Reviews (page 12 of 12)
You can tell it was the Genesis and inspiration for a lot of other albums and bands. Otherwise wasn't my favorite and I think it suffers from the Seinfeld effect greatly
Eh
About as exciting as you'd expect for 1965. Honestly a snooze fest most of the time, the mixing and overall production on their first album is appalling. Puts you to sleep with the repetitive nature which is saying something as AC/DC are my favorite band. Songs are not even very long (roughly 2:40 on average) yet many of them seem to drag on. Can't be too critical though as it is their first album and band's first albums (at least up until the 90s or so) would always come out kind of meh. Bands just trying to put their name out not really having figured out their style yet. Check any of their later albums and you can see the difference in popularity
The debut. No overplayed CSI songs leading off. At least I don’t think. Was “Out in the Street” the opener for CSI: Des Moines? I mean this thing is ok. I like the loose garage rock, drums and echoed jangle guitars, but overall this puppy starts out fine. I accidentally had D.R.I in my queue. That was a change of pace. Not what I expected from the Who. I suppose the UK was obsessed with American soul and blues. This type of smoky bar, rich guy blues is not for me. This is cooler. Lyrics are mid. Man I expected to like this way more. It just sort of drones on. It sounds like a lame indie band from 2003 despite being almost 40 years old at that time. I suppose that’s ahead of its time isn’t it. Nahhh what is this? It’s so bubblegum. We’re going to prove you wrong!! Male cheerleader in an anime type of song. Is that a trope? I’ve seen almost zero anime. Anyway. Maybe I’ll start, so I can turn this song off. How did this get a record deal?? This is at least a little punk in some of the vocals but Jesus Christ. This is so sappy. I guess that’s what sells. And listen, I don’t sit here on first listen and decipher poetry, but these lyrics are bunk. Just predictable and bordering on satirical. And then my generation. This song rules. I don’t care that it’s over played. How does this fit in with the saccharine doo wop songs from the rest of this. I assume we’ll settle right into some more Perry Como/Pat Boone style bangers after this rad bass solo. Yeah we’re back. Hey at least the guys hitting on my girlfriend are my pals. I feel like this is also a big song for them. The madman on drums feels restrained for most of this. Nice fill section just to prove me wrong. This song is ok in places. I think I hate piano in blues. That’s what it is. It reminds me of white blues. This one is ok, but it’s so dated. Even for the time. What is that vocal line. Had to laugh. Yeah this one is meh. The Beatles? Oh no, it’s a hootenanny. Actually this one rules. The Beatles comparison is a good thing. The lyrics still have moments of weird over explanation that is just bizarre, but the tune is fun and the concept is better. The vocals sound rebellious, the guitar is cool. Buddy isn’t a dad murderer NOR is he part Chinese. Come on guys. Leave him alone. Blues cover//interpolation? Mannish boy performed at a junior high talent show. I kid. It’s not that bad. It’s also not that great. It’s middling. It’s a legal matter. I mean it’s a song about getting married. I’m surprised how decent it is. I think it’s more “modern”. Although, I could lose most if not all of the piano from this fuckin thing. Good god. Still, it was buried enough. Good song. Just a bunch of stuff goin on. Cool. Pass the “Ox”. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahaahahhaahahahahhahaaha. This is pretty cool. A bewildering album. I had (as always) lots of expectations on how this thing would sound and this sounded like none of them. A few good songs and a few songs that sound like they were written by teenagers (they were). A side note: “I Can’t Explain” is a single from the same time that is so good. Why isn’t that one on the album?? Anyway. This is middle of the road/slightly annoying album. Here’s my non-traditional .5 rating that gets rounded down. 2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: My Generation, It’s not True, A Legal Matter, The Ox.
This album was boring. I will probably get lectured by someone saying this album was important for its time. No one was doing this and that and blah blah blah. But I don't care. The songs were under averat best. I'm glad that I know the Who has some good record under their belt. This one just ain't it. Not for me. No sir. Some kind of cool guitar parts. Drumming isn't as good as Keith Moon's other stuff. Singing was bland.
I like the Who, but they were definitely still finding their way on their earliest albums. Best bit here is the title track, especially it's legendary ffff...ade away lyric, which is definitely a moment. In my opinion, they found their sound around 1967. By the early 70s Roger Daltry had developed one of the best rock voices out there, they'd embraced a bit of theatre, and they were great. But even with this hindsight, I didn't really rate this, it seemed to merge in with much 60s stuff and I can't think of much to say about it.
muy largo el album la verdad y a excepción de algunos temas no muy mi estilo
Budget brand Zeppelin. 2/5
I like The Who but this album didn't need to be over an hour long.
