Reviews (page 2 of 8)

A wonderfully innovative album that breaks the mold by using weird and unconventional instruments. It’s has a modern feel to it because of this. Great study/work album as well.

An unexpected delight. I had heard a bit from this band without actually seeing the bigger picture so this was very surprising

I liked this!!!

Something about this really grabbed me, it's definitely going into my regular "get stuff done" rotation

Pigtail parece música concreta remite a King Crimson y a Eno. Magistrales

Cute and good! I knew some of the penguin cafe orchestra, but i didn’t realize it was 1976. Definitely ahead of its time, i would have guessed late 90s at earliest

Wow, how have I never heard of this before? Finds like this make listening through 50 Elvis Costello albums worthwhile.

Perhaps surprisingly, I really like this

As soon as the needle dropped on this it sounded familiar. I cannot say why. If I've ever heard it before I cannot say where nor when. What a surprisingly experimental, sweet, and fun 45 minutes; damn-near perfect Sunday afternoon listen. This is the 74th record I've listened to, and now stands as the first one in which I have made a new discovery that really resonates. Music From the Penguin Café is just charming as all get out. A soundtrack to a cute indie film about romance or something that no one has ever seen and is about two people who are friends who fall for each other by accident. Probably directed by a young Wes Anderson.  I don't tend to go for stuff like this, but here we are, making a discovery I don't have some snarky story about and I just, I dunno, like it. Just a cool drink of water that conjures up peachy sunsets and sharing an ice cream cone with someone you have a crush on. It ventures out with the improvisation and melancholy here and there and I like it even more for that. Of course, after listening and going in mostly blind I learn that Brian Eno produced it. That explains everything. Every track works. Nothing on this record annoyed me. A good way to decorate time. Thanks, 1001. Moments like this is why I started doing this project in the first place.  The album art is fantastic. Can't go wrong with a clean Helvetica typeface. The cheery blue border, something I would ordinarily not be a fan of, actually helps the composition. But of course, the painting of the naked guy with a penguin head delivers just enough WTF that it tells us what we are in for, and it's a puzzle. It's whimsical and there is a palm tree in the middle of an alpine meadow. Is the other penguin a waiter? It raises a shit-ton of questions, but the most important one is how can I travel to this magical place and have a twee AF holiday?

Oh this SMACKS, thank goodness. The electric guitar and strings (cello in particular) lift and enhance each other’s parts. They find and expand on melodies without repeating themselves. Another gem I would’ve overlooked without this project. It’s pretty and exciting (and sometimes ominous). Forward-thinking without pretension. Also, I love the album art. I want it in my house. Preferably in the kitchen.

lovely! 5/5

Fun find

This one is relaxing and soothing. It Takes you on this trip.

When I saw this bands name it struck a chord as I had heard them previously years ago on the John Peel show or similar and made mental note to listen further. But I never did until today so another thumbs up for this list. Might have been this album I heard all those years ago as the release date fits. What a radical album it must have been then and in my view still is. Think the musical whimsical style has been copied many times since but this album (thinking here of the likes of The Cinematic Orchestra) must have been the first of its genre. A very pleasant listen and an album I must add to my collection. 5/5 19/9/25

This was one of the my best discoveries when first going through the book, the artwork and even the blurb that accompanied the album were so evocative that I kinda guessed what the album was going to sound like before listening to it. And the backstory of the band is intriguing as well, Simon Jeffes had a vision of a Penguin Cafe after eating some bad fish in France?? That has to be one of the funniest origin stories in all of music. The music is obviously great. Hard to describe pastoral chamber folk with some modern classical influences. Even within the band's output, this debut album is unique. For instance, it includes more guitar than their following albums and as well as their only songs with vocals. I completely understand why this was chosen to be on the book, but don't miss out on their four other albums, or even the "sequel" band by Jeffes' son Arthur simply called Penguin Cafe, who have been making great records for over a decade now. Key tracks: Penguin Cafe Single In a Sydney Motel Giles Farnaby's Dream Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter Hugebaby

Great album, really interesting music but also straightforwardly enjoyable.

++*: Chartered Flight ++: Penguin Cafe Single, From the Colonies, Surface Tension (Where the Trees Meet the Sky), Milk, Coronation, Giles Farnaby's Dream, Pigtail, The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter, Hugebaby +: In a Sidney Motel 9,6/10

Tolles Album, entspannt und entspannend und doch aufregend und anregend. Schöner Fund.

I love Penguins and particularly partial to Cello's - more on the fence on Brian Eno - but really enjoyed this combo.

Music from the Penguin Cafe I had no idea of what to expect from this, the only thing I knew ahead of it was that Eno was involved in its production and release. That may have pre-disposed me to liking it, which, predictably, I did. It’s a great combination of oddness and convention, the melding of pop and classical instrumentation isn’t completely novel, but the orchestral elements are superb, moving from pretty and delicate to foreboding and unsettling with an excellent strangeness and grace. It’s great how the cellos and strings work with the electric piano on Penguin Cafe single, recalling some of Macca/George Martin’s tea-room orchestra arrangements on the White Album, and the rest of the Zopf suite is lovely, the electric piano nicely prominent and the strings recalling more White Album and also some of Nick Drake’s string arrangements on something like Surface Tension (and Chartered Flight has a similarity to Horn also). I like how different classical elements, baroque, far eastern, string quartet, chamber music for eg, slide into each other, particularly on hose Zopf Tracks, the run from Surface Tension to Giles Farnaby’s Dream is great, before the Radiophonic Workshop spaciness of Pigtail closes out that side. The Sound of Someone You Love Who’s Going Away and It Doesn’t Matter is really lovely, it slightly recalls Nico, but it’s a beautiful, melancholic tune on piano and guitar, with a slightly unsettling section, and the violin and cello are superb. I thought this was fantastic from start to finish, really easy to enjoy and slightly unusual and singular, kind of childlike and naive in places, off kilter and out of place in others but also sweetly melodic and harmonic throughout, and another album I doubt I would have listened to without the list. 5. Love the cover too. 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧 Playlist submission:The Sound of Someone You Love Who’s Going Away and It Doesn’t Matter

