Reviews (page 3 of 7)
really fun instrumentation, but over half the album is the aimless final track of noodling. not actively bad to listen to or anything but it feels like they kind of gave up and just improvised most of it. probably really sick if you're high in the 70s
Better than I thought and def gets better after first track.
ja is ok? jazzig i guess
It’s no Forever Changes but it is at times lush, at times abrasive, at times inventive, at times brilliant and at times incoherent. Never boring.
I think those were sounds of the lead singer literally copulating at the end of this album, like rock moans are one thing... those were another. 3 feels generous, but it had some cool moments on there, the harpsichord was especially memorable. Nothing to write home about though, could easily be cleared to make way for 100s of other more deserving psych rock albums.
It was fine, but nothing more than that.
Temu-Doors
Better than expected
A real record of two halves. Side 1 is glorious, Side 2 is a fairly tedious 19 min jam (albeit with a few nice flourishes).
Enjoyed this quite a lot in the end. Nice feel to the album, good guitar playing. Didn't listen to the entire repeat of the album on Spotify though.
I had not heard this previously and I enjoyed it rather more than “Forever Changes” an LP I like very much - three stars. Tom.
Surprisingly good. Wouldn't listen to it otherwise but still good. 3.5/5
nice mellow 60's vibe some good tracks
293/1089 generally don’t love this kind of 60s pop and when it leaned into that style i wasn’t super excited but it also leant into some more punky/psychedelic sounds that i didn’t mind ¡Que Vida! stood out to me for that reason, also Revelation too. I’m a sucker for a long track where an artist/band just vibes and plays it out and i’m glad they did that here, it was chill 52/100
Very pleasant and fun! No real negatives I like a jam and I like the sound and yeah it's good but I don't think I'll have a craving to listen to it again
Started off strong but the last song dragged a bit
I think it's the singing that bothers me, more than the sometimes cheesy melodies. Had the singer been a bit stronger in his approach, some of these songs might have survived as exemplary 60s psychedelic rock.
Stephanie Knows Who 3.4 Orange Skies 3 ¡Que Vida! 3.4 7 and 7 Is 3.3 The Castle 3.5 She Comes in Colors 3.5 Revelation 3.6 Score: 3.385714286
Kaikenmoista 60-luvun rokkia, kevyempää ja kovempaa, psykedeelistä. Vikana vielä 19 minuuttimen räväkkä biisi. Aika räyhäkästä ajalleen. Parhaat: Orange Skies, Revelation
the screaming was so unnecessary 😭 i liked orange skies tho
First side is kinda weak, the second is okay but the lyrics are awful
Another album where the vocals distract badly from the awesome music. Giving it a 3 for the music instead of a 2. Looking forward to hearing their next album when it comes up.
Fine pleasant sounds of 1960s psychedelia. But my second album in 3 days with an 18 minute closing track. No need for that. 3 stars.
I am not too sure that the final track is strong enough to warrant being more than half the album’s length, even though I do like it. Still, quite a lot to like here.
Interesting but dated.
Zanimljiv album, čak i ugodno iznenađenje. Par stvari su mi baš dobre. 3/5, 5/10
A perfectly fine slab of 60s psych rock. Nothing new or crazy going on here. If you like psych rock I'd imagine you'd enjoy this album and if you don't, I don't think there is enough here to change your mind. 3/5
First listen to this predecessor to the monumental “Forever Changes”. It has its moments, but is undone by the ponderous ham that ends the album and occupies nearly 40% of its running time. The potential is there and you can hear it.
Classic rock sound with jazz influence, I'd expect it to be right up my alley. It ended up being almost exactly how I imagined it, so it's a fun listen but it was also a little anticlimactic. There's records I enjoy less that I'd be more excited about finding when I'm crate digging. It'd still be nice to have this in my collection, but I could also definitely live without it. I'm happy I've been introduced to Love. 3.4/5
im back at this álbum when im in acid 6/10
once again, the illest instrumentals accompanied by the worst vocals lol. but that psychedelic sound wins out :)
That 18 minute long one won me back
onda the beatles y elliott smith, me gustó
Listened to the mono version. It's a mixed bag - there's slightly maniacal sounding harpsichord on track one, but Orange Skies is dreamier baroque pop. Backing flute and a great melody and vocals. I like the next song too, another strong melody with jazzy sounding percussion. The Castle is another good one from side one, harpsichord standing out after a quiet start. The second side is one 19 minute track, Revelation. It's a little rough, is this old school rock n roll or blues? After a harmonica solo things go off the rails a little bit, with more solos and freeform jamming. I do like the bouncy bassline underneath it all, but this starts to go ok way too long. I respect this but it's hard to keep my attention throughout. Thought I would like this more but their best album is definitely more polished. This is still worth a listen for Orange Skies and !Que Vida! if nothing else.
I've never heard of this band before, but they have the most 60's band name ever. This was fun and was quite the listening adventure.
Fuck off with the 19 minute jam session.
This was a great blast of psychedelic rock! You know when the B side is 18 minutes that you are in for some weirdness, and Love did not fail to deliver on that. The album was interesting and worth future listens!
