Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Great album. It is classic jazz; not my favorite genre.
Little rough, woman can sing though and the lyrics are powerful and strong. They seem very important racially.
Really enjoyed this one and always wanted to check it out
Feels very true to her.
Heartbreaking.
Break Down And Let It All Out по вокалу напомнило Call My Name Вана Моррисона.
Lovely
Oh boy. I like Nina Simone, but I've only listened to under 50% of her discography - so it's great to add another album to my collection. Got to say, this is a weird choice as the ONLY Simone album on the 1001 list. Why not Little Girl Blue, High Priestess of Soul, or Nina Simone Sings the Blues - all three of which are more iconic? Wild is the Wind seems to be a collection of leftover tracks from other album sessions, and was out of print for many years. Having said that, it's really good! The style range from folk to blues to soul to jazz. Mostly ballads, but a few upbeat tracks. Love songs sit alongside tales of suffering. All held together by her smouldering voice with its dramatic flare. It might be a little miscellaneous, but it's certainly a good sampler of her talent.
Classic!
Her voice grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go until she’s finished saying what she needs to say. And what she has to say is overwhelming. A beautiful album, heartbreaking and wonderful.
A wonderful voice and occasionally the cliche of an album “taking you somewhere” is true, no more so in this case
A wonderful voice and occasionally the cliche of an album “taking you somewhere” is true, no more so in this case
Good but a bit wharbly in places
great
Mooie nummers met veel emotie gebracht. Erg rustgevende muziek
One of the greats. If you don't like her, you don't like music. Mix of blues, soul and jazz. BT: I Love Your Lovin' Ways, Lilac Wine, Wild Is The Wind
Nina Simone is a master of words, summoning vivid imagery and commanding you hear them with her soulful voice. The band is simply there to reinforce these things, but that's not to downplay their role! Everything works together in wonderful tandem to set a high bar for vocal jazz and soul music. Simone has one of the greatest voices, doing these songs great justice. The only complaint is that the hard-hitting songs on here (Four Women, Wild is the Wind) are watered down by the more forgettable ones, making the album weaker as a whole.
Arguably behind Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan in jazz singing terms but still an amazing artist. Couple of songs fell flat for me but Four Women alone will earn this a solid score
I really like this. Wasn't expecting to.
Powerful.
Love it
powerful, deep, and energetic. Super good album, but towards the end there were a bit more questionable songs
Buen disco de Soul
Nina Simone is acclaimed for a reason
When it comes to older music, this is what I like. Much better than Tex and the Sad Cowboys chasing tiger tails. Nina sings with such heart and has such a strong presence just in the microphone. I liked some songs more than others but having never listened to one of her albums before (only singles) I can say I really enjoyed this. I also love the album cover, the hot pink really sticks out.
Imacilate vibes Molly is wrong
A good blues with a great voice is always welcomed
3.9* very soulful album, a few songs were sampled in other songs throughout the years including the story of oj by jay z
Wow, coming full circle with Nina Simone. Our very first album on this list, Station to Station, featured Bowie's cover of "Wild is the Wind," and here we are at the source (well not exactly, but a source for Bowie's cover). We also heard Jeff Buckley's cover of "Lilac Wine," which I didn't realize until today. Nina Simone has one of the most haunting, affecting voices to ever grace a mic. She can communicate levels of pain you never knew were possible. So many tracks on here that stop me in my tracks. Loved hearing "Four Women," sampled by Jay-Z and later, to devastating effect, by Pusha T. And the title track is such a powerful song, made more moving by Nina's lyrical revisions: "You touch me, I hear the sound of mandolins. You kiss me, with your kiss my life begins." I still think I prefer the structure and composition of the Cat Power cover, but Nina's voice is undeniable. Loved this one. Favorite tracks: Wild is the Wind, Four Women, Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Lilac Wine. Album art: Nothing crazy, but the pink and black color combo is one of the best. The font and art style definitely put this in the '60s, but it feels timeless. 4.5/5
Smoky jazz club vibes - I was unfamiliar with most of these songs, so that was a bonus! Fave track - "Four Women" - powerful stuff, great crescendo!
