Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Full of energy and competence
Dont normally listen to is metal, but I enjoyed a few of the songs from the album.
intense!
Heavy heavy stuff. Obviously this ain’t my scene, but can definitely appreciate the artistry!
Not my style, but short enough to listen through. The song Scare Crow got elements of Prince and the Smiths. Interesting.
Not really my taste. However, I found some tracks quite interesting. (5/10) Favorite Track: Jesus Built My Hotrod
Definitely a left field bat. But overall I didn’t mind.
Not my bag, but surprisingly listenable.
Bepaalde nummers vond ik goed, andere vond ik totaal niet goed...
Kinda late but here goes. This is not up my alley at all so far. I feel like this is what right wing school shooters listen to before doing their thing. Especially that bush 1 “nwo” sample. Feels like what an asshole listens to. “Just one fix” reminds me of a Metallica song so far. Scratch that. Wiki says du hast. And yea that’s it. Sounds the same. “Hero” does sound thrashy so far. This is admittedly more thrashy than I thought. That’s probably a good thing even though it’s not my fav genre. It’s better than what I expected from “industrial metal”. The guitar tone is pretty vibey on “scare crow”. Listening in my iPad speakers right now but I can kinda feel the buzz from them. Pretty cool there. Not to sound like a grumpy old person but the last two tracks are almost pure noise. Not that that’s a bad thing necessarily but it feels very different from the rest. I had to take a pause before them to celebrate my moms bday and what I came back to sounded like a whole different album.
Decent, never usually listen to metal music but this had a nice sound. 3***
not at all something i'd ever listen to on my own or probably again, but i can see why people would like this and i did somewhat enjoy it.
Very angry, but it was okay
Good intro to metal
this was a fav when I was a kiddo....N.W.O. so appropriate for 2020
Good ole industrial metal. like rammstein but less german
I actually don’t hate this as much as I thought I would. I wouldn’t listen to it on my own but it’s much more palatable than I thought
yeah not really what im looking for when i have a migraine
Nothing better than industrial metal. Not a fan. 3.5/10 Top song NWO
As fair as heavy metal goes I enjoyed this much more than Slayer. Thought Jesus Built my Hotrod was great lol
I like me some harder music, but this is not so Intriguing
Ok, did not expect to get that album, and honestly, I think I’d feel better if I didn’t. Going in, I knew it was going to be some kind of metal album, but I didn’t think it was going to sound like that. I think a good heavy metal band makes good use of dynamics, being able to bring down the energy so that the louder parts stand out. However, this album does not do that, and simply chug-chug-chugs along with the exact same sound for the whole album. The drums feel like they’re boring into your skull at some points, and the singing does not sound very good. I don’t know if it’s the filter they put on his voice, but it’s hard to tell who seems more like they are being microwaved to death, him while singing or me listening to this album. I just didn’t feel like there was any change on the album, and the lyrics that could have been good were obscured by the singer’s barking voice. The lyrics that weren’t good were…really bad, having a song where you talk about being filled by the devil’s big red if anyone catches my drift, just makes the album sound like it’s simply going for shock value and not trying to say something meaningful. Overall, not a pleasant experience, really hoping the next one is better.
I managed to get through the album and didn't hate it, it but won't listen again.
When I was in middle school, my older brother had a Ministry CD. I don’t think It was this one, but even during the height of my interest in industrial metal (8th and 9th grade exclusively), I never really listened to it. Maybe I did once but I probably had the same reaction as I did this time: Maybe 30 seconds in - ok this is kinda cool Everything after that - ok that’s enough Ministry for me. It’s monotonous.
2.25 - Mostly not for me, but I kind of dig the machine gun percussions and electronic sound in some of the songs.
I like the music but I do wish the lyrics were not that type of screaming lyrics
This was the last Ministry album I really spent time with back in the day. I loved The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste, but Angst by KMFDM and then Nine Inch Nails arrived not long after, and gradually wore me out on the whole industrial thing. Psalm 69 is still a pretty solid record, and Rammstein clearly owes it a debt. That said, the style feels less coherent and convincing than NIN to me, borrowing from all over the place without quite defining itself. In 2026, it doesn’t hit nearly as hard. I immediately followed it with Demanufacture by Fear Factory, and that sounded like pure honey in comparison.
Speed metal :(
Some cool sounds and not totally unlistenable (looking at you, Slipknot), but not for me.
I found it to be very repetitive so it kind of got boring after a while. There was not a lot of complexity lyrically or musically.
Ok
5/10 No es un género que me guste mucho la verdad, ya en un punto se me hizo molesto pero no es malo. Esta bien logrado para su género
Tedious
I can appreciate it in moments with the right mindset, surely. But do I ever want to listen to this again?
i was ready to like this one out of spite of several reviews (especially that annoying christian in the top) but it really did end up boring </3 like not terrible, i can see situations where it would fit as background music, but man i could just be tired but this was a slog. the 'repetitive' complaints are correct
It's fine - it's a weird in between metal and industrial that I never really realized until relistening to this the other day. I don't know why but it just doesn't land for me. Jesus Built My Hotrod is pretty damn catchy...
