Very cool. Timeless. Unique but accessible.
What a great album. THis is what I was looking for in this list: a great artist I haven't heard of. Amazing singing amazing music. I think I got a little bored by the end, but man. The Architect is a JAM!
Between the artists name sounding fairly similar to a certain parish council worker and one of my favourite tracks on here simply being titles ‘The Architect’, I certainly felt like some cosmic entity was out there taking the piss out of my preferences for brain rot type humor. This felt like a more folk-inspired spin on a more entrancing electronic album such as The Avalanches, especially with how each track leads in and out of one another dynamically. I’m always a fan of that. Just a really well put together bit of psychedelic electronica, not bad for an album which needed to be linked to the artists wikipedia page (since I’m assuming no such page exists for the album itself)
Can I name a single song i love on this album? No Can I remember a single track? No How many times did I listen to this? 4 Did I enjoy this album? Absolutely It puts me in a trance from which I cant escape. It also introduced me to Jane Weaver and I've gone on to listen to Flock which I enjoy a good bit more. Its also got one of the best album radios I've ever heard so that's a plus. 7/10
This album was a pleasant surprise. I'd never heard of Jane Weaver before, but I liked the sound. I ended up marking two songs as favorites: "Slow Motion" and "I Wish". For me this is kind of a high-3 / low-4.
Not sure why this is on the list, but in a pleasant and surprising turn of events, I actually like it quite a bit. Sometimes reminding me of a more uptempo Air and at other times of PJ Harvey. Good stuff, all around!
What a pleasant surprise, to encounter an artist I've never heard and - gasp - enjoy it.
Gostei do álbum. Vocais são ótimos e a mistura de instrumentos com arranjos eletrônicos é bem interessante. Celest Phoenixcall.
Reminded me of stereolab
I’ve never heard of her before, but this was very appealing. Easy to listen to.
This worked shockingly well for me. Delightfully hypnotic with the repeating drums and droning synths or guitars or whatever it's got going on and her vocals are quite otherworldly. Felt almost like the Minecraft soundtrack.
Very cool
A pleasant surprise here. Some interesting pop/folkyish music.
Dang, this was a pleasant surprise. Her voice is gorgeous and fits the music perfectly. You go Jane Weaver!
This was a nice listen. Started and ended strongly, I thought it got a little slow in the middle, but enjoyable throughout.
Ukjent for meg, men dette var jo strålande bra.
I think this one could be a 5/5 after a few more listens. Really interesting.
This is a unique, bizarre, compelling record. I had never heard of it, or the artist, before listening. Glad it's on the 1001.
Really enjoyed this. Was not familiar with this artist. I will listen to this again. Layered and mesmerizing.
# Album Name: Modern Kosmology # Artist: Jane Weaver # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Very enjoyable album. The vocals are pretty sweet. The use of the electronics and strings gives this album a very chilled vibe. Good listen with several good tracks. This was a nice little surprise. Reminded me of artists like goldfrapp. # Top Tunes: HAK / butterflies / Modern Kos / Slow motion / valley / I wish # Would I listen to it again? Yes
and so this last hundred ends 3 for 3 with shit ive never heard of in my life ghjsdg. this is awsom tho, prob my fave of them as long as im arbitrarily grouping them together. calls on a lot of traditions (art pop, neopsych, space rock, krautrock) but honestly i dont think ive ever heard something at quite this intersection or with quite this effect...honestly it doesnt feel overly indebted to the past at all, it feels very naturally and earnestly created...kind of timeless. and just absurdly great songs front to back imo,,,and many different Sound Itches being scratched from blips to bubbles to hazes and anything else u can get out of a synth arpeggio. lovely work!!
This was actually pretty cool, I enjoy s the rock but liked the snythiness of it as well! I hadn't heard of this lady but I enjoyed it!
Interesting find
New to me artist. I'll check out her other stuff.
i’m surprised that i’ve never heard of this woman before because this whole record feels very much in keeping with the zeitgeist of 2016-2018 alternative pop/rock. i liked it a lot but none of the individual songs jumped out at me…i probably would appreciate her more in a playlist among various other artists.
that was really good
Not heard this album before, like their more recent stuff, but this was also a really enjoyable listen, will definitely be seeking a physical copy, probably a 4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I enjoyed this quite a bit, nice soundscapes and good singing.
Not heard of her yet she’s been around for years. Runs her own label. Maybe that was her mistake? Sadly half the battle is marketing and publicity. Surprised by how good this is.
yeah i would have really been into this one about 5 years ago. i really loved the sonic landscape that was built here, a lot of great neo-psychedelic textures that sound great. jane's voice is really pretty and the songs here, at points, have some really compelling melodies that i really enjoyed. unfortunately, for me, there was not enough greatness here (as opposed to goodness) to get it over the hump to a 5. still, a strong 4, and an enjoyable listen.
I am not sure what significance this album has that landed it in this list, but I would have probably never heard of it otherwise and it’s quite good, so thanks list.
22/03/25 I have never heard of her and it wasn't too bad!
Wow, didn't know anything about this or her. Love most of it!

This is a dreamy electronic pop album that feels reminiscent of a time a few years before its release. It reminds me of 2014 Tumblr and "grunge make up tutorials" that I used to watch in YouTube during my first year of uni. It reminds me of Channel 4 original dramas, which isn't a bad thing. I enjoyed this album. It was soft, melodic and subtle but has moments of great crescendo's that elevate the pacing. The vocals are quiet and understated for the most part and compliment the sweet instrumentals. It's a reflective, thoughtful record that is great for letting your mind drift. Not quite Sunday morning music but maybe Saturday evening with no plans music. The electronic feel gives it that modern charm but however it can tend to make some songs sound repetitive. It's not exactly an album that changed my life but I could see myself listening to it again.
Pretty cool.
