Reviews (page 9 of 12)

I am not sure why Supergrass flew below my radar. I was a teen into music when they were popular. Listening to them, I understand better. This is like British Green Day or pop punk Oasis. Alright is familiar but from a commercial. It's not a terrible song. There's nothing great about this album....nothing terrible either, and with this list, that's not nothing. I'm ready to abandon this album with the chipmunk voices on We're Not Supposed To. Time is the best song on the album. No it is not, Sofa (Of My Lethargy) is.

Kanye shrug

Great energy, reminds me of friends jsmmimg out

близковато к панку, но норм

Kind of sounded like a band The Killers were influenced by. Alright came on and I actually recognized that song, not sure where from though. I feel like this band should have been a lot more popular, they bring a bit more of a punk edge to indie rock music. Strange One’s was also a good song. His voice on it reminded me of Syd Barrett during the chourus.

Some cool songs here! I could probably be convinced that this is actually a 4 and I’m just being grumpy because it sounds influential to a lot of music I used to like and don’t anymore. Oops.

THirty-one years ago... I dislikes this band and album. Now... well... it's OK. Echos of Power Pop and some Glam Rock - hints of Mott The Hoople. But, one listen is enough.

This album is a bit of a polarized listen for me; sometimes the energy is fun and contagious, and other times I feel a bit annoyed by it. "Alright" is really amazing, and is so interesting to me as it's a song that was released in 1995 but sounds so much like an early 2010's indie pop track in every single facet. The vocal tone, the guitar parts, the structure, the production... you could tell me this is a Vampire Weekend song and I wouldn't question it because it fits into that time period so well. "Lose It" and "Lenny" are both really cool too, with great distorted guitars and saturated vocals, and energy for days. This album is a nice listen, but even as I finish it I still feel hot and cold on it, so with that being said I'm hitting it with a pretty middle of the road 3/5.

An energetic, loud and thoroughly english punk/pop-punk record. Sounds just like it's cover. The first three songs are just straight up roaring punk music, especially the track Mansized Rooster(my favourite from the album). Then comes the popular teenage song 'Alright' which was just really alright. Lyrically the album is just what most of the contemporary brit pop/rock albums were about, namely teenagers being wild and carefree and hating society and so on. The album never really loses its momentum, even though the songs around the middle were not much remarkable. Sofa (Of My Lethargy) was a nice ballad and felt quite different from the overall sound of the album. Definitely a fun listening experience.

Sounds like the pogues. I like it.

Fun. (26 known/54 new)

Okay album

Punky in a good way

Alright is an all time banger. The rest of the album is okay, but not memorable.

Cool, not for me. Solid tracks, nothing really clicked.

The first half of this album is a bop. It sort of falls off after that, but an eminently listenable and energetic first half. Along with a banger of a song I would NEVER have been able to pick the band of (Alright). I will be coming back.

Fun! Nice energy

Der Bänger ist super, ansonsten ist es mir zu viel

This is Britpop not sounding majorly different from Oasis. Despite not really knowing the artist or album by name, I recognized the track Alright, and would note that as the best on the album. Overall this was a good but not great album, and I would listen to it again.

I Should Coco is a lot of things thrown together. It’s very energetic punk, but at times Beatlesesque and the second half is more classic rock. One thing that carries through it all is massive amounts of energy. This made be very good, requires more listens. 7.4/10

strong start, weaker second half fun album made by people who sound like they get up to antics and shenanigans

To be reviewed later... Not bad, not great either

Har some great tracks and was a very fresh breeze at the time, but time hasn't been kund to it.

I rate alright a 3 star because I like it but its not really for me and its like country I don't really like contry. I rate caught be the fuzz a 5 star because its like matalica and it like matalica and it has good energy and I like it. I rate sofa of my lethargy a 3 star because I like it but its not really for me and its like country I don't really like contry

I like this album because the lyrics are very descriptive. I also enjoy the vibe the music brings.

I love this album because it reminds me of summer

Do you want to listen to some music that has some a lot of drums? Well in Alright Supergrass you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that Is a rock song? Well in Caught By The Fuzz you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of f recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of guitar? Well in Sofa (Of My Lethargy) you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song.

I don't like this album that much because it's too jazzy and happy. I also don't like it because I don't like how the singers voice sounds. I would not recommend this album to someone else because I don't think that they would actually like it. I would give this a solid 3 out of five stars.

i hate the abulbm cover its scary but the songs sounded cool liked them so yeah the songs sounded cool but thr cover scared mee

As britbop albums go I thought this had quite a unique sound but just didn’t really stick with me

queuing up at the chippy, telling the queen where to shove it, and wearing your best Union Jack vest to every festival

It was ok. All new to me

Overall: 6/10 I didn't expect this to feel as "punk" as it does. I like the vocals and it's a pretty fun album, the songs just don't wow me enough to give it a super high rating. I do find it impressive considering how young these guys were at the time. Fav Song: Mansize Rooster Least Fav Song: Lose It

Supergood

Just liked the one song I knew - alright - but rest sort of are like group love

Quite good rock music with a sound that feels really familiar, probably since a lot of alt-rock around this time has a similar sound. Supergrass do have their own twist that clearly shows in the album. Great tempo and some catchy songs on here. Will definitely listen to again.

