The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators
The 13th Floor Elevators
Reviews (page 4 of 7)
After listening to this album I'm a little surprised I've never heard of The 13th Floor Elevators. It seems like they paved the way for the psychedelic rock movement but I've never heard them mentioned in discussion with other contemporary acts from the 60s. This album had more than enough to stick out from the bunch. Some of it is relatively standard fair, but they go off the beaten path enough to make it interesting. There are a couple tracks that I liked enough to add to my list, with Roller Coast and Fire Engine being a couple highlights. What a cool entry to come out of 1966. Hard not to consider this album ahead of its time. I can't imagine I've heard an example of amplified jug as an instrument before. 2.92 stars
It's an effective throwback album, but not really treading new ground.
leider au im auto gloset. het es paar cooli moment gha aber het sich mit de ziit wie oft s glich agfühlt. es wohlwollends 3.
A decent album but the drugs didn't completely do its job at making music that was intriguing, special, and harmonius.
Awesome coverart. Fun Psychadelic Rock, but no real outstanding songs.
It’s fine I guess. I could have done with 7 tracks instead of 27.
I only listened to disc 1. These guys were whacked and I fully support it. Electric jug anyone? Groovy. I can hear the hours of drugged droning and jamming with one another. These guys liked to explore. And I’ve heard of them before but now know them and would consider this to be the pre-eminent psychedelic experience. Eat your heart out Cream.
My first introduction to this band was through the Radio Birdman cover of You're Gonna Miss Me (which is much better). I usually like psychedelic rock, but that wubba wubba jug through everything is a bit much.
Thank you for inventing Psychedelic Rock, sadly this album wasn't mindblowing for me and for the first time I realized the newest remaster didn't elevate the quality of the mixed that much. I believe that the "Original Stereo Desk Mix" versions are my favorites
Weird, squiggly, fun, albeit very basic!
The jug was certainly something, I appreciated it actually sounded psychedelic separating itself from the rest of the 60's generic rock I really don't like. Still so 60's though, and the jug, mostly appreciate it for being the beginnings of psychedelia, not so much for listening these days
Interesting but ultimately too long
Interesting sound. Better than some other similar albums we’ve had from the time. Not a bad effort.
y bueno que se yo. 7.5/10
The whole jug sound in this album this is wild. I think that’s the only impression it made on me after listening to it.
Far out, man. I can taste colors on this one. Looks like these guys were pioneers in psychedelic music, before the CIA opened up shop in San Francisco for their big social experiment handing out candy to the hippies. You can hear the drugs coursing through their veins. This is cool psychedelic that I've never heard before. The vocals sound too much like Mick Jagger for me to really like. I thought Splash One and You Don't Know were good ones. I'll give it a 3.
After a few listens I am still sorting this one out a bit..I am a big fan of 60s psychedelic rock if it does not get too unstructured. This one has a lot going on that I found cool.
I assume what I’m hearing is the electric jug mentioned on Wikipedia, but I could have sworn they’ve got a guy whose job is going woobooloboloo over every song. Not bad, clearly the precursor to a lot of other bands.
Lisää psykedeelistä rokkia, tosin tuo alempi levy oli parempaa. Tässä ei oo semmoiaia hienoja urkuja kuten siinä. Hyvää kummiskin tämäkin. Samalta aikakaudelta myös. Parhaat: Roller Coaster
I was so relieved this was not in any sense elevator music that I actually enjoyed it. Psychedelia not to over the top and much more varied than much of the music of that time
slightly less weird than i was expecting based on the band and album name but pretty cool old psych nonetheless
I’ve tried a couple of different times with this record, but for the first time the songs really stuck. A band that was perpetually ahead of its time, with a fully fleshed sound that also happened to be completely drenched in garage reverb. It does get repetitive from time to time, as most psychedelic albums do, but its highs are way, way higher than any of its contemporaries. A really great artifact and a standard-bearer for bands to come.
If you asked a good A.I. Engine to generate a psychedelic rock album, it would probably spit out an approximation of this record. Is it chock-full-o-bangers? No, but it absolutely nails the psychedelic sound on every track; you could easily throw this album on instead of a psychedelic rock playlist and not feel like you're missing much. Sure there are bands that did it better, but The 13th Floor Elevators did it first so they get more credit. If you don't know what an electric jug sounds like, not only will you absolutely know its sound after this album but you'll certainly have feelings one way or the other about its use as an instrument. Had Janis Joplin committed to joining the band, they would have had two of the most polarizing sounds in 1960s rock&roll (and maybe some more success). Oh what could have been... PS- If anyone reading this is considering an Elevators/psychedelic rock cover band, "The Electric Jugs" would be a great name (currently available per spotify's artist listings).
Yeah- decent
found one or two songs for me, mono version are originals but hard to listen on just a basic speakers
Kind of a surreal album to listen to, because the music sounds so familiar yet I've never heard of this band before. For better or for worse, the album seems very self-assured in what kind of music they're playing. I think in the back half of it, the tracks seemed to blend with each other. I wish they had more like 'Splash 1' to kind of break up the album a bit. Also, the electric jug was interesting the first time around but then it felt really repetitive later in a slightly grating way. Favorite tracks: Splash 1
Psychadelic rock already scores low for me so 2 discs of it was just a bad time. It doesnt try anything their peers havent already mastered. Its okay I guess, lyrically fun enough and good instrumentals. Its the beige paint of psychadelic rock.
Yep that’s certainly some psychedelic sounds. Is it enjoyable? Sort of? I’m never going to listen to this again in my entire life
The entirety of my knowledge of this group/album is enjoying "You're Gonna Miss Me" on the High Fidelity soundtrack. Based on that song, I expect to like this. Here goes... Yup. Garage rock goodness, as suspected. I enjoyed it except for "Fire Engine," which is appropriately named but not particularly fun to listen to.
An alright album Highlights: - You Don’t Know Me - Don’t Fall Down - You’re Gonna Miss Me
It's a cool album, but nothing really stuck with me. Par for the course for most of these 60s rock albums.
