Reviews (page 4 of 7)
This is a very mixed bag. I love two songs. A few good ones. A few mid ones. And two I think suck. Fun listen though
Ok?
I can’t go to a 4 (in relation to the other 4’s already on my list) but, this worked well at the gym for me. It’s not my thing but I liked it in it’s genre.
Wow, in the 90’s metal was bound to find drum machines. This is a foundational industrial album and a sound that may have been lost to history. They often rely upon the inherent musicality of a looped sample, which on tracks like NWO really makes the material feel dated. Elsewhere this record is scary, sometimes melodic, and often thrilling. “Jesus Built My Hotrod” is kind of like listening to every Kid Rock song playing on fast forward at the same time which is way better than Kid Rock’s actual music. It’s a stand out track and it has some humor which is lacking elsewhere on this album thanks to Gibby Haynes’ guest vocals. It’s not a great record, but it is very good and not lacking for significance.
A truly bizarre record. Can see smatterings of Nine Inch Nails, System Of A Down, and The Prodigy in here, all whilst remaining its own thing. I’m not sure I actually enjoyed much of it, but I respect what it was doing and can imagine this was a huge inspiration for a lot of stuff I like.
Would need to be in the mood for this album but it's not that bad and can see the influence they had on the product plus a lot of the nu-metal bands.
This was... interesting. I had never heard of Ministry before today, and the first few seconds of the first track didn't really fill me with hope that I would enjoy the "music" on this album. But I gave it a chance, and by the end of that first track, I was coming around. A lot of the songs had a very Rob Zombie-ish vibe to them, and I really dug the cool rhythmic grooves and surprisingly melodic hooks underneath the heavy metal covers. Still not really my genre, and I probably won't listen again, but easily worth three stars.
Ya know, I didn’t mind this. It’s hard but not obnoxious about it. Surprisingly melodic at times. It’s also a nice antidote to the kids music in bombarded by in my life these days.
Listenable.
I like industrial
was ok, enjoy parts of it and on others I find their combination of metal and industrial is not working. Really liked Corrosion, Jesus built my hotrod seems to get way too many plays for what it actually is in my opinion
Industrial/trash metal - it's OK but I rarely feel like playing this genre and if I am in the mood fort this, others do the job better (Nine Inch Nails, Sepultura etc.). It's fine though, it just doesn't really move me.
My actual listening experience here is probably a 2, but I’m boosting it with a full “better than I expected” star. A buddy of mine introduced me to the term “weird hang” as a noun, meaning “someone who is a bit offputting to spend more than a few minutes with”. As in, “You know Bob? Nice enough guy, but kind of a weird hang.” Anyway I bet the vast majority of big Ministry fans are weird hangs. Got that vibe.
The metal bits were better and more compelling than the industrial bits. TVII and Jesus built my hotrod were standouts.
What the heck? I feel like this was probably the most popular or wide reaching Ministry album, but far from the best. If they have The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste on this, then maybe I can get let it go. I remember the day I bought it on cassette and blared it in my car on the short drive home from the Sam Goody store. But that’s not this album! Focus, Jason! I was less into this album but it definitely has its moments. I would Land of Rape and Honey and TMIATTTT before this album any day.
I don’t know what kind of progression needs to take place for a band to go from making synth pop to this but I think it was a wonderful change. I can imagine a whole arena of people who look exactly like Jourgensen going absolutely ham to this stuff and I think that’s beautiful. Also now I really wanna ding-a-ding-dang my dang-a-long-ling-long. Okay but this entire album is just a meme though right? Psalm 69? “The fathers… have filled you with the devils cock and he’ll cum in the name of the lord”? “Jesus built my car it’s a love affair”? You can’t make this stuff up. Completely honestly though, this album was kind of enjoyable.
Not as scary as I thought this would be based on the album cover and description. I actually quite like it musically - it's fairly cleanly produced and is quite danceable at times. Not a big fan of the vocals, but I suppose it would sound a bit silly if they weren't somewhat growled.
Haven't really listened to this band before - some great tracks - Jesus Built My Hotrod, and Scarecrow.
Sidebar: I felt like a huge dork listening to this at my cushy office job, like I should be catching snakes or welding to this instead or something. “Jesus Built My Hotrod” is a banger, I liked “Scare Crow”, and the rest is alright. I was expecting something more transgressive or challenging, I guess. I feel like “Psalm 69” was going for that but it’s too tedious. It’s still full-throttle industrial metal, but I felt pretty numb throughout my listen. Props to the engineering work though. People who really like this genre should get a kick out of this.
I'm kind of split on this one. There are some really fun guitar rifts on this album. The screaming was a bit over the top but I've heard worse. The biggest downfall on this album is its corniness. I get that conservative Christians back in the 90s had a bit of a culture war against metal so naturally, the genre fought back. But this aspect of the album just doesn't feel like it aged well at all.
Very cool industrial metal. Love the distorted mic and clear guitar riffs. That drummer goes hard af.
2,5
Produced some head-bangin moments....also produced some repetitive, annoying moments. Average.
It was my first time listening to Ministry, and while I thought it had fun energy and a raw industrial edge, I did feel like it dragged in parts. Favourite Songs: Just One Fix, Jesus Built My Hotrod, Scare Crow. Least Favourite Songs: Corrosion, Grace.
I really do see the ideas and the vision here, and in a way even manages to somewhat own the fact that the procution is absolutely god awful, but I think it is overall held back by the lack of focus and direction. But the ideas are still there, and the sheer brutality of some moments really do make it feel like a high quality metal album.
This album reminded me of how much I don't lie Metal (speed metal, psychobilly, or industrial metal, or any of the other shades of metal). That said, I do appreciate the production value and the creative approach to blending media. It is elaborately executed and sounds great, and it is interesting to compare this the emergent grunge bands. I just wish I enjoyed the genre more.
Half is dogshit while the other half is pretty good.
3.5
While more commercially successful than The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste this album is just not as good. There was a time that I enjoyed Ministry and then I grew up. I guess you get enough heroin and speed this could be your jam. Also I would skip watching them live at this point. Al is pretty well fried and can't remember the words to the songs.
