Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Well, this is kinda a mess, but also not completely without charm! Psychedelia, but occasional dips into heaviness. I can almost, but not quite, stretch to a 4. 3.5, if that were a thing.... Fave track - "¡Que Vida!" has quite a fruity melody that threatens to become an earworm...
Good band, bad songs.
An interesting first side with some exotic colour added via flute and harpsichord but it's let down by the indulgent jam taking up the whole of side two. A wasted opportunity.
Hippy nonsense
I like Love's sounds they are a lot more raw than other acts of the time and their big hits are fantastic. Nothing in this album particularly moved me though. I can only assume Forever Changes is somewhere else in the list of greatest albums? And the one with Just Be Thankful For What You Got on it?
Another solid album fits right in with what I expected of Love
A couple of good singles. This should have been an EP. Best track: Seven and Seven Is
well, it's certainly a choice to have six short songs on the first side, then the second side have one nineteen minute song. arthur lee and jethro tull have something in common. this was an interesting album. i could hear similarities with other artists from the mid-sixties. "relevation" sounded like the rolling stones crafted it. "stephanie knows who" is a little too harsh for me, but the harpsichord presence is of its time. "she comes in colors" could have been a beatles track. a big treat for me with this album was "7 and 7 is." as a huge alice cooper fan, i recognized the song immediately from his special forces album (a deep cut). i do enjoy comparing covers in my spare time, too.
Very first song reminded me a little of the Doors. Thought this was an interesting album. A mixture of "kind of" punk and psychedelic to a little rock. I can't say I loved, but I did enjoy listening. Favorite song was Revelation. A good 3 for me
3 For a 60s band named "Love", this album went pretty hard. Musically it was a little all over the place - it bounced pretty abruptly from psychedelia to surf rock to finally an 18-minute blues closer. The punk in me really enjoyed Seven and Seven Is, and I see how it could have influenced punk in the years ahead (The Ramones even covered it at one point). Other than that, nothing in particular seemed to jump out, and I don't really think the closing track was quite interesting enough to justify its length. Favorite songs: Stephanie Knows Who, Seven and Seven Is
3.5 to be fair, I hadn't listened to this one before. A couple of good songs but not my favorite.
It was aight.
It grooves and it swings and the first few cuts have a slightly exotic feel, but then vibes its way into a sorta generic ‘60s energy. Glad to know it (if only for the epic “Revelation”) but one won’t be playing it at one's funeral.
ikkje lika fra som forever changes
OK, wasn't a fan at the start but middle of the album really grew on me. Harmonica let it down a bit. but glad I listened.
Strangely pleasant - i was surprised as dont really like the 60s style as a general rule
Decent album. The Rolling Stones song “She’s a Rainbow” sounds a lot like “She Comes in Colors.” This predates the Stones’ song.
Very summery and psychedelic, and very very dated. Daft lyrics, clichéd music, but fun and enjoyable in spite of that.
Before Forever Changes, the band Love were rocking out pretty well. For the time, this is pretty good, but I can't say the 19 minute long Revelation was worth the length. Favorites: "Stephanie Knows Who", "Orange Skies", "Seven and Seven Is"
It was good, the last track was a bit out there and long, but the first 6 tracks were great.
Well forever changes is like a boarderline classic but this I don’t know what to expect… The album opens with Stephanie knows who a rather fast paced rocker ( well for love) with some sorta off key sounding instrumentation. Other than the screaming nothing matches to forever changes though. Following is the rater mellow orange skies the song is closer to what they would make forever changes it’s a nice slow song with drugged up lyrics and amazing flute work in particular. !Que vida¡ again goes in this direction I love the guitars in this one still not matching those. Seven and seven is, is what I would say is love’s heaviest song amazing drums and amazing bass work not what I expected from this band. Love goes full on folk at the start of the castle being a bumbling Simon and Garfunkel like song at the start but slowly loses all of this with the second half being a unique spiralling instrumental piece. Ending the first side of the album is she comes in colours, it’s no red telephone, but it’s still a nice rock song with off lyrics and great flute work ( which seems abandoned in forever changes). Side two of the album is only one song revelation a nearly 19 minute long thing it starts off as a pretty formulaic rocker then is filled with so many other layers at points completely warping the song as a whole, vocal work is good slightly echoey and doesn’t fill up the song all too much for a song of this length. The bit where it’s like he’s having sex is rather awkward for the listener. But eh I really don’t like it but it’s unique. It’s half proto forever changes and half a mess not dreadful or forgettable though.
Decent disco but nothing special for me
Of moderate interest musically, but lyrically pretty silly. “Stephanie Knows” is overstuffed and not representative of what’s to come, most immediately, the dreamy “Orange Skies.” “She Comes in Colors” is a Stones rip-off, no? The most interesting song, the epic, slow-jam closer “Revelation” suggests the darkness of the ‘70s to come, with some guitaring that sounds like Neil Young was sitting in and a soprano sax (or clarinet) solo for the ages. Those bits are way better than the extended vocal improv bit in the middle of the 20 minutes, and the strange transition ending – drum solo into harpsichord nod-off.