I can’t make heads or tails of this. I should like this but I couldn’t tell what any of the lyrics were and the repetitive sound samples from movies or tv shows were annoying af.
90s metal, sorry to lump you in with 90s rock, but that’s where you’re going. Worst decade for rock music. This just feels juvenile — like a “I’m 14 and this is deep” type of deal. Maybe this felt edgier when it came out, but now it just falls flat. Sometimes it had some good heavy thrash riffs, like in “Scare Crow,” but other times it was quite bad, like “Jesus Built My Hotrod,” which sounds surprisingly similar to the South Park theme. Teetering on a one star, but the riffs push it up to a two. Although now that I’m remembering the lyrics and the stupid album title, it might be back to a one-star again.
Short enough that I didn't find it completely irritating, but I've never been able to get into this kind of industrial metal sound.
Not into this.
This was an interesting listen of a group I have heard of but never seemed to listen to. Some solid songs on here but also a lot of gimmicks going on.
This album is a combination of industrial rock and metal but is lacking in both aspects. The industrial rock sounds like mediocre Nine Inch Nails, and the metal sections sound like Metallica but with worse (and European sounding?) vocals.
I was excited for a heavier album, but this didn’t really scratch that itch for me. It started off strong, but by the time it ended I found it rather dull. I liked the industrial aspects, but I believe the album lacks the depth needed to fully pull that style off. The tracks also sound a bit too similar to one another. The standout aspect for me was the drumming, which was excellent. The rest was just kind of there. I liked "Just One Fix" and the experimental nature of the closing track, "Grace".
I think one song was like “this is good”. But yeah, not my cup of tea.
I do love a good rock album. This is a rock album, but it’s no good.
Was expecting to hate this and although it wasn’t quite as bad as I feared, still isn’t my bag. There were some moments of more interest, like some of the religious imagary used. Some of the synths in the background or more interesting drumming patterns echoed a little of nine inch nails, but nowhere near as strong. The guitar was too muddy and chugged, and the vocals were pretty poor. Rather forgettable in the end.
Nothing about Ministry should appeal to me but this wasn’t that bad. They have a song called “Stigmata” that I always thought was a bit of silly fun. They are better than the stupid metal band I reviewed yesterday and they are better than Nine Inch Nails. You don’t get nominated for Grammys and have your album go platinum if you don’t have some degree of pop sensibility, even if it has to wade through the giant wall of garbage that is this genre to shine through. So, some positives here, which was a nice surprise. Still and all, this was pretty terrible.
I never got into Industrial (Hardcore with more theatrics!), but I know that people who dig it do admire this album. 🤷
Tried but just couldn’t get into it
Nah, dawg.
I don't get it. Truly not my vibe at all.
Why listen to White Zombie when this exists? Also, why listen to this?
Semmonen death metal räminä
2.5 Enjoy stuff like this far more when the vocalists aren't trying to sound 'scary'
I can see the appeal…
Really not my bag and nothing here changed that. Some occasional flashes of melody shone through and i can see where it fits in the venn diagram between classic metal, 80's industrial and looking forward.
It's an old trope, but I think I lost 20 IQ points listening to this. I usually like heavy music, but this is boring and torturous. Stupid themes that have been done a million times much more thoughtfully, you know, war, religion, etc.
Nope
Ministry is an industrial metal band from Chicago, and this is their fifth album. As with other heavy metal bands, sometimes the lyrics are difficult to hear. The last track on the record, “Grace”, is random spoken clips over background noise, and adds nothing in my opinion. The remainder of the album is ok with a few good tracks, and overall I give it 2.5 stars.
Haha oh boy. I (apparently) hate metal, but I like industrial, so where will this fall? Astute readers may have a guess. I didn't like it very much. Needs less growliness, and honestly, less drums. Not for me. Slur count = 1? (kinda hard to tell, I might have missed some). A little bit lol edgy, which isn't helping matters.
Not much of a fan of this album it felt all over the place and I didn’t ever get into it not terrible but just not for me
bateria irada e jesus built my hotrod bem interessante, mas o resto é bem barulho.
Por qué Rust In Peace es un 5/5 y este un 2/5? Pues por afinidad nomás. No lo terminé de escuchar, convencida de mi 2/5.
The combination of industrial metal and the title had me excited but it just ended up being a very repetitive listen. The parts of "Psalm 69" where they had the choir is kinda what I was hoping this album was going to be. Blending industrial metal with stereotypical religious music is an interesting idea and I think they achieved it here. They clearly liked it so much they just started the song again half way through. Wasted Potential 2
i fuck with this ngl. learned a lot about industrial music/rock
While this is not my usual thing, I did enjoy it for driving today, especially "Jesus Built My Hotrod" and "Scare Crow."
picks: jesus build my hotrod, just one fix
Good in small doses
This kind of metal isn’t for me.
One had to be in the mood for this, I suppose.
2.1/5
If they are 100% serious about this, it’s a one. If they’re taking the piss, then it’s a two.
Too hard, too screechy, too repetitive for my tastes.
