The New Tango

As I'm fighting off a cold, I laid down to take an afternoon nap and I put on some music to help me rest. The New Tango was the perfect music to relax to, with the soothing sound of vibraphone and accordian. It was mellow and chill and I appreciate the musicianship and I surprisingly enjoyed it. It's all about the mood and if I listened to get while working it might not have gotten my attention so much. Not the genre of music I normally listen to, but it's sometimes good to listen outside your comfort zone and this was comforting, at least at that moment.

Perfectly fine background music. Listened to this a few days before Halloween, so I enjoyed the sort of spooky sounding stuff.

Not exactly sure what I just listened to. They used just about every instrument under the sun, especially violins and xylophone. There wasn't really a ton of structure, it felt like mostly ambience or short, jazzy ideas that went all over the place. Wasn't really my cup of tea but I can respect it.

Gonna be useful for the next time I have to tiptoe out of a bank with a burlap sack of money on my back. Hope I don't slip on a banana peel, boy would that stink. Has some really cool moments and I like when they explore more avantgarde sounds, but the whole thing is just waaaayy too long for me to give it anything more than a 3/5.

My standard for 'world' records has been 3 Stars. They're all pretty good, but I've got very little to compare them to. This is a 4 star record great jazz tunes, great implementation of instruments, and just a wonderful vision brought to life.

Tango music. Much like the jazz music, nice background music but it didn't really pique my interest. The last three songs are the best. Would not listen again.

This is one of the more boring offerings made by the album generator. You Know what becomes really annoying upon extended listen? A vibraphone, which is heavily featured (Gary Burton is apparently a renouned vibraphonist) on this record. Astor Piazzolla's bandoneon playing makes it feel like you are in a French/Italian cafe. This whole album is call center hold music or elevator music. It was so hard to stay focused on this one. I caught myself drifting off into a daydream several times throughout. 58 minutes is quite a long time to endure this "new tango/jazz hybrid". It wasn't necessarily bad, just really boring. I don't think I would listen again. On a dreary fall day, all this did was lull me into a trance, and almost put me to sleep. Favourite song: La Muerta Del Angel (one of the shorter songs on the record) Least favourite songs: I don't know, the whole album just ran together so bad, I couldn't really differentiate good from bad. 2/5

This is not your grandparents' tango, and who knew that some accordion looking instrument could create music so smooth and cool. I'm sure it helps that Burton's vibraphone chops show through it's Piazzolla's arrangements that ties it all together. Although a bit same at times, this is very pleasant stuff, thank you.

The new tango, van Astor Piazzolla en Gary Burton, 1987 (om misverstanden te voorkomen over welk album deze recensie eigenlijk gaat). Op zich sta ik heel erg open voor dit soort muziek. Argentijnse tango op de bandoneon, een mooi sfeervol potje wereldmuziek zou je denken. Maar Astor is vandaag op de experimentele toer. Weinig melancholie, zelfs weinig oprechte vrolijkheid, vooral veel rammen en veel noten op de plaat proppen. En dan werkt het op de zenuwen. Anders dan ik verwacht had een laag cijfer voor dit album.

Ik schrok even. Iets wat in de jaren 80 'moderne' tango wordt genoemd. Komen er dan synths bij, of zo? Kazige zang van Rick Astley? Dat valt allemaal wel mee. Het blijft bij de klassieke instrumenten. Het moderne zal zitten in het af en en toe stacato gepingel en de dwarse uithalen van de strijker. Het komt dan soms wat over als filmmuziek en wordt soms wat neurotisch.

Bij het eerste nummer hoor ik dus Hazes bij het draaiorgel in de Jordaan. Het is allemaal interessant om kennis van te nemen, maar absoluut NSFW. Niet dat muziek dat per se moet zijn, maar het geeft wel een beetje aan dat dit muziek voor in de (snobistische) marge is. Voor de elitaire kunstliefhebber, die graag laat merken hoe ontwikkeld zijn of haar smaak is. Maxima pinkt er nog een traantje bij weg, oftewel smartlappenmuziek voor de elite. En dat ligt dus verrekte dicht bij plat volksvermaak als Hazes.

Lovely lovely and lovely - it’s mind blowing love musicianship - perfect, even - with a twist on tango and incredible arrangement of instrument - to make this a rousing climaxing record. Not always going to be in the mood for this but it’s excellent.

Nope, not for me.

