Reviews (page 8 of 9)

sounds like radiohead fronted by peter gabriel pretending like he’s in coldplay. sounds like a 2008 i remember avoiding.

Interesting not my cup of tea

Boring.

a couple of the songs were ok, but the rest kind of sounded like temu coldplay to me.

Why this here

Sangeren lyder som Peter Gabriel, så det kan jeg godt lide. Derudover er det godt nok et britisk indiealbum fra 00’erne

Ok fed men uessentiel

Another album that’s just waaaay too slow and sappy. Nothing else really to say about it, I think it’s boring

Will done, but very sleepy inducing. Not my jam.

++: Mirrorball, An Audience with the Pope, The Fix +: The Bones of You, Some Riot, We're Away +-: Starlings, Grounds for Divorce, Weather to Fly, One Day Like This, Friend of Ours -: The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver 5,2/10

interesting. large. not many vocals

Listenable in the background

Like It's alright, 3 stars would also be fine

There's a fine line between English Melancholy and Dreary Shit. This falls to the latter.

The algorithm must know I'm a sad white guy these days because I am on a horrible run of sad white guy music and I don't like it.

no se si banque, me viene pasando en álbumes asi que me gustan intros instrumentales pero las voces me le bajan, este está bastante experimental electrónico me llamaron la atención

Not my fave, just kind of boring.

Not bad, not good enough.

Ground for Divorce was a nice bluesy surprise, but the rest didn't resonate with me.

It was... fine. I felt like it was *close* to the sort of music and genres I like: Fleet Foxes, Pink Floyd, Animal Collective etc., but it didn't quite hit the mark. I wanted to turn it off a few times.

2/5 - I didn’t need to hear this. It has some interesting moments, but doesn’t leave me with any lasting impression other than over-produced rock with a singer who reminds me of Chris Martin. By no means is this a bad record, but it doesn’t belong on a list of albums I need to hear. “One Day Like This” was pretty good, but ought to end 1:30 earlier.

I wanted to like it but just couldn’t get into it or finish it

Like Coldplay, but worse. Lots of slow, monotone singing. I enjoyed one song, but the opening song was so bad I think it tainted the rest of the listen for me. A generous 2/5

They have a decent sense of melody. I just wish the instrumentation wasn’t so terribly flaccid.

Nice, mellow, soft, and not very exciting. It's not really my cup of tea, and if I could score on a half point basis, I would give it a 2.5.

Boaring

the vocals put me off

Disappointing. “One Day Like This” is still very good, but the rest of the album is a miss (I even got sick of Grounds for Divorce after a few plays).

Pretty dull.

384/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

I can understand why this might be considered a good album, but I just don't like it. 2 stars or D+.

Wasn’t a huge fan of this one

Like a better version of Coldplay. Still not that good, but it wasn’t horrible either. Started to kind of drag after a while. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

Kind of all over the map.

boring

There’s that one song, and rest is quite dull

Uncertain of what to expect of a band named "Elbow." I like indie rock though, so I am trying to be optimistic (The album is over an hour long though, so hopefully I enjoy it.) — To begin, the panning in "The Seldom Seen Kid" is infuriating and makes me feel physically uncomfortable. The horns comes in at inappropriate intervals. The songs themselves sound like David Gilmour's Pink Floyd. I am a Roger Waters fan :c The vocalist sounds like Gilmour too, except not the hot, sexy 70s Gilmour, but the old, raspy post-Floyd David Gilmour. A 𝗟𝗢𝗧 of people compared Elbow to Radiohead too—I can see that too. Not in a good way. I won't call the whole album ass, but it is very formulaic and repetitive. All alarms and no surprises.

I'd heard much about the band, but never really listened to any. This sounds like so many other bands, while I don't know who was before and who later, I hear almost nothing unique (individual vocalists voices etc. obviously are). Radiohead-ish pop music, Coldplay feeling bits, Peter Gabriel vibes... Biggest thing are sound and styling, which reminds me of many other artists, but some of the interesting bits sound like The White Stripes on several occasions and across different instruments. There are other similarities I found noticeable which I can't pin point, so much so that I'm having trouble listening to the actual music over picking on the "samples" (as in "this sound is off that album, that tone is off this artist"). Music wise I found it boring, plain and not engaging at all.

Wasn't super into this one.

Can only describe this sound as pretentious - must be the strings. There was some good bass guitar dirt at points though

Wanky slop.

