Reviews (page 6 of 12)

Was not what I was expecting. Like it 4/5

That was a pleasure to listen to. So nice to branch out on Beck

With one listen lacked highlights, but it freewheeled forward effortlessly and had enough variety without compromising that Beck-sound.

Not my favorite Beck album, but Beck is always good.

Interesting

Fun relaxed album. 3.5 stars

The only Beck album I have ever owned and I wore it out. That said, it's not completely a 5 for me.

A very diverse album, but well crafted. I didn’t love every song, but I loved the range and general vibe. Would definitely check out their other stuff!

I liked it ok on my first listen but didn't love it. On my second and third though, I really started to dig it. It's possible after 10 listens or so this could get up to 5 stars but as it is it's sitting at 4. It's a pretty dense record but I found myself more able to enjoy it when I was able to look at the various instruments and personnel on each track.

I love Miskito Vultures but am not otherwise one to seek out Beck. This was pretty good though. I didn’t realize Sea Change came before this, and I like the mixture of a couple of Sea Change-style tunes with what Inusually think of as Beck’s style. Still, the white guy rap thing is pretty tough. 3.5, rounding to 4 because it is a pretty solid effort.

better than expected, solid production, couple of bops

Very interesting. The span of genres felt very wide.

Muy variado

Et beh voilà

on a bien mangé en tout cas ( pates)

Great album!!

It’s beck. Good to listen to with the baby while cooking.

8.5/10 - 4/5 Such a pioneer. I knew several songs going in, and I like that the album sits in its own lane. Excellent blend of occasionally country-leaning folk and electronic hip hop. The mellower and moody songs didn't bring the album down. They helped set the tone and genre.

Guero: Another great discovery. I’d heard E-Pro before and enjoyed it but never gave this album a listen. It’s consistently strong from top to bottom, a more focussed, less bizarre Midnite Vultures (probably my favourite Beck album). Missing even sounds a lot like Broken Train off that record. Girl is a great piece of twisted pop, Black Tambourine and Go It Alone are minimalist geeky funk. Earthquake Weather reminds me of 3+3 era Isley Bros. The title of Hell Yes is also a fitting review. Reminds me of Talking Heads. The fact that Christina Ricci provides vocals just makes it even better. Scarecrow sounds like him trying to cover Billie Jean and failing wonderfully. Broken Drum (apparently about Elliot Smith) points the way towards the more introspective stuff on Sea Change and Morning Phase. It’s lovely stuff, a tribute that’s sad without being mawkish. It’s amazing how much mileage he can get out of fairly limited ingredients. Crunchy drums, minimalist guitar riff, distorted mics and the odd weird sample - yet it never gets dull. A hair’s breadth from being a five. Right up there with Odelay and Midnite Vultures

Guero Im a bit behind and didn’t get to listen to this in one sitting yesterday. I’m not as familiar with this as the albums either side of it, Sea Change and The Information, and I would also generally default to listening to Odelay or Midnite Vultures when I think about Beck albums. But I should listen to this more - I really did enjoy it. It’s got the diversity and eclecticism you might expect, with a great sound and some super songs Probably not right in that top Beck bracket but a definite 4. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lots of really great music to be had in here. Feels like the hot summers growing up. Glad to have Beck bring the focus back to his sampling. There's a lot of cool styles that are brought into the album and melded together to form what I think of as his iconic style. Love that it's a group effort from Jack White on bass for Go It Alone to Elliot Smith's death being the inspiration of Broken Drum

Torn between 3 and 4, Broken Drum was devastating. I'll give it a 4

Awesome grooves.

One of Rock music’s greatest chameleon, Beck offers up another slam-dunk mixtape of a record to remind us he’s as vital in the new millennium as he was in the last one. “E-Pro” is an immediate shot across the bow, and the songs that follow really do warrant the musical question, “Qué onda, güero?” as Beck tries on musical styles like coats as tuxedo fitting, often mixing genres within songs. It’s not just an experimental jukebox by an inventive slacker, “Guero” is an intentional artistic statement even if it’s not ever too careful or cohesive. Part of Beck’s appeal is that he’s not one thing. He’s ever-restless and searching and he takes all the music he’s tinkering with seriously even if he never really takes himself that seriously. Salsa mixes with spoken-word Electronica on “Missing”; “Scarecrow” sounds like Radiohead and Gorillaz decided to have a baby; “Black Tambourine” channels the dark, insistent energy of a Curtis Mayfield jam; “Girl” goes for galloping alternative pop layered with haunting Beach Boy harmonies and hand claps. And like every Brian Wilson song ever, Beck’s upbeat musical attitude is in contrast to lyrics shot through with melancholy, with references to distress, alienation, darkness, and mortality. “Something’s coming,” Beck sings on “Earthquake Weather,” but he needn’t have warned us—we already knew to expect something unexpected. He’d trained us for that, he’d prepared the way. On “Guero,” he does not disappoint.

I listened to this album growing up, but haven't put it on for a number of years. My thoughts were about the same - the tracks on the first half of this album are damn-near flawless. Unique, groovy, catchy. But the second half has some pretty mid tracks (scarecrow, farewell ride, rental car, emergency exit). On top of that, the album doesn't have a feeling of cohesion between tracks, other than maybe some slide guitar and sun-kissed guitar giving a "western" feel. I'd probably rate this a 3.5/5, so I'll round up. 4/5.

I dig it. Pretty fun vibes

I like this.

Good stuff! I enjoyed the Mexican influences in the sound and lyrics.

