This is pretty annoyingly repetitive for a majority of the album. Might be good "I need to lock in and focus" music, but otherwise, I would definitely not intentionally listen to this again. (2)

Looking back, there is no telling how large a role this album title played in my tendency to confuse the Chemical Brothers with the Dust Brothers. And I typed that sentence before reading their Wikipedia page and learning that their original name actually WAS the Dust Brothers! (My knowledge of this entire genre is obviously quite lacking. Which is a little surprising given my love for the Beasties and Beck.) This music reminds me of the scores of every movie from the late '90s. The repeating noise in "Song to the Siren" is EXTREMELY annoying. And then that transitions into the slightly-less-annoying repeating drone in "Three Little Birdies Down Beats." I don't think this music is intended to be listened to in the morning at your desk while working. Much like most of the genre, this album does nothing for me. It sounds incomplete.
I had been putting off listening to “Dig your own hole” until I got this one a week later, so I decided to listen to both twice and do a double review. It is definitely not made for a concentrated listening experience, so I did a bunch of work while I listened. The more I heard, the more I started to enjoy it actually - buuut, I think it’s because I just started to not expect anything. I get how this might have sounded somewhat revolutionary once, but their sound is just so dated in my opinion. The harder stuff just sound like the soundtrack to a mediocre action film, and every time there’s an interesting sound or a lead of any sort, it’s mixed way in the back. I do enjoy the samples though, and the softer and more psychedelic stuff is better on these albums. I have the third album a try to, and generally enjoyed it more. But this is not really for me. It’s just fine, occasionally interesting, but never really moving. I guess if I heard this really loudly in the middle of a bad dj set, I would really dig it, but eh. The second is slightly better I guess 4/10

Not my thing. I definitely get what’s going on here. And I didn’t find it unlistenable but it’s not my cup of tea. And that’s okay! I gave it a second chance, also, but just wasn’t feeling it

It has beats and things, so I guess it qualifies as music. I was a chemistry major, and these chemical brothers just gave me a test I just couldn't take, even if I wanted to. ⭐⭐

No. Just no. This is utterly unappealing.
It's techno and it's heavy on beats and is extremely monotonous. By ~half way into the album I found myself wishing it was over. There were occasional tracks that were more song-like and that were a welcome break (e.g. Life is Sweet) but on the whole it's not my thing.
As a soundtrack for a racing video game: 5 stars As an album in itself: 2 stars.

This flip flopped between kinda cool and incredibly annoying. Perhaps I just wasn't in the mood. 4/10
Like the other Chemical Brothers album I heard a while back, this one sounds exciting at first but can't really keep it up. Maybe if I were at the club instead of at work...
Phew! The nineties were pretty exhausting. The Chemical Brothers' debut album, "Exit Planet Dust", is quite monotonous. While it's certainly hypnotic and exhilarating in a club, at home on the couch 30 years after its release, it's just tiring synthetic minimalist rhythms. It's not bad — I understand why this sound became so important — but looking back, it simply reflects the hustle and bustle, excitement and hedonism of the time.
Compared to their other albums, these are some pretty tame and boring beats. And why is a live track on this album? This sht is all electronic anyways. Why not just rerecord it?
Checked back on getting this album to see what I wrote about their other album on the list, Dig You Own Hole. Turns out by sheer coincidence that it was exactly one year and one day since that occurred. But the same applies to this latest album and there’s little I can add to this selection. To save myself time I copy and paste last years comments to today as that tells you all you need to know how I view this record:- By chance (or not?) it’s Glastonbury weekend (2026 edit - well not quite as it’s a fallow year but would have been if not) and my only experience of the Chemical Brothers is seeing them there on the TV. Image that sticks out are those goggles they wear projecting beam on light from their eyes. Looks good and suits the music. Glastonbury all well and good but in the cold light of day and playing this album I do not get the same vibe. From what I can gather the music is just one part of the Chemical Brothers experience. Live there is lots of artistic visions and movement going on to accompany the music. Take that away and rather like the Riverdance album without the dancing you only get half what you paid for. 2/5 28/6/25 (2026 edit - 29/6/26)

