Reviews (page 7 of 12)

could ve been 4 nothing stands out really overall a decent album imo

This was fine. I never knew that first track was called E-pro, I remember hearing that a lot on the radio.

it was okay

there are songs here that sound like every other Beck song from this time. And there are some that sound a bit unconventional and then Beck starts singing, This means, that if you like Beck, you will love this. If you hate him, you will have a bad time. In my case, sadly, and despite his musicianship, i have a hard time finding something that i like from Beck. Is so alien to me, that i feel indifferent to his music, and keep forgetting him. It's not bad his music. Only forgettable to me.

A weird, varied album. From trippy alternative rock to pop/hip hop, Guero is all over the place. Not unenjoyable, but probably wouldn't come back to listen to this again

Lowkey good

Stress inducing

This is kind of a vibe, I had this album in high school and kind of forgot about it but I enjoyed on this re-listen

Aside from the inescapable Odelay, I have never really explored much Beck. This was better than expected and well worth a proper listen. Still not sure it’s one I would return to, but time will tell…

Much like a lot of Beck's albums, there are moments of real brilliance, but the rest of just doesn't chime with me as much as I hope and expect. I remember when this came out, and E-Pro was such an amazing track (and it still is) but I didn't take to the rest of the album. Today, I like it more than I did back then, and hopefully not as much as I will in another twenty years.

Not my genre

Interesting Pop, Latin style of rock. Not my cup of tea but it is artistic

I've never got Beck. Either I'm an idiot, or it's a massive prank on me, but there seems to be a lot of people out there picking up on something indistinguishable to me. Live and let live, but I can only give this a 3 in the hopes that maybe someday it'll all come clear.

I've never been a big fan of Britpop, but I think this album is ok

This album, off the bat, is more akin to what I normally listen to. Started off very strong and catchy, and I'm always one to be pleased when an album flows well and the songs bleed into one another as you listen. Many of the songs are very much inspired by funk, which I enjoy. Would I say this is the greatest album I've ever listened to? No. Does it inspire me to listen to more Beck? Also no. But at least it wasn't a slog to sit through.

Yeah i don't know what to think about this one. For one, I'm angry for 3 Beck inclusions, but then again, after listening to the whole album, this isn't so baad. Like a mid 3. Probably not gonna listen to it again, but there were some pretty good tracks on here.

Not my favorite Beck, but still pretty good.

pretty good like - e pro, girl

Beck has such interesting music

Started off strong with the first 2 tracks. Guero in particular was energetic and fun. But the rest of the album kind of wandered around and felt more sterile.

Beck’s an acquired taste.

Nothing special but listenable.

Over the first ten years of his career, Beck tried his hand at everything. He made albums in the styles of country, lo-fi folk, funk, and even chamber pop, but on Guero, he returned to what made him famous: a mixture of all of the above. And the album itself is decent, but somehow awkwardly disjointed. The upbeat opener, based on a sample from the Beastie Boys' "So What'cha Want," and the rhythmic toms of "Black Tambourine," are mixed with strange hip-hop about vegetable men in a vegetable van and country riffs played so poorly they could only have been done on purpose. It might seem like the artist simply doesn't know what he wants — the record is as resourceful as it is tedious and hokey. Another thing is that, most likely, this is exactly what Beck wanted when he decided to release one more album as if it were assembled piece by piece, among which there are both gems and trash.

When to listen: Reading "my year of rest and relaxation." Not because this is restful or relaxing, the book isn't—it's just that funk, that rut, that sinking feeling. I enjoyed the music but have a feeling there's better Beck to come.

I like Beck. Overall it was a good listening experience, in particular I liked Missing as it’s reminiscent of beachy hazy guitars and vocals with strings often seen in Brazilian jazz

Decent album

not a huge fan of alt rock tbh

It's a great beck record, but not my fav. He tries a few different things here, some are good, some not so much

it was good! I really liked the front half of this album (by which, I mean, like, the first four songs). The last half dragged a little. 'Hell Yes' was reaaaalllly not my thing. Rental Car was great, Que' Onda Guero is probably spelled all the way wrong. Girl was good too! Prob not gonna revisit this one. But it's nice to know who Beck is, now!

Basically just more of Beck doing Beck things.

The Latino vibe just doesn’t really hit home for me. Which leaves you with just kind of OK Beck.

3.5, felt a bit all over the place at times but i thought it started off really strong, maybe this is just a grower.

Far from my favorite Beck album, but there's some good stuff on it and the production is often fun. I do think it sort of sounds like car commercials now, which isn't its fault.

It's odd. Lacking direction or conviction. None of it awful, just a bit jarring in terms of direction changes. Nothing stands out when it's all different.

Not bad, sounds like everything else though

Kolejny album raczej nie w moim guście. Przyjemny, ale nic poza tym. Raczej nie przesłucham ponownie.

Decent 3,5

Weird but fun album! It scratches a similar itch to Gorillaz' Self-Titled, and similarly has a wide variety of juicy instrumentals to dig into. I could see it growing on me with a few listens, but I'm not 100% sold right away. Standouts: Que' Onda Guero • Black Tambourine • Earthquake Weather • Rental Car • Emergency Exit

Shit....is this good? First listen had me extremely unimpressed and I didn't even want to listen again. However. Putting on my headphones made me pick up on all the low end I missed. Could become a repeat listen.

Almost funky, but so boring!!

No complaints, but nothing really stuck with me.

Beck makes good beats and flows over them well. The Latin vibe puts a nice touch of variety in the mix, though maybe there's some cultural appropriation going on there. Not something I feel the need to listen to often, but if it were playing, I wouldn't ask anyone to change the station.