Pretty good rock/pychadelic that I haven't heard of, but not going to make my rotation.
this was a fun listen, nothing that really stood out to me though
Not as good as forever changes. Some nice pop psychedelic stuff and the 20 minutes song on the second half was fun, but lacking in great song writing.
I enjoyed having this album on in the background while doing busywork because it just kept me moving. So interesting that the final song was so expansive! I feel like you never really see that these days, so props for a unique album format.
Pros: - Very cool sound! It's my first time actively hearing this band. They are very dynamic and the overall sound does a lot of things right. - Even though it's 1966, the production is really crisp. - It's a dynamic album while also existing inside of a defined sound. Track 1 is a "tough" psychedelic rock song with a harpsichord shred part. Track 2 is a gushy ballad, Track 3 is another sweetheart track, and then Track 4 is a "The Who" type rabble-rousing shout-off. That's a lot of moving around. Cons: - Some tracks' lyrics are not exactly bad but a little uninspired. - I'm assuming it's a victim of the time period, but man I can't comfortably listen to hard-panned instruments and layers for very long. Track 3, "Que Vida", has the FULL drumset 100% in the left ear, and guitars in the right ear. I'm personally a big believer in symmetry in production and while panning is a great condiment to add to your flavors, you can't have things sound balanced with 70% mustard in your right ear and 30% ketchup in the left ear. Don't put condiments in your ears. Misc: - Interesting that the total length of the album is 36 minutes 9 seconds, and the final track is over half of that, coming in at 18 minutes and 58 seconds. This track is mostly a jam though, as the vocals leave around the 3 minute mark and only come back briefly before leaving again.
They're alright.
"Seven and Seven is" and "She Comes in Colors" are very good tracks and made me into a fan.
not immediately grabbing me
Look, their next one is MUCH better.
Pompy pomposity. Quite fun actually.
Meh.
Never heard this album before, but it was pretty decent. Not as good as "Forever Changes", but still good. I love this album cover, by the way.
Some good songs on this one, but as a whole it didn't grab me and pull me in like I thought it would. A fine document of some late 60's psych-pop-rock and it gets kind of jammy to conclude the record. Nice touch.
Great 60’s album.
With all the legendary bands from this era, it’s hard for an album like this to stand out. It was really disorganized and the track Revelation really gets annoying. I respect the musicianship and use of the harpsichord however.
Typical 60s with some psychodelic pop edge. Not bad but in the end the album is just going to be one of hundreds that are not bad but listening to them once is enough
Hectic then mellow, then hectic, then cool, but always mono.
Very 1966
Very interesting.
This is the second album from Love that was recommended to me by 1,001 albums generator. I almost forgot about the previous album. On "Da Capo" I can still hear a notably late-60s characteristic to the music with prominant psychodelic sounds. This album seems to venture into progressive rock a little more that the last record I listened to. For example, "Revelation", which was the track I enjoyed the most, is 18 minutes long and takes up the entire B side of the album. The progressive sound is not just a matter of length. The shorter tracks on the album also experiment with progressive rock layers and transitions. My enjoyment of the music was periodically interrupted by some of the delivery of the lyrics, and sometimes the content of the lyrics. I'm not a big fan of songs whose themes revolve around "ooo, baby" or "hey, mama". I have a soft spot for the occasional odd lyrics, but after hearing "Oop-ip-ip, oop-ip-ip, yeah" a couple of times I was feeling a little confused about whether I liked "7 and 7 is" or not. For the moment, I'll say that I like the track. After a first listen, this album is 3 stars, but there might be room to grow with a re-listen.
Rock suave de los 60-70's. No lo conocía. Fácil y agradable de escuchar. Grandes partes instrumentales
De muziek komt wat rommelig over. Verder wel aardig voor op de achtergrond. Zang voelt soms wat onzuiver. Andere liedjes zijn weer verrassend goed. Favorieten zijn "Que Vida!" en "She Comes In Colors" ***
Better than the last 60's rock group that we just saw. I figured we would have heard all the rock groups by now with the amount of unknown bands we are getting but there's always more. Creepy man in the middle, looks like a morlock or the giant from Equinox.
As if to test my statement about getting bored with '60s psych rock, the list claps back. This one is much more lively and interesting than the Blue Cheer album though. Lots of cool instruments at play; a bit folksy in spots. It closes with a super long jam song, which was actually one of my favorites. I like this one though, good stuff. Favorite tracks: Orange Skies, She Comes in Colors, Revelation. Album art: Framing is a bit goofy, but I like this one overall. The band photo is menacing, reminds me of Night Gallery. With enough makeup and blue paint, the guy in the middle could have acted as one of the Morlocks in the Time Machine. I want to befriend these bruisers. 3.5/5
Un disc de contrastos. Els temes més melòdics, 'She Comes in Colors', 'The Castle', 'Orange Skies'... són del millro que va composar mai la banda, la resta està a un nivell alt també, tot i que mai he estat fan del single '7 and 7 Is'...
Like his voice First track wild It's good Many styles Like it
Kinda middle of the road, not anything I'd listen to again but not bad. 3.5
Took me a few tracks to settle into this guys voice. 7 and 7 is cool. Kind of sounds like a Jim Morrison impression. I like this genre.