I do like a bit a Britpop, but not quite a 4 for me. Have listened to this in the past, in the hope that it would be up there with Pulp, Blur, Oasis etc. not quite. Alright is one of those songs that everyone knows but couldn’t tell you who it was by it when it was released. Simpsons: No

The most solid 3 star yet.

It's a middle-of-the-road kind of album. Some parts I enjoyed, such as Alright and We're not supposed to. It's also quite cool to find out the album is Cockney rhyming slang. Then there were other bits especially towards the end, that I didn't like, which is a shame because I was getting into it

at its core it’s british punk which is not my thing at all. but strip away some fuzzy guitar and some screamy vocals and you find some damn good songs. it’s obvious that they’re having a lot of fun and tend to make the cool choices rather than the simple ones

I don't know. Kind of sounds OK, possibly even quite decent, but I just don't have much appetite for this at the moment

Like all pop singers, Gaz Coombes reminds us to never lose our heads: 'I'd like to wake up in the middle of a dream w/ you'; 'We wake up, we go out, smoke a fag / Put it out, see our friends'; 'I have a little smoke to pass the time of day.' But he's also a killer, a lover, and a 'strange one.' Unlike other Britpop acts, Supergrass returns to the punk scene of more recent memory rather than sixties rock (Beatles, Stones, Kinks). Unfortunately, they're not as convincing as they could be since Gaz doesn't have a memorable, vital voice. The best tracks here are 'Alright,' the most successful single, as well as 'Time' and 'Sofa (Of My Lethargy).' They're slower, more poignant, less frantic for the sake of fast. B/c otherwise, this bears empty calories.

Solid.

Some fun songs, I liked the last 2 especially, but you've got to be in the right mood to get down with this kind of energy, and I wasn't fully feeling it.

Ok, just doesn't really sing to me much. Kind of generic, but at least better than the terrible rock from late 90s. We're not supposed to a little on goofy side--sounds like the Chipmunks on helium.

This was pretty good. I think it runs out of steam after a bit and it eventually kinda boils into the same-ish 90’s Britpop. Not bad, not great.

I liked the song "Alright"

That's not my taste in music - But ok

Fine. Maybe keep the Cockneys out of the music business next time

terrivelmente underrated

3 - Never heard of this band or album before. Upon listening, I was jamming to some britpop punk. Great album, some bangers, and overall a fun band to groove with

Экспрессивная музыка

I like the song, Alright but the rest were kinda meh. Might be a good road trip album

bass riff from the first song sounds like the horrible histories theme like if the clash had more teenage angst the drumming stands out - unrestricted and fun

Better than I expected, but not that original / interesting. Decent catchy numbers.

Quite enjoyable, not amazing - probs marginally closer to a 3 than 2

high energy punk music with pop sensibilities that was a debut offering from Supergrass, a band that has impacted everyone from train robbers to taylor hawkins.

Not a huge amount to say, classic britpop imo, pretty fun? to listen to? Would give it a 3.5 if I could, 3 is a bit harsh perhaps Fav song: Alright

One banger (Alright), and a number of tracks on the B side that remind of White Album Beatles or something like that. A good mid-90's alt/punk/indie and makes sense that they were contemporaries of Green Day.

A bit of a one-hit wonder in my book and I should Coco.....

Never really listened to supergrass before (apart from alright which I didn’t know was them). Didn’t think I’d like this album very much from the first song but it really grew on me. Not so much the more punky, in your face songs but some of the slower, more melodic stuff is surprisingly lovely.

This is my second Supergrass album, it was decent, like the first. Mid-grade Britpop.

I don't really have any strong feelings on this one way or the other.

Recognized 2 songs which is always cool when you don’t recognize the name of the band. Felt very 90’s and wasn’t surprised that they were on the Clueless soundtrack. Good sound, good listen. Probably won’t be back but I enjoyed the ride.

middle of the road brit-pop-punk album for me. I find that this album is super cohesive, but it makes sense when you read that this is their first album.

I like the style of these guys. Lots of catchiness. “Alright” is on a ton of commercials in the UK. Loved the piano intro to “Sitting Up Straight”. It did start to drag on in the second half, but a positive experience nonetheless.

I had fun

Big surprise knowing some of these songs! Liked their sound overall, but only a few standout songs. Low 3.

One major hit that a large majority of people know, a few other good songs, and not terrible background music. That’s a three if I’ve ever heard one.

Huh... I always thought the "We are young. We are free song" was way older than this. Now I know where it came from.