I remember listening to Go It Alone from Pandora Radio when I was in high school. I thought I was so cool at the time.

I always enjoy listening to Beck, even if it's not something I might seek.

Really good got some great tracks

Started by some hard rock-ish song and I thought « this one not for me » but the more I listened to it the more I liked it’s funky melancholic vibe

Love it

4/5. When you feel sad but also grunge and don’t want to explore it

Really liked this. Listened to Hell Yes on a loop this weekend.

Favorite tracks: Que Onda Guero & Girl

Feels like a few different genres all in one album. It's a nice mix.

Beck albums are just weird because you can be listening to it then just get to a track that you know so well from something else and are just kind of taken out of the moment trying to remember where you know this song from. This album starts off right away with one such track in "E-pro" which sent me down a rabbit hole to find out it was from a Destiny 2 trailer and also Rock Band 2. A couple of tracks "Girl" does the same thing, which was a Nissan commercial. There just aren't many artists in my regular rotation that I accidentally listen to 50 times without noticing. This should be good but it is also kind of distracting and kind of makes those tracks feel out of place. Favorite track: "E-Pro" 3.5/5

Some hits, interesting throughout

I like the Latin flavour to some of the songs.

Great album. Will be adding to my regular rotation of music to listen to and will explore more of Beck’s full albums.

Has a bit of a nineties alternative sound, think Eels meets Gorillaz. Nicely eclectic without going overboard like Odelay.

Hell Yes.

Often referred to as the unofficial sequel to Beck's masterpiece 'Odelay'. 'Guero' doesn't have the same impact and novelty, but it's great hearing Beck and the Dust Brothers working together again. I haven't listened to this album in many years and I forgot how strong it actually is. There are a lot of great songs here and it's a solid album from start to finish.

Good opening track. Remains interesting and varied touching on a couple genres. A lot of the Blues in here.

There are definitely better beck albums, but definitely his best work after the boring nothingness that sea change was. Girl, black tambourine, and Go it alone are my favorite tracks

I don't listen to Beck albums often but when I do remember just how good they are

This album is a VIBE. Really fun to listen to all the way through, didn’t blow my mind in any particular way but I enjoyed the feeling it evoked a lot.

I enjoy Beck's unique style of rock, these songs are cool.

I really enjoy this album, knew like 1 song but it was nice to listen to it all.

Very good album all around. Did some research and tried another one of his "Sea Change". Even better. I give that one a 5.

Very unique and I loved it a lot. Gueralita is good also.

This is pretty good, def check out when feeling like something!

A good pleasant album - impeccably produced a - it’s Beck after all. It’s a bit longer than it should - and maybe not as groundbreaking as some of his other records but fun nonetheless.

It's Beck, it's great and transcends genres

Highs: E-Pro, Qué Onda Guero, Girl, Go It Alone, Farewell Ride, Scarecrow Lows: missing, earthquake weather

Quite enjoyable and can definitely understand the inclusion even if it isn't something I'll listen to very often

Good early 2000s feel

I knew this album before this project and many songs have been on heavy rotation on many playlists. I'm a big fan of Beck and this album is one of my favorites by him. Love this album

Pretty good, like everything I’ve had from Beck. ‘E-Pro’ especially is a good song. The end.

👌🏼

Good album by Beck!

Enjoyable.

3.75 Big fan of E-Pro but don’t remember listening to this one Maybe not his most exciting album? Plenty of dirty bluesy folky rock Vibes & beats really good, had totally forgotten about the Dust Brothers Best: E-Pro

A hip danceable modern rock pop thing. A lot of fun.

First song great, lots of variety afterwards, every track seemed different and interesting.

Back when "Guero" came out, I was a little over Beck and felt Guero was re-treading old ground, an "Odelay Part 2." However, I went through his entire discography earlier this year, and I found that I liked Guero much more than I remembered, and, this many years away from it, it does feel like a look back at a different time in alternative radio rock music, music that really doesn't get made, now, not with the same bold audacity and confidence that an artist can be well-paid, well-known, and make something that pushes a little outside of the boundaries of what else is on the top of the charts. Overall, I do not think it is a perfect album, and I still like "Midnite Vultures" more, but I'd put "Guero" right under "Odelay" in a ranking of his discography: 1.) Midnite Vultures 2.) Modern Guilt 3.) Mutations 4.) Odelay 5.) Guero 6.) The Information 7.) Morning Phase 8.) Sea Change 9.) Hyperspace 10.) Old crap & Colors

An excellent album which invites me to want to hear more. Even the lesser songs are at least interesting despite not being favorites. A solid album that deserves future listens.

I like Beck but I'm not sure this needed to be here. It's fun genre hopping with well performed songs all the way through. Even though I probably wouldn't have put it on this list it sure does smoke a lot of the dreck on this list out of the water.

I kept starting this album, but either got distracted or having to run off to do something in “vital”. I only finally listened to it all the way through at 4 am sleep-deprived and anxious. I wanted it to be transporting and maybe sleep inducing but it was neither. it was, however, very cool and eclectic. I knew a lot of songs individually, but I’ve never listened to the whole thing. He does feel like one of a kind.

Ok so although I knew the name, I had never really listened to Beck before this. And I like it way more thank I thought I would. It's pretty varied with lots of surprising elements. Production is pretty good too

Beck is great. You can hear hints of a lot of other great artists in these songs (Weezer, Chris Cornell, Prince, and others), but it's all uniquely his. I hadn't ever listened to this album all the way through, but it didn't disappoint. I'm not sure it's his best, but it's still great. Which says something about him.

