Reviews (page 4 of 12)
A lot of new artists for me this week. This one might be my favorite out of them though. Love the melodic vocals. Reminds me of Karen Carpenter. There was a guinea pig named Joni Mitchell on a show Tally and I watched last month. Didn't realize it was named after a musician.

4/5. Not my personal favorite Joni album but still a great time all around. also serves as a good example of the thing I love most about Joni Mitchell’s singing, which is her cadence. She sings in a way that feels just the slightest bit jazzy, moving just a little off-rhythm with the instrumentation which gives a very unique feel to her songs. Decent amount of variety on this one too, you get “raised on robbery” which is a bit more of a rocker or “twisted” which is very bluesy all mixed in with the expected 70’s folk sound.
As a voice and a songstress, she gives beauty and while I might not always choose her style, it is difficult to find fault.
I was genuinely surprised at how much I like this album, though the first few songs instrumentally didn’t do it for me. The writing was consistently great throughout the entire album and more playful than I expected.
Really really good. Almost my first 5. Joni's voice is like honey to me, I loved the storytelling and down to earth human experiences and emotions in the lyricism. I'm excited to hear more from Joni.
One of my favourite albums of all time. A subtle change of direction for Joni. The start of something very special.
Extremely interesting album. Mitchell shows off a lot more jazz influence here, with the songs feeling somewhat free-form despite folkish roots. I definitely want to listen to this again, but I fear I may rate it lower upon a relisten.
An absolutely beautiful record with way too many words crammed into the verses.
Surprising how much great material Joni created for this album. Free Man in Paris is just one example.
Sonically, a very good album with good layering of instruments and vocals, but it could do with a remaster. The songs themselves are all strong, I couldn't point out any weak moments, but as someone who is not a massive country fan, the album did not change this or blow me away, so it gets a strong 4 stars.
Not normally a fan but enjoyed this so much I listened twice
Joni does it again; well written, beautifully performed and chock full of delightful melodies. She's been a really rewarding discovery in this challenge and I'm glad I've dug a little deeper into one of the all-times greats' life's work.
I'm not too familiar with any of Joni Mitchell's music, so I only had a vague idea of what to expect with this album. I thought this album was truly amazing, and I really enjoyed listening to it. And it reminds me how many fantastic artists came out of the Laurel Canyon scene. Joni Mitchell's voice and lyrics are fantastic, and she created some really great piano and guitar arrangements to create a great overall sound. I do think that the second half of the album was stronger than the first, and Raised on Robbery was by far my favorite track on the album. I loved that it was a little bit different that other songs, but it still relied on the elements that made the album as a whole successful. The saxophone playing was what really elevated the song for me, and I thought it complimented the other elements in the song really well. Also Down To You was a close second, I really loved the opening piano melody, and woodwind arrangements. Did I need to hear this before I die? For sure
I've always thought this was Joni Mitchell's most fun album. Not as beautiful and emotionally packed as Blue. But it's a fun album and Joni's jazzy tendencies land perfectly here.
I really enjoyed this album. It was a blend of calm and quiet, but also fun and boppin'
She's got great lyrics and a great voice. What's not to love?
Thursday, so I'm listening at home in the living room. Pretty. Chill.
This was an awesome and refreshing record. There are tons of different styles seamlessly blended together here, and Joni’s voice is really unique.
I’ve probably mentioned that Joni is an acquired taste. This is her most accessible album. It’s also the point where smoking caught up with her and dropped that beautiful voice down a register or so. These songs are easy going and lovely in a way that only the 70’s could have made. She’s a delight in any form but this is definitely one of her better albums. Help Me is just gorgeous. It never gets tiresome.
Having only ever been exposed to Joni Mitchell via Blue, this was such a pleasant surprise. Really lovely stuff. Fav tracks: Court and Spark, Help Me, Just Like This Train. RYM: Y (#694) Saved a song: N
Inspired so many of my favorites, I was way overdue for a listen.
Another great offering from Joni
Joni Mitchell rocks. Always really interesting chord voicing. Great groove and disarming lyrics. Raised on Robbery has always been a favourite and it features some great rock and roll guitar by Robbie Robertson.
I really enjoyed this. Yes, it has almost no choruses, but who needs them anyways?
The Re-Master I listened to on Apple Music sounded phenomenal. A blend of Joni's signature soprano-laden folk and jazz fusion rhythms and arrangements. The stories of heartbreak and people searching for something sometimes brush past gently and at others, cut more deeply. A staple CD in the car when I was growing up.
Very nice. I can see myself listening to this when I need something relaxing in the background.
I enjoyed an upbeat Joni Mitchell
Beautiful
Sehr Spannende Musik und gesag, Es gefällt mir wie es aufgebaut ist
204/1001 Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ I think this is my second favourite Joni album 🖤
Legendary songwriter. Enjoyed this a lot. 4.5.
Absolutely incredible. Standouts for me being Car on a Hill and Down to You. Last few tracks kind of lost me a tiny bit so it’s not perfect
First time ever listening to her, but I definitely like her type of music. I liked the Album more and more as it went on. Didn’t care for the first song or two. I will definitely listen to her other albums! One of my favorite songs from this album was Raised on Robbery.
How can you not love Joni. Such an amazing voice.
Blends Joni's folk sound and lyrics with soft rock and jazz. Her lyrical cadence can be a bit too "runny"/poetic for me at times but the instrumentals are so soothing. (3.5-4)
Incredible to follow up Blue with another set bordering on masterpiece
Wouldn't have looked into Joni Mitchell most likely without this challenge. Really enjoyed this. Liked Help Me, Free Man in Paris, and Car on a Hill. Liked the jazz elements. Didn't realize Phish covered Free Man in Paris too.
Decent
Yah this album was a massive shock. First off, after all the times I’ve heard people talk about Joni, I have never heard anyone mention this album before. Which is crazy cause I think is my favorite Joni album now. It’s so good it has a ton of variety for a folk album and it has so many great songs on it. But everyone always says Blue is her best album, which I respect cause that’s an awesome album. And maybe it’s because Blue has a more defined “sound” but that’s what I love about this album is it feels bold as well as perfectly crafted. Honestly this album was great my only small criticism is I think side b is better than side a but that’s not the end of the world. Next time you hear somebody say blue is their favorite Joni album, ask them when the last time they listened to Court and Spark.