There’s a lot of other rock/metal albums I’d probably reach for before this one. It wasn’t hard to listen to, but I didn’t really fall in love with it either.
Not my jam but had a couple of decent tracks
Speed/thrash metal is to hard and shorty for me most of the time but Jesus Built My Hotrod was an indie sensation back in the day. 2.5⭐️
This album just wasn't for me. Some of the riffs were cool I guess and I understand why someone would like this as a metal album, but I found it too repetitive and not exciting enough.
Fav- psalm 69 2/5
It started well but then slid into a Beavis & Butthead tribute band. Shame because the first track was good.
Never quite grooved for long enough, not interesting enough instrumentally. Scare crow could have been a good track but just didn't quite get there.
Erm. OK.
Sind paar schöne Riffs drauf und schön mal herauszufinden, woher das Bring Me The Horizon Sample in "Anthem" kommt. Bis ich dann herausgefunden habe, dass beide es aus einem Film gesamplet haben. Ich find aber leider sehr viel hier auch sehr nervig, insbesondere den "Gesang".
I can appreciate the influence this had on industrial music, but I wasn't into it.
I don’t usually listen to industrial, but when I do, you can rest assured it’s because of my commitment to this project. Honestly, this is not my jam. But I will say I almost liked “Jesus built my hot rod.“
Nope
WEIRD AF
This is #day547 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… this stretch from Slade to Kraftwerk through Tribe to Ministry is wild. But that's part of the fun, I guess. Anyway, this isn't the industrial I'm after when I'm in the mood for industrial. Add the speed metal edge, and it's just not a combination for me. I'd much rather revisit some Marilyn Manson or Rammstein. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day548.
I liked some of the songs, but it’s not really of my liking this type of music, I enjoyed some of the heavy riffs of the guitars and some rithms of the drums.
A few distressing moments but on the whole very enjoyable
The songs that lean heavily on one side (Thrash or Industrial) are good, and the duo of outro songs are great, but the rest is too long and doesn't do enough to keep me interested.
Metal. Megadeath ish
kinda meh
This isn’t my genre, but I think this album is probably a good representation of the genre, meaning fans of this genre probably think this is a great album. While I personally don’t enjoy the sound or lyrical content much, I recognize that this is a solid creative endeavor.
Like a lot of noise. Cool, not my thing
Pretty far outside my tastes, but kind of fun as a one time listen.
Frenetic. But quite enjoyable. Close to a 3.
Well done version of a thing I’m not into
Some cool theatrical sections and some decent riffs but ulitmately its boring which is an unfortunate side effect of being a first to the industrial metal scene
Im not a big fan of the genre but still can appreciate its well produced.
Too tinny for me. There was not enough middle and base tone to help me to feel the power of the music.
Certainly interesting, if nothing else...
Had a few good tracks, but most of this was not my style. I can appreciate the importance of Ministry and this album with regards to industrial metal, it’s just not something I would enjoy listening to a second time.
I liked a couple of tracks - Jesus Built My Hot Rod and Psalm 69 - but as a whole album, it got a bit repetitive.
Idk man I kinda hated this, and I like some metal. Meh
I think you can see why it would be considered fun but this is one heavy mess,
Nah. Not a fan.
Not in the mood for this kind of music today
Kinda good but generally a bit too much for me.
As always, Ministry is too industrial for me
This album is... a lot. Not horrible? But not great for sure. Maybe a 2.5? Round down?
Not interested in angry noise. I’m sure people love it, just not me.
Noisy 2.25
IDK, kind of nice but it is like Rammstein but with NU metal spice which is an automatic turn off
Just ok, not my favorite style of metal but respectable
Intellectually, musically, and lyrically empty. I’m sorry your mom didn’t love you as much after your stepdad arrived, but if you find this interesting, music just isn’t for you.
Al Jourgensen and crew crank out an industrial-metal clankfest that plays more like White Zombie in a bad mood than any sort of NIN-ian revelation. “Jesus Built My Hotrod” has its charms—if by charm you mean Gibby Haynes yelping over a speed-freak demolition derby. “Scare Crow” drags its rusted carcass for eight minutes, and while its goth-doom trudge might’ve creeped out a Hot Topic in ‘97, it mostly feels like performance art for people who think barbed wire is a lifestyle. Loud, long, and lunkheaded.
not unlistenable but also not enjoyable… 2.5
2.5
Was expecting to hate this, not as bad as I thought. The mockery went over my head. 2*
This was a morning wake up call. Made me nauseous.
It’s competent industrial metal from the era, I suppose, though it pales in comparison to what NIN was doing at the time. There are some—too many—juvenile elements/lyrics here. I like my metal/industrial/noise to have some, well, musicality; that’s sorely lacking here.