Stunning voice, a pleasure to listen to. Especially loved 'Wild is the Wind'. I do wonder why this record is on the list but not one with more of her hits like 'I put a spell on you'.
super d'atmosfera. adatto in certi momenti. lento lento lento. altri tempi
cool cool cool
Nina Simone has such an expressive voice and tells stories to powerfully. I was expecting a lot from this album, and was expecting more than I got somehow. But after listening to the album a couple times I realized that part of what makes these songs special is their depth - I could probably listen 100 times and still have something to learn from them.

I Love Your Lovin' Ways Four Women What More Can I Say? Break Down and Let It All Out
Her voice sounds old. You really feel like she's going through some shit. It took a second listening for me to recognize that a lot of the instrumentation was pretty modern. Some of it, like WKOBMH, sounds kinda movie score-ish, which is cool, but there are neat guitar riffs, Cool drum pieces, and even some cool showtune harmonies. Favorite Songs: Four Women What more can I say - My slow song of choice for this album. Lilac Wine Break Down and Let it All out Why Keep on Breaking My Heart
Great, diverse album. Good blues, R&B, amazing vocals. Great intro into Nina for me
Surprisingly clean and modern sound. Perfect background sound for a dinner wirh family and friends.
I would like to listen again when paying closer attention. Some fun songs and some good ballets.
Első dal után kicsit sablonos jazz albumnak gondoltam, ami a második szám első felében is megmaradt. Aztán... A Four Women vége lenyűgöző (Stars flashbackek, khm, Bojack Horseman), pláne kombinálva a What more can I say-jel, majd a Lilac Wine közölte, mennyire iszonyatosan változatos lesz ez az egész lemez. Break down and let it all out annyira energikus, Nina hangja mindent elvisz, csak sajnos kicsit túl hirtelen lesz vége. Why keep on breaking my heart kimondottan gyenge, a címadó dal áriázása sem illik a fejemben Nina Simonéről kialakult képhez, viszont ennek ellenére megmutatja, mennyire sokszínű és sokműfajú tud lenni. Mondjuk a Black is the colour of my true love's hair cégére már szeretnék visszatérni a Break Down energikusságához. A legutolsó dal talán kicsit visszahozott belőle, de összességében a lemez második fele csalódás. Ennek ellenére így is került több dal is a csillagozott listámra.
What a voice. Damn this album is decent even though I don't like Jazz that much.
Soothing and beautiful
Beautiful voice, very nice production.
I liked this album a lot and this one makes sense as to why it it on the list. Will have to dig deeper into her extensive catalog.
What a voice.
Nina Simone was a gift to the Earth and we didn't deserve her. MY NAME IS PEACHES. RIP Queen. Hopefully this isn't the only Nina album on this list.
Very emotional
<3
Decent album but a very passionate and emotional delivery
beautiful!!
I think this is an album a lot of people can enjoy. A powerful voice making powerful songs, great album 8/10
A gravação pela época, me impressionou bastante.
Calmo, envolvente e melancólico. 8.5/10
Surprisingly good!
The whole time I was listening to this album I was thinking I have never heard a voice like this before. It was hauntingly beautiful, I will say though I listened to her other albums and I liked them quite a lot. I just didnt like this one as much
This is was a good album. It was cool to hear samples I recognized and you can tell she had a very big impact on the music world. The only thing I didn’t like is that some of the tracks were very dry and uninteresting. My favorite songs were the ones that had vibrant piano and passionate vocals. She also sounds like a guy sometimes not gonna lie.
Never listened to much of Nina Simone's music. Pretty good album.