Found myself enjoying this one- alt rock with a twist of pop punk. Some hits, nice instrumentation and varied tone. Overall- good album

Those first couple tracks were really great but the rest just kinda felt like I was only listening to get through the album. Favorite Track: Alright

Noisy Brit pop. Occasionally nice, but occasionally harshes my mellow. I don’t find the melodies particularly catchy here & I dislike the palette overall. Standout track is: “Time”

It was good, but did not stick with me. I listened a few time Friday and this weekend and now I can remember nothing about it.

A bit overwhelming at first. I recognized he hit. Then it got s little Beatles groovy. Vibes only… 3.2

Good songwriting and hooks, and when those might be lacking, there’s generally very solid energy coursing through these tracks. Production is very solid too. Just not enough *great* tracks here for me to consider it a true standout. 7/10

This lacked. No one so g caught my attention. Nothing was off putting either.

I liked this album. Fun and punky, the first half of the album is better than the second half but I enjoyed it, overall a good album that’s just a little bloated with too many forgettable songs. Just good enough to not be a 2 star.

we're alright 3/5

solid brit pop record

Viel schlechter als ihr sophomore Album aber trotzdem noch ganz gut

Beatles go punk is the flavor lol Personally, im really not a punk fan, but I understand why this album debuted as well as it did.

It was okay

horrible album cover, quite decent songs but nothing amazing

Overall, not something that I need to listen to again, but I did hear some things that I liked and enjoyed hearing "Alright" again, so I will upgrade from a "this is not crap" 2 stars to 3 stars. Maybe it even deserves 4, but I can't hear that...

A group of boisterous puppies formed a garage britpop band in the 90's and imitated 70's rock. A generous 3 stars. Not bad exactly, but nothing revolutionary here.

Ok, but nothing to bring me back.

way too british

Great 90s sound. 3.5 stars.

7/10 Favorite Tracks: Mansize Rooster, Alright, Time Least Favorite Tracks: Lenny, Sitting Up Straight

Heard it before. It's a fine album but once again hard to call it an essential album to listen to when they weren't even one of the major bands during the britpop era. But all that aside it's still quite ok. 3/5

It's different but good

More punky britpop, but britpop nonetheless. First handful of songs are fun, but I never liked their song Alright, it's like budget The Strokes. Kinda started blurring together... but not bad, yknow?

Alright.

I don't think I ever heard this in the 90's which is too bad because I think it's really good. Their hit song Alright is great but there are a lot of other good songs on this album too. This is an album that I will be listening to again. The whole thing is sort of an upbeat vibe which is really nice.

Alternative Rock

Could this album BE any more 90s? Alright is a great track, though the rest struggle to stand out

Ok, but I don't see what's really special about this. I thought I didn't know any of these songs but I do know "Alright". I like the singles from the 99 album better.

An interesting nugget of Britpop from the 90s. Almost a four star

J - 3.2 S - 4.3

I liked it more than I thought I would?

SMOKE A WHAT??? My Dad rock rabbit hole has transformed into an alternative rock rabbit hole which, eh, no complaints. This album was pretty good. I'd definitely heard "Alright" before listening. It was just mainly feel good vibes which I can roll with. Solid 3.

After listening to this still don’t have much of an opinion to be honest. It’s alright was a bit of an anthem at the time I recall, and still bounces along. The rest is snotty pop punk with that kinks Britishness as an undertow, it’s a fair listen but not sure I needed to hear the whole album once. And yes that is one shitty cover.

This group doesn’t sound like the 90s, and that’s distracting me. Also I didn’t recognize the name of the band, but I low key know a lot of these songs. They’re like Weezer’s hyperactive cousin.

some fun tracks on this one. alright is a classic song at this point — it’s a much better song than that one FUN. song. that being said, i don’t see this getting out in regular rotation for me.

I love caught by the fuzz but never listened to the album

Songs: Alright

I feel alright about this album

I was not prepared for the song that sounds like it was sung by the Minions. Better than I expected. 3.5 stars.

good fun

I feel like I want to like this more than I do. I found it a little irritating at the time and listening now still find it a bit irritating, especially the “Strange Ones” song. Having said that I’ve always liked “Caught by the Fuzz” and appreciate that it’s a good album even if I don’t like it much myself.

After seeing this album cover a million times it was fun to listen to. Fun indie rocky poppy album.

It's a fine album. Not really my style but a good listen

Enjoyable. Good tunes. Not really my style, just given it’s a bit dated. But overall enjoyed it

I always feel like there's a lot of "of course I always preferred Supergrass to Suede/Pulp/Blur/Oasis" revisionism around this band. "Alright" couldn't be escaped as a single, but the album was definitely regarded as a poor cousin of the big acts. Personally, always felt like they were better value as a live band.

