Reviews (page 10 of 12)
It doesn’t quite sound like The Who, but instead like a band trying to figure out their sound and borrowing from what’s popular. There are some obviously iconic tracks and I think what makes them iconic is that they sound uniquely like The Who, but the other tracks are more easily forgotten and would be better served as part of a “Best of the 60s” compilation than an original album by a band.
It’s really hard to judge this album knowing how much “better” their later albums got. The direct “theft” of trad blues music is more obvious here anyway. I can’t say I enjoyed most of it and the Shout cover was particularly hard to enjoy.
I warmed up to it
OK, its the who
I thought this album rocked more than it did before listening back. Didn't realize how much the Who sounded like the Beatles in their early days
Good listen. few songs that i really enjoyed
Solid
Está bueno, pero soy de otra generación. No me encantó pero estuvo bueno.
I Don’t Mind // My Generation //
Solid album. More of that 60’s style sound than I really remember from the who.
I Don't Mind My Generation The Kids Are Alright
Couple of bangers and definitely influential, by and large too repetitive for easy listening in my opinion. Not crazy about the vocals in early British rock although I liked the bluesy ones
Not my style, but it wasn't bad
Solid album I enjoyed it
Know the single, not the album at all. It was okay overall. The songs were catchy and pretty good, but not my style and couldn't grab me emotionally like many others. Considering this is the debut, I'd say a very strong start and the Singles went out with a bang. The Ox is a great closer.
Yes, The Who played a part in hard rock and punk (see their Live at Leeds performance, for example), but this album is mostly significant for historical purposes. And that matters some, but it doesn't carry this album far enough. 3 stars.
i hate this band but this album isn’t bad
I like this album a lot, reminds me a bit of the clash
Title track is an all timer, but the rest of the album is too basic, too garagey compared to what The Who would do later. Big Sam Cooke influence in the vocals, more than I’ve heard on other albums by the band.
Bom.
A few mid songs. Some good ones
Het debuutalbum van The Who! All in all, echt een prima te verteren rock album. FAVO: I don't mind, My generation, It's not true
Natuurlijk, The Who kan niet ontbreken op dit lijstje (*zucht*). Brits? Check Rock? Favorieten: I Don't Mind, The Ox
Classic Rock and Roll.
Sounds tame by modern standards, but it's got the same proto-punk energy as The Kingsmen. Bit of a hotch-potch but very listenable.
Early Who. Very garage rock inspired. Really represents the mod scene that was happening in England in the mid 60s.
Decent stuff, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it. Really captures what I think must have been the energy of the era. I wasn't there, so who knows :)
My Generation is such an iconic song. It’s giving early Beatles vibes. I didn’t get to listen to it as much as I would’ve liked but still a solid album.
The Who is pretty unknown where I'm from. I know they were part of the big UK bands from the 60s British Invasion era, I know "My Generation" and some other hits (mainly because they were used in the CSI series). I like the sound, but it does seem pretty generic to me. From what I've read the band was still trying to find their own sound and it shows. My Generation is clearly the most outstanding one in terms of style, but the rest of the album is just ok and it would be difficult to discern it from other similar groups from the era. I also found it a bit cringeworthy when the vocalist pretends to be black at some of the tracks on the B side. The drummer is a beast though - there's plenty of creative stuff going on and a lot of fills which still do not distract from the rest of the music on the album. Not really something I'll be looking to go back to.
One of thoe all time favourite classic bands and albums, quintessential to music history. Fully recognizing the importance of it but just wasn't feeling it today.
OMG after listening to this album, I went through their most-played songs. They sang the original version of Behind Blue Eyes that Limp Bizkit remade, one of my favorite songs. It has been a while since I heard the janky, cheerful, upbeat piano and flawed unsynthesized music. This is such a lovely time when music feels real compared to what is produced these days- a combination of various electronic beeps
3 or 4 great songs with a lot of forgettable stuff including a blatant Kinks rip-off. The great songs are remarkably good though.
Nothing much to this album except My Generation which surprised me compared to their later works
High energy, listened to it while working
I too wish boomers had died before they got old!
Not my favorite The Who album but still a good one. It feels like a mix of Hollies and late Beatles.
solid rock debut, still some more work to do
Another intro album from a legendary band! They're definitely leaning more into their psychedelic and power pop roots here; they hadn't solidified their hard rock sound yet that they'd ultimately become more famous for. If you listen closely, though, you can hear elements of that sound. I think this is a good, worthy exploration because it shows the solid, talented roots of one of the top rock acts of all time, but ultimately, the music here is just okay.
🧙🏻♂️
Title track and ‘The Kids Are Alright’ are stand out tracks. The rest of the album had a few surprises, notably ‘The Ox’. A real mish-mash of styles on here but some lovely harmonies and hints of the bigger rock sounds that were to come later (and I prefer!)
Not trying to cause a big sensation…
3,5
Brilliant title song, rest a bit meh
I thought I would like it more.
S'fine
the only who album i know is who's next, and then also "who are you" from the album of the same name. surprised me seeing how popular the title track from this is. but this is pretty nice, good covers.