Enjoyed more than I was expecting. It was dreamlike and trippy, but still felt like something I could bob my head to.
po curti demais esse
vocais oníricos, sintetizador bacana, indie pop pica demais, até levemente psicodélico né. nada de inovador mas td é feito bem demais. slow motion é uma pedrada ce eh doido
Jane Weaver is a British singer/songwriter that has recorded in a range of styles during her career. Modern Kosmology is her eighth solo album, and an exploration of dreamy, ethereal "folktronica." Weaver's talent as a songwriter is evident throughout her career. In this release, her melodic, electronic pop songs showcase her strong, rich voice.
Oooh somebody new that I know nothing about! This is a really cool album opener, reminds me a bit of Radiohead meets Dan Deacon in terms of some progressive, energetic production thats a bit atmospheric, a bit off-the-wall. Indie meets electronica, that’s what this is! “Loops in the Secret Society” was a really cool listen, she has such a clear idea about how to build up a song and be additive at just the right times. Another highlight was the little bleepy synth refrain in the next song “The Architect.” But my song of the album award absolutely goes to “The Lightning Back” for its infectious, quaint indietronica perfection. I hear lots of The Postal Service in this one, which is about the highest compliment I can give a song. Whirling, nasaly synths that are easy on the ears, a bit-crushed beat meant to induce a little head-nodding. Airy singing about a lovers impact on the singer. Beautiful stuff, so good that it got a replay out of me before I could finish the album! Another shoutout to the cool vocal intro and outro on “Ravenspoint” that helped elevate the tension a bit. This album is a great deviation from the manly rock&roll or grand concept albums. Sometimes all you need is some easy, well-made indietronica to get you through the day
I've never heard of Jane Weaver or this album before, but I tend to enjoy electronic music from this era, so I have high hopes that I'll enjoy Modern Kosmology. Here's hoping that this can hold a candle to Chvrches! I didn't love Modern Kosmology as much as I love Chvrches (an almost impossible standard to hold an album to), but I thought this was really good, and I enjoyed listening to it. Jane Weaver has a solid voice, and she clearly knows how to build some good electronic arrangements. The thing that I enjoyed the most about this album was its overall vibe and mood. This album was really chill and pleasant to listen to, and then "Architect" hit, which completely mixed things up in the best way possible. I loved the main riff of "Architect," and the pulsating, high-pitched sounds on the chorus added so much to the overall sound. The high energy of this song came out of nowhere, but I loved it, and I thought the album was better from that point through the end. I wasn't blown away by this album, but its overall sound is good enough that I wouldn't mind listening to it again. It's unique, and Jane Weaver has some great vocal chops. The biggest detractor for me on this album is that the first half is pretty weak; I prefer my electronic music to rely more on catchy hooks and riffs, and Modern Kosmology didn't really make much use of that until about the halfway point.
Nice album, quite soothing sound, but not too drowsy. Pleasant record to listen to, just positive vibes. I have never heard of Jane Weaver before, and probably will quickly forget about her, but she is a pretty good singer and songwriter.
This is cool, especially the instrumentation. The use of synths feels distinctive without being distracting. Altogether it is a well-composed, coherent album. That said, it doesn’t really move me, but it’s highly competent.
'Following charts but the threads would just dissipate / Modern Kosmology let my love resonate.' This album, mainly due to its excellent production, tho also b/c of lyrical moments like that, is an unexpected pleasure. Tho not quite as brilliant as comparable acts such as Julia Holter and Cate Le Bon, this possesses a palpable optimism that I very much enjoy: 'Let's go outside when it doesn't feel right.' It also successfully sustains a Byrd-like psychedelia on tracks like 'Loops in the Secret Society.' She loses me a bit on 'The Architect,' which is neither sonically nor conceptually attained, but wins me back with sweetness on 'The Lightning Back' and 'Valley.' Are the echoey vocals and abstract lyrics entirely irreproachable? No. I can surely do w/o the 'open your eyes' at the end of 'Ravenspoint,' for instance. But I don't want to do w/o: 'there's a rhythm to march to this undisputed mood.'
Really sunny this album, great electro pop and then heard more music by her that was also very good.
Loved the vibe. Dreamy, psychedelic, easy listen
Enjoyed this. Time will tell if it is really worthy of a place on this list.
Folktronica. Who knew? The 1001 list enlightens yet again. Liked this one a lot. Just mellow and weird and a bit mystic, (perhaps new ageish?) Will definitely explore more Kosmic Weaver! (4.2*s)
I'm not sure why this album was so hard for me to rate; I kept going back and re-listening to it. I enjoyed it a lot, both while paying attention and simply as background music. It works really well at both. It's a good mix of luscious atmospheric sounds with a folky vibe on top, I was surprised to see it came out in 2017. This might be the most recent album on the list but I'm struggling a bit with the significance. That is not to say it isn't worthy, it's a very good album, I'm just searching for what it does that makes it noteworthy. 3.65 for fuzz pedals.
I had never heard of Jane Weaver, but this ticks many boxes for me. Excited to listen to more of her.
7tje die ik naar boven afrond.
Slow Motion // Loops In The Secret Society // The Architect // The Lightning Back // Valley //
Solid indie vibes worthy of listening again.
I enjoy this. Sound similar to the Canadian indie I listened to in the early 2010s.
Never heard of her before & I absolutely loved this. Brilliant discovery, thank you List.
One of those albums you can play in the background at home, that’s super chill vibes, but won’t put you to sleep. Great beats, ethereal voice, and calming music. Great album! Listen again:yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: Did you see the butterflies
Favourite tracks: modern cosmology; I wish; loops in the secret society; h>a>k
Was unfamiliar but completely entranced. Nice textures and ambient feel. Will return to this.
This was kind of cool. I think the krautrock influences are so strong as to make it sound pretty derivative, but it was still perfectly enjoyable.