8/10
Beautiful.
Very cool album. Would listen again. Really liked Court and Spark, Help Me, and Trouble Child.
ourt and Spark I think that before properly listening to Joni Mitchell, I felt that her dense poetic lyricism was a bit too contrived for my taste. But this album demonstrated to me that her writing is quite the opposite - so relentlessly honest in her expression that it can be a bit uncomfortable. Listening closely is the only way to listen; there is such a nuance in her relatability. Not to mention how fun her vocal work is - slides and register jumps. And I kinda like the instrumentation of this album - dulcimer and piano work especially - though it feels over-arranged/produced at some points overall… almost a little fusion-y in a way that maybe is where the contrived feeling comes from or gets in the way of her honesty as a poet.
Not generaly a fan of Joni - I find her a bit meandering, tough to grasp her choice of melodies - but this is a better one. Free Man in Paris and Help Me are great, and nothing is awful, she just doesn't always take me along with her. Despite that, very low 4. There shoulf be at least one Joni album here, and this is the best so far.
I mean – sie ist halt einfach unfassbar iconic
Enjoyed it almost as much as Blue
love joni
liked this a lot more than i thought i would
Joni Mitchell - the one who got away, as far as Len Houmous is concerned. Maybe if she had fallen for his advances there wouldn’t have been 34 other wives. So many marriages broke down from the jealousy! 4.4 2/11 Help Me
Nice voice!
Great album, never geard before of the artist but i can say it’s REAL good. I loved the entire album’s sounds but Twisted with its jazz-ish feeling just hit different for me.
Not my normal thing and I was completely unfamiliar with this but I liked it especially when she does things that are jazz inflected rather than jazz. I had to listen a lot for the hooks to get to me but I really like the complete vision. It is distinctly 70s and that adds something for me.
Based on her voice, on the handful of songs I know well and love (Big Yellow Taxi, River, Both Sides Now, California, Chelsea Morning, Raised on Robbery), and on kind of her whole deal, I love Joni Mitchell. If I'd been in 17 in 1974 -- and although I'm old, I'm not that old -- I would definitely have had a crush on her. But only ROR is on this album, and while the rest is good, it's not quite as good as the songs I love. And there's a clunker or two. Anyway, bravo Joni, and I hope we have more albums in the queue.
4/5 - Beautiful album. I only knew Help Me, but Joni usually grabs me with her voice and unusual melodies.
I like her voice it always reminds me of car rides with Weaver
Such a creative sound across the tracklist. Mitchell's voice is an instrument along with the band and free-flowing rhythm and relaxed jazz-rock sound make for a great time.
さらっと聞けるジャズポップ、フォークポップ。 素晴らしいアルバムだけどベストオブベストって感じはしない。

Is there a 40 minute break between the morning and afternoon sessions in the ashes. Yes. Really like this. Simpsons: Yes
Not quite a 5 but still really liked it. In response to Rozza's review... surely any album is a solid 5 when contrasted by watching cricket...
Favorite track(s): Help Me, Car on a Hill, Down to You
Need to finish but honestly a banger
Dark, down. Good
Very pretty. A lot less depressing than I thought it would be. Gets kinda jazzy sometimes, and I like that.
It's a fun record, with great folk and jazz fusions but I still prefer other joni mitchell works
Definitely would listen again.
I’ve been courted and sparked
So many classics on here! Classic Joni voice, 10/10
great vibe for this monday morning. i would like to spend more time with this one and her music in general.
I never liked Joni Mitchell until now. Her songs always seemed annoyingly out of place when they come on the radio, but as a cohesive album, songs I thought I hated make perfect sense. Maybe it’s the strong opening track that explains what a court and spark is. Maybe I’m just ready for her now. Maybe I’ll listen to her other albums. Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Classic Joni.
Joni knows what she's doing
I'm not the biggest Joni fan but I dug this. I can see how she followed it up with The Hissing of Summer Lawns, which I like more. While this album is so mid-'70s California it hurts the main image I had in my head was of a 30-year-old woman dancing around her apartment in a flannel shirt and pajama pants. I'd give it five stars but I found the last track, a version of Twisted, to be annoying and unnecessary. Had to end the album somehow, I guess.
I have never really felt the urge to listen to Joni. Some of her word choices are silly, but wow the music is so well composed. Because of this album I checked out a live set and WOW is her band killer.
Good album with deep lyrics :D
Beautiful voice, nice feelgood music but songs are going a bit in all directions and a bit too jazzy at times. 4.2 stars
this is really good!! i think my favorite track is Raised on Robbery. i didn’t really know any of these beforehand, i’ve listened to the album twice now and i don’t think i dislike any of the songs, i’m not sure if they’re all songs i would listen to all the time but i have really enjoyed this. i like Twisted a lot too. the jazzy folk combo vibe of the album does really work for me.
It was a Joni kinda day.
I love Joni Mitchell’s music, but I found myself inadvertently sticking to a comfort zone of her first five albums, and never branching out to see how her style evolved over time. As a result, aside from “Help Me,” this album was new and refreshing to me. I needn’t have feared her artistic evolution, because I’ve been missing out on a funkier, amped-up Joni Mitchell that I look forward to returning to. I loved almost every track, with the notable exception of the vocalese closing track.
Easy listening, really chill album
Wish I was her
Very thoroughly enjoyed this one, especially for the jazzy takes on her folksy style. Her writing and melodies are top-notch as always. However, in comparison to Blue, there weren't too many "wow" moments and aside from her meandering, often surprising but always beautiful melody, I wished to see more stylistic risks taken. Will be returning.
Loved it until the jazz number at the end.
