Reviews (page 5 of 12)
Un album beaucoup plus soft que ce que Beck m'a habitué avec Odelay et Mellow Gold, mais il n'en démord point que c'est un fishtre de bon album
Que onda indeed, Beck.
I originally gave it three stars but after a few more listens to a few more songs, I’m going to bump it up to four. I have a soft spot for early 2000’s indie rock. There’s something lightweight about it, like a sugary snack. I had only heard Loser before by Beck but I’m glad I listened to this. There’s quite a few songs on here that I really liked, especially E-Pro, the starting track; meaning the album gets off to a great start and manages to hold that momentum throughout the record. It manages not to sound too dated like most early 2000’s music does. It’s quite experimental at times, I didn’t expect the the electronic sound that some of the tracks have, such as Que Ondo Guero, which is a song that definitely grew on me. However, at times it has a blend together kind of sound, with some songs sounding very similar and I was ready for the album to be over about 40 to 45 minutes into the album. But overall, there were some bangers here that kept it at a four.
4 estrelas
I enjoyed this, much more than I thought I would
i really liked this album! idk how to like, describe it, but it was great for like, walking to class and driving home with the windows down, yknow?
4.0
Not bad. I like the variety of different sounds they achieved in the album.
This album takes me back to working at Starbucks as a 22 year old. I still think of it as “new” beck, in fact. Wonder how it’ll hold up. Not his best album, but maybe the best sampler platter of the breadth of his work. Jangly guitar tracks, string laden slower numbers, talk-rapping, everything is on the menu here. A nostalgic 4 stars.
Great Artist, he’s been keeping consistency across his sound for 2 decades now, have to appreciate that.
Like Weird Al, Beck is an artist that I would not have thought was a top one for me. And yet he has played an outsized role in my life. Paid to see him in concert? Yep. Owned most of his albums? Check. Can I tell you the fundamental difference Sea Change and Odelay. Absolutely. So I guess I like Beck. This album is, to me, his most self-assured and confident, taking some of the goofiness of Mellow Gold and Odelay and focusing it into some truly well crafted pop songs. It’s good from start to finish with some real standout tracks. Still obscure and odd, but catchy and enjoyable.
I was looking forward to this one more than the next few albums. And Beck did deliver. You can definitely tell that his style evolved greatly from the first few albums to this. But they do have the sparks of what this became. Near the end, I kinda lost a little interest. It was still good, but I felt like it was going ON, and it was only 49 minutes. Weird. Still, it was a good album and made me want to listen to more of this stuff, so that's a plus, I guess? Top tracks: "Qué Onda Guero", "GIrl," "Black Tambourine," "Hell Yes"
I remember when E-Pro came out as a single, it was like yes, mid 90's Beck is back! Listening to his follow-up single Girl, maybe not exactly. Not the same motif but still a breezy, decently catchy single. I always felt Go It Alone was superior. At any rate, this album was the first thing of his since Odelay that I cared to listen to...on the radio. I don't recognize the other single Hell Yes, but it's classic Beck - nonsensical but interesting rhymes put to a good beat, with a bit of electronica. The whole album has a Latin flair to it, which seems to be the point given the title. It's a bit hit and miss; I really didn't care for the 4-5 softies. But there's enough fun, funky, energetic songs with witty lyrics, which is what I'm looking for from Beck. Qué Onda Guero, Black Tambourine, and Farewell Ride are where it's at. Overall, not bad.
This album is basically cool track after cool track. A lot of contemporaneous reviews compared it to Odelay, but I think this album has its own style. Probably the only "dig" on it is that Beck's slacker vocals get a little repetitive sounding. But I enjoyed the album and would definitely bop to it again. Favorite tracks: E-Pro, Hell Yes, Go It Alone, Farewell Ride, Emergency Exit.
I really enjoyed this album. It kinda reminds me of the Gorillaz but more guitar and grit, and I'm all for it. Definitely could go for a walk listening to this album feeling like a badass. Fun album.
Great album
I was a teen in the 90s, so for me, the more produced and polished Beck's music became, the less I was interested. That being said, there is enough excellent stuff on this album for me to keep it in rotation. My standouts: E-Pro, Missing, Broken Drum, Go It Alone
Solid and unique sound.
Yeah enjoyed this a lot
A good return to form from Beck. I like that sloppy, DIY feel. Talented guy, fun album.
There were for sure some songs on here I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to again but over all I really enjoyed this album
Loved it, will be listening again
This is nice and all. I like it. But how is this different from the other Beck records on this list? Wish there had been a limit to how many records from the same artist. This is good, though.
Prefer Morning Phase
Honestly, I thought I was gonna hate it, but it was fun. It was like an identity confused version of Cake. not the best but it had a variety in the tracks and engaging enough to have in the background and not be a total nuisance.
Only listened to Odelay before this. Nice!
I always forget that I actually quite like Beck, this was good.
I'll be honest, there's a fair bit of nostalgia there for me when listening to this - definitely wore it out when I first got the CD - but I do think it holds up to scrutiny. There's a kind of effortless Laos-back groove through the whole album that makes it a good listen as a whole, and most of the songs are still good as standalone tunes. I will say that Beck's lyrics have never made any sense, and I hope they never do :)
This album is where it’s at and where it went. One of tallest guys I ever saw in concert.
Love beck. Not my favorite album
Nothing to put it over the top. But a very solid album front to back
Not Beck’s best but still better than a lot of albums.
One of my fav albums by one of my fav musicians! this dude s the best will constantly come back to this one Summer, EPRo, and rental car all sew good
4/5 Beck's genre-bending, ever-changing sounds and styles over the course of this cohesive if inconsistent album are definitely enjoyable to experience on first listen. It's not too awe-inspiring though, and there are some meh moments. E-Pro 4.5/5 Que' Onda Guero 4.5/5 Girl 5/5 Missing 2.5/5 Black Tambourine 3/5 Earthquake Weather 4/5 Hell Yes 3.5/5 Broken Drum 3.5/5 Scarecrow 5/5 (FAV) Go It Alone 5/5 Farewell Ride 2.5/5 (LEAST FAV) Rental Car 3.5/5 Emergency Exit 3.5/5
Damn this was way more diverse then anticipated
Not too familiar with Beck, and after this album, I'm still not too sure where to place it. Tracks are of many genres, indie rock, pop, dance but overall good stuff.