Καποια τρακς που ξεχωριζουν. Παρα ολ αυτα βαρετο αλμπουμνκ ακομη κ καπως ενοχλητικο ανα στιγμες. Rating: C

Alright ist krass, rest recht egal

This wasn't bad it wasn't great it but it was kind of cool bc it was soooo 1990s. In a total fun way. I'm not good with all the different genres of the 90s. It sound Hardcore Lite, Post Punk Lite Pop. And for 30 some minutes alone in the store it was fun to have that 90s sound jamming loudly through the building

Weirdly I have this album on vinyl but I have no recollection of buying it! What I can’t believe is it’s nearly 30 years old! It’s aged pretty well and is as enjoyable bit of Britpop as you’ll get.

There are definitely some tunes on here but also a lot of filler

not bad .... I'd heard a different album of theirs before ... this was different.

Thoughts before listening: I believe this is the second Supergrass album I have gotten on here. While I personally like them, it feels a little questionable for them to have multiple albums on this list. Anyway, they are good alt-rock power pop that I am sure I will enjoy. Review: "Caught By the Fuzz" and "Alright" are two of my favorites from 90s alt-rock radio. Catchy pop-punk tunes that have stuck with me via playlists for 30 years now. That being said, I believe this is the first time I have heard the rest of this album. I like it fine although the hits are still the only ones that are really grabbing my attention. Pretty reminiscent of what American bands like Green Day and Weezer were doing around the same time although Supergrass certainly has a wider list of influences in the mix with a sound thats not JUST fast loud guitars (although this plenty of that on this album). This is 3-stars.

An okay album by an okay band with one single hit song that kind of makes me want to get a Kinderriegel.

Another britpop classic.

I though this album was alright. it didnt stand out that much, nor did the music. but it was good music to drown out the world and just relax. so overall its a good album.

Fuzz means police and this person was most likely caught with possession with some type of drug. overall, i don't like or hate it, but i wouldn't listen it ever again.

Do you like music that sounds heavily british? If so, then this is the album for you! I honestly think that I have mixed feelings for this album. The back ground instruments are really good, and catchy. The song alright is really catchy and I like it a lot. The song caught by the fuzz is okay, but I don't like their voices on that one. Anyways, I recommend that you listen to this album.

the instrumentals are good the lyrics are ok. seems like a good album i would recommend not for me though i also hate the album cover 4/10

A sweet throwback record that can’t help but lift your spirits. No wonder “Alright” has stuck around.

perhaps the ultimate in "Oh! It's that song!"

Sånn passe

I had heard "Alright" in a ton of movies , but I had not listened to this album. It was fun and new.

Another fun 90s entry. I'm not a huge fan of them, but there are a couple of catchy tunes on here. Far more friendly than the gibberish that this list throws at you from the 60s and 70s.

The first two songs sounded a little punk but then with Alright, I got a more retro pop vibe. Not a fan of the fuzzy tone to the recording. This album feels like a bridge between punk, pop, rock, new wave, and none of it quite works. The chorus in "Strange Ones" sounds like the theme song to a bad British cartoon, and there's a juvenile quality throughout.

This wasn't for me, but also wasn't not for me. Feel like I missed something on the first listen somehow, but can't tell if that just means it's just a little to the left of what I like but not bad, or actually just not great. Might give this one a relisten sometime to see if I shift in either direction but for now I'll just rate it middle of the road.

Favorite Track: Time

Padre, divertido. Y no sabía que aquí venía la de Alright. Temazo.

Ups and downs I could probably come around I most songs but not "we're not supposed to" but maybe that's a warning sign. "Sitting up straight" was a big stand out to me, really enjoyed the tempo changes, fun uses of dissonance into resolution pretty quickly in the chorus. Probably won't revisit but this song did get pulled out into a playlist

Pretty good. Not a massive fan of Supergrass but I did enjoy this and had a few tracks I knew and were really good.

Fairly groovy but anonymous material from the later Britpop days. It still has that subtle sheen of 80s production to it, but underneath there are some genuinely solid compositions. The track Alright sounded familiar upon a first listen, and no wonder: it's a huge hit. (So much so that I wonder if these guys are considered one-hit wonders.) Super catchy though. Whatever chord is being played under the hook lyric "I can't be sureeeeee" is a great choice to make the song more memorable, and there's a youthful energy in this track and many others that's frequently absent in the Britpop genre. I'll be honest, I don't like the vocals here. The singing is very unrefined and out-of-tune in places, and it sometimes has a scratchy/whiny quality that's very distracting once you notice it. Certain tunes, like Time (with its octave-harmonised falsetto) and She's So Loose (with a more driven, "rockier" quality) disguise the poor vocal better than others (Caught By The Fuzz). Then there's the song We're Not Supposed To, which sounds like a different band entirely. Some great grooves here. The instruments are, generally, played very well. She's So Loose, Alright, and Time are a few standout tracks in terms of backing instrumentals. 3/5 Key tracks: Alright, I'd Like To Know, Time

I thought I had never heard any super grass but that was a lie. “Alright” is frequently on rotation in my favorite Sonos stations. Glad to have heard more. Fun and upbeat. Great rhythms. Would be so fun to see live.