I knew it would only be a matter of time before Joni Mitchell popped up on this list, and I've always been keen to check out some more of her work, as she's easily one of the most influential songwriters of all time. Well, 'Court and Spark' is such a fitting start, as it's her most accessible release, and there's certainly a rare exquisiteness to her voice. Joni's voice is like that calming, encouraging inner spirit that's always there to remind you that you're loved and appreciated, regardless of how you might be feeling, and there's no denying the influential nature of her voice. Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Bjork, Alanis Morissette, Taylor Swift and countless more no doubt owe plenty to Joni Mitchell for helping forge their own identities. She's even influenced plenty of male vocalists: Prince and Maynard James Keenan [Tool, A Perfect Circle] are two I know of for sure. 'Court and Spark' is such a fine example of Joni's musical prowess. The delicate blend of rock, folk and jazz on songs such as 'Help Me', 'Free Man in Paris' and 'The Same Situation' really stand out to me, and her sharp and witty wordplay across the record ['Down to You' being a perfect example of this] only add to her enigmatic presence as a songwriter. I'm really glad this project has finally given me the motivation to check out Joni Mitchell. She's influenced a number of my favourite artists/bands and yet it's only now I'm really allowing myself to get invested in her work. If 'Court and Spark' is anything to go by, I'm really looking forward to delving deeper! Best songs: Help Me, Free Man in Paris, The Same Situation, Down to You, Raised on Robbery
Great, this definitely has different instrumentation to anything I've heard of hers so far (only blue but) I feel like there's certainly elements of jazz, but sort of that minimalist jazz ('fusion') stuff that was happening in the mid 70s which I really like. obviously she's a brilliant songwriter, for sure one of the best of this era, and quite a like Bob Dylan or Neil Young or someone, the songs are definitely concept or story based, which I like and I imagine probably took immense skill to master. I do feel like there's something about her vocal delivery that stops me from thinking she's my favourite singer ever, as sometimes it feel like she's speaking too fast and just spitting out words, but its still mostly amazing. Favourite songs: all but: jut like this train, raised on robbery. Overall around 7/10
Like this more than I thought I would. Joni is an incredible singer and songwriter
First listen through of this album, and I was a big fan. I had only ever listened to her Blue album, but allegedly, this one was more popular at the time. Loved Raise on Robbery, Court & Spark, and Free Man in Paris. The Carole King influence on this album is very prominent.
It is a classic, but I liked it alot.
Was really excited to get this one after listening to Blue just a few albums ago. Very impressed with her vocal control. Every moment is taken advantage of and every moment is so calculated and intentional. I've been enjoying jazz lately, so I loved the heavy jazz influence. I enjoyed the lyrics on this album more than Blue. Loved the harmonies and creativity. I felt like there was an overall...layer missing to this. More "depth of sound" or maybe just more production would have gone a long way. I still enjoyed the stripped-down vibe. Joni is becoming one of my favorite singer-songwriters. So much talent. 3.8/5
I loved this one. She’s always a treat to listen to
It's good. But nothing has stuck so far other than it is nice to listen to Joni Mitchell sing. Raised On Robbery just slapped me in the face. Twisted did, too. But not in the same way.
I've never really listened to Joni Mitchell a lot. My mom always said she was a favorite when she was in college, and I can see why. This album was just a joy to listen to. I feel like the swells in the music, especially in Down to You were super enjoyable. I also love whenever strings or brass is in music, and the use in the album wasn't crazy to take over the song, but really complimented well throughout.
Love Joni. Another great album.
Very soothing to listen to
Top 3 Joni for sure. 8/10
I liked this album a bunch. Joni is a really interesting woman and her songwritting is just beautiful. The instruments in the back are killer on this. Reminds me of Astral Weeks.
Really really good honestly love the instrument and stuff
Not heard this cut from Joni before. It’s now one of my favourites.
Joni, for me, is one of the true greats. A melodic and lyrical genius, really. This is a great record, not at the level of others of hers, though. Also pretty different, she went down a new road with this one. Still, a great record.
I am digging Joni's amazing lyrics, and the subdued guitar and riffs behind her are additive to the experience. Risk, love, travel. Definitely expressing lived experience. Peoples Parties doesn't exactly do it for me, there's something off about the cadence and sound, but the first 3 tracks are certified bangers. The Same Situation is so much more, the lyrics and rising sound feels right. Just like this train is pretty groovy but some nice vocal notes. The thematic little flourishes that are the same across sounds gives some continuity to this album. Raised on Robbery is a nice counter note of some upbeat sounds, and I'm enjoying what I think is a nose harp? Joni Mitchell's voice really carries parts of this album. Twisted got the vibe of a generation past, reminiscent of songs from the 40s? 50s? Kind of a fun song!
I love the depth Joni's voice develops later in her career. Just feels so warm and buttery compared to her higher range early career stuff.
Very enjoyable record. I listened to it inside a bus traveling through the southern Brazilian countryside. It's no Blue, but her voice is always a treat. Will relisten.
i like joni but the jazzy stuff on here so excellent. def my fav from her
It's such a beautiful album
haim gets so much lyrical inspo from joni mitchell which must be why i love them so much.
Sweet little peaceful album 😊
Her voice/vocal style makes every track instantly hers. This one is so interesting as a bridge from Blue to Hissing of Summer Lawns. I don't think I like it as much as those but there's not a bad track on here. Rating: 4.3
#183/1001. Joni somewhere between folk, jazz and the inevitable 80s sonic experimentation (read: outdated and overused synths). Somehow this album feels like it is on transition to something or from something. But so are we all all the time, right? The thing which bothers me most is the amount of stories and text. Feels like she just has too much to recount and using songs to do that works sometimes, sometimes not. Our perhaps it is only me, who wouldn't / couldn't pay attention for every small and big story. Well or might be a good reason to revisit.
Great album again, worth another listen for sure. 4.5
Most of the Joni Mitchell I have heard is just classic folk which I always like. But this album seemed a bit more experimental with Jazz. I really enjoyed this and I think I will find myself coming back to listen to it in the future.
Great melodies and lyrics
Very nice
Did not know anything about this Joni Mitchell album for some reason and it is a shame. Her ethereal voice goes so well with court And Spark more jazzy tone.
79/100. A good and well-crafted album, though for me, it felt a bit repetitive in its overall sound. That said, the jazzy, blues-influenced vibe that emerges toward the end really stood out and added a refreshing shift in tone.
Ensimmäinen Jonin levy alusta loppuun. Oli hyvä. Helppo 3,75/5.
Gorgeous vocals. Like listening to honey.
Music and singing coming together perfectly, none of them overpower each other. Very fun to listen to. 4/5
First actual experience listening to a Joni Mitchell album! Not sure why I haven't delved in, but here we are! It's great music. I guess I would call it Folk-Rock by and large? There's some orchestral arrangements as well though, and a lot going on musically in general, there's even a jazz number! The lyrics are also, a real strong point, but that's Joni's calling card. Some more experimental stuff in here, but a lot is fairly straightforward, with Joni's ethereal voice layered over top. Had a good time, though I don't know if I really connected with it enough to give it a five. Think it'll be something I play through some more though.