This was a fun album. Very enjoyable and something I'll likely listen to again.

Solid Beck album. I like Odelay more, but this is probably number 2

This album is above average compared to some of his earlier other work, but still nothing extraordinary.

as someone who hates "Loser" and has allowed my knowledge of Beck to begin and end there, i was extremely skeptical, but let's be real: this shit goes

Honoustly, pretty good vibes

8/10. Really solid album throughout, no complaints here despite the length.

I like how heavy some of the tracks play, I generally find the writing really catchy too. It’s quite solid.

Solid!

Alltaf snilld!

My first full album from Beck. And what I was anticipating wasn’t really what I got at all. Because what a fun, vibrant, and unique listen. He somehow managed to combine alt rock with trip hop. And it doesn’t feel tacky or gimmicky. It’s as if they played and recorded all of these snippets, and then sampled themselves. So many different sounds are used on each song, and they get chopped up and looped in such interesting ways. But there is definitely some live instrumentation on tracks as well. You even get Jack White on bass in Go It Alone. There is a lot going on here, but for some reason, Beck’s very low and monotonous style of singing/rapping is the perfect thing to tie it all together. Something about it is satisfying, because it’s like even I can sing along to it. Plus if he had a very dynamic range, I feel like it would be too much for the music. Truthfully I don’t dislike any song on here. I don’t love them all, because none of them are perfect, but some are really great examples of why Beck is such an interesting artist. The only song I have any grievances with is Broken Drum. It is a tribute to Elliott Smith, and is probably the most traditional of any song on here. It has this surprisingly heavy guitar that I like, and isn’t a bad song by any means. It’s actually a beautiful one. But it doesn’t contain the same traits that make the other songs as enjoyable. Which is probably for the better. I’m sure Beck has stronger albums, but this seemed like a strong start. This is wholly unique, and honestly not like anything I’ve ever heard before. It’s not as if he invented sampling, it’s just the way he utilizes the art form. Rating: 7/10

I was happy to see this pop up. I love Beck but haven't spent much time exploring his discography outside of Midnite Vultures. I was familiar with "E-Pro" and "Girl." I actually had no idea this was released in 2005; I thought it was from the 90s. Beck's an easy listen for me although this album wasn't as fun as Midnite Vultures. I plan to keep it on my phone and listen again as I did like it enough to warrant more listens.

True fusion of virtually every genre. There’s enough pop to prevent it from being alternative, and I bet Beck would be rapping ever if rap was never introduced. He’s brilliant.

This had more bangers than I remembered

Very cool unique rock album

So many jams. Solid, but I like Odelay more.

1) E-Pro - (#17, 6 wks) - 8,5 2) Qué Onda Guero - 8,5 3) Girl - (#25, 7 wks) - 9,0 4) Missing - 8,0 5) Black Tambourine - 8,0 6) Earthquake Weather - 8,5 7) Hell Yes - 8,0 8) Broken Drum - 8,0 9) Scarecrow - 8,0 10) Go It Alone - 8,0 11) Farewell Ride - 8,0 12) Rental Car - 8,0 13) Emergency Exit - 8,0 14) Send a Message to Her - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,18 (82/100)

Beck is such a great musician. Everything he does is at least interesting. This isn't his best album, but there's plenty of great songs on here. You have real upbeat numbers like E-Pro, which is a great kick-off for the album, via weird electronic robot songs like Hell Yes, and then a gorgeous ballad like Broken Drum. The music and instrumentation is so varied and interesting throughout. Beck transcends genres even as he re-invents them, and I for one applaud that. 4.5 rounded down.

Alt rock gem. Laidback vibe but catchy hooks. Clever subtle sampling from a lot of 70s work. Standouts are "E-Pro", "Girl", and "Go It Alone".

I wasn't a fan going in as my only experience was E-pro from guitar hero. Pleasantly surprised. Would listen again

Beck is cool

Know this album well. Really enjoy it, not an absolute favorite and not sure if it'd be my top Beck choice, but it's an all around solid one.

Love this. Takes me back 👌

I was a pretty big Beck fan back in the 90s and early 2000s but by the time this album came out, I wasn't listening to a ton of new music and I just never got around to this. It feels like a synthesis of all his disparate styles into a more commercial, homogenized sound. Which isn't a bad thing at all, but I do kind of miss those rough edges.

It was pretty good i liked it but it needs a little umph to make it 5/5 idk what it is though just my opinion

Very catchy!

Beck takes a groove, makes it weird, and builds on it. Really fun and interesting.

So. So. Good.

I know this album! or at least, a few songs :) highlights were E-Pro and Girl, but solid listening throughout.

I was skeptical about this album, but must confess that it changed my mind about Beck. It’s groovy, but no pretentious, infantile but not annoying. Great melodies, catchy tunes, an “la la la” choruses to sing along. Great discovery!

Chill med det her også litt mer tempo på det tgo

I listened to this quite a bit in high school after it came out. For me it conjures memories of driving down Broadway in Rochester listening to "Que Onda Guero". There are several excellent songs, but I have always felt that although the album starts very strong it doesn't keep up the energy it establishes in the first 4-5 songs. As an album I wish it was more cohesive. Interesting, I just now learned that Jack White played that incredibly iconic and groovy bassline on "Go It Alone".