Exceptional sounding album, each track is gorgeously written and so uniquely fun. Rich soundscapes and glitchy grooves that rival Gorillaz at that time. Very consistent record that went by quickly. Best Tracks: - Que Onda Guero - Go It Alone - E-Pro Worst Tracks: - Farewell Ride Rating: 7.5/10
Nice beats
E-Pro - not bad, fairly dull *Que' Onda Guero - really like this one. Reminded me of Gorillaz *Girl - LOVE the 8-bit intro. Good song - love the key change that leads into the chorus (and is present throughout it). Love the slide guitar solo. Missing - pretty untuneful and boring *Black Tambourine - pretty sexy *Earthquake Weather - cute. Really unusual tune Hell Yes - love the groove at the start. Sexy song Broken Drum - alright, fairly dull Scarecrow - fairly dull Go It Alone - fairly dull Farewell Ride - dull also. Many the quality of this album massively dips after the first half. Rental Car - dull Emergency Exit - dull Send a Message to Her - kind of Beatles vibe off this one. Pretty good Chain Reaction - not bad - love the video game bits at the end. Song is a bit repetitive. Half and half! Good beginning, dull end, good bonus tracks.
super fun album
Sounded like an album I would make (if I could play an instrument if course 😜)
A great Beck album. Not my favorite, but really good.
4/5
I view this album like a companion piece to Odelay, much like how Morning Phase is a companion piece to Sea Change. It has a similar mash up of styles, but feels a little less frenetic and a little more mature. Only 4/5 because it doesn't have the killer singles that Odelay has.
Favorite album so far, am a sucker for 1990s to 2000s music
I like the vibe of this one, it is simultaneously chill but also cuts. Lookong forward to more of Beck.
Much better than I remember. I may not have been as into Beck as I should have been when this came out. As a HUGE fan for Odelay, this definitely scratches that itch. Poor mans Odelay. 4/5
My favorite songs were the first two and last three. Favorite song: E-pro Least Favorite Song: Scarecrow
Never heard the album before. Good album. No "great" songs for me, but a lot of good ones. A wide variety, and solid throughout.
I liked this more than Odelay. Fun variety of songs. I’ve heard a lot of them before it turns out. A lot of them were in commercials or movies. Most I’ve enjoyed a Beck album thus far.
Not Beck's best record but my personal favorite.
Side 1 was forgettable but side 2 got weird and I liked it
Super talented song writer.
hmm idk not really that much my style but I want to give more folk a shot.
Cool record. Tons of variation and grooves in here, and still has enough for some surprises at the end. 8/10
- I enjoyed this album, for 2005, it's definitely pushing the boundaries a little bit - I particularly enjoyed the sounds from Black Tambourine, that one really jumped out at me - There was a bit of a dull section in the middle there, maybe I wasn't giving the album the attention it deserved on my first run through, but I definitely didn't notice most of it passing through, which means I enjoyed it, because if it was annoying or jarring to me, I would have noticed
I'm a big Beck fan, but haven't really spent a lot of time with this album, or really any of his noisier ones- I love Sea Change and Morning Phase, and I like Hyperspace and Modern Guilt a lot, but haven't investigated this one or his earliest stuff. I did know the opening three tracks, which are all great, and I liked the Bossa nova feel on Missing. There's a kind of modern Mexican/american south-west feeling to a lot of the tracks which is pretty timeless- I was surprised this was from as far back as 2005, because this could be Beck's latest. Scarecrow uses that kind of imagery too - cigarettes, trick cards, junk piles. Farewell Ride has that kind of slide guitar that immediately puts you in a saloon. I connected with Earthquake Weather really quickly and feel like it might be about grief- I googled and saw that Beck was good mates with Elliott Smith, and I wonder if a few tracks are a reaction to his death? Broken Drum works with that too. Only tracks I really didn't like were Chain Reaction and Hell Yes, and I loved the lyrics to Emergency Exit without enjoying it musically (too sludgy). Guero isn't going up against my favourite Beck albums, but I can definitely imagine myself putting it on occasionally.
WELL I found this very very fun, a lot of it didn't make a lot of sense and hard to understand what was being said but loved the different musical changes throughout. I did lose steam about half way through, maybe because it's quite long, or maybe because it just becomes a bittttt monotonous just having quite weird unexplainable songs?? Who knows. But what I have found with this album is the first song from doing this that I have saved to a personal playlist! I loveeee 'Missing'! So so great and I am really happy it was on this album for me to discover. I am now intrigued to listen to more Beck.
Pretty good but it's not even in Beck's best three albums
I really like Beck - but have not really followed his career that closely - just discovered he has released 14 albums - of which I only know 3 - which does not include Guero. I owned and loved Sea Change - the prior album and listened to that on repeat. Guero seems a similar tempo - although not quite as melancholic and after a couple of listens has not yet worked its charms on me. Would like to come back to it so will score a low 4.
It's good, soothing for me for some reason.
Reminiscent of the gorillaz. Very artsy fartsy but still reachable and groovy. Would listen again. Best track - E-Pro
Nice album, there is a lot of indie rock rap sounding things
It’s funny how this album had some songs that could just be radio singles written by anyone, and then the next song you’re just like “oh, this is obviously beck.” He can’t help himself. This was a good listen though. Girl is fun. Broken Drum is sad but probably my favorite track. Light 4.
There is no more chameleon-like artist in rock music than Beck. He is willing to blend multiple styles without regard to genre, and make it work. I hadn't heard this album all the way through before, aslthough I did know a bunch of the songs. I really like it. Will definitely listen again.
Beck is the Dr. Frankenstein of electronica/alt. And not the Hollywood version, but more of the Romantic Anti-hero, creating new life out of the old!
mooi... soms iets te slackerig naar mijn gevoel
This album is a mood board with a range of energy levels, vibes, emotions, and tempos. Beck is quirky and I appreciate it.
A purely enjoyable album. Every genre mash up works. While it has some bangers the highs might not be quite as high as some past albums but it still feels fresh. I didn't pay this much attention but will return. When more can you say.