She is classic but too much annoys me. Am I a bad person. If not for all the other bad albums this would probably be a 3
Put simply, I like Mitchell’s voice and songwriting so I like this. I hadn’t heard it in full before and appreciated the breadth of sounds and her unusual melodies. Dense for its brief runtime.
Enjoy her voice every time a bit more. Nice ballads Help me as my favorite song and Twisted that has nothing to do with the rest of the album
This is a great lazy Sunday morning record, the original acoustic cafe music. Mostly folk rock with a couple of jazz leaning tunes and one fantastic boogie-woogie sounding song, Raised on Robbery. Joni’s voice is unique and interesting and she plays the piano beautifully. I really enjoyed this album.
Outstanding album. I've never listened to Joni Mitchell, perhaps knew one or two of her songs, never thought much of them but turns out I was missing out. Lovely voice, the fusion of jazz and folk is unique and interesting, really enjoyed the entire album. Looking forward exploring more of her music.
Another gem from Joni.
Enjoyed that.
I was a little dismissive about this when it popped up this morning. I was only half paying attention to the first few tracks, but it managed to pull me back in the second half. I gave it a more intentional listen and, to my surprise, I enjoyed this more than I did Blue. I understand that this came out later but hearing this first might have positively changed my mind about Blue and Joni as an artist. The production is very good across the album, and there's a lot of depth to explore - there are additional instruments and subtle layers that are easy to miss if you're not listening for them. I think her songwriting style (unstructured, unbothered to tie itself to choruses) lends itself to jazz and the album really comes alive when it gets jazzy in the backend. Overall, I prefer the second half of this album but that doesn't look like a popular opinion, based on the Spotify listen counts. It’s got everything I'd need in a ‘weekend morning’ record and I’d consider putting it in my rotation.
It's obviously Joni Mitchell, but the music has a lot of variation. Some interesting sounds and rhythms explored.
The only Joni Mitchell album I had heard was Blue, and this one further shows how incredible of a songwrite she is. My favorite tracks were Help Me, Just Like this Train, Raised on robbery
i could listen to this in the background nice and light
Gorgeous first two thirds! Favourite tracks: Court And Spark, Free Man In Paris, People's Parties, Down To You
O marco deste disco é o refinamento.
Only ever heard the name, so this was my first experience with Joni and this album exceeded my expectations. I'll probably listen again soon.
Ya know, that was just plain pleasant
Very good
Quintessential Joni Mitchell. Not as good as Blue.
Great album! I haven’t heard this in ages and even then only heard a couple of times so great to listen to it again. Such a great singer and songwriter! …and holy crap, Cheech and Chong are on the last song!
I love Joni Mitchell
This was actually pretty good. The last album I listened to from her was decent, but I couldn’t get around the sound of her voice. As for this one, the music aspect was really good, and I enjoyed the sound of her voice better on this one as well.
Looking forward to this, because I love Joni Mitchell. Court and Spark - 7/10. Very solid, typical of Ms. Mitchell's work, rich vocals, simple harmonies. Help Me - 10/10. Rich, velvety sound. This song is one of the reasons I love Joni Mitchell. Free Man in Paris - 8/10. Very pure vocals, simple melody and harmony. People's Parties - 8/10. Nice bass work, excellent guitar, vocals use a lot of nice changes of pace. The Same Situation - 7/10. I would have liked this song better if it had stayed nothing more than Joni Mitchell and a piano (like the beginning). Car on a Hill - 7/10. Very much the same as the other songs on the album. Down to You - 8/10. Captures the feeling of being lonely well. A little over-instrumented in places. Just Like This Train - 8/10. Very similar to the rest of this album. Raised on Robbery - 8/10. More upbeat than I'm used to from Joni. Feels very 1950s rock to me. Trouble Child - 7/10. Good, but not great. Twisted - 10/10. Jazz feel. Not at all what I expected, and I like it.
Overall: 7/10 I've been hearing about Joni Mitchell for years now but never really had the interest in seeking out her music for some reason. Now that I've listened to some of it, I think it's pretty good! She has a nice voice, there's some pleasant harmonies on this album and some pretty instrumentation as well. I sadly haven't been able to dive deep into her lyrics today but I probably will at some point. For now, this was a solid album that I can see myself relistening to in the future. Fav Song: Help Me
Great album. Wonderful voice. Would listen to again.
This was kinda just what I needed to listen to tonight. This album is calm, beautiful, subtle, and intricate. The kind of album that isn’t immediately rewarding but evidently is incredibly special and becomes one of your favorites over time. Reach out in 5 years and ask me about my feelings on this album. I am confident it’ll be one of my favorites. As for now, I still have only wonderful things to say about it, and I’m now very excited to listen Joni’s other projects.
Going through this list I'm really looking for 5* albums that I've never heard before and I thought this was going to be a contender based on the opening lines of the first song. Unfortunately it does not quite sustain this level and whilst the album is a great easy listen it does loses its way on the later jazzier tracks. Beautiful voice tho.
I am once again back on my Joni Mitchell grind, this time I am covering her "return to form" with 1974's Court and Spark. I can definitely tell a difference in sound between this and For the Roses that continue to cement that project being just great, while Court and Spark has hints of something much more spectacular and consistent throughout its' entire 36 minute tracklist. Maybe it is how well everything flows together here or all the new instrumentation Joni is throwing into her songs, regardless this album pops and once again blows my mind with how high of quality she is able to continuously pump out since her debut album. There is surprisingly a good bit of variety with the tracks here, but for the most part if you like Joni doing her own thing solo then there is plenty here for just that. Down to You has these subtle yet much needed orchestra compositions that weave in and out of the track's 5 minutes and 36 second runtime that make it feel like a whole experience in itself. Whether it is the strings, brass, woodwind, or even the simple piano parts, this track feels so cinematic and yet so touching and personal with each note. Twisted on the other hand takes a very different approach while using a trumpet to make for a very fun and lighthearted track that very much strays away from anything Joni has done before. It is punchy, funny, and at times very unserious with itself while still feeling very lyrically dense and captivating with just how Joni works herself into the music. Overall Court and Spark is a blast of fresh air in a discography full of refreshing and top notch Singer-Songwriter music. Joni really doesn't miss and it seems her streak doesn't quite end here which is super exciting.
