music that I like, so it was a good academic listen if not a new favourite.
Interesting take on electronic music from the 90s. But it's still electronica from the 90s.
Like many other electronic albums on this list, this album was not made for careful listening. This album is made for ambience, for parties, for background, but not to be heard in the forefront. The monotony just makes this album so hard to listen to. I can’t rate it a 1 because there’s some albums on here that are really offensive to the ears, and this sounded mostly good. It was just too repetitive, which is my personal critique most albums in this genre.
Music was very interesting, but just not my vibe.
Cut the length of every song in half and remove all vocals and then we’re talkin.
Where do I know this from? Does it just sound like the rest of the Hackers soundtrack? or is it actually there?
Must hear before I due? Nah. But definitely not the worst on this project.
Some fun moments, but overall pretty boring and waaay too long.
Someone said this was like a 90s racing game soundtrack but that would have been an upgrade.
Did nothing for me
I was already done with this after hearing the first couple songs
It was okay ... But it is EDM and British ... so 2 stars
Not for dedicated listening
not my thing
De la house tribale bien sympa, quelques perles, mais la musique électronique m'est un peu trop étrangère encore
Like many albums in this challenge, it's very of the time. That's not always a fault, and it's not one here. However, after listening to the original track listing of the album I don't think that this specific album necessarily needs to be in this challenge.
Interesting enough but not particularly distinctive from other artists in this genre. Not sure why this particular album is a “must listen”.
Continues on relentlessly, some songs could be decent in isolation but listening to it for an hour solid is just too much 2.5*
Its like fine. Okay I guess. Before you die? No. When you need to hack into the mainframe and have unlimited mountain dew delivered to your house in the late 1990's teen comedy movie. Yes.
I get it. It's early uhnz-uhnz. It's danceable for white folks if you're on enough molly. Some interesting loops here and there, but it's like "Study Beats Playlist 12" except half the tracks are 7+' long. So, fine.
I don't think I'll listen to all of it. After the first 2 songs, im realizing I never really loved that style of music. A little too EDM for me.
ok album. Not sure why it made the list of "must hear" music though
There was one song I went "hell yeah" for. I think it was Inspection
Fine. It’s telling that I looked up and thought “I like this song” and saw that Spotify just started playing something else after this album ended.
Not my thing
Aside from "Burn Hollywood, Burn", this album is completely forgettable.
Favorite Track: Original
Interesting sounds. Not really interested in pursuing much further
Thumpy and Zingy. Where does it go ?
Sounds like the preset tracks for when you used to download a mp3 player for your PC in the 90's.
Not really into dance music
Not for me
Eh
Tracks range from annoying to somewhat tolerable.