Random thoughts: * I owned this album on CD. I bought it after seeing the video debut of N.W.O. on headbangers ball. * Is this album metal, is it industrial? I'm not sure. * I enjoyed the nostalgia of hearing this album, especially the first 2 tracks. But I ran out of steam as the album progressed. Which reminded why I never loved this album back when I got it. * There is some interesting bits especially Jesus Built My Hotrod. * I played this in the car with Julian and he hated it. It sounded like "shit" and the musical parts were too repetitive. Oh well.
Good quality industrial metal album
Man this is heavy. I don’t know how often I could play it through, but good example of foundational industrial metal.
I was worried this would be a punish to get through at first. Once I got into it, I can see all the influence on NIN and other industrial bands that I like. Actually enjoyed a lot of the unique production, but not all the songs. Still overall more good than average
I believe I had only once listened to Ministry. Now I know that I've been missing something. This album made me headbang hard. Tracks like Jesus Built My Hotrod and Hero took me by surprise. Can see how this band influenced industrial metal!
Metal? Kinda? Had my head bobbing as I was at work, but nothing to keep me coming back. I liked Scare Crow a good bit, though.
Things I liked about this album: - the vocal processing - most of the post-recording effects - “Corrosion” is the best song easily for it’s surrealist feeling - the message of “Hero” - “Jesus Built My Hotrod” is goofy - metal albums often sound like they’re adhering to some impossibly high standards of masculinity, this one doesn’t seem to care as much! Things I disliked about this album: - it’s adherence to some basic metal tropes on “Hero” - songs are too long at times, repeating the same loops without really achieving anything (I’m looking at you, “Scare Crow”) - a little too atheist, occasionally cheesy Maybe the most interesting, engaging pre-2000’s metal album I’ve heard so far! Almost a 4/5 stars, I loved that it leaned more towards the crazy experimental sounds towards the end. Appreciate it!
I can see why people like it but....
Nice.
I'm not particularly an industrial guy but like a bit of Ministry sometimes. I lean more towards the slower, sludgier direction they took on Filth Pig and also have plenty of time for the In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up love album which feels like a great live experience. Somehow this record between the two didn't do much for me, aside from the few rather gimmicky tracks I already knew and Scare Crow which was the most likely what they went on to do next.
Didn’t officially hate it, was sorta different
Not really memorable, a couple of good songs
This is some alright industrial. There's really only 3 big highlights and the rest is pretty much just there. Gotta say I can't believe a song like "Jesus Built My Hotrod" got radio play, but I love it, weirdly catchy Also a side note: I saw them open for Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie and I genuinely fell asleep during Ministry
Had all the markings of an album I would hate but I actually liked this a lot.
Can’t tell if it’s good or terrible
Did not seem that impressive.
p695. 1992. 3 stars Well done Stateside industrial metal with a sense of humour. Makes you realise just how influential Motorhead were. Points deducted for excessive wankage on multiple tracks.
Got to be a little too much after a handful of tracks, but the first bit was fun!
Very cool album. I bought this album when it came out and its energy served as a backdrop for some good times in my 20s. It’s still holds up for me as a great album.
Rating: 5.5/10 I like it...barely. It's interesting enough but the gimmick starts to wear extremely thin by the end, some very good songs on here though.
I'm generally not into industrial metal at all, but this had some interesting stuff
That's some heavy shit right there.
Although generally not a huge Ministry fan, I liked this album.
It's exciting to mix things up with a metal album, but sometimes they get a bit dull, don't they?
Unsure how to rate this. There were parts I liked a lot, and some that made me think I was listening to music that would show up a half-decade later. I was driving while listening to most of it and I kept wondering ... is there actually a psalm 69 ... and I'm glad they answered that for me.
I didn't -love- it, but despite the je ne sais quoi it was still fun and enjoyable.
Ding dang a dong bong bing bong Ticky ticky thought of a gun Every time I try to do it all now, baby Am I on the run? Why, why, why, why, why, baby? If it's so evil then? Give me my time, with all my power bat shit crazy brilliance
Interesting sound but, as is often the case with extreme metal, they don't utilize enough of the variety that exist in the sound world they're exploring
‘Just One Fox’ clearly launched a thousand Industrial band ships. Every genre song since has basically tried to sound like this.
Metal adjacent? Oh buddy. I have never really listened to ministry as it seemed like NIN for goths and I like neither of those things. To hear some angry music though? Man. Grab my eyeliner and colour me excited. My parents are very worried about my new friends and have enlisted a social worker to talk about my new feelings. Ministry. Play me through this new development. The fix is in brother, when you’re NWO, you’re NWO 4 Life. Hook that opening to my veins. I listen to metal all the time, but listening to it in the context of this list feels exhilarating. Almost experiencing it anew. The repetition works in the songs favour. The vocals are a little bark-y and remind me of what Korn would later emulate. Take that as you will. Sample rules. This is the exact song I would despise if it came out in 2002, but 1992? This thing is a screamer. Rife with energy and blazing a trail directly through the dense underbrush of the musical realm. Order of arrival matters and this appears to have gotten to this spot before most mainstream metal. Good song. Even with the stolen Slayer riff part way through. Brings to mind early Macabre, which I never thought I’d say in these reviews. I’ve thought plenty of macabre things listening to these albums, but hearing some heavily compressed, metallic tremolo picking? Beautiful. Hmmm. I like the speed, but I have to stop grading this on a curve. This is not a song I would listen to. I’m excited that it’s metal, but this is pretty mid tier thrash with lame coliseum vocals. Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil. That intro was dumb as shit. Not funny, not even weird. Just dumb. Of course this was the hit. Honk honk binga bing bing bong awooga. A monumental failure and a further indictment of the general public’s intelligence level. Uh. Sorry. I meant wah wah dingy ding dong. A brain deadener followed by an absolute slog. Eight minutes with no good ideas. Perfect. How the decent have fallen. This influenced the nu-metal movement so much. Even the way the “69” repeats. I hear Fred Durst. This exact riff is done so much better by a 1000 death metal bands. It’s an excellent riff though. Can’t really get tired of it. Love a good takedown of religion. Fun song. I kind of like the noise element of “Corrosion.” Hits the ear right but doesn’t have enough “oomph” for me. Now this guy has me talking in onomatopoeia. I need to get out of here. Again, more noise. Interesting finish, but I don’t know if we needed this twice. The closer was far better in my opinion, but yeah that was one track stretched into 2. A complete conundrum in some ways and an open book in others. The energy was there and the rage was palpable. This album oozes a slimy, unctuous distaste for society and all of its ills and while the commentary lacks a certain incisiveness, the overall atmosphere cuts to the heart of the issue. A few clangers to be sure, but a few really good tracks and a misanthropic buzz leave me with an itch at least relatively scratched. 3 HIGHLIGHTS: N.W.O., Just One Fix, TV II, Psalm 69
Tracks 1 and 3 were a bit naff but the rest was great. 3.5 stars.
industrial headbanging. Pretty decent stuff.