Today shows another artist I’ve not heard of before. Almost every live album I’ve had so far had really impressed me, so I’ve learnt to be optimistic. Apple Music says the genre is “raíces”. I have the slightest cure what that means. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Milonga Is Coming I never thought I’d find myself being so transfixed by a xylophone, but I’ve yet again find myself to be proven wrong. To me, this felt like something I might come across on Classic FM, so I guess raíces might mean singing like that. Oftentimes, I would forget that I was listening to a live album until the crowd started clapping and cheering after a song. Everything is played and recorded quite perfectly. I did did that no sounds quite beat the opening track in terms of how much I enjoyed it, but overall this was a very nice experience.

Well, they accomplished exactly what it says on the cover - tangos in the 80s New Age style, complete with a xylophone, so it sounds as if there was a fairy from Argentina in the Nutcracker. However, with the whole album being instrumental and in a consistent style, it does get repetitive at times.

I agree with the elevator guy, there’s clearly plenty of artistry and mastery at play here but none of it is thrilling or the least bit engaging at all

Tango. Algo disonante

I think they are talented musicians that have crafted unique music. However I found it underwhelming and boring to listen to. Nothing exciting really drew me in. I didn’t hate it but it’s not something that I’d regularly choose to listen to.

So worth knowing, and there should be more room for the likes of tango (not to mention string quartets) in this esteemed list There is real artistry here and GB's vibing keep some litheness here, in a genre that can tend to the overly rigid and occasionally turgid. One can't speak so the virtuosity exactly here, having limited genre knowledge to be honest, but certainly one knows what one likes – and finds this most likable indeed One remembers fondly one's nuevo tango's phase and feels inspired to return to it (and not just for sentimental reasons) after giving this a few listens.

I wonder why this out of Astor Piazzolla's 2 million albums was picked? That's not too dispute his or the album's greatness, I wonder if there was an element that Astor needed to be picked, but being so prolific he had to be picked, after all he'd be in a list of 'Top 501 artists', but picking an album to include? Probably a lucky pick. Anyway, enjoy, download, then tell me in 5 years if the album stands out? He does for sure, but the album?

It’s tango, okay, sure. It’s not making me feel the happy tingly things I expect from the tango though. More bland than sultry, so it’s a bit of a letdown.

Per Wikipedia bio: [Piazzolla’s] disappointment of being forbidden [by his father] to join the tour proved to be fortunate, as it was on this tour in 1935 that Gardel and his entire orchestra perished in a plane crash. I’ll remember this anecdote when needing to discourage someone from following their dreams.

Not my kind of thing, although it sounds like the audience absolutely loved it! I'm not even sure what genre to put it in - jazz, classical, pure tango, something else - never mind what rating to give it. Pleasant enough, even if I don't really get it.

OK jazz music, yes, but I got the point after one track. Yet again, I fail to see the special spice that merited this particular album's inclusion here above others (but then again, I should be used to that by now). Is it the token xylophone/accordion this list needed ever so badly?

Some of the tracks were okay....those that featured the vibraphone. The free-form tracks with what sounded like a damn accordion? Give me a break.

I think the lack of willingness to wrestle with this album on its own merits attests to something disturbing about the way we consume art. This is the first album sent to me by this program which does not fall into cliched song structures and 2-4 minute songs. It’s very texturally, harmonically, and structurally interesting. These tracks take me on a journey. I don’t listen to the first 30 seconds and think “okay so that’s basically it”. I’m a fan of classical music, so more free form gobbledygook bullshit nonsense strikes a chord with me. To me this is capital M “Music”, a genuine expression of artistic intent not derived solely from a capitalistic drive for profit. This album was not made to satisfy a quota or buy a yacht. It is genuine art that attempts something unique that is worth at least contending with. It is imbued with history - or, more accurately, historicity - and progression, evading the typical static limbo which plagued conventional pop. Also I shit on my own balls and now I’m pissed off. Fuck McDonald’s. It’s like communion, except instead of turning into the blood and body of Christ inside you, it transmogrifies into sludge diarrhea.

This album was interesting if not a bit long. I'm not familiar with tango, but did notice that there were classical and jazz forms incorporated into the tango. I really enjoyed the use of marimba throughout as well as the bandoneon, an instrument that I was not previously familiar with. After some reading, it appears that Astor Piazzolla was the father of the new tango as featured on this album.

