Nina Simone is a stupendous singer. There are some amazingly beautiful songs on here. A masterclass in musical minimalism. However, it’s not something I want to listen to with any regularity. Life is already hard enough and as much as I don’t mind ordinarily being sucked into a vortex of misery, this is not my bubbling tar pit of choice.

Damn. I knew her name, but this was my introduction to Nina Simone, and she's intense in all the best ways. There's a sadness and depth to her voice that gives every note added weight. Anger and vulnerability. I don't know if those are the right descriptors, but in the same way Billie Holiday infuses every song with significance just because she's singing it, Nina Simone has that same effect. "Four Women" is powerful, "Lilac Wine" sounds like it could have been in Twin Peaks, but "Wild Is The Wind" was something else. I was familiar with Bowie's take on the song, which I always liked, but all those descriptors — sadness, depth, vulnerability — were on hyperdrive in her performance, buttressed by the manic piano. Crazy that the wind is howling outside as I write. Her voice, that piano, the wind chimes outside my window... it's all coalescing. My head just exploded. Happy now?

I don’t think there’s any doubting how incredible Nina Simone is. Apparently this album was made up of songs that didn’t make previous albums! Quite amazing. I’m a big passing fan of Nina Simone, if that exists. Like I’ve listened to her a lot but mainly her bigger songs and albums, rather than a proper listen like this. Even the songs that sometimes don’t hit like others still have this pain in her voice. Kinda forces you to stop and listen. Her voice is like no other I’ve ever heard, and for use of a better term, she’s versatile as fuck. She covers blues, soul, jazz, pop… chuck in her gospel roots and it just works so well. I Love Your Lovin Ways, Break Down and Let it All Out, and Black is the Colour of my True Loves hair were my favourites, but I think most songs caught my attention in different ways.

I wasn't too shocked to read that this is a kind of compilation album as each song is in different style. Luckily, Nina Simone's range is incredible enough that this doesn't matter too much. Superb vocals saves songs that are slightly lacking.

No one brings a song to a climax quite like Nina. Fun fact, she attended the Juiliard for piano NOT singing!

There are three Nina Simone songs that are all-timers for me - Feeling Good, Strange Fruit, and Mississippi Goddam. I've never done a deep dive of her stuff, but I know that I've heard plenty through samples in other people's music - Four Women, for instance. But she is one performer who always sounds like the truth and every song she sings is an experience. It's a world to itself. And this album is a great example of that. First time I've heard this one, and I'll call this five stars.

The source material here is a bit variable in quality, but no matter - Nina Simone is such a compelling presence that she can spin gold from yarn. As an aside, has there been a more arresting vocalist who worked within the popular genres? Perhaps Billie Holiday, maybe Scott Walker, and there's a case to be made for early Elvis. Simone is top of the tree. Highlights here are 'Lilac Wine' and the brutal, stark 'Four Women'.

This album is really, really, really good! I love how dark and melancholy Nina's voice is. Also, can we talk about the piano on this album??! Amazing. My favorite songs on this album were Four Women and Lilac Wine.

Nina Simone is a fascinating artist and this is a fascinating album. The album has the seeds if Simone's political activism which would flower later in her career. With Four Women being the obvious example. But the album also has pretty effective blues songs that show off her powerful voice and unique delivery. A compelling listen that is a good cross section of styles. 4 stars

Absolutely incredible vocals. A lot of feeling in so many songs some of them I didn't love but this is one of the greatest voices in recorded music history

There is a darker tinge to this album than there was to Pastel Blue. "Four Women," "Lilac Wine," and "That's All I Ask" are definitely highlights.

Powerful and haunting. The straight-up blues of the opener is great, followed by the harrowing and novelistic. “Four Women.” “That’s All I Ask” and “Either Way I Lose” are both very strong. Much comes down to how one feels about her voice. This is a tour de force of singing, with believable and compelling performances ranging from deep vulnerability and tenderness to outright rage and despair and bitterness.

Wonderful enigmatic voice that rises above the accompanying music, sometimes obviously so. I prefer Nina Simone when she's angrier but I do love this album and her voice and arrangements.

It feels nice to sit down with a Nina album. Certainly some great stuff on here but Lilac Wine stands out for me today.

What an amazing woman. Just seeped into my mind and body, her voice and her piano. Four classics but only one song written by her which is a suprise. Those were the days I guess.

A strong voice and a great singer!