I found this enchanting. It gave me vintage vibes; at times simple melodies that I imagine someone with no classical training who's tried to write a classical piece would come up with. I get the feeling it would irk a classical purist. But it carries you through these moments, oftentimes sounding like a child's TV programme from the 70s - Mr Benn, or Bagpuss (the organ of 'Giles Farnaby's dream') or perhaps the wimsy of the Snowman's incidental music ('Penguin Cafe Single'). 'Milk' introduces some more experimental elements, and a minimalist sound without the strings; I can barely believe what my ears are seeing as there's more than a whiff of the Kid-A-era Radiohead about it (25 years before Kid-A). I was only slightly surprised when I discovered post-listening, that this has Eno's fingerprints are over it. The album does go a bit too route 1 with 'The Sound of Someone You Love' and 'Hugebaby' as relaxing as they are. Maybe Eno was out to lunch. It's right on the cusp. Ultimately I think it rather unique; a sometimes charming, sometimes fascinating listen.

This was an experience... A good one, I think! Really enjoyed how surreal this one felt!

This is exactly what this list is meant for--not dragging me through some dad's classic rock collection, one agonizing record at a time, but instead to showcase music that bends and blends genres, may be a little obscure, or otherwise challenge a listener out of a comfort zone. I've know Penguin Cafe Orchestra, but had never heard this album. It's a delight, a soundtrack for the stream of consciousness in my head.

86/1001. This album (and the band behind it) is a living proof that humans with penguin heads do exist and that they make interesting, odd but gentle music. I've known it for the last 30 years since I've owned this album and a few others, and cannot rate this lower than 5, otherwise the hatrded of these demigods will be upon us, they'll curse us, making us unable to incorporate ukuleles on pop / jazz / folk / rock / soul / easy listening music ever again (they will be allowed only on musical albums which contain sampled tape loops of telephone ringing tones).

Lovely

- art -

pretty good and notable

i really wish i could have given the kraftwerk album a 5. this album was beautiful

Excellent music by penguins.

5/5 i like the idea of this album

What a pleasant surprise! I'd never heard of this group before, I don't typically go for instrumental-only stuff, and it's from 1976 so I did not have high expectations...but I enjoyed the hell out of it! This was beautiful. Good composition that was well executed. I can't believe this, but I think this is getting a 5. 4.5

vivid, emotional and engaging

This is one of my favorite albums we have done so far. I am doing this as a catch-up review but the name has had me intrigued since I missed it. After seeing the album art I was already endeared. 3 tracks in, I had to learn more about the group and of course, for the 6th time on this list, I saw Brian Eno as an executive producer. That man is everywhere! "The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter" really carried that narrative from top to bottom. Gut wrenching but evocative. Ill certainly be looking at more of their albums!

10/10 some of the most beautiful orchestration and instrumentation I’ve ever heard it’s difficult for me to pick a favorite song, but if I had to choose one I’d likely go with Zopf: In a Sydney Motel

Gonna drop a 5 on this bc this was such an unexpectedly fantastic discovery!! That first song will stick w me for sure!

I loved it

Adore everything about this

Great music Memorable sequences Layered sounds Beautiful textures A great find

go back to it, such a interesting title

Such a fun album. Ahead of its time

I enjoyed this obscure little nugget far more than I had any reasonable business to. And then I proceeded to ingest the entire discography of studio albums: Music from the Penguin Cafe Penguin Cafe Orchestra Broadcasting from Home Signs of Life Union Cafe I was not disappointed.

I had no idea what this was all about and the cover art did not look promising, but I actually loved this album and was sad when it was over. Reminded me of Wilco and others. Shockingly modern sounding but released in 1976!?

Huh?!? I'm confused. What is this??? Well, I wouldn't say it's boring—I assume it's experimental art? HaHaHa - Funny for the brain Another fun fact: the only album I've listened to in one sitting without skipping... I'm proud of myself.

Still catching up - I chose this one because Penguins but had no idea what to expect. I instantly loved it. Adding The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away And It Doesn't Matter to my favorites

Could not Stream it.

This was tite

Totally unexpected. I knew some of their music from adverts and was expecting a pleasant, if slightly dull, coffee shop background music type of vibe. Instead, I get a weird, unsettling collection of gorgeous melodies and off key sound design choices. I'm pre-emptively giving a 5 because I think this will reveal more on repeated listens. Would put next to Plaid or Boards of Canada, rather than Morcheeba or more laid back stuff.

I rate penguin cafe single a 5 star because I like the instruments that are in it and how smooth it is finally the instruments sound nice and beautiful. I rate zopf a 2/5 stars because its not really for me and its just like a song that sounds weird. I rate zopf in hotel a 4 star because the beat is really good and and its beautiful.

Do you like music with not many lyrics? I personally don't. I did not like this album much because it is not my favorite style of music and it also sounds a bit weird. I would recommend this album if you like to listen to songs that sound a bit unusual in a way.

Do you want to listen to some music with a lot of violin playing? well on penguin cafe single it has a lot of violin! I rate it ⭐⭐⭐⭐ because there is a lot of violin playing and a lot of electric guitar and I think there. I recommend this song. Do you want to listen to a song that has some guitar and electric guitar? well in zopf you can! There is a lot of guitar playing and I rate it ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend it. Do you want to listen to some music with some calming guitar? well in zopf in hotel you can! it also has a calming beat to it. I rate it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐! I highly recommend it!

This is an excellent album and this list needs more records like this on it.

Charming

This is what I came to the 1001 for. I have no idea who or what Penguin Cafe Orchestra is, but that was very fun and unique and sonically pleasing. Fave tracks: Penguin Cafe Single, most of the Zopf suite, Chartered Flight 4.5/5

Meine bisher überraschendste Neuentdeckung in diesem Projekt.