There is only so much song you can have with a xylephone. The true tragedy of this album, on top of it being a live album, is there is Barely any accordion as I see on the album cover. Not sure why but this was a bummer album. The music was fine, this just felt like the kind of record you see in the 50cent bin.

What an oddball album. A quirky instrumentalist album, but it happens to be live. You wouldn't know it if not for the applause after each song. I definitely enjoyed a few tracks, many of these are long musical odysseys, just played with a xylophone and other oft-forgotten old timey feeling instruments. Not mad at this at all. Favorite tracks: Vibraphonissimo, Little Italy, Laura's Dream. Album art: Purely descriptive, an explanation of what the album is and a picture of the two namesake guys I guess. Someone pointed out to me that Jazz is a medium that can only be performed live. I disagree. They can still record it in a studio. This is interesting. Reminds me of North by Northwest. But live albums don't belong on this list.

This one was not for me at all!

My excitement turned to despair by the end of the third track. It all sounded very similar to me and I became worried that my nights would never turn back to day. Worried that the chill I began to feel would leave me colder and ill. By the fifth track, I was convinced I would never love again, that the food I'd eat would be tasteless and soft. And, by the end of the album, I was no longer albe to get out of bed or feel my legs. And when I opened my eyes it was true... Somehow I have been transported into a stop action Tim Burton movie and am unable to escape. This is my letter in a bottle... send help..... SOS. SOS. SOS.

An interesting mix of classical, jazz, and tango makes Astor Piazzolla & Gary Burton’s “The New Tango” an unusual addition to the list. I found it pretty intriguing, as someone who doesn’t seek out any of those genres. It’s frequently lovely, sometimes rousing and exciting, but at times suffers from too much bandoneon (the accordion-like instrument).

Probably deserves to be on the list, but it’s not my thing. It was inoffensive until the end of Operation Tango and most of La Muerta del Angel.

Not my cup of tea

I listened to this on earphones and sometimes it felt like the xylaphone was inside my head, like as if it ran between my two ears and I could feel inside my head someone playing it. A weird feeling but not unpleasant.

Just riled me up right good this one. I did not need to hear this really... I guess they are talented musicians but honestly imagine sitting through that live. No thanks. Well repetitive and not in a good way

I find it hard to rate because it's not my kind of thing but I do like having the odd more classical thing pop up on here. Don't really have any strong opinions on it to be honest.

Love a good jazz adjacent album

Not my thing Pleasant enough, nothing special IMO

I am sure that they are masters of their arts, but I found this unbearable. To the extent that I was mentally exercising the art of seppuku.

This was very enjoyable. Soft around the edges, the vibraphone is such a mellow but precise instrument in this arrangement. I did a quick look up to determine the instrumentation included here — sparse — piano, violin, bass, piano, guitar, vibraphone, and bandoneon, which is like an accordion (had to look that one up). And, as I suspected, these guys only had three rehearsals before performing this. That's amazing. The intricacies and tightness of the players is incredible, I was marveling at the precision throughout.

Fantastic performances. Not the kind of thing I would have chosen to listen to—and it really wasn't what I wanted to hear today—but it kind of won me over. Sounds like the opening theme song for a PBS quirky mystery. So that's cool. I don't, however, think it's something I'm going to be reaching for again. This is one of those albums where rating it seems silly. Glad I heard it. Glad it's on the list. They're amazing performers. Three stars, just 'cause?

This album is obviously not in my wheelhouse, but I enjoyed listening to this. I really appreciated the dramatic feel, complexity, and occasional odd-meter. Even though I’m not a fan of Argentinian accordion, I recognised the talent that went into this performance.

Sounds like a Wes Anderson car chase. And not in a bad way.

It took a year and a half from when I got this album until I finally listened all the way trough. Today was the day, rainy and relaxing, cold, and feels like we skipped straight from Summer to Winter. This album was perfect for this day, very cool and relaxing but also very interesting. This is a genre I do not regularly listen to, so it was very nice to hear the different instruments working so well together, for example a part where the piano and I think a vibraphone complimented each other so well. Enjoyed this album very much, it was worth the wait but also there is a reason it took 1.5 years for me to listen to it, it isn't my everyday listen.

Another good example of not judging by the cover. I really did expect to hate this but Piazzolla and Burton won me over. There’s good moments of frantic anxious energy on this and others of calming

Relative to the combo and venue, the set plays much like a Romantic string concert. Each piece integrates tango with other musics; The band plays precisely, with just a few explosions of noise. This album is one to sit with.

