Reviews (page 2 of 7)

An absolute masterpiece, seemingly and inexplicably under-appreciated given the low average rating. Still sounds fresh after 30 years.

I love the range of different styles and samples, brought along with those driving drums. This was such a solid, consistent album and was always great to hear when on a night out in the nineties.

Combining Afrofuturism with trip hop and very danceable dub and reggae inspired beats, this is probably one of the best dance albums of the 90s. I was initially drawn to the song Open Up featuring John Lyndon as a magnificently sneering guest vocalist, but there’s lots more to enjoy here. I particularly like the way that tracks like Release the Pressure and Afro Left build up into dance floor fillers. The production is immaculate and sounds great both on headphones and bass heavy speakers. Easy five stars from me!

Bomb ass techno music

I’m a BIG FAN of EDM. I loved this Album gets my blood pumping and my Big Toe a tapping

Not as big as Rhythm and Stealth for me, still amazing

What an album. Mixing Afro beats with dub, uplifting trance and hard techno, Leftfism was such an iconic album. Release the Pressure, Song of Life, Inspection, Original, Afro-Left and the anarchic, sneer laced Open Up (with John Lydon before he became a butter advertising, stuck up arsehole) the whole album is just perfect. I’d give this so much more than 5 stars.

The first minute or so sounded like some cool electronic ambient stuff from the 70s and I was REALLY into it. Maybe I should read the wiki first instead of diving blindly into albums. Anyways, after getting over the tiniest bit of disappointment that its 90s EDM instead, I was quickly back to enjoying it. The beats would seem repetitive, but the subtle changes, the slow addition and fading of instrumental elements made it ever-changing and fresh, and I couldn't help but relisten to some tracks immediately after finishing them. she (me) should be at the club!!!!!! Favs: Song of Life; Open Up; Original; Release the Pressure; Space Shanty;

I really liked this. This felt like quintessential electronica, but was also super creative. 4.5/5.0: Excellent

100% essential.

Float electronics without words. Exactly what I needed for my focus afternoon

There's nothing quite like some good old-fashioned doof doof bling bling.

What a show, it brought back the energy I thought I didn't have to enjoy such a vibrant album! You feel like moving to the sound of every beat... and it never stops, it's always pumping!

Classic British dance album full of anthems. Sounds better now than it did then. Song of Life is the standout track for me

Goddamn, these guys give KLF a good run for their money. 10/10

I have a ton of nostalgia for this album which I bought and intensively devoured when it first came out. I'm not 100% sure I'd give it five stars if I came to it fresh today - it's not as good as, say, Massive Attack's best. But I greatly enjoyed the revisit, so five stars it is.

It's a long album, but it's a lot of fun to listen to.

Like I said for my recent review of Blue Lines, I am Determined to stop liberally tossing 5s to albums I listened to extensively in my youth... Except, like I said for my recent review of Blue Lines..I can't start here - this still sounds so good... Finding the dub influences both more prominent and enjoyable than before, I think Renegade Soundwaves debut may have been an influence. Somehow brings back memories of post-club and Wipeout PS1 days (was this on the soundtrack?).

Genre defining progressive house. I was expecting something more chilled but I’d forgotten that it starts with some uptempo bangers. Consistent and varied throughout with intersting use of guest vocalists to add flavour. Anduperb album which I was glad to rehear after a good few years.

I always thought I preferred Underworld to Leftfield, but this album really is a banger. Especially when "Open Up" just comes out of nowhere and completely fucks you up.

Bangers

This is probably going to surprise nobody (local Leftfield/trance-in-general enjoyer, etc), but man, this is like if they got Mory Kanté to do the soundtrack for Tron and/or FreeSpace, and if you know me, you know how much of a compliment that is. Also, feels extremely on-brand for me to get jumpscared at the start of Inspection because The Orb used the same sample one time.

No notes, practically a perfect album. Always looking to listen to this again, it's a formative thing in my life and I make no apologies for this :)

this slaps so far 5/5

5 - Period

Ahhhhhhh shit! Leftfield!! nice. To be honest I was confusing Leftfield with Underworld both on the Trainspotting soundtrack. I am thoroughly enjoying this album! Trance-endental. There are parts that remind me of psy trance, like 1200 Micrograms and other parts that remind me of Plastikman. Fuck yeah man this album is fire. 5 million stars. lol

Fun. Synthy.

A classic in my collection, reminding me of college days.

My favorite so far by a mile. So many infectious songs, so entrancing

Yes 5 star electronic album from first half of 90s, Aphex Twin, the Black Dog, Chemical Brothers, Future Sound of London, the Orb, Orbital, Prodigy, Underworld.. Leftfield fits right in between lot of 5-star albums from that period. superflow, nice beats, all extremely wel

Electronic music from the nineties was the best. Not a weak track on this album, but Afro Left is probably my favourite.

90s EDM was amongst the most creative genre of music Everything else now is just a pale imitation

I love this album. I know that its dance music and not, like, the best album ever or anything, but it really speaks to me. 5/5

That was awesome! I downloaded the rest of their discography and spent the rest of the day listening to it.