Interesting classical style album with interesting arrangements

It is so rare when I find myself listening to an album that I never want to end. I loved every moment of this and was utterly deflated when it came to a close.

I really enjoy their music. This album is not perfect, but I complemented it with their NPR Tiny Desk presentation and for sure it deserves a 5.

I’d never heard of this album before and didn’t know what to expect. Absolutely beautifully bonkers brilliance

this is an incredibly difficult album to rate. i don’t know that’s it’s really a 5 but anything else feels wrong. this album just did so much stuff that i’ve never really heard before in this specific way. the jumps from almost atonal stuff to some of the sweetest melodies out there was just magical. will be talking about this for a while and that is what brings it to a 5

This was an absolute delight.

I never heard of this until it popped up yesterday. I love this record, and can't even begin to explain why I do.

Well, this was a lovely and atmospheric album that I didn’t expect.

Great album

Having an incredibly special moment listening to this surprising, beautiful, peculiar penguin music. If you listen while staring at the cover art, it really makes sense. Is profound, even. Music is always going to find a way to reach people when made honestly and from the soul. My heart is full. Bless you, penguins!

It was really nice music and sometimes it told stories through the melodies. Really good

LOVED IT!!!!!! This concept is executed to perfection. I love the artwork, the mythology, and most importantly, the music. Each song is a perfect match to its sentiment. I always get so emotional listening to pure instrumental. I was tearing up during the Sound of Someone You Love Who’s Going Away and It Doesn’t Matter. Reminded me of fado. The raw power of music, ladies and gentleman! This experimental folksy stuff is my jam, and I hate to even try to characterize it as such. It’s a genre bending album with international influences and pure creativity. Food poisoning will do that to you I guess. But The Penguin Cafe sounds like love and harmony and I’d like to go there someday.

I resisted the temptation to Google this album and artist before the review..... Never heard this music before but it feels nostalgic and familiar.... What an amazing sound. Vibrant and youthful. Sumptuous strings and cranking keys. Sounds like some sort of amazing theme tune to a TV show or semi Avant Garde film.... This is what I came to this list for! To be exposed to good old shit that's new to me.

I couldn’t tell you the amount of times I’ve seen this record on sale and dithered over buying it. My hesitancy was because I was only really familiar with Music From A Found Harmonium, which isn’t even on this album, but I do really love that song. Today, I can say that I’ve listened to the album in full and it is every bit as lovely as I wanted it to be. It’s hard to really buy a genre on Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Modern classical sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s where my mind went to. This will absolutely be getting many more listens.

Wow. Excellent. It's timeless, I would have expected this to be dated.

Oh fuck me, apparently there's 1089 albums now not 1084. All that pondering and reflection on the park bench yesterday for nothing. Ah well, the voyage continues for five more and I'm glad for it. Regarding this album - Someone call Pingu cause this shit slaps. The Eno special sauce might (or not) have something to do with it. The Sound of Someone You Love was particularly and surprisingly moving. Noot noot indeed.

I awoke from a dream where I visited The Penguin Cafe and desperately tried to fall back asleep.

Experimental, but in a way I enjoy a lot more than some others. Funky or calm one minute, and eerie the next. The Sound Of Someone You Love Who's Going Away And It Doesn't Matter is a perfect song name.

Odd and lovely. Serious but doesn't take itself seriously. Confident but never arrogant. Fun but not wacky, It feels like a score that should have more motifs to latch onto, but is too happy creating a delicious atmosphere to care what you think. Gorgeous and unique.

Incredible ambient music with even more incredible cover art. It just makes me happy and want to stay at the penguin cafe for as long as I want

Wow! I had no idea what this was going to be like and in the end, I really did love it. It sound very much like soundtrack music. It’s odd but very musical….a little dark at times, and sometime whimsical. I may have to listen to this one again.

This is cool stuff. Like an early Wes Anderson film, full of quirks and things that grab your senses.

This was so enjoyable. The mixture of string instruments with beautiful guitar. This wasn't juet an instrumental either. A few songs had some vocals to add to the great layers this record has. I truly felt like I was on a journey through this record. A lot of emotion conveyed in instruments.

what an absolute delightful surprise. bangers wall to wall love the instrumentals and songs with singing alike

It's pretty experimental. I like it.

I'd never heard of this but loved it as soon as I put it on. You can hear Eno all over it. Will definitely explore more their albums.

This was very nice and easy listening.

5 star, really like it

this was a great album. I'd never heard of them before and ended up listening to the rest of their albums. I'm in with this group!

Never heard this before. I should have. Quirky, weird, beautiful. Where is this cafe, I want to go there, like now?, please!?

Different, original... I loved it!

New to me, Great find

Beautiful and imaginative!

This is more pseudo-classical than pop, imo. Kinda surprised it’s on here. I like their unique and experimental style, though.

Great avant pop sorta shit

This album was absolutely phenomenal. Its perfect for a cafe setting or for the end of a party at around 3-4 in the morning. This album is a must listen!!!!

I had never heard of them but wow, excellent album. Different!

Loved this! Found it interesting and uplifting to listen to.

This is exactly the type of weird experimental shit I signed up for. I've never heard of this group or any of the musicians involved, but this album really clicked with me. I love the fusion of genres and styles, some of it sounds quite folky, other parts more prog rock or classical. I can see how this might have influenced quite a few modern indie and art rock bands too (particularly thinking of Neutral Milk Hotel, Arcade Fire and BCNR). I'll definitely be on the lookout for this on vinyl, and will be giving their other albums a listen too.

I can’t help giving this adorable album 5 stars! ⭐️ it’s so peculiar and at the same time easy to listen. I definitely want it on vinyl.

I actually really loved this and didn't expect to! it had the perfect amount of slight weirdness for me

I dunno how I discovered this band in 2019 but I did and I've loved them ever since. It feels like a little hidden gem that no one I have ever talked to has heard of. Great stuff and happy that others have discovered them through this.

