+100 for Spanish and English vocals. But in general I don't like the style and don't find the lyrics or music that interesting. Comes across as cartoonish.
Not really my thing, but I can see the appeal
Maybe my enjoyment of Hip Hop and Rap is a bit unfair, especially since I'm no user of drugs. I feel these guys definitely write the music to be enjoyed under the influence, not using myself, I just can't relate and connect with the lyrics. That said, the DJ is impressive and a great sampler. As for the rest, it wasn't really grabbing me. Standout tracks: How I Could Just Kill A Man, Hole In The Head, 4 out of 10
"How I Could Just Kill A Man" is the best track on the album but unfortunately for them Rage Against The Machine did a far superior cover. Highlights: How I Could Just Kill A Man Hand On The Pump
After years of seeing Cypress Hill popping up in movies and tv shows I just can’t take these guys seriously. I also don’t care for the strange high pitched voice.
Keine wirklichen Hits. Man kann trotzdem gut zum Beat nicken.
Was expecting the album with "Insane in the Membrane" on it and was disappointed. B-Real's voice is compelling, and the beats and sampling are pretty good, though sometimes the mix isn't so great. Like on "Pigs" that guitar stab was so forward I couldn't hear have of what they were saying. Content wise I just don't appreciate "Cyprus Hill" as an album very much... outside of the understandably anti- police message this plays like a smorgasbord of pandering to 8th grade juvenile delinquents. I get it: you're smoking weed, drinking a 40, and looking to shoot a person for any perceived sleight or disrespect... get some new material.
Classic and influential early 90's Hip Hop. Not quite as high of quality as other albums from the era, but still sounds good to this day.
I love hip hop, but never felt the vibe with Cypress Hill, might be good for someone, but not for me.
Every song sounds exactly like a Cypress Hill song. I'm not sure I could differentiate one from another. Which is fine, but it is a lot for 14 songs.
I recognize the name Cypress Hill but didn’t know most of this album. Probably my least favorite rap album so far but has some good flows. I can imagine it was innovative for the time but didn’t stand the test of time as well as other albums from their era.
Mellow, funky, beat, mediocre wordplay, a good vibe, but I don’t think I would’ve put it on this list. Then I got pulled over and given a ticket put on pigs, right after, felt satisfying.
Didn't really do any thiing for me.
Really liked the backing music, but still don't like rap so 2 stars for me

Good vibe but not finding anything outstanding on it, prefer their later work. 2/5
Was ok..
It had its time but doesnt stand up for my style or the times. But not bad!
Bad and annoying rap voices and too loud.
Not for me
Very clearly 90s rap. That’s not my genre at all, but it was well executed for what it is.
90s pioneers of gangsa rap. I like this a lot more than most of the genre that followed. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Real Estate Date listened: 22/09/23
The album is the same old repetitious, misogynistic puffery that rap is known for.
Somehow an idea of Cypress Hill was so much better "in my head" than in reality. I had the impression their discography is full of Rage Against The Machine type of work, but with heavier hip hop influence and a bit darker tonnes as well. Meanwhile, this album was just an average hip hoop album with a slight latino sounding drums as a beat. None of the songs had a nice flow, it was all very raw. Even "How I Could Just Kill a Man", a song that was perfectly covered by aforementioned RATM, in its original sound was incredibly clunky and just plain unattractive. I am very disappointed, I really thought it might be a great album.
Better than many, but worse than most.
This didn't do it for me.
Tres Equis medio guasa. 2.5
A bit disappointing tbh.
Found this a bit naff, to be honest. The gangster stuff isn't really my style, then they shift to some stuff about the joys of marijuana - but there's no real stylistic shift between the two sets of tracks, so it feels a bit weird and all sounds quite similar (apart from a couple of the really stoned tracks), just centred round a different sample. Production is pretty good - the one real sound style they create is quite good but not particularly original. 2/5.