Nina Simone's unique voice and fusion of jazz piano with more maybe Blues? Inspireret sound makes for a quite delightful album. She has a way of drawing you in with her voice and the it definitely grew on me (initially her deeper voice almost sounds manlike). Standouts are Four Women, describing how women with different skin colours at different times have been oppressed, and the sad Lilac Wine

Overall I liked this, but honestly I am shocked that a) Nina Simone has only one album in the top 1000, and b) that album is not Pastel Blues. I mean, if only for Sinnerman....or Strange Fruit. I think there are a few albums could be cut from the list and make for this and Pastel Blues. Both albums, recorded in the 60s still resonate and sound fresh today.

A classic album by a great songstress.

I have yet to find a Nina Simone album that I haven't liked. And yet, with a nod to Alan Partridge and his favourite Beatles album, I tend to find myself just going back to "The Best of Nina Simone"

Nina's leftovers are way better than many others' first-choice albums.

I own plenty of soul records, but I somehow have yet to buy any Nina Simone. Should really rectify that. This would be a good one to start with, since it has some of her best performances. I can understand how her husky voice is not for everyone, but I admire how raw and commanding she sounds. Not every song is a banger, and some parts drag, but this is still damn fine stuff. B

Simone’s utterly fascinating vocals had me completely ignoring the instrumentals, which, on subsequent listens really came to fruition as a powerful complement. The soft touch of the keys behind her vibrato on “If I Should Lose You” into the climax is *chefs kiss*. Combined with Simone’s interesting lyrics? We got a stew goin’ here… The arrangements are also really great, from the orchestral to the jazzy to the pop, Wild is the Wind resides in an interesting overlap of styles without feeling incoherent or lacking. 4

This album is magical. I guess it's jazz adjacent, but it sounds like its own thing. Her vocals are strong, real, and passionate. Four Women, especially is a stand out example of Simone's talent, ability, and presence. Break Down and Let it All Out is also great!

There are very few wonders of the world that can match Nina Simone's all-encompassing voice. Full of melancholy beauty from the lyrics brought to life by her stellar performance, Wild Is The Wind is likely her definitive work, and it deserves that title. The accompanying piano on most of these spare, stripped-down tracks perfectly matches her. A great album with some slight filler.

Ero partito un po' prevenuto con questo disco avendo visto l'anno e sentendo il primo pezzo. Conoscevo Nina Simone solo di nome (sicuramente avrò sentito qualche suo pezzo in giro). Mi sono sicuramente dovuto ricredere, questo album mi è arrivato molto e l'ho trovato molto autentico. Questo jazz '60 malinconico alla Julie London mi conquista abbastanza in generale ma la voce di Nina Simone è davvero particolare, molto espressiva ed estremamente tecnica (come spesso era all'epoca). I pezzi hanno tutti un qualche elemento che li caratterizza a livello compositivo o di arrangiamento e devo dire che i 38 minuti sono volati. Un 4 pieno.

This is not particularly my thing (I'm not enamored with jazz vocalists overall), but I think it's good. There's something ineffable about her voice and the lyrics she conveys. Big fan of Nina Simone's style. I first heard of her back in the late 1980s. She had a hit song, "My Baby Just Cares for Me" when I was living in Europe. I had no idea it was an "old" song at the time. I never heard of her. Then I realized that I had an LP of her's that I got in a box of LPs I found at a garage sale. The Album was "Baltimore". Not one of her best, but had a couple of very good, likable songs. I started listening more to her, but had never really listened to this album until now. Stand Outs: Four Women Wild is the Wind

Oh boy. I like Nina Simone, but I've only listened to under 50% of her discography - so it's great to add another album to my collection. Got to say, this is a weird choice as the ONLY Simone album on the 1001 list. Why not Little Girl Blue, High Priestess of Soul, or Nina Simone Sings the Blues - all three of which are more iconic? Wild is the Wind seems to be a collection of leftover tracks from other album sessions, and was out of print for many years. Having said that, it's really good! The style range from folk to blues to soul to jazz. Mostly ballads, but a few upbeat tracks. Love songs sit alongside tales of suffering. All held together by her smouldering voice with its dramatic flare. It might be a little miscellaneous, but it's certainly a good sampler of her talent.

Nina Simone is a master of words, summoning vivid imagery and commanding you hear them with her soulful voice. The band is simply there to reinforce these things, but that's not to downplay their role! Everything works together in wonderful tandem to set a high bar for vocal jazz and soul music. Simone has one of the greatest voices, doing these songs great justice. The only complaint is that the hard-hitting songs on here (Four Women, Wild is the Wind) are watered down by the more forgettable ones, making the album weaker as a whole.