The New Tango is like a score from a film I've never seen and don't care to. It's in the very average but no thanks bucket, 2.

Imagine a Billy Joel album, with a bit more oomph instrumentally, without the singing, add a bit of vibraphone, and some applause at more or less random intervals. Like spending an hour on hold, waiting for a fancy Argentinean boutique hotel to tell you that they've got no reservations within three weeks of the time that you'll be in Buenos Aires. 1/5.

Increíble la reinterpretación

A live album that you'd never know was live if not for the occasional round of applause, the sound is so sharp and the instruments are played perfectly. Very unique music and unconventional instruments used but it was a pleasant listen. It all sort of blends together, one song doesn't particularly stand out, but that's not a point against it as the album as a whole was nice to have on as I worked. I'd listen to this again or play it during a fancy dinner party.

I must admit that were someone to have described this album to me or if I read a quick description of it, I would have been reluctant to give it a listen. But it works. It works really, really well. I hear an inventive and creative use of various instruments coming together in compositions and performances with nuance, energy, playfulness, depth, darkness, and some truly incredible skills. Never had I dreamed that the combination of Accordion and Vibraphone would be enthralling. This album is 58 minutes of purse musical virtuosity, and it reminds me that there are still so many areas of music I have yet to uncover. Fav Tracks: Best enjoyed in it's entirety

You can't really go wrong when you bring together the bandoneon and the vibraphone for some tango music. It was sometimes a little too "new" for me, making me think that I haven't had the opportunity to listen to enough traditional tango music first, but I definitely appreciate this musical exploration.

I am not familiar enough with the tango to know what is "new" or not or "tango" or not about the tracks on this album. Lots of energy, that's for sure!!

Absolutely invigorating. I feel vigorous!

You had me at vibraphone. Then once I figured out what a bandoneon was you had me there too. This sounded much more modern and varied than I expected from a tango album. The songs progressed through different moods and emotions that I found very compelling. Again I am thankful for being introduced to another album that I would likely never have encountered but for this project.

Surprisingly great

A bandoneon and vibraphone supergroup - AT LAST! To be fair, the collaboration was probably inevitable, because after all… it takes two to tango. There were some good vibes here and there but the band did go on and on a bit.

Strange album to me. Another live proof man e that I would certainly like more to see. Felt like a horror movie in some circus with killer maniacal clowns.

I’m torn between 3 and 4. It’s a fantastic performance—a lot of talent, no question. But i feel like it’s only something I would listen to as background music and not something I would actively enjoy.

loved the guitar, percussions, flute and piano. The bandoneon was highlighted too much for me but I guess that is culturally preferred in Tango.

I enjoyed this, but I have no good reference point. How does this compare to other tango? I wouldn't know. How is this "neuvo"? I wouldn't know. But I need to give it a rating as part of the project, so I'm going to just give it a three. (That's not completely fair to the record, but it's not like I have zero reference points. I can't see this being a two star or five star, so that leaves me with three or four. Since I didn't love it, I'm giving it a three.)

It takes two to tango. Unfortunately, I can't say I'm *fully* receptive to this album, as brilliant as the performers are on this one. Maybe there are other records released by Piazzolla that deserve to be on this list. After all, the man once released *Libertango* (whose title track was later made famous by Grace Jones). So I think that exploring that artist's discography would be wise before deciding only a late-career live album should be the one quoted by us. In the meantime, four points for the performance in this (the global score is way too low given the obvious virtuosity and artistry that is actually displayed in *The New Tango*). But this record won't be in my own list (a rare exception for a four-star record). My philosophy is that barring one or two very specific LPs, live albums should be set apart from the rest anyway. 1001 sounds like a huge number, but it's actually very small if you want to include all the essential "studio ones" out there... Very chill, very nice, very rarely hear some audience noises after like 10 minutes of music, so all in all a good album.

I didn't know what to expect of this one at all. But whacking on my Beats™ and pulling out my Dyson™ vacuum cleaner I went to do an hour or so of house cleaning as I listened. This performance was wonderful to listen to and the frantic and fast paced nature perfectly matched my chores to make it a much more enjoyable experience. Thanks Astor

Never listened to anything like this before. I found it quite a dramatic listen, got me working at a much quicker rate! Would definitely listen again. I'm glad that I've had a decent variety of albums over the past couple of weeks.

Ripping accordian part on the first track. This is really pleasant and i like it. This is a really refreshing and lovely album. La Muerta Del Angel is just this beautiful icing on this total cake of an album!