Eu consigo ver porque as pessoas gostam mas nao consigo gostar porque meu vizinho fdp adora
Old school, important record but did not age with or grow on me
I’m not super familiar with Cypress Hill. I know Insane In The Brain, but beyond that there isn’t much that I’ve heard before. I’m not sure what to expect with this, because (if I remember correctly) Cypress Hill are a little more odd that other hip hop groups. Maybe I misremember though. Let’s find out! Songs I already knew: How I Could Just Kill A Man Favourites: Latin Lingo My thoughts on this weren’t quite up and down throughout the listen. Initially, I thought it was pretty fun. After a few songs, it started to feel too similar - there really isn’t much difference between a lot of tracks on this album. But then towards the end, it did pick up a little and started to win me back over. The music itself can be funky at times, but is also a bit too noisy for my taste as they use sounds of static and General white noise within the songs. Overall, this was ok, but I fling I’ll be returning for more.
Just a bit dull and uninspiring. Not a fan of the generic 90s hip hop that this seemed to inspire, no heart or soul to it. Feels like his hops version of what Limp Bizkit was to metal. Amazing if you're a kid but changes the course of the genre for the worse for several years.
Been a long time since I've heard this. Everybody played this at one time. It's okay I never really got into it much.
This just isn't my thing. It is better than Dizzee Rascal though.
Tja, wel grappig
Niet voor in de stemming
Mixed bag. Some lyrics are gritty and violent, and others, specially in the second half are as silly as it can be. There's also not much in terms of memorable beats and rhythm. All in all, not a particularly memorable album.
the main problem i have with this album the same problem that i had with the orbital album from a few days ago. very redundant. so redundant that it is almost trance inducing. the rappers rely on a sample track that keeps looping while they perform over it. that’s not to say that they’re not good at what they do. they’re very talented, just not my thing. and b-real’s vocals are unique and ok in small doses, but are like nails on a chalkboard after a while. certainly an acquired taste.
Bryant: Clearly, this is an album that wasn't made for me. That said, it pretty much glorifies violence for the entire album and endorses homophobia. I don't like that. When I was 20, I probably would have liked the weed tracks. I'm not 20 anymore. Erica: It's like they were trying to make theme songs for murdering people. This might have been the split that I didn't follow into rap.
Not terrible but not something I’d listen to at this point in my life. Maybe when I was younger.
Personally, I'm not the hugest fan of rap rock. I mean I like me some good RATM. I definitely hear similarities to RATM, they were probably inspired by Cypress Hill. Especially with How I Could Just Kill a Man. The Phuncky Feel One is also very good. The rest of the album is okay. I like their energy, but not so much their sound.
Totaal mijn ding niet
DNF Not my cup of tea
I preach from my ass. My farts is my sermons. The church is your mouth where I shoot my holy sperm in. You can take your role models, roll 'em on my meat. Bitches always on the menu when I go out to eat.
It’s alright is about as much as I have to say about this album. Not really my thing, felt kinda bored listening it. I am yet again finding my self asking what makes this one of the albums I have to listen to before I kick it? Idk it’s okay, not an album that I’d listen to and immediately hit the boys up and tell them they need to listen to it. Scare the hoes music at times too.
Cypress Hill is the debut album by the American hip hop group Cypress Hill. This innovative West Coast hip hop album was critically and commercially successful and has been certified double platinum in the US. Cypress Hill is one of the first gangsta hip hop albums to go mainstream. The rapping feels a little outdated today, but the beats and rhymes were solid. This is a great album from the early days of hip hop.
The casual homophobia ruins so much of 90s hiphop
Yea, they’re good at what they do, I just don’t really like what they do. 2 stars
Not a great advert for Hip Hop.
hipster dross
decent hip sound - crude lyrics generally...not my most favorite type for rap.
Fine. After the nostalgia wore off i got a little bored.
Cypress Hill was one of the worst live acts I've ever seen (and it might not have been their fault, being the inbetweener set between MxPx and The Offspring makes no sense.) I didn't really find much in this album for me. It's fairly repetitive and mostly uninteresting.
I’ve never really connected with gangsta rap or stoner rap so I’m not surprised I don’t connect with this.
NUL
on souffle
I like and am familiar with some of their bigger hits, but I never delved deeper into their discography. "how i could just kill a man" is a great song. The rawness of the beats and lyrics are refreshing. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this album as much as I wanted to. They have made a huge impact on rap and music overall.
mustn't
A whole shtick based around the consumption of copious amounts of dope seems like a narrow focus but I might just be reading them wrong
Not a good hip hop album. The poor beats with a screeching sound and basic percussion mixed with a very bad sounding voice, made it hard to listen to.