Verrassend goed album, love motorik en die ritmes enzo. Enige dat het geen 5 maakt is dat haar stem soms echt tegenviel en randje vals was
This album is impressive. Lots of cool soundscapes and some really interesting concepts within the songs. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-modern-kosmology-by?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Fun and different, ethereal and love the vocals
Cool and chill and groovy and highly intriguing. Stereolabesque would be the readiest comp. This isn artist who has a clear idea of what she wants to do and then goes on and does it, effectively, vibesily and in most interesting fashion. One can cite any individual standout cuts, but the whole thing works. Harkens back to Fairport and Pentagle and has vaguely proggy vibes at times, but JW's approach seems more controlled and direct. She's on part with Feist, one would say, and much more to one's tastes than St. Vincent of Weyes Blood. It seems that she's continued to produce interesting music and should be better known.
Woooooooow! How come no one told me about Jane Weaver. This was absolutely fantastic. So lush and unique.
Enjoyable and tough to categorize
I really liked this! It got a little weaker at the end though. A true 4.5
Very cool
Took some listening, but it ended up better, mostly, than it started. Certainly much better than Konnichiwa.
First listen. Good.
This is a very cool album - never heard of her!
Pretty good 👍
Not sure how it’s French Indie if she’s British but sure, I’d have pegged it as more electronica with all the funky synths and instrumentals, but what do I know. Found the intros gripping and the instrumentals really interesting with the mix of rhythms and instruments being played. Enjoyed this album a lot, there was so much going on, but it wasn’t overpowering or annoying as I sometims experiences with synthy music.
At first brush I mostly thought "oh this is pretty Stereolab-like, cool" but then all of a sudden it wasn't, bursting into a more psychedelic haze of more synths, more vocal harmonies, more strings. Good stuff!
modrrnia avaruusoopperaa.. avara ääni... avara luonto... nyt menee kaikki fl studio garage bändin elektroniset työkalut oikeaan osoitteeseen sillä tämä kuulostaa muutamaa vakkari 2010-luvun kusipoppi anthemia lukuunottamatta todella hyvältä. bug noises bug sound. silmätkiinni laulanta mutta ei nyt haittaa hirveesti tällä kertaa, kuulostaa tarpeeksi mallikkaalta. ei mitään napakymppejä mutta jokainen aspekti on hyväksyttäväö antakaapas yhdet raikuvat...annetaan yhdet raikuvat modern kosmology
Great. Bleak in all the right ways Low 4 baby
Actually pretty excellent
óvænt. taktvisst raftónlistar bít, minnir aðeins á flauelið og hraðbrautina. mjög fínt og áheyrilegt, aðra umferð.
This was a good album, a bit dreamy, a bit upbeat a bit psychedelic…I’m only giving it a 4 as nothing quite caught me enough to save, and I can’t remember any of the tracks
A really great discovery for me , love IT
Dreamy soindscapes
really enjoyed this. going straight into the rotation
I never understood what made music "progressive". But this felt like it. My ears were pleasantly tickled. Good work Jane
This was cool. Big time Stereolab vibes.
Hé wat geinig. Het zit ergens tussen singer-songwriter-muziek en triphop. Heel relaxed.
Loved this, new to me, going to find more.
Interesting
This one caught me by surprise. Really feels like some early 00's indie in the vein of Goldfrapp mixed with Florence and the Machine. Soft, dreamy and an easy listen.
All up my alley but new to me. Ethereal introspective lyrics, naturalistic samples and drones over rhythmic guitar. Heck yeah.
I liked this quite a bit. 3.5 stars.
Did not know this artist before and was actually blown away by how much I enjoyed the vibe and album.
really cool, loses a little bit of steam in the second half
Musically this album has got Krautrock vibes. The vocals are airy dreamy style. I didn't know what to expect here, but this is really good. 5/24/2024
interesting choice for an album i should hear before i die, especially when the selection from the 2010s is so limited. but that said, i did like this quite a bit
Not sure it it’s a 4 or 5? It’s really good either way. 9/10
4/30/24. Wasn't familiar with Jane Weaver before this album, and I wasn't expecting an electronica/folk type sound. This is the type of record I would draw from for my own sound and songwriting, and really appreciate how each song brings something unique to the table. I always like artists who aren't afraid to push the limits.
Reminds me of a combination of St. Vincent and Black Moth Super Rainbow.
This one blindsided me, I came into it with no knowledge of what to expect, certainly not this kosmische inspired sound. It’s kind of like Beth Orton fronting Broadcast, really really good stuff. I will have to check out more.
interesting, dreamy, chill sound. Overall enjoyed it, but may not listen to much again.
I’ve already got the title track off this saved to a playlist, but never heard anything else by her. So far this is really good. Almost feels like she made it by herself in her basement. Like, her voice almost sounds like it’s in the room with you. Despite the layers of music and filters and samples, she feels unvarnished somehow. Hard to describe. But this is actually really good. Not too heavy handed, not a lot of posing. A real toe tapper. Very nicely engineered, good balance. There are elements on this record that are clearly inspired by a lot of other artists on this list. This is an excellent distillation of the past into something new. Enjoying every song, no skips. Almost like Velvet Underground meets Goldfrappe. Very nice surprise. Really enjoyed this.
Almost a 5 🤏
Never heard of Jane Weaver before. This record is excellent. Her voice is reminiscent of Mitski in places. Favourite tracks: H>A>K, Modern Kosmology, Slow Motion, The Architect, Ravenspoint.
I leapt out of my seat upon seeing an album that wasn't released before my great-grandparents were born. Nice vibes, overall enjoyable. Favourites: slow motion, loops in the secret society, the lightning back, I wish. 4/5
Really chill album. I like her voice, loved the instrumentals, great vibes. Unrelated to the rating but the album art is excellent as well. The melodies are really well done, and H>A>K did a good job drawing me into the album and setting the tone. I wasn't a huge fan of the more psychedelic elements of some of the songs such as Ravenpoint, but overall still a terrific album. 4/5, could've been 5 with more of the poppy elements (just because I don't like the psychedelic parts). Favourites: Did you See Butterflies?, Slow Motion, H>A>K, The Lightning Back.