Not my taste. The song Alright sounded familiar and was pretty good

Love the energy and the constantly distorted guitar. The four last song are rather weak though imo, and ends the album on a low point when the energy could have been better spread out. Still damn good. Best Song: Mansize Rooster / Sitting Up Straight Worst Song: We're Not Supposed To

Youthful punk influenced energy, it's fun, fast paced and chatoic. Sometimes it's too chatoic for its own good, leaving a lot of the songs unpolished and lacking the same punch as the highs of the project. Best song: Caught By the Fuzz Worst song: We're Not Supposed To

out of the gate gives me some elvis costello meets blondie vibes.

fun but not amazing

THEY SMOKED A WHAT!?!? (ik its old british slang shutup)

Good album. Interesting music.

forgettable

Very hit or miss

Catchy, uncomplicated, happy and very well made songs with elements of ska and punk. No bad song on the album - and it's their debut! I don't believe the band intended to make Art Music with this but if they wanted to make "fun" music they have certainly succeeded. Not a super high start rating for me because it's pretty simple, just not very novel and it's not something that triggers more than one listen to me (well some songs I've hear 100 x on the radio). But really good at what it does!

Not to bad bot nothing memorable

I really enjoyed this album! It features a fuzzy blend of garage rock and Britpop, with enough tempo changes and catchy melodies to keep you engaged. Before listening to the entire record, I had already heard the song "Alright." My favorite track is "Lenny" because the rhythm section is incredibly tight. The bass and drums are perfectly intertwined in every song, providing a solid foundation for the guitars and vocals to weave in and out. At one point during this 1001 album journey, I started to worry there was something wrong with my ears or my taste in music, but I’m so glad I discovered this album! I’d rate it 3.5 out of 5.

Alright is very famous. Late punk, very pop. Nice but nothing more

I feel like Alright has been in some commercials so it reached that annoying stage and almost had me dismiss this. Glad I didn’t because enjoyed the rock energy of this 🤘

I waffled between 3 and 4 on this record... a very nice surprise after thinking I was about to listen to a lame brit-pop record but had more of a punk sound than I was expecting. Had one of those "oh I know that song!" song surprises that I always enjoy. But at the end of the day the album didn't really stick in my brain over the weekend so I am going with a 3*, but a high 3*. 3.5/5

Menevää milleniumin rokkia! 3/5

Energetic and exciting. Tinges of genre blending and progressive nature for the genre. Nothint innately special or unique about it. But definitely a good album.

Didn't wow me but was an easy listen

Favourite song - Time to go

Enjoyable, pretty straight down the line britpop of the era

Not memorable to me. Maybe a little like shoegaze? Didn’t pay close enough attention

nice enough

Most songs are better than Alright, but that still doesn't make this especially memorable. Not bad, just kinda forgettable.

Another okay album.

This one was a lot of fun and I had no idea who this artist was

A good album

pretty good, seems like their sound influenced cage the elephant.

Very free wheeling and lots of fun. Alright is a great track and the vibe is super energetic. Time to go was a great way to end the album. The title is so funny to me, maybe I should coco…

Solid addition to this list. High energy.

Listening experience started shaky, but the last 3 songs chilled out.

It’s nice easy listening. I liked 4 songs.

I'd like to know - pretty fantastic instrumentals, keyboard at the end, bass drums and guitar throughout. The thumping tempo was great. It's a shame the lyrics and vocals were underwhelming. Cauiby the Fuzz - great instrumentals again. I enjoyed the lyrics and vocals more this time around. Alright - this one was really fun. It deserves the play count on Spotify. Great instrumentals and solid albeit stylised vocals. Lenny - Couldn't stop tapping my foot to this one. Great momentum, really enjoyed it. Strange Ones - hated the vocals on this but loved the guitar solo We're Not Supposed To - unlistenable and loathsome, this will tank the review score for me Time - tediously mediocre Sofa (Of My Lethargy) - The vocals weren't bad, but I really enjoyed the instrumentals. The instrumentals reminded me a bit of a longer song off Abbey Road or All Things Must Pass with a Billy Preston keyboard feature. A really pleasant track overall. A really mixed bag. A few great tunes, average tracks throughout, and some really bad stinkers

Better than expected

Seeing another british band put me at such low expectations that I actually enjoyed some of these songs.

Kind of inexplicable that we would get two albums from this band, right? Who the hell are they? Anyway, this seems to be the better of the two, at least to me. "Alright" is very familiar to me, not sure where from though. In general, just some cool and enjoyable rock music. I think I'd nix the other Supergrass album and keep this one. Favorite tracks: Alright, Lenny, Sitting Up Tonight, Time to Go. Album art: A trio of seemingly evil (but certainly alarming) faces, especially the screamer in the middle. Not a bad cover at all, pretty memorable. 3.5/5

It only took 3 albums (this is the third) for this site to give me an album I didn't own on CD. This album is definitely one of the quintessential 'Britpop' listens, and I like how it blends contemporary (for the time) sounds with older ones, such as the 'mod' and 'garage rock' scenes of the 60s. This album definitely seems like it's reminiscing about the 60s.

knew one song from the album which was a great one. Overall fun album.