Nope
At times it's kind of fun and funny, at other times it's kind of annoying.
Not my scene in any way. But listening to the music and the flow, and not paying too much attention to the lyrics, this album is mildly interesting and verges on enjoyable in places. Acceptable to have jamming along in the background but I'll not be visiting it again. Favorite track: How I Could Just Kill a Man.
2 stars, nothing really special to me about this one. I see that it's a part of overall hiphop trends of the 90s but nothing really jazzes me.
It's probably ok for some but not really my thing.
Early 90s hip hop always sounds the same to me
Not my personal flavor. Has one jam though.
I can definitely see why this was recommended and I heard some songs I recognized but I probably wouldn’t throw it on in a daily basis.
Puh, stellenweise richtig gut, stellenweise ziemlich anstrengend.
not my taste
Man, I couldn't care less about what these guys are talking about. A few songs in, and the hardcore rap-ness was dulling. BUT what's under those rappings? That works pretty well most of the time. I complain a lot that albums don't grab me and pull me in, but this one did numerous times and I didn't want to get pulled in. So anyway, good beats, bad raps, 2 stars.
It's possible - just possible - I owned this in high school. It would be a very un-me thing to listen to and yet the vague memory of this on cassette exists in a corner of my head. Anyway, listening in 2022 and it just feels like this is music that dudes who have Punisher stickers on the back of their trucks would love. Because these guys looooove rapping about guns! Those photos of the crazy gun families who have their kids posing with AR-15s for their Christmas cards? They would love some of these tunes. (Maybe not "Pigs.") And Cypress Hill is right about one thing: I can't understand how they could just kill a man. You got me, dudes. But dammit there's a lot of musicality to just the way these guys rap, to say nothing of the beats and samples and whatnot. And to make matters worse, some of the songs about guns and shooting fools are WAY more listenable to me than things like "The Phuncky Feel One" or "Stoned is the Way of the Walk." Nothing is less enjoyable to me than hearing dudes rap about weed. Not even rapping about shotguns, apparently. So, I have learned something about myself today. And just wait till you see our Christmas card this year!
Greit. Men et heilt album blei litt mye. :P
Can only handle a few CH songs...an entire album is too much for me.
Not my kind of music, repetative background, not great early 90s rap.
Not my thing at all
Meh
The songs have good harmony and flow well, but I don't see any interesting ideas either musically or lyrically.
Not a fan, just not the type of music I enjoy.
Eh, not really my thing. Not horrible though. 2 stars.
Ok, but quite forgettable debut. Black Sunday is way better.
Apparently this is pioneering but I'm sure by '91 some pretty similar sounding rap had already been released? Shows what I know, I guess. I like it in small doses but the relentless one-bar loops on every track start to grate pretty quickly - it could use more differentiation. 2.5
This was a more tuneful sort of rap than some but by the end of the album the tracks were beginning to sound very similar. It was alright but I wouldn’t seek it out again. I’m going to be hard and give it 2*
It was fairly meh. Almost a parody of Cypress Hill... (I appreciate how silly that sounds).
I'm all on board with anyone advocating for the legalization of cannabis, but this got old in a hurry. As in, after the first 3 tracks. Quite ahead of their time on the whole problem with law enforcement types though.
i listened all the way throug but i didnt like it. 2strs
I smoked a lot of weed in high school listening to this album, but I feel like it hasn't aged as well as other hip-hop albums from the late 80s/early 90s. The beats are pretty good, but the lyrics are terrible. Couldn't make it past the 4th track. 2 stars for nostalgia. 2/5
03/29/2022 Not a bad album, but also not very distinctive. Maybe this one just wasn’t for me.
Best Song: Hole In Your Head. Something about the grating voice really works on this kind of schoolyard bullying track. And you can't tell me "Scooby dooby doo y'all" isn't a fun lyric. Worst Song: Stoned is the Way of the Walk. So choppy in the delivery that it makes me feel like English isn't my native language. Overall: For some reason, I've always thought that Cypress Hill was the rap version of The Smashing Pumpkins. I think it might be because both vocalists sound like they were born without mouths and have to sing exclusively through their noses. The beats are solid, in-your-face, 90's fare, and the lyrics are alright, but I just cannot cope with that voice.
