Reviews (page 7 of 7)
I can't give this a one-star review because the talent of Mr. Piazzolla and his companions is undeniable. But I also can't give it any higher than a two-star review because it was also completely unenjoyable. I can't imagine any reason why I'd want to listen to an hour of elevator music. Hard pass.
en osais sanoa tätä tangoksi? mutta ksylofoni hymyilyttää. Yann Tiersen -viba, tai siis Tierdenissä Piazzolla-viba. eipä tule uudelleen kuunneltua
Talent and complexity but nothing of interest to me.
I enjoyed having this on as background music, but I can't judge it very well as i'm not really a fan of the genre and don't know much about it. I did get a little bit tired of it by the end and don't think i'll ever come back to it so can't quite give it a 3
I generally love discovering little gems like this one; new-to-me music is part of the joy of this project. Sadly I did not enjoy this album as much as I hoped to based on the description. It had some very pretty parts, in Laura's Dream for example, but in general I found the whole album didn't really engage me. I listen twice to make sure I hadn't gotten distracted the first time through, and no, I don't dislike it, but there's just not much in there that excites me. Even though I wanted it to. I give The New Tango a solid "fine", 2.5 stars.
Lively latin fare, but it wasn't really exciting enough for me to get into
Meh 2
Oh perfect, just what I need to hear. A minimalist classical album in the style and form of tango... classified as "new tango." I can hear influences from 70s folk and pop music (maybe just the classic vibraphone abuse), and it's a bit accessible but mostly boring with some slight remarkable variations. Beautiful here and chaotic there. Favorites: Nuevo Tango, Laura's Dream
Sounds like music in an old animated film. Didn't hold my attention and became background noise.
Cultura general
Once the second song starts it's clear the musicians know how to play and if there's any doubt, the title track reinforces the point. I guess I'm glad someone had the skills to make this and I'm sure there are those who really like the music. For me, I quite like it if one song featuring a vibraphone is mixed into an album but a whole album of it is a little hard to listen to.
Today I learned that a bandoneon isn't an accordion. I was never a big fan of Piazzolla's brand of tango / jazz and although Gary Burton adds some welcome variety, this album didn't resonate with me.
??? Roll on tomorrow.... Cover art 0/5
Muzak.
This is a joke, right? Why am I listening to this? I'm sure it's great if you like the tango, but I'm really not interested at all.
Interesting and weird - if not my style.
Not really my thing
Suuuuuuper cheesy. I have to check my cholesterol after listening to this.
I don’t like this. One star…
Sounds like i was scrolling through doorbell chimes
No disrespect to the artists, I’m sure they’re good at what they do, but this just isn’t for me, I ant even say it’s good background music. Sorry but it’s a 1
I had to turn this off whilst I was driving as it almost put me to sleep which would’ve been very unsafe Just not my thing 1.5
One of the most boring albums on this.
The worst kind of album you can be, boring. Left no impact, felt no emotion. It was just on and then it wasn't
Not something I'd listen to again. This quickly blended into the background for me.
De klantendienst weigerde op te nemen. #Wachtmuziek
Nah
This plink plonk music is definitely not for me.
i feel like I'm waiting for something but i don't know for what
This was like stressful elevator music to me
What a load of old bollocks. Top 1001 my arse.
I found this relentlessly boring
Couldn’t get very interested in this!
Te veel xylofoon...
Tedious. The entire album sounded like a Tom & Jerry soundtrack.
Boooooooooo
When I hear the word tango, it brings to mind a lively dance. But when I heard the album the New Tango, all I could picture was a stuffy Victorian ballroom dance. Not really my idea of a good time, especially for something that is by name supposed to feel new. This album probably was doomed for me from the start. A genre I don’t know much about, music I don’t particularly like, made as a live recording, and running long. Still, I don’t know what makes this something I would need to hear. Definitely not coming back to this one. Overall: 1/5
Straight elevator music. I was so bored the whole time.
Some banger menu music in this album
Big departure from my norm and what this site recommends. It is a Vibraphone heavy tango concert. I would have to give it a couple of passes to understand what's going on but didn't really gel for me on a first listen.
1. milonga - 1.5 2. vibra -1 3. italy -1 4. tango -1 5. dream - 1.5 6. operation - 1 7. muerta - 1.5
Classical. Real mix of instruments but not my bag at all, very boring and a slog to get through
Sometimes talent isn’t enough
I just couldn't make it through the whole thing. While they're clearly very talented. It's just not for me.
this is well made but I am going crazy listening to it. It's too long for what it is and goes between boring and annoying. 3/10 I felt relief finishing it
What am I supposed to do with this? A foxtrot?