TBH, this album is full of fairly forgettable songs. I understand why the title track is the only one that gets any airplay, but I don't understand why this album ended up on this list... Although I do like how they use the refrain from that track as a leitmotif. "Much Too Much" sounds a lot like a worse version of "I Can See For Miles" from The Who Sell Out. I could have done without the "Mannish Boy" cover.
now i need to listen to the patti smith version of "my generation" 50 times in a row to cleanse my mind and heal my soul after enduring this slop. save me patti smith and john cale fav tracks: it's not true, the ox, a legal matter
Ughhhh i don’t wanna listen to this I don’t care about these guys at all. I listened to half of it but it’s not my fault their albums are so long
Wasn't my generation but i could see how people of said generation would enjoy. They way they did hoola hoops and what not
Eh
7/24 songs added to playlist Best song: La-La-La Lies
As with many bands, the single or most popular song on their first album is always the best while the other tracks in one ear and out the other. Though with hindsight, it is clear that The Who would be able to make entire albums worth of good songs, or projects I might be willing to go back to.
It’s a meh from me…already finding myself going, The Who was that I was listening to earlier today? Also it should be The Whom
Not really my speed. I actually enjoyed that one instrumental track!
Not very lyrically good.
Eh. One good song, but surprisingly not into the rest. Weird mix of sounds. Not for me.
My Generation is great but I definitely prefer their later stadium rock music. Not everyone's cup of tea but it is certainly distinctive. Much of this album simply fades away.
Honestly pretty underwhelming. The album just sounds a bit too dated to hold up and it's clear this album is from 1965. Obviously My Generation is a hit but that's about the only noteworthy thing on the album. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
If you told me this was a Kinks album I would believe you. Pop/R&B Who is not as good as Rock Who. I thought I liked the Who more than this but this is middling. This feels like the album someone told The Who they had to make and once it was a success they were able to explore their own sound.
..
It was okay. Don't know if I'd listen to it again.
Accidentally listened to this twice
I have never liked the Who. This album did nothing to change that.
If this was 1001 tracks My Generation would be a 5 (as would The Kids Are Alright). The album mostly sounds like young men trying on too many jackets that don't fit.
Snooze fest
Honestly - 2 Stars just for the title track. The rest of the debut is pretty disjointed. This is the Who looking for a sound and recording tracks that the Kinks or the Stones would do better.
Rating: 5/10 Sounds pretty good, but is a huge rip-off of the Beatles. I am not a fan of this band but at least for other albums it seems like they have their own sound.
Do you know how whiny an album has to be to get an elder emo like me to go “what a sad sack bored this album was” Couple bright spots tho
I saw a summary/review of this album that called it something like "the hardest mod pop" anyone had done yet at the time, which made me smile a bit because I feel like I've met a few older men who consider The Who to be, like, the peak of what rock has to offer and I think they'd dislike hearing it called mod pop. I didn't actively dislike this but I didn't particularly like it either, and for some reason I was reminded that the Duff sisters, Hilary and Hailey I believe, covered "My Generation" but because it was a Disney venture they said "hope I don't die before I get old" which caused a mild kerfuffle with probably the same older gentlemen. I have no idea how I came to know this information, if it's even true. They don't really detail a lot of what people are saying about their generation, though, do they? Just that they're talking because this generation likes to hang around? They would have hated Twitter (I mean so do I but)
Couple of tunes. But they were run of the mill 60s otherwise. But all over the shop
I feel like this is where The Who most sounds like the Beatles in a good album but not a great album
Who? Just listen to the Beatles
My generation is a trickle song. The rest are ok in a 60s way
ну хз
My Generation, while showing signs of promise, comes off as a bit twee. Released in 1965, it serves as the band's debut, introducing them to the world with a blend of R&B, rock, and mod influences. Tracks like My Generation and The Kids Are Alright showcase the band's rebellious spirit and youthful energy. However, the album as a whole lacks the sonic depth and maturity that would later define The Who's sound. Despite its shortcomings, the album remains an important artifact of the British Invasion era, capturing a snapshot of The Who in their formative years. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 4 STAND OUT TRACK - My Generation
Not a fan of The Who overall and nothing here to change my mind. Middling 2 overall I think.
Not a huge fan of the opener, but album bounces back with "I Don't Mind." It's okay. I think I'm coming to find that I don't like 60's rock, ha.
Yeah, kinda memorable, but it is not in my window of appreciation. Driving, cleaning house and maybe hucking our rubbish background music.