Penguin Café Single- 5/5 Zopf - From the Colonies (For N.R.)- 4.8/5 Zopf - In a Sydney Motel- 5/5 Zopf - Surface Tension (Where the Trees Meet the Sky)- 3.7/5 Zopf - Milk- 4.1/5 Zopf - Coronation- 5/5 Zopf - Giles Farnaby's Dream- 5/5 Zopf - Pigtail- 4/5 The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter- 4.8/5 Hugebaby- 5/5 Chartered Flight- 4.8/5 Total- 4.7/5

Delightful! Playful!

had some really cool parts and some parts that felt like absolute wank but given the time it came out that's fair enough

What a treat! This sent me down a rabbit hole of discovery. The Penguin Cafe Orchestra is perfect for almost any mood.

What an amazing album from Brian Eno's label. The music is strange, varied and experimental but they manage to do it with a deep sense of calm and a lack of pretentiousness that's unusual in the avant garde. Very refreshing listen.

Had never heard of this project before, but this album is absolutely magical. Beautiful, colorful, and whimsical chamber music that feels way ahead of its time. The kind of album I could listen to forever. 4.5/5

Varried and interesting and whimsical and fun

Vooral daarom 5 sterren.

Love this

What a whimsical enjoyable listen. The only real misfire was "Pigtail", but still, when considered as a whole piece, the album is great.

I am completely charmed.

The cover and the name of the album and band had me predisposed to loving this. So what a relief to find that the music lived up to the expectations. It took me through a range of emotions, but mostly I just found it terribly interesting to listen to!

This is great stuff. I highly recommend most everything on Eno's early Obscure label imprint. My favorite being Gavin Bryars' "The Sinking Of The Titanic," with this being in the Top 3 or 4 albums released on the label.

great walking experience inquisitive music

This was such a perfect mix of weird minimalistic vibes for me. Inject more of this directly into my veins, please and thank you.

I love this. This is what my mind plays when I am in POLITE COMPANY.

Really great Peaceful and pensive, a bit avant-garde

yes. finally.

Did not know what this was, but really liked it. Interesting backstory.

Challenging at times but captivating and effortless. A great example of an album I never would have even heard of before this project.

Parfait avec le café du matin

PREFS : Penguin Cafe Single, From the Colonies, In a Sydney Motel, Coronation, Giles Farnaby's Dream, The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter, Chartered Flight MOINS PREF : Milk

I figured this would just be a fun name/cover, with average/bad music - boy, was I wrong. I really loved this one for a number of reasons. Wide range of instruments help create a diverse vibe, jumping between orchestral rock and psychedelic experimentation. The title track is my favorite, but I enjoyed every song on the album, and added 2 total. I actually listened to this on the way to work, and then again on the way home, and have a feeling I will be listening to this one a lot in the future. This album is exactly the type of stuff I came into this project searching for. 9.3/10

Way ahead of its time.

I was intrigued by the strange name and cover, and the wiki info and initial sound very much lived up to the strange expectations. This is the type of album I love seeing on this list: strange novelties and oddities. Music is only solid, but I have to give a full five for exemplifying what I want to see out of this list. Would love to stumble upon this at a used record store.

This was superb.

Wonderfully chilled, no where near as wierd or abstract as some of the reviews on here suggest. Really liked this.

Johnny Greenwood came to mind while listening to this. I love it when I'm surprised. I really enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Great discovery.

lovely!

Beautiful

This so lovely, great mix of classic and folk.

Fantastic. A sample flippers paradise.

LOVE IT OMG

Fabulous, always happy to listen to these guys

No idea who/what/when. But damn, sounds very joyful 5/5

Excellent

Really like this.

Troppo bravi

Gostei, muito bom para estudar. Destaque para "Zopf: Milk" e "The Sound Of Someone You Love Who's Going Away And It's Doesn't Matter", sendo que a última me lembra muito "Espatódea" do Nando Reis.

very good album! Unexpected gem and would like to listen some more.

Beste sanger: Penguin Café Single, The Sound Of Someone You Love og In A Sydney Motel.

Has big avantgarde energy

Love this

penguinnnnn!

lovely orchestra music

Penguins doing penguin things.

Never anything quite like this before. My only disappointment was the vocals at one point. The first tune has two riffs I swear I heard before. Either they ripped off someone or someone ripped them off. Or it's Miller's Lattice of Coincidence. I dunno but I dig it!

C'était marrant, un peu perché mais varié dans une vibe un peu cosy chill Bonne musique de fond pour faire de la peinture sur numéro ou un puzzle genre

beautiful vibe easy to listen album

This is the kind of thing I wanted to start this project for. This isn't something I would ever have sought out or chosen to listen to on my own. And yet, I will probably listen to it again. I dig it.

Really good

Really enjoyed it. Good crossover between rock & classical. Some amazing tracks. I'd rate it as 4.5/5 but can't so it gets rounded down.

Never heard of this, but have heard of Brian Eno, and he was involved. The guy rarely misses.

Interessant, recht experimentell

This was pretty cool! Kind of weird, kind of chill. I like the folk instruments intertwined with jazz instruments. It kind of takes you on some cool journeys.

Så jävla bra? Helt missat detta. Ett soligt Air.

Kul! Aldrig hört talas om tidigare. Landar i att jag älskar det här. Mysigt, vackert, bisarrt och ibland obehagligt soundtrack till en film som inte finns. Omslag: 6/5, musik: 4/5

Avant-pop? Space folk? Not sure what it is, and wonder if I should care. Cool. I just love this.

calming orchestra

Strange experience, listened while mowing the lawn. Interesting to say the least, took me on a journey

Some tracks are like chamber music - elegant, restful, thoughtful. An interesting, varied listen 4 stars

Pretty nice. I would like more penguin music.

I had no clue what I was in for here. What a surprise. Strange, intriguing and rather lovely. Definitely benefits from listening through headphones. I suspect I will be coming back to this one and getting something different from it each time

brian eno exec prod this, checks out absolutely sublime listen. something about this album feels narrative, the music says so much with very minimal vocals i really fuck with it.