Arguably behind Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan in jazz singing terms but still an amazing artist. Couple of songs fell flat for me but Four Women alone will earn this a solid score

When it comes to older music, this is what I like. Much better than Tex and the Sad Cowboys chasing tiger tails. Nina sings with such heart and has such a strong presence just in the microphone. I liked some songs more than others but having never listened to one of her albums before (only singles) I can say I really enjoyed this. I also love the album cover, the hot pink really sticks out.

Wow, coming full circle with Nina Simone. Our very first album on this list, Station to Station, featured Bowie's cover of "Wild is the Wind," and here we are at the source (well not exactly, but a source for Bowie's cover). We also heard Jeff Buckley's cover of "Lilac Wine," which I didn't realize until today. Nina Simone has one of the most haunting, affecting voices to ever grace a mic. She can communicate levels of pain you never knew were possible. So many tracks on here that stop me in my tracks. Loved hearing "Four Women," sampled by Jay-Z and later, to devastating effect, by Pusha T. And the title track is such a powerful song, made more moving by Nina's lyrical revisions: "You touch me, I hear the sound of mandolins. You kiss me, with your kiss my life begins." I still think I prefer the structure and composition of the Cat Power cover, but Nina's voice is undeniable. Loved this one. Favorite tracks: Wild is the Wind, Four Women, Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Lilac Wine. Album art: Nothing crazy, but the pink and black color combo is one of the best. The font and art style definitely put this in the '60s, but it feels timeless. 4.5/5

Nina Simone has such an expressive voice and tells stories to powerfully. I was expecting a lot from this album, and was expecting more than I got somehow. But after listening to the album a couple times I realized that part of what makes these songs special is their depth - I could probably listen 100 times and still have something to learn from them.

Her voice sounds old. You really feel like she's going through some shit. It took a second listening for me to recognize that a lot of the instrumentation was pretty modern. Some of it, like WKOBMH, sounds kinda movie score-ish, which is cool, but there are neat guitar riffs, Cool drum pieces, and even some cool showtune harmonies. A Four Women vége lenyűgöző (Stars flashbackek, khm, Bojack Horseman), pláne kombinálva a What more can I say-jel, majd a Lilac Wine közölte, mennyire iszonyatosan változatos lesz ez az egész lemez. Break down and let it all out annyira energikus, Nina hangja mindent elvisz, csak sajnos kicsit túl hirtelen lesz vége. Why keep on breaking my heart kimondottan gyenge, a címadó dal áriázása sem illik a fejemben Nina Simonéről kialakult képhez, viszont ennek ellenére megmutatja, mennyire sokszínű és sokműfajú tud lenni. Mondjuk a Black is the colour of my true love's hair cégére már szeretnék visszatérni a Break Down energikusságához. A legutolsó dal talán kicsit visszahozott belőle, de összességében a lemez második fele csalódás. Ennek ellenére így is került több dal is a csillagozott listámra.

I think this is an album a lot of people can enjoy. A powerful voice making powerful songs, great album 8/10

Clearly a talent but man her voice is masculine. But I’m gonna give her 4 stars. It was great music don’t live her voice. Actually no. I’m not giving in. I don’t like her voice. This would be 3.5 stars and I’m rounding down. Need something amazing next.

This is a really good vocal and piano-jazz record. Her voice is undeniable. It is one of those albums that should be heard by everyone and really belongs on the 1001 albums you must hear before you die.

Når det er bluesete mister hu meg, men når det er soul er det fint. Lilac Wine er dritfin, men kanskje enda bedre av Jeff Buckley.

Wow… this album gets pretty heavy lyrically at times. I can only imagine the controversy some tracks like Four Women caused when they came out. I could definitely come back to it, but probably more as background music, because I have quite a few issues with it. Nina Simone’s voice doesn’t always work for me, especially on tracks like Why Keep on Breaking My Heart or Wild Is the Wind, which are also among the least interesting here. I wish the slightly rockier vibe of I Love Your Lovin’ Ways had shown up more often, because by the end, all the ballads and love songs start to lose me. Definitely not my favourite Nina Simone’s album, Silk and soul the next year is more my kind of vibe. I much prefer her when things get more soul and jazzy, like the last track on this one which I enjoyed quite a lot.

no doubt a good album, but just not for me. songs all sounded the same. instrumentation and support was rather flat as well.