I had the leaked bootleg of this before it was officially released, so there was a fair amount of mystique surrounding it for me. Since I was somewhat disappointed in his previous album "Sea Change," I saw "Guero" as more or less a return to form. For the most part it's a fun, lighthearted romp, but one that comes from a personal place. I certainly welcomed it with open arms when it arrived, but it ended up being the last Beck album I bought a physical copy of. From here on out he basically just rehashes different combinations of his earlier output with some tweaks in the production. When Beck started out, each of his albums always had a fairly radical shift in style between them, and I always looked forward to that. I enjoyed this album, but it was the first album of his that failed to really surprise me.

overraskende god

Was quite a pleasant listen

Album is super unique. Good listen the whole way through.

My first Beck of which I believe are three on this generator, and it's kind of weird to start with the last of the three, as knowing what I know of Beck, this feels like a sequel to something I haven't heard yet, and in turn can't completely appreciate it. However, this is still good, and I enjoyed my time with it. You can hear the Gorillaz comparisons everyone is saying, but there's also something here that is completely unique, and I appreciate that. Nothing beats that opening track though, makes sense it was the hit from this album, because it hits HARD.

Aivan menevää rokettirollia. Alkupään biisit puree paremmin kuin loppu.

Fun and interesting

Werde ich mir gerne wieder anhören!

It's pretty good, nothing that particularly stands out too much. I like the trippy mexican vibe throughout though. His voice reminds me of the vocalist for Failure, that's pretty cool. But I doubt I'll become a huge fan of his work. 6,5 out of 10

a fun collection of songs

Go it Alone is a really good track. Also enjoyed Missing and Hell Yes

I do be enjoying some Beck!

Definitely some Jams on here, but nothing really stood out for me on either listen. It's really good background music, but I don't think I could focus on it through its entirety.

Listened to the whole album a couple times.

BL: Beck is an artist (as I’ve probably stated before) I don’t really “get”, the previous album I got on this generator was just ok. As I assume this one will be, maybe it’ll sweep me off my feet but I’ll assume it’s gonna be self indulgent nonsense like the rest of them. AL: this is a LOT better than I expected it to be. I definitely think the record overstays it’s welcome, and there is a massive dip about 2/3rds of the way through the album but the combination of Central American sounds with standard twangy desert rock was a good combination. Some tracks were amazing. Most were just good or ok though. Glad I gave it a listen, it was a pleasant surprise. Though I suspect I may be raving so much because I actually did enjoy it, which is a proper Beck first for me FT: “E-Pro”, “Qué Onda Guero”, “Black Tambourine”, “Go It Alone”, “Farewell Ride”, “Send a Message to Her” 4/5

Jawdropping material, compositions so creative with crisp production, the last couple of songs stay interesting but not as replayable as that first 8-song stretch which is perfection.

ntroduction: Beck's "Guero" is a musical tapestry that blends genres, influences, and lyrical narratives into a kaleidoscopic journey through his creative mind. Released in 2005, this album marks a significant point in Beck's career, where he successfully fused his eclectic style with elements of hip-hop, folk, electronic, and rock, resulting in an album that's both accessible and artistically rich. Musical Arrangement: "Guero" showcases Beck's ability to create a sonic landscape that constantly morphs and evolves. The album's production is a blend of organic and electronic elements, with acoustic guitars, funky basslines, and catchy percussion patterns sharing space with synthesizers, samples, and drum machines. This fusion creates a dynamic and textured sound that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish. "E-Pro" opens the album with an explosive burst of distorted guitars and energetic drums, immediately grabbing the listener's attention. "Que Onda Guero" introduces a Mexican folk flavor with its accordion-like keyboards and a playful, street-savvy atmosphere. "Girl" combines a simple acoustic guitar riff with glitchy electronic effects, exemplifying Beck's genre-blurring tendencies. Lyrical Content: The lyrics on "Guero" are as diverse as the music itself. Beck weaves a tapestry of stories, emotions, and social commentary, often with a touch of surrealism and wordplay. "E-Pro" delves into themes of frustration and disillusionment, with lines like "See me comin' to town with my soul / Straight down out of the world with my fingers." "Girl" portrays a narrative of longing and unrequited love through a series of vivid, disjointed images. "Black Tambourine" explores the power of rhythm and music as a form of resistance and release. Collaborations: One of the album's standout features is the collaborations that enhance its sonic diversity. Beck enlisted the talents of producers and musicians like The Dust Brothers, Nigel Godrich, and Jack White, each of whom brought their unique perspectives to the project. Nigel Godrich's production on tracks like "Broken Drum" and "Scarecrow" adds an ethereal and experimental dimension to the album. Jack White's guitar work on "Go It Alone" injects a raw and bluesy energy that contrasts beautifully with Beck's style. Themes and Atmosphere: "Guero" navigates various emotional landscapes, from introspection to exuberance. It captures a sense of urban restlessness and multicultural influences, reflecting Beck's Los Angeles upbringing. The album's cover art, featuring a graffiti-style rendering of the title, visually reinforces this fusion of cultures and ideas. "Missing" offers a poignant reflection on the sense of loss and nostalgia, with lines like "Like wind through the trees, my soul has been set free." "Hell Yes" channels a playful, almost absurd energy, highlighting the irony and absurdity of modern life. Evolution of Beck: "Guero" represents a crucial phase in Beck's artistic evolution. It balances his previous lo-fi folk tendencies with a more polished and genre-expansive sound. This versatility showcases Beck's ability to adapt and innovate while staying true to his core identity as a musical chameleon. Conclusion: "Guero" is a testament to Beck's musical prowess and his willingness to explore new sonic territories. It offers a captivating blend of genres, memorable lyrics, and rich collaborations, making it a must-listen for anyone interested in the diverse and ever-evolving landscape of contemporary music. Beck's ability to create a cohesive yet eclectic album demonstrates his enduring influence on the alternative music scene, making "Guero" a timeless gem in his discography.