Guy needs to stop vibrating voice 2.5 out of 5 not my style
Amazing voice but this was just a nice album
Lilac Wine
3.5 - good album. Started off great then kinda wore out
Baby's first jazz album. It's good but it takes absolutely 0 risks.
In the words of Hozier, Nina cried power.
Lively, classic
Good
Four Women was super interesting
Didn't finish. Absolutely unique vocals, but they don't always work well. Some songs are amazing, and some are just howling.
Nice voice, nice music, but I did not enjoy this enough, at least not in the context of breakfast music.
I really liked Track 1 and the rest of the Songs were good, but I dont think I would really listen to them. Some of the Songs (eG Track 2) I didnt really enjoy. Especially because the rhythm and melody stay consistent.
Decent
Today I learnt that Bowie's Wild is the Wind was a Nina Simone cover!
On the whole an enjoyable album. I did prefer Johnny Mathis version of, "Wild Is The Wind" though. I didn't like the extra, and what I considered unnecessary, vocalization that Nina used in the song. Listening to this album reminded me of how much I love piano music.
Beautiful with a distinct mood but ultimately song writing doesn’t click with me as much as I’d please
pleasant enough, kinda passed me by
Był fajny
...
Generally not my style, but Nina Simone is obviously a great singer
Enjoyed listening to this album and learning more about the songs, artist, and influence.
You might be the sweetest, juiciest peach in the world. But at the end of the day, some prime just don’t like peaches… Dolly Parton, talking about my affinity for jazz
she really did cry power. the kind of voice that makes you believe in god (female)!
I didn’t expect to like it so much jazz is not my usual. Calming I’d like to sample
Very good blues album from a legendary artist. However, for my personal taste it doesn't do too much for me. Jeff Buckely's Lilac Wine being a cover by Nina was new too me, so that was neat to learn.
Great! Preferred the first half to second half. Lilac Wine and I Love Your Lovin' Ways both standouts.
Unable to listen today due to being on holiday with very poor reception, but home tomorrow so I will listen then as I'm sure this is excellent.
Nina Simone is a beast. There are some monster tracks on here like “Four Women” but the record doesn’t flow as effortlessly for me
Kinda serious - Good, but serious
Quite the talent.
I mean this is a good album but nothing that really excites me. Nina's voice is classic and amazing but none of the songs really grab me.
Great voice. Kinda unrelatable songs for me...
Extra cred till Lilac wine och Wilde is the wind.
Just don't like vocal jazz that much, great version of Lilac Wine tho
liked it alot very nice lilac wine
Heard this one before, I quite like it
It's a very good album. Not really my style though. All songs are solid and the singing is obviously very good. I'm having some doubts between 3 and 4 stars. But, if I'm being honest to my personal taste, this is a perfectly solid 3-star album.
Good soulful album with stellar singing.
I prefer rock but the Soul, jazz blues R&B is just beautiful. This person is a master pianist
Hmm, I appreciate this is classy but not really my thing.
Well balanced and diverse, full of feeling and soul
Slow and melancholic. Enjoyable but it didn't really sit with me.
5/5 for Wild is the Wind, Lilac Wine, and Black is the Color. The other tracks leave less of an impression and Simone overindulges her vibrato throughout. Four Women is a minor masterpiece, but I never really feel like listening to it.
Really lovely voice and thoroughly enjoyable album.
This one just wasn't doing it for me. Some of it would catch my attention, but it never held it. 2.5 Stars
It's the HOV sample!
I liked this mixture of styles on this album, and yet at the same time, this isn't the kind of album that I'd yearn to listen to again. Fine in passing. 2.8/5.
1966, singing the truth, and foreshadowing other female voices to come, including Roberta Flack and Carly Simon.
I was surprised by how upbeat the first song was. Really liked that one. The rest of the album, not so much. Depressing and sad songs. No doubt her singing is heartfelt, but too much "chanteuse" for me.