Kort sag, med fede elementer.
An interesting mix of music. Worth a listen.
pre listening: all i can say is never heard of em but they look like star wars characters..
3.0 When I saw the track listing and album time I had inkling it was going to be a collection of 2-3 minute 60s psycadelic pop songs and then a mammoth closer that drags on at the end. Spot on. Pioneering genre but far too over saturated on this list. Add it to the pile.
Orange skies is the best one and I liked the grooviness
i didn't "love" dis capo. whatever. it was fine
First impressions: it has total musical theatre qualities. Not what I was expecting at all. Stephanie knows who was bombastic and came out of nowhere for me! I enjoyed the horns and mix of instruments. It leads into orange skies which was honestly Beatles-esq. The flute was beautiful. ¡Que vida! was a little bit more enjoyable as a whole then the previous tracks! The flute comes back but there’s steady drums and synth as well. Seven and seven is was right back into the heavier side, which was great! The castle was somewhat slower but the guitar throughout was really nice. She comes in colours was probably one of my favourites. Well… there are many ways to kill my hype for an album, but a 20 minute long track punctuated by screaming and screeching horns is certainly one of them. Revelation sucks. Anyway, 3/5 ⭐️ cause the rest of the album doesn’t bring it back up. 82/1089
Surprisingly close to a 2, it didn’t have anything special and the last song was NOT IT
This was a first time listen all the way through and overall surprisingly enjoyable. Arthur Lee’s vocals are powerful and the amalgam of different musical styles keeps it overall pretty interesting. Proto-punk track 7 and 7 is was the highlight for me overall. A cut above garage rock with its psychedelic notes, it is a little bit of a banger on a record full of art rock/jazz rock tunes. With the second side devoted to a single track, Revelation, I could not help thinking that this is the new King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard track but Stu is not singing as it really defines the record as a whole bringing together every musical style except microtonal, combining blues, jazz, psychedelic, classical, rock and folk into a single track. If Angine DePoitrine guested on the track, then we would have microtonal covered. The track actually is a revelation as it presages what is going to be fully realized in Love’s next record Forever Changes. In total though you can tell this is a transition record for the band as they explore a wide range of musical styles branching out from their first record which is mostly folk rock. A for effort, but only a B+ for execution. 7/10 rounded to 3/5.
I only liked about half of the tracks. “Revelation” had to break a record or something. Pure insanity. “Orange Skies” and “She Comes in Colors” were enjoyable tracks. The vocalist is not a good vocalist 😬. The instrumentation was, for the most part, very good but his screechy, repetitive singing detracts from the overall sound. Three stars. One for each of those tracks.
Its very ok. I liked orange skies and thats abt it. Its not horrible but its just very bland, if boiled chicken was an album. Thankfully its a short listen, if it was any longer I would’ve def liked this album less. 4.8/10
Inoffensively meh
This album walked so screamo could run
you really need to be on acid in the 60s to like this. however the last song was a pretty big redeemer for me
GOT DAMN!! That last 18 min track was actually pretty fucking dope. Amazing solos in that. The drum solo was fire! Interesting album. 3 stars.
I immediately thought exactly the same thing about this Love album as I did about the first Love album I listened to - and that's without looking beforehand. It screams 1967 (ok so I got that bit wrong - it's 1966!). It's so late 60's psychedelia that if I were ever to have an Austin Powers themed party then this would be number 1 on the playlist. (Or number 2 after their other album). It was a nice listen overall, but since I'm not planning any 60's parties in the near future I doubt I will hear it again.
I enjoyed this overall. The rhythm section is great on track 4. The closer is a bit self-indulgent, though. It could have been a 4, but that brings it down to a 3.
Good vibes
Very enjoyable album featuring the beginnings of jazz rock. More jazz flute!
Nice album
Music and vocals balance the cringey lyrics throughout the album. If you don’t listen to the lyrics, this is a good album. With them, it’s average.
Just fine. 2.5/5
Sound a bit like The Doors.
Da Capo was an interesting listen, even though it didn’t fully click with me. Some of the shorter songs are enjoyable, but the long jam “Revelation” taking up nearly half the album feels excessive. I can see why the band was influential, but overall the album feels more historically interesting than personally engaging.
Super cool. Great variation of sounds
Interesting 60s pop with some psychedelic elements to it but I didn't like it enough to go back to it.
More 60s music. Nothing too crazy.
I like their Forever Changes album better.
got some good stuff on there
For psychedelic rock it could have been a lot worse.
Good but not as good as Forever Changes.
Aaaaaalrigth, sans plus
Love love, but this didn't hit the mark the way Forever Changes did for me. Last two songs brought the score back up
That's not my taste in music - But some pleasant songs
Good sound, but didn’t click with me.
3.5 stars. A few good tracks I'd never heard of before.
Nice
Surprisingly good album. Mixed of 60 rock styles - blues, French pop, jangle, some jazz influence. Some tracks are even proto-punk. I like the singers voice. I’ve never heard of this band, but this isn’t just more mid 60’s slop. This is a solid album. Notable tracks include Orange Skies, Que Vida, Seven and Seven Is, The Castle, She Comes in Colors.