I love this album. This reminds me of my brother at university because his flatmates played it constantly then I bought it and played it constantly

Perfection

Voice like Nina Simone at time. Like being in a Fifth Element scene, or in a nightclub DJ’d by Tricky. Tribal / African sound similar to Dead Can Dance. How refreshingly original!!!

This was fantastic background music for a long gaming session today. Checks the two most important boxes for me when it comes to EDM. High energy Not overly repetitive

Some of my favourite albums are albums that I (1) bought in the immediate period after I got my first CD player (1993) (I didn't buy very many CDs, they were too expensive – upwards of £10 a shot, which is a lot of money if you are an undergraduate and working at BHS weekends. I borrowed from the library and dubbed them to cassette) (does anyone use the word 'dub' in this sense any more?) (does anyone remember BHS any more?), and (2) were cheap enough (i.e., with the benefit of hindsight, had probably 'fallen off the back of a lorry') that I was willing to take a chance on them. REM's Automatic for the People was one; Mary J. Blige's What's the 411? was another. And so too this. I vaguely remembered Leftfield's collab with John Lyndon briefly residing in the singles charts a couple of winters earlier, and I did did like the song on the Shallow Grave OST. That was pretty much all I knew about them, but it was enough for me to hand over a fiver to the well dodgy bloke in the Enfield Town Street Market. Summer of 1995. Unusually warm. (We were still talking about aerosols and the ozone layer then; 'global warming' as a catchphrase was still a few years away. I didn't care. I wasn't used to summer sunshine and girls in shorts. England were doing battle against the Windies; on the days I was working, I'd call my sister during my lunch break and ask her to check the scores on Teletext p.341.) Best fiver I spent on anything between 1991 and 1999. It's great because Leftield did things no one else was doing at the time, sustained this over the length of an LP (although, I guess, Afro Left wouldn't be treated so kindly today. Pity that, imho), and did these things very well indeed. Bonus points: Listening to this thrust me back to one of the happier periods of my life. No money but no responsibilities = living fully in the moment. God, I miss that.

Clearly a seminal album of its time. Even more so now with hindsight although it felt pretty important even back then. I could listen to this all day long.

What a freaky coincidence, I’m going to see these guys in a couple of weeks. Which probably gives away my scoring intention. It’s just one of those defining albums from the development of 90s UK electronic music. This one for me kinda takes on the ambient dub style laid down by The Orb, and ramps up the pace with a lot more house and techno, but with the added twist of adding vocals and more traditional song writing structures. The number of different vocalists and styles just add to the albums amazing variety. It just makes it an album to be listened to anywhere, not just on the dance floor. Obvs kudos to Chemical Bros, Death in Vegas etc doing a similar job around the same time in their own styles. I miss those days… 5 stars all the way obvs. Burn Hollywood Burn…..

What a fantastic electronic album from ‘95. This has tracks that will be immediately going on some special playlists. 10/10 perfect for listening as an album, perfect blends between tracks for DJing into a set. Love it!

Nearly 30 years old, this. Which means it's the same distance in time from now as The Beatles' Revolver was from it when it was released. I'm probably over-familiar with the singles but the album tracks stand up today. Melt in particular. Original I always liked, besides having quite the crush on Toni Holliday out of Curve. Space Shanty is excellent, what are you talking about? Sure, some of the production and style is showing its age (shout out to the ragamuffins), but it's still great to listen to. The soundtrack to my uni days for sure. Rhythm and Stealth is probably just as good.

Absolutely brilliant 90's dance album

cool dance dark

love this

All the cool kids listened to this. If you went to a party at someone's house in 95/96 this would be playing. I didn't listen to it, because I was insufferable, and convinced that if there weren't guitars, bass etc, then it wasn't PROPER music. Naturally I was wrong. Whilst this also led to a load of bang-average UK electronica around the same time, this undoubtedly changed the music scene. And John Lydon snarling his way through "Open Up" as well.

Omg what an album!

Great stuff, i get people dont like it, but its good

Though it definitely dips into some experiments that don't always work for me, overall the work solidly hits a vibe for me. It is the style of electronic that i really enjoy if they can get that vibe right and then decorate it to keep it interesting. This was a complete surprise and really really enjoyed it.

I didn't really consider myself a fan of house music, but if this is progressive house, I'm a fan. I loved the album and I've just bought it.

One of the best albums in this genre, revolutionary shit

Awesome. Pure 90s dance music.

This is a top 25, maybe top 10 album for me. It’s so ahead of its time!

My favorite album, ever ever ever

Great album, one I own.

surprisingly good electronic

There's really no album quite like this. There was a move in the 90s for dance music to get more serious. Artists like Underworld and Faithless were making albums that worked equally well in a club or in your bedroom with headphones on. A catchy beat wasn't enough, you needed more complex production, interesting lyrics and engaging art. Leftfield were definitely part of that corner of the music scene, but took it in a different direction. This is a very eclectic collection, covering all different styles of music. It's all over the place but fits together perfectly. Who ever would have thought that getting Johnny Rotten to sing on a techno song would work so well?