Just One Fix and Jesus Built my Hot Rod are the standouts. The rest of the album is pretty good. 1001 album worthy: Yes - 42/73
Metal. Dit genre kan alle kanten op. Dit album begint in ieder geval best leuk met zijn breakbeats, maar nummers als "Just One Fix" en "Jesus Built My Hotrod" klinken dan weer met veel energie. Helaas vind ik veel andere nummers erg slecht; Beetje jammer eigenlijk. ***
This was a great heavier album. Nothing like "special" special, but a fun break from the rest of the list
Not into the singing style but it was really well played. Defo something to rock out too 3-3.5 as it is a very certain mood
Pretty sweet mix of stuff here. Kind of speed metal, kind if industrial, kind of hardcore.
point1.
Didn't enjoy as much as I expected too, but I do still enjoy. Will I listen to again: 50%
Favourite songs: N.W.O, scare crow, corrosion. I couldn’t really understand anything the singer was saying but the music sounded quite good on most songs. I’m just not the biggest metal fan which is why I can only rate this a 3
Industrial psychobilly Metal with a smirk. Kind of a cousin of White Zombie.
Started great, became NWOBHM-esque, then picked up a heavier industrial sound. I may not reach for the album again but do want to investigate the band further
I was terrified of the kids who wore Ministry t-shirts in high school.
Nine Inch Nails was my gateway drug and Ministry drove in the spikes.
Typically not my style of music, and, although it felt a bit repetitive, I had a shit day and it was a well timed album for a good workout.
Music to make serial killer films in the 1990s to. Some of this is pretty cool, and was obviously quite innovative in its time. The thing with industrial music is that for me there is a thin line between atmospheric, rhythmic sense of dread and then just repetitive intentionally abrasive droning static. Just One Fix, Scare Crow falls into the first category and Hero the second.
Sounds like thrash metal out of the gate, but does a quick pivot and pulls in decidedly industrial tones. Wikipedia confirms "industrial metal" as the genre du jour. Kind of makes me think of a less commercially-viable Rob Zombie. Opener N.W.O. is built around a tight little bass thrum and repetitive distorted guitar riff. Some unintelligible vocals are layered in and out along with vocal samples and other electronic elements. The effect is something that would be fine to keep you going on a long drive, but otherwise it doesn't really go anywhere. Just One Fix doubles down on the same Rob Zombie style guitar riff + industrial thump. Honestly its a fine song, but like much of this genre it kind of grows tiresome without anything else as a backdrop. Like I feel like in order to fully enjoy this style of music you need some vampires battling each other, or a gas pedal under your right foot. TV II is as interesting as this has gotten so far -- oscillating between melodic segments and spoken word through a condenser mic. I do think they missed an opportunity to spend time dug into that riff or taking a quick left turn and blowing off steam through the last 30 seconds. Instead it kind of fell a bit flat. I do actually like Psalm 69 a lot. Song is a weird jam. I was very up and down on this one. At its core, I believe this is solid driving music (similar to Rob Zombie, etc.) but I rarely found the songs themselves to be "interesting." Basically the melodies and riffs are easy to get behind, but the songs themselves don't do much internally to progress. Ultimately I'm left feeling a little underwhelmed -- somewhere in the low 3 range.
Had low expectations on this one at the beginning, but it settled into a perfectly fine album. Overall this would have been better suited for a run or playing something like DOOM, not general housework.
This album grew on me once it got to the middle. The drums and guitar were both pretty incredible at times. I thought this was going to be an unlistenable industrial rock album but I actually really liked it. The beginning and end couple of songs were certainly very harsh but still overall a pretty good album. Instrumentals: Solid 4 Vocals: 1-2
Many years ago, I once asked my record dealer for alternatives to Rammstein. He recommended Ministry, among others. Somehow I didn't get on with it at the time. Today I listened to the album and expected it to be a direct deterrent. But I found the music interesting. Now I understood better what the dealer meant at the time. In the meantime, I have also moved away from Rammstein. But I will listen to the album again. After an exhausting evening at the drinking table, it's too exhausting for me today. 3/5
3.33
Quite a weird metal album. Doesn't have the usual metal grunts really but singer has a really distorted singing voice. Songs often don't follow a set structure of verse and chorus and whatnot. I enjoyed parts but a lot of it doesn't do anything for me.
A band that I've never given enough time or space to, should listen more. I'll give this a star for now. Love the energy
3.5/5
3 - very hard rock
wooaaahhKAY
not bad. 2.75/5
Heavy Industrial metal. Standouts: N.W.O, Just One Fix
I assumed I wouldn't like this at all, but Ministry sure had something going in the late 80's/early 90's. Scare Crow was my favorite track.
Decent I guess
SCARY
Okay I guess but not interesting.
Well this was unnerving.
Was pleasantly surprised with what an enjoyable listen this was - excellent in its genre
Good blasphemous fun
I wish this was more industrial. Maybe I've been desensitized by harsher music from the past 30 years, but this was weaker than I was wanting. Still a pleasant listen, albeit a little cheesy at times.
fun but i wouldn't wake up early on sunday for it
Very strong
Great album to paint a crib to.
Fun 90s metal
I forgot that I like this record. It’s a lot cooler than I recalled. 3.5
Fast and shouty. Good guitars, gritty. This is probably a 3.5. Sorry, not quite getting a 4 but it was better than I expected.
NWO is instantly recognizable, but I had forgotten how good Just One Fix and Scare Crow are. Rest of the album is ok, but l liked Ministry more when they were making proper 80s synth-pop. score: 7/10
Better than expected, enjoyed 'Scarecrow'
Ehhhh yea, I mean I see where this is coming from and I see where it's headed, but where it is just isn't all the way there. Some serious highlights, and a lot of stuff that I like here, but also has something about it that just turns me off of it and makes it hard to want to return to. All that to say, pretty good, not great.