The first half of the album was just meh all round expect for Alright. Second half was better as it was more interesting to listen to. I didn't hate it but there was little about it that stood out to me as being memorable. Specific things I liked were the piano chord progression at the start of Mansize Rooster and the change in time signature and tempo in Strange Ones and. I feel like I'd probably enjoy seeing Supergrass live if they were opening for another act or I happened to stumble on them playing at a grimey pub but I'd probably try and avoid spending money on them otherwise

Good. Nothing more to say. Some tracks were forgettable, some weird samples favorite tracks: Caught by the Fuzz, Sitting Up Straight

surprisingly good

Not bad

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

Second tier Britpop. A couple of catchy hits doesn’t seem compelling enough for this list.

This takes me back to the Brit Pop, Oasis, Blur era. I spent 1995 in the UK so I probably listened to this album about 100 times, just by tuning into the radio! It's fun and happy, and it has energy you don't get in many albums. Solid 3

Just squeaked a 3

3 stars

Couple of decent bangers on here. Mostly mid to me though

Sounds a bit like what I normally listen to. Some songs I really loved, others felt a bit whatever. I was very surprised by Alright coming on. I think it's a 3/3.5 but I'm sure I'll return to at least a few of these songs!

Wel fa2

The beauty of ‘Moving’ still makes me disappointed in everything else by Supergrass, including the second half of the song, but this is fine. It’s quite abrasive so a whole album is a bit much, but there’s some good tunes.

Love Alright, but the rest was meh.

I can see why this is on the list, but honestly I prefer their later work and Gaz's solo albums because they're stoll playful but... A bit more focused/refined.

This was alright, but nothing special

not the worst britpop ive heard

interessante ma non ho ascoltato tutto, non mi va adesso

Much better than In It For The Money. Singer still sounds like Billy Corgan. Alright was the best song as represented by play count on spotify, ~350 million compared to .5-1 million for the rest of the songs. The rest of the album was still pretty good. I would put this album on again.

I Should Coco is a youthful, high-energy debut that captures the chaotic charm of mid-90s Britpop with a mischievous, punky streak. Supergrass sound like they are having the time of their lives, and that spirit bleeds into the music. The album barrels forward with speed and attitude, sometimes brilliant, sometimes a bit much, but never boring. “Alright” is the obvious standout, an anthem of carefree rebellion that somehow balances swagger with just enough self-awareness to keep it from being too sweet. It is the track where everything falls into place and still feels timeless. The rest of the album is fun in bursts, though uneven. There is plenty of noise, energy, and cheeky charm, but not every song hits the mark with the same staying power. As a debut, it works best as a snapshot of its era, capturing the mid-90s spirit in all its messy enthusiasm. Favorite Song: Alright

3.5. in some ways just another iteration of the blur/oasis brit rock explosion, but maybe a bit edgier. 12 year old me would have loved it

Jangly power pop. Not bad, not something I'd reach for though. Seems like it's another one of those UK records that the UK author decided to include on the list, but anyone anywhere else would have found something else more deserving.

It's pretty good - better than I expected. It's got some alternative/punk sound but it's fairly tight, and the energy of the songs keep things moving forward enough that you don't really notice any shortcomings. Quite catchy and melodic, even on the harder songs. Well produced too. It's surprising they didn't hit bigger. I may have liked them back in the day. Solid album. 3.7

Would definitely listen to again

Forged in the crucible of Britpop, this knockabout collection was as totemic then as it feels redundant now. What might have seemed a bit laddish - but open-hearted! - rings rather hollow. For all its apparent energy, there is something of the 'lost soul' about this album and its creators. Not as good as it was considered back in the day, but nowhere near as bad as I'd anticipated. A couple of tracks even stood out, though not the biggies ('Alright' and 'Caught By the Fuzz'). About as average as average gets.

Elevated by one hit song

Not bad 90s britpop, knew one song. Listened to on way to mt. Etna.

Probably the most quintessentially British-sounding album I've gotten so far, and it's a standout with the highs and lows of the genre. The energy and upbeat tempos keep the album engaging, but the quality from song to song isn't terribly consistent. Overall a solid listen with a few fun jams. Top tracks: Mansize Rooster, Alright, Time to Go

Not bad. Very British.

I like their energy and upbeat sound. Seems very 90s

Very OK album. 3/5

Mostly listenable Brit pop.

average Brit Pop, the hit single Alright really stands out

I had never heard of Supergrass and now I've been given two of their albums in only four days time. Either this is a better album or they're growing on me but I enjoyed this, it was a nice debut.