A strong opening track so often makes a difference - throw me into the pool already. Job done here by an aggressive beat on "E-Pro" leading off a (for me) comeback album - I didn't much like Beck's previous Sea Change but this has more of the fun/groove of Midnight Vultures. Not quite the same funky vibe but with some different moods and rhythms he regains a lot of the energy he'd lost which for me is what makes his songs (and therefore the lack of it, breaks them). It does fade a bit over the final few tracks - weirdly his dropped tuning feels off-putting - but it's still a quality listen overall and a keeper. Fave cut: "Earthquake Weather" 7/10 4 stars

Go IT Alone is a top 10 Beck song for me, great album

Really solid album from Beck. Some great tracks here and some funky beats and rhythmic vibes from the likes of Emergency Exit and Farewell Ride, really pushing at what makes music.

Good. Not standout.

There are some fantastic songs on here, with Broken Drum probably being my favorite.

Beck is different music to what I thought it was! An enjoyable mash of styles.

28th August 2023 Listened during the day before going to the Prince Albert to meet parent crew. Couple of classics on here, Beck is a brilliant songwriter and musician.

Broken Drum is an eargasm of sound. Really solid album.

I listened to this one alot when it was first released. One of Beck’s better ones. Definitely one of his weirder experimental ones.

i liked. 8/10

cool album. Love Beck's range. His slow, singer songwriter stuff is amazing. His more electronic and pop oriented stuff is also great

My thoughts on this album are very similar to my thoughts on odelay in that it all sounds like beck but dabbles in a multitude of different genres, namely pop and electronic this time around. I liked this album about as much as odelay except in a completely different way given how different the music is. Broken drum was my favorite track and was an excellent memorial to elliott smith and go it alone and emergency exit were my other, more electronic-inspired favs.

Beck excels at a kind of cold, intellectual exploration of different genres, such as Hell Yes which was a highlight. Lots to like here.

The ever curious chameleon Beck reunited with The Dust Brothers for the second (and final) installment of their collaboration with Guero. While not as adventurous and innovative as Odelay, the trio's knack for obtaining strange sounds and wielding them into palatable shapes is still intact with Beck straying into more conventional territory whenever he would see fit. Guero proves itself to be not only a palate cleanser after the dour sadness of Sea Change but a valuable and worthwhile album in Beck's discography. Favorites: E-Pro, Que' Onda Guero, Girl, Black Tamborine, Earthquake Weather, Hell Yes, Scarecrow, Go It Alone, Farewell Ride.

Excellent, my new favorite (for now) Beck album.

I got to say, I really enjoyed this. Good Beck is good music.

Lekker bezig, die Beck!👍

Heerlijke plaat.

minne om matteårene mine og anders jr

I think this was the first Beck album I'd ever heard way back in my youth. Doesn't top Odelay, but made for pretty good listening

Dipped a little towards the end of the album personally but really enjoyed the album overall.

I thought I knew my Beck, but this album eluded me. I liked it! As others mentioned, shades of Odelay, but with some of the poppier sensibilities that were to come with Colors. Definitely one to return to.

Unique

I liked Beck more the later in his career he got. While I enjoyed the silly and weird albums, these later ones scratch an itch that no one else really can. This record is great. It's a mishmash of styles and it all works well togeather. Nothing sounds out of place because nothing is IN place. It's super fun.

Nice relaxing listen. Nothing mind-blowing, but it was very enjoyable. Would listen again.

suddenly I can't even utter a word to describe the genre of it maybe it's Beck

Surprised how much I like it. Strong all the way through

Sounds really good! First 2 tracks slide together with good energy. I remember liking this when it came out. Still holds up well! Beck being Beck. Always liked his flow and fun lyrics. Broken Drum is a nice surprise. Hits better than it would have for me 18 years ago. I’m going with a 4. It’s solid throughout!

I enjoyed it

Very cool! Funky, hip hop beats and slacker coolness. Everything you expect from Beck. Comparable to Oderlay and Midnight Vultures.

Beck has built a great career out of creating new soundscapes out of a wide variety of influences. Good job, Beck!

I did not realize how much Beck I really knew until I listened to this album.

Tracks 1 and 3 are absolute heaters. 3.5

Beck is one eclectic motherfucker.

AJ: cool dude with a loose mood. Believes in his weirdness and has perfected it.

Kind of hipster, but I love the meats and smooth sounds. I love his 2014 Morning Phase album and need to give more of his stuff a listen.

I don't really know much about Beck other than the fact that he really loves going all over the place with his genres. Guero does this, going from more grungy rock, to funk, to some alternative rock, a lot of hip hop influence, and even throwing in some chiptune on Girl. But more than anything, there's such a groove to a ton of songs on the album and I was just dancing around in my seat while working listening to this record. Que' Onda Guero has this just irresistible funky beat that feels like he's walking through with a boombox, same with Hell Yes as well, while E-Pro has that awesome crunchy distorted, heavy guitar and feels like a proper alt rock song. Hell of an album this is.

Hmmm, bit bemused by the inclusion of this one - it's Beck in the same mode as "Odelay" and "Odelay" is already on the list - kinda redundant? It's a fun enough listen, I guess, but doesn't benefit from the nostalgia bump his earlier stuff has for me. Fave tracks - "E-Pro" undeniably slaps. "Farewell Ride" is a nice example of more mellow Beck

listened

Beck is one of those weird creative geniuses that turns weird into gold, which says a lot for a Scientologist. 4/5.