Interminable
One of the most influential psychedelic albums but not that interesting now
Decent album, nothing amazing but a good sound and some good tracks
This is a little better than some other 60s stuff I've heard, but still not enough to really stand out to me.
i need to get high
Mielenkiintosta. Antaisin 3,5
Ajoittain tykkäsin paljonkin mutta kokonaisuudessaan aika perus.
I played this on a road trip across france on a sunny day and it kinda worked. If you are going to listen to freak out proggy psychedelia then it should be ridiculously long, varied and weird.
Starts really cool and I loveeee the sound of the 2nd track but it starts losing me halfway thru
At 841 albums into this challenge, this is one that I swear I've already heard. How many 60s psychedelic albums does one really need to hear after all? It turns out that 13th Floor Elevators were pretty influential in pioneering the sound and were the first to adopt the term. It's notably different from other examples with a heavier influence from garage and surf rock. Jefferson Airplane may be better known today but this is a unique album. I still don't know what an "electric jug" is though.
I mean... it was okay. 60s Garage Rock, with lyrics that are... mid. "And I know that you tried to hide And you cried 'cause you lied about it..." The production is interesting, and obviously... proto- psychedelic? Is that even a THING? The pronunciation in "Fire Engine," or "Fire EnJUHN" bothered me. I felt like things like that could have been done better. If this is one of the first psychedelic albums, then okay. But it doesn't mean it's a classic. Top tracks: "Reverbaration (Doubt)," "Through The Rhythm"
I don't like psychedelic rock but I kind of dug this album. The opening track You're Gonna Miss Me was awesome - energetic, rocking, not weird - reminded me of GLORIA by Van Morrison. I don't think there was another song as good as that one, and the electric jug gave other songs an eerie, trippy sound psychedelia is known for. It was weird but good. But it was still weird so not great. And then a lot of the songs had that down tuned faraway sound. Another quintessential psychedelic schtick, but it's kind of frustrating, like talking to an ambivalent teenager. If I had to pick, I'd say Reverberation, Fire Engine, and Tried to Hide were my other favorites. For what it's worth, this album is just as good as if not better than Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow so the fact that one has an average rating of 3.5 and this one is below 3 says people got carried away with fame and popularity in their ratings.
One of the earliest psychedelic rock albums with a minor hit in "You're Gonna Miss Me" (I knew that song thanks to the High Fidelity soundtrack). The Electric Jug is a...choice. After a while it got irritating to hear. The whole album is very dated, but deserves accolades for being on the leading edge of psychedelic rock which ultimately influences many acts and other genres for decades to come. I'm glad to have heard it, but I don't think I'd revisit it. I'd call it a 2.5 (docking half a point for how irritating the electric jug got), but I'll round up in recognition of their influence. Favorite tracks: You're Gonna Miss Me, Splash 1 (Now I'm Home), Reverberation.
never heard of this band. These guys are interesting. Especially the name of the album, "Psychedelic Sounds". Good tunes so far. Truly never heard these guys. Cool stuff.
It's groovy and all, more interesting as a historical artifact than an album I will return to.
Pretty cool album. Standout songs: Rollercoaster Reverberation Kingdom of Heaven
Assez long tho mais bien psyché for sure
Le grand papa de King Gizz. J'aime bien les petits sons de bulles qui reviennent partout au travers de l'album. Un petit peu de misère avec la qualité sonore par contre (pas d'excuse d'âge, Rubber Soul est sorti la même année)
I didn’t get to listen to all of it.
I liked this more than I thought I would. It was a lot of fun. It felt VERY 60s. Honestly gave me more garage rock feel than Psychadelic. Songs were simple but entertaining! (I def didn't need to listen to both discs.) "Fire Engine" was a lot of fun! Actual rating....3.5 Liked Songs: "You're Gonna Miss Me" , "Splash 1" , "Don't Fall Down" , "Fire Engine" , "You Don't Know" , "Monkey Engine"
This is pretty good hippie rock. Id call it acid rock but it feels more jammy than something really experimental. Not bad at all.
Worth a listen
I actually dig it. Never hear it before. Would probably listen again. 3-4
Pretty cool. Needs more electric jug.