I like the who but this is before they started doing much interesting. I can appreciate it for its historical importance but that's it.
Expected some good songs. Got very little.
Not a huge fan of the who, it was just kinda boring
I'm a big "The Who" fan but this felt pretty uninspired. Except for "My Generation" none of the hits was on here. It feels like they are still trying to find their sound and doing some lackluster covers. "My Generation" is a great song though.
пиздец одно и то же в каждой песне
Ei oikein sitä mun tyyppistä Whota. Aika Rolling Stones, Beatles ja blues tyyppistä. Parhaat" My Generation, The Kids Are Alright
Solid opener from the who..... They will go far. Point deducted for Peter Townsends search History.
Day65 - my generation is a classic song but the rest of the album is a lot of soul and blues covers. i want to give it more stars but i didn’t grow up listening to the who so they aren’t as important to me as the beatles or the stones
Cosplay of the blues. Generic and tacky with little soul. Not a fan.
A common talking point about music is the opinion that a band's older music is better and fans wish they would go back to that style and make music like that again. Apparently, that must not be true of The Who; this is just forgettable outside of the title track.
I like some songs from The Who, but they're certainly not on this album. Even their megahit "My Generation" is an annoying song.
It's grand
I don't mind The Who but prefer their slightly later stuff, this was pretty good in parts though
Meh
Mid. Decent for what it was
Don't feel like it's aged well.
Solid British blues, but to brash and lacking soul. Very repetitive also, not a classic to my ears.
I thought this album wasn’t that special. I can sort of see how it might have been revolutionary for its time. Not sure how something like this would be above the grounds that Hendrix or the Beatles were breaking at the time. 1.9
Didn't love it
Classic Rock jam band
I just. I didn’t like it. I was bored for most of it. I get the influence. It is an important album but I felt like it was just some “screw you dad” music of the people with mop top haircuts.
Too trebly and tinny. Loud for the era but not my favorite.
i respect the 60s period nostalgia some people will have experienced for this the likes of which we will never know of again as everything spontaneous and organic and beautiful in this world dies but its still largely crap
Not a fan
This is the most boomer album I've ever listened to. It's musically fine. It's just written and performed for people who existed 60 years who didn't die before they got old. They're all old now. And they own everything.
they can a two and a half minute song feel like a ten minute song. pretty mixed bag. The songs that are good, pretty great. the rest is rather meh to boring. 2.5
The drumming is full on. The song My Generation is a classic. This album is an interesting one to listen to. The songs are well-crafted and make you listen. Quite a lot of very heavy blues numbers. Informative as an insight to early Who. Not quite my personal cup of tea but worth a listen or two.
Too boring
Kan nooit hun beste album zijn, dit.
Eh. Not a who guy. Also there's a song on here where buddy talks about how he didn't kill his dad? uhhhhhhhhh
I recognize the title track but not much else.
It was fine.
Early The Who that feels more 50s pop and less 60s counterculture warhorse that they evolved into.
The virgin The Who vs. Chad the Beatles. Who har lavet nogle bangers men der er meget få på det her album
Didn't really listen through all the way
Classic rock and roll. Nothing stands out much as everything is so fundamental to what we expect from the genre. Not my cup of tea but foundational rock roll album
I just don't like The Who.
Not my favorite who's album. A couple of tracks are good, but I like the way the band evolved after this album better
Favorite track[s]: Please, Please, Please
I liked: Please Please Please The Ox
This hard rock the way mashed potatoes are a hard rock. I much prefer there later stuff. This album is bland
Yeah, it’s got ‘My Generation’ on it and that’s the highlight. Listening in 2023, the rest of the album sounds like a pretty formulaic list of R&B standards - but you can imagine the impact of hearing this as a Boomer teen in 1965. The lyrics to ‘I’m A Man’ & ‘A Legal Matter’ haven’t aged well either! There are better Who albums to come…
Sure I guess
This one is a bit jarring for me, it's not at all what I would have expected from The Who on their debut album. It's like they really don't know who they are, they just want to be famous so they've imitated a bunch of popular artists from the time; Beatles, Beach Boys, The Zombies, etc and called it their own. It's a bit too squeaky clean, preppy. Feels disingenuous and duplicitous somehow. My Generation is the one little nugget of burgeoning independent rock 'n' roll / punk gold in the dirty riverbed of pop+blues+rock fusion they're elbow deep panning. It's passable to listen to, but there's no cohesion. This does not give to the listener The Who in their best possible iteration, not by a long shot.
Not enough bangers
I could have died not hearing this one. But there were a couple song that I liked.