Simone’s voice is unique and powerful. This stands up well with other works from the era but probably only doesn’t have staying power for me for anything other than lack of familiarity. More of her works are surely worth a listen but it’s not the highest on my list.
Ihan kiva työpäivän taustalla
Ihan kivaa.
Started strong, finished meh. 3/5
Damn she got a deep voice 7/10 I have listened to this before and it was a pleasant revisit
A three-leaning-four-star album.
Nice. Good.
The last song was nice.
Overall not bad. Not really my kind of thing, but definitely not a terrible record. I’d rate it a 3/5 personally. No songs really stand out. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it.
oh so romantic and passionate. half the songs went into my "dimmed bar" playlist!!! best listened to with a bottle of wine!
I enjoyed this. She has a great voice.
Garten, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Nette Scheibe.
She has really impressive piano chops!
Expectation: -> No expectations. After listening: -> Took a couple playthroughs to warm up to this one. Voice/vocals took some getting used to. If you're in the right setting and get into the right mind space, this is quite good. 3 pushing 4. Track ranking: What more Lilac Ask Break down Wild Love Four Why keep Either way If I Black
Collection of Jazz and Blues from one of the greatest voices of all time. Her magnificent voice carries the album accompanied by sparse instrumentation. Nina effortlessly goes from loud and powerful to quiet and delicate, inducing tears on a number of tracks. Album is named after the eponymous film and I thought it would have more to do with that but it seems to be just thematic allusion. I can see why this album is on this list but most of the songs aren't very interesting to me as a whole. I wouldn't come back to this to listen front to back. Instead, I would cherry pick the standout moments here which for me were Four Women, Wild is the Wind, and Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair.
is notable that even when most of the songs are not written by her, her interpretation is outstanding and emotional. At the same time, some songs really worked for me, and others were forgettable . idk
A fine album and a nice listen at night. There are many Nina Simone albums to choose from for the book and this one seemed to get a lot of acclaim. Nonetheless, certain songs felt a little dragging and could have finished stronger.
top 3 - Four Women, Wild Is the Wind, Break Down and Let It All Out. Beautiful voice!! Worth revisiting and definitely belongs on this list.
Okay
I didn't find this offensive, but it also left almost zero impact on me, so it gets a meh
Nice jazzy and often dramatic music, with engaging piano, supports Simone's unimpressive and distracting vocals. Simone's voice is at times harsh and unpleasant when adjacent to the instruments in the band, but her songwriting and orchestration is impressive and keeps the music engaging. The subject matter of the album is noteworthy and Simone's passion is apparent.
I like Nina Simone and all, but this was just ok.
Top Songs: I Love Your Lovin' Ways What More Can I Say Break Down and Let It All Out Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair
Judging it entirely by the cover alone, I thought I was going to love this record - it just looks like a classic. And it's good, in its way, I just thought it all sounded a bit cobbled together. None of the songs really stood out to me - they just kind of drifted by. Maybe I wasn't in the mood and I should come back to it.
Not sure what I was expecting, but perhpas something more pop and ppolished than this is, which turned out to be a good thing. Four Women was probably my favourite track. An album I think typicla of this list where I am glad I have listened to it, enjoyed it but in all honesty I probably won't listen to again.
Worth revisiting but overall nice Jazz
This was better than I expected, but a bit sombre in places. Ultimately not my thing. The title track was interesting, because I didn't realise that Bowie's version was a cover, so at least I've learnt something. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (5/10) Total reviewed : 265 Already owned : 61 Purchased : 15 To buy list : 1 Nope : 188
Reminds me of some early Bond themes. Great piano. For 1966, black female artist, easy to hear why it was groundbreaking.
Very smooth and lovely to the ears. Nina Simone is beautiful to listen to. Lilac Wine is my favourite.