It was ok but pretty average. Not really my style and I didn’t love it but they’re alright. LOVED she’s so lose. Very good song

Quite nice

Mediocre.

Other than alright had never heard any of these before. More punk sounding than I expected but unremarkable for me.

More rocky than I remember and really well produced. Not particularly iconic though.

Love the energy. But that’s it really

Decent album. I liked the instrumentals more than the vocals, but the vocals worked. There's probably a few songs I'd want to hear again. 3/5

I Should (go) Coco (for Cocoa Puffs)

I do remember a few of these songs and it was a fun listen!

Lo más britpop que he escuchado

I don't think this is a particularly stand-out album. The single is great, but there's not much more there.

It’s kind of a power-pop-punk amalgam. It’s not bad, but I doubt I’ll ever make the choice to listen to it again.

Middle

я не понял

It got better towards the end.

This was a little bit better than some of the other 90s rock albums I've gotten for this project so far, but still mostly flavourless. Except for a couple of tracks, nothing really stuck out for me. I don't know what it is about 90s rock; why it all bleeds together for me. I will say though that I enjoyed it a little more because of the vocalist, and some of the songs had interesting structures. All in all, I wouldn't consciously seek out to listen to this album, but I wouldn't complain if someone put it on... It's not bad music; just doesn't really suit my tastes. 3.5 stars

1.5 stars are solely for 'Alright'. That song is several steps ahead of the rest of the album, which itself isn't bad, just pretty forgettable.

Interesting listen, not too shabby.

This was fun. I heard the one hit, Alright, but the rest was new to me. Fun and playful. Some blues rock bits towards the end (Time). Didn't make my jaw drop and wonder where has this been all my life, but I wouldn't turn it off it I was on a long drive.

Some nice high energy songs with plenty of variety. Nothing really stuck out though.

I was a little bit disappointed. The well-known tracks were a cut above the rest of the album. It wasn't bad, but equally not good enough to make me want to re-listen. I reckon 3 stars is about right.

Another one totally off my radar. I must've been busy in the nineties. Album certainly was…I should possibly maybe listen to more from these guys.

This was a weird album for me. I enjoyed the pace of it but I'm not sure I loved the overall sound? I think on repeat listens I could grow to really love it or dislike it. Fav songs: - Alright - I'd Like to Know - Caught by the Fuzz - Lenny

3.5 Fine early 90s alt-rock. A couple fun songs.

I have seen this album many times, but never gave it a listen. I like it more than I expected, really like the first couple heavier songs. It gets a little long/repetitive towards the end, but overall it’s definitely a good one.

Fun stuff - never heard this one. Had no idea the song “alright” was supergrass. Thought it was a 70s song.

Really enjoyed the first few tracks, but it fell off and the second side didn’t capture me the same way.

Solid album, classic Brit pop at its finest, away from the distraction of are you Blur/Oasis. 6/10.

I've heard Alright before. That's the only song I recognize so far. The album is pretty good though. It's more up my alley than most albums I've gotten lately.

Have never heard of, nor heard this band's music prior to 1001... Music was pleasant to listen to but I cannot determine why their review indicates they were so groundbreaking. Pretty "meh" to me....nothing special to set them apart from the myriad of other bands that sound like them. 3/5

The first half is really good pop-punk, high energy and entertaining. The second half is unfortunately much more boring sweet pop. The first half would have been a 4 or more, but the second half? meh.

Promedio, está bien.

Not bad

britpop slander

Solid album 3 stars. Recognized we were young song

Brit pop rock album? Sound was okay, but I wasn’t the biggest fan. Had heard the song Alright before. I do think that the songs I liked were quite good, but the rest I could leave. There was one song that was made a higher pitch so it sounded like kids. Thought it was gonna be annoying but ended up being alright. Ending was cute Standouts: Caught By the Fuzz, Alright, She’s So Loose, and Sofa Of My Lethargy.

Alright’s alright. The rest, meh.

This feels like the british smash mouth. A little rougher, a little more expiramental. But I didn't latch onto much in this album.

only heard a few songs. Is fine.

It's fun and fine!

I've never heard of this band but this album is actually pretty good. I don't love BritPop but this was better than the usual. It's fun when they sing "bruvah" innit. Upbeat and jammy all the way through. Simple formula but it works for them, good for 1995.

Wasn't as good as I'd imagined but nothing wrong

Unexpected little treat. Liked the variety in the songs.

I'm realizing I just really can't stand British people for a prolonged period of time. Solid tracks but wears after a while.

Fun alt-rock/Britpop

The album is buoyed by the fun and excitement of youth, but also veers into too frenetic. Overall, the songwriting falls short of their contemporaries.

First thoughts- this album is a little all over the place. I wasn’t a huge fan the first time around, but I feel like I would like it more with each additional listen. Giving it a 3, but it has potential to be a 4 with more listens.