I initially wanted to make a joke about the 'seldom seen' part of this albums title to be quite apt but apparently there are over a million people who were miserable enough to tune into this sleeping aid of a band monthly? I can only assume this albums inclusion was once again born from the desire to shove as much British drollery onto a list already bursting at the seams with it. I'm not a huge radiohead fan but Elbows style is so derivative of the parts I dislike about Radiohead the most that I was really just wanting to go put something from In Rainbows on instead.

This feels like coworker music, but one has to imagine what your coworker would be doing in a world where capitalism didn't prevail. Would your boring, abstemious colleague be sitting and staring at excel in a world with no profit motive or would he be hiking up and down the Andes till he dies? You have to think the same of this band. Would they be making boring ass music for record labels if there was no money behind it? The regular flourishes of brilliance in the instrumentals here lead me to believe that these guys would be better off composing and collaborating on soundtracks. Specifically the start of Mirrorball sounds like it should be the soundtrack for a movie that critics/studios would label as "cerebral". This is entirely subjective (it's a music review, go figure) but the vocals here just weigh this album down so heavily. It feels like it was added as an afterthought like "deary me, commercial music needs lyrics!". Most, if not all, songs on here would have better without vocals but here they are and they really don't let up. At times, listening to this album is like watching a movie with someone taller than you standing in front of you. Grounds for Divorce sounds like some proto-Imagine Dragons bullshit and its existence alone places a hard cap of 3/5 on a possible score for this album. You know what I mean too with the "oooh-ahh-oooh" backing vocals. One Day Like This feels like it was made for a corporate keynote presentation for a luxury SUV. Highlights: Mirrorball, The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver, Friend Of Ours

Not much fun. Felt a bit... 'done', and of its time.

Sad boy stuff

This did nothing for me. Boring!

The music just isn't my style. It sounded like a watered-down Peter Gabriel/Radiohead kind of thing. Sort of Coldplay-ish, I guess. Just glad to see something new on this list.

Lots of lush song arrangements but with little in the way of memorability outside of the one obvious hit.

A British Coldplay trying to be Radiohead. There's an echo in these reviews.

an album that tried to do a little bit of everything it had heard on the radio in the 2000's, and did none of it very well. Incredibly stale 5/10

sounds like every slow sad radiohead song but with annoying romantic alcoholism and a voice that is annoying but not in the thom yorke way where you eventually like it

A lot of albums that sounds like this on the generator. At least it's better than Coldplay or Radiohead. 1.52

Fine, not really that remarkable, I kinda forgot about it after it finished

Som om Peter Gabriel gjort musiken till de deppiga delarna i Notting Hill

Another irrelevant indie band

Not good to run to, and only knew two songs

Not that notable for me

Never heard of this artist, or maybe I have and don’t remember, because I just finished this album and I really don’t remember anything about it.

Radiohead lite

A paint by the numbers average indie album. Unfortunately it had 2-3 "anthems" which just make my blood boil I hate them so much (Divorce being the worst offender). But there was good instrumentals throughout. All around not for me. 2/5

Too slow and the songs feel too similar. I don't think it's that good.

Lukewarm

Really not good. 2 stars

There has to be a really good reason for a rock album post 2000 to get on this list. This album is not it.

Not sure why this is on the list. Not interesting, not any stand out tracks, no energy. Not worth it.

I just don't find this particularly gripping. Specifically referring to "An Audience With The Pope." Yeah, I just finished the album and I didn't really "get" this album. Brits, man lol.

I've always wanted to like Elbow but have struggled to connect with their music. That said, I was looking forward to giving The Seldom Seen Kid a proper listen to see if it could change my mind. I can definitely see the appeal of this album—it has shades of Coldplay and Radiohead, two widely beloved bands. Musically, it’s fantastic, and the lyrics are beautifully crafted. However, for me, the pacing feels quite slow. A song like The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver is undeniably beautiful, but it’s not something I could listen to repeatedly. The album leans heavily into a melancholic, almost dreamy atmosphere, which doesn’t entirely resonate with me. Favorite song: Grounds for Divorce—a great track with a strong, driving energy. I also like One Day Like This, though it has been overplayed in recent years. Least favorite: Starlings—it’s such a slow start to an album that it feels like you’re waiting for something to happen. Album artwork: A cool cover. I also really like the interactive version on Apple Music.

Chill. Never heard of this before.

Largely boring and uninteresting.

Veers close to a 1. That 'One Day Like This' is the very definition of a song that I hate because it has been so over-played.

Boring !

