Reviews (page 3 of 12)
Love the groove in this one. The synthesizers are amazing, love the electronic pop vibe. It brings the Gorillaz to my mind. Very creative with influences from multiple genres. I love it. 5/5
Amazing album, as always!
E-pro: fantastic from fist chords. Great song.
fun rock
Damn. I really liked this one
I feel the same way about every Beck album. It's just... a lot. If these albums were 30-35 minutes long, I think I'd love every single one of them. But, every time I have to listen to a Beck album from top to bottom, I find myself worn out by the end from the sheer quirkiness of everything. It takes WORK for me listen to a Beck joint. Unlike past Beck albums, however, I enjoyed the work of listening to "Guero" a great deal. It's a great album. The songwriting is great, the performances are fun, the production is solid. There was enough going on here to keep it interesting but not so much (unlike other Beck projects) to drive me to distraction. These songs have a familiar form without being formulaic. "Guero" might be Beck's most balanced album. The only complaint I can find is that it's still just a lot of quirkiness for a single listening session. But that's not enough to overcome everything this album does right. Full marks.
Loved it. Funky as heck
Always thought this was his best album by a mile but even in surprised at this rating
Always excited when a Beck album pops up and this didn't disappoint. The man is a musical genius and has an innate ability to keep things interesting. Pretty lazy review that doesn't do it justice but I really loved it.
Très bon. Quel artiste ce Beck, je ne serais jamais allé vers lui mais c'est album sont vraiment bon ! 5
I really liked the singles from this in 2005 and never got round to listening to this album. I really enjoyed it, it had a lot of elements I like in an album, especially the use of different styles but still having an overall feel. I thought the choruses were really strong and memorable. I like weird/experimental albums, and considering I liked it a lot on a first listen I’m giving it 5/5.
Nothing but bangers. This was Beck's last masterpiece.
On first listen - this isn't as good as Odelay. I think, however, that this is because for some reason the production doesn't quite fit Beck's vocals. His style and musicality is just great - but for some reason his voice just don't settle in right with the rest of the instrumentals. This is really highlighted in the standout-track of the album - Rental Car. This is brilliant and every bit as good and exciting as anything on Odelay - but has very little of his voice. I think I might like to listen to this again.
Brilliance
This is probably one of my favourite albums. It’s got interesting variation, good vocals, and a lot of bangers. Easy 5/5
I wasn't really familiar with this album so it was a nice surprise. E-Pro and Que' Onda Guero really set the mood. Girl is great too as is Send A Message To Her.
I need to revisit it because I was doing other things, but this is my kind of shit
I love me some Beck. Does not disappoint
I just love Beck and (almost) all his phases. This is one of my favorites.
This is the third Beck album we get and it feels like he hit the sweetspot here between odelay and sea change. Where Odelay felt a little rough and awkward, and Sea change felt overly polished and without character. This hits a nice sweetspot, with a clear feeling and character, a vision but with a nice execution.
I love this album and hold it super closely to my chest, but is this just because it has some of his best songs on it? Girl, E-Pro , Black Tambourine, all brilliant, but this suffers from not being as cohesive as Odelay or Sea Change (which I love) and instead just a splattering of tracks on an album. Still very good though.
So going into this album I was already familiar with the tracks “e-pro” and “girl”. Both of which are great alternative rock songs. But I didn’t realize this album is still Beck firing on all cylinders. I expected this album to be closer to Sea Change (which I hate) but thankfully it’s not. It’s still got a lot of his charm and his cryptic /ironic lyrics. Which feels weird to criticize an artist for trying something different, but at the end of the day I just hate Sea change so much. I think a big part of that is because it’s a huge departure from his “style” which is what I liked to begin with. But speaking exclusively about this album, it’s genuinely one of his best. It’s not mellow gold or odelay. But this album truely is a great runner up to those albums. The other thing I want to say about this album, is in regards to my comment about thinking this album would be closer to Sea change, it kinda feels that way near the end of this album. Cause the only tracks I didn’t care for were the last 3. I gotta say, Beck rarely disappoints like he does with Sea change.
Moins écouté qu’odelay, je l’ai trouvé plutôt agréable à écouter j’y reviendrai
I've listened to some Beck before and liked it, but this was better than I expected. Love the twangy acoustic guitar riffs
Surprised to see this as the Beck album in the list and then more shocked to see he has three. Nothing against him, but yet another case where list choices don't stand up to any kind of scrutiny. Having said all that, it's a pretty good album. A bunch of good tracks and only one or two weaker ones. But still, if this is one if the best albums of the mid-2000s better to look to another decade for an entry
I don't have much to say about Beck. Odelay is a clear 5*. This one is good, just not as good. I would describe it as rich. Just good music that you can sink your teeth into.
Album has good mixing Very creative Good usage of samples Lyrics are a bit lacking I think it's a 4.3/5
This is my second Beck album in the 1001 albums experience. Somewhat more smooth and polished as compared to Odelay, from almost 10 years earlier. I think the polish makes it slightly less interesting as compared to the previous album, but still quite good, and I still enjoyed it.
what a diverse album and every instrument is used well
I really enjoyed this. It was varied and interesting. I do think the rap schtick could use some polishing but that's ever been the case with Beck. Maybe that's the gag.
I feel like Beck should really annoy me, but I tend to like his music no matter how low my expectations are. Don't enjoy the rap songs though
This album was another breath of fresh "Beck"" air when it came out, a bit different than everything else. Groovy, interesting
Surprisingly fun. This is the most fifa album I’ve heard in a while. Stuck between a low 4 or high 3
Beck, Beck, what can I say, he's got the magic, always interesting.