Not bad, Mr. Beck. Not bad.
jaa!
Liked it..
Didn’t like every cut but overall enjoyed
Yeah I like Beck. Reminds me a little of Tame Impala with how it sounds so wildly blended but it's only one person. Unique instrumentation and different lyrics lift this above the masses for me.
4.5
Sehr überrascht wie gut mir das Album gefallen hat. Finde Alternative Rock ist sonst so Hippie-Schwachsinn, auf der gleichen Ebene wie Ska, aber der Jung hat mir gefallen. 4 Sterne
4.1 2x catch up 12/6/2024 great album
Fun album to listen to. For me it was full of surprises because it doesn't stick to one genre.
I hadn’t heard this one before but it reminds me of the Beck I liked.
Electronic music I actually enjoyed. Some songs weren’t for me, but had a good time overall. Definitely enjoyed the latter half of the album. Fav song: Farewell Ride Least Fav: Hell Yes Least Fav:
I forgot about this album. I had stopped listening to Beck after Mutations. Turns out I recognized a few of these songs! Some good stuff that feels more like Odelay than what came between Odelay and this one.
This album is pretty sweet. The style is all over the place and really keeps things interesting.
Great album! Still holds up today, I like Beck's times where it's faster paced.
Nice vibe
Honestly a really fun album. Jumps around and a few skips but I liked revisiting this one.
It sounds like some soundtracks to every movie but in a good way
very fun and eclectic alt rock shenanigans. a good time
Another solid Beck and Dust Brothers collab
plan on listening more
Beck brings a creativity and diversity in his music that is effective and rarely emulated elsewhere. Guero is a fantastic return to his prior style and hits it out of the park. The opening 3 songs pack an incredible punch, but it remains a very solid album from front to back otherwise. Easily deserving of the list, and I expect to see other Beck entries in the future. In the wise words of Bender Bending Rodriguez, Beck is a musician-poet who transcends genres even as he re-invents them. Beck is one of the best working musicians of the past 30 years and I'll support his work as long as his career continues to evolve. 4.21 stars
Groovy
great album, will definitely listen again
Such a cool, ambient, dirty, folky album. There are like 50 adjectives you could slap on that list too. Beck is so creative and such an innovator without sacrificing making an album that’s actually nice to listen too. For my money, I really like his later stuff that goes a little bit further off the instrument deep end but this is a very solid album.
Over indexes on being vibe-y in the back half, but still a great album that reminds me of a specific time in my life.
Much better than Odelay. It seems like he matured musically or at least leaning more on the Dust Brothers in the writing department. The riffs and lines seem more direct and less "throw it at the wall and see what sticks." High points for me are 'E-Pro', 'Go It Alone', and his tribute to the late Elliot Smith 'Broken Drum'
A lot of my favorite Beck songs are on this album, it turns out.
I thought this was pretty good, a wide variety of styles but a consistent quality. Favorite track: "Go It Alone."
Enjoyed it! This is the second or third Beck album I have heard from this list and they make me feel like I should listen to him more.
This was a great album, plus the Dust Brothers. I love this album, but it's not my favorite Beck (still Mutations). This is more edited and straightforward, but I love it all the same.
This album has more variation in styles and genres than most radio stations. Still somehow managed to feel cohesive. While it did not blow me away immediately, I see all the hallmarks of this being an album that grows on you so I'll add a star in advance.
Some of the tracks don't work for me, or are a bit self-indulgent (Hell Yes) but overall this is a really good album that I would listen to again
Really dig it. Love the variety of styles on the album. Apparently I like Beck.
4 I’m not the biggest fan of Beck’s music, so I wasn’t expecting a ton going into this given that I previously rated his more popular albums pretty modestly, but I actually think this is my newfound favorite of his. Granted, it’s not drastically different from what I’ve heard from him in the past - it’s still the same brand of white boy rap - but this really feels like a collection of songs containing his best takes on it. The highlight for sure is the opener, E-Pro, which has a great energy and insanely catchy chorus to it (that allegedly samples So What’Cha Want by Beastie Boys, but I don’t hear it). It’s the kind of the song that makes you feel like the coolest guy in the room when you’re walking around listening to it. And not far behind it are Girl, Black Tambourine, and Go It Alone, which are also all super catchy tracks by their own merits, though especially that last one, which also happens to feature Jack White on bass - a fact that totally tracks in hindsight. I mean, come on, tell me it doesn’t sound like a borderline White Stripes song. And even the three tracks leading up to that one - Hell Yes (featuring Christina Ricci on guest vocals), Broken Drum (a touching tribute to Elliot Smith), and Scarecrow (no fun fact on this one, sorry) - are all really solid as well. As probably goes without saying, I enjoyed most everything here, though I will say, the three songs that end the album are probably the weakest. The Western-style guitar work on Farewell Ride is kind of cool I suppose, but it marks the start of a sort of decline in the album that it never picks back up from. Still, there’s nothing to be found in these closing moments that ruins the experience or really even disrupts the flow for that matter, so I have no major complaints. Overall, really good, well-paced album. While I’ve never considered myself much of a Beck fan, I definitely see myself listening to this one again. Hell, maybe I’m just a contrarian, but this is THE Beck release as far as I’m concerned.