I like Forever Changes more
Very much of its era and some of it hasn’t really aged that well. It’s a bit like the soundtrack to an Austin Powers film! Still enjoyed it though.
Didn't enjoy this as much as their album "Forever Changes", but its still pretty good...shades of the Doors, early Stones, the Animals, etc mixed with the summer of love vibes. They have a good sound, and Arthur Lee has a unique singing style, but some moments were a little too on the nose 60s hippies flower children prancing in a meadow. I like it, but I'm going 3.5 with a round down because of some of the goofy hippy stuff and 18 minute closer.
Nice enough psych/pop/rock with a folky flavour. Dd they run out of songs? There's got to be a reason for the over-long closing track.
For 1966, I can't see how this album wasn't WAY ahead of its time. Is there some psychedelia here? Yes. But I'm not sure that's the best way to describe this group, or at least the first half of this album. I'm also not really sure what to describe a rock group that uses this much harpsichord, but nevertheless I had a good time with half of this album. If you just never flipped it over, it'd be a perfectly serviceable, edgy and somehow unabashedly nerdy collection of songs. Highlight: ¡Que Vida! Lowlight: Revelation Surprise Hit: Orange Skies Surprise Hit #2: Seven and Seven Is
Not really my thing
This is out there and wacky and all that but not particularly cohesive or engaging. Good musicianship but I mean come on, even some of the band thought Revelation was terrible. 2.5
3.5⭐️/5 01.28.2026
Sounds like dudes hallucinating that they are the Doors.
3.5 Revelation kind of carries this album.
I listened to this album and then read the reviews and was surprised to see it was released in the 60’s. It was okay, I liked the song cadence up until that last song, which just went on forever!
The doors but not the doors but still good?
Not as good as forever changes because but decent
Not my cup of tea.
Interesting but not my thing
They were close to doing something good here. 2.5/5
It was not bad and made me consider checking out some of their other albums.
Not bad! But they should have stopped before the last song. This is just not good.
7.5 / 10
enjoyed the last song the most.
A really nice positive listen, plenty of feel good songs. I think this record could really use a remaster, the version I listened to on Spotify really sounds like its lacking any oomph to it. Some really nice playing and I liked the vocals. I dont feel the song "Revalation" justified its run time for me, I never found it to be interesting enough.
This was just okay!
Not terrible but not great.
Pretty standard mid 60s psychedelia pop stuff
not my favorite, not terrible it is a vibe
I’ve really liked Love recently, It that last song drug this down.
The vocals sounded out of place, had some reminiscent sounds of KGLW Paper Mache Dream Balloon
Surprisingly diverse and non-linear for 1966. +1 for that. I'll give 3/5 overall - I've lost enough faith in this list that my default ranking has become 2/5.
This is sixties psychedelic with tons of harpsichord and flute solos
7,4
When Love Breaks Down
Kept getting a third through the final song and had to switch off. Some nice earlier tracks though.
I Enjoyed listening to this! It's probably not as good as Forever Changes, which I'm looking forward to discovering when it comes.
Ganz ok
Fun album, bit noodly but enjoyable.
Haha great album from a legendary band, but I’d personally omit it from the list. Forever Changes is their magnum opus and is lightyears ahead of this record, but both I’d say are still essential psychedelic albums.
before you die, you MUST listen to Love's fairly generic and uninteresting second album which was less successful and is universally held in less esteem than their third album, which you also must listen to, and which is itself just fine! you simply must!!!
This was a decent listen, but it didn’t hit me the same way Forever Changes did. I just listened to that one a few weeks ago, and it definitely left a stronger impression. There are some cool moments here and you can hear the band finding their sound, but it feels a little less focused overall.
I really enjoyed this - very interesting and pleasant folky music. Very nice on a sunny summer day.
Lidt tværfløjte, lidt cembalo, lidt syre-blues
Not their quintessential album, that would be Forever Changes, but I like how raw and wild this one is
Probably a precursor to summer of love stuff and Doors stuff. Pulled off some different sounding songs which is appreciated.
If you like The Doors and are looking for a kind of low-rent version of that band, this might be the album for you! Did I need to hear it before I die? Nah.
This one reminds me of a kitten at the stage when they are at their wildest and most feral. When they run across the room, up the drapes, and fly across a table, purposefully knocking everything off. When they sneak attack your ankles at night, the age when they are most free. Then, as the album winds down, it feels like a little nap. Except that even their dreams are full of ferocious animals like lions and tigers, and the energy continues.
Groovy. I know I'm supposed to like the next album better but to be honest the first one is my fave - lean and mean- basic but energetic. . This one has its obvious highs (7&7 Is - ridiculously awesome and forward gazing. But it has its fair share of the goofy...
This is one of those bands where I feel you had to be there to get them, and I wasn't there. From here, it's just mediocre 60s psychedelia. The side long track is…fine? It goes pretty much nowhere. The side A tracks range from great (Seven and Seven Is) to decent (She Comes In Colors) to irritatingly overcooked (Stephanie Knows Who). Anyway, I don't get Love. I feel the same about Forever Changes, which is on the list as well. How tf did these guys get two albums on this list?
