The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators
The 13th Floor Elevators
Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Jújú, merkilegt þegar þetta komi út, ég heyri það, en talar lítið til mín í dag. Ekki beint leiðinlegt en voða lítið sem situr eftir samt. Leyfi þessu að slefa upp í þrjár.
Parents will get this: you know that feeling when your kid gets a fidget spinner or one of those PopIt spinning it or popping it and you don't mind it first but then they just keep doing it over and over and over and over and over and over and over until the sound of it makes you want to pull your hair out and drop kick whoever invented the thing into the next county? That's this album and that stupid electric jug. Someone needs to have their toy taken away. It was an otherwise enjoyable psychrock album but damn. The jug. On every single song.
I’m not the world’s biggest fan of psychedelia, but I’m not really opposed to it either. Just like with this album. Not a big fan, didn’t hate it, no skipworthy songs, but no songs that really grabbed me either. A solid middle of the road album.
I'm not sure that I need more electric jug music in my life. While I appreciate pschedelica and this album is ok, it wasn't anything real special. Fave: Reverberation (Doubt)
Meh - sounds like the Rolling Stones for me. Not really my taste in music but some of it did sound pretty good and seem talented
Alright. Nothing really stuck out to me other than it sounded quite old. I'm finding it hard to enjoy music from that far back on account of the sound quality. In summary: very same-y not much of note with the critical reception but not bad. light 3 is probably a bit generous.
pretty consistent but blends together after a couple songs. not bad at all but not particularly memorable
Sounds like any other 60s album. Nothing special.
Never heard of these guys but the album was actually pretty good. It could never have been mainstream but I suspect the band was more into presenting the art than looking for popular acceptance.
Not the worst, not the best. It's still some pretty good psychadelic rock
I listened to all the unique songs once but I'm not listening to 3 different versions of each. 60s guitar sound is always nice but nothing to write home about. 1966 had some much much better albums
It's not boring, I'll give it that. Don't fall down did bore into my brain though.
Denmark’s finest, The Raveonettes, must have listened to this glorious noise a fair bit!
It's okay but there is much better music from the genre.
lite meh över det här men gött sound
It’s like if syd Barrett never left the Floyd and they kept making psychedelic music.
Typical 60s rock
Decent 60s psychedelic rock, but there’s that noise on the track. Strangely almost sounds like record scratching at times, but nope, it’s an Electric Jug. So bizarre, pretty out there.
Not bad. Definitely a distinct sound of the 60s. Not a real banger of an album though - It starts strong but kind of fizzles in spots. 3/5
Instant 60s vibe.
# 142 : Good album, interesting style I had not heard before. I Enjoyed it Reverberation (Doubt)
You're Gonna Miss Me Reverberation Thru the Rhythm
Nice. Classic. Mids.
Psychedelic fun for the whole family
Aight another psychedelic classic rock album. The "electric jug" is cool.. I never heard of that before this. To me it has a little bit of a tabla sort of sound, with a limited amount of default timbres that it can produce but there's a lot of flexibility in adjusting those few sounds. I like the second track a bit actually "Roller Coaster". Cool energy in it and I like how the instruments move through the song with some of them maintaining the base elements of the song and kind of slithering in and out. I ended up not disliking this one as much as I thought I was going to. 3/5!
Psychedelic 60s rock
This was okay.
This was ok. Nothing special though.
Album 264 of 1001 The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators Rating : 3 / 5 Nice album. Not one I'd likely come back to, but still a good listen
It’s all good and interesting to varying degrees, just not something I’m going to return to a whole lot. 3.5/5
"The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators" is psychedelic rock incarnate. They are credited with founding the genre - including the use of the word psychedelic to describe music. This drug-induced album is loud, grainy, and every track sounds pretty similar. Roller Coaster and Through the Rhythm have very cool intros which may have been sampled elsewhere throughout the years. The listener would probably need to indulge to get more from this album.
Psychedelic . Normal.
Opened up today’s album and thought, ah, another new band. Started listening to it and of course I know and love the first song. I guess I just never paid attention to the artist. But it seems that’s the only song that gets much play, at least according to Amazon’s play stats, and the only one I know. I enjoyed the next few as well but the album is way too long and the songs are too similar. They all blur together and, quite frankly, get tiresome.
Pretty good. A weird psychedelic 60s album that’s was exactly what I expected it to be. Some very good songs, and some very mediocre ones, but I definitely see why it would have been influential. I enjoyed it and will come back to some tracks, but won’t ever listen to the full album again. 3/5
Fine throwback
Never heard of these guys, not sure what to think really. It seems fine. The more I listen the better it gets... Standouts: Splash 1 (Now I'm Home), You're Gonna Miss Me 3.5
This was fun. Feels like a solid 3.5 for now, maybe some room to grow?