I remember a soccer mom in my Spinning class saying to me while we were climbing out of the saddle to Afro Left, “This is really weird – but I Love it!”. While there’s an infinite number of great electronic dance music singles out there, this is, in my books, the greatest dance music album. 1001 has thrown us the top LPs by Leftfield's peers, the Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Daft Punk & Fat Boy Slim and while Leftism may not have a catchy chart-topping hit, the album is much more listenable. Of course, they cheat a bit by mixing in other musical styles, most notable reggae, but House Music is still at the core. And compared to their peers, Leftism still sounds fresh nearly 30 years later. This is the first time ever that my co-judge has asked me to turn up the music at dinner.

I didn't know what to expect as I crawled into bed, slipped the earbuds in and started the album as my bedtime lullaby. I was transported to a cool dance club for 70 minutes and I loved it!

Oh, hell yes! One of the best electronica albums we’ve had I think. A delicious and relaxing groove.

I’m a fan of electronic music and this is a great electronic music album! It’s chill, interesting, smooth, and a great addition to my music library. I love it!

EIIIIIIIII miten voi leftistit tehdä tälläistä musiikkia... 2 tuntnin elektroniikka trance pumputus jarremaista ripottelua möhkäle albumi konsanaan. niin vitun nannaa, ei haittaisi kuunnella tämä albumi vaikka 1001 päivää mutta huomenna herätään ja vastassa 1984 brittiläinen post-punk new wave klassikko jonka takia tapan itseni. kun luette tätä, olen jo kuollut. afro left

Epic! Took me to another time and place for sure!

Love it! I’m not familiar with electronic genres, so this was a revelation!

Damn, where the hell has this been all my life? I was semi-aware of the name Leftfield but I'd never really looked into their work or realised just how much of an influence on electronic they had. I love all things that ooze that mid-90s rave culture, honestly. Unfortunately I was born too late to experience that era first-hand, but the revival of 90s and 00s video game nostalgia as of late (such as those classic/retro "PS1" Jungle playlists suddenly all over YouTube) warms my heart in a great way. Sure enough, a Leftfield B-Side made it into the Wipeout soundtrack, and that happens to be one of my favourite racing game franchises. This is just an amazing journey into a soundscape of electronica, house, dub, trance and all the rest. This is probably wildly enhanced by the 90s British rave trend of being absolutely off your face, but to me it very much holds up without that. I know what I'll soon be seeking out on vinyl, CD or cassette. Favourite: Storm 3000

Album opens with some very sparse synth. A minute and a half in we get some vocals -- sounds like a Gorillaz song (wonder if the same guy). Eventually gives way to a dancey techno beat with some dub influenced samples. Reminds me a little of Shpongle with less DMT. Melt is a pleasant song with some jazzy trumpet warbling above some spacey drum / synth work. I'm enjoying this. Gives way to Song of Life that flips directly into a deep bass line + chant vocal that evokes a sci-fi movie montage. Oh man this song samples the same drumline that Beastie Boys ripped for Looking Down the Barrel Of A Gun (what a fucking jam that is). What a completely different usage here when paired against atmospheric elements rather than the heavy guitar riff that Beastie Boys used. Around the 5 minute mark this just rips into a relentless D&B song. This is peak study / work music; glad to have found it. Original has a whole trip-hop feel to it with the nature of the beat and embedded vocals that rest evenly with the instrumental. Inspection is a jam. Love the dub vocals. Feels like I am living in The Matrix. All around this is a pretty great electronic album. There are a lot of different textures and techniques at play. I found this to be an enjoyable listen end to end. 5/5 will come back.

One of the best albums of the 1990s. I bought this on CD from a record shop on Buxton high street some time in probably 1997, or maybe 1998, so I was a little late to the party, but I got there eventually. Everyone in the 90s knew about Leftfield from the Guinness advert, but their stuff was worth way more than mere popularity. This is an absolute pleasure to listen to again.

Dance album, highly inspired, not fully listened yet but good first few tracks, pretty psychedelic also

Never had heard of Leftfield prior to this. Sweet jams. I love 'ambient' electro.

if I listen at work I feel like a hackerman

Its undoubtedly era defining

So this album is perfect. Every track could have been a single. It’s my 4th favourite of theirs because, well, they’re Radiohead and they did a lot right. Street Spirit is the best closing track by a band that specialises in closing tracks. This whole album is a happy place. 10/5 Immerse your soul in love.

The sound of clubbing in the 90s and with the Chemicals and Underworld part of the 'big 3' of dance music bands making actual albums. As successful as either of the others in making an album that sounded like clubbing while actually being listenable to. Lydon and Halliday the coolest guest vocalists as well.

Great album

Again I don't have a chance to write my essay style review. This is an album I keep coming back to

Dit is top!

What was that? Jamaican electronic dance music? It was great.

Utter classic.

An old favourite. Open Up was always one of those songs that got me on the dance floor. Original is also an old favourite and this album as a whole is great.

Has withstood the test of time

Never heard of it before!! Dope

This took me back! What a groundbreaking album this was. They were true techno pioneers.

A bit of everything

I’ve never heard of this band but really enjoyed their music!

Very cool early house album. Definitely some bumping tracks.

Absolute banger

Its like being in a late night European dance club in a great way.