Supergrass - I Should CoCo (1995) 3.75/5 I’ve never heard this so I watched the video for “Alright” first. I guess they’re kinda goofy and have a Kinks kind of thing going on? This is the kind of thing I really would not have cared for when it came out in 1995. Quick Google scan lets me know this album is “BritPop” and it’s their first album. I’d Like To Know - is a high energy alternative rocker, with nasally vocals. Then they add some parts at the end to make it climax. Caught By The Fuzz - Also a high energy alt rocker. Telling a story. Mansized Rooster - This one is a stomper. It has the high backing vocals that remind me of Cheap Trick, and more and more White Stripes garage energy seeping through. Alright - Is a slightly different style. More of a Ray Davies/Kinks story telling pop, piano driven. With a guitar solo. If you listen long enough, it starts to feel catchy, but it feels annoying before that. Lose It - This one feels like a more serious rocker. Grunge/Garage style with vocal harmonies. Previous songs have these harmonies and are starting to feel like a big part of the personality of this band. Lenny - Some of these songs bring to mind Mudhoney. The garage rock aspect. This song is pretty good. I think it was released as a single. Strange Ones - Bluesy White Stripe type rocking. Then the really distinctive vocals that happen on all these songs. This song is pretty good then takes a turn for the worse when the goofy vocals kick in, but they end up getting back to good rocking again. Sitting Up Straight - Another high energy song with really quick singing. ANd a Rembrandts type chorus. Theme from Friends. I guess these guys were pretty young when this album was recorded and it really is high energy. She’s So Loose - This one is a different style. We’re Not Supposed to - A novelty song? Where the vocals go fast? Time - This one reminds me a bit of Cheap Trick. Sofa - Experimental late Beatles vibes… Time To Go - Feels like yet another style and it’s getting weary but the song is over in two minutes and so is the album. This is a high energy alt rock (Brit Pop?) with quirkiness? Almost like Jack White but more goofy. I’m surprised I like this album more than I thought I would. I’ll listen to it again.

Oh that's the song that's in like every movie from the late 90s and early 00s. Otherwise it's not bad.

Surprisingly good

I just like the song Alright

Some really fun stuff here and a lot that sort of just is. I’m also tired of this vocal type. Feels like every third or fourth British band I listen to has this exact vocal style.

I hear parts from Beatles, Pink Floyd (Hammond organ and guitar), Buddy Holly, and more in here. Interesting to see how it distills down. Fine to listen to, a few tracks stand out: Alright, Not Supposed To, Sofa

It was alright

there's too much britpop on this list--but to be fair, this isn't your typical britpop. supergrass includes mostly punk to their music, and alternative too--and the song "time" has a country feel. this may sound weird but i'm reminded of the band fun., who wasn't anywhere close to britpop but the artistic flair seems similar. 3.5, though i'm tempted to jump to a 4 because i wasn't expecting to enjoy this.

I found myself thinking "man, this isn't half bad for yet another Britpop album". Funny enough, I was thinking that same thing just a few albums ago for Manic Street Preachers, and it turns out they're somewhat similar bands, sound-wise and era-wise. I guess the key for me is to take Britpop and mash it up with hard rock and/or punk rock.

(Spoiler alert: Vassar Clements does not appear in this film). I complained in a previous review about Blur’s pathetic effort to make a power pop album in 1995. On the other hand, these guys set out to do exactly that, and succeed mightily. These are punchy, catchy tunes, delivered with just a little bit of snot. Fun, if ultimately inconsequential. Have to say I hated this cover. Gives the impression of one of those portraits where the eyes follow you.

This grew on me. Enough that I gave it a 2nd listen. Solid 3+ Welcome after 2 dud albums in a row.

I have never heard of this band before, and they were a pleasant punk-ish surprise.

Super fun album really liked it. Definitely some bangers in there. Favorite song was either Lenny or She’s so Loose. Added to my Spotify library.

Fun 90s rock. Alright is a classic. Found myself enjoying Lenny the most. Not a life changing album but will listen again.

Did not listen

Fun album. Honestly didn't get to listen as closely as I wanted so a re-listen is in order. But I enjoyed the high energy throughout.

Favourite tracks: alright; lose it

A low-stakes, fun, adolescent pop punk offering with some decent melodies and a goofy tone. The album started pretty fast-paced and punky, sounding rather generically Brit-pop with some notably good drum fills and bass work, but softens over the album to include nice keys and acoustic parts. Sort of base-line good, not spectacular or ground-breaking, but certainly not inoffensive. Stand out tracks include "Alright", "Sitting Up Straight", "We're Not Supposed To", "Time", and "Time To Go".

Best Song: Sitting Up Straight. I like this kind of sharp, burst of a song. Exactly as long as it needs to be. Worst Song: Sofa (Of My Lethargy). Not altogether "bad", but this music excelled in its brevity and so I don't think this album needed a random prog diversion in its final moments. Overall: Quintessentially medium music.

songs all seem kind of similar on a first listen. not amazing, not terrible.

Amusant et léger