Really nice easy listening also great to hear jonis voice. Wouldn't say it was my favorite album though
I was impressed with how modern this album sounded, Joni Mitchell was definitely ahead of her time. I can head a ton of influence this album has had on new music. When I think of Joni Mitchell I think of her solo with an acoustic guitar but I was super impressed with the complexity and all the layers of arrangements across this album. I would probably need to listen to this a few times to fully get all the pieces, I most likely will dig this out again soon to do just that.
4,5
Obviously not as heart wrenching as Blue but still very pretty nonetheless. She incorporates the jazz elements very well into her original style. She remains a very intelligent writer
I like her voice, but the songs themselves were a little forgettable.
Sweet record and very good songs, first time listening to a full Joni Mitchell album. Will definitely check out more.
3.5
Double joni! this one's good just it's not what I expect from joni? I prefer her more simpler works, but this one's still good.
Banger alert. Fun, good vocals, great arrangements, good lyrics!!! It falls apart in some of the jazz scatty stuff for me but this is so much better than I was expecting when I rolled it. Very enjoyable.
Enjoyed the jazzier, bluesier elements. Crisp and concise
Неплохо, немного скучновато, но под конец разошлась вроде. Наверное там умные стихи, но я как всегда не могу это оценить по достоинству
A fantastic album, though I'm more of a BLUE fan.
My dad was a big Joni fan and I obviously have loved her voice since small times but I think I always struggled with her because she's very jazz-influenced, even with her early acoustic stuff. I've warmed up to jazz in general as I've gotten older, (I still think it mostly sucks, but I can appreciate what people see in it) but I still have a hard time on first blush. That said, very good on re-listen. And no problematic blackface on this album cover!
8/10 Despite being fairly obsessed with Blue, Court and Spark is not an album that I’ve listened to that many times. I’ve spun it the odd time here and there, but it’s never had as much airplay as it probably deserves. I think part of the reason for that is that I typically prefer a more sparse orchestration than this for her work. The more full band sound can take away a bit of the intimacy that’s inherent in her best work, and it doesn’t quite get its hooks into me in the same way. With that being said, this is still a great album. Joni composes in a very non-traditional way, with her combination of chord choices and rhythmic delivery often providing something counter to the obvious. That could go one of two ways, but with Joni it’s that little element of surprise and wonder that keeps me engaged. Her songs are also frequently one narrative thread, rather than a standard verse, chorus, verse structure, but for me, that just takes me on a wonderful journey, alongside the previously mentioned choices she makes in her composition, and it doesn’t need the more traditional structure to centre things. There are some really fantastic tracks here and I really enjoyed giving it a more close inspection, but I do feel that, as a whole, this album is just a little bit disorganised. It stylistically bounces around a touch too much, with the final three tracks almost feeing like they don’t quite gel with the rest of the album. There’s also the odd lull here and there that allowed my attention to drift just a little bit. The funny thing is, I’ve finished listening to this, only to find myself singing songs from Blue instead. I’ve really enjoyed this and I’ll definitely be back, but I’ll probably stick on Blue first. Sorry Joni. Court And Spark - I love Joni’s piano playing. She makes some really interesting chord choices, and her style is so unmistakably her. It’s a wonderful composition, and her voice is so good as always. Her songs can often be so fleeting, but somehow also have so much to say. Help Me - While my preference for Joni tends to be her more bare-bones arrangements, there’s so much quality in this song. Loads of little bits of instrumentation and rhythmic choices that are so engaging to the ear. It’s got drive and groove, but it’s also so smooth. Free Man In Paris - This is more rocky than I was expecting. Again, there are some really lovely little riffs and lines that reward deep listening. The momentum of the track is excellent and her vocal is so good, particularly the control of her pitch sweeps. The rhythmic stops sections are just brilliant too. People's Parties - This is a bit of a prototype of the kind of sound she’d explore in more depth on Hejira. It doesn’t feel as refined as that album, but there are some really great moments here. She approaches her vocal rhythms in such a great way in which lines can roll from one to the next over parts of bars, rather than always in full bar counts, which is such a great way for the cadence of the vocal to change across a verse. The Same Situation - Some of the sound design here is so nice. The effect on the guitar (I think? Sounds like a synth) in the background adds a beautiful, subtle depth. The song kind of meanders along, but it’s the meandering of a lazy walk in a picturesque landscape, rather than anything aimless. Car On A Hill - This has got a really pretty start and then we get some really unexpected chord changes as we move into the delightfully odd middle section. It’s perhaps a little out of place, but I feel like weird quirks like that should be celebrated. Some gorgeous vocal harmonies in this ones too. Down To You - Things are more stripped back to begin with, just letting the piano and vocal shine. And then there’s this tension that builds, and floats away before we’re back to the sparsity. It’s hard to pin this one down as it drifts and shifts as it goes along. Some moments of pure beauty that drift away from some almost uncomfortable moments of tension. It’s almost a collage of musical ideas. Just Like This Train - This is just very beautiful. She wanders her way through the song which sort of evolves as it goes, with interesting changes to rhythm and feel that might last for a bar or too, but just tweak that feel and inject such flavour to proceedings, but never derail the thrust of the song. Raised On Robbery - This is quite a change. It’s a pretty straight rocker, but it’s so good. There’s some grit to it, but not too much, and it’s got so much drive. Love her vocal delivery again. Perhaps an odd change of pace in the context of the album, but why not? Trouble Child - More typically Joni now. There’s some beautiful guitar playing here and the cadence of her compositional choices are so satisfying, injecting these little off kilter moments that bookmark some impressively pretty passages. Great little jazzy edges here and there too. Twisted - And now we’re pretty much full-on jazz. It’s a cover, but it shows a different side to Joni’s vocal. She’s so, so good. The little bits of vibrato, the switch between spoken and sung delivery, and those little staccato runs. Excellent.
Tällä LegendaLadylla on huikea ääni ja vaikka tuotanto vähän samankaltaista onkin niin paljon tosi mageita veisuja.
Tosi mukavaa kuunneltavaa ja artisti menee suosikkeihin. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Olipas kivaa musaa! Tätä tulee varmasti kuunneltua enemmänkin!