First impression pre listen: Semi-obscure mid to late 60's psych? I'm pretty sure I understand what I'm getting myself into with this one. There might be a few gems in here, but I fear there's a very real possibility that this has aged badly. I'm hoping for a unique twist on the ideas and that it doesn't end up being to obtuse. Could be good, but I think it's best to keep my expectations tempered before diving into this one. There also seems to be a bajillion versions of this album, so I'm just gonna stick with what I persume to be the original mono version. Individual track notes: You're Gonna Miss Me Decently energetic 60's rock with a bluesy twinge to it. It's sort of what you'd expect. The style is unique enough to not be mistaken for anything else, especially with the characteristic vocals. Decent. 3.5/5 Roller Coaster Good drive, mystical and psychedelic atmosphere. The limits of the mono audio format kinda lets it down. The sonic bones are still there for an engaging and trippy experience, especially of its time. It's dynamic and dark, with the rhythmic and spacey drums as the main highlight for me. Good. 4/5 Splash 1 Kind of lost me. The songwriting is a bit basic, and the instrumental doesn't have enough steam behind it to carry it. Has some decent atmospheric elements where it feels like they're dipping into some faux-eastern sounds. Feels very off its time. Average. 2.5/5 Reverberation The bass sounds absolutely terrible. Otherwise just a bit generic. Sounds like an early Stones b-side. Not very exciting. Dislike. 2/5 Don't Fall Down Has a unique kind of jankiness to it. Gives it this sort of uncomfortable, disjointed atmosphere. It's creepy and weird, gives occult found-footage vibes. I kinda like it. Decent. 3.5/5 Fire Engine Surfy. The low fidelity gives it a raw unpolished edge which gives it a sort of groundedness. It's simple, not exactly unique, but entertaining based on their energy and presence alone. I can enjoy me some garagey, balls to the wall organic rock and roll. Decent. 3.5/5 Thru the Rhythm Sounds kinda all over the place. The lyrics are pretty harrowing and thought provoking. Has a claustrophobic disjointedness to it that just makes it sound a bit off. Average. 2.5/5 You Don't Know There are some cool rhythmic elements in the instrumental here, but otherwise there's very little to talk about. The extended outro bumps it up a bit with its strange trippy soundscape. Fine. 3/5 Kingdom of Heaven A bit of a sonic meatball. Every sonic element is so tightly squished together that it's difficult to follow what's going on. There's a good song in there, it's just unfortunately let down by terrible sounding equipment. Don't mind the background guitar or the mystique laden vocals. Average. 2.5/5 Monkey Island Got decent energy. Not much else to say about it. A bit cliche. Average. 2.5/5 Tried to Hide Forgettable. Keeps at it with the patented sound of the album. Doesn't really do anything new or complex. Average. 2.5/5 Final review: It's an album I don't mind having heard, but one that I'm unlikely to ever return to. The driving psych-garage sound isn't bad, I'd say it's even pretty cool at times, but I just think other bands did it better. They were early to the game, I respect the hell out of that. I like their energy, and I find the vocals really out there (in a good way). But to me it's too dated, both in recording quality and when it comes to the songwriting. And hell it's not like I disliked fully, there are even moments where the low fidelity, ancient technology adds to the sound of a track. I'll even admit the lyrics sometimes had a certain mystique to them. However it's not nearly consistent enough. The novelty of the electric jug is fun at first, but wears off quickly and becomes just another part of the instrumental soup. It's one of those albums where it's easier to point out the few things that didn't work, because most of it was just okay - inciting very little emotional response. 2.5/5 rounded up to a 3.
When I heard the first song on this album, I thought of 60s groups like 'Them', in fact I thought I'd found a new cool group I've missed. Maybe it was the album I found, there were like 3 different versions, but half of the songs just had a weird ringing/synth/funny voice that droned throughout. It distracted me, a lot! I'm going to guess this is/was something that people have enjoyed. But as a one time listener (yep, probably won't again!), I didn't really see the point to it. They're a classic 60s group in a time with many 60s groups, I don't see what made them special. Really. 3 Stars. They're still better than The Hollies.
It was alright. Better than the 2s that I’ve rated, so would give a 3.
Man, this band sure loves to reissue this one album. Their YouTube Music page is made up of six different versions of “The Psychedelic <whatever> of the 13th Floor Elevators”, each with different album covers. I hope I’m listening to the right one. Anyways, psychedelic album. Gimme some more-a-those. A Wizard / A True Star is firmly poised atop the “best album I have listened to through this list” throne. I think another banger from this genre is the only thing capable of dethroning it. I didn’t like this album much on my first listen, though I’ve come around to it more on the second go. The mixing of this album is kind of abhorrent, though the actual songwriting and music is very interesting. The defining feature of this album is the rippling, flapping noise featured in most of the songs on this album, which is a sound I enjoy. As far as songs go, there are quite a few good ones. The surf rock influence on You’re Gonna Miss Me is quite enjoyable and does a good job at introducing the sound of the album. Roller Coaster is a surprising pivot, taking on a more tense and nerve-wracking sound. I like the oscillating vocals and quaint lyrics of Fire Engine. You Don’t Know has the strongest songwriting of the album, with some very catchy and surreal lyrics. Tried to Hide is a good closer. It’s very heavily doused in the flapping sound mentioned earlier, and I like the addition of the harmonica (a rare source of praise, especially after recently getting off a Bob Dylan album) A very strong 3/5. I'm not sold on this album enough to where I would bump it to a 4/5, though I can always do that a little later down the line. That being said, I'm curious to check out more of this band someday, even if this album appears to have been their only release of note. May as well do what I always do and check why this album is in the book. American band, which makes sense now that I think about it. First “acid rock” album. That’s pretty much it, though the vocalist of the band appears to have had a pretty successful solo career. I can vouch for this album. It appears to be a bit of a critical darling and has had an influence on other psychedelic acts. Solid pick
This was a solid listen. I'm not really too into psychedelic rock, although I do appreciate the jangly guitars.
I think I dig acid rock under the right circumstances - otherwise it is a bit monotonous and at times irritating. This could have been Jefferson Airplane or Beach Boys or any band from that era.
Álbum bem interessante de rock psicodélico. CVJ Neko
It's definitely early psych for sure
Je commence à en avoir un peu soupé des albums psychédéliques des années 1960. Mais je n’ai pas détesté celui-ci, assez entraînant et accessible
Fun and interesting, no duds.
Groovy as fuck! Hadn’t ever done a deep dive. Dig’
Different, not bad. Will listen again
A groovy collection of psychedelic rock. One of the best of this genre
good album, funky stuff, but given the cover I was expecting waaay funkier and more psychedelic stuff, my expectations were hiiiighhh. 3.5/5
Two 60s hippie acid rock albums in a row. Neat.
Not bad at all
Another one of those 60s psychedelic albums that started off good only to have every song sound the same
6/10
In the orchestra I play in, there is this trombonist who is often unable to play due to whatever reason and therefore joins us in the percussion section. Because the conductor never really cares enough and this guy insists on it, he plays the cowbell pretty much always regardless of how appropriate it is. This band suffers the same fate with the electric jug.
Blends together
Muy bueno, guitarras crudas y voces medio psicodelicas, temas largos
Smoky vocals over some solid psychedelic sounds. It sounds primitive, but it was one of the first at least.
Groovy, man.
Pretty cool.
I've heard better psychedelic music
Favorite Track: Splash 1
I've heard the first song, and liked the album at first, but was over it on the back half.