Psychedelic Jazz-Rock from the the mid-1960s. The Psychedelic-Rock tracks are OK, but I'm not a fan of the Jazz-Rock tracks; my favourite tracks were "7 and 7 Is" and the 19-minute "Revelation". It sounds a little bit dated now.
Kind of cool, kind of weird. In some ways it reminded me of Modest Mouse. I liked how the vocals and music would just kind of go full send and get really weird. Then other songs kind of went back to a somewhat predictable pattern. Not my favorite, but I definitely enjoyed this!
I have no idea what to expect, but check out those outfits! They’ve gone all in on “flute”. Wouldn’t say this is truly “Psychedelic Rock”. Hints of, for sure, but this feels much lighter and airy compared to much psych rock. Really enjoyed how clear and bright everything sounds.. Despite some weirdness - is that a bicycle bell? - I enjoyed this more than I had any right to. 4/5
*Interesting rock sound with experimental parts. *Revelation was a cool jazz exploration, but not enough to increase its score
Never heard of album or band. Not sure what to expect. Stephanie knows is interesting. Good guitar, sounds ahead of its time. Not the biggest fan of the solo but I like the jazz fusion. Orange skies is fine, nothing special. Que vida is good, good songwriting but background is old. Not really a fan of the castle. She comes in colors is better. 18 minute closer is crazy. Let’s see how far I make it. Really good production/background music at least. Fine song, didn’t need to be 18 mins. Pretty good album but nothing special. 2.5 stars.
While not the best example of 60s psychedelia or even the best of Love's albums, I found this a pleasant enough listen for the most part up to the last track, where at points it sounds like the singer is having some sort of episode... The main standout track for me was Seven and Seven Is, I like that it had a more garagey vibe. Wish there had been more like that!
I listened to this album only hours ago, and I've already forgotten everything about it except that the last song was super long. It wasn't bad, just not the most memorable album of that era.
Favorite Track: The Castle
2.6 2x
How can something musically this good, be lyrically this bad??? Songs would start and I'd think "okay, here we go!" And then the eye-rolling lyrics would hit and it would send me straight back to "ugh, really?" I'm calling it 3 stars, but it's not 3 stars; it's somehow both 1 star and 5 stars and I cannot tell which.
5.4/10
oh. i have heard of their third album, forever changes, which is praised highly by rym users. seems that one is on the list as well. i like the first half but the 18 minute long blues rock second half is so mid 3.5/5
Liked some of it, but then again, I like jambands and psychedelic music of all sorts
love the 17 minute jam session, but the first half was meh
I was blowing this one off, until I heard “Revolution.” Giving it my full attention, I can see why it’s on the list. I’m sure this influenced a lot of bands, even if it wasn’t for good. I liked it a little more than okay, but I can see a lot of people really disliking it.
I didn't hate it. Decent enough, particularly given the time it was recorded. Seems to be a predecessor to the Doors. I probably would have liked it more, had a been a cool cat living in the swingin' 60's, daddio. 3.5*
This album definitely employs a lot of different styles and was an interesting listen overall.
Love's album Forever Changes is one I had been chasing back in my collecting days. I never found a copy of the LP, so I was left wondering what all the fuss was about. I was interested when Da Capo came up today, as it gave me my first chance to hear what they sound like. I read some reviews, and it did not bode well. My initial thought as I got through the first few songs was that this sounded like a compilation of different bands. Arthur Lee's vocals changed significantly between songs. As did the playing and musical styles of each song. I didn't really love (bad pun intended) any of the songs, but I didn't dislike them either. The song that I enjoyed best was Revelation. Yes it's long, but it rocked and it worked for me. I can't say I'll ever need to listen to it again, but it worked for me.
I didn't expect to like this after the first song, but the album really grew on me. It's disjointed but in a really interesting way and there were tonnes of ideas. Listened three times and will revisit. Not strong enough for a 4 but a high 3.
Do I love Love? Well, as far as this album is concerned, no. I don't particularly love Love's album Da Capo. Do I hate it? No. Of course not. I'm not huge on it though. I think it's mainly the vocals. They kind of annoy me a little. Not the worst vocals I've heard, but songs like "Stephanie Knows Who" and "Seven and Seven Is" are hampered a bit by the vocal delivery for me. The instrumentation is pretty good though. I like the varied sounds of the music. It's pretty firmly psychedelia, but there are some other influences that make an album that's at least somewhat interesting. The writing could've aged better, but it could've been worse. I think this is most obvious on the closer "Revelation." I was actually quite excited for this song given its 19-minute length promising some cool experimental track, but the writing gives off some real Jimmy Page vibes, and not really in the good way. The song itself doesn't really warrant the runtime for me. I will say one hopeful thing though. Well, it does kind of put this album down in the process, but it has to be done. This album doesn't need to be on this list. Why? Well, it's simple. There's a better Love album already on it. Apparently, this album's followup, Forever Changes, is actually quite good. It's seen a fairly high amount of praise. Not quite to the level of an album like Pet Sounds, but more akin to something like Odessey and Oracle. That album probably belongs here. I can't confirm it since I haven't heard the album, but I trust that it's a worthwhile experience. For now, I have to say that Da Capo leaves things to be desired. It's not bad, but, ironically speaking, I don't love it. Light 3/5.