Huh
3.5/5. Some hippie shit, I can hardly recall the time that I thought boomers were cool.
Klingt so, wie man es bei dem Jahr und dem Cover erwartet:D 1. Platte gut, 2. Platte viel „geschubber“
I liked it but didn't love it.
I didn't enjoy this as much as I though I would. The majority of these songs are lackluster and don't have anything remarkable. I barely got throught it and I like the psychedelic genre. Nevertheless, the songs were good and just feel like an age we have long since passed.
Some of this I could totally jam with and it hit the spot, as someone who does generally like psychedelic rock. But some of it I found highly irritating. There were certain representative riffs and lyrics that just massively wound me up. But overall I didn't hate it so a tricky one to rate
This was EXACTLY what I thought it would be from the album cover. Enjoyable for sure.
Talks the talk more than it walks the wall. It's decent, but didn't wow me
Nothing ground-breaking but enjoyable enough
Trippy and fun for a few songs, but it got tiresome the longer I played it.
This used to be one of my all time favourite albums. However, much as I love this, it's far from perfect. The first two tracks set a high bar that the rest of the album never quite manages to maintain and the garage rock has lost its shine a bit by the end.
It was alright. Not too noteworthy, but not bad. Was kinda hoping to like it more. Oh well. My favourite song was Don't Fall Down.
Oh, yay, another cult 60s psychedelic act. Can't get too much of that stuff. </sarcasm> I feel like the ongoing appeal of the 13th Floor Elevators has more to do with the cult of the Tragic Tale of Roky Erikson than the music itself. It's pretty fair representation of 60s psych garage rock, but really, they only have one song that they play over and over. and that horrible 'electric jug' sound becomes intensely irritating over the course of the album. 2.5 stars, rounding up for no real reason.
Oh man, this is a cool one. I remember finding this album years ago, I had a fun time discovering odd psychedelic bands. These guys have a very specific sound, I think it's noted as use of a "jug," maybe that's the strange whispering sound, which sounds like reversed vocals. Anyway, I'd describe them as "one trick ponies" on that basis, but the music is still pretty good. I enjoy this album, even though we've been inundated with psych rock '60s projects on this list. Favorite tracks: You're Gona Miss Me, Roller Coaster, Monkey Island. Album art: Love love love it, classic. Perfectly psychedelic colors, a giant menacing eye, just excellent art all around. How could you not want to listen to this? 3.5/5
This one's okay. I'm starting to run out of things to say about these albums. I definitely respect this album for being one of the first real psychedelic rock albums ever made. That gives it value and a reason to be on this list. The album itself definitely isn't bad. The instrumentals are good. The writing can be good at times. The singing is hit or miss for me. Sometimes it's good, other times it isn't. I think the singer does good screams. These reviews are really starting to blend together, aren't they? Oh well. This album isn't really anything special to me, but it was a nice short listen that I would call a milestone album for this specific genre of music. High 3/5.
I'm a sucker for a good "trail-blazing, eccentric musical genius who is seemingly lost to mental illness but is a huge influence on many great artists and then finally emerges again, triumphant" story. Brian Wilson is a good example. Given that I do love this type of story, and being a fan of 60's music, classic rock, psychedelia, garage rock, and proto-punk, when I first heard about Roky Erickson I thought, I'm going to love this. I watched the documentary You're Gonna Miss Me and thought it was great. But the music? Not so much. I get that it's really early garage rock and was influential, so I really do *appreciate* it but I don't love listening to it. It's just a little too basic maybe. 3 stars.
I want to be the bubbly guy in the background of everything
Bubbling effect too prominent and overused, overshadowing great psych rock song
Liked the album, but it wasn’t spectacular. A lot of it sounded too similar. 3/5 Might listen again
Nicht das allerbeste Psychadelic Rock Album, aber das Genre halt immer gut
This is what I think of when I think of 60s psychedelic.
Absolutely psychedelic sounds - correct
AJ: psycho deli c hounds
Another mildly interesting 60 psyche rock album
Arguably the first psychedelic rock album. Imagine how different life would be if this album never released. No Jimi Hendrix, no Pink Floyd, no Despacito, Al Gore wins in 2000. Really makes you think. Truly a modern man's album. The dividing line between the cockroach and the pesticide.
Essential Tracks: You’re Gonna Miss Me (Playlist)
Exercici pscidèlic de manual. Molt de l'època i del seu moment. El treball de guitarres i melodies es brillant. Una de les clàssiques bandes de culte dels '60, mereixedora de la seva 'aura'
It's a good album, but I don't know what sets it apart from all the other albums out there just like it other than I guess it's considered the first of it's kind.
They have this cool quick bubbly sound in the back like someone quickly making a rising and falling sound while moving their tongue, but they do it on almost every track and it feels a lot less special. A lot of these tracks sound so alike because they carry over all elements of the song before them.