It was a fine album. no songs stuck out to me, but none of them were bad by any means. just kinda meh

Beck is just fun.

Sure, this is an enjoyable listen and Beck and the dust brothers combine always for a interesting record. However, it just doesn't seem like it breaks any new ground for either these artists. It's just a collection of solid Beck songs, and it represents his style very admirably

This is the first Beck I've gotten on the list and I'm surprised as to why it was on here. I don't think people would place it up there with Odelay or Sea Change, and my personal favorite (the Prince inspired Midnite Vultures) isn't even on the list. The tunes are pretty good but this isn't exactly groundbreaking.

It’s kind of a soup of genres but it works decently enough? The music definitely sounds good, with E-Pro and Earthquake Weather being the standouts for me. Variety is excellent, where the genre, tempo, and potentially language changes every track. I do think for how dynamic the music is it just isn’t that interesting to me unfortunately. The vocals are just kind of there and a few songs left absolutely zero impression on me. Nothing egregiously bad in this one, but I just don’t think there’s a lot that’s giving me a reason to listen to this one again. That’s a lot better than the other 2000s albums this list has given us at least

Man I love E-Pro. I remember playing it basically on loop in Rockband 2 and my siblings getting increasingly annoyed with me and the song. Besides that this I just anotber case of this artist has made better releases”. My biggest problem with this album really is that I’d just rather listen to the other two. Guero sounds like an attempt to recapture the lightning in a bottle that made Odelay, which never goes well. Guero is like a calculated, formulaic recreation of Odelay. It’s attempts to recreate odelay are mostly the weakest parts of the album, and make up its bulk. Odelay was interesting because of all the genres it mashed together. It really was the creation of a fan of several genres that had the ability to blend them together and make something new, and something like that can't be recreated perfectly on purpose. Ultimately this is a good, listenable album. The songs where he tries something new and upbeat are very good and clearly he still had some tricks up his sleeve. I just don't think it's Beck's best, and I can't listen to it without thinking of his best. Did I need to hear this before I die? I could live without it.

An enticing collection of tracks that really shine at their most experimental. Their really isn't a cohesive thematic thread, but the hot, sunny and frequently dusty Californian air frequently filters through the music. The quality sags in the second half but the first two songs are really wonderful and thoughtfully textured.

while im not a fan of Beck this wasn't too bad. 3.5/5

I think I might like Beck…

I thought this album was alright, it has a great instrumental pallete and there's bits and pieces of songs that would enter into my listening activity but other than that it drags a lot and at some points it feels like its doing too much. I loved the mixture of Hip Hop, Folk, Rock, Bossa Nova and Jazz elements too and the usage of Synths. Sometimes the way the vocals were delivered felt so draining and made me want to skip certain songs. I feel like if the track-list was shortened and more thought was put into making sure this body of work lyrically matched the diverse instrumentals It would have come out as a better album. I would love an instrumental release for this album and will be sure to look into it if there is one. Final Score: 6/10 Fav Tracks: Girl, Missing

Great sampling and the songs are well-constructed.

I’ve never been a Beck fan and I’m still not but this album makes me understand some of the hype

I get the creative talent of Beck but I just don’t get it. This one had no hits that knew of. It was pretty boring to me, people apparently like him. To each their own. Three stars.

Couple good tracks

Had low expectations going in, but was actually pleasantly surprised. A really cool, unique record. The sound feels like mix of 90s style grunge with a modern twist. Not my favorite ever, but a good record.

Well, this album is at parts interesting at parts so bland and boring. Some songs are nice, but others are more of the same that has been listened before but on repeat. And the sound is so monotonous that it feels like the album doesn't flow at all. So, it's sometimes good, sometimes bad, to be honest. Did I like this? Not much. It's a pretty average album with some nicer tracks.

Not his finest work

before listening: I vaguely know of this artist, never listened to anything in full. I think he has a song with Cage the Elephant? Anyway, hopefully it's good, still in the bad mood I mentioned in my last notes 1. E-Pro - This is fine, i'm not amazed by it, but don't hate it 2. Que' Onda Guero - eh. I like the chaotic, lifelike vibe of it, but it's not one I can see myself just listening to 3. Girl - I actually like this one a lot 4. Missing - meh, this one is fine 5. Black Tambourine - This one is okay, could grow on me 6. Earthquake Weather - Oooh, I really like this one! 7. Hell Yes - eh, no thank you 8. Broken Drum - I really like this one 9. Scarecrow - this one is fine 10. Go It Alone - this one is also fine 11. Farewell Ride - eh, not my vibe 12. Rental Car - this one is fine 13. Emergency Exit - Again, this one is fine So, overall the album is just fine. I probably won't come back to it as a whole, but there are a few songs I won't mind revisiting

Replay yes

Decent

I’m pretty sure the second song was racist. Kinda like Cake but different

Pretty good

Never mind when Beck is on, but I never reach for it

A grand album but eminently forgettable, nothing so good or so bad that makes it particularly memorable. Somewhat odd inclusion on this list I feel. 3 out of 5 stars.

Thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. Probably not the most influential, experimental, or critically acclaimed Beck album, but still good and worth seeking out from time to time. 3+

Un mot : éclectique

First time I’ve listened to a Beck album in full. For me there are no major highs and no major lows. There’s some nice production but nothing really grabs me. Not something I feel like I need to listen to again.

This is the first time I'm listening to this Beck album start-to-finish. I'm more familiar with some of his other albums. In the track "Missing," I thought that it was Chris Cornell doing a guest vocal. Gotta hand it to Beck for doing a pretty solid impersonation there. Ultimately, I don't dislike this, but I prefer Odelay.