Varje låt är samma
Not a big fan of 60s rock. 2.5/5
I feel like my position on the Who hardens every day. I just don't think they're very good. The big songs (Generation and TKAA) are stand outs, but otherwise, it's extremely MOR. Apparently they were bad boys. Not for me, Clive.
2/5. The Who stuck in the Beatles Era. Only 1-2 good rock songs, My Generation and I’m a Man. Other than that, get ready to shimmy and dance your way through. Not the Who I like.
Boring, The Monkees are bettee
Too long
i'm learning about my personal musical tastes through this project. the early version of the who was not good, and i didn't enjoy it. some songs sounded like not-as-good beatles knockoffs, which makes sense considering its release in 1965. there was more of an original, garage sound on the first side. "my generation" is, clearly, the gem on the album. it slaps! i did find this an interesting listen; as the who's debut, my generation shows the origins of the band and their evolution towards rock music. outside of "my generation," there are few clues to show that the who would become the legendary rock band they are to this day.
Only familiar with the most famous and eponymous track on the album, the rest is an interesting mix of Blues and I guess an emerging rock sound, which must have been pioneering in 1965. Best tracks - My Generation, It's Not True and The Ox - a beast of an instrumental! Ok, not special a high 2
Generic, kinda reminds me of the doors
Deluxe edition has so many songs, and I don't know which ones are actually on the original, so this is pretty hard to rate
Gets a star for My Generation Gets a star for being anachronistic and inspiring grunge and hard rock. It sure as hell doesn’t sound like 1965. I’m sorry though; I can’t manage more than that. It just never stuck with me.
The Who just can’t compete in the 60’s bop sound. They didn’t get good until the 70’s
Was every British band of the 60's required to do a Beatles album before they were allowed to have a style. And this IS NOT psychedelic!!!! in any way. Why do these albums have that genre indication?
Never been a big fan of the Who. I get the cultural significance, but meh. Baba orielly is incredible.
Sounds to me like on The Who's debut album was an attempt to emulate the Beatles. I'm glad they found their own sound later.
5/10
It was fine. Don’t think I’d ever listen again
loud and bad quality. they're too happy. same problem i have with the beatles instant party
60’s pop music. The Who is better in the 70’s.
More nice safe classic rock that wouldn't feel out of place on a denture commercial. Rock and Roll! As featured on Young Sheldon. This ain't your dad's rock and roll. Because it's your grandad's.
Although I'm not going to become a Who fan after listening to one album, this was actually not nearly as bad as I had thought it would be. Dated and samey in places, but I guess it was ground-breaking at the time.

I find the who to be supremely boring and I never want to listen to them
I've always like the Who, but this album did not really resonate with me at the time I listened to it.
Primitivt. Väldigt tidigt rocksound. Alla låtar handlar om tjejer. Ganska bra det var helt klart ett talangfullt band
other than 2 songs i never would have known i was listening to the who
I mean, I do not think this album is bad, but I did get bored and give up half-way through. I’ll have to give it another listen some other time.
Bland
Lotta filler on this one.
nope
Not a big fan of these overly long albums.
Not an amazing album but 2 great singles.
A true has-been album probably inserted into the list, once again, with the British bias of the survey. The history of Townsend is troubling too. I can't in good conscience give this one any better than a 2 star rating. Musically, it did very little for me then or now and has never been a group that I found very inspiring.
2.75
Just sounded like almost other old rock, nothing bad just okay
Heel divers, maar beklijft niet overal. Vind de latere periode dan toch interessanter.
Shocked I didn't like it more. Came up short for me.
Now, I've listened to the who before and remember them being ok... Ok wow. This was so bland it was infuriating. Maybe it's because I'm at work, but I listen to most of these albums at work. The entire time I was just waiting for it to end. It was like they wanted to be the Beatles... But weren't good at it. I mean honestly, I liked the Ian dury album more because it at least had a few memorable hilarious songs, these were all so bland it blew my mind. It's not bad music per say, but easily the most forgettable album yet. 1.5 may be harsh, but that might be the rating for me, unsure.
give me half stars damnit - 2.5. nothing special, liked a handful of songs but 60% had me snooozing
Aptly named “The Who”, because when people hear their music, they consistently ask, “Who tf Likes this shit?!”. Leave the owl noises to the birds, mates, and I’m not talkin about the fit ones you try to grind on in the clubs. Cheerio and g’day to this absolutely boring album.
Not a big fan of most old rock music.