2.5
It's like I walked through a beaded curtain into a smoky San Francisco LSD lounge. I won't leave the same person from which I came. And I'm taking that jug with me!
I guess these guys were influential, but I think there was a lot better psychedelic music made.
This album’s fine, but it didn’t really inspire me, so in lieu of a clever review, I will instead point out that the phenomenal 5-star Outkast record ATLiens (which is inexplicably not on this list) features songs titled both “13th Floor” and “Elevators.”
Cool, but I like my psychedelia in small doses.
The Sound here is quite dated, but nevertheless there is a cool vibe going on. A big fan of 60’s psychedelia for the atmosphere it captures. Very present on this album, a true underground classic. Love it
Electric Jugaloo
mm
Yes, psychedelic and yes Roky Erickson mighta been a crazy genius. But only a few songs – "Reverbation" and "Don't Fall Down" most notably – seem to have depth or impact beyond a raw and shaky sort of power. Seems authentically psyche-y in its shambolic and discordant darknesses. That jug instrument sounds wacky. Would this record have benefited form less cowbell and other garage-y vibes? Could it have benefitted from an increase of chamber pop attributes? Yes and yes, one thinks.
Garage psychedelia. Holds together well as an album.
At the top end of how one would expect a 1966 album called The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators by The 13th Floor Elevators to sound. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Fire Engine Date listened: 28/08/23
suprisingly good 60s psych, still I'm far from liking this genre. So the middle of the pack for me, but I expected this album to be way worse
One of those records where you're ready to give it five stars two minutes into it, but by the end it was too samey for too long.
Competent psych-rock that is a bit more loose and fun than most of its contemporaries. I wish it grabbed me more, but it was mostly background sound for me. Still a wild combo that I respect. Electric Jug definitely sounds almost like a synthesizer. Wild, but also feels a bit one-dimensional. 3.5 down to 3.
Slightly before my actual awareness time.... Really sounds good as an example of that genre for the period
Rock psicodélico sesentero un tanto soso. Ni fu ni fa.
Psychedelic . Normal.
Okay so far. Bit of a throwback to the 60s sound. I'd listen to this again. 3 or 4*.
this sounds like a pretty mediocre psych rock album, which is fine, by that virtue its already defaults to being a good album as it's clearly made with love and fun. However, it's not like there's anything super special in terms of what other bands - The Flaming Lips, some Beck, some Hendrix, etc. - have demonstrated that the genre is capable of. Also what's the deal with garbage spotufy cut of the album that this links to? :(
Solid
I'm surprised I had never heard of this band because this was pretty decent psychedelic rock. I probably would have really liked this as a teenager. As an adult, I didn't mind it but it did feel a bit repetitive.
A bit like early Beatles without the charm
Interesting album with one very good, extremely psychedelic (in a good way) song, "Roller Coaster". Magical song, feeling of being in a trance, almost a perfect song. Rest of the album is not really impactful in any way, just a compilation of songs in similar style with an average outcome. Entertaining album to listen to, but to be discarded soon after.
Pretty good.
jangly, raw, and sounds great. Whole thing is really tight and has a great energy. Best tracks: you’re gonna miss me, reverberation, the kingdom of heaven is within you
From Austin, Texas, USA Their first album. People either love or hate the jug sound effect. For me…..i didn’t even notice it, so I guess I don’t mind it. Singles: ------------------------------------- You're Gonna Miss Me (#55 USA) Reverberation (Doubt) (#129 USA) Standouts: You’re Going To Miss Me, Splash 1, Rating: 3/5
It sounds a bit like the Monkeys, but the songs have a harder edge. You're Gonna Miss Me is good. Fire Engine is kinda cool. You Don't Know works for me as well. There are shades of punk rock in this, before there was really any punk rock.
This record is the equivalent of shooting up LSD into your earholes. Intriguing for a song or three, but probably not for an entire album.
Taken out of the 60's Zeitgeist, I feel like this just loses its relevance. I'm sure it belongs on the list and was a breakthrough then, but we've heard so much psychedelic music now and albums like this get lost in the mix. No songs really stood out to me, but it wasn't bad and I didn't mind it as some chill background music. I suppose I'm happy I heard it, but I can't say much else.
On väkevä ja klassikkostatuksen saavuttanut! Hienosti pyörii alusta loppuun. 3/5
Ihan jees psykeilyä, 3/5
It's fine as far as Psychedelic goes but I've heard enough Psychedelic already.