The album definitely feels cohesive and a single body of work with some nice instrumentals/strings (very 2000's indie style), but the minimal-range vocals and the plodding nature of the album don't do it for me. I found myself craving Lil Wayne for a weird reason. He released a much better album in the same year, but for some reason it's not on the 1001 albums list???

Atmospheric. Ambient. Noisy. Verbose. Doesn’t quite captivate.

There were a couple of nice tracks but overall meh

Not offensive but something was missing here. It didn't click with me.

Not my bag. Too mellow for me.

Boring

Felt like a coldplay album without all the mystical noises and sort of weird sounds that are meant to be trippy and cool. Then ‘One Day Like This’ come on and made me think of football. Obviously the reason this album made the list. Overall very mehh

Elderly, rural and plain. Music made by Hovis.

Not too standout for me and too long. My attention span can't handle this. Will I listen to again: 0%

Started off as a fairly innocuous indie rock album. Influenced by post-rock acts, perhaps. The light strings and delicate, deliberate instrumentation had me engaged from the first few songs. As soon as Grounds for Divorce started, this album completely vomited up all the good will that it had earned from me with a completely hamfisted and ugly attempt at capitalizing on the "sound of the time." That completely boring kick-boom-hey blues rock that made the Black Keys so popular. It's fucking music for ads. Even the wiki page for this album mentions Grounds for Divorce and all the different ads and TV shows it's been featured on. After track 4, my enthusiasm took a nosedive. It's a shame too, because there is definitely something here to enjoy. Thom Yorke style crooning over hushed drums and tight strings. I have to wonder if the band itself wanted to go in that direction or if they were just trying to get in on that blues rock money that so many other bands of the mid-late 2000's were getting. Either way, it's sad. The album suffers for it. Profits over art, I guess.

Good background music some interesting parts but not something I'm in a rush to listen to again.

Made me want to put my elbows in my ears.

Interesting melodies but overall an absolute snoozefest

What is it about people with this exact vocal style that makes them want to make overwrought hour-long albums?

Feels like a mix of Radiohead and Coldplay. Not in a good way.

This album is sadly just more proof of how heavily the authors bias played into the creation of this list. There are just far too many albums from the UK, from artists I’ve never heard of in my life, for it to be a coincidence. If I don’t recognize a band, I can check where they are from and more often than not, it’s somewhere in Europe. Like, if we are to look at this on the basis of how essential these albums are to the growth of a person’s musical tastes, can we really place something like this in the same category as Abbey Road or Songs In the Key of Life or It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back? It just doesn’t seem comparable to me. Even for indie rock standards, this album is incredibly dull. Everything feels so flat, and basically all elements of the music lack any real impact or unique style. This is chamber pop for people who like when companies modernize their logos and make them way too oversimplified. The vocals especially don’t add anything of value to the music. He just sounds like British singer number 99. It is slightly unfortunate, because songs like Mirrorball and Friend of Ours are actually quite beautiful at times. But they are surrounded by so much of nothing. These songs have very flowery sections which, while nice, are super repetitive. And I can’t help but lose interest fast. Ultimately this just turns into background music for me. Not the good kind though. The kind where I’m begging for it to be over. Rating: 4/10

I am in a minority but I find his vocals so whinny.

Never heard of this band before. I got a milquetoast Coldplay vibe. Like, not awful but not memorable at all.

One great song!!

This is another example of early 2000s indie-style that passed me by. It's not as bad as generic indie landfill, but still doesn't really set my world aflame. A few good tunes (Grounds for Divorce, One Day Like This) that catch my ear. It's OK, I guess. But dull, very dull.

Overplayed as it is, One Day Like This is a really, really great song. The rest of this less so.

"Grounds for Divorce" was the stand out track on this album. I didn't have much thoughts on this album but it did feel a bit melancholy overall and maybe that had to do with the fact that a "friend of the band died suddenly in 2006. The closing track, "Friend of Ours", as well as the liner notes of the album, are dedicated in his memory." I doubt I'll revisit this one. I actually thought this was the Eels. So I was initially disappointed because this didn't match my expectations. I hope we get to The eels at some point because I like them better.

Triple m type music, eh

Meh, it wasn't bad just a bit boring for my liking.

Another British rock band trying to put me to sleep. 2/5

This is like Coldplay if I never liked their music 2/5

I think it is trash old-fashioned album

This sounds like Coldplay but even more boring, which I thought it was impossible...