This is a difficult one to grade. It's a lot better than a lot of my 3's, but i'm not sure if it's interesting enough to be a 4. At this time, I have only really listened to the Who Best of, and Who's Next. I remember Who's Next being a lot better than this. But this album has the foundations of the band, I assumed, that they become. I like the briefness of the songs and the album in general, but the two better known songs 'My Generation' and 'The Kids Are Alright' stand out more than the rest quality wise. The bluesy balladness of 'I Don't Mind' is interesting and a highlight, with a couple of parts that remind me of She's So Heavy. I think many aspects of this album could grow on me with revisits, but I can't imagine revisiting it too often. It reminds me more of very early Beatles music, and I feel like by '65 they'd already moved on from this kind of thing, but the positives on this album outweigh the negative. I'm gonna say... HIGH THREE
This album is too straight for me but it's not bad
I like the who. This album, besides my generation and the kids are alright, was very... generic? I'd give the entire album a 2.5, and rounding up.
Not my fav band but I liked this more than Tommy
My generation is a cool song. The Who hasn't really been a band I've gotten into. There's some decent rock n roll here but nothing super special.
Not great, not terrible. First couple tracks were pretty solid and got me excited but most of the album is just standard mid-60s brit rock/pop. My Generation is the clear standout, also enjoyed the bluesy vocals on I'm A Man. Keith Moon's drumming stands out to me. I found the mixing was weird, turn up the piano (free piano!)
Early Who with almost all songs sounding the same. My Generation is obviously an all time classic but the rest of the album is filled with forgettable songs that are only fun to listen to because they recall the sound of the actual good sounds from the early days of the band. The opening track actually rips off the riff from Anyway Anywhere Anyhow, unless it actually predates it or something. Legal Matter is probably my least favourite moderately famous Who track.
Classic sounds, the title track stands out for me. Good not great.
First time listening to this album. It is interesting how much they grew out of the heavily Beatles influence in this album and created their own sound in later albums and in turn, go on to influence other bands that followed The Who.
Can you believe that the British media tried to turn mods into the devils of youth subculture once upon a time? Kids who look like THESE goobers, supposedly violent hooligans? British people are so fucking stupid. Anyway, it's alright, but just feels like a very undeveloped version of what a lot of bands would end up carrying with them into the 1970s-- The Who themselves included. The title track is fun as hell (and probably the reason it's on here), but the rest just feels overwhelmingly eh, despite how much energy it keeps trying to give me. A mod-ular 3/5.
Better than some of it's contemporaries. A bit of a harder edge. Outside of the title track and "The Kids are Alright" a pretty forgettable album. One wonders if without those songs it would be considered for this list.
Sketches of where they were going to go. A few real iconic songs.
For me it's like Aftermath - a few good singles and the rest is a band finding / building their classic sound. You do get a taste of later Pete guitar playing on the fills in Out in the Street. 3/5
Straight up British rock. Enjoyable, nothing mind blowing. My Generation does have an urgency that would not really be replicated for a few more years. Moon is the stand out here. He was fully cooked with his primal abandon even at this point. Townsend is neither the songwriter or force on guitar he would become. Daltrey eventually becomes one of the better rock singers but isn’t there yet. It’s funny, the apple blurb states the band didn’t like it much, feeling it was rushed which may be some of its charm. In reality, except for a few exceptions (Who’s Next), The Who are a band I like on paper more than I do in reality. Almost every album feels like it is lacking compared to the various compilations or their live sound which gets at that unhinged urgency of My Generation or It’s Not True. It does its job well though and they are a competent enough band.
I would sum this up as a couple of poignant tracks (My Generation, The Kids Are Alright) mixed in with some half rate James Brown covers and then a bunch of average filler. This early in their career, the Who were really just a singles band. Given the year of its release, I would say it’s “heaviness” is somewhat revolutionary, but overall I think this one has been vastly overrated.
The Who's debut album is lopsided. They definitely were the loudest, heaviest band at the time (or at least the loudest that I know of), but they were still playing off of 60s RnB, blues, and pop, and they weren't great with those types of songs. The vocal harmonies are particularly rough; Roger Daltrey sounds great, but Townshend and Entwistle's backing vocals don't sound so good and don't sit well in the mix, title track excepted. Still, there's enough here that's worth a listen, but just barely.
Yeah look... I liked it more than "Who's Next", but I'm still not feeling The Who all that much. It's garlic and onions being browned in a pan. An essential base, and a wonderful smell, but I don't enjoy eating them as they are.
Almost a 4, but some parts have really aged, otherwise, rock-y fun! Standout Tracks - I Don't Mind - A Legal Matter - Instant Party
nothing really special but I enjoyed it
Decent album. "My Generation" is a classic, as is "The Kids Are Alright." 3.5 stars.
Not my favourite Who songs on this one, but it's still a pretty great album.
Never listened to this album in full before. It was enjoyable, and a strong debut album, though I prefer the band’s later music.
So unlike where they ended up, it’s strange to listen to. Beatles influence and 50’s bubblegum rock. A few songs hint at the good things to come.
It was non eventful.
A little different for a Who album. Seems like some more experimentation and guest artists. It was all kind of middle of the road for me though.
I love the title track.
I’d say this album is one of the early punk albums. Good stuff. But not the best who.
Helt okej. Slop trummor
Good!
Was ok not my favorite WHO music sounded kinda like they ripped the vinyl.
I liked a few of the songs. Like most of the stuff I've heard from The Who, their albums have some great songs and some easily skippable stuff.