Nice melodies and musicianship with solid recording quality for it’s time. Nothing overly compelling beyond the last song though to keep my interest. Some protopunk and folk vibes. Revelation, Orange Skies.
She Comes In Colors is amazing. The rest is nothing special but still enjoyable.
The rythm can be great and sometimes really anoying. I have mixed feelings with this album even if the energy and intentions are always there.
sort of a punky kind of Doorsy kind of thing? Very hard to describe. That doesn't mean it's bad... but doesn't necessarily mean it's good. There were a few good songs on here, but also a few stinkers. And it's tough when there's only 9 songs on the album and one of them is almost 20 minutes long.
Overall, an ok album. Not minding some of the harpsichord trilling and flute arrangements. A very folksy album epitomised by the 19 min jam session Revelation, with its spoken word lyrics, guitar, harmonica, and drum solos it's what one would expect. When it got to the sax solo, started to hurt my ears. :/ Best: 7 and 7 Is; She Comes in Colours Worst: "¡Que Vida!"
Some indulgent bits but I liked the bits that inspired those jingle jangle Glasgow bands many years later.
3.3 - Confusing. Vocally, It sounds like an album better suited for Jim Morrison. Unlike on “Forever Changes”, here Lee’s voice sounds strained and guttural. Lyrically, it’s stereotypically psychedelic. I like the jazz exploration on “Revelation” though it’s 19 minutes of a 36 minute album. And is that Chewbacca grunting in the middle of the track??? “She Comes in Colors” is pretty. I love the incorporation of the jazz flute.
3/5 - Meh. Not my style.
Don't know the album. Hear one other by Love on this "Albums to listen to before you die" series. I do like the sound of this one. "7 and 7 is" is a nice pre-pre-punk sound. I can see why other punk bands have recorded it. Not bad. Revelation almost gives me a "Doors"/"Jim Morrison" feel. Interesting because this came out before anyone ever heard of the Doors. Stand outs: Orange Skies, Que Vida! The Castle, She Comes in Colors. This is a 3/5 for me. Which is a "good rating" for an album I hear for the first time. I can see this one growing on me and just getting stronger. I smell a 4/5 in its future.
This was interesting. Side one had some nice moments, but overall I didn't love it. Side two was more interesting to me, with shades of the Doors, Iron Butterfly, and even the Byrds. Overall I'm glad I listened to it, definitely an early example of the experimental sixties, but probably wouldn't listen again. 3 stars.
Pretty progressive for the 60s. Pleasant but not really my thing.
There are some interesting songs here, but it didn't feel like a cohesive work to me. There is some lovely guitar work and the little baroque touches were fun. I didn't find Lee's vocals particularly compelling, which seemed flat against some of those more flowery arrangements. He does best on "Seven and Seven Is" and “Revelation,” which interestingly are less sing-y than they are talky/shouty. I thought I would hate “Revelation,” but it’s not bad. They lose me a little when the squonky sax comes in, but it’s a pretty solid jam if you’re into that sort of thing. Fave Songs: The Castle, 7 and 7 Is
I enjoyed the theatrics and good use of the flute, clavi, etc. Last song was a turn off though
Fun album, nothing particularly caught my attention enough to rate it any higher than a 3 though.
Busy and ambitious.
3.3 Nog wel leuke schijfkes soms. Leuke energie ook.
que vida tof
Strong album, songs felt lively and the instrumental was also fun till the last song where it kinda got into wankery
1. The weird one instrument per ear stereo is much better than the unmastered mono. 2. The sound is kinda sweet. It makes me smile. 3. Revelation is entertaining background music. I like this music a lot, but at the same time I kind of prefer Jazz Music like Gerry Mulligan. I like this album tho, solid fun. It's the little nuances that make it. Very fun. So why only 3? Because I feel as supposedly significant and fun this is, I couldn't read into the lyrics and I don't see this growing on me. 3+/5
mellow dramatic, repetitive, but nice sound
Psychedelic.
it's quite good! lol idk can learn "the castle"
beatles vibes from this album. best song: emotions
theatrical cute
Side 1 is a mess. Side 2's sprawling 19 minute jam 'Revelation' is worth the admission but skip the rest. 'Forever Changes' it isn't
Better than I expected. Some great tracks.
Nota: 3.5
Surprisingly OK
It was an OK album, nothing too exceptional. Nice listen as background music.
haha theres a modern rapper with that name but idk about the 1966 version? this would be more fun if i were stoned. Solid 3 stars so far though, i dont hate it.
Never heard of these guys. Good fun. LOVEd that epic last track
This is exactly the kind of music my parents used to listen to when I was growing up, so had a weirdly nostalgic feel to it despite being from years before my time. I enjoyed it, and did chuckle at every song being 2-3 minutes apart from the 18 minute finale.
Shrooms innit

alright album but weird and in a good way. i enjoyed listening to it but not quite as much as others similar
5/10. Pretty forgettable I guess, because I already don't remember it.