This album and its instrumental nonsense actually made me want to jump out of the window this afternoon. I could feel my blood pressure rising with each track. I fucking hated this album.
Most of it sound like a soundtrack to a french art film or something (just guessing, never seen one). Some is frantic, some sounds like doom jazz and allot of tracks are way too long. If i heard this in high school i might have been able to maybe like some of it but now i have too short attention span to process it.
Tango doesn't agree with my circulatory system. It gives me a feeling of being on the verge of a heart attack, or, at the very least, severe cardiac arrhythmia.
Just didn't really do anything for me.
Just awful
I mean, it is what it is. Not offensive to the ears, but there was no way I was listening to all of it. If I’m being objective, it’s a 2. But it will almost certainly be in my bottom 20% of this list, so I’ll rate it accordingly.
No
Anhedonic
Unlistenable. This might be brilliant if you like this sort of thing, for me it was an hour and long tom and jerry soundtrack
This Album is the reason that a zero score should be a option
i am so comfortable admitting this is never going to be my thing
Haunting. Felt like I was trapped in a fairground, but not in a good way.

Allez, hop, on remet le couvert car le grand livre a parlé, et aujourd'hui, la sentence est tombée : Astor Piazzolla & Gary Burton, "The New Tango".
I miss the french lady whispering “Melody Nelson” to me.
Why was this included?
I couldn't do it. You give me Live Grateful Dead yesterday and then hit me with this. Nope. 1/5
It’s just fancy background music. No lyrics or anything but not horrible background…
Horrific waste of time. Shame as had just seen Evita and would have quite enjoyed some Tango!
The fact that this album does not have a Wikipedia entry and all but one of the songs have less than 60,000 listens on Spotify should tell you how "essential" it is. Most of the songs sound like music for children's cartoons and the rest are flat-out boring. I would really like to hear Mr. Dimery's justification for including it and wasting our valuable time.
A xylophone and a squeezebox. This must be the inspiration for the Marble Machine guy. I'm not sure what I just listened to, but I think I'm going to put it on in the car when I feel like annoying my wife. Also, Final Fantasy wants its music back.
this filtered me insanely hard
While The New Tango is undeniably impressive in its ambition and the fact that it's a live performance, I found the overall listening experience deeply underwhelming. Despite the skill of the musicians involved, the music came across as meandering and lacked the emotional resonance I was hoping for. To me, it felt like an hour-long stretch of uninspired background music. Unfortunately, I struggled to find anything redeeming in the album. None of the tracks stood out in a positive way, and I couldn't select a favourite song. In fact, every track left me disappointed, and I don't plan on revisiting this album. Even the album artwork failed to leave a good impression—it felt as uninspired as the music itself.
yeah idk about that one
Pleasant background fluff, but dollars to donuts I ain’t spinning this one again.
Hate it, violin was okay but the xylophone was annoying! Not for me!
I’m be of the first albums I could not finish
No idea whether there's any technical merit to this, but I know listening to it for an hour would drive me insane.
No.
Mee
Not for me 1/5
I...have no idea what this is. But it makes me anxious.
oh great, another live album..... I did not like this.
Impressive? Possibly, but ultimately dull. I definitely debate its inclusion on 1001 Albums You Must Hear.
Yikes. Hated it
Odd
exhausting
Lift music
It was like listening to the music from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood sometimes. Other times it reminded me of 80’s video game music. I didn’t hate it and I didn’t love it. I tolerated some of it. In the immortal words of so many before me, meh
The word tango always conjures up images of Marlon Brando and butter. More latterly however I can say that as a resident living in HX3 England this album will definitely be the last tango I hear in Halifax. 1/5 18/2/25
This just isn't for me at all so I'm giving it a 1, but it wasn't actively dreadful to have on, there were some fun wee bits in it
I'm sure it's great if you know what the hell is going on, but this is really not for me.
Couldn't get into it. Almost felt on the edge of being pleasant.
Hate
I did not enjoy listening to this. Maybe someone else would, but there are no vibes here.
These little bells are making me craaaaaazy
Did nothing for me
Didn’t finish it.
Liked this
Elavator/hold music
No
Good, but not for me.