2 or 3
alright
Habil hippierock
Not a bad album, but nothing much stood out except for the last song - mainly because it was so long.
Great guitar!
3.3 I got a fever, and the only prescription is more harpsichord. For a 38 minute album its sure got a lot of different themes/types of 60's music.
Sounded ok, wouldn’t relisten.
Not my sort of thing unfortunately A solid "ok" 3 ⭐️
Love is a band I'd maybe heard one song from prior. This is their second album on the list and I'm a little surprised that their sound and name didn't have more staying power in the intergenerational zeitgeist. This isn't as strong of an album as Forever Changes but it's still a good album.
? Early PsychodelicProgRock. Entspannter Sonnen morgen am Balkon. Album läuft gut durch. Höre ich es nochmal, wahrscheinlich nicht... C
Það eru næs barokkpoppmóment hérna, og stundum fín sjöundatugargrúv. Heilt yfir er þetta oftast ágætt, en þetta 18 mínútna revelation lag í lokin dregur plötuna hressilega niður.
There's some cool stuff in here, but not enough to merit more than a 3. I love the fashion -- very west coast hippie. The music is just ok. 3/5
Sounds like the special guest star band on an episode of Scooby Doo Where Are You?
A little paych, a little folk, a little rock and jazz
Achei foda, bem legal 7,5/10
Da Tago Mago more like. This shit fucking slapped, especially that 18 minute track at the end. Every track was clean and beautifully produced for 1966. Pretty underrated record right here.
Good but random as all hell. One minute they sound like the Doors, the next like a jam band, the next like CCR. That randomness hurt my opinion on the album.
Fun album, nice and short but ultimately forgettable
coupla bangers
Apparently I already listened to their other album. I couldn't remember a single song from it, I only recognized the album cover. I have the feeling this will also happen with this album. I might understand why it was on this list, there is something foundational about it, but nothing grips you. The 18 min jam song was a bit much
Interesting enough, might revisit a song or two from this album, but largely indistinguishable from other records of the era.
Pretty good. Not great. But not bad. Kinda...you know, alright. It had some good parts, and some tedious ones (particularly side two, the overlong "Revelation"). Several parts had me recognizing that the boundary between "Psychedelic" and "Drug Music" had been crossed over and jumped back repeatedly.
I think my final position on 60s Psychedelic Rock is this: if just one band had come up with it, and done one album, it would be a really cool album. But instead, every band came up with it, and did many albums, to rapidly diminishing returns. The whole thing is diluted past a point of being able to even appreciate the good stuff. With that said, this is maybe the good stuff? I gave it an honest chance and it sort of delivered. A bit more edge than a lot of similar ones, some actually cool instrumentation. It was fine. If it was the only psychedelic record I would probably think it was great.
60s love for the masses.
3/5
I quite enjoyed the good vibes until the final track where we hear a meth head tweak on the track for what feels like a lifetime
I like Love in general, this isn't their best work. Will probably need another listen
Hippy freak out jamz.
Album 909 of 1089 Love - Da Capo (1966) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Today’s album was Da Capo by Love. Some nice psychedelic rock here. Nothing that completely takes it over the top, but still a fine listen. It definitely represents the genre well, with those swirling guitars, odd little twists in the arrangements, and a mix of both gentler passages and more driving ones. The long closer, “Revelation,” may be hit-or-miss depending on your taste, but it shows just how experimental the band was willing to get. Overall, not an album that blows me away, but certainly one that holds its place as a snapshot of the psychedelic era.
Didnt leave much of an impact, maybe I'm getting used to psychedelic rock. Last track was pretty cool but I wouldn't be seeking this out again. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
Inoffensive
Decent but better albums from Love.
Had heard of Love and listened to their Forever changes album which is apparently highly acclaimed, but well I don’t actually remember it but know it didn’t lead me to listen to any of their catalog, but here we are so here goes. That was hard work, maybe I somehow need to be living in California in 1966 off my face? To get this. Appears they predated the Doors so it isn’t a parody record, which was my first thought. It’s quite the epitome of California flower power and on a couple of listens when acclimatised it wasn’t as bad as initially thought, where to be fair I thought it was the worst record of the time I had heard. 3 Star
Revelation alone is enough
This was a pretty good album
Most second albums are awkward. Houmous & Chutney are probably the only band to have never released an awkward album. Even when they tried. Their second album ‘Awkward’ out sold Fats Domino by ten fold! 2.5 4/14 - Seven of Seven Is
Ummm it was alright but that 18 min end song really threw me off lol but it was pretty standard psychedelic rock not great, not the worst thing I've heard
There's nothing wrong with this album, but I didn't find much to distinguish it. Somewhere around two-thirds of the way through Side 2 I realized I'd kind of tuned it out and was letting it play in the background. Which isn't fair to the album, but also, it kind of says a lot about what the album is like. Or at least what my take on "jazz rock" is.