8/10
Another win from Beck
I liked it! Was torn between 3 and 4 stars but I reckon it’s a 4-er. Was bit like cross between gorillaz and the police
Thought this really worked. No major standouts but whole album just flowed
I love this album, it might be in my top 3 Beck albums, but it should end on Farewell Ride; Rental Car and Emergency Exit are extraneous
Day 52 - Oct 19th, 2024 Painfully 2000s, but oh so good. 4/5
This one feels like flipping through radio stations on a long drive. There’s a blend of beats and melodies that pull from everywhere, like old-school hip-hop meeting lo-fi rock. Some tracks remind me of the playful weirdness you get with early Beastie Boys, but softer, less chaotic. The production is gritty yet polished, layering a lot without feeling heavy. It’s like taking a stroll through a collage of sounds, each track surprising in its own way.
jaa väärä beckki.. aina saa pettyä kun tulee vastaan yksananen.. eipä ollut kitarabekki... oli retardibekki... no osaa sentään käyttää retardiuttaan hyväkseen. valitettavasti sanantoisto rokkia tässäkin mukana, mutta pääosin aika kiinnostavaa retardi vammais musiikkia. crazy wackiness, what will he do next??????? becksfitness voisi syödä niitä donitsejakin vähän. kalifornia lilliputti kuitenkin niin ei saada lihaa naperoon väkisinkään.. sentään vähän sitä painoa niillä donitseilla kuitenkin saataisiin. semmonen fiilis että huomenna kostelloa.. siinä tapauksessa ylläpito ole hyvä ja poistu voin valita omat albumini tästä lähtien... que honda
Best of Beck's
Had no idea what to expect when starting this, but I was pleasantly surprised! I was quite busy with some work when listening to this, but it still grabbed my attention, which is quite a testament. 'E-Pro' immediately felt recognizable. I wonder if it has been in some famous commercial or something. Nevertheless, good song! The rest of the tracks continued along the same track; a bit experimental with quite heavy grooves. Reminded me of Gorillaz at times, in a good way. Funny thing with the record is, Beck doesn't look at all like a person who'd make this type of music. He looks more like he'd fit in the Lumineers, and I'd expect someone closer resembling Shift Shellshock or something to be the author of this. Funny how wrong you can be! I find it hard to single out particularly good songs, except perhaps aforementioned 'E-Pro', and 'Que' Onda Guero'. I just think the whole record was really good and nice to listen to. I'm going to give it a 4 for now, but this could be a 5 if I give it a proper swing again and get more into it.
I really like Beck. I don’t know if I love him though. I certainly like his early stuff. I haven’t listened to this album before. I only knew E-Pro which is a very good song. This whole album is good. I don’t think I have much else to say about it other than it’s good and I like it.
A very interesting album. I enjoyed most of it, the mix of rap and vocal tracks was a nice contrast.
Liked this more than I thought I would! Added a couple tracks to my faves playlist (E-pro, girl, earthquake weather, and rental car).
10/4/24. I think I hit a year of reviewing albums! I always appreciate Beck's wide repertoire and trying different genres. The songs on this one are a ton of fun.
Really good shit that
Missing, Black Trampoline, Earthquake Weather, Hell Yes, Go it Alone were the highlights on a very strong album.
Been jammin a lot of Beck recently
Stunningly solid first half. Big beats, fun samples, and Beck's traditional lackidasical attitude. Second half slows considerably, especially after "Hell Yes", and flits with delta blues mixed with the aforementioned big beats. I could see myself going back to the second half, but after initial listen it just sucked the life out of me. Call it all a 3.5. Favorite Tracks: "Que Onda Guero", "E-Pro", "Black Tambourine"
Favorite Qué onda guero
Cool album
Unique beats that felt enjoyable to see how they'd be evolving. I'm not sure if I'd listen to it regularly, but at least it was a pleasant album to run into
Where has Beck been all my life? I had “Odelay” a while back for this project, and simply loved it. He’s such a creative force in every way. Taking established norms and turning them on their heads, innovating and experimenting and being unapologetic about the results be they good or bad. He is truly himself as an artist and it’s fun to listen to. Scrubbing back through this album and tracking all the different genres and influences I hear is kinda mind blowing. There’s rock, some rap/hip hop, blues, funk, and prog rock all here. It’s a great mishmash that never really lets up. There’s a range of moods and sounds here, from the radio hits like E-Pro to the sadder more reflective stuff like Broken Drum. Something for everyone. Excellent stuff. Four stars. Standout Tracks: E-Pro, Que’Onda Guero, Girl, Missing, Broken Drum, Scarecrow, Go it Alonr
Solid 4.5 with some easy listening babgers
Go it alone and farewell ride stood out to me. Chain reaction was probably the most beck sounding. The sounds were a little randomly jumbled throughout the album, but still fabulous. Probably not my favourite of beck but the second half grew on me a lot
Surpsingly good, I've never been a big Stones fan, but this was excellent. You can tell it came on the heels of Sticky Fingers.
This album was honestly way better than I expected. It has some notably catchy songs being the first two but the overall sound is really something I admire. The charm that Beck brings into the album really establishes a cohesive well thought-out album. Great listen! Top 3 Favorites: Que' Onda Guero, E-Pro, and Emergency Exit Top 3 Worst: none 3.75-4.00/5
Хороший альбом, что неудивительно для Бека. Много хороших песен, но не могу выделить лучшие. Ровный хороший альбом, атмосферный. Некоторые мелодии напоминали мелодии из Sea change (оно и понятно, это два последовательных альбома).
Beck delves into all of his old tricks with previous producers The Dust Brothers from his albums before. Fried vocals, swampy blues, dadist word play, off-kilter samples, electronic beeps and some killer melodies. Is it a retread of the better album Odelay? Yes. But I don't care - this is the Beck I like. Best Tracks: E-Pro; Girl; Go It Alone
Good guitar stuff, it some weird stuff in there that I enjoyed less.
Like
Glad we didn't kill him
Loved it
Absolutely brilliant album. I found alot of the music the be very enticing with great guitar work and sounds that caught me off guard. Every song was unique yet worked brilliantly together as an album. The stand out song has to be "Broken Drum", the simple beat with no chorus made the song flow brilliantly and made for a great listen. Would highly recommend this album for anyone. The album is only being docked one star as I think it lacks the absolute perfection that a 5 star would entail.
More Beck! This is fairly similar to the last album we had, I recognised a few tracks. Interesting to read broken drum was about Elliott Smith. Again, quite eclectic. Didn't rate "hell yes" though. Probably didn't think it was quite as good as odelay I don't think 3.5
This was a great album. A good amount of variation throughout, some really standout tracks, and an enjoyable experience from beginning to end.
Niceness from beckness
NOTE TO MYSELF: Listen to more Beck. You think it's OK, but when you really get into it you really like it.
No shade on Beck and his collaborators for this record when it is so brilliant, cool and understated. Not my favorite, but it's like comparing chocolate to other pleasures. Please, don't make me choose.