E-Pro - Cool music video, catchy, fun instrumentals, weird ending Que Onda, Guero - Great vibes, I love a Spanglish song, super boppy Girl - Once again very interesting. Fun vibes Missing - Oooooh I really like this one, so pretty Black Tambourine - Once again cool music video, fun vibes Earthquake Weather - Really cool instrumentals Hell Yes - Interesting Broken Drum - Pretty and cool instrumentals Scarecrow - I really like this one Go It Alone - Catchy and boppy Farewell Ride - Loving these instrumentals Rental Car - Cool intro Emergency Exit - Pretty instrumentals, cool message Overall, solid album without much for me. It's good but this is literally a list of good albums. I also wish there was more Spanish. This doesn't give me anything special and although it's clearly well-crafted and I'm sure it is for someone, I can't say it's one of my favorite things I've listened to.

Album Review 078 Guero by Beck (2005) Rating 3.5/5 Beck’s best album; Guero is consistently strong and has plenty of different styles but at almost an hour long, this a long album and I’d expect only his biggest fans will regularly re-listen all the way through.

Beck has a mix of sounds here. He tends to swing between college party sound and more introspective. There's a few good vibes, but overall I think he has a stronger album.

Really nice variety of instruments / genres, rock, blues/country, electronic Some songs had repetitive lyrics and lacked meaning (Hell yes, my girl) Overall, enjoying the instrumentals a lot, not so much for lyrical/vocal aspects but I did quite enjoy some songs like Farewell Ride, E Pro

AGGRESSIVE FUZZ immediately to kick off Guero. Immediately intrigued. SUDDEN stop to give way to jungle drums and staccatoed rhythmic vocals. Really fuzzy bass line kicks right back in. This is an entertaining start. Gives me high high hopes for this album. Wow this track almost feels Gorrilaz-esque. Love the synth/brass sounding instrument that I can’t figure out in the background. Really repetitive rhythmic drumbeat really makes your head bob. Horrific sounding synth to start off Girl. This track feels like a bit of a change in tone to the previous two. Funky slide guitar solo in this feels novel. I like it. Some sort of smooth jazz feel brought in with Missing. Maybe jazz isn’t the right term… almost something Cuban? I’m getting serious Havana vibes from this one for some reason. Black Tambourine again carries on the real jazzy feel with the drumbeat. Earthquake Weather instantly made me think of NWA with that intro. Much more earthy sounding bass. Weird effects on it give this track a bit of an alien feel. Plenty of phaser being used here. Hell Yes starts with an interesting timing. I really like this. Previous track had me dip out a little but this one woke me up a good bit. Rhythmic repetition and almost rapping definitely makes this one of the most interesting tracks in the record. Real slowdown with Broken Drum. I love the harsh sliding progression in the verse riff. Almost dreamy xylophone effects. Scarecrow and Go It Alone blended together a bit. Both good tracks. Serious twang brought into Farewell Ride. Such a western influence to this one. Love the fuzz of the main riff in Rental Car. Miss it a little when it drops out for the vocals. Comes back again to back up an understated guitar solo. Something almost nu-metal about the second guitar solo. Crazy vocal interlude afterwards, circus-like. But ties in really well with that fuzzy riff eventually. Dark and brooding slowdown towards the end of the album with Emergency Exit. Real desert feel to this track. Send a Message To Her doesn’t really feel like an outro track. It’s decent, but there’s nothing special. It does have a nice instrumental bridge towards the end which I like. All sound a fairly decent album, 3 out of 5 for me. E-Pro knocks the other tracks out of the park. Worthwhile listen.

Solid album with lots of sonic complexity. Love the driving opening song E-pro, and Qué onda güero Is a great snapshot of life in east LA. If the whole album built more off those first 2 songs I feel it would be much stronger. Instead the middle kind of drifts into some good but not great poppy Beck-style songs. E-pro and Qué onda güero are so good that they almost overshadow the rest of the album. There is a kind of a dark bluesy sound in the last third of the album that I like but it doesn’t synch well with the beginning. Overall Odelay is much better.

230226 16:09 3

Not sure what I was expecting. Its uhm interesting.. Little weird or ig surreal. Ahm.

Found lyrics, other than incesent nah nahs, of E-Pro almost imcomprehensible. Top tracksfor me are Girl and Black Tambourine. Overall album is listenable but not one I would seek out.

Not quite on the same level as some of this other stuff but still an enjoyable album.

Beck was a head of his time, album holds up 20 yrs later. He drips steez

It was fine, nothing stuck out to me. Was fine having it on in the background, but nothing I'd go back for.

Some White Stripes/Jack White vibes in the earlier songs. Ok but maybe a bit too prog rock vibes for my taste

Let me start out by saying that before listening to this album, I was unfamiliar with Beck. I'd listened to "Loser" and that was a guilty pleasure song for me for a while, but who doesn't know that song. Anyways, I had no idea that Beck is actually just one guy. That's crazy, and he's insanely talented. That said, I don't think this album is for me. In my opinion, the first half is pretty solid, and I was pleasantly surprised at what all Beck can do, but I didn't get much of that by the end. Everything become homogeneous. The track that stood out to me the most was "Earthquake Weather." If earthquakes were a weather event, I think this song conjures up what it would look like outside before an earthquake.

This is a funny one. It’s a good solid album; musically very rich and sonically interesting, but I’m not sure why it’s on the list (this is a sentence I seem to be writing far too often). Beck is a bit of an unknown quantity to me; I don’t know anything about him as a person, and I don’t get the sense of a particular persona from this. It’s not a classic, or one that recommend or stand up for in an argument, but it is rather affable. Ultimately, I like this album but I’m not sure why.

Just meh. Beck has many better albums than this.