Some songs were really cool. Others annoyed me enough to where I had to skip halfway through. I simply can’t give a high rating to this album because of that, unfortunately
This album gave me a bit of trouble and I'm not even sure why! On paper it's supposed to be right up my alley. I hear elements of other electronic music I adore, such as some Homework-type harsh beats and even some trippy hoppy rhythms. Despite all of that, I found this listen pretty tedious by the end of it. Not big on the big beat unfortunately! Standout: One Too Many Mornings
i've started to listen to electronic music much more for a few months and there are a couple of songs of the chemical brothers that i saved but i guess i'm still not much into this genre... or maybe this album is really boring.

Still a little too repetitive and noisy for my tastes. Couldn't really discern many differences between the tracks. I quite like the album with Galvanize on it. Kind of cool that they formed in Manchester, but I prefer Elbow.

This is well made, but I found it pretty tedious.

First time listening to The Chemical Brothers. The album starts really good but I couldn't really tell you what song was what. Quite the opposite to other albums like Justice and The XX which are similar sounding albums but have tracks that don't almost completely blend together. This album is fine. It's good. I can put it on in the background. Do some LSD and watch The Matrix. This is good electronic psychedelic music but I just need a little more with this type of music. Great DJ music I bet but my arse is sitting down at a desk. Highlight of the album, could be any of the tracks really. Chico's Groove, if I had to choose a favourite. Alive Alone, because it has vocals. Overall, good but not great for my tastes. I'd much prefer something along the lines of Justice. T3: Leave Home, Alive Alone, Chico's Groove
Fun electronic music album with the typical sounds and instrumentation with the addition of acoustic instruments and very noticeable audio effects that really fit in well with the music.

Like most of the electronic music on this list, I think this would be cool at a club, rave or maybe if you’re on drugs. I don't know. It's not my jam otherwise.

Electronic, industrial techno is not my thing. I didn't dislike this as much as The Prodigy, but it was not all that much more enjoyable. Sort of interesting mix of sounds - techno with record scratches and what I can only describe as variations on a dial up modem.

Man I was relieved when that was over. Realised I'd been listening to a whole song with the radio also playing and had no idea. Shares very little of the melody or good vocal hooks that their later music has. Alive Alone a decent example of things to come for them though.
Best Song: Leave Home This would fall under, "one song is plenty." As someone around in 1995, when this came out, I didn't know anyone who ever listened to them but my neighbor in college. And, he did because he liked to test out his sound system. Sit down children, grandpa has a story to tell you about the 90s. It was a glorious time when, if you wanted a nice sound system, you need to have huge speakers and a subwoofer with an EQ and a receiver. We didn't have sound bars blu-tooth speakers, we had things that would rattle walls and make the neighbors wish for your death. Anyway, maybe if I were on molly at a rave this would be ok but, since I am 51, the likelihood of this happening is very slim. I'm sure many a meth head were conceived to this repetitive, annoying music. 2/5.

Just an under average album. Electronic music has came a long way since this and it’s just so basic. Yes they did hit with a few songs but mostly this was just basic electronica. I feel the same way with discovery daft punk 4.7/10

No favorite song
"Leave Home" is a great opener, and I think it hits a decent groove in the second half of the album as well. "Chico's Groove" and "One Too Many Mornings" both change things up nicely with slightly chiller soundscapes, "Playground for a Wedgeless Firm" has a cool crime scene soundtrack vibe, and as a fan of Beth Orton, her feature on "Alive Alone" was a nice surprise. Unfortunately, tracks 2-6 drag it down quite a bit for me, lending to a bit of that "trapped at a party I can't escape" feeling. 2.5/5

2 stars As usual, just blended together. I read all these things about these different types of electronic/techno/house music describing different genres and such, and when I listen I just hear the same stuff. I didn’t hate it. There were some pleasant moments on the 2nd half. But I won’t care enough to revisit this.
It all kind of bleeds together as one song but not in a cool prog rock way but because I literally can't differentiate between individual songs cause it all sounds the same. I'll give it 2 stars because unlike most of these shitty techno albums I get its like 45 minutes minutes instead of 75.