Overall really enjoyed it - solid beats throughout. 4

I would have hated this, if it wasn't time for lawn mowing

Never heard of this or the group before. This is why I am here! Awesome. This album’s use of drum machines is really setting the tone for, well, everything dance related in the next decade as far as I can tell. Pretty amazing across the board. I would almost go 5, but it’s hard with what is essentially a dj mix with which I was completely unfamiliar previously. Maybe next time around… 4 Boolean: True

I think this is a really great album, something I wouldn't have liked 20 years ago but really appreciate now. The ambient nature of some of the songs, mixed with some orchestral elements, and then the EDM blend together well, I think. The vocals, when there, are well done and not a distraction, generally.

Sounded like a kind of general ambient electro, then we go into reggae territory with the vocals and syncopations. Great reveal! So we've got reggae/ska fused with post 80s electro/dance. What a fantastic combination! Interesting, that caribbean vibe crossed with dance sounds like Macarena towards the end of Release the Pressure More direct African influence in Afro Left - African language and instrumentation, still fused with dance beats. Production is excellent (e.g. Melt) General electro with reggae/african vibes - is this Afrofuturism? Best track - Release the Pressue, Space Shanty, Inspection 4 stars - genuinely complex and well-produced, and the reggae/dance crossover is great as an accessible hook to pull you into the full album

Like most electronica albums, it's a bit too long, but it's rare for this genre to produce such little filler. I love how there's a broad range of styles, but also a core sound that continues throughout the album. The guest vocals threw me off, because that's not normal for techno style albums. Favorite Track: "Melt"

Good mix of electronica. I enjoyed the first half then I feel it fell a little in the middle before finishing strongly. I thought I didn't recognise any of the tracks but the second last one with John Lydon singing I definitely recall. Interestingly not the most popular track on the album: "Burn, Hollywood burn. Take down tinsel town." Can't argue with that! At 6:53 long perhaps a little long but quibbles. Added two tracks to playlists of mine so have to rate that highly. Yes Regga influenced tracks but it doesn't all have to sound the same so some tracks I didn't like as much but overall very happy with this.

Not something I'd typically listen to, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I've always like Original, but for some reason I never listened to the rest of this album. Now I have. I do think this list has way too much 90s Britpop. But I do not think this list has too much UK electronic.

Leftism is techtronica dance pop from Leftfield to all over the place. Great debut, and great idea having guest vocalists. Original and Inspection Check One are perfect examples and the lead tracks. Some of the tracks sound similar and run long by the end of the album, but very listenable. (3.76*s) Made me want to learn how to dance.

Made me wanna start mixing

Solid, love the song with John Lydon.

I much prefer 'Rhythm and stealth' release but this is a classic.

Straight out of the John digweed era of epic trance trance trance. A bit intense but such a good listen. Makes me wanna grow up in that era

Pretty chill and enjoyable, actually.

Great album

House, trance, dance, rave, dub, electronica, techno, whatever you want to call it I liked it. The John Lyndon track 'Open Up' I played on repeat. 'Afro Left' I did not.

I really liked this album and it's vibe. Some of the songs felt a bit long, but the music was on point.

Really neat! Favorite tracks were "Release the Pressure", "Melt", "Original", "Inspection", and "Open Up"!

I would have gotten down to this back in the day.

1. "Original" 2. "Release the Pressure" 3. "Storm 3000"

must listen if you love electronic music

A solid EDM album. The write ups kept saying it was passed over for various accolades by Massive Attack "Dummy", as if this was better. This was good, but Dummy was the better album in my opinion. A lot going on here but it lacked a cohesive album feel. It was more a collection of good tracks.

Def some of the finer chillfi I've encountered, so points for merit. This will serve no purpose for some listeners, so I can't give a 5 in good conscience. Still, pleasantly surprised. This restored a bit of my faith in this exercise - here's one of a small handful of releases I've never even heard of, that has now been added to my Tidal library. 4/5

Wow. Another Electronic Album. What are the chances…

I enjoyed this album. It was great to listen to while I worked.

I had kinda forgotten about this one, but I really enjoyed revisiting it. Like most electronic albums it's a bit too long, but it's rare for electronic acts to produce albums with such little filler. I love how there's a broad range of styles, but also a core sound that continues throughout the album. Good guest vocals too, although would've been nice to see a couple more (tough ask for a debut). I was surprised to see they released a 3rd and 4th album and are still performing. Might have to check out their more recent stuff.

Fairly good album. Diverse sound

Really great! Lots of jams. 4/5

I like this album well enough, it's very danceable. The problem with rating it is, I think I have two different ratings. This would clearly be a 6/5, maybe even 7/5 if I was drunk at the club dancing to this. But I'm far too sober, so it's really more like a 3. So I'm splitting the difference.

I prefer rhythm and stealth

Thought this came out in 2017 for a sec. Ok so this is not at all what I expected. It's something. Very interesting. Very trippy. I don't know what's happening but I'd like to find out. What the fuck. I actually really like this to be honest. It's very interesting. I actually do really like this it's quite dynamic. Big fan of this. Favourite: Melt Least favourite: Release the Pressure

loved this when it first came out and still do

HIGHLIGHTS: MELT, Song of Life, Original, Space Shanty, Storm 3000 8/10

I'm trying to figure out how this album is woke...