Most tracks start out strong with great samples and defiant bars, but run into trouble when they get stuck in an infinite loop (i.e, "Hole In the Head") before hitting lazy fade-outs every single time. The LP would be so much well-composed if the tracks maintained their energy through variation and actual endings rather than disappearing like puffs of smoke once they've seemingly run out of ideas...
Well, I know what song I'm singing next time I play "this little piggy" with my kid's toes!
4/10. Not my thing
I really like their sound. But everything sounds insane in my membrane after a while.
Naaa. Not for me.
i dont like rap
It was fine but i didn't like it
Reminds me of living in California as a kid Pretty fun but not my style, as is most hip-hop.
Hip hop
Glad to have listened finally, but won't be riding this train again. Unless my nose gets really blocked, and I find myself very high on herb.
Good lyrics and samples but it wore on me after awhile. It was a relief when Latin Lingo came on to shake things up a bit. This is a strong 2.5 and I was heatedly debating with myself whether to round up or down. I gave The Pharcyde and Outcast both a 3 but I think those two are better records so this gets a 2.
It was better than I expected it to be. Hip hop just really isn’t my thing. Fav song: Stoned is the Way of the Walk
I didn't like Cypress Hill is the 90s and still don't like them.
I have clear memories of "Insane in the Brain." However, all other recollection is as hazy as a Cypress Hill concert. Now getting reacquainted with them, I have discovered that it wasn't all wacky songs about getting high. It was songs about getting high, or songs about killing people. Sometimes in the same song. What kind of weed were they smoking!? These dudes really needed to chill out on the couch, eat some snacks, and laugh at something dumb on television. Or anything else that would keep them off the streets. Cause damn they sound violent. Cypress Hill is perhaps an important link in the chain that gets us from early hip hop, to early 90s gangsta rap, to rap rock, rage rock, and rage rap. Or whatever all that ultra-angry crap in the late 90s was. I bet Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst really liked Cypress Hill, only he wasn't anywhere near as hard in real life as B Real. I think Cypress Hill also likely influenced Insane Clown Posse. This album stood in stark contrast to 2Pac, which we listened to last week. 2Pac's lyrics absolutely delve a lot into gangbanging and the violence that comes with it. But the difference is that 2Pac had a depression resignation about the life, while Cypress Hill is glorifying it. That was a big turn off for me.
Why does every track end up sounding the same?
Just didn't dig it. It's ok hiphop But not really my schtick 2
*I already got this album before I joined the current group, so this review reflects my updated feelings. Therefore "Saved Prior" is songs I saved from when I first got the album* Saved Prior: Break It Up, Real Estate Off Rip: The Phuncky Feel One Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: My feelings on this album have not changed, not really for me and the vocals are still a little grating to listen to. Gave it a two the first time, and that two stands.
Fair
i never liked cypress hill.
"one of the best hip hop albums ever released". Repetitive, uninspired, looped and sampled with discernable musical input at all - it's hopeless doggerel chanted over snippets of other songs. This isn't music. What's the point? Why does half the world think rap is music? Amazing.
Not my style
90s hip hop. Not bad but not my thing
Like the beats. Good flows. Not my style lyrically or sonically.