Very diverse genres which I didn't expect but I can't say I'm a massive fan so a harsh 2*
Anche questo me l'aspettavo più rivoluzionario e interessante. Non male la title song
it was just bland - lots of unimpressive tracks but a few made up for them ig. you can see the potential but they’re definitely not there yet
The Who- Best tune is My Generation I love the raw energy. Totally unique to have a bass solo and a drum solo on a hit song- pretty badass. Kids are alright is good too. Weird that it sounds like he does a voice in the James Brown tune (an impression?) and another one on I’m a Man -and the stuttering on my generation. Feel like he’s a doesn’t really a have a unique voice as a singer (idk maybe I haven’t listened to enough Who but I don’t know if I’d be able to recognize his voice). Super harsh sounding album. I usually like a little distortion and some trashy drums but this is maybe a bit too much. Maybe a bold choice maybe just bad recording but it kinda sounds like an iPhone recording from behind a drum set at a rehearsal. It’s a vibe iKeith Moon’s drums is the most interesting thing going on. I like that busy style with all the fills but after a while I wanted to hear a bit more attention to groove/ feel or some hipper ideas. Pete Townsend is not that special as a lead player- sounds like pretty generic blues stuff. I guess this has some proto punk style but does that just mean they play loud and kind of sloppy? This album definitely feels rushed. Three covers and the Ox is pretty much just wipeout with feedback and detuned guitar. Doing this list I am realizing a lot of these English rock bands of the 60’s or classic rock bands in general are overrated. It sounds like another example of “it must have been an exciting sound / aesthetic at the time” but doesn’t hold up as that interesting to me compared to better rock music to come after it or stuff of the same era recorded with better session musicians. I think I’d prefer to listen to Elvis or The Beach Boys or Beatles. 2.5
This is totally forgettable.
The classics on this are great but the first few songs kept making me think “who are you?”
Enjoyed some songs, but felt overall the album didn’t know what it was doing stylistically. Could be pleasant background music until you start paying attention to the lyrics and realize these people suck.
So for three days in a row I've had three direct, powerful albums of pure rock I have loved (AC/DC, Little Richard and Slayer). This feels like a logical fourth but... With the exception of the title track, it mistakes loud for any sort of drive and is... A bit dull? And that's before you hear Daltrey take a steaming poo on a James Brown song (his first step towards becoming the embarrassing elderly bigot he is today?) EDIT - He does it to Muddy Waters too, two tracks later. Yuck. I can see why they are a favourite of people who have period accurate haircuts instead of personalities. With the exception of My Generation, this is magnolia walls dialled up to eleven...
I never could get into The Who, especiallly on this (their first) album, which sounds a lot like typical 60s beat/rock fare. The title song is alrightish, though. 2/5
todos los temas me parecieron IGUALES, no se no es para mí perdón
I'll say I was a bit engaged by the drums, but this isn't my favorite Who era and in my opinion doesn't age too well. I'll pass on these.
The Who are dull.
This is quite boring. Obviously know the title track, but thought given their reputation the album might offer a bit more than it does. There's a good patch (My Generation / The Kids Are Alright / Please Please Please) but nothing more than that. Not far off a 3 on the strength of that burst, but it's just a bit dull.
Sounds very dated now
Out In The Street - kedves könnyed nyárias dalnak hangzik, nem feltétlen kedvencem 10/7 I Don't Mind - egyáltalán nem nagy durranás kicsit unalmas 10/4 The Good's Gone - im sorry olyan unalmas volt a feléig sem jutottam el de még mindig jobb mint egy average manuel dal 10/2 La-La-La-Lies - magamtól biztos nem hallgatnám de egész okés 10/6 Much Too Much - szerintem én itt fel is adom ezt az albumot Összességében egyáltalán nem az én világom kicsit úgy hangzik mint egy low budget beatles
Classic tracks the kids are alright and my generation. Entwistle is awesome.
Eh, it's ok. Some of it sounds very of-its-time, some of the louder bits were probably quite forward-thinking and some of it still sounds stuck in the 50s. Without the title track I can't see how this would be considered such an important album. Think I've been plenty generous to The Who with my previous ratings so I'll be harsher here - 2.5 stars.
Quite repetitivo, though not bad. I appreciate the style but truly just not my cup of tea
Two or three great singles. Other tracks are lame and forced bluesy.
Meh?
I was never a fan of The Who
Of the numerous British rock bands coming to age during the same era, I always found The Who rather bland and boring. This album is no exception.
Pretty decent, didn’t blow me away by any means. Who’s Next is a far better album I think.