Finally we get something that was released after the year 2000. Was just some chill vibey stuff with some cool electronic instrumentals, which were what I liked most about the album. Although I enjoyed it, I find it hard to understand why this album is on the list - I had never heard of this artist (60,000 listeners on Spotify), and there are plenty of new albums that are far more influential and unique sounding. Nevertheless, I really liked Slow Motion, The Architect, and I Wish, and will give this my third 4 in a row
relaxing and a good vibe had by all
Modern Cosmology is a very versatile album worth exploring. From the first to the last note. I only knew The Architect and really liked that song when it came out, but never explored the rest of Jane Weaver's discography for some reason. I'm glad I did. There's so many influences on this album, from 80's disco, to Velvet Underground, Gary Numan or OMD. And Jane weaves (heh-heh) it all as one whole.
Revisit
Very interesting. The acoustic guitar and her voice are incredible. Though, this is definitely a chill day album.
Brit synth folk. It worked for me. Obviously this is woman fronted so it got panned on here - but I found it completely listenable.
Track no1 strong Track 2 beautiful I'm listening more and more Just a fucking quality record. Absolutely
Me encanta cuando un disco me sorprende. Y este lo ha hecho.
It started off really good and then slowly got worse but barely. 4.5/5
did you see butterflies? slow motion loops in the secret society the lightning back i wish
This list doesn’t have a ton of representation for 21st century music. There is a good amount from the 2000’s, but when talking about 2010 and further, the number of albums decreases significantly. This is easily the newest album I’ve listened to so far. But this album truly feels like an anomaly to me. I’m not sure where the author of the book could have found something like this. This artist doesn’t have a large number of monthly listeners. This album is relatively unknown. It doesn’t have a hit on it. It doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. All of that adds up to what I would call a diamond in the rough. I respect anybody that is capable of putting an album together entirely by themselves. And this sound took a bit of time to grow on me initially. She really honed in on being very entrancing and meditative. This is one of the most hypnotic dream pop records I’ve ever heard. At first I thought that this choice caused a lot of repetition, and made for a lot of songs that never had much of a climax or big moment. But eventually I found comfort in just letting things play out and seeing what ways she experimented with her own sounds. Plus she has a solid singing voice, and she harmonizes and layers it with so many textures and chord progressions to create a really massive sound record. I love albums that totally fill my head with noise, and especially those that are able to do so even when I’m listening to it with a pair of cheap Apple earbuds. The best way I can describe this album is a tour through a botanical garden. But one that is made up entirely of digital art and computer programming. This might be the single least known record on this list. But often music like this that goes under appreciated is where the real gems lie. Rating: 7/10
Ethereal, dreamy, ominous
4/5
4.0
This was a really solid album and one of those that reminds me to not always judge an album by the cover. I saw the album artwork for this one pop up and the album year/name and figured it wouldn't be something I would like. Not sure why, just looks a little Starbucks counter to me. But from the first song I was pretty impressed. Didn't fully fall in love with it but enjoyed the music. I'd never heard of Jane Weaver before but was really impressed with this album and her musical vibe. I'll check out some of her other albums and see if they're my thing. Standout Tracks: H>A>K, Modern Kosmology, Slow Motion, Loops in the Secret Society, Valley, I Wish
1. 3.5 2. 4.2 3. 4.1 4. 3.7 5. 3.8 6. 4 7. 3.8 8. 4.2 9. 4.4 10. 4
Mola! Cuesta pillarle pero luego coges el gustillo
sometimes i hear stuff on this list that’s new to me and it just seems like garbage but sometimes i hear stuff that’s new to me that’s really cool
Never heard of her, but sound pretty cool
Did not expect to like this one but for the most part I did.
Hey, released in 2017 nice to see you. I sometimes wonder which version of the book this list is operating from when I hear a record and can't find a single redeeming quality about it. I then think, How has this album survived? Why hasn't a revision or new edition of this book pushed it out in favor of something new? We only have 1001 slots to fit records into that I must hear before I die. I don't know anything about Jane Weaver but I already feel positively towards the album. Let's have a listen. Holy Smokes, this is up my alley or at least down one of my streets in the neighborhood of my tastes to twist up the metaphor. At the very minimum it integrates genres that I have an affinity for. So, why is it not in my orbit already? How different is Modern Kosmology from the rest of her output? Have I not heard of her because she is some obscure British State Secret? The answer is likely more mundane; my guess would be that I have been out of the loop on this kind of music during her most productive years. This record came out during peak metal. Obviously, this is not metal. It's some psych, indie electronica and a little bit of folk with a pop gloss. Lyrically interesting and well performed. I'm into it.
Quite a trip. Atmospheric and airy.
A pleasant surprise, I'll definetily listen again.
I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. Although, as a 2017 album, I wonder how this is different from folktronika albums that have come before
Ny trevlig bekantskap. En finfin fyra blir det. Finns potential att bli en femma med lite fler lyssningar.
Wow, I had no expectations here and this is seriously good, would listen again and check out some of her other work.
Loved this!
This was a lot sweeter than I was expecting, pleasantly surprised. Worth listening to for sure.
I like Jane. Never heard of her until now but she’s cool. This music is vibey and ethereal but with an edge to it. I’m digging it.
Vibe of the album seems to match the name. Could dream away in this album whenever I want
Nice vibe. Cool explosive drums with the singing drifting over hauntingly.
Acoustic, psychedelic, folkalternative, rockelectronica.
Very cool indie pop
Yep, another album where I add nearly every song to my liked songs on Spotify, despite the various reviews stating it is simply too mediocre for the listener. I guess I like a lot of music. /shrug/
great find!