Ahead of its time
This was interesting and kinda boring at the same time
Good anos very timid instrumental, but beautiful and know the exactly moment to shine. For Nina, her voice fits really well with the instrumentation, and her lyrics are very strong and straightforward. A really good project overall
Great, soulful piano playing; however, I found her vocals (controversially) a bit lacking and hard on the ears in parts.
p98. 1966. 3 stars. One of THE great voices on top form. Let down by some suspect song choices and arrangements, but when this is good it's magnificent.
not really my taste
Good album for its genre. Alas this is not a genre I care for.
Nina Simone just has the way to make everything feel purposeful. Like preaching to the church, with a sound to match. Just this album wasn’t what I’m used to but still good.
3.5
Liked this one. A nice listen. Probably won't come back to listen again often.
Legendary !!
Funky jazz not bad
really impressive! she nails the slow mournful misery sound, but the album spreads out a little from there. gives her room to really flex her vocal chops. just one or two more solid songs would bump up the score i think. favorite song is either Why Keep On Breaking My Heart or Either Way I Lose. really strong 3
Non male, un po, slow
I just kept imagining how amazing it would have been to hear her sing live. It was a very slow, emotional album that I found it hard to relate to, but I have to appreciate the artistry. A voice like hers is rare. I loved this in concept but it felt a bit heavy for me.
Album 1 done on 2/27/26. I think by rating this 3 stars I set a good bar for what a 4 is, this was a good album that made me feel things but didn't blow me away from start to finish. Loved the vocal harmonies and storytelling throughout. I enjoyed opener Love Your Lovin Ways was because of the way the four women added to the shape of the melody, but the rest of the album was tonally very different. My favorite track was Lilac Wine, and the title track was also outstanding. The melancholy emotions in Nina's voice and tragic lyrics were inspired. My opinion is that the instrumentals were middling for what I thought they would be in this era of vocal jazz. Settles the work as 3 stars for me on first listen per my own tastes. I hope to get a instrumental jazz or psychedelic pop album next time I visit 1966.
3.5
Okay this one was pretty good. Had I not done my regular research beforehand I would have thought this album was performed by a man. A very unique voice that works well with this style of music. Like a lot pf the albums on this list, it’s not OVERLY exciting, but it gets the job done for what it is
3 ½
Nice, but yeah at this point you havent recommended me something good so...
New to me, I enjoyed this.
Lovely stuff
New to me and I enjoyed this very much, especially “Either Way I Lose”, thank you for sharing RGP…Tom.
This was initially a two star album, but for one song that has now sat with me for days. I felt the haunting, fragile, and defiant tones of Nina Simone’s voice singing Four Women in the core of my being.
She sang lilac wine hell yeah
Like some of her other songs and work better, but def enjoyed listening…
I’ve not listened to a lot of Nina Simone so I wasn’t sure what to expect, this wasn’t really for me but I absolutely appreciate the talent
Pretty boring honestly. I can return to some tracks but most stuff here is meh. 3/5
beautifully soulful
nice
Nina Simone is always amazing, but this album is not really representative of their classic work. It comprises of great recordings but they are from several different sessions and not planned as a concise and individual album. But still, you would be wasting your time here. Her deep voice just melts like butter on top of those jazzy and blues piano chords.
This falls right in the middle for me. Wild Is The Wind is gorgeous, I Love Your Lovin' Ways and Break Down... are strong songs, but it's all quite downbeat and didn't affect me the way that it's clearly inspired other people. And that has made it maybe the most difficult album I've had to review so far - i just feel I should be getting more from this than I have done, so I can't give it more than a 3.
MY skin is kinda lumpy and green. I am VERY sick. My name? Bony Soprano, leader of the orange juice mafia. I probably should have SOME reverence for this. First, I will say, that Nina Simone's singing voice never really made sense to me. I just didn't think it's that uhh good. There is something vaguely sour about the notes. This is really highlighted on "Break Down and Let it All Out." However, the singing is actually fantastic in all it's shabby glory. This thing is RIFE with emotion. It's not the greatest record I've ever heard, but it was a pleasant surprise. I've got nothing else. I've fallen behind again and my brain is addled with the poisons of modern day. 3 HIGHLIGHTS: Four Women, Lilac Wine
The Story of O.J. sample ?! Given Up On Me sample ?!