Started strong but petered out near the end. 3.5

Hadn't listened to this before. Didn't quite give it the attention it deserved but it sounded good back there. Never got super into Beck but always respected that he was making fun and innovative music. I will save this to my library and come back to it.

Beck has never done much for me, but this was a pleasing enough way to spend an hour. All of the songs have that pastiche that Beck has made his signature, and I liked opener "E-Pro" the best. None of it feels especially deep or substantive, but I don't think that's the point, either.

enjoyable listen

Good vibe but not my style

Good, but compared to odelay, definitely the lesser. Fun listen but nothing exceptional

Basically exactly what I expected. This is (somewhat better than) fine.

Surprisingly melodic in the mix of an eclectic production. It certainly has a style, although rough along the edges.

Yeah this was okay. Liked more songs than I was expecting to. Fave tracks: E-Pro, earthquake weather, broken drum. Would I revisit this: except for the specific tracks I liked, nope.

There are echoes of perhaps Beck's best album (Odelay) on this, but among the killers there are few fillers also. Maybe 3/5 is not quite enough, but 4/5 would be bit too much...

I've always had problems with Beck, mostly due to the excessive "art music" vibe I'm getting, whether it's there or not. I'll try and keep an open mind, but when wikipedia says "...it is ARTISTS highest-charting album and had sold over MASSIVE NUMBER..." and it's none of the artists records that are already on my radar in one way or another, I get suspicious. I had couple of moments where I felt like skipping rest of the tracks and moving on, but for the most part it was fine, I guess. His vocal style tends to get on my nerves, but not as bad as I was anticipating. Few good tracks jumped out, rest was just part of the album, so to speak.

Alternative rock, alternative hip hop, sampledelia.

liked it parent music

I prefer Odelay, but this is pretty good.

Best Track - "E-Pro"

Originally want to give a 4 but lost dynamic in the second half. 3/5

Boppy folk music with great beats and solid variety. Not the absolute best from Beck, but still a very fun listening album.

One of Becks best but still not spectacular

The beats are good, the vocals border on mediocre and lazy.

Favorite track(s): E-Pro, Missing, Black Tambourine

No track really stood out to me but I have heard and enjoyed emergency exit before

Being honest, this was my first time hearing Beck. As a Brazilian and huge MPB fan, I was surprised and impressed by "Missing." I could immediately tell by the instrumental, it's my personal favorite on this work, alongside Broken Drum. That one hit me, the longing and sadness mixed with the rage of the guitar is absolutely perfect. Scarecrowcould easily be part of a soundtrack. It reminds me of those intense moments when a character is on rush. The same goes for Go It Alone (you can really feel Jack White's contribution here). The sound is quite dirty, but it matches the general idea of the album. In general,it's a decent album, but I might say it's not for every mood or taste. I can see myself revisiting it in the right moment. I felt more connected to the production and atmosphere than to the lyrics themselves. Not my favorite, but not bad at all.

i appreciated his interesting choice of "digital" sounds, especially given the new internet era of music this album sorta came out around

3 - iconic beginning. I've never really given Beck enough credit for being so emblematic. Every song sounds like a great piece for a movie. Crazy to hear the influence they've had on later bands and also to recognize such a broad range of influence they've used on this album.

a little samey, great guitar work

Although not as adventurous as Odelay, this is a welcome comeback to his earlier sound after some melancholic albums like Sea Change. It's not bad - it's not brilliant either. I do like eclectic albums, however, and Beck never lets me down on this front. 3/5

fifa -ish

Idk bro, some good country, some just weird af

Well, I know the first track, so that's something. However, I just feel like I'm watching an Apple commercial or something because of the saturation those commercials had. I don't think I get Beck.

Never really got the fascination for Beck. It's fine I guess.

I prefer other records by Beck

it mainly had bops, still not like a super super fan

I listened to this twice and have already forgotten it. In general, my impression is that if it had come out a decade earlier it would have been interesting. Kinda boring as it is, but I don't hate the pop vibes.

Was stoked to hear this again as Guero seemed liked a triumphant return to the Odelay period when it released. Certainly the first half of the record tries very hard to get back into flow of Beck-vs-Dust-Brothers esoterica. But 20 years later, it feels less successful. Songs like E-Pro, Qué Onda Guero and Hell Yes feel like ideas fused together for the sake of camp and novelty; production tchotchkes. The better songs — Missing, Black Tambourine — try less hard to be weird. The second half of the record fares better. Broken Drum, Go it Alone, Farewell Ride are just well-written songs, and they skip the sonic thrift store treatment. Confirms my already-held suspicions that Beck does his best songwriting work when not distracted by being a genre dilettante.

Pretty groovy at times, despite some sameness. Not guaranteed I'll relisten, but not a terrible experience.

I was not expecting to enjoy as many songs as I did, I think I’ve heard the two more famous songs of him. But I had a fun time.

I love his album Sea Change, but this isn’t my thing

I will be honest, I was so un-enthused by the prospect of listening to Beck I put it off so much I had to listen to it early doors the following day. Anyway i don’t know why because im yet to hear a Beck song i don’t like. This album didn’t include anything I didn’t like but it was nothing groundbreaking. There were a couple that just pipped the others to the post like Girl - which I think in hindsight I liked the first 30 seconds of more than anything else, and the chorus was a little early Nirvana in a different font, Broken Drum and Farewell Ride which were maybe my joint favourites. Ultimately, I was disappointed to find Chain Reaction wasn’t a Diana Ross/Steps cover but hey, we can’t have it all.