Not bad, sort of a rocky jazzy bluesy thing with a pretty varied sound. The last song was half the album which was weird and it went on for awhile but in general it was a pretty relaxed album.
I don't understand why this is considered psychedelic rock, because normally I'm not a fan of psychedelic songs and I liked it very much....probably I don't know what is real psychedelic rock. :-) In short, A good album with very pleasable songs and the last one "real" experimental or psychedelic but still cool! Worth it!
Some interesting stuff but it has the same production hiccups as many albums from around this time. Also, I hate the harpsichord and the last song was highly unnecessary (my left ear really experienced that drum solo). 6
Rock rarito
Semibängeri Helt jees psykadelisk rock. Passligt långa biisin
It's alright but it doesn't quite hold up compared to other 60's psych such as the 13th floor elevators. This is more of a basic rock feel.
A real 1960's record. Funny.
Unsure what to make of this one - absolute rippers ('Seven and Seven Is') among cheesy ballads ('Orange Skies') and extended jam tracks ('Revelation'). I don't know if this stands as an album per se, but the parts themselves are interesting and unique enough to warrant further listening.
Not bad!
false
They really went there with that last track huh
Its fine. I prefer the selt titled and Forever Changes though.
Most of the album has such a silly and whimsical sound to it. Seven and Seven Is felt like a jarring change of sound. Then the second half of the album is just Revelation, which in my opinion is the best track, it's a good one to just leave on.
Huh. I dunno. Weird
it was going til it wasnt
What the heck did I just listen to? It's like The Rolling Stones and The Doors dropped acid together and went to a Renaissance festival and made a love child, but this is its second cousin who can only be found on Temu. The only reason I might play it again would be to prank my friends.
Not quite as bad as I originally thought. The last track is very Doors like. Made me listen to the first part again.
This album was released the year I was born, but I’m not really that into it. It’s not terrible, so two stars...
It sounds like an endless Broadway psychedelic rock jam with bursts of angry vocals and jazzy sax. It feels like a drug trip. Not my taste.
I thought I might like it, but man that jam session really took the wind out the sails.
It's psychedelic rock, as in, you need to be on a huge dose of psychedelics to survive the final track. Boring.
This seemed to have a musical theme.. and then like three tracks were in a completely different realm. Also the theme sucked.
Sixties mix of styles. Nothing great.
Da Crapo Too many pan pipes. Less pan pipes please. “She Comes in Colors” is a pretty sweet song though.
ok
got tired of this sorta fast
Mildly entertaining psychedelic folk. 2.5 stars
When people say they hate 60's music, this is what they mean.
This was ok, usually I’m into a 17+ minute jam but that was not great. The rest of the album was nothing special either, run of the mill 60s soft rock.
This is forgettable and blended into the background instantly.
I disliked nearly everything about this. Psychedelic rock is very low on my genres, and this probably moved it lower. Why harpsichords? I didn't listen to the lyrics very closely, but when I did, they were nonsensical. And an 18 minutes closing song on a 36 minute album offends me for some reason. I want to give it 1 star but it's just so bland that I don't even want to give it the distinction of being one of the few albums that evokes repulsion in me. It's more extreme annoyance.
5/10 Its fine
The instrumental at the end was the most interesting track of this album.
Another very uninteresting album on this list
No thank you
Grooooveyy baby. First things first She Comes in Colours is the Madonna song inspiration in Austin Powers. Good they liked a flute back in the day. I can picture the guy who played Hitler in the Producers singing these songs. Sooo pleasantly tripping along to side 1then the reaslation hits the last song is 19 minutes I assume all side 2. Well he feels alright Dadio
Well, it wasn't too interesting, but certainly not bad.... then the final song came....
There were some quirky aspects that made this interesting, but I wouldn't call it good.
Fine. Not remarkable.
A little bit confused why this is on the list. Second rate Rolling Stones/The Kinks with nothing particularly interesting. The final song tried to do something, but never quite made it.
oh well, side two is awful. On the whole, the subsequent record „Forever Changes“ is much stronger.
"what is this, a freak out?" - v. beauregarde
It was okay but I don't think I'll listen to this ever again. Uh. 2.
horrifying that this is what all psych rock sounds like to people
Not nearly as good as Forever Changes in my opinion.
I think this album would probably have been great if you had been there in 1966. In 2026 it doesn't quite hit the same, it sounds the way it was, they were trying to figure this whole thing out. Thanks for lending a hand in figuring things out but I'll never listen this again.
weird album. notable for being one of the first examples of jazz rock i guess, so it's definitely got a strong 60s vibe, but also it's not really anything? it's a weird album because it feels like it has all the makings of something solid but it just..... doesn't congeal. it's bizarrely weighted too between six short forgettable songs and then a twenty minute jam fest that leans heavy on the jazz which i decently enjoyed. it's hard not to appreciate some good jazz, even if it makes this album a baffling experience. i would have loved it if most of the album was not in my left ear though. might've been good.