71/1001 :: Love - Da Capo Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 7 Listen before you die: Yeah Fav Songs: 7 and 7 is, Que Vida! Quite a mixed bag album from the 60s. Which made it a bit of a schizophrenic listen. My guess is these cats did a bunch of acid and maybe while making this album. That said, the songs are an interesting explosion 60s styles (folk, psych, hard rock). I probably won’t go back a million times but I would go back.
Ok tier
Didn't make a big impression, was fine
Listened Before? N Lots of psychedelic stuff on this list. I'm not complaining but I AM surprised. This one was not as good as some others, but better than others. I liked the really long jam sesh at the end, and Orange Skies is a banger. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Orange Skies
Fine 5.0. Last song that everyone hates is the best one.
My Flash On You is one of my favourite songs of that era, and there are some great songs here, too. But as an album this is a mess, veering from the extended R&B jam of Revelations to the looming essence of The Doors on some of these tracks. Brilliant in places (Seven And Seven Is), but patchy overall.
I liked their folky vibe.
Hmm, some interesting bits with harpsichord and flute, but the lead singer's voice is a tad on the annoying side. There's been better.
Good / different for this era of the mid - 60s. Not great. But good experimental type rock.
Me gustó? No se
Creo que estuvo bueno, pero raro
the first half of the album sounded pretty good. the last song, which according to wikipedia spanned the entire side two of the record, was an extended jam session basically. and if there’s one thing i really am not into, it is extended jam sessions. if side two was more like side one, i would probably give this a better score.
Groupe inconnu. =>3/5
1966 I'm aware of the respect this album gets, although I've never heard it in full before. It does sound dated, but not in a bad way and the tracks I'm familiar with came as a surprise to find them here, particular 'Seven and Seven Is', which is decent and sounds very influential for what was to come from stable mates The Doors. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit 🫳 Now I understand ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
Enjoyable though not something i usually listen to
mix between pink Floyd and Beach Boys..pretty good
I didn't hate it. The long song was long.
i love (no pun intended) this era of music and adore a lot of Love's contemporaries, and yet somehow their appeal seems to allude me a bit. most of this is pretty good, but mostly feels like a good, but unremarkable late 60s garage album. half of the album is dedicated to an 18 minute jam (which i guess was truncated from a 45 minute jam) that kind of is what it is, but isn't very interesting ultimately. there are some nuggets (no pun intended) on here ('7 and 7 Is' and 'Stephanie Knows Who') but most of it, to me ends up firmly in the "good, not great" camp. there are some interesting instruments used here that I wish were used more, mainly the flute and saxophone. arthur lee's songwriting often leaves me wanting more, and not in a good way. once again, i liked it, but i just wish it appealed to me more.
It's a mix of garage/psychedelic rock, some protopunk and occasional jazzy moments. It's super varied, but most of what they try works pretty well. The singer is pretty average, but has some great moments, like the "Come On!" from "Stephanie Knows Who". The singing on "Orange Skies" is pretty good too, very laid back. He's also excellent in "Seven and Seven Is", super energetic and powerful singing. The sax and flutes are very good, Cantrelli adds a lot to the tracks with jazzy passages that sound beautiful. The rest is pretty average, though the occasional harpsichord is a nice contribution, and the guitar shines from time to time, particularly during "Revelation". The good of the album is how they can move between genres and nail the sound pretty well, "Stephanie Knows Who", "Orange Skies" and "Seven and Seven Is" were by far the best songs here. I didn't like "!Que Vida!" (weird typo in the track name btw) or "The Castle". "Revelation" is nice, but a 19 minute track feels a bit self indulgent, even more so when the performances aren't THAT good here to justify the length.
Entertaining and chill, with just enough pep to keep interest. It's better psyche/soul than I thought it was going to be!
Favorite Track: Seven and Seven Is
'7 and 7 is' is great I don't have the patience for filler jams like 'Revelation'
Experimental, psych-y, didn't really get it until the last track "Revelation." I'll probably put that in a playlist, although I'm not sure which yet.
American 60s psych rock. Very theatrical.
Alright pretty fun album. Orange Skies and She Comes in Colors were good, had that distinctive 60's sound. Revelation was great with some really enjoyable instrumental bits and solos throughout.
Three stars because Seven and Seven Is is great. The rest, meh.
Harpsichordy, whimsical, wafty. Not offensive, can definitely see how it has influenced other bands in the 60s and afterwards, and also how the music was working towards "Forever Changes" too.
A little too 60s for me, but some cool ideas in there. "7 and 7 Is" easily the best track.
Some good bits in there, but overall the voice of the lead singer will keep me from listening to more from this band.
This feels the most generic classic rock album, nothing outstanding nothing awful. Perfectly fine to listen to but just nothing that grabs you at all.
Worst opening song award goes to Seriously bad vocals in the first song, but even it had good instruments
i really enjoyed this, but i found the last song to be way too long for no reason, brought my 4 star rating down to a 3
Rating: 5.5/10 Mildly enjoyable jam band.