This was a very pleasant change from the past few albums I've gotten! There was something new with every track. I really enjoyed the whole album. 8/10 Would I listen again? Yes
Charming fun little turn of the millenia album. Often overlooked in my usual appreciation of alternative rock. Combines rich and lush vocals in singer songwriter based tracks, deep rythmn and blues influence, and hip hop to come together is this very VERY modern sound for 2005. Beck was always ahead of his time.
Generally a Beck fan, this record has clear influences, but in some ways is more straightforward -- less found sounds, less generally weird -- at least that's my feeling from a listen or two. It was in some editions of the 1001 but was subsequently dropped. I think it's actually pretty good, and while I get that they don't generally go back and revise the older years much, it seems weird to me that it was dropped, there are some interesting tunes on it, and it's got an unusual overall concept, kind of a wild mélange of world music influences.
Beck creates enjoyable and (for me) thought provoking tunes. Stealing Stephen Wilson's term "magpie" for Beck, he gathers bits from a broad range of sources, reordering and reconstructing them in intriguing ways, but not with out soul and whole lot of catchiness. Surrealistic, other-worldly, mystical, and wack. Yeah I said wack 'cause I too am a linguistic magpie!
I very much liked this record.
A really nice surprise. Never heard of them and never heard anything from them. Great sound, great songs (not all but relatively many) and never boring.
The closest I’ve gotten to liking Beck!!! I know it sounds like the type of thing you borrow from your friend who stole it from his older brother who you think is cool and edgy and maybe even hot, even though he just watches Spike TV and wears Axe Body Spray. But to my own surprise, I’m kind of okay with that this time around. At least I’m more supportive of Guero than I am of Odelay. It has a still-clinging-to-the-‘90s-post-9/11 vibe that I’m cool with. It’s very ✨white hipster living in Williamsburg✨, kinda cringey, and maybe a bit too maximalist; it’s a product of its time, for sure, and also sounds like it’s trying to sell me a product, like the new iPod Mini or a Kia Soul. But despite these potential pitfalls, Guero is still fun, has an early summer joyfulness to it, and, unlike the other Beck albums I’ve heard, doesn’t feel self-serious or self-absorbed. It’s just dorky and silly, and I find that really endearing in music. In my opinion, that wins out over whatever cultural ✨product of its time✨ critique you could throw at it. Honestly, Guero is what I expected all of Beck’s discography to sound like, in retrospect. So I’m surprised this is the first album of his that I’d describe as legitimately fun. Because everything else I’ve heard from him is so goddamn dour and trying so hard to be intellectual, I think I just walked into this expecting to loathe it. The fact that I’m a fan is a pleasant surprise! Like, this isn’t my new favorite record by any estimation, but I’m wondering now if I was just being a hater on his last albums. It’s unfortunate that this is the last of his albums I pulled from the generator, though, because I really enjoy this. I’m glad I’m ending Beck’s entries on this list on a high note with Guero. Let’s hope there’s some other albums in his back catalog that are closer to this than Sea Change.
Fire. Biased by familiarity but it shined more than I remember.
This is decent and generally good (if dilettante-ish) fun, but clearly not as interesting/compelling as Odelay, as seems nearly universally acknowledged in the reviews. But perhaps it's more a case of Beck actually not being that great in the first place. Taking the glass-half-full view, one can say this is awfully good for a pastiche, which it very much is, as Beck creates and sustains a decently interesting and groovy vibe across more or less the whole record. "Girl" and "Earthquake Weather" seem the strongest tracks.
This is almost a five. This album has got some really great songs that just tend to stick around in memory. Beck is always inventive. Sometimes it's a huge miss for me, and sometimes that hits just right, as it does here.
Pretty good. Reminiscent of the gorillaz debut with a weird combo of hip-hop, rock and almost country. Some good singles and some unmemorable ones in amongst them. 15/08/24
E-Pro coming in hot! Girl also with the mid 2000's hit! This super slick rap rock sampling is very peak 2000s production, so this album is really a time capsule, see Hell Yes. digging the hell out of it though. The back half gets super swampy and dark. really cool album, though i cant justify a 5 for it.
Really enjoying the instrumentals and just about all the tracks Tracks 12 and 13 are a bit ordinary. All the rest a great in their own way. There's a few tracks where Beck has the Chris Cornell-lite vocal style common with grunge rock from around this period. I don't mind it, and works for these songs more often than not. My highlights: E-Pro and Broken Drum, the guitar was spectacular on these two. Scarecrow, luv me harmonica, simple as. Missing, excellent string section popping in reminded me of some late Beatles songs. Honourable Mentions: Go it Alone, Hell Yes and Girl, very fun groovy tunes Overall a great album, lots of variety, superb instrumentals throughout. Vocals solid overall.
Originally I thought that Beck was a character made up for that one Futurama episode where Bender becomes a folk musician. I really enjoyed this album. I don’t think there’s much on there that I can single out. I’ve listened to the album like 4 times since it came up for review and each time I’ve been doing something else while I’ve been listening so I’ve not really noted the names of the particular songs. There’s a lot of variety here and in a good way. The song blend together to give it cohesion as an album but they’re all fairly different in their own ways. E-Pro and Girl were the big standouts for me and have been absolute earworms. Straight into the liked playlist when I heard them. Had a really weird moment discussing this album on Friday night and hearing a song playing on the bar speakers which coincidentally was also a Beck song which I found out after asking the bartender. I liked this album.
Quality bit of Beck
This is nice and all. I like it. But how is this different from the other Beck records on this list? This is another unfortunate example of the author fan-girling and wasting a spot. There’s not some big evolution in Beck’s style. There’s no invention or experimentation. It’s just a nice Beck record. Wish there had been a limit to how many records from the same artist. This is good, though.
I like Beck’s vibe. This is good. I really should have listened to his stuff more. This dips slightly a couple of times which brings it back from edging towards a 5
Girl, E-Pro, and Go It Alone are in my regular rotation. Love this album and listen to it all the time, but it's got a handful of skippable tracks (Broken Drum and Scarecrow don't do it for me) and it's not in my top 3 for Beck albums. It reminds me of Odelay but not all of the experimentation always lands quite right.