This is the second Joni Mitchell album I’ve been given in the last month. I’m not complaining though, I just think it’s a strange coincidence. Her albums are pretty far away from what I’d choose to listen to normally, but they just seem to work for me. I had more fun with this one than Blue!
Canadian gold
pleasant, love Help me.
Although, Joni’s voice isn’t really my cup of tea, I did enjoy the lyrics and the variety of the music. That last song?! 😮💨
Joni at her best. Classic album!
The Good: Joni Mitchell is back! The Bad: I think that the court still hasn’t managed to pass judgement… The Ugly: No spark… at all… So yeah, after a very pleasant listen to Cafe Blue, I think, this album was a nice skip session for me. It is possible that this is due to me becoming more and more picky when it comes to albums I don’t know… And I feel bad, because I was really looking forward to this album… maybe I should give it another spin? Okay, I just listened to the album again, and here’s what is critical about my viewpoint now… right before listening to Joni, I was listening to the album of the day, by a band called Red Snapper… which was absolutely not up my alley… and now, Court and Spark is getting the following score from me 4 1/4* Yup… way to go Joni!!!
Second Joni record, and second time being pleasantly surprised. This ones got the toe-tappin happy slappin vibes to it that get em goin wild. Not all great, but when it's great it's something special.
Very enjoyable and finally understanding what the fuss is about with Joni Mitchell. Unique and genre defying. There’s enough variation here to never get bored. Also her voice sounds a lot like Weyes Blood right? Or I suppose Weyes Blood sounds like Joni. Would listen again, would recommend
4.8
Listened to this multiple times today; this is good and chill
Sometimes forget how stellar Joni was as a singer/songwriter back in the day
It's a 70s Joni Mitchell album so of course I liked it. The middle is a little cruise controly, but still a really good album.
This one feels like a solid 4 to 5 star. Similar to Tapestry, lovely 70s soft rock feel where every song sounds intentional. This is my first time listening to her as well, it’s fantastic. The vocals, instrumental and everything plays out great.
Ok Maynard James Keenan I see you.
Good, more angular than Blue.
Very pleasant listening!
I was worried this was going to be jazz Joni and luckily that was just the last track. Great instrumentation and thoroughly enjoyable.
Joni Mitchell had such an interesting approach to tunes and praying. Maybe it's just what I'm used to but it makes it all sounds very fresh and intriguing. I'm gonna have to listen to this one a few more times.
This feels like Joni's Highway 61. Her folk roots are intact but there's fuller instrumenation/some electric and jazz rock influences. Not my personal favorite but the worst Joni Mitchell is better than most of the best of anyone else.
Really beautiful album, she has a wonderful voice, I did find myself getting a tad bored towards the end but I still think this is special
A nice, mellow folk rock album. This has beautiful piano playing and instrumentals, and Mitchell has a good voice. This album has a nice vibe and good lyrics. Raised on Robbery was pretty fun.
Приятный синтез поп-рока, легкого джаза, фолка. Такой очень канадский альбом (из того, что я слышал).
so good it's not even fair
Joni Mitchell is one of my favourite artists but Court and Spark was not an album I would ever reach for - and I was wrong! Joni might just be the greatest songwriter of all time!
really good stuff
Ikke så intens som Hejira og Blue, men stadig virkelig melodiøs og en gudesmuk stemme som altid
Endnu en banger Joni Mitchell plade. Ingen af dem vi har haft har rigtig lydt ens hvilket er super fedt!
Beautiful voice and songs.
Some really good tracks on this
Is there a bad Joni Mitchell album out there? If there is I have never listened to one. Just really solid work here love the infusion of Jazz to the more tradional folk sound. Joni is an all time clever lyrcist moving from cleaver funny wordplay to profound statements in the space of a few lines sometimes. No real direct favorite tracks here the whole thing works as a whole for me so hard to pry out any particular songs from this one. Anyway had a great time with it hope there is more of her in here.
Joni Mitchell never really did it for me but after this, I finally get it. Favs: "Raised on Robbery"
Non proprio il mio genere preferito, però mi è comunque piaciuto molto, mood molto country e leggero, top come musica di sottofondo, canzone preferita down to you a mani basse
Joni - so fun playful and beautiful voice. Makes me happy! 7.0
I’m with the masses on this one. I think it is a far more accessible Joni while also being artistic. She flutters her voice far less while showing off her incredible control. The music is chiefly more interesting than prior albums, far more involved and expansive. The first half of the album is groovy. The second half has some softer jazz elements: Car on Hill even feels like Steely Dan for a second.
Damn Joni
Powiedziałam to raz i powiem to znowu: Kocham Joni Mitchell. Ta płyta czasami za mocno skręca w stronę jazzu, aby stać się moją ulubioną. Ale wciąż ma w sobie melodyjny głos Joni i jej cudowne folkowe ballady. Niesamowity talent i jeszcze większa wrażliwość 8/10
I like the vibe of the album, though some of the songs seemed a little same-y. I still enjoyed it, all the same. Felt a little more '60s than '70s, but that could be my ignorance showing. The last song caught me by surprise, in a good way?
People's Party- Sentiment hits quite hard, personal Car on the Hill- Instrumentation is great, really highlights how the album "feels". Mixed with a lot of space, feels like more moving parts than there are. Down to You- Another sentimental one, themes of love, longing, melancholic self talk and stories "externalized" very prominent on the album. Stopped thinking and just listened. Good album, plan to revisit.
Folk music is a hit or miss with me. This one hit the right spot.
Such amazing soul and emotion in her voice. I really loved this album and there are songs on it that will stick with me for a long time. Best Track: Help Me
This was the first of her jazz-inflected albums and the arrangements are more intricate. While I prefer "Blue" and her other more straight acoustic stuff, this album has some great songs--"Help Me," "Free Man in Paris," "Raised on Roberry," "Just Like a Train"-- that it's almost a greatest hits album. Lyrically, it's as great as ever. Didn't know about the whole blackface thing and her saying she feels like she has a "black soul." While probably misguided, It doesn't take away from my appreciation of this album and her body of work.
Joni Mitchell captivates with strong storytelling ability and raw and honest lyrics. The music, combining singer-songwriter folk with jazz, is wonderfully warm and inviting, if a little bit ballad-heavy and slow for my taste. But the soul of the album lies in her ability to wrap you in her world and paint a picture, and I think the music serves her well in that regard.