KE*A*H** (Psalm 69) Surprisingly I didn’t truly dislike this, even if it's not really my sort of thing, and whatever charm it does have struggles to outlast 2 or 3 tracks, the rest just kind of drifting by unnoticed. The religious mockery of the songs and the album title seem patronisingly quaint 32 years later, so I don’t think it’s the thematic and lyrical content that made me not mind it, I think it's more that there is a house-like groove and feel to NOW, with the ‘siren’ sound feeling slightly Chemical Brothers-esque and Jesus Built My Hot Rod is a fun, catchy thrash with some knowing silliness. But that’s really about it, apart from perhaps Scarecrow, which creates a feeling of a foreboding atmosphere more successfully than the more thrashy tracks. Obviously not going to listen again, but it isn’t the worst of the worst. ⛪⛪ Playlist submission: NOW
I did not research this album ahead of listening. Imagine my disappointment when the double-kicks came in almost immediately - a sure fire sign that there's going to be some naff solos and grunted singing about pestilence. 'N.W.O' has woeful lyrics ("a truer love has never yet to be found; I see sunset through the eyes of a clown"), and yet somehow isn't so terrible - it has the beat, hard-rock hook, and siren sounds of The Prodigy. I could easily see myself punching a teenager in the face to this in the mosh which is to its credit. It's actually pretty good. When they lose focus on the industrial rock innovations though they fall back into unforgettable thrash metal in the style of Megadeth and co, such as 'Hero' which even has the obligatory shredding solo - it feels dated and hackneyed compared to the other propulsive tunes. An influence on Rage Against the Machine no doubt, this holds its place on the list.
Absolutely not my thing at all but not unlistenable. Enjoyed hearing something a bit different even if I wouldn't go back to it.
Dark, industrial metal (though I get the distinct feeling it's got its tongue firmly in its cheek). It's heavy in all the right ways but I always feel industrial music is lacking any real soul - I guess that's probably the point, but if something is so cold and emotionless constantly, how are we meant to connect with it? Best Tracks: N.W.O.; Just One Fix; Jesus Built My Hotrod
Some cool sounding riffs. Industrial has never been my cup of tea, this didn't change that. I found it exhausting.
Meh nothing memorable. Too hard and noisy
Another example of standout album from a genre i dislike
I remembered this name right off - got your growling burp vocals over crashing drums and two cacophanous guitar chords played loud and fast with a tone that never changes. White kids never had this much reason to be pissed off. This is junk.
It was a pleasant surprise to have something off centre. Though not a good example of the genre. Would have been cool if it was Babymetal.
eh
I've seen this album before on my occasional perusals of this site, so I know I'm in for a rock affair. It's funny that this album's real name completely mogs streaming services and their lack of support for the Greek alphabet. I'm pretty sure this album is anti-religious, which is gay and Reddit-coded, though I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Metal. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever get another genre prediction correct again. Anyways, this album really isn't really my thing at all. The rough, abrasive sound completely misses the mark with me, and I'm not a fan of that weak, unusual vocal style. That being said, there is a respectable level of variety on this album, and I can appreciate the menacing atmosphere. "N.W.O." is cool. That one lead guitar riff goes a long way in carrying the song, though the heavy percussion is also quite good. "Jesus Built My Hotrod" is a little earwormy. The instrumental is very conventional for a metal song, though it's pretty alright for what it is. Book time. Sold well thanks to a successful single, though that's about it. Wikipedia reveals that this album plays around with a few unorthodox genres and was a commercial/critical success. I'm favourable to this pick for how out-there and unusual it is, so I think I can let this one slip by. I cosign this inclusion.
Eh, starts out good but gets increasingly distorted
I’m so bored.
Not my cup of tea, this one just droned along in the background. Nothing outstanding that would've perked my ears.
The first type of black metal album according to Jack. It's interesting it's on this list, and while it wasn't the worst thing I've heard, the beat was the same throughout each song, and it drained me
2/5 - it's not a bad album but I was dealing with stomach pains from eating too much tikka masala when I listened to it and this music just made my stomach feel even more upset. Not good to listen to if you're trying not to throw up. Makes you feel anxious and like you gotta head bang and throw up at the same time. Terrible for me as that's what I'm trying to avoid doing right now.
It actually could be worse. 2 stars
A lot of noise. Sounds at times like Nine Inch Nails, but then again like some industrial machines at an attempt to make music. Lots of distortion...
The album I had to listen to before this was by Parliament, now Ministry, what next? House of Lords? Foreign Office? Treasury? Album is good if you like industrial thrash. I, however, don't.
This was tough. Some cool stuff mixed with some terrible things. I feel uncomfortable listening to it, like I might I might get struck down by a lightning bolt thrown by God at any moment. I hear a little bit of influence from several metal bands. At the end of the day I gotta be in the mood for metal, and today was not the day.
Sounds like a migraine
#127/1001. I used to own this one as well, but it has gotten lost, stolen, or sold. Haven't really missed it, too metal for me even back then. Now Lard was fun! And Jesus built my hot rod as well. Otherwise it is just the same guitar sound, electronic drums and sound effects, processed et voice. I guess the band / Jourgensen has its place on the musical map, but I am reading a different map.