Not enough spins when The album was first released. Odelay's equal. This album seems like Beck took "Beautiful Way" and "Derelict" and fleshed out variations on the same theme. The singles are very much Midnight Vultures. Great album.
A mix of songs, some a little noisy. Broken Drum is a very powerful haunting song.
When the last Beck album was on here, I went down the rabbit hole and rediscovered this one along the way. I love this album and only just learned that it was produced by the Dust Brothers -- the same pair responsible for the Beastie Boys classic Paul's Boutique. E-Pro has great energy out of the gate; wonderfully propulsive. Que Onda Guero is a top 3 Beck song to me. Goofy as hell, but something about the groove of it has always hit right for me. Missing pulls the handbrake and flips things into a spacious, languid croon made for listening to on a late summertime walk. Earthquake Weather has a similar energy to it that I enjoy. Other standouts to me are Hell Yes, Go It Alone, and Rental Car. All solid songs in their own right. This album is a solid 4 in my eyes. Lot of diversity and solid songwriting here. Only drawback is that it drags a little in the back half.
Groovy. Beck never disappoints.
There are certainly quite a few Beck albums that have made this list. This one I enjoyed a lot.
Beck makes good tunes.
I remembered Beck’s appearance on Futurama by the second track, which made me laugh. Qué Onda Guero is good and makes me dance in my chair. Black Tambourine and Go it Alone slap too
I liked it a lot, it was fun and pairs well with a hot clammy summer's night. Somehow takes me back to 2005 despite not even knowing of the album back then when I was 10.
Loved this I think it’s so interesting and such a bop.
Broken Drum, Farewell Ride, Rental Car, Emergency Exit are too slow
Favourite Song: Go It Alone
Favourite song - Que Onda Guero
Cool grooves. Cool sounds. Like the change of styles.
I love this early Beck sound
Really liked this one! E-Pro, Girl and Missing
Not bad. A contender for five stars but needs more listens. Also think the first two songs are a really weak start for this.
Chill music, nice to just play in the background and vibe to,
Not my favorite Beck album, but a solid entry. All the good elements are there, cool beats, eclectic lyrics, general quirkiness…
Great production across the board. I really enjoyed the laid back, eclectic feel of most of the album. I felt like rental car and e-pro subtracted from this a bit, but I can see them fitting well with someone more accustomed to the sound. Great album, imagine if Jay-Z had a verse on hell yes.
Top 4 Beck for sure! 4.5
A great, funky album from everyone's favorite Loser. In my opinion, this one falls into the winner camp.
That was very cool. Relaxed at some points, very crazy at others. I think I’m becoming a huge fan!
Beck is back! Odelay.
Strage album the I liked a lot at times and also didn't at others. The singles on it are my least favorite here. E-Pro and Girl are pretty standard and boring alt rock to me that I've heard too much before. But others here were new that I really liked. The standout for me was Missing. Qué Onda Guero and Scarecrow were cool too. All in all, I liked the album.
Actually love love loved this one. Was hesitant going into it because I had higher expectations for Sea Change when I got that a couple weeks ago but I like this album much better.
Good album, you don't need to track over any songs, and at least three standouts.
This one is great. Really really great. I want to go 5, but its probably a very very high 4. I love E Pro, great opener, great riff, love it All the singles are fantastic. I LOVE Go It Alone. Great album Let's say 4. happy enough
Prima album, af en toe wat veel van hetzelfde. Lekker ontspannen, best wat coole nummers
Solid
4/5
like don't love...still really enjoyable tho 7/10
I have one song(Heart is a Drum) by beck in my liked songs which is more of a connection than what I usually have to these albums. That song is a different vibe from this album tho. Also since looking at the albums that have been taken out of the book I’m very judgmental of any post 2000 album. I don’t like the lo fi rap thing he’s got going on but everything other than that I enjoyed. Rating based on what’s good rather than what’s not like a 7/10
Good work jam 7.5/10
Beck is a little boring but I do mostly enjoy the music
This was a new one to me, I’ve listened to other Beck albums (mostly the older ones) but had never heard this album aside from the first track. Scratches a similar itch to Gorillaz - alternative/hip hop/electronic mix with a good vibe to it. Only complaint was that it dragged a bit at parts, but overall, really liked it.
Je connaissais Beck. Enfin je connaissais ses hits, quant au reste... rien ! Artiste au style assez insaisissable je n'ai jamais su par quel bout découvrir sa discographie. L'essai est totalement transformé avec Guero. L'album m'a tour à tour évoqué Gorillaz, Cypress Hill, Eels, Sublime... Solaire !
Per usual with Beck, highly inventive and entertaining. 4/5
What a pleasant surprise! I had a lot of fun with this, right from track one. A lot of fun and variety for me, nice find. ⭐️ earthquake weather, e-pro, hell yes
i listened to this in like 2021 and it recs in 2024. hm. also tf is he saying in the chorus of girl
E-Pro 4 Que Onda Guero 4.2 Girl 3.8 Missing 4 Black Tambourine 3.5 Earthquake Weather 4 Hell Yes 4.2 Broken Drum 4 Scarecrow 3.3 Go It Alone 3.8 Farewell Ride 3.2 Rental Car 3.6 Emergency Exit 3.7 Score: 3.792307692
Surprisingly good.
Excellent, soul/funk tinged Beck
Very uplifting pop-rock with some hints of grunge. Lots of great hooks and great production. The first time I have listened to an album by Beck and I dug it!
4 - only listened to loser before this. half the album sounds like garageband demos id make on my phone.
Really fuckin good and badass, didn’t know I liked beck like that
Starts off very strong with more electric tracks like 'Girl' and the opening 'E-Pro', only to fall into more boring and at times bad songs, such as the very annoying 'Farewell Ride'. These don't detract from the album too much, which is overall very decent, but it does cause the album to lose points, along with the mumbled singing and nonsense lyrics. Good for a listen, but nothing soul-moving.