Jeg er ikke så fan av Matrix-musikk, merker jeg. "One Too Many Mornings" minner litt om Air, som jeg liker, men det meste med denne plata liker jeg altså ikke.
Eh, it was ok. No me movió mucho pero era esperable porque es mostly instrumental. Hay un tema en particular que me re llevó back a las épocas de mi infancia jugando FIFA, y no sé por qué porque googlee y parece no haber tenido ningun tema ahi. Pero bueno, osea es eso, solo upbeat musica electronica que no me movió un montón pero tampoco me disgustó.

Pioneer, sure, I’ll give them that but nowhere near the brutal Dig Your Own Hole, which came later and still stands as their masterpiece (at least for me). This one drags a bit. At a time when Prodigy were already blowing club techno off the map, this feels less sharp, less dangerous. Still, it absolutely matters in that early electro-rock shift, and you can hear the blueprint forming. Do I ever feel like putting it back on? Not really. It’s been off my playlist for years and it’s staying there.
Why do we need yet another electronica album on this list. Not important or essential in any way.

Overall Rating - 2.41/5 (4.82/10). I had a very difficult time telling where one track ended and the next began. I just don't like most electronica.

Electronic is the only genre where you can take a 5 to 10 second musical idea and stretch it out to five minutes and everyone thinks you’re a genius
Boring. Occasionally bits pique my interest but it never seems to go anywhere other than slight variations of the same thing. Dance music like this is only worthwhile if there's a cool live show to go with it and you are on it. Otherwise it's just repetitive dullness when it's an album. Fine as background music I suppose but that's about it. Cool album cover though.

Very repetitive album. Each individual song felt too long. I'm not a fan of repeating noises so this album was not my taste. These songs feel like the "filler" transition songs that a dj would use for 20 seconds.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but this kind of music sucks. It sounds like music from a sci-fi movie, and not a good one. I can respect the craft that went into making it but I certainly wouldn't put it anywhere in this list.

A decent house music band, but once again I don’t find anything special about the album of the day. The beats are good and there is use of some synthesized effects that work with the tracks, but overall it’s just “blah” for me on this one.

Some nice grooves but essentially a one trick pony. The songs run into each other and you can barely distinguish one from another. Hard to call them musicians when they don’t play any instruments. They’re essentially DJ’s.

Electronic music has never been my jam. Its good for being in a club or something, but you dont sit down and listen to it like a regular record.
Listening to 2 90s electronic albums back to back with this and LTJ Bukem was certainly a move...just not a very good one. After 3 hours of 90s noises I feel like I have one of those brain slugs from Futurama on my head. Much worse than their other album we had.

7 a.m. on a Sunday morning immediately after listening to W.A. Mozart's 'Missa brevis in D Minor, K. 65' was possibly not the best time to listen to this. This probably works very well at a rave. It does nothing at all for me outside of that context. It gets my 'alright if you like that sort of thing...' default of 2/5.

This was ok but I didn’t love it
The thing is, I've just never really liked Big Beat. Give me proper techno, give me IDM, give me cut up sample jazz or Jungle/DnB. Or, if you must, give me the madness of The Prodigy. But this? Leaves me utterly cold. I wasn't crazy about this stuff then, and I'm surely not now. Aged like milk music for racing videogames (literally, here). And no, the last tracks just step on the brakes; that doesn't make them better. I didn't find this as obnoxious as Fatboy Slim's "You've Come a Long Way, Baby" but it's not far off.
Repetitive AF. I guess if you like techno/electronic it might be appealing, some of it has a nice groove.
Not really my genre. I can appreciate what is being done here and some elements I enjoyed, but ultimately will not revisit.