EDM?? Not what I was expecting I was very pleasantly surprised!! Some BANGERS on here.

Fantastic early 90s electronica, a breath of fresh wind after I've been forced to listen to 60s Beatles clones for the past week or so. I've heard Original before, but never listened to the full album before, definitely was worth it :)

Cool progressive housey ethno techno beats to study/relax to. Some nice Macarena vibes towards the end of Drop The Pressure. Bit of dancehall on Inspection (Check One) that paved the way for acts like Major Lazer. Some cool vocal cuts with the Portisheady Original (so not that original I guess) and John Lydon bleats it up good like a devil goat on evil flamey temple raver Open Up. A solid 4 stars from your humble friend o’ electronica.

vaI love albums like this. I wish there was more albums like this in the list: experimental, unapologetic, sonically interesting, risky. Leftfield obviously draws a lot from its electronic contemporaries - one part dub, two parts EDM, three parts house, five parts Aphex - and it feels very spacious. These sorts of albums, all self-indulgent acid loops in the CD era, struggle to fit in in a context where you're not munted and sweaty, but it's pretty sweet. I dunno. There's just something so charming about the 808 closed hi-hat that I can't hate. Perhaps the biggest compliment I can give this album is that I expect to listen to it again, which in a world of an-album-a-day is quite the celebration. How ironic that the whole genre, this big beat-y acid-wash TB-303 sound, that was so forward-pointing before the turn of the millennium now comes across as quaint. An echo of the last vestiges of life before the internet and electronic production became de-facto corners of everyday life. You can picture this playing off some PSX demo disc somewhere, watching looping gameplay videos of Wipeout and Gran Turismo. Whatever happened to that optimistic futurism? Now our speculations of what is to come is more Black Mirror. fav tracks: Melt, Original, Song of Life, Storm 3000

Fun regae and techno vibes

Enjoyable.

Original

Pretty cool album. I thought the first song was going to turn into the macarena for a minute.

This is awesome. More stuff like this pls

One of the better electronic albums in this list - enjoyed it quite a bit.

Really good actually!

Perfect! Nice dancing rhythm.

I haven't listened to this in years. Was expexting it to sound dated but sstabds up surprisibgly well

This is an EDM album, but not aggressive. There are some vocals, including John Lydon the singer from PIL & Sex Pistols. It's an interesting album. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs Original Open Up

Mesmerizing EDM. Two beats in particular stand out “Song of Life” and “Inspection”

Release The Pressure and listen to this Space Shanty.

Pretty cool, actually. Did not like everything though. Stand-outs - Original - Black Flute - Space Shanty

Thoroughly enjoyed this album. Despite a couple songs feeling a bit long, there were some really interesting beats and rhythms that I couldn't help engaging with. 7/10

++: Afro-Left, Song of Life, Black Flute, Space Shanty, Open Up +: Melt, Inspection (Check One), Storm 3000 +-: Release the Pressure, Original, 21st Century Poem 7,9/10

Cool progressive house, a rare find on this list

I really liked this, but then again, I have always liked electronic music, and eventually, techno and other EDM styles. I thought the appearance of John Lydon was pretty amusing.

wasn't sure how I'd feel going in but really grooved with this!

Good low key trance edm

Old school smooth techno vibe

its some grungy dance stuff. I like it, but I don't know if I would be able to spot it in a crowd.

Leftfield’s debut is almost a compilation, considering the number of tracks featured that had been previously released as singles. Still, plenty of combos have released multiple singles from albums, so no crime doing it the other way round. So, Leftism. It’s a bit of a monster - confident and completely lacking in manners. There’s no knocking first, it kicks the door off the hinges, takes a massive shit in the shower and then raids the fridge. Leftfield makes electronic music like it’s looking for a punch-up. This record just sounds big and nasty, and excretes bad attitude. The beats are insistent and unapologetic as dub collides with paranoia and rancorous thoughts. Vocalists – including John Lydon and Toni Halliday – bear witness or rant and rave like chippie arrestees on the way to the van. It’s probably illegal somewhere. 8/10

Really enjoyed this one

So many fucking awesome albums lately. Couldn’t find a chat, so I’m just throwing this out there. Replies welcome, silence equally fine. My old rating system was: 5 – great 4 – good 3 – OK 2 – no good 1 – shit But that didn’t really make sense, since this is meant to be the top 1001 albums — so a 3 shouldn’t just be “OK”. So here’s my new rating system: 5 – heaven 4 – great 3 – good 2 – OK 1 – no good / shit I’ve re-rated all the albums accordingly. How do you rate them?

I went in completely blink and didn't know what genre, decade or type of album I was getting. Very nicely surprised! Leftism is an electronic music album from 1995 that has huge influence. Sounded like a direct line to many of the electronic acts I've seen like Polo & Pan, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Knife Party and more. Sasha & Digweed featured Leftfield in one of their famous Renaissance albums (first 2 tracks too). This was very enjoyable and you can see the influence up and down electronic music.

Solid ambient and dance, needs more listens

This is a great album of electronic or progressive house with dub influence but it's more than that. It's not as monotonous as you would expect since some songs have various singers (i.e John Lydon).