3.5
Though not my favorite Beck album, this one shows the wide array of talents that Beck has. Yes he can write his goofy sound pooping songs but also he can write some great acoustic numbers as well. Heck of a songwriter
Beck - Guero ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This Beck album was new to me, but i bought, Odelay, Midnite Vultures and Sea Changes back in my CD buying days. This was often very reminiscent of Odelay. Not listened to Beck in years and I’d forgot how good he was. This is a cracking album, would’ve given it 5 stars if it weren’t for a couple of 3/5 songs and loads of 4/5 tunes meaning the average was 4.2 ( trying to be a bit more scientific about my scoring!!) Standout track: Broken Drum.
I enjoyed it.
Very enjoyable listen. I began to lose a bit of interest through the middle and the end - that is why 4 stars not 5.
you know, maybe Beck's not so bad.
I like Beck - very enjoyable!
I like it. Weird, strange, fun and not annoying. A difficult balance but they did it!
i liked this a lot more than I expected. "Go It Alone" slaps
I’ve always been a Beck fan, but never listened to this album. Enjoyed it a lot.
3.5 decent maybe i'd listen to it again
Second Beck album I never listened to. This is why I love this list so much. Gets me to listen to music I ignored when it came out. This is such a cool album. It’s even got Petra Haden who I absolutely adore.
Liked it more than expected. Lots of variety and every track was decent.
7.5
Nunca tinha ouvido muito Beck, mas até fiquei fã
Not at all what I was expecting but not bad at all. The music was tasty and none of the lyrics were grating, or annoying and the delivery of it all was slick and professional.
Algunas canciones muy buenas otra no tanto se disfruta la diversidad de géneros que meten en un solo álbum
Solid blend of alt rock and hip hop-adjacent beats make for an overall good listen. Definitely had a stronger first half and starts to lose steam after the midpoint; would be a perfect album with maybe a 10-minute shorter runtime. Top tracks: E-Pro, Girl, Hell Yes
Great
I really enjoyed this - alt-y indie-y dad rock. My street.
Pleasantly surprised. I thought Beck was much more boring, but the songs in this album have a special groove, a kind of trip-hop vibe, I really liked it. Qué onda guero has been in my mind all day.
Very cool and funky!
nunca tinha ouvido nada do Beck, adorei esse estilo rock alternativo, meio hip hop, bem anos 2000, uma influência do começo dos anos 90 também!
Excellent album, really enjoyed it having not listened for years. It's not my favourite of his but it's got loads of bangers
good
This album is pretty cool. Beck has a unique sound to them in my opinion compared to some other rock/metal if that what you can call them. The lead singers voice has a metal sound to it whereas the melody and beat share a metal/rock/alternative sound in my opinion.
This rocks
Yep
Good
despite not being able to listen to track #14 on Spotify, I like this album a good bunch. I haven't much to say about it but its instruments were calming in a sense.
Great album! Super fun. More of a 3.5 for me but whatever
I totally understand why some people might find the tone of this album to be grating. By this time, Beck was just kinda doing stuff, not all of it was groundbreaking or impressive. That all said, this might be my favorite Beck album. It's only got a few low points, but there's plenty to enjoy here if you're into this kinda stupid shit.
Every song was different from the other. I'll look more into this guy
As soon as I heard the intro riff of "E-Pro" (the only song aside from "Girl" I've heard before) I knew I was gonna be in for a good time. Happy to report that the full album did not disappoint -- this flavor of grungy, indie rock/hip-hop hits me right where I live, and feels like it was ripped straight out of Scott Pilgrim (which makes sense since Beck did the ST for that film).
Something you would hear at Sears. 4/5
Cool stoner music
Back to classic Beck
Not sure if this is actually a 4 but I had fun after A LOT of 1s and 2s
Certain level of sauce this one lacka compared to Odelay but I fw it
Pretty groovy… I liked Que’ Onda Guero
Great album. Love how it just starts right away. Minus 1 point for Scientology
Classic Beck is back again; largely due to the return of The Dust Brothers on production, the very same that were in part responsible for Odelay. Guero sounds like a more tempered version of Odelay. The quirky genre-blending is present, the hip-hop grooves mixed with the dusty and fuzzy guitars and psychedelic undertones and his knack for esoteric lyricism is ever present. Though because his writing has been toned down a bit since his sobering Sea Change, the more low-key moments of this record kinda feel a bit hollow or too spacious where I felt like more could be explored but the risks weren't taken. Still, if you're a fan of Beck this album has plenty to offer. Standouts are the groovy "E-Pro", "Girl" and the catchy "Go it Alone".
This is probably my second favorite Beck album. His 90s albums are probably more groundbreaking, but I find myself preferring Girl to Loser most of the time these days.
A very groovy album. Rating: 3.5/5 GEMV (08.05.2026)
Almost a 5 for me but towards the middle and end of the album he lost me
Beck's that dude.
Lesser known greatness from Beck. He continues to crank out work and tours. Somebody I keep an eye on to see how their new work evolves from their 90s peak, like Ben Folds. They could be our generation's Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney.
A well made album with nice genre variety - the production didn't quite click with me so far - it has an unpredictable style I wouldn't quite call satisfying, but it has multiple enjoyable songs, including 'E-Pro' and 'Go It Alone'.
The opening riff of "E-Pro" landed with an immediate and specific reaction — a strong desire to sit at the Hammond and add organ underneath it. That's not a critical observation, it's a musician's instinct, and it's one of the more honest signals a record can send. When a track makes you want to play rather than just listen, it's doing something right. Guero is Beck returning to the playful, genre-hopping, sample-heavy territory of his Odelay era after the quiet vulnerability of Sea Change, and the Dust Brothers production gives the whole thing a physical momentum that keeps the eclecticism feeling grounded rather than scattered. The beats are consistently strong — the foundation that makes the meandering feel like a feature rather than a flaw. A lot of the critical dismissal of this record penalizes it for exactly the quality that makes it work: the willingness to move freely between ideas without apologizing for the transitions. That said, "great but not something that sets a new standard" is the honest assessment. This doesn't rewrite anything or arrive with the kind of inevitability that earns a five. It's a joyful, well-produced, consistently engaging record that rewards attention without demanding it — which is its own legitimate achievement. A genuinely enthusiastic four. Different from the patient, mood-dependent four that Sea Change earned — this one just works.