2.5 stars I first heard a leaked version of Güero 2 months before its eventual release. There were unfinished versions of the song and a different track list, but my initial impression was it was a masterpiece. I was 15 and newly into indie music and Beck and it felt like a big deal. When the official release occurred and I listened to it, I was a bit disappointed. The opening song I had originally heard, “Missing,” was now the 4th track, making it feel like a throw away track. “Go it alone” had been early in the leaked version, but now was near the end of the record. The flow felt off. While “E-Pro” is a clear power opener in the likes of Odelay’s “Devil’s Haircut,” it didn’t feel as representative of the album as a whole. But perhaps these criticisms are easy for someone who listened to a leaked version burned on a CD over and over again for months, more than I ever listened to the official version over the course of the next 2 decades. In fact, I don’t know that I’ve listened to the album at all in the last 10 years. While my feelings on the album are inevitably impacted by my early experience, I don’t know that I would feel differently about this album today if the track order was preserved as I had initially heard it. My impressions today were that there is a lot to like in this record, particularly the first 4 tracks, and a lot of atmospheric, moody slow tracks that aren’t bad but feel a bit boring. The album overall doesn’t grab beyond the beginning, with the exception of “Go it alone” that still feels out of place at the end of the record. I can’t say the rest of the album tracks grab me, which leaves a long period time of the songs just playing and the album as a whole not feeling like a must-listen. In retrospect, what made me feel like the album was so amazing when I first heard it was just the newness of the genre to me at the time. Listening now, I can’t say I’m as impressed with what I’m hearing as anything new or revolutionary, but just competent well-ridden territory for Beck over a decade into his career. Most genres on the album had been presented better in previous efforts, leaving this as a successful effort to bring back some of the nostalgia for those other albums while making an album that feels effortful but less fulfilling.

I liked this enough. He is very consistent with his schtick but I wouldn’t reach for it

No idea how many bloody Beck albums there are on this list. I think this is the 3rd I've heard and it's the first one I enjoyed from start to finish. It's how I imaged a Beck album would sound - a good collection of compositions.

It’s Beck. Everything you expect from a Beck album—bombastic production on a collection of tracks that aren’t sure if they want to be rock, country, or pop. I would classify a lot of the instrumentation here as pretty experimental, with varying degrees of success. It’s certainly very cool and hip, but most of the songs just aren’t really that exciting.

Pretty much sounded like everything else I’ve heard by Beck which makes ok in my opinion!

Alt rock album

giving rock

A fun listen. Very cohesive style even with all of the genre-bending. Beck has an iconic vocal style.

Ok, enjoyable enough

I feel like nothing on this album is particularly new, but the way Beck put it all together was. I am also not drinking enough IPAs to really fully enjoy what is happening. itsart.gif

Gimme Fiction - Spoon Z - My Morning Jacket The Sunset Tree - The Mountain Goats Picaresque - The Decemberists Four terrific alternative/indie albums right there released in 2005, by bands not featured on this list. While Beck gets three (3!) I like Beck fine, but Guero does not need to be on here. Outside of Girl and E-Pro, which are great songs, its really not that memorable or different than other stuff he'd put out by 2005. The rap tracks especially just feel tiresome and really dated. Overall, its not bad, but I think the choice to add this one is a perfect example of how flawed this list is.

Thought songs in the album were all over the place, maybe it’s just not my style

👍👍

This is my favorite Beck album. I bought it back in the day because people were saying it was better than his prior stuff, and I agree.

enjoyable album dont know if i loved it but it has its peakss

Experimental sounds with questionable lyrics

Not my cup of tea, but was fine. Might have been good with a bit of editing

I feel like this was better than the other two; it didn’t seem so depressing. I'm just relieved that I won't be hearing from Beck again

While it got a little repetitive later on, there are some really awesome grooves here. Favorite track: E-Pro

Easy listening but nothing too unique or special. Typical Beck style and sound.

I'm not a Beck fan, but I didn't mind listening to this album. It wouldn't have been one that I picked up, but I'm glad that I listened to it.

Like the album. Not typically what I listen to. The album is very different with songs that all have a unique sound. Favorite song - go it alone

Not really my thing, need to

Took a stroll down memory lane and found ‘Guerolito’ which was a compilation of the full album worth of remixes. Not as good as the originals, but they never are. Just different. Probably my third or fourth favorite Beck album. Solid 7/10. I always remember this tour, since it was right in the middle of the RC. Bonnie Y brought in all the iron-one that were sold at merch for me to stick on their own T’s. When asked at the concert whether she wanted them applied to tees - she just let them know that ‘she has a guy’.

Was fine, interesting in places, but not amazing.

ihan tämmöstä perusbeckiä, jotain kivoja tunnelmia mutta pääsääntösesti tylsää. Pannaan perjantain kunniaksi GOLSE

Very funny, in my groove

7/10 2026/1/4

Definitely better than “Sea Change”. The music was good. If Beck didn’t mumble, I would put this album in my library.

kinda too windy and stonery for me but i get the appeal and the ideas/executions on a lot of these songs are super creative and fun

23. e-pro is good

Pretty solid mid-period Beck album although I think it’s maybe Beck’s 4th or 5th best. Sounds like he wanted to do ‘Odelay’ again.

Similar to Odelay, but with less blatant use of random samples and a better sense of song craft.

It was fine, first song was the best.

I couldn't really tell what genre it was, but it wasn't bad.

5/10 Best songs: Girl, Scarecrow, Go It Alone, Farewell Ride A slow- to medium-tempo album the whole way through that relies heavily on (admittedly interesting) beats and less on lyrics or singing. Though the second half is pretty good, I find the album conceptually interesting but just not very appealing. I've never really gotten into Beck, and I think this album is emblematic as to why.