While it's is a nice sound, this isn't anything particularly ground-breaking. It is fine, and a more modern piece of Tango music, but it doesn't seem to be inventive, or particularly memorable.

What if the theme from Sex and the City sounded like an hour-long panic attack? On a serious note, there are a lot of great non-us, non-uk (I.e. “world music”) albums on this list, but just as many chintzy, late-career albums which clearly crossed over in the 80s - 90s, when the writer of the og book was coming of age. The instruments sound too crisp and synth-y, and everything is arranged with such a lack of mess. You can’t help but feel like this album was played and/or bought in a Starbucks.

As good as one could ever expect from music played on the xylophone and accordion.

Would play at a dinner party. I know nothing about tango, but great for background. I was in and out as necessary. Not to generalize, but there were some fun, funky sounds I didn't recognize that make me want to listen again. A little spooky here, a little light there.

You can tell the crowd was loving this shit. This was a very interesting ride full of fiddle glissandos, dinnertime vibraphone by Mr. Burton, and an awesome bandoneón performance by one Astor Piazzolla. I am not entirely sure why this is included in the list but I'm not particularly peeved about it. It so very close to being good dinner music but there is something a little too "jazzy" about it for me to put it on while, say, my girlfriend and I eat dinner. I know she would not like the little atonal spots. Anyway, where this music falls in my future listening environments is neither here nor there. I enjoyed this record. I'm far from being a jazz guy so I can't speak to much of the specifics of the who's who or why or how but I can talk about what I felt about the performance in general. The performers really feel like they're telling some sort of a story. Like the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. I felt these little moments of falling in love, trepidation, exuberance. Nice vignettes. It was pleasant, there was emotion that I could feel, and the performers were clearly on top of their game. For me personally this is a 3 but I have no doubt this is a 5 for the jazzheads out there.

I generally love jazz, but the combination of instruments did not work well for me. Strings, accordion, and vibraphone? Sounds like they were trying to prove a point that it could be done. On top of this, they repeated the same phrases many times, which worked well occasionally. I did like some songs, though, like little Italy and Laura’s Dream. Border btwn two and three star.

Yesterday I knew exactly one thing about Tango: that it takes two. Today I know two things: that it takes two and that the form was revolutionized by one Astor Piazzola, an Argentine bandoneon (no idea what that is) player in the 1980s. So I now know enough things about tango to have what I know about tango tango. Which is cool. Not sure what exactly makes this piece, recorded live together with American vibraphonist Gary Burton, especially special. But, what the hell. There’s good music in here. Maybe I’ll even listen to it again. I certainly won’t be caught dead listening to that old tango! Can you imagine? Not sure what to rate this, but, alas, I must. The 2.88 average it currently sits at seems unfairly low. So I’ll give it a little 4/5 boost. Thanks for all you’ve done for tango Mr. Piazzola. We salute you. 🌹

Awesome! Not too much to say, the musicianship is super tight here from almost all angles; technical ability, composition, expression, recording quality, etc. I'm not sure I heard a single missed note. I was trying to approach the accordion as a genre-less instrument to get an objective take on this album, but I don't think I was successful: this album sounds super duper French (or at least European). I kept picturing some sort of Pixar- or Dreamworks-produced 3D animated movie to pair with the music. I appreciated that while the compositions were super creative, and at times harmonically and rhythmically complex, the whole album still has a parsable tango rhythm and beat. Great album, didn't shake my soul or anything but I enjoyed the listen.

Really enjoyed this listen! Dark hallways of deception and intrigue come to mind. Music for when you’re plotting your next palatial overthrow. But then again; when has the vibraphone not had that… vibe? 3/5

Amazing musicianship, but not really my thing.

Love a tango & love Piazzolla. Also keen on the vibes (since I first heard Lionel Hampton)& on Gary Burton, ever since I found the vinyl of his 1973 album, Norwegian Wood. The tunes are all composed by Piazzolla, but the jazz treatment that Burton & the combo offer cannot be denied. All six cuts are standouts for me, but particularly Little Italy 1930, a beautiful autobiographical piece. Such a unique sound from 2 great artists.