Decent early 90s rap. Doesn't blow me away. I do like B-Real's nasally delivery, but that is probably the most memorable part of the album. 2/5
not my style
This helping of early West Coast hip-hop painted vivid pictures and brought some funky beats, but felt very uneven- didn't quite hang together in the way I'd hoped. Together, "Pigs" and "How I Could Just Kill a Man" made a formidable intro. The first track calls out police corruption and privilege with a knowing grin and a gristly end, and the second (the album's biggest success) scores with its line "Here is something you can't understand/how I could just kill a man." It feels like a simple, immediate illustration of the gulf in experience, understanding and culture between gangsta rappers and their privileged white listeners. The first two tracks examine the gangsta lifestyle as a product of inequality, systemic exclusion, necessity. It's interesting stuff, but most of the rest of the album seemed to be standard pursuits of the pleasures of smoking and shooting, with a few homophobic lyrics thrown in. It's not all a drag as we get some upbeat sampling and impassioned performances: I had a lot of fun with "The Phuncky Feel One" and its denser, more cacophonous counterpart "The Funky Cypress Hill Shit", and "Light Another" had a good stop-start bassline and intermittent horn samples which helped to sell it as danceable music. My main issue was the feeling of treading water after about six or seven songs. Many of the tracks felt repetitive even at only 3 minutes, with a single loop and little variation in sound, as well as limited exploration from B-Real's vocal lines and rhymes. The interludes didn't really add anything for me and didn't serve the album's flow- "Ultraviolent Dreams" is a semi-trippy throwaway experiment, "Break It Up" a single line looped round to no effect. When "Tres Equis" came around, it was a nice surprise to have explicit encounters rendered in full Spanish. More of this sort of experimentation and playfulness would have been a lot of fun. On the whole it's not the best I've heard, but has a couple of powerful songs in the front half which I can appreciate it stakes its reputation on.
Nope
Cannot stand this clown. Total and utter knob who cannot handle fame or fortune very well. Bit shit at rapping too. He’s not exactly vanilla Ice
Absolutely glorious beats but the lyrics date badly. Lazy homophobia and posturing with clever couplets few and far between.
don't like rap
First listen. For me now it is a 2/5 May get better over time.
The album starts strong, but I lost interest soon after. Probably wouldn't be the Cypress Hill album I'd pick for this list.
Not my bag really but didn't mind listening to it.
sounded dated to me
Not exactly my cup of tea but interesting enough to listen all the way through. Once.
The sound of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Liked a few songs, How I Could Just Kill a Man was good. A bit samey overall though.
old school rap Lead sounds like a better version of Danny brown but there's nothing really interesting here
An ok listen, not really outstanding for me. Best: How Could I Just Kill a Man, Hole In the Head Worst: Psycobetabuckdown, Latin Lingo 2.5 Stars
music is okay but theyre as annoying and unlistenable as beastie boys.
It's bouncy, OK, but otherwise not to my taste
Meh. Cool vocals but pretty generic
Not for me, Clive
Childish themes (guns and marijuana). Cool beats and samples (got some Dusty Springfield too)
I 100% understand why this album should be on this list, but man I just did not enjoy it much.
Songs Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: Real Estate Cutting Edge: Break It Up Overall Notes: Not really my thing, high pitched delivery jarring at first but you get used to it, preferred the second half to the first
2/5 naaaahh
Brings back memories, but I really couldn't into it. Maybe was my Headspace. The one voice was a little too needling.
“Cypress Hill” by Cypress Hill (1991) West coast hip hop with (of course) attitude. Dispensing with the moral outrage (pro or con), let’s listen to the artistry. Violence and drug use depicted with elaboration and panache, with a healthy attention to detail, these lyrics are not simply fashioned to fit groovy music. They raise wallowing to an art form, even if the topical range is oh so limited and predictable. Interesting (to me) that “Hole in the Head” and “Ultraviolet Dreams” do NOT receive an “explicit” advisory. The group Cypress Hill receives no treatment in Bradley and DuBois, “Anthology of Rap” (Yale University Press, 2010), and this is telling. I’d rather listen to Lauryn Hill than Cypress Hill. Excellent production values, and plenty of evidence of professional collaboration. Background vocals are very well arranged, with intricate weaving of several competent voices. But the vocals are too diminished in the mix. Effects are too subdued. There is much that is too puzzling about this album to attract an interest beyond the all too limited range of the lyrics. There’s much better hip hop out there. 2/5
Hip hop rollo.
Never been a huge fan of Cypress Hill's style...
not good
They did more than Jump Around? Funny, didn't sound like it...
It's fine, but I only need 1 or 2 cypress hill tracks
Very rudey
Bit samey.
Gangsta hip hop Fk the police violence sex drugs homophobic themes more violence combinations of the above. Not much else. Turns out I don't like that much
I only liked the last track but the rest is all super beat heavy which isn’t my vibe.
Not my bag, so not surprised I really really didn't like this.