Never really delved into Joni Mitchell before. Enjoyed it.
joni, girl, it's crazy that you have an entire wiki page to your blackface controversies because this album goes hard af
Pretty solid album by Joni. great production and musically very strong. The last song on the album is a cover of something I haven't heard in some years.
I am surprised how much I liked this one! I went into it sort of expecting a 'good' but 3-star album to me, just on account of it being okay acoustic stuff, but it had a lot more zing to it than that. Cool stuff!
What a phenomenal album. So many things off here that I knew but didn't even know I knew. Great stuff.
Great great stuff from an all-time great songwriter. Joni manages to pack a variety of sounds in here and pull them all off excellently, with a voice that never wavers.
What a neat surprise! I dreaded this seeing the singer-songwriter tag but there were some really cool instrumental things happening as well. I particularly liked the first two songs, and the last three. It got to be kind of boring in the middle but still beautiful. Trouble Child into Twisted was kinda incredible.
I have been Jonipilled!!!! Who knew having vodka at 3 years old could make you such a genius Standouts: Help Me • Car on a Hill • Down to You • Trouble Child • Twisted
If you like Joni Mitchell, you'll like this Joni Mitchell. Maybe if we could cede an album or two from some of the artists who have multiple entries on this list to newer artists, we could have a more expansive definition of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. This is my fourth Mitchell review for the list with probably a fifth coming. Mitchell's a gifted songwriter with an amazing voice, and I bet this is many people's favorite or second favorite record of hers, but Court And Spark doesn't reveal anything to me that the other albums haven't already.
Alla singer song writers gudmor. Fantastiska låtar, men jag blir inte engagerad tyvärr. Fyra (svag)
Super chill listen, in line with Jim Croce and other songwriters of that era. Really enjoyed it
Great variety in this record. Every track scratches a different itch. I enjoyed the traditional pop-inspired tracks found in the latter part of this record. Favourite Track(s): Raised on Robbery, Twisted Least Favourite Track(s): Car on a Hill
I'm liking the folk singer-songwriter sound of this. And importantly, the sound feels modern; there are a few tracks where the instrumentation places it firmly in the 70s, but many of these songs feel like they could've been produced today.

I liked it!
The next step of my journey exploring Joni Mitchell, and after the sample size of a singular listen to both albums, I think I'd have this over Hejira as the one I'd be more likely to reach for at the moment. Whilst I very much enjoyed the latter as well, this one felt a bit more accessible and optimistic in tone, with the folk and pop elements of her sound taking greater urgency. There are still hints of the jazzy direction which would be amplified on Hejira, particularly channeled through the bass arrangements, but whilst the latter gave off the vibe of an album that you'd chuck on as an accompaniment to a cozy winter evening indoors, this is the Yang to Hejira's Yin as one more suited for a stroll in the summer. Consider me a newly enlightened fan.
This is one of Joni's best records. It's beautiful, meandering, and definitely jazzier than her other works. It's no "Blue" or "Hejira," but it's a classic, nonetheless. 8/10
Pretty darn good
Free man in Paris is a great song.
Overall it’s a pleasant listen. She did a lot of registration changes. Her voice is good but does sound a bit old school. I still really like her voice though. Music wise nothing really stands out but nothing goes wrong either. The album is reasonably diverse and well produced (considering it was released in 1974..). Is Phoebe Buffay based on Joni Mitchell???
This was a thousand times better than her album Hejira. Upbeat and melodic
I like this album, but I love Blue.
Nice folky pop - I have always loved Joni Mitchell butonly really know the album Clouds. This one resonates less with me though. Borderline 3-4.
Court and Spark – Joni Mitchell (1974) | Folk Rock / Jazz Pop | Avg: 7.82 | Favorite Song: “Twisted” Court and Spark feels like Joni at her most poised—emotionally articulate, melodically rich, and beginning to embrace jazz without losing her folk-rooted storytelling. “Twisted” ended up being the standout for me, and I know that might raise some eyebrows considering it’s a cover, but her delivery and that sly, breezy energy made it unforgettable. Overall, the album is consistently strong, with tracks like “Help Me,” “Free Man in Paris,” and “People’s Parties” balancing intimacy and complexity without ever tipping too far in either direction. There’s a softness to this record, but it’s never dull. Joni’s voice is in complete control here. She's able to slip between conversational and soaring within a single phrase, and the arrangements support her perfectly. Even the more subtle tracks hold their own, and the one or two dips aren’t due to lack of quality, just less emotional resonance by comparison. Court and Spark doesn’t try to dazzle, but that's the charm of this record. It’s a confident shift toward a more refined sound, and she pulls it off with grace.
This is a solid album! I didn't know Joni Mitchell but I really enjoyed her voice and the instrumentation. A good mix of musical ideas, folksy, jazzy and sometimes poppy. Didn't quite rise to a 5 star for me, but I'm looking forward to hearing more of her! It was also interesting reading about her, and shocking to see her blackface pic on Wikipedia. The 80s were definitely a different era. Standouts: Help Me, Free Man in Paris, Raised on Robbery, Twisted. Rating: 4.25/5
nice vibe
Very good album. In many ways, it epitomizes that 70s soft rock sound and yet has a sound all its own. Mitchell just such a rich, sweet voice. I think that is her best album.
Lush, smooth, and quietly complex, 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘬 captures a songwriter in full control of her craft. The arrangements shimmer with soft jazz and California pop, while the lyrics remain sharp, observant, and emotionally precise. It’s an album that wears its sophistication lightly — never showy, always honest. A graceful balance of intimacy and polish.
3.5 - objectively this is made by a VERY talented musician and it was an eclectic album with some cool transitions. that said, there was a clear lack of hooks and none of the songs felt particularly memorable
Mitchell is better when a big piano plays such a prominent role. I like that album!
Wow !
Really good! Nice and chill blues-y folky. Big fan.
love love lov pastorious
I am not a fan of JM, but I recognize why she is popular and helped shape and define an era in music and culture. I also recognize the quality and importance of this album, hence my high rating. I never go out of my way to listen to Joni; I often don't like her voice and don't love all of her lyrics, BUT recognize that's a me thing. I will say, I added Raised on Robbery to my Classic Rock playlist. And I will say, I did not dislike listening to this album, and wouldn't even be upset if I had to listen to it again.