'Grounds for Divorce' en 'One Day Like This' zijn wel classics, en zijn belangrijke haakjes geweest in mijn 'exploration of indie rock'. 6/10 Highlights: Grounds for Divorce One Day Like This

Not my taste

Not surprised to find it didn't click for me. Lyrics and vocals were mundane and outside of a few scattered moments, it just passed me by listen after listen.

An album I will seldom listen to

alright album

Fine, I guess.

Every song is just slow moaning with a bunch of reverb. You can tell the album was recorded very well, but it’s just wasted on this.

A story is being told. Somewhere out there, there’s an audience. Not here. No one is listening.

A kaleidoscope of sound aligned with Britpop. Opening track is powerful. The Richard Hawley track is burlesque

Holy shit that was boring. Like I'd rather just have an album be downright bad, so I can just DNF it and move on... But that just drug on and on and never getting better.

Exciting at the end

Felt like a long wet Sunday afternoon

Starlings is a killer opening for this album. I'm having a hard time with this rating. Starlings is the best of their sound for me. The rest of the album just kind of meanders around aimlessly.

Like wearing soggy slippers

Why is this an "essential album" we have to hear... yet there are so many good ones out there that haven't had a look in?

Nearly 10% into this “project” and approx 15% of the albums/bands I’ve never heard of..and here’s another one. I’ve only liked 2 or 3 of them so far. So in theory, I may listen to 150-175 albums/bands I’ve never heard and only like around 30. And this one ain’t one of them

Feels in a similar vein to the Coldplay albums I’ve gotten on the list. Alright but nothing special (2.5/5)

perfectly fine, couldnt stick in my head in the slightest tho

bro got out the orchestra

Fine I guess!

Not for me

Never been a fan of them from the songs i've heard, even the big singles on here still don't do much for me. The vocalist just doesn't sit right with me, brings the whole thing down. Just not for me.

Never got the Elbow hype, still don't.

Second one in a week I've had that just belongs in a different decade. Just doesn't feel like it should be on the list.

Not bad, exactly, but in one ear and out the other. An English rock band from 2008.

Seems like the stomp and clap kind of indie album. Better than others I have heard but not enough to convert me totally.

Jotenkin Elbow on ällöttävä nimi bändille hehe.

I read what elbow was about before getting into the album. Wasn't as revolutionary or alternative as I expected. Very alright

I enjoyed the dynamic sound, the varied genres, and the stings. The vocals are beautiful also. However I found myself feeling bored, a lot of the songs seem really dated to me. Especially the blues revival song. It was nice for a listen but not my cup of tea

Not for me! It had some good moments, though. It was cinematic and beautiful at times. The lyrics just didn't hit.

The dramatic orchestral blasts sound very dated. I've always found 2000s indie pretentious. Which is saying quite a lot: I'm usually a fan of unique, complex alternative music. Maybe I'm just not a fan of indie fans. And maybe this album just wasn't complex enough. Some delicate tracks were pleasant enough while I focused on work. Others sounded like an Apple ad. Rarely emotionally moving, despite the overbearing strings section. On the contrary, there is something scarily icy about these rhythms.

This is an easy and pleasant listen. It's smooth throughout, ethereal at its best and agreeable at its worst. The songs i'd say are uniquely and well written, and Guy Garvey is a good singer. The album is just too... gentle? I wish it had more bite. I keep listening and so far it just isn't sticking with me.

Not my style, only a few songs I liked. Enjoyed the version with BBC orchestra better

Like Grounds For Divorce but find the rest a difficult listen.

music for calm mood, voice a little bit like Sting

Slow. Somber. If you're in the mood did not feel good about yourself or life this is the album for you.

What in the name of Adult Contemporary is this crap? Grounds for Divorce is a good song. I've heard it before. Probably while I was looking for "Divorce Songs".... but did not care for the rest of the album (even if he does sound like a British Dave Matthews). I'm glad the last song is called lullaby because it pretty much reaffirmed how I felt about this album... SNORE!

I fell asleep halfway through. Which was embarrassing because I was at the gym.

Not my cup of tea. There are a couple of gems on this, the obvious- Grounds for divorce and one day like this but overall I found the album to be a chore and a difficult listen.

It’s fine, I guess

I listened to it yesterday and it was unmemorable

I wasn't a huge fan of this album but I didn't really dislike it strongly either. I most just found it kind of boring. Not a lot about it stood out to me. It reminded me of lesser versions of other bands like Radiohead or even Coldplay (not that I hold Coldplay up too high). I just found it difficult to latch on to any of the songs. I put one as a standout because it caught my ear the most but still wasn't blown away by it. Standout Tracks: One Day Like This

Quando começou a quarta faixa "Grounds For Divorce"eu quase dei risada. Parecia música do artlist. "The Fix" também é outra que soa como tiozão demais, parece musical só que pra crise da meia idade.