It was around the time of this release, give or take, that I fell out with this artist when I heard he was a Scientologist. I was soo disheartened & couldn't even listen to any of his work without the sad, icky feeling of disappointment overshadowing my whole listening experience. This cat is uniquely talented & borders upon greatness. And it's MY irrational hang-up that robbed me of a decade plus of fandom. I DID eventually outgrow my foolishness (on this particular issue anyway) and came back to unashamedly appreciating this man's distinctive output over the last handful of years or so. THIS album, while not my favorite, is not bad & I imagine I would come to enjoy it even more with repeated listens. 3 stars seems about right. Honorable mention to the Futurama cameo back in the Midnite Vultures days

Beck had a nice arc going. He initially became known for "Loser" which was a radio-foisted throwaway song, a house made of straw. Then came Odelay (I have a soft spot for this album as part of my teenage years), which was well-received critically but also cemented his status as an aloof self-styled witticist type. A couple albums later we were given Sea Change, which was truly brilliant and was marketed as his transformation into a mature, serious artist— but! He immediately pivoted back to this kind of stuff, which, in retrospect, makes Sea Change feel insincere. I suppose Morning Phase was his attempt to relegitimize that persona, but... whatever, I can't be bothered with all this.

Album #14 Beck: Guero My first time hearing a Beck album in full. From what I knew of him through his hits, I was expecting something pretty quirky and out there. The first half of the album was definitely that, though I think that I did find the charm in it, which I was afraid might be lost on me. However, the second half, though not bad, seemed a lot more ordinary; at times sounding like music you might hear in a Lincoln commercial. I feel as though Beck is at his best with offbeat,t humorous lyrics, and eclectic vocal styles, the best of which, in my opinion, came in Que Onda Guero. I can’t say I was ever bored listening to this, though, and I actually respect Beck for creating his own sound entirely. I’m pretty sure this isn’t Beck’s most lauded album, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him again, and I definitely would be curious to hear more from him. Best Tracks: Que Onda Guero, Girl, Missing Worst Track: Farewell Ride Score out of 10:6.5

This was all over the place and thus necessarily hit-and-miss. I do respect the boldness of exploring so many ideas instead of settling for one clear concept, though.

Okay so i did write notes for each song but this deleted. I see alot of 90s tupac rap inspired. Some indie rock. Harmonica, deep voice, guitar, country old west. A very dinamic album with different vibes for each song. Some stuff i didnt like much but is a fun album. Fav:E-Pro, Send a message for her, Broken drum

Beck always keeps me interested I'll give him that

It's a solid album, but it doesn't exactly excite me.

Alright, prefer the sad shit like sea change and morning phase

Not a bad album, some pretty good songs, but a bunch of others that were nothing to write home about

I like this album a little better than "Odelay" so I'll give it three stars.

A return the Odeley style after Sea Change. But I’m more of a fan of the Sea Change era. Couple good songs though

Starts off banging, b-side is a bit of a drag

Beck has an extraordinary amount of talent, and sometimes that translates into a catchy hook. Mostly, I don’t connect with the entirety of the album. He’s a song guy.

better beck than the last beck

Listenable, but didn’t jump out.

This may be a bit of a stretch for some, but I personally see Beck as the male equivalent to Madonna and you need to hear me out on this. Both of them always make it their goal to drastically switch up their sounds all of the time with each project in an effort to try and gather the populations from those sounds to their evergrowing discography. They both were cultural juggernauts of their time and have since been relegated to "old head who won't shut up." Anyways, Guero feels like Beck's attempt to try and bring Trip Hop back into the mainstream after the genre ran dry in the beginning of the 2000s, and honestly I think some of Beck's attempts here are pretty noble but don't quite land in all the ways I would have hoped and liked. This album is pretty safe as far as all the experimentation goes and even with some of the more bold swings here I am just not wowed by Beck yet as an artist. This is definitely worth your while if you have heard some of his work and are looking for a nice entry point, but I don't think I'd see many people coming back after the soft introduction.

Would not buy

Pretty solid album, there were some really catchy tracks that I know I'll be playing repeatedly but this album is one of the ones I'll have to give multiple listens to really appreciate. My favorite songs are the Eliotte Smith tribute "Broken drum" and the second track which I can't spell the name of

This is a typical Beck album, complete with a few standout tracks and then a bunch of mediocrity. I've always believed that the best Beck album would be a compilation of the 2-3 good songs on each album. I guess I should make a playlist. Liked Songs Added: E-Pro Girl Hell Yes

Not my type of music, i enjoy the use of different instruments and the the dual language aspect to some of the songs. the songs all sound okay, nothing particularly stood out to me. The first half of the album is better than the second half.

A little more tame than Beck’s earlier stuff. Some catchy songs though.

Beck is one of the most talented musicians. I like his ironic/sarcastic slacker approach. Yet this album feels like only an echo of Odelay. Heck the first guitar strum on Guero is 1:1 the same sound than Devils Haircut on Odelay. I don't see the point of this album.

The first half of the album is quite catchy and groovy but then it becomes more and more annoying. Weak three stars. favourite: "E-Pro", "Qué Onda Guero", "Girl", "Earthquake Weather" 2,5

It all sounds good and is very well made. He can definitely establish a solid groove. I just don't find anything here very catchy, none of it really sticks with me. I probably wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio in the car but I'm not adding it to my library.

Another quite middle of the road Beck album, there’s some quite cool production and I enjoyed some of the music and the lyrics but all in all nothing really grabs me. I think I just don’t like Beck that much, shoot me. 3.5/5 Best Song: Farewell Ride

Another collection of fine songs, I always thought I liked beck? But he’s pretty average, it’s not a bad album it’s just a bit boring I think. Best song: Earthquake Weather

Beck is so good. Weird and fun . Favorite song Missing. Funky and becks voice really hits me the right way. Every album I’ve heard from him I’m a fan of

80s country?