Beckcellent
I forgot what a great listen Guero is. Solid production we've come to expect from Beck with some great licks and choruses. Catchy as all hell, even the singles that didn't make it to radio. Not a single skippable track front to back.
Not even his best
Great vibes, vocals and rhythm
Felt like gorillaz x harry styles and i was very into it
Really interesting! I loved the different genres this album had
I liked this a lot more than I expected I would.
I've never given Beck a fair listen due to my loathing of "Loser". However, this is just really solid 2000s alt-rock. I was quite impressed. I still hate "Loser".
I don't think this is Beck's best work, but pretty much everything he's done has something interesting and worthwhile about it. I enjoyed Guero well enough and think it's a low to medium four.
Pop rock from the 2000s. Pleasantly surprised, didn't think too much of it when the album was picked for me, but a good one. Favorite track: E-pro other picks: go it alone, farewell ride
Super interesting record. Very eclectic and very upbeat in some parts.
This is the first Beck album I spent a lot of time with, and twenty years later I still really enjoy its eclectic sampling and zany energy. It does get to be a lot of the same by track 12, though.
Much better than I expected. I thought it would be corny and boring but actually had some great musicianship from the first song onwards. Couple lulls but really nice cohesive album
Most successful Beck album.
It's good
Excellent album some of my favorite Beck songs are on this album and many songs are SO GOOD!!!! But fuck farewell ride and also I don't really like hell yes either
Good!
It is solid.
HIGH 4, doesnt stand out too much in the larger beck discography (the dust brothers production is notably restrained compared to odelay or beastie boys’ paul’s boutique) but i have so much nostalgia for all of these songs
One of my favorites from Beck. Solid all around.
Groovy
I quite enjoy Beck.
Guero came after a world class run of albums (Odelay, Mutations, Midnight Vultures, Sea Change) but rather than being on the edge of my seat for what would come next, I was too distracted irl to be able to engage with the new album at all. When I got around to it properly, I discovered Beck with The Dust Brothers was still a winning combination. The backbone is rhythm with track after track delivering a new way to get your feet itchy. Next is a seemingly endless supply of interesting sounds. Tying things together to complete the package are strong melodies, Beck’s confidently hip delivery of intriguing lyrics, and a generally good time feel to brighten your day. The emotionally weighted tour-de-force Sea Change was always going to be hard to follow, but while Guero may not have had the same impact as the upbeat albums he had previously followed more restrained efforts with, it is a worthy addition to an extremely impressive body of work. Also, don’t miss out on Guerolito; remix albums have rarely been as valid.
3.5/5 It's easy to see why this became a late-career highlight for Beck. It feels like an amalgam of all of his previous highs, with the post-modern blues of Mellow Gold and the irreverent pop craft Odelay meeting the downcast mood of Sea Change. A few tracks feel far too slight, like the catchy but forgettable "Hell Yes" and the plodding "Go It Alone". Overall, a solid record, but not one that's really transcended the moment of its release like some of Beck's other work has.
I was already a Beck fan but had never listened to this album all the way through - I loved it! It's the type of album that makes a very cohesive listening experience. Some songs are stronger and more memorable than others, but the other ones are still great and create a great sound and vibe. This album has so much relistinability and it's just a creative and fun take on alt rock. Love it! Top Songs: E-Pro, Girl, Missing, Earthquake Weather, Hell Yes, Rental Car
More Beck is never a bad thing, in my eyes. 4.5 bumped down to 4.
A great album and a return to form for Beck. Two top tracks in E-Pro and girl and an assortment of other joyous offerings. Not quite up to the 90s stuff, but a great listen.
A solid album - with an even better companion album!
Enjoyed. His style is easy to listen to.
Really good energy to this
7/10 That intense guitar in e pro wasn’t what I was expecting off the bat but hell yeah! I like his voice a lot and I knew his song called loser. Hell yes seems to be popular but I don’t like it. The album felt like it got worse towards the end for me but I was a fan of a lot of the sound on here! Favorites: girl, missing, earthquake weather, go it alone
I guess Beck eventually grew out of the garage band tinkering and started making bangers like Rental Car. Youpi!!!
es como HIPHOP PUNK soft dentro de una habitacion sin acustizar
Extremely solid listen! The trip hop and electronic elements definitely helped elevate this for me compared to other 2000s alternative rock.
I have a hard time rating this because it has probably my favorite Beck song (Go It Alone) some others that I’ve heard a bunch (E-Pro, Girl), and other songs I never heard before but I really enjoyed (Black Tambourine really stands out among those). As a whole, absolutely an album I’d listen to again. It also has way too many INCREDIBLY weird songs for me to give it a 5. Like I get it, you’re on your ninth album and just messing around with stuff. But Jesus. Ok, still a 4 I guess.
Lo escuché mientras iba caminando al gym
Weird that it's been over 20 years already since this one came out. I'm still liking it. Bunch of different sounds all in one.
- another cool album cover - oh i really like this - this guy looks like ryan ross - i cannot keep saying “wow this sounds so funky and cool” about all of these but. unfortunately it is true - i really like the vocals i think they work well with the instrumentals - favorite tracks: broken drum, que’ onda guero, e-pro, missing - rating: 4/5
Great album. Super fun listen. And happily listened through it again straight after.
Beck is an artist I always enjoy listening to even if he has never really grabbed me in the feels -- tho "Broken Drum" comes close on this album. He's great at riffs and hooks and beats, and then he adds layers of instrumentation and sound that make every song a while little journey.