Likte da ikkje så godt

Ok album, not really my favorite type of music...

soft, Gesang getragen, 2008 -> 2

Seems like a random British band that sounds like a bunch of other bands. Different sound in each song. Won’t run out and buy the record ….

pretty neat, not great, idk im getting bored of these samey rock albums

I'd probably like this more after repeat listenings, but I don't like it anywhere near enough to want to listen to it again

Buena producción, es interesante, pero me ha parecido... feo. Un 2.

A little too slow for my liking

Oddly nostalgic kinda reminded me of Coldplay. Didn’t really like at first but it got better

It’s okay. I don’t know why it’s on this list, but I gave it a go. Two songs stand out, but the rest are just standard dreamy pop music.

HATED THIS ALBUM.SO ANNOYING.IT SOUNDS LIKE A TERRIBLE MUSICAL.I don’t know why I hate it so much but I do.Only one “semi-good” song and that’s because of nostalgia for the Olympic Games.

Sounds demonic

Some jams but mostly not my thing

i liked a couple lines but :/

A rare instance where an album sounds absolutely beautiful but feels empty at the same time. I like one song but the grandiosity seems like a veneer and the songs lack specifics or heartfelt emotion. They are like an emotional show not personally emotional. The production is first rate but I have no desire to listen to it again.

Hated half the songs, the rest were decent.

Very samey and dull

These songs, whilst they’re fine, are all at least a minute too long. Everything feels a little overblown and self indulgent to me

Singer sounds like Peter Gabriel but the music runs a little too Coldplay for me. Four songs in, so far meh. I’m convinced this is only on the list cause the author is a Peter Gabriel fanatic. The music itself is really average and uninspired. It’s getting worse as it goes. Yeah this is shit pop.

Mellow alternative …. Absolutely NOT my style …. But this is just my opinion.. therefore I might be the wrong person to rate this … The album ran during breakfast and while I was drinking my morning French press coffee … and it felt like elevator music … sorry again but I am really not the guy reviewing this album I’m giving it three stars just to not do much harm

Pretty lame! 2/5

It's fine, but I probably won't listen to it much.

Pretty good, but not really my style so I wasn't vibing a lot with it. Production was great when they started using more digital sounds.

Beautiful instrumentals but didn’t really stand out to me A little slow - I think I would need to listen to this album more times to understand and enjoy it. And I can see myself coming back to it. 2.5

Apple did a good job selling the album. But, I returned it.

Ok Mits, it sucked but it wasn’t THAT bad. Kind of a cross between a Mr. Hudson album and a solo 90s Sting. But, it did suck.

2. Mope rock. Meh

The esotericness of this album is a bit lost on me. It is good as what it is. I find it similar to a bleaker Peaceful the World Lays Me Down by Noah and the Whale. Some moments shine through, most notably One Day Like This

Started out well enough. Guitars, pianos and various orchestral instruments taking their turns at centre stage. Nothing really memorable. Then the album went through a “musical theatre” phase before returning to melancholy pop. Not really my style. High 2

I find it boring

Kinda boring but also mixed really weird? Like it doesn't feel cohesive, it seems like every part is coming from a different room in a haunted house

Objectively interesting arrangement and instrumentation. I just didn’t really like anything. Not one song made me want to re-listen. These guys feel like they’d be great commercial musicians.

Not my cup of tea. Won't listen again, but maybe I will to see if my rating is correct.

Didn’t feel particularly original.

Expected better, but it just droned on so long without any interesting musical events.

Not normally something I’d listen do but a few songs were good. Don’t think I’ll revsir

Kinda forgot I was listening to music. 2/5.