In the early 2000s, a dear friend whom I hadn't seen for years introduced me to this band. I was thrilled and bought this album, among others. I listened to it so often that I eventually got tired of it. My enthusiasm isn't quite as great now, but it's nice to listen to the album again. 4/5

Work music supreme

I signed up for this site hoping to uncover new music and artists, and honestly, I’d been pretty disappointed, until now. I’d never heard of this band or their album before, but I absolutely loved it. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, John Lydon’s unmistakable voice kicked in. This is hands-down my favorite discovery so far.

Very eclectic and cool Seems to span dub and reggae, house, techno, drum and bass elements. The instrumental stuff is awesome. Some of the vocal stuff looses me just slightly

Vocals generally didn't connect with me as much as the music, but that could change through multiple listens.

Leftism is getting a low 4 from me, great full length dance album that is progressive in its albumness and covers a lot of ground, some absolute tunes here that would sound great mixed into techno and trance sets to this day and the mix sounds amazing in headphones, very engaging

Enjoyed it.

Great grooves, chilling and pumping somehow at the same time.

Didn't know anything about them. Fun Afropop mixed with EDM. It got a little repetitive with songs dragging on for 7 minutes...but overall a nice listen.

Banger track. Its style reminds of the Matrix series. 4.3/5

The house music label made me very suspicious of this one, plus it’s way out of my boomer demographic. I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, it’s very danceable but, to my mind, has many ambient attributes. A great album to play on buds while cleaning house! 4 stars!

Into it

Enjoyed this. Somewhere between chill and upbeat, but I used it as background music while doing other things.

I had never even seen the cover of this album, no recognition whatsoever. My first thought was, "Is that a white light HAL 9000 eye inside of a shark jaw"? I guessed that this was some kind of progressive metal. No matter how good this record is, if it's prog metal, it might have easily slipped through the cracks during the mid-'90s grunge/alternative obsession. Turns out, I was wrong. I don't know the specific term for it, but I'd call the music hard or deep house. It's fair that some people find that music repetitive or even obnoxious, but have an affinity for it, left over from the club nights and Beyond raves at the Millennium Center. Raves used to be dark, dirty affairs in warehouses with people dancing in the middle of the room and tweaking on the sides. They were a far cry from the colorful festivals of today. This album contains some of the best-executed music in that genre that I've ever heard. It has an exciting, celebratory vibe that had me dancing around the living room like no one was watching. Thankfully, no one was. There is both continuity and variety here, much like a great DJ set.. I still know nothing about the origins of this record. I don't know anything about Leftfield, and I still think the album cover is poorly designed. But this music rocks and is a lot of fun. Four stars.

Bien. Électro à souhait

This was a really good electronic album with some singing which mixed things up

Great dance music.

Fresh change from all the 70s-80s guitar solos. Iconic dance music, sound of a different generation. Will have lost relevance for some but even though it was never my scene I enjoyed this one a lot.

Added this to my Coding playlist

Pretty good and a lot of house music on this list sucks so I like that

They had woke albums in the 90s smh my head. I didn’t expect to enjoy this this much. I’m generally not a fan of electronic music. It very rarely hits the vibe I’m looking for, but this one did just that. This album is 70 minutes long, but it’s so tightly packed with catchy beats and satisfying sound design that it is still engaging even towards the end. And this atmosphere that somehow feels tribal and futuristic and the same time is so nice. Yeah, great album, very enjoyable.

I didn't love how it started, but there were a couple of songs (like Afro Left and Space Shanty) that really vibed with me. This is the first electronic music album I've gotten too, and considering how much of the music I normally listen to derives from electronic music, I think it's important to remark on its legacy. There are a lot of techniques used in this album that I still hear very often. Overall an enjoyable listen, though some songs bothered me a little more.

Brilliant album.

I needed to be high to truly enjoy this, but I get where it’s coming from.

I'm not overly familiar with Leftfield, apart from tracks on various movies, and hadn't heard this album before. It's very good, but would probably need more familiar to give it a 5.

Excellent

Grew on me more and more. 4.

A bit repetitive with the sound effects but it was pretty fun

Interesting house album

Fantastic album have listened to it many times

4- Stars (10/15)

Good flow. Enjoyable songs. Would listen to again.

Thought I would hate it but rather liked it. Kinda reminded me of the music they would play in 90s laser tag places

Really, really good.

This is a seriously good album that passed me by originally. Beautiful beats and layers, genre melding and being way ahead of its time in many ways. It reminded me of so many albums that followed it

Don’t know why everybody’s complaining about this one – it’s actually pretty good! Sure, it’s not exactly the kind of album that’ll make you want to dust off your disco shoes, but it works as a solid introduction to EDM in general because it blends – and bends – so many different genres: drum & bass (Storm 3000), tribal (Space Shanty), ambient (Melt), among others.

Son of a bitch, I’ve been broken! I spent the hour while this album played bouncing around as I worked in the office today. I literally caught myself dancing in my seat more than once and couldn’t believe I was genuinely into the music.

It was really good and had different electronic and R&B aspects to it. It was a slow start but a glorious ending.

bouncing . dynamic. layered. nicely weird and haunting in places

Rather got into this

Jungle 7/10

Relaxt kabbelende housemuziek.