Fighting between enjoying the music and hating the singing. The lyrics are mostly nonesense and honestly I just cannot get over the singing aspect but there is definitely stuff to like here. The flutes, saxophone, organ and jazz elements all are great. Also the mixing here is just... weird. It follows the 60s style of hard panning the instruments which can sometimes work but here it really loses a bit of punch. Luckily "revelation" is by far the best song on here in my opinion, because otherwise it would be incredibly painful at 18 minutes. Kinda suprised me for how short this album is, it still felt like it dragged.
This is not psychedelic rock. And it is very mediocre
I really found this quite unlikable. Can see what they were doing, but nope: not for me.
Not a fan of the vocals, instrumentally interesting in parts. For a 35 min album, its hard to get through Standout song: Que Vida!
Their second album. Psychedelic Rock / Pop. It's all very Hippy, happy clappy, quirky, poetry recital to a flute and organ. Short and sweet and not very memorable.
Noisey, word, not my vibe. Not sure why it made it here compared to other Love Albume?
A good friend and fellow 1001 challenger described this album as 'A bit tedious. ' Incorrect! This album is VERY tedious. It is true that "The coolest things about this album might be Neanderthal Han solo on the cover. "
A bit tedious.
I was vibing until the bad Doors imitation in the last song. Too bad as I really like what I heard of their other album.
It was okay. Just not for me
Man skulle nok have været der. 2,5
There were a number of the openings of these songs that I was quite enjoying, but then nearly all of them took a turn for the worse, normally when the singing started, or there was suddenly so much flute, or something else wacky occurred that completely changed the song in a way I didn’t enjoy, or that last track turned out to be 18 minutes long.
The songwriting isn’t bad here, I don’t think, but almost all of these songs I think would’ve been done better by a better band. Or in a different genre. I loved the start of revelation and would’ve happily listened to much much more of it if they were simply better musicians. Disappointing.
Favorite Song: Orange Skies
2.5 First 6 songs were alright but usually there was that something holding them back from being really good, maybe the vocals/lyrics? The last song was just ridiculously overindulgent, thought it was starting to drag on by minute 4 and then it lasted 15 more
meh
Okayish 60s pop rock.
5/10
Not for me
I found the lyrics trying. The music is ok
Dejlig kort - utrolig kedelig
Not a clue! Short little guy and nothing has really stood out to me. Final song is genuinely endless. Sometimes in a good way sometimes with annoying sounds
A few songs I’ve heard before, but nothing special. 1960’s psychedelic.
A side? Stellar, B-side? A nice 2 minute song stretched to 18 minutes for no reason, I dont get why this is on the list.
Seven and Seven Is (mediocre version) and a lot of hippie nonsense.
Far too shaggy for me — especially the last track. Had a few solid tracks in the beginning but I didn’t love it. It’s no Forever Changes, that’s for sure.
So this is the predecessor to “Forever Changes.” Let’s see if it holds any hints to the greatness of that album. - So the A side is really solid baroque psychedelia, clearly from San Francisco in the mid 1960s. I particularly liked "Orange Skies," "7 and 7 is," and "She Comes in Colors." The issue with the record is the B side. It's hot garbage. The band apparently hated it too, which makes sense - it's pretty embarrassing. My only explanation for this track being on the record is that they just didn't have any other material and needed to release the record ASAP. Otherwise what the hell is it doing here. "Revelation" drags this thing from a solid 3/4 down to TWO STARS
cool, more forgettable 60s music. this one was actually going well until the NINETEEN MINUTE CLOSING TRACK THAT IS MORE THAN HALF THE ALBUM'S RUNTIME. two stars. favorites: orange skies, seven and seven is
While quite inventive for 1966, with everything from jazz to rock to psych flourishes as well as an 18-min track jammed into the album’s 36-min runtime, ultimately I just don’t really want to hear this music. I’m especially turned off by the lead’s gruff growl delivery. His rough delivery of sexual lyrics is decidedly unsexy, too.
This album is a bit of a disjointed mess, especially the improvisation-heavy final track. It's an interesting mess, at least, and I think that it was kind of fun even if it is ultimately forgettable. Favorite track: "She Comes in Colors"
Not my thing. 18 minute song! woahz
Love the flute on Orange Skies. That is all.
Goofy flower-child fluff for the most part. Seven and Seven Is was my favorite track. Revelations had some good ideas but I was turned off by the interminable saxophone solo.
This was just ok for me. In reality I’d go closer to a 2.5, but I just found it to be kind of boring. There is much more interesting Psychedelic rock in this era that is ultimately just better.
This is some pretty heady (at least ephemeral) stuff. Completely of its era, the nearly 19 minute track capping things off saves it, but otherwise it's sort of just background music in a 60's biopic.
This album is listed as psychedelic rock, but there’s some early punk, blues, surf rock and folk mixed in. Unfortunately, the lead singer’s vocal style makes every song sound like a joke. It makes the entire album feel satirical and goofy.
2.5. It’s not a 2 but don’t think it’s good enough to be a 3.
No es un album para mí
Nothing on this album really captured me. The vocal delivery kept runining the experience every time I got close to being engaged. There’s clearly some skilled musicianship here but to me it’s just not very interesting.