Beck is a quirky dude that is always able to squeeze out some cool jams and hits. This album was okay,

Albarn does what he does and he does it good

Guero is essentially Beck doing Odelay again. Same producers (Dust Brothers), same vibe, same sort of songs albeit coming off an emotional record like Sea Change. I hear Devil's Haircut in E-Pro, Where It's At in Que Onda Guero? and so on and so forth. What drags this one down for me is that near the end right around Scarecrow, this begins to drag. I hear a beat, the slide guitar and all the usual elements and it just sounds like Beck but without much excitement to it. Odelay sounded like fun all throughout and there were entertaining hooks and moments before Ramshackle quieted things down. Guero feels like it comes and goes and then quiets down. And then I'm like "Ehhhhh". Some positives to note: Broken Drum is a seriously brilliant tribute to the late Elliott Smith (one of many around this time). I really dig the vibes on the trio of Missing, Black Tambourine and Earthquake Weather. Pretty much a lot of the great stuff appears during the first half of the album. I'm not too particular with Hell Yes, but shout-out Christina Ricci. Overall, this album is Beck trying to be the Beck I know from the 90s but with the added hit of Sea Change. The result is mixed in my book (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)

Becks Becks up some really Becky Beckishness most Beckfully.

The heads on the album cover remind me of Spirited Away. Favorite track: E-Pro

some enjoyable moments!

Good. And clearly Beck

6.5/10 Highlights: Hell Yes Rental Car Broken Drum E-Pro

Some solid tracks. Just doesn’t meet the energy or songwriting of Odelay.

It was alright... a few standout songs, but it started to all kind of blend together after a while.

I'm not a huge Beck fan. There is some good stuff on here, but overall it drags a bit.

Que' Onda Guero was auditorily stimulating and kept my attention. Hell Yes is a combination of rock and techno with a killer baseline.

Beckin ainoa tuttu levy on omasta hyllystä löytyvä Odelay!

Hmm, not so many songs I know

Good album

better than expected.

Not bad!

Removed

3 out of 5 Some awesome classic Beck songs. But some songs were too screechy for me!

Very Becky album. Not bad just not my style

Not really my cuppa tea but did not hate it. Would quite happily have this on as background music.

Better than the last Beck I listen to like two days ago.

Plenty of fun ideas, a bit more stuck with me compared to other Beck albums.

I always find Beck clever and agreeable. But it tends to lack meaning or emotional attachment for me at times. I don't know if that's the lyrics or the way he delivers them. This album is one of those times. But you keep being you Beck, I'm glad you're out there.

I don’t feel like this one is as revolutionary as Odelay! but Beck continues to test the limits of genre mashing here. From that perspective, the most popular tracks “E-Pro” and “Go It Alone” are a few of the safer songs on the record, but that’s not entirely surprising. This record does feel like it gets darker than I recall Odelay! getting, which was interesting to hear. I know "Broken Drum" was written about the death of his friend (and fellow musician), Elliott Smith. Even before I found that out, I had it flagged as one of my standout tracks.

beck proved that he's quite qüero indeed

Not bad, really. Not really my kind of music, but I sorta have had a vibe. Rental Car is good track.

Not really my taste in music but I enjoyed this well enough!

Quirky but listenable. Strange fascination with death later in the album. Still, good structure to the songs.

The beats are interesting but I hate whiny sounding singers ezpecially males which kind of killed it for me

Forgot how innovative Beck. is

A solid album, in the Beck pastiche mode. Inventive, silly, catchy; is it his best? No, but what is “best” with Beck anyway? He’ll reinvent his sound on the next album and it’ll be weird and fun. You can’t contain his creative crazy. By the way, if you want to read the most obnoxious, snotty, perfectly Pitcheforque review, see this: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/621-guero/

I like

Highlight Song/s: Girl Beck is a really weird musician, so many strange sounds and styles on this album but it 9 times out of 10 tends to work well. East Asian styled music, beep boop electronic music, Latin hip-hop. Really eclectic. I think this album might work better for me if I re-visit sometime.

Got over it by the back half but fun and upbeat album. I’ve always like the more chill beck albums but this one was a lot of fun.

Heard it before. I do like Beck and it's a fun album so, what can I say 3/5

Nowhere near his best work

Has some innovative ideas, but not something I would listen to for fun.

Finally, something experimental and also good. Some interesting stuff going on in this one. I wish I could rate half stars on this because this isn't outstanding but it is definitely good. 3.5

Seemed much longer than 57 minutes. One or two bright spots but mainly uninspiring.

There's a ton of variety in this record. There is so much genre switching that every track is different from the last. Some tracks hit, while others didn't, making for a fairly solid album. Favourite Track(s): Earthquake Weather Least Favourite Track(s): Hell Yes

this was better than I expected given I don't usually go in for Beck at all

Some songs were fun. Singer sounded kind of Creed-y at times, which made my skin crawl.

Musique pref : E-pro Pire musique : Emergency exit (on ronfle) 3.5/5 imo

I did like the more heavy leaning songs but most of it fell a little flat for me. I just dont find the overlay plod of the lyrics helps. Its like a dull march with some sparkle thrown on top with some heavy riff to try and get the audiance to stick. I am captivated for about 5 seconds then drop off again. Having never listened to this I was mildly excited to see what this had to offer from Beck. Not sure I recognise this in any meaningful way from what I knew. It was interesting in that the songs had quite a stylistic variance. I dont mind that as still seemed to have a pattern I could appreciate that unified it. "Hell Yes" was very different for example from most of it. Bit of a R&B / pop vibe about it and hear other songs in it but as this is a mid 00's album doubt it was trail blazing. Its attempt at the moody / bleak just never fully cut through. More towards that side of the fence was "Broken Drum". I actually hope we have more of Beck as some interesting potential but not really present in enough detail for this. 3 as it narrowly avoids the typical beige fodder.