There is something oddly familiar about this album. Like there are songs and snippets of songs that must have been sampled/borrowed/inspired other musicians. I kind of like it, like yeah this is kind of my jam.

Bom álbum de ouvir. Surpreso com o fato de ser instrumental e não me cansar. 2 faixas um pouco estranhas, o restante, é só bom de ouvir mesmo

Perfect!

This was a weird one, in a good way. What if Mike Oldfield was a member of the Beatles? There you go.

I finally have another song to add to my medieval playlist

This was very odd but I really enjoyed. Plus great band name.

This was exquisite. It’ll stay in rotation for me

Precioso y rarisimo album, muy cinematográfico. Mi portada favorita que salio hasta ahora. Ojala ser un penguin en el cafe donde suena esta music 9/10

The Sound of Someone You Love Who’s Going Away and It Doesn’t Matter is definitely one of the best 10+minute songs i’ve ever heard, it’s just a beautiful spaced out song that progresses perfectly and all instruments leave their mark, that made the album awesome for me, really good

This is an unusual mostly instrumental album. It's hard to believe this was released in 1976 - it's aged well, or was way ahead of its time. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs

This is exactly what I would expect a Penguin Cafe would sound like that. Very interesting compositions that are both experimental and highly listenable. No surprise here that Brian Eno was a major producer on this. Favorite Track - Penguin Cafe Single Least Favorite Track - Zopf: In a Sydney Motel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Muy bueno

Cool folk-electronica-pop med Brian Eno i bakgrunden. Bra easy listening, en fyra!

Terrifically unique sounding album

#300 At first glance, I thought the name of the band was really dumb. But having listened to it all the way through I get it - it's playful, childlike, absurd - and completely fits the music. "Penguin Cafe Single" sounds like Huey Lewis's "Heart and Soul." Huey must've been a PCO fan! So many of these songs are beautiful. This is not what I expected from the name, the cover, or some of the reviews here. I really enjoyed this. FOUR STARS

yayyyyyy first pull that Eno was involved in :) never really given this one a serious listen!! Am excited!! It's so cool how everything Eno touched was kind of at the Ethos of Ice-Nineing Muzak and he produced something as quaint as this. I'm not complaining. The arrangements are really gorgeous, dare I say, quirky. It has a straightforwardness that I always about other releases on E.G. Was not expecting vocals either!!! This does feel like a less-electronic, more ornate version of Another Green World. I love the subtle tape effects, drum machines, the vocoder-lite. Standouts: From the Colonies, MILK, Pigtail, THE SOUND OF SOMEONE YOU LOVE WHO'S GOING AWAY AND IT DOESN'T MATTER (I mean WOW!!!! What a centerpiece). Hugebaby counts as another devastating blow to my "Tremolo the only modulation effect that sounds good with guitar" take. Chartered Flight is an awesome closer. I love tone poems that deal with planes, or movement in transportation.

beautiful!! definitely a new favorite. got very excited when barrett told me that eno was involved with this one. i can hear some influence from his rock records in the 'Zopf' suite, but this feels a little rougher around the edges, which i enjoyed. 'The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter' is absolutely the highlight here, but i also thought 'Chartered Flight' was incredible

"executive produced by brian eno" oh i'm sure 3.8. we'll give him the 4. or will we? there's a lot of jazzy ambient shit you could listen to B4 death.

Love the album art. Interesting listen, very unique

A softer side of Eno

I like the Penguin Café Orchestra a lot and so I was prepared to like this a lot, but it let me down a bit. I was surprised to learn that they had been going since 1976. I was looking forward to Giles Farnaby's Dream and From the Colonies, but these versions are earlier ones? So maybe I would have chosen a later album of theirs, perhaps Broadcasting from Home or Signs of Life, both of which I would say are more accessible and with a fuller sound than this. Still, a relaxing listen. Four stars compared to my usual level of enjoyment of other albums from this list.

- Kind of love it to begin, definitely a welcome switch from some of the other genres I've been given - Strange blend of instruments that I really dig - Really no other way to describe it aside from 'Penguin Music' - Started to lose me as it went on, but still overall pretty good - 'Penguin Cafe Single' is a great opener, didn't mind 'Chartered Flight' either

You know…a cheeky 4

actually rly enjoyed this one! very interesting and i could see myself putting it on as background for writing!

Relaxing, interesting and will listen again. I have certainly listened to worse since embarking on 1001 albums journey.

weird and wonderful

Penguin Café Single - 4/5 Zopf: From the Colonies - 4/5 Zopf: In a Sydney Motel - 3.5/5 Zopf: Surface Tension - 3.5/5 Zopf: Milk - 3/5 Zopf: Coronation - 3.5/5 Zopf: Giles Farnaby's Dream - 4/5 Zopf: Pigtail - 3/5 The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn’t Matter - 4.5/5 Hugebaby - 4/5 Chartered Flight - 4/5 An interesting mostly-instrumental album that cradles between soothing sounds and wanting to break down in tears because of those sounds. I had never heard this before, but Brian Eno being a producer makes me like it. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: The Sound of Someone..., Penguin Cafe Single

ich fands überraschend gut, keine ahnung ob es pretentious ist ist ja auch egal, klassische musik aber modern und interessant mit manchen vocals zwischendurch