A better version of the beatles? And I don’t even rate the beatles that high
Cool
Literally only know this band from the song "Baba O'Riley" They definitely get bonus points for being an English band that doesn't sound English. This has "My Generation" on it so at the very least it is a 3. I don't have a whole lot to say about this album. It's pretty generic rock at this point. At the time it was probably very influential. 3/5
Before I checked the year this was released, I was thinking it sounds like mid-career Beatles (Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver era). It turns out I was correct, since this came out in 1965. I liked it, but I prefer their later stuff. I was mostly distracted the whole time thinking about how much they sounded like a Beatles knock off.
Me gusta.
The Who is classic, but just not my favorite of the 60s classic rock bands. It's a good album just not my favorite from the era.
Classic rock, there are some decent tunes on there but I wouldn't be revisiting much
Two big classic and some great tracks as well. I just love that guitar tone.
much better when not literally trying to sound like black artists
Good, some catchy songs and a somewhat unique take on some songs
Encompassing the sound of 1965, but better awaits them
My Generation is a good song. The rest of this was meh. I understand why, per the Wikipedia, the band themselves weren’t a huge fan of this album. I certainly doubt that it’s their best work.
"My Generation" clearly the most popular, recognizable song on the album. I didn't particularly care for the rest of the songs; in fact, the album is too long; less can often be more. Otherwise very mid-to-late 60s sound. 7/10.
My Generation has always been a banger but I wasn't expecting as much honky-tonk ish sound from the rest of the album. I know the Beatles/Stones/Who drew heavily from blues but not my favorite sound
took me a couple songs to get into it but i liked a good amount of the second half. the only thing i knew about The Who before this was baba oreilly and this definitely wasn’t that
Like this one better than the who sell out. Less over the top with all the British stereotypes. More just a band making good music. Didn't know much about the who before, cool to know who they are better now
I was really interested in this as a historical document and getting to hear how The Who sounded at their début. Beyond that it’s not an album I find particularly distinctive, or one that I’d want to listen to again, besides the iconic title track.
The debut studio album from The Who...yes, I get why this album would appear on a list such as this. I was excited to give it a listen. The first track did grab my attention, but overall I was a bit disappointed. I guess it sounded a little unpolished or maybe it's just an immature The Who, I don't know exactly, but underwhelming for me.
I'm not a huge Who fan to begin with, so I wasn't too eager to listen to their debut album. But it was actually pretty decent, the pop rock cuts are pretty fiery, but when they dabble in like...r&b and soul sounds it's kinda cringe honestly. Still, not a bad record all around.
Liked it better than I anticipated. Typically can't really abide the Who, but this one seemed fairly un Who like. 3/5
So far it is unique for sure. Vaguely nice radio friendly harmonies and very "Beatles-like". However, the drums are layered, loud, and intense. Almost bring in some vibes of The Clash and Ramones before their time. The vocals are okay, they kind of blend together and the songs don't really pop or stand out. The exception being the title single which is definitely the most put together. Overall, it felt like a decent debut album but one that was a little rough around the edges compared to what they would accomplish later. 3/5
I change my opinion about The Who they don’t suck
*The Good’s Gone
A nice little introduction to the who, had some great moments for each of the instruments that let them shine and a sampling of what Rodger can do vocally through rock, blues, more of a pop rock and a proto punk with My generation.
Some good songs, some borderline offensive songs in terms of appropriating blues. Getting past the offensive parts, there is some radically different music here that pulls it away from the music of this era.
No strong feelings either way?
Ok
I don't think I've heard this full album before, solid
Best Song: The Ox. I found the sheer musicality (in particular the piano) really entertaining. Kind of would have preferred a whole album of this track. Worst Song: The Good's Gone. I never understand what compels a dynamic band like The Who to try such a monotonous song. Overall: Gotta say I expected more. It's fun enough, but it's mostly just fairly typical British rock without much unique to make it stand out. It's not unpleasant, but just a bit dull.
It was alright. A bit generic in sound across the board, but definitely very signature style of the era. If there is an album that really captures the early rock era of the UK, this would definitely be one of them.
J'ai envie de péter une guitare "The Kids are Alright" me frustre, à chaque fois je pense que c'est "All my loving" des Beatles et puis non ça existait pas lol "I'm a Man" a clairement la meilleure instru de l'album
Great debut album!
A little all over the place. When it hits, it's very good. Too much of it is Beatles lite and I don't care for the r&B covers at all.
The Who come out of the gate swinging and hit a respectable double. They’re not quite the titans of rock they’d become just a few years later, but they’re full of fire and clearly know their blues influences.
Solid proto-garage rock, the the blues numbers can be a bit meh. The hard-hitting instrumental closer is fun
Younger generations always think the old guard is trying to put them down. Older generations often don’t dig what they’re trying to say. The Boomers who wrote “My Generation” in 1965 thought the Silent and Greatest Generations just didn’t get them. Now those Boomers are trying to put Gen Z and Gen Alpha down, but the kids are alright and they wish the Boomers would just fade away. Well, ok, the kids aren’t totally alright. They’re addicted to smartphones and social media. But just like in 1965, they wish their parents and grandparents would step aside and take their outdated ideas, values, and traditions with them. Aside from the title track and “The Kids Are Alright,” The Who give off the impression that their generation didn’t have much of importance to say. Nothing else makes much of an impact, nothing else rises to the level of something their elders would try to put down. It's solid enough 60s power pop, but it’s not groundbreaking or culture-shifting. It was 1965, Beatlemania had already peaked, rock and roll was mainstream, and the Mods were into fashion and scooters. Gasp! Fashion and scooters!? Gramps just doesn’t get how cool your Vespa is? I do really like “My Generation” and “The Kids Are Alright,” though. I think a lot of my fondness for “The Kids Are Alright” comes from Pearl Jam covers, but The Who original is alright too.