Decent
Mostly just generic rock. I really like Who's Next, but this one didn't quite click with me. The first few songs were completely forgettable. "My Generation" was good, I also enjoyed the instrumental "The Ox". I'm not the biggest fan of Daltrey's vocals. Keith Moon killing it on the drums as usual, but maybe they rely on him a bit too much? I'll give this a 2/5 from an enjoyment factor, but I respect this album a thousand times more than the albums I usually give 2s to.
Ok psychedelic pop/rock. If I heard it in a vacuum I would not have seen anything to suggest how good their later album were.
my generation er eina lagið
nah, was expecting something else could be The Beatles
Oh wow the who sucks
Really goes to show how big a step up Rubber Soul was. Few good songs, but mostly pretty rote early 60s rock.
There are some songs by The Who that I really really love, but this album's just not doing it for me. Though I do have to give some credit to Pete, the guitarist - there are some riffs and whatnot I enjoyed throughout the record. I know that not everyone likes The Beatles, but The Who has always given me a "we have Beatles at home" kind of vibe - at least that's what this album sounds like. Also I would like to point out that the guy on the left in the UK flag jacket looks like Glenn Howerton of Always Sunny fame.
I know people love the who., but I just don't get it. I don't find their music enjoyable at all.
Pete Townsend is either brilliant or bonkers, sometimes both together. Daltrey is the worst singer ever to front a leading rock band. Entwistle and Moon are utterly amazing virtuosos. Together they all did some great work, but some is very poor, there was never any consistency, with the exception of the incomparable Who's Next. One brilliant track on this album, one very good track and the rest is just filler.
50% beatles, 50% rolling stones, 100% dog shit. 2/5.
Interessant, aber schon ein Relikt, dieses härteste Rockalbum aller Zeiten
3 who albums in. Still not getting it
Too much "fluffy feel good" for me. Plus I hate the early tinny production. Highlight tracks: 3, 6, 9, 13 (deluxe)
Of all the great Who albums this is not the best.
Decent mid 60 British rock album. Not as good and progressive as their later albums.
Classic rock sound, but lacked the humour of Sells Out and the songwriting depth of Who’s Next. My Generation does a great job normalizing stuttering though.
Рок музыка это не моё.
I accidentally listened to like a mega duleux version which really dragged on which might be influencing my rating.
Is it just me or does The Who get by mostly on it's energy? Or maybe theatricality? I mean, they're entertaining as hell and there are some real good songs here. But when they start going after James Brown and Diddley, it's like... I don't know. None of that stuff works for me. I'm also pretty sure I got suckered into listening to a deluxe super long edition of this album, which doesn't help.
The who?
2/5 Fav tune: The Kids Are Alright Walmart beatles
Lite slamrigt, blev less mot slutet. En helgfrukost.
Starts off strong, then kinda sputters out. I like the guitar tone and catchy vocal callbacks. Solid album overall for it's time, but probably don't care to listen again.
This was okay, not my favorite output from The Who.
Non content de proposer un album tout ce qu'il y a de plus chiant, The Who se permet en plus de faire durer cet album sur une vingtaine de son. Absolument infernal.
I give it a 5/10 My generation and the kids are alright are the classic songs on the album. I did discover the Ox from listening, which is a boss song. Unfortunately. La la lies, legal matter, and most of the other songs all suck. I wouldn't recommend.
Not overly impressed. Lacks the spark, swagger and song-writing skills of their contemporaries. The Who are the 'Iconic Band' that I never got.
I always thought The Who were supposed to be some kind of hard rock rebels... aside from the title track this sounded like a knock-off early Beatles act. Some of the cover songs were slightly embarassing, too. Best track: My Generation
The best thing about this album is its 36 minute run-time. I like The Who, just don't love this album. There are slight hints if what they will become ("My Generation"), but a lot of bland pseudo-R&B.
Just not the biggest The Who fan.
The two obvious hits are great. Rest is very meh. Nowhere near Tommy, Who's Next, or Quadrophenia. 5/10
Had its moments. Mostly odd white boy blues.
I'm quite unimpressed. La-La-La-Lies is quite good and the titular song is by far the best one but... it's so very generic and I feel like the mastering here is quite subpar. With my new IEMs My Generation sounded quite like a mess, which I wasn't able to hear before.
Now THIS is Boomer music. Overrated band IMO. Tommy was good tho.
I owe this a relisten
12/24 A lot like “With The Beatles”, but worse. Some jazzy, R&B-ish tunes on the second half, meh. Standout Tracks: The Good’s Gone, La-La-La-Lies, A Legal Matter
Imagine doing this at the same time as the Beatles and Beach Boys, just embarrassing
this type of rock not for me
Not for me
yeah i dont have the energy to listen to this rn...