Got the CD for my 18th birthday so have great memories of this album and that year. It does unfortunately sound a bit dated and sterile now - unlike say Underworld/ Orbital albums from same era that still bang today. As per other comments its dance music as chosen by someone who does not know dance music. I agree with Leftfields comments per the wikipedia that the album does not really hang together as tempo varies greatly between the tunes. Favourites Black Flute / Space Shanty. It should be a 3 but will give it a 4 for nostalgia.

I don't find it clinical as some Aphex Twin. I find it warm; it's like rave music but for vinyl. There's always a thread of melody running through - vocals, or dub bass, or synth. And there's a fusion of style that really works well, invokes tribal beats and transports you around the world. Mystical.

I absolutely adore the Brit Beeps and Bloops from this era but Leftism is just one notch behind Underworld, The Orb and Orbital for me. Keep in mind that this is the opinion of somebody who's never taken a drug harder than caffeine, though.

Elektronisk musik som funkar bra. Träffar rätt för mig. Sången är det sämsta dock. Men grymt överlag.

4 stars

Obviously, this us beautifully produced. And damn does it have a ton of bangers. But this felt like an eternal album. Just soooo fucking longggggg. I have no clue why I give Roni Size / Reprazent the benefit of the doubt but no other electronic act gets that. Oh well. Pretty great album, but not quite a 5 for me

not bad for dance music

Some nice songs. Tasty choices. Not my genre though and it feels long.

Very good

This was very enjoyable

"Leftism" is the debut studio album by English electronic music duo Leftfield. The Wiki-listed genre is progressive house although critics have said they use many other musical styles. I'd agree there. The album is a mixture of new tracks along with reworked versions of previous singles. Leftfield is Neil Barnes (production, keyboards, guitar, drum programming) and Paul Daley (production, keyboards, mixing). The album was well-received critically and hit #3 on the UK charts. A slow dreamy synth opens the fifth-album single "Release the Pressure." Earl Daley on vocals with a Jamaican accent stressing peace and unity. A bubbly beat changes to a dance beat. A previously-released single "Song of Life" is reworked. An ambient vibe eventually goes dance. Good song. Yankees Rupkina on guest vocals. Toni Halliday from the Curve takes over lead vocals "Original." A spacey synth with a bass beat. Outer space sounds. And bam! The beat kicks in and we're definitely in the house music category. The one and only John Lydon takes over the vocal helm on "Open Up." Hard synths and beats that work really with really well Lydon's voice as he screams "Burn Hollywood! Hollywood Burn!" This is more industrial than anything. I'd agree with the critics that this is a lot more than just house music; I heard ambient, hip hop, dance, trip hop, disco and industrial. And, I'm particularly weak in identifying those dance-category genres. Lots of creativity by the duo with the beats, synth sounds and guest singers. This album was nominated for the UK Mercury Prize in 1995 (lost to Portishead's "Dummy."). I can see why; it's a strong album and one that kept my attention.

A way better record than expected! This sound is en vogue again and Leftfield did a good job with Leftism.

I love the house. First 2 tracks had me feeling giddy

this was awesome as fuck but basically I couldn't summarize it better than the top review on rateyourmusic Weed + Leftism = Divinity.

Enjoyed the beats. Not sure how many times I'll relisten to it but still some good tunes to start the day

This was a surprise. Obviously only new Born Slippy. This was consistently banging and uplifting and great to work to. For the whole album.

I love this era of electronic music and this album definitely belongs on the list. Every bit of it is infused with joy.

Leftism is a landmark in 90s electronic music—dark, pulsating, and built for both headphones and dancefloors. It blends house, dub, trance, and tribal rhythms into a sprawling, atmospheric journey that feels mechanical and human all at once. Tracks like Release the Pressure, Open Up, and Song of Life show just how wide Leftfield’s range is, while keeping the groove locked in tight. It’s a little long in places, and not every track hits with the same impact, but the overall vibe is immersive and ahead of its time. Even now, it sounds like the blueprint for much of what followed in progressive and big beat electronica. Not perfect, but a bold, bass-heavy classic that still holds up.

House classic

awesome

damn I forgot to save my notes whatever this was some real wonky house goodness that's all I really have to say

I saw this was a 90s electronica album and prepared for the worst, but was pleasantly surprised after listening to it. This album did a great job of standing out from your typical repetitive, mundane electronica from the times. The vocals on some songs kept the air fresh and the tempo changes from track to track were necessary. It kept me interested (although there were some dull moments) for most part and I largely enjoyed what I was listening to. Didn't mind the length too much, either. Overall, a good chill album to bump.

Very good. Didn't realise Original was by them. Only not a 5 become the opening track reminded me of The Macarena. Probably not their fault!

Good background noise.

I expected this to be great, and it was.

Wasn't into this at first, but turned out to be an excellent electronic / dance album. Varied and interesting a start contrast to some of the other Bristish 90s electronic on this list

Een elektronisch album! Heel vet! super rare, trippy shit! FAVO: Release the pressure, Afro Left, Original, Black Flute, Space Shanty,

This album really surprised me. It’s the kind of dance music that you tend to hear in travelling fun fairs, which is usually far from my kind of music. However, I found myself being hooked throughout this album, which my head bopping away from front to back. I couldn’t really tell you what is different about this when compared to other dance albums (to be more specific, I want to say it’s house music but I don’t actually know). regardless though, this is a bop. Give it a listen.