From what I read, I’m underselling this album, but most of it sounds like pretty generic rock to me. La-La-La-Lies bugs me the most in this sense. My Generation (song) is an exception of course. It is loud, distorted, and obnoxious, and fabulously genre breaking. The same goes for The Ox, which even as an instrumental piece sounds like a Hendrix precursor.
Birkaç Şarkı: La-La-La Lies -> Hem melodisi hoş hem lyrics OLEY + nakarat kısmı çok güzel 'lalalalalalalieees' My generation -> başım ağrıdı nolur nolur dur artık (albümün hiti buymuş imdat) It's not true -> yine playful tekrarlar var, sırf o yüzden sardı The Good's gone -> not bad tbh Overall(6/10) Notability (5/10) Lyrics(5/10) Harmony(6/10) Cohesiveness(9/10) P.S. Albümün kapağı birisi Birmingham'dan k-pop grubu toplamaya çalışmış gibi
An okay album, with some out of time vocals & drums.
They're fine, and I won't turn them off, but I won't turn them on.
Definitely an interesting album with a lot of different styles, some I liked more than others. Less about the doo-wops but all about the songs carried by chunky heavy floor tom action.
Was really loving the first few songs and got excited, but then was mega let down by every song after my generation.
Generational wow. Couple of crackers but overall bit staid 60s!
Who's generation? Brexit baby boomers? 🤪 Still enjoy the hits, the rest didn't click with me as much.
It sounds like the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. Definitely not the Who I know: a lot more blatant influence of the blues and similarly arranged into standard repeated sections. They even said themselves it doesn't quite capture their sound or what their sound will become
Negated this to add Tommy and Who's Next? to the playlist.
not my favorite who album but I guess for the time it's okay
Leuk plaatje!
Not very exciting
It's 60s rock, you already know what it sounds like
The Who ei ole koskaan iskenyt erityisemmin, mutta onhan tämä menevää kamaa.
The songs aren't great, and some of them are a bit boring in how they're delivered. But there's a youthful authenticity to the whole thing, and my generation has never sounded better
It gave the Beatles, which surprised me considering the only music I’ve listened from The Who prior to this was you-know-what. It was solid, but nothing more than that. I will, however, be consistently returning to I Don’t Mind; that’s a pretty song.
Actually very surprised by the sound. It really showed the time period with a lot of 60s influence. With that said, a perfectly mid album, yet closer to a 6.5 out of 10 if we’re being specific. I think in later albums they decided they couldn’t be the Beatles so they switched up their sound a bit.
Definitely a high 3 for me. It’s always hard to get inside the mind of someone hearing this for the first time, and having their world changed. There are aspects of the sound that are just starting to get more progressive, for sure. The guitar tones in particular are starting to sound more biting, the drums more pushed and distorted (at times it feels like they’re literally pushing the recordings as hot as it can go). But for a listener today, this album feels like a point on the drive, a stop before the destination, for both harder music and The Who as a band. Still, I really enjoyed listening, and there are some catchy ones!
Its a great album in regards to the history of Rock & Roll, and as a recording engineer I recognize that the drive on the drums and guitar on a few of these cuts sounds amazing for mid-1960’s. However, to my ears its just not The Who’s best work. In particular I find the covers to be a bit bad. Really love some cuts (singles), but they still seem a bit buried in their pub rock mod phase, and their LP output hit higher heights years later.
Decent listen. Nothing special for me.
Where’s the book Pete?
Many great classics on the album. Listening to the entire album is a bit too much old school the Who rock for me though
Blues but LOUD!
It was pretty lit
3.5/5 Old Who albums just aren't as good as their later stuff. That being said, it is an excellent 60s Beatles-like album. Standouts: My Generation, The Kids are Alright I Don't Mind, The Good's Gone, La La La Lies, Much too Much, Please Please Please (The James Brown remake), Legal Matter
Not the revolutionary effect it used to have i guess.
good album. like loud early beatles. consistent album with an iconic song.
Good, but not great. The kids are all right and My generation are fab but the others are dispensable. It sits squarely in the ‘OK’ vein but for the classics that still resonate nearly 60 years later.
Decent debut album from the Who. My Generation and the Kids are Alright are the standouts
Doesn't really feel like they'd become The Who yet. 3/5
I loved The Who when I was a kid so it’s tough to rate, but if I’m gonna listen to British rock it’s gonna be Led Zeppelin or the stones. Some of these songs are nostalgic and cool. Not a big fan of the bo diddley cover.
This was a lot of fun to listen to. Some of these songs I know but I didn’t know they were by The Who.
The album is alright
2 standout singles and a lot of filler
I’ve never really understood how The Who got so big. I don’t mind some of the songs I’ve heard, but I’ve only really heard one song I’d consider to be good (Pinball Wizard). Despite this, I’m still interested to hear an album in full to see if I can try to grasp what it is that others love. Songs I already knew: My Generation Favourites: I Don’t Mind, The Kids Are Alright Unfortunately for me, I’m yet to really see what all the full is about. It’s not that there are any awful songs, but nothing really clicked with me. I found the vocals quite annoying a lot of the time - is Roger Daltrey considered a poor singer or is that a controversial opinion? As I’m sure you can tell, I’m not going to be rushing back to this album any time soon. It was mostly fine with occasional good bits, but there was nothing amazing to be found here.