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would.

Awesome album!

Really enjoyed this album

I didn’t expect to like this, but I did. Solid album.

Love Beck. Love all Beck.

I've tried very hard to get into Beck over the years and I find that I like his singles. His quirky nature doesn't work for me over a full album, but there are good songs here. I find it hard to separate this sonically from Odelay, so I would probably leave this album off the list. Overall, hearing this album makes me want to revisit Beck's work, which is a positive, but I'm still probably not a Beck album guy.

Wouldn’t you love to know what Beck is listening to at any given moment? He must have an incredible record collection. You can tell by the music he makes that he has very eclectic taste. This album is less manic than “Odelay,” which switches genres multiple times in a single song. “Guero” still covers a lot of musical ground but the various styles are fused together more. You get a Spanish guitar line, an old-school hip-hop beat and an electro-pop synth all at the same time. “Missing” stood out to me as a good example of the this. The production is modern, the best is sped-up bossa nova and those strings add a mysterious, romantic tone to the song. The opening three songs are excellent: the hard rocking “E-Pro,” the very quotable “Que’ Onda Guero” and the catchy pop of “Girl.” This album doesn’t quite reach the heights of “Odelay” but there are a bunch of great songs and a lot of interesting and surprising ones.

Hadn't heard much Beck, but enjoyed this album

Later era comeback dance breakup album, almost every song is listensable

Didn't necessarily love any one track but overall a solid effort.

Excited for this album. I remember E-Pro from Rockband 2 which, ironically, I played for this first time in a while yesterday. Earthquake Weather is fantastic. The vocals on Hell Yes sounds like a lot Cake song. MMM: I PUSH. I PULL. THE DAYS. GO SLOW.

yes please.

Solid One of becks better complete albums

Another great album!

The first and only Beck album I’ve ever gotten into

Another classic for younger me. I think the back half is a bit weaker but it was a fun revisit and still a strong album

Really good! Definitely one of Beck’s best albums. Some great songs on here, and no skips. Just a solid, really fun album all around.

L’album de Beck que j’ai le plus écouté dans ma vie. Ne ressemble à rien d’autre, très travaille tout en étant facile à écouter et à apprécier

good inspiration

Nice mix of songs, no huge stand outs but very pleasant Saved tracks: Girl, Scarecrow, Go It Alone, Rental Car

weird beck is the best kind of beck. this album is semi weird and conveniently for the listener beck has put all the good weird stuff at the beginning so you can fuck off the second half and only lose one song worth listening to.

Phenomenal

-first album i’ve gotten from an artist i’ve listened to before -LOVE beck -epro is a cool song -favorites: epro, hell yes, -beck has such a cool sound -love beck love his cool wacky ass sounds LOVE BECK! -hell yes was so cool -beck is amazing at what he does and i REALLY liked this album

Still sounds fresh even though familiar, loved it!

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.

Fantastico!

I was kind of ridiculed for thinking this was a good record back when it came out. Who's laughing now? MUHAHAHAHA

5/5 songs and 5/5 production. The performances are fine but like much of Beck's work there isn't much here to provide an emotional attachment that a 5/5 album has.

I don't think I ever listened to this whole album before. Rather enjoyed it.

Beck finest album

I like this a lot better than his album Sea Change, that I got about a week ago. Especially the first half. Favorite song: Black Tambourine.

great album. I generally like Beck's stuff.

Beck is such a strange fellow. I feel like his music ought not to work, not to be pleasant, but he pulls off quite the mishmash of styles with ease.

It’s Beck. Always a good listen.

Cool album. Beck absolutely influenced the modern music I like. There were a few tracks I'll revisit. The only thing keeping it from a full 5 is that I don't love his vocals oddly enough.

Great Beck!

i was familiar with a few of these songs from radio airplay, which i liked, so i was expecting good things, and i was not disappointed at all. hip hop beats and samples aplenty with enough bass to shake yo ass for days. beck’s voice is smooth and he seems perpetually laid back. he only seems to have one mode and that is relaxed, but with his music it works. great effort from this alt-rock king. highlights: “e-pro”, “black tambourine”, “hell yes”, “go it alone”.

I listened to this album when it came out and liked it a lot, It was in the regular rotation for a bit. Lost track of it over time and this brought me back. Great record, Beck rapping in Americanized Spanish notwithstanding. Broken Drum, Earthquake Weather, Go It Alone, E-Pro……Lotsa great stuff here.

A great record with only good vibes. Very nice, since I always associated Beck with more dramatic sounds

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: E-pro

Just when this album starts to bland out a bit, Go it Alone kicks in and redeems it. Still pretty impressive that more than a decade into his career, Beck was able to test out new styles and sounds while making a competent kick ass record.

Beck es bastante guay para ser un güero.

Some solid ones and as expected, lot's of little interesting jams.

Beck is a legend. I should listen to him more.

Hard to pin this one down. Good variety in sounds and pacing gives this album some staying power. Standouts: Que Onda Guero, Girl, Missing, Hell Yes 4

it's weird but its fucking interesting from start to finish. good album. I don't think I've ever heard it before in full

I actually think this is the first Beck where I get his whole "antifolk" thing, and I am on board.

Beck is a consistently four-star artist in my book, though in the context of the 1001 albums book Guero is more of a 3.5. It’s less groundbreaking than some of his other releases and not particularly focused - it’s a bit all over the place stylistically. E-Pro and Girl aside, I wouldn’t say it’s essential listening. Probably a bit lucky to make the cut, to be honest. But did I enjoy the grooves? Would I happily listen to it all again? Am I rounding up? Hell Yes.