1. Starlings - I didn't love how long it took for it to start, the lyrics are ok but don't love the way the singer sounds. It has an interesting ending. 2. The Bones of You - I like this one a bit better, it's more interesting and keeps my attention better. Interesting theme. I quite like the chorus. 3. Mirrorball - this one has an ok sound, a little simpler. Nice lyrics but not my style. 4. Grounds for Divorce - this one almost has a little bit of a country sound to me, but i like the sound it's more upbeat. 5. An Audience with the Pope - again an interesting sound, i liked the piano at the start. 6. Weather to Fly - this one has a soothing sound and nice cadence to it, but not my style. 7. The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver - interesting theme again, but it's also been done already on the album...is it a little one note? 8. The Fix - again a different style to some of the other songs, actually kinda interesting style. like it almost sounds old-timey to me. 9. Some Riot - very spare music in this one, not my favourite. a little boring to me sorry. 10. One Day Like This - i like the music in this one. sounds cinematic and dramatic. 11. Friend of Ours - very slow song, ok as a closer but a little boring. Overall, I don't mind the album and there are some cool sounds and different styles within it which i think is cool, but I really don't think this kind of music is my style. I don't love the way the singer sounds and for me that is a pretty big thing for liking a musical style.

He sounds like Sting I feel like a grown up listening to this. Like adults only, please. Is this what Coldplay could have been?

Might be good to put on if you are having trouble going to sleep. Other than that no thanks.

Some good songs, but slightly boring

Yuck. Sounds like a car commercial. Or a bumper for the newest show on FX. Ok I wrote that without looking and then so read the wiki and it straight up was used in a bumper for a new FX show. And tons of commercials. Who dreams of making music like this? Very self indulgent. It’s not incompetent or anything, just deeply annoying. I could see coming back to a couple tracks, but none of the millennial whoop garbage.

Really nothing to say about this album. I don’t hate it, but I don’t really have any strong feelings about it at all. It’s good music, no doubt about that, but I just don’t care. Almost none of the tracks really stand out to me as being better or worse than the others. The opening track was interesting for sure, but everything just started to blend together after that pretty quickly. I don’t see myself revisiting this album. 4/10 Top 3: 1. One Day Like This 2. Starlings 3. The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver

Meh. It was okay.

Spacey sleep rock. They played at the London Olympics. Best song is Audience With the Pope. Cool instrumentals throughout with some Caberet type songs.

Rock slow alternativo, onda coldplay más lento, onda mac demarco más tecno. No me convenció.

Kind of boring

Pretty dull but decent background music. Manc Coldplay.

It was OK. probably will not listen again.

It’s probably good to someone, but I didn’t like it

Really liked “the bones of you” Other songs are quite solemn, but I get alt-j vibes from them, which is nice. Can see listening to these in the car if I’m tired Weird guitar solos “The fix” is a weird song

Just kinda generic rock. Not doing much for me. 2/5

Listened to half of this and turned it off. I just found it boring.

Bof. The Bones of you est sympa mais c'est plus parce que je l'ai beaucoup entendue qu'autre chose je pense. Le reste c'est assez anecdotique

Vähän kesyhkö. Toimistolla muut työntekijät muisti ton ekan singlen mutta mulle sekin oli tuntematon. En tuu palaamaan tähän. 2/5

Huoh aika väsynyttä, vaikka alkoi ihan kiinnostavasti. Britti ofc..

Too depressive

Boring

Voice kind of reminds me of Dave Matthews

2/5. A pop/rock album that feels really bloated and would rather just listen to Radiohead because this is not working for me. I don't feel the emotion in the lyrics and the instrumentation is the worst part. It's honestly not that bad but I just don't care. There wasn't a song that I actively enjoyed from the album.

Not my thing.

Mellow and quiet rock, not really my thing. 2/5

It was ok. But not more. Nothing here really surprised me

It wasn't great. No need to revisit.

It was ok

Nothing special actually.

I like the music but the singer sounds just like Sting to me and it's very distracting. I guess that's not the worst thing but it's all I can hear. Probably a 3 if I wasn't so distracted.

This was kind of a fun little surprise the first few tracks. I knew nothing of Elbow. Then Grounds for Divorce kicked in and I thought, “Oh it’s that Chevy song.” I think this track was everywhere 15 years ago. Haven’t thought about it much since, but it’s cool. Overall this record gives like a cinematic feel, almost like if Coldplay didn’t sell out. But kind of forgettable in the end.

Seldom sounded interesting.

Listened Before? N Meh. It was okay. Pretty unremarkable. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: One Day Like This

Quite forgettable

Did you know Dave Matthews Band has a British spinoff? Apparently the Brits call them Elbow. Different names but equally lackluster.

I liked it a lot my first listen but when I came back to it I was bored and just waiting for it to end. I wanted to attack it a third time but in realizing it took effort I decided against it.

Like LLMs, this record doesn't innovate in any way, it just regurgitates what's around it. A predictable outcome of its environment.