The title track is good but the rest are awful
someone on here wrote "these guys just reheated the beatles’s nachos and thought they did smt".
This is not my favorite version of the The Who (Quadrophenia is my favorite version). A couple of good songs and then, at least in the version I listened to on Apple Music, a whole bunch of covers of good originals that The Who made actively worse with their attempt -- If I could give this a 1.5 I would.
Wikipedia led me to believe I would enjoy this - I was misled.
Not surprised Keith Moon had a problem with drink, I would’ve as well if I were made to listen to Roger Daltrey every night. Best song on the record is The Ox, because Roger Daltrey isn’t on it. -TomB
Some Beatles esque harmony. But patchy
Awful band angry after listening to this
This album actively made me like the one good song from it less.
shi so bad i couldn't make it past the first 4 songs if british food had a sound it would be this (below mid)
I’m sure this hit hard at the time but does nothing for me now and felt endless. Not sure why Kinks same era same sound don’t evoke the same reaction
Nice
Getting European white man with loud guitar fatigue
Wait there's more than one track on this album?
"my generation" sticks out like a sore thumb here, amidst a ton of faux beatles tinkling and generic rock noise
59. forgettable
sure needed to hear this one
man fuck this sloppy sounding hippie dippy bullshit. I listened to like two of these classic who songs growing up, and the nostalgia was kinda nice but the rest of it is sloppy garbage.
not a fan tbh it all just seemed repetitive
I haven’t listened yet but I will
mä en jaksa näitä äijiä enää omg 60luku menkää jo pois. en tykkäää soriiiii
* mono only - not good
Far too degenerate for my taste. Best song turns out to be a James Brown cover so I am deducting a point
I apologize if anyone here likes The Who, but I have nothing nice to say. The Who is so uncool; they're one of my "die the sweet death of the passage of time" bands
I still find The Who pretty grating. More energy on The Ox instrumental than the rest of the album combined. Found most of this pretty generic 60s stuff. A Legal Matter is nails on a chalkboard bad
No
i'm so disappointed because i love the title track but the rest of this was all blues like bro what i just want to REBEL against my parents and old people
umm is this beatles adjacent?
not a fan
1. Street - 1 2. Mind - 1.5 3. Gone - 1 4. Lies - 1 5. Much - 1 6. Generation - 1.5 7. Kids - 1 8. Please. - 1.5 9. True - 1 10. Man - 1.5 11. Legal - 1 12. Ox -1.5
Jaren 60 rock op zijn top. Lieve liedjes en rock songs.
Really surprised that this is now my second The Who album I've listened to during this 1001 project so far, and I totally hated it. I don't think The Who are for me besides their few best-known tracks. Felt like I was waiting for it to be over the entire time, unfortunately. There were a few tracks that were extremely, piercingly gritty - to the point I had to turn the treble down in my car - which is really saying something.
I understand their impact, I just happen to think they blow.
Back when sounding like the Beatles was the peak of musical innovation
The who?
No, not even a little bit
Nothing clicked for me on this album. The very last track had some interesting drumming, but that's about it.
Boring
Again, I appreciate but nah. The ones I do like I actually like though so that’s something. Fav tracks: The Kids Are Alright Much Too Much I like but the stutters get annoying tbh: My Generation wtf: I’m a Man
Don't want to listen to this Just boring boomer music
From listening to Who's Next and now My Generation through this site, I've discovered that I like the image of the Who as a classic rock band more than their actual music, which I suppose is true for a lot of the bands from this time period. There are two songs on this album that feature a very noticeable Beatles influence, and I wouldn't be surprised if the remaining tracks wear their influences on their sleeves, either. So, why the one-star? There's something off-putting about this album that I have a hard time explaining. It's by all means listenable, though I felt a great reluctance to sit through this one and didn't want to give it a relisten. The only part that I remembered was the "talking about my generation" bit, and that's like five seconds in a full thirty five minutes of music. It's interesting that psychedelic rock is listed as a genre on this album when I didn't notice any psychedelic influence whatsoever. Maybe it's an error.
This album was not at all what I expected when I saw The Who as I was expecting something closer to the sounds from the Who’s Next album. This felt like I listened to an hour long album of cultural appropriation. Knowing what their later sound is, this was a ROUGH listen. I just could not enjoy the songs as it either felt sounded like someone else’s song (or literally was another song, I’m talking about you Shout and Shiver…). Would not listen to again. Anytime you want me and (maybe) my generation are the only two I kind of enjoyed.