Clever and fun
This spark is courting my wife for a trip to Greece
Surprisingly good
Ohhhh Joni Mitchell, I love you.
I love folk-y music, and this 100% scratches that itch for me. Not sure if I should call it folk-pop? Or something else? At any rate, this record sounds impressively not dated, and is incredibly beautiful and simultaneously catchy, too. I know Blue is another Joni Mitchell record that is highly regarded, so I'm looking forward to checking that one out next.
If I listen to Joni, I usually listen to Blue, which is easily a 5/5 album for me as well as anyone with ears. But from this album, I've only ever listened to "Just Like This Train," which was recommended to me by my dear step-grandmother Sheryl. I was so obsessed with that song for months and I still listen regularly because it's so beautiful, delicate, and sort of funny. "Watching your hairline recede, my vain darlin'" is always a good line. But I enjoyed this album thoroughly, perhaps not as much because I listened quite passively while browsing Ulta, but I'll give it a solid 4.5 out of 5... I especially liked Court And Spark and Twister. Twister was unusual, I thought, for a Joni song... I haven't listened to her whole discography, but I didn't think of her as particularly jazzy and was surprised to hear other voices featured since I usually consider her songs to be very private confessional type songs, like she's writing poetry in a quaint leather-bound diary. Anyways, It was nice! I like Joni Mitchell despite her sort of spotty track record with... blackface? Well... Ok. It was a great album.
Lovely Joni ❤️
OMGG me gustó bastante!!
Good stuff.
So much to like about his album. Whilst the first half of the album could be accused of being a but samey & allowing the mind to drift it was a really strong finish from the jazz infused Twisted to the finger tapping Raised on Robbery
Hidden gem
I dig this but the 3 that follow this are my favourite Joni
i think joni mitchell is so cool and she consistently makes some of the coolest music i've ever heard. the instrumentation and composition of these songs make me so happy. she is my personal jesus
Good. Have this one on vinyl
I enjoyed the more upbeat songs and the lyricism is one of her finest qualities. My favorite song was help me
Decent album. I like the folk sounds of it and how chill it was. Could imagine playing it while driving in the countryside on a sunny day in the summer
нежно мягко приятно
so lovely
Good folk music.
Great!
Another solid Joni Mitchell album about being lonely and horny on main. Lovely tunes and gorgeous vocal stylings. Pretty interesting album closing with Raised on Robbery, Trouble Child, and Twisted in a row. Better'n most.
The lyrics are wonderful and she has a unique voice that fits them well, but it does get a little repetitive.
Beautiful album. I do think, however it starts off stronger than it finishes. Really enjoyed listening to it though and will definitely listen again.
Joni Mitchell has a glorious voice that pairs so well with her amazing lyrics. So good.
Likte instrumenteringen overall. Mange flotte rytmiske finurligheter. Favorittlåter: Help Me og Car on a Hill.
Not as good as Blue, but it's Joni Mitchell so it's still miles ahead of a lot of albums on this list. The last few tracks started veering into a kind of swing-y 1940s sound, which was cool.
Very pleasant to the ear 7/10
good vibes on this, good instrumentation and vocals and lyricism, would listen to it again
Great album. Showcases her voice while a little more life than in Blue.
good folk pop album! not much to say here my favorite was raised on robbery 4/5
Great
I know some Joni Mitchell songs, but had no idea how solid her whole album would be. She has a great voice and really unique delivery across the album. The sound varies a lot despite it mostly just being singer songwriter stuff. I like the name Joni if that matters. Almost able to pull off a deez nuts style joke with it. Joni ? Who’s Joni? Jo- neez nuts kinda thing but not quite. Jodi would be better for that, gonna keep that in mind. 4/5
3.5 stars.
So good.
80% Best: Help Me; Raised On Robbery; Trouble Child Must-Hear? Maybe
Fav songs: Help Me; Raised on Robbery JM is impressive as a songwriter and singer. I have not made any effort to look into her music since folk isn't my favorite genre. This is an engaging album and breeze to listen to. It's not really my thing but credit where it is due. Blue will come up at some point and I look forward to it.
very enjoyable
Is this the best Joni Mitchell album? No. But it's Joni, so even her worst is other people's best. Some of these tracks feel a bit lyrically overstuffed, but she's a storyteller at heart, so it's hard to mind too much. Vocally, she's sensational. A true master of vocal flow and power. It's really refreshing to hear such a healthy, full sound that can pull of so many unique vocal colours. I'm also a huge fan of the instrumentation choices here. You can really hear her evolution into jazz. Highlights: Court and Spark - I just really love the vocal line here - beautiful and timeless Help Me - just an excellent track with great vocal freedom Down to You - brilliantly complex writing here - the harmonies are magical and the instrumental interlude is about as close to perfect as anything she's ever written. I love how texturally complex this is.
Groovy tunes and all round well put together album. I love how we’re unsure what’s next with the vocals, the lack of chorus sets this album apart. Favourite track: help me
Great album! A bit too noodle-y at times to be a five star, but it lives up to its reputation as an all-timer.
joni kinda jazzy
It’s a jazzier Joni Mitchell, but still very sleepy and soothing. Absolutely pleasant to listen to while not exactly life altering.
Really enjoyed this
Such a classic album. Love raised on robbery and twisted. Songs all flow so well together.
Really fricken good
el primero que escucho de electric joni. muy bien.
Fav: Raised On Robbery Least Fav: Court And Spark I think the jazzier she makes her music, the more I like it
I love Joni's early stripped-down folk and her later jazzy experimentation. This was right in the middle and a little less distinctive.
I don't l know how to say what want to say about this album with any eloquence, so I'll just write and let other judge. Joni Mitchell's voice is great. I don't know that I could ever confuse anyone for Mitchell or vice versa. I understand that she may have started as a folk artist, and while her lyrics are quite poetic in that folk vein, musically, by this point she is beyond folk. Mitchell is all chamber pop and breezy jazz, and balances the tension between these disciplines (and other experiments with rock, funk, and twangy country sounds) exceptionally well. I enjoy Mitchell's voice and vocal style enough that I would listen to her sing the ingredients from a soup can if set to nice enough music.