If Radiohead wrote music for car commercials

I know one song of this album (it’s still in rotation at one of the radio channels I listen to) and that is more than enough. I just can’t see that there’s love for music here…

Take or leave

Not much for me in this album. Didn't find myself all that interested outside of here and there. Favorite track: Grounds for Divorce

Typical indie, not catchy

Niet vreselijk, wel vrij saai, slecht gearticuleerd en gewoon niet heel interessant.

It sounds so outdated to me. I would have loved it in the 2000s but I'm not in the mood for this type of music anymore.

A sleep-inducing listen. As many listeners have noticed, there is more than a hint of Radiohead in the elaborate, atmospheric song structures on this record, but I find this extremely meticulous attention to the production coupled with the orchestral instrumentation to result in a very cold listen. As for the lyrical content, Guy Garvey's voice is not to everyone's taste, but it carries an innocence which, along with his Northern charm, almost makes him a believable narrator for his tales of lost youth. But where most mancunians threw their lot in with The Smiths or Gang of Four, this cunt was stuck on Sgt. Pepper's and Queen. Weirdo. Fair play to him though, 'Grounds for Divorce' and the shit 'Hey Jude' pastiche of 'One Day Like This' have been staples of background music on British TV for the best part of a decade now. That's where most of this music belongs though - pushed so far into the background, it risks reaching hell before passing through my ears. Seriously soppy, milktoast dad rock, and it even brings Richard Hawley down with it. 'Weather to Fly' is probably the only track where Garvey's ambitious vision is properly realised. But even then, this album is currently getting higher ratings than the New York Dolls?!? (the last album I reviewed). Get to fuck. This brings nothing new to the table, and conforms to a middle of the road archetype of wannabe Phil Spector studio nerds who populated student dorms throughout the 2000s.

This is my first two on the list so far. I understand why it would have appeal, but a movie soundtrack without the movie is so dull to me. Most of the songs go on for so long while just repeating the same musical phrase over and over and over without any new chords or anything to change it up and keep my ears from tuning out. There are some very pretty moments and some parts that I like, but overall this is an album I just did not like. Favorite Tracks: Grounds For Divorce, The Fix, and the first three-ish minutes of One Day Like This

This album does not begin strong. It gives off "rom-com sad scene" vibes in the beginning. The songs grew on me a bit however; they eventually grew to being more of a "dystopian movie" kinda vibe. It's still not my cup of tea, but it's at least dramatic and large in a cliche kinda way. The mixing is oddly bad to convey this, though. I was looking for huge, immersive soundscapes that made me think of skyscrapers, but the songs felt like they were coming out of a gramophone at times. The singer's voice was good and kept me engaged, but the rest of the album's qualities were lacking. Favorite track: The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver

Not my cup of tea.

Started out tolerable, but unimpressive. It got pretty boring and tiresome by the end. It's not bad 3nough to be a 1, but boy does it make a case for it. Who is this band? How is this here? Another extremely questionable selection.

In 'The Bones of You' il cantante sembra Sting. Un po' piatto. Spero riprenda vitalità. Una delle migliori è 'The Fix' (feat. Richard Hawley)

Exceptionally average. A tad boring.

Mediocre.

A weird, almost likable album whose lead singer sounds like he's trying to emulate Peter Gabriel in his prime.

Sounds like stripped down Coldplay lmao

This was a bit of a slog. I’m not going to say it was a terrible album, I just didn’t find any of it interesting. Another example of the UK bias this list seems to show. If I’m going to listen to something in this genre; I’d rather listen to Gang of Youths. Hell, as pretentious as they are at least 1975 can be interesting at times. I will say tracks 8-10 were ok but overall this was a yawner and I’m now listening to the new Foals album as I write this and it’s awesome but for Elbow 2 stars

The band name is pretty lame. I can understand why people might like this kind of music but for me it is too slow, boring, and quiet for my liking. Sorry not my thing.

2.5/5. Great first listen. Like to hear more of this one.

Very ok, couldn’t really get into it

Boring sorry :/

Fine, okay, whatever. It's pretty boring, no? The singer sounds like a slightly less sad Michael Head. The best track is the slightly kooky lounge-indie track with Richard Hawley. Perhaps Elbow should ask Hawley to join full time as he makes their tunes better. Otherwise, this sounds like music for people who don't particularly care about music all that much.

Completely agree on the track with Richard Hawley. The best thing on the album by a good bit. But I like "An Audience with the Pope," too. It's not the kind of thing I would gravitate too frequently but if the whole album was as moody as those two songs I could see this being something I'd put on from time to time. As is though, it's a little too blah overall. And I just don't want to go around my elbow to get to my asshole, ya know?