It appears that a key reason for adding this LP to the 1001 list is that it was the first album to use the word “psychedelic” in its title. Also, they are maybe the only band in history to feature the electric jug as a lead instrument. It certainly has a weird sound, the jug, that is. Also, it’s weird to have a guy whose only contribution is the jug sounds, he doesn’t sing back up vocals or switch it up and play a tambourine or any another instrument. But that’s very psychedelic, I guess. I was familiar with one 13th Floor Elevators song, the 8-minute “Slip Inside This House” which I found quite epic, what Hawkwind might have sounded like in the sixties. I couldn’t find a similar song on this LP, though I did find some catchy Beatles like guitar intros but not the vocals or song-writing to back them up. I gave the LP a second listen to pick out the electric jug parts and it sounded better, which is a good sign.
*austin powers dance gif* Allt í lagi plata.
it started to feel very samey toward the middle of this album. i suspect that was more in part to do with the production technology and values of the day.
It wasn't bad, but the sound quality was just plain bad. It's not their fault; it's what they had available to them at the time. But I can't get past it. Some of the songs may have been good if they were refined more and had better quality. I'm giving it a 3/5 out of respect and appreciation for the music writing and lyrics; it didn't hurt my ears and it was an enjoyable listen but none of the songs stood out to me.
Trippy. The jug gets repetitive and annoying. I might revisit in an altered state of mind.
I guess the title of the album sounded a bit cooler than I found the listening experience to be. I don't hate that it was the assignment, but I think one listen is enough for me.
This was fine but I got bored of it quickly. I think I was expecting something more funky and weird with a name like that!
More late 60s stupidity. It's pretty telling when the album's Wikipedia entry is more or less just a few lines of text propping up the "included in 1001 albums to hear before you die" note. I liked the production on this one though, had a huge amount of reverb that gave it an atmosphere. Music not my thing but it did have the right vibe. Almost a bit spooky (cheesy hammer horror spooky) here and there. 3/5.
I’m usually not too picky about the mastering of an album, but those jangly guitar tones were just too piercing for me. Each of the tracks were a bit generic. Cool to see early psych-garage, but not really my jam.
apparently this was the first album to ever use “psychedelic” in the title, which is a cool fun fact and (i assume) the reason it made the List. musically, it’s… not great. some interesting ideas, but not really enough skill to execute them properly. disappointing, bc i usually love psych rock.
No strong feelings either way.
Meh
For my liking, the album's title is way too much tell and not enough show. The music itself is par for the course mid 60s pop and rock music without anything standing out. It's fine enough, but that's all. 2.5/5
They have a cool psychedelic garage sound and I'm sure they were influential and ahead of their time, but nothing comes close to the legendary first track.
Hippies in the Garage! Not bad as a whole, but I suspect I'd appreciate this album more if I had listened to it in 4-5 song sessions over time. It's just a little over long for me today.
Better then i had expected. Solid first track.
тревожно немного
`Decent half instrumental album with some nice psychodelic and progressive sounds
“A decent 60s rock album that ventures outside the boundaries of the expected”
A fun album that leans toward a 4, but I couldn’t stand one sound that popped up a lot in some songs. I’m not sure what it was, but it immediately annoyed me.
Not bad, but nothing stood out as very good, either.
This consistently appears in 'best of' lists but I just don't see how it rises above the many other psychadelic 60s albums. It's good enough, but pedestrian.
Caught my attention right away and I enjoyed it. However, it dragged on with similar-sounding songs. I think I’d like this band best in short spurts.
Weirdos. But I kinda like it.
Meh.
PLAY THAT FUCKIN' JUG.
This is the psychedelia I like. Fuzztones for miles and microphones pushed to the breaking point. You're Gonna Miss Me is the sound of the late 60s for me.
I love, absolutely love the first track...You're gonna Miss Me. I also figured that since I don't really know them and love this song, that the rest wasn't going to be quite up there on the same bar. I was correct. Still, some good stuff and this classic track. 3 stars.
6/10. Pretty good, and I can definitely hear how this was influential
A sound to match the artwork. A bit samey all the way through and I think that “you had to be there, man” to get the full hit. But the jam session, psychedelic vibe is a lovely place to escape to.
It sounds quite quaint now although it must have sounded outlandish at the time when British bands were still wearing matching suits and folk rock was huge. Terribly recorded and the songs don’t stand up that well but I did enjoy bits of it (although that weird noise they put in a load of the tracks gets very annoying quickly).
Fun album - quintessentially 60s I could’ve gone for a bit more 'psychedelic' - but I'm sure at the time it was pretty out-there. Great album art work.
Perfectly fine bit of psychedelica. Made for a pleasant background for my train ride without ever really standing out
Interesting. I preferred Easter.
You’re gonna miss me is an absolute TUNE - I enjoyed some of the tracks but others hurt my ears a bit. I’m going with 3 because there are some really good songs and I like the general sound. The lead singers voice I like a lot too
Not nearly as psychedelic as I thought it would be! But given how 13th floors don't exist... well, this album doesn't exist?