This reminds me of like video game music, I just feel like I'm at a menu or loading screen or something as I listen lol. Was honestly super great for work and made it easier for me to lock in and stay focused, but not necessarily anything I would want to listen to casually and not sure if I'd go back personally.
The album had a movie soundtrack feel to me. I thought they did a good job of adding/changing a layer right as the phrase was about to repeat too many times. Not something I would listen to again but I could appreciate it as a basis for the genre.

Ale no nie jestem w stanie dać więcej niż 4/10, bo męczyłam się bardzo o wręcz zmusiłam się, by ją skończyć. Nie lubię elektroniki no.
I really liked Let Forever Be so I was expecting to like this album, but it's was just too repetitive.

Couldn’t get into it
I think this album was a little too annoying for me. For most of it, it is just the same beat blasted over and over again. It probably sounds a lot better in a club or something, but when I'm home and listening to this, it just feels weird to me. But if I'm being honest, EDM, House, or club music is not something I really like or care for. In conclusion, I found it to be really repetitive and just annoying to listen to after a while. Again, almost every song is just the same beat looped over and over again for five minutes. It's just confusing to me that they turned this into a whole studio album. Favorite Tracks: Leave Home, One Too Many Mornings Rating: 2/5

Okish electronic 90s album. I just miss any of the stand-out Chemical Brothers hits. Good to listen to while working and the final track "Alive Alone" was my favourite. That track felt more like trip-hop e.g Massive attack or Portishead.
Didn’t leave much of an impression
Pretty similar beats for the six song medley to start, improved as it progressed. Meditative background music for monotonous drive across Mojave Desert, looking for sand people or storm troopers to attack. L = (2.0*s) Movie score for interplanetary Star Wars film. J = (2.4*s) Didn’t know these brothers are Brits, we’ll be hearing them again.

Kickstarted a whole new era in ad music for cellphone plans, frozen yoghurt chains, gyms, and eco-friendly detergent commercials. Not that bad, not that good. Just… there.
I used to listen to a fair amount of this genre, so revisiting feels a bit surreal. The repetition doesn’t hit the same for me now and I don’t connect with it like I once did. Still, I remember how fresh and exciting it felt at the time, and it’s clear how much it influenced what came after. “One Too Many Mornings” still stands out and holds up beautifully. And “Life Is Sweet” delivers with that gritty, dirty beat that gives it real texture.
I just don’t like this type of music. At least this was better then the previous album of 90’s Gap background music.
First few tracks are ok then it starts getting boring. They seemed to only have a few ideas.

This is just background music. And if you pay too much attention you’ll go insane because it is just too damn repetitive. They didn’t even come back with a block rockin beat! Now I’m gonna go take the blue pill (or was it the red one) and go king du some agents.

What a terribly boring album. It starts off quite okay with the first two tracks, then it becomes just a pile of bleep bleep without any music. 'Chico's groove' is once again rather listenable. But that's not enough. Really really boring.

Honestly? I have neither the knowledge or taste to weigh in on an electronica/techno album or artist. I can appreciate it not being another tired house music album, but it honestly didn't do anything for me all. Some of the tracks are fine, some of them overstay their welcome (Chemical Beats for example just goes on for far too long without enough variety).
I was 2 minutes into a track from another band before I realized the album was over and another was autoplaying. That is to say it all sounded the same and I didn’t care at all.

This is the soundtrack to a Bourne movie. This is every action scene in the 90s. it's fine in those contexts, but I'm not a techno guy so I don't enjoy this on it's own. I like ranch dressing, I don't eat it by the spoonful.