So, totally not my taste in music. Big disclaimer. I did listen with an open mind though. Unfortunately, it didn't convert me to speed metal, or whatever this is called. I just don't fully understand the appeal. The positives? I feel like there might have been a good deal of irreverent humour in here. My favourite songs were "Jesus Built My Hotrod" and "Scare Crow". But, I suppose the main reasons being that both of these songs were the furthest from speed metal on the album. "Scare Crow" sounded a bit like a Smashing Pumpkins song (without the atmosphere), and "... Hotrod" sounded like a piss-take of a hillbilly/rockabilly ditty. Anyways, not for me, but I gave it a go.
This was a bit much for me, even for someone who professes to like metal. I tend to like metal albums where there is an undercurrent of a tangible melody, occasional lighter touches (usually when they actually attempt some singing, however questionable it may be) and doesn’t take itself 100% seriously. Hit 2 out of 3 with some really solid drums and guitar and we’re laughing. I just didn’t get it from this, which I think is the genre and maybe the particular band. It just felt like an assault and un enjoyable in the main. I’m clearly just too basic.
No me guardé nada.
I don't really like being shouted at. The actual music tended to be fine but as soon as they started "singing" I was just waiting for it to stop. Not my thing. Favourite song: Jesus Built My Hotrod Least: Grace
This is some edge lord shit that I’m not cool enough to get. It’s artsy, controversial, weird, nonsensical, and noisy. If that’s your thing, you’ll love this one.
2,5
Low 2. Shrug. Doesn't resonate with me
I hear a lot of NIN, White Zombie, and hardcore punk sounds in this, or more appropriately I hear this in them. Not really my speed, but the opening to Jesus Built My Hotrod always makes me laugh.
Blistering album
this made me so nervous while studying I had to stop
Listened in the truck via YouTube music. First two tracks are bangers. The rest seem to imitate the first two.
It's frantic and in your face. A little cheesy too, maybe. I found things repetitive in the latter half, but I can certainly see and hear the appeal. You wouldn't think that rockabilly fits in with industrial/thrash metal, but it seemingly can. Still not really my taste, however. Anything under industrial rock/metal (except maybe Nine Inch Nails) is hard to get into for me.
🚮
What a horrible way to start a morning :)
Cannot finish this , is too heavy for me
I'm not a fan of industrial music in general and this is no exception
I rarely appreciate industrial music and the way this album is repetitive makes it very hard for me to enjoy it.
★★½
There's a lot going on here. I made it halfway through and needed a break and a glass of water. Ministry freaked me out as a kid and they still freak me out a little now. That said, there’s interesting stuff here. Is it essential? Meh.
Geweldig. FAVO: Just One Fix, Jesus Built my hotrod
It's metal; I'm not sure what I really expected. This doesn't have a lot of screaming so that's s a plus.
There is something trying to sneak out of this album that might be good but is very hidden and struggles to shine through which is the only thing stopping me making this a 1 star.
My original review still stands: "Each song starts strong, but the loop of the same riff gets boring. No real progression. Got fed up pretty quickly." Only positive I can think of, is that it makes me want to play Mortal Kombat or Killer Instinct for some reason.
Heavy metal is not for me. Jesus Built My Hotrod is kind of a bop though.
It all sounds like the same bad song.
I can appreciate it, but not for me.
Not my thing
A bit cacaphonous.
Damn, ok let's see! 1. Hardcore intro. Good. Powerful, like! 2. Nice riffs! Me está sonando a Rob Zombie full. Cool song. 3. Esa no. 4. Neh... 5. U-uh... 6. Cool one, long, but good. 7. Macabra, diabólica I think, satanic. Not really when seeing the lyrics. Edgy. PRAAAISE JESUS. Good, not liked. 8. Ruido. No. 9. Noise. De 9 me gustaron 3. So, 2.7. Le pondré el 2 porque ok.
Seems like "industrial metal" is real heavy metal mixed with extra noise and shouting that pushes the boundary of what music is. Maybe I will enjoy the heavy metal on this list because the better parts of this album are fine... But the 'industrial' stuff don't make any sense to me. Didn't bother to finish the album. - Disturbing... Repetitive... - "TV II" isn't a song. It's noise and shouting
Not for me
I tend to like metal but this is way too much
I hate this. I respect it, but I hate it. I’m not young enough or angry enough to start getting into metal.
Imagine having a first listen of this at 7:30am on a beautiful day. Its not ideal. I'm not particularly in the mood for this, but i always give them a chance Its fine, I wouldn't say it was good because I try not to lie. 2 listens and I'll never listen again. 2 Could you imagine listening to this for pleasure. Jesus christ
Was kind of looking forward to diving into a Ministry album as I have never really given them a shot. This sucks and is very boring. This is the kind of metal a 12-year old thinks is cool.
a few cool riffs but super repetitive
On one hand, I appreciate the inclusion for the sake of the genre, but on the other, was this the best industrial metal album we could find? I liked the production and that it was mercifully not that long. However, I didn’t find this to be particularly entertaining or stimulating. I liked the production and that it was mercifully not that long. If someone does, good for them, but I won’t be going to their BBQs nor their rituals. 2/5
Ugh. Metal two days in a row. I can't
Too noisy for me. Some cool riffs, but that's it.
No music so wasn't sure about the conversation - if od listened I'm sure I would have got it :)) thx!