Just grow up, for god's sake. I don't want to hear about your promiscuity or how much you hate gay people, just shut up. I have great concerns that the lack of quality music from the 90s may be due to a lack of Doctor Who. We may be going into another dark age folks x
I don't do any drugs, which hindered my ability to enjoy this but I did save one song for the giggles. So one star.
Gangster Rap is where I draw the line on this list. I get that this is important music for a lot of people….im just not one of them.
this was so boring
Not for me
The perfect formula for 90s rap success: 80s hip-hop music bed, meaningless interludes, glorified gun violence, celebrate drug culture, hate the cops and novelty vocals. Pass.
really not for me it was fun, but it got repetitive and boring after a while. It's not something I would listen to again but if it was on I could vibe to it
If you can't say something nice ... it's a no for me.
Inte min bag. En etta.
Garbage
nah
Musically meh. Happy to tour Russia.
I'm surprised by how boring I found the album. Everything just ran together; there was nothing that stood out. It wasn't awful, but I've heard better elevator music.
While the grooves are there, the lyrics have not aged well. The usual gangsta rap garbage that has almost no value. It also lacks anyone of the hits that any knows at large. No thanks. Next...
Flawless perfection
Trip trip hop
Seems like this album was relevant for the evolution of West Coast hip-hop. I am very disconnected from this genre and I simply do not see it.
I partly understand why this album is on the list. Cypress Hill is popular and sells a lot of albums. In that way he has become an important part of the hip-hop history. And yes, he has also been copied a lot, so a sort of role model for others. It doesn't change anything about his "music", though. Not interesting, not good, not anything at all.
never like these guys
Definitely did not enjoy this, but I’ve heard worse.
Did not enjoy this.
eeehhh... not a fan
That‘s so bad.
Probably better than the ilk of its peers, but I don’t know why this made the list. Waste of time.
0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Don't get why this deserves a spot in this list. Everything sounds the same and not meaningful at all
Grauenvoll
not all music is for all people... this would not make my Top 2000.
This was dumb.
nope
West Coast HipHop providing a monotonous listening experience by lacking development in the backing beats, in melody and in (cohesive) harmony, which isn't even slightly improved by engaging vocal rhythm and attitude producing unrelatable lyrics. I simply couldn't latch onto something so I tuned out of the music.
Sucks
Nope.
How can their aim be that good when they smoke so much? Not an album for me.
It’s a hard pass for me. Just not interested in this genre.
Too much homophobia and guns to enjoy the performative stunty stuff about weed.
p658. 1991. 1 star.. (C)rap. Foul mouthed, tedious, offensive nursery rhymes about drugs and killing people.
Shit!
I have never really been a fan of gangsta rap, so I came into this hoping it might surprise me. I have always been curious about Cypress Hill given their reputation and influence, but this album just did not land for me. A lot of the lyrical focus revolves around crime, confrontation and hostility toward the police, and there is not enough variety in theme to keep me engaged. The production and sampling are solid, and you can hear why the record had an impact in the early nineties, but overall it feels one dimensional to my ears. I can respect its place in hip hop history, but as a listening experience it did not grip me and it is not something I would return to. Favourite song: None that stood out enough to revisit. Least favourite: The overall tone felt repetitive throughout. Album artwork: A fairly typical early nineties hip hop cover. Striking enough, but not particularly memorable for me
American shit
Hip hop. I don't waste my time on it anymore. I've heard it in three pieces. The usual stuff, I don't hear any differences. It didn't seem as bad as other hip hop albums, but I wasn't the least bit interested. 1/5
This was not good. I wish they used more than one measure's worth of a sample stretched out for an entire song. I was just bored listening to this. 1.5
I hated this.
Probably my least favorite hip hop album so far. Not into thug stuff.
Not up for rap. Just a cash grab by people who can’t sing or play an instrument. 1/5
No
Überhaupt nicht meins.
Hip Hop for people who like to get high and don't actually like Hip Hop.
the wooOOooOoooOOooooOorst
I found this album dull. The repetitive instrumentation and the silly sing-song vocal style didn’t work for me at all. The rapping itself was fine, but not enough to redeem the rest of it. Standout Song: None Score: 1/5
meh NNN
not for me id say its boring
Intelligenta människor lyssnar på Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Trisomie 21 osv. Ointelligenta lyssnar på det här.