I was really bored by this tango nuevo album. Too much nuevo, not enough tango. This is overly intellectual jazz for me. The constantly swooping violin was annoying. And I am unconvinced that marimba really helps. So, after a while listening, I thought, this really reminds me of the theme to the Terry Gilliam film "12 Monkeys" (1995), that I always enjoyed. And sure enough Suite Punta Del Este by Astor Piazolla. But that piece is not performed on this album. Plus, he wrote the classic Libertango, adapted with lyrics by Grace Jones as"I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)", a really fantastic song. But also, not on this album. And apparently he wrote an amazing piece in memory of his father, "Adios Nonino", that is a classic of the tango genre. Not on this album. So, this album seems like a weird choice on the list. It's an atypical performance by a classic composer and innovator within his genre that doesn't contain many of his most famous and genre-defining compositions. But check out the wild life on Astor Piazolla. his wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astor_Piazzolla) is a fascinating read. Some highlights: - "Gardel invited the young bandoneon player [Piazolla] to join him on his tour. Much to Piazzolla's dismay, his father decided that he was not old enough [he was only 14] to go along. The disappointment of being forbidden to join the tour proved to be fortunate, as it was on this tour in 1935 that Gardel and his entire orchestra perished in a plane crash" - "Having disbanded his first orchestra in 1950 he almost abandoned tango altogether as he continued to study Bartok and Stravinsky and orchestra direction" - "[After a classical concert in 1953] At the end of the concert, a fight broke out among members of the audience who were offended by the inclusion of two bandoneons in a traditional symphony orchestra." - "Piazzolla's new approach to the tango, nuevo tango, made him a controversial figure in his native land both musically and politically." A politically controversial tango composer! - He collapsed in 1990, and spent the last two years of his life in a coma. - There is an airport in Argentina named after him. I would totally watch a movie about the life of Astor Piazolla. And I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was familiar with a few pieces of his work. But this album was not enjoyable for me, and I never intend to listen to it again. A missed opportunity by 1001 albums to select a properly representative work.

Just not for me

Gets really repetitive really fast, but Nuevo Tango is worth a listen

An album that I can certainly appreciate, but not necessarily enjoy as much as I'd like to. Music like this is meant to be listened to live, as a full experience. On it's own it veers closer towards background music - it sounds very interesting sure, but it's background music nonetheless.

Just because you’re the best musician at playing an obscure instrument, it doesn’t equate to playing some of the best music Not list worthy.

A new discovery. Quote extraordinary

The playing is obviously top notch, and these tango meets jazz meets classical compositions are cool and all. But I just can’t get down with vibes and accordion as lead instruments. I’ve heard better jazz, I’ve heard better classical. But ain’t nothing really wrong with this.

"The New Tango" is a collboration between Argentinian Tango leader, composer, arranger and bandoneón player Astor Piazzolla and American jazz vibraphonist, composer and educator Gary Burton. The album is a concert recorded at the 1986 Montreux Festival. That must have been quite a festival. The music are pieces written by Piazzolla over his 40-year career and the concert billed as a suite for Vibraphone and New Tango Quintet. The album are seven music pieces being led by the vibraphone, bandoneón and violin (Fernando Suarez Paz). "Milango is Coming" begins the album and is more classical music with the violin. Eventually the vibraphone and bandoneón come in and the music sounds more like a tango. That happens quite frequency during these songs. "Vibraphonissimo" picks up the pace. It was specially written for Gary Burton and the vibraphone is front and center. The violin gives "Nuevo Tango" a very dramatic feel. All instruments come in and we clearly have a Tango melody. Big sounds abound in "Operation Tango." A violin break and solo. The most traditional tango-sounding song on the album. There is no doubt to the excellence of these players and music. The music changed pace and frequently the lead instruments. Never a dull moment. The audience was extremely appreciative (or least the recording of them) with a thunderous applause after each song. I enjoyed this album quite a bit.

Ah not my thing, I bet this is groundbreaking if you like classical music and whatnot but I just didn't vibe with it. Too disjointed for me. Saved tracks: Little Italy

Plinkety plonk. Not really for me.

I imagine if you were present at the time of recording - you would marvel at the talent of these two extraordinary musicians. The dramatic scale of tension from one track to the next would create an atmosphere unparalleled to anything seen from a duo before. Listening to the applause between tracks they really did enjoy it. For me though, as someone listening at home, I found this album a little trippy. Like I was in some kind of nightmare. I'd said yes to another pint of 8.2% scrumpy cider when really I should have been sensible and told the gang I was going home. Who knows, maybe that's what they were going for? And if it was - well done to them. At least I know where to go if I feel like an anxiety attack. I won't be listening to this anytime soon, but really appreciate having something different come my way.