For my money, this is his strongest start-to-finish album. Guero has all the crazy pastiche and creative abandon of Odelay minus the schizophrenia, which means there are fewer surprises around every corner, but the album as a whole is more sustainably grooveful (is that a word?) He sounds settled, content, reconciling the creator of Odelay/Midnite Vultures with the creator of Sea Change/Mutations. After living with his catalog for 20+ years, this has landed as maybe my favorite Beck album? Lots of contenders for that title, including his underappreciated late-career Modern Guilt record.
❤️
8/10
A very pleasant surprise - mid career highlight?
Definitely a great album. A good Beck album but I like odelay better. 4/5
Reminded me that I don't mind Beck at all. Will come back to this album
This was an interesting album.
this is honestly peak 4/5
Me gustó
Pure alt, right here Interesting sounds and instrumentation; I should probably give it a second listen
I liked it more than I expected, good sound. Crazy to think it's over 20 years old!
This album started off really strong and none of the songs sounded the same. Except it felt so long despite being less than an hour long. I might have some resentment towards E-Pro, but it does sound good despite that.
wow
Not my favourite Beck album (cue Midnight Vultures” but certainly another solid one!
Great album, loved the changing styles and the production. Awesome listening! E-Pro was my fav song and fav first listen of the album with Go It Alone and Broken Drum as my other highlights
Great album, loved to listen back to Guero
This is a fun album, chill vibes
8/10 Beck is legend
I only knew the hits previously, but I was surprised how much I liked the rest of this album as well. “Broken Drum” was my favorite.
30# Beck has just got the immense style to pull this kinda beats. It's alt rock with beats? say what. How are you mixing drum beats with rock instrumentation and it sounds this good. and it keeps adding interesting instruments or sounds. Very nice listen while vacuuming the house. The production in this is crazy good. Almost every minute I'm hearing a new thing that is really satisfying in the ears, like in the simple track Broken Drums, it could've been just drums and guitar, but no, you're stroke with a whole environment of sounds, wow. There's always something far away happening. The final tracks aren't as powerful as the beginning and middle. Just a thought: Beck has a similar voice to the vocalist from Eels, love them both. Highlights: E-Pro; Girl; Black Tambourine; Broken Drum Skips: Hell Yes; Rental Car
Beck saying "¿Qué put*s?". That's it. That's the note.
This came out when I was in eighth grade and I remember getting it from the library. I loved this album, haven’t listened in years , and I thought it was still really solid today. EPro, Que Onda Guero, and Girl are a great way to open the album. From there it gets mellower with occasional bangers, such as Black Tambourine and Hell Yes. The slower songs aren’t up there with some of Becks others, but still, it’s an enjoyable listen.
kind of surprisingly good, genre bending
I liked it more than Odelay. The beats were more mature and conducive for movement. I felt like I could dance to this album more than others I've heard from him. Overall I liked it, but I know it's not going to be a go-to for me. I would be happy to hear it again.
I know of Beck but never listened too much to him, this was a weird and fun album.
repeat
I love this album, it's so good. It really comes across as a self-imposed challenge by the artist. Where he picked a theme and then wrote on it.
# Album Name: Guero # Artist: Beck # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Good album. Tad too long though which drops the quality a bit. # Top Tunes: Epro / girl / Black Tambourine / hell yes / go it alone / rental car # Would I listen to it again? yes
Damn, 2005 was a great music year. One of Becks best hands down.
Beckin paras levy. Hiphop soundit parantavat.
This was fun, didn't knock me off my feet but I've come to understand Beck as a group that's great at making oddly good strange music
4 Stars I ended up liking this one more as it went on. I'm not sure how often I'll come back to it, but a fun album for sure. Whoever said it falls off after the first half is out of their mind. The album picks up at "Hell Yes" and keeps going from there.
Love when an album surprises me. I had a lot of fun listening to this one. I enjoyed nearly all the songs. 4.5/5
Gillar det!
Kinda rock kinda electronica, i like it. Kinda biased cuz i like Beck
Not absolute top shelf Beck - meanders more than the ones I find either really original or really chill.
Kind of groovy, kind of snoozy
Hey, I had no idea this Beck album existed. A lot of this reminds me of his earlier material - indie with little hip-hop flavored sampled bits. Maybe a little more smoothed out. "Qué Onda Guero" is a little cheesy, but it feels right. This is making me want to listen to actual hip-hop-inflected Mexican music instead, though. "Missing" is atmospheric; I like it a lot. It might be my favorite track on the record? But I also like the song "Farewell Ride," with its interesting cowboyish guitar. The only thing on here that I didn't really take to was "Earthquake Weather," which sounded like some band from the 70s that I can't remember the name of. 4 stars - I'd listen to it again sometime.
Fun mashup of alt. rock and trip-hop influences. Enjoy the bass guitar and all the neat sampling and synth work. 8/10.
Great variety rock, love the production. Favourite track: Que Onda Guero
8/10 Pretty fun album with a variety of sounds and samples. Favorite song is Hell Yes.
A damn good album. I had a good groove throughout the album and listened to it a second time straight away.
4.0
I love the way he's singing. Like very subtle and cool idk it's great.
This is a good listen! Outside of Loser, I never gave Beck much of a chance. My wife likes him and I'd overhear bits now and again, but nothing grabbed me. Over the last few years though, I've become more of a fan. He brings in various styles and experiments a lot, which I appreciate! Why make music if you're just going to do what everyone else has already done? This album walks a great, fine line. Experimental and yet pop-py enough to get on the radio. Heck of a trick! Based on a the first few things I'd heard by him, I didn't think he was much of a singer. But when I hear some of the slower songs, he really does have a nice tone and he's obviously been trained on how to use it. All around good time. I'm going with a 4 on it. It's quite good and listenable. While I do like that he experiments a bit, I don't think he's changed music or influenced too many bands by this.