There were some really good songs on this like Loops . . . and the Architect. As has become my norm, I’ll give 4 to recent albums that have some good stuff.
In a quick flipthrough of the book, one can find a certain critic, Chris Bryans, that champions a lot of British artists I never heard of before starting this challenge. Yesterday’s Wild Beasts. Today’s Jane Weaver. Since there are barely any albums post-2010 in the book, I’d say he’s part of the reason those selections feel refreshingly unconventional. Beyoncé. Taylor Swift. And HOOKWORMS Enter Modern Kosmology: the reason why I went down the Chris Bryans rabbit hole. Very little about this- the vocals, the synths, the guitars- suggests it was recorded in 2017; rather, it sounds like an alternate-dimension 1972. What’s more, it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia article 🤯 Yet despite (or in spite of) all that, this album is a gem. It’s serene but danceable, dated yet futuristic. It ends on the same synth bass where it begins, meaning it’s an almost perfect loop. (It fades at the end) Thanks for the rec, Chris HL: title track, “The Lightning Back”, “Valley”, “Ravenspoint”, “The Architect” November 9, 2023
Somewhere between Hawkwind, Joanna Newsom and Charli XCX there is this wonderfully odd album, which is pleasingly unlike much else I have heard before. A glorious surprise of an album.
Absolutely ethereal, loved this genre and the mood it created
kinda weird, kinda fun. didn't love it but it was enjoyable to listen to, i'd def listen again if im in the right mood
First time I listen to this artist and I really enjoyed this album. Great find and what I was hoping to get out this list.
This is the type of record that makes this whole 1001 exercise worth doing. Never heard of Jane Weaver before, but I really liked this record. A mix of throwback folkie with contemporary synth pop. Was this recorded in 1968, 1984, 2017?
New to me. I liked it enough that I want to check out more of her stuff.
Acoustic, psychedelic, folkalternative, rockelectronica.
lovely. clearly a pet pick by the author but for good reason. will relisten
Smooth, pretty, dancable, great all around
This is cool, kinda like Stereolab with more chugging krautrock influences, kinda reminds me of School of Seven Bells or a much more rocking Broadcast as well. Ends right as I was starting to think it was going a little bit over long. Solid.
I really liked this album!
An album I’ve never heard of that I dug!
After reading other people's reviews, I was VERY surprised that I liked this album-not really my style of music. Trancy, electronic, melodic, dreamy...none of the things that I usually like in my music, but this works. It was a welcome change of pace for me, and I fuck with it.
4/5. An airy album, with a slight dystopian undertone, with lyrics alternating between ethereal and optimistic to dark and heavy. Her voice feels more like an instrument, flowing and distorting with the backing instrumentation. There is some bangers on this and some very nice songs to listen to as well, but overall an experience, like a story being told about a lost civilization. Don't think that's what it is about but it feels like it.
New one to me. Nice!
This found its footing as it went on. I really loved the transition into Lightning Back. Also appreciated the concept of electronic folk. 3.5 but I’ll round up.
I didn't like this at first but it grew on me. Still feels like there are a ton of artists out there that have a similar sound. Not quite sure why this one was picked out. I still enjoyed it quite a bit and will check out more from her.
This was a revelation to me- how have I not heard of her?! This sounds like a 00's St Etienne which to me is a good thing. I like the electronic accompaniment and her voice is suitably melodic. A good find. I like this.
Acoustic, psychedelic, folkalternative, rockelectronica.
Finalmente uma novidade para mim que funcionou muito bem, o vocal agradável conduz a sequência folk, indie psicodélica sem afetação.
An album from the past decade that I've actually listened to before! And I still like it. Very post-Goldfrapp with a touch of Kate Bush.
Genieten
nice neopsych vibes, kinda björk-ish, really liked it front to back. it felt a lot longer than it actually was. jane has a great voice, the production feels ethereal. solid 8/10, unironically enjoyed it just as much as yesterday's sheer heart attack, maybe even a bit more...
Cool sounds here.
Electrónica
Pretty cool. Didn't blow me away. Can't help but think that 2017 came with some more influential albums than this though.
first listen really really cool
better n better after each listen favs - did you see butterflies? - modern kosmology - the lightning back - ravenspoint - i wish
It’s not earth shattering but I have a feeling this might be quite a grower with time for a few more listens Edit - I was right! I find myself returning to this a lot do bumping it up to a 4
Lovely album although as an album of the modern era, it's a tad longer than it should be - but Side A is a stellar showing of great track after great track. Production and arrangement is wonderful, and I was left wondering how I hadn't heard of her before.
Really enjoyable
Nice. I was skeptical based on ... I don't know... the cover art, the album title, and just a general skeptical nature when it comes to the unknown. But I really enjoyed this. Jane Weaver seems a lovely blend of Poe and Imogen Heap. It'll take me a few more listens to glom onto the songs and dive deep, but I'm inclined to do that based on this first listen. Whatever was going on with the guitarist on a few of these tracks was an unfortunate foray into stupidity, but apart from that, this was bangin'.
This is the first I've ever heard—or even heard of—Jane Weaver. I'm now officially a fan. This is definitely my bag. The drones. The vocals. The bubbly synths. It's like Stereolab meets St. Vincent with some psychedelic folk overtones. I love it. It's getting 4 stars based on one listen, but it also led me to her other albums, which I also enjoyed. Huzzah. Does it belong on this list? Well, I'd rather hear this than the Dead or hearing an 8th dinosaur rock group, so... on that level, yes. On the "is this something so interesting/groundbreaking/influential that i need this in my life" level, no. But whatever.
whoa and wow...who is this ethereal beauty, appearing like perfect sunshine dappled through the lovely pines? I love everything about this album and this sound. I'm going out to explore more.
Really good
Really nice and surprising album. Loved the psychedelic synth. Teetered between three and four (started to lose me in the middle but got me back with “The Architect”). Landing on a four because it was memorable and unique.