Really liking this blending of styles. Some parts I didn't like as much but overall super cool.

Didn’t interest me. It’s not a patch on Stephane Grapelli and the Hot Club.

As ever with improvisation, I'd rather they went back to these (admittedly fairly good) ideas and tried to refine them into tighter tunes. Still, interesting instruments and some nice bits on here

I think the soft recording quality inhibited the prescribed jazz magic that this recording was supposed to reveal. It did not grab me and pull me in as an outsider, which I think makes a remarkable album. I wanted to be seduced by layers of jazz improvisation and synergy, but left wondering why this album just be listened to before the end.

Ooh. Delightful. I don't have the musical vocab to say anything interesting about a classical tango album but this is very, very nice. I have one other touchstone in this ouvre I guess which was the soundtrack to Waking Life by Tosca Tango Orchestra, which was also slightly offbeat in places but more generally unsettling than this. This is lovely. I particularly love the longer tracks as they wend and wain.

A fun soundtrack to making pasta!

Y'know, I look at this album after listening and think how much of an album this is in the "walk by without thinking about listening" spectrum, which is really a shame, because the contents inside are excellent. The violin's ability to go from scretching to being absolutely gorgeous at a moments notice, or the piano appearing sporadically to aid with the Vibraphone's more mellow sound, or the bandoneon really partnering with everything else to create this great album. Yes, the songs do go on a tad long, and I could understand why someone may find this more boring than anything, but just listening to the wide range of emotions really lets this one spread it's wings and be absolutely fantastic. Perhaps not music for a Sunday drive or a workout, but music for the point of listening.

Tango is a new one for me. Lots of this sounds like 20th century classical, with that Stravinsky shrieking violin doing it's fingernail down the chalkboard work. That aside there is some real interest here, clearly musicians at the top of their game.

Pretty down with this, though it had a bit of that issue I get with modern jazz, where it sometimes seems to just run into a bunch of scales noodling up and down and I don’t know if it’s really an Emperor’s New Clothes situation or if I’m just too dumb and unsophisticated to get it. Also kept making me think about music in those Professor Layton DS games (not a bad thing!) though that obviously gets the direction of influence backwards.

A pretty upbeat and entertaining classical style album that I guess is a twist on tango. Overall it was easy to listen to and I enjoyed it but I don’t think I’ll revisit this one much. 4.1/10

Nice to be exposed to non-popular music, especially unconventional sounds from different parts of the world, but this album just didn’t sound like music, but more like sound effects for an unnerving part of a movie or video game.

Out of all non-popular music styles, Tango probably is the least suited one for pure listening. Not a necessary great experience

There is such a things as too much xylophone

I feel like I'm trapped in the interstitial sections of an episode of Mister Rodger's Neighbourhood.

Fine, but very light. The feature instrument is something like vibes and just has a very smooth, flat sound with little attack. It’s an odd choice of instrument to feature on an all-instrumental album, because it leads to an extremely low-energy, slapped-out vibe that, there’s no way around it, sounds like elevator music / being put on hold. Nothing wrong with what they’re doing, just anything that’s this close to 0/10 on excitement factor isn’t for me.

I'm sure I'd enjoy this in a live setting with a whiskey sour in hand but right now I'm mowing the yard and this is not getting me in the mower zone

I was surprisingly blown away by this. I love how it incorporates traditional Italian/Argentinian tango music with the really dramatic classical influence and even some jazz fusion. The dynamics are really engaging and the musicianship/composition is excellent. Totally unlike anything I would have ever come across on my own.

I can't give this a one-star review because the talent of Mr. Piazzolla and his companions is undeniable. But I also can't give it any higher than a two-star review because it was also completely unenjoyable. I can't imagine any reason why I'd want to listen to an hour of elevator music. Hard pass.

Why is this on the list?

I'm not really a fan of tango, but I did enjoyed this blend of classical music and tango very much. The breadth of variety, coupled with depth of feeling and intensity made for an exciting spin. The second track, which was mostly xylophone was almost a pain to listen to - but the rest was good enough to still warrant a good rating.

I guess I'm not as open minded as I'd thought. I'm not having this though. Not what I came here for. Honestly, this may be the toughest thing I've had to entertain listening to so far in the course of over 600 albums. Even just clicking through the tracks this started to make me agitated and uncomfortable in a way that nothing else on this list quite has before. This music would repel me from practically any room. Sorry.