Classic R&B easy listening.
Easy listening - good record to have for a party
A voice to get lost in. Piano arrangements resonate in both senses of the word. Four Women is a highlight.
Started out with some good variety and compelling ideas, but got pretty one note as it went on. Nina is undoubtedly a force in the history of music, but we weren’t terribly impressed with this record.
Good soul album, 3.5
Pretty good felt really cinematic
It's truly wonderful and deep, but for me it's hard to listen such music. "Four women" is a masterpiece, also liked third and last track. I'm deeply touched by Nina Simone's story, but for me musically it's only 2-3 stars. (Piano is still awesome)
Hauntingly beautiful. Black is the Color of my True Love’s Hair
I especially love the piano tracks, what a talent 3.5
Slower than expected. Incredible voice.
3/6
My rating 3.2. Loved the first song and appreciated the political nature of the second but after that got bored with the string of overly melodramatic torch songs. I guess not for me. Maybe give it another listen???? &&&&
Amazing vocals. Was nice to listen to once but will probably not go back
Strong bold lady with interesting vocals. Not used to that genre of music so not sure how I felt about it. I think more required.
nice while coding.
This caught me on a patient day and I thought some of these songs were really beautiful. 3.5/5
I listened to this once before on Apple's GOAT album countdown and didn't really like it. But I took more time to listen to it this time around and it's actually a pretty decent album. That rare contralto voice is almost haunting, especially paired with her lyrics that are reflecting the race/gender attitudes of the time. My delineation between a 3 and 4 is: would I actively want to go back and listen to it? In this case, no, but I wouldn't mind hearing it again if I'm going through another list and it is better than the multitude of other 3 star albums I've been stuck with lately.
A solid, emotional album with a warm atmosphere. Nina’s voice has a distinctive, pleasant tone, but the music works best as a backdrop rather than something that fully holds your attention for focused listening.
Great voice. The songs themselves are not the best (minus the first song, which I really liked). I would be interested to hear other albums by her though.
A very jazz influenced album with touches of blues rolled in for good measure. Simone is very talented vocally with a deeper natural tone than you would expect from a woman. The piano is her companion on every track, but the drums and horn section play a vital role as well. A nice intro to Nina Simone for me, especially since this music is 60 years old yet still enjoyable.
Simone has an incredibly unique voice and a powerful delivery that is all her own. But the songs and the style don’t age well here. Terrific songstress, but the material is lacking.
There is a lot to like on this album. Smooth jazz piano, poetic lyrics, and the cool yet deliberate vocals from Nina Simone. I like the vibe of the album. Solid all around.
Uh yeah its charming like Hairspray tje musical or whatever but i dont find it particularly exciting. i dont think this era is generally for me
Ok
Don't hate but don't like it.
oh wow oh wow. i have listened to nina simone before but nothing like fully listening to her album and this is definitely so so rich and powerful. GIRL goosebumps to say the least. and these are left over recordings????? oh lilac wine…
1/18 Really good R&B/Soul album. Was surprised to hear the source of the sample from The Weeknd's song Given Up on Me was from this album's title track
Nina Simone, the OG androgynous vocal queen. This album had some really beautiful moments, but tbh was a little too dated for me to fully enjoy. I could still very much appreciate the artistry though! My favorite song on the album was, of course, 'Wild is the Wind'. The piano and her vocals are just otherworldly in that song. I also was curious about 'Four Women', and googled who each woman represented and what the story there was. Poignant take on Black women archetypes, especially back in that time period. I also love how she kinda screams/sings "PEACHHEESSSSS!!!" at the end of the song lol. Lots I enjoyed, but still not entirely my cup of tea. 3/5.
sorry nina not my fav
I guess I expected more. Nina is an incredible singer and I love her voice, but I guess I find her music to be played for a certain mood or to be placed at a strategic spot in a playlist. As an album experience, though there are no bad songs, it was a little bit of a chore. 3/5
Started out streng but the end of it wasn't too overwhelming
Nina Simone my queen
The tone of voice made it kind of hard to listen to
Easy Listening…3/5…I like “I love your loving ways” and “Break down and let it all out”….rest was decent background filler.