I didn’t know I liked Beck! This definutely piqued my interest and I love the genre mash, reminds me of Gorillaz. So fun and zany and he has a cool backstory. Songs are memorable. Hard to listen and not smile
I was surprised to like it as much as I did! I'm sure I'll be coming back to it in the future
I really liked this album. Had the classic Beck sound but went beyond in adding in some additional genres. Really liked the flow of the album and would definitely listen again.
really cool beats. 4/5
Somehow, Beck makes this eclectic collection of musical pieces work, infusing each and every new song with a unique identity while keeping his style. You never know what you'll get once a new one kicks in which makes this album refreshing to hear and keeps you on your toes. Unfortunately, the middle section kind of fails this premise. The songs sound very much alike, and the sad folk-style is really not my cup of tea. Towards the end, Beck seemingly becomes inspired again and delivers a scenic finish but this middle chunck really drags down my rating. Best songs are Que' Onda Guero and Farewell Ride. 8/10, would probably skip everything from Missing to Go It Alone (except Hell Yes).
Fantastic!
E-pro - 5 Que onda guero - 4 Girl - 5 Missing - 4 Black tambourine - 4 Earthquake weather - 3 Hell yes - 4 Broken drum - 3 Scarecrow - 4 Go it alone - 4 Farewell ride - 3 Rental car - 3 Emergency exit - 3
I like!
16/20 Un très bel album que j'ai pris plaisir à découvrir et a écouter. De très belles sonorités dont certaines sortent de l'ordinaire. On ne s'ennuie pas à l'écoute.
E-Pro was a lot of fun to play in Rock Band, a popular video game from the ‘00s. This album is still really good. I’m struggling to think of another album with bass lines as strong as this one. Maybe this album doesn’t stick out as much in my memory due to being overshadowed by Odelay.
Really love me some Beck and this is a particularly good one.
Listening Notes Jeff had this playing in his car when we went to a movie, I asked what it was and later he handed me a burn CD of it... rest is history Originally my favorite Beck album and definitely one I know the best, probably still sits in the top 5 Definitely feels like the companion piece to Odelay Standout Tracks "E-Pro", "Girl", "Black Tambourine", "Hell Yes", "Scarecrow", "Farewell Ride", "Rental Car" First time? No Will it go into your rotation? Been in the rotation for 20 years
Not the best Beck but still good
Once I got over the idea that this “recent” Beck album was 20 years old, I really got into it. Beck carries with him a certain something 90s kids love.
Talk about an album that slows WAY down…
Moderate middling quality of the nonsensical attitude avant guarde tracks elevated by pure pop anthems
210/1001 Beck - Guero Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ I only have a passing knowledge of Beck and this is one I'd heard nothing about before. On first listen, this sounds like a bit more of a restrained version of Odelay. It's still a melange of genres done in Beck's inimitable style, which I enjoyed quite a bit.
I enjoy Beck's approach on all albums. He seems to find a common thread and slowly pulls on it - to borrow a phrase from Weezer - 'to destroy the sweater' of the music.
Excellent album, although I may prefer Guerolito more. Gives me flashbacks to highschool, riding in the car with my sister driving me to school. Pretty sure she blew out the bass in one of the Maxima soeakers listening to this. Nostalgia glasses on, it’s a 5. Realistically, it’s a 4.
Another solid 2000s-era Beck album. I liked Sea Change but I think I like this one a bit more. Highlights: "E-Pro," "Girl," maybe "Qué Onda Guero" too, but really it's easy to listen front-to-back.
Coworker music.
My Rating 3.8 Fun, meandering album with styles taken from all over the place.
beck is wel gaaf
Fav: …. Broken drum 4/5
Some very good songs here, and no bad ones. Nice work, Beck.
very good!
Pretty good stuff
This album reminds me of what Beck was doing about 10 years earlier in the 90s. It’s more groove driven, sample heavy, and built around a collage style approach. Something I also found pretty interesting is that Beck teamed up with The Dust Brothers for the production and mastering of this album.
It was a good listen
Pretty good, rocky and funky
Beck's alright, I guess
Love this album, has a different tone and style to the one I know best (Odelay) but unmistakeably Beck
Really interesting eclectic arrangements, I really love the latin influences
Some really good songs
Had stopped listening to Beck by this album, probably a couple before. Ok, starts great. Dulls a little. That 90s/2000s track bloat. Still the best Beck I have heard in a long time. 3.5 rounded up Heard before? No Owned: No: 43/175(24%) Will I get. Maybe
I was a casual fan of Beck at best, of course you couldn't exist in the early 90s and not encounter _Loser_ in the clubs... at least the ones I frequented. So, I have this album and used to listen to it reasonably often. I must admit, I haven't for a long time but listening again now, I probably like this more than I ever did! Beck treats us to a typically cool melange of styles ranging from indie and alt-rock to hip hop beats that wouldn't sound out of place on a **Dre ** album. The production is top notch, with a crisp and sample heavy sound, aided by **The Dust Brothers**.
Easy to listen to, laid back rock and rap, roots and bluesy. Fun
This album, though not great, is still pretty good. The first half, especially, with "E-Pro," "Que Onda Guero," "Girl," and "Missing" is very good. I think "Girl" is one of his best and catchiest songs. But it gets more forgettable as it goes on, with no songs really standing out. It's definitely not "Odelay 2.0" as some have thought of it, it is its own thing and has more of a pop sensibility with the same mashing of genres. I really like it but the songwriting is not to the same level as "Sea Change" or some of his others.
Doesn't rise to the level of Odelay for me, but it's in the next tier of really solid Beck albums.