Locked in chugging riffs, though kinda plain right out of the gate. Jesus Built My Hotrod is cool.
Jesus Built My Hotrod was one of the first random songs I can remember downloading off of Napster (or Limewire, or Frostwire) back when downloading music was cool. Don't worry, now I pay a company a monthly fee to not pay the artists when I listen to their music. Anyway, I thought I was cool for knowing about Ministry all those years ago, but until now, that was the only song I could reference. I was slightly disappointed listening to this entire album. It is very abrasive but also very droning and repetitive. There seems to be a deep message here but there is also a lack of substance. I felt pretty lukewarm about the album as a whole and was expecting more.
Definitely metal. Not the biggest fan of the industrial scene, but not bad.
For what it was I thought it was good. I think the instrumentation was top notch and the vibe was good and dark. Didn't feel like it was a parody of satan music, it felt sincere. I imagine that this is what goth girls listen to.
This might be blasphemy to some (heh) but I've always considered Ministry to be the shit version of KMFDM. I think I've seen Ministry live about 6 times, never as the headliner and never totally on purpose. They were good every time, don't get me wrong, but they never really were on my rotation as someone I followed. I've never actually listened to this album all the way through until today. The first thing I have to mention about this is that it is repetitive. The songs go on longer than they should; great for a mosh pit, bad for listening. The opener is a perfect example - there's an extra minute of the driving riff for no good reason really. And then it just keeps happening...nearly every song goes on for too long and doesn't provide a lot of variety. You better like that 8 bar phrase, is all I'm saying. "Psalm 69" seems like the most musically interesting track because it has more than one scale of notes in it! Favorites on here were "Just One Fix", "Hero", "Psalm 69", "Corrosion" and the classic "Jesus Built My Hotrod". I guess that's half the album so maybe I like them more than I'm letting on. I obviously enjoy it, this is absolutely my style, but please just use the whole fretboard guys. There are a lot of notes to play. I know you can do it!
3 stars
What
Actually expected to not like this, but it’s pretty good. The drummer is amazing. I can see a lot of these guys in more recent acts.
Such great memories of ‘Jesus Built My Hotrod’! The album in its entirety is a juggernaut of hardcore tunes. An acquired taste.

Was familiar (and enjoyed) Jesus Built my Hotrod. This was a good listen, loved the tightness, reckon they would put on a good live show.
This album was better than I expected. As someone who doesn't like much metal, but has a soft spot for some industrial stuff, I was intrigued and finished the whole thing despite the annoying vocalist and the bland lyrics about hypocrisy of religion (not very sociological sound arguments here, I'd say). I can't rate this higher than three stars because overall it wasn't standing out like other albums on this list, but, yeah. The cover is cool too.
It's got a good dose of early 90s industrial noise, some de rigueur blasphemy, and scary voices. It amuses me now and than, and sometimes it's just tiresome shock value. Definitely not the worst of its ilk.
Metal. This album had the curious habit of alternating pretty consistently between songs I really liked and songs I really didn’t. I liked the more thrash sounding stuff; Hero was a standout.
Parhaat: TV II, Jesus Built My Hodrod, Psalm 69
Apparently iconic, but made me feel like I was having a stroke.
I was ok, it had that very tinny pantera production. Not one I’d revisit
I can't believe 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' invented Nu metal. Fairly well headbangable. Gets a bit repetitive at times. Some songs feel like they could be a bit shorter. 3/5
It is hard core metal. Gets my blood pumping. I think I'd like to see them in concert just to get the experience.
This one is a bit up and down. They really deliver some energetic, hateful, angry, driving beats... though it also gets interspersed with more experimental sections and spoken verse. Just One Fix does the best to hit the mood but there is a lot of attention getting pieces here. An engaging listen for the right mood.
pretty slamming heavy metal. But not as slamming as Metallica or Megadeath
Liked most of this way more than I thought I would. Jesus Built My Hotrod is awesome.
Pretty cool, never really listened before but have heard of ministry for years. A little too much prog stuff for me but cool nonetheless.
This was ok. Not really my style but good.
I listened this while driving to my work at 7 in the morning. Before I left, I made myself a nice cup of coffee in a thermos to enjoy during my ride. However, I forgot it on the kitchen corner. After having listened this album, I didn't even need that coffee. 2.9*
The name is weird as fuck and the songs are pretty repetitive. 3/5
It's not too bad. It's quite murky and a lot of it is just too noisy. But there's some driving rhythms in there and I'm down with some of it. It's not one I'll return to by any stretch.
Huh, that didn't start great, but the middle was pretty solid.
Favorite Tracks: N.W.O. Just One Fix
It tickles me that in the era of the Gregorian Chant music fad, someone's mom may have picked up THIS CD by mistake. Feels a bit ahead of it's time - feels like Rammstein/industrial shred era NIN. I wouldn't add it as a regular to my rotation and I can't really appreciate a whole album of it at a time, but this is far better than a lot of the 1001 list's electronica.
Apparently Ministry is in a similar echelon of \"industrial rock\"/thrash metal with NIN and Rammstein, but I'm way less familiar with their music compared to those other groups. Still, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
Started of well, the sort of industrial heavy metal I can just about listen to, then got repetitve
The album before this one was by Sisters of Mercy. The only reason I say this is I was expecting THAT music to sound more like this, and Ministry's music to sound more like Sisters of Mercy. Very odd. Having said that, most of the songs are... yeah. "Jesus Built My Hotrod," at least, you can TELL that was tongue in cheek. Most of the rest of the album is just VERY VERY intense. But at least there is some sense of humor in there with JBMH. You can tell the band's distaste with the church, which is probably warranted. I liked it, but not something I am going to come back to on a regular basis. Top tracks: "Just One Fix," "Jesus Built My Hotrod," "Psalm 69"
As much as I like Ministry, I’ve just never gotten the love for this album. There are a couple of pretty solid tracks (especially Scarecrow), but there’s a lot of filler. And “Jesus Built My Hotrod” is just annoying. The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste is similar in style and significantly better.
Jesus Built My Hotrod is the best thing about this, but it hardly belongs.