Music to get lost in the sauce.

3.5 stars... Quite interesting album. Works well as background music but also weird enough that you kind of feel like listening to it more actively

Good dance music, good work music. Energetic and upbeat but not intrusive. Listened twice.

Sounded great. Might listen again later

I've been aware of this for ages but never really given it a full run through. It's alright, bits of tracks are cool but there's no big draw for me.

Cracking! Tremendous beats throughout and a couple of excellent collaborations. Recommended!

Virtually no lyrics but still good to listen to....

Holds up super well

Groovy, fun, ‘90s big beat dance. Not every single moment is riveting, but enjoyable as a whole piece.

Great album and definitely one the influential releases of its time.

you know, i initially rated this a 3 and i was only loving one song, melt. but then time passed and a friend of mine introduced me to aphex twin and i got hooked. and then i listened to a few other EDM albums. i knew then i wanted to revisit this album and see how my mind has changed with my new found love for EDM. and i gotta say, i am loving this. it was the perfect get chores done music. i will say it’s pretty much a “get things done to” album, if i were to purely listen to it and not do anything i would probably get tired fairly quickly as it is over an hour long. but i am increasing my rating to a 4 because it does slap.

A great dance record. Love the sound of 90s dance

Not bad. Feels like you're in the matrix.

What an incredible first three minutes. Bit mixed thereafter, but still worth the four stars.

A record truly ahead of its time, and, in my opionion, one of the cornerstones of the electronic music of early 2000s.

Really liked it

Enjoyed this!

This is more like it! I hear the beginnings of nine inch nails in here, early club techno. Lots of good stuff here. I need to listen to it more, but this is one I can actually listen to again. My rating: 4/5, based on one listen. I also want to check out other albums in their catalog.

I enjoyed this electronic album much more than most of what I've gotten on this list. For some reason, it was far more listenable. In fact, some of the songs were quite inspiring. Melt, in particular, is beautiful. Sounds straight out of the game Tunic and pulls hard on 90s nostalgia. I also liked Afro Left. Overall, this bum is more subdued than it's peers and as a result, way nicer than expected.

A genre-jumping, speaker-bumping house mosaic that deftly builds upon its electronic foundation with diverse sounds and guest vocalists, creating a dynamic yet unified sonic experience.

Really cool house album

Fantastic dance/electronica, a lot of it with a steady house beat. Wow, “Afro Left” is a banger!! It’s really hitting for me right now but I’d also love to be sweating it up on a packed dance floor late at night listening to this. There are a lot of styles from around the world fused into some of these tracks. It’s really well done. Very cool album worth replaying soon.

Unique and beautiful, but a bit repetitive

Got a lot of work done w this one on.

Fun, upbeat techno. Kind of gets lost in the background for me, but that can be a good thing on occasion.

Cool to hear

It's not all my bag but a lot of this scratches that 90s electronic music itch. The keyboards create a wonderful atmosphere in tracks like Melt and Song of Life. It's all a great mix of prog house, trip hop and tribal with plenty of acid tinged synths. Some of the drums go hard too - lots of bangers in the middle part of the album. Open Up is still a big track with that rumbling bassline. This is absolutely a classic in the EDM world, but not sure it reached the mainstream anywhere else (outside the UK?). Still very good.

Albumi #131, 11.12.2024 Leftfieldin debyyttialbumi vuodelta 1995. Albumin genreä on luonnehdittu progressiiviseksi houseksi. Albumi on mainio ajankuva ja pääosin ihan mielekästä kuunneltavaa.

Wild beats, fresh grooves, unlimited creativity

This is just a really fun techno album. It's solid the whole way through without getting boring. Just the right amount of beeps and boops 4/5

Thoroughly entertaining dance album.

I've never heard this before (I tend to avoid dance music) but I really enjoyed it.

Pretty solid instrumental album.

I really dig trance/edm and this album was incredibly enjoyable. some of the tracks I couldn't help but here the Buck Bumble thing but so many were just head bobbin body swayin good times.

Brought back good memories.

Dated, trendy, electronic

4/5. A well-balanced electronic atmospheric and dance album, implementing a lot of ambience to start most of their songs and then using an infectious beat to drive the song to the end. It's a little formulaic but it's not a bad thing. These songs sound so good and are fun to listen to, each one sounds unique enough for me to tell the difference to which one I am listening to. There are some that overstay their welcome with the length that they are but it's very welcome for most of them. I did lose focus near the last few songs it was good overall. Best Song: Original, Melt, Release The Pressure

Hyvää tunnelmointia uskomattoman dänkin levykannen takana :D 4/5

This was a nice surprise. Never heard of this group before so I came in with no expectations or presumptions. Great to listen to while working.

While I never listened to this before, this style brings back all the memories of grinding in MMOs for hours at a time. Great music to get shit done!

Classic

Electronic music - definitely got my head bopping!