I liked it, it had a lot of variety which I liekd 13/1/26
Probably not my favorite of his, but still pretty excellent. He plays so many different styles and all of them interesting.
My first time listening to this album, which is odd cause I do like Beck quite a lot and consider Odelay an absolute classic. This started off weak but got increasingly more "Beck" as it went on and therefore catchier, weirder and more interesting. Super solid.
Haven't listened to Beck seriously yet. A very refreshing album, lots of genres melded together in unique and pleasant ways. Really liked this one.
This was really good! I just got Sea Change the other day which I thought was solid. This one has more variety to it though, and overall thought it was more interesting artistically. 4/5
Great album with tons of variety. Beck uses hip hop and electronica in an interesting way that doesn’t detract from the actual musicality of what he’s doing. Like this album a lot. 4
I like Beck. Simpsons: Yes, and Futurama blah blah blah
I enjoy guero! not my fav from beck but it's solid
This had a refreshing variety of genres, all of which were somehow merged while still being coherent in a way.
Solid album, big fan of the variety on here, while Becks voice keeps it all together, vibed hard to this. Already a fan of his after Sea Change, but Guero is a totally different genre comparatively. Fun fact the album artist is from Winnipeg!! Marcel Dzama, now a famous New York artist, started his journey here in the 204, my mom recognized his artwork when I showed her the album. I'd love to start doing more album artworks myself, even just for fun. Maybe just choosing an album I like and designing a new cover.
A bit of a surprise package this one. Hadn't actually properly listened to a Beck album before, I didn't really know what I was in for, but enjoyed most of this!
Listened to some of these songs a lot in my youth, but first time just listening to this album. I really really loved it. There's still some of Beck's experimental avante garde moments that lose me a little but this album largely grooved from front to back. Love his inventiveness and wacky wall of sound.
This challenge has finally introduced me to Beck and I’m so glad. He’s so creative! I like this album — I might love it, but it will take some time to be accustomed to the pop-rap. For now, it’s a 4; looking forward to another listen!
Great album.
I love it when the album starts and you are immediately launched into dance mode. E-Pro is a fantastic starter. The one thing I hate about this awesome album is the fake finger-snap\claps that sound squishy and processed and run an unwelcome finger up my spine, this is especially noticeable in Earthquake Weather.
Baustelle, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Feines Album.
Super cool vibe, I need to listen to the last 3 songs still though.
Excelente gravação!
easy to listen to. mighta gone a little too hard on the back-to-back Beck listening on this day and overstayed my welcome, but I very much enjoyed this one! What an artistic weirdo.
3.5
No tästä vois aatella, että mielipiteeni olisi "hyvä mies, tämähän on paskaa!". Vuan siitä ei oo kyse. Kyllä meinaan tykkään. Joku biisi näistä olkin tuttu vaikka ite levyä ei oo tullut ehkä kuunneltua aiemmin (ainakaan paljoo). Tää on ehkä semmonen seesteisempi jatko-osa oodeleille (oottakaa vaan niin se viel pärähtää kuunteleen) (tänään on päivä kun kaikki pistetään sulkeisiin). Eli joo. Tää on varmaan niinkun kolome tähtee oikeesti, mutta kun on omaan mieleen koko artisti ja meno ja tää levy niin sitten se on nelkkis. Että semmottiis.
Not as good as “Odelay” or “Mellow Gold”, but better than “Midnight Vultures”.
Really enjoyed this album, never heard any of his others but will check them out now
Super solid record, very consistently good throughout
It’s been a minute since I’ve listened to Beck, I almost forgot he used to make interesting music.
Loved E-pro. And que onda gusto’s an earworm. Got a bit slower the rest of the album tho
E-Pro - 8 Love the funky and catchy beat this one has with the guitar that really opens up in the chorus. Kind of a simple chorus, but it serves as a place for the guitar to shine. In his bio, it says that Beck grew up as a Scientologist and the E-Pro title was meant to be a play on some Scientologist thing, I can see the bridge having Beck take an overall message of good (“I wont give up that ghost”) but also calling out how fucked up the way he grew up must’ve been (“It’s sick the way these tongues are twisted) Que’ Onde Guero - 7 Knowing what we know about Beck, that he grew up pretty poor as a Latin immigrant in LA, this song tells a story of that upbringing. Beck is also a white man, so “Que’ Onda Guero” meaning “What’s up white boy/blondie” and takes us through the cities where he grew up. He talks of the atmosphere, the people he would interact with, and reinforces this kind of “grunge-y, dirty city vibe”. Idk how often I would go to this for a relisten, but it was catchy and I liked how immersive it felt. It was like if I was walking down the streets in these cities. Girl - 6.5 A girl who is kind of full of contradictions. It seems like Beck loves her but also writes about her with this hint of evil. I think this song is about a girl who Beck sees as someone who is from the same living situation as him and he wants better for her, almost seeing wasted potential. Is he mad at her for that and that’s where some violence in this song comes from? This one was kind of confusing to listen to and make sense of, plus the heavily contested “sun-eyed girl” vs “cyanide girl” gives this song intrigue. I like it though, it was catchy and was had a lighter quality than I thought I would be hearing from this album. Missing - 7 He’s praying to forget someone or some feeling (mental illness?) in this song and saying they’ve already taken so much from what little he has to give. He describes almost a revolving door of things that remind him of this person/feeling. Funky flow in the bridgeeeee love. Really not what I was expecting from this song. I like it. Black Tambourine - 7.5 This song immediately opens up to imagery about a break-up of some sort. I also read it as a public break up (We sing a song that was hated) but feeling like something is wrong after seperating from this person that it’s causing pain that takes a fire and hurricanes among other acts of God to clear. He’s sad and broken up, but keeps playing his music and rtucking on (re: playing a black tamborine). Verse 2 suggests she may have taken advantage of him being from a similar situation as him. He also uses music to cope with his situation and it is something that never leaves him (“We’ll shake and rattle our bodies to keep warm at night, my tamborine is still shaking”). YES GUITAR. The last verse being verse 1 repeated shows the