Mmm reall heavy
It is an interesting album...I think I'll never listen to Ministry again since it's too pop for my metal vein and too metal for my pop vein, but it's a very interesting inclusion to the list.
Laid back and mellow industrial metal, oxymoronic but the stuff I'm used to will blow this shit to smithereens. Neverless, so incredibly evil and sadistic sounding, chaotic splices of samples make this album artistic and appealing for more reasons. The pacing of the drums is awesome, but god I wish this was produced without a gated snare. Its wound too tight with a ton of reverb. This most tracks could benefit from a looser and wider sound more indicative of grunge. Just an observation and opinion.
Yep this is a good industrial metal album, should be on the list, I do recognise some of the music from the game command the conquer I played as a teenager. It’s just not my sort of music I choose to listen to so won’t make my frequent rotation.
Despite this definitely not being my type of music, I found it to be really well composed and formulated. I’m not sure if I’ll revisit the album as a whole, but I might come back to one or two songs.
I once was in my industrial era
Industrial metal that utilizes heavy sampling and unique processing in order to differentiate their sound. Ministry utilizes humor similar to Primus so they never take themselves too seriously, but the resulting sound is still memorable. I don't think everything entirely lands for me but the unique sound is still memorable.
NWO Just One Fix Jesus Built My Hotrod
A toe tappin’ sing along! A reminder of gentler days! I hope all the evangelicals get a chance to listen to this…they will be reborn again!
Pretty good thrash metal. Decent listen but does not move me enough to reach for it. Needs more complexity in the musical movements.
I like it more than I thought I would. But it's not that good.
Wanted to listen to ministry for a while given their influence on nine inch nails and their role as the concert Aesop Rock's brother was banned from attending in Blood Sandwich. Sounded like I expected given the NIN link, industrial metal which Trent Reznor strongly ripped off in the early years. Would say it's less varied than NIN though, almost all songs used a variation of the same driving riff. The dark Christian themes would out off a religious household, can see why Aesop's mam didn't approve. I quite liked it but I don't think I'd go back very soon, there wasn't anything that stood out enough.
I'm all for a double bass pedal and some headbanging. I'm not so sold on the rockabilly thing though. Bits of this were ok, but others a bit daft. Not really for me I don't think, but didn't hate it. I see that Jesus built my hot rod is the most played track, but didn't think it was the best. Think I enjoyed hero the most 2.5
Jesus Built My Hot Rod is nice, but the rest didn't stand out.
the definitive industrial music group along with Nine Inch Nails. don't usually listen to this type of music but I can appreciate it's influence and handle it in doses. the highlight is Jesus Built My Hotrod.
I’m not a fan of the thrash throat vocals. The rest — pretty good.
It was fine but not my favorite thing.
.... steppin' on Motorhead's jock while running everything through electronics and samplers but still coming up with something that sounded like nothing else ..... 3.5
I’m not a metal person, so obviously I didn’t really love this. It was OK and I think it executed what it was going for. Also I just thought I should note that I really like Ministry’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay”, but that’s poppier than the songs on this album.
Fruity. Requires the right mood!
I'm not generally a fan of the late 80s-early 90s hardcore scene, but I'll be dammed if this isn't WAY more interesting than 99% of the "hardcore" released these days. This record has an insane energy to it that you can't help but pay attention to. Complete with industrial flare, while maintaining some of the best aspects of predecessors like Judas Priest or Megadeath, this feels like the ideal metal record for that kid who was pissed off at his parents in 92.
A delirious freefall into the oily, mechanized mouth of industrial metal's apocalyptic wasteland.
This was a dumb fun metal album. I assume they were one of the earlier bands to meld industrial sounds with metal so that was kind of interesting. Like NIN if Reznor didn’t take himself so seriously and I really like NIN but this was surprisingly refreshing. The production was quite impressive. They definitely deserve credit for doing something innovative here. 3 stars
Pretty cool metal album. Very thrashy. It feels like a slighlty darker/more experimental metallica.
Kept my awake during my morning shift. Good listenable but not as unique as i expect from this list at least.
Nice mix of metal and dance. Never thought I’d say that. 3 stars
This album was pretty good, not really a stand out for me though.
Pleasantly surprised by this album. Catchy and heavy.
I've heard of Ministry before, but I've never listened to one of their albums, and industrial metal isn't really a genre that I'm familiar with. Overall though, I thought this album was pretty good. The album starts off with a bang, with blazing drumming and a fuzzy, driving guitar rhythm, which really snagged my attention. The synthesized sounds are incredibly unique too, and add a really great depth to the sound. This is easily one of the most unique metal albums I've ever listened to, and I imagine this influenced countless other bands in the nineties (White Zombie, Korn, Marilyn Manson, etc.). As unique as I thought this album was, it was pretty repetitive, and apart from "Jesus Built My Hotrod," it doesn't really go anywhere interesting. This isn't the type of album I'd go back to, but I'm glad I got to branch out and listen to it.
Had to listen through only one ear which definitely didn’t do this any favors. Decent album though, some nice pummeling grooves and atmosphere. I prefer my industrial more metal scrap and less metal music (unless it’s Godflesh)
Wow this was hard, and really good for a metal album. Some of the last songs were a little too , but overall I found it to be a solid metal album
Qué me pareció?
- I like the speed - the distorted voice has its moments - definitely industrial metal - the high pitched squeaking noise definitely gave me a headache
"You bang too much..." Energetic, repetitive, dark and entertaining. Then it abruptly stopped entertaining me and started irritating me.
Ministry surprised me from the start, as “N.W.O.” had me bopping my head to the beat and the thrashing guitars of the rest of the album kept the momentum going. It was like Metallica, but with guttural growling instead of James Hetfield’s pretentious vocals. Which was actually a good thing. Then you throw in a bunch of random industrial sounds that actually often seem to mesh really well with their dynamic? Why does all of this work? There was plenty of snarling electronic weirdness, woven through random spoken audio samples, but I somehow found it fitting rather than off-putting. But I should have stuck to just listening. The actual title of this album is “ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ,” though it is more commonly known as “Psalm 69” or “Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs.” This indulgent nonsense of a title is actually a reference to British occultist Aleister Crowely’s “Book of Lies,” but more importantly is an indication of Ministry’s juvenile obsession with the number 69, and the reason I now know that Wikipedia navigation popups can contain explicit images.
Cool industrial.