Quite a bit better than i expected. Enough strong garage rock tracks, good beat, straightforward guitars, with a raw energy. You're Gonna Miss Me, Splash 1 and Kingdom of Heaven were really good.
Enjoyable 60’s psychedelic album, would listen again
Enjoyable psychedelia. It was a little rawer, but it also led to being a little too noisy and busy for regular listening to me.
Monkees on Acid.
Love the innovative use of the electric jug. Less convinced by Roky's voice.
psych surf rock, not my fav.
I think I didn't like it because these extended versions are so boring for someone that is not already a fan. I'm sure I would enjoy more the original album.
not bad, not that great either
Virtuosic electric jug playing
yes, I would like to hear this again.
Darkly weird and intense garage/psychedelic rock. The quality level is a bit uneven from song to song, but it's still pretty great. Highly innovative and memorable. Fave Songs: You're Gonna Miss Me, Roller Coaster, Thru the Rhythm, Splash 1 (Now I'm Home), You Don't Know
not really my type of music, but i didn’t hate it.
The 13th Floor Elevators were truly on the leading edge of psychedelic rock, but those who followed and likely took inspiration from them just did it better. I would have been interested to hear Big Brother and the Holding Company perform these songs, with tighter instrumentation (even in the context of psychedelic rock's loose style) and Janis Joplin's vocals. As it was, I give them credit for pioneers of the sound but can't really recommend it or want to go back to it.
I don't know. It's sort of a fun, psychedelic, crackling sound throughout this album. And it's sonically cohesive. And yet, I can't say this is really an album I'd return to again and again. Lots of skips here. That said, some real gems here too, which kick this album up from two stars to three for me in terms of enjoyability. Fave track: Monkey Island, for that guitar lick alone. Wowza!
Rock. Psicodélico.
Fair
Exactly what you'd expect. Rock and roll with a psychedelic twist. Worth a listen.
Blueprint for a lot of psychedelic albums. As it stands, it’s much more garage rock than anything else. And that’s OK. (6/10) FT: The Kingdom of Heaven (Is Within You), Roller Coaster
Not bad
Not my thing, but not horrible
Dat viel me niet tegen
Net de juiste hoeveelheid gekte, cool!
It was a pretty cool find.
Cool album
60’er psykedelisk garagerock, råt, stadig melodisk, jug-lyde
Groovy. That fits right in my bag, baby! (well kind of) Not sure what the bubbly sound is throughout the album, but not a fan. All said and done, I think several of these tracks could be deconstructed to yield some cool songs. 2.8/3
very 60's. i like it
Nice psychedelic sound but a bit meh
So strange and so recognizable...I liked it, but it's not anything so special. Maybe another day I'll give it another try just to check.
The album cover would suggest Psychedelic even if the album title didn't. Hopefully that is what we'll be getting, some nice heavy 60's grooves. Yup! First song, You're Gonna Miss Me, immediately reminds me of Van Morrison belting out G-L-O-R-I-A, but like with some extra lava lamp in the background, which is all good with me. A promising start. Several songs in the blooping is starting to get tiresome. But even with that it is still firmly rooted in its 60's sound. Oh wait. I'm listening to a remaster. This isn't a 2010 band trying (and very much succeeding) in trying to sound like a 60's band. It *is* a 60's band. Right. Well, that's a little less fun. Monkey Island evokes the Animals "We Gotta Get Outta This Place" but weirder. Actually, a lot of the songs are like that. They sound a lot like other bands of the day but with more jug. Roller Coaster, which sounds like Jefferson Airplane meets The Doors, predates both White Rabbit and The End, so credit where credit is due on that. Did I need to hear this before I died? I think yes, the jug situation was worth hearing. Favorite song is definitely the first track, You're Gonna Miss Me. Overall the album is fine but kind of dragged through the middle. An album all as good as Miss Me would get 4, all Monkey Island would get 2. So my choice is obvious.
There's a reason the electric jug never took off as a featured instrument in popular music. Similar to why the wishbone offense never lasted in football. It might have worked at the collegiate level, but only if you had extremely skilled position players, and even then success was sporadic. That shit never flew in the pro game. The electric jug and the wishbone offense got old really fast. Shoutout to the opening of "High Fidelity". Bumping this score up a notch just for reminding me of that movie.
Love this one
Not bad. It has a 60s style but it sounded nice. No recognized songs
Very psychedelic, very 60s. Enjoyable, although not sure it needed (at least) two versions of each song!
I recognise the album cover but never listened to this band before. Due to the name I was going into this hoping it would be way more Psychedelic! It was pretty good though and I'd give it another shot sometime.
I should like this more as I like some similar stuff but I couldn't really get into it. A lot of the background psychedelic noises were cool I just wanted more of it
it's an album
Fine but nothing special.