cyclical nature of his life. Yes he’s in heartbreak, but he has to keep trucking along. Earthquake Weather - 7 Falsetto in the chorus?? Go off. Also a little funky synth at the end here? Love. This one is also kind of confusing to review. I think it’s just him singing about how uncertain he is with his life. Maybe the earthquake of it all signifies a change on the horizon that could be good or bad, but for now he is working and plugging along his days with this uncertainty in his mind. Hell Yes - 7.3 This one is so hip-hoppy. This seems like a commentary on writing entertainment in America. He feels like he’s reached commercial success and now some of the accolades mean nothing, everyone is power-drunk or real drunk/high around him, and he’s noticing a conformity crisis around him where things are sounding the same to fit a “successful formula” The chorus here is reminding us that he is always going to be changing and to just sit with what he puts out as an artist. Broken Drum - 5.5 Guitar immediately grabs your attentnion. This seems to be a memorial song. Not too much to pick apart abt this one. It’s very sweet, he’s telling his late friend that he could see his struggle with mental health (maybe depression) and tells him not to worry about what he’s leaving behind. If that’s what he has to do, they will carry on remembering him. Scarecrow - 7 Seems like he’s going back and forth between some kind of plagueing thoughts. But he also acknowloges that he has some autonomy over this. The scarecrow’s only scaring himself could mean that overcompensating for these thoughts rather than acceptance and moving on is only making things worse for him. Go It Alone - 7.5 Jack White writing/instrumental feature is crazy damn. The character Beck is writing about here is coming to terms with the fact that he thought he’d always end up alone, but is them about to propose to somebody. I think he is battling with the fact that he is no longer “going it alone” like he maybe always imagined he would and is burning that life up to start a new one. Idk. This one was also kind of confusing to me to pick apart. It’s very gravelly in almost a bluesy way and White’s bass line in the chorus is catchy as hell. Farewell Ride - 5 This one is just outlining the nature of an all-consuming addition (to coke) and how that addicition will more than likely lead the narrator to an early grave. I like the stompy rock nature of this, but it’s a little repetitive for my taste. Rental Car - 6.5 (maybe 7) Yess guitar again. I like the idea of taking something as far as a rental car will let you. It’s like he knows it’s got to end at some point, but he’s enjoying the ride for as long as he can. Emergency Exit - Last song already??? Crazy. I think this song is about not giving up on something when it may not be successful. The first verse outlines not pawning off his watch and chain to the landlord in his head, so he’s not calling it quits justtt yet. Verse 2 seems to be him working hard and he take anything else with him when he goes, so he may as well take advantage of the oppurtunities he’s got. Maybe the outro is calling to not become jaded and stay curious to what you want to do. Overall - 7.5 I think this has been my favorite album so far. I love how catchy the songs are and how unique of a perspective Beck comes to the table with. I loved the hip-hop inclusions as well as the pure rock and grunge feel like comes with these tracks. I also like his inclusions working with a DJ during production, you can hear their work in those synths and more electronic sounds. I think there was a stompy quality that had be nodding my head along with most of the songs. I do think a couple of the songs didn’t land for me and the front half of this album is what really shines for this project. The opening track was my favorite followed by: black tambourine, hell yes, go it alone, and girl. My least favorites were probably farewell ride and broken drum. I already want to listen to more of Beck and to this album again, it has fully intrigued me.
Totalny miss masz, potrzebuję przesłuchać sobie ten album jeszcze raz. Ale fajnie się go słuchało ✌🏻
Grown up Beck is better than I remember it to be. Not as quirky as Odelay or Midnight Vultures but a really interesting well constructed album nonetheless. Dude is good at what he does…
I rock with this. It’s got a nice eclectic feel.
Liking this a lot more than Odelay.
This is great. First 3 songs are up with any of Beck’s best. Slight drop in quality after that but still very good. Closing song ‘Send A Message To Her’ is also a banger. The sound of Beck having enough runs on the board that he can do basically whatever he wants
Beck was all over the place this album. What is worse, it’s good and many of the songs are catchy. However, there’s a disjointed sensation throughout. Beck uses electronic, hip hop, Latin, and alternative. I wasn’t upset because much of this album was enjoyable, but Beck sure tried to shove every genre into Guero. Guero was my third Beck album, and I’m impressed at how much of a chameleon he is. He has his unique style, but his albums sound different even from each other. Unlike many artists on this list with multiple albums, Beck always presents an unexpected listen.
I grew up in an area heavily populated by Mexican Americans as well, and so Beck's musical quest to merge his alternative style with the Chicano sounds that he had become accustomed to really resonated with me. I was able to pick out a lot of sounds, stylings, and even words (including "guero", definitely been called that one a few times) that sounded familiar. It seems some comparisons are drawn between this album and "Odelay!", both in terms of sound and the production involved, so I felt obligated to mention that this album definitely was more of a hit for me than "Odelay!". This album did cause a slight eyebrow raise with the "alternative hip-hop" genre in the description, but I ended up digging that a fair bit, too -- very Gorillaz in vibe. All in all, this was about a 3.5 for me. Surprising even myself, I'm actually going to round this up. It just really vibed with me!
Guzeldi begendim bunu
Liked it
Next to Mutations this has to be one of my favorites. I really don't have many notes other than it's a good album.
Will defo listen again; lots of interesting parts at play
very fun and chill album i like it
This is my second Beck album. I'd rated the first one a 4, and I think this is a similarly solid album.
I am a big fan of Beck and his track "Loser" is one of my favorites of all time. I did enjoy this album but some tracks did feel a bit stale compared to the other ones. If it would have been more trimmed down, I would have given this a perfect 5 but I will give this a 4. I definitely will listen to more Beck albums regardless if they appear in this list or not.