What a pleasant surprise! H>A>K and The Architect are awesome. The whole thing is pretty good. Not my style but I still enjoyed it a lot. (Prior listen)
I love Jane Weaver but this does seem like an odd choice for albums to hear before you die. It's fairly niche and not even her best work, in my opinion. Flock is the superior album by a mile. Still, it was a nice surprise to get this suggestion as I hadn't previously heard this album.
- Super funky sounds and synths - Perfect ambient soundtrack - Vocals sound great and fit the songs very well - Favorite songs: Modern Kosmology, The Lightning Back, I Wish
Cool sound and a couple of very nice songs, but a few slightly odd ones. 3.5/5 rounded up
Despite their very long list of previous members I was surprised to find Jane Weaver has never been in stereolab. What I did find is that she's pretty much the same age as me and lives just down the road. That aside, this is a curious album that's definitely worthy of a few more listens before I turn to dust. First impressions are good. Ambient-Electro-folk and it sounds pretty neat. Also just noticed that the pretty pattern on the front says "Jane Weaver Modern Kosmology", which is also pretty neat. Last track 'I wish' is fab.
What music can be.
Nenavadno, da je tako nov album in tako neznana avtorica na tem seznamu, a vseeno mi je bil všeč. Mogoče si bom zavrtela še kakšnega ali vsaj še kakšno pesem ali dve z drugih njenih albumov.
Really torn on my rating for this one. I liked it, it was kind of a kaleidoscope of sounds and influences from the 2000's and 2010's. I heard a lot of touches of Wilco, TV on the Radio, Beach House, and even older influences like Kraftwerk and Can. But I was stumped by the seeming lack of cultural impact - there is no wikipedia page for the album, I can't find a broad ranges of reviews, and can't find it on lists of best albums of the year. How did it end up in the 1001 albums to hear before you die?
Surprisingly good. Very 90ish with a lot of electronica woven into the folk carpet. Enjoyed it a lot.
Not bad
Rock psicodélico ambiental. Está curioso. Un 4.
Acoustic, psychedelic, folkalternative, rockelectronica.
Whoa, cool new discovery. And guest vocals by Malcolm Mooney! Need to look more into Jane Weaver...
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: H>A>K, Loops in the secret society, The architect
Good
This surprised me! I had never heard of this artist. I didn't know what to expect. Fully dug every track!
I don't know why, but this album really grabbed me. Maybe electronica but with better vocals? First three songs (H>A>K, Did You See the Butterflies, title track) and The Architect were good examples of this and great overall. Then sometimes it was like a bit of 60's throwback folk but with a modern twist (Loops in the Secret Society, Valley). All in all, the album was funky and cool; I dug the varying sounds and her voice.
I first got into Jane Weaver’s music through her Loops in the Secret Society album which is a kind of a reworking of songs from this and her Silver Globe album with some added music. The electro-folk sound appealed to me so I checked out a few more of her albums. This album really connected with me. It’s kind of an otherworldly album, slightly hippie-ish and optimistic all at the same time. Favorite tracks: “Did You See Butterflies” “Slow Motion”, “The Architect”, and “I Wish.”
Heel erg verrast van dit album. Net dromerig genoeg, maar niet op een manier dat het saai wordt.
I have never heard of her before, but I was surprised I never have because this is in my wheelhouse. I thought it was great and probably something that I will give five stars with more listens
Iik, mikä ihana tämä on. En tunne artistia entuudestaan, mutta tykkään tosi tosi paljon. Nostalgista retrohaikeutta, ihan meitsin juttuja.
This was a well crafted pop album, really enjoyed it. Creative with a great pace start to finish. 4 stars
An interesting album. I've always been quite impressed by this brand of avant garde pop, its always so dense and intricately put together it boggles my mind how much skill and care these artists have. And this is no exception, Jane Weaver has had a varied career and by this point has obviously learned exactly how to achieve the sounds she wants. Always changing and holding your attention, Modern Kosmology didn't seem to have a standout track for me but in the best way possible, because the quality is so high throughout. This is one ill come back to definitely.
Love discovering more modern albums that flew under my radar off this list. This LP is an inviting, enclosed psych-synth adventure from start to finish and one that I found myself perfectly okay with playing again once its initial run had finished. The instrumentation maintains a cohesive feel throughout while giving each song its own distinct personality, and the song structures remain diverse enough to sustain interest (plus create a perfect loop on the final track, a touch I always find immensely satisfying). The vox stay smooth and inviting throughout without being distracting, and at times sound near sympatico with a Melody's Echo Chamber project. A bit of editing could have elevated this one a bit as things do tend to feel a bit long by the end, but for what it's worth this was a great discovery all-in-all. I get the debate here around whether this LP 'truly' deserves to be on this list, but I think it's worth considering A) the musical canon of the past 10-15 years is still an open topic of debate and B) we don't need to include every single Beatles/Stones/old white dude rock album from the 60s-80s on here at the expense of newer LPs and that it's okay to live a little with something a touch different :)
Was a good listen. I enjoyed it.
I liked it!