1st song, you're gonna miss me, cool 60s sound. Weird sounding instrument in most songs.
Some Doors, some Jefferson Airplane... I had never heard of these guys but their influence on the late 60s is pretty obvious.
6/10
It was ok, enjoyed the more surfery ones, and I've now learned all about the electric jug.
Good stuff, fun listen!
This album is so damn 60s. It's got that Mamas & Papas chord picking folk sound mixed with that Rolling Stones distorted blues vibes all rolled up into a frantic cyclonic trip.
Wasn’t too bad kinda funky.
A fun listen, albeit I found it starting to drag a bit in the second half.
weird
Weird, but never quite reaches high weirdness. It's all a bit normal-weird. More jug please. The mono recording seems better, actually, but the stereo track order has a monster of a closer.
Crazy and weird but fun and rocks pretty hard. Twangy surf guitar, 60s ginger baker style overdrumming, and that electric jug thing adds a whole level of frenetic energy.
Rock psicodélico sesentero un tanto soso.

27th August 2021 Listened whilst getting ready for a weekend away camping with sav and Sally. Really enjoyed this, it has the 60s written all through it even to the point where you can hear the darker undertones to it as well.
Kinda felt meh. Interesting listen, but nothing really stood out. Sounded more like experimental surfer rock than psychedelic rock. More than likely will not be a repeat listen.
Would listen again
Fun listen. It wouldn't be on my must-play list, but I'd give it a spin on occasion.
Well thecfirst song; You're gonna miss me is FANTASTIC. 2nd song way more psychedelic (I wonder what that burbling sound is...could be a guitar effect, maybe even a human voice...sounds cool though). Some great songs here and I love all the covers. It started out as a 3 star, especially the first song and Splash 1. By the ninth or tenth it was down to 2 🌟, then came 4 straight covers, all excellent. Back up to 3 stars and could get close to 4 with more listens. 3 🌟
I recognize that in 1966 this was wild. Sounds a few years early. The surf rock riff on a psych album blew my mind
mad
I liked it more than most psychedelic rock.
Just looked at the track list....wow this is a long album lol. Really cool sounds tbh. Not for me, but I can appreciate what it is.
Another album that's not bad but I don't understand why it's on this list
reverby wall of sound
Like it's okay, but on the other hand very forgetable.
Was really weird
Geen uitblinker van een album, maar vond het wel oké
Very psychedelic vibe. Quite liked it but very samey
Hear the Texas. Hear the the garage walls. Hear the ELECTRIC JUG. This album would still be good jugless, but with that chaotic, quadruple-timing whoop-whooper in the mix this thing goes next level. The entire album feels urgent, almost panicked, like a bad LSD trip. Like Roky had paranoid dreams of a twister about to touch down. The jug will save you, Roky. B+
A fun freak out album. Nice and garagey, psychedelic. Most prodigious use of the Brazilian thing that sounds like someone inhaling and exhaling fast—and at first it was charming then became annoying. I wonder if it’s supposed to be less prevalent on the mix and new headphones pick it up? I loved this album at first, then found it one note and almost annoying. 3
Have always thought this was good background music. Some high points, but it all blends together after a bit.
Het is best wel goed maar ik vind het niet erg bijzonder

Doidera demais pro meu gosto
Un bon album psychedelic et meme vant les tounes de pink floyd en 1966. J’ai aime le style. 3.25
Trop psychedelique à mon goût.
Early (Wikipedia says possibly the first) psychedelic rock music. It's certainly solid, but I feel like it's on the list more for historical significance than for being a great album.
I had a big psychedelic rock phase late in college/right after. The singles are good, the album mostly forgettable. Blends together.
Pretty sick. Not as good as Easter Everywhere. 6/10
The music is not great but, man, do I want to party with these guys!!
La pregunta es: el mareo que provoca escuchar este disco habrá sido intencional?
I like this album a lot. I have been into the psychedelic rock lately.
3.5 - No tenía idea de que existían The Elevators o su electric jug. Fuera de que abusan de ese sonido poniéndolo en todas las canciones, me pareció un rock psicodélico muy a gusto y en particular me agradó 'Fire Engine'
Pretty solid background music.
I've never heard of this group or the album. It has the psychedelic rock sound. Apparently one of the first bands to use that term.
T
Pretty basic but interesting how old this album is
Interesting album with a lot of Energy. Television has a cool cover of Fire Engine. Didnt blow me away, but still pretty interesting. Very raw.
Mid-60s psych rock. Debut. Beatles era rock with some strange howling and rythms.
Fairly bland 60s psychedelic, may have influenced other bands but didn't care for it much
The guy who played the “electric jug” in this conned his way in to the band right? Deeply ridiculous. The rest of this was pretty dull, very average 60s70s rock. Didn’t keep my attention at all.