I was ready to hate this, but I don't and I'm struggling to articulate exactly why. It's very raw and not great, you'll get no argument from me on that. But they're going for something interesting here. It's rhythmically interesting... to a fault. I like the experimentation but it's a miss, like they forgot to ground the syncopation and time signature changes with a coherent groove. The vocals are bold and adventurous... again to a fault. I can say much the same about the instrumental work and orchestration. It's like they strive for interesting musical things to experiment with and overshoot each time. I can't help but appreciate the effort and enthusiasm, but there's really no arguing that the execution isn't quite there. And then they close it with a John Lee Hooker-style endless boogie jam session that's just... idk, let's just say that I'm glad the Allman Brothers figured out how to do that well so we didn't just go into the 70s with THAT as the standard. It's like these guys tried to do what bands like KGLW and Chicano Batman would later perfect, but these dudes just didn't quite know how to pull it off. I feel like I even hear Motorhead and Led Zeppelin in here sometimes. This is the unrefined raw material that someone else could come along later and turn into something good. It's like looking at a car from the 1910s and going "wow, this really sucks, they clearly hadn't figured out how to make a good car yet", but you have to have some respect for the pioneers who had no clue what they were doing, but tried anyway. Also, flute everywhere? That's a choice.
Album 68 Top 3 "favorites" off the album: Orange Skies, Stephanie Knows Who, The Castle I don't know, guys...for once, I'm not crazy about all the sax and flute and such. I'm just chalking it up to, "I don't like psychedelic rock" and moving on. I was already worn out by the end and then got steamrolled by an 18 minute track as the finale. It is what it is, I guess. I don't have the energy to go back and listen to it all again.
Well that was boring. I can at least see how considering when this album came out that it was pretty ahead of the curve, but listening to it now it does just feel like another example from the endless list of "they walked so that others could run."
This went into the “2” file in my mind by second track. I tried to be open minded but unfortunately nothing happened to change that opinion. In fact, it was cemented into “2” status with the last track clocking in at 19 min. It’s hard to pull off an album side length psychedelic track, that is, unless your bands name is Iron Butterfly.
Another example of an album that shouldn’t be on here and is taking up space for another deserving band. There’s many WTF moments here from forced unnecessary production decisions (simply throwing in sleigh bells and harpsichord outros) to a ridiculous 18 minute final track jam of drivel. The only thing keeping this out of lowest ranking for me is the song “7 and 7 is” which is performed way better by artists like the Sidewinders and Billy Bragg.
I was intrigued at the beginning, before this one settled firmly in 2 territory.
What the hell was going on in the 60s!?! This album sounds like drugs. And can’t say I enjoyed it. You know what else I don’t enjoy. Flutes. My son at one point wanted to play the flute. I steered him away from this. Does that make me a bad parent? It will be funny when he rebels….by playing the flute. Anyways, this gets two “mehs”
This album is fine, but rounding down based on that dumb 17 minute jam band shit at the end. 2.5/5
Even the original book admits that the 20 minute pointless jam session of side 2, 'Revelation' is 'frankly only worth listening to once'. So we're here judging six really pretty middling psych rock tracks from side 1. I don't see the appeal at all, and I actually tend to like psych rock.
Feels like they were just messing around the whole albums. When the singing was good the music was bad and when the singing was bad the music was good. The 18 min track was a bit overindulgent but got better towards the end. A very odd listening experience.
Honestly unmemorable. I didn't write notes yesterday about this album and now nothing sticks out. Not a great sign but also not so terrible that I remember that either. Meh.
Not every bit of psychedelic experimentation was a winner, this being a good example 2.5*
While it was ok for the most part, it will not stay in my mind whatsoever.
I actually kinda liked the last 18 minute long song the most, even though it got weird in some parts.
Starts strong, loses me very quickly when it devolves into noises and grunts 2/5
fine
I was coming around on this album until I realised that Spotify was just autoplaying music long after the album finished. This is a bit too corny for me, even by the standards of the era.
I wasn’t familiar with this band and I don’t love them. Didn’t finish album.
I really enjoyed the album "Forever Changes". A hidden gem that I didn't know even existed. "Da Capo" is the album released before "Forever Changes." I didn't really enjoy this album as much... it's quite different. I also didn't like that there was an 18+ minute Side B of just one track. If it was Genesis "Supper's Ready" I would be praising the song. This was not worthy of 18+ minutes.
Solid, nothing too crazy but liked
Eh. I feel like it's a product of it's time. Not bad, but albums that are similar and/or came out around it I'm sure are better
Damn hippies
Zappa's parodies of this era were better albums than the targets themselves by a wide margin.
4/10 It was silly and fun for the first few songs, but really fell off with that last track.
The cutting room floor is there for a reason. Use it.
So this one was one of those albums where you go "Hmm what happened here?" There were some ok songs in this one but for most of them at some point I was wondering are the musicians even trying to perform their best. The last song was such a rollercoaster, it started good and decended in to ok and then to what am I listening territory. Maybe without the last song this could've been 2,5 but with it it is 1,5 and I'll round up.
Tried
Eh
Very dated. Very 1960s. It should have stayed in the 60s. Too psychedelic for my tastes
Didn't listen to all of this album. Not really into it.