Some really great strings on this makes for a chill and sometimes eerie atmosphere. The more avant garde sections weren't super necessary in my opinion

this was very good some nice chill instrumentals

Pengin music :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD I'm not well-versed in the arts and culture of the South Pole, but I'm thinking this album could be my kind of unusual. Given the cafe theming of this album, I'm expecting a cool, delicate, refined early electronic album. Like the general sound of Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, which is an album I really need to go back to and give another listen. Anyways, I can't wait any longer. We're putting this on. I guess I overlooked the "orchestra" in the band name while I was making my genre prediction, huh? Anyways, YES! I LIKED IT! WOOOOOOOO. I'm clapping like a seal right now, which is probably why I've been told to leave the penguin cafe premises. This is one of those albums covers which really captures the feel of the music. Tender, refined, intimate and a little out there. What I wouldn't give to be lying in a breezy Scandinavian field while listening to this album. The music is gorgeous, especially the warmer aspects of the instrumentation. String instruments have always been my musical soft spot, and they're put to great use here. The violin guides these tracks along in a dynamic and engaging way - I'm a big fan of the free-wheeling sound. The musical embellishments on this album are good too, notably the bluesy electric guitars, plucky acoustics and the harpsichord on one the tracks, which is one of my favourite niche instruments. I quite liked the wacked-out parts too, especially the lo-fi, busy, yet minimal electronic sounds on "Milk". Admittedly, those stretches of the album do detract from the focus and general atmosphere, but they're good all the same and their presence isn't enough to bug me. Overall, yeah. Great album. This past hundred albums has revealed some real winners. I'm glad to have stuck with this project. Book time. "...one of the truly unique works of 1970s pop music." The recording process took over three years. Lifts elements from baroque, jazz, pop and avant-garde. Released through Brian Eno's label. The band's "...most adventurous - and satisfying" release. Wikipedia says this album had Eno as an executive producer and received a mediocre rating from one reviewer. This album doesn't appear to have made much of a splash, but in this album's defense that is exactly its style. Serene and undisturbed - mostly. I cosign this inclusion.

Listened to this depressed as hell walking in a forest past a castle and I feel like that was as intended

I thought classical/art music wasn't allowed on the list

Really unique, enjoyed this a lot! Love the cover too. Very fun

what is this melodyyyy

ayyyyye i loveed this >>> this now in my circular.

Nice calming album, I enjoyed more than I thought I would. 7.9/10

This was a surprise, never heard of it. Liked the bonkersness of it. Very chill, very good.

This was a fantastic album. I was familiar with their track Perpetuum Mobile but hadn’t explored much else, and I’m happy to have had this opportunity today. My favourite from this collection was Milk - it was delightfully experimental in all the good ways. I’d definitely check out more of their stuff.

Perfect for a chill day!

I love avant-garde weirdness like this.

I'm really getting into these spacey, cinematic musical experiences that pop up every so often on the OAD project. Music from the Penguin Cafe is, at turns, fun, campy, cerebral, melodic, and relaxing. It feels both foreign and familiar, comforting and anxiety-inducing. I find these contradictions engaging. Also, it was recorded very well and sounds beautiful on both my hi-fi and my headphones. I enjoyed my time with Music From The Penguin Cafe, and I plan to return to it in the future. Four stars.

This is very artsy. Definitely modern classical. A little avant-garde. Honestly, I really hard album to rate, mostly because it's so different. I don't really know how I feel about it. Actually, by the end, I've decided that it's actually a really sweet, very nice album to listen to. Definitely a little, but anything that sounds "bad" I think is done really intentionally. Oddly, I think the Zopf songs end up being the worst bit of the album. I wish there was more of the first and last three tracks. Those were really nice. Favorite Song(s): The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away And It Doesn't Matter

I just love how some dudes decided to call themselves the "Penguin Cafe Orchestra". They even make some cool music. Gonna listen again!

It was really interesting and ahead of its time. It’s unsurprising eno was involved.

I like the interesting fusion vibe it has, definitely not study music though, there is too much going on for me hehe. But I liked the album!

cool study music, might add a few tracks to my study playlist. Tunes aren't too interesting but it was nice to listen to overall

I thought the merge between classical instruments and techno was quite interesting, it was pretty cool :)

Now this was just delightful. The arrangements are great. I love the way the electric keys blend with the strings. The build and release of tension in The Sound Of Someone… is fantastic. Really great album that I never would have heard otherwise. Favorites were In A Sydney Motel, The Sound Of Someone…, and Chartered Flight.

I like the jams Will I listen to again: 69%

Cool ambiance. Qui est Zopf? J'ai bien aimé Gyles Barnaby's...

Ah j'ai quand même apprécié. Du bel instrumental relaxant. Voit-on la touche Eno?

I have found myself quite enjoying this record which was a pleasant surprise. From first glance, you’d expect a group with such a name to be dull, but you’d be sorely mistaken. While the music itself can come across as tranquil and easy, there’s an avante garde quality that I can’t help but be fascinated by. The flow of the record itself is entrancing and superbly psychedelic. I continue to press play on this record during a vast array of moments in my life, and each time I am delighted at how well it complements my day to day.

Embora pouco conhecido, este é um disco digno de ser ouvido por qualquer pessoa que se interesse por música. Temas e melodias bonitas, com arranjos e interpretações cativantes. Além de uma originalidade fora do comum.

🐧👍🏼

I alle dager. For en reise.

Really cool, didn’t think I would like it as much as I did

Very pleasant and well done

Really good. Classical, jazzy, ambient. Doesn't take itself too seriously

I actually kinda liked this album. It was pretty chill and a couple songs gave off Velvet Underground vibes

Albums like this are the reason I love this project so much. I had absolutely no clue what to expect and had never heard of the artist or album, but both the naked penguin man and the fact that Brian Eno was the producer had me feeling hopeful. This just hit right today. Slightly bizarre and utterly beautiful, I've got nothing to complain about. 4⭐️

This is a really good experimental and avant-garde album that manages to be both calming and peaceful. I love finding albums like this because I’m always on the lookout for experimental music that still feels accessible and relaxing, and this one hits the mark. If you’re looking to dip your toes into more experimental sounds, this is a great place to start.

Quirky but enjoyed

To my knowledge, I had never even heard of this ensemble, and yet the first song was completely familiar. That sort of sums up this album: it’s really obscure, traversing strange byways between classical and jazz and pop, and yet also sometimes landing on groovy melodies that sound like tv show themes.

Twaddle (complimentary).