I could hear The Who becoming more of The Who that they would become. This sounds trite when written out, but I stand by it. The beginning of the album sounded to me like a lot of other British invasion bands of the same era including The Beatles. After I had that thought I listened to Revolver, which came out the same year as this album and it was not the same at all. But I will leave that to talk about for when Revolver is our album of the day. Sneak preview- it is great. So for anyone who is offended, this does not sound anything like anything the Beatles ever did. I listened to this album (the mono version) in the car today with my nephew Max (Brave’s twin brother), who does not like music played loudly. So besides the songs ‘My Generation’ and ‘ The kids are all right’ I don’t remember which song was which and because I couldn’t listen to it very loud (and I had to pay attention to traffic) i wasn’t fully involved. I do remember that there was one very blues-y song and one that reminded me of the Old 97’s.
I really enjoyed digging in early Who with "The Who Sell Out." This one was not nearly as enjoyable. The hits saved this album from being a middling exploration of blues and early rock—in fact, they sound like they came from another era, a glimpse of where the band would be at its best. The rest of the material was sporadically interesting when there were moments that hearkened to brilliant musicianship and how the band would evolve, but I don't think I'll be queuing this up again. And what's with the aerial photo in the industrial chemical factory? It's a 2.something, but "My Generation" and "The Kids Are Alright" are bumping this up to a level 3.
A bit of a mixture this. Some iconic songs and a lot of pretty standard blues numbers. Some fantastic bass and drums and one of the great songs in the history of rock and roll. Curate's egg.
It's a big old rock and roll racket that lots of people like, I don't hate it but it's not in my all time top albums.
Of, course I like the classics, especially "The Kids Are All right" which has been one of my all-time fave Who songs. Overall, the album has lots of energy, kick and seems a bit sloppy, which could explain why critics revised their initial mediocre reviews after punk came along. I guess, that to capitalize on the success of the singles they needed to gather enough material for an LP quickly, so it makes sense to do a few blues and R&B standards, but the James Brown and Bow Didley covers are not up to par with those done by their peers, The Stones, for example.
Quite an audacious debut by these lads. Their heavy sound must have turned heads back in the mud 60s. My Generation is still an iconic song
The more I listen to The Who, the less I like them. I think I prefer them as a singles band rather than their albums, which have a lot of filler.
Ich werde in diesem Leben kein grosser The Who Fan. Solides Album, mehr aber nicht.
Same old same old. But still good.
I've not really purposefully listened to or dived into The Who's music before. It's nice to have a reason to listen! This is their debut album and you can feel that it was kind of rushed and thrown together and not a great representation of their live shows at the time. I really like that they did some covers of James Brown tracks and never knew that before, although not exactly on the level of writing your own stuff, I do appreciate a complete style-change cover. It's very classic rock and roll and reminds me of some of the early Beatles stuff which I love, especially It's Not True. I think I prefer their later work though which has more punch to it.
Not conflicted at all about this one. Tommy was soooo much better. Not sure why this is on the list. Most of the songs are a bit listless.
Two great songs and filler. The trade mark of the 60’s band!
Solid debut rock album from the Who
Enjoyed it much more than their later stuff.
201 million streams for one track, 7 million for another, but then none of the other 10 tracks get to 1 million (as of September 2022). Clearly dominated by the title track. Unfortunately I find Townshend's highly repetitive guitar work very very irritating which limits my ability to appreciate the Who, but then on this album there is not much to appreciate anyway. Some standard 60s pop songs, some highly derrivative blues and nothing more.
Mmyas
Good, but not my fav Who album.
Wow! What an loud album! Especially considering when it was released! There are a couple of doowop i flue ced teenage love songs that hasn't quite stood the test of time but the title track and the kids are alright makes up for that and then some.
Ahhh t'was grand sure. Nothing really grabbed me outside of the songs I already knew. 2.5/5
Good
Yeah nah.
Nah.
It was alright. Some weird random R&B cuts kinda threw me off but kept it interesting at the same time. 5/10
I’m A Mqn!!
Pretty decent album . I liked lies lies lies, the kids are alright and the end one the ox
ref ein kommentar eg hadde om at eg alltid blanda the doors og the who og ikkje var sikker på kven eg likte best: the doors er bedre og dei er ikkje spesielt like 3
Shout and Shimmy (disc 4 of the 50th anniversary super deluxe album) was one of those songs that I felt like I have heard before in various movies/shows/ads/media-in-general, but I never knew what the name of the song was, or who it was by. This is the one song that has stood out to me so far. The other songs have all been just fine, but nothing else grabs my attention. Good rhythmic songs to put on in the background (while testing, or at a social if I'm not really listening to the lyrics), but wouldn't find myself coming back to listen regularly
Good single, album not a standout.
First few songs were pretty boppy and definitely pop-rock. All of a sudden it then switches to the harder angst-filled tune of "My Generation", which was quite new for the time, and then straight back to that pop-rock sound. The latter part of the album turned a little more bluesy and southern american rock. I would liken this album to starting off as Beatles-esque then with an inflection of what could be argued as early punk rock, and ending in the vein of the early works of the Rolling Stones. Best: My Generation Worst: I Don't Mind
A lot less heavy than I was expecting. Slower and more chilled out too. Not my fave but not bad.