I started out liking this little slice of 60's psych rock quite a bit, but it started to weigh on me. It didn't help that the spotify version of this album included multiple versions of the songs and went on for 2+ hours. Fell from a 4 to a 3 in my book.
Background music for me
Three is a troublesome score. It can run a wide gamut, from 'I really don't like this but I recognise its significance', right up to 'I kind of love it but I hear some shortcomings', via 'there's plenty going on but I just don't know if I really get it', or 'I might need more time to digest this'. Anyway, this is a 3 for me today. It's good, and a pretty fun listen even if I found a few of the lyrics a bit stilted. Am I likely to seek it out again unprompted? Not really.
60's acid rock. These guys are one of the bands credited with starting the psychadelic genre. It's not bad. This is the transition period. There are psychadelic elements to it, but it isn't way out there like other bands in the psychadelic genre would be in future years ..at the point of this album it was like garage rock made by people who were fucked up on LSD. It's like a more weird Blue Cheer. Interestingly, this band had a member who played the "electric jug". Literally a jug that he would blow into next to a microphone. Favorite songs: You're Gonna Miss Me, Reverberation, Fire Engine, Thru the Rhythm Least favorite songs: Splash 1 3/5
Electric jug is certainly one of the instruments of all time
Psychedelic is definitely the word. It sounded exactly like what you'd expect a 60s band that's into experimenting with soundscapes and genres would sound like. Don't be put off by the lengthy track list (27), a number of them are different versions of certain songs. All in all, I found it interesting enough to keep my attention, but it's another one I won't be going back to quickly
Superpsychedelic!
Langatmiges unausgereiftes Album. Es war ok machte aber teilweise wenig Spaß beim Hören.
Like unironic Austin Powers jams.
Tremendous ninth grade art class energy from this cover. ... and the eager, earnest, adolescent energy continues in the actual music!
I like it, but after a while it begins to merge into one idea
Solid, but I'm probably not listening to it again unless someone slips me acid
3 - 4. Würde ne stabile 4 sein, wenn dieses seltsame Wobbel Instrument nicht wäre.
So so not my thing
3.5
Will listen again. Occasionally in the mood for this kind of thing.
= The Beatles I was prepared for so much worse given the name but this was fine. Typical 60s rock
Average old psychedelic rock
Rollings Stones like
This sounds actually and once again old. Some catchy tunes, but nothing I'm going to return to.
The whooping jug sound is highly annoying, but the album is mostly decent rock.
Like a club scene from Austin Powers !!
It's all right. I have no desire to hear it again, but it wasn't awful. 'Of its time' is how I'd describe it. 3/5.
Oooooh, I like it a lot actually so far!! On (I believe) the third song right now, and I'm finding a lot to enjoy about this album! Woop woop! Pretty good overall, I’m willing to give it a four, but for some reason it doesn’t feel quite right. Maybe a 3 with the nuance that it’s a very very high 3, and that I prefer a few of the songs way over parts of other albums that I’ve given 4s to. Guess we’ll see whether this receives a 3 or a 4 for a mark. Tata for now!! P.S. I also think that upon further listening, I would enjoy it even more. So maybe, yeah just maybe, I’ll give it a 4. It has cool production and everything, and some standout songs with interesting variation throughout. Just some unforgettable, heard-it-a-thousand-times-before songs, though, unfortunately.
Al principio me gustó, pero distinguir una rola de otra es imposible. Un trip, pero las rolas no funcionan si se separan del conjunto. 6/10
I mean, it’s of its time. Pretty good, though. One song was cringe, but You Don’t Know (How young you are) was pretty good.
I only listened to the mono version of the tracks. The stereo version probably wouldn't have given me much else. I quite liked the album. But not much of it remains in my memory. I don't see any reason why this album was included in the 1000 list. 3/5
Bit too 60s for me
Too long. But groovey
Never heard of this but I'm intrigued Okay so as a rule I'm not into the psychedelica stuff as much as the glam and that that came a bit later but I appreciate what's going on here there's some variety to it even if it is blending into one a bit Yeah idk i didn't have anything to say while I was listening to it and now I'm here to rate it and i can't remember anything. 2.5 rounding up
Decent stuff, the first track is great, but overall it was just fine. I’ve the follow up Easter Everywhere and liked it better. A fun listen but not essential, at least for me.
There’s some good stuff in here. I’ve listened to this band before at the recommendation of someone doing this project. I might have to check out some more of their stuff still.
Old time
I liked the first couple songs but then the rest was pretty meh. Still cool to be one of the first branded psychedelic music. Rating: 2.8
one good single, rest conventional
Of it’s time
++: Reverberation (Doubt), Fire Engine, Thru the Rhythm, You Don't Know, Monkey Island, Tried to Hide +: You're Gonna Miss Me, Kingdom of Heaven +-: Roller Coaster, Splash 1 (Now I'm Home), Don't Fall Down 7,0/10
A couple good tracks but some atrocious ones mixed in.
Typical 60's acid rock.
2.5 Stars
A pretty good piece of proto-psychadelic surf rock. What sounded like a guy making mouth bongo sounds on several of the tracks was an especially nice touch.
60s psychedelic hippie music, jangly guitars, not bad listened to the Stereo LP Version, as Wikipedia says that was the band's preferred track order
It's weird that the electric jug is or was a thing. Interesting, but a bit gimmicky. Some genuinely good songs with nice guitar work
Qué es ese sonido medio sintoso que se repite en todos los temas? En fin, si bien no me llevo nada de acá, fué placentero conocerlo. Nota: 3.0
Feels like a pioneering sound that would make rock bands like The Rolling Stones and Blue Oyster Cult famous. These guys pre-date the latter and only came out a couple years after the stones. Sounds like the most beloved classic bands of the 60s with a psychedelic twist. First couple tracks took me some getting used to, but once I got adjusted, I enjoyed this more than I expected. I really like Splash 1, favorite song in the album. Again, better than expected, but I don’t think it needs to be as long as it is at 90 minutes. Lost me around the 40 minute mark, if it was closer to that length, I might’ve rated it higher.