3.4. I think a 17 year old me would have really been into this if I would have listened to it.
LOUD SOUND ...and abrupt stop LOUD SOUND ...and abrupt stop LOUD SOUND ...and abrupt stop LOUD SOUND ...and abrupt stop Its called art honey.. Surrounds you from the get go.. only to let go of you.. MWAH bitch... Its mr bad music here..
Yep. Well, ok. Hmm. That's more or less my feelings on this. First 2 tracks were bangers, then it got weird and silly, and finally slow and boring. Scarecrow has a massive vibe of How Soon is Now running through it.
It's your run-of-the-mill, honest to god, industrial metal, with music as streamlined as possible. Funny thing is, somebody is listening to it non-ironically. Seriously though, just an average album, pretty different than all of the 70s music this list is filled in, which is definitely a plus. As a general fan of metal music I was trying hard to like it, but it's just too mindbending for me, whatever that means. But it's definitely a cool interruption on this list.
Ministry's "Psalm 69": A High-Octane Thrill Ride Through Industrial Chaos If you ever wondered what it sounds like when heavy metal thrash and club music have a lovechild, Ministry's "Psalm 69" is your answer. This album isn't just music; it's a full-throttle experience, akin to an action-packed scene set in a gritty, neon-lit nightclub. The standout track "Jesus Built My Hotrod" is well-known and for good reason, but it's the unexpectedly mellow "Scare Crow" that steals the show. It's a groovy oasis amidst the album's frenetic pace, earning a well-deserved spot on any "Bad Ass Slow Rock" playlist. While "Psalm 69" might not be an album you'd play from start to finish on a regular basis, it's perfect for those 2 AM drives when you need something to electrify the night. It’s a classic example of industrial music’s raw power, weaving together the relentless energy of metal with the pulsating rhythms of club beats. In short, Ministry’s "Psalm 69" is for those who like their music loud, intense, and unabashedly bold – a perfect soundtrack for the nocturnal adventurer.
The land of rape and honey är ju en femma. Likaså låtar som The nature of love och så.
I am internally polarized this was so silly 3.5/5
This is a tale of 2 albums. Half #1 is one of the best 90s Metal albums full stop. Half #2 is barely listenable for me personally. I get what they were going for, but it has not aged particularly well. Plus the production all around is real rough and really kills the back half. Top tracks: N.W.O., Just One Fix, Hero, Jesus Built My Hotrod
Fun moments but this album gets a little samesy. I really love Jesus Built my Hotrod so 3
I enjoyed the instrumentals for the most part, but the screaming grates on me. Once again I just am not sure I have the musical fortitude to weather an entire metal album.
Heavy shit not super screamy. Fun listen
Heavy metal innit
Önnur umferð. Illa fyrirkallaður. 3,5.
Early 90s hard rock / metal / punk.... kind of badass. 3 stars
Went in with low expectations, ended up presently surprised at points. Highlight was definitely the shoegaziness of “Scare Crow”
Fun metal rocker.
Oh it just gets all angry and loud and fast and occasionally slow and ponderous and it’s all a bit fanciful and silly but they know and like what they’re doing and so does an audience somewhere I suppose.
Aggressive and Christian
Different but a decent listen.
this is the type of shit that calls pocononce out of the jungle for his annual reproductive season.
I should hate this...but I don't. It's in a weird place of music. Sometimes it seems like it's going to go really hard and it does but it's also good music unless some of the other crap I've heard. I can't quite figure it out. I don't hate it but it's also something I would never start listening to on any sore or regular basis. Hard to rate so I guess 3 out of 5.
Music like this is sort of more silly than it is scary.
Much of the content I don't find very appealing but I am drawn to the intense driving sound of the music.
Pretty fun!
I don't love thrash/industrial metal, but there's elements I really enjoy. It's a fine line to walk for me between unlistenable and absolute banger. A band like Slipknot will make some of my favorite tracks and then half the album is offensive noise. But I think it's that willingness to make something truly "awful" that leads to so many great and memorable tracks. Likewise, this album starts really strong with N.W.O and Just One Fix, before assaulting your ears with TV II then getting into the weird shit (and fun campy Rob Zombie-ish sound with Jesus Built My Hotrod). I want to like this album more but with so much chaos it wears you down, and the back half just starts to feel like a drag.
Brani Preferiti: - "N.W.O."
solid industrial album. not my favorite but certainly a unique sound compared with everything else in this list. production and mixing seemed really flat though... everything felt very compressed in terms of EQ and i think the album suffers as a result (even if this was a stylistic choice). songs are hit and miss but yeah, interesting stuff overall. favorites: jesus built my hotrod, scare crow, psalm 69
6/10 Ministry actually started out really good! their first few album were awesome! but then it just turned into awkward metal that I really don’t care for
90s metal hut different
3.1 - Perfect for when you’re huffing whippets behind the mall with your boys.
Pretty interesting. Kinda like a combo of RATM and Primus so it goes hard but also goofy.
Hardcore
this was my 68th album from 1001, most insane disappointment. it's not too shabby, i typically enjoy industrial stuff. the hit single "jesus built my hotrod" has a pretty funny story behind it i learned while trying to make sense of what the fuck the singer was talking about.
Enjoy most of this, but it became a bit much towards the end of the album
metarl
A harsh and difficult listen at times, but what sets Ministry apart than say... Motorhead (or like-minded bands) is that the songs don't sound exactly the same. On the surface, it sounds like a lot of yelling and roaring, but there is some substance and intelligence behind the songs and I like the music. I listened to it all, didn't love it, but it could been a whole lot worse.
Made me lol a couple times and some cool moments but mostly boring
Very strange. Reading up on this band (that started up as Synth-pop 'Flock-of-Seagulls' wannabes) they veered towards metal and religious iconography which ended up with this Aleister Crowley inspired piece. It doesn't feel authentic. It's not bad, just neither one thing or another. I ended up listening to them in 1983 'With Sympathy' and just couldn't get my head around the change. Like the album cover though.
I have a soft spot for Ministry. I don't really love this, but I do like it and that should be worth something. Maybe the sense of humor sets this metal/industrial music apart from other stuff? Sure, let's go wtih that.
This is the missing link between thrash and nu metal. It's not missing anymore. To me when this came out, it was a noisier, more sarcastic, less heavy version of what Godflesh already did a couple of years before. Favorite song: Psalm 69.