Made me imagine walking down the King’s Road Chelsea plotting an alternative counterculture lifestyle. If this record was supposed to do that then well done. As Tony Blackburn keeps reminding us every Saturday morning - The 1960’s best decade ever. 3/5 9/7/25
Upon closer listening I'm sure I could come to enjoy this more, but on first listen it's pretty good but not incredible. 6/10
I liked this one. I was dreading the 18-minute long song that is all of Side 2, but that was probably my favorite track. It had some George Thorogood (One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer) and Doors (Roadhouse) vibes that I dug. And, since it predates both of those tracks, they get bonus points for doing it first.
It’s great, it’s kinda jazzy but it’s all over the place, and it preps you for the next even better Love album, Forever Changes. Now THAT album has one of the best songs ever written ‘alone again or’ but this is definitely not that. Still good in its own right but I can see how it’s pretty polarizing.
Interesting, psychedelic and trippy with a few holding some potential in here. Nothing to write home about, but was an interesting listen. Low 3.
60’s rock
Maargoed. Ik hou hem simpel vandaag. 36 minuten relatief leuke muziek. Gewoon 3 sterren.
Very dated sounding, but still had something to offer musically.
This is a mixed bag, but a good one. Some groovy baroque pop stuff, some jazz flourishes, even a garage rock flavor here and there. Honestly surprised I didn’t hate the 19-minute closer. It kind of jams, in a laid-back kind of way. Enjoyable, even if nothing totally blew my mind. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Orange Skies - Seven and Seven Is - She Comes In Colors
The last track on this album was delightful. The rest was okay!
Reminds me of Iron Butterfly. Nice but not too exciting
Really nice listen.
6.5/10 This had some excellent moments but was some way off the quality of the classic album that followed it. Kind of crazy that this was recorded about 6 months before Forever Changes. The final song, a not-great jam session, shouldn’t be anywhere near an album Best: She Comes in Colors
TAKE THE BROWN ACID I REPEAT TAKE THE BROWN ACID YEAH DO IT
It’s like a worse version of The Rolling Stones, The Doors, and Jefferson Airplane all in one. That being said, all but the last track (Revelation) were pretty good. Just not as good as the three other bands I listed. Revelation sounded like a wanna be Iron Butterfly in the means of stretching out the track but yet was just non sensical
Perfectly harmless, somewhat enjoyed the first couple but very rinse & repeat
Although I would love to rate this album higher, it would do a disservice to other albums that I have put into this range. The first half has almost nothign to write home about, but the last tune, Revelation is exquisitely long which as we well know, is one of my favorite song qualities. Psychadelic, weird, messy, and clocking in at 18 minutes and 59 seconds long, I loved this piece. 5/10
When I was in England town The rain fell right down Ahhh, the rainy town of England.
This band has some range
Interesting listen but no real standouts. No real reason to come back.
6/10
ja soa random 60s record halt wieder. gut aber nix besonderes
Little weird, but not bad
Just strange enough to keep my attention most of the time, but I'll probably still forget about it quite quickly and I don't think I will feel a need to revisit this Standouts She Comes In Colors Revelation 3/5
Love altijd lekker. Proto punk! Deze plaat niet zo op mijn radar. Verbaasde me over de gelijkenissen met the Doors, ook de stem van Arthur Lee. Alleen rockt Love zonder hammond-orgel. 6,5/10 Highlights Seven and Seven Is Revelation
++: ¡Que Vida!, 7 and 7 Is, Revelation +: Stephanie Knows Who, Orange Skies +-: The Castle, She Comes in Colors 7,0/10
Jazz Rock before the genre is defined. Designed with two different sides it stands behind its following album Forever Change.
3.5/5
revelation was just ridiculous, where did that go and come from. I mean none of this was bad just weird and like it didn't go together or really go anywhere. Blip in the universe, don't hate it but probably never need to experience that again.
This is an interesting potpourri of 60's psychedelic rock. Revelation starts and ends with a harpsichord. In between some stuff happens for about 20 minutes.
Lovely psychedelic rock from the heart of the 60’s. I do Love this particular genre and it’s clear that they inspired some big bands moving forward. For example, this album feels like the inspiration in structure for Pink Floyd’s Meddle. Side one contains easy, short and to the point songs, while side two is one loooong track that challenges rock music at that point. Not much to say about the quality other than it is good, if not necessarily always great. Orange Skies is a delight. Revelation (the long track) starts off on fire and with good intentions but just goes on for WAAAAYYY too long, middling in the middle. The Doors did this on some of their songs as well. I’m sure if I had a VW van and no job, this track/album would be my entire identity.
This was pretty good. I didn’t even mind the long song at the end, it was a vibe and had enough change-ups to make it interesting. Nice variety throughout the album too. It didn’t wow me but was a perfectly pleasant listen.
Straight mid for me
It’s fine I guess, mostly pretty generic 60’s psychedelic rock but with good drumming. It clicked for me with the penultimate two songs but then went onto an almost 20 minute song which was actually pretty good but also just not at some parts. Not nearly as good as forever changes. Overall 5/10.
certainly funky. i don't hate it by any means but i likely will not return to it any time soon.