Да уже по обложке было понятно что это будет Хрень Группы в то время звучат одинаково Это вообще не расширяет музыку
I don’t get it. Very bad recording. Very long very long. Singing is on the boring side too. Music wise very repetitive. Some good layers of interesting choice of percussion but don’t really contribute much to the overall experience of this album.
normally i can get behind psych rock, but this one was a bit tougher. it was really really odd, some of the production choices and the sounds that they had on the tracks. the weird almost bubbling sound on Thru the Rhythm seemed to come back more than it needed to, and it really dragged down this record for me. it was odd
I wanted to like this but nothing here really stuck with me. There is more interesting Psychedelia from the 60's. 4/10
Eh, didn't get too excited about this
Yes, they certainly are of the psychedelic genre, which they want to make sure you know...but are they a shining example of it? No.
You can't truly appreciate this album until you hear the electric jug harmonizing with a weed whacker outside the window
Wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. It exceeded my expectations, but wasn’t anything to write home about
I admire the ambition of this album. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. No track in particular stuck out to me, they all sound the same.i could have done with a lot less jug.
Я еле дострадала, очень длинный альбом
Never has an album been so appropriately named. It is exactly what it says it is and the album was as uninspired and uncreative as the name.
This was painfully mediocre.
Snoresville 2/5
The more I sit with this album the more I realize it is not for me. I am a really big fan of this era of pop and this era of psychedelic music but the music on this album feels so far away from what I like about this period. There are things I do enjoy though, I felt the vocals were very raw and stood out on each song and I also felt that the electric jug through out the album added some interesting depth to the record. All though I say these postivie things I think the main thing that gets me is the instrumentation and the subject matter of the songs the album as a whole felt like a bore to get through but there are enough songs individually on here that do save it in my eyes. Fav tracks: Splash 1, You don't know, and Don't fall down
I've tried with this album before and it still doesn't work for me now. I get it's influence on many bands that l do like, but there's nothing memorable about it. Occasional I get into it for a moment and it to often quickly descends into drugged out nonsense.
There wasn't really any song that stuck out with me.
100% 60's sound and none of it was noteworthy. Like what you'd hear in every background 60's flick for noise.
Psych rock: Good when it’s rock, bad when it’s psych.
2.0
If there were a stock library for generic psychedelic rock, this would probably be the 'most downloaded'.
It just went on and on. The occasional enjoyable surf guitar did not make up for the irritating as fuck electric jug. This album would probably be ok if it was mixed better AND I was off my face on acid.
You're Gonna Miss Me is great but a whole album is too much.
I’ve long been a fan of the opener of this album thanks to High Fidelity. The rest is pretty good, but nothing quite as electric and exciting as track 1.
Es psicodelico. No me molesta, tampoco es malo. Pero no es mi genero, no lo disfruto demasiado, sino un poco, como una musica de ascensor o bus.
Latazo total. HE acabado harto del "tucu tucu tú". Dos estrellas.
its Fine i suppose, just not for me
I already hate this because of its length. Musically, it was alright but man did it drag on
perfect album for background groovy ambiance
This is a little too trippy for me, honestly.
This would have been a 3 star, but the electric jug stuff was just too distracting and ridiculous. 2 stars
**An ok album
I didn't really connect with this
i was excited when i saw the genre tags but this is kinda boring not gonna lie.. i feel this way about a lot of other 60s releases regardless of the genre so i think this era of music is just really not for me fave track: thru the rhythm
Would have been better without all the pigeon.
As expected very psychedelic. I could appreciate it, but it's not something I would put on on another day. You're gonna miss me was a nice song tho. 1. You're Gonna Miss Me 2. Splash 1 3. Fire Engine
Bättre i teorin än i praktiken.
Psychedelic Rock, Folk, Blues, 1966 -> 2
Some good spots on here. Some of it was pretty hard to listen to.
Beyond ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’, they are a fairly generic late-sixties band.
Here’s me thinking I liked psychedelic rock. It reminds me of a classic Quentin Tarantino film with the characters overtaken by some subconscious need to delve into the bizarre. But give me an hour and a half of it, of which there are many versions of the same songs, and I will furrow my eyebrows in confusion and slight boredom. Had this album have been half its length, maybe I would have seriously delved into it more. It’s not bad, but nothing special alas.
A funny world this is. Delightful Jeopardy contestant with clear hippie commune parents named Xaque (Pronounced Xaqcuetly the way you'd like to pronounce it) brought this up during the insufferable anecdote portion of the program. While the contest fell to the mighty Jamie Ding, I was slightly intrigued for once by the contestant interviews rather than clawing for the remote between the couch cushions to avoid insufferable tidbits about train museum tours with mom or how great everybody is at the studio. The way this record started continued that positive momentum, but as per usual we settled into the usual psych rock lull and found ourselves on the wrong side of interesting. The acid wore off quick, and besides the odd hooted jug , this record offers almost nothing different from the 600 other psychedelic records this list has to choose from as it spawns a new hellscape each morning. Heavier than some of the others with an excellent album cover, but just more middle of the road wannabe strangeness from people who did drugs once. 2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: The opening of the fourth eye! After all that 3rd eye fuss, I was a little disappointed.