Started it, skipped it.
(C)rap music. I refer to my previous (now many) reviews of this genre. In happier news just bought a new car today. 0.1/5 19/9/24
There's too much hip hop/rap in this list. This more of the same.
No
mpuai c'est vieux quoi
If I could rate it a zero I would. I don't want to hear about pu$$y in my music
Afskaplega leiðigjarnt. Fíla ekkert við þetta.
Not for me
meh. very repetitve beats
Not for me. Also probably not aimed at me. They were good in the Simpsons.
Hip Hop - aka. Hard Pass. 1/5
j'aime pas
not into "Gangstah Rap"
1 . Rap de Mierda
Not my style of music so I didn't enjoy the albums and couldn't finish it.
Took two songs to turn off. Pigs is horrible and I gave Kill a Man a chance for being the most played song. No interest, easy DNF.
I'm sure this appeals to someone but it is not for me. I listened to as much as I could stand which was about 11-12 songs or so. The sample choices are good, it keeps things interesting, but my complaint about that is the loops are too short and repetitive. I don't like rap either so there's really not much here for me.
Not my cup of tea.
Incredibly repetitive.
no thanks
OMG! No music here, just noise! Need drugs to listen through this!
Hip hop is the genre I know least about. I can see how this album was influential to the genre especially coming out so early in the 90s. It's just not for me. 1/5
Again, its not my thing. Did not finish.
I tried. I couldn't get into the album.
Good but not for me
Not great. Some of the backing musical ideas are good for the first ten seconds, but they aren't varied or developed. Combined with the lack of melody or (cohesive) harmony, this creates a very monotonous listening experience that's only slightly improved by engaging vocal rhythm and attitude. The lyrics were probably relatable for someone, but not me. There just wasn't anything in the music to latch onto, and I felt myself unconsciously tuning out the noise. A great deal of 90s rap and hip-hop can be summarised with a description like this, and Cypress Hill is no exception. At least the album length wasn't excessively stuffed with dull, scripted skits. It's got that going for it.
Still hate it 30 years later. Listens: Could only put myself through one run through. Fave track: Something For The Blunted because it had the fewest lyrics. Rating: 1
I endure
Not my thing, at all
For some reason sounds so much repetitive to me than other rap. Some of these beats feel like torture listening to. Couldn't make it through the album.
I didn’t like this all and was surprised it was a success. I didn’t think the rapping was creative at all. But what do I know? Maybe by the end of my 1001 album journey I’ll feel differently.
awful
Awful
More silly than intimidating now, apart from the homophobia, which is downright terrifying.
Nope. The music of emotionally stunted frat boys who think they can rap. Nope nope nope.
Can't sit through this album. Not my cup of tea
Not a rap fan, but this one did have some more interesting instrumental samples underneath
Did not like at all, some creepy lyrics
hip hop no
Don't like the lyrics, at least I dont want to drive these in to my subconscious mind. No thanks, trying to make the world a more positive peaceful place because I think it's the right thing to do. Who knows if I am right or wrong but it feels wrong to dwell on stuff like this.
Quite possibly the worst thing I've ever listened to
Didn't find much joy here
Don’t get it. One listens was enough for me Cover art. Confused
Nah.
juvenile and irritating
This does not belong on this list.
Whinge about life....check. Use the n word.....check. Brag.....check. It starts off interestingly, but it's still this boring genre where you make a beat and talk over it. The cliches, misogyny, glorification of violence and conspicuous consumption are just another reason to hate this shallow shit.