Ngl I expected something heavier. Every now and then you’d get a chugging riff reminiscent of early Metallica before it would immediately cut back to some bs (2.5/5)
Not my thing but I can see it being huge at the time
Another case where the music isn't too bad (if not exactly my thing) but the vocals completely ruin it for me.
Each song starts strong, but the loop of the same riff gets boring. No real progression. Got fed up pretty quickly.
N.W.O. Just One Fix
ehhhh pretty weird album, never really got into the groove. Didn't hear much musicality in the noise
I didn't enjoy it at all.
Heavy
Wish I liked this more. I can definitely hear the influence it had on others, and I think it generally deserves its place on this list. Not sure this would ever get more than a 3 from me, but it’s really just not doing it for me today.
yeah this one really is not my thing. i'm already not a big metal guy and i am finding i'm specifically not really an industrial guy. there are parts of this album that salvage it a bit from being an album i really don't like, but most of what goes wrong here for me is the production. sometimes the vocals here have weird effects on them that sound more akin to being on a novelty record. sometimes the vocals are really... wet... sounding. sometimes it's just really distorted screaming. either way, not really something i'm into. sometimes the production is really clean. sometimes it's really crunchy. i just can't say i'm really into either direction this album seems to go in, and i didn't have a fun time. when it's at its most basic bitch metal, i don't mind it, but most of the time it very much is not that.
Rating: 2/5 | Favorite Track: Just One Fix --- I tend to find a lot of metal music boring and only like a handful of industrial tracks. Combining the two results in an album I just don't care for. I also just generally dislike music wrapped in a shock/Edgy™ aesthetic.
Somehow I just don't get industrial metal. I love industrial noises/rock/gaze etc. Just not industrial metal...or just metal in general. I think they just took what other genres does, copy them, make them 100 times more complicated (in a bad way) and then turn to laugh at you showing off their super badass guitar and "original tape" with a smile "bit you can't do that" (real life experience). Yeah I probably can't but where's your originality? Metal is just an industrial product, no wonder all the "charging...into xxx(style)" on YouTube are all METAL. I know there are people that like it but I'm quite afraid of them because here comes the Vikings. And what's wrong with all metal band wanting to create a new cult... Oftenly metal is just a term I use to depic a state of lack of aesthecs or message to delivere. I do listen to avant garde and prog metal and they're nice. This is quite boring, not that I hate it but love it? I will never. A 2.5/5.
Didn't like it much. Just Jesus built my hotrod
Naja
This wasn’t good but it was refreshing to listen to after a really bad stretch of albums. I’m only giving it 2 stars because, again, it’s not very good, but in the moment it was a 5.
Couple fun songs but mostly not my jam.
This was way harsher for my taste, as although I appreciate a nice Metal jam, I like the melodic ones better than just the complete mash of everything in one place. I would say that the album was decent at times, but overall very meh.
bem mais trash metal do que eu esperava de resto, é besta demais. metal noventista nao me desce nao pqp
The Good: well, I guess that we’ve got a puzzle. The Bad: I am too tired to try and solve it. The Ugly: my brain, being sneaky, still trying to solve the riddle of the title… Industrial Metal! Yesterday I had Thrash Metal… What kind of Metal will I get tomorrow? More importantly, why are there so many Metal subgenres? I have to say that I appreciate this more than Thrash… I don’t know why. But I’d rather listen to NIN instead… So, this album will not get additional play time for me, and I will keep my fingers crossed and hope that tomorrow brings me something I can stick my teeth in! 2*
A well crafted album of metal from its era. Younger me enjoyed this a lot more than older me.
I usually like metal, but this just didn't do it for me. I'm not sure what it was, but this ain't it.
Jesus built you a hot rod and this is all you've done with it?
Naw. There are moments where this album is kinda groovy and I can almost imagine enjoying it, but it's ruined every time by this dude's awful voice. The thrashy parts are pretty boring and repetitive. I did kinda like "Scare Crow" and "Corrosion". 4/10
2 - I kinda wanted to like this, but man just like...nah
blah
Mostly diabolical, abrasive and fairly puerile. There's a hint of some decent rock in here though, that's just about enough to stop it being a one star horror show.
It’s like if you sucked all the Camp out of White Zombie. And someone in the studio said “instead of repeating the same bit for 4 bars how about 12?” for every song.
In a nutshell: songs for the apocalypse. I was hoping for this album to grab me by the tits. Instead, I was bored. The samples/audio grabs (especially in Psalm 69) were overused. But there were moments of impressive drumming and shredding. This isn’t my genre. But it’s in the book because it was a hit. Overall: 3/10
逆天
Can I still get to heaven, Daddy Peter? I only listened to the album once and I swear I didn't enjoy it very much.
Wild and crazy industrial metal....while pioneers, not for me.
Nice riffs but most of the songs I wasn’t really a fan of.
Just hard to sit back and listen to metal for me if it’s not live.
Heavy synth pop, heavy on the heavy. Muse-y, Smashing Pumpkins-y – and a whole lotta feedback at the end
It was okay, but I don't think it belonged on this list.