It's a nice album, I like it, but the last track goes on for tooooo looooong.
A fine time. Nothing extra exciting but still okay
It was an experience. I will have to listen again to really appreciate it but very interesting nonetheless.
Glad something like this is thrown into this collection, need some dusty barroom earthy grounding every once in awhile
- some sick bass playing - i feel like objectively i like it but it’s not fully me - the very clear enunciation by the singer is interesting for jazz rock - i love the start of revelation. the song is 18 minutes long however - sounds like a local band some of my friends are in!
Another first time listen after hearing bits and pieces from Love over the years. I do enjoy this era of music for sure, but to be honest there wasn't a ton here to really grab me and leave an impact. I figured there would be a bit more psychedelic influence, but instead I'd say the album is a varied mix of mid-60's garage/psyche rock with a tinge of exotica influence/vibe. The biggest standout to me was the singer's voice, which is very strong, but at times almost feels out of place for the era, for a reason I can't quite put my finger on. I listened to a few other Love albums after this one, and while I feel like there was more on other albums that grabbed me, overall I'm not a huge fan of the sound, and definitely prefer more full blown psyche acts of the era. The B-side of Da Capo was a bit long and plodding, without too much excitement to justify its length, which definitely isn't helping my opinion of this album. I'm sure I'll revisit this band and album, but there are plenty of other acts from mid-late 60's who interest me a lot more than Love has thus far.
Album is kinda all over the place. Some songs are fantastic and some are stylistically different and out of place
Each song sounds very different which I think was cool.
I hate 20 minute songs
Possibly a grower. Decent psychedelic rock. Not as good as Forever Changes, obviously.
7 and 7 is great! First half decent. Last song self indulgent. Would listen to first half again but probably wouldn’t get stuck in my head beyond the hit.
Biased cos I love psych rock - the 19 minute jam at the end was fun, just felt like it wasn’t that technically well played. That said I did enjoy it
And I wish it was the sixties I wish I could be happy I wish, I wish I wish that something would happen
3 estrelas . só pela curiosidade
pretty good, but why is there a song that is 18 minutes? no
Not bad. Something I've never heard before. It has all the good trappings of the mid to late 60's quirky folk rock, adding some hard bark here and there. Unusual and unique. I don't dislike, but not sure I like enough to pursue further. This gets a 3 and thanks for the new old music.
Feels like LOVE was either going to be a giant band, or a one hit wonder. And we know which one happened.
I feel like this could be higher for me if there were a few songs that were a little less "bubblegum". The songs that worked for me were really great, and tbh I loved the really long ending track. It was just a fun journey listening to the different solos and meandering bluesy song. I want to like it more and feel like I should since I tend to like he 60s sound but I find I can't justify above a 3 star.
I guess I appreciate this album, but it's all over the place. I can see how certain aspects would be influential, but it's more the overall approach and the willingness to go more daring and delving into jazz than it is an actual great execution of those ideas. And the 19 minute jam to end the album doesn't make for a super listenable experience. Still, a bunch of great musicians that do some interesting things and make an album that uniquely theirs. I can't hate on it, it just doesn't reach the heights of a lot of its contemporaries.
Completely unknown band. Good music. Fair album.
A surprising array of genres, Love developed something the rest of music wasn't quite ready for: punk. It was a single song mixed into the new "jazz rock" idea they seemingly put together at a time when Fusion was fledgling. While there are no hits, this 1967 album laid a lot of foundation for future artists to take even bigger steps.
Unique but very “60s” at the same time. I liked the instrumentation with the flute I heard I few times and everything else going on, it sounded cool and unique. I’m not sure if I would have put this on this list though because it’s doesn’t have anything super special going on apart from the wide variety of instruments. Overall good album but nothing super special. Rating: Good (Strong ☆☆☆) Favorite Tracks: Orange Skies, !Que Vida!, and Revelation (interesting track)
This is pretty cool.
Second album by Love which I’ve listened to. I quite enjoyed them although the 18 min track went on far too long
Just some guys that made some good music. I didn't feel the love, the band name is misleading.
old school hipster camp rock with a mild easy listening hippie bent. feels like they're parodying something, but I'm not in on the joke. in one ear, out the other...
It's a grand album, like. But why there would be another album by Love on this list besides Forever Changes is a mystery.
I enjoyed this one a decent bit. I not sure there’s anything in particular that really stands out about it. Psychedelic rock often loses me when it veers a little too far to just “jamming”, but I felt pretty engaged while listening. Overall, pretty solid.
I’ve never even heard of the Doors, Your Honour
I've listened to some Love before. Really like 7 and 7 is. Overall was pretty interesting.
Almost a 4. I really like the opening track, but ending track is way too long
Revelation (the longer closing track) reminded me of Going Home by The Rolling Stones
Side A is a solid collection of psychedelic ditties, although not nearly as good as anything on Forever Changes. Side B is clearly a waste intended to piss off the record company.
Good music from 1968. But I feel like the 'side b' 18 minute jam is mostly filler.