Years ago, while living in Texas, I would join forces with likeminded folks crossing the border from El Paso and on into Juarez, Mexico for the purpose of building very simple homes made of concrete blocks and stucco for extremely poor working families. I didn’t mind the physical labor, the heat, the camp food; but the trash? That was another matter altogether. Juarez, situated in an otherwise quite beautiful desert landscape, is entombed in litter. This distressed me worse than being offered a glass of water drawn from one of the crude cisterns they had made from old steel drums of the sort shown on the cover photo of 'Cypress Hill.' Rather than collecting water, Cypress Hill is using theirs to burn garbage. And I guess if I lived in Juarez permanently, or an environment like the one captured on the cover of this LP, then I might be plenty pissed off, too, like Cypress Hill. Or, maybe I’d just get really high and ‘feel one with the earth,’ as they rap about in conclusion. But both at the same time, together? Conflict of interest, in my experience. And Cypress Hill’s not just plain pissed off, either. They are ready and willing, even eager to destroy. Most of this LP is, if not a celebration, certainly an approval of violence (mostly firearms, but there are other methods offered, like prison rape) for the purpose of retributive (perceived) justice, territorial defense, preemptive strike, and because I just feel like it motherfucker. These vatos mean business, bad bidness. In 2005, a Canadian pop singer named Daniel Powter scored a huge hit with, ‘Bad Day.’ I’m sure you know it (and loathe it, or love it- there’s virtually no middle ground on this one): ‘ ‘Cause you had a bad day. You’re taking one down. You sing a sad song just to turn it around. You say you don’t know. You tell me don’t lie. You work at a smile and you go for a ride. You had a bad day. The camera don’t lie. You’re coming back down and you really don’t mind. You had a bad day.’ This is Powter’s response to times when ‘the system goes on the blink and the whole thing turns out wrong.’ I’m guessing that a cover photo of his neighborhood would look a lot different than Cypress Hill’s. No doubt Daniel’s more measured response to adversity is due, at least in part, to a good dose of white privilege. Or maybe he managed to escape any significant childhood trauma, and was mentored by loving parents who taught him how to deal maturely with adversity. It’s possible that it might just be too cold in Canada to stay angry for too long. Who knows? What I do know is that ‘Bad Day’ is a terrible (albeit, catchy) song with a sweet message. 'Cypress Hill' samples some sweet music over which to rap; but their message inspires far more terror than the sappiest sounds of Powter’s crooning. During this month of America’s honoring of black history, I’m reminded of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s warning that, ‘If we do an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, we will be a blind and toothless nation.’ I fortunately, gratefully escaped 'Cypress Hill' with nothing more than a black eye, one loose tooth, a couple of ringing ears, and a broken heart for anyone whose life experiences have been such that they feel a smoking gun with a stream of bullets, and a stream of smoking blunts before, during, and after the killing, to be their only recourse.
Beats are very simple and I am not a big fan of the funk mixed with the beats. Additionally, the rap is boring, classic 'I have the biggest dick'-rap, I am not struck but the lyricism. Additionally, the vocal style is grinding me down. It has this retarded twang. Overall, the album is pretty annoying and boring to listen to for me. The interlude Something for the blunted which is guitar driven with a funky notes is the best thing on the album for me (likely because it doesn't feature rap. Furthermore, it seems more like a sample that can looped which I enjoyed).
Nope nope nope nopenopenopenope. NOPE.
Ugh. I hate this shit. I considered giving this another star since it was a huge part of my late "high" school years, but giving it another go thirty years later reveals it's total disappointing garbage with little substance. Also, B-Real's whiny girl-voice makes this even less tolerable. Cypress Hill, along with Chronic set the stage for all the shitty gangster spliff crap to come for years afterward. I hate it.
Good God... I wish I could give 0/5
nope
nope. but I will say I like some of the beats.
Trite, repetitive, and boring as fuck.
I simultaneously think that there should be more rap/hip-hop on this list and then, every time a record from the genre comes up, I don't really want to listen. After that, one of two things happens. I am pleasantly surprised and end up really liking it (see Frank Ocean from a few days ago), or I just want it to be over. Cypress Hill falls into the second category.
horrible
So far, all the songs sound alike, repetitive and annoying. It's like an ice pick to the brain. Literally. I'm 3 songs in and I have an excruciating headache.
Not really for me. I could listen to one of the songs on here and that would be all I need of the album. Reminds me of playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater though which is cool :P
Hiphop, urgh
Nah...
Sorry, I still can’t stand this genre
No thanks, got to track 5, there's much better at this sort of thing.
No.
Dang, bad stretch lately. I didn't like this at all.
Just wasn't a huge fan.
bad
good