Pretty good for the genre. I kind of liked this.
Pyschedelic and funky. I was thrown off because the 2008 remaster of this had almost another hour's worth of tracks on it consisting of the original mixes and alternate versions.
Sounded like The Rolling Stones at points which is NEVER a bad thing
Wasn’t very psychedelic
Decent average 60s psych/garage rock. Really didn’t need that bloke on the jug going DODODODODODODODODODO every fucking song
Early innovators of the psychedelic genre, alongside the Byrds on Fifth Dimension and the Beatles on Revolver. The 13th Floor Elevators were notable for their unique deployment of reverb and fuzz that would go on to inspire the sounds of ZZ Top, Television, and Spaceman 3. Thier sound was a reflection of the increasingly prevalent culture surrounding psychedelic drug use at the time, as it captured the unique and mind-melting experience of a "trip". I've never done psychedelics before, but I can only imagine it's like this. The 13th Floor Elevators are also notable for their electric jug, which gives many songs a unique layer of weirdness. The songs are alright. The sound is unique but it got a little stale after a while because, frankly, these guys aren't the best songwriters.
These guys have some really cool sounds. Never heard of them before, but I’m glad I was finally introduced - 59 years later.
It’s fine, nothing to write home or get too excited about though
Good sound but again I'm not sure any song really stands out. The first is memorable but perhaps because I've heard it before. (24 known/48 new)
custom_rating: 7
I already like "You're Gonna Miss Me" thanks to High Fidelity, but never took the time to seek out this album. Now that I've heard it, overall I find it to be more interesting than enjoyable. I can hear where it's influenced other bands like The Stooges or Pixies or Velvet Underground, so clearly it's got historical value. As an album experience, however, it's very uneven with some songs either grating on the nerves or simply overstaying their welcome. Clearly it didn't earn them a new fan in me, but I can respect it despite not loving it.
This has the vibe of 60s music that is better than this.
For a psychedelic rock album made in the 2000s I was surprised how much it sounded like it came from the 60s, big nostalgia factor but to me it was alright, not the best psych rock album I've listened to but it's solid
Synes sgu den var meget fed, god skramlet lyd der får det til at føles lidt punket
"I Met Roky Erickson" was the first time I heard of him. At some point I also discovered the album "The Psychedelic Sounds of ..." but I wasn't really impressed. It's very psychedelic, sixties. With a real experimental touch without not being rock. The 'Jug' sounds special, but not unknown, the 'howling' is a bit weirder. OK, enough said. No wonder Roky Erickson also stands for 'Horror Rock'. 3 stars, I can listen to that now and then
Man this would have crushed if I did a ton of heroin in the year 1972 Best Song: Don't Fall Down Rating: 5.0/10 3 Stars
Enjoyed it. Nothing amazing but a good album.
Du rock psyché un peu dégueu, un peu garage, rigolo mais enregistré avec le cul.
I surprisingly quite enjoyed this one! What I imagine the Beatles on crack would sound like Lost a star though for the horrendous screeching and wailing 3 ⭐️
This is so 60’s. Just very typical psychedelic rock that you would expect in the background of any 60s TV show. Nothing earthshattering.
It’s got that surfer rock guitar style going for it, otherwise I get a little lost in it, and not in a good way. Very similar instrumentation and song progression throughout; lacks dynamics.
What is that Sound? "DaCoDaGooDaGooDACoo"!
Sounds like soundtrack music. Fun and raspy
Roller Coaster is a jam! Fuck yeah Roky Erickson!
Historically certainly interesting. The music is also ok. It probably would have sounded much greater in 1966 ... but now, almost 60 years later, it is not so interesting any more. Still a quite good and listenable 60s record.
easy listen but not something id come back to
Pretty good, moderately interesting, likably rough around the edges, but let's not go too crazy with the Roky as misunderstood or overlooked creative genius nonsense.
I've listened to this before in a trippy state of mind. Sober it doesn't have the same feel at all though. Still good just not as easy for me to get through.
Absolute mayhem this album, not having that it was recorded in 2010. It's the most early 70s thing I've ever heard so it hits the brief of being a psychedelic sounds mash. Maddest thing about this is that they seem to have brought their pet pigeon along to the recording, and also the siren off the ghost buster car. They're included in every single track, mental. Still a decent listen though. Mid 3.
Good album. Very 60s album from a recording standpoint. I detect hints of Jefferson Airplane and the Rolling Stones from that same time frame. It was kind of interesting listening to the mono recordings and then the stereo versions.
Some good sounds.
A few really good riffs, and some interesting psychedelic sounds, but I’m not sure how well it’s held up in relation to other Acid Rock from the same period. It’s certainly impressive that it’s a good year or two older than Hendrix or The Doors, but the only individual song that I felt warranted a second listen was Kingdom of Heaven, which was heavy and stormy in the way the best Doom Metal and Neo-Psychedelia I like is
Kuuntelin ekan levyn, Roller Coaster listalle
I have mixed feelings about it...
Starts out really strong and then fades, wasn't really memorable after the first three tracks
The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators is actually decent in places for yet another 60s psychedlic album, it has some really fun elements to it, Roller Coaster and Fire Engine are bouncy little numbers with some rock grooves in there, vocals are interesting, basically there's a fair bit of character to this in places, it just doesn't run right through it. I can't be doing with like 90% of this genre but then something like this comes along and I'll have some of that, 3/5.
This is decent - definitely in the top half of the bunch of 60s psychedelic albums that we've had, but probably not quite in the top tier. The wobbly sound gets a bit wearing after a while, but not disastrously so. I wish it had a bit more oomph and energy behind it - the sound is quite cool but it could do with a bit more pace in most places. 3/5.
I wanted to like this more but on some tracks (Rollercoaster) the jug effect was just too much. Overall like but could be better.
Psycho yummy or not, not for me to decide.