If NIN's Broken and Metallica's Kill Em' All had a baby, you'd probably get something along the lines of this. The whole sonic landscape of this album was lifted straight from the early 90s, like you took a grudge record and put it on warpspeed and peppered in a ton of heavy thrash riffs. I mean look at the ridiculousness of Jesus Built My Hotrod, it's lyrics are all over the place, but god it's actually fantastic as an industrial metal song with a great heavy riff and driving beat. Only reason I can't give it higher is because the last track felt like completely noisy nonsense.
PREFS : N.W.O., Just One Fix, Hero, Jesus Built My Hotrod MOINS PREF : Grace
not into hardrock
My partner hates this album; it was their first one star. However, while this list was their first time listening to this, I have some experience with these songs due to my father, namely "Jesus Built My Hotrod". Hell, I've been to a Ministry concert, even if I was only their for Primus. So, there is definitely some leverage here for me that makes me enjoy it a bit more, I'd even say the before mentioned song is my favorite thrash/industrial metal song of all time. Overall, the album isn't really too much for me, I'd say it's too mindless as it starts to unwind, which I'm sure was the goal, but it makes it difficult "listening" music. There are definitely things here I like enough, however, to get it into that middle of the road ranking, and I could see myself jamming to some of this while driving.
I've definitely heard of this band but I do not recall ever hearing their music. Once again, this project shows me why I keep coming back. I've been introduced or reintroduced to so much great music, especially in styles and genres I overlook too often and too easily. This band and this album probably would not have shown up for me elsewhere, and even though it's pretty far outside my usual listening tendencies -- way more heavy metal and thrashy than I ever tune into -- it's incredible. Holy Schneikies, this band can play. I don't know how much of what I'm hearing might have been sped up by any production effects, but I have a feeling that this group can play absurdly fast yet super tight. Again, not usually my favored style, and I can only take so much of it at a time, but, whoa, they are amazing.
I have tried to listen to this one lots of times and I can't seem to be able to get through it, so there it is
Not bad for metal
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Hero (4) 2 - Jesus Built My Hotrod (5) 3 - N.W.O. (1)
The best riffs had the worst vocals.
Not something I would listen to often - BUT, this kicks ass for what it is. 3.5/5
Industrial rock, so pretty polarizing but not bad. hard to give it less than a 3 because I'm not a big listener in that genre so I don't want to be too harsh.
A blistering display of industrial oddness. The one-two punch of the frenetic Jesus Bought My Hot Rod and the doomy atmospheric heaviness of Scare Crow is a massive highlight at the centre of an assured and exciting but somewhat uneven album
Not exactly my style, but it was kinda banging sometimes, just not consistently enough. Also it gets a bit more bland in the later stages + some weird stuff
Not bad but most of the time I was thinking that I should be listening Rammstein or other metal band instead. Guitars were pretty good but sometimes vocal is too harsh
metal
Genres: Industrial metal Formed: Run time: 9 songs, 44 min 43 sec ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ (commonly known as Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs or simply Psalm 69). Someone has spent far too much time incorporating the number 69 into the name and album. Very clever and all, but really? You’ll get a snigger from a teenager (perhaps) but no one else is going to give it a second thought. I bet this sounds amazing with the volume cranked up high. The bass, the speed and energy are incredible. I imagine the fans are called hardcore and drink Red Bull. I can see it would be great to listen to if you had shit to get done and no time to do it! Or perhaps to accompany a high intensity work out. I’m afraid Industrial metal isn’t something I’m interested in. I can’t even imagine it being an acquired taste. I suppose it like any type of music, it’s either your thing or it isn’t. That said, I’ve listened a second time and am enjoying it more…
Before today, I had heard of the song Jesus Built My Hotrod, but didn't know who sang it. Conveniently, that song is on this record. Ministry are an industrial metal band, whose sound is In line with other such acts of the early 90's as: White Zombie, Godsmack, or Marilyn Manson. By times, their music is straight thrash/speed metal with sampling throughout (this is where it reminds me of Godsmack). There is a constant electronic/industrial vibe throughout as well, and the lead singers vocals are fuzzy and distorted. By times the distortion/screaming made the lyrics hard to understand, but overall it gave a doom metal kind of vibe to the whole thing. This album touched on topics such as, most notably, organized religion. The song Psalm 69 didn't pull any punches in this regard with such lyrics as: "The body of Christ looked unto me A preacher with God-given hands He wants you to suck on the Holy Ghost And swallow the sins of man" I thought from the start that the familiar song Jesus Built My Hotrod would win for my favourite song on the album, but the song Hero was a classic speed/thrash metal song with a surprisingly deep message about war. Overall, an average listen today. I can see how this music was instrumental in influencing many bands to come, it's just not something I would gravitate to every day. The song Scare Crow was ~8:30 long, and most of that was just a heavy electronic beat sustained for 3 minutes at a time with 30 second lyrical breaks. The constant looping beat just lulls you into a trance more than anything I found, because nothing else changed. No tempo changes, or guitar solos, just 3 minutes of the same looping beat. Had these long breaks been omitted, this album would probably have scored higher with me. Favourite songs: Hero, Psalm 69, Jesus Built My Hotrod, N.W.O., Just One Fix Least favourite song: TV II 3/5
Starting to think these aren’t actually psalms…
comecou bem
I bought the Jesus Built My Hotrod CD maxi single sometime in the early 90’s & have never stopped loving it. It contains the Redline/Whiteline version of the song, which, at 8:11, is considerably longer than the album version. The guest vocal by Butthole Surfer Gibby Haynes is to die for. The CD single also contains a version of TV Song, but, until today, I had never heard the rest of the album. I love the frenetic approach of the music. The devil voice that recurs is somewhat annoying, but, in the end, doesn’t really detract from the impetus created by the music. The title track is a winner. In fact, I really enjoyed the whole disc. And I love the fact that Paul Barker’s nom-de-plume as co-producer was Hermes Pan - the genius who choreographed 17 of Fred Astaire’s films.
I turned this on with some trepidation but it was actually quite a fun listen. Mad genre, no idea how people get into it but hey, it's part of music's rich tapestry.