HER VOICEEEE
Good in the 60's I bet 3/5
I get she's iconic, just not my jam
🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Love Nina Simone and her voice, and Lilac Wine is just beautiful. It lost me a bit towards the end, and finding out afterwards that this album was pieced together from studio off-cuts explains that, but overall I enjoyed this enough that I will be keeping it around.
Wild is the wind, more tame is this album.
2.5/5 ⭐️ (just not my style, sorry nina queen)
Good but not very interesting
Okay so I know it is really good but it was one of those listens where I wasn’t exactly connecting with it/in the mood. I think it’s probably a 4 but I am noting a 3 because that is reflective of my experience.
It's nice. More of a background type of music for me. The vocals and musicality are amazing, nonetheless.
I am still not a jazz fan and I acknowledge that I am not cool enough to love this album. So be it.
Not her best work, but her voice is sublime and it was still nice to listen to. There are live tracks at the end which didn’t really sound like they were. Strange.
virkelig godt - specielt lilac wine
It's not a genre I listen to often but this is very good music. Her singing is powerful and energetic. The album's production is top notch. But you can hear it is a compilation album and some songs feel a bit unfinished.
I prefer the more chill tracks. She's got a beautiful voice, and it's just a real mood. I always loved loved loved the Bowie 'Wild Is The Wind', and never really delved into this one beyond one listen before. But it's still excellent. I love the elaborate keys on this one, it really works. And her voice is still imbued with emotion. 3.5 rounded down.
3/5
I found it kinda...thin, musically. That's All I Ask and Either Way I Lose were great and had really solid depth. The rest felt like they were let down by the lack of musical support for Nina Simone's great voice. Maybe that's just the style of music and it's not for me, and that's okay. +2 songs into the rotation.
Never heard before. Wonderful piano. Favourite: What more can I say?
3/5
not really my genre
Very good. She can go from mellow and sedate to upbeat and fun. Good album.
Solid Nina Album, nothing really stood out to me but I could listen again
very delicate, thought-provoking album. One you could listen to, while gazing at the sky or sitting on a plateau
Epic voice but not my kind of sound.
Is it racist to say that Nina Simone sometimes sounds like a goat? Sounds kinda racist. But that's how I feel.
Nothing really stuck for me but overall very good.
I wanted to like this more than I did. It’s good, she has a great voice, but I just never connected with it.
She's an amazing singer.
It’s good and I enjoyed it, but it’s not something I would find myself returning to. Highlights - Lilac wine - Break down and let it all out - Wild is the Wind - If I should lose you
Amazing voice, but the songs are ordinary 3/5
I love what Nina represents, but there I times when I listen to her sing and wonder if, in fact, she should be singing. But I’m going 3 stars for what she represents.
I thought some songs were incredible while other songs were ballad-y in a way I didn't prefer. Her voice and the subject matter was captivatig.
Not really my thing but it was fine.
Voice - 10/10 Back tacks - 3/10 I want to like this one more but it really just washes out to be an average album for me.
Iconic impact full. Easy to hear the influence on modern performers.
A bit on the slower side for my tastes. Some great piano and vocal performances.
Creates an environment with a unique beauty.
A bit disjointed for me, but some of the songs really pack a punch. High 3
Nina Simone is a superb pianist and vocalist with one foot in the fifties. This album lacks coherence, and was apparently made up from left over studio recordings from previous albums.