The most punk of the British Invasion bands (except for maybe The Kinks) though you can't really hear it on this album of mostly R&B inspired songs. Not the strongest collection of tunes.
Alright.
it's probably difficult to understand the impact and value of this album at its moment in history. it kinda sounded like what I expected and a quarter of the album are covers. I guess credit is due for the tracks with a more punchy sound that laid the foundation of future genres. I respect and recognize the historical significance. favorite track was an instrumental: the ox.
Bien. Un poco largo. 3
Powerpop met twee memorabele nummers.
Basic rock album. Good for its time. Bit too long
Certainly found this more entertaining than their (or should I say, Townsend's) later concept albums. A fun listen but not worth adding.
Underwhelming except for my Generation
Ah...,The Who. I whinge about the Who. My argument is that the Kinks were better. Townshend isn't a great guitarist. Daltrey always seems to sing on the edge. They seem to have created a mythology. Oh well. Surprise me..Plaaaayyy. Yeah...great drumming from Moon. Most songs are short. Meh. 2.75
The kids are alright. So is this album. I love The Who, and as great as they were, they just weren't the Stones or the Beatles. No one disputes this. Well, I know ONE person who disputes this, and truly believed The Who were the greatest rock band ever: My English 252 teacher from my second semester of college. Shout out to Jim McWilliams, a heavy set fella who spoke like Elmer Fudd, and not by design. I can't imagine he's still alive. He really was portly and seemed quite proud of that fact to the point he was unwilling to change. Sort of like his stance on The Who. If Professor McWilliams is still with us, I have to think he's still busy justifying how and why Pete Townshend got himself caught in a child-porn scandal. I'm sure no one claimed the kids were alright back then.
Innocent brit pop. Nice selection from the timeframe
A few great songs on this, my generation and the kids are alright, the ox, the rest of the album isn’t anything special compared to other 60’s music. The who did go on to make greater music once they got their own sound.
60s music is so fun
Rock
I see the next on my catchup list is another The Who release. Pretty strong debut but it's not for me. Fave: The Ox

The Who has so many incredible albums ... unfortunately this is not one of them. Unexciting. C
My Generation by The Who (1965) In 1965, The Who were just getting started, producing a revolution in rock. It was loud. It was dirty. It was sassy. This album was hugely influential, even though it had a limited shelf life and thus didn’t age well. I can’t imagine millennials being attracted to this music on first listen. But please try, kids. [Note: This is a review of the original 1965 debut [mono] UK release, although one can have great fun comparing with the 2000 ‘alternative’ mix and the 2014 stereo remix, all of which are available on the 5-CD 79-track 50th Anniversary/Super Deluxe edition (updated 2020)]. Marshall tube amps generate hum, fuzz, and harmonics, and both Pete Townshend (guitar) and John Entwistle (bass) utilize these features to full effect (even though Entwistle’s bass is sadly pushed toward the back of the mono mix). With none of the smooth vocals of the crowd-pleasing Beatles, or the firm grounding in American R&B of The Rolling Stones, or the folk rock prophetic poetry of Bob Dylan, The Who blasted onto the musical scene of the mid 60s with antipathetic destructiveness. It would not have been hard to predict that musical instruments would soon be smashed onstage by these blokes as part of an intentionally theatrical celebration of musical nihilism. The civilized world was shocked but the kids loved it (Full disclosure: I was one of the kids—loving it, but eager to hear what was coming next and quite ready to move on.) Lead vocals by Roger Daltrey were, at this early stage in his career, marred by pitch problems, weak projection, and flat timbre. His cover of two James Brown songs (“I Don’t Mind”, “Please Please Please”) and one Bo Diddley number (“I’m a Man”) are embarrassingly poor vocal stylistic imitations [cultural appropriations], even by the standards of 1965. He was only 21 years old. The Britrock/R&B synthesis was much better executed by the contemporaneous Rolling Stones. But Daltrey’s vocals on other songs, including his innovative, affected, and exaggerated ‘stutter’ effect (“My Generation” [supposedly channeling the effects of amphetamines]) were more skillful and raucously entertaining, adding to the revolutionary sound. And the vocal ensemble sections were well enough arranged, but very rough in the performance and recording (“Much Too Much”, “Please Please Please”, “It’s Not True”). The pop vocal work (“The Kids Are Alright”) was far inferior to what we were hearing from The Beatles at the time. Pete Townshend demonstrates with distortion, tremolo, flashes of noise brilliance (“Out in the Street”), blues riffs & bends (“I Don’t Mind”), droning (“The Good’s Gone”), and pick sliding & feedback (“The Ox”) that hard rock was clearly headed in a new direction. And even on this initial outing, he shows many compositional features like key changes, slamming repetitive chords, and discordant outros, that would be more fully developed as his career progressed. Bass playing by John Entwistle was way ahead of its time (listen to “My Generation” as a bass guitar showcase) and drums by Keith Moon (“The Ox”!) established patterns and fills that would become standard for virtually all subsequent hard rock. Lowlights on this album include the three aforementioned covers of compositions by James Brown and Bo Diddley, the inclusion of which was most likely designed to offend the sensibilities of British cultural highbrows (and just as likely succeeded), but they were very poorly done. Likewise, the more pop-oriented tracks (“La-La-La-Lies”, “Much Too Much”, “The Kids Are Alright”) seemed lame at the time, probably because, in retrospect, they were. But the highlights (“Out in the Streets”, “The Good’s Gone”, and the title track “My Generation”) are of historical significance in the development of the hard rock genre, as well as its metal, grunge, and thrash offspring. And the closing track “The Ox” is a dazzling display of hard rock experimentation. At the very least, every lover of music ought to hear this one brief track. This is not the kind of album to listen to over and over, but one serious listen during one’s fleeting span of life is essential. 3/5
Their first album as The Who and the music is more mod-pop, before they started sounding a little edgier. I prefer their later albums towards the end of the 60s and onwards, but this still has some good tracks
very reminiscent of "hard days night" for like half the album rough early white people rock the other half 3.5
Very of it’s time, more Beatles than the bombastic rock I normally think of
While My Generation is still the best song on here, the others aren't too bad either. They don't sound too original but they're pretty fun.