Ok, if I was having a polka party. Pass
Absolutely not
I must admit I drifted off after a track or two. Was a bit like when Late Junction finishes on Radio 3 and it goes into the next programme if I forget to turn it off. I guess I have yet to be tangoed - not for me.
Terrible. Would give zero stars if possible.
Boring stuff
Shite

Actual nonsense
No.
It's a lil too old-timey for me but not bad background music. Some of these tracks are anxiety-inducing though
Tha fuck was this?
Wasn’t my to my taste
I was quite keen to play this, not being familiar with tango, let alone new tango, but really it left me cold. The vibraphone makes it all sound a bit like elevator music. The Montreux audience seemed to love it though.
Babe, wake up!! 🗣️🗣️ Rich white people ruined jazz
Atrocious. Didn’t enjoy one song. Utterly unexciting. Masterfully boring and uniquely unoriginal. It’s my opinion that the musicians couldn’t hear the other members and had to hope they were playing together. Not sure who this is for really. 1/5
A bit too jazz
Not for me.
generic elevator music
Sorry, no thanks. 1 star or F for me.
generally horrible.
I get how part of this project is to get you to listen to things you would otherwise not. But this is basically like a soundtrack to a very long children's TV show from the 1970s.
Skickliga musiker men meningslös musik.
Some of this sounds like the soundtrack to glamorous tango nights of yesteryear, while other sections are straight out of a vintage English steam fair, with many messy movements in between. Overall, not an easy listen and induces slightly stressful feelings. Wanted it to end.
As a casual listener I can't evaluate the mastery, I can only evaluate the excitement
Talented and uninteresting.
Very bad
Pointless 1.3
Fattar inte grejen
Polyphonic ringtones 😴😴😴
Something you’d hear while being on hold
No thanks
Sounds very pretty as background music (while working) but the album feels out of scope.
Idk a very boring album, felt like nothing was going on
2 out of 7 tracks enjoyable
I was totally underwhelmed.
If I ever feel the need for xylophone jazz then I'll remember this. But that's never going to happen and this was the first album I have up on.
Didn’t expect this album today but here we are. Musical albums can me hit or miss tbh Nah didn’t enjoy this at all it just bored me, I didn’t finish it either. Meh. Sorry.
Interesting but ultimately disjointed. Not terribly accessible.
Jazz mit klassischen Instrumenten. Keine gute Idee.
Tango music. Much like the jazz music, nice background music but it didn't really pique my interest. The last three songs are the best. Would not listen again.
meh. Its like bad theme music. I dont know what its the theme to, but its boring AF. 1/5
Sounds like a damn cartoon soundtrack.
Duuuuuuuuuurt
Not really my thing to be honest (19%)
Nope, not for me.
Astor Piazzolla's 'The New Tango' is like a modern twist on an old dance – kinda cool, but a bit too edgy for my vibe. While the fusion of jazz and classic tango is interesting, it's just not my jam. 🎵 1/5
Tango had a threesome with Jazz and Classical giving birth to Nuevo Tango. Boring.
you know when you've been tangoed. i prefer the original recipe with maximum sugar as teeth are for losers.
This one was not for me at all!
Just riled me up right good this one. I did not need to hear this really... I guess they are talented musicians but honestly imagine sitting through that live. No thanks. Well repetitive and not in a good way
Best bits was the clapping
Imagine a Billy Joel album, with a bit more oomph instrumentally, without the singing, add a bit of vibraphone, and some applause at more or less random intervals. Like spending an hour on hold, waiting for a fancy Argentinean boutique hotel to tell you that they've got no reservations within three weeks of the time that you'll be in Buenos Aires. 1/5.
Not my kind of music.
I think I prefer the old tango. Glockenspiel solos were never my thing.
I think the soft recording quality inhibited the prescribed jazz magic that this recording was supposed to reveal. It did not grab me and pull me in as an outsider, which I think makes a remarkable album. I wanted to be seduced by layers of jazz improvisation and synergy, but left wondering why this album just be listened to before the end.
Pleasant but lacked some spice. No horns. Would not listen again.
Way out!!!
Fine, but very light. The feature instrument is something like vibes and just has a very smooth, flat sound with little attack. It’s an odd choice of instrument to feature on an all-instrumental album, because it leads to an extremely low-energy, slapped-out vibe that, there’s no way around it, sounds like elevator music / being put on hold. Nothing wrong with what they’re doing, just anything that’s this close to 0/10 on excitement factor isn’t for me.