Another great Beck album. Awesome rhythms, great guitar riffs, even a more refined version of Odelay. 4/5!
makes me want to walk through LA in a jean jacket flipping a quarter and catching it without looking, an unlit cig behind the ear
Funky and weird
Personal classic. Two white horses in a line……
I don't listen to a lot of Beck, but I do know this album pretty well and already like it a lot. I've always liked how broadly ranging in styles Beck's music is, and this album is a great example of that. Favorite song is easily Que Onda Guero. The interspersed samples give it a super whimsical quality I really like. 4.25/5
Beck is good. This is fun. That being said, it's not all that memorable for me. I did enjoy it, but he has better stuff. 3.5/5
Pretty solid LP, but it’s no Odelay or Sea Change. Wouldn’t be my first choice for Beck. B
Very good. Not sure why I haven't listened to this in so long but it's nice to rediscover it now
Love the lo-fi sound with slacker singer sound to death. "Hell Yes" is the worst on the album. "Broken Drum" turns it back around immediately though.
Generally good fun, if a bit backward-looking, not just to his '90s work but to the '70s even, a decade Beck would no doubt have felt quite at home in. "Girl" is a very good track. His heart doesn't feel fully in every song, but will round up because of the general creativity and willingness to be all over the place in a mostly likable – a somewhat tepid 4.
Beck went back to his roots on this one. Smooth and cozy jams. Sometimes he tries too hard but Guero feels just right.
This is one of the first albums I think that really has suffered from the ordering. After two quick, light early genre albums, Beck's irony feels a little drawn out and dry. Am still a fan of his avant garde style and Chicano influence, but as someone who'd generally say I like Beck, was underwhelmed and a bit tired from this album. I'm giving it the 4 I think it deserves but this listen was a 3 for me.
Loved this one! Really loved the twangy parts of the album. Saved 5 songs from thus; Farewell ride, broken drum, earthquake weather, e-pro, and go it alone.
Bend it like Beck!
I really like the soundscape he went for on this one. It sounds really urban/digital but the early 2000s way, it’s the same vibe and nostalgia I get from Futurama. The little bits of funk tone sprinkled throughout really do it for me as well (3.5/5)
I listened to this on a Metro ride from Long Beach to downtown LA, and seemed like just about a perfect soundtrack. I have to admit that I’ve always felt like Beck is trying a little too hard to be too cool for school instead of just being it, but I dunno man - even if that’s true he’s pretty fuckin cool on this one.
Great variety of songs, each with unique sounds and tones.
A fun quirky listen as expected. Beck always delivers something unique and groundbreaking from his weird musical genius soul. I love it.
Decent, kind of unique
Another good album that if I had listened to a bunch I may have given a 5 (prolly not tho)
This is a great album. Beck does so much hopping around between genres, styles and instruments and it's always fun and arresting. I don't think Guero quite reaches the highs of Odelay or the fun of Midnite Vultures but it's got good to great songs peppered throughout and never really dips too far below the median.
E-Pro Rocks! Great album from a great artist. A few more listens and I think will be 5/5, but a very very strong 4/5 for now.
I've already heard the opening track "E-Pro" off the Rock Band 2 video game, and it's still a bop with the crunchy guitarwork over the sampled rhythm section from the Beastie Boys' "So What'cha Want." The rest of Guero continues down this path of alternative rock with hip-hop influences, sample use, and strong beats courtesy of the Dust Brothers. The momentum slows down toward the final two tracks, but overall the album was enjoyable.
This is absolutely brilliant. So close to a 5.
While my favorite Beck is the moody Beck that showed up in full for Sea Change and still drops by on occasion (see: Broken Drum this record) to provide quality music I can to mope to, I can also appreciate the uptempo fuzzy-dance and yet somehow lazy-rap Beck. That punning, surrealist pop star version of Beck dominates this enjoyable album. And yet, some of the weirder corners of the Beck Mind (see: Midnight Vultures record) have also been tamed. In other words Guero is far out, but not too far out. I guess this is what a balanced Beck sounds like.
Over the years I’ve built up a big collection of Beck cd’s from op-shops & this is just about my favourite. So diverse - from the poppy (e.g. Girl, Send A Message To Her) to the very funky (Money Mark’s organ solo on Earthquake Weather) to the Latino influence all over it to the hip-hop influence (e.g."Qué Onda Guero"). Sometimes his vocals are reminiscent of Michael Stipe. The funky Hell Yes features Christina Ricci’s spoken part; Petra Haden’s vocals (she’s a fave of mine) feature on Rental Car; Go It Alone is built around Jack White’s bass part; & Beck’s slide guitar is terrific often (e.g. Farewell Ride, Emergency Exit). I really like this album.
Half of this album is truck month rock while the other is cool sampling. Ehh.. not bad but not terrible and it has its moments.
Beck is a consummate musician with very unique lyrics. Though not his best album it was a fantastic listen and fun! 3.7 stars
Such a fun album!
Grade so die 4 erreicht. Fetter Sound, auch wenn es nicht immer meinen Geschmack zu 100% trifft.
Chewy low-fi cut-and-paste tastiness.
Much more low-tempo bluesy rock than I expected, with a few tracks toward the front of the album feeling like the bombastic Beck that I'm used to. Very fun album, great mood setting, and more relaxing than expected.
first beck album i've listened in one sitting and this was quite a welcomed surprise - some of the tracks were giving discount gorillaz but i fw them heavy
Great album!!
This one’s my favourite Beck - all crunchy guitars and wacked-out hip-hop. I forgot how many tracks on this disc made my head bop. It should be noted that Beck’s lyricist skills are singularly unique and wondrous. It’s like a stream-of-consciousness prayer by an LSD-soaked thesaurus.
Surprisingly great.
Beck is one of those artists that on paper I wouldn't expect liking their music, but in reality he really knows how to make catchy and interesting songs!
Good album good mix of genres with rock, electronic and hip hop influences.
The definitive Beck album. A great country folk punk pop funk techno album that has a wide variety of music with Beck’s distinctly monotone voice bringing it all together. 8/10
Surprised by the mix of different genres well worth a listen
Very good peak Beck.
This album is one of Beck’s best. It begins with nods to his LA roots incorporating elements of alt hip hop and expands to just about everywhere. There are folk, reggae, R&B, alt-rock, blues, and garage elements here and that’s not even everything. The through line here is the groove that carries the album forward. Beck’s lyrics are silly, surreal, and abstract in the best way that preserves a sense of playfulness.