Quite a new genre to me so cool to listen to, but not a huge fan.
:/
2 Stars (5/15)
Gritones, no sé cómo no os quedais roncos.
Well that's a lot of noise. Not much more I can say about it.
just, nah. i'm fine with metal, but this wasn't really in my wheelhouse. didn't really enjoy it, but its not awful. definitely wouldn't put on again.
My thought process while listening to this album: Yep, I still don't like industrial metal. . . Maybe I can tolerate it for a song or two, but 45 minutes is way too much. . . You know what, I kinda like some of these songs. . . Hell yeah, turn the music up and let's fucking go! . . Ok, I'm starting to cool down on a few of these songs. Let's see if it picks back up. . . Yeah, 45 minutes is too long to listen to metal. Maybe I can tolerate another song or two. . . Yep, I still don't like industrial metal. High 2, low 3.
riffs are decent but otherwise awful
Cor, wadda racket... I don't hate it! It's got some nice industrial grooves and a healthy dose of not-taking-itself-too-seriously. Rammstein and The Prodigy sound like they both took cues from this. I don't feel like I *needed* to hear it before I die, though. Plus the vocals and more overtly metal bits don't do it for me. 2.5
This is hurting my head but does have some cool stuff in it. Hero was weird towards the end when it sounds like it's skipping. Jesus Built My Hotrod slaps so damn hard. The rest was pretty meh. Kinda repetitive in not the best way.
This definitely wins the award(so far) for the most bizarre title for an album. The album tries too hard to be edgy, but it fails. It does have a handful of headbanger moments. Favorite Song: "Psalm 69".
Very edgy, so-so music.
I had previously heard of Ministry but was not familiar with any of the music. After listening to this, I am not a fan. The sounds are fairly repetitive and not particularly interesting. There's some harshness that I don't love as well. I would not seek this one out again.
An extra star because it was more listenable than I expected. But still an absolutely not for me.
1.5 stars. That was terrible. I like a lot of metal, especially on this 1001 albums list but really struggled with this.
Psalm 69, the commonly used name for an album title comprised of unpronounceable symbols, is the fifth album from industrial metal band Ministry. This is their most successful album, both critically and commercially. The band combines driven metal guitars, with samples and other looped effects to create their aggressive, driven sound. The lyrics - screamed and distorted - adds to the angry tone of all of these songs. The songs do provide some some context; "Just One Fix" could explain some of the rage. Screaming "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" in the track "TV II" isn't as clear of a message, but does show the general hostility this band seems to direct at the world. When they can lay off the seething rage - like in "Jesus Built My Hotrod" - their songs approach tolerable, but the rage-filled stuff dominates the album.
Well that wasn’t very pleasant. I do like some of the guitar riffs here, but I don’t really like music that tries this hard to be dark and intense. Best song: Hero
Very aggressively not my thing. It's somewhat cool in places, a few unexpected twists and turns and I appreciate the drumming. I'm never going to willingly listen to it again but it's good to have options for if I ever need to make someone wake up screaming in abject terror.
Too abrasive and busy for me.
Let's leave this where it belongs: at the industrial estate.
Too heavy for my taste.
OK, Badger music
Napalm Death at least has some decency and their songs are short and simple. Here we have 5 minutes of banging on every track. It's too long. Too boring.
One and a half thumbs down.
This got really rough to listen to later on.
Starten lovede godt med mere punked / simple riffs som der var gang i og ikke så meget metal flex og rod. Men som albummet skred frem blev det mere og mere thrashet, og nærmest umuligt for mig at høre på. Måske er det bare for rodet og for tungt til mig
Not my thing really, but it sounded okay
Sounds quite timeless, like it could have been released today. Album cover is giving rap, but the music is definitely shouty metal.
The riffs were heavy, but the substance wasn't there. Too repetitive, got annoying quick. Wasn't expecting heavy metal with a title like Pslams 69, but then I realized, oh yeah, 69
Oh god, not another one. I've had three heavy metal albums in like 5 days... This is just not my thing... I found this album in particular it be the worst of all of them.
sorry. repetitive crap. one song is fine, but a whole album is just tedious AF.
Hyvin industrial. Tai no, maailmanloppu? En tykkää kirkunasta lopussa. Ei huonoin kakkonen kuitenkaan!
Nicht meine Art musik
I expected worse
This one bored me musically. Some of the best riffs are simple and I don’t mind a repetitive stoner rock riff but the guitar riffs on this were hitting none of those marks.
It's a 2 from me but it's a strong 2. Like a 2.4.
I wasn't familiar with their music, but I was pretty sure I wouldn't like it, and I was right. I'm too far removed from my edgy teen years to appreciate this at all. It's Industrial metal, a genre I do not enjoy. It's angry and screamy and repetitive. I did like the track Hero minus the vocals - the only thing keeping this from being a 1/5.
We get it, you have a scary voice, you play fast, you hate god.
Oof. Not my thing. Stop banging that spanner.
Not for me. Was grinding at work so the high energy was tolerable in some spots.