This album sucked. I'm a big fan of a lot of the later Who music, but I'd never really listened to the earlier stuff, and now I realize that I wasn't missing much. My Generation is a solid jam, but it feels like the rest of the songs were just thrown together as filler so they could release an LP. A couple songs were so bad, I was tempted to skip through them, but I forced myself to give them a chance and I'm glad I did - only so I never have to hear them again. I give it one star, and partly just on the knowledge that it would get better for these lads.
Too Beatles lite without a Beatles punch.
The Who are overrated. Skip and go straight to Small Faces
Not for me. 1/5
I think they would have been great live. With headset behind your desk at work :(
I turned it off halfway into the first song. Besides, and perhaps notwithstanding my generation, I didn't feel like listening to this.
boring beatles
It's as good as the first time I heard it. If you're at a party and The Who is on and you see someone really into it, stay away. That person is probably boring too. This album thinks it's better than it actually is. Sadly, it's the best album The Who has to offer.
I didn’t enjoy this album. Even the much touted “my generation” was a bit tired. Also the stuttering was a bit much…
Maybe I would have appreciated this more if I didn't get a string of 70s British rock bands but this one sailed by pretty much unnoticed.
Nope
Not my cup of tea
Guitarist pedo pete is not only a pedo, but those who can separate the art and the artist are in for a massively overrated, unimpressive and boring album. disclaimer: I'm very biased against pedophiles and didn't give this a fair shot.
The songs have that silly "old song" vibe. The drums sound like they're badly in need of a tuning. The intro to "Much Too Much" is hilarious.
Well boys, we were due for a stinker after many wonderful pieces of music. *My Generation* is retroactively plastered as a piece of musical art by critics, noting how the harder sound uncommon at the time would be a precursor to genres like punk and heavy metal. Whenever it was released however it did not do well, which I can totally see why. *My Generation* features many antiquated practices very common for the time it was released, including long, unimpressive instrumental sections of songs that ruin the song’s flow and relying way too heavily on harmonization to cover up bad singing. The hard sound that critics rave about is present in only one song on the entire album, *The Ox*, which is very fitting name considering it does most of the heavy work here. It’s not even a song fitting for the album, it’s an instrumental piece The Who tacked on at the end of recording because it sounded good. Overall, *My Generation* does not bring many new concepts to the table and shows why some common practices for bands of the 60s needed to be shown the door.
fuck the who
Nope. Bit dated
Short Version: That’s not my music!
I went on a nice evening walk, just put in new contacts, admiring the brickwork and leaves, with this album playing in the background. Easiest time for any piece of music to be “special”. This one wasnt. Lamo from the 60s zzz.
I'm thinking that I don't like The Who, as it feels, just like the Rolling Stones, they're trying to appeal to more American-like musical styles all the time, rather than developing their own ideas, and it just gets annoying. I mean, I really can't stand the singing here, with all the repeating and stuttering here, and I only like it when it feels as though it isn't so self-indulgent. Plus, for thirty something minutes, this drags. The final track trying to be some mega-wild instrumental comes off as more self indulgent than something cool, and again, this just annoys me. Actually, this album really annoys me. All the music here is just exactly the type of music I dislike from the mid-60s-era. I mean, Rubber Soul came out this year, and in comparison, this is a real drag, man. I was going to go with a two, but writing this review made me realize how little there is I like here. A couple okay tracks don't make up for songs that actively make me angry.
nothing really stood out 😭 i didn't know the who started in '65. i thought it was like '75 earliest, i thought of them like nirvana. i like rock but i kept thinking beatles. bruh they're from london ☠️
Hated it. Couldn’t even make it through the whole thing.
I did not like it whatsoever
Bröö tästä muista paskaakaan niin paskaa musiikkia taas kuunneltana.. Mitä vittua nyt... YLLÄPITO SAATANA..
General Zod, aka Pete Townsend will never do anything that surprises me. The talentless ass continues to ignite frustration whenever I'm forced to listed to his band The Who. I'd gladly put Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli in the ring with Pete Townsend and root for Pharma Bro to win provided it means kicking the shit outta PT. Is it ironic that PT sings about the kids being alright when we all know this is not the case when he's around them. One star fucktard.
3/10 Beatles çakması gibiydi..
Boring as all hell
Oh boy. the who. My least favorite classic rock band. If I hear "my" in reference to a female figure out of their mouth one more times, I will let them know how I feel about "their generation."
Big single (my generation). Don’t care for the rest.
Eine Party Gang, die vom Style und der Attitüde lebt. Verwechseln Schreien mit Soul.
mediocre white band
Ich möchte das nie wieder hören müssen.
It’s…. Sure.