I knew some of the songs on this album of course, and Odelay was in my mum's regular car music rotation so I'm pretty familiar with Beck in general, I think. I kinda wish I wasn't a person who liked this but I think I need to accept that I am.
Beck is an alien. How else do you explain going from “Sea Change” to this. He’s, as Chuck Klosterman likes to say, “advanced.” It’s hard to say what the quintessential Beck album is … because each one is so different. This one is closer to “Odelay” than “Sea Change” but it’s its own unique organism.
Guero is a Beck's ninth studio album - a collection of songs about Beck's childhood in a Hispanic neighborhood of Los Angeles. They are typical of Beck's style of alt-rock: vocals that wander toward spoken word and even rap, a range of rhythmic styles with regular transitions, and engaging melodies. Beck has made successful, popular songs throughout his career; this chapter includes "Girl" and "E-Pro." Guero is a great collection of songs that demonstrate Beck's range and songwriting abilities.
It's great
Beck is always such a pleasant adventure. This was great.
Pretty good stuff
Pretty much the classic Beck sound. Couple of hits, so good songs. Definitely worth a 3rd and 4th listen. A pop song here. A ballad there. Makes for interesting listening.
Fun adventurous and quirky. The songs each really contribute their own little bit of style and swag in an eccentric and unusual way. Things like E-Pro, Guero, Girl, Hell Yes, Go It Alone are all catchy, while there is still something that is engaging with tracks like Broken Drum and Black Tambourine. Everything is really solid.
Had not really listened to much Beck except the songs played on the radio. His mixture of style, voice, and music is top shelf.
gute handgemachte Musik mit hörbaren Guitarren-Riffs
This album is such a stark juxtaposition to “Sea Change,” the Beck album we heard yesterday, but just as enjoyable.
Two Beck albums in a row and it really put his versatility as a musician on display. I really liked this album a lot, some really nice beats. I would put this album on again for sure it’s got some great stuff. 4.5
Rellyy good!
Would be the best beck album if it kept up with the first three tracks. Sadly, it doesn't.
Not sure we need so many Beck albums but I have actually warmed to them throughout the process. I may even go check out his other stuff. Isn't that why we're all here anyway?
Groovy, loop-based jams with a gritty tone and rhythmic, almost spoken-word vocals. Different that other Beck albums, but loads of fun to bump while cruising in the sunshine.
Overall the album was very enjoyable, I especially liked the variety between songs and even within individual songs. Beck experiments with a lot of different genres and for the most part is adept with each one. The first two songs are a great example. E-Pro is a catchy rock song while the second one is like a spanish-infused rap, but both are equally effective. All that variety did result in a couple of missteps in my opinion. I liked the idea behind Hell Yes but the execution was a bit clumsy. However, the biggest offender for me was easily Farewell Ride. This song is all over the place and not in a good way. I expect I'll be skipping this track on repeat listens, but overall a great album.
Love me a bit o' Beck
Not upset by it. I'm mostly interested in the album cover. Where do I procure such chairs?
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. I like how it kept me on my toes and didn’t stick to one genre. I think he did a little bit of everything well on this project. However, I think it suffered from the Jack of all trades but master of none syndrome. I would’ve liked to see him lock in on one sound and give us a beautiful experience with it. Ultimately, it was still a solid project. Loved the tribute song to Elliott Smith as well.
Some great songs, feels more like a solid pop album which makes it slightly less interesting than earlier albums.
Really enjoyed this album. Some good songs and really great drum beats. I saved a few to listen to again
Good
3.9
4.5
4.7
Not listened to this one all the way through before today, not the best Beck album (Scott Pilgrim vs the World) nor my favorite (also Scott Pilgrim), but it's solid. Added a few track to my various playlists.
Hell yes
Love this album. Favorite tracks: Broken Drum and Hell Yes
Ah, Beck! Love him as you never know what you’re going to get album to album in the best way possible; truly one of the few artists that can authentically jump amongst multiple genres and still keep things cohesive. This one isn’t my fav, but it’s still a winner.
Great
Not Beck’s best album not far away. A4.5
I forgot how consistent and thoroughly good this Beck album is. Some of his albums are a bit disjointed. Arguably, this might be his best album start to finish. Not the highs of Odelay but just straight solid gold alt-indie rock throughout. A few tracks jumped out to me on relistening (Black Tambourine, Go It Alone). Of course, there's the hits too (E-Pro, Que' Onda Guero, Girl, Hell Yes) Please remind this guero to play this album more!
Beck, to me, is one of those artists that makes music that’s too avant garde for me to understand what’s going on, but not avant garde enough for me not to enjoy it. “Kindness will find you / Children will wander ‘til the end”. What’s this guy talking about? Sounds cool though, right. Unique and original writing as always, vocals and instrumentation work great, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome. 4/5
Chill yo
Great album. Second only to Odelay in Beck’s catalog.
cool chill pop rock stuff
Always up for a bit of Beck. I like the guitar tone on Black Tambourine. A strong 4.
I forgot how many of the deeper cuts on this album hold up. Makes me want to start a Beck deep dive again. 4/5
I knew the heavier top half more than the lighter back half. Enjoyed both. Classic CD album
I've always loved Beck! Midnite vultures remaines my favourite though
Love me some Beck. This album was one that I didn’t listen to all of the time but has some great beats and classics. Such a unique take on song construction.
This album was so fun. Loved the first 2 songs and really enjoyed listening to it. The back half of the album dragged a bit. Wish I could give it 3.5
Didn’t know this album by Beck and it doesn’t have my two favorite Beck songs on it but I really enjoyed it. An album with different sounding songs is a pleasant surprise.
This one was really interesting, the kind of album I hoped to find on this list.
Surprised by the stylistic range! Triphop and beachy grunge?
Loved this music in high school
Funky funky funky. I've had a minor level Beck blind spot, and at times, I remembered why, as it's probably a little too (think of another word, nope, I can't) funky. But there are some really great tunes on here, and it's extremely enjoyable, and ultimately, isn't that what it's all about? No idea what any of it means, but I like it.
Listened 2/28/24. New one for me. Really enjoyed it. Several different styles. Sorry I missed it when it originally came out.