I’ve been revisiting Beck lately. This is a funky, wide ranging album. I’d put this up there as one of the best Beck albums from start to finish. I have no problem listening to this over again. 4/5

This was pretty cool, some really cool sounds and 90’s drums. reminds me of soul coughing/mike doughty with some of the rap stuff. 3.5-4

I love the difference between each song. Really cool album.

Really good! Groovy, with a great mix of styles and influences

I absolutely adore Beck, but this is not my favorite by him. Some good songs, and not an unpleasant listen, but squarely in 4 territory for me.

I kind of enjoyed listening to this record while biking. It did nothing to pull me in and felt a tad long.

Some great moments. But sometimes he ruins potentially good songs with stupid ideas (the robot voice in hell yeah). 2nd song is a banger

Beck reunites with the Dust Brothers and makes an album that feels like a return to Odelay's sound. There are fewer ideas and sounds explored here, and it feel more traditional in that way. Oddly, I think that makes it a better album. Not only are the songs more immediate, but the hip hop influence feels more authentic, or at least the groove of hip hop is better preserved. You can sit back and relax to these dusty songs, whereas on Odelay something is always changing. This is a blessing and a curse of course - the lack of spectacular ideas limits the heights the album gets too. As much fun as "Qué onda guero" is, it kind of just reminds me of "Loser." And by the end the album is kind of coasting. Despite the fact it won't blow you away, it's a fun album.

While Beck is a weirdo man stinky boy poo-poo pants. This album is fun. How about a 7/10 for my time.

Decent highs, but a lot that's just fine (albeit still interesting).

A solid and unique album from one of the most creative artists out there, Guero is a darker, more soulful Beck than prior entities. It's consistent and cohesive in its sound, but like all Beck, has a lot of twists, turns, and curve balls to make listenthroughs not monotonous. All in all, a fun alt rock album but largely forgettable.

This is the album I had in my music library, though I’m not positive I ever listened to the full thing through. It has a strong start and I definitely appreciate Beck as an artist. Good listen and opportunity to revisit.

...Not my thing.

We enjoyed. Not best Beck but we still enjoyed and were surprised to encounter it.

Sometimes he be doin too much but I f with it

I think there's better in his catalogue, doesn't feel that cohesive but certainly isn't bad

I liked this but wouldn't listen to it all the time. Love the different styles and the constant latin influence throughout. Fave song: E-Pro

Pretty good! Some interesting sounds in here.

I actually enjoyed this, tho I'm not a huge fan o Beck. Certainly better than the first album.

First track feels like it was written for adverts. I generally quite like Beck's music but this opener did make me feel like buying a Toyota or something. From there the album just sort of drifts past - nothing offended me, nothing really excited me. Not his strongest album. 2.5

Nice. I enjoy Beck even if I had only reapply heard closer before this. Lots of interesting music choices instruments and sounds

this is sooooo 2005 listening to XFM lounging about in my teenage bedroom doing my homework and writing in my diary vibes. i can't explain it. i was just taken straight back there. it was nice.

Not bad but a bit samey

Reminded me a lot of gorillaz's debut

Good album. Didn’t really do anything super exciting but it’s too solid to give it lower than 3.

I find Beck a bit frustrating. This is the 3rd album I've had from him on this journey. Loved Sea Change, Odelay not so much. This album is a bit all over the place, with some decent tracks and some not so great.

Big Beck fan here so I'm a little biased. That said, this is a really good album, even thought it may not be Beck's best. Earthquake Weather is a banger.

I enjoyed it more than I was expecting to.

One of those where the songs I knew seemed to be far and away the best ones. Everyone else wasn't too bad.

One of the better Beck albums imo

Beck the guy that's playing with different genres on his albums. That's always nice to hear. So this album isn't a disappointment. Like most of his releases. 3.5/5 (for me) 3/5 (on this site)

Easy listening

I'd never heard of this artist before. I liked the album--3 stars

E-Pro is totally electric and definitely my fav on the album. I don’t think the rest really called to me as much.

This kind of left no impression on me except a lightly good. A true 2.5 but need to listen again for an accurate rating. I remember there were one or two songs I liked but maybe I was distracted. Typical Beck fare but on the less dynamic side I wanna say.

Guero is perhaps, above all else, a very successful realization of "Alternative" music. Alternative is vague, almost frustratingly so, but if someone asked you to define it, you could do *way* worse than spinning Guero. Beck takes indie's idiosyncratic qualities, and fuses them with a non-commital mix of rock, pop, hip-hop, electronic, downtempo, country, and Latin music. And the strength of Beck's songwriting holds it all together. I will say that this does not feel like it really gels together as an "album statement", but it *does* still work as a great collection of songs. Beck covers a lot of ground with his influences here, but this whole album does manage to invoke a chill, summery kind of fun. There are also unfortunately some songs here that feel kind of tacky, or badly aged. I think this is most apparent on Que' Onda Guero, and Hell Yes. But, conversely, a song like Farewell Ride feels like it should have aged badly, but it didn't. I don't think Guero is perfect by any means, but it is still a lot of fun, and has a bunch of really great songs.

You know what Beck, you're alright

Perfectly acceptable mid-period Beck!

Helt ok! Gillade Black Tambourine bäst. Jag har inte lyssnat på Beck på åratal så det var lite kul att återupptäcka detta album.

Пару песен норм, остальное ну такоое

A couple good songs.

not bad, not good

Decent

Enjoyable

This was a good first real impression of Beck, though I would say he walked straight down the middle of the road on this project. I enjoyed the Latin additions on the album towards the beginning, but it petered out a bit towards the end.