Just when you thought the 60s couldn't get more self indulgent along comes Love with what appears to be a 17 minute song about oral sex. The rest, which is, for a mercy, a further 19 minutes, is full of mind expanding poetry and music that goes from flute driven folk to garage grunge. Not very good now and I suspect not very good back in the day.
Not terrible, but nothing special. Sounds like a lot of bands from this time. So I will go with a 2.5, and round down.
Kinda crap.
Another one by these guys. Less lovely than the other one I think.
2 y haciéndole un favor
Like wow, man. There are a couple of half decent tunes, then we come to Revelation which should have ensured that this album was consigned to the dustbin of history.
Ahead of its time! In that I thought obnoxious 18 minute single tracks came much later.
An American band trying to find their place between The Stones, The Beatles, The Doors and The Who. Nice try, but just a try.
Like the originality, I guess, but why would you listen to this when The Doors and The The Raconteurs are also available?
Very 60s, not something I'd listen to again. I had to look up the singer on Que Vida because I imagined Janice from Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem
Why is almost all American Psychedelia so bad?
pop de los 60, tranquilo, nada muy allá
Judging by the variety of instruments and weirdness of the lyrics I think we can safely say this band’s creativity may been fuelled by some illegal drugs. Very 60s sounding but too juvenile and offbeat.
I forgot about this album the minute I finished listening to it.
On the road so can't look them up. But they aren't very good. The only song that had promise was Revelation, but they did the whole, "let's make this an 18 minute monstrosity" thing.
That was weird.
The instrumentation is so unbelievably up my street. But I am so unbelievably fed up with bad singers ruining albums on this list.
Not my style. ★★
I quite like the flute, pretty sure it was quite a popular instrument around this time for some reason. The singer (maybe multiple) are quite mixed, some parts are quite good and some are actually horrible, like on the first and last song. The guitar stuff is quite interesting, probably more similar to the jangly stuff on the Byrds than some other rock guitar sounds of this era. They keys parts are quite cool as well I guess. Its pretty clean that this is a very rushed album, and that they didn't have enough material, case and point the last song, which just KEEPS GOING.... Its like that one Rolling Stones song, but he's just yelling. There's just not enough stuff here for it to be even slightly good. Favourite songs: iQue Vida!, seven and seven is, she comes in colors. Overall around 4/10
There is nothing to love about Love. I've had more than 2 weeks now of very average albums, this is the most uninspiring run.
01) Stephanie Knows Who - 6,5 02) Orange Skies - 6,5 03) ¡Que Vida! - 5,5 04) 7 and 7 Is - 6,5 05) The Castle - 6,0 06) She Comes in Colors - 6,5 07) Revelation - 4,0 TOTAL: 5,93 (59/100) Current ranking: 604/753
It grew on me as I listened, but I still wasn't really struck by it
this one is not too remarkable Will I listen to again: 3%
I loved and hated this album all at once. Scratch that - the last song sounds like someone jumping between awful radio stations Not one to listen to at work - not NSFW, but just a lot of side-eyes and “what the fuck is this?”
If ever there was an album of two halves … The first half of this comprises of six songs that, whilst not as good as anything on Forever Changes, show flashes of some of the greatness that would come. The second half, though … whew, it’s like parody Doors, just meandering boring bullshit and completely shafts the record. I can’t imagine many people flipped the LP more than once.
Doors Light.
Dated, sort of goofy, such a clear distillation of 60s rock that it almost feels like a parody of itself (including the way-too-long last track)
It’s like a grab bag of everything about “the 60s”. For 1966 it was very in the thick of psychedelica and there are some neat moments (the last song is the best, honestly - Zeppelin flavor and cool guitar work). But, it’s a lot of flute and a lot of harpsichord and pretty tough to get through the whole thing. Foundational perhaps but not necessarily super enjoyable in 2025.
Uh. No thank you?
Meh. I didn't hate it, didn't really like it that much either.
The nicest thing I can say about this album is that it’s short (and, begrudgingly, that it’s a bit unusual). I can see the jazz influence here, and even the early beginnings of punk, and normally those elements would be enough to make me enjoy the album at least a little. Here, though, it didn’t work, and the whole thing just didn’t sit right with me.
Generic late 60s rock, thought the first songs gave me some hope with its sinister undertones it kinda got boring
I enjoyed their other album on here, so I was looking forward to this, but it's nowhere near the quality of Forever Changes. There's nothing really interesting about this album - it's like if they just noodled around a bit in the studio and called it a day.
okay i read about this album while listening to the first song and the first song was okay and the internet didn’t say anything too great about it so im going to speed run it
Wow I love this
I always feel like I should like Love more. I know that sounds hacky, but it’s true. They’ve got all the components of bands I dig, but, at least for their albums represented on this list, I’m just not really connecting.
Absolutely all over the place - very 60s and quite bonkers, psychedelia, jangly instrumentation. Did not love.
A couple of good garage rock songs. But the baroque stuff is just really not my thing. I enjoyed the other Love album on the list more.