70’s Rock ⭐️Penguin Cafe Single

Big vibes

"Orchestra" is fitting. Moments of joyous romantic music ebbed into somewhat atmospheric sustained chords, punctuated by moments of experimental (jazz-inspired?) progressions. Made for an engaging if somewhat disturbing listening experience. The gorgeous harmonies and melodies made the stranger moments all worth it and bumped it up to a 4.

this was so cute and i enjoyed myself very much

What a pleasant surprise this album was, went into it completely blind and was blown away. It is jazz electronic rock fusion that made me feel the same way I do when I hear The Vince Guaralda Trio do the Charlie Xmas music. It just feels good in a hard way to describe.

I like this album. It’s basically a 00s electronic ambient lp played on strings instruments in the 70’s.

comme au café après la course mais avec des pingouins

I liked this! Fun!

Really interesting but long

Never heard of this project before and from the first song sounds very interesting. After listening to the whole album I thought it had Eno influence and it turns out Eno is indeed the producer here which explains a lot. Interesting mix of chamber, folk, prog and other styles, definitely strong 4 stars and REVISIT worthy

i really enjoyed listening to this record just starting with the cover.. such a cute cover and the songs were also really bangers i liked the instrumental and that deep voice all throughout the songs. i’d say it carries to eerie vibes but in a very cool way some songs sounded really off putting but that’s what made it kinda cool for me! favs: zopf: in sydney motel - the sound of someone you love who’s going away and it doesn’t matter :)

Really fun orchestra stuff from these penguins, they really got it going on! 7/10

Finding out Eno was tied somehow to this album was the least surprising part of MFTPC after listening. Similarly, 'occasionally reminiscent of composers such as Philip Glass' is an understatement, with the way the instrumentation dances and intermingles in these slow, wave-like lethargies. What did surprise me during listening was how chill, laid-back, semi-experimental and ambient it was. I'm absolutely enraptured by the beachside minimalist vibes; it's almost muzak, but with that touch of raw passion and artistry that infuse the soft electric pianos and droning strings with an beautifying bent. Overall I was much more impressed by the more typical, more orchestral stylings of the non-Zopf tracks. I appreciate the more atonal experimentation there but it's a hollow core surrounded by some truly memorable and timeless pieces of classical(?) minimalist(?) jazz(?). One of the most impressive albums I've heard in the list so far from a band I've never heard of before. Fav tracks: Penguin Cafe Single, The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter, Chartered Flight, Hugebaby

Brilliant album! Experimental with lots of left turns, odd stuff happening, cool instrumentation- but without veering into becoming inaccessible. Favourite track is the opener “Penguin Cafe Single”- what a tune!

j'ai étonnement beaucoup aimé, un album relaxant et expérimental à la fois, merci pour la découverte

Very cool stuff. Reminds me of Kronos Quartet. Definitely something to listen to again.

A really gorgeous album that, a lot of the time, actually feels like a unique take on ambient during the genre's heyday. It's moody, diverse, and also pretty off-kilter at times, completely derailing from its generally serene route to give you something sort of challenging, like with the sort of directionless beeps and bloops of 'Pigtail'. But that doesn't happen very often here, from the very first son,g you know you're in for something relaxing, fresh, and very breathable. And you can (for the most part) let your guard down and let the music drive your emotions in a million different directions. Something about that almost nursery-like melody on 'Penguin Cafe Single' sounds like the opener to some Pixar movie; the song has this cutsey child-like feel to it. The best track was by far and away the gorgeous 'The Sound Of Someone...' which left me confused on whether I was happy or sad by the end of it, something about that quaint guitar melody just tugs at my heart like very few things I've heard recently. But don't get it twisted, the song's equally as comforting and lulling when those strings come in. The closer 'Chartered Light' is maybe the most ahead-of-its-time thing here, a genuinely jaw-dropping fusion of a lot of the jazzy, baroque, and ambient elements the album had been building on up to this point. In a lot of ways, I hear the sounds that would come to be associated with post-rock being developed on this album. I wouldn't compare it to one of my favorite albums of all time, but this really does put me in the same relaxed headspace as the masterpiece that is Brian Eno's 'Another Green World'. Both records transport me to a perfect world where it's always sunny, and the grass is always green, surrounded by the ones you love most forever. Great gem on this list.

i love instrumental music

I haven't heard about this group before so I was curious about this album. It's an instrumental, interesting and rather chill minimalist, avantfolk, chamber album from the mid 70s, produced by Brian Eno. It was a nice way to finish the year 2025 as the #991 album on my challenge, I liked this album quite a lot and will probably relisten again.

A beautifully merged together collection of tunes and styles. I'm not sure I've ever heard anything like it. Enjoyed with breakfast and coffee on a lazy weekend morning, which I think is suitable. Will listen again.

Feels like it’ll need some listens but defs enjoyed first run through - will go into work rotation. Some bit sounded like bridgerton versions of songs id never heard but idk if thats a bad thing? Great ebbs and flows.

I love the penguins!! I thought this was such a lovely album - the switch up at In a Sydney Motel really got me. I loved the general discordance across the record. Think it would make a great meditation piece. 4 stars!

I know some Penguin Cafe, but nothing from this album. I love it. Some parts droney, some parts full of life and rhythm. Maybe dulls a little by the end, but very enjoyable. 4 Heard before? No Owned: No: 39/154 (24%) Will I get? Yes

I had not heard of this before but I enjoyed it. Very interesting

Música para escuchar

Went in completely blind for this one. Wasn't sure what to expect. Loved it. Experimental avante garde pop, verging at times on chamber music or theatrical score. I didn't like the use of the electric piano at first (never really liked the sound of those, always sounded cheap to me), but it acts as a good counter-point to the more traditional instruments that make up most of the music. Happy to have found this one. Never would have listened to it if not for this project.

This is the type of thing I wish that there was much more of in this project. This was different, out of the box, interesting, chill and an enjoyable listen. This was a nice re-visit to the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. I have their 4-CD box set "A History" but haven't listened to it in years. This reminder will make me pull it out again for a listen.