Made it through the whole thing
not for me
A bit much for me
2.5
For the first time in a long time, I’m on a 2. The last time I gave a 2 to a non-live album was to Calenture - The Triffids, and that was *3 months ago.* Unlike Calenture, this is just straight up at a 2; it doesn’t even hit the “2.5 that I can’t round up” mark. There’s only 2 or 3 really good tracks at most, and yes, one of them is indeed the batshit insane yet wildly entertaining nonsense that is Jesus Built My Hotrod. The other one, for me, was Hero, if only because I couldn’t shake that it sounded like a Sonic track. TV II is OK, it just sorta clicked right for me for some reason. The first 5 tracks of the album are ultimately fine – they’ve got decent energy, some fun riffs, some fun percussion, and it does hit a solid high at Track 5. It was at a 3, until Scare Crow started. The final 4 tracks of this album just strike me as utterly directionless, or padding for the sake of it, and there is no more egregious an example of padding than the 8-minute snoozefest that is “Scare Crow” – my god, I’ve never heard anyone pan out *syllables* before. Choosing to end on two instrumental tracks after the remarkably disappointing Psalm 69 is really what dragged this album down from being close enough to a 3 to being firmly at a 2 – what a flat ending to an album that had so much potential from its imagery to its cover to the weirdest title I think we’ve gotten from an album yet. The really disappointing part is that the framework for a good album is here – speed up some tracks, throw in some extra vocals, hell, add a skit or two to play off of this religious theming; do something to add some extra character to your album. It feels like a fucking beta version of a style that other bands would imitate and refine to a greater degree (probably Nine Inch Nails, really, if I had to guess), and while it never dives into egregiously bad, it does dive into egregiously boring a few too many times at the end. It just fell short at the finish line to me, hence the 2.
This is a bit much for me. :)
Correcto
Speed metal, industrial and some interesting mixing of sounds. But lyrically fails entirely for me.
Heavy industrial spund
better than expected
That was not really my taste. The guitar was good when they showed it off but it was few and far between. Felt pretty repetitive to me as well. 5/10 and that’s mostly because of the guitar.
EHHHHHH idk bout this one
I think this is probably very good for what it's trying to be. Love the hardness of the instrumentals, and the production is quintessentially 90s. Made me think of grungy carpet and gory FPS games on Playstation. Not a genre that speaks to me, but I am glad to know of Ministry when I do need to put on something to rage to.
So so not horrible but not that good either
It was interesting, I’ll give it that.
Eh
Ihan hyviä riffejä ja hetkiä mutta ei tämmönen pidemmän päälle enää uppoa
Juuh olihan siinä däng-ä-dängiä
Listened Before? Y My best friend in HS loved this album so I've heard it many times. Its not my favorite and I never became a fan despite his best efforts. I don't mind Jesus Built My Hotrod so that's the song I'm choosing. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Jesus Built My Hotrod
Generally like a good bit of the music. Can't listen to the vocals.
Jesus Built My Hotrod was my favorite track. That’s not saying much.
I like some of the more industrial sounding effects, but it doesn’t do much for me otherwise
I can't really do the less poppy side of Industrial. 1.5/5
Once again this is an album that is clearly not for me. That doesn’t mean it’s objectively bad. I can tell that the musicianship is talented. But I’m not a metal guy so it’s semi-torture for me to have to listen to an entire album in which I actively dislike everything that’s going on. Not because it’s “bad” but simply that I don’t like it. Anyway, I guess 2.5/5?
That was nothing.
well, the album cover is cool, I'll give them that.
получил ли я от этого альбома кроме тум тум на гитаре? честно говоря не очень многое алкоальбом: дешевый виски
Nope
Hmmm well
Not for me. I enjoy some metal music, but this had too much added effects and just weird lyrical stuff. 2/5 Won’t listen again
The positive is they are better than Korn, but that is about it.
Well I will never listen to that again or this band again. Did not like. However still think this was better than Korn. At the very least not every song was filled with braggadocious macho bs and misogyny. Yes some songs had some really bleh lyrics but I could barely understand what the dude was saying bc his voice was buried so far in the mix and there were effects on it half the time which was honestly a plus. Overall industrial metal is apparently not my thing.
not my type of music
N.W.O is an interesting song. Overall not for me 2/5
n.w.o - interesting soundbyte of some man saying sorry? lol. riff feels a little repetitive. songs have a slower tempo. tv II - no. hero - a little more varied with guitar riff?? maybe im hallucinating. also sounds more like thrash metal (aka slayer bcuz all ik about thrash is slayer). ending def made me think my headphones were glitching lmao. psalm 69 - ngl i kinda fuck with this song. but not enough to add it to my liked songs. yeah finished it was meh tbh. idk why i keep listening to metal albums in the hopes that i like them. bcuz i've onky really liked nu metal so far. anyway the riffs in every song felt pretty repetitive and because there weren't a lot of vocals leading the song the repetitiveness stood out for iykim.
Yeah, that should confuse the algorithims for a bit.
really bad album 2 stars
Great riffs, but some of the most repetitive songs I've ever heard. They went on far too long
Fine i guess