When I was in college about ten years after this album came out there was a dude on campus that everyone knew as "Techno Guy" who would sit outside the student union building all day blasting loud techno from a giant boom box and doing these weird sort of robotic dances. He also wore a newsie hat and I don't know if he ever went to class because he was always there. I'm pretty sure this was one of his go to album. And like Techno Guy, this album was sort of interesting for about two minutes then just got annoying and I wanted it to go away. I will say that this album isn't nearly as bad as a lot of the electronic music that's out there. So an extra star for that I guess. 2/5
Alot of sounds. Kinda rave-y. Few decent songs, probably nothing i would actually listen in my own time. Did not hate it but did not really like either. The best song was 'One Too Many Mornings'

In sequence the second album with skill - testing of programming drum computers and loop recorders. It starts to get boaring.

An ok electronic album in my eyes. No song really pulled me in but no song sounded really bad either. Very middle of the road for me

What in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater menu music was that? Can't ever think of a time I'd want to listen to it again but I still didn't hate it. Could have been a single song and I wouldn't have noticed a difference.
This is pretty lame stuff. Some kind of techno-rap or some shit. Like listening to video game music. Probably an apt musical metaphor for 20th century grindstone existence, I guess. Musically it pretty much sucks.

I would suppose that if I was 23 years old trippin on X and surrounded by barely dressed 23 year old women grooving out at an EDM festival - I would totally dig this. But instead I’m 59 and prefer shrooms and jam bands.

Really really really really boring
This is very much the product of its time, it doesn't hold up and although it still sounds fine, it is very forgettable.
Solid background music, nothing more, nothing less.
Like a lot of electronic music, this is sonically interesting, but compositionally lacking. While I don't know much about this genre, I do vividly remember the fervor for outfits like the Chemical Brothers and the Orb, and I especially recall that people whose taste I respected enjoyed them. Even though this isn't the genre for me, that's worth a star or two. However, it is worth noting that the Chemical Brothers always rise to the occasion when collaborating with other artists on more straight-forward rock-and-pop songs. Alive Alone, featuring Beth Orton, stands out in this regard, harkening to other outstanding collabs with Orton as well as each of the Gallagher brothers. Unfortunately, the reimagining of Song of the Siren is confusing to the point of irritation. 2.5/5

I actually really like the chemical brothers. But I do not like this album. It’s much more frenetic and even aggressive than the trippy, chill beats that I know come later in their discography.
De to første sange er rimelig interessante, da de i deres opbygning udvikler sig mere og bruger flere virkemidler end hvad jeg normalt kender fra genren. Det er svært ikke at sammenligne med de albums vi har haft fra Prodigy og Daft Punk. Her syntes jeg umiddelbart Chemical Brothers starter bedre ud. Det er mindre repetitativt og lyden er mere organisk på de første numre. Desværre ender det med at jeg sidder med samme følelse ved afslutningen af albummet, som jeg gjorde ved de to andre “bands”. Det er musik skabt til at danse til i tomme lagerhaller.

It's good electronic music, but it's still electronic music. plus their second album is way better.
I'm sure it was doing something interesting in the 90s but it just sounds dated and bland now.
This isn't my go-to genre by any means, but I can appreciate a good electronic album when I hear one. This was chill and pretty fun to listen to at first, but quickly became monotonous... or maybe I just got bored of hearing the same beats on different tracks. I wanted to give it three stars, but then I realised that I can't remember even a single track, which speaks volumes. 2.5 stars

Oh boy, another English electronic album. I don't care about this one! I've had some very good electronic albums from artists like Depeche Mode and Portishead as well as albums that I just don't care about from artists like Fatboy Slim. This album leans a lot closer to the latter than the former. Why am I even calling this an album? I really don't even consider this product to be an album. It's more like a collection of random beats. The beats themselves are whatever. They're okay. Some of them are fine, others aren't great though. I really did not like the second-to-last song. Fortunately, the album is mostly instrumental, meaning that we don't have to deal with another "Fucking in Heaven" situation. Still, this album's mid. And of course these guys have two albums on the list as well! Great. How great. 2/5
All the tracks on the album sound very similar. And all I could think of was the advert that used to be on dvds. You wouldn't steal a car , you wouldn't steal a bag etc