"Modern Kosmology" is the ninth album release by English singer, songwriter and guitarist Jane Weaver, who was part of the Britpop band Kill Laura. Her music is classified as acoustic, pyschedelic folk, alternative rock and electronica. Yes, quite a mix and so is this album. The closest comps I hear are "Embrionic" era Flaning Lips, Sterolab and then just straight forward pop-rock. I enjoyed this album quite a bit. A positive tone with abstract lyrics using imagery to nature, the cosmos and geometry to what appears to be relationships or just a general state. The album begins with "H>A>K" and a helicopter sound which goes into more rock. It sounds like a pyschdelic, spaced-out version of "Ace of Spades." Birds singing begins "Dud You See Butterflies." A driving rhythm section, keyboards and layered vocals create a Stereolab-esque mood and tone. Abstract lyrics. "Modern Kosmology" is where I really heard The Flaming Lips. Keyboards. Weird noises. Pyschedelic. See the world and cosmos and change it. A droning keyboard and organ intro begins "The Architect" which then kicks in with a dance beat. Now I hear the Afghan Whigs. A driving urgency carries this song which was my favorite on the album. He's the architect of repetitive relationship behavior. "We fight, we fall." A spoken word dialogue from a man starts "Ravenspoint." The lyric "We are on our way to dust" keeps getting repeated. Backed by an organ and pyschedelic electric guitar, the mood is sort of creepy in a good way. Strings end the song fading out. Well, this was an interesting and enjoyable listen. Not really a dull moment. When you are compared to The Flaming Lips, The Afghan Whigs, nd Sterolab that's a very good thing in my world. Recommended, especially for anyone who likes those bands.
Love this. Jane's crystal vocals work so well against the cosmic psych rock background
First time I was introduced to Jane Weaver, started so-so but “Did you see butterflies?” was meh but picked it up with “Modern Kosmology”
This was pretty interesting. I liked it, and it reminded me of Cate Le Bon just a little. 3.5/5
Lush vocals, wish I had hear of this artist before, great energy. Retro but not too retro indie synth pop.
Really enjoyable synth-driven pop. Slow Motion is a favorite.
I expected to not like it, but it was more enjoyable than I thought. The esoteric stuff is a bit annoying, but besides that it is kind of progressive and has interesting parts.
There's some fun modern electronic bleep bloops. Not always my jam, but awesome when in the right mood and I like the way this was done. || Unfortunate that there's not more info on Wiki about the specifics of this album and it's more about the artist.
Love being able to hear the nooks and cranny of pop music. I have never heard of Jane Weaver before but I'm glad to have been introduced to her and by extension, this album. I definitely feel like this one will grow on me in time, but I see it as a great album to have on in the background. Top song pick upon first listen is The Architect; synths slowly build for over 30-seconds before launching into a dirty bass synth and drum groove, really dug it!
This was a groovy album. I liked the 80s vibes mixed with like arcade fire or something. Really kicked it up a notch with the architect and the lightning back
This was very enjoyable. Felt very much like Stereolab, which fits my tastes very well. Bit of Aldous Harding in there too. Must try a bit more folktronica.
Cool. Not perfect. 4 is a little high but it gains points for being cool.
Some britpop I actually kinda liked- big surprise.
Never heard of her, or this, but I quite liked it!
Enjoyed this.
Great artist! Love the mix of instruments and electronic sounds. Beautiful voice!
Fun indie feel to it, almost like Metric vibes- would listen to again! Plan to check out other stuff by this artist
This album sounds like it could be a grower. It’s a bit of folktronica with moments of 70s singer/songwriter thrown in. This reminds me a lot of later Radiohead in some of the sounds in the beats. Overall, I really enjoyed this album and found it very accessible. Jane Weaver is clearly influenced by the sounds of the 90s in northern England but brings a folk sensibility that tempers the electronic side of things to end up with a well balanced and thoughtful mix.
Love the femme-y, electronica-y, gentle vibes. Loved it even more when my friend told me she was a Manc folk singer! Bumped this album up from a 3 to 4 stars. Yay for musical exploration executed well.
Feels an odd choice for this list but excellent album, right up my street.
A really nice album. Like her stuff generally but hadn't heard this before for some reason. Silver globe and Amber are really great. Lots of gentle motorik beats all over this.
Wow! Que agradable sorpresa! Muy buen disco, no había escuchado a Jane, pero definitivamente este disco va en esta lista. Me pareció como una mezcla entre PJ Harvey y St Vincent. Muy recomendable
Ethereal. I've never really heard anything labeled "folktronica" before, but I enjoyed the vibe. Very peaceful. Feels like some fae creature singing to you in the middle of a clearing in the forest. Favorite tracks: "Modern Kosmology", "The Architect", "Valley"
big massive attack / st. vincent vibes. got an immediate re-listen from me
Swag… lyssnar aldrig åter… men de va swag fr… fr…
I am a sucker for this vocal style.
Reminiscent of Embryonic and The Terror era Flaming Lips. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: The Architect Date listened: 02/05/22
Very chill
I'd never heard of Jane Weaver before this album, but I'll certainly remember her name now. It was pretty good! I'm certainly glad I listened to it. I think it might drag on a little bit towards the end, but overall, very solid album.
Rock psicodélico ambiental. Está curioso. Un 4.
7/10
8/10. Chilled out and really pretty sounding.
Like pretty much anyone on the reviews, I've never heard of her or this record and was pleasantly surprised.
Beetje vaag maar ook lekker. Sommige nummers doen me aan Ladytron denken. Mijn favorieten zijn "Slow Motion" en "Architect" ****
Subtly complex and verging very close to five star territory.
Unusual but I liked it
One of the more enjoyable and cohesive albums I've ever listened to. The opening track wasn't all that great to me, but the rest of the album was good-to-great. The dreamy vocals mixed with the mostly electronic instrumentals created a unique atmosphere that is a joy to experience. Very reminiscent of indie rock mixed with bedroom pop mixed with electronic. So, so good. The transitions were also so much fun. Aside from a few, Weaver's transition from track-to-track was nearly perfect, and really helped to tie everything together. Aside from a few very small nitpicks, I greatly enjoyed just about everything this album has to offer.
Never heard of Jane Weaver before but really liked this as background bar music.
A lovely album by an artist I had not come across. The music was intelligent and intriguing at the same time. Will certainly be listening to more of this artist
Bravo madame
je suis à fleur de peau je mets des bonnes notes tous les jours
Very fun album and nice to discover good, new music! First few tracks are the best
modern electronica.
Very listenable. Nice use of electronics.