7.5/10

This was so weird

This is one of the coolest things I've ever heard. I usually don't love "chamber" anything, but this has so much weirdness and creativity in the guitar work going along with the strings that it's got me by the balls. Second track should've been last, definitely the weakest. Will need a relisten to evaluate, could be a 5 in the future.

Didn't expect to find this album here, just like nobody expects the SPANISH INQUISITION!

Hey... That's sincerely great stuff. I found myself immersed completely in their pastoral vibe. Soothing album that brings light to the soul!

Trippy... in a good way. Perfectly weird and enjoyable Have a feeling Andrew Bird and Devotchka pulled some influence from this.

Yesh yesh yeah this is a keeper *said in goldmember voice*

Really pleasant listen. Liked it more than I thought I would. Thanks list

If I could give this negative stars I would

Kinda cute and fun

This was the first I’ve heard of this artist, but there is definitely some overlap with some of the more experimental music that I find intriguing. It caught my ear in a way that has me curious to revisit it again in the near future. I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt and bump up my rating a point to a 4. It fits the pattern of the kind of thing that will grow on me a good bit over time.

Don’t know if I’d pay to see them, but if I was drunk out of my mind in a bar and this was playing I would close my eyes and vibe

Fun! Reminds me of a joyful video game soundtrack.

What a delightful, quirky little album! I had a great time listening to it. Unconventional arrangements and instrumentation. Great to have on during thanksgiving.

I hesitated whether to choose this album, because technically it is not chamber music, but some combination of jazz, classical, and ambient music, and only at the end chamber music. Anyway, I'm very glad that I chose this particular album. The entire album is amazing, but what I truly love about it can be summed up in two compositions. Zopf is divided into several parts, so it can be characterized as the first larger and more grandiose composition here with a lot of influence. "From The Colonies" has a krautrock feel, "In a Sidney Motel" skillfully uses vocal performances to create a soothing folk atmosphere, "Surface Tension", as the name suggests, initially creates a tense atmosphere with synth manipulation, but gradually returns to that minimalistic lulling, and "Milk" then appears with experimental avant-folk. "Coronation" is perhaps the most boring part of the whole composition, but it continues beautifully on "Giles Farnaby's Dream" which adds... classical music with calypso inspiration? That's what I'm talking about! Listening, you never know how the next composition will blow your mind, but they all perfectly hit all the notes and all the feelings on any of them without becoming too ambitious for their own good. The second composition I want to touch on is "The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter". At first, it looks very, very pretentious, but it really isn't. It lives up to the name. Without giving much away, the composition is centered around one chord passage that repeats itself, lulling you to sleep, gradually being suppressed by the violin, keyboards, and other wacky instruments, creating a heavy and tense atmosphere, only to later return again, like that love that is difficult to keep on living without. Amazing musical achievement! Peaceful, yet thought-provoking. At times angry and confused, yet absolutely soothing. Recommended!

im kinda glad i've been able to listen to this masterpiece. i enjoyed it alot. 4/5

I like this. When I first looked at it, I thought it might be more esoteric 70s prog, and I wasn’t exactly champing at the bit for it. But this didn’t come across as pretentious to me. Experimental, certainly, but not pretentious. I’m not certain why it was chosen for this list, but I’m not complaining. I liked when she was liked ~MiLk~.

Felt like more modern jazz than jazz. Interesting.

I've heard Penguin Cafe Single before and I don't know from where. It's going to drive me nuts.

really good stuff. nice little ambient break in-between all the madness. and, yknow, brian eno produced it, because brian eno apparently had his fingers on every piece of music to every exist.

Well, I may not have gotten a 5 like the past 2 years, but this might be the funniest album I could've gotten on my birthday. I got Violator in 2023 and Loveless in 2024. 2025? I'm celebrating my birthday with the Penguin Cafe Orchestra! That's hilarious. But you know what? I was pleasantly surprised by this. I went in expecting some of the silliest music I've heard from any album of the whole list, but ended up getting something a lot more pleasant than that. Don't get me wrong. I probably would've been okay with something silly, but I'll gladly take this instead. It's mostly instrumental, which is quite nice. The compositions are good and varied. They're mostly soothing in a way, but leave room for some oddball moments. I think the best song here has to be "The Sound Of Someone You Love Who's Going Away And It Doesn't Matter." It's 11-minutes long and I love it. It's got everything that makes this album a good listen. The "Zopf" pieces are certainly interesting. A bit on the quirky side, which makes sense given that this is still the Penguin Cafe Orchestra we're talking about. I want to go to a penguin cafe. That sounds adorable. Anyways, this album is just nice. It's one of those albums that seems unassuming but actually hits you with something that is quite great. I enjoyed this. Light 4/5.

A mysteriously haunting album with some lovely moments. Very enjoyable.

Incroyable c’est exact ce dont j’avais besoin. J’ai eu peur quand y’a eu marqué « rock » dans Apple Music mais franchement c’était incroyable

I enjoyed it. Sonething diffetent

This feels like an opportunity for a sun drenched picnic with tiny sandwiches, clinking glasses of lemonade, a parasol tilting just so. This music lets you pretend life REALLY can be this effortlessly charming. I’ve been a fan of the Penguin Quartet for a while so this one hit a delightfully dreamy melodic spot I was yearning for but had forgot about.

Some of this was beautiful some of it was silly but overall not a bad album

Nice, soft, vibrant... but it's more like music for being in a bar or a resto.

This turned out more interesting than I thought it would be. There are moments that are great. In fact most of it was great, but sometimes the 70s guitar sounds bothered me. I’m sure everyone who listened to this reacted to the album cover. I have to say I’m not a fan. However, it sure makes this record stand out. Who would notice this album if it just had a picture of an avocado on it, like that Pearl Jam record? Even so, blech. Interesting music, dreadful album art.

Gave this a few listens and it did click in a strange way 4/5

Weird and cool

ЧуднАя музыка.

Mind blown. Now a huge fan

Very interesting and pleasant. Love how distinctive it is. I feel like I recognise a few melodies. A lovely album. I'll listen to this again.