2.5/5
2.5
The strange style of this album did not resonate with me very much in certain parts. And perhaps psychedelia was quite new at the time but this does not feel very psychedelic at all. The voice was occasionally annoying to me. Seven and seven is was my favourite track on this album. I did enjoy the bass and the noodling on the guitar at the end. I hated the use of the harpsichord, flute and whatever else they used. It gave me immediate heartburn and made me feel like I was watching a medieval play on acid. Maybe that’s where the psychedelic aspect of this album comes in.
This is just a psychedelic mess. I didn't "love" it.
Most of it felt like a warm-up act for something better. That said, “Seven and Seven Is” absolutely rips—an explosive, proto-punk banger that stands head and shoulders above the rest.
5/10
What an interestint blend of genres. I respect how they mixed rock, jazz and some Bach. However, apart from the last long track it was not my cup of tea.
Not my jam.
Not a huge fan of this one. Side A is decent but I just don't love this style of 60s pop. The production is weak and performances loose. Side B being an extended jam doesn't help
There's a few genres on offer here. There's a bit of folk, some punk, some psychedelic rock, some pop. It's actually quite surprising considering this came out in 1966. The last track is 19 minutes long, which isn't a problem in itself, but it is when a vast majority of the middle section is like what bands do at live shows. It's just endless noodling and wankery as if the band members are being introduced by the lead singer. Honestly a good 15 minutes of this track is meandering shite. Overall a somewhat interesting album which maybe would have gotten a three or four from me if it was 1966, but today it's getting a two.
OMG - ugh. Sorry - -just doesn't do it.
I accidentally gave Simon and Garfunkle's Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme a 3 instead of a 4 because I was rushing so hard to give this one a 2/5. Thank god I never have to listen to this again. Grunting, boring, dry.
It was ok though I'm not sure why it would be included on this list. Nothing stands out
It's nowhere near as good as Forever Changes.
why the fuck is there so much flute? it feels like vocals are for one song and the instrumentals are for a completely different one.
Kuka ihme haluaa kuunnella kaikki nämä biisit kaksi kertaa putkeen?
Wild! 15 minutes for the first 6 songs, 20 minutes for the last song! Baroque rock, very flowery and orchestral, with lots of different genres fused. I think albums like this are a little much, but I did enjoy it!
60
the soundtrack to vanilla pudding
Already tried this one. Should like love but don’t
A little too jam band. Short album, but felt much longer.
I can do long songs but the 20 minute guitar solo on this was not where it's at. You're not Jimi Hendrix twin. Otherwise decent Psychadelic rock, but literally only 20 minutes of it Imma go 5.8/10
Sounds like exactly the thing that would've topped the British charts back in the hallucinogen-drenched 60s. I'm a little surprised it didn't. In fact, quite the opposite is happening in the present day: none of the songs come close to breaking a million streams on Spotify, suggesting that modern audiences don't appreciate this album's existence very much. And longevity is, of course, a very real part of what makes music good. The style is reminiscent of the Doors without Manzarek's keyboard/organ and with an uncanny-valley Morrison soundalike (but still much weaker). And, of course, without the hooks, riffs, or pizzazz that made the Doors so successful. The compositions are *okay* but nothing that inspiring. Every song on side 1 is decent, except for The Castle, which kind of spins its wheels in the mud without getting anywhere. The 19-minute Revelation, taking up the entirety of side 2, is a pretty feeble attempt at a proto-prog jam session that never really settles on any good hooks, chord progressions, or anything worth sitting through a second listen. I'll stick to my Pink Floyd prog epics. 2/5 Key tracks: Orange Skies, Seven and Seven Is
Really not sure how this made the list. Being generous, its pretty average fair at best, and it doesn't seem to be any more ground breaking than any other record of the time.
Half of this is dross, but half of it is kind of fun. I think the weak parts do outweigh the good parts, though, so the album as a whole is disjointed and not consistent.
2.5 - weird psychedelic. Not great not terrible
Da Capo This was a bit of a struggle, the whimsical psychedelia not really piquing my interest, all just feeling a bit trite. Forever Changes I liked, and gave it a 4, but nothing on here is as good as anything on that, the only thing I really liked was the long but enjoyable Revelation, which had a nice groove and some decent guitar lines and runs. It also doesn’t sound quite as good as I remember FC sounding, the drums feel a little insubstantial in the left channel and some of the mixing seems a bit scattergun, although there is a nice, round bass tone. I will revisit Forever Changes, but I don’t think I’ll come back to this, the winsomeness just overpowers it for me 👨❤️💋👨👨❤️💋👨 Playlist submission: Revelation
Less sophisticated than their eponymous album, and confined within the trappings of contrived 60s pyschedelia, half the time it gets lost up its own psychedelic pop fundament. A harpsichord here, a flute there, a change to waltz timing over there. Why are there so many of them on the cover? Does it really takes that many grave looking fellows to produce such whimsy? And I've just read the organist is called Alban Pfisterer. I'm sure there's a joke there about being a Pfisterer and having a silent p. Maybe this was an important one for the time. It's certainly warming up for Forever Changes. As an album it doesn't hang together. But some interesting moments.
It was genuinely fine until the last track which felt like being psychologically tortured. Hell no.