She can sing any genre and the boldness of her lyrics, especially 4 women was striking.

All the songs sounded the same to me tbh, but great vocals.

Heard of Nina Simone, but don’t think I’ve ever listened to her. Something different today again. The opening song is more of a blues r&b sound. Fun. Follows up with some ballads. Her voice is distinctive and great. Four Women wow that is a hell of a song. Wonderful showcase of vocals and just a storytelling song. Some of the jazz ballads are more straightforward. Some soulful songs. All dominated by her voice. All very solid. Really enjoying a few of these songs. Enjoyed Break Down and Let it All Out. It does feel to lose the variety toward the later half of the album, as it settles into more jazz tunes. I will say this is a 3.

I would have picked other albums by this dynamic artist

Bastante flojo

A musician with an incredibly distinctive voice, style, and mood whose works I haven't dug into nearly as much as I should have by this point. The majority of tracks on here have a particular kind of slow, roiling, uneasy quality that seems like her preferred mode; I think it's the kind of thing where I have to be in the right mood to fully meet her where she's at. Autumnal music.

Sorry man I appreciate that there are talented people behind this album but I just do not care for vocal jazz stuff like this at all.

Couple of good songs. Great voice. Don't feel strongly about this one.

Wild is the Wind is a really soulful album. I gravitated to the more uptempo swinging songs. The instruments are played wonderfully. It's a very good album, but I wouldn't call it high energy by any means. Standout tracks to me were "I Love Your Lovin' Ways" "Wild is the Wind" - the piano is phenominal - and "Either Way I Lose." I was a bit torn on this rating; some of the songs were excellent but I'm probably not going to go seeking this out again. It was a nice experience though. I think it's one of those rare cases where I should probably give it a 4 for the lyrics, emotion, and that insanely well done piano, but if I'm honest, its a strong 3 for me. I could listen to that all day, though, but the album as a whole isn't really my thing.

Amazing voice of course, felt a little one note for me, lilac wine is a really great song. Just learned that this album is made up of different songs throughout her career, makes sense why it felt all the same-ish.

I wanted to like this album more than I did. Nina Simone has an amazing voice and her piano is beautiful. The lyrics are meaningful, but the song's feel all over the place. You can kinda tell this is a collection of leftover songs. Yesterday I was leaning towards a 4, but today I'm leaning towards a 3. I think I'm going with a 3 because I do forget most of the songs already. I should really give this a relisten.

I love her voice. This isn't my favorite Nina Simone album, but it was a solid one. It would have been cool to see her perform live.

The whole time I was listening to this album I was thinking I have never heard a voice like this before. It was hauntingly beautiful, I will say though I listened to her other albums and I liked them quite a lot. I just didnt like this one as much

This is was a good album. It was cool to hear samples I recognized and you can tell she had a very big impact on the music world. The only thing I didn’t like is that some of the tracks were very dry and uninteresting. My favorite songs were the ones that had vibrant piano and passionate vocals. She also sounds like a guy sometimes not gonna lie.

Never listened to much of Nina Simone's music. Pretty good album.

Four Women was super interesting

Didn't finish. Absolutely unique vocals, but they don't always work well. Some songs are amazing, and some are just howling.

Nice voice, nice music, but I did not enjoy this enough, at least not in the context of breakfast music.

I really liked Track 1 and the rest of the Songs were good, but I dont think I would really listen to them. Some of the Songs (eG Track 2) I didnt really enjoy. Especially because the rhythm and melody stay consistent.

Today I learnt that Bowie's Wild is the Wind was a Nina Simone cover!

On the whole an enjoyable album. I did prefer Johnny Mathis version of, "Wild Is The Wind" though. I didn't like the extra, and what I considered unnecessary, vocalization that Nina used in the song. Listening to this album reminded me of how much I love piano music.

Very good blues album from a legendary artist. However, for my personal taste it doesn't do too much for me. Jeff Buckely's Lilac Wine being a cover by Nina was new too me, so that was neat to learn.

Great! Preferred the first half to second half. Lilac Wine and I Love Your Lovin' Ways both standouts.

Unable to listen today due to being on holiday with very poor reception, but home tomorrow so I will listen then as I'm sure this is excellent.

Nina Simone is a beast. There are some monster tracks on here like “Four Women” but the record doesn’t flow as effortlessly for me