*Extremely Butt-Head voice* Uhhh...is this Coldplay?

Too gloomy to enjoy that much

Man. I feel like my really great gf (6’1” and single btw) just broke up with me. This album was eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, with a shot of Halloween spice. If you loved this, you might like Sea Change by Beck.

interesting album. I don't know why, but it didn't really hold my attention. It had some sounds and ideas i really liked though. I need another listen probably!

Big sound rooted in their influences (blues, radiohead, clapton) that, all these years later, sound indelibly like the mid-aughts, Black Keys and truck commercials.

Album calme, intéressant. Son très 2000-2010 . Très Adult alternative vibes. Bref, une bonne réécoute possible?

Meh. Kind of forgettable, and not a great album. 2/5

Mopey depressing version of Britpop. The reason to hear this album before you die is that it may drive you to suicide.

I knew and really liked "Grounds for Divorce," and was very enthusiastic and eager to give the full album a listen. It was a disappointment for me.

Not their dullest. But still quite dull.

Not interested.

Didn’t love this one. Made me sleepy at work

It's not bad but it's not the kind of music I like.

Music for car commercials

Overall fairly boring and at time way too whiney.

Not bad, but not good. It was super forgettable to be honest.

No just no

A bore. Start to finish. The best song in my opinion is Lullaby, but as the last track I was already looking forward to this record being done.

Saved by the singles

I am in a bad anxiety filled mood today & while this is soothing so should have helped it had the opposite effect. It really just pissed me off how it sounds like every other gd band. Maybe will try again someday in a better more objective mood (or not).

Didn' find anything remarkable or that stood out on this album personally.

Never heard of this before, but guessing UK?. aaaand yep, some whiny Coldplay/Radiohead ripoff affair. Fuck off hey, wuss rock shit. 2/5.

‘Guy Garvey has said: "I grew up listening to every Genesis record. I learned to write harmonies by listening to Peter Gabriel.”’ Still sound like cack though, mate. Music for people who don’t like music.

Aburrido. Después de leer un poco me enteré que fue muy reconocido y traté de escucharlo con un poco más de detalle. Sí tiene canciones bonitas pero en general me siguió pareciendo aburrido. La mejor es One Day Like This, seguida de The Bones of You. 2.5 estrellas que bajan porque no lo recordaré mañana.

I'm sorry I just can't seem to get on board with Elbow, they are really dull to one. One Day Like This is a banger for sure but I don't like the rest. The Fix was grating.

After the first listen I thought it sounded interesting. There was a lot going on in the musical arrangement, so worth another listen. During the second listen I realised how sleep-inducing and cringingly pretentious it really was. I understand many others will like this a lot, but I'm just not buying it.

Never heard of this band. After listening to the album it makes sense. Nothing excites me about this.

Some good tracks - an album worth exploring but doesn’t feel like one of the greats

No idea what to expect. Pleasant enough. British. Reminds me of some other bands I don't like. Nice enough as background music but I'm confident none of it will stick in my head past the end of the album, although I did heart "one day like this".

Slow and dull. Not for me. But I did play it all the way through, so I guess it didn’t bug me that much

Very bland. I had problems getting used to the singers voice.

First album of this project that I could not finish. I feel like there was a good album here somewhere, but wherever it was it wasn’t for me.

Very forgettable. Cant remember a single song or even melody

I had never heard of the band prior to being given the album to listen to. I found nothing wrong with the music, but I also could not understand why this album was one out of a 1,001 albums that I needed to listen to before I die. I have no care if I ever listen again.

Nagging vocals get lost in ethereal instrumentals to make this LP end up a repetitive yet forgettable mess.

Brittrr :(

Mid, tf is it doing on this list.

quite boring. I guess you need to be in the right mood.

Eh. The music’s cool but the singer sounds like he’s trying to channel Thom Yorke, Morrissey, and Chris Martin simultaneously and not in a compelling way. Blah.

Dreary.

It was okay.

Light alt rock, calming, melodic 5/10

didn't like it, pretty boring

Drums too soft until they’re the boot stomp/chain type beat

Like Grounds for Divorce. Rest of the album is pretty bad

Boring? I just don’t get why this one is on the list. Quite possible it’s just the hard rocker in me.

I’m finding that I’m just not into art rock. When the songs have structure and melody on this album they’re really good but this seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Too many long, quiet, and droning songs for me to come back to this one regularly.