I loved both the music behind the vocals and the ethereal vocals. I definitely want to check more of her work out. You can definitely tell that she's a visual artist as well (or an all-around artist) because of her unique putting together of the pieces.
Great album!
I had never heard this before and really liked the first time around.
loved this album. can't believe that I had never heard of her before. definitely will keep listening.
Not my normal genre but an awful lot to like here.
Decent, maybe a little too ephemeral for me at times. Like it was very close to a music style I love, but not quite there.
Holy hell! Täysin tuntematon artisti mulle mutta tää kyl iski aika lujaa. Tosi kaunista ja nyanssirikasta. Pienillä jutuilla suuri merkitys. Meneviä biisejä olematta yhtään rankkoja tai liian poppiksia. Jatkoon jatkoon jatkoon!
I don't know why but this music spoke to me :D
El mejor disco que me ha sugerido esta página hasta el momento. A punto he estado de darle cinco estrellas. Tiene canciones realmente cósmicas.
If the songwriting on here is just "pretty good" on average, it's the production that really elevates it to something special. Combining 2010s indie pop with psychedilia and driving programmed beats was the correct move, and it's engineered so effin' well.
Pretty good experimental rock
Angenehm, interessanter Gesang
Kinda like that The Mammas and Pappas meets purity ring
Pretty good if you like that sort of thing (which I do)
Sour Krautrock. Someone's been listening to Stereolab. Never judge a book by its cover? Well, you can judge this album by its name. Avant garde but not avant harde to listen to. Best Tracks: H>A>K; Did You See Butterflies?; Loops in the Secret Society
Sometimes an aesthetic just grabs you from word go. God knows I know not what this magical combination or way of combining things is, but damn this has it in spades. It lives not in the land of the olfactory, but I can smell it. I can smell it.
Very surprised by this album -- didn't know what to expect. At first I was a little disinterested, but as I listened more I found lots to like. It grooves like Tame Impala with psychedelic influences. The vocals and overall vibe remind me of Charlotte Gainsbourg. It's not an everyday listen for me, but I'll add it to my library. Neat.
Never heard of her before, but very good, chill vibes
Bastante agradable. Es como un Stereolab pero folike.
Really cool, I think i knew her already but never listened to the album in full. Nice discovery, i'll add it to my rotation list, plus from spotify it spawned a lot of nice related suggestions
Having never heard of this album or artist I was pleasantly surprised. Huge Broadcast vibes throughout.
This is a nice find. The kind of stuff I used to listen to all the time. I’d probably make the effort to go see her live if playing locally.
Very much enjoyed going album beautiful mood, gorgeous voice, warm lush instrumentation very inviting perfect for dark late night listening 4 🌟
Weird but quite liked it.
I admit, I had never heard of Jane Weaver until now. I've never really been into electronica or ambient dream-pop, so for my first listen I didn't care for it. I took a second (more focused) listen (late in the evening) and it paid off. The use of synths and other sounds has a trance-like quality that envelopes you with music full of depth and atmosphere. I didn't think I'd like it, but I'm pleased this album was suggested. I recommend it!
Not the status of a 1001 album generator album but, just another one of a massive amount of good albums that are released every year. I did not know this album, but some songs such as Slow Motion (the synths) and Loops in the Secret Society (the guitar) sounded very familiar to me. Clearly, Loops in the Secret Society is Velvet Underground. These songs and also the final two started to grow a bit on me. Vocals are OK too. I would buy this record and give it a 4 but I would never put it in a 1001 list!
Had never heard of this artist before, but quite liked it. Dreamy synth pop that reminded me of Stereolab.
Pleasantly surprised by this one. Obviously a very much underground pick, and maybe not worthy of its status of one of the 1000 best albums of all time, but still very enjoyable with a good varied sound.
A bit samey but very enjoyable
Glorious dreamy synth-pop. Hints of Goldfrapp and a lil bit of Hot Chip in there too - can't believe I hadn't discovered Jane Weaver before. I'm excited to listen to her other stuff. I'll defo be playing this album again too.
I was very skeptical of this. I think very few albums from the last 5 years will have enough context to meet the criteria of the list. I have to say I loved this album. Great psych folky stuff going on here
I thought this was terrific. Bit of Charlotte Gainsbourgh, but of Velvet Underground bit of psychedelia.
I'd never heard of Jane Weaver before this album, but I'll certainly remember her name now. It was pretty good! I'm certainly glad I listened to it. I think it might drag on a little bit towards the end, but overall, very solid album.
no idea who this is, but it was pleasant. 4/5
Great electronic album.
Is this a synthwave album? this might be a synthwave album. Hell yea. Though its not like some cheeseball synth emulation, there is actually a really well crafted sonic vision on this one. The Architect slaps. Ravenspoint is weird.
I enjoyed this, seems interesting and unique. Surprised it is so new. How objectively can we look at something 4 years old in the context of the last half century of music?
It's got motorik beats and synths all over it. Of course I like it. Even got Malcolm Mooney on "Ravenspoint"! Love the balance of instruments and electronics. I'm a sucker for female voices paired with electronic music.
English, 10s, Alternative/Electronic Rock + Charming, Fairy, Atmosphere, Complexed = Female, Electro, Alike - Maybe boring {3/10} [4/5]
Needs multiple listens but it's great.
Work music Good synth
bien con buenos cascos.
Never heard of her before but this was pretty good
Nice album. Weaver is a pleasant enough singer, and the instrumentation is really easy to listen to. This is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me... Since today is a holiday, 4 stars it must be!
Texture and quality, heavy and interesting, not sure how much of a fixture it could be
Bought this on a whim when it was released. I liked it so much, I bought the next release.
What a pleasant surprise! H>A>K and The Architect are awesome. The whole thing is pretty good. Not my style but I still enjoyed it a lot.
Moderne Velvet Underground, heel tof!
Never heard this before. But would listen again