You really don’t know what you’re going to get with Beck. I found that after 1 play through I was kinda whatever with this album, and then I started playing it again to test some speakers and I was enjoying it more now that I was familiar with the songs. Still giving it a 3 though but probably one of my higher rated 3s

Interesting that I'd not heard Beck before now definitely different and not quite what I'd usually listen to but I'm intrigued.

Ok, but walking dangerously close to the line between mellow and dull.

The first few songs were a fantastic start, but I lost interest as the album went on. Some of the slower songs especially I found to be quite repetitive, and I think the album was too long. Not really my kind of thing, but I can respect his talent.

Two good songs, then a bunch of average. Some sounded like he was going for a Cypress Hill, Black Sunday groove.

My third from Beck which seems a little excessive. I mean I like Beck but don't feel like he did enough to merit three albums on this list. I rated both the other two from him 4/5 so apparently I do actually like his music when it comes down to it. For this album, I like Go It Alone and E-Pro but the rest seems like kind of just standard Beck Alt. It's not bad but it's not something that I feel needs to be on this list. I do enjoy this album and was glad to have listened to it today but it's not something that I feel I need to return to very often. 3/5

Apart from the opening track, I thought the first half was whatever, but the second half was great. This album has a pretty interesting blend of hip hop and rock without straight up being rap rock, which I enjoyed a lot. This album is pretty unique but still doesn’t have anything impressive. 7/10

Not as strong as his other big albums in my opinion. Low 3/5

Some good songs but does not make a good album

Eh, it's Beck. I didn't really care for Odelay nor Sea Change. This album is better, but still meh. There is some interesting sampling but the tunes don't capture my attention. Listening to this 20 years later, I get Wolfgang Press vibes.

No acabo de entrar en Beck, aprobado

Right from the jump I could tell this was produced by the Dust Brothers; hell yeah! Easily the best Beck album I've heard. That being said, it's still Beck. HIs vocals always sound like they're performed by someone who'd rather be doing anything else right now. Some of the cooler parts lose their impact due to their overly repetitive usage. And finally, I think this could have ben trimmed down in length. I'd still listen to this one again though. I fee like it might be a grower.

not bad not bad

Very varied. I love that. My favourites were Girl and Rental Car.

I think I just may not be a Beck fan, and that’s ok. When I listen to a full album, I can always tell the songs that I like the most were specifically added for people like me, people that don’t understand the experimental side of what Beck’s doing, people that the record company was surely trying to placate with more palatable radio fare. He has my admiration, but not my fandom.

some good songs on this one! Definitely enjoyed it more than Odelay. Fave song: Girl (really liked this one!)

Not in the mood for this today, but it started to win me over with its groove and overall atmosphere. I'll go with 3 stars.

Not as good as Odelay.

scale: 1 - skipping if heard it again/actually skipped it 2- meh can be skipped/reaches point to skip 3 -nothing wrong/easy listen/not seeking out 4 - would listen to again 5 - must listen E-Pro - 3.5 Que' Onda Guero - 3.5 Girl - 3.5 Missing - 3 Black Tambourine - 3.5 Earthquake Weather - 3 Hell Yes - 2 Broken Drum - 3 Scarecrow - 3.5 Go It Alone - 4 Farewell Ride - 3.5 Rental Car - 3 Emergency Exit - 3 I am kinda confused by this album, many songs have an interesting harmony or instrumentation and blur the line of being repeatably listen

I still don't know if I get Beck but I liked this better than most of Beck

Back to what I expect when listen to beck

Knew the singles going into this, but not the rest. Despite the fact that Wikipedia categorizes this album as "sampledelia", there isn't much of that here. The only other Beck album that I really know is "Odelay" though, and compared to that, "Guero" is pretty different in that regard. Maybe to its detriment too. I thought the quality dipped a bit midway through as things started to sound a little similar (I thought "Farewell Ride" and Emergency Exit" were the same song after my initial listen). Still, I liked how things started here and the album is pretty moody despite how poppy most of the tracks appear. Best tracks: E-Pro, Girl, Go it Alone, Rental Car

Personal preference obviously - this faded into background noise for me. Nothing bad about it but nothing super attention grabbing although I didn't sit down with the intent of just completely focusing on it and doing nothing else.

Another inconsistant one. I absolutely loved about a third of the songs and I'll be listening to them again. The other two thirds however didn't really do anything for me.

Regular Beck

Black Keys.

Well..... First thoughts were, not what I expected from Jeff. Soon realised it wasn't who I thought. On the whole though it was alright. Probably won't listen again, but there wasca mix of genres and styles and all were done well. Got to be worth a 3

I really liked the sound. It’s very different from my usual taste. However I did think some of the songs sound the same and it got a little stagnant. That being said I thought it was very cohesive and he did a good job of making sure you knew how the overall mood was moving and changing. Not a bad album just not the best either.

Another good album from Beck, although not as fantastic as Sea Change. More of a vibes album rather than one that impacts you, despite kinda continuing the feel of Sea Change, just with a southern/western vibe. Dunno if anything is particularly hitting me from this. Doesn't seem to have the emotional punches that its predecessor had. Although I do remember E-Pro from playing it in Rock Band 2. Ultimately though, this feels like an album that could be dropped from the list. Sea Change covers this era of Beck well, and you got Odelay for the 90s stuff. Feeling somewhere between a 3 and 4, but don't think it'll be something I go back to much, so I'll stick with a 3 for now.

Bit tepid