There were definitely issues (some tunes were lackluster, too repetitive) but i actually found this to be a really fun album. Also it helps it can be pretty funny. Jesus built my hotrod was the definite highlight though. A decent record.
Not really my cup of tea but i appreciate the music
Good rhythms, very thrash-like. Clear satirical approach to contemporary Christian metal just by the album title alone, lyrics are as expected - sinister, ominous. Enjoyed most of the guitars (especially the aggression), but the vocals just aren't my cup of tea with it so fuzzed and unclear.
Sort of like a cross between peak era Metallica, Big Black (and Nine Inch Nails?). A very industrial, nihilistic sound overall with a little bit of techno and hip-hop thrown in for good measure via the interesting use of samples and general electronic wizardry. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
This album is so industrial, grease flooded out while I played it
Not bad, but not really what I'm looking for in industrial metal
ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ - commonly known as Psalm 69 - is the fifth album by American industrial metal band Ministry. Psalm 69 was a critical and commercial success upon release, and is considered to be Ministry's most successful album, having been certified gold in Canada and Australia, and platinum in the US. This thrashy industrial metal was interesting to listen to. It wasn't bad - in fact the production was good, but it's not my particular music taste. Metal fans should love this album.
I can very much see how people are into this
Industrial icons, a little bracing for a Sunday morning but really good.
I'm really enjoying the music itself, but the vocals have been a bit difficult to listen to. I'm interested in listening to their other discography as I'm a fan of Industrial music.
So many amazing albums from the first half of the 90s. This isn't one of them.
Weird, silly, not amazing
Epico
Geez okay guys
I'm team "Make Ministry Synth Again" (With Sympathy is one of the best synth-goth albums of all-time), but I appreciate Ministry's industrial era. It's not my favorite, but Jesus Built My Hotrod is a classic. 3.5 P.S. Uncle Al, you're a weenie for turning your back on your synth roots. You were so great with that fake British accent. Good times.
\m/
Not bad...
Was iets te ruig imo haha
This was a fun listen.
Industrial is not for me. I’m uninterested, as always in the hardcore/metal vein, in the various permutations of shouty/screechy/growly vocals. And the content here - I’m not offended by the “extreme blasphemy” kick, but it’s fairly boring as transgressive attitudes go.
Jjn
Heavy pounding rock , ok for dancing or running, not listening quietly!
This album was well put-together and orchestrated, but ultimately, the anti-religious messaging was very dated and distracting. Yeah, organized religion and Christianity kinda suck... ok. That aside, there were some fascinating rhythmic choices and the guitars chugged along the whole time. While the music is solid, I just can't help but be distracted by all the atheistic fervor of a pedantic middle school contrarian.
Not my thing but a decent sense of fun and weirdness kept me listening to the end. I’m no expert on the genre but it feels pretty advanced for the early 90, probably had an influence on things to come.
Just what I expected after looking at the album cover. Getting some Metallica and Rammstein vibes. Pretty solid throughout, except for the last two tracks.
Good energy, but it does get a bit monotonous
Not my favorite album or genre, but I appreciate it!
Un essentiel à connaître du métal industriel.
Great metal but not my genre
Heavy as hell, but with tunes and lyrics. Catchier than I expected, with no compromise on their aims.
Best Song: Jesus Built My Hotrod. Now see, this is exactly the kind of silliness I appreciate in a metal album. Leaning fully into the "scatting" works well here at utilizing the metal vocals as an "instrument", but even still it gravitates a bit too close to Kid Rock's "bawitdaba" here. Worst Song: TV II. Everything here comes off very flat, and the repeated stopping and starting means the song never feels like it has room to take off. Overall: I like metal, but I've never heard this before. Very industrial. Feels like excellent music to work out with, preferably under a dilapidated bridge or in an actively working factory. Like a lot of this sub-genre though, it really just functions as this continuous, vaguely aggressive background music without ever stepping outside itself to provide you with anything that really grasps your attention.
Industrial funcionou bem em um álbum completo.
I like a bunch of songs, mostly the first half of the album. It's like 3.5* to me.
I've been craving something heavy lately and this somewhat filled the void. Some good stuff in here, but also a lot of very short repeated loops and annoying background noises that distract from the goodness.
This isn't really my kind of thing, but it's alright so far, given that fact. It's really just the singing that I'm not super into. Like, the guitar is cool, especially on Just One Fix; and actually the singing on this one isn't as bad. But then, other songs are just kind of yelling over frantic guitar (looking at you, TV II). I feel a bit torn here; parts of this I do kind of like, and I feel like I want to like it, but somehow it doesn't quite do it? I dunno....
Interesting but not something I can see myself coming back to very often
want to give it a 4 because metal, but only a few songs are worth listening to.
Pièce préférée: Jesus Built My Hotrod
Unique blend of thrash metal and industrial music. I think anyone who liked NIN would love this album. I liked the heaviness a lot actually, but most the songs felt little bit too repetitive for me. An enjoyable listen, but I probably won't return; I've got plenty of heavy music that is a little more interesting to me. But the musical chops were there; the rhythm section is awesome. I thought the second half was better. I think my favorite song was Scarecrow, that song felt apocalyptic. Also Psalm 69 was worth remembering, those "Oh Fortuna" style vocals at the beginning with the metal guitar was fantastic; didn't like the sexual lyrics at all though, just the music. I can get behind devilish lyrics but I've never liked sexual lyrics. This song would horrify my parents.
Well was prepared tobjate this album, but I didn't. The shouting vocals are something I will never get used to but the musc; fast, full and dramatic made up for it. I did get a little bored at the last couple of songs so I would say best served in small doses. 3.5 🌟
Fun!
lots of yelling, not a lot of singing
After nu, the metal subgenre I struggled to get into the most was industrial. I had a serious chip on my shoulder about synths in my heavy music for some reason, although I took to Type O right away and Neurosis eventually became one of my favorite bands. I never got the hype for Nine Inch Nails, and still don’t, while I only slightly understand Ministry a little better. I say that I liked Ministry better because I loved how batshit “Jesus Built My Hotrod” is, but most of their other stuff tends to rank as mid for me. And that’s still mostly true, but I have grown an appreciation for the singles. Otherwise, this all sounds pretty samey to me, and I don’t see myself coming back to it anytime soon. But points for being a relatively brisk 45 minutes. C-, could lose the minus depending on my mood