A great album.
Of course - the album with My Generation and The Kids are Alright is supposed to be a classic but not the band at their best as an album it’s not so special. Still a good pumping The Who album though.
A decent rock LP that shines when it sticks to the janglier guitar tones and livelier, catchy arrangements. Does lose itself in the middle with an ill-advised try at Delta Blues + some other genres that don't suit the band well, but the sheer number of tracks manage to produce enough winners to make for an overall pleasant listen.
A classic album. If you like hard rock, you will enjoy this amazing record.
None of the songs really live up to My Generation
Alright
p83, 1965. 3.5 stars. The sound of an above average 60s beat combo :) It's a 50/50 split of filler and genuine classics. Interesting to listen to from a historical perspective - you can hear the genesis of The Who's later sound, and Pete Townshend's song writing is at least on par with anything Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards or Ray Davies did at the same time, but not sure it needs repeated listens.
I like The Who, but nothing really stands out to me in this album
A solid but not amazing debut by The Who. You can hear a bit of the direction they would go in, but this pales in comparison to what the band would become.
Their later stuff is so much more inventive and exciting that it's tough to objectively listen to this album for me. It's fun though and showcases their strong songwriting fundamentals that would continue on their career.
A good intro to early Who..... but I much preferred their later releases
The Who in embryonic form. Their sound not yet fully formed (I had to check Roger Daltrey was the singer on this album), but plenty of their characteristic oomph. 3/5
Some stand out tracks on here, obviously the title track is the best on here but a very good collection of songs nonetheless. 3.5/5
My favorite songs from the album are the James Brown covers!
Don't know if I made this joke before but these kids were alright ;) Anyway, I enjoyed half of this a lot. My generation and The Kids Are Alright were the highlights. The drumming and bass is flawless, drives the instrumental closer home. Respect for The Who and the album is good but you can tell they still had developing to do.
Interesting mix of covers (James Brown, blues), pop and their own developing voice
3/5
A bit all over the place sound wise but otherwise an excellent album with heavy influence in the genre
Bra skit. inget banbrytande dock
2022.01.03
An okay album, besides My Generation it was unfortunately nothing to write home about.
I never really get into the who
I am a moderate fan, know the hits, even saw them in concert, though admittedly not in their prime. Embarrassingly I had not ever sat down and listened through the debut album. I'm happy that this is the first Who I've been served up. The album is a bit uneven. I don't love the covers. Though they are fun from a historical perspective, I don't think they'd be all that enjoyable out of context. Of course the song My Generation is a standout, never gets old for me, and like no song before or since. The Kids Are Alright is a classic which I think holds up pretty well, and looking at the album cover, man, they were just kids. I don't think I've heard It's Not True before, it reminds me of I'm a Boy, in a good way. La-La-La-Lies is another nice discovery, I've asked Spotify to go ahead and play it for me again sometime. In fact I'm sure the whole album will grow on me with additional listens. All of that said, does this album make it obvious these guys will mature into one of the all time great rock bands? I think that's a tough sell. With the exception of My Generation, the (original) songs are pretty good but not actually great. There's certainly enough here that I would have gone out to see them if they were at my local venue and would have checked out the next album. I want to give it 3.5 stars.
Better than expected. 3/5. I prefer the later Who albums, but this one is pretty good too.
dated
Just different enough from other albums of that time period to stand out a little. Not my fav band from that era but I get why they were contenders. 3.5.
Mediocre album at best. Outstanding tracks: "The Kids are Alright", "La La La Lies". "Much Too Much" shows what the future held; promising.
Favoritne: I Don't Mind, My Generation, The Kids Are Alright, A Legal Matter.
I like hearing the early 60s stuff that was so unlike the music the bands would be remembered for. Like Floyd, Beatles, etc. It's like seeing a 50s Vett. It's so representative of the era but not of the car. And yet it's still super cool.
This is fun, but the other one is way better cover to cover. Glad I listened but I won’t return to more than a couple tracks.
Meh album with some good songs. A lot of songs on album and they start to sound the same by the end
Of course familiar with the title song. But surprised at the other songs. Not bad.
Average, title song is the best one.