Great musicianship all around. That Gary Burton on the vibraphone is a beast. I actually know nothing about tango except more typical dance stuff so I was not aware that tango was this intense at times, almost like a video game's battle music. Not bad at all.

Excellent, excellent background. Transporting background. Not interested in listening to this closely, but would never turn it off in the background.

I am no tango fan, so had no idea it could sound this progressive. I am, however, a fan of Gary Burton, and could listen to his wonderfully expressive vibes playing all day. Didn't have a scooby that Burton turned his hand to tango. These compositions, which I'm guessing are by Astor Piazzolla, bring the whole 'newgrass' movement to mind, whereby bluegrass was cut with jazz and rock to make an exciting, virtuosic variant of a traditional genre. Stimulating stuff, then, although the first half of 'Vibraphonissimo' sounds like the section before the guitar solo in Frank Zappa's 'Zomby Woof' - and I'll never not find the title 'Operation Tango' to be funny.

I enjoyed having this on as background music, but I can't judge it very well as i'm not really a fan of the genre and don't know much about it. I did get a little bit tired of it by the end and don't think i'll ever come back to it so can't quite give it a 3

Very different, very entertaining. Liked the vibraphone piece "Vibraphonissimo" especially. The different time signatures and styles wove in and out through each of the pieces. It was quite refreshing, and a very different type of album than I normally listen to. Really enjoyed it.

You will not appreciate this if you only listen a couple times. It can just blend into the background otherwise. For that reason I was initially at a 3. But as I kept listening I really picked up on the different instruments and moods being set in the music. It was like listening to an opera or ballet - I could picture characters moving and expressing emotions with the music. Very cool. Some favorites - Little Italy (loved the emotion from the strings), Laura's Dream (sweeping, and again the strings; sounded like sirens at times), and Operation Tango (cool pacing with slow and frenetic bits).

Chulo pero no es mi estilo

I quite like this, very cinematic, feels like the sound track to a thriller. I only got half way through on day one though and I don’t really have much desire to revisit it to finish it off.

Well this was unexpected. I really dug these instrumental tracks and will enter my chill music to listen to at work playlist. This is the type of stuff the list is made for. I'd have never listened to this without it. A fantastic find and some really great tunes and musicianship.

I generally love discovering little gems like this one; new-to-me music is part of the joy of this project. Sadly I did not enjoy this album as much as I hoped to based on the description. It had some very pretty parts, in Laura's Dream for example, but in general I found the whole album didn't really engage me. I listen twice to make sure I hadn't gotten distracted the first time through, and no, I don't dislike it, but there's just not much in there that excites me. Even though I wanted it to. I give The New Tango a solid "fine", 2.5 stars.

Je vais profiter de cet album de nouveau tango pour passer un coup de gueule au sujet de la commande que j'ai passée il y a deux jours. J'avais commandé un tartare de saumon et un supplément sauce dans un restaurant que je ne citerai pas et n'ai reçu qu'une salade, le livreur m'assurant que c'est tout ce qu'on lui avait donné. Je retentai l'opération le soir-même dans un autre restaurant de la même chaîne. Le tartare et son supplément sauce arrivèrent bien chez moi mais me rendirent malade toute la journée suivante. Autant vous dire que je ne suis pas près de recommander un tartare de sitôt.

J'ai adoré ce petit morceau de jazz distillé de bon matin, même si cela ne suffira pas à me faire oublier l'indigestion subie à la découverte du gateau Sly & The Family Stone.

Well, what can one say about nuevo tango (or any tango) – you either dig it or you don't. This is intense, both in the driving passages and the melanchoic suspensions (where it sounds like the composer is questioning himself). GB adds a swing and ligthness to a form that can get somber and rigid. One hasn't the authority to say whether this should be included or excluded to other milestones of the genre (or sub-genre), but surely there must be room for more. The setting at Montreux would seem to add to both the intensity (of which neuvo tango had plenty) and the occassion. "Laura's Dream" is a highlight.

Tim Burton meets the Fifties is the vibe I got from this. But in a good way. Very impressive for a live album.

Oh perfect, just what I need to hear. A minimalist classical album in the style and form of tango... classified as "new tango." I can hear influences from 70s folk and pop music (maybe just the classic vibraphone abuse), and it's a bit accessible but mostly boring with some slight remarkable variations. Beautiful here and chaotic there. Favorites: Nuevo Tango, Laura's Dream