Good stuff
Album sounded really good. Tracks all varied with lots of rhythm. Lyrics were interesting, quite dark in some songs. Intend to explore Beck's catalog more.
Might be mistaken but it sounds like TØP to my ears but with a more country-folk-rock vibe and a chill vocal delivery. Starts off strong but falters after "Earthquake Weather" (3.5-4)
Spoko…🙃
The album starts awkwardly restrained but shines later on. My favourite tracks here would be 'Go It Alone' & 'Rental Car'. The record is really diverse, and as you approach the last part, you already know it's worth relistening later. To me, it was unusual and truly delivering with some of its tracks. Nice one.
Heard some great new sounds, kinda reminds me of slightly stoopid
Lots of different sounds and genres in here which is interesting. Broken drum was my favorite.
Beck is iconic for creating, innovating and keeping it fresh for 30 years. RRHOF lock. His live shows never disappoint. Odelay is full of bangers and is one if my all-time favs. More please.
Pretty good. Unique. Beck is Beck.
It’s fun to occasionally check in on Beck and see what weird stuff he’s up to now
It’s not top tier Beck, but it’s pretty close. A great grab bag of styles and moods.
Couple good ones here. Black Tambourine especially.
Great Hooks and Grooves
Unsure Beck has a bad album
Much better album than I remembered.
Not my cup of tea but i clearly see that some pepole would enyoj it
Not my first choice for Beck albums, but a good time nonetheless.
4.5
4.3/5 tamer odelay cool album
good on the strength of E-Pro and Girl Go It Alone and Farewell Ride are good too
Lots of hits
I'll be honest, I only know Beck for his song "Loser" so I had zero expectations coming into this album. I came away really liking it! Its a fun eclectic mix of styles and sounds that kept my interest the entire time and on a Monday after a holiday break I couldn't really ask for anything more.
I never really got into Beck growing up even though he was huge, but this album was honestly pretty cool. The whole southwestern vibe caught me off guard in a good way, and it gave the record an edge that I didn’t expect from what little I know about him. I’ve been getting a lot of albums lately that use slide guitar or dobro, and I am fully here for it. Beck really nailed the slide parts on this one. It added this dusty, desert feel that made the songs way more interesting. Favorite song: Farewell Ride
Fabulous album of pop/r and b. Quincy Jones is a genius producer and it shows on this album. Song composition is up and down - this isn’t Thriller. But the high points are super high.
Far out
Amazing, chill early 2000s - laid back nostalgia
I really liked this - the songs were interesting and very good, although very much in the vein of what I would expect from a Beck album. It was enjoyable to listen to while I was working and some songs (Rental Car in particular) really grabbed my attention. I would happily put this on again in the background for something interesting to listen to.
While I do really like this album, it's mostly due to nostalgia. In a vacuum it's hard to justify this selection for the 1001.
I'm biased. I enjoyed Odelay when it came out, and after Midnite Vultures, I was surprised to see what I saw as a return to that album's form. It's different, and I enjoy it
Excellent work, love this one.
Love Beck, this is my favourite flavour of Beck. 4.5
Fun! I've never LOVED Beck, but he's a great musician I always like listening to.
The beats on this are great, never heard this album before cause I never really cared for Beck but this was pretty decent. 4/5
Lots of catchy songs; I underrated this when it came out. Still though, I’m not sure if it’s a “need to hear before you die” type of thing.
Surprised by how much I enjoyed it. 4/5
Spannend, neu für mich.
Every song sounds like it’s from a different album, and somehow it’s still all great
Very comfortable listening.
Not my fave Beck album but still really solid. It's not quite a 4 star for me but it deserves more than 3
I already had Sea Change on this list and I prefer this version of Beck to the more melancholy one. At his best he seamlessly meshes styles into a cohesive whole. This album starts with a great single in E-Pro which is more of a rock song, and I liked the more hip-hop style grooves of Qué Onda Guero. The tribute to Elliot Smith Broken Drum is another highlight. Think this is a 4 rather than a 5 though, I will save the top marks for Odelay :)
A very fun album. Lots of energy throughout, plenty of variety. I had a hard time taking some parts of the album seriously but I don't get the impression Beck really intends me to. It's always a little disappointing for me when the first track is the best, you spend the rest of the album waiting for something else as good as E-Pro to pop up. Oh well.
Nice one.
Enjoyed this. First three tracks had me thinking I was going to give this 5 stars, but it failed to reach those heights again. Still a good listen.

Album 949 of 1089 Beck - Guero (2005) Rating : 3.75 / 5 One thing you can always count on with Beck is consistency - most everything he puts out is at least solid, and this one goes a bit beyond that. It’s a good album that delivers exactly what we’ve come to expect from him: smart production, creative beats, quirky lyrics, and a style that somehow ties it all together without ever feeling forced. Beck has this ability to blend genres and sounds in a way that feels effortless - a little funk, a little rock, a little hip-hop, and just enough weirdness to make it interesting. He’s one of those artists who might not have a long list of “big hits” that come immediately to mind, but he never disappoints. His work is always uniquely his own, and Guero fits right in with that tradition. It’s inventive, fun, and full of personality - exactly what you’d want from a Beck album.
This album is like the first mid semester break in your first year at uni. You’ve moved out of home and you’re living in a city away from your parents, which has given you the freedom to be yourself and express yourself, without Mum and Dad judging you and trying to steer you in a particular direction. After a couple of months, you’ve found a group of friends at uni that you really vibe with. The weather is pretty nice and your friend “The Guzmo” (called so because he can guzmo than you) has a car. You, The Guzmo, and two other friends pile in to the clapped out Toyota Camry and road trip towards Christchurch.