4 stars - 2 stars for the electric jug = 2 stars.
Listened Before? N It's just another 60s Psychedelic Rock album. It was fine. We have too many of these on the list. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: You're Gonna Miss Me
Decent psychedelic rock that’s not unpleasant, but I still found unremarkable. I’m sure these guys are legends in their niche, but it didn’t inspire any relistens.
Cut your hair, get a job!
A good start but that goofy jug sound got me. Probably not coming back. I liked the first track, more like that please!
For a group with such an odd name, and a claim for something psychedelic, this is a surprisingly 'normal' sounding album with a few quirky elements. All that is to say, I can't quite figure out who this album is for. It's not strange enough for psychedelia enthusiasts and it's otherwise too normal to attract any other attention.
needs more jug
Fantastic psychedelic album but the jug just wears you down. I got to the point where all I would listen to is the jug and miss the other music. If they had removed it I think this might be a five star album for me.
bit crap
If I was sitting in a field looking at a festival stage then this music would work for me. Any other situation it just felt like the same song every time. I got to learn what an electric jug was though.
gave me a headache - and thats pretty hard for music to do. no disrespect to the elevators but did not enjoy.
Wish I liked this more than I do, but that electric jug is quite annoying. Might like it more if I gave it another go
I found this to be a one-trick surf rock album without much to offer. In addition it’s physically a hard listen because of the poor quality of the recording. The tone is tinny and brash. Not great.
The Relentless Electric Jug Is Not For Me.
I think there is a reason you don't see an electro jug in too many bands... I thought there were some songs on the end of the album that I really liked, but then I realized Tidal started autoplaying music by the band Love, who I'm now exploring more in depth because I may enjoy their music.
It's fine. It's just that the audio quality is so bad.
3/10 I'm running out of unique ways to say "I can hear the quality, but it's not for me".
Eh
Understood that this may have influenced a generation of psychedelic rock however it took a lot of muscle to get through this album. It might have been more palatable without all of the electric jug. I worry I’ll have nightmares with that sound in them.
It would have got a 3 until I noticed the pigeon in every song. Ahh l.s.d I suppose
I have previously listened and liked this album. But would not expect this to be anywhere near this list
I no longer have to wonder what Beaker would sound like as a musical instrument. Could easily have garnered a higher rating if they'd chosen to use the jug judiciously instead of just mindlessly boop-a-wooping through every single song.
The title of this album really intrigued me, but it's pretty bland for me. 2* I agree with others, the bubble sound is super annoying.
No more than a 2. Nothing to see here again
Did not like this one. All sounded the same and the quality of the audio on Spotify was pretty bad
1,5
Trippy, man. How ‘bout that electric jug?
The first track is great. And I can tell why I've never heard the rest of the album.
Funky and weird, but I was kind of waiting for it to be over by the end. Annoyed by the blooping sounds pervading the album which I later learned was an electrified jug, which is a cool idea, but unfortunately sounds like spaceship sound affects made by a 4 year old and never stops. Nothing super memorable.
it’s not special. There are other surf rock stuff that scratch that itch more than this
I got a fever and the only prescription is.... more electric jug!!!
Not a fan of the jug, but there were some decent moments here. You’re Gonna Miss Me was alright, but felt very outdated.
This is truly psychadelic - some moments that remind me of early Dead stuff, and I found myself liking some of the interwoven guitar parts. But ultimately Jug Man really fucks up this whole record. What is this shit? Like, it makes every song so much worse than it needs to be. Thru the Rhythm is a pretty good song, for example, but that little warble makes me want to take a jug to my head.
A jumbled repetitive mess. Normally this genre is a least somewhat engaging. Not this one. 2/5
Album No. 0160 on my playlist. This album was completely new to me; I had never heard of the 13th Floor Elevators before. I get why this album may have been important and influential at the time, this is as much psychedelic rock as it gets. Personally though, I just don't really get why exactly people enjoyed it. Yes, it was something new at the time, but I just don't find much good stuff on "The Psycheldic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators". It maybe the production, which I find too noisy, it may be the songwriting (the songs don't feel very finished; they're unpolished, but in a bad way). And I don't like the singer's singing style. At times, he felt like a less good version of Mick Jagger, at times I just found his voice obnoxious. Sorry, would have wanted to like it better, but I didn't. I will add "You're Gonna Miss Me", and "Kingdom Of Heaven" to my playlist. 2/5 stars.