The artwork is groovy! The album was alright, but I got distracted by googling what an "electric jug" was... turns out that it's literally a bottle... um, okay. Oh yeah, the album, yeah it was alright for psychedelic 60s.
good but didn’t hit me like i wanted it to
Must say that this album feels quite fresh for being released in 1966. 'You're Gonna Miss Me' stood out as a pretty decent track, otherwise I found it a bit hard to find a particular track I enjoyed. It was more the overall sound and feeling that worked for me. Feels like an album that slots in right in the middle of the scale. Nothing that I will return to probably, but also not something that I disliked.
This has likeable elements to it but could really do with decent production to bring them out . And ditch the electric jug which is irritating and distracting
Psychedelic rock from the 13th floor.
"Oh man", I thought. "Another late 60s bunch of dudes. Imagine my surprise." It wasn't that bad though. No pan pipes? Thank god. Electric jug? Now I'm curious Of course you should hear this before you die. I thought this would be a two, but it's a three. Could be the Stones or the Animals on an off day. Not bad. Three stars.
p96. 1996. 3 stars. Strangely alluring cross between early Stones and LSD infused riffs, with Roky Erikson channelling his inner Mick Jagger. Set against that we have dated production and too much filler.
3,5
Eh this wasn’t all that
mono or not serious listener...
I kinda just came in and out of it with no real feeling other than that electric jug… I don’t know honestly, it was certainly trippy but in terms of psych rock mehhh
Un rock psicodélico bien pionero. Vibes a Janis Joplin, Kong Crimson... Calidad de audio pésima.
I realised I wasn't going to enjoy a lot of this album when I was in the weird alien sound section of the second song, but felt like I had at least got 5 songs in. I do quite 60s psychedelic music, and I do enjoy elements of this album. However, I didn't find it to be an easy listen.
Very good, especially for 1966
I do not care for the vocals at any point. The rest of the band does a good enough job with jamming. No lows or highs to really speak of. Some of the persisting background effects were neat. This album kinda came and went.
Whatever that one fluttery noise was in the background of most of the songs was cracking me up it was all that I could pay attention to. That album was a pretty standard sounding 60s psych album that didn't really stand out to me.
I downloaded this one on my phone last year because I heard it featured an electric jug lol. The jug adds some weirdness to it that's for sure. Such a weird thing to display all over an album. It's a cool sound and random but doesn't do enough to push it over the edge of a 3. Old psychedelia is so odd.
Punchy tunes from the 60s; raw and musical. They use a certain sound gimmick which was cool on one song but then kept using it; becomes purely annoying.
October 26, 2024 HL: “Roller Coaster”, “Reverberation” Maybe too harsh given I liked this album, but the album artwork is the most interesting thing about it
Really enjoyed this at first, but the longer I listened, the wierder it got for me...
Psych rock. Its good, but nothing that would make it better than anything else in the genre
ez egészen jó volt (eddig a legjobb a mindenféle pszichedelikus albumok közül sztem), de nem különösebben izgalmas.
This is what I was worried about when playing The United States Of America. This kind of psychedelic stuff is not for me. Pretty meh.
Not bad
The sounds were, indeed, psychedelic.
Someone has had mushrooms in the studio. Good stuff.
Thoughts before listening: 60's psych garage rock led by Roky Erickson (I believe). One of those bands that I recognize by name, but where I don't know if I have actually heard any of the music. Review: Okay, so I definitely recognize this first song "You're Gonna Miss Me". This is sloppy, simple rock n roll with psychedelic flourishes mixed in throughout. Its easy to see where the through line is from this to punk rock in the 70s while also very much being a 60s sound. I can also understand why this wasn't very commercial. This just sounds like underground music, which is interesting since a lot of 60s underground music has been lost to time while the 13th Floor Elevators are making lists like this one. This is 3-stars
Fun early psychedelic. I probably won't come back to this. But it's a good listen.
For Psychedelic that sure was boring
That was unique
Solid throughout but nothing matches the opening highs of You’re Gonna Miss Me.
кислотный диджей хей кислотный мьюзик хей
Slowly realizing with this project that I really vibe with psychedelic music. Not that much with this album in particular.
Was enjoying it for the first 20 minutes or so then felt it became a bit self indulgent
Needs more listening and analysis. Can say it is sonically prescient though, like damn. 1967? Might be the first EVER psychedelic rock band.
Nice and trippy with a hint of garage rock. Well done.
Solid 3.5
this was a raw, short psychedelic piece, i enjoyed a lot of the tracks dm it was an easy listen
I can say with absolute certainty that some people made this album, and that I listened to it. Beyond that, I've got nothing. So totally unmemorable.
Are you up for some psychedelic rock? This links to the remastered double album, so hope you're ready for 90 minutes of it.
Interesting for its time period, but not my favorite.
Standard 1960s phsychadelic rock. Groovy, baby. Far out, man - but I don't really dig it.
As 60s psychedelia goes it was pretty good
Love you’re gonna miss me but the rest was so monotonous
Could not entirely get into it, nevertheless an interesting album.
Not bad but a bit too out there for me.
Kinda fun but not for a whole album for me.
Vergeetbare 3 dus.