Seems like they pretty much stole sounds from black artists before them
Better than greatest hits, some hidden gems
Never been a big Who fan. Some songs stick out, while others sound like generic rock n' roll tunes that could've been any faceless band. Meh. Favorite tracks: "Out in the Street", "I Don't Mind", "My Generation"
album is alright, is a bit tame for modern standards, very much a 60s rock vibe obviously my generation, the song is the exception
Another album from the Who that I wasn't familiar with. It is interesting to hear a different sound from the band. The sound of early rock and roll comes through on a few songs, mixed in with some of what I'm more familiar with on songs like "My Generation" and "The Kids Are Alright". I didn't find any tracks that I would want to skip, but with my first listen I didn't come away with a feeling like I would be revisiting this album any time soon. "The Ox" might deserve a second listen. The album was good enough for 3.5 stars but not enough to round up to 4.
Good band The Who. The best song is "My generation".
I wasn’t really feeling the first few tracks, but the latter half I definitely enjoyed. Favorite tracks: My Generation, Anytime You Want Me, Circles.
It's a legal matter baby. I want to keep doing the dirty things I do. Someone should check his search history. Oh. Best offer from th'oo yet.
Me gustaron "Out in the street", "La-La-La-Ladies" y por supuesto "My generation".
Not that great
I love the Who a lot, but I save my hype for the later classics: Who's Next, Tommy, Quadrophenia
Eh... like early Beatles so its alright but not like... amazing. My Generation === fantastic though. Saves it from a 2 3
Alternate history noise pop for British boys. Hearing this makes me think I was over-generous with Tommy, though they are quite different pieces of music. It's an entertaining but shallow piece of garage. Thanks to it, I'm of the mind that the genre is best left to Americans. But - credit where credit is due - this is a formative album in the sound. That alone doesn't make it exemplary. I did start to pick up on winning tracks later in the tracklist: It's Not True.
Kind of all over the map, isn’t it? I wasn’t expecting those drastic shifts from something like “I Don’t Mind” to “My Generation.” Lots of stuff I liked, but pretty clear they were still trying to find their identity by throwing everything at the wall to see what would stick.
Quintessentially 60s and British
This is better than anything I’ve heard by The Who. But I don’t think I’ve ever listened to one of their records all the way through. I’m really not interested in the bloated-yet-uninspired theatrics of their more “seminal” works. I guess I’m not a pinball wizard who wants to see windmill guitar strumming. This is just good 60s rock. And always seems to be glossed over in documentaries about The Who. Too bad. Plus, I like Townsend’s Ric tone WAY more than the later Les Paul/Marshall arena rock sound. Cool record. Will listen again! Highlights: I Don’t Mind; The Good’s Gone; My Generation; The Ox
I don't mind the who, calling me a fan is a stretch. This album was only found on YouTube music in mono. So that didn't help. But there were a couple songs I thought were good.
bri'ish ol' banger (ei oikeesti bängeri)
1 song album, iha ok mut ei kamala < 3,6
Got a song out of it so that’s a plus. Can't say I find it compelling tho. Listenable.
The idea of this being controversial is interesting. Sounds like rock from 1965 alright
not bad, but I sorta expected more out of the Who
a bit repetitive in the prominent use of drums, but some catchy songs
This album was fine. Best track is The Kids Are Alright. Don’t know if The Who is for me.
A unique album from the Who, where they are still new enough and don't have the cache to go too far from the mainstream sound on every track. There are more harmonizing than one would expect, but it shows where the group would eventually explore.
Nota 5,5/10
The kids were alright
L’assolo di basso di “My Generation” vale tutto.
.
Not bad but not great either.
The rambunctious bluesy rock of yore. The music of youthful road trips, house parties, and substance use. Fun stuff, but it feels a bit like a movie flashback montage.
Didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would
Defo an album of the time. Feels quite dated, but you can hear the influence it had on other bands in the same era and now.
One of those albums that is of its time. Got a lot of respect for that, but for me just sounds dated. Score largely on legacy/influence. 7/10
Some crackers
Was looking forward to listening but it didn't really get me interested as much as I thought it would. The Who are a band who definitely found themselves a bit later in their career it seems.
Not really listened to the Who before, and at times didn’t think it sounds like them at all. Some decent singalongs, especially their cover b-side cover
Liked Generations & Kids are Alright. I never noticed how much The Who is a jazz driven band. I even heard Elton John style piano. So Who are they really? I don’t know but they are talented. Very cool cover looking into their world.
dbebebdfehebd
Brexity prick and a nonce but fairly decent tunes
02/10 - Yesterday I worked on header details at the Drum Storage Building, developing a CAD file of the Office/Lab build out for OfficeScapes, and helping Vidula with family development. I didnt give this album much attention but running it through a few times it was much more similar to the Beatles then I expected it to be. I had never really listened to The Who before and would like to investigate them a little more and hopefully re-listen to this album sometime again.
A pretty decent rock album. As ever with The Who I like the music but dislike Roger Daltrey's singing
Whatever. I've been told this is the final Who album on this list and I am grateful. I love the Who but I also don't need to hear four of their albums in the span of a few months, especially when they sound so similar. At least I can now say my favorite Who album is Who's Next. My Generation is a classic on here but I wasn't a fan of any of the others. They were not necessarily bad, but they are just the same stuff I have heard before over their 100+ other songs. I also don't understand why all their albums are a million songs long. Shout out to Stevie for giving me the scoop it was only 12 songs but even that felt like too many. Again, just happy this is over.
Bien. Un poco largo.
Not a big Who fan but decent
Helt ok forhold til the who. Mangler dessverre anthemet Babba O'Riley :(
Finde the who hatte bessere alben. 3