I'd rate it a 3.5/5. Missing is the best song on the album. I am kind of confused about where the influence came from, but it's not bad.

lotsa slide - idk it's pretty good

an interesting counterpoint to Demon Days as a trip hop/alt rock/alt hip hop fusion album from 2005. while Demon Days is loaded with collaborators, Beck did a lot of stuff himself. and this is a lot weirder and less commercial too. it's fun enough for the genrefuckery but i don't see myself returning soon. on the second track he says "James Joyce" as an adlib. deserves to be one of the 1001? i think you can nix this one but even if you're dead set on having 3 Beck albums, Mellow Gold is the better option

Standard Beck. An eclectic mix with some brilliant tracks and some misses. E- pro and missing are fantastic.

Honestly I have heard 1 of Becks song Colors which is a bop, and I think I’m in love and I never actually listen to a full album of his so gonna be interesting. Damn we got a song in Spanish? And it bops, okay beck I see you. Especially that chorus is an ear worm. Omg 8 bit song start in Girl yippee!! songs I like from this album so far: Que’ Onda Guero and Black Tambourine, Hell Yes, Go It Alone Context: in Hell Yes the music video featured them from the about the song section just found out what QRIO bots were and they are so cute

There were as many songs I disliked vs liked. Generous 3.

Cheesy, corny , pretty bad lyrics, but I loved this record when it came out . Pretty great production, three stars for that and nostalgia

Good late career Beck

It was an enjoyable, though ultimately forgettable, listen - with some high points

Started strongly, faded away and I stop paying much attention, which probably means it’s a 3.5 rounded down.

Unique

I've always enjoyed this record, but I just remembered why I never really listened to the back half of it.

Twas aight

I thought this album was nice

A bit confused about this album. I started a bit skeptical, than had great great time, and that- not so much. Generally, the first half contains the best songs here, with some incredible bangers such as 2, 3 , 4 and 6. All great songs with incredible production aswell. From there, unfortunately, you get songs that are more basic ideas embellished with heavy production. Some work well, some really don't. I'll give it a very flat 3 because I want to keep good energy and because of sea change

Plein de trucs pas dégueu, mais rien de très bien

6/10 A lot of interesting sounds. Good groove if someone likes gentle rock with trip hop elements. Unfortunately I am not that person :P

This album felt somewhat scattered despite its variety of styles, which reflects Beck’s wide-ranging musical sensibility. E-Pro stood out in particular for me, with its strong, riff-driven groove making the biggest impression.

Standouts E-Pro Girl Black Tambourine

Está bueno sin embargo hay una canción en específico que no me gustó

Mind if a white boy speak a little spanish? Forgot how good E-Pro is

A joyful and fun record for sure, but ultimately a toned down version of the highs of Odelay.

This is one of those albums I really like but I don't love. It's groovy, and fun, and has some really excellent moments ("E-Pro" and "Broken Drum" especially) but I can't help feeling like I should like it more than I do. I don't know. THREE STARS

Offers insight into his musical influences and his ability to mash up styles

Its definitely got a unique mix of sounds. Very quirky but honestly nothing really up my alley

What you see is what you get here. Mid 2000’s Beck album, plenty of quirky musical ideas with Beck’s somewhat deadpan, instantly recognizable delivery. “E-Pro” felt a bit like a rehashing of what made “Loser” such a hit. I did really like Que’ Onda Guero though. Very funky, silly story over a chunky beat. I was so sure I was listening to the voice of Chris Cornell, not Beck, on “Missing”. Speaking on musical connections, “Earthquake Weather” sounds so much like an early Gorillaz song. Hazy and textured, rinsed with a slight raggae/dub quality to it. “Broken Drum” is pretty powerful. The little guitar melody that bookends every little stanza is so sticky. “Go It Alone” is just as sticky too. This is close to a 4/5 for me, and I wouldn’t blame you for giving it that score, but I’m just not super blown away by Beck’s voice. It sometimes felt too cumbersome and hampered down some otherwise cool production choices. Solid 3/5

it's sort of interesting, but nothing really captivated me or stood out to me in this album. doesn't seem very cohesive, at least musically

A few great tracks on here but some snoozers. Love the blend of styles while still holding on to the early beck sound. It was One Foot In The Grave washed in 90s pop, with pinches of psych, electronic and hip hop. Not my favorite beck record but not a bad one!

I have to admit that I wasn't expecting to enjoy this album all so much, based on the previous album by Beck, 'Sea Change'. I saw so many good reviews towards that album, praising the emotional change of sound, but I wasn't a huge fan... That is why this album was a slight surprise to me. Some of the songs just had fun, and I was all for it. The instrumentation is definitely experimental and fun, giving you something new with each song. My only thing with this album, which I wasn't such a fan of, was it seemed to go on for a bit too long. Yes, the songs were fun at the start, but after a while it got slightly tiring. Maybe this album wasn't made to be listened to top to bottom, but either way, it feels like one of those where you should listen to a couple at a time and then go back to it later on, which I ended up having to do. I did, however, absolutely love 'Que' Onda Guero' and I have added it to a few of my playlists. Favourites: Que' Onda Guero Hell Yes Girl (purely for the instrumentation)

A widely eclectic record. Not a lot of really great songs, and what is this, the third Beck record already? It’s alright, but we definitely didn’t need another Beck record.

Good musician

Great one from Beck. Sonically always on point and this one is as diverse as his albums usually are.