Again quite enjoyable!
right on, man
This album is an interesting time capsule for the early days of the psychedelic rock movement. The music itself is okay. It's certainly not the height of psychedelic rock, but it has the elements. The production quality of the album isn't great, and, frankly, neither is the song writing. However, some things are more than the sum of their parts, and I think this album is a worthy inclusion on this list even if it's not all that engrossing to listen to. You've gotta walk before you can run 3/5
I’ve had more psychedelic experiences watching the freaking Boss Baby. I’m kidding I just don’t know what else to say about this
Not incredibly interesting to me but kinda fun!
pretty cool! never heard of these guys and enjoyed this one
“Oh boy, another 60s rock album” is what I would have said if I didn’t know any better. But I actually do on those particular day. I have a rather interesting story regarding this album. When I got my first vinyl and had decided I wanted to start collecting, I did research on ways of keeping them safe and organized. In one of the videos I found, a man held up this exact album. And I was so intrigued by the cover, that I then had to find out what the album was. Of course, when I did actually find it, I never listened to it. Funny that it’s all coming full circle now years later. So I’ll admit that I was mildly excited to hear this finally. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s the greatest psych album ever like some may tell you. But I do think it does a good job at capturing what people think this genre should sound like. It’s probably the most legitimately psychedelic rock I’ve heard. In fact, these guys were the first ones to coin the term, and label their own music as such. The production is rough around the edges. And I’m being pretty generous. It has not aged very well. It definitely goes to show how much the industry has improved in that regard. By as a genuine “psychedelic experience”, it does a pretty solid job. The poor production actually adds to this swirling feeling. It really feels like you are caught inside the album cover, with all of these magnificent colors flying rapidly around your head. This is also aided by the jug instrument one of the band members plays. I’ve never heard of this thing. And because of the mix, you almost can’t even hear it. But when you, it’s the wackiest sounding thing ever. Even with all of that, I couldn’t see myself recommending this to someone who wants to jump into the genre. Because for the average person, it’s either going to be too much or not enough. Many will get the idea this represents the genre as a whole, which is not the case. Rating: 6/10
Well crafted, and I can see that it definitely set the pattern for psych rock from the 60s.
This was pretty good. I definitely like 60s psychedelic rock better than 70s psychedelic rock, but it was still a little too rough around the edges for me (which I know is intentional, but still).
Very cool retro, psych rock sound. This is definitely something I’m into and was not previously familiar with this crew. Wild and insane at times, goofy even - a reminder that it’s okay to let ourselves loose from time to time. We are human and it’s records like this that help remind us of that. Life isn’t meant to be so serious all the time! Solid record.
Jammy
Jammy
Just some straight up psychedelic rock. Nothing too cohesive about it as an album but a good collection of songs.
twas ok, but nothing particularly original or groundbreaking.
"Don't fall down" was weird, but the others were okay - akin to chill 70s rock, with just a few psychedelic tweaks
I have never heard of this album before, but I really enjoyed it. This was great early Psychedelic rock. Favorite song was definitely a Roller Coaster. It’s interesting listening to this because you can hear so many influences of modern bands: everyone from Radiohead to B.R.M.C. to Brian Jonestown Massacre. this is a listen again !
*aggressive howler monkey noises*
Unrefined psychedelic weirdness, but a perfectly pleasant listen.
Nice proto-psychedelic garage rock
They have the guy going “doogadoogadoot” in the background working overtime
Was kind of dreading this but it wasn’t horrible. “You don’t know” was clearly the standout song. shit slapped!
I'm starting to feel like the random choices are saying "are you sure you don't like 60s folk? how about psychedelica?". I get that just about every genre sounds 90% the same with a few standouts that transcend their categorization and do really interesting things. This is not one of those standouts.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm half 78 half 52 65/100
Pleasant enough sounds but nothing substantial. Maybe I don't like 60s music
Typical 60’s psychedelic rock sound. Not bad but didn’t stand out.
I don't believe I've ever heard of The 13th Floor Elevators before this so I went in blind. Obviously, the name of the album and the cover art gave away the psychedelic experience I was about to have (while driving to and from work...). And what a groovy time it was man. Roller Coaster, Splash 1, Don't Fall Down, and You Don't Know were my favorites. I think by the time I got to You Don't Know I started to really hear a strange instrument. It was like a vibration of some kind with a rhythm. Upon looking up the Wikipedia page for the album I saw that one of the band members played an "Electric jug." I needed to know more and honestly the electric jug presence on the internet is very low. But this lead me to Tommy Hall's Wikipedia page where I find out he is now a registered republican and never wants to play the electric jug again. Anyway, the electric jug was cool on one track but by the end of the album I was kind of getting annoyed by it. So no wonder it never took off. We could have had Taylor Swift backed by electric jug. We could have had emo bands of the early 2000's moping over an electric jug sound. But luckily for all of us the Boomers in the 60's decided the electric jug just wasn't meant to become the most popular instrument. Best thing they ever did. Thanks Boomers.
01) You're Gonna Miss Me - 7,5 02) Roller Coaster - 6,5 03) Splash 1 (Now I'm Home) - 7,0 04) Reverberation (Doubt) - 7,0 05) Don't Fall Down - 7,0 06) Fire Engine - 6,0 07) Thru the Rhythm - 7,0 08) You Don't Know - 7,0 09) Kingdom of Heaven - 6,5 10) Monkey Island - 6,5 11) Tried to Hide - 6,5 TOTAL: 6,77 (68/100) Current ranking: 182/251 Is electric jug this bloop bloop bloop bloop sound in the background? Will it be in every song? It's already annoying after the second one. All in all, a solid album with a typical sixties sound. BTW, I don't think this kind of music was ever played in elevators.
Psicodélico anos 60. Estilo the Who no começo...por aí...legalzinho
It had highs and lows
good in mono
This is a pretty fun first time listen. Unique blend of 60s-centric psychedelic surf rock with a garage band feel. You can hear some similarities with Zappa, the Animals and maybe even some Doors. Some songs are a little tiresome but overall I enjoyed this one.
Not bad.
I just don’t care for it
Fun! (but not all the time)
This was so stereotypical of 60s music that I spent the whole runtime imagining it being played over a Woodstock montage or at some point in once upon a time in Hollywood or throughout a 1968 counter culture documentary. The music being this broad is both fun to listen to but also gets a little bland after a while. I enjoyed the more bluesy stuff in kingdom of heaven but overall it was all fine.
While this probably blew minds in the 60's, I just don't vibe with it.
Psychedelic rock is an excellent genre and this is a great album that starts off strong, but it lost momentum a little and failed to continue to thrill us.
Not a great album but I kinda sorta liked some of it, then I kinda sorta didn’t like some of it.
Solid early psych but not mind blowing.