I enjoy Nina Simone’s often thought provoking music, but this album was bit too somber for me. So it’s a 3
This is pretty but not something I'd listen to again.
Wonderful album from a blind spot in my musical knowledge. This is the first time I've heard of Nina Simone. I thoroughly enjoyed this record. Thematically, this is a very deep poetic album but musically every song is easily accessible. From the first track I expected a boogie woogie album. However, the album took a dramatic turn with the second song, "Four Women." So, was this gonna be jazz. Nope. Even though the arrangements were stark and typical of traditional jazz combos, the song structures were more akin to pop songs. Identifiable hooks kept my attention and was just the sugar necessary to take any bitterness out of lyrics. Her voice is unique. I've never heard such a quirky vibrato. It works for her. It lends enough emotion to the performance to ensure the lyrics sound authentic. My favorite song: "Lilac Wine." A wonderful discovery.
Nina is of course a legend, but I hadn't heard more than a song here and there, or snippets in documentaries. This is not music I would want to listen to all the time but it is undeniably good.
Pretty good stuff but not my style of music exactly, enjoyed the mor jazzy stuff though
Vilken pipa det är ändå! Break Down And Let It All Out!
Really just not for me, and missing a flow. Hell of a unique voice though
Disjointed and not really in my wheelhouse. Got lots of respect for it and it was all perfectly … fine. But not really my thing.
3.5, great jazz voice. Wide range where in some tracks her voice is so deep while others it hits much higher notes. Cool album with a slow tempo.
Wee bit mellow but beautiful voice. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Either Way I Lose ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved some tracks
What a beautiful, dynamic, emotive voice. Vibes are generally too mellow for me, but I liked a couple songs. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Break Down And Let It All Out, Either Way I Lose ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved some tracks.
This was really nice. Very pleasant and lovely. I imagine there is a lot going on in the lyrics but unfortunately this acted as background music while working. I did really enjoy it. I would go back to this.
Nice record. Listened while I made dinner. Will probably go back
Great.
Such a tremendous voice
i may revisit this. pleasant listen
Voice isn't my kind of thing
Pre: know feeling good and some of her hits Post: great classic vocals
132/1001 :: Nina Simone - Wild is the Wind Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 5 Listen before you die: I don’t think so Starts strong and fades into something delicate. She picks it back up again with Why Keep Breaking my Heart but overall while beautiful I found this album a little too slow for my liking.
I though he voice was great, and the four women song was pretty interesting, but the rest of the album was just kind of ok
break down, either way
Nicht wirklich meins, aber nicht schlecht gemacht. 2 1/2 und ich runde auf.
Often beautiful but not always interesting. 3.5
Some ok tracks. She has a pretty good voice. Felt like the album needed more pace especially with first track to get me goin.
Solid listen. Would like to revisit on a summer evening with a glass of wine. Super cool that Nina Simone cover covered a David Bowie song.

Nina is good
I don’t like vocal jazz, but this is far from the worst example. Vocal jazz basically removes everything I like about jazz—complex, eclectic instrumentation—in favor of a more relaxed, vocal-forward sound. And since I don’t care about vocals most of the time, I just don’t enjoy it. This album, despite the fact that she really likes stretching out syllables, which is probably the single-most annoying vocal technique for me, occasionally makes it work (most noticeably in Four Women) while also having some more energetic songs I generally enjoy a lot more than the laid-back ones. This album is fine. It’s very far from my taste, but it’s decently enjoyable.
Moody in a moving way. Not whiney.
Ik vind het laatste nummer (either way I lose you) het leukst.
Rating: 3.1 Very easy listening. I imagine if you took a morning dump while listening to this you would hear the birds singing, see the ray of sunlight shining through the window, and receive a call with good news or something.
Not my kind of thing, still a great voice
I love Nina Simone and several of her songs, but some of the sings on this particular album seemed a little theatrical or show tuney and that's not for me.
Phenomenal vocals, perfect length. Very very good.