Historical curiosity but nothing more than that. Interesting but doesn't really have staying power. Mostly forgettable and done better by later artists.
What a trip, eh? :) I'll admit I've never heard of The 13th Floor Elevators, and I'm pretty sure I've never heard anything from this album before, but that doesn't stop it from being a fun album to listen to. Not too many of the songs really stood out for me, but I enjoyed "Reverbation (Doubt)" and "Through the Rhythm" a bit more than the others. I'm not sure I ever figured out what their "electric jug" instrument sounds like in their music, sadly (unless it was that weird reverb-kazoo-like sound), but I'm guessing that Tommy Hall's insistence on using LSD to gain a higher consciousness was more trend-setting than his jug....
Psychedelic . Normal.
This sounded to me a bit like what the Jimi Hendrix Experience without Jimi might sound like. Some nice ideas, but not really many good songs. Fave Tracks: Don’t Fall Down, You Don’t Know 3.2/5
nice enough.
weird, enjoyed the psychedelic sound, but the jug was weird.
I like The 13th Floor Elevators, but I don't love them! You're Gonna Miss Me is a classic, but it's the one standout on the album. It's not a classic album, but again that's a classic song. Liked songs added: - You're Gonna Miss Me
Best served with a piping hot bowl of psychedelic delights
Hmm, you can hear the raw, experimental psychedelic rock of the 60's here, but it's very foundational. It's a good listen if you're interested in the origins of psychedelic music. It's not completely "refined", however.
I think there is a lot to like on this album, particularly the music. I don't like the lead vocals all that much and the "pscychadelic sounds' in the background remind me of bad 60's and 70's science fiction movies. Still I think 3 stars or C+ would be how I would rate it.
pretty cool - didn’t know Eric b had an album like this.
not actively against it it’s just not what i’d reach for
Weird noises throughout Distract from so-so psych rock On too long album
Bello è bello, magari non eccezionale.
sounds ok. cluttered at times and didn't wow me once
I actually liked this, which I wasn’t expecting. Among the best 60’s psychedelica I’ve heard.
I'm giving this badboy an extra star as one of them plays a FUCKING JUG!
Kinda quirky, kinda fun.
It's fine. I don't think I was missing anything by only hearing the Nuggets/High Fidelity song.
first listen nothing too crazy, very...safe
которые песни повторяются но вслепую казалось что примерно всё это одна песня. норм но зацепиться не за что
It's ok. A but much.
Psychy
I don’t often get albums from 60’s artists I’ve never heard of. So I was excited to hear this, especially with such an eccentric name and clearly psychedelic sound (just read the album cover). This was alright. Standard psychedelic and garage rock fare for the time. Better than most anyone who tried to reproduce the sound later on. Loved the inclusion of unexpected instrumented like the harmonica. The vocalist also definitely gave me Jagger vibes at times. Overall though, I dunno. I wasn’t taken with this one like I expected. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some great tracks (see below), but this didn’t standout against other stuff from this era for me. 3 stars for being a solid representation of the genre/period, but nothing more since I wasn’t crazy about it. Standout tracks: You’re Gonna Miss Me, Roller Coaster, Splash 1, Fire Engine
I wanted to like this. A 60s psychedlic rock album that I'd never heard before and is considered one I "must hear before I die"? Sure! Really liked the first song "You're Gonna Miss Me", but afterwards it just got a little messy and muddled. Nothing too bad, but nothing after the first song really kept my interest either. 3.5 stars
Fun psychadelic rock
Decent.
Pas mal mais faut pas être dans de mauvaises dispositions parce que l'eletric jug ça peut vraiment vous prendre à rebrousse poil. J'aime bien le principe mais c'est trop répétitif au final...
The title promises and the music delivers exactly that. Some of the best Garage Rock available. “You’re Gonna Miss Me” is an indisputable stone cold classic, with that sloppy opening riff and scream—just eternally enjoyable.
Cool album. Too repetitive all songs sound about the same but a little more heavy that usual psychodelic rock. Good music to losten as a background but not a life changing album
very strange in a sometimes fun way but I thought it was mostly nonsense lol. However thats fine sometimes if youre in the mood.
This album makes me want to protest the war in Vietnam. I can't tell whether or not I like the straw-in-the-lid/hyena noise that's in most songs, I'm leaning towards no. I was curious so I found out it's an electric jug, kind of like blowing air over a bottle. They're kind of the only notable band to use it since the 1920s when jug bands were popular (not electric) so that's pretty cool. The name of the album and artist all check out. 7/10
A movie needledrop classic that immediately indicates the 60s are happening. It's a great example of the early psych formula: pulsating bass and droning open strings to induce a trance, some swirly whirly organ and very reverby guitars, a bit of fuzz to break from reality and some vaguely heady lyrics to suggest you open your mind and head out there. The songs borrow heavily from surf rock and chuck berry style blues rock, but arranged in the new trippy style. Play it loud and freak out the squares, man! Very funny that Zappa's debut album came out the same year and was already basically a parody of the California psych scene within months of it starting.
ok yeah sure it does sound like psychedelic elevator music
sounds pleasant
Psykadelisk rock.
Started to really enjoy it until this persistent wooba dooby dooby dooby dooby dooby noise started to be heard as almost there backing instrument in all the tracks and it just drove me up the wall. I listen to it all the way through and I did enjoy it but that stupid whoopie dooby dooby dooby dooby sound will prevent me from making it something that I would listen to on a regular basis
This was fun, but felt a little repetitive.
Good start, but trippy towards the end
Trippy double album
Tämän soundibändin koukkuisuuden voi välillä kyseenalaistaa, mutta jumalauta minkä soundin he onnistuvatkaan levylle tiivistämään. Parhaat biisit on muuten varattu alkuun ja loppuun: You're Gonna Miss Me (2:26 mittainen mini-mini-ooppera) ja Tried to Hide (tuurilla repäisty blues-succès).
Nice change of events but its enough for now